- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. Episode 73 — can you believe it? Luna: I know, time flies! And I feel like we've covered so much, but there's always something new to learn. What's today's topic? Lucas: Today we're going to the pharmacy. You know, buying medicine when you're not feeling well. Luna: Oh, that's useful! I remember we did 'at the clinic' a few episodes ago, but the pharmacy is different. Lucas: Exactly. At the clinic you describe your symptoms to the doctor. At the pharmacy, you ask for the medicine you need. So let's start with the most important phrase: 'I need medicine.' Luna: Okay, how do I say that? Lucas: Saya perlukan ubat. Luna: Saya perlukan ubat. Lucas: Yes! Saya perlukan ubat. Let's break it down. Saya means 'I', perlukan means 'need', and ubat is 'medicine'. So literally 'I need medicine.' Luna: Saya perlukan ubat. That's pretty straightforward. Can I use it right away at the pharmacy? Lucas: Absolutely. You walk up to the pharmacist and say Saya perlukan ubat. They'll understand. But it's even better if you can say what kind of medicine you need. For example, 'I have a headache.' Luna: Headache? That's sakit kepala, right? We learned that in an earlier episode. Lucas: That's right! Sakit kepala. So you could say Saya sakit kepala. Then the pharmacist knows you need something for headache. Luna: Saya sakit kepala. Okay. What about a cough? I've been coughing a lot lately. Lucas: A cough is batuk. So you say Saya batuk. For a fever, you say Saya demam. Luna: Saya batuk. Saya demam. I remember demam from episode 69. Good to review. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's practice a full sentence asking for medicine for a specific problem. For instance, 'Is there medicine for a headache?' In Malay: Ada ubat untuk sakit kepala? Luna: Ada ubat untuk sakit kepala? Lucas: Perfect! Ada means 'there is', ubat is 'medicine', untuk means 'for', sakit kepala is 'headache'. So you're asking 'Is there medicine for headache?' Luna: Ada ubat untuk sakit kepala? And if I want to ask for cough medicine, I'd say Ada ubat untuk batuk? Lucas: Exactly right! Ada ubat untuk batuk? And for fever, Ada ubat untuk demam? Luna: Ada ubat untuk demam? Great. So I can say Saya perlukan ubat, or ask a specific question. Lucas: Yes. Let's do a little role-play. I'll be the pharmacist. You come in and say you need medicine. Luna: Okay. Saya perlukan ubat. Lucas: The pharmacist says 'Untuk apa?' meaning 'For what?' Luna: Saya sakit kepala. Lucas: Then the pharmacist might say 'Ada ubat untuk sakit kepala. This one.' And hand you a box. So you can say Terima kasih. Luna: Saya perlukan ubat. Saya sakit kepala. Terima kasih. That felt good. Lucas: You're a natural. Now let's do another scenario. This time you have a cough. Luna: Saya perlukan ubat. Saya batuk. Lucas: Ada ubat untuk batuk. Here you go. Luna: Terima kasih. So I can use the same pattern for any symptom. Just swap in sakit kepala, batuk, demam, or others we've learned. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want to say 'I have a fever and a cough,' you can combine them: Saya demam dan batuk. Luna: Saya demam dan batuk. That's useful. Lucas: And if the pharmacist asks 'Berapa lama?' meaning 'How long?' you can say 'Sehari' for one day, or 'Dua hari' for two days. Luna: Berapa lama? Sehari. Dua hari. Got it. Lucas: Let's review all the new phrases one more time. First: Saya perlukan ubat. Luna: Saya perlukan ubat. Lucas: Saya sakit kepala. Luna: Saya sakit kepala. Lucas: Saya batuk. Luna: Saya batuk. Lucas: Saya demam. Luna: Saya demam. Lucas: Ada ubat untuk sakit kepala? Luna: Ada ubat untuk sakit kepala? Lucas: And if you want to ask for cough medicine: Ada ubat untuk batuk? Luna: Ada ubat untuk batuk? And for fever: Ada ubat untuk demam? Lucas: You've got it. Now, you know, learning these phrases really can make a difference when you're traveling or living in Malaysia.
