- 0:00Anythink everyone welcome the cafe. Are in Manchester for our second of three live
- 0:04Coach of Shows with the Hall of Fame head coach of the Huskies Gino ori
- 0:07Ima. A full house here enjoying dinner as we get set for We're just
- 0:12the opening act by the way, for tonight coming up at eight, we've
- 0:14got the pregame, and then a little after eight thirty, probably more towards
- 0:18quarter to nine, the top ranked men take on Butler at a sold out
- 0:21Excel Center. But Gino is here with us, and last time we visited
- 0:26it was just before the Huskies took on the Irish. So two and one
- 0:30since we last visited. But a good week last week. You got a
- 0:33couple of testers on the road at Villanova. And for some reason, Saint
- 0:37John's always seems to play a better whether it's Hartford or stores in Connecticut than
- 0:42they do in New York. It just seems that way. Yeah, I
- 0:46don't know what it is, or we play lousy at home. Sometimes it's
- 0:53you know, some teams they have to see you once before they get it
- 0:58kind of a feel for you, and they have to get feel for your
- 1:03players. I don't necessarily like a lot of times when we beat somebody by
- 1:11a lot at their at their place, or we beat them by a lot
- 1:15at home and then we have to go to their place. You know,
- 1:19no matter what you say, everybody thinks it's going to be an easy game.
- 1:22You know. So, but Saint John's is they're what six and four
- 1:29in the conference or something like that for twelve games already. Yeah, what
- 1:36are we? I don't know these things? You lead the league? Yeah,
- 1:44yeah, so you know they want a games in the league. They
- 1:49don't give up a lot of points. They try to keep the game really
- 1:52close, you know, they use up the whole shock lock. And we
- 1:55don't have the kind of team where we can just go out and make them
- 2:00play fast all the time. Sometimes we can, sometimes we can't. So
- 2:05it ended up being like a well we only took seven three point shots.
- 2:07Yeah, season low two mate. You know that's well when Elea's like,
- 2:14that's like bunting in baseball today, you know, like we brought back old
- 2:16school basketball. Yeah, Leah was just so good. You know, that's
- 2:22a great matchup for her, you know, especially if she's making those mid
- 2:27range jump shots. You know, that's been the only the only thing that
- 2:30the defense can say, okay, well let's give her that fifteen foot jump
- 2:36shot and if she makes them, then they they they just resigned themselves like
- 2:39we're gonna lose because they can't guard her in the lane. And then they
- 2:45have the double teamer in the lane and then you know Page, that's her
- 2:49thing, and so it causes all kinds of problems for them. And you
- 2:54know, if we can get those two playing like that every game. I'm
- 2:59not saying that they take thirty five shots or whatever it is that they took.
- 3:07I think they scored with thirty three points and twenty six points. Yeah,
- 3:12not that I would mind if it was like that every game, But
- 3:15you know, I think that we have some other guys that need to get
- 3:20more involved. And maybe tomorrow night's the night. Who knows. Yeah,
- 3:25they went, let's see. Aliah went twelve of twenty, Page went nine
- 3:30of sixteen. Alia was on a roll and then she missed a couple of
- 3:32mid ranges in the fourth early the game was a twenty point game with about
- 3:38two and a half to go on the third and then Unique Drake, who
- 3:40again had struggled, I mean she hadn't made a field goal. She banks
- 3:45in a three. I mean we've seen that a lot lately, opponents banking
- 3:49in threes. But that got the ball rolling all of a sudden, everything
- 3:53well for them, Yeah, and then we just kind of I think when
- 4:02the one thing when you don't have a lot of people to put in,
- 4:08like you know, you if you normally play seven, eight, nine guys,
- 4:12let's say all those guys that would be playing in the fourth quarter would
- 4:15be fresh, yeah, because everybody would have played a lot. And then
- 4:19you know, you don't have to worry about somebody coming back on you and
- 4:23getting you tired or whatever. You don't have to worry about that stuff.
- 4:27I think what happens is we get up twenty, and we've played so hard
- 4:30to get up twenty that I think our guys go, all right, can
- 4:33you guys just go away? All right, you're up to twenty, Go
- 4:39get on the bus and go home. And they want to keep playing,
- 4:42so you have to keep playing. And sometimes it gets to be kind of
- 4:46funky like that, and it's you're not supposed to you know, you're not
- 4:50supposed to win easy. We've made it look easy for all these years.
- 4:55I know that, but it's not supposed to be easy. It's supposed to
- 4:57be really hard. Factially a minute one thing. I complimented her on the
- 5:01post game, and we've seen this all season and pretty much a good chunk
- 5:04of the time she's been here. We know she's quick. I don't think
- 5:09there's a post player in the league that's as quick as Aliah. But I
- 5:13like when she comes out defensively to the top of the key to help the
- 5:15guards out to get double teams or just hedge out somebody coming off a screen
- 5:19and she pops out and it paid off on Sunday with four steals. Yeah,
- 5:25I mean, she she can do that at anytime. Sometimes she just
- 5:30is in a perfect position because they you know, they don't think she can
- 5:34get to a spot that she gets to. So, you know, when
- 5:39you're active as she is, and we're not the only bad passing team in
- 5:45the country, you know, people just throw bad passes. I don't understand
- 5:50it. You know, like there's somebody right there, like there's nobody near
- 5:56them, just throw it to them and unfortunately always you know, so you
- 6:01should think about you know, I'm trying to tell our team guys that you
- 6:05should be thinking. You know, these guys are not just I'm not talking
- 6:10about saying Johnson particularly, I'm just talking about people in general. A lot
- 6:13of lazy passers out there. You've seen us do it, and you know,
- 6:16get your get your hands in the passing lane. You'd be surprised how
- 6:19many times they throw it right to you. Yeah, happened a couple of
- 6:24seconds. It's like yesterday with offensive rebounding. It was yesterday, what's today?
- 6:27Tuesday? Sunday? You know, we talked about like how come we
- 6:31never offensive evun? And I asked them that. I said, how come
- 6:35you guys doing on offensive evoun? You think every shot we take is going
- 6:40in? I said, well, I hate to brush your bubble, but
- 6:44we shoot fifty percent from the floor. That means half of them don't go
- 6:46in. So why don't you run in there and see if you can't get
- 6:51a piece of the other half that don't go in? You know, like
- 6:55we had one guy when I was coaching the Olympic team. They complained like
- 6:58I don't ever get the ball. I go, oh, yeah, you
- 7:00do. We shoot it and we missed. That's a pass to you go
- 7:01get it. You know, you had nine offensive rebound Sunday. Page had
- 7:08three and two big ones early fourth, two big offensive rebounds, A couple
- 7:14one you know, like perimeter, like right around the elbows off missus.
- 7:16The big one was off when Aleah missed the two free throws, and Nick
- 7:20add a couple and one was a putback. That's right, and that's what's
- 7:24going to happen. It's so easy because if you ever watched like a replay,
- 7:29every time somebody shoots the ball, the other team, including our team,
- 7:32if you watch this play against Villanova, especially, every time the offense
- 7:36shoots the ball, everybody on defense goes, I guess to look and see
- 7:44like like there's a like the moon landing. They're all looking up there,
- 7:47going and nobody worries about the guys that are flying in there from all over
- 7:55the place to get to get a piece of the ball. So I said,
- 7:58that's so easy. It's so easy. It's so easy to score points.
- 8:03But it takes work. It's a mindset, it's a mind it takes
- 8:05work. And he goes, oh, do you do drills. I don't
- 8:07care how many drills you're going to do. The kids are either a rebounder
- 8:11or they're not. They're either a kid that wants the ball all the time,
- 8:16or they're not. You know, it's like when you play football,
- 8:18you're like, we're gonna do hitting drills, Well, some kids are going
- 8:22to hit you like eh, and other kids are going to knock your head
- 8:26off, so we didn't. We got to get more rebounders more with GINO.
- 8:31Hope you're enjoying your dinner out here, folks, And if you're listening
- 8:35to U Sound the way to the Excel Center, appreciate you tuning in.
- 8:37It is the Wells Fargo you kind of women's basketball coaches show on Learfield Back
