- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine eighty seven. Today,
- 0:09Speaker 1: The Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the Book
- 0:12Speaker 1: of Exodus with chapter thirty. Welcome to the Bible Study Podcast.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I'm your host, Chris Christensen. We're going to continue on
- 0:27Speaker 1: with some of those DIY how to get things set
- 0:29Speaker 1: up kind of verses that we had a little bit
- 0:32Speaker 1: ago in Exodus, and we're going to do two more
- 0:35Speaker 1: chapters before things start to go very wrong. But first
- 0:39Speaker 1: a word from this sponsor. Chapter thirty starts this way
- 0:43Speaker 1: the altar of incense. Make an altar of acacia wood
- 0:46Speaker 1: for burning incense. It is to be square, a cubit
- 0:49Speaker 1: long and a cubit wide, and two cubits high. It's
- 0:53Speaker 1: horns of the one piece with it. Overlay the top
- 0:56Speaker 1: of all the sides and the horns with pure gold.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Make a gold molding around it. Make two gold rings
- 1:03Speaker 1: for the altar below the molding, two on each of
- 1:06Speaker 1: the opposite sides to hold the poles to use to
- 1:09Speaker 1: carry it. Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay
- 1:12Speaker 1: them with gold. Put the gold in front of the
- 1:15Speaker 1: curtain that shields the arc of the covenant law before
- 1:19Speaker 1: the atonement cover that is over the tablets of the
- 1:22Speaker 1: Covenant Law where I will meet you. Erin must burn
- 1:26Speaker 1: fragrant incense on the altar every morning when he tends
- 1:29Speaker 1: the lamps. He must burn incense again when he lights
- 1:32Speaker 1: the lamps at twilight. So incense will burn regularly before
- 1:36Speaker 1: the Lord for the generations to come. Do not offer
- 1:40Speaker 1: on this altar any other incense or any burnt offering
- 1:44Speaker 1: or grain offering, and do not pour a drink offering
- 1:47Speaker 1: on it. Once a year aaron shall make atonement on
- 1:50Speaker 1: its horns. This annual atonement must be made with the
- 1:53Speaker 1: blood of the atoning sin offering for the generations to come.
- 1:58Speaker 1: It is most holy to the Lord. Okay, so we've
- 2:01Speaker 1: got this special altar which is just going to be
- 2:03Speaker 1: used for burning incense. It's a smaller thing. It is
- 2:07Speaker 1: a cubit long and a cubit wide and two cubits high,
- 2:11Speaker 1: so it's roughly eighteen inches by eighteen inches by three
- 2:15Speaker 1: feet tall. And they're going to burn incests on here
- 2:19Speaker 1: in the morning and in the evening again as a
- 2:22Speaker 1: regular part of the worship. That is going to go
- 2:26Speaker 1: on until worship stops, basically until this form of worship
- 2:30Speaker 1: stops with the destruction of the Second Temple. Atonement money. Then,
- 2:35Speaker 1: the lords said to Moses, when you take a sensus
- 2:38Speaker 1: of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay
- 2:41Speaker 1: the Lord a ransom for his life at the time
- 2:44Speaker 1: he has counted. Then no plague will come on them.
- 2:47Speaker 1: When you number them. Each one who crosses over to
- 2:50Speaker 1: those already counted is to give a half shekel. According
- 2:54Speaker 1: to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty garras. This half
- 2:59Speaker 1: shekel is an offering to the Lord. All who cross over.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Those twenty years old or more are to give an
- 3:05Speaker 1: offering to the Lord. The rich or not to give
- 3:08Speaker 1: more than a half a shekel, and the poor are
- 3:10Speaker 1: not to give less. When you make the offering to
- 3:13Speaker 1: the Lord to atone for your lives, receive the atonement
- 3:16Speaker 1: money from the Israelites and use it for the service
- 3:19Speaker 1: of the Tento meeting. It will be memorial for the
- 3:22Speaker 1: Israelites before the Lord, make atonement for your lives. So
- 3:27Speaker 1: every time you count people, you're supposed to pay this
- 3:33Speaker 1: census tax, as it were. This basically of if you're
- 3:36Speaker 1: going to count how many people you have. And David
- 3:39Speaker 1: does this and gets in trouble because he doesn't pay
- 3:41Speaker 1: this and has to choose some options, including a plague,
- 3:46Speaker 1: so it's he gets in big trouble. But basically the
- 3:50Speaker 1: idea is that if you're going to celebrate how many
- 3:53Speaker 1: people you have, you have to remember to celebrate who
- 3:56Speaker 1: gave you all these people, which is God. That God
- 3:59Speaker 1: has protect you and God has raised you up. And therefore,
- 4:04Speaker 1: any time you do a census, you have to have
- 4:07Speaker 1: this atonement money. You have to remember that you have
- 4:10Speaker 1: sinned and you have to pay the atonement for that sin.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Basin for washing, Then the Lord said to Moses, make
- 4:16Speaker 1: a bronze basin with its bronze stand for washing, place
- 4:21Speaker 1: between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put
- 4:23Speaker 1: water in it. Erin and his sons are to wash
- 4:25Speaker 1: their hands and feet with water from it. Whenever they
- 4:28Speaker 1: enter the tent of meaning, they shall wash with water
- 4:31Speaker 1: so they will not die. Also, when they approach the
- 4:34Speaker 1: altar to minister by presenting a food offering to the Lord,
- 4:37Speaker 1: they shall wash their hands and feet so that they
- 4:40Speaker 1: will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance
- 4:42Speaker 1: for Arin and his descendants for the generations to come.
- 4:46Speaker 1: So the idea is You have to be prepared before
- 4:50Speaker 1: you enter in the place of God, and part of
- 4:52Speaker 1: that preparation is washing that you wouldn't come in unclean.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And so this is very important. This is even more
- 5:00Speaker 1: important than telling a surgeon to wash their hands to
- 5:03Speaker 1: save their patient. This is to save your own life.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Can imagine how much better we would all get a
- 5:08Speaker 1: hygiene if we looked at it as if it were
- 5:11Speaker 1: saving our life. This is something that the priests are
- 5:15Speaker 1: going to take very seriously. Anointing oil. Then the Lord
- 5:18Speaker 1: said to Moses, take the following fine spices. Five hundred
- 5:22Speaker 1: shekels of liquid mirror, half as much, that is, two
- 5:25Speaker 1: hundred and fifty shekels of fragrant cinnamon, two hundred and
- 5:29Speaker 1: fifty shekels of fragrant calamus, five hundred sheckles of cassia,
- 5:34Speaker 1: all according to the sanctuary shekel and a hin of
- 5:37Speaker 1: olive oil. Make these into a sacred anointing oil a
- 5:41Speaker 1: fragrant blend the work of a perfumer. It will be
- 5:44Speaker 1: the sacred anointing oil. Then use it to anoint the
- 5:47Speaker 1: tent of meeting, the arc of the covenant law, the
- 5:51Speaker 1: table and all its articles. The lampstand in its accessories,
- 5:55Speaker 1: the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offerings and
- 5:58Speaker 1: its utensils, and the bay with its stand. You shall
- 6:02Speaker 1: consecrate them so that they will be most holy, and
- 6:05Speaker 1: whatever touches them will be holy. Annoint Aaron and his sons,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and consecrate them so they may serve me. As priests
- 6:13Speaker 1: say to the Israelites, this is to be my sacred
- 6:15Speaker 1: anointing oil for generations to come. Do not pour it
- 6:19Speaker 1: on anyone else's body, and do not make any other
- 6:22Speaker 1: oil using the same formula. It is sacred, and you
- 6:25Speaker 1: are to consider it sacred. Whoever makes perfume like it
- 6:28Speaker 1: and puts it on anyone other than a priest must
- 6:31Speaker 1: be cut off from their people. It's interesting there are
- 6:35Speaker 1: people these days who are patenting sense. You know, obviously,
- 6:39Speaker 1: every perfume manufacturers are trying to preserve their particular secret
- 6:43Speaker 1: formula of fragrance, so that when you smell that fragrance,
- 6:48Speaker 1: you think of that manufacturer. In this case, when you
- 6:52Speaker 1: smell this particular fragrance, and this is going to be
- 6:55Speaker 1: quite fragrant miror and sediment and calamus and cast it's
- 7:00Speaker 1: going to be quite potent flavor when you smell that
- 7:04Speaker 1: you should think of God, and you should think of anointing.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And we're only going to use this fragrance for this
- 7:11Speaker 1: purpose incense. Then the Lord said to Moses, take fragrance spices,
- 7:16Speaker 1: gum resin onika and galbanum, and pure frankncense, all in
- 7:23Speaker 1: equal amounts, and make a fragrant blend of incense, the
- 7:26Speaker 1: work of a perfumer. It is be salted and pure
- 7:29Speaker 1: and sacred. Grind some of it to powder, and place
- 7:31Speaker 1: it in front of the ark of the Covenant law
- 7:34Speaker 1: in the tent of meeting where I will meet with you.
- 7:36Speaker 1: It shall be most holy to you. Do not make
- 7:39Speaker 1: any incense with this formula for yourselves, consider it holy
- 7:42Speaker 1: to the Lord. Whoever makes incense like it to enjoy
- 7:46Speaker 1: its fragrance must be cut off from their people. So
- 7:49Speaker 1: again we're going to have yet another different set of
- 7:52Speaker 1: fragrances that are going to be used for incense and
- 7:55Speaker 1: only incense in this tent of meeting and then later
- 7:58Speaker 1: on in the temple. And then let's continue on to
- 8:02Speaker 1: chapter thirty one, because I do want to get to
- 8:04Speaker 1: chapter thirty two next week where things go sideways. Bezalel
- 8:09Speaker 1: and Oholiab. Then the Lord said to Moses, see, I
- 8:12Speaker 1: have chosen Bezaliel, son of Uri, the son of her
- 8:16Speaker 1: of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him
- 8:18Speaker 1: with the spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge,
- 8:22Speaker 1: and with all kinds of skills to make artistic designs
- 8:25Speaker 1: for the work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut
- 8:29Speaker 1: and set stones, to work in wood, and engage in
- 8:32Speaker 1: all kinds of crafts. Moreover, I have appointed o Holiab,
- 8:36Speaker 1: son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan, to help him. Also,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I have given ability to all the skilled workers to
- 8:43Speaker 1: make everything I have commanded you the tent of Meeting,
- 8:46Speaker 1: the arc with the covenant law and with the atonement
- 8:49Speaker 1: cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent,
- 8:53Speaker 1: the table in its articles, the pure gold lampstand and
- 8:56Speaker 1: all its successories, the altar of incense, the altar and
- 9:00Speaker 1: offerings and all its utensils, the basin with its stand,
- 9:04Speaker 1: and all the woven garments, both the sacred garments for
- 9:07Speaker 1: Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons when
- 9:10Speaker 1: they serve as priests. And the anointing oil and fragrant
- 9:13Speaker 1: incense for the Holy Place. They are to make them,
- 9:15Speaker 1: just as I commanded you. So this is something we'd
- 9:19Speaker 1: see as a theme in the Bible, as God is
- 9:21Speaker 1: never going to tell us to build all this stuff
- 9:24Speaker 1: and not provide both the materials and in this case,
- 9:28Speaker 1: the skills necessary to do so. So all of the
- 9:32Speaker 1: things that God is telling Moses to create, he is
- 9:35Speaker 1: made sure that Moses and the people of Israel have
- 9:39Speaker 1: the ability to do that. The Sabbath, then, the Lord
- 9:43Speaker 1: said to Moses, say to the Israelites, you must observe
- 9:45Speaker 1: my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and
- 9:48Speaker 1: your generations to come, so you may know that I
- 9:50Speaker 1: am the Lord who makes you holy. Observe the Sabbath
- 9:54Speaker 1: because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it
- 9:57Speaker 1: will be put to death. Those who do any work
- 9:59Speaker 1: on the Sabbath must be cut off from their people
- 10:02Speaker 1: For six days work is to be done, but the
- 10:03Speaker 1: seventh day is a day of Sabbath rest holy to
- 10:06Speaker 1: the Lord. Whoever does work on the Sabbath day is
- 10:09Speaker 1: to be put to death. The Israelites are to observe
- 10:12Speaker 1: the Sabbath, celebrating it for generations to come. As a
- 10:15Speaker 1: lasting Covenant. It will be a sign between me and
- 10:18Speaker 1: the Israelites forever. For in six days the Lord made
- 10:21Speaker 1: the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day
- 10:23Speaker 1: he rested and was refreshed. When the Lord finished speaking
- 10:27Speaker 1: to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two
- 10:29Speaker 1: tablets of the Covenant Law, the tablets of Stone, inscribed
- 10:33Speaker 1: by the Finger of God. Okay, not sure why God
- 10:38Speaker 1: needs to repeat the Sabbath here, because we've already had
- 10:41Speaker 1: Sabbath laws, but he does repeat what was already mentioned
- 10:44Speaker 1: in the Ten Commandments. And then the most important line
- 10:48Speaker 1: in this whole thing here is that last line of Finally,
- 10:52Speaker 1: the Lord is done talking to Moses. He's been up
- 10:54Speaker 1: here forty days and forty nights, and he's gotten all
- 10:57Speaker 1: these instructions. He now knows how to make the see
- 11:00Speaker 1: garments out, to anoint the priests, how to make the tabernacle.
- 11:03Speaker 1: He's been taking notes like crazy. And God has also
- 11:06Speaker 1: given him these two stone tablets with the Ten Commandments
- 11:10Speaker 1: or with the Tablets of the Covenant Law. We usually
- 11:13Speaker 1: assume that that's the Ten Commandments on there. And he
- 11:17Speaker 1: sends him down the mountain, and that's where trouble starts,
- 11:21Speaker 1: but we're going to say that for next week. With that,
- 11:23Speaker 1: we're going to end this episode of the Bible Study Podcast.
