Latest / Inside Country with Wayne D / Miranda Lambert Says, "Post Malone Did It The Right Way!"
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Wayne d in studio with a lady who always
- 0:03Speaker 1: seems to be busy. Do you does Mirandam and Lambert
- 0:06Speaker 1: believe in downtime at this point in the life.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm doing pretty good.
- 0:11Speaker 1: How do you? Because how do you balance things?
- 0:15Speaker 2: I well, I don't know, but I'm learning, you know,
- 0:19Speaker 2: And I think it's like that's a big conversation lately.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I feel like with everybody and maybe we're putting too
- 0:25Speaker 2: much pressure on it. Just like live our lives. Like
- 0:27Speaker 2: stop saying we're clock balance, because then it's more stress.
- 0:29Speaker 2: It's like anxiety. You know, Am I doing it right?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Am I doing it wrong? And that adds to the stress.
- 0:33Speaker 2: So I'm like, you know, we should just stop talking
- 0:36Speaker 2: about and just do it.
- 0:37Speaker 1: That's true. That's I love myself. I'll clip this out
- 0:41Speaker 1: so you can listen to it your own motivational tapes. Yeah,
- 0:45Speaker 1: speaking of tapes, awkward transition albums? Uh yeah, really old school.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I remember when I was a kid. You put the
- 0:54Speaker 1: pencil in to fix it. Tastes like, what what are
- 0:57Speaker 1: those tapes? The week cassettes? It's all I'll show you later.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Retro very retro. How do you feel about the new album.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I'm very excited about it. It feels like it feels
- 1:08Speaker 2: like home. It sounds like home. It's kind of a
- 1:11Speaker 2: little mix of all the influences I've ever had. It's
- 1:15Speaker 2: very country, lots of steal guitar.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I will say we sat in this same position with
- 1:20Speaker 1: Keith Urban a couple of months back, and he was
- 1:23Speaker 1: talking about a new album, but he was telling us
- 1:26Speaker 1: what happened before that. He created a whole album, walked
- 1:29Speaker 1: into the label to play it, and walked out and
- 1:32Speaker 1: scrapped the whole thing. Which is crazy to me that
- 1:35Speaker 1: somebody that you guys are at that same level to
- 1:38Speaker 1: me to have this body of work that is done
- 1:40Speaker 1: and you scrap it. Are you to the point where
- 1:44Speaker 1: you're super picky about stuff like that? Are you're only
- 1:46Speaker 1: creating songs that you're like, I feel it and I'm
- 1:49Speaker 1: rolling with it.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I just roll it. I'm like, I'm not going
- 1:51Speaker 2: to go in and waste my own time, you know, Yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 2: Like I really think about it and really spend time
- 1:57Speaker 2: rotten and really get a play in. So I go
- 2:00Speaker 2: in there with confidence and I don't you know, it's
- 2:04Speaker 2: like if you don't believe in it, who's going to,
- 2:07Speaker 2: you know, it's like, I want to go in there
- 2:09Speaker 2: and make something I'm really really proud of and not
- 2:12Speaker 2: a second guest. But I understand artists really want their
- 2:16Speaker 2: art to be authentic. So I understand there's so many,
- 2:20Speaker 2: so many times I've heard of you know, amazing artists
- 2:23Speaker 2: scrapping it because it just wasn't there. And I appreciate
- 2:26Speaker 2: that too.
- 2:26Speaker 1: The new album is called Postcards from Texas. There's fourteen
- 2:30Speaker 1: songs on there. Was it tough to find the fourteen
- 2:33Speaker 1: or did they kind of fall into place?
- 2:35Speaker 2: They kind of fell into place, and I wrote towards them,
- 2:37Speaker 2: like I knew I wanted this kind of nostalgic record
- 2:40Speaker 2: because I'm kind of starting over in a awesome way.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I got a new label with Republic and Big Loud,
- 2:45Speaker 2: and I was like, I want to start back at
- 2:48Speaker 2: the root of it all. So I kind of knew
- 2:50Speaker 2: what I wanted to do for this first record out
- 2:52Speaker 2: of the gate with the whole new team. I really
- 2:54Speaker 2: want it to be sound like old school me and
- 2:57Speaker 2: feel like that, and it does. Now I feel like
- 3:00Speaker 2: I can go anywhere from here.
- 3:02Speaker 1: At what point did the Big Loud Texas thing come together?
- 3:05Speaker 2: I'm obsessed with Big Cloud Texas already. I'm so excited
- 3:08Speaker 2: to be part of it. It's been about a couple
- 3:10Speaker 2: of years talking about it with my friend John Randall.
- 3:14Speaker 2: And you know, the music that came out of Texas
- 3:16Speaker 2: is so it's so important to music as a whole.
- 3:20Speaker 2: On it, it's Million Whalen and the boys like, we
- 3:22Speaker 2: have to make sure we nurture that and that we
- 3:25Speaker 2: grow it and that we can you know, we want
- 3:28Speaker 2: to keep the music out of that. There's so much different.
- 3:30Speaker 2: There's so many different kinds of music to come out
- 3:32Speaker 2: of Texas too. It's not just country at all, and
- 3:35Speaker 2: so our goal is to just shine a lot on
- 3:38Speaker 2: the amazing art that comes out of our state and
- 3:41Speaker 2: bring it to the world.
- 3:42Speaker 1: You know, there is something so prideful about the art
- 3:46Speaker 1: that comes out of Texas. And because Tay and I,
- 3:48Speaker 1: one of the shows we do is a morning show
- 3:50Speaker 1: in Austin, UH and you can just feel, even though
- 3:52Speaker 1: we're not there, you can feel how special that is.
- 3:54Speaker 1: As your career grew, did you feel responsible to kind
- 3:57Speaker 1: of like protect that a little bit and nurture it?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Absolutely? I mean it's like I want everybody to know
- 4:02Speaker 2: how how great our state is and what we sound
- 4:04Speaker 2: like there and how much truth we tell in our writing.
- 4:07Speaker 2: And you know, it's we have our own kind of
- 4:09Speaker 2: genre in Texas and it's the music I grew up on.
- 4:13Speaker 2: But it's also important that the world hears it and
- 4:16Speaker 2: we shine light on it. And you know, I mean,
- 4:19Speaker 2: George strait's a perfect example of doing both.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You know, yeah, absolutely, we know the list of massive
- 4:26Speaker 1: songs you've had, obviously the new album is on the way.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Do you have songs that, at some point in your
- 4:33Speaker 1: career you were sent or maybe you were a part
- 4:36Speaker 1: of a rite and they came to you and you're like,
- 4:39Speaker 1: I'm not feeling it, but then it ended up being
- 4:41Speaker 1: massive for somebody else.
- 4:42Speaker 2: You like, just ten of them?
- 4:44Speaker 1: I can, well, so you just mentioned you just mentioned
- 4:46Speaker 1: George Straight. We asked Kenny Chesney that same question. He
- 4:49Speaker 1: was offered check yes or no and passed on it.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Oh man, And now I can't imagine that not being
- 4:53Speaker 1: a George Straight song. Do you what songs would that
- 4:56Speaker 1: be for you?
- 4:56Speaker 2: I don't even want to say, because I'm like, I
- 4:59Speaker 2: don't want to insult the songs because they were great,
- 5:01Speaker 2: they just weren't good for me. And then they were
- 5:03Speaker 2: huge and I'm like sitting at a ward show watching
- 5:05Speaker 2: somebody except song of the Year. I'm like, I'm not
- 5:07Speaker 2: a missed one. That's okay.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Well, but Jake Owen told us that same story a
- 5:12Speaker 1: while back where he got big green tractor offered to
- 5:15Speaker 1: him and he goes, dude, I'm I'm a beach guy,
- 5:17Speaker 1: not a tractor guy. So like that doesn't work. And
- 5:20Speaker 1: obviously Jason elbeing still casting checks off of that.
- 5:22Speaker 2: But you know what, it's good though. It's good even
- 5:25Speaker 2: if I like knew, okay, this is gonna be huge,
- 5:27Speaker 2: but it's not for me. It's important to just not
- 5:30Speaker 2: do it. Like for me, I'm not gonna just go
- 5:33Speaker 2: cut something because it I know it's gonna be a hit,
- 5:35Speaker 2: but it doesn't feel like me at all. It has
- 5:37Speaker 2: to be right.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Was there ever a time where it was tough to
- 5:40Speaker 1: make that decision because you knew the song was going
- 5:42Speaker 1: to be big?
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah, there was, and it was huge, but it wasn't
- 5:46Speaker 2: for me and I you know, but I lucky, like
- 5:49Speaker 2: I found I got to have house that built me,
- 5:53Speaker 2: like so I got mine like that. That song is
- 5:56Speaker 2: so special and it's such a cornerstone of my career
- 6:00Speaker 2: and of my set every night, and just like really
- 6:03Speaker 2: needed that song at the time. And so I feel
- 6:05Speaker 2: like for everyone I might have lost, I gained a
- 6:08Speaker 2: song like that.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Yeah, And a song like that probably means more than
- 6:12Speaker 1: a handful of songs that don't connect with you absolutely.
- 6:17Speaker 1: When you look at the track listing of the fourteen songs,
- 6:20Speaker 1: do you feel pressure to recreate big songs or do
- 6:24Speaker 1: you feel like a part two of a house that
- 6:26Speaker 1: built me? Do you ever look for stuff like that
- 6:28Speaker 1: when you're putting together a new album.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I feel like you can't chase something that's already been done. Ever,
- 6:33Speaker 2: if you do that, you get lost. You sort of
- 6:35Speaker 2: start doing U turns, you know what I mean, You're like,
- 6:38Speaker 2: where am I going? What am I? You know? I
- 6:40Speaker 2: feel really strongly about reinventing myself in certain ways every
- 6:45Speaker 2: single record. And I mean, really, this is my tenth
- 6:47Speaker 2: album to make solo album if I count my very
- 6:50Speaker 2: first little independent record. Just crazy to even say, but
- 6:53Speaker 2: you know, I don't ever want to do the same
- 6:56Speaker 2: thing twice because I've already done that, you know. And
- 7:00Speaker 2: like when I was writing for wild Card, I put
- 7:03Speaker 2: tapestries up all around my music room with my trophies
- 7:06Speaker 2: and plaques and whatever, and I just covered the walls
- 7:09Speaker 2: with tapestries because I was like, well, this is all great.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I'm really proud of it, but I've already done that.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Now what am I gonna do? Because I'm sitting there
- 7:15Speaker 2: right and comparing myself to myself and I wasn't getting anywhere,
- 7:18Speaker 2: you know, and my friends were coming over and not
- 7:21Speaker 2: getting anywhere to write, and so I was like, let's
- 7:23Speaker 2: just cover all this up and start fresh, you know,
- 7:24Speaker 2: because it's such a part of my history. But it's
- 7:27Speaker 2: like I got to keep moving forward. You got to
- 7:28Speaker 2: keep reinventing. You have to keep trying something new, And
- 7:31Speaker 2: even on postcards from Texas, it's like little pieces. Each
- 7:33Speaker 2: song's a little piece of my story and where I'm from.
- 7:37Speaker 2: But it's still there's parts of it that are really
- 7:39Speaker 2: fresh to me and that feel like hopeful and like
- 7:43Speaker 2: I knew. The last song on the record is called
- 7:44Speaker 2: Living on the Run, and I did that on purpose
- 7:46Speaker 2: because I'm like, kind of sets me up for the
- 7:48Speaker 2: next journey, like where are we going? On album eleven?
- 7:51Speaker 1: You know, when you talk about a song has to
- 7:55Speaker 1: connect with you, it has to make sense for you.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Maybe you were a part of the right maybe somebody
- 7:59Speaker 1: else brought brought the idea to click for you. Not
- 8:02Speaker 1: all artists get to say that right. Some artists are
- 8:05Speaker 1: trying to find whatever song they can to connect. At
- 8:08Speaker 1: what point in your career were you like, Nope, I
- 8:10Speaker 1: have to feel it or it's not going to happen,
- 8:12Speaker 1: or have you always been that way.
- 8:13Speaker 2: From day one? I just you know, I started writing
- 8:17Speaker 2: when I was seventeen, and which you know wasn't great,
- 8:19Speaker 2: but I was it was a start. And I just
- 8:22Speaker 2: the artists that I'm drawn to and that I love
- 8:24Speaker 2: her are all really strong, like they stand really firm
- 8:29Speaker 2: and who they are, and so that's kind of where
- 8:31Speaker 2: I learned it. And also being from Texas, we're kind
- 8:34Speaker 2: of just that way. We're a little bit stubborn and
- 8:36Speaker 2: like we love y'all, come on in. But if you
- 8:38Speaker 2: don't like, cause we really don't care that much, you
- 8:40Speaker 2: know what I mean. And so I feel like I
- 8:42Speaker 2: use that kind of raising in my in my business,
- 8:46Speaker 2: like I still do it, you know, I just it
- 8:49Speaker 2: has to be. My mom's advice to me was so simple.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It was know who you are and stick with it
- 8:54Speaker 2: at seventeen when I was like, I want to do music,
- 8:56Speaker 2: She's like, well, you need to establish who you are now.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Don't waiver, because you know when you come into Nashville
- 9:04Speaker 2: like eighteen like and you're meeting with labels, it's like, well,
- 9:07Speaker 2: you could be the next this person, or you could
- 9:09Speaker 2: wear this halter top and be the next this person.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It's like, well, I just wanted to be the first
- 9:12Speaker 2: Miranda Lambert and that's what I've done.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You have a massive impact. And it's funny because you
- 9:19Speaker 1: watch these artists become legends, and I think, to this
- 9:24Speaker 1: new era of artists, you have reached that spot. We
- 9:28Speaker 1: talked to Lanny Wilson recently and she said how much
- 9:31Speaker 1: you have meant to her before she even knew you,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and now you're friends. What does that mean for you
- 9:36Speaker 1: to be able to connect with other artists and maybe
- 9:40Speaker 1: share something you already know about the business.
- 9:42Speaker 2: It's so important and I'm honored to have that. I mean,
- 9:45Speaker 2: it's a big responsibility and I don't take it lightly.
- 9:48Speaker 2: And that's a huge part of why I love Big
- 9:50Speaker 2: Loud Texas is I'm able to like use my experiences
- 9:53Speaker 2: and you know, the things I've learned, which I'm still learning.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I mean, I've done a whole lot, but I'm only
- 9:58Speaker 2: forty and I've got long way to go. So I
- 10:01Speaker 2: just want to be able to, especially with the women
- 10:03Speaker 2: in the industry, not just the artists, but women in
- 10:05Speaker 2: the industry in general, Like sometimes it's takes three times
- 10:09Speaker 2: as long, and it's have to pay, and that's just
- 10:11Speaker 2: part of it sometimes. But I want to be able
- 10:13Speaker 2: to like encourage artists and people to just really stick
- 10:21Speaker 2: it out and be strong in their authenticity because that
- 10:24Speaker 2: win's at the end of the day every time. And
- 10:27Speaker 2: so you know, if my career and where I've made
- 10:29Speaker 2: it to is a testimony to that, I'm really.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Proud country music. You would just like you were talking
- 10:35Speaker 1: about Texas and yes there's Texas country, but there's also
- 10:38Speaker 1: like different levels of it, right, and it's the storytelling
- 10:41Speaker 1: and it's the songs. Country music in general has become
- 10:45Speaker 1: more of a melting pot than it ever has been.
- 10:47Speaker 1: It's almost like top forty music and like the two
- 10:50Speaker 1: early two thousands were like everything everything, everything right now. Yeah,
- 10:55Speaker 1: but with that, we are getting experiences with artists who
- 10:58Speaker 1: normally haven't done country before. Obviously, more recently post Malone
- 11:03Speaker 1: something so special about his approach on we'll say dipping
- 11:07Speaker 1: his tone in the country, but it felt more like
- 11:08Speaker 1: a cannonball. What's your thoughts on how he's been embraced
- 11:14Speaker 1: in the format.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I just appreciate anybody that comes and immerses themselves in
- 11:18Speaker 2: our city, like I love Nashville so much. I always
- 11:20Speaker 2: say I've got half my heart in Texas and half
- 11:22Speaker 2: in Tennessee because this community and the country music industry
- 11:26Speaker 2: has been so great to me, and it's my family.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I mean, it's where all my friends live, it's where
- 11:31Speaker 2: I work, and I'm so proud of it. And you
- 11:35Speaker 2: know the fact that he came to town and wrote
- 11:38Speaker 2: with all of our writers, me included, and we're just
- 11:41Speaker 2: with at the acums, playing flip Cup and just hanging
- 11:45Speaker 2: and being part of our community. I respect that so much,
- 11:48Speaker 2: and I think that's the way to do it. If
- 11:50Speaker 2: you're gonna come on over here. We are very open
- 11:53Speaker 2: door in country music. As we all know. We take everybody,
- 11:55Speaker 2: but I expect for that person to, you know, respect
- 12:00Speaker 2: us and reciprocate that because our community is amazing and
- 12:04Speaker 2: we have some amazing songwriters, and I don't take that
- 12:07Speaker 2: for granted, and I don't want anybody else come into
- 12:09Speaker 2: town and taking it for granted.
- 12:10Speaker 1: You know, is it special for you to invest time
- 12:13Speaker 1: writing with other people? Not just the post Malone story,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but like, if you're gonna if you are going to
- 12:17Speaker 1: take your time with the experience and the success that
- 12:20Speaker 1: you've had to sit with somebody, is it a project
- 12:23Speaker 1: that like you have to know ahead of time and
- 12:24Speaker 1: believe in or you just down to write whatever. Whenever
- 12:27Speaker 1: I've been.
- 12:28Speaker 2: A lot more just down to write, like I needed
- 12:31Speaker 2: to branch out. And it's really good for me. And
- 12:33Speaker 2: it's you know, and it's writing with different kinds of
- 12:36Speaker 2: writers and writing with different kinds of artists. I mean,
- 12:38Speaker 2: I'm a creator, so I want to create in all
- 12:40Speaker 2: kinds of ways and I think I've opened myself up
- 12:43Speaker 2: to that a lot more in the last few years
- 12:47Speaker 2: and it's been really fun. And I've actually gotten some cuts,
- 12:49Speaker 2: which is super fun. So I'm like, Okay, this is
- 12:52Speaker 2: like it's you know, when I'm on my downtime, I
- 12:55Speaker 2: want to be creating something and it doesn't have to
- 12:56Speaker 2: just be for me.
- 12:57Speaker 1: How much longer do I got? Guys? Okay? Got it?
- 13:04Speaker 1: Something else? That's awesome is you have done so much
- 13:08Speaker 1: as an artist and not only that, like as a
- 13:10Speaker 1: powerful female artist in the format between a Vegas residency.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Your name's on Lower Broadway right, which, by the way, Uh,
- 13:17Speaker 1: what's my favorite taco there?
- 13:19Speaker 2: The gringo.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Taco. It's like the it's like a deep fried taco.
- 13:24Speaker 2: It's like a state something delicious and then fried, ye
- 13:28Speaker 2: make it even more.
- 13:30Speaker 1: But I will say, what did you call it?
- 13:31Speaker 2: The gringo talking the spicy beef ONTs my favorite.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I'm telling you, your.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Food is good, y'all.
- 13:36Speaker 1: It's like not bar food.
- 13:37Speaker 2: It's delicious.
- 13:38Speaker 1: That's and I say that to people because bar food
- 13:41Speaker 1: is bar food. Cool. Have some drinks and then it
- 13:43Speaker 1: helps you have more.
- 13:44Speaker 2: But ours is like good food, Like you can go
- 13:46Speaker 2: there for like lunch and not be drinking.
- 13:48Speaker 1: It's delicious and the caso is fantastic. Like if I
- 13:51Speaker 1: took that very.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Seriously because I put text mex on there and I
- 13:54Speaker 2: was like, all my Texas friends are going to give
- 13:56Speaker 2: me so much. Hell if this doesn't taste good, like
- 13:59Speaker 2: I can like claimed text mes and then it not deliver.
- 14:02Speaker 1: You know, But like so that brings me to and
- 14:05Speaker 1: I'm not putting down any other artists, but like artists
- 14:07Speaker 1: get approached to slap their name on something and then
- 14:09Speaker 1: they'll just send you some money once a month. Why
- 14:12Speaker 1: was it important? Because we've obviously worked with that crew
- 14:14Speaker 1: down there, the ownership group yea, and they even said,
- 14:17Speaker 1: as you were working on getting the building open, how
- 14:20Speaker 1: involved you were. Why was that important when you could
- 14:22Speaker 1: have just got money anyway? Right?
- 14:24Speaker 2: Well, I really wanted it to feel like me, like
- 14:28Speaker 2: you need to has my name on it. It's gonna
- 14:29Speaker 2: have my stamp on it. I touch and feel and
- 14:33Speaker 2: see every single thing that has my name or my
- 14:36Speaker 2: brand Marianda Lambert brand quote unquote on it, because it's
- 14:39Speaker 2: important to me. Like, you know, four chords. I learned
- 14:43Speaker 2: four chords and that was an extra I don't even
- 14:45Speaker 2: need for I needed three only. So I'm like at
- 14:47Speaker 2: seventeen and I can't believe what those four chords led
- 14:52Speaker 2: me to. And I have worked my ass off for it.
- 14:55Speaker 2: But I'm also like, I really want to protect it,
- 15:00Speaker 2: know because it's important, and I can't be a mentor
- 15:03Speaker 2: or be this, you know, have this long career if
- 15:05Speaker 2: I don't stay in it and stay really aware of
- 15:09Speaker 2: anything that has it needs my stamp on it. It
- 15:12Speaker 2: needs to feel like me. Fans can see through that,
- 15:13Speaker 2: especially country fans, like they want the truth, you know,
- 15:16Speaker 2: and that and that's what I signed up to give them.
- 15:18Speaker 2: And that means across the board, with my charity, with
- 15:21Speaker 2: my brand, I'll wind you know, I just with my
- 15:24Speaker 2: Nation Foundation. I'm really involved with all of it because
- 15:27Speaker 2: I have to be. And sometimes I'm tired, and sometimes
- 15:29Speaker 2: I if I slack, I feel it, and I think
- 15:31Speaker 2: the fans feel it. So try to stay in it.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Try to drinking like a lot of coffee as you should.
- 15:36Speaker 1: It's day near album. Yeah, don't sleep. You brought up
- 15:41Speaker 1: my Nation. I want to go that way next because
- 15:43Speaker 1: that's a part of the restaurant that the average person
- 15:46Speaker 1: might miss if they just you know, run in and
- 15:48Speaker 1: they want to see the the disco ball hanging in
- 15:51Speaker 1: the dining room upstairs or whatever. Sorry, the saddle that
- 15:55Speaker 1: is super unique.
- 15:56Speaker 2: We pattern that saddle after the one hanging Billy Bob's text.
- 16:00Speaker 2: There's a ron Stone sidle hanging over the dance floor
- 16:02Speaker 2: and Billy Bob's and I've just loved it since I
- 16:04Speaker 2: was like sixteen, and so we did a bigger version
- 16:07Speaker 2: for Casa Rosa.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Is it? This is totally not a question I was
- 16:10Speaker 1: gonna ask, But as you talk about the stuff hanging there,
- 16:12Speaker 1: is it I've always wondered for an artist, is it
- 16:14Speaker 1: weird to be like, yeah, sure, here's my CMA outfit
- 16:17Speaker 1: that I've actually worn and sweat in when I performed.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Go ahead and put it in a frame.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a little bit weird. And I always tell
- 16:23Speaker 2: him to like fold it, make it look smaller. And
- 16:27Speaker 2: I also cut the tag out. I'm like, they don't
- 16:28Speaker 2: need to, don't I don't even need to know what
- 16:29Speaker 2: size I was that day, Like, that's just gonna get
- 16:31Speaker 2: my head.
- 16:33Speaker 1: But but there's there's like a hidden gem of of
- 16:37Speaker 1: Casa Rosa and uh it's the Mutt Nation. Yeah. And
- 16:42Speaker 1: so as they were as they were setting that up,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I had I have a rescue pit bull named Cash
- 16:46Speaker 1: that when I was in Vegas, like he's and he
- 16:49Speaker 1: it's almost like he can tell like he was rescued
- 16:51Speaker 1: because he's so like sweet and he just wants you
- 16:53Speaker 1: to hold. Yeah, why was that important to incorporate there?
- 16:58Speaker 1: And then the second part of that is you're so
- 17:00Speaker 1: involved in that every day yeah.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I mean, I'm I have so many dogs, Well I'm
- 17:05Speaker 2: down to two. But like I'm involved to the point
- 17:07Speaker 2: where I like, overdid it nine press q dogs at once?
- 17:10Speaker 2: Like what am I doing? It's so at the mut
- 17:14Speaker 2: Nation wall at Cus Rosa, I'll speak on that first
- 17:16Speaker 2: sec you kind of sign. It's on the backstairs. You sign,
- 17:20Speaker 2: or you scan the QR code and then for five
- 17:23Speaker 2: hundred bucks, you get your dog painted on the wall
- 17:25Speaker 2: and it's hand painted by my friend Tiny. He's amazing, Tim,
- 17:28Speaker 2: He's great, he's amazing. He painted all the murals in
- 17:31Speaker 2: all of our places and he'll paint your dog and
- 17:34Speaker 2: then you know, and every dollar that you know. I
- 17:38Speaker 2: started a Muttinnation Foundation in two thousand and nine because
- 17:41Speaker 2: I want I was asking my fans to like give
- 17:43Speaker 2: money to something, and I wanted them to believe in
- 17:46Speaker 2: where it was going and like understand what was going.
- 17:48Speaker 2: So me and my mom were like, we just want
- 17:50Speaker 2: to vet all of this process and make sure that
- 17:52Speaker 2: we're not asking the fans to give to something that
- 17:54Speaker 2: they can't really see, touch or feel and understand where
- 17:56Speaker 2: all the money's going. So we don't have a shelter
- 17:59Speaker 2: nation is set up up to give to shelters. We
- 18:01Speaker 2: do so many programs we work with. We do like
- 18:05Speaker 2: disaster relief, where we go in and help the animals
- 18:08Speaker 2: of the situation, like a Harvey for instance. We're boots
- 18:11Speaker 2: on the ground there and we give grants to a
- 18:15Speaker 2: shelter in every state every single year to just lift
- 18:19Speaker 2: them up. And we you know, do campaigns to We
- 18:22Speaker 2: have one called it Takes Balls right Now, which is
- 18:24Speaker 2: like promoting span neuter because that's part of the problem
- 18:27Speaker 2: why we have so many dogs. Too many dogs. People
- 18:29Speaker 2: are breeding. We don't need to. So there's I could
- 18:32Speaker 2: go on and on. I won't, but but my nation
- 18:35Speaker 2: is close to my heart and I wanted to make
- 18:36Speaker 2: sure that the fans could understand where the money was going.
- 18:40Speaker 2: And my mom with a private investigator in my whole life,
- 18:43Speaker 2: and so she like vets it like that, like she
- 18:45Speaker 2: knows about all the shelters that were that were affiliated
- 18:49Speaker 2: with and it's legit. And it's now been since two
- 18:51Speaker 2: thousand and nine and we've raised over ten million dollars
- 18:54Speaker 2: and saved thousands of dogs. So I'm really proud of it.
- 18:57Speaker 1: That's what I have four at my home. You do
- 19:00Speaker 1: and let me tell you it's I don't have a
- 19:02Speaker 1: back where I'm down in spring Hill. I don't have
- 19:03Speaker 1: a backyard for four dogs, but we make it work.
- 19:06Speaker 2: It's a I'm down to two because they were all
- 19:09Speaker 2: seniors at once, you know, but it's just the most
- 19:13Speaker 2: joy and like it's the most unconditional love and they
- 19:16Speaker 2: do not care. I'm not Mariana Lamberton them. I'm their
- 19:18Speaker 2: mom with the Greenies, and like that's fine with me.
- 19:21Speaker 2: You know.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Uh that's my backup plan when this radio thing drives
- 19:25Speaker 1: up for me? Is I said to Tate, I'm doing
- 19:27Speaker 1: a dog rescue.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I'm all about it. Let me know when when you
- 19:31Speaker 2: get there.
- 19:32Speaker 1: We may need funding. You know how much that's ten
- 19:34Speaker 1: million got left. I'm just kidding. We will rap on
- 19:38Speaker 1: the album because being a songwriter and being a storyteller
- 19:43Speaker 1: is great and it's therapeutic for your fans. It's also
- 19:45Speaker 1: therapeutic for you. Out of these fourteen songs, is there
- 19:49Speaker 1: a story that maybe you struggle to tell or was
- 19:52Speaker 1: emotional put to paper and then record that you hope
- 19:55Speaker 1: fans give a little more time.
- 19:56Speaker 2: To I would you know all my babies, I love
- 20:01Speaker 2: them all, but.
- 20:02Speaker 1: No babies are ugly, Yeah, exactly, But you have a favorite.
- 20:06Speaker 2: If there's an emotional The most emotional song on the
- 20:08Speaker 2: record is Run and it's a solo rite, and those
- 20:10Speaker 2: are always scarier because there's nowhere to hide, Like it's
- 20:14Speaker 2: kind of like I can't be like, well, that was
- 20:15Speaker 2: my co writer story because I wrote it by myself,
- 20:17Speaker 2: so you know, and it was a song I needed
- 20:19Speaker 2: to write at the time because I was going through it,
- 20:21Speaker 2: like in the thick of some hard stuff, and so
- 20:25Speaker 2: I guess, you know. But that's that's like the most
- 20:27Speaker 2: important part, because we wouldn't have some of my favorite
- 20:29Speaker 2: songs of all time. We wouldn't have if people didn't
- 20:31Speaker 2: just tell their truth, you know what I mean. So
- 20:34Speaker 2: as scary as it can be, sometimes it's it's so
- 20:36Speaker 2: important to just put it out there because it's if
- 20:39Speaker 2: it's your story, it's somebody else's too. Somebody else is
- 20:41Speaker 2: going through the same thing you are. It makes you
- 20:43Speaker 2: not feel alone.
- 20:44Speaker 1: You know, the album's coming out. We are what just
- 20:47Speaker 1: under two weeks away from the album coming out. Take
- 20:50Speaker 1: me The last thing I want to ask is take
- 20:52Speaker 1: me to the first time you ever heard your song
- 20:54Speaker 1: on the radio.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Oh man, I was like nineteen maybe or eighteen, I
- 20:59Speaker 2: think eighteen, and I had a little I had a
- 21:04Speaker 2: little independent record and so I heard on the radio,
- 21:07Speaker 2: Well i'll take the back. I was seventeen. I first
- 21:08Speaker 2: heard myself on the radio, but it was in Texas
- 21:10Speaker 2: music chart. You know. It was my little independent record,
- 21:12Speaker 2: and I wasn't very good writer at all yet, but
- 21:15Speaker 2: I was real proud of it. I was like, I
- 21:16Speaker 2: write songs, you know, and that was cool. But then
- 21:20Speaker 2: like signed with a major label and I had been
- 21:23Speaker 2: on Nashville Star and my real like Kerosene album was made,
- 21:26Speaker 2: and my first single was me and Charlie talking and
- 21:29Speaker 2: it was like, well, this ain't just playing in Dallas.
- 21:31Speaker 2: This is like on a radio radio like nationally, you know.
- 21:35Speaker 2: And so me and my mom were driving, I think
- 21:37Speaker 2: we were leaving Nashville and going towards home, and I
- 21:40Speaker 2: heard it like on a station in Memphis or something,
- 21:42Speaker 2: and we like pulled over and ran around the car
- 21:43Speaker 2: and like with like a fire drill because we were
- 21:45Speaker 2: so excited, like, oh my god, like this is big time,
- 21:49Speaker 2: you know. So it was you don't ever forget that,
- 21:51Speaker 2: And that was one of those stories that I'm glad
- 21:53Speaker 2: that I can be part of artist's life. In fact,
- 21:56Speaker 2: Laney actually called me when her when a Heart Like
- 21:59Speaker 2: a Truck, Number one, No Things a man not to
- 22:02Speaker 2: know her first number one? She called me, I think
- 22:04Speaker 2: it was really late at night. I was like, hell,
- 22:06Speaker 2: She's like, I just want to talk to somebody who
- 22:08Speaker 2: knows exactly what this feels like. And I'm like, it
- 22:10Speaker 2: just means the world to me because you don't forget that.
- 22:12Speaker 2: It's like it lives with you forever. And I still have.
- 22:14Speaker 2: When I hear it on the radio, I get excited.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I'll be like, car next to me, I'm like, that's
- 22:18Speaker 2: me on the radio. I gotta spin.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I've always wanted to if like an artist, and I'd
- 22:25Speaker 1: like to ask that too, is if you are in
- 22:27Speaker 1: the car and you're listening to whatever and your song
- 22:30Speaker 1: comes on, do you turn it up? Are do you?
- 22:32Speaker 2: It depends on what it is. Some of my old ones,
- 22:34Speaker 2: I'm like, I've heard that, But my new ones, I'm like,
- 22:36Speaker 2: crank it up. I will tell you I was leaving
- 22:39Speaker 2: vag I was leaving UH after my residency in Vegas.
- 22:42Speaker 2: One of the shows one night and going home and
- 22:45Speaker 2: and my song that I wrote with Morgan thought you
- 22:48Speaker 2: should know came on and the drivers like doesn't know
- 22:52Speaker 2: country music, and I was like, turn it up. It
- 22:54Speaker 2: was like eleven thirty nine. I'm like, turn it up.
- 22:56Speaker 2: I wrote this song. It was the first time I
- 22:57Speaker 2: heard it all there, so I'm still excited, like it's exciting,
- 23:00Speaker 2: especially Morgan Wall and cut. That's huge. I'll take it
- 23:03Speaker 2: all day.
- 23:04Speaker 1: A driver in Vegas like, yeah, sure, you can't tell.
- 23:09Speaker 2: All the ron stones lued to my eyes and I'm legit,
- 23:11Speaker 2: what are you talking about?
- 23:13Speaker 1: Miranda, Thanks so much for the time today.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Thank you
