- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in everybody to the Talking Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: Tristan, we did it.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: We are talking Big Twelve Champs Tech now, baby.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: We're gonna change the podcast name, okay?
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Change the whole name.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be a disaster.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: A pain in the ass on everything.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: Not it doesn't make any sense, really.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: Like, no.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: The Texas Tech Red Raiders are Big 12 football champs.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Tristan, when we I I want to go over some things here.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: I want to take it back a little bit because we need to explain to the people where we came from and what we experienced early on in our Texas Tech fandom to really just show the people how happy we are.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Because we got to tech in 2014.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: Freshman, 18, wide-eyed, just expecting the world.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: Heisman Dark Horse, Davis Webb, new young hot coach, Cliff Kingsbury, Patrick Mahomes, and yeah, very, very much an emphasis on the hot.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: We went four and eight.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: We lost to a seven and six Arkansas team 49-28.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: We beat Central Arkansas and UTEP by a combined 11 points, both of those teams.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Uh we let TCU put up 82 points on us that year.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: And now, 2025, the year of our lord.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Your Texas Tech Red Raiders are 12-1 so far.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: 12 wins by 20 plus points.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: Only allowed opponents 11 points per game all year.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Outscored Big 12 opponents, 378 to 107, two in-conference Big 12 shutouts, scored 40 or more points eight different times, the number four team in the country, a first round bye in the college football playoff, and a bid in the orange bowl against the winner of Oregon, James Madison.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: How are you feeling in this moment right now?
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: The only thing I want to happen right here and now, Steven, is for you to play the song.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: We are playing the song.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: That was the best one.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: That was the best.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: We played this song a lot this year.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: That was the best one.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: That was the best.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: That's definitely the best song.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Uh play the dang song of all time that we've had on this podcast.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: But dude, uh, you set that up perfectly.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: I cannot um add on to that at all, other than it's it has been great in this sport pretty much the whole time.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I remember that when we used to look back, and I'm sure plenty plenty of tech fans can relate to us, and I'm sure to some tech fans out there have it have had it worse in some ways.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Um, but I remember when we used to talk about the best games were the ones we lost.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: You know, we like we would like relish on losses.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Like, hey, we we played them pretty good.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Damn it.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: We're like, man, 2015 TCU, man, that big Baker Mahomes game, man.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: What a moment.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Unbelievable.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: But now, dude, we are looking at our your Tex Tech Red Raider team, who was ground champions over there in our home state of Dallas, Texas.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Um, first time in program history, you are 12-1.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: This is historically already the best season Texas Tech has ever had in school history.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, and that's kind of crazy to say out loud.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: You've been playing football for a hundred years.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Kind of crazy that this is happening on your 100th year anniversary as a football program.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Kind of nuts.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: The year, the year 2008 will not be brought up as much and as frequently as as it has.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: We will be talking about 2025 for a long time.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: That's a good thing, dude.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Like you, we can well, we will always have 2008 as like a mythical legend building a year for Texas Tech.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: But now we can finally move on from a season that was truly a what could have been to a what is, you know, because 2008, as great as it was, it was a what could have been.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Like they didn't bring home a single trophy, not one, besides individual player awards.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Um, they didn't bring even home a bowl game win.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: Um, and now your 2025 team is fulfilling that leftover work in bringing home TexTech's first ever Big 12 championship game.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and really, I mean, honestly, you're probably your first ever power conference uh outright trophy as well.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, the border conference, of course, was good, but it's not the Big 12.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, we're talking about the for the first time in living memory of all tech fans that this is happening.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Like you have to be a like a locked-in 84-year-old to have remembered, you know, I mean, to just even have remembered the win back then.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So, what a huge moment for TechStech, dude.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: All and the the players earned it, the coaches earned it.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Um, and all of Lubbock, all of West Texas, all of Tex Tech fandom is is not is not is full clear eyed of what we have.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Like this is and we're all living the best life.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: You you really think about this team.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: I want to emphasize what you just said because there is nobody that deserves this more than the players and the coaches on that team.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: Joey McGuire uh deserves this more than any other coach deserves to win.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: He is, and we've talked about it, we've said it ad nauseum, the most genuine coach in college football.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: The guy who is really, really happy to be where he's at and absolutely loves his players and loves where he's at.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Baron Morton, the starting quarterback, grew up a Texas Tech fan, Eastland, Texas, has gone through injury after injury after injury, and has been the quarterback that is the face of the first ever Big 12 champion Texas Tech team.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: J.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: Rod, Lee Hunter, Romello Height, David Bailey, Nicole Wisnesky, Koy Aken.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: I was saying Koy A.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: Welcome back, Koy Aken.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: Like all of these guys.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Ben Roberts, Ben Roberts, the the most outstanding player.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: I I'm over the moon.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: We were both there.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: We were both in Arlington, Texas this past weekend.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: Um it it was we've talked about full circle moments.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: This was a full circle moment of going out into the parking lot and pounding some beers before the game.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Uh and and just taking in the whole thing and experiencing it at ATT Stadium, where we actually did go to a Texas Tech game because that was where Tech and Baylor played our freshman year.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: It was just awesome, man.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: It was it was it was everything.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: It was surreal.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: It really was, you know.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: And I I know tons of our listeners were there as well.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And if you weren't, you're glued to your TV, cheering from home.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: Um, and uh just just what a what an awesome moment watching Joe Maguire lift that trophy.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: And it's it's kind of funny.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: It's talk about full circle moments.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Joe Maguire likes to win in that stadium.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: From his time at a Texas High School coach, you know, he he's he knows how to win state championships in that arena as well.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Now it's just moved up to conference championships and couldn't the college football game in.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and I like how you brought up uh Barron Morton.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: You know, obviously, um, wherever we we look back, obviously, you know, we'll we'll talk about J-Rodd and all that.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: But whenever it comes to like the feel-good story, it has to be Barron Morton, like you just said.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Um, and this without a doubt puts Barron Morton with with the with the Graham Harrels and the Patrick Mahomes, does it not?
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it has to.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: You you you can no longer mention the best quarterbacks in Texas Tech history and not say Baron Morton.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: You have to say his name.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: He is the first ever conference champion outright since the 50s.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: And I could I don't even know who that quarterback was.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: I'm sure he was relevant, I'm sure he meant a lot of Texas Tech history, but Baron Morton will go down as one of the best Texas Tech quarterbacks in history.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: He's fourth all time in passing yards, he's got the stats for it.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: And it and you, I mean, it's kind of it's kind of crappy because you just think about hey, maybe if he didn't get hurt, I mean, that dude would have been the all-time leader, potentially.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: Probably, and but but it it's part of the myth and the and the legend, I should say, of not the myth, the legend of Baron Morton is just overcoming injury after injury and still being there and leading the team through a bunch of crappy years and being the guy to truly turn the program around.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: 100%, dude.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: And I know we we've been throwing this out a lot, but I feel like he's a foot-in for the Ring of Honor eventually.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Um and just like Jacob Rodriguez, I didn't mean to try to take away from his uh aura as well as the kids say.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Um and he's absolutely in that conversation of greatest defensive players never play at Texas Tech.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, we just got the news tonight, as we were recording on a Monday, that he is not going to be in New York, an absolute snub.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: They thought they should put in three quarterbacks and a running back who is a part of a team who's gonna skip the postseason by choice.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Um so I'm obviously just a sham.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: It's uh you know, are you the quarterback that on a team that won a lot of games?
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: And that's that's all it is at this point, but I don't want I don't want to get too far from the from the point, dude.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: And shoot, dude.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: I I we've barely even talked about the game, but the defense, once again, just an outstanding effort from uh Shield Woods, uh Tex Tech defense that is without question the greatest in school history.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: Well, let's start from the beginning of Saturday.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: Let's start from from going into the stadium.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, 75 75-25 at least, Texas Tech fans.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: Some are saying 80-20, some were it was not 60-40, it was more than that.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: It was I would say I'd say 75-25.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: I'll give them a quarter uh of the fans in that stadium.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: And and I'll give BYU a little credit.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, they're a very national fan base, they're willing to travel.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Um, there were a ton.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: I was in the stadium for a couple days prior setting up for uh my day job, and I saw like so many BYU fans taking tours of the stadium, so I was a little scared at first because I saw a ton of blue the leading up to Saturday.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, but no, I mean they they were there and they were loud on that first drive.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, they were they were great fans.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: It's it's a great fan base.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: And uh but Texas Tech absolutely dominated that entire stadium on on the first sellout in Big 12 conference history with over 85,000 attending this one.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: It was pretty remarkable.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's still the most attended conference game in conference champion history, not even just not even just the Big 12.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: So it'll show I mean again, it just shows that you know there is so much football in this country or college uh sports in this country that people care about.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: You know, it doesn't just reside in Indianapolis or Atlanta.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Um and dude, it's just uh the Big 12 is, you know, obviously very thrilled that Texas Tech is there.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: And I really hope this is the start of a dynasty for Texas Tech to be showing up there regularly at this point.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: And honestly, it's hard to, you know, like you said, I mean, there's a ton of BYU fans there, but I even bet that wasn't their full-fledged like fan base showing up.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: I'm sure plenty of them were like, Look, like I'm I'm not gonna fly from Provo to Dallas to watch what is likely gonna be the same outcome.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: And it truly was, it was an identical outcome.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Like you had to have been a real believer or a be a cougar in Dallas to have gone.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I saw I I was going down of you know, the game in Lubbock, this game, very similar, very similar, just not just in final score, but how the game actually went, where in the second half Texas Tech just absolutely dominated uh from a defensive standpoint, kicked a lot of field goals still, not a lot of success in the red zone if you're Texas Tech.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: That was the same in Lubbock.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: Um, but you still managed to just absolutely destroy them defensively.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, and outside of that first drive, which was absolutely uh it was beautifully scripted.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: I'll give you that.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: They ran they ran about three or four you know, trick plays within that drive, and uh you could tell they just did not have the players to compete with what Texas Tech has.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, it's it's a testament to to what this Red Raider team is and how it's built, and uh just that there's nobody really in this conference that was that was close.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, and and us being stopped for field goals is also a testament to the BYU defense.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: That defense is legit.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, it it truly is, it's definitely their their best side as well, similar to us.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Um, but Bear Bachmeyer, just just too young and not surrounded by just quite enough dudes yet to compete against the bigger.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: He also got banged up.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: He got banged up a little bit.
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: The the ankle twist definitely affected him.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: And uh, when they had to throw the ball, and that's when it just went and spiraled downward.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Uh no, no offense to the kid, but even if he was healthy, they were not winning that game.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: Um, I hope he's healed up and takes it to uh takes it to Georgia Tech.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, I like Georgia Tech, but uh I I hope they uh obviously go and take it to him.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Uh it should be Notre Dame that they're gonna embarrass, uh, but obviously that's not the case at this point.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Um, but dude, yeah, you're right.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: The game was pretty dang identical.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: They have that beautiful script in the first in the first drive, and then they shut us out in the first, and it's like, okay, uh, can we turn it on, please?
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: You know, so I was never really nervous, but um we we eventually went and got it going, especially with that first big uh Koy Akin catch in the end zone.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: That was that really was the uh ignition for us to get going, and it was kind of off to the races from there.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was I I will say I locked in a little bit after the first drive.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: Like I was that meme of locking in with the with the video game going forward, and I was like, okay, I have my boss here, I have my boss's boss here, and I have been talking so much about how good this tech team is.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: And if they don't show out today for their first experience, you know, watching a Texas tech game, I'm gonna be upset.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: And uh, and then they ended up pulling it out, and I shouldn't have been worried even in the first place.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it was once once Bachmeyer got a little hobbled and and tech's defense just you know kind of showed all their stuff, it was they had to go to the the passing game, and then that's where it just went from bad to worse.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: Ben Roberts, two interceptions.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: AJ Holmes just plowing through the BYU offensive line and causing that fumble that he just erupted Bear Bachmeyer.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then there was another fumble we've made LJ Martin fumble at the end there, but four turnovers.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: I think they were all in the second, second, third, and fourth quarter.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: Um, just an immaculate showing from your defense as always.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: 100%, dude.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: And it's very solid showing from your offense as well.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: I know, like I said, I know I know the I know the red zone offense still had a lot to be desired.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: You probably could have eviscerated them more than you did.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: But all in all, dude, you took care of the ball.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: You uh you kept the ball moving downfield and you kept putting points on the board.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: So, all in all, you can't be too upset about the showing from from the offense.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: And what I'm really hoping from here in the postgame and having all these weeks off is you just get those guys rested, you just get Baron Morton's leg, you know, into that therapy session.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: And dude, I I just want us to come full-fledged against who is hopefully the James Madison Dukes.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: What I'm saying, I mean, but Barron I thought looked the best he has in weeks.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: I thought he was moving well.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: Uh clearly, you know, he's not as as mobile as he once was.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: I don't know if he'll ever get back to that point, at least, you know, while he's in a red raider uniform.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: But it's uh he was moving better.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: And definitely there were some times where BYU showed some pressure and he had to escape and he had to pivot and he had to, you know, kind of do some stuff that he hasn't had to do for a couple weeks against bad competition in West Virginia and UCF.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, I liked how Baron Morton played.
- 17:53SPEAKER_03: Probably a little more juiced up, a little more energized, but he's going to be juiced up and energized for every other game moving forward as we get further and further into this thing, hopefully.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: So, but yeah, I thought overall the offense was good, left a lot to be desired, but especially in that first half.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: Second half, you know, they kind of got a few things going, but still big time plays from certain guys.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, even in the drives that we didn't quite score on, you know, Terrence Carter caught that uh the two-point conversion, made a great play.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: Jacoby Williams had a couple explosive plays, Cam Dickey with the touchdown, Caleb Douglas and Reggie Virgil both made some great catches outside of Coy, who caught the two touchdowns.
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I thought offensively, you know, you're gonna be fine.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: You are gonna need more though as you move further into this thing from them.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, it ultimately is hard to complain over you blow out the second best team in your conference 34 to 7.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Um, but like you said, dude, uh we're gonna need to we're gonna need to be firing all the cylinders once we see some of the competition we're about to in the in the college football playoff because your Tex Tech Red Raiders are indeed in said college football playoff.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's still kind of crazy to say out loud, and we're not just in it, dude.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: We are in uh a bye week, and we have a real shot to make some real noise in this thing.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what do you what do you what are your thoughts on that?
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: Well, so okay, so reaction to the bracket because I I think we all kind of figured tech was staying at four, especially with you know the way the Indiana Ohio State game ended.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: I was pretty pretty confident that Ohio State was gonna stay.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: I I actually thought they were gonna go down to three.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: I thought they would give Georgia the edge because they killed Alabama and Georgia was gonna hop to two, but instead they gave the props to uh the what has been the two top teams basically the entire year.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I wasn't mad at Ohio State getting the two seed.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Um, and then Georgia obviously stayed at three with Tech being four.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: And uh yeah, that was the right outcome.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, that this those have been the four best teams this season, and uh and I I think you got a pretty good draw overall, man.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, you're you're playing you're you're playing, like we've mentioned a couple times, the winner of Oregon, James Madison.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: That game will be in Eugene on uh the 20th, on uh whatever, December 20th.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I mean it's gonna be Oregon, right?
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be Oregon.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: You know, they're they're a really good team.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: Oregon's a really good team.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: They've had some scares this year.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: You know, they they played it tight to a what ended up being a pretty bad Penn State team in one of the last games that James Franklin coached for them.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: You know, they played it tight to Iowa.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: That one was at Kinneck, you know, in uh where are they where are they?
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Iowa City?
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Is that where I was at?
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, in Iowa City.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: So they've had some tight games.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: Oregon is a flawed team.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: Not not, I mean, they're they're a killer, they're a really good team, but they do have their flaws.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: So it'll be interesting.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: I and I'm not gonna count out the Dukes 100% here, but you know, I'll I'll be paying attention.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: I would expect Oregon to kind of kick their butt.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: You you got you you got eyes on the Dukes, buddy?
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: You got some you got some hope, you got some water for the Dukes.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: I'm just saying I'm not a G5 hater, so hey, maybe you know, they they mess around.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Maybe Oregon's not feeling it.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Maybe they're kind of undervaluing the the James Madison Dukes, and we might get an upset.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Dude, that that that is the best case scenario for uh the Red Raiders is uh matching up with the Dukes after an immaculate upset against the Oregon Ducks.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: But dude, uh, you know, it's kind of funny that we can actually talk about the uh playoff bracket and it'd be relevant to Texas Tech.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: Like this isn't just us looking at what's going on with the the national stuff.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: But all in all, dude, um outside of them leaving BYU out, I don't know if I have too many good qualms with the way it it it's spun out here.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: Um I I would have put BYU in over Miami personally, not even just for being a uh a Big 12 guy, but because uh BYU as one loss to the best team in their conference.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: And yes, they went and they went and lost again in the but it was in the conference championship.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: You know you you can't punish them for that.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: But while Miami Miami lost two games and one of them was in at least one of them was a stinker wasn't one of them to like uh no I mean they they lost to Louisville and SMU so not great not great losses I mean not great losses I I I I'll disagree I I love the Big 12 I love BYU I'm glad that they I think they had a great year I don't think BYU was better than Alabama Notre Dame or Miami I don't I I I think they're a good I think they're a good team they had a solid defense but yeah you think you earned it more Miami or BYU that's see that's the real question here it's not about who the best 12 teams are it's about who earned it given the uh the rules and how and how they frame this entire bracket so from that perspective yeah probably they probably did deserve I mean yeah they definitely deserved it over I thought BYU resume wise and just looking at what they've done with what they've been given has been better than Miami Notre Dame and Alabama or I should say more deserving than those three teams.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: Now if you're just talking about it and why I can't be like you know BYU really got hosed here it's like because they're not they're not as good as those three teams they're just not I I I love a Big 12 and I want the Big 12 to succeed but they're just not yeah I I think ultimately you're right.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: I think ultimately you're right.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: I I I just you normally learn lean more towards who earned it that season not necessarily who's the best like I think if you I think if you blow it you should pay for it and that's what this sport has been for forever.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: You know like one loss is disastrous in in this sport and um uh but ultimately dude I I I can't be too uh I can't complain too much about the bracket I will say though I think it would have been fun to have been on the same side as any then I think I think that would have been a lot of fun with would be to uh to meet them in the semi uh in the in the yeah in the the quarter of the semi so um but other than that dude I I I like the way it breaks I think you know I know Indiana's number one in the country but I would rather face them than Georgia or Ohio State.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: I was thinking that too because oh that Ohio State defense is the best in the country right up there with Texas Tech but I do think that Ohio State you know 11 deep is is pretty ridiculous.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: And then you know Saiyan is a good quarterback don't think he's a Heisman caliber quarterback but I don't think any of these guys are a Heisman caliber quarterback.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: But um they I mean they're to me Ohio State still is the most complete team and I I did watch the Indiana Ohio State game and Indiana is darn good like really really good but I thought Ohio State didn't play up the snuff to what they can against them in that one.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: And then Georgia's the hottest team in the country right now.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: I mean they're playing ridiculous football against a lot of really good teams that they beat down the stretch.
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: So uh I would agree.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: I think I'm I'm happier that it ended up in the bracket to where you know if we do happen to get past you know the winner of Oregon JMU then you would get Indiana instead of Ohio State or um or uh Georgia.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah and I I'm not I'm not trying to play helmet bias here and I think there's nothing fluky about Indiana's season.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: They they earned what they are they're the only unrepeated team in the land and they deserved it dude and they went and got that Big Ten championship very much a parallel season to us like fan base wise um and but the reason why I would prefer to see them a little bit of a new blood matchup before between Tex Tech and Indiana here is Georgia and Ohio State have been there a ton.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: They have been in this moment many many times within the last decade so they have the experience and they have the uh they they have the um been there factor of of playing this game while we are going to have the new newbie nerves that you know we just have to see if we can get over um so I know I know these are kind of like unquantifiable things and I have zero doubt in the world that Joe McGuire is going to get these boys fired up for these games and get their heads right but I again I I think I think it's a really good chance I do think you face Indiana.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: I do think you face Indiana if you get past Oregon.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: I think that's you have yeah that's yeah yeah because Indiana would play the winner of what?
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: Alabama Oklahoma oh Alabama Oklahoma oh yeah they'll be either of those teams I think so too I think I think so too I I did hate the some of the first round match he got two rematches on the first round matchups with Ole Miss Tulane who almost destroyed them by 35 points earlier this season.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: Not a great case for the G5 looking at this uh uh this bracket breakdown of just like did you really deserve to be here you know type of thing and then uh uh Alabama Oklahoma being another rematch but the AM Miami game will be super interesting yeah really curious to see how that one goes and then uh you know I don't know maybe JMU might might mess around with the with Oregon I don't know I I actually have more faith in Tulane with the outside shot than I do JMU in Oregon.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah I mean the Lane Kiffin factor yeah exactly you there's so much going on with that program right now and uh Tulane's coming off a pretty dominant victory over UNC they're riding high you know they coach is leaving but he's still you know got the guys together so yep I don't know I'm interested I'll be tuning in to everyone but um a lot of people were pretty upset with uh with the bowl draw uh a lot of people were obviously Texas Tech fans hoping for the cotton bowl or even the sugar bowl but um we are going to Florida for the Orange Bowl which uh Don Williams of the Lovick Avalanche Journal uh pretty pretty well known guy uh locally in Lovick Texas uh this is how it kind of happened he tweeted this out earlier so I want to give him credit Indiana to the Rose Bowl based on the Big Ten contract that's why they ended up there Ohio State to the Cotton Bowl based on geographic proximity from Dallas to Miami.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: That is so that's so dumb.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: I actually I went on go I went on Google Maps Ohio State 1061 miles from the cotton bowl 140 from the orange bowl we're talking we're talking about a hundred and uh whatever 39 maybe that's the 29 19 119 mile uh difference and that's why Texas Tech is not playing in Dallas and they're playing in Miami that is insane like I mean if if these if these bowl selectors were smart if they wanted to pack the house like without question you give Texas Tech the Cotton Bowl yeah like I'm gonna I'm gonna be so jealous if the Aggs get past Miami and they get to go to the Cotton Bowl and well and watch Ohio State that would be credit that's a crazy factor.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: If AM wins in at Kylefield beats Miami then they would go to the Cotton Bowl to play Ohio State and I think Ohio State would beat them but but I don't know that's different that's a home field advantage for the for the Aggs there.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: I don't know I mean I think Ohio State fans will show out I'm sure they have a strong contingent in DFW and you know they'll they'll probably fly out to that as well but dude yeah no it that that does add some intrigue that does add some intrigue I just have one more thing to say about this college football playoff and we still have a couple weeks leading up to this game so we'll get some time to talk about it.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: But what an absolute disaster year for the ACC.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: Eight and five Duke wins the conference which was awesome and hilarious.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: Awesome loved it that because these conferences are so massive Duke played nobody in their conference and ended up beating all the bottom feeders and found their way in the in the championship game and then went to overtime with Virginia and won.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: So Duke won the conference didn't make the college football playoffs they didn't deserve it no doubt 100%.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: I thought of the three teams that were fighting for it Miami deserved it the most if it were me choosing I would have picked I would have kicked Alabama out of there but they're never going to do that with the with the team that made the SEC championship.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: But outside of Miami being a for the most of the year an an outside looking in team bubble team that no team even got close to the college football playoff virgin I mean Virginia I guess if they beat Duke would have would have been in but it would have been kind of like okay I guess we'll throw Virginia in there at 11 but it it took kind of a crazy decision for the committee to put them in in the first place.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: They were behind Notre Dame all year.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: And I know they won the head to head and that's why I think Miami deserved to be in because I think the head to head should have mattered very similar resumes and then it just goes down to that and then game over but the committee being as stupid as they are kept putting Notre Dame in you know above two slots above Miami three slots above Miami so they didn't have to put them at side by side and then with Alabama getting their butt kicked by Georgia they had to compare those two scenes side to side and that was the cause for the jump but I I could I if I'm a Notre Dame fan I am livid right now because you literally put us above this team all year long and it took the both teams not playing in in the week to then jump.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: So I get kind of some of the Notre Dame frustration there's still a bunch of wusses for not playing in a bowl game but yeah I mean I I can see the frustration there.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: I I guess you know I know I I do I get I get what you're saying um but ultimately like with the Miami thing being put in I really think it was also not only was it the head to head I also think it was the C F CFB committee playing politics.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah I think I really think it was them trying to you know give you know uh uh uh what am I what what am I trying to do um you know placate they're trying to trying to placate all the power conferences in a way you know like hey you know we don't need to we don't need to go crazy we don't need to blow anything up we don't have to make these think of anything you can put a team in and I really think that's what it was is just as much as the head to head.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: But in the process of doing that so the ACC does get the benefit of getting a team in the college football playoff and not being left out and because that would have been real disaster.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: That would have been ACC didn't get a single team in the college football playoff but in doing that they really pissed off what is a part-time partner in Notre Dame for that conference.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: Notre Dame partners with the ACC for pretty much every other sport and apparently their AD is on a on a media tangent right now of saying they've burned a bridge you know we're not going to do this anymore there's rumors swirling that they're not gonna partner with the ACC for this other stuff which is a big deal because Notre Dame is a national I mean one of the biggest national fan bases so I'm just saying the ACC has had a year from hell regardless.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Yes and you you have you have you have teams actively talk about leaving the whole time so it's it's it's not a great time to be in the athletic uh coastal conference uh because um I you you got to feel for the team you know like legacy teams like Cal Berkeley and the ACC so it's it's tough times there.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: Um but on the on that Nordane point what is the ACC supposed to do what do you what do you want them to do they well they couldn't do anything yeah I mean they were the ACC was just like what if the committee leaves out Alabama and we're all just like they're never gonna leave out Alabama.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: They're never if that's the situation they're never gonna leave out Alabama.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: The worst part is this is a year where I'm actually fine with them keeping Alabama in I like normally I'd be like yeah screw them get out of here but the reason why let me just get the point across real quick is sure like you cannot punish teams for losing in the conference championship.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah otherwise teams are going to do start doing some weird things or conferences are just going to eliminate the game altogether like it's just it's if you're gonna if you're gonna if you have if you risk losing your spot by going to this extra game while everyone else gets to sit at home um then I I get it.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: I get I get why they they kept Alabama in regardless of being blown out.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah what is kind of stupid is you know I well I don't know I guess nobody got punished for losing their conference champ besides like you know BYU and Virginia with that they were yeah I mean they were they were the outside looking in but yeah it was kind of crazy that they did not drop at all which you know I I if you're asking me what I thought should have happened was Miami at nine and Notre Dame at 10 and then Alabama gets left out but it's I I I hear you because the conference championship game should matter um but they got boat raced by Georgia.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: I mean it's a tough sell don't get me wrong it's a tough sell and honestly if they got left they got left out I would have mostly left oh yeah and I would have I would have uh and I would have been like you know what yeah they probably I ultimately they did deserve to get dropped out but I'm just saying I understand why they were left in due to that conference championship point.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah and the logo that's all a lot of that too.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Had that been like let's say a Big 12 uh team I don't know if they would drop them out real quick.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah dropped them out real quick I don't know there so then I I guess I shouldn't feel bad if if they if they dropped Alabama out.
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: But I can't say that I like I'm not gonna say all SEC teams would have got that benefit.
- 36:19SPEAKER_03: Like if that was a Mississippi I think they would have been out you know or yeah even Vandy but my final point on this ACC thing is this could have been the Big 12.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: This could have been our path of what the ACC is dealing with right now.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: But the conference has figured some things out they've added solid teams BYU Utah both very competitive this year in football and actually you know led to a lot of you know hype for Texas Tech based on those results of that game because those teams were still good still very quality teams and absolutely contenders until the very end but man I mean the ACC football wise is just awful right now.
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: Like they are in the worst possible spot of all the power conferences and I they both I I mean the Big 12 had teams leave but the ACC is in a much much worse spot right now.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah no the the the ACC is in dire straits and I I was I was trying to see if I could compare it to the Valley that was the Big 12 for a bit there.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: But I I'm having a hard time doing so because really the ACC is just bad.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Like it's just like it's a lot of mess and even their top powers are just really bad right now.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: Like like Florida State's a terrible team um and Clemson was a terrible team this North Carolina terrible terrible um and Miami's good don't get me wrong and uh Virginia had a great year but uh I mean maybe great six going a little overboard but um it's yeah it was just really really messy.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: And I I don't I don't have great feelings about the future of that conference whenever the the media deals start coming out and all that.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: But dude you're absolutely correct like the the Big 12 was able to position itself in a really strong uh stance here like it's it's full of really passionate really big really committed schools right now and I am happy but the Big 12 needs a Texas tech to like really come to the top like rise to the top because the reason why you need those top teams we can go on all day about how fun it is whenever everyone's on the same playing field but the reason why you need teams at the very top is because that's that's the standard like that you need someone the gun for every year to like match every year.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: Like it can't be the that's ACC's problem right now is they didn't have that team to like look to except for maybe Miami.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: So we're in a really good spot man and I really would love to see Texas Tech be that guy to beat every year now.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: We've had this same conversation ever since UT and OU left for the SEC.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: This is the time like this is the time not only for tech this was the time for any of the Big 12 teams to take over because you're no longer dealing with these massive brands that kind of hold you down in every you know conference rule and uh meeting and they kind of cater everything towards them.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: And now you don't have that now you just have a bunch of schools that are at a really equal playing field now you know not so much anymore with an IL I mean Texas Tech is is far and away well I won't say far and away BYU is committed to spending a lot of money in this uh in this process so that might just be the difference is who can who can spend the most money right now and who's willing to commit the most resources and also who who has hired the best coaches.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah because you need somebody to wrangle all of those factors together and we've talked about that last week with Joey how he's done such a phenomenal job of getting all these different things that are coming into your program and bringing them into one and being a competitive team.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah I was about to say it I really do not think it's all about the NIL.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: Like I do not think it's all about who's spending the most money do not mistake me that's insanely important.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: But it's the pro a program building is still supremely important.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: Like you still need to create a strong foundation where players want to come and play to like high school players want to commit to not just portal guys.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: Like people want to so people turn on their TVs and go, oh you know Tech STEC always puts together a strong squad so it's it like you said it's our captain it's our administration you know it's Kirby Hoquut it's the boosters it's having incredibly vocal leader boosters like Cody Campbell.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: So it's just the stars are aligning for us right now dude and you know kind of off topic but like of course still reveling tech I was just kind of talking about with my wife how I feel like we're kind of living in a Texas tech moment in a lot of ways.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: Like in many ways we are this we we are the hot shot team to talk about in college football on the national scale whether it's about our big spending our famous booster our lovable coach J Rod you know whatever um I would say we're the most talked about team in Texas right now.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: And not only that well I I know obviously the argument can be made about you know ET and Archmanning all that but like what that what's happening on the field and all that it's us.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: But like you also look to um how cool West Texas is right now.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: Like West Texas is kind of cool right now.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: Like everyone is kind of looking out there and kind of thinking that's a cool authentic culture um and how like you know you turn on landman and see the double tee everywhere.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: You know it's just like it's just kind of got this cool mystique about Texas Tech right now.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: I know it doesn't necessarily have like anything to do with on the field but I just just kind of just been kind of swirling my brain.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: West Texas PR manager who is pretty much Texas Tech's PR manager has done a phenomenal job of hyping up this not just Texas Tech not just the team but the place that West Texas is you've had great journalists like Shehanjay Araja write amazing articles in the offseason.
- 42:15SPEAKER_03: You've had you know Josh Pate you know that has been said so many positive things about Lubbock uh gone down there for his deal you've had uh the college game day you know make it back to Lubbock for the first time in 17 years and Pat McAfee inviting Joey McGuire back on his show randomly and uh you've had a lot of positive PR in that department.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: So I agree with you uh it's a great point of West Texas is pretty cool right now.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah it's it's it's really cool right now it's just it's really neat to see this overlooked place get its flowers and that's kind of been the theme over and over again I love that he brought up Shaehan's article kind of crazy that he wrote like what the biggest part of his career so far well deserved that thing was a masterpiece um before this season.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah and that spoiler alert Shahan has us in the national championship because that guy that guy knows that guy knows ball so yeah yeah he's gonna pod he's one of the good ones i yeah I hope to have him on the pod someday um I want to go back to something you said about Kirby and and those guys and I wanted to brag a little bit because uh I got to be on the field for the trophy presentation at uh at the end there and it was really really cool see it was really really cool seeing Cody Campbell and Kirby Hokut and Joey and there were other boosters down there even guys like you know geo and uh Matt Dowdy who you know kind of runs the show with with you know bringing Joey around all these different media sessions and press conferences and all that kind of stuff.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: Chris Level was down on the field.
- 43:54SPEAKER_03: I mean just all those guys that have put so much into it that go behind the scenes a little bit Uh and and everybody was just ecstatic.
- 44:02SPEAKER_03: And seeing the look on their face, I mean, I I like we do we got a picture with Joey after um he got off the stage, and I mean he was just yeah, he's glowing, man.
- 44:11SPEAKER_03: Like he's just he was all in, and it was really, really cool.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: Also, Howard Sampson is freaking massive.
- 44:19SPEAKER_03: That guy is so big, like it blew.
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: I knew he was big, but when you see him right there, it's like whoa.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: And you're not a short guy either.
- 44:29SPEAKER_03: So no, but I mean that dude, he's like six eight.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, he looks like he's nine feet tall.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: Dude, I that was I thought that was so dang cool that you got to go down there.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: So jealous.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: Thanks for the invite.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: I was only in the building.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: Um appreciate it, I appreciate that.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: Um, but dude, I you're gonna cherish that photo forever.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: Get that thing printed out on your desk.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, oh yeah.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: No, it's already in the works.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: Uh another, another little tidbit.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: We we were down there and we were just kind of taking in the moment, and then we see this like silver-haired guy come over to us, and he just started talking to us, and we're like, Oh, okay, you know, just just a guy or whatever.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: And he's like, I'm uh I'm Bear's dad.
- 45:07SPEAKER_03: I was like, Bear?
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: He's like, Yeah, Bear Bachmeyer.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, Oh, okay.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: So yeah, we were talking to Bear Bachmeyer's dad for a bit.
- 45:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, a little bit of a weird guy, nice guy, weird, a little strange guy, a little weird.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, but I he had he definitely had a lot going on.
- 45:23SPEAKER_03: He but he just kept telling us uh he was very complimentary of tech, obviously, and wanted to he was down there to talk to Joey, wanted to, you know, kind of uh just I guess you know, say congrats or whatever, but super nice guy.
- 45:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, but definitely a little weird.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: Funny, funny story.
- 45:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, I mean he named his he named his kids Bear and Tiger.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: So those are nicknames, though, right?
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: No, no, those are the names, those are his names.
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: Those are very much very and he was telling us, he was telling us about his his third son, who I believe is older than both of them.
- 45:51SPEAKER_03: Tiger and bear are both on the team right now.
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: He's got a third son, of course, you know, Bear, Tiger, and then the third son's name is Hank, because you know, because that makes sense.
- 46:05SPEAKER_03: But he was telling he was showing us like old huddle videos of Hank, and he's like, he was the best one.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: It's like, okay, man, whatever you say.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: They're right, they're right here, dude.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: They're yeah, I was like, you know, one was the starting quarterback for an 11-2 team this year, and he's just like, Yeah, but Hank was the guy.
- 46:24SPEAKER_03: I'm like, okay, cool, dude.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: You got a favorite, yeah.
- 46:27SPEAKER_03: No, but it was it was awesome.
- 46:28SPEAKER_03: It was a hell of an experience, and and I mean, seeing the players' faces when they're just down there celebrating was really, really cool.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: That's really cool, dude.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: I'm so jealous.
- 46:37SPEAKER_03: Did you say how to Don or anybody?
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: I didn't know I didn't see anybody else down.
- 46:42SPEAKER_03: I was kind of like, there were players going all around us, and I was like, I don't want to be the guy who's like, hey, you want to take a picture?
- 46:47SPEAKER_03: But then when Joey came by, I was like, I was like, okay, Joey, get away.
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: I'll regret this forever, but yeah, I'll regret this forever if I don't ask for a picture.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: And he was more than willing to do it.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: He's just I should have snapped one with the coordinators too.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: That would have been cool.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: I was trying, I was, I was trying to get one with Baron, but Barron was all over the place.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: He was going all around.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: I bet, I bet.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: Um, but I mean it's kind of funny that you brought up uh Bear Bachmeyer's dad.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: I really do feel like BYU and Tex Tech's programs are sympatico.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: Like it's it seems like there's a lot of love there.
- 47:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:17SPEAKER_03: No, I think so.
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: There was a there was a ton of respect.
- 47:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, mutual respect from every BYU fan I had an interaction with this weekend was super cool.
- 47:25SPEAKER_03: They were like, You guys are awesome.
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: Like, we're we're happy to be here.
- 47:29SPEAKER_03: You know, this is we have a good team.
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: We do feel like we're being disrespected, but tech is uh insane.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: That was the that was the consensus from the pretty much every BYU fan.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it was it's just an incredible weekend, dude.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dude.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: And you really you really soaked it up, dude.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: You were like leaving and breathing all TechSech can be uh Big 12.
- 47:49SPEAKER_01: Your job rocked this week, man.
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: I'm really jealous.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: Sometimes it sometimes it pays off, but uh other times it doesn't.
- 47:56SPEAKER_03: But this was this is one of those moments.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: So um, all right, man.
- 47:59SPEAKER_03: Let's let's talk a little.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: Anything else?
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: Anything else that you want to say about this football team or anything?
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: We obviously we have more to go and a lot in a couple weeks to talk about whatever we want, but we meandered so much of this episode, but it's I mean, I we could obviously go on for hours about just what an incredible accomplishment this was, and I don't think any one of us take it for granted.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: And I it's a dream come true, dude.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, it's it it's we we we could tell our freshman selves like, dude, don't worry.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: It don't in 11 years.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: You know, we waited 11 years for uh most of those years, but we survived Kingsbury, survived Matt Wells, and uh luckily we got we got uh old Joey uh leading us ahead.
- 48:46SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, we waited 11.
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: A lot of people have waited a lot longer.
- 48:50SPEAKER_01: Way longer than that.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: And we we understand, we recognize that you guys have been Texas tech fans longer than we have, but um, it still feels incredible for all of us, and uh just awesome.
- 49:00SPEAKER_03: Just really, really cool.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: Really, really great weekend.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: But it just it you get the brag to all of your friends out there, too.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: We're the only Texas team with a conference championship this year.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: I'm saying, we're the only ones with hardware.
- 49:11SPEAKER_03: And hey, you know, you gotta throw one more jab to the longhorns.
- 49:14SPEAKER_03: The best scenario happened.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: OU, AM, and tech are all in the playoff, and UT is sitting there at the Citrus Bowl.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: Or what are they sitting cheese in bowl?
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: Whatever.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: Cheese in bowl, yeah, with Michigan.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: Whatever they made.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: Congrats, dude.
- 49:28SPEAKER_03: Go and go and be the cheesiest.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: I'm feeling cheesiest, coach.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: The only thing that would have made it funnier with is if North Texas be too lame.
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: That is having them having to watch UNZ instead of the logwards in the playoffs.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: That would have been awesome.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: But hey, one last one last thought before uh we move on from football.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: I know we were already on the mics a little for a while here, but um so two Big 12 teams that are bowl eligible opted out of going to their bowl, K-State and Iowa State.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: And oh, and no, Baylor six and six.
- 50:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they were well, well, they were five and seven, and then they got invited.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: They got invited to a bowl and they denied it.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's that's weak from Baylor because they still have their head coach and everything.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: So, what do you what do you what do you think about uh K-State and Iowa State?
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: Uh it's it's stupid, it's dumb.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: Every like this is this is so ridiculous to me that people will opt out of a bowl game because yes, I understand Kleiman's retiring, you're getting Colin Klein in there.
- 50:32SPEAKER_03: A lot of your players are probably gonna enter the transfer portal.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: I I I you had a disappointing year, you were you know projected to be you know uh top of the Big 12, and you ended up being very mid.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Whatever, man.
- 50:43SPEAKER_03: You play your bowl game.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: Like we went through Matt Wells era stuff, and barely like making a bowl game was awesome with Sonny Cumby.
- 50:51SPEAKER_03: We were riding high, but we had an interim coach, we had players enter the transfer portal.
- 50:56SPEAKER_03: Joey was just coming in, and it's like play your bowl game.
- 51:00SPEAKER_03: If if anything, you get 15 extra practices.
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, do something, don't it's such a wuss way to go out, and and you're really just setting a negative precedent of like, hey, if you don't want to play stuff, don't play it, whatever, man.
- 51:16SPEAKER_03: It's like it's so stupid.
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: It's so dumb, dude.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: Like, do you want to play football or not?
- 51:21SPEAKER_01: You know, and what a disservice to your seniors, you know, like it's their football, most of the football careers are completely done at this point, just done.
- 51:28SPEAKER_01: And they don't even get they don't even get that extra game to go out high on and go on vacation with, you know, with their boys.
- 51:34SPEAKER_01: It's just it's done.
- 51:35SPEAKER_01: Um and apps, I I think it's I think it's very, very much a wussy move.
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: I think I think and I hear what a huge disservice to your fans who want to watch you play more, you know, who who who paid a lot of money to go and watch your games and support you.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: And you can't even just do one more game in a in what like the Bahamas, you know, like oh no.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, listen, I get it if you're at the Birmingham Bowl, but no, even that.
- 52:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, you go and you play you go play your bowl game.
- 52:05SPEAKER_03: I know the bowl games don't really matter anymore.
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: I know there's like they're getting you know less and less relevant as we go on, less people are going, whatever.
- 52:14SPEAKER_03: It doesn't mean to feed into it.
- 52:16SPEAKER_03: Like no, Iowa State won eight games, and I know you just lost Matt Campbell.
- 52:20SPEAKER_03: You won eight games, you were gonna be in a decent bowl, but you're you're opting out, whatever is so yeah, I hated, I hated that move.
- 52:28SPEAKER_03: And once once Kansas State did it, it was kind of like uh it was it was everybody was following them, and then Notre Dame was the big one of just being like, okay, that that Notre Dame was the most egregious.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: That was absolutely that was because that one was just a plain throwing his hissy pit with with with K State and Iowa State, and I guess kind of Baylor, you can find you can find out a logical excuse.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: It's still not great, but it's it's a logical excuse.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: Um, but with B uh with Notre Dame, just you are an unserious program.
- 52:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you you do not care about playing football.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: Like you're you're really saying, like, look, if we're not in the playoffs every year, we're not gonna play.
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: It's ridiculous.
- 53:07SPEAKER_01: I I want to say a lot of curse words, but I uh I like really mean curse words about Notre Dame.
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: But um I also this is why so many people dislike Notre Dame.
- 53:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because of this.
- 53:18SPEAKER_03: I never really understood it.
- 53:19SPEAKER_03: This is this high and mighty complex that they have that I and I know they were one of the original college football programs.
- 53:27SPEAKER_03: Whatever, man.
- 53:28SPEAKER_03: That is so stupid to just simply not play when you were right, you're just on the outside, literally the last team that didn't make the playoff, and you're uh it's ridiculous.
- 53:39SPEAKER_01: You you do what all teams that every year a team's gonna be quote unquote snubbed.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: You do what all teams are snubbed do.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: You go and blow out your opponent in the bowl game and be like, see, that's that's what you left out.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: Like you're you now now just like okay, I get a good thing we left you out, then, huh?
- 53:57SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like you you you weren't obviously the one to play ball, so yeah.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: There's too there's too many entitled programs in this sport, too many massive entitled programs that don't think that that think that they are.
- 54:09SPEAKER_03: This is an I think I'm better than you mode from Notre Dame, and that's ridiculous.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: Even that school in Austin's gonna go play a game, and they felt like they were snub too, dude.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: Michigan's doing the same thing.
- 54:19SPEAKER_03: Michigan won a national championship two years ago, and they're going to play the cheese and bowl.
- 54:23SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, why not?
- 54:25SPEAKER_01: Dude, absolutely.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: Like it watching BYU versus Notre Dame would have been awesome.
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: And uh, the Big 12 has a great chance to really make a statement here with these bowl games.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: I really don't see a single bowl game on this list that they should lose.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying they're gonna go undefeated, but I really like all these matchups.
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: So it's well, we'll have to see how they they they break away whenever the games get going.
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: Because I definitely will be cheering for the Big 12.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, if we want to be more than a two-bid league, this is where it happens.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: You got to get out there and make make statements in the out of conference.
- 54:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh it's less so the bulls are not gonna have much of an impact.
- 55:01SPEAKER_03: It's I think the the path forward is scheduling and beating at Arizona State your non-conference games against other conferences, um, and then tech you know, potentially going and making a national championship run here.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: But yep, uh that'd be huge.
- 55:17SPEAKER_03: It would obviously it'd be huge for us for a couple of reasons.
- 55:21SPEAKER_03: Um wanted to quickly finish off before we get to song of the week.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: The most important game of the weekend in the DFW area that Texas Tech played in was of course the basketball game beating LSU.
- 55:36SPEAKER_03: A previously undefeated LSU, might I add.
- 55:40SPEAKER_03: So throttling.
- 55:42SPEAKER_03: Up throttling.
- 55:43SPEAKER_03: And LSU hasn't been good the last couple of years, but this year they were they've actually looked at least pretty decent uh in their non-conference.
- 55:51SPEAKER_03: I don't know who they played so far, but it was nice to see.
- 55:54SPEAKER_03: I didn't I thought about going to the game, but I think I was so tired after three days of just being up there that um I ended up just making the drive down and and caught up with it through the phone.
- 56:04SPEAKER_03: But Christian Anderson, man, it was finally good to see that he because he is the difference maker.
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: If he can be aggressive, and we've been waiting for that in these big games, that Purdue game, he was just not up to snuff, and the whole team wasn't.
- 56:18SPEAKER_03: But if Christian Anderson's aggressive, this basketball team is a lot is a lot better.
- 56:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you've been saying over and over again, and I'm inclined to agree that like don't sweat it yet.
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: You know, you're gonna take these licks early, but you're gonna turn that into progress as you move forward into the season.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: And it I know I absolutely buy that, but dude, it felt so good to blow out a power four opponent.
- 56:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and just it make it make you make you and the fan base feel good about the team again.
- 56:46SPEAKER_01: Like get the USA rocking again, get people believing again.
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: Not that people were losing belief, but it is more it's easier to get to the games whenever you're winning big games like this.
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: So it's it, it's it's just it's a great stamp for the program, a good resume builder as you move forward.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: And speaking of uh Big 12 respect, I think I saw somewhere that the Big 12 is like 16 and one against the SEC this year or something.
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: They're going crazy.
- 57:12SPEAKER_03: They're going crazy.
- 57:13SPEAKER_03: Uh the Big 12 is showing as a conference that they're just unbelievably back as the best uh basketball conference in the country.
- 57:21SPEAKER_03: I know the SEC made a run last year and they got you know a record number of teams in the tournament, but no, this non-conference slate has shown that the Big 12 is the best of the best.
- 57:29SPEAKER_01: We're so back, baby.
- 57:31SPEAKER_03: Arizona, number one team in the country.
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: That's insane, dude.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 57:35SPEAKER_01: Houston, but too bad we have to win it all, though.
- 57:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, too bad that we have to just go and wreck their stuff in in Big 12 play.
- 57:41SPEAKER_03: We play Arkansas next, number seven.
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: On the 13th, and we still have to play Duke at Madison Square Garden, who is looking unbelievable.
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: Duke.
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: So we got to see about ACC football champion Duke.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: I'm talking about known known football school, Duke Blue Devils.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: Uh who got snubbed from the playoffs.
- 58:07SPEAKER_03: I love that that game was the best.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: Seeing that that interception at the end of overtime, I was like, oh my god, the chaos is immaculate.
- 58:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we were ripping on the ACC, but man, what a beautiful, what a beautiful train wreck to watch.
- 58:21SPEAKER_03: Beautiful train wreck.
- 58:22SPEAKER_03: It was amazing all season.
- 58:23SPEAKER_03: Thank you, ACC.
- 58:25SPEAKER_03: Um, very thank you, thank you, Texas Tech, for doing what you did.
- 58:29SPEAKER_03: You guys are awesome.
- 58:31SPEAKER_03: All right, man.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: Song of the week.
- 58:33SPEAKER_03: Go ahead.
- 58:34SPEAKER_01: My song of the week, Steven.
- 58:39SPEAKER_01: Buddy.
- 58:41SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go.
- 58:43SPEAKER_01: I was in I was in Cowboy Stadium and I was saying, you know, there's been there's been some uh pretty famous uh musical artists come through here who have maybe even had their most famous shows in this at least in the in a cowboy stadium ever.
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: Um don't worry, no, this one is the most famous of theirs.
- 59:03SPEAKER_01: And this one goes out to all the Red Raiders out there, young and old, and especially to the ones that are under six feet under the ground at this point in time.
- 59:14SPEAKER_01: This one's for you as well.
- 59:15SPEAKER_01: I'm going with Creed.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: One last breath.
- 59:34SPEAKER_03: Horrific.
- 59:35SPEAKER_03: I didn't I had no idea where you were going with that.
- 59:39SPEAKER_03: I had zero idea.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: You're with us or not.
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: That's for all Red Raiders.
- 59:46SPEAKER_03: Six feet from the edge.
- 59:48SPEAKER_03: Oh loved it.
- 59:51SPEAKER_03: Fantastic choice.
- 59:52SPEAKER_03: Creepy.
- 59:53SPEAKER_03: You can't be that halftime performance.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: I told you it's definitely the most famous.
- 59:58SPEAKER_03: It definitely was.
- 59:59SPEAKER_03: It was that's terrific.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: That's a great song of the week.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_01: I told you it was.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_03: My song of the week.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, everybody could see this one coming.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: West Texas in my eye.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_03: Can't handlers.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_01: I grey peg.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_03: I I had a little, and I think a lot of us had a little West Texas in our eyes seeing Joey Maguire hoist up that trophy uh at the end there.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_03: And uh, of course, they put it they you know, the Texas Tech Media team, who's been phenomenal all season, made the the short video of uh, you know, the the celebration, the confetti coming down, them flying back to Lubbock that evening, celebrating with the fans, and then finally, finally placing that trophy right where it belongs in Lubbock, Texas, right there where they all they had was a little a little post-up sign that said believe.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: And now there's a there's a Big 12 championship trophy there, and uh that was the perfect song choice, and uh it's honestly the perfect song of West Texas.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_06: There's something in the dust and wind that keeps me hanging on, and I never thought I'd live to see the day I take it by.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_06: I'm crying, that's West Texas in my eye.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_01: If there was a uh an official song of West Texas, it has to be that.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a perfect choice.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_01: It's probably been used as song of the week on this pod many times at this point, rightfully so.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but dude, excellent pick, dude.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_01: And uh it was great to see them put that trophy where it belongs.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_01: And now a lot of people are deleting a lot of receipts on Twitter, too, I tell you what, about Texas not having a Big 12 championship.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_03: I might I might have a little video edit that I'll get together right now.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: Go, dude.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_03: We shall see.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_03: Listen, I've been taking some screenshots, that's all I'm saying.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: And shout out, shout out to Ramblin' Raiders and Coach Beans for bookmarking so many phenomenal tweets saying that Texas Tech was not going to do anything this year.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_03: Uh we love you guys.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_03: This was awesome.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_03: I'm glad we all got to relish in this, and I I still can't quite believe it yet, but uh the Texas Tech Red Raiders are Big 12 champions, and there's still a whole lot of season left to go, man.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm so excited.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_03: We always appreciate you guys listening.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_03: Uh follow us on Twitter.

- 1:02:48SPEAKER_01: Big 12 champions, Wrecom Tech.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_05: Uh wow.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_05: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_05: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.

- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: I love you, and I can't wait for this journey.
