- 2:26Speaker 1: And that being said, you know, we brought Dr. Dre
- 2:29Speaker 1: here to discuss, you know, that show that quite a
- 2:33Speaker 1: few people seem to be talking about right now. Lanterns
- 2:36Speaker 1: episode six, bad optics. We got two more left. Let
- 2:43Speaker 1: me just start off saying, right. We have Vanessa baiting
- 2:46Speaker 1: Kelly on here a few weeks ago. Make sure you
- 2:47Speaker 1: check that interview out also on our YouTube. And I've
- 2:51Speaker 1: been emailing them back and forth since. And, They're like, okay,
- 2:54Speaker 1: this week, you're really going to fall in love with Hal.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And I'm like, I already like Hal. Like, love Hal,
- 3:00Speaker 1: you know?
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And this week, I really fell in love with Hal.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And I mean, more so. And then I'm like, yo,
- 3:06Speaker 1: this man might really be dead. And I'm tight.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I am hurt him. Did the body, the cold dead
- 3:14Speaker 2: body underground six feet not deal for you? The man
- 3:18Speaker 2: is gone, Dundada.
- 3:19Speaker 4: I actually am a real Hal Jordan truther. Like, I
- 3:23Speaker 4: don't think that's him.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Oh.
- 3:24Speaker 3: I don't think that's him either.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Do you think that's his, like, what do they call it?
- 3:28Speaker 2: Lifesize carbon?
- 3:30Speaker 1: Life model decoy. Life model decoy. I don't know what
- 3:32Speaker 1: the DC version of that is. But, yeah, I do
- 3:35Speaker 1: not think he's dead.
- 3:37Speaker 3: It's a condom.
- 3:38Speaker 1: What's the thing in Legion, in the Legion of Superheroes?
- 3:41Speaker 1: I know they have this, like, blobby thing that imitates
- 3:45Speaker 1: people when they die. Like, they have this blob-type creature
- 3:48Speaker 1: that they've used to, you know, substitute for people.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Well, in Pokemon, it's called a ditto. So, could have
- 3:53Speaker 2: been a ditto. In Tekken, it's Moku Jin. Like, anybody
- 3:56Speaker 2: could have did that. I hear y'all because... as we
- 4:00Speaker 2: know from this series, whatever you see may not be
- 4:03Speaker 2: actually what you get. Everything, you know, things behind things
- 4:06Speaker 2: behind things as they, as was a song went in
- 4:08Speaker 2: the last episode. Also Damon Lindelof at the end said, yeah,
- 4:12Speaker 2: I wrote him to be died, to be dead.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I wrote him off.
- 4:15Speaker 2: So I'm just like, is he actually dead?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Maybe. I was tight with Damon and you know, another
- 4:21Speaker 1: friend of the show and yeah, I haven't hit him up.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I was just tight.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I was, Yeah. In fact, in the after show credits,
- 4:28Speaker 2: Tom King says that was Damon's idea.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 4:31Speaker 1: From the beginning. So... But there's always trickery involved. Yes. So, yeah.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I do not want my man Hal Jordan to be dead.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I'll just say that. Okay.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I will ride on the part you said about falling
- 4:45Speaker 2: in love with him. I already liked Hal to begin with.
- 4:48Speaker 1: He is.
- 4:50Speaker 2: it was said, Vanessa Bain and Cully said it really best.
- 4:52Speaker 2: He's a man of a certain age. He just be
- 4:54Speaker 2: saying shit half the time. He don't necessarily mean anything
- 4:57Speaker 2: deeper behind it. Sometimes, sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't,
- 5:00Speaker 2: but he's very endearing. And I think he's lovable. Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 2: He's, he's, he's very lovable in an asshole-ish kind of way.
- 5:07Speaker 2: So I'm, I've messed with him from jump street. It
- 5:10Speaker 2: was just things that he was doing. Like, like everyone
- 5:13Speaker 2: has that one good friend that you would really ride
- 5:17Speaker 2: for them if they just got their shit together. And
- 5:20Speaker 2: I feel like he's that type of guy where it's
- 5:21Speaker 2: just like you always hang out with them. You cool
- 5:24Speaker 2: with them. But it's just one little thing about that.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Don't curl all the way over that. You're just like
- 5:28Speaker 2: if you just wasn't such a ass, you know, maybe
- 5:31Speaker 2: maybe this would be a better experience or a better relationship.
- 5:33Speaker 2: But that doesn't stop you from being friends with them.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And that's how I feel about how that's more of
- 5:37Speaker 2: what I got from this episode.
- 5:40Speaker 3: I think we all know how Jordan we all have
- 5:42Speaker 3: a how Jordan is.
- 5:43Speaker 4: In our lives and we're like at least for me
- 5:46Speaker 4: I feel like look I don't want to I don't
- 5:49Speaker 4: want to teach you like I'm I'll be friends with
- 5:52Speaker 4: you I think you have my back like I'm thinking
- 5:55Speaker 4: about how Jon Stewart's dealing with this mentorship slash betrayal
- 6:03Speaker 4: and they keep like even now this this episode starts
- 6:07Speaker 4: in 2026 right so even now we're seeing how again
- 6:11Speaker 4: and again they're sort of brought back together, that there's
- 6:14Speaker 4: this something that pulls them back together. And I think
- 6:19Speaker 4: they're meant to learn from each other, especially Hal. He
- 6:23Speaker 4: is imperfect. He's full of flaws. He got corrupted by
- 6:29Speaker 4: the ring. And it's a lesson. That itself is a
- 6:33Speaker 4: lesson for John.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Is it the ring that corrupts? And I want to
- 6:38Speaker 2: talk about that a little bit because every time I
- 6:40Speaker 2: see the ring and people talk about what the ring
- 6:42Speaker 2: has done to people, it often reminds me of things
- 6:45Speaker 2: like money. Like when people say, oh, you know, you
- 6:47Speaker 2: got the money. Now you act this way, you act
- 6:49Speaker 2: that way. And I feel like the person was always
- 6:51Speaker 2: that way or the person always acted a certain way.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They just now that they have the means to do
- 6:57Speaker 2: more with it, it's more intensified, if you will, like.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I feel like people who are assholes are just more
- 7:03Speaker 2: asshole when they get money, right? Or people who are
- 7:05Speaker 2: very kind are more kind when they get money. Like
- 7:08Speaker 2: if that's intrinsic to you, I just think the money,
- 7:10Speaker 2: or in this case, the ring just makes it worse
- 7:13Speaker 2: or intensify it, if you will. Is it really the
- 7:16Speaker 2: ring that corrupts?
- 7:18Speaker 4: My understanding is that in the comics, the ring is
- 7:20Speaker 4: more of an extension of the person, including their personhood,
- 7:24Speaker 4: their values, their ideas, their intelligence, everything that makes up
- 7:27Speaker 4: that person. And so it's going to be a different,
- 7:31Speaker 4: whoever holds the ring has a different manifestation of what
- 7:36Speaker 4: that superpower is and what that leadership looks like.
- 7:40Speaker 3: In the show, it's slightly different.
- 7:43Speaker 4: It's more of a separate object, but I agree with
- 7:45Speaker 4: you that the symbolism of this ring is what is
- 7:50Speaker 4: powerful in, in the same way that, you know, in,
- 7:53Speaker 4: in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, uh, everyone has a
- 7:57Speaker 4: different reaction. It's the context of how the ring impacts
- 8:00Speaker 4: you and what, what kind of deep psychology do you,
- 8:05Speaker 4: do you hold? And that's how you're going to interact
- 8:08Speaker 4: with and operate with when you, when you have the ring. Um,
- 8:13Speaker 4: So yeah, I think it's a little bit of column A,
- 8:15Speaker 4: column B, but the idea that fearlessness is some kind
- 8:23Speaker 4: of driver is something that I really challenge because in
- 8:26Speaker 4: our experience of Hal, when I think of how he's behaving,
- 8:32Speaker 4: I think a lot of that is fearful. I think
- 8:35Speaker 4: he's not fearless anymore.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And I think that's, I won't say like a misconception,
- 8:41Speaker 1: but I think people are always uh, maybe get a misconstrued,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I guess is the word. Like, I don't think the
- 8:47Speaker 1: ring is looking for you to not have fear. I
- 8:50Speaker 1: think that's impossible for a human. I think it's the
- 8:52Speaker 1: ability to overcome that fear and to face fear that
- 8:55Speaker 1: on and to keep moving is what the ring is
- 8:58Speaker 1: talking about. And I think, how does that like, well,
- 9:01Speaker 1: how does get fearful? Like any person would, he keeps
- 9:05Speaker 1: it moving. And like he says, I'm always right. And,
- 9:09Speaker 1: you know, That's something I did want to ask you though, Dre,
- 9:12Speaker 1: is because I know the idea is that it's will
- 9:16Speaker 1: that drives the ring. And like, I don't know if
- 9:19Speaker 1: those two always pull inside, right? The idea of having
- 9:22Speaker 1: not fearing and having will, I think having will allow
- 9:25Speaker 1: you to get over, you know, the idea of fear,
- 9:28Speaker 1: but will doesn't automatically mean good, you know, especially by
- 9:32Speaker 1: what we determine, you know, more realistically as good. So,
- 9:38Speaker 1: I don't know if any Green Lanterns have especially been villains, right?
- 9:43Speaker 1: Has that ever been shown? I mean, other than Hal Jordan.
- 9:47Speaker 2: I mean, I said other than some stories in the book, right? And,
- 9:50Speaker 2: you know, say what you want about Guy Gardner, right?
- 9:53Speaker 1: No, because, yeah, when Hal was going around killing the
- 9:55Speaker 1: rest of the Lantern Corps, he was still a Green Lantern, right? Yeah,
- 9:58Speaker 1: he hadn't turned over to the yellow... right? I don't know.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I'm asking, too, because I'm just like, damn, you could
- 10:04Speaker 2: still be part of the club, you could be part
- 10:06Speaker 2: of gang, and you're killing your own gang members? Like,
- 10:08Speaker 2: I ain't know that. I thought at that point, you
- 10:10Speaker 2: on your own island, you're your own man unto yourself
- 10:13Speaker 2: at that point. Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Well, at one point, Hal Jordan does go around killing
- 10:16Speaker 1: off a bunch of the Green Lantern Corps. And we
- 10:19Speaker 1: were talking about this a few weeks ago. And I
- 10:20Speaker 1: know he collects their rings and gains more power as
- 10:24Speaker 1: he's collecting them. And it's revealed later that he's under
- 10:26Speaker 1: control of Parallax and all that type of stuff. But
- 10:29Speaker 1: at that point, he was still green. But the main
- 10:32Speaker 1: point is, I don't think it really distinguishes between what
- 10:35Speaker 1: is good or evil as much as what is willful. Which...
- 10:39Speaker 1: Seems to be kind of problematic.
- 10:41Speaker 4: What is willful and what is in service or who
- 10:43Speaker 4: is in service to the guardians? Because I don't think
- 10:46Speaker 4: the guardians tolerate any kind of subversion of their order.
- 10:53Speaker 4: So I think you can really piss them off. And
- 10:55Speaker 4: if you piss them off, I think they start looking
- 10:57Speaker 4: for your replacement. So I think, I think that's maybe
- 11:01Speaker 4: the most consistent part of the lore is that as
- 11:05Speaker 4: a Green Lantern, you're in service to the guardians. And
- 11:08Speaker 4: when you take that oath, when you wear the ring,
- 11:10Speaker 4: when you represent that leadership, that's the order that you
- 11:15Speaker 4: commit to. And I think to your point, that may
- 11:19Speaker 4: be in opposition or misalignment with your own values. So
- 11:24Speaker 4: just like when folks serve in the military or they,
- 11:27Speaker 4: they're part of a big corporation or they have that
- 11:30Speaker 4: kind of like, you know, that moral distress, that, is
- 11:35Speaker 4: in part due to that misalignment between your individual values
- 11:39Speaker 4: and then who you're in service to and who you
- 11:42Speaker 4: show yourself publicly to. And when those decisions become really,
- 11:46Speaker 4: or when the gap between the two become really big,
- 11:51Speaker 4: that's when we start to see, I think, some of
- 11:53Speaker 4: the things we see in Hal. Aggression, resentment, violence, people
- 11:59Speaker 4: being messy. Like, Hal got really messy. And so I
- 12:02Speaker 4: think his psychology is like, what's happening? Have you broken?
- 12:07Speaker 4: And are we seeing a result of your breakdown?
- 12:14Speaker 1: All right, well, that's a question I have then. All right, one,
- 12:19Speaker 1: we're under the assumption that Hal is dead right now, okay?
- 12:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And two, does Hal know that someone is coming to
- 12:27Speaker 1: kill him? Possibly.
- 12:29Speaker 2: The man is very astute.
- 12:31Speaker 1: He tells John, don't mention to anyone that I'm in town.
- 12:35Speaker 1: He has a shotgun aimed at the front door, so....
- 12:40Speaker 2: Who did it?
- 12:41Speaker 1: That does lead to the next question, yeah. Because, you know,
- 12:44Speaker 1: that is part of the question. Does Hal know who
- 12:47Speaker 1: someone's coming to kill him and who did it? So, yeah,
- 12:51Speaker 1: let's just get that one out the way. Okay.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Shout out to Black Day Comic Geek, who was on
- 12:57Speaker 2: last episode. He pointed to Noah, the son, Zoe's grandson.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Yes, a lot of people. On our last live that
- 13:06Speaker 1: we did, Noah was the overwhelming favorite. ridiculous favorite for
- 13:11Speaker 1: the murderer. I don't believe it.
- 13:15Speaker 2: But that it's, he's a secondary manhunter as well. So
- 13:17Speaker 2: I was just like, this shit is wild to me, but, um, that,
- 13:22Speaker 2: that is the, I'm going to go with the internet theory.
- 13:24Speaker 2: That is Noah.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Okay. Uh, my potentials are husband, Billy too much. Yeah.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Too much of a sucker is my name. Uh, I
- 13:35Speaker 1: have John with a question mark.
- 13:37Speaker 2: John be lying. Everybody be lying. Which is another question
- 13:41Speaker 2: I have for Dr. Dre later, but go ahead.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Yep. And then my main potentials are Bernadette, Noah, John,
- 13:49Speaker 1: and Sheriff Carrie.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Sheriff Kane. So Sheriff Carrie Kane, I could see because
- 13:58Speaker 2: she's very sketchy to me. I don't know if it's
- 14:01Speaker 2: just me, but I keep picking up sketch vibes from
- 14:03Speaker 2: her every time she speaks about something. It's like every
- 14:07Speaker 2: word she says is shrouded in mystery and doublespeak almost.
- 14:11Speaker 2: And even the way she coyly chats with John, I'm
- 14:16Speaker 2: just like... How is you getting that? Like, what are
- 14:19Speaker 2: you what are you trying to actually say to me? Like,
- 14:22Speaker 2: it always sounds like it's a secret that like she's
- 14:24Speaker 2: trying to I got a secret for you, but I
- 14:26Speaker 2: can't tell you. Like, it's strange. And I just keep
- 14:30Speaker 2: getting this overwhelming feeling every time she speaks about anything.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I'm just like, what are you hiding? What is actually
- 14:34Speaker 2: going on? what is the truth? Cause we also still,
- 14:37Speaker 2: there's still backstory from her that we still don't even
- 14:39Speaker 2: really know. We don't really, you know, we got some,
- 14:42Speaker 2: you know, we got some information all the last before,
- 14:44Speaker 2: you know, about her past, but I'm just like, who
- 14:45Speaker 2: are you really? Who's you related to?
- 14:47Speaker 3: What is this all about?
- 14:48Speaker 1: Go ahead, Ben. What's her motive?
- 14:51Speaker 2: What's your motive? And then even like her, the way
- 14:54Speaker 2: she was moving with.
- 14:55Speaker 1: John, like, Oh, I'm asking what is the motive? What
- 14:57Speaker 1: would be her motive? Yeah. Yeah. I don't know.
- 15:01Speaker 2: That last name Kane got a lot of, got a
- 15:02Speaker 2: lot of baggage to it. Who knows?
- 15:05Speaker 3: Who is she in service to?
- 15:08Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 15:09Speaker 4: That's the under, cause I agree that she's shady. I
- 15:11Speaker 4: don't know why. And I don't think she, I don't
- 15:14Speaker 4: think she killed him. I don't think so either, but
- 15:17Speaker 4: I definitely think she's shady and she may know more
- 15:20Speaker 4: than she's telling John. And what you just said, the motive,
- 15:25Speaker 4: I think there's so much, underlying motive, underlying need. Sometimes
- 15:31Speaker 4: I will say unmet need. Like some of this is easy.
- 15:35Speaker 4: We know John's unmet needs. John's unmet needs. This is
- 15:39Speaker 4: a man who has been in service to so many
- 15:44Speaker 4: orders and authority, but has not felt a sense of
- 15:49Speaker 4: self-security and self-fulfillment because he's always in service to, he's
- 15:53Speaker 4: in service to the Marines. He's in service to the government.
- 15:56Speaker 4: He's in service to the guardians in some way. He
- 15:59Speaker 4: was in service to Hal, surely in service to his
- 16:01Speaker 4: parents who militarized his upbringing. So he, I would say
- 16:08Speaker 4: he's a, he's an easy case in the sense that
- 16:10Speaker 4: we know what his unmet needs are.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:12Speaker 4: And, and so that's on the table with everyone around.
- 16:16Speaker 4: I don't really know what's going on. with these suspects,
- 16:22Speaker 4: what are their motivations? What are their unmet needs and
- 16:24Speaker 4: who are they in service to? That for me is
- 16:26Speaker 4: still very confusing.
- 16:28Speaker 2: That's all I could think of about motivating. Who is
- 16:30Speaker 2: she doing as a service to? Cause that last name
- 16:32Speaker 2: got some weight to it. If it's even meant to
- 16:35Speaker 2: be connected to the Kane family.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Red herrings.
- 16:40Speaker 4: That kid, Noah, I think that Noah is another red herring. He's, he's,
- 16:44Speaker 4: he's sort of has this, um, kind of mysterious expression. He's,
- 16:49Speaker 4: he's not very forthcoming. He, uh, Zoe told him, you know,
- 16:54Speaker 4: remember what I told you?
- 16:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Like she, he knows about everything that I told you.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Everything.
- 17:00Speaker 3: What is that?
- 17:01Speaker 4: Is that, Oh, you're going to, you're going to call
- 17:04Speaker 4: the government to help the city. Was that, that, that
- 17:08Speaker 4: couldn't have been it. The city is going to be destroyed.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Call the government, call the feds to get, to get,
- 17:16Speaker 4: social services and, and no resources. I don't think that
- 17:19Speaker 4: was all the plan. I think there's more to it
- 17:21Speaker 4: than that.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I don't know. It's too calm for me for someone
- 17:25Speaker 2: who like you've as a kid, you clearly loved your
- 17:28Speaker 2: grandmother so much. I don't know if you knew the
- 17:29Speaker 2: truth behind what she was, but, for that conversation to happen.
- 17:34Speaker 2: And clearly he's been indoctrinated in some way, which is
- 17:37Speaker 2: why I can't let him off the suspect list. Well,
- 17:39Speaker 2: I'm just like, he's just, he's just too cool and
- 17:41Speaker 2: calm for me. And I don't trust that. It's just like,
- 17:43Speaker 2: he's like, Oh, Hey John, what's up? Like, Oh, you
- 17:47Speaker 2: beat up my dad. He probably deserved it. Like real flat.
- 17:49Speaker 2: And I was just like, not to say that he
- 17:51Speaker 2: needed to, to like stand for his dad. Clearly that
- 17:54Speaker 2: relationship is weird, but it was just something off and
- 17:58Speaker 2: strange about it. Just his kind of accept. And that's
- 18:02Speaker 2: another thing. What kind of relationship is that? That would like,
- 18:05Speaker 2: he met John like twice. If that. So why did,
- 18:08Speaker 2: how did it like, he came back like, Hey uncle John,
- 18:10Speaker 2: what's up? Like, it was like, I don't, I haven't
- 18:13Speaker 2: seen this man in 10 years. I'm like 52 years
- 18:14Speaker 2: old now, whatever, how old, you know, Noah is, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 2: young twenties, but it's just like, or sorry, he was
- 18:20Speaker 2: graduating high school, 18, whatever point is. It just, for
- 18:24Speaker 2: someone you don't even really know like that, but you
- 18:26Speaker 2: got some potentially bad blood with for various reasons for
- 18:30Speaker 2: you to just be real chill with them. It gave suspicious.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Yeah. also has a suit ready-made for John or found
- 18:40Speaker 1: that it's like... I wanted to ask about that. tailor-made, too,
- 18:43Speaker 1: because John, you know, is quite a physique, and there's
- 18:46Speaker 1: no way you just dip that joint off the rack.
- 18:49Speaker 2: He just had a suit out of nowhere, and it
- 18:51Speaker 2: fit perfectly.
- 18:51Speaker 3: And it was his dad's, but... His dad is, like,
- 18:54Speaker 3: two feet tall.
- 18:55Speaker 2: There's no way.
- 18:56Speaker 1: His dad is literally two feet shorter than John. Like,
- 19:01Speaker 1: no way.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Who's your other suspect? You said Carrie Kane. Who else....
- 19:07Speaker 1: Moms.
- 19:08Speaker 5: Bernadette.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Dr.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Andrea's face. She said, oh, gosh. This case. This case study.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't even think about her. And now that
- 19:20Speaker 4: you say it, I wouldn't put it past her.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I wouldn't put it past her, but.
- 19:28Speaker 2: What's her motivation?
- 19:29Speaker 1: There we go. Her motivation. It's like the will to
- 19:32Speaker 1: do it. No problem. The anger, et cetera, that would
- 19:37Speaker 1: lead her to do it. In fact, someone suggested maybe
- 19:40Speaker 1: she played one last, you know, apple on the head
- 19:44Speaker 1: game with Hal. Let's see if you still got it, buddy.
- 19:49Speaker 1: I bet you ain't still got it, Hal. You know?
- 19:52Speaker 2: Pow!
- 19:52Speaker 1: Shot him in the face. But that's where it stops. Like,
- 19:57Speaker 1: I don't see why after that. Like, people say to
- 20:00Speaker 1: bring John back into the game, and I don't think so.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Because that wouldn't get John back in the game. Yeah,
- 20:05Speaker 1: it's like, and she knows that John turned down the ring.
- 20:09Speaker 1: It's not like Hal kept the ring from John. So
- 20:13Speaker 1: shooting Hal is not going to get him back in
- 20:15Speaker 1: the game other than to come investigate the murder of Hal,
- 20:21Speaker 1: which she's going to figure out. He's going to dig
- 20:23Speaker 1: up the grave and get a ring out. No, no.
- 20:25Speaker 1: That seems too far-fetched. So I got to... Unless y'all
- 20:30Speaker 1: got another reason for her motivation, I'm edging her off. No.
- 20:34Speaker 4: I was just wondering if you had thought That perhaps
- 20:40Speaker 4: this was self-inflicted.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I thought that because they said how close it was.
- 20:45Speaker 2: And I mean, hell, you could have used the ring. Well,
- 20:48Speaker 2: he didn't have the ring. I was going to say
- 20:49Speaker 2: he could have used the ring to like levitate in
- 20:50Speaker 2: front of him. But yeah, I don't know, man.
- 20:53Speaker 1: What can a hologram do is the question.
- 20:56Speaker 2: But he had to have the ring on him. He
- 20:57Speaker 2: didn't have the ring on him. Remember when John went
- 21:01Speaker 2: to check the frozen body of how he had no
- 21:03Speaker 2: ring on. So presumably he didn't have the ring on
- 21:06Speaker 2: when he sat there in the first place.
- 21:09Speaker 1: But the hologram... Or did he.
- 21:11Speaker 2: They have some... And that's the thing. It's like, the
- 21:13Speaker 2: more elaborate thought is probably the wrong thought, because why
- 21:15Speaker 2: is it so elaborate? Like, he created the situation with
- 21:18Speaker 2: the hologram to take the ring off of him after
- 21:21Speaker 2: he killed himself and go hide into the vault. And, like, what? Like,
- 21:24Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't think we're... I don't know.
- 21:28Speaker 2: It's not about solving the mystery of who did it.
- 21:31Speaker 2: It's more like, what makes the most sense?
- 21:33Speaker 1: Like.
- 21:34Speaker 2: what players are in this space and who have we
- 21:38Speaker 2: not paying attention to? Because there's somebody that we are
- 21:40Speaker 2: just not paying attention to properly.
- 21:43Speaker 1: And the why.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Why would they? Who would want Hal to be at
- 21:51Speaker 4: this time? Because at this time, he's decommissioned. He's, you know,
- 21:57Speaker 4: he's spent his time in prison. He's dating the sheriff.
- 22:04Speaker 4: It's casual. I don't think they're being as open about it.
- 22:07Speaker 4: But who is he bothering? Who would want him?
- 22:11Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 22:14Speaker 4: I was thinking it would summon John back to that
- 22:18Speaker 4: small town.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Yes.
- 22:20Speaker 4: But he had already been called back by Bernadette. So
- 22:24Speaker 4: it's like the math isn't mathing, and I sure hope
- 22:28Speaker 4: they make it make sense.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Just for shits and giggles, John's daddy did it.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Because that man do not mess with that. He does
- 22:35Speaker 2: not mess with Hal whatsoever. And he's trigger happy, apparently.
- 22:39Speaker 1: But he's also got the alibi of being.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Being in the home.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Comfort Cove. Yes.
- 22:46Speaker 2: The old folks home. I don't know, bro. I don't know.
- 22:49Speaker 1: But... Bernadette would stick out like a sore thumb in
- 22:52Speaker 1: that town as well.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:55Speaker 1: That's right. I don't know. It goes back to Noah...
- 22:58Speaker 1: It just feels too obvious to.
- 23:03Speaker 2: I don't know, but I do. You know, when you
- 23:05Speaker 2: mentioned psychology, Dr. Dre, and then you then mentioned Bernadette,
- 23:09Speaker 2: I wanted to really dive into that whole situation, the
- 23:12Speaker 2: psychology between Bernadette and John. And I don't you know,
- 23:16Speaker 2: I want to make sure that I can go into
- 23:17Speaker 2: this because that was one of the more powerful points
- 23:20Speaker 2: of this episode to me when he was when John
- 23:22Speaker 2: was on the phone with his mom and was just
- 23:24Speaker 2: like Bernadette. First of all, I don't know in other cultures.
- 23:29Speaker 2: In my culture, we do not speak to our parents,
- 23:32Speaker 2: let alone friends or elders by their first name. At
- 23:35Speaker 2: least Mr.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Or Miss, right?
- 23:36Speaker 2: And if it's your parent, regardless of what's going on,
- 23:38Speaker 2: typically it's their mom, dad, or whatever. For there to
- 23:43Speaker 2: be a Me, lack of respect, which means kind of
- 23:46Speaker 2: a broken relationship, amongst other things. And the fact that
- 23:50Speaker 2: the mom is just like, cool with it. Like, it
- 23:52Speaker 2: kind of seems like that's just how it is now. Like,
- 23:56Speaker 2: is this just the culmination of everything the mother had put,
- 24:01Speaker 2: who set into motion with John since he was a
- 24:03Speaker 2: little boy? And now that he's essentially coming back into
- 24:06Speaker 2: his own, he's like, that's how he addresses her. And
- 24:09Speaker 2: it's like, is there a law of loss there? Like,
- 24:11Speaker 2: please tell me what you thought about that.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I mean, you're right.
- 24:14Speaker 3: It's really complicated.
- 24:15Speaker 4: John is a fully grown adult now trying to develop
- 24:20Speaker 4: into his own person after so many years of being
- 24:25Speaker 4: someone else's son, mentee, soldier.
- 24:30Speaker 3: He has to.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Undo and unpack so much of his own sense of
- 24:37Speaker 4: self and what he believes in and who he cares
- 24:41Speaker 4: about and what his own... you know, sense of morality is,
- 24:45Speaker 4: that that takes a long time. And I think that
- 24:48Speaker 4: the boundaries, I think what we're seeing over these phone
- 24:51Speaker 4: calls is, like, first of all, I'm scared. Like, if
- 24:56Speaker 4: I had my mom on the phone like that, like.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. I'd be so scared. I'm in trouble. What does
- 25:03Speaker 3: she need? What did I do wrong? I actually think
- 25:07Speaker 3: he's still scared of her.
- 25:09Speaker 4: And I think this is a grown man trying to
- 25:12Speaker 4: form healthy boundaries with no idea how to do that.
- 25:16Speaker 4: So how does he know how to not insult her,
- 25:21Speaker 4: but just put her in her place? In a way
- 25:23Speaker 4: that she knows what that's signaling. And I think you're right.
- 25:26Speaker 4: I think this has been going on, you know, for
- 25:28Speaker 4: the last 10 years. He's failed the Guardians. He's failed Hal.
- 25:33Speaker 4: He's failed her. And this is resentment. And this is
- 25:37Speaker 4: him trying to come into his own. And not for nothing,
- 25:40Speaker 4: the man has been successful. He's making millions of dollars.
- 25:43Speaker 4: He has his own architect firm. He's taking care of himself.
- 25:48Speaker 4: You know, talk about optics. This episode is called Bad Optics.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 25:53Speaker 4: Any stranger would look at this man and say, he's
- 25:55Speaker 4: got it together. And at some point he's even asked,
- 25:58Speaker 4: are you happy? And he says, yes. And all of
- 26:00Speaker 4: us know he's, this man is not happy.
- 26:02Speaker 2: No, that pause too. When he said it, he was
- 26:04Speaker 2: just like, I'm in terrible shape right now, but I'm
- 26:07Speaker 2: just going to say yes to get it over with. Right.
- 26:10Speaker 4: So I, I think it's complicated and you're right. There's
- 26:13Speaker 4: a very visceral distance between them and yet a sense
- 26:18Speaker 4: of responsibility is The way that he's being talked to
- 26:21Speaker 4: by all his family members, including her, is like, no, no, no,
- 26:25Speaker 4: you're responsible. You're the chosen.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:30Speaker 4: You're supposed to help everybody. And I'm so mad. That
- 26:33Speaker 4: makes me so mad for this little boy.
- 26:37Speaker 2: That that is hard to like the whole chosen moniker,
- 26:40Speaker 2: because it's like it just reminds me of it just
- 26:42Speaker 2: transports me back to when they were younger. And like
- 26:45Speaker 2: they were making fun of him in the car for,
- 26:46Speaker 2: you know, saying all the syllables and the words and
- 26:48Speaker 2: stuff like that. Like it's them vocalizing there. I don't
- 26:52Speaker 2: want to say disdain, but like they're not pleased with
- 26:55Speaker 2: how they were separated from him. But at the same time,
- 26:57Speaker 2: it's just like. I don't even want to say jealousy,
- 27:01Speaker 2: but it's like a riff of jealousy. Like, well, you're
- 27:04Speaker 2: the chosen one, right? You're the one who's in charge
- 27:06Speaker 2: of everything. You got it all together. You got to
- 27:07Speaker 2: do it for us. Like we find out, uh, what's
- 27:10Speaker 2: his other brother's name?
- 27:10Speaker 1: Aaron.
- 27:11Speaker 2: He's bankrolling Aaron's, I guess Aaron wants to be a rapper.
- 27:13Speaker 2: He's bankrolling Aaron's album, right? Marcus is his business partner,
- 27:17Speaker 2: his other brother, like the, his father going off in
- 27:20Speaker 2: the home and the mother's constantly calling him. You saw
- 27:23Speaker 2: it was like four or five minutes call. So I'm
- 27:24Speaker 2: just like, to be the one to shoulder the burden
- 27:27Speaker 2: of the entire family still, like, but in a different way,
- 27:30Speaker 2: it's like, all right, you didn't want to be the lantern,
- 27:32Speaker 2: but you still in charge of everything. Like you still
- 27:34Speaker 2: got to fix everything. Like I get why you're saying like,
- 27:37Speaker 2: that made you mad. It's, it's, it's, it's really hard
- 27:41Speaker 2: to like, especially I know like, like I'm a, I'm a,
- 27:43Speaker 2: what's they call the, the first daughter, you know, the,
- 27:46Speaker 2: the eldest daughter syndrome. Like I know what that feels
- 27:48Speaker 2: like to have all the weight put on you.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:51Speaker 4: If folks haven't heard your recap of episode three, you know,
- 27:55Speaker 4: I think that's an important critical reading, required reading for
- 28:01Speaker 4: your viewers, because y'all gave some examples of how, yes,
- 28:06Speaker 4: all of our reactions were like, this mom is crazy.
- 28:09Speaker 4: But we all, especially when it comes to not just
- 28:14Speaker 4: her family dynamic, but being given a the opportunity that
- 28:18Speaker 4: she was given by the guardians, you know, essentially saying he's, he,
- 28:22Speaker 4: he could be the next green lantern.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:25Speaker 4: I think all of your stories really bring that to
- 28:28Speaker 4: life where we, we begin to see.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Actually, is she that crazy?
- 28:34Speaker 4: We have, like, I thought about my own mom, uh,
- 28:39Speaker 4: as a, as an immigrant to this country, if she
- 28:42Speaker 4: was given an opportunity and she had to make some
- 28:44Speaker 4: sacrifices and, she best know she would do all of that.
- 28:49Speaker 4: She would do all of that and more. And this
- 28:51Speaker 4: isn't a slight on my own mom. This isn't saying
- 28:53Speaker 4: that she didn't love me or care about me, but
- 28:55Speaker 4: she would, I think she would do extreme things for.
- 29:00Speaker 4: For my success, including something that may not have been
- 29:06Speaker 4: healthy or.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Safe for me.
- 29:09Speaker 4: And I think, you know, again, how y'all talked about that,
- 29:14Speaker 4: I think is really important to put some context into
- 29:17Speaker 4: the nature of that family dynamic and the behavior of Bernadette,
- 29:23Speaker 4: where it's like, yeah, I think a lot.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Of us could say it's justified.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. And even something that I don't think we might
- 29:31Speaker 1: have touched on enough even then was that Bernadette is
- 29:36Speaker 1: doing her best to save her entire family. Like, it's
- 29:39Speaker 1: not about. John. Like, her husband has gone off, you know, everything.
- 29:44Speaker 1: You know, the man of her dreams, her love of
- 29:46Speaker 1: her life has lost his mind. And she, for a time,
- 29:52Speaker 1: does not believe him. And then this alien comes down,
- 29:55Speaker 1: proves it real, gives you a diamond, tells you your
- 29:58Speaker 1: son could be space Jesus' copy. And this will save
- 30:00Speaker 1: your family. So it's like, yeah, I'm going to do
- 30:03Speaker 1: whatever it takes to save my family. And so in
- 30:05Speaker 1: that instance, I don't ever really look at her as crazy.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I think she's in an insane world. And in this
- 30:11Speaker 1: insane world is faced with an insane choice and, you know,
- 30:15Speaker 1: makes the best of it. And given what she knows,
- 30:19Speaker 1: and I feel like that's the same thing. I have
- 30:21Speaker 1: to look at my father and my family a lot.
- 30:23Speaker 1: You know, like I said, I always say that about
- 30:25Speaker 1: my dad is that he did, you know, Like we say,
- 30:29Speaker 1: the best we can with what he got, you know,
- 30:32Speaker 1: like he it's like he didn't have all the information.
- 30:35Speaker 1: He didn't have all the training to be a good
- 30:38Speaker 1: father because his father wasn't there like that. And so,
- 30:42Speaker 1: you know, you do what you can and you're also
- 30:44Speaker 1: surviving in this America that is doing its best to
- 30:48Speaker 1: kill you and your family and your kids. So you're
- 30:51Speaker 1: going to do everything to protect them, including things that,
- 30:55Speaker 1: you know, might not always be the most healthy choice.
- 30:57Speaker 2: But, you know, like lying to John, saying that Hal
- 30:59Speaker 2: wants to apologize. To get him in Rushville.
- 31:05Speaker 1: And OK, so if she wanted him there, they're like
- 31:08Speaker 1: you say, motivations. And I like how you said that unmet,
- 31:14Speaker 1: unmet needs. Yeah. Yeah. Why did she want him there
- 31:18Speaker 1: in the first place?
- 31:20Speaker 2: Well, she said she'd been talking to Hal while he
- 31:24Speaker 2: was in jail.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:26Speaker 2: You know, putting money on the commissary and shit. So maybe, like,
- 31:30Speaker 2: she really felt that bad. That's what she says. She
- 31:31Speaker 2: said she felt bad about the man. She felt that
- 31:34Speaker 2: he's grown over the years.
- 31:36Speaker 1: No. This is a cold-blooded... Yeah. Mm-mm. This is Bernadette
- 31:41Speaker 1: we're talking about.
- 31:42Speaker 2: No.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Plotting and making moves are her specialty. Not, you know,
- 31:48Speaker 1: doing things because she felt a way.
- 31:52Speaker 2: She wouldn't have set up her own son, though.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Would she? No, not set up.
- 31:57Speaker 3: No.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Maybe to reestablish a relationship with John and the Lanterns
- 32:03Speaker 4: in some way. And how was the connection to that?
- 32:07Speaker 4: Although you'd think, because she also had connections to the Guardians,
- 32:11Speaker 4: that she would leverage that relationship. But I agree with
- 32:16Speaker 4: you that not everything is as it seems. That there's
- 32:20Speaker 4: always a second version or an alternate version of what
- 32:24Speaker 4: we're hearing. And I'm, I've lost, I sort of feel
- 32:27Speaker 4: like some folks don't have, the only person I feel is,
- 32:30Speaker 4: is credible. And by credible, I mean, I sort of
- 32:33Speaker 4: see like, what does Zoe say?
- 32:35Speaker 3: Like, you see me?
- 32:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 32:40Speaker 4: Like, I feel, I feel like we, when it comes
- 32:43Speaker 4: to John, I feel like we, we do find him credible.
- 32:47Speaker 4: We do find him authentic, but he's surrounded by people,
- 32:50Speaker 4: who are not credible, who are shapeshifters, who have ulterior motives,
- 32:56Speaker 4: who are shady, who withhold. So he's sort of our
- 32:59Speaker 4: center stone. Like, I feel like that's intentional where the
- 33:07Speaker 4: story is told around him and his is the truth
- 33:09Speaker 4: that we can find some grounding in.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 33:12Speaker 2: And you basically started answering my question I had about
- 33:15Speaker 2: the lies, right?
- 33:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. That's what I wanted to do.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Yeah. Like, okay, so... Everything from John's point of view
- 33:22Speaker 2: is the truth and everybody else is just muddying the waters.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Is this what this is?
- 33:28Speaker 4: Or is it something else? I mean, as true as
- 33:32Speaker 4: he believes it to be. I think we're meant to
- 33:35Speaker 4: see it from his perspective. And it's a biased perspective.
- 33:39Speaker 4: Some of it may be somewhat skewed. But that's, I
- 33:42Speaker 4: don't know, the nearest to truth that I can find
- 33:45Speaker 4: is how he navigates his world, his universe. And as he,
- 33:52Speaker 4: you know, even as he's digging the grave and making
- 33:57Speaker 4: some choices, we start to see his plotting.
- 34:02Speaker 3: We start to see what is up with him.
- 34:05Speaker 4: And I meant to believe that, and maybe this was
- 34:10Speaker 4: already obvious, but I believe that he really had no
- 34:17Speaker 4: interest in the formalities of this funeral procession, that it
- 34:22Speaker 4: didn't matter to him nor to Hal that the ring
- 34:25Speaker 4: and the suit was... at his burial, I think that's
- 34:29Speaker 4: just John wanting the ring so that he could go
- 34:31Speaker 4: back to the, um, to the storage of solitude and
- 34:35Speaker 4: open up that vault.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah.
- 34:37Speaker 2: The name of it was hilarious, by the way, the fortress. Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 2: The storage storage unit of solitude or whatever you call it.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Fortress because it's Superman has the fortress of solitude and
- 34:47Speaker 1: the fortress of storage.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Fortress of storage.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 34:50Speaker 2: That's what the, that's the name.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Um, Is it beneath the Guardians to do something like that?
- 34:56Speaker 2: To shoot and kill? How?
- 34:59Speaker 1: Is this really a Guardian?
- 35:02Speaker 2: Listen, this whole rogue agent situation that we've been talking
- 35:05Speaker 2: about on this podcast.
- 35:08Speaker 1: This will lead to another question. Who freed Sinestro?
- 35:12Speaker 2: The Guardians. Because Sinestro and the Guardians were working together
- 35:15Speaker 2: from the beginning. That's my, you know, C-O conspiracy for
- 35:21Speaker 2: the episode. C-O-N-spiracy.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Just throwing that one out there, right?
- 35:25Speaker 2: Yeah, just throwing it out there. No backing whatsoever.
- 35:28Speaker 1: The earth is flat. I made it up. It's just
- 35:32Speaker 1: a strong feeling. Nothing else matters.
- 35:46Speaker 2: It's mainly also because, like, we have been saying that, like,
- 35:49Speaker 2: is this guardian Liana? Is she even working? She always
- 35:52Speaker 2: talks about the guardians. The guardians say this. The guardians
- 35:54Speaker 2: say that. But ain't no fucking guardians around her. It's
- 35:56Speaker 2: just her. And only her giving direction. And the only
- 36:01Speaker 2: person you ever see. The only guardian, rather, you ever see.
- 36:04Speaker 2: And I'm just like, is this... did you know, is
- 36:07Speaker 2: this text from Moses and God, or is this from
- 36:10Speaker 2: somebody else? Like, is this your own making? Like it's, I,
- 36:14Speaker 2: everything is suspicious to me specifically when it's just like,
- 36:17Speaker 2: there's only one person giving the, the information, but that one,
- 36:21Speaker 2: there's never backed by like any other piece of proof
- 36:26Speaker 2: or someone is acting like contrary to what you believe
- 36:28Speaker 2: they should be acting. And so that's where that whole
- 36:31Speaker 2: thing came from before, where we were just like, The
- 36:34Speaker 2: fact that even Sinestro even knew everything that was going
- 36:36Speaker 2: on in Hal's life, and this man is supposed to
- 36:39Speaker 2: be behind bars, maybe not the Phantom Zone, but on OWA,
- 36:42Speaker 2: it's just like, how is this happening? Someone is feeding
- 36:45Speaker 2: you the information. Someone's giving it to you. And they
- 36:47Speaker 2: talked a lot about Controlling, people being controllable. Controllable through fear,
- 36:52Speaker 2: controllable through that. You gave a great breakdown, Dr. Dre,
- 36:56Speaker 2: just about how Hal is probably full of fear. So
- 36:59Speaker 2: knowing that he can be controlled by his mentor, someone
- 37:02Speaker 2: he still loves, you know? And what do the guardians want?
- 37:06Speaker 2: They want control over the situation. They get pissed because
- 37:08Speaker 2: you stepped out of order. So why would they not
- 37:11Speaker 2: necessarily be connected? There's your connecting tissue, Ben. He's like,
- 37:18Speaker 2: damn it!
- 37:20Speaker 1: I feel like when I'm talking to my friend who
- 37:22Speaker 1: tells me the world is flat, like, you know, they
- 37:26Speaker 1: have a lot of evidence. So you got to see
- 37:28Speaker 1: that doesn't really.
- 37:30Speaker 2: But one plus one is still two, dude. Like you can't.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Now, him knowing everything is interesting, right?
- 37:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:39Speaker 1: And one, he's not on Oa. He is in space Astroban.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Oh, that's right.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Yeah, a whole other planet. Like, he's literally on a
- 37:46Speaker 1: prison planet. One, we don't see the Guardian this episode, right? Now,
- 37:50Speaker 1: this is my wild conspiracy. You want wild. This is me.
- 37:56Speaker 1: When Guy Gardner is talking to Hal Jordan, and I
- 37:59Speaker 1: definitely want to talk more about Guy's appearance in this episode,
- 38:01Speaker 1: but when Guy is talking to Hal in space, I mean,
- 38:06Speaker 1: not to Hal, to John, in the prison cell, in
- 38:09Speaker 1: the jail cell, he... When he's mentioning about Sinestro, he
- 38:13Speaker 1: taps his ring on the bars. Yes. Right? And that,
- 38:19Speaker 1: to me, felt like a callback or a hint to
- 38:23Speaker 1: them using the ring to get that last 5% and
- 38:27Speaker 1: get a hologram. You know, that's also normally what we
- 38:30Speaker 1: see from that last 5%. Right.
- 38:31Speaker 2: So....
- 38:34Speaker 1: Did Hal use the hologram to free Sinestro? That's my
- 38:42Speaker 1: wild out there.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Does the hologram, can that even like touch things? Is
- 38:46Speaker 2: it like, can it, does it, is it even corporeal?
- 38:49Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm making up the rules as I
- 38:52Speaker 1: go along here. I don't know. I don't think, as
- 38:59Speaker 1: I say it, it sounds like nonsense to me. It
- 39:04Speaker 1: feels way too complex. Like why, you know, when would
- 39:07Speaker 1: he have done that? You know, if I get locked
- 39:09Speaker 1: up for 10 years, go free Sinestro, you know.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Like that's not the first thing on your agenda. Yeah.
- 39:16Speaker 1: And you also don't have the ring again at that point.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Unless it was something he said in motion years ago.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Well, before I get locked up. So just in case
- 39:24Speaker 1: something ever happens to me, you don't hear from me
- 39:26Speaker 1: for like, yeah, go free Sinestro. Yeah.
- 39:30Speaker 3: What I'll give you.
- 39:30Speaker 4: I think that Hal has a Batman style sense of
- 39:37Speaker 4: executive functioning that he comes across as messy and he
- 39:41Speaker 4: comes across as kind of, um, even physically disheveled and
- 39:48Speaker 4: also a little bit out of control and impulsive. And
- 39:54Speaker 4: he'll jump out the car while the car's moving. Like
- 39:58Speaker 4: he gives that aura, but I think this man is
- 40:01Speaker 4: extremely planful and intelligent and is 20 steps ahead of everyone.
- 40:06Speaker 4: Does he have a, so why I said Batman, did
- 40:09Speaker 4: he have this contingency plan or, centering around his death?
- 40:13Speaker 4: Did he have all of this sort of, you know,
- 40:19Speaker 4: unbeknownst to most people if not everyone around him this
- 40:24Speaker 4: plan to free sinestro knowing he wouldn't be alive in
- 40:28Speaker 4: 2020 you know like yes.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I actually sorry as you're saying it i'm saying.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Yes he did it all right like he yes i
- 40:34Speaker 2: could see.
- 40:34Speaker 1: He wrote his own damn eulogy he.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Wrote his own damn eulogy but that's and that's and
- 40:38Speaker 2: again that speaks to like the ego but also to
- 40:41Speaker 2: his foresight and planning What, two, three episodes ago, or
- 40:45Speaker 2: excuse me, way more than that, the beginning of the series,
- 40:47Speaker 2: when we first see the hologram, the hologram already knows
- 40:50Speaker 2: what's up. He's like, oh, if I'm seeing you and
- 40:52Speaker 2: not Hal, something else is going on. We need to
- 40:55Speaker 2: go to Rushville, whatever he said. Like, he knew stuff
- 40:58Speaker 2: was in motion, which is why that does also make sense, Ben,
- 41:00Speaker 2: that maybe.
- 41:02Speaker 1: I don't know. The hologram also, you know, looked down
- 41:07Speaker 1: and said, what? Nah, shit or whatever, you know?
- 41:10Speaker 3: God damn it.
- 41:10Speaker 1: God damn it.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Yeah, but I thought that was just like, oh man,
- 41:13Speaker 2: you know, damn, you died sooner than I thought.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Like, he knew. I don't know. It's just because, and
- 41:19Speaker 2: it's hard because the hologram is imbued with his personality
- 41:22Speaker 2: and that's, that's something that Hal would just say. Like, yes,
- 41:27Speaker 2: the same dude that would have the Batman type reflexes,
- 41:30Speaker 2: Batman timing, is the same dude who would jump out
- 41:32Speaker 2: of a moving car just for shits and giggles.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Like, But it's never just for shits and giggles, you know,
- 41:37Speaker 1: even when he jumped out of a moving car.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 41:39Speaker 4: I think there's always some meaning to it and there's
- 41:42Speaker 4: always something thoughtful, but it appears reckless.
- 41:46Speaker 3: It appears sloppy. It appears impulsive.
- 41:49Speaker 4: And unfortunately for someone like John, like think about John who,
- 41:53Speaker 4: you know, is military trained. this man he's working with
- 41:58Speaker 4: is messy AF. Like this could not be a, you know,
- 42:03Speaker 4: this duo is so poorly paired, but that's why I
- 42:07Speaker 4: feel like there's more to Hal than what we're seeing.
- 42:11Speaker 4: I think there's a complexity there and it's going to
- 42:13Speaker 4: be uncovered. And my understanding is that the hologram is
- 42:18Speaker 4: updated to.
- 42:20Speaker 3: The minute, right?
- 42:21Speaker 4: That the hologram or, you know, that version of Hal
- 42:27Speaker 4: knows every like is uploaded to the last minute of
- 42:30Speaker 4: his life.
- 42:31Speaker 3: I'm guessing.
- 42:32Speaker 2: No, it's a manual action that has to be taken
- 42:35Speaker 2: because back in 2016, when he first discovered the hologram,
- 42:40Speaker 2: he meaning John and first discovered it, the hologram said
- 42:44Speaker 2: I hadn't been updated in 10 years.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Yep.
- 42:47Speaker 3: Oh, OK. It has to be updated.
- 42:50Speaker 1: But he could have easily updated it at any point.
- 42:53Speaker 2: You know, we're back in 2026 now.
- 42:55Speaker 1: So, yeah, we're all the time. He had the ring
- 42:58Speaker 1: after that, like in 2016, at least until he loses
- 43:02Speaker 1: the ring. As far as we know, he can update it.
- 43:05Speaker 1: So the hologram is probably still updated to the last
- 43:08Speaker 1: events of 2016 of to, you know, Zoe dying, et cetera.
- 43:13Speaker 2: And we don't know what time between 2016 and 2026
- 43:16Speaker 2: that Hal got put in jail. So he could have
- 43:22Speaker 2: had time to prepare. It's not like Rushville happened and
- 43:27Speaker 2: the next day they carted him off to the pen.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Some time could have passed.
- 43:33Speaker 1: So who freed Sinestro is still the question.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Who else can go into outer space besides another Lantern?
- 43:41Speaker 1: Or the Guardians.
- 43:42Speaker 3: Or the Guardians.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:45Speaker 1: I think the Sinestro one is like... No, I think
- 43:48Speaker 1: the Sinestro one is just like, you know, it's very much...
- 43:52Speaker 1: There's only two choices. The hologram or the Guardian. Because
- 43:55Speaker 1: I'll also say the Guardian. I have no motive for
- 43:58Speaker 1: the Guardian freeing Sinestro because this is why I feel
- 44:01Speaker 1: like Sinestro is locked up. And this is what why
- 44:05Speaker 1: I feel how, or the hologram, because I feel Sinestro's
- 44:09Speaker 1: locked up because Sinestro found out what happened with the
- 44:11Speaker 1: Manhunters or the fact that the Manhunters were created by
- 44:15Speaker 1: the guardians. And so then Sinestro confronts the man, I mean,
- 44:19Speaker 1: the guardians about it and they're like, yeah, whatever. And
- 44:22Speaker 1: he rebels, kills one of them and gets locked up.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:26Speaker 1: And so Hal is sympathetic to it because when Hal,
- 44:29Speaker 1: Sinestro informs him of this, Of course, Hal, to be sympathetic,
- 44:32Speaker 1: he might not be to the extent where he wants
- 44:34Speaker 1: to rebel and take down the Guardians, but I think
- 44:38Speaker 1: he's still sympathetic to his, you know.
- 44:40Speaker 2: His mentor.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:42Speaker 1: And to the idea that the Guardians ain't shit, which
- 44:44Speaker 1: he's already expressed because he knows that they created the
- 44:49Speaker 1: Manhunters and kind of just swept it under the rug
- 44:52Speaker 1: when it was all said and done.
- 44:55Speaker 2: What did you have to say about Guy? Because you
- 44:56Speaker 2: said you wanted to mention something.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Other than he's the greatest ever and, you know, it
- 45:00Speaker 1: was amazing to see him in this episode.
- 45:02Speaker 5: Shout out to Nate Fillion.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Nate Fillion is a hell of an actor.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Hell of an actor. I was happy to... I'm not happy,
- 45:10Speaker 1: I'll say, but I thought the scene with Guy was
- 45:12Speaker 1: to be a lot more sad. Why would Guy be sad?
- 45:16Speaker 1: Because Guy can be sad, you know, as a character.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Yeah but you've seen it already in superman in the
- 45:23Speaker 2: movie so why would that and that's the same version
- 45:25Speaker 2: we're seeing now so why would he be sad and.
- 45:28Speaker 1: I did like that it was the same version but
- 45:31Speaker 1: like translated into this lantern's verse and i thought that
- 45:35Speaker 1: you know was really well done where he was still
- 45:37Speaker 1: the same jerk the same super willful dude but also
- 45:41Speaker 1: the good dude and that's what i love about guy
- 45:44Speaker 1: you know like underneath it all he's The thug with
- 45:47Speaker 1: the heart of gold. You know what I mean? He's
- 45:49Speaker 1: the guy who acts like a jerk. The athletic director. Yes.
- 45:52Speaker 1: He's a gym teacher. You know, he's a tough gym
- 45:54Speaker 1: teacher who loves all his kids, you know, and will
- 45:57Speaker 1: do anything for them. And that's what I love about Guy.
- 46:01Speaker 1: And I love that he does it. And Guy plots
- 46:04Speaker 1: it immediately. You know, he's like, dog, don't act like
- 46:07Speaker 1: you're trying to get this ring. And then he goes
- 46:09Speaker 1: and gets the ring for him. You know, like he
- 46:11Speaker 1: knows what he's going to do.
- 46:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Especially because Guy is also a dude who loves to
- 46:15Speaker 1: break the rules. So, you know, I think, especially when
- 46:19Speaker 1: Jon challenges him on it, that really inspires Guy. But
- 46:24Speaker 1: going back to Guy, what does he... I don't think
- 46:27Speaker 1: he knows anything about who freaks in Estro, though.
- 46:30Speaker 2: I don't think Guy's part of that plot over there. No.
- 46:34Speaker 4: No. I think he's intentionally kept distanced from this drama.
- 46:40Speaker 4: And he even said, you know, I'm here for impression management.
- 46:44Speaker 4: I'm here to fix... the reputation of the of the
- 46:48Speaker 4: human lanterns and so this is this is what drives
- 46:53Speaker 4: my decisions um you know and not for nothing you
- 46:57Speaker 4: know at first glance for me at least uh i
- 47:01Speaker 4: wondered how they would shape this character and i thought
- 47:03Speaker 4: gosh like at first he feels to me like like
- 47:06Speaker 4: um a John Walker, Captain America, uh, like, who are
- 47:13Speaker 4: you really doing this for? Do you really, do you
- 47:15Speaker 4: really believe like, or are you in this for the
- 47:19Speaker 4: glory and the title? And at some point I think
- 47:24Speaker 4: for him, it's, it's a simple set of values. I
- 47:28Speaker 4: think he is quite loyal. Um, I think he's, he's
- 47:34Speaker 4: sort of, Maybe he's not as simple as you might
- 47:38Speaker 4: think he is in that he has a depth to
- 47:41Speaker 4: his morality and he actually will help John out. But
- 47:46Speaker 4: as far as him having any real....
- 47:50Speaker 3: Role here in like the bigger story. I don't know.
- 47:54Speaker 4: I think, I think the MacGuffin is the ring and
- 47:57Speaker 4: he helped get him the ring and that's end of,
- 48:00Speaker 4: end of it for Guy.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so too.
- 48:02Speaker 2: More of a cameo than anything else.
- 48:04Speaker 3: Right. I think so.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so. I think that's pretty much it
- 48:07Speaker 1: for Guy. I wasn't hoping for more than that, but
- 48:10Speaker 1: like I said, we already seen that guy in the
- 48:12Speaker 1: Superman film because in Superman, He stands up to Superman,
- 48:16Speaker 1: but he also doesn't believe that Superman is this, you know,
- 48:19Speaker 1: alien monster that Lex is trying to paint him as.
- 48:23Speaker 1: And he stands up for his friend and then, you know,
- 48:25Speaker 1: eventually goes over to the country and does what he
- 48:27Speaker 1: has to do. So, no, I loved it. I thought
- 48:31Speaker 1: it was a great continuation and a great expansion of
- 48:33Speaker 1: the universe that they're building with these lanterns. And it just, again,
- 48:38Speaker 1: I'm hoping Hal's not dead because I want to see more.
- 48:42Speaker 1: And then... I did love one thing. I saw somebody
- 48:45Speaker 1: point this out. Like, Guy is selling a drink that's
- 48:47Speaker 1: like pow or something. It's like a power drink. Yeah.
- 48:51Speaker 1: And it's like, you know, boom, pow, repeat or something.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Oh, like in the comics?
- 48:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, also, Guy is one of his famous moments
- 48:59Speaker 1: is getting punched out by Batman. Like, that is one
- 49:02Speaker 1: of his most famous moments from the comics of all
- 49:05Speaker 1: time is Batman one punching this dude into unconsciousness. Yeah.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Can I add to your conspiracy?
- 49:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 49:13Speaker 4: Fellow real Hal Jordan truther.
- 49:17Speaker 3: I feel like.
- 49:20Speaker 4: What we know to be true is that the Manhunters
- 49:24Speaker 4: can take humans and essentially revive them.
- 49:29Speaker 1: Yes.
- 49:30Speaker 3: Was John not fully reskinned? He was fully reskinned.
- 49:36Speaker 1: And she said, you want me to make you darker?
- 49:40Speaker 1: I can do whatever you want.
- 49:42Speaker 3: To a customization of how do you want your next
- 49:47Speaker 3: body to look like.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Remember, she looked like whatever Anton looked like.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Anton and them?
- 49:54Speaker 1: Yeah. How did Anton get to look human? There's another question. Remember,
- 50:02Speaker 1: before you finish, there's another one. John already and Hal
- 50:06Speaker 1: mentioned there are How many aliens that can adapt and
- 50:09Speaker 1: look like humans without... Thousands. Yes. Correct.
- 50:13Speaker 3: Correct.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 50:14Speaker 4: And then did John not say, why did you take
- 50:16Speaker 4: part of... Like, he sees some kind of.
- 50:20Speaker 4: Some kind of like an injury or, or sample taken
- 50:24Speaker 4: from his skin.
- 50:25Speaker 3: And, and they said, Oh, that's what we needed to.
- 50:28Speaker 2: Oh yeah. The little circle that was on John's arm.
- 50:30Speaker 2: It was like right near his armpit or something like that.
- 50:32Speaker 2: And he's, he was looking at it and she, and
- 50:34Speaker 2: to your point, Zoe said, yeah, Oh, we needed that to,
- 50:37Speaker 2: in order to rebuild you. So it was like, you
- 50:38Speaker 2: got your DNA and everything else.
- 50:40Speaker 3: So is it not possible that they could have gotten
- 50:43Speaker 3: Hal's DNA?
- 50:44Speaker 1: Yes.
- 50:44Speaker 3: Replicated him at any point.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Or, or how could have replicated them.
- 50:49Speaker 3: So at any point, With the technology of the Manhunters.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Remember, Hal's been in this town. Why would Hal come
- 50:55Speaker 1: back to the town? You know, oh, she came back
- 50:57Speaker 1: for me. Yeah, right. You know, I mean, sure, Hal,
- 51:00Speaker 1: you know, the bumbling idiot comes back for the sheriff. No,
- 51:03Speaker 1: he's also there for other reasons.
- 51:04Speaker 2: I don't even know what that meant when she said
- 51:05Speaker 2: that he came back for me. Came back for you
- 51:07Speaker 2: in what capacity?
- 51:08Speaker 1: In that he loved her.
- 51:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 51:14Speaker 3: You don't believe it?
- 51:14Speaker 1: I believe it, but I also believe that Hal wouldn't
- 51:18Speaker 1: just come back to this town for no reason.
- 51:20Speaker 2: I know he liked her.
- 51:21Speaker 1: I mean, he was... And just to make amends.
- 51:23Speaker 2: He was basically flirting with her when they had the
- 51:25Speaker 2: town hall meet in it, and she said, honey.
- 51:28Speaker 1: Oh, he was... Yeah, he was on it.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Yeah, Ben liked her, but love?
- 51:33Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like the love can grow, whatever,
- 51:35Speaker 1: but I feel like he came there for other reasons.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Besides just wanting to, absolutely, like, no offense, Sheriff Kane,
- 51:43Speaker 2: but I mean, I don't know about that.
- 51:45Speaker 1: There was still a thought to the mystery, and he
- 51:46Speaker 1: knew that.
- 51:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:48Speaker 3: What would bring him back to this small town in Nebraska?
- 51:51Speaker 4: Which is one of the first things I asked when
- 51:52Speaker 4: I was watching this episode is, like, why this town?
- 51:57Speaker 4: Why come back here, especially knowing everyone's going to hate you?
- 52:02Speaker 2: I mean, the way they played it was him making
- 52:04Speaker 2: amends to everyone and everything that he hurt during the
- 52:08Speaker 2: 2016 incident. And they made it a point during that
- 52:12Speaker 2: incident for you to see his horrified reactions to everything
- 52:17Speaker 2: happening around him. Go ahead, Ben, what you want to say?
- 52:19Speaker 1: No, let's say it like this. He did get locked
- 52:21Speaker 1: up reasonably quickly after. Maybe the cops arrested him right
- 52:26Speaker 1: there on the spot, right? He goes to jail, sits
- 52:29Speaker 1: in jail until trial, boom, goes to prison. Does five, six,
- 52:33Speaker 1: seven years. Gets out. I wonder. Ten years. No, but
- 52:40Speaker 1: I don't think he did a whole ten. He didn't
- 52:42Speaker 1: do a whole bid. Either way. Either way, he did
- 52:44Speaker 1: his time. Comes home. When he left the scene, if
- 52:48Speaker 1: he gets arrested immediately, there's a lot of stuff undone
- 52:52Speaker 1: in that town. A lot of stuff got blown up,
- 52:55Speaker 1: but a lot of Zoe and Macon's infrastructure was still there.
- 53:01Speaker 1: And he would know that.
- 53:02Speaker 2: Maybe, maybe.
- 53:03Speaker 1: So why would he, you know, he wouldn't just leave
- 53:06Speaker 1: that untouched. Yeah.
- 53:07Speaker 2: I also think several things can be true at the
- 53:09Speaker 2: same time. Because, like, what you're saying and also the
- 53:12Speaker 2: fact that, like, from a humanistic perspective, what I was mentioning,
- 53:15Speaker 2: just the fact that he was legitimately, like, at what
- 53:19Speaker 2: was happening around him about people getting blown to smithereens
- 53:22Speaker 2: all around him, like kids, women, children, everything was going crazy.
- 53:26Speaker 2: You saw the orbital strike that happened around him. He
- 53:29Speaker 2: even tried to save a piece of the town when
- 53:31Speaker 2: he did that big partial dome thing um, from striking
- 53:35Speaker 2: the people, like he, it was almost like he couldn't
- 53:37Speaker 2: believe that this was happening and that he was essentially
- 53:40Speaker 2: to blame for it. So it was happening in front
- 53:42Speaker 2: of him in real time. I don't know how many
- 53:44Speaker 2: times something like that has even come across to him
- 53:46Speaker 2: or the fact that all his life, he's been this
- 53:49Speaker 2: revered hero. And now that you're the complete opposite. And
- 53:54Speaker 2: I think it's one of the things that he was
- 53:55Speaker 2: battling against. And again, trying to again many things could
- 53:59Speaker 2: be true at the same time trying to make amends
- 54:00Speaker 2: for like i think that's for real that he was
- 54:03Speaker 2: trying to make amends i do think that he wasn't
- 54:05Speaker 2: that wasn't just plot like for him to do something
- 54:08Speaker 2: else yes he was doing something else and i also
- 54:11Speaker 2: think that he really did feel a way about what
- 54:14Speaker 2: he did to those people or or how his actions
- 54:16Speaker 2: contributed because he didn't call the strikes but his actions
- 54:19Speaker 2: contributed to making all that right be put in motion
- 54:21Speaker 2: so um I do think he really did legitimately feel
- 54:26Speaker 2: a way and feel, but feel bad and feel remorse.
- 54:31Speaker 1: What about Maggie?
- 54:33Speaker 3: Who Maggie?
- 54:35Speaker 2: Maggie is Ruth from Ozark. That's what she is.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Okay.
- 54:40Speaker 4: Oh, reparations lady. The lady that wants reparations. Once she
- 54:45Speaker 4: said she needed, when she said reparations, I was thinking.
- 54:49Speaker 2: Before you get into that, y'all all know who she is, right? No.
- 54:53Speaker 2: She's the little girl that John handed.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Oh, you mean on this show?
- 54:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 54:57Speaker 1: I thought you said from Ozark.
- 54:58Speaker 2: No, in this show. Yeah, I know. The little girl
- 55:01Speaker 2: that John handed the watch to when she said sorry
- 55:04Speaker 2: about her daddy getting blown to smithereens. Like, you know,
- 55:08Speaker 2: sorry he was supposed to do something for her, but yeah.
- 55:10Speaker 1: Oh, he gave her a watch then?
- 55:12Speaker 2: So when John, after John, was it before or after
- 55:16Speaker 2: John got the ring and all that, and John was
- 55:17Speaker 2: walking through the debris, and he walked past the little girl,
- 55:20Speaker 2: and the girl's crying, the mother was screaming over the,
- 55:23Speaker 2: presumably the father's body, the dead body, and then he
- 55:27Speaker 2: saw the watch on the ground and picked it up
- 55:28Speaker 2: and gave it to the girl.
- 55:29Speaker 1: Oh, that's right, because it was the daddy's watch.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Right, which is also, he constructed a watch when he
- 55:34Speaker 2: was doing the test with the guardians, like everything else connected, so... Um,
- 55:39Speaker 2: but the fact that that's what, that's who that girl
- 55:41Speaker 2: is grown up now, I guess she's 19 or something
- 55:43Speaker 2: like that. So, um, what about her? She wants $ 312, 000. Uh,
- 55:52Speaker 2: why they introduced this character. They didn't introduce, but why
- 55:55Speaker 2: they came back to this character here. And now I
- 55:58Speaker 2: guess it's important to know, but.
- 56:00Speaker 1: People like, yeah, go ahead. What? Is this going to
- 56:05Speaker 1: be a giant waste of time, is the question. I
- 56:08Speaker 1: hope not, you know?
- 56:10Speaker 2: I mean, they introduced the girl last episode as a child. Now,
- 56:14Speaker 2: fast forward 10 years later, here she is wanting her
- 56:17Speaker 2: monetary revenge. And now we got two more episodes left.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:21Speaker 2: And she said a very specific number for a very
- 56:23Speaker 2: specific reason.
- 56:24Speaker 1: Because her threatening to tell... whatever she knows to the
- 56:29Speaker 1: sheriff is not a threat to me. I'd be like,
- 56:31Speaker 1: do it then shorty. Like what?
- 56:32Speaker 2: You know, like, but John is acting like it is.
- 56:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:36Speaker 2: And I, his reaction was acting like it was.
- 56:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Cause I would, you know, if I was John,
- 56:40Speaker 1: I'd be like, do it. You know what? Okay.
- 56:43Speaker 2: Tell her that I was here and that I punched
- 56:45Speaker 2: him in the face.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:47Speaker 2: And I just feel like it doesn't, to me, it
- 56:49Speaker 2: doesn't really implicate John anymore than he already is.
- 56:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:53Speaker 2: I don't think, like, I know, I feel it, that
- 56:56Speaker 2: Carrie doesn't think John had anything to do with Hal's
- 56:58Speaker 2: death or presumed death.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Especially because she probably shot him.
- 57:02Speaker 2: Right, so why would Ruth from Ozark saying this matter?
- 57:05Speaker 1: Like, I don't... What is the Ruth from Ozark?
- 57:08Speaker 2: Watch Ozark and I'll know what y'all talking about.
- 57:10Speaker 1: She looks.
- 57:11Speaker 3: No, I see it.
- 57:12Speaker 2: I see it.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 57:13Speaker 3: I can see it.
- 57:14Speaker 2: It's just the hair.
- 57:14Speaker 1: Crazy in hair and wild out? Not crazy, just the hair. Well,
- 57:18Speaker 1: this one does. Maggie looked like an evil version of
- 57:21Speaker 1: somebody from Greece to me.
- 57:23Speaker 5: Like an evil grecian but okay no i mean greece
- 57:31Speaker 5: like the the john travolta.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Yeah the musical yeah she looked like a brother from
- 57:37Speaker 1: greece oh my god yeah not that greece oh i
- 57:39Speaker 1: get it yeah yeah yeah okay no john travolta greece
- 57:42Speaker 1: yeah okay.
- 57:43Speaker 2: Not ramen hair greece okay got it.
- 57:44Speaker 1: No i mean but both though for real though because
- 57:46Speaker 1: she doesn't like you know she could be in the
- 57:48Speaker 1: trojan war too.
- 57:51Speaker 3: I'm not sure about her.
- 57:52Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm sorry.
- 57:54Speaker 1: You put that centurion armor on us, Shorty.
- 57:58Speaker 2: We diverged so bad away from the main point. I'm sorry. No, no.
- 58:04Speaker 3: I don't know her purpose.
- 58:05Speaker 2: I don't know her purpose.
- 58:08Speaker 4: I feel like, if anything, it's almost as if all
- 58:12Speaker 4: these forces are working against Jon. Like, he feels the
- 58:15Speaker 4: burdensomeness of so many people you know, wanting something from him.
- 58:22Speaker 4: And now you introduce, it's almost like, it's like whether
- 58:27Speaker 4: this character is going to be a big deal or not.
- 58:30Speaker 4: I think it's a part of this collective idea that like, yeah,
- 58:34Speaker 4: now there's someone else who wants something from you.
- 58:36Speaker 2: And now, yeah.
- 58:38Speaker 4: Great.
- 58:38Speaker 2: Jesus.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 2: But you know, also they made it a point for
- 58:42Speaker 2: that character to say when, when John was like.
- 58:45Speaker 3: That, I don't think that was a mistake.
- 58:48Speaker 4: And I think, as an aside, I think this episode,
- 58:53Speaker 4: I know it was written long before the netizens' discourse.
- 59:02Speaker 3: Around intentions in this show. But it's almost as if.
- 59:05Speaker 4: And I remember, I don't know if it was one
- 59:07Speaker 4: of the podcasts after the show, but someone had said.
- 59:10Speaker 3: this was, uh, episode three was meant to be episode five.
- 59:13Speaker 5: Yep.
- 59:13Speaker 4: Um, and how, how this is how things landed, but
- 59:17Speaker 4: I don't think it's a mistake that some things in
- 59:20Speaker 4: this episode are said in so directly and clearly. Like
- 59:25Speaker 4: John saying, no, I didn't ask the sheriff for help
- 59:28Speaker 4: because I'm a Black man in Nebraska.
- 59:30Speaker 2: That's what I was getting at.
- 59:31Speaker 3: That wasn't a mistake.
- 59:33Speaker 2: That wasn't a mistake and that's what I was getting at.
- 59:35Speaker 2: She said the reparations piece. He said that piece about
- 59:37Speaker 2: being a Black man in Nebraska and she made it,
- 59:40Speaker 2: they were intentional for her to say, we're not racist here.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but after he's the only Black man to get
- 59:46Speaker 1: arrested when all those dudes, you know, were in the fight.
- 59:52Speaker 1: We only see John in the cell.
- 59:53Speaker 2: It just looked similar to when he was after Rushville
- 59:56Speaker 2: got blown the fuck up and he was surrounded by
- 59:58Speaker 2: all of those white men. Here we go again. What
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: you doing here, boy? What you doing here, boy? Energy again.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: So I had Dawn of the Dead, the original Dawn
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: of the Dead, when the black man saves everyone only
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: to be shot by the white guys. Yeah.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Now, granted, they were just mad that he turned on
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: the nightlight, but that's neither here nor there. It's just like,
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: why are they intentionally adding this coded language in here
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: for it? It's not for no reason.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Now, you said something, Dre, about the netizens' discussion around intention? Yeah.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Around the show.
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: I think some.
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: I will say, I think there are some problems with
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: media literacy in general that some people are looking at
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: a character and having a hard time separating the character
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: from the writer and or developers of this story.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: Down to the references, whether we're talking a spectrum of
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: coded references to very direct statements that all of us
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: are going to interpret and read these episodes slightly differently.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: Having said that, also the writers have come out and
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: named what their intentions were, especially with Hal and John
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: not being on the same page, not getting along, having
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: very different experiences and their origins with having access to
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: the ring.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: So, yeah, when I said.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: The discourse or the netizens, I'm referring to a huge
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: misunderstanding and in some cases an inability to separate beloved
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: character representations or character versions from writers' acknowledgement and awareness
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: of what they're doing with that character.
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: And also that we talked about this with Vanessa, like
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: because of and this is two things, just the media
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: literacy lack and the binge model where everyone can get
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: everything at once. And so they see the entire arc
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: of a character. People not understanding that John and pretty
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: much every character on the show is on various arcs
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: of their own. And so we're not seeing the fully
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: developed John. And even though in this episode, we're seeing
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: a much more developed John. And now you're seeing a
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: dude who's cursing, drinking, eating meat. And a lot of
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: it even felt a bit performative even there for me,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: where John is like putting on this show because he
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: just curses a lot. And it's like it was like
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: me in middle school when I first learned about cursing.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: And every sentence, you know, just had to have that.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: I mean, I was trying to string together as many
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: as possible, you know. And that's how it felt with John. And,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: you know, he immediately takes a drink, you know. He's
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: got all the accoutrements of, you know, it's like, I've
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: got all this thing of, like you were talking about earlier, Dre,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: of success. You know, I got the nice apartment. I
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: come home. I got the drink. You know, I got
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: the watch. I got the Denali. Kidded out. But it's
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: all these things that are like, they're not really what
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: he wants. And like his own brother tells him, you know,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: you're still back in Rushville. And I feel like Hal,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: that's just going back to Hal. Like, I feel like
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: both of them. They're both stuck in business there.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: And Hal is just more direct about it and went
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: to Rushville to try and solve it while John tried
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: to move on from it. But he knows that, you know,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: the business isn't finished.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: But what is so special about Rushville? Just the stuff
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: that happened there?
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: I struggled with this so much when Marcus, I really
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: want to ask you what you think of Marcus, because
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: when Marcus has him on the phone and he's saying.
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: Come home, this is a big deal.
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: I can't, I wanted to scream at John, like, let
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: the drama, like, let it go, go home, help your
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: brother start this, you know, like make this deal.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: Do your thing. Thrive.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: Like, let this BS go. And I was almost yelling
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: at him, like, just stop.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: Just just.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: But how can he let go wanting to be Green Lantern?
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: I don't think he will ever let that go. That's
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: why I also think that it's like, he, he said
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: that he didn't want it, but it's like, ah, but you,
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: you're still, and his brother already said, said the same thing.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Like you, you've been in rush for 10 years.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: You've been in rush for 10 years. You guys still
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: call me chosen. Like, I feel like John almost doesn't
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: have his own identity still. Like he's still this guy
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: that everyone else wants him to be. And he's still
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: struggling with that. And like, Again, I'm still trying to
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: determine what specifically about Rushville, maybe just that incident, but
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: like why is it tethered to that place?
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: I remember this is where Abin Sur crashed, right? Right
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: outside of Rushville. So that is the origin point of
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: all of them, pretty much. Of Earth, Green Lanterns, of
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: all three of them, it comes from Rushville. It comes
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: from Abin Sur crashing there. Also, the Manhunter, the last
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: of the Manhunters. And the whole, you know, she says
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: she cares. Okay, so Abbotser was killed. But when did Sinestro,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: you know, how does Sinestro know or what does Sinestro know? And,
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: you know, that mystery comes from Rushville. So everything is
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: tied back to Rushville. And Hal and John both know,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: especially Hal, Remember, there's still the whole room with a
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: black portal in it, like, that a cow came out of.
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: Room with a black portal, the storage of solitude.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: With the whole vault. There's a lot of things still,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: but even, like, left at the ranch, you know, before
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: it gets completely demolished or whatever. Left at the ranch. Yeah,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: there's a lot of things there, so... There's.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: Also Earl, and he has to feed Earl.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: So there's that.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: That was an excuse of Earl, but I did feel
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: bad for Earl. That's the one character that I just
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: felt completely, utterly terrible for.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: Like, Earl didn't ask for this.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: Same. Earl just wanted his beef and bison. That's all
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: Earl wanted. Did y'all peep the sign that was in
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Hal's house?
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: Live, laugh, repeat. Live, laugh, love.
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: The sign actually said, Yesterday is already a dream, and
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: tomorrow is only a vision. But today, well-lived, makes every
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: of hope.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Definitely some shit a man who came home from doing
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: time would have. let me tell you right right or.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: Like the joke you made before is a live laugh
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: love sign you know that.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: You got he had that sign too he had a
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: live laugh love sign.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Right yes yeah but like again it's just more towards
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: Hal's reformation I guess from everything he had been through
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: and been in jail and all the other stuff that
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: he would have even because I don't even seem like
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: the type that would have this type of sign.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: No not at all unless there are different versions of
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: Hal which is.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: Which there are. The hologram was, at the time anyway,
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: a 10-year-old version of him from 10 years before.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: And the how we haven't really seen is the how
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: he came home from prison. So that's trying to be
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: a different how.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: But this is also the how that has a firearm.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Pointed at the door.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: So it still has, despite.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: These statements, he can't help but fight.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: What he's living with, whether it's paranoia, resentment, um, or,
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: or just real protection.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: There's just, it's not paranoia because like one thing I
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: noticed is house gate is smashed in.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Like there's a such in a house date where it's
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: been knocked over. Like the whole gate is in disrepair,
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: but there was such an event where it looked like
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: somebody drove a car in or something.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: This town really hates him.
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: So it could just be just real.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: Like he's got to have some form of, of self-protection.
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: Yeah, it's such an interesting, something is drawing them back
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: to this place. And I don't think that it's flimsy
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: or there's, I think there's reason for it. I think
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: a lot of this is going to start to unfold.
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: This is the beginning of the second half. you know,
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: the back half of, of the series of the first season.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: So I think we're going to be introduced to more
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: people and maybe even that list of suspects is going
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: to get longer when we realize we're working with the
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: data from 10 years ago, what's been going on more
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: recently and how's, how's that, you know, what certainly what's
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: in the vault, but how are all these things that
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: we're discovering going to change the course of, um, John's pathway, especially.
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: But it's not working out for him. I mean, it's
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: almost as if he can't help himself. He can't help
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: but fail other people. And so what is that for?
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: So now, truth be told, you're failing everybody.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: What are you doing?
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: How are you going to get back on track? I
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: think we're meant to see his fall. This is him
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: really reaching a darkness. And what is he going to do?
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: You know, Ben, I mean, to your point, if this
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: really is about overcoming fear and adversity and finding the willpower...
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: to move forward in unimaginable situations, maybe this is his time.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: His time to find that?
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: Yeah, his time to discover that that's always in him
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: and that's what makes him right for the ring. Because
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: I think even though we hate the fact that the
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: ring can, well, we hate the fact that the ring
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: can be a contributor to corruption and to someone's path
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: to some level of darkness.
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: I think a lot of us are still rooting for him.
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: I think some of us really want him to have
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: that opportunity again and be able to sort of demonstrate
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: that he deserves to have the ring.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: I mean, I like that you said that because it's
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: two sides to that. Like the first, the idea of like,
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: From the beginning, I've always felt he, quote, deserves the
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: ring because he's worked hard enough for it. He's been
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: put in this position where it's like he had no childhood.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: He has nothing. Like, this is your path. This is
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: everything that you've done in your life is about you
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: being the ring bearer.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: And.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: That's why there was a lot of pushback from online
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: when we were, well, some of us, I don't know,
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: I was to a degree, was mad that he didn't
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: just take the ring, that he didn't just snatch it
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: from homeboy. Because on the one end, it's just like,
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: just take that shit. That's rightfully yours. But on the
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: other hand, it's like that's beneath him because he is
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: already deserving of it. So that is one piece. But
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: then also, to the other point you're making, I do
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: want to see him just be Jon Stewart. The Green
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: Lantern Jon Stewart, right? I do feel like after everything
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: that's been done, let's put the bullshit away. I want
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: him to bear the ring. I want him to be
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: that mantle. I want to see how he would really...
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: express what it means to be a Green Lantern in
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: his own way after everything that he's been through like
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: that would be a nice cathartic moment to see that
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: like he finally eventually becomes who he is for himself
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: and he is able to have the ring and do
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: what he can with that that would be.
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: Amazing exactly and prove that point that you can still
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: be authentic in in who you are 10 toes down
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: and still wear the ring and make that work because
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: I think what we're seeing is that it doesn't always
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: work for everyone that it's, there's always some kind of
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: misalignment or discord or, or a moral injury. Everyone seems
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: to have this moral injury when they're attached to the ring.
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: Can he make it work? That I honestly think if anyone,
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: it would be him. But he's been, but that right
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: has been that privilege, you know, keeps getting stripped from him.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: And I, I think even this idea of like, his
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: literal like body has been stripped from him. Like he has,
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: he's been put through it all. He's been left to die.
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: He's been you know re talk about jesus like he's
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: been reincarnated he's come out the other side now like
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: there's there's just i think so much messaging around him
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: being the right one the chosen one yeah and even
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: me now i'm falling for this like the lore of
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: gosh if it's anyone it's gotta be him he's our
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: space jesus.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: He was baptized by fire space jesus cop like yeah
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: we get it like And that's why it's kind of
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: just like, okay, just, you know, just give it to
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: us at the end at this point. And also, they
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: gave you even a slight misdirection, too. Like, when he
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: started digging up the body, I was like, I knew it.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: He wanted that fucking ring. But it's never just that, right? Like,
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: the motive was because he's smart. So he knows there's
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: more to it, that he needs that ring to find
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: out more information about what exactly happened to Hal. So
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: I did like that they even did that because it
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: was almost close to, like... when you thought he was
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: going to take the ring from Hal, like, you know,
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: in the tunnel. And then he ended up not doing it,
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: you know? Like, it's just, he had all this opportunity
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: to do it in a dark way, but didn't. And
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: that's just true to his, I guess, the core of
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: who he is and his being. I think that was good.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: No, because that's like what we've talked about and discussed
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: is that he has been trained to be Space Jesus' cop.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: And that's what he has to get away from. He
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: has to find his own path to becoming a lantern
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: and not the one that Hal was on. Cause Hal
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps for the
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: most part are just police. And John has to become
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: a true hero. And that has to be someone who
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: stands up for himself. And one thing I really liked
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: in this episode on that note is that we see
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: that even when he's not a lantern, his goal is
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: to save people. Like he's like, yo, I'm going to
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: build an arc. And it's also interesting because we see
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: him building an arc and then he meets Noah. You know,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: as a grown man. Symbolism. Yeah. And also Noah wanting
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: to leave and get away from everything, you know, kind
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: of from responsibility where John is running to more responsibility,
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: even without being on a lantern. So, you know, it's
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: those two, I guess, opposite sides of a coin or
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: I'm not sure, you know, like George Lucas says, it
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: all rhymes, whatever. Yeah.
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: It's poetry.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it's poetry.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: I had said it, but I didn't know that's also
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: what you meant, the fact that his name was Noah.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: The Noah in the Ark and all that stuff.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Noah in the Ark, yeah.
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: The only last point that I wanted to mention is,
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: and Dr. J, maybe you can answer this, Ben, you
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: can answer this from DC reading, but, like, who is
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: Carol Ferris?
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Oh, Carol Ferris is Cal's long love. Like, that's, like,
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: Tony Stark and Pepper Potts.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Peter Parker and MJ. You know... that's that level yeah
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: she eventually becomes a star sapphire right.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: Yeah okay yeah star sapphire the.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: Powers of her own love hate relationship all kind of
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: craziness goes on with her but yeah carol ferris goes
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: back with hal jordan you know that is and the
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: original story is that she works at like the place
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: where he gets a job after he becomes greenlander like
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: uh he's he still works as a test pilot and
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: she works at the Ferris airlines. It's like, it's her
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: parents' company or something like that.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: I remember.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: It's fitting that she's the one who has his eulogy
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: because he had, and I think, I think if there's
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: anything that has veracity, it's this part that he would
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: have wanted her to have that, um, like for real, if,
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: if he were to die and that he wanted her,
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: her to read it. So, um, I also think that
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: the words that he wrote were not meant to be exaggerated,
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: that I think he truly felt like at the time
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: that he wrote it, he was going to have the
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: kind of ceremony that included world leaders and the president
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: and community members and everyone mourning him and the juxtaposition
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: of the inflated letter and then three people at.
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: His funeral is really....
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: Carol's not even there for the body going in the ground.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: She out.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: She did leave. He thought the whole intergalactic community was
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: out for him, you know, to celebrate him.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: And the hilarious and sad thing is in the comics
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: for how Jordan does die, that is his funeral. It's
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: attended by all of the Justice League. No, by everyone. By,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: you know, all the luminaries, everything.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: So, you know, that's because in the comics, you know,
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: he dawned out, you know, he was still Hal Jordan.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: So, yeah, it's I mean, it's also a testament to
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: how you treat other people and, you know, how you
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: going to who going to show up to your funeral
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: type shit.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: Like I always say, man, you know, you live a
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: good life and people won't talk about you bad when
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: you're dead. I do not believe in that. Well, respect
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: the dead. And I'm like, no, they should have respected life.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: You know, at least he was himself in his eulogy. Like,
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: you know, the whole thing about the whole thing about
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: you know whether you're a woman or a man but
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: statistically you'll probably be a man.
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: Like oh I love that part so good so good.
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: I was like that's real yeah that's very real and
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: like and in.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: The ending I hope I mattered you know that was
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: that was because it's like as he's writing it you
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: know his humanity is coming more and more out and
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: in the end you know he knows like he's saying
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: all this big stuff you know all these people will
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: be here But in the end, he's also just hoping
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: that anyone will be there.
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: I think speaking of poetry, for real though, how important
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: it is that John is reading this. Because in a way,
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: it's almost a letter to John saying, don't be like me.
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: And we've been talking about John is searching for purpose.
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: He's searching for.
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: Mattering.
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: He's searching for belonging. These are all the things that
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: humans care about that the guardians don't understand. What makes
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: a human want to live? And fundamentally, it's mattering, belongingness,
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: purpose is what we all want. And John is struggling
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: with this. He doesn't have these things. He doesn't know
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: how to get them. And everyone is telling him, oh,
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: this is what you have to do, or this is
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: what you have to do, you.
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: Know, for this authority. Or this is what you have
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: to do for this order.
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: Or, you know, family, you know, you've got family members
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: calling him left and right, leaving messages. You know, this
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: is what you need to do out of obligation. And
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: yet this man has never been taught, you know, how's
- 1:19:08Speaker 4: actually teaching him. mattering belongingness purpose. This is, this is
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: really truly as human to human, you know, ring bear
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: to ring bear lantern to lantern, human to human.
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: This is really what it's about.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: I like that. That's such a great ending.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: A couple other things I did want to point out.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: This episode was directed by Stephen Williams and I felt
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: like it was some of the best direction people have
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: been complaining. And I noticed this in the, after the credits,
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: that a lot of the outdoor shots are shot with
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: blue screen. And so you get a lot of these
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: fuzzy backgrounds to cover up the blue screen.
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: Of it all.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: So I did feel that. But I also loved, like,
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: the shot of John driving back to Rushville and how
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: you see, you know, night turn to day and night.
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: That was really beautiful. And just in general, I thought
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: this episode was really well directed and really well shot.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: But also... This is the first episode where I really,
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: really noticed it. So I want to give a shout
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: out to Stephanie Economu, who does the score for Lanterns.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: And in this episode was just, oh man, that store
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: was beautiful. It felt like Red Dead Redemption, you know,
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: where it's like this Western that's like, and things have
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: moved on, you know, where it's like the prime of
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: this place is over and you get like this funeral
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: type music throughout this episode. And I just thought that
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: was beautiful. Just exceptional work. And, you know, I'm now
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: going to have to really pay more attention to the
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: score in all these episodes. I don't feel like I
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: have been, but it really got me this episode.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: And this episode, it was written by Justin Brick Gibson,
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: who wrote episode five, as well as Damon Lindelof.
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: Mm hmm.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: So he wrote five and six, Justin.
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: Yeah. And this one, this one says episode six says
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: him and Damon. But yeah.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: Yeah, Damon's had, like, co-writing on a lot of these.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: And knowing Damon and how he works, like, I've read
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: the Watchmen scripts and I've read other scripts that Damon
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: has written, like, by himself. And Damon will, his voice
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: is strong. Like, yeah, he definitely works on stuff, you know? Gotcha.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: And they even said that Damon wrote that line.
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: He did write the line.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: Yeah. So, yeah. But Justin has also had a lot
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: of experience, so.
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: I think there's so much that's intentional about every component
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: of the show. Like nothing is a coincidence or mistake or, or,
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: you know, throw away. I think from the direction to
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: the script, to the music, that the vibe is so purposeful.
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: And it has such heart, you know, with the, The
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: idea is not that anyone here is perfect or that
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: there's the right chosen one or right lantern bearer or
- 1:22:03Speaker 4: ring bearer. It's meant to, I think, really make us
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: question the absurdity and realism and challenges and burdensomeness of
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: this kind of superhero world and this kind of superhero role.
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: And it's making us pause. It's not just who takes it.
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: It's what about the parents of the person? What about
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: the family members? What about like, it's not simple. It's
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: really complicated.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: Yeah. It all matters. I would love to see more. Like,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: I know this season has been, you know, John season, but,
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: And I can't really see them doing this if they
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: even do another season. But I would love to see
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: more of a Guy Gardner version of this, where we
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: see more of what Guy was like before the ring
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: and everything. What led to him getting the ring and
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: all of that nature. So maybe, I don't know. I mean,
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: this show is a huge hit for HBO, so who knows?
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: Maybe we get a spinoff and we'll see. Anything else
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: before we get up out of here?
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: Give Earl a ring.
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: You know, there are some plant-based lanterns.
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: There's all kinds of lanterns. Yeah. Fish. I was reading
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: about one recently that I didn't know about where there's
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: a lantern who comes from like a lightless world. So
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: the idea of in brightest day or in blackest night
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: means nothing to them. Wow. So they're, they're, they're even
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: his code is different. Like his oath, uh, has more
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: to do with like vibration and sound than it has
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: anything to do with light or day. And I thought
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: that was really cool.
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: I love that.
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: I thought that was super cool. So it's just, you know,
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: there's been like, I mean, 70, 80 years of this now. So,
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: and a lot of great writers have done their Tate song,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: Green Lantern and the core. So you got all these
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: interesting variations of it.
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: The only thing I would add is just that I
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: would say this show in general has given me so
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: much more in terms of interest in lanterns at all. Like,
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: not just Green Lantern, but the whole universe of Lantern and,
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: you know, all the different colors and all the different...
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: stories that went into because i had never really dived
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: this deep into it before and even thought that there
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: was even something just beyond the typical comic book story
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: history like this show has and and i think that
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: was one of the main goals like to really put
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: a level of depth in it that would bring whether
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: you know the fandom type person or the person who's
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: never read a comic in their life that would bring
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: them into this world and then really show you how
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: important these characters really are. Just not just from a, again,
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: not just from a comic perspective, but just from a
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: storytelling perspective, just from a watching and growing with another
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: character fiction perspective, right? Like just things that you would
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: get out of books. So you could get out of movies.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: You can get out of all different types of mediums.
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: Like they're trying to show you like, look, you can
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: get the same type of approach with this, you know,
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: presumably quote only a comic book character, but it's way
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: more than that. Like that's so right. Yeah.
- 1:25:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: The thing about, you know, I'm a DC girl because
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: there's some humility in DC storytelling. They're not trying to
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: give you a 25-year plan that everything's going to tie together.
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: So there's some humble ways about them. But also, what's
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: great about this show is that they're justifying how lanterns
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: can exist in Rushville while these other conflicts and.
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: And teams and superheroes are also doing their thing that
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: in this universe.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: Starro, the conqueror was a thing.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: And you know, there's a Batman in Gotham and Superman and, and, and, uh,
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: justice gate.
- 1:26:00Speaker 3: Is that the group? Like they had, Oh yeah.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: Yeah. Justice gang.
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: Justice gang.
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: Like all, all these groups that exist and are acknowledged
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: and still these stories, these, these, these stories still work.
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: And I think that's still for me, at least like
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: it's satisfying to hear how everything is interconnected tissue, but
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: we don't necessarily need to see them all.
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: On screen all at the same time.
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: And in some, some big, uh, demonstrative, uh, flashy, you know,
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: crossover or.
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: Anything like that.
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: So I, I think, yeah, I, I think they've, DC
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: has been slowly cooking and making these things work in
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: their own way.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: And like, I'm wearing a.
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: Clay face t-shirt, like this is clay face as, you know,
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: as a, um, an elsewhere character can also exist or
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: maybe even coexist with the lanterns.
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: I mean, uh, what is it? The black mask. We
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: see the advertisement for it in the back of one
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: of the lanterns episodes. So there's already, yeah, there already
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: is the connection to slave face being made.
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: I didn't catch that.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Um, and the episode when John goes to get the,
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: when he first goes to, when he's in the mall,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: but after he falls down, you know, from the whatever portal,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: he's in the mall. He's the interview. Yeah. When he's walking,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: when he's about to go into the back room, he's
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: walking through the hallway and in the back of him
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: is an advertisement. And it's the same advertisement that they're
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: using in Clayface, I think.
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: I love that. And they already made a kind of
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: loose connection to Gorilla Grodd already. And we know that, well,
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: they've been working on that show. They're doing their thing.
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: DC is cooking right now, I gotta say.
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: No, and especially because I'm someone who loves all comics,
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: all these universes. And I love Superman. I've I liked
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: super girl. I think, you know, Melissa did a fantastic job.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: The movie just was whatever, but to know that lanterns
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: really is more of a centerpiece thing. And James Brown
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: has been talking about how a lot of will come
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: out of lanterns. And the fact that like the guardians
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: are going to be set up as this, you know,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: part of the origins of the DC universe. And, you know,
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: we'll see them throughout time and all their things that
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: they've been doing throughout all these years. I think that's
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: really dope. And yeah, Like you said, how this show
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: is drawing in everyone. Everybody. Like my next door neighbor,
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: like he was, you know, before it came on, he
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: was like, yo, Ben, I want to watch this, but
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: I want to know about the Landers. stuff, but I
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: don't know anything about it. And I was like, bro,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: you good, you know, just go ahead and watch it.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: Just drive in. The show is going to explain, you know,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: what you need to know. And then you can go
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: from there. And I know he's been watching every episode
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: he's hooked. And so, you know, this is getting people
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: like him, people everywhere. And then it's trying to translate
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: into the next Superman movie because, John can play a
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: big role in that. And going forward, it's just I
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: think this is really setting them up well for the future.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: I think that's pretty much it from this episode. Thank you, Drea,
