Latest / Birdland Territory / Pete Alonso's blast was ruled foul in a brutal loss to the Yankees
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Was the home run that was not a home run
- 0:11Speaker 1: in the end, and has all Birdland stirred up this morning.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome in another edition Birdland Territory. Steve Maluski, Burradbrock, Tim
- 0:19Speaker 1: Barblay says we're with you. After the Wednesday night lost
- 0:24Speaker 1: to the Orioles, lost to the Yankees five to three,
- 0:27Speaker 1: So now Thursday night tonight they need to win to
- 0:29Speaker 1: avoid a sweep. So guys, there's this a lot to
- 0:33Speaker 1: digest from this game. Pete Alonso hit the ball, looked
- 0:36Speaker 1: like oriol fans thought it was a home run, would
- 0:39Speaker 1: have led for to three, didn't get the call overruled
- 0:42Speaker 1: called foul in the field, replay did not overrule, and
- 0:47Speaker 1: then the Ools gave up two runs in the eighth
- 0:49Speaker 1: and lost five to three. I think two things can
- 0:53Speaker 1: be true here. They probably got a very bad call
- 0:56Speaker 1: that was not reversed, but then they kind of handed
- 0:59Speaker 1: the Yankees too runs to lose the game.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt, I think it's it was obviously unfortunately,
- 1:04Speaker 2: you could kind of feel the energy of the crowd
- 1:07Speaker 2: just kind of dissipate as soon as that ball was
- 1:09Speaker 2: ruled foul. It was kind of just took the energy
- 1:11Speaker 2: out of the ballpark and the orders just weren't able
- 1:13Speaker 2: to capitalize. Unfortunately, Cam came in and just kind of
- 1:17Speaker 2: lost control, just couldn't find the strike zone. A couple
- 1:20Speaker 2: hit batters of walk and just kind of cano did
- 1:22Speaker 2: his job. He got weak contact, and unfortunately they have
- 1:26Speaker 2: two runs without really a hard hit ball the entire inning.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And it's just unfortunate that the momentum really shifted after
- 1:32Speaker 2: that home run was reversed or upheld i should say,
- 1:36Speaker 2: as a foul ball. And it really is just unfortunate
- 1:38Speaker 2: how that game. You don't know how it's gonna end.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Like Craig Albern has said after the game, you still
- 1:42Speaker 2: have to get the nine outs with the lead, but
- 1:44Speaker 2: it's way different pitching in a game when you have
- 1:46Speaker 2: the lead, as opposed in the high game. You're just
- 1:48Speaker 2: trying to be a little bit too fine. And that's
- 1:50Speaker 2: what I saw there in that seventh inning, just a
- 1:52Speaker 2: little bit too fine around the strike zone, and unfortunately
- 1:54Speaker 2: gave up the lead and weren't able to capitalize on
- 1:56Speaker 2: anything else the rest of the game.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Well, I think in Brad, you can correct me if
- 2:01Speaker 3: I'm wrong, because you obviously played the game for many
- 2:03Speaker 3: years I think momentum in sports is such a real thing.
- 2:08Speaker 4: And Pete, when it looks like you.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Hit the go ahead homer, and obviously Masson was showing
- 2:14Speaker 3: that shot of the dugout, the guys are all fired up,
- 2:18Speaker 3: and then they realize it's rule foul.
- 2:19Speaker 4: They're like, no, no way, no way.
- 2:21Speaker 3: And then of course the replay ended up saying that
- 2:24Speaker 3: the call stood. It just seemed like it was a
- 2:27Speaker 3: big momentum swing in that ball game. But Steve, you're right,
- 2:32Speaker 3: two things can be true. And we were very optimistic
- 2:37Speaker 3: about this offense heading into this Yankee series, and they
- 2:40Speaker 3: don't have a hit within scoring position yet and they
- 2:43Speaker 3: just haven't done enough offensively in this series. And then
- 2:47Speaker 3: you combine it with the bottom of that inning where
- 2:51Speaker 3: Brad said that the Yankees didn't hit a ball out
- 2:53Speaker 3: of the infield and then they scored two runs that
- 2:56Speaker 3: just you know, a kid can't happen. And I don't
- 2:59Speaker 3: know what happened on the wild pitch where it looked
- 3:02Speaker 3: like Pozo lost the ball. It was like a delayed
- 3:05Speaker 3: reaction there where Jazz ended up taking advantage of that situation.
- 3:09Speaker 4: But just another gut punch loss for the O's last night.
- 3:15Speaker 1: They've lost two games in this series where they allowed
- 3:17Speaker 1: eight runs and fifteen hits and their pitchers struck out
- 3:20Speaker 1: twenty four Yankee batters in this series. But the oriel
- 3:23Speaker 1: scored four runs and went over twelve with runners in
- 3:27Speaker 1: scoring position. So we got a couple of angles. Look
- 3:30Speaker 1: at this play here as Alonzo drives it down the line.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I mean, depending upon the look here, some can look foul,
- 3:38Speaker 1: some can look fair. That's one look at it there,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and I'm going to hit the other one here real quick.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Yeah, And that was the one because Massin showed the
- 3:51Speaker 3: initial one where it looked like it was clear as
- 3:53Speaker 3: day it was fair. Then they came back from break.
- 3:56Speaker 3: This is the one where it looks fair. Then they
- 3:58Speaker 3: came back from break and showed the other angle. And
- 4:02Speaker 3: that's where I'm at, Guys, I understand. I think it's
- 4:07Speaker 3: one of those plays where if it was ruled a
- 4:11Speaker 3: home run, I truly believe it would have stood as
- 4:14Speaker 3: a home run just because is their definitive evidence for
- 4:17Speaker 3: it otherwise. And unfortunately the Orioles were on the wrong
- 4:21Speaker 3: side of this where I don't know if there was
- 4:23Speaker 3: definitive evidence otherwise.
- 4:26Speaker 4: But look, I know Chris Bassett was fired up.
- 4:29Speaker 3: We have a clip from Pete Alonzo afterwards, Jim Palmer
- 4:33Speaker 3: hit it on the head on the broadcast. Why there
- 4:35Speaker 3: isn't a laser, Why there isn't a camera on the
- 4:38Speaker 3: foul pole. It's ridiculous, you know, Like why not At
- 4:43Speaker 3: the end of the day, you want to make sure
- 4:45Speaker 3: that you get the call right. And MLB does not
- 4:49Speaker 3: have themselves in position to get the call right on
- 4:52Speaker 3: a ball that's hit over the foul pole.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and kind of like I talked about before that
- 4:57Speaker 2: we got on here. We see Chris Basst's quote here.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Because it's all it'll cost money.
- 5:01Speaker 5: That's it. That's literally it.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And I think that's the most frustrating part for players
- 5:06Speaker 2: is that we've they've spent so much money, and MLB
- 5:08Speaker 2: has spent so much money on getting the ABS system right.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And like I said, that's individual pitches that really aren't
- 5:14Speaker 2: gonna cost you a game here there, Maybe it'll cost
- 5:16Speaker 2: you that that. I mean, how many times this year
- 5:18Speaker 2: we've seen where base is loaded through to count, they
- 5:21Speaker 2: go to ABS and it overturns a call that like
- 5:23Speaker 2: wins you or loses you a game. The home runs
- 5:25Speaker 2: are runs. Those are definitive runs, either fair or foul.
- 5:29Speaker 2: And I just feel like in twenty twenty six, just
- 5:31Speaker 2: kind of repeating what those guys said, you can't have this,
- 5:34Speaker 2: it can't be wrong. Like you watch the NFL, we
- 5:36Speaker 2: were talking about first downs, touchdowns, everything of a review.
- 5:40Speaker 2: They have lasers, they have all the technology, They have
- 5:42Speaker 2: cameras that show you everything because points matter, and in baseball,
- 5:46Speaker 2: runs are what win you and lose you games. And
- 5:48Speaker 2: I just feel like in today's day and gay day
- 5:50Speaker 2: and age in twenty twenty six, you just can't get
- 5:53Speaker 2: it wrong. It can't be wrong in my opinion, Like
- 5:55Speaker 2: they have to know definitively fair or foul, and it
- 5:58Speaker 2: can't be from camera, and it can't be from the
- 6:00Speaker 2: umpire standing three hundred and fifty feet away trying to determine.
- 6:04Speaker 2: And like I said too, all these stadiums, every single
- 6:07Speaker 2: foul pole is completely different, So you have different heights,
- 6:09Speaker 2: different angles, different widths of the foul pole.
- 6:12Speaker 5: And it just it's I feel like we've seen so
- 6:15Speaker 5: many more balls.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Guys hit the ball so much further now because of
- 6:17Speaker 2: the launch angles and everything that every single one that's
- 6:20Speaker 2: down the line is over the foul pole. So unless
- 6:22Speaker 2: you have a camera that's definitively down the line, you're
- 6:25Speaker 2: just never gonna be able to get it one hundred
- 6:26Speaker 2: percent right. And I just feel like in today's day
- 6:28Speaker 2: and age, they just have to get it right one
- 6:30Speaker 2: way or another. They just have to figure this out
- 6:32Speaker 2: because it can win or lose your games. And I mean,
- 6:34Speaker 2: at this point it could cost some of the playoffs.
- 6:36Speaker 2: This you don't know how the game is going to finish.
- 6:38Speaker 2: You just don't know if this one game could be
- 6:40Speaker 2: the definitive between making or not making the playoffs. And
- 6:43Speaker 2: I think that's what frustrates the players more than anything else.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and they did go in to give up the
- 6:49Speaker 1: game sort of as camp Sanders really struggled in the eighth.
- 6:52Speaker 1: But as Brad said, maybe it plays that differently if
- 6:55Speaker 1: you have a four to three lead, there's a whole
- 6:57Speaker 1: different mindset there. And now you have this tech analogy
- 7:00Speaker 1: that we can see the ball touch the box by
- 7:03Speaker 1: sixteenth of an inch he called a strike, So why
- 7:06Speaker 1: can't something happen with the foul pole graphically? Electronically you
- 7:10Speaker 1: just raise it up and you and you have where
- 7:13Speaker 1: the ball passed, just like with the strike zone, Does
- 7:16Speaker 1: it touch it or not? Yeah, And they don't even
- 7:19Speaker 1: have that in the NFL, t him, do they for
- 7:21Speaker 1: the uprights?
- 7:22Speaker 4: No, they don't.
- 7:23Speaker 3: And that's where it kind of goes back to the
- 7:25Speaker 3: quote that you just flashed up there, Steve from Bassett,
- 7:27Speaker 3: and he's.
- 7:28Speaker 4: One hundred percent right.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Look, NFL especially because they make more money than all
- 7:33Speaker 3: these leagues combined. But it's not like MLB. You know,
- 7:36Speaker 3: these teams are eating ramen. You know, they do pretty
- 7:39Speaker 3: well themselves. Where you know, I was telling you guys
- 7:42Speaker 3: before the show twenty twenty five, the home run derby
- 7:45Speaker 3: one of the tiebreakers. It was a furthest hit home
- 7:48Speaker 3: run and cal Raley he had the furthest hit and
- 7:53Speaker 3: he beat out Brent Rooker by a tenth of a foot.
- 7:56Speaker 3: We think of all the stack Cast data that we have,
- 8:00Speaker 3: like there's more stats in MLB than any other sport,
- 8:03Speaker 3: and stack Cast can dive it like they have the technologies.
- 8:07Speaker 3: See they have it, Brad like where it's just do
- 8:10Speaker 3: you want to spend the money to do it in
- 8:12Speaker 3: all thirty of these ballparks and it needs to happen.
- 8:16Speaker 3: It just seems like such a no brainer. And look
- 8:19Speaker 3: even the NFL. It's not like this is an MLB problem.
- 8:22Speaker 3: The NFL just started the laser first down this past year.
- 8:27Speaker 3: They were doing the chain Gang in twenty twenty four
- 8:30Speaker 3: like it was nineteen seventy two. So they absolutely have
- 8:34Speaker 3: the money. MLB absolutely has the money to do this
- 8:37Speaker 3: in all thirty ballparks. It's just they're choosing not to.
- 8:42Speaker 6: So.
- 8:43Speaker 1: After the game, Pete Alonzo had some comments.
- 8:45Speaker 7: Well, I mean we have hawkeye.
- 8:48Speaker 6: I think a simple fix is like football, you have
- 8:51Speaker 6: the pylon camera like with the plane where it shoots
- 8:56Speaker 6: right across the goal line. And I feel like for us,
- 8:59Speaker 6: so we could easily have a laser or a camera
- 9:02Speaker 6: that shoots straight up.
- 9:03Speaker 7: I mean, for me, I'm not the only one.
- 9:05Speaker 6: It happens all the time to a bunch of guys
- 9:08Speaker 6: throughout the course of the year.
- 9:09Speaker 7: It happens a lot during the season.
- 9:11Speaker 6: Obviously, this is a big game and division, so obviously
- 9:14Speaker 6: this one's gonna be a little bit more amplified. But
- 9:16Speaker 6: this happens quite a few times throughout the season, more
- 9:20Speaker 6: than you would think. And I think having a camera
- 9:22Speaker 6: or laser shooting straight up, I mean we have all
- 9:25Speaker 6: the technology, analytics, uh in the in whatever in funds.
- 9:30Speaker 7: I mean, this is a I don't I don't see
- 9:33Speaker 7: why we can't do it.
- 9:34Speaker 6: But the reason why I've told it we can't do
- 9:38Speaker 6: it is because every ballpark is different, and that is.
- 9:42Speaker 7: Every ballpark is unique.
- 9:43Speaker 6: It's not the same dimensions everywhere. So that's that's my
- 9:46Speaker 6: understanding of it. Obviously, it sucks for us.
- 9:52Speaker 7: It sucks. Yeah, it sucks, but it is what it is.
- 9:56Speaker 6: And the umpire umpire, and then the umpire made the
- 9:59Speaker 6: call in the field, and and the UH in the
- 10:01Speaker 6: review room like stood stood with that call. And that's
- 10:04Speaker 6: that's what we have to live with and move on.
- 10:06Speaker 6: And we have to as a team and individually bear
- 10:08Speaker 6: down and and respond respond University.
- 10:13Speaker 1: This is what I see happening in these negotiations. Add
- 10:16Speaker 1: this to the list. Now they're going to come up
- 10:18Speaker 1: with more money between both sides to fix this, and
- 10:22Speaker 1: next year it'll be fixed, and it'll be called because
- 10:24Speaker 1: of the Alonzo game. That's what pay on national TV,
- 10:28Speaker 1: they'll go, well, here we can see tonight fall ahead
- 10:30Speaker 1: it thanks to the Alonzo game, we now have this
- 10:33Speaker 1: technology to show us that was a home run. Yeah,
- 10:37Speaker 1: and I just too late for the Orioles.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and I just think like going back to
- 10:41Speaker 2: the ABS, I think it's just gone. They've gone so
- 10:43Speaker 2: far with the technology and the replays and everything that
- 10:46Speaker 2: you just can't get anything wrong.
- 10:47Speaker 5: And that's just where I feel like it's at. It's
- 10:49Speaker 5: just we've gone so.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Far to now, like Steve said, you're within the one
- 10:53Speaker 2: tenth of an inch you missed the strikes on and
- 10:54Speaker 2: they can zoom in and show you how close. If
- 10:57Speaker 2: you can get that close on that, you just can't
- 10:59Speaker 2: get fair and foul wrong. I mean, I think it's
- 11:00Speaker 2: just going to be technology across the game. I think
- 11:02Speaker 2: it's gonna end up being you know, it will still
- 11:04Speaker 2: be umpires, but I think everything will just go back
- 11:06Speaker 2: to we have the technology. It makes no sense that
- 11:08Speaker 2: we have everything right except for phill in the blank.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And I just feel like it's going to be across
- 11:14Speaker 2: the board. You just have to get it right when
- 11:16Speaker 2: the time applies.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Think of it this way, Steve, You've been covering MLB
- 11:21Speaker 3: for a long time and they were so late to
- 11:25Speaker 3: the party. When it came to instant replay. It was taboo.
- 11:29Speaker 3: I think what was the first year where they could
- 11:31Speaker 3: review home runs your foulaw like we saw last night.
- 11:35Speaker 3: And I mean, Brad, how long were you in the
- 11:38Speaker 3: league before challenges And obviously ABS just started like they've
- 11:42Speaker 3: been so late to the party here where now of late,
- 11:46Speaker 3: you give them credit, they're leaning into it, but this
- 11:48Speaker 3: is just another area like that. This is a no
- 11:51Speaker 3: brainer area where they can absolutely improve. And Steve, I
- 11:55Speaker 3: think you make a great point. This is absolutely going
- 11:58Speaker 3: to be a part of the CBA and aotiations moving forward.
- 12:03Speaker 1: A lot more to talk about. The offense didn't show
- 12:05Speaker 1: up this series. We'll get into that. The Oils fall
- 12:08Speaker 1: back in the wild card, Samuel, but Siowa's back. Oh
- 12:11Speaker 1: by the way, we saw him in the clubhouse yesterday
- 12:13Speaker 1: and we're all like hey, lookers here. Then he was activated.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Luis de Leon could be coming to the major leagues
- 12:21Speaker 1: in a relief role. How about that news? And Alex Hoppy,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I want to touch on that outing last night. Nine
- 12:27Speaker 1: pitches ninety nine plus he looked good in the ninth.
- 12:30Speaker 1: We got a lot to do on this edition of
- 12:33Speaker 1: Birdland Territory.
- 12:39Speaker 8: We have pop in colors for Mack Weldon.

- 12:53Speaker 9: I have the socks. Obviously we got the shirt and
- 12:55Speaker 9: the jackets. But it's head to toe comfort no matter

- 13:36Speaker 1: Birdland Territory and so the offense not getting it done
- 13:40Speaker 1: in this series. Oh for twelve runners in scoring position,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and they had been rolling fifty one runs in eight games,
- 13:46Speaker 1: three twenty three runs in scoring position. Yankee show up
- 13:49Speaker 1: and the O's offense goes in the dumper. And here's
- 13:53Speaker 1: what it's led to two and seven this year against
- 13:55Speaker 1: the Yankees. And here's the one that's troubling to me,
- 13:58Speaker 1: three and fifteen since June twenty one, twenty twenty five.
- 14:02Speaker 1: It's Appo off Tampa. They have controlled it against Tampa.
- 14:06Speaker 1: They can beat the Rays. They don't seem to intimidate
- 14:08Speaker 1: the Ools in any way, shape or form. And I'm
- 14:11Speaker 1: not saying the Yankees intimidate the Oriols, but right now
- 14:14Speaker 1: that just feels like they'll make the play to win
- 14:17Speaker 1: in the Orioles will not make the play to win.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think it's I've kind of talked about this,
- 14:22Speaker 2: but especially in division teams, there's always seems to be
- 14:25Speaker 2: those one or two teams that, regardless of record, you.
- 14:28Speaker 5: Just feel comfortable with, you feel like the matchups work out.
- 14:31Speaker 2: And unfortunately for the Orioles, the Yankees the last couple
- 14:34Speaker 2: of years just kind of seem like that team that
- 14:36Speaker 2: they just can't get over the hump with and they
- 14:38Speaker 2: the matchups don't don't really work well for the Oriols,
- 14:41Speaker 2: and for whatever reason, they just can't figure out the
- 14:44Speaker 2: pitching that they obviously are one of the better pitching
- 14:46Speaker 2: staffs in all baseball, but the Orils just seem to
- 14:48Speaker 2: struggle against this pitching staff.
- 14:50Speaker 5: And even in this series where they were.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Throwing Rodin who only was able to go four innings,
- 14:54Speaker 2: and then yesterday they kind of had a starter that
- 14:56Speaker 2: they didn't even want to start anymore. He was gonna
- 14:58Speaker 2: be out of rotation, and he does a really good
- 15:00Speaker 2: job and gets to the bullpen, and we're kind of
- 15:02Speaker 2: talking about with that home run also with Pete, it
- 15:05Speaker 2: kind of rearranges the way they were able to use
- 15:07Speaker 2: their bullpen. When you get the Lee five thirty as
- 15:09Speaker 2: opposed to being down, now you're throwing your top relievers
- 15:11Speaker 2: and those guys have done a great job all year.
- 15:13Speaker 2: When you get Bednar there in the ninth, it just
- 15:16Speaker 2: becomes a really difficult game to win. And they just
- 15:18Speaker 2: have had the Oriols numbers this year, and it's been
- 15:20Speaker 2: closer games in that first series that we saw in
- 15:23Speaker 2: the Bronx, but it's just they're unable to get over
- 15:25Speaker 2: the hump against this team for whatever reason.
- 15:27Speaker 4: And what's a shame, Steve.
- 15:29Speaker 3: I think twenty twenty three and twenty twenty four of
- 15:31Speaker 3: the Orioles have winning records against the Yankees, and of
- 15:34Speaker 3: course it's gone in the wrong direction since that point.
- 15:38Speaker 3: But yeah, it's just been a frustrating series, guys, because
- 15:42Speaker 3: we know this Yankees offense, especially since Judge has gone down.
- 15:46Speaker 4: He's been out since the beginning of June.
- 15:48Speaker 3: This Yankees offense dead last in batting average on base
- 15:52Speaker 3: there were twenty eighth and runs scored heading into this series,
- 15:56Speaker 3: and the Orioles pitching is held up their end of
- 15:58Speaker 3: the bargain for the most part. That you're zero for
- 16:01Speaker 3: twelve with runners in scoring position, and Pete's still been fantastic,
- 16:06Speaker 3: you know, but the offense just it hasn't done nearly
- 16:09Speaker 3: enough in this series. They haven't done enough to win
- 16:12Speaker 3: these ball games. And unfortunately, I feel like a you know,
- 16:18Speaker 3: beating a dead horse here. It's the three steps forward,
- 16:21Speaker 3: three steps back, the three game winning streak, and then
- 16:24Speaker 3: you follow it up with a three game losing streak.
- 16:27Speaker 3: So you got to turn it around. And it starts
- 16:30Speaker 3: tonight and it's going to be a tough task going
- 16:32Speaker 3: up against Garrett Cole.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Very tough with crowdish Bradish on the mound for Baltimore.
- 16:38Speaker 1: So hopefully he pitches well and holds his own against Coal.
- 16:42Speaker 1: The Yankees pitching is so good, there's bullpen arms. Everyone
- 16:44Speaker 1: they bring in seems like they have a one fifty
- 16:46Speaker 1: ra they have a putaway pitch. It's like, look at
- 16:49Speaker 1: that guy's change up. Oh, I never heard of the guy.
- 16:51Speaker 1: So I'm not sure how the Yankees did this, but
- 16:54Speaker 1: they did, and so credit to them. I mean, Blackburn
- 16:57Speaker 1: was kind of a mediocre starter for the Athletics. Now
- 17:00Speaker 1: he's a lockount eighth inning guy for the Yankees with
- 17:03Speaker 1: great stats. So some adjustments were made here. I guess
- 17:07Speaker 1: Samuel Vassio is back. That was big for the Oriels.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Certainly Lenten's the lineup to put him in the middle
- 17:13Speaker 1: and display some people down. I'm going to be interested
- 17:17Speaker 1: over the long haul to find out how much this
- 17:20Speaker 1: guy catches one and two? What is the ceiling for
- 17:25Speaker 1: his offense? It certainly looks like thirty homers is capable
- 17:29Speaker 1: for this guy. Maybe forty, I don't know. He's got
- 17:32Speaker 1: quite a swing. And what are your guys thoughts?
- 17:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, I honestly think he might do a
- 17:38Speaker 2: little bit more dhing than catching here the rest of
- 17:40Speaker 2: the year, just because he kept getting nicked behind the
- 17:43Speaker 2: plate and when he got on rolls, it always felt
- 17:45Speaker 2: like there was these little injuries that kind of caused
- 17:47Speaker 2: his offense to take a back seat because he's battling
- 17:50Speaker 2: through these little injuries, and I think he's not gonna
- 17:52Speaker 2: not catch, but I just think I think they might
- 17:54Speaker 2: use him a little bit more DH. I think he
- 17:56Speaker 2: played a pretty decent first base last night too, which
- 17:58Speaker 2: was nice to see and kind of get Pe off
- 18:01Speaker 2: his feet and let Pete DH here and there. So
- 18:03Speaker 2: I think you'll see a little bit of combination between
- 18:05Speaker 2: first base, DH and some catch because you obviously don't
- 18:07Speaker 2: want him to not catch the rest of the year.
- 18:09Speaker 2: But Nervayas has been really doing a great job back there,
- 18:12Speaker 2: and Pozo when he's back there, he's been handling the
- 18:14Speaker 2: pitching staff well. So I think it allows them to
- 18:16Speaker 2: do a little bit more matchups later in the game too.
- 18:18Speaker 2: If Samuel is playing DH or first base, you can
- 18:21Speaker 2: kind of pinch it for those guys when a big
- 18:23Speaker 2: spot comes up. So it will definitely be interesting to
- 18:25Speaker 2: see how they use the catching core that they have
- 18:28Speaker 2: now moving forward the rest of the season.
- 18:31Speaker 3: People will probably get more of an idea of how
- 18:35Speaker 3: much or how little Sam's gonna catch within the next
- 18:37Speaker 3: couple of weeks, because coming up on rosters expanding in September,
- 18:41Speaker 3: obviously it's not crazy like it was in years past
- 18:45Speaker 3: with forty you get one position player, one pitcher. We
- 18:48Speaker 3: know that Blaze Alexander he's going to be back end
- 18:51Speaker 3: of the month beginning of September, So does he get
- 18:54Speaker 3: that roster spot if he comes back before does he
- 18:57Speaker 3: possibly get one of the catcher's roster spots when the
- 19:00Speaker 3: rosters expand?
- 19:01Speaker 4: Do you keep three catchers? If you do?
- 19:03Speaker 3: And then obviously how's Pete's calf feeling because he doesn't
- 19:07Speaker 3: play first base? He since Saturday when he suffered the injury.
- 19:13Speaker 3: And I thought Sam played a heck of a first
- 19:17Speaker 3: base last night that split. I was in Paine just
- 19:19Speaker 3: watching that. The diving catch the rob Jazz was a
- 19:23Speaker 3: heck of a play, the diving stop on Wells's grounder
- 19:27Speaker 3: got up tagged first base.
- 19:29Speaker 4: I thought he was great defensively at.
- 19:31Speaker 3: First base, and Steve he played a lot of first
- 19:33Speaker 3: base in the miners right, And I always heard.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Good things about him playing first.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and they told us often excuse my voice to
- 19:41Speaker 1: the guys, about how he's so agile, he's so flexible,
- 19:46Speaker 1: he moved so well for a big guy. That was
- 19:47Speaker 1: never more than last night. Yeah, the way he wurked
- 19:50Speaker 1: around the bag. I mean, he had a gold glove
- 19:52Speaker 1: kind of game, a great base, and so I do
- 19:55Speaker 1: think it's important that he catches a little for the
- 19:58Speaker 1: offense because the offense has been so poor from the
- 20:01Speaker 1: catchers happen and Beside went down that if you get
- 20:05Speaker 1: him in there catching now you've got to catch her
- 20:07Speaker 1: at a hitter and then these other spots you free
- 20:09Speaker 1: up the d h for another bat. So maybe the Orioles,
- 20:12Speaker 1: if their offense continues to struggle, they're probably gonna need
- 20:16Speaker 1: him catching some.
- 20:17Speaker 5: Yeah, you're you're right, Steve.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I think if the offense is inconsistent, I think it's
- 20:22Speaker 2: only better with him in the lineup, and if you
- 20:23Speaker 2: can put him back there behind home plate, where you said,
- 20:26Speaker 2: the production from the catcher position hasn't been the greatest.
- 20:29Speaker 5: So if you're able to put him back there and
- 20:30Speaker 5: he can hit.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Homers and do what he does, Yeah, I feel like
- 20:34Speaker 2: that's what they got to do here because it's all
- 20:36Speaker 2: hands on deck.
- 20:36Speaker 5: There's no trying different things out.
- 20:39Speaker 2: It's you got to kind of go with your gut
- 20:40Speaker 2: or go with the numbers, and just put it out
- 20:42Speaker 2: there and see what happens. Because they're kind of running
- 20:45Speaker 2: out of games here, so there's not really too many
- 20:46Speaker 2: games to kind of mess with this or mess with that.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Again, I think a lot of this depends on Pete's health.
- 20:53Speaker 3: If Pete's playing first base, I think you're gonna see
- 20:55Speaker 3: Sam behind the behind the plate. But if Pete's not
- 20:58Speaker 3: playing first then I think Sam is going to play
- 21:01Speaker 3: a good amount of first base. But you're right, Steve,
- 21:03Speaker 3: if he's catching, it just lengthens the lineup. It frees
- 21:07Speaker 3: up that DH spot, you know, with Pee back at
- 21:10Speaker 3: first base, Sam at catcher, it definitely lengthens this lineup.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I as good a job as Narbias is done
- 21:18Speaker 1: behind the plate. He was over at the end of
- 21:20Speaker 1: his Boston run. He's like three for forty eight going
- 21:23Speaker 1: back to time with the Red Sox. I mean, just
- 21:26Speaker 1: not going right now. He's a two hundred hitter, you know,
- 21:30Speaker 1: in his career, but he's not showing it. Right now,
- 21:33Speaker 1: we got more to do on Birdland Territory.
- 21:36Speaker 10: See Gek is the official ticket marketplace for Major League Baseball,
- 21:39Speaker 10: and anytime you want to go to a game, you
- 21:41Speaker 10: should go to Seakeek. I used to call the director
- 21:43Speaker 10: of team travel. I used to call the traveling secretary
- 21:45Speaker 10: whatever they want to be called KP to try to
- 21:48Speaker 10: get a seat. But on Seekeek, I can pick my
- 21:50Speaker 10: own seat and I can pick where I want to
- 21:52Speaker 10: sit instead of being told where to sit.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a great option.
- 21:57Speaker 11: And summer is coming to an end here soon. I'm
- 22:00Speaker 11: going out and finding all the day games possible, all
- 22:04Speaker 11: the warm weather cities so I could stay in this
- 22:07Speaker 11: tank top I can watch very competitive baseball as the
- 22:10Speaker 11: calendar turns in two fall. I want to make sure
- 22:13Speaker 11: that I get the most out of this tank top
- 22:16Speaker 11: and warm weather and sea geek is where I would
- 22:19Speaker 11: go and get my seats.
- 22:20Speaker 10: You can use code Territory ten for ten percent off
- 22:23Speaker 10: your next set of MLB tickets at SIKI. That's ten
- 22:26Speaker 10: percent off MLB tickets with promo code Territory ten. Make
- 22:29Speaker 10: sure you click the link in the description to download
- 22:31Speaker 10: the app and have the code automatically added. To your
- 22:34Speaker 10: account so you can use it later.
- 22:37Speaker 1: So the o's got to get a gallon here. Three
- 22:39Speaker 1: losses by five total runs five and eight in the
- 22:43Speaker 1: last thirteen A couple losses can radically change the outlook
- 22:47Speaker 1: member when they had a winning record since the deadline.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Now they do not with these losses. So one and
- 22:52Speaker 1: a half back in the wild card, but trailing a
- 22:54Speaker 1: couple teams. I thought it was interesting reported last night
- 22:58Speaker 1: that Luis Devione, we'll move to a bullpen roll at
- 23:02Speaker 1: Triple A, pitcher from the Dominican Republic, one of their
- 23:05Speaker 1: top young lefties who was recently promoted to Triple A.
- 23:08Speaker 1: He was on a real role at the end of
- 23:10Speaker 1: his time with Double A one eighty e ra is
- 23:13Speaker 1: last eight games preseason, top one hundred back at the
- 23:17Speaker 1: end of the top one hundred by Baseball America. This
- 23:20Speaker 1: is interesting. We haven't seen the Ools do this with
- 23:22Speaker 1: one of their pitching prospects yet, sort of target him
- 23:26Speaker 1: for a bullpen roll. And we know their left handed
- 23:30Speaker 1: relief has been a little thin, so that it all
- 23:33Speaker 1: kind of adds up here.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I think, yeah, definitely, And I think I think they're
- 23:37Speaker 2: trying to find some guys that can maybe pitch some
- 23:39Speaker 2: high leverage spots. They're they're trying different guys. They've they've
- 23:42Speaker 2: used some of the same guys. Kitchridge and Garcia pretty
- 23:45Speaker 2: much been at the back all year, but they're really
- 23:47Speaker 2: trying to bridge the gap to the eighth and ninth inning,
- 23:50Speaker 2: and I think they're going with the hot hands. So
- 23:52Speaker 2: if you can get a lefty that allows you to
- 23:54Speaker 2: pitch high leverage in for our innings, which they haven't
- 23:57Speaker 2: had really all year.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Well for him, he's had spots where he was going well.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Right now he's a little rocky, little shaky, so I
- 24:03Speaker 2: don't know if they'd be comfortable using him. But if
- 24:05Speaker 2: you can find a lefty that can pitch some high
- 24:08Speaker 2: leverage outs three to and him, you can think multiple
- 24:11Speaker 2: innings he could throw. That would be a huge boost
- 24:14Speaker 2: to this bullpen because right now it's just kind of
- 24:17Speaker 2: trying to piece it together and you're trying to find
- 24:19Speaker 2: the hot hand and it's just some nights is gonna
- 24:21Speaker 2: work and some nights it's not. But right now you
- 24:22Speaker 2: can't really afford to have those Is it going to
- 24:25Speaker 2: work tonight?
- 24:25Speaker 4: Is it not?
- 24:26Speaker 5: Kind of scenario.
- 24:27Speaker 2: So if you can get somebody that's hot, or find
- 24:29Speaker 2: somebody good like a lefty. Maybe he's a guy you
- 24:31Speaker 2: plug in there late innings and see what happens.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Yeah, Brad, I think that's perfectly illustrated over these past
- 24:38Speaker 3: couple of nights right where Cam Sanders didn't have it
- 24:42Speaker 3: last night, Josh Walker, he didn't have it the night prior.
- 24:45Speaker 3: And look, both of those guys prior to those outings
- 24:49Speaker 3: actually have more than held their own in this stretch
- 24:52Speaker 3: with the o's. But you know, and you can even
- 24:55Speaker 3: throw Hoppy into the mix where these are kind of
- 24:58Speaker 3: guys that still trying to find they're footing in MLB,
- 25:01Speaker 3: trying to get consistency in their career where it's tough,
- 25:06Speaker 3: there's going to be some of those outings like these
- 25:09Speaker 3: past couple of nights where they're just trying to find
- 25:12Speaker 3: some dudes. And I think that's where, you know, obviously
- 25:17Speaker 3: bringing back Michael Farrett was big, but you know, losing
- 25:20Speaker 3: Tyler Wells in this stretch definitely has hurt this pen.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Losing one of those guys you can really count on
- 25:26Speaker 3: in a high leverage situation. And I think Steve, that's
- 25:28Speaker 3: why you know you're trying, you know, Louise Dalleon and
- 25:31Speaker 3: and maybe he ends up getting the call up in
- 25:33Speaker 3: September after a couple of rehab as Simons.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Heck, I'm still amazed, guys.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Felix Baltista about to begin a rehab assignment next week.
- 25:42Speaker 4: That blows my mind.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, so, we'll definitely be watching every single
- 25:48Speaker 3: outing by Felix as well.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Reinforcement's coming, Hopefully it's not not too late. Delli on
- 25:55Speaker 1: big two seams, sinker a lot of ground ball, seventy
- 25:57Speaker 1: grade on that some scouts put on it, sixty slider,
- 26:00Speaker 1: fifty five splits. Really got some really good material to
- 26:04Speaker 1: work with. Let's wrap up Baseball a Birdland territory, our
- 26:08Speaker 1: latest edition, Next Big.
- 26:11Speaker 12: Bad Morning Show Vinnian Haiti three D live on YouTube
- 26:16Speaker 12: Monday through Friday six till six, Search one five seven
- 26:20Speaker 12: A fan Baltimore and never miss a moment of coverage
- 26:23Speaker 12: on the teams you love.
- 26:26Speaker 1: So right hander Alex Hoppy, who I keep wanting to
- 26:29Speaker 1: call Logan O Hoppy a very similar name. Not a catcher,
- 26:33Speaker 1: not a pitcher. I was really impressed with that night
- 26:36Speaker 1: Inting Last Night Brad ninety nine plus one hundred plus
- 26:40Speaker 1: four pitches. Yeah, he's one of the top six percent
- 26:44Speaker 1: of velocity in Major League Baseball and has a slider
- 26:48Speaker 1: that's got some swing in this too.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no doubt in my mind watching that outing that,
- 26:52Speaker 2: I'm like, this guy has closer stuff. There's obviously some
- 26:56Speaker 2: pieces he's got to get together and uh to become
- 26:59Speaker 2: a closer set up man, But there's no doubt in
- 27:01Speaker 2: my mind swinging miss slider that he threw one last
- 27:03Speaker 2: night that was just nasty the same plane as his
- 27:06Speaker 2: fastball broke down below. I mean, Jim Palmer really said
- 27:09Speaker 2: whoa when he threw it as a swing and miss.
- 27:11Speaker 2: So Jim Palmer saying that he's seen a few sliders
- 27:14Speaker 2: and fastballs in his day, but there's not many guys
- 27:17Speaker 2: throwing ninety nine to one hundred and one like he is.
- 27:19Speaker 2: I think it's just gotta find consistency in the strike
- 27:22Speaker 2: zone and just be confident in his stuff. There's I
- 27:25Speaker 2: think the biggest jump guys have to make his understanding
- 27:28Speaker 2: that your stuff plays, and I think him and Cam
- 27:30Speaker 2: Sanders both right now are just need to understand their
- 27:34Speaker 2: stuff is good enough.
- 27:35Speaker 5: They don't need to do anything extra. They just need
- 27:37Speaker 5: to be in the strike zone.
- 27:38Speaker 2: And I think both of these guys really could play
- 27:41Speaker 2: big pieces in the bullpen moving forward, especially Hoppy with
- 27:44Speaker 2: that fastball. I mean, he just threw that one to
- 27:47Speaker 2: Bird last night at the top of his own and
- 27:48Speaker 2: it was in the mid before he swung. And he
- 27:50Speaker 2: threw one to Garret Jones also that was in the
- 27:52Speaker 2: mid And it's just having confidence when you throw ninety
- 27:55Speaker 2: nine to one hundred and one. You don't need to
- 27:56Speaker 2: be perfect with your fastball. It's more about kind of cutting.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Was always told I was showing when I got in
- 28:02Speaker 2: trouble with my command. It was putting the plate in
- 28:04Speaker 2: three sections of three with his fastball. Just cut that
- 28:08Speaker 2: plate in half and throw at the halfs and let
- 28:10Speaker 2: the movement and the velocity take care of itself. And
- 28:12Speaker 2: I think once they just get some confidence in them,
- 28:14Speaker 2: we're going to really see them take off because they
- 28:16Speaker 2: have the stuff that you need to pitch at the
- 28:17Speaker 2: big league level in those high leveraged spots. And that's
- 28:20Speaker 2: what I see from those guys arms. In the last week,
- 28:23Speaker 2: I've seen them kind of progress in that in that direction.
- 28:27Speaker 3: Yeah, with Hapi, you can't exactly teach that type of velosity.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Steve Itch just with him.
- 28:32Speaker 3: If you can just harness the command, he could be
- 28:35Speaker 3: a big weapon in this pen. And look, he's going
- 28:38Speaker 3: to get opportunities down the stretch for sure.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Hatchets to interview on the other day. Really was how
- 28:45Speaker 1: said the Ools were so welcoming to them, both players
- 28:48Speaker 1: and staff essentially said, let us know what you need, man,
- 28:51Speaker 1: whenever you need. The coaches very hands off. They should
- 28:54Speaker 1: do what you do well. Any tinkering will come later.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Go go pitch man, We like your stuff. And so
- 29:00Speaker 1: so he's been averaging ninety eight point zero on his fastball,
- 29:03Speaker 1: and it was ninety nine point five last night with
- 29:06Speaker 1: four pitches one hundred plus. So it was electric stuff.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Fun to see struck out Ben Rice and Luis Garcia
- 29:12Speaker 1: Junior I wrote it. But I'm going to have my
- 29:14Speaker 1: sub stack if you want to check that out. Alex
- 29:17Speaker 1: hoppy and I'm gonna stop calling him logan over he
- 29:22Speaker 1: continues to develop as an oreole. All right, guys, you
- 29:26Speaker 1: Oils need to get this one tonight. Bradish. If they
- 29:29Speaker 1: can win tonight and have a good series this weekend,
- 29:31Speaker 1: we'll all be back on the bandwagon. And we're day
- 29:34Speaker 1: to day on this thing or am I not right here?
- 29:37Speaker 5: Yeah, No, you're right. It's just gotta find the momentum
- 29:40Speaker 5: again and pull off.
- 29:40Speaker 2: A number three or four game win streak and then
- 29:42Speaker 2: instead of having the multiple losses in a row, just
- 29:45Speaker 2: keep it at one and win some more and uh yeah.
- 29:47Speaker 2: But just like we've said on the Bandwagon, they got
- 29:50Speaker 2: they're right there still, and I feel like you can't
- 29:53Speaker 2: can't give up on him until they're they're dead. You know,
- 29:55Speaker 2: there's there's no way with the way the season's been going.
- 29:58Speaker 3: It's just such a unique season where if you're sixty
- 30:02Speaker 3: one and sixty six in a normal year, you aren't
- 30:06Speaker 3: close to just being one and a half games out
- 30:08Speaker 3: of the wildcards.
- 30:10Speaker 4: But this is one of those seasons. Like I get it.
- 30:14Speaker 3: It's frustrating, but it really is right in front of them.
- 30:18Speaker 1: It is gotta beat the Yankees, Birdland, they gotta get
- 30:21Speaker 1: one tonight, build some momentum into the weekend, and see
- 30:24Speaker 1: where they stand one and a half out heading into
- 30:26Speaker 1: the final game of the Yankee series for that final wildcard. Hey,
- 30:31Speaker 1: thanks for watching. We'll catch you next time. On another
- 30:34Speaker 1: edition of Birdland Territory.
