- 0:00Speaker 1: Good evening. I'm Linda swayin. US President Donald Trump says
- 0:03Speaker 1: a trade deal has been reached with Canada, subject to finalization.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Trump had threatened to impose fifty percent tariffs on a
- 0:10Speaker 1: wide range of Canadian goods starting at midnight last night,
- 0:13Speaker 1: but extended the deadline at the last minute. He told
- 0:16Speaker 1: reporters outside the White House today that a very good
- 0:18Speaker 1: conversation was had with Prime Minister Mark Carney last night
- 0:21Speaker 1: and what he calls a very fair deal has been reached.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Tariffs will be non existent for our farmers. Our farmers
- 0:27Speaker 2: were paying tremendous tariffs into Canada and those tariffs are
- 0:32Speaker 2: going to be totally vistritten down to zero.
- 0:35Speaker 1: He says the US is reducing the tariffs on Canadian goods,
- 0:37Speaker 1: but would not offer further detail.
- 0:40Speaker 2: They were going to get a fifty percent tariff when
- 0:42Speaker 2: everything's starting today, and we've held it back three days.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's so subject to finalization of documents. So subject to
- 0:50Speaker 2: the finalization of documents. We have a deal with Canada,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and I think it's a very good deal for both
- 0:55Speaker 2: both parties.
- 0:56Speaker 1: US Trade Representative Jamison Greer and Canadian US Trade Minister
- 1:00Speaker 1: Dominic LeBlanc spoke with reporters in Washington today. Greer says
- 1:04Speaker 1: he's very happy where the two countries have ended up.
- 1:06Speaker 3: We feel confident that we've reached an agreement that will
- 1:10Speaker 3: not only continue to protect American workers, American jobs, American
- 1:13Speaker 3: supply chains, but really strengthen the North American economy and
- 1:17Speaker 3: create a situation where North America will continue to be
- 1:20Speaker 3: an energy powerhouse, a manufacturing powerhouse, and align on important
- 1:25Speaker 3: things like economic security and digital securities.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Minister LeBlanc says the Prime Minister wanted to ensure that
- 1:30Speaker 1: supply management was protected.
- 1:31Speaker 2: We needed to ensure that the supply management regime remained
- 1:36Speaker 2: entirely intact, and I'm confident that that's the case.
- 1:39Speaker 1: The opposition parties were briefed on the details of the
- 1:42Speaker 1: deal reached on Churchill Falls, and the Liberals say most
- 1:44Speaker 1: concerning for them is the loss of an escalator on
- 1:48Speaker 1: the sale of gull Island power here's bocm zach power.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Liberal leader John Hogan says the previous government fought hard
- 1:54Speaker 4: to secure an escalating price on gull Island power to
- 1:57Speaker 4: ensure the value increases over time. He says under the agreement,
- 2:01Speaker 4: the price Quebec pays Newfoundland and Labrador for Gull Island
- 2:04Speaker 4: power does not increase in time, and Hogan claims that
- 2:08Speaker 4: the price is structured to drop over the life of
- 2:10Speaker 4: the agreement. He says it's hard to believe that the
- 2:13Speaker 4: province would give up another fifty year agreement without an
- 2:17Speaker 4: escalating price. He also points to Newfoundland and Labrador's ability
- 2:20Speaker 4: to wield power through Quebec to the United States. He
- 2:24Speaker 4: claims what's actually been secured is synthetic transmission. As per
- 2:28Speaker 4: the agreement, Hogan says NL Hydro may elect to sell
- 2:31Speaker 4: to Hydro Quebec. What says is a small portion of
- 2:36Speaker 4: power based on US prices minus transmission charges. He says
- 2:41Speaker 4: that that provides market based pricing for a limited amount
- 2:44Speaker 4: of electricity sold to Quebec, less than ten percent of
- 2:47Speaker 4: total power Quebec will receive in place of market based pricing.
- 2:53Speaker 4: That was the twenty twenty four MoU which had for
- 2:56Speaker 4: its Churchill Falls power.
