- 0:04Speaker 1: The Joe Rogan Experience. Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast
- 0:08Speaker 1: by night, all day. We're up. All right. MVP in
- 0:15Speaker 1: the house. The most enigmatic, difficult dude to solve in
- 0:20Speaker 1: all of MMA. That's you, man. Bro, you know what?
- 0:23Speaker 2: I want to start simply because.
- 0:27Speaker 1: What you have done for.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Me specifically, I get a lot of criticisms A lot
- 0:35Speaker 2: of hate, and especially obviously jumping when I first got
- 0:38Speaker 2: into the MMA world. New to me, you know, I'm
- 0:42Speaker 2: just like, okay, let me just be myself, do my thing.
- 0:45Speaker 2: First fight goes well, land this crazy kick, go viral,
- 0:50Speaker 2: and I get nothing but hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.
- 0:54Speaker 2: But then having prominent figures like yourself that constantly have
- 0:59Speaker 2: been championing my style, championing Jumping in the points element
- 1:06Speaker 2: of things.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I just appreciate you for that. Oh, my pleasure, brother.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I appreciate you. It's almost like we called for you
- 1:12Speaker 1: because there was a time in the early days of MMA,
- 1:15Speaker 1: like in the early 2000s, where I was like, this
- 1:17Speaker 1: is what's missing. What's missing is point fighters. And people
- 1:21Speaker 1: would like mock me. No, no, no, no, no. Like
- 1:23Speaker 1: I've sparred with these dudes. You can't hit them. It's
- 1:26Speaker 1: a different thing. I'm like, they have a very specific skill,
- 1:29Speaker 1: that skill of closing distance and being elusive. It's not
- 1:32Speaker 1: like any other sport. It's almost like fencing and MMA
- 1:36Speaker 1: and martial arts combined.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I always tell people that like most of the
- 1:40Speaker 2: combat sports in terms of kickboxing, the full contact side
- 1:44Speaker 2: of things is more to do with the, there's a
- 1:47Speaker 2: fixation on power, knocking people out. Whereas our element is
- 1:51Speaker 2: just the speed element.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Getting in and getting out.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Yeah. Not getting in touch.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Like you said, the tag, tag kind of feel, fencing,
- 1:58Speaker 2: similar kind of footwork. And yeah, just not many people
- 2:01Speaker 2: had decided to cross over to any kind of full
- 2:05Speaker 2: contact world, really.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And you had the likes of Wonderboy Thompson. Raymond Daniels.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Raymond Daniels. You and Raymond were the most prominent ones
- 2:14Speaker 1: in Him and Glory. Yeah. Of course, you. Yeah. Yeah. Well,
- 2:17Speaker 1: he did a little bit of MMA. A little bit
- 2:18Speaker 1: of MMA, yeah. But you're more prominent in MMA. But
- 2:21Speaker 1: the point was that this was an element that when
- 2:25Speaker 1: I remember when I was doing Taekwondo and I would
- 2:27Speaker 1: fight in tournaments, I would occasionally fight in point fighting tournaments.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I'd fight a guy like Mafia Holloway or one of
- 2:32Speaker 1: these guys that were really good. I'm like, this is crazy.
- 2:35Speaker 1: This is such a crazy skill. Very different. And when
- 2:38Speaker 1: I saw MMA where a lot of guys were just
- 2:41Speaker 1: real flat footed and waiting, I'm like, there's a giant
- 2:44Speaker 1: opening here. And then you came along. And you really
- 2:47Speaker 1: were the proof of concept. And I was like, okay,
- 2:50Speaker 1: this is it. You get a world champion at that
- 2:53Speaker 1: who figures all the other stuff out because essentially striking
- 2:57Speaker 1: is striking. You can learn... throwing leg kicks differently. You
- 3:00Speaker 1: can learn different stances and movements. The grappling is the
- 3:05Speaker 1: big hurdle. But once you can solve the takedown defense
- 3:09Speaker 1: and some of the grappling hurdles, and you've actually got
- 3:11Speaker 1: submission victories, then you've got a real problem because every
- 3:14Speaker 1: fight starts standing up. Every fight starts standing up with
- 3:18Speaker 1: a big-ass fucking cage. It's a big-ass cage. And I
- 3:22Speaker 1: see guys like Kevin Holland, he's like, what the fuck
- 3:26Speaker 1: do I do with this guy?
- 3:27Speaker 2: He hated every moment of it.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I could feel it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: But that's just part of my style is that kind
- 3:34Speaker 2: of frustrating people because it's just so unfamiliar. For someone
- 3:38Speaker 2: like yourself, you would kind of be in there, whether
- 3:41Speaker 2: you're successful or not, you'd understand what's happening and you'd
- 3:45Speaker 2: be calm enough still to be like, okay, I need
- 3:46Speaker 2: to know how to figure this out because I've experienced
- 3:49Speaker 2: this before. For someone that's never experienced, and because there's
- 3:52Speaker 2: few of us in the MMA world, who do you
- 3:55Speaker 2: go to to train?
- 3:57Speaker 1: There's very few people that are really good at that. Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And like I said, Wonderboy Thompson. Yeah.
- 4:02Speaker 2: He, you know, a friend of mine, obviously me and
- 4:06Speaker 2: him and, you know, us getting on. And he's even
- 4:09Speaker 2: said people have contacted him. Like, oh, yeah, I'm fighting MVP. Like,
- 4:13Speaker 2: I want to train with you. He's like, I want
- 4:14Speaker 2: MVP to win.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I can't help you, bro. Can't do anything. Well, it's
- 4:22Speaker 1: good for the sport. Yeah. It really is because... You know, like,
- 4:25Speaker 1: think about there's certain techniques that just come along, like
- 4:28Speaker 1: the calf kick. And all of a sudden, like, how
- 4:30Speaker 1: is this? People have been kicking legs for so long.
- 4:33Speaker 1: How is this kicking a different spot on the leg
- 4:36Speaker 1: kind of revolutionary? Yeah, yeah, yeah. We need to see that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And I think the introduction of you is going to
- 4:41Speaker 1: make a lot of these guys that are, like, high-level
- 4:43Speaker 1: point guys go, hmm, there's a spot there for me. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Because the open, like, there's always an advantage in the
- 4:50Speaker 1: fact that every round starts standing up. Mm-hmm. As long
- 4:53Speaker 1: as you have takedown defense, every round starts in your realm.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And your realm is different than all the other stand-up realms.
- 5:01Speaker 1: It's totally different. And if a guy is a plotting
- 5:04Speaker 1: guy and he thinks, oh, this is my world, that's
- 5:06Speaker 1: not your world. It's your world against someone who agrees
- 5:10Speaker 1: to fight the way you fight. 100%.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And I always say that because I've come up against
- 5:15Speaker 2: guys and was like, man, he's got a big punch
- 5:18Speaker 2: on him.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And I agree.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I get it. But power only... means
- 5:22Speaker 2: something if you land. And my whole element is not
- 5:26Speaker 2: being touched.
- 5:27Speaker 1: It's also fucking with people's heads. One of the things
- 5:30Speaker 1: you did during the Jarrett Cannoneer fight after you hit him,
- 5:33Speaker 1: you were like, calm down. Calm down. I was like,
- 5:36Speaker 1: oh no. Because you imagine just getting popped, your eyes
- 5:40Speaker 1: are running, your nose hurts. And this dude standing in
- 5:43Speaker 1: front of you going, calm down, calm down. I'm like, no,
- 5:47Speaker 1: he didn't. Oh, no. It's psychological warfare. But that's the end.
- 5:51Speaker 2: That's obviously, that's kind of like part of my personality
- 5:54Speaker 2: coming out and the entertaining side of me. And a
- 5:58Speaker 2: lot obviously added to the criticism that I would get,
- 6:01Speaker 2: which because of how I would make my opponents feel
- 6:05Speaker 2: in terms of their frustration and then obviously the antics
- 6:08Speaker 2: on top of it, so many people, the main term
- 6:12Speaker 2: that came with Me was like, oh, he's fighting cans.
- 6:15Speaker 2: He's fighting cans. My whole career was like, he's fighting cans.
- 6:18Speaker 2: But I always say to people is I'm just making
- 6:21Speaker 2: it seem a lot less difficult than it actually is.
- 6:26Speaker 2: These guys are super talented fighters. I'm just not fighting
- 6:29Speaker 2: on the same wavelength and timing as them. As you said,
- 6:33Speaker 2: these guys that plod around, they're so used to it.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So when they're fighting other people, it looks very even.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And when they're fighting somebody that they just can't get
- 6:41Speaker 2: their hands on, and they're getting frustrated on.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Top of that.
- 6:44Speaker 2: So it's the mental side, the physical side.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And you have a lot of power, so there's consequences. Yeah,
- 6:49Speaker 1: there's consequences. It's not like you're tippy-tappy, pit-patting them. Every
- 6:54Speaker 1: now and then, like the Cyborg fight was one of
- 6:56Speaker 1: the craziest knockouts in all of MMA history.
- 6:59Speaker 2: You know, one thing I actually wanted to do, actually...
- 7:02Speaker 2: brought some gifts for you, but one of the things
- 7:04Speaker 2: I actually wanted.
- 7:04Speaker 1: To bring for you was... Don't tell me you brought.
- 7:07Speaker 2: A piece of his head.
- 7:11Speaker 1: No.
- 7:11Speaker 2: He wouldn't let me have that, so I had to
- 7:13Speaker 2: leave it.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I actually wanted to.
- 7:14Speaker 2: We basically had a Pokeball come, a very specific one,
- 7:18Speaker 2: and they messed up on delivery, but I'm going to
- 7:20Speaker 2: get it to you in Vegas.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Okay. So when we go over to Vegas, I'm just
- 7:23Speaker 1: making sure.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I get that to you because, again, it's something that
- 7:26Speaker 2: you've spoken about with me, and it's a big part
- 7:29Speaker 2: of my history. In MMA, just that cyborg fight.
- 7:33Speaker 1: That was the most gruesome injury I've ever seen. I've
- 7:38Speaker 1: seen a lot of broken bones. I've never seen someone
- 7:40Speaker 1: with a caved-in head. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 2: The doctors were saying that, what we were hearing back
- 7:45Speaker 2: from them, they said he's only ever seen that in
- 7:47Speaker 2: a car accident, never in.
- 7:50Speaker 1: MMA. That is so crazy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that
- 7:54Speaker 1: was his last fight. And I know after the fight,
- 7:56Speaker 1: he was like, we're going to fight again. The doctor's like, hey. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Because I think he was....
- 8:02Speaker 2: Someone sent me something where he was supposed to fight again.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And I'm not sure what happened there, but yeah, he didn't.
- 8:08Speaker 1: It's crazy. How could you fight again after that? What
- 8:10Speaker 1: made it?
- 8:11Speaker 2: I felt very bad, obviously, at the time as well.
- 8:15Speaker 2: But then I didn't see him for another two years.
- 8:17Speaker 1: There it is right here. Boom. That was just crazy.
- 8:21Speaker 2: And the sound, the sound of that was. It's only
- 8:24Speaker 2: when I watched it back.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Give me the sound, Jamie. It sounds like a baseball
- 8:37Speaker 1: bat on a pumpkin. You know what I mean? Just whop. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah,
- 8:43Speaker 1: it was different. The thing is, I didn't know. I
- 8:45Speaker 1: keep telling everybody.
- 8:46Speaker 2: I didn't know what happened because, obviously, they're like, you celebrated, like,
- 8:48Speaker 2: threw the Pokeball at him afterwards.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I did not know. You thought it was just a knockout. Yeah,
- 8:53Speaker 1: this was a knockout.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And obviously, because I'm kicking his legs, I'm assuming maybe
- 8:56Speaker 2: I broke his nose or because I can see he's
- 8:58Speaker 2: not out, but he's in pain. It must be something
- 9:01Speaker 2: like that. It's only the next day that I found out.
- 9:04Speaker 2: But yeah, it was a bad one. That was a
- 9:07Speaker 2: bad one. Yeah, it was a very bad one. And
- 9:09Speaker 2: the thing is, like I said, I met him, I
- 9:12Speaker 2: want to say like two, two and a half years
- 9:14Speaker 2: later down the line. obviously this clip's just been going
- 9:18Speaker 2: crazy online and so on and so forth.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And I just, I felt awkward. I didn't want to,
- 9:22Speaker 1: but I also.
- 9:23Speaker 2: He had come over for another MMA show, but with
- 9:25Speaker 2: one of his students, but one of his students was
- 9:29Speaker 2: fighting one of my teammates. And at the beginning, my
- 9:32Speaker 2: coaches were like, oh, do you want to, you know,
- 9:34Speaker 2: go on at some point, go and see him and
- 9:37Speaker 2: say hello. I was like, yeah, please. Like, I'd love to,
- 9:40Speaker 2: because that's the last time I saw him. The fight
- 9:44Speaker 2: happens and my teammates, is known for his leg locks
- 9:48Speaker 2: and breaks his student's leg.
- 9:51Speaker 1: So I'm like, fuck sake.
- 9:55Speaker 2: So the officers were like, do you want to go
- 9:57Speaker 2: and see him? I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Try.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I just felt like I needed to.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Sure.
- 10:02Speaker 2: And I kind of walk into the room. His guy's
- 10:05Speaker 2: obviously upset for losing. He's like getting sorted out by
- 10:08Speaker 2: the medics and he's sitting there just looks at me and.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I'm like, hey. What do you say? Like, I'm lucky.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I was just like, hey, he's like shook my hand.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Like I could just feel the energy wasn't right. It
- 10:23Speaker 2: just wasn't the right time. But I didn't know when
- 10:25Speaker 2: I would get to see him again. And I haven't
- 10:27Speaker 2: again since. So, yeah, I just felt it's just one
- 10:31Speaker 2: of those things. I just felt bad.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Yeah. But what do you do? There's nothing. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:36Speaker 1: What do you do? What do you do? Guy's got
- 10:38Speaker 1: a broken leg. You broke his head. Just stay the
- 10:42Speaker 1: fuck away from you and your crew. I mean, at
- 10:46Speaker 1: least you're nice about it and friendly. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:48Speaker 1: It is what it is. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 2: It's such interest because you've trained with Marius, my coaches,
- 10:54Speaker 2: one of my coaches, Marius.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And obviously he says to say hello.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Thomas and I. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:00Speaker 2: He says he's trained with you guys. I think you
- 11:01Speaker 2: guys trained for about four years with Eddie Bravo as well.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I've known him for 20 years. Yeah. Crazy, crazy. Crazy.
- 11:09Speaker 2: And obviously that's a big part of my history now
- 11:11Speaker 2: with them. them two the brothers uh alexis and marius.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Were you at the gym when when lee when lee
- 11:18Speaker 1: murray was no.
- 11:19Speaker 2: No no i was just after yeah yeah luckily but
- 11:24Speaker 2: interestingly though when i was in at the time that
- 11:26Speaker 2: i he was around uh i was still very like
- 11:31Speaker 2: heavily focused on the points fighting kickboxing so but a
- 11:35Speaker 2: friend of mine was training at shoot and he was
- 11:38Speaker 2: like you need to come and train with these guys
- 11:40Speaker 2: like these guys are serious and But for me, MMA
- 11:42Speaker 2: was just never going to be a thing that I'd
- 11:44Speaker 2: ever see myself in.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Really?
- 11:46Speaker 2: I've always seen it as, I guess like your average
- 11:50Speaker 2: fan back in the day and some fans now, of like, ah,
- 11:53Speaker 2: it's brutal, man.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:54Speaker 2: And again, I'm a points fighter. I don't see myself
- 11:57Speaker 2: being good enough or tough enough to fight these guys.
- 12:01Speaker 1: What changed?
- 12:05Speaker 2: Obviously, I had a successful career in the kickboxing, but
- 12:08Speaker 2: I didn't really go anywhere. It's like you're fighting the
- 12:11Speaker 2: same people. The amount of times me and Raymond have fought,
- 12:14Speaker 2: and we were some of the top two guys. We're
- 12:17Speaker 2: both in the competition.
- 12:20Speaker 1: We both walk in the room. Everyone's like, oh, my God,
- 12:22Speaker 1: are these guys going to fight? We were the guys.
- 12:25Speaker 2: But I'm fighting the same people, and it's just like everything.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Everyone hoping that you're going to lose or your fans
- 12:31Speaker 2: are kind of like supporting you. And then I come
- 12:33Speaker 2: back to reality, come off a plane, I've traveled, I've
- 12:36Speaker 2: fought all. you know, the whole week or whatever, won
- 12:40Speaker 2: a world title and I've come back home and nothing.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Yeah. I come back home.
- 12:45Speaker 2: To just me being myself, just me being me, which
- 12:49Speaker 2: I'm okay with. But there's no recognition. There was no sponsorship.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I paid to do everything and I loved it. And
- 12:58Speaker 2: if I could choose the route again, I'd still do
- 13:00Speaker 2: it because I absolutely loved it. But there comes a point,
- 13:03Speaker 2: I'm getting older and this comes a point where I
- 13:05Speaker 2: have to, and I'm now starting to, But at the time,
- 13:08Speaker 2: I'm a kid. But now it's getting to the point
- 13:10Speaker 2: where I have to work. And so now it's like,
- 13:13Speaker 2: I can't do this forever. But at the same time,
- 13:16Speaker 2: I know I want to compete for a living. I
- 13:20Speaker 2: just didn't know what, in what. So then I said
- 13:24Speaker 2: to myself, okay, cool.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Let me.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I need to take a step away from this. I
- 13:29Speaker 2: know while I'm in this, this will be a distraction.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I'm not going to be able to focus on things
- 13:34Speaker 2: because another competition that I'm going to want to win
- 13:36Speaker 2: is going to come up and it's going to turn
- 13:37Speaker 2: my attention. So I said, look, I'm going to, I
- 13:39Speaker 2: said to everyone, I'm retired. I thought, let me say
- 13:41Speaker 2: it to as many people as possible. So then it's
- 13:44Speaker 2: hard for me to turn back on it. So I'm
- 13:46Speaker 2: just like, yeah, I'm okay. Yeah, I'm retiring now.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Not fine again. Yeah, this is my last fight. And
- 13:51Speaker 1: I said, cool.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Started to go around looking at boxing gyms, looking at,
- 13:58Speaker 2: Full contact kickboxing, looking at MMA gyms. And the first
- 14:02Speaker 2: gym I actually went to was in Miami, Coconut Creek
- 14:06Speaker 2: American Top Team.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Ah. Yeah.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Because my sister used to live in that area because
- 14:13Speaker 2: I got siblings over in America as well. So came
- 14:18Speaker 2: out there. And in my head at the time, there's
- 14:21Speaker 2: only few people from the UK that was doing anything
- 14:24Speaker 2: in MMA. So when I was like, maybe I'm going
- 14:26Speaker 2: to try MMA, I was like, obviously I have to
- 14:29Speaker 2: go to America. And I'm lucky enough to have siblings
- 14:31Speaker 2: that live over there. So I'm good. So get to America,
- 14:35Speaker 2: get to American Top Team.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I go in there.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I'm like, this is where I'm going to start. Like
- 14:39Speaker 2: I've met a couple of the coaches and just kind
- 14:40Speaker 2: of just like general chit chat. I didn't tell them
- 14:42Speaker 2: who I was or anything. Just kind of saw the vibe.
- 14:45Speaker 2: The facilities are amazing. I was like, yeah, this is
- 14:48Speaker 2: going to be my new life. And then I get
- 14:51Speaker 2: back to England and a good friend of mine, Marvin Francis,
- 14:54Speaker 2: was like, Just in case, just have a look at
- 14:57Speaker 2: some gyms over here.
- 14:58Speaker 1: You don't know.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Because obviously I've got things to sort out before I
- 15:01Speaker 2: can just make the full move. So while you're doing that,
- 15:04Speaker 2: let's have a look at a couple of gyms. And
- 15:06Speaker 2: we did some research. We went to a couple of
- 15:07Speaker 2: the Gracie gyms, went to a few other gyms that.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I was around.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Then I found London Shoot Fighters. I hadn't done any research.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And at this time, I personally wasn't watching MMA at all.
- 15:18Speaker 2: The only person I knew.
- 15:19Speaker 1: What year is this? It's already been....
- 15:27Speaker 2: I'd have been, what, 24? So, what's that about? It's
- 15:35Speaker 2: over 12, 13 years back. And I was trying to
- 15:41Speaker 2: say the only guys in the UK would have been,
- 15:44Speaker 2: Brad Pickett was fighting.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Solid Fighter.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Solid Fighter. Michael Bisping was fighting. And nobody had achieved
- 15:55Speaker 2: anything Of big quality from there. Everything was in America.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Was Bisping still living in England or had he moved
- 16:03Speaker 1: to America? I think he was still in England. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:07Speaker 2: But again, I was only learning it as I got
- 16:10Speaker 2: more into it. But initially, I just thought... I made
- 16:13Speaker 2: the decision without actually researching anything, which is very much
- 16:17Speaker 2: like me.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I'll just jump in headfirst. Figure it out. I'll figure
- 16:22Speaker 1: it out afterwards. So... I literally, I said to myself, okay, cool.
- 16:28Speaker 1: I've got to London.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Shoot fighters. And the only person I knew was Chuck Liddell.
- 16:35Speaker 2: That's I've actually seen. And I just was like, this
- 16:37Speaker 2: guy was just knocking people out. I was like, that's,
- 16:39Speaker 2: I could relate to that. I was like, he's a striker.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Everything else. I didn't really care for. I was typical fan.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Like when they got on the floor, I was like,
- 16:50Speaker 2: get stand up, stand them up. So I've never been
- 16:54Speaker 2: to a show, anything, but, he's a guy that I
- 16:58Speaker 2: like watching and I made a decision that I want
- 17:00Speaker 2: to do it.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Cool.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Started in London Shoot Fighters and for some reason, the
- 17:06Speaker 2: guys there, I don't know, because I've had good coaching
- 17:13Speaker 2: in my upbringing, so I feel like I can hear sense.
- 17:16Speaker 2: When I've gone to a place, I'm hearing how they're
- 17:18Speaker 2: coaching and what they're saying and I'm like, it just
- 17:20Speaker 2: makes sense to me. I was like, cool, I'm going
- 17:22Speaker 2: to start here. I still want to go to America,
- 17:24Speaker 2: but I'll start here for now And then just see
- 17:26Speaker 2: where it goes. And I just fell in love with
- 17:28Speaker 2: the place.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Was that the first time you did any grappling at all?
- 17:31Speaker 1: Any grappling at all. Wow. Didn't do.
- 17:35Speaker 2: All I was doing every day was applauding people because
- 17:39Speaker 2: I was tapping every two seconds.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Every two seconds. Frustrating, right? But I loved it though. Oh. Well,
- 17:49Speaker 1: you have a good mindset. Yeah. It was weird.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Like I kind of enjoyed the fact that like I'm
- 17:52Speaker 2: looking at this guy like if I saw you on
- 17:54Speaker 2: the street in my head.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Right. I'm destroying you. Yeah.
- 17:59Speaker 2: But this guy just twisted me up into a pretzel.
- 18:01Speaker 1: It's a humiliating feeling.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Oh, so humiliating. But I, again, I crave, I, if
- 18:06Speaker 2: I go back to the point side from about like you,
- 18:10Speaker 2: you met my brother outside, uh, him, he's my, he's
- 18:15Speaker 2: the oldest, uh, of my siblings, uh, sort of my,
- 18:19Speaker 2: the boys.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Uh, my sister's the oldest and it's my brother.
- 18:22Speaker 2: I've got two other brothers than me. And at the time,
- 18:25Speaker 2: We were fighting around, but they were winning everything. I
- 18:30Speaker 2: used to get my ass kicked everywhere we went. And
- 18:33Speaker 2: this is every single weekend.

- 19:47Speaker 2: Like he was for me he was the more talented
- 19:49Speaker 2: one but I mean like every single weekend we're driving
- 19:53Speaker 2: to Birmingham, to Manchester, to Scotland. We did trips everywhere.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Like my dad started a gym and he was going
- 20:00Speaker 2: around everywhere. And every weekend, it's like three hours that way,
- 20:06Speaker 2: four hours this way, this way. coming back and I'm
- 20:09Speaker 2: just kind of boss lip and they're just, the medals
- 20:12Speaker 2: are just like, like they've got all the medals and
- 20:15Speaker 2: they're talking about how they spin kick some guy and
- 20:17Speaker 2: they did this. And I'm just like, yeah, yeah, cool,
- 20:19Speaker 2: cool story. And I got destroyed for four or five years.
- 20:27Speaker 2: And when I got to a qualifiers, uh, is in Birmingham, uh,
- 20:36Speaker 2: It was an IASCA qualifiers and I managed to win that,
- 20:41Speaker 2: which that in itself was success for me. Like I'm like,
- 20:43Speaker 2: oh man, I qualified to go to the world championships.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I've already done well. Everyone else was, they were supposed
- 20:51Speaker 2: to do it. Like they're good enough to have the
- 20:53Speaker 2: expectation of themselves. So then I get to the world
- 20:56Speaker 2: championships and the way they seed fighters in the US
- 20:59Speaker 2: was very different to the UK at the time. So
- 21:03Speaker 2: I had one fight, another fight, another fight and I'm winning.
- 21:07Speaker 1: And I'm like happy.
- 21:07Speaker 2: I'm like, I must be in like the finals already.
- 21:09Speaker 2: And then they're like, okay, bring the Cedars fighters in.
- 21:11Speaker 2: And then it's like a shitload of fighters join your.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Mat.
- 21:16Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh. My dad would tell me, he's like, yeah,
- 21:19Speaker 2: I think you're in the semis. I think you're in
- 21:22Speaker 2: the quarters. And then he was like, bro, just keep fighting.
- 21:25Speaker 1: He couldn't work out.
- 21:26Speaker 2: I don't know. Seriously, I genuinely don't remember. I just
- 21:31Speaker 2: remember just feeling tired and I didn't understand why this
- 21:34Speaker 2: was still going on because in the competitions, Three, four fights,
- 21:37Speaker 2: you're in a final. And I was at least 10
- 21:41Speaker 2: fights deep and still felt like I was fighting.
- 21:44Speaker 1: All in a day? In a day. Wow.
- 21:46Speaker 2: So there's, again, the IASCA World Champ is in Orlando, Florida.
- 21:51Speaker 2: And it was, at the time, the biggest points kickboxing competition.
- 21:56Speaker 2: So there's thousands and thousands of competitors, kids, adults, doing forms, doing,
- 22:02Speaker 2: you know, katters and all this stuff. And then you
- 22:05Speaker 2: had the points fighting competition. the light contact fighting and
- 22:08Speaker 2: that was it. And yeah, it just, all day. And
- 22:13Speaker 2: then it literally got to this, like, okay, I won
- 22:15Speaker 2: a fight and the guy was like, okay, you're in
- 22:16Speaker 2: the final next. The referee said that to me and
- 22:18Speaker 2: I was like, oh, like, I can't believe I'm in
- 22:20Speaker 2: the final. And this guy was very good. I can't
- 22:24Speaker 2: remember his name.
- 22:24Speaker 1: He was young.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I was, I think it was like 12 or 11
- 22:27Speaker 2: at the time. And I won the fight. I just
- 22:31Speaker 2: collapsed to my, like, my back. I was just like,
- 22:33Speaker 2: oh my God, everyone ran in there because again, Nobody
- 22:36Speaker 2: expected that of me. And I remember going in there,
- 22:38Speaker 2: the trophy itself was six feet tall. And in my head,
- 22:42Speaker 2: I was like, I just want one in my house.
- 22:45Speaker 2: And I managed to win that. But something, that competition clicked.
- 22:50Speaker 2: So all the times I was getting beaten up, all
- 22:52Speaker 2: the competitions I was getting destroyed at, and I wasn't
- 22:55Speaker 2: even like close.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I was getting destroyed.
- 22:58Speaker 2: I won this competition and I went back home and
- 23:01Speaker 2: every person I used to get destroyed by, I was
- 23:05Speaker 2: smoke in them like something was different instantaneously there's a
- 23:10Speaker 2: weird shift that just went click wow and all the
- 23:13Speaker 2: kicks that would i'd walk into face first i was
- 23:16Speaker 2: like oh actually i.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Can do this i was like wow you entered into
- 23:20Speaker 1: the matrix.
- 23:20Speaker 2: I'd literally i just i to the point to the
- 23:23Speaker 2: point where so when i went back home was like
- 23:25Speaker 2: 12 and for the year of that circuit i didn't
- 23:29Speaker 2: lose a fight And this is from getting whooped. That's crazy.
- 23:34Speaker 2: And I'm fighting all the same guys that I grew
- 23:36Speaker 2: up with. And they must have been like, what the hell?
- 23:37Speaker 1: Yeah, what the hell's going on here?
- 23:39Speaker 2: Then when I was 13, I asked my dad, I
- 23:43Speaker 2: was like, can I please fight in the seniors? And
- 23:47Speaker 2: the seniors are 18 plus. And he was like, and
- 23:50Speaker 2: he said it to me, he said it to me
- 23:51Speaker 2: later on. He was like, as a coach, I knew
- 23:54Speaker 2: you could. As your dad, I was like, hell no.
- 23:59Speaker 2: And I begged him.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Every competition we got, I was like, please, can I
- 24:01Speaker 1: fight in the seniors? Please.
- 24:02Speaker 2: And there was a big British Championship competition.
- 24:06Speaker 1: And I begged. I was like, please.
- 24:09Speaker 2: He was like, you can do this one. And again,
- 24:13Speaker 2: I don't think he... Remember, these guys are 18 plus,
- 24:15Speaker 2: but all different sizes as well.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I don't think.
- 24:19Speaker 2: He knew I'd do well, but not as well as
- 24:21Speaker 2: I did. So I won my senior division for my weight. Um,
- 24:27Speaker 2: and like I said, these are big men, but the
- 24:30Speaker 2: problem is whoever, when you win in this competition specifically,
- 24:33Speaker 2: when you win your section, you go into the grand championships.
- 24:38Speaker 2: And I'm like, dad, you gotta let me go. He's like, no, that's,
- 24:42Speaker 2: this is different now. Cause they're, they're the winners of
- 24:44Speaker 2: their division. This is, that was your weight division. Now
- 24:48Speaker 2: these guys are the winners of their own weight.
- 24:50Speaker 1: You can't do this.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I begged him and I beat everybody and got.
- 24:56Speaker 1: To the final.
- 24:57Speaker 2: And the final was really, really close. And I felt
- 24:59Speaker 2: like I got robbed. And even my dad was like,
- 25:02Speaker 2: he could never tell me no after that. Because I
- 25:04Speaker 2: destroyed some of the best fighters in the.
- 25:08Speaker 1: UK at the time. Do you think it was a
- 25:10Speaker 1: confidence thing of having gone through that grueling tournament and
- 25:14Speaker 1: proving that you could do it and now you didn't
- 25:16Speaker 1: have doubts in your mind anymore? Or was it you
- 25:19Speaker 1: had just seen so many different high levels of competition
- 25:22Speaker 1: that maybe your own expectations had risen? What was it
- 25:26Speaker 1: that made that? instantaneous shift because it's one thing to
- 25:29Speaker 1: go and compete and do really well all of a sudden.
- 25:32Speaker 1: And like now I'm competing, but then you went and
- 25:34Speaker 1: you were doing it against people that were normally beating
- 25:37Speaker 1: you and you're fucking them up. That's, that's like a
- 25:42Speaker 1: 50% shift. That's a giant shift.
- 25:44Speaker 2: I would say one thing, obviously I hated losing as
- 25:48Speaker 2: anybody would, especially as a kid. Um, and We also,
- 25:54Speaker 2: and I think it's for all of us, we wasn't allowed.
- 25:56Speaker 2: So a lot of the kids would fight first and
- 25:57Speaker 2: then the seniors would fight. But because we all traveled
- 26:00Speaker 2: down together, we stayed the whole competition until the seniors
- 26:03Speaker 2: were finished so we can drive back. A lot of
- 26:05Speaker 2: the other kids were messing around when, obviously, guys that
- 26:09Speaker 2: I've spent, I've known since I was eight years old
- 26:11Speaker 2: that I'm still good friends with now because we were
- 26:13Speaker 2: the kids playing with each other afterwards, just being all cool.
- 26:17Speaker 2: But my dad was like, no, no, no, you represent me.
- 26:20Speaker 2: You sit down and watch. so as much as we
- 26:24Speaker 2: could play a little bit like when he wasn't looking
- 26:26Speaker 2: but we had to try and get back to the
- 26:28Speaker 2: mat to make sure we were watching people and I
- 26:30Speaker 2: feel like I'm a visual learner and I feel like
- 26:34Speaker 2: that helped me become that visual learner as much as
- 26:36Speaker 2: I was getting my ass kicked I was also spending
- 26:39Speaker 2: time watching amazing athletes.
- 26:41Speaker 1: At the time I think it's an important thing to
- 26:44Speaker 1: mention that at that time there wasn't video readily available
- 26:48Speaker 1: like there is today like I remember the first time
- 26:51Speaker 1: I went to the Taekwondo World Cup. It was in
- 26:54Speaker 1: Colorado Springs in 2000. I mean, not 2000, 1980. I
- 26:59Speaker 1: think it was 86. And the first time I went,
- 27:03Speaker 1: I immediately got better just by seeing them, just by
- 27:07Speaker 1: seeing everybody. I just went as a spectator. Yeah. I
- 27:10Speaker 1: hadn't beaten anybody to qualify for the nationals. So when
- 27:14Speaker 1: I went there, the whole experience was just absorption. Yeah.
- 27:18Speaker 1: And I came back, and I was much better. Much better.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I'd never seen those guys live, but my expectations for competition,
- 27:25Speaker 1: my expectations for movement and speed, everything had risen. And
- 27:28Speaker 1: at the time, I was 18. So it was just,
- 27:31Speaker 1: when you're 18, your brain just, you just absorb. You
- 27:33Speaker 1: just absorb.
- 27:34Speaker 2: And I think even more so when you're younger.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Yes. Oh, yeah, when you're a little kid.
- 27:38Speaker 2: And I, like, my first competition, I was five years old.
- 27:41Speaker 1: So.
- 27:43Speaker 2: that is just many years again being up.
- 27:45Speaker 1: That's incredible though because your body develops with that. I
- 27:49Speaker 1: started a little late. I started karate when I was
- 27:51Speaker 1: 14 and then wrestling and Taekwondo when I was 15.
- 27:55Speaker 1: But I wished I started earlier because I was with
- 27:58Speaker 1: these guys that were younger and their little bodies had
- 28:00Speaker 1: like grown stretching and they'd grown punching and kicking. Like
- 28:04Speaker 1: you develop into that.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Funny you say that. That's where my name came from.
- 28:10Speaker 2: So Venom came from when I was And the only
- 28:16Speaker 2: kids that was in my dad's class at the time, mainly,
- 28:19Speaker 2: there were a few others, because at the time we did,
- 28:22Speaker 2: it was basically one class. He didn't really separate the
- 28:24Speaker 2: kids and adults. It was just one class. So I'm
- 28:27Speaker 2: trying my best, throwing everything in to hit adults. They're
- 28:31Speaker 2: not moving, but I'm trying my best to just get
- 28:34Speaker 2: some kind of reaction. And then when I started hitting
- 28:38Speaker 2: people my own size, even though I was losing, because
- 28:40Speaker 2: they were like, obviously I was tall for my age
- 28:43Speaker 2: as well. So I was fighting kids slightly more naturally
- 28:46Speaker 2: developed than me, but I had a, had a whack
- 28:49Speaker 2: on me.
- 28:49Speaker 1: That's a great way to put it. You know what
- 28:51Speaker 1: I mean?
- 28:52Speaker 2: Like, even though I, I, you know, I wasn't beating
- 28:54Speaker 2: these guys. These guys were just way too fast for me,
- 28:56Speaker 2: but when I hit them, they felt it. And it
- 29:00Speaker 2: was one of my, again, Marvin was literally just like, Hey,
- 29:02Speaker 2: you got some venom in you, man. And we was
- 29:05Speaker 2: very into like Kung Fu movies back in the day.
- 29:08Speaker 2: And then, and I was very, um, creative mind like
- 29:11Speaker 2: I love just just even with my martial arts I
- 29:14Speaker 2: learned a job like this and now I have to
- 29:15Speaker 2: add something oh I can't do things conventional I've never
- 29:19Speaker 2: never liked to do it if there's a everyone's walking
- 29:21Speaker 2: that way like I want to see what's over there
- 29:23Speaker 2: like I just I don't know what is wrong I
- 29:24Speaker 2: don't know what's wrong with me but what's right with
- 29:26Speaker 2: you what's right with me but I just got that
- 29:28Speaker 2: like I was curious and creative and so there's a
- 29:33Speaker 2: film called the five deadly venoms like old school old
- 29:36Speaker 2: school kung fu classic and he would be like yeah
- 29:39Speaker 2: yeah deadly venoms let's make a move for each like
- 29:43Speaker 2: uh thing because he'd be like scorpion or toad and
- 29:45Speaker 2: i would make up weird moves and try to add
- 29:47Speaker 2: it into and that was always my thing i'd see
- 29:49Speaker 2: something on the in the movies and i'm like i'm
- 29:51Speaker 2: gonna try it in there in there this is all
- 29:53Speaker 2: while i'm still getting beaten up by the way as
- 29:55Speaker 2: well but that never left me so even when i
- 29:58Speaker 2: started beating all these people now, I'm doing it with
- 30:02Speaker 2: the style and flair of like, what.
- 30:04Speaker 1: More can I do? You know what I mean? So, yeah. Well,
- 30:08Speaker 1: it's so perfect for martial arts for you, for MMA,
- 30:12Speaker 1: because a lot of MMA is pattern recognition. You get
- 30:16Speaker 1: a custom technique. to certain types of movements. I know
- 30:20Speaker 1: this guy's going to do this. The calf kick's going
- 30:21Speaker 1: to be available. I'm going to feint with this and
- 30:23Speaker 1: I'm going to throw that. I'm going to shoot that
- 30:24Speaker 1: double here because I know he's going to come with
- 30:26Speaker 1: the overhand right. All these patterns, you don't have normal patterns.
- 30:30Speaker 1: So you're moving around, your hands are down, you're sideways.
- 30:34Speaker 1: And they have to make up new patterns as they
- 30:35Speaker 1: go along. So they have to think. It's such an advantage.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and I always tell people that the first time
- 30:42Speaker 2: they're actually really going to experience this style is on
- 30:46Speaker 2: the night. And you have to figure it out on
- 30:48Speaker 2: the night.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Because there's not enough guys that have what you can
- 30:52Speaker 1: do that also compete in MMA. There might be five
- 30:56Speaker 1: or six in the whole world, which is nuts. It's
- 31:00Speaker 1: kind of nuts, man. I had been saying this for decades.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I'm like, this is the one thing that's missing. And
- 31:08Speaker 1: then when you came over, I was like, Steve, this
- 31:11Speaker 1: is what I'm saying. This is crazy. You can't even
- 31:13Speaker 1: hit him. It's weird, though. It's a blessing and a curse.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Uh, blessing, obviously being able, being, having the advantages of
- 31:21Speaker 2: a fight, but sparring headache earlier, a lot of people
- 31:27Speaker 2: wanted to kind of like, let me see what this
- 31:28Speaker 2: is about. Then word spreads quite quickly. And I struggle
- 31:34Speaker 2: with sparring. I think starting to come back now, people
- 31:37Speaker 2: are a bit more willing.
- 31:38Speaker 1: But I struggled with sparring. You just couldn't get sparring.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Couldn't get sparring because also, and I kind of see
- 31:43Speaker 2: it from other people's point of view. It's like, well, why,
- 31:45Speaker 2: I'm not going to fight anybody like that. So why, why,
- 31:48Speaker 2: why am I coming over?
- 31:49Speaker 1: Yeah, but if you saw that, if you, with your mindset,
- 31:53Speaker 1: you would be like, I got to figure out what
- 31:54Speaker 1: the fuck he's doing. 100%.
- 31:56Speaker 2: And my teammates, they're forced to.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:58Speaker 2: And a lot of them, they even say like, I'd
- 32:00Speaker 2: spar you and then I go spar someone else and
- 32:02Speaker 2: they feel so slow because I'm, when I'm with you,
- 32:05Speaker 2: my eyes are like this. I'm forced to be like,
- 32:08Speaker 2: Ultra alert. And then I go somewhere in front of
- 32:10Speaker 2: a bunch of others.
- 32:12Speaker 1: That's the thing too, it's exhausting. It's exhausting. Your style's
- 32:16Speaker 1: exhausting because you always have to be at high alert.
- 32:19Speaker 1: There's no moment, because there's so many times where you've
- 32:22Speaker 1: done like, like a shift in rhythm and it looks
- 32:26Speaker 1: like you're slowing down and then you explode and crack people.
- 32:30Speaker 1: And you've done that so successfully so many times that
- 32:32Speaker 1: if they've watched any tape, they know there's no moments
- 32:36Speaker 1: where you could catch your breath. There's no moments. And
- 32:38Speaker 1: you're always putting pressure on people. You're always fainting. In
- 32:41Speaker 1: the feints alone. See, people don't even know. When you're
- 32:44Speaker 1: standing there, it looks like you're just standing there. But
- 32:46Speaker 1: you're standing there and a guy's fainting and you never
- 32:48Speaker 1: know when he's going to actually launch. And your whole
- 32:52Speaker 1: body is constantly tense. You can't breathe. Tense.
- 32:55Speaker 2: That's just their energy bar just doing this without anything happening.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Without anything. Without any kicks landing. No punch.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Which is actually why I'm actually a big fan of
- 33:04Speaker 2: Tom Aspinall as well.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Because you don't really see that anywhere full stop, but
- 33:08Speaker 2: definitely not in a heavyweight division.
- 33:09Speaker 1: No heavyweight moves like him. No one moves like him.
- 33:12Speaker 1: He moves like a 185er. It's crazy.
- 33:14Speaker 2: It's nuts. With that kind of explosive and that power,
- 33:16Speaker 2: it's crazy.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Crazy speed for a heavyweight. Crazy speed. And I love
- 33:20Speaker 1: to see it. And that's why the Jon Jones thing
- 33:21Speaker 1: was being... Jon is... If not the greatest fighter of
- 33:26Speaker 1: all time. But he's not the fastest guy in the world.
- 33:29Speaker 1: He's just so complete, and his fight IQ is off
- 33:32Speaker 1: the charts. Off the charts. Very well-rounded. Very. And wild.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Opens up his world title fight with Shogun with a
- 33:40Speaker 1: flying knee. Yeah, crazy. Wild. Just believes in himself, goes
- 33:44Speaker 1: for it. Belief, confidence. Yes, goes for it. I thought
- 33:47Speaker 1: that was a complicated matchup for him. It is. Because
- 33:50Speaker 1: that guy's not easy to get to the ground. And Aspinall.
- 33:53Speaker 1: And he's fast as fuck. Yes. And he's big. Yeah.
- 33:57Speaker 1: He's a legit 250 pounds natural. Yeah. You know, no,
- 34:02Speaker 1: he doesn't need anything. There's no way he can make
- 34:05Speaker 1: 205 ever. He's fucking big. Yeah.
- 34:08Speaker 2: I got to train with him and I went down
- 34:10Speaker 2: there and I was like, this guy, he's a tank.
- 34:13Speaker 1: It's a tank. So that's a problem. Yeah. That's a
- 34:15Speaker 1: problem when you're not really a heavyweight. As great as
- 34:18Speaker 1: John is. Yeah. And I think John beats most heavyweights
- 34:20Speaker 1: that have ever existed. Yeah. That guy's a problem. Francis
- 34:25Speaker 1: is another problem. That's another problem. Because you're dealing with
- 34:28Speaker 1: a real 265-pound, solid, natural, grew-up-in-the-sand-minds. Literally. His story is crazy. Crazy.
- 34:40Speaker 1: His story is something else. He told it on the podcast.
- 34:43Speaker 1: He told the whole story of him. Going to Morocco
- 34:46Speaker 1: and getting to Europe. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a movie, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:49Speaker 1: A crazy movie. I'm surprised nobody has jumped on that.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I'm surprised, too. Someone needs to. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's nuts. Yeah,
- 34:55Speaker 1: we'll do it. We'll do it. We'll do it. But
- 34:57Speaker 1: when he was a child working, digging sand in Cameroon.
- 35:01Speaker 1: It's crazy. You know? Incredible. And then you have incredible genetics. Yeah.
- 35:06Speaker 1: And then you have just this fierce mindset from all
- 35:08Speaker 1: the shit that guy's been through. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That
- 35:12Speaker 1: was another one. So there was two fights that I
- 35:14Speaker 1: was really interested in with John at heavyweight. Once he
- 35:16Speaker 1: won the title, I was like, God, bring back Francis, please.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I just don't see that happening. Sort out your difference.
- 35:22Speaker 1: I wish I was running shit. Me and him get
- 35:26Speaker 1: along great. I just feel like, I don't know, I
- 35:29Speaker 1: think sometimes it's the executives and the fighters. Dana generally
- 35:34Speaker 1: gets along with people, like most fighters he gets along with,
- 35:38Speaker 1: but him and Francis... It didn't work. I love the guy.
- 35:42Speaker 2: I've never had the privilege of meeting him, but he
- 35:46Speaker 2: just seems very sweet, like a big friendly.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Giant outside of the cage. Yeah, exactly. Big friendly giant.
- 35:51Speaker 1: This episode is brought to you by The Farmer's Dog.

- 37:01Speaker 1: is for new customers only. He's a fucking great guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:05Speaker 1: I'm only saying from my experience with him. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:07Speaker 1: But as a fighter, just fucking make it happen. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Keep him around. You got to jam. That's more important.
- 37:14Speaker 1: it's extraordinary gem yeah and you want to talk about
- 37:18Speaker 1: sellability you want to talk about marketability what's more marketable
- 37:22Speaker 1: than a giant man who destroys everyone yeah he's the
- 37:25Speaker 1: guy yeah so true drove me nuts i know i
- 37:29Speaker 1: think everybody and i think that's added to people's frustrations
- 37:34Speaker 1: with the Tom Aspinall fight that happened then after as well. Well,
- 37:37Speaker 1: that was not on the UFC's side or on Tom's side.
- 37:41Speaker 1: That was all John. Look, John's a wizard. He knows
- 37:44Speaker 1: how to play all games. And one of the games
- 37:46Speaker 1: he plays, I'm retiring. No, I'm back. Oh, now I'm
- 37:49Speaker 1: hunting after you. It doesn't matter to him. He's going
- 37:51Speaker 1: to get the same amount of money. He's still John Jones. Like,
- 37:54Speaker 1: it's all... It's all mind-fuckery. Like, keep you guessing. And meanwhile,
- 37:58Speaker 1: John's deadlifting every day. You know what I mean? And partying.
- 38:02Speaker 1: He's just so wild. But it's like, that fight would
- 38:05Speaker 1: have been amazing to see. But to me, the real fight.
- 38:07Speaker 2: So that means it probably can still happen, though.
- 38:09Speaker 1: I hope so. I genuinely hope so. You know they
- 38:12Speaker 1: were talking about doing it at the White House? Yeah, yeah.
- 38:14Speaker 1: And Dana said that. Dana's like, I can't trust John
- 38:16Speaker 1: to show up and be fine. Which is fair, which
- 38:18Speaker 1: is fair. So you gotta say, there's been a few
- 38:20Speaker 1: times where things went awry. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fair enough. However.
- 38:25Speaker 1: It would be great. Do it on a card where
- 38:27Speaker 1: you have 12 other fights. That's what I say. Who
- 38:29Speaker 1: gives a fuck? Let's see if it happens. If it
- 38:31Speaker 1: doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. That's true. I would be like,
- 38:34Speaker 1: let's go crazy. Let's fucking go all in.
- 38:36Speaker 2: I guess what would happen is that fight overshadows many fights.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Uh-huh.
- 38:41Speaker 2: So if it doesn't happen, even though the fights are
- 38:44Speaker 2: amazing still, people are like, ah.
- 38:47Speaker 1: It does, but so what? Yeah. I mean, you know,
- 38:49Speaker 1: you get. I don't know who you would do. Ilya
- 38:51Speaker 1: Toporia versus Justin Gaethje or something like that. Something crazy
- 38:55Speaker 1: like that. You'd have a few other fights. It depends
- 38:57Speaker 1: on what happens this weekend with Pereira and Akhlaev. It
- 39:00Speaker 1: depends on what happens with Murab and Corey Sanhagen. Those
- 39:03Speaker 1: are two very complicated fights. Beast. Yeah, very good fights.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Murab is a beast, man. Beast. He's such a beast. Dude,
- 39:10Speaker 1: he was talking to, I forgot who he was talking to.
- 39:12Speaker 1: He did an interview. Oh, he was on Mighty Mouse's podcast.
- 39:15Speaker 1: No sauna. No sauna. No cold plunge, no stretching. Doesn't
- 39:19Speaker 1: do any of that. Doesn't do any of that. Just
- 39:21Speaker 1: no warmup. Shows up. I just show up, start to train.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Just shows up. Shows up and fucking hits the gas.
- 39:29Speaker 1: He stays up to 1, 2 o'clock in the morning. Just.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Just like his whole routine is totally contrary to everything
- 39:37Speaker 1: that you've heard before. And this is how he weight cuts.
- 39:40Speaker 1: I stop eating. He just stops eating. He stops eating
- 39:43Speaker 1: on Tuesday.
- 39:46Speaker 2: He just stops eating, stops drinking.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Water, keeps working out. The man's mind is a giant
- 39:55Speaker 1: factor that I think a lot of people are looking
- 39:57Speaker 1: at as cardio, which is an insane weapon. But the
- 40:00Speaker 1: man's mind, the toughness, the mental toughness, that is Fort Knox.
- 40:04Speaker 1: You ain't getting in there. You ain't getting in there.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Remember that time, who was it? He was mounted. I
- 40:10Speaker 1: forget who got him. But he got him in a
- 40:11Speaker 1: mounted guillotine and he didn't, I think it might have
- 40:13Speaker 1: been Ricky Simone. Or was it somebody else had him,
- 40:17Speaker 1: and he got out, and then he won the fight.
- 40:19Speaker 1: But he was being choked unconscious for like two minutes. Yeah,
- 40:23Speaker 1: and he's like, yeah. And he's like kicking his legs
- 40:25Speaker 1: and moving around. He's like, there's no quitting that guy.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Fucking zero quitting. You have to put him out. Zero quits.
- 40:31Speaker 1: In the Marlon Marais fight, he was basically out on
- 40:33Speaker 1: his feet in the first round. And just came back
- 40:36Speaker 1: and stopped him. He's a monster. He's a beast. He's
- 40:38Speaker 1: a beast. And he keeps getting better. I mean, you
- 40:42Speaker 1: feel like, oh, a guy like that is so good.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Look how good he is. He's better than everybody. No, no, no, no, no.
- 40:46Speaker 1: He's still getting better. He's not done. He's a project.
- 40:51Speaker 1: He's like, what can the human mind force the human
- 40:54Speaker 1: body to do? And how young is he now? He's
- 40:57Speaker 1: like 34, I believe, which is in that light weight class.
- 41:00Speaker 1: It's a little bit more of a problem in the
- 41:02Speaker 1: heavier weight classes, but I don't see any slope. Like
- 41:04Speaker 1: you said, his mind is... His mind is a fucking
- 41:07Speaker 1: steel trap.
- 41:08Speaker 2: But it's funny you say that because I don't really
- 41:10Speaker 2: have structure either. So the weight cut I do, but
- 41:15Speaker 2: that's because I came in with no understanding of weight
- 41:18Speaker 2: cut and London Street was like, you do this.
- 41:20Speaker 1: You look so big for 170. How the fuck did
- 41:23Speaker 1: you do that? How much are you cutting when you
- 41:24Speaker 1: went to 170? So even like now, I'm massive now. Yeah,
- 41:28Speaker 1: you look like, let me guess, 220? What do you
- 41:31Speaker 1: weigh right now? Yeah, about 215. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Because
- 41:35Speaker 1: I was going to do it in KG, so yeah. Right, okay.
- 41:38Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, yeah. We never adopted that. So stupid.
- 41:42Speaker 1: It's a way better system.
- 41:44Speaker 2: But yeah, it's, but I've never struggled to get down though.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Because again, I was just told, I guess it's ignorance
- 41:51Speaker 2: as well, but I was.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Just told to do these things. And it's like, okay,
- 41:54Speaker 1: you do it. When you start, like say you get
- 41:57Speaker 1: a call from the UFC. Six to eight weeks out. Okay.
- 42:01Speaker 1: So you're not going to accept any two-week fights?
- 42:03Speaker 2: No. Well, it depends on the fight. And it depends
- 42:06Speaker 2: on where I'm always training.
- 42:07Speaker 1: But middleweight, maybe you would. Middleweight, yeah. You have taken
- 42:10Speaker 1: some short notice fights.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Yeah, for middleweight, which was the first one or the
- 42:14Speaker 2: second one I did. The last fight, maybe. But I
- 42:20Speaker 2: would take short notice fights depending on where I am.
- 42:23Speaker 1: In training. In training.
- 42:24Speaker 2: But even, I just like to have a rough idea, right?
- 42:26Speaker 2: Even right now, it's like trying to get, and I'm like,
- 42:28Speaker 2: I'm bugging people. Because I've come from a circuit where
- 42:32Speaker 2: we fight weekends.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Right. Every weekend we're somewhere. And it keeps you sharp. Yeah.
- 42:37Speaker 2: And then, this is probably the most frustrating thing for me. Obviously,
- 42:41Speaker 2: starting in the Bellator, and you're training.
- 42:44Speaker 1: All the time.
- 42:44Speaker 2: And then you have a fight. And then you're training,
- 42:46Speaker 2: and I'm just like, and a lot of my fights,
- 42:48Speaker 2: I don't take too much damage.
- 42:51Speaker 1: So I'm like, I'm ready.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Now, like, give me a week off and I can
- 42:55Speaker 2: come back. And then it's months and months. I'm like,
- 42:57Speaker 2: who am I fighting? Who's this?
- 42:59Speaker 1: The problem is you're a hard sell. Yeah. You know,
- 43:02Speaker 1: when people get a call. Yeah.
- 43:06Speaker 2: It's a flat-footed dude.
- 43:08Speaker 1: They're like, shit, I'm going to have to learn how
- 43:10Speaker 1: to dance in six weeks. Fuck. And that's the thing.
- 43:13Speaker 1: So I'm here.
- 43:13Speaker 2: And I assumed wrongly that when I get to the UFC,
- 43:18Speaker 2: that is going to disperse. Everyone's going to be gunning
- 43:22Speaker 2: for me. Like, yeah, I'm going to show everybody that
- 43:24Speaker 2: this guy is a can. He only fought people that
- 43:28Speaker 2: weren't his level. It's still the same. I think, and
- 43:32Speaker 2: obviously the more I fight, the less people are putting
- 43:34Speaker 2: their hands up. I think even Whittaker said, which I respect,
- 43:36Speaker 2: to be fair. He came out, I don't even know, wait,
- 43:39Speaker 2: somebody sent me something, but he had said, like, yeah,
- 43:40Speaker 2: I wouldn't be interested in making that fight.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Yeah. At this point in his career, that's just a
- 43:45Speaker 1: setback waiting to happen. Yeah, it's not. And his style
- 43:48Speaker 1: is very similar. Exactly, yeah.
- 43:50Speaker 2: I'm a massive fan of his as well. Like, I
- 43:52Speaker 2: love his, obviously, he can tie in the wrestling way better.
- 43:56Speaker 2: And just, yeah, I love his style.
- 43:59Speaker 1: I do too. And you've got to realize, like, that guy...
- 44:02Speaker 1: He's been in it for a long time. He had
- 44:06Speaker 1: two fucking wars with Yoel Romero. When Yoel Romero was
- 44:11Speaker 1: made out of metal. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That guy's fine.
- 44:13Speaker 1: He's still fighting. Still. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's 48 years old,
- 44:16Speaker 1: fucking people up, looking like he's 30. I'd swap buddies
- 44:19Speaker 1: with him in a second. Who wouldn't? Bro, when he
- 44:22Speaker 1: was in here, he came in the studio. It was
- 44:24Speaker 1: the most amazing thing because Joey Diaz translated for him.
- 44:27Speaker 1: So it was him and Joey Diaz going back and forth.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Joey's Cuban as well, of course. And so when he
- 44:33Speaker 1: was here, he had to be 230 pounds. His neck
- 44:36Speaker 1: starts at the top of his ears. And one of
- 44:39Speaker 1: the things that he said, man, he was talking about
- 44:41Speaker 1: the Cuban system. He goes, you have to be on
- 44:44Speaker 1: my jean. Because he was talking about the system of
- 44:50Speaker 1: like you get more food if you're at a higher
- 44:52Speaker 1: caliber of athlete. Just to get more food. The athletes, yeah, man.
- 44:57Speaker 1: The athletes that are the lower caliber, they eat twice
- 45:00Speaker 1: a day. In his caliber, he's eaten three times a day.
- 45:04Speaker 1: He's like, so every day, every day they coming for you.
- 45:08Speaker 1: You have to be on my chin. And I was like, oh,
- 45:11Speaker 1: my God. And you get to look in his eyes, man.
- 45:15Speaker 1: That motherfucker is fierce. Bro, we are soft in the West, bro. Oh,
- 45:18Speaker 1: we're so soft in the West. We're so soft in
- 45:20Speaker 1: the West. What the hell is this? I'm not a
- 45:22Speaker 1: fan of communism. I don't believe it. But damn, it
- 45:25Speaker 1: creates a fucking beast. Alexander Carellan. I mean, I don't
- 45:29Speaker 1: know if you get. There's two things you don't get
- 45:30Speaker 1: that with. There's like substances. Yeah. With for sure taking place.
- 45:35Speaker 1: And then there's also. there's a regiment that they have,
- 45:38Speaker 1: both the Cuban system and the Russian system, where they
- 45:41Speaker 1: had figured out the balance between unbelievable hard work, but
- 45:46Speaker 1: technical ability and recovery. They didn't go meathead style. In America,
- 45:51Speaker 1: we went meathead style, and we burnt a lot of
- 45:54Speaker 1: dudes out, but the dudes who survived were just the
- 45:56Speaker 1: killers of the killers. But they probably could have made
- 45:59Speaker 1: more killers like the Russians did if they did it
- 46:01Speaker 1: more technically.
- 46:02Speaker 2: It's the same, so again, Shoots, they've been, okay, they
- 46:06Speaker 2: were the first MMA gym in the UK. I think
- 46:10Speaker 2: like 95, 97, 95.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I got a T-shirt. I got a London Shoe
- 46:13Speaker 1: Fighters T-shirt from 2003. Yeah, crazy. I couldn't find it.
- 46:16Speaker 1: I was looking for it today. Crazy.
- 46:18Speaker 2: So like I said, they've been around. Yeah, I'm going
- 46:20Speaker 2: to tell him.
- 46:20Speaker 1: I'm going to tell him.
- 46:22Speaker 2: They've been around a long time. And obviously they've fought
- 46:25Speaker 2: with every, I think they've fought with every major competition
- 46:28Speaker 2: that's ever been out. They've done boxing with the likes
- 46:31Speaker 2: of like David Haye, Derek Chisora now. Even Dylan White
- 46:35Speaker 2: did a kickboxing fight with them. You know, myself, Lee Murray,
- 46:40Speaker 2: John Hathaway. Even, like, Carlos Romero was the first Czech
- 46:45Speaker 2: guy before Yuri to be in the UFC. That was
- 46:49Speaker 2: them guys. They've done a lot. But they're the meathead style.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Yeah. They are like, yeah, everybody will learn. Anything to
- 46:57Speaker 1: produce Lee Murray. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You got that
- 46:59Speaker 1: guy in your gym. It's a problem. Just the echoes
- 47:02Speaker 1: of that guy's style will permeate through that gym for decades.
- 47:06Speaker 1: That guy's just an angry man. He was an angry man.
- 47:10Speaker 2: But at the same time, you needed somebody, because my
- 47:12Speaker 2: coaches are beasts, you needed that kind of militant force
- 47:17Speaker 2: to be able to manage that and cope with that.
- 47:21Speaker 2: And that's what my coaches, they are. People used to
- 47:25Speaker 2: come to our gym and we're just like, yeah, who's ready?
- 47:28Speaker 2: And if you don't do it, I'll do it myself.
- 47:30Speaker 2: That's one thing I always respected about them. Even with
- 47:32Speaker 2: the machines, the fitness machines that we had to do,
- 47:35Speaker 2: the scores are crazy. I see people in other gyms
- 47:38Speaker 2: posting their scores.
- 47:39Speaker 1: I'm like, is that it?
- 47:40Speaker 2: And they're celebrating it. And I'm like, we're forced to
- 47:42Speaker 2: do this.
- 47:43Speaker 1: The hell is that?
- 47:47Speaker 2: He'd push you, but he'd also do it himself. Like,
- 47:49Speaker 2: he'd jump on a machine, like, vroom, vroom, vroom, versus
- 47:51Speaker 2: a clammer.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:51Speaker 2: And just smoke it. Like, five fights, back to back.
- 47:55Speaker 2: And then running and this and that. And we're doing,
- 47:57Speaker 2: we have to do all of it because he's doing it.
- 47:59Speaker 2: And he's not doing it.
- 48:00Speaker 1: He hasn't got a fight. That's the way you lead. Yeah.
- 48:02Speaker 1: And he led that way. Especially with killers. Exactly. Yeah,
- 48:04Speaker 1: that's the problem. They demand respect. Right. And they have
- 48:07Speaker 1: to know that you're real. Exactly. Yeah. Otherwise, you're just
- 48:10Speaker 1: some pontificator on the sidelines with a fucking clipboard. Exactly.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Fuck off, bitch. Which is more nowadays.
- 48:16Speaker 2: Like I'm seeing a lot of like, and to be fair,
- 48:19Speaker 2: I'm a fan of a lot of these guys, like
- 48:20Speaker 2: the fighting nerds. And again, I'm hearing that they had,
- 48:23Speaker 2: I forget, like a data analyst or something.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Yeah, they did.
- 48:27Speaker 2: And he does like this, you know, he studies this.
- 48:29Speaker 2: And I think that's cool. Like I feel like we
- 48:31Speaker 2: should have like add elements of these things as well.
- 48:34Speaker 2: But obviously I've just grown up by this iron, sharps iron.
- 48:39Speaker 1: It does. It's undeniable. Iron sharpens iron. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:42Speaker 1: You know, there's outliers. There's a guy who will come
- 48:45Speaker 1: out of a gym with nobody and he's a monster.
- 48:47Speaker 1: There's just a few of those guys that exist in
- 48:49Speaker 1: the world. But for the most part, like if you
- 48:51Speaker 1: look at a gym like American Top Team, for example,
- 48:53Speaker 1: look at how many animals have come out of that gym.
- 48:55Speaker 1: So many. Pantoja, who I think does not get the
- 48:59Speaker 1: credit he deserves. I think Pantoja is one of the
- 49:01Speaker 1: greatest ever. Fucking guy's a monster. When that Japanese cat
- 49:05Speaker 1: came over from Rizin and he just like. like ragdolled him,
- 49:09Speaker 1: like he had no business. And then the Kaikara France rematch,
- 49:14Speaker 1: like you see the difference between when they first fought
- 49:16Speaker 1: and now the difference between like a dominant all time
- 49:19Speaker 1: world champion. People like when he's on a card, like
- 49:24Speaker 1: people don't freak out. I'm like, God damn it. Just
- 49:26Speaker 1: because he's 125 pounds, get that shit out of your head.
- 49:29Speaker 1: You're watching one of the greatest ever. But that's the thing.
- 49:31Speaker 2: It's the marketability of people. This is what I knew
- 49:36Speaker 2: I had to get right as well.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 49:38Speaker 2: And a lot of, I say that to my teammates
- 49:40Speaker 2: as well. I'm like, do you know how you're going
- 49:42Speaker 2: to market yourself? And they're like, no, no, just, you know,
- 49:43Speaker 2: if I beat people up, it's like, it doesn't always just,
- 49:46Speaker 2: unfortunately it should, but it doesn't, that's not what's going
- 49:49Speaker 2: to get you. If I have to, as a promotion
- 49:55Speaker 2: owner and the person managing everything, I'm either going to
- 49:57Speaker 2: pick you that's beating everybody, but nobody cares about, or
- 50:00Speaker 2: this guy that's, you know, it's pretty decent, but everyone's
- 50:02Speaker 2: making noise about going to pick that guy. So you
- 50:05Speaker 2: need to be able to market yourself. And I'd, I
- 50:08Speaker 2: knew that from the jump, and this is before really
- 50:11Speaker 2: social media was massive, massive is a thing. But I
- 50:16Speaker 2: said to myself, okay, I need to look in, how
- 50:19Speaker 2: am I gonna market myself? Because we don't have that
- 50:20Speaker 2: much time, like on the mic. The interviews at the time,
- 50:26Speaker 2: I don't feel like people got the recognition. People just
- 50:28Speaker 2: cared about the fight. They just wanted to watch the fight.
- 50:29Speaker 2: They didn't care what you said beforehand, unless you're arguing
- 50:32Speaker 2: or shouting, you know, there's beef.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Unless you grab that mic and go crazy. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:37Speaker 1: you got to go crazy. Chael Sonnen was the first
- 50:39Speaker 1: guy to figure that out. Oh, he's the best. Yeah,
- 50:40Speaker 1: he was. He figured it out before anybody. He's the best. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck. He's the best fighter. But
- 50:48Speaker 1: he's still good. This is why he's on the mic now. Yes,
- 50:50Speaker 1: but it was perfect. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was perfect.
- 50:53Speaker 1: But there was balance with that. He's the king.
- 50:55Speaker 2: For me, there's perfect balance. Like, it wasn't too far.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Right, right, right. It was exactly what you wanted. Right.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Exactly what you need to market a fight and to
- 51:04Speaker 2: promote himself.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Yes. Yes, I agree with you.
- 51:06Speaker 2: But, Well, again, it's weird, though, because I think authenticity
- 51:11Speaker 2: is important when you do that as well, though. And
- 51:14Speaker 2: Conor McGregor kind of is the next person for me
- 51:16Speaker 2: that's kind of delivered that.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Oh, 100%. He took it to a whole nother level.
- 51:20Speaker 1: A whole nother level.
- 51:21Speaker 2: Every time this guy's on the mic, he'll say one line,
- 51:23Speaker 2: and I'm like, T-shirts, easy.
- 51:25Speaker 1: How about when Jeremy Stephens is yelling at him.
- 51:27Speaker 2: And he goes, who the fuck is that guy?
- 51:33Speaker 1: You can't beat this guy. He's so funny. I'm just like,
- 51:37Speaker 1: why did you even open your mouth, bro? So funny, man.
- 51:39Speaker 1: It's so funny.
- 51:40Speaker 2: And you need to be able to do that. Before
- 51:43Speaker 2: I even had my first fight, I spent hours. I
- 51:48Speaker 2: was a big WWE fan. And I felt like The Rock,
- 51:53Speaker 2: you know, Dwayne Johnson, out of all of them, was
- 51:56Speaker 2: the best at marketing himself. He had the crowd in
- 51:59Speaker 2: the palm of his hands. Every word that he said
- 52:02Speaker 2: And it was simple sayings. And I was like, yeah,
- 52:05Speaker 2: I studied this, studied this. I was like, okay. And
- 52:08Speaker 2: even like his stances, he'd come up, like jump on
- 52:10Speaker 2: the ropes and put his hand.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Up and just stand there. Look around.
- 52:14Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Like he just demanded eyes.
- 52:17Speaker 2: So again, I just came to, okay, what could I do?
- 52:19Speaker 2: So I was like, okay.
- 52:21Speaker 1: You know, venom, snake, relate to a snake. Okay, I
- 52:24Speaker 1: was like, okay, yeah, let me do this.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Okay, okay, that's check. I've got a stance that I
- 52:32Speaker 2: can do.
- 52:33Speaker 1: Okay, I need a saying. Okay, what can I say?
- 52:35Speaker 2: Because again, I used to listen to people on After
- 52:37Speaker 2: Fights and I didn't hear anything they said. They're like, yeah,
- 52:41Speaker 2: I beat that guy. And I'm like, thank you for
- 52:44Speaker 2: my sponsors.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Who? Who were your sponsors? Didn't hear anything.
- 52:51Speaker 2: So I'm like, it has to be concise. I have
- 52:54Speaker 2: to say specific words and just, I write this stuff down.
- 52:58Speaker 2: But again, I speak to my team. It's like, bro,
- 52:59Speaker 2: what are you guys doing? You need to do this
- 53:01Speaker 2: kind of stuff and Understand that this is a part
- 53:03Speaker 2: of your game.
- 53:03Speaker 1: You've got five seconds after the fight on the mic.
- 53:07Speaker 1: If that.
- 53:08Speaker 2: What are you going to say? What message is going
- 53:10Speaker 2: to land? What is going to make you memorable? And
- 53:13Speaker 2: I do things on my walk-ins as well. I need
- 53:16Speaker 2: people to remember. They're watching 16 fights.
- 53:18Speaker 1: On the night.
- 53:19Speaker 2: Why do they remember me? Yes, my style is exciting.
- 53:22Speaker 1: That's cool. There's this weird guy.
- 53:24Speaker 2: He does some weird stuff with his arms and that
- 53:25Speaker 2: is quite cool. But they're not going to remember my name.
- 53:28Speaker 2: I need other things to keep them coming back. Oh,
- 53:30Speaker 2: there's this guy in the weigh-ins. He stood above this guy,
- 53:33Speaker 2: put his snake hand up. And then, oh, that's the
- 53:35Speaker 2: same guy that did the dance. Because now you're getting
- 53:36Speaker 2: it from different places. That's the guy that threw the Pokeball. Oh,
- 53:40Speaker 2: what's his name?
- 53:41Speaker 1: What's his name?
- 53:42Speaker 2: The more times you keep hitting them with different things,
- 53:45Speaker 2: the more times they're more likely kind of really buy
- 53:48Speaker 2: into you. I think this is why I was able
- 53:50Speaker 2: to create a big enough brand before even touching the UFC.
- 53:56Speaker 2: just because I paid attention to that kind of thing.
- 53:58Speaker 1: You were one of the first guys to make a
- 54:00Speaker 1: name for yourself in Bellator. Because Bellator, it was hard
- 54:03Speaker 1: to break out. There were some wild fights in Bellator
- 54:06Speaker 1: that never got recognized. How about the Eddie Alvarez, Michael
- 54:10Speaker 1: Chandler fight? Fucking crazy fights. And I feel like those
- 54:15Speaker 1: guys left a lot of who they are there. We
- 54:19Speaker 1: got them kind of after. And Chandler's still remarkably durable.
- 54:24Speaker 1: But that's just a discipline thing and a hard work thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:27Speaker 2: I think he's just accustomed to, like you said, he's
- 54:29Speaker 2: trained a certain way his whole life. He's always going
- 54:31Speaker 2: to have that kind of athleticism.
- 54:32Speaker 1: But he's, you know, 38 now. I mean, it's like
- 54:35Speaker 1: you can only, I wished he had not been in Bellator. Look,
- 54:40Speaker 1: I'm all for competition. I think competition's important. I don't
- 54:43Speaker 1: think there should be a monopoly in the MMA business.
- 54:45Speaker 1: I think it's bad for the athletes. Yeah, definitely. I
- 54:47Speaker 1: love the fact that PFL overpays people. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:51Speaker 1: Give them a million dollars. Everybody, get a million dollars.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Everybody gets a car. You get a car. I wish
- 54:56Speaker 1: there was more organizations. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I hope 1FC succeeds. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 55:01Speaker 1: It does help. It helped me as well, even in
- 55:03Speaker 1: my negotiation. Fucking everything. Yeah. However. Yeah. There's a caliber
- 55:08Speaker 1: of athlete that I feel like should only be in
- 55:10Speaker 1: the UFC. Yeah, yeah. And you're one of those guys.
- 55:12Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate that. There's a caliber of athlete where, like,
- 55:15Speaker 1: I want to see how good they really are. You know? Like,
- 55:20Speaker 1: some guys, like, Patchy Mitch... Patchy Mix is a beast.
- 55:24Speaker 1: He's a bad motherfucker, but so is Mario Bautista. Mario
- 55:28Speaker 1: Bautista had the perfect game plan to fuck up his party,
- 55:30Speaker 1: but that dude, when he was in Bellator, was of
- 55:34Speaker 1: that caliber. I was like, I want to see him
- 55:36Speaker 1: over here, man.
- 55:37Speaker 2: I personally, and obviously because I've experienced it, for me,
- 55:42Speaker 2: the first time I got nervous in an MMA fight
- 55:46Speaker 2: was my first fight.
- 55:47Speaker 1: In the UFC? No, my first fight ever.
- 55:50Speaker 2: And then after that, I was like, oh yeah, this
- 55:53Speaker 2: is the same as when I was fighting in the
- 55:55Speaker 2: kickboxing world.
- 55:56Speaker 1: I'm cool.
- 55:56Speaker 2: I didn't have any, I didn't get the nerves again.
- 55:58Speaker 2: The first time again since then was the first, no, sorry,
- 56:01Speaker 2: weird enough, the second fight in the UFC against Ian Gary. Now,
- 56:06Speaker 2: the first fight, I don't know why, I just, I
- 56:09Speaker 2: don't know what it was, but I was quite relaxed.
- 56:13Speaker 2: And then the second fight, I was like, oh, it's something,
- 56:16Speaker 2: a reality hit me of like, oh, you're in the UFC.
- 56:18Speaker 2: The people are going to demand a certain, thing from
- 56:21Speaker 2: you and you got a reputation of before of the
- 56:22Speaker 2: knockouts of the celebrations of the walk-ins of the this
- 56:25Speaker 2: of the that and then I just let that put
- 56:28Speaker 2: a weight on me really yeah yeah that's crazy that
- 56:31Speaker 2: it was the second fight I can't even explain as
- 56:34Speaker 2: to why it was the second fight and not the
- 56:36Speaker 2: first one and then even the third fight I still
- 56:40Speaker 2: had that kind of oh man I'm not performing the
- 56:46Speaker 2: way I want and I felt like I'm Eager to impress.
- 56:50Speaker 2: And I never felt like that in Bellator. But at
- 56:53Speaker 2: the UFC, I'm like, I'm trying my best.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Isn't that crazy? Yeah, it's weird. It's the same thing.
- 56:57Speaker 1: It's the same thing. Cage, cameras, people. Same thing. Same thing.
- 57:02Speaker 2: But I just, the magnitude of it, I don't know.
- 57:05Speaker 2: I'm guessing.
- 57:06Speaker 1: It's what we all grew up with.
- 57:08Speaker 2: It's what everyone grows up with. It's like, this is where,
- 57:10Speaker 2: like I said, there was always question marks around my name.
- 57:13Speaker 2: I was jump knees and this and that. Always question
- 57:17Speaker 2: marks around my name still. But then now I'm here,
- 57:20Speaker 2: it's like, oh, actually, these guys can respect me now,
- 57:25Speaker 2: actually respect me now because I'm here. And then I
- 57:27Speaker 2: was just trying too hard, trying too hard, trying too hard.
- 57:30Speaker 2: The last fight was the first time I was like,
- 57:34Speaker 2: I'm back. And this is why I just keep getting
- 57:37Speaker 2: me back in the cage because I swear to you this.
- 57:39Speaker 2: I'm back to where I used to be and how
- 57:42Speaker 2: I used to feel.
- 57:42Speaker 1: It's just an issue of getting guys that are willing
- 57:44Speaker 1: to fight you that are of a certain caliber. Exactly. Because,
- 57:48Speaker 1: you know, obviously right now you're pretty big. So for
- 57:51Speaker 1: you to get down to 170 again would be a
- 57:53Speaker 1: real problem. Are you committed to 185 or are you
- 57:56Speaker 1: open to either one of them? I want 170. I
- 57:58Speaker 1: can see a clear pathway.
- 57:59Speaker 2: Even after my last fight, I messaged Hunter and I
- 58:03Speaker 2: literally like, look, oh, let me fight.
- 58:06Speaker 1: It was Morales. Yeah. Yeah.
- 58:08Speaker 2: And I was like, look, another undefeated guy.
- 58:10Speaker 1: Perfect fight. He's a beast.
- 58:12Speaker 2: I'm ready. Let me take him. And I said, what
- 58:15Speaker 2: I could do after that is in December, I think
- 58:19Speaker 2: I said, or no, March next year. I was like, yeah,
- 58:23Speaker 2: give me that for November. March next year, usually come
- 58:27Speaker 2: back to the UK. Let me fight the winner of
- 58:30Speaker 2: Leon Edwards and Pratas. I was like, another great fight there.
- 58:35Speaker 2: And then you've got July card. Obviously, everyone's going to
- 58:38Speaker 2: put their hand up to be on that. But I said,
- 58:39Speaker 2: if you guys want me to be on that, again,
- 58:41Speaker 2: I'll fight for whoever you want in that top range.
- 58:44Speaker 2: I don't care who it is. Pick somebody. I'll fight them.
- 58:47Speaker 2: And then I want a title shot.
- 58:48Speaker 1: Or you give me the title there. Yeah.
- 58:51Speaker 2: But I'm like, I can see a clear path to
- 58:54Speaker 2: what I want. And it's just everything seems slow, which
- 58:59Speaker 2: I did. Like I said, I didn't expect that. coming
- 59:04Speaker 2: to the UFC.
- 59:05Speaker 1: I think there's just too many athletes. There is a lot.
- 59:08Speaker 1: I think they have on contract more than 500. Damn.
- 59:15Speaker 1: How many athletes does the UFC have under contract? Throw
- 59:19Speaker 1: that into it.
- 59:20Speaker 2: But then also, I think, and obviously I'm managed by
- 59:24Speaker 2: Paradigm with Audie. And he said he feels like the
- 59:29Speaker 2: Paramount deal, they're having to integrate that now as well.
- 59:33Speaker 1: And I'm like, I didn't think about that.
- 59:35Speaker 2: But every time Bellator, because Bellator kept getting new partnerships,
- 59:39Speaker 2: it did slow things down a little bit.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, that would make sense. Yeah, that doesn't start
- 59:44Speaker 1: until January.
- 59:45Speaker 2: But obviously they're sorting out contracts and things from now.
- 59:49Speaker 2: And then they obviously have to try and align the shows.
- 59:51Speaker 2: And I'm guessing, obviously I don't know, but I'm just
- 59:54Speaker 2: saying it just feels... even slower than before. And I'm like,
- 59:58Speaker 2: that sucks.
- 59:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:59Speaker 2: And I'm like, I just want to be back out there.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: I don't care. And this is why I'm happy to take... 674. Wow.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: 674 fighters under contract. And they don't have fights every week.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: They have fights almost every week, but not every week.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: I mean, just think about that. So you have 52 weeks...
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: You have all these fighters. Fighters want to fight multiple
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: times a year. I appreciate that, but I'm MVP, man.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: Let's go. I am with you. I'm with you. I
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: always say that I wish I was a matchmaker, but
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I don't because it's the hardest job. Yeah, I'm sure.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: I used to talk to Joe Silva back in the
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: day when he did it. He fucking hated it. Dealing
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: with everybody and managers and people flake out and fail
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: drug tests. God damn it. And these guys, what they're
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: doing right now is very difficult because what what Mick
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Maynard and Sean Shelby are dealing with is the volume
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: is so much greater. Yeah. There's so, and there's so
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: many more really good guys, like in almost every division,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: like guys are coming in from the contender series. That
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: guy looks like a world championship caliber fighter. Talented. Talents
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: off the charts right now. And it's because they get
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: to watch. Yeah. You know, these are the kids that
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: are growing up watching Anderson Silva. They're growing up watching
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: John Jones first fight. They're growing up. Yeah. watching the
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: early Chuck Liddell fights.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: It's totally different.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: When they're play fighting with their friends, they're in stances
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: that look right. You know? They know what they're doing.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: And they know the names of every submission and this.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: It's so true. They're calf kicking each other in the
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: fucking schoolyard. It's a totally different world. It's very true.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: And those kids are going to grow up and that's
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: going to be integrated into their neuromuscular system. Yep, yep. Yeah,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and they're going to learn, there's guys coming along that
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: are like elite black belt level jiu-jitsu, elite stand-up, elite wrestling,
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: takedown defense, cardio off the charts, and they're 22. And
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: you're like, this is nuts. Now it's just about whether
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: you can compete, whether you can pull it off and
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: keep your head together on fighting days.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: Which is, again, I think is something that people don't
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: speak about enough.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Listen, Aaron Pico is as talented as they come, right?
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: That dude is a fucking vicious boxer, incredible wrestling, gold
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: chip prospect. But Lerone Murphy is another guy. I was
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: saying before that, this is the guy that's not getting
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: the credit he deserves. Because you've got all these loud
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: killers at 145, but you've got this one dude that
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: does everything perfect. Yeah, yeah, and he's beating everybody. He's
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: beating everything. Etching away, etching away. And he doesn't take damage.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: And he's clever. And he's slick. And he does things.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: And every technique is perfect. And there's no fat on anything.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: There's no wild winging punches. Everything's tight. That spinning elbow
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: was a work of art. He just knew. Aaron Pico's
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: a train. He's come bang. That was crazy. But that's
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: the difference between someone who can compete at the highest level. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: And is custom to it. Right. It's the knowing when
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: to hit the gas and when not to. Pico's just
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: all gas, no brakes. Yeah, go on.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: Like you said, it's similar to Michael Chandler again.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Yes. Just in that rage mode all the time. All gas,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: no brakes. You need to take your time. But that's
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: a wrestler thing, too. They always want to break people.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: Because in wrestling, you can do that. You can have
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: that mentality where you're constantly hitting the gas because you're
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: not going to get knocked out with a flying knee. Yeah, true. True, true. Changes. Yeah,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: because you get that. That's how you compete. You get
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: this mindset of, I'm going to fucking dominate. I know
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: what I did in training for this. My gas tank's
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: off the charts. My aggression's off the charts. I'm a killer.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: I'm going to dominate. I'm moving forward. I'm moving forward.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: The problem is with a guy like Lerone, it's like,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: you think he's backing up. He's coming forward. Oh, the timing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: The timing. It was just like.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: But Pico even stepped right into the elbow.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: It was ruthless. It made it ten times worse. Ruthless. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: And that's my thing.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: The car crash effect when you create those collision moments.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: So for a guy like Lerone, who's not a big
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: marketing guy, not a big, like, doesn't say wild shit
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: on the microphone, just steady professional, does his job. He
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: needs to do that, right? He needs, like, this spectacular
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: thing where all of a sudden everybody goes, he... Needs
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: to fight Alexander Volkanovski. And that looks like that's what's
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: going to happen now because of that one performance. Which is,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: I'm so happy for him. Me too.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: He's a cool guy, man. I'm so happy for him.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: But this is why I tell people, if he had
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: just a little bit of chat, a little bit of
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: show your personality or something, just.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Give me something else. You have that, though. No, but
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: you know what it is?
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: I always say, like, everyone, like, Demetrius Johnson, for me, is.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: one of the greatest of all time all time of
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: all time another underappreciated guy.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Because yeah yeah but i feel like underappreciated because you
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: can't market him in the exact same way as you'd
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: market like a conor mcgregor or somebody else like that
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: but he's a gamer i'm like shed a light on
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: there's a massive yeah massive community of gaming that industry
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: is billion dollars deep market this guy because he goes
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: back home and he's just like... Yeah, he's one of them.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: He's one of those guys. But again, we didn't see.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: I don't feel like we saw any of that until
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: afterwards when he was kind of like doing his own thing. Now, obviously,
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: he's doing a lot of his YouTube channel. I'm so
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: happy that he's getting the recognition.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: It's kind of when he went to one that he
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: started doing more of the gaming stuff online. No, he
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: had been doing it, though. He had been doing it
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: in the UFC as well? He had been doing it, yeah.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: But again, it's just more, I guess.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: They didn't capitalize. Yeah, that's what I mean. I think so.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: Certain people, you have to like, what is your thing?
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Not everybody is just the fighting.
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: They have things to kind of release, wind down and
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Find that out.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: He's killing everybody anyway. So how else can we market?
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Instead of being like, ah, can't market him.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: He doesn't talk. He doesn't say anything.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: There must be something there. There has to be something
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: else there we could look into.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: Well, it's interesting because some guys, their personality is no personality.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Like Pereira. Yeah, yeah, yeah. His personality is stone face. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: Just stone face, destroyer, death machine. Here he comes, Amazon warrior.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Like literal, actual Amazon warrior. Yeah. Like not a faker.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: His fucking family comes from a tribe in the Amazon. 100%.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: But then that's what he markets though. Yeah. I guess
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: that's what they market. But it was because of- No,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: but he markets that as well. He markets it. He
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: works out. That walkout. Oh, yeah. That's true.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: Bro, I do it myself. When he's walking out, I'm
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: just waiting for him.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I'm like- That's true. And that's what I mean though.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: I mean, like that's you, you, you, you're telling, you're
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: selling your story with just something so simple.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: That's actually a very good point that I didn't even
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: think of. His walkout. His walkout. His walkout is maybe
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: the best in the sport. Yeah. And that's what I'm
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: trying to say. And that music. Yeah. Jungle music behind him.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: You just, you just, you just, the walk.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Just this Amazon warrior. It's simple.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: Everyone can relate to it.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: It's consistent. So I'm always going to, oh, that's the guy.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: And you see kids in the audience throw the one-two
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: hook afterwards. Yeah, they do it.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: And like I said, because I'm a big wrestling fan,
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: I see it's those moments that everybody will remember and
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: everybody will do.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: Right, like when Stylebender came into The Undertaker. Oh, beast.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: But that's what I'm trying to say. It's those kind
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: of things that people just don't.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: And I'm talking the fighters themselves. Obviously, I feel the
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: UFC can do their bit as well. But technically, you're
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: already on the platform that's going to show you to everybody.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: So then it's your job to figure it out as well.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Another aspect of the game. Yeah. Like strength and conditioning,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: like all these different things. Exactly. Just think about it.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: You're a professional. Figure out how to market yourself. Yeah.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: You are the product. The problem is, though, it does
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: lead to, like, cringe moments. Of course. Of course. Not
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: everybody has your personality. And some guys try, and it's like, yikes. Shit.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: You got to take a risk.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: You got to take the risk.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: If it goes well, it goes well. Yeah. It goes well.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: So, like, as you said about Alex Burr, technically, we
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: wouldn't care if he walked out of that and got
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: knocked out.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: We wouldn't give a shit. Yeah. But he's a killer. Yeah.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: That fight this weekend is very, very interesting. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because,
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: so here's the downside to fighting all the time. Fighting
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: all the time with your style is a very different
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: thing because you take so little damage, which is another
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: huge element. I kind of would tell people that if
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: you have a kid and your kid wants to learn
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: martial arts and they want to eventually be an MMA fighter,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: I would say two things. Number one, wrestling. Take that
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: kid and teach him how to wrestle because... If you
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: could just develop takedown defense and understanding of grappling, at
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: least you have a base from the time you're real little.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: That should be your base. Yeah, yeah. Because it's the
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: most important aspect of the fight. If you can't grapple,
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: a guy can take you down and he can hold
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: you down and you can't do shit about it. Number two,
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: learn how to point fight. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Learn how
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: to point fight. Learn distance control. Because there's a different
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: thing that you guys are doing. If you got like,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: People think of Billy Blanks as Tybo. You gotta go
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: back and watch Billy Blanks when he was a fucking
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: karate wizard, dude. He was a wizard, and he was
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: hitting people where you couldn't hit him. All the old
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: school guys were all like light on the feet, bladed style,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: and they had this leap in ability that if you're
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: used to a guy standing in front of you, it's
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: a giant problem, and you don't have the timing to
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: solve it. You could go two, three rounds deep before
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: you start actually landing anything. You can't do anything to them.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: It's a giant problem. And I would say you want
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: to be the person giving the other person that problem.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Then you can learn all the other stuff too. Learn
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: your boxing fundamentals and more tie and knees and elbows.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: But if they're nowhere near you and you can hit them,
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: you can close that gap quick. You have a blitz.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: So, I mean, understanding that distance control.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: And also the feints. The stutter steps. Those things change
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: the game.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Yes, there's so much movement in that style of fighting
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: that just gets lost when people are plodding and just
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: teeping each other in the stomach and kicking their legs.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: But it's funny, people always used to go on about
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: me and Wonderboy Thompson fighting. And I'd always say, it
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: won't be as exciting as you think. For us, me
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: and him... there'll be moments where we're bouncing, faking, and
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: we'll laugh at each other because we saw what would
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: have happened if one of us went, but the crowd's like,
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: the fuck is going on?
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Fight. The fuck are you guys doing?
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Smiling at each other.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: They don't get the fight that's going on in the moment.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: And I say to people, it's not as exciting. Two
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: pluses don't always give you that plus.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Not always, but you still want to see it. Of course,
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: people always want to just... It's also like fighting doesn't
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: have to always be ultimate excitement. You have to, like,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: that's why I say no stand-ups, ever. When a guy
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: takes a guy down, that person on the bottom does
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: not want to be on the bottom. They want to
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: be up. If they can't get up, tough shit. It's
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: only five rounds. Every fight starts, stands.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: It up, which is a giant, giant advantage for a striker.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: Because otherwise they wouldn't even be able to get themselves up.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: So none of that. See, it's got to be pure.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: It's got to be real. You can't have ways that
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: a guy won only because the rules set it up
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: for him to get to a better position. I agree.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: The only thing that I find slightly frustrating in that
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: element is.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: I don't mind the wrestling.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: I think wrestling is a beautiful art and is, like
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: you said, one of the most important arts to dictate
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: where you want the fight to go. But if you're
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: taking me down, try to kill me.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: I agree. Try to be.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: finish the fight don't just take me down and just
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: i agree i've had people like grabbing my legs and
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: looking at the clock here's.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: The thing if they're not good enough to kill you
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: yeah right what if they're good enough to take you
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: down and hold you down but then they just have
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: to be real defensive afterwards and they'll throw a little
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: pity pat i know i know that's the only element
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: that i just but here's the thing they're not good
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: enough to do more do you know what i'm saying
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: But you must be, though. Maybe not. Uh-uh. Maybe not.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: Maybe only good enough. Like, you're so good, and they're
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: just good enough to hold you down. But if they've
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: reined up and started reining, and then you fucking framed off.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: You got to half guard. You got back up to
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: your feet. All of a sudden, we're dealing with this
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: shit again. Fuck that. But if you just stay on
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: top and don't take any chances, now you can't do shit. Yeah,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: I agree. It's boring as fuck.
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: For me, it's not even a boring element of it.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: I still enjoyed that aspect. If I was watching, I
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: only enjoyed that aspect because I know what I'm looking
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: at now. I'm like, oh, he's got, okay, he's grabbed
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: his wrist there. Okay, I can see what he's trying
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: to work to. Okay, no, you didn't get it.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Okay, I'm still in the fight.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: Whereas some people, I guess the people, if you don't
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: get into grappling, you're not going to know what's happening
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: other than they're just lying there. So I get it
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: for them. But for me still, it's just like the
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: aim of this game It's for me to beat you.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: And I mean, like, knock you out, put you to sleep.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: So I'm trying to show you that I am the
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: stronger man as a warrior. And that's not by holding you.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: Right. That's not by holding you down.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: Holding you down to get you to a position to
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: land this elbow and hold you down to get this
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: position to land this.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but just to... I completely agree. However... Even though
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I'm a fan of yours, if a wrestler who had
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: that boring style took you down and held you down
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: for three rounds and won a decision, I'd be like, damn,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: he did it. Yeah. He did it because he can't
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: do it any other way. If he can't stand up
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: with you, he's going to get fucked up. And he
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: can take you down any time. Why would he ever
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: let you up? And if losing position is dangerous, so
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: if you're very explosive and you're very good at grappling,
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: you're very good on the bottom, you've gotten submissions off
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: the bottom. If a guy reigns up and starts throwing shots,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: but he feels like his base is gone, and he
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: just wants to clinch and hold on and maintain position,
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: and he maintains position with this kind of shit. You're
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: on top and you're doing this kind of shit. Just
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: little movements. Like, he's still getting away with that. He's
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: still doing that. Yeah, I agree. Because that might be
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: his only path. Right. For you. But the thing is,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: he's not good enough. Yeah, yeah. Where then you have
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: guys like Khabib. Khabib gets you down, you're getting fucked up.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: You're getting fucked up constantly. Everybody loves that. Everybody loves that.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: He's talking to you. He's creating that space by still
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: pinning you.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: He's crushing your legs in between his legs and he's
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: fucking wailing on you.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: That I can appreciate all day every day.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: I can too, but some guys aren't good enough. They're
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: still fighting. They're in there. They're not good enough. There's
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: guys at a world-class level that are not going to
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: be world champions, but they might be able to beat
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: a guy who could be a world champion. if they
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: can do that thing. It sucks. I know, I know.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: But it's real.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: It's hard to class you as a world championship fighter then.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Okay, well, let's talk about Hamzat then. Yeah, yeah. Hamzat
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: and Drakus Duplessis is a perfect example of that. You
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: got an elite grappler who dominated the fight with very
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: little damage.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: When I dominated it to the point where you're in
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: the worst position you could be in in MMA.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: You're in a crucifix position. Over and over again. Every round.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Over and over again. You can't do shit about it.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: You let him just.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: You can't do shit about it.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: So do you think that he's worried about him exploding?
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: Because in my head, I'm like, the fight ends if
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: I elbow the shit out of you right now.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: I think he's worried about the chaos and Drake is
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: getting back to his feet. They wanted to just win.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: This is the whole thing. Because he came back to
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: his corner, apparently. And this was told to me secondhand,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: but I'm pretty sure it's true. Yeah. By a reliable
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: source that he was saying, can I box now? I
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: was like, no. Okay. No, you're not fucking boxing. His
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: team was like, take him down. He can't. Look, if
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: you got that clear of a dominance. No.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: That I still agree with, though, as a coach is saying, no,
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: take him down. But I'm saying once you are in
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: that position.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: Smash. Smash. Yeah. Your whole thing is smash. Yeah.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: Smash the shit out.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: What the hell? I think they just wanted that win
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: no matter what. You know, because it's such a big deal.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: Hamza finally got a shot at the title. What is
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: the clearest, most intelligent, if you're betting a billion dollars
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: on this fight, what's the best way to victory? Fucking
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: just take him down. You can take him down anytime
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: you want to. Hold him down. Punch him a few times.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Make sure you're in dominant position so you're not going
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: to get stood back up. If the referee starts talking
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: to you and telling you to start throwing a little
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: bit of this, do a little bit of that. Fake
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: a submission. Don't throw all your gas into it. Do
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: whatever the fuck you got to do, but get that
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: goddamn title. Yeah. Right? And then there's going to be
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: some guys that he can't do that to. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: And that's where things get interesting. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: Who would you say that is, though? Because his wrestling
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: style is just.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Crazy. Yes, it's crazy. So Brandon Shaw had been to
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: his training camp. Okay. And he called me up. He goes, bro,
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: we got to talk. He goes, I just got back
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: watching Hamza train. He goes, I've never seen anything like
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: that in my fucking life. He's like, dude, but I'm
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: telling you, he's mopping the floor with Division I All-Americans,
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: world-class grapplers, jujitsu black belts. He goes, he's mopping the
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: floor with people. He goes, it's nuts. They asked me
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: if I wanted to spar with him. The shop goes,
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: fuck you. He's like, fuck you. I'm not going in there.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: He goes, he was mauling people on the ground. He goes,
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: I've never seen anything like it. He goes, it was crazy.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: He goes, he's so high level.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I had the privilege of going to the gym
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: in Dubai and training alongside him and saw it for myself.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: And it's, yeah, I was like... It's a shocking level
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: of grappling. Yeah. And when you can achieve that shocking
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: level of grappling on world-class MMA fighters, why wouldn't you
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: do it? This is my thing, my take on it. Like,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: if you just want to win and make as much
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: money as possible... And keep doing that. You should finish, guys,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: whenever you can. But if you don't think you can
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: in the path to victory is grappling, this is still
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: a sport. Yeah, fair. If it wasn't a sport, there'd
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: still be headbutts. Yeah, there'd still be stamps. Stamps, soccer kicks,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: all the wild shit that used to be. You'd still
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: be able to wear shoes. Who gives a fuck? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: But it's a sport. So if it's a sport, we've
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: got some rules. I just don't think. I don't think
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: there's anything wrong with winning by the rules. It's not
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: my favorite style.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: Fair, fair, fair.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: My favorite style is either a knockout artist or a
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: submission artist. I like a guy who just finishes everything. Yeah,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: Olivero when he was... Yeah, when he was in his prime.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: In his prime, just kills. Catching triangles and darses. Oh,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: my God. He was a monster. He was so good.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: Those guys, like, when you watch a guy who's, like,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: an elite world-class submission artist and the fight goes to
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: the ground, it's just a totally different thing. You know,
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: you're in real, like Fabricio Verdum, when he was in
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: his prime, when he caught Fedor with that triangle. Catching
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: Fedor with a triangle is crazy. If you know how
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: explosive that guy is and how fast he is and strong,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: what a great grappler he is. But Fabricio Verdum's another
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: guy who doesn't get his due. When you think about
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: all time goats you think about Noguera you think about
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: Fedor and you think about Minotauro and Fabrizio Verdum tapped
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: them all he tapped all the greats all of them
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: tapped them yeah yeah yeah Tapped them. All the greats.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Didn't just win by a decision. Yeah, didn't just hold down.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: Tapped Fedor when Fedor was Fedor. People were like, whoa,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: that's crazy. Fedor's a beast. Bro, he was a monster.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Stoic warrior from Russia. No expression. He was the earliest
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: of his time. Oh, way ahead of his time. Way
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: ahead of his time. Ability to catch submissions off his
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: back with lightning speed. He had a lightning fast arm bar. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: And power on the feet. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bro, he
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: walked down Cro Cop. Yeah, it's crazy. Crazy. With stand-up. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: Cro Cop's head kicks were insane. Every kick. But Fedor
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: was blocking them so intelligently too. He was using that
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: high block with the knee way up like that to
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: catch that left kick. And they caught it shin to
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: shin many times. That was a crazy fight. But Fedor
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: in his prime was so good, man. Because he was
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: the first guy other than Minotauro. Minotauro, but he was
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: more dangerous on the feet than Minotauro. But Minotauro on
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: the ground was one of the first guys super dangerous
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: off his back. Off his back, yep. Yeah, just super,
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: super lethal guard. Like when he beat Bob Sapp. That
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: was the nuttiest fight in the history of MMA. That
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: was the nuttiest. Bob Sapp was 350 pounds with abs.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: I was going to say, he's kind of like your
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: Ngannou nowadays.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: But way bigger. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Way bigger, but not
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: as skilled.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: Yeah, no way. He's gotten Francis' improvements. because in his
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: earlier stages, I was just like, yeah, he's got power,
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: but he's technically like.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: Francis basically beat Tyson Fury in a boxing match. Crazy, right?
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: Basically beat him, because I scored it for him.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: I scored it for him, 100%. They just could not
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: let that happen.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: He dropped Tyson Fury with a left hook and then
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: danced in front of him. I mean, that's skill. I mean,
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: he wasn't ready for Anthony Joshua, because Anthony Joshua... it
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: was a different thing. He's got more one-shot knockout power.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: It was a bad game plan as well, though.
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: He likes to switch in. But again, this is where
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: the boxing is. If you don't have that kind of
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: intellect in the boxing, that footwork and foot positioning is
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: put your foot on one side, you're going to get killed.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: You put your foot on the other side, you're safe.
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: You can kind of manage the power and see the
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: punches come in. but he kept switching stances by just
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: leaving himself in just the wrong positions.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: Yeah, he wasn't ready for a guy like Joshua. He
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: wasn't ready. There was a lot of hype off the
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: Fury fight. Also, Joshua got to watch him box in
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: the Fury fight and see some patterns. Fury, I think,
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: probably took him lightly. Yes, I think so. He's one
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: of the greatest of all time. This guy's never had
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: a boxing match. At the beginning of the fight, he's like,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: time to go to school. Like, oh, really?
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: And then he probably got stunned he just got stunned
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: and that was it he's now working.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: You talk to any fighter they will tell you the
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: worst times of their life is when they thought that
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: a guy was nothing and then in the middle of
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: the fight they realize oh my god I'm losing they
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: took a guy lightly and they didn't get up for
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: the fight and then they went in there and that
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: dude was fired up.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: And ready to go you can't take anybody lightly though.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: No Mike Tyson, Buster Douglas, another perfect example of something
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: like that. Yeah, 100%, no. No one thought. This guy
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: was partying every day. Yeah, exactly. He did not take
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: it seriously at all.
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: He did not take it seriously at all. He got
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: a big respect for Buster Douglas on that one, though.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Oh, my God. It was one of the greatest performances
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: of any heavyweight title fight ever.
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: To want to walk in and do that as well.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: The fact that that guy could do that the whole
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: time but only did it against Mike Tyson is nuts
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: because he was one of those guys, and we all
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: know them, that is super talented. and just never realizes
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: their full potential. You know guys in the gym, you'd
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: see them sparring. I talk about this all the time.
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: I've had so many people, obviously I've got to see
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: over the years that are talented. And again, it's the
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: same thing, but can you do it when it counts?
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: Can you do it when the lights are on? Can
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: you do it when there's pressure and it means something
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: to you, your friends, your family, money? Can you still
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: do it? That's when it counts. But I've seen guys
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: that are... There's a guy, actually... And I always talk
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: about him just because he was super unique. And weirdly enough,
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: he got to the UFC on a short stint. Galore Bufondo.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: I don't know if you ever remember him. He only
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: had two fights, but he fought Charlie Ward. And I
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: call it Hadouken. He just grabbed him and threw his
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: head into the floor.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: Oh, jeez. And it was a KO.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: And he actually never got the bonus for that. I
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: don't know how he didn't because I've never seen anybody
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: just throw someone's head down, you need.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: To watch it at some point. Boom. There you go.
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: And if you keep it going and you see how
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: he finishes, look, he's like.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: Wow. That dude landed hard. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That dude
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: landed hard.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: And if you see the finish, this is how athletic
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: this guy was.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: Just watch. Light work.
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: Just landed a little spider stance. Yeah, perfect landing. Now,
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: I had to deal with this every day.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and... That was nothing.
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: He's super explosive. But again, he's a striker. Very weird striker. Like,
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: his kicks are like his hands.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: He can... For ages, yeah?
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: I was sparring him one time and me and him, like,
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: I'm the guy with him. When he steps in, my
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: eyes do this. And I'm like, okay, I have to
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: make sure because a kick will come from anywhere. And
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: we're sparring, going back and forth.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: And I'm in my element. And.
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: everything slows down for me and I see his head
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: drop down and alarm bells are going off and I'm
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: like he doesn't he doesn't shoot he doesn't go for
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: takedowns but I'm feeling alarm bells going on like something's
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: going wrong I don't know why this felt this slow
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: something is wrong and I've never done this block in
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: my life and I went like this X block I've
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: never done this in my life Never been taught this.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: My body said, throw your hands.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: He did that and did a cartwheel kick. Front flip.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Oh, geez.
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: Landed on his foot and axe kicked me. If I
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: didn't do that, I'd be sitting here in two right
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: now talking to you about the story that I once
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: used to do MMA and this guy split.
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: Me in half.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: And he's front flip axe kick. He's done a front
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: flip axe kick. That's crazy. On his Instagram, I don't
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: know if you'll find it, but on his Instagram, there's
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: clips of him doing it on a bag. And he
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: literally flips, lands on his foot, hits the bag, and
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: he's just standing.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: But he did it.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: I've blocked it. Now, even that alone, because I've now
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: blocked it, you should fall off balance. He took his
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: foot off and carried on sparring. Everyone in the gym
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: was like, How was that?
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: I never even thought anyone could do that.
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: He's another person that in the cage, he never showed
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: this stuff. I've seen him somewhat on a single leg
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: and he's run up the cage and slipped up the
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: single leg and kicked off the cage and landed behind
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: the person. Always when I talk about this, it sounds
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: like I'm exaggerating. He used to do stuff that I've never,
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: it's only in games.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: And this is why everyone used to love him. Just
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: watching him do that flip, I believe every word you're saying.
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: Because that was crazy. The landing was crazy. Yeah, like
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: it was a feather. No, he landed softly on one knee. Yeah.
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: He was insane, but just never showed it.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: Is he retired? Yeah, he teaches and stuff now, but
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: he just... And it's a shame, and he was a
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: fun character, like I said, an amazing person to train with,
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: because he made me better. And he's got the few
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: people in the gym that could actually kick me in
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: the head. And catch me, because usually I'm good at seeing,
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: I've got good eyes, and he's just, yeah, he was
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: just something else.
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: Crazy that you knew it. Like, you had intuition.
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: I don't know what happened. But as I've been said,
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: if you don't do this, you're going to die today.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: Wow. That's crazy that you recognize that of all movements. Yeah.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: But again, he never shoots. He's a striker.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: He'll sprawl and then start doing his jiu-jitsu from there.
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: Never really shoots. And he just went like this. And
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: I'm like, what's going on here? I don't feel like sprawling.
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: Something's wrong, but I don't feel like sprawling.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: Oh, here you go. Here you go. Oh my God,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: that's crazy.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: He does one and he lands it.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: That's crazy. Boom. That is so crazy.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: Imagine doing that during a sparring. It doesn't make sense.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: And I'm talking, he's hitting the bag.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Boom, look. That's crazy. And I tell people, people feel like,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: you're talking rubbish. You can hear that. If that hit me.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: That is so wild.
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: And I wish he was able to show this stuff.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: What kind of explosion you have to have to pull
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: that off. The amount of force you generate. Yeah. And
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: who would see that coming?
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: I still don't, to this day, know how I saw
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: it coming, but if he did that, and again, he
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: goes into, he went into these fights and he would,
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: it would be relatively basic. He wouldn't show all of
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: this kind of stuff.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: So he would tighten up in fights. Yeah, he'd just.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: Tighten up a little bit. He just wouldn't express himself
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: in the same way.
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: Did anybody at that time work with like a mental coach? No,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: I wouldn't.
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: From our gym, the only person I know did it
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: from our gym was actually Alex Reid. But he is
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: a weird character anyway. Funny guy, lovely guy. But he
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: used to have like therapists come and do this kind
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: of stuff. And at the time, I feel like I
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: didn't care for it because he just made it seem lame.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: Like, That's because it was from him.
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: But I understand more so over my time the importance
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: of the mental aspect of things as well.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: Maybe if someone could explain to him or if you
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: could have a conversation about what goes wrong when he competes. Yeah.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: Like what are the thought process when he competes and
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: what could be done different to change that thought? Like
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: to combat them when those thoughts come up. Yeah. To
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: have a tool. Yeah. Have a mental toolbox where you go, no, no, no. Yeah.
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: We're not going to entertain this kind of negativity. We're
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: going to stay positive. We're going to stay zen. You know,
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: the most important things, don't ever give in to anxiety.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: Don't let it get to you. Don't let it follow you.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: You're positive. You're breathing. You're moving. You're a killer. Keep
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: moving and just have someone with him maybe initially to
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: coach him through those movements.
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: I wish there was some, again, but again, also maybe the.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: The gym that he's in with us at London Shoot,
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: that's not a thing.
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: We beast.
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: And the thing is, he still looked amazing up until
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: the fight. He'd get to the fight and you'd be like, bro,
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: I can't wait for people to see this. And he'd
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: get there and you're like, what are you doing, man?
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: And it was frustrating because he was still super talented.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: He won one and I think he lost the next
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: one and then that was it. But even his previous
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: fights before that, he's got some exceptional fights.
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: But just never. Not what he's capable of doing.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: I've never seen what I've seen in the gym on stage.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: Wow. Never seen.
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: And he still got signed to the UFC. Just because
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: he was still talented. And obviously somebody saw his talent
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: and was like, yeah, I want that. And nobody's ever
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: seen what I've seen this guy do. And all of
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: our teammates are like, if you'd have seen that, everybody
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: would be throwing money at this guy. Just make sure
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: he's on the next card.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: It's crazy. Yeah. It's really crazy. Yeah. Because it seems
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: to be like that in almost every sport, but in
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: fighting in particular. Because it's the biggest mental hurdle. You know,
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: there's no team to fall back on. There's no, I
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: guess we lost tonight, boys. No, you got fucked up
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: in front of the whole world. And that's the sport
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: that you're in. You're in the sport with the highest
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: highs and the lowest lows. So that pressure is just,
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: it's unexplainable to the average person. Yeah, you can't explain it, really.
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: This is why I try my best to focus on
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: the element of fun. Cause I feel like when I'm in,
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: when I'm dancing, smiling, laughing, joking, everything slows down and
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: everything's enjoyable.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: There's no stress.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: And anytime I feel slightly stressed, you might see me dance,
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: which is interesting because people just think I'm just doing
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: it for the other person to mock the other person.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: And sometimes it's just, I just stay chill, man.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: You're here.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: You're here.
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: Like you don't need to do anything more than this. Right.
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: If I feel like a little bit like, oh, that
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: was a bit, and my mind starts going, no, no, no, no,
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: let's shake it off. Get into this, get into your
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: mode again and then go back to enjoying yourself. That's my,
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: but I know that some people need to be in
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: this angry state and just, you know, psych themselves into it.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: And I don't even need to be angry at my opponent.
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: And I think that comes from the fact that I
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: used to have to fight my siblings. It's never, it's
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: not based on anger. I love them. Like, but, My
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: dad is, he would say like, yeah, that's not your
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: sibling on the map, but straight afterwards, make sure you
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: pick that person up, make sure they're good. And again,
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: my brother would beat me up. My other brother would
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: beat me up. My sister would beat me up. Everybody,
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: but I still had love for them. So I don't,
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: I've never needed anger to thing. And, and the fact
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: that my family did this thing and even my nephews
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: and stuff now, we still, they still, it's generational. It's
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: just something that keeps us all together. And we're so close.
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: It's not based on being angry. just based on learning something,
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: enjoying something, and doing it with people that you love.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: So that's why I can make it fun. Everyone loves
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: this whole tense, and I don't.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: I think what a lot of people don't understand, too,
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: is the hardest part of it is the day of
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: the fight. It's not the fight. Once a fight starts happening,
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: then you're there. You're in it. You're in it. And
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: it's not scary. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Unless you're getting fucked up. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: When you're getting fucked up and you know the end
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: is near. You want to see ultimate bravery. Khalil Roundtree
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: in the last round with Pereira, when Pereira's putting it
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: on him, that's ultimate bravery. Because he knows he's getting
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: fucked up. He knows he doesn't have much time. There's
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: nowhere out. His skill set is all in stand-up. I mean,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: he can take guys to the ground, but at this point,
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: that's not going to happen. It's not happening. And his
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: face is broken up. And Pereira's doing that cobra thing
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: where he gets cobra style. He leans back and slams in. Beautiful. Oh,
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: it was terrifying. But that kind of bravery in front
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: of the whole world, a lot of people, they're not
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: sure if they have that. Yeah, fair. And so there's
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: just the pressure of that in front of the whole
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: world like that.
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: So maybe they're in there just like, just do enough,
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: just do enough.
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: Exactly. They're scared. Which shrinks you. And sometimes super-duper talented
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: people are the most scared because it kind of came
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: too easy for them. There's a thing about super-duper talented
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: people that for some reason... like that gift comes with
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: a curse and that curse is that it came to
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: you too easily.
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: So you never really develop on the grind.
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: Yeah. The real will and drive to like overcome, just
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: make these little tiny wins every day to pile onto
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: a skillset. You're just a lightning bolt, you know, you're
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: a lightning bolt. And then, you know, when it's time
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: to actually fight, you're like, You don't know if you've
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: been tested. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You don't know who you
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: are yet. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: I think I get that a lot, though, as in
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: people are always like, he's just naturally talented. And only
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: when I tell people that I used to get my
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: ass handed to me.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: But this is the thing that I've always said. Guys
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: who grow up with brothers, especially older brothers who can
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: kick their ass, they're ready to fight at all times
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: because they're fighting in their fucking house they're ready to
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: fight with guys who can beat them up their whole
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: life yeah yeah just that alone like sets you up
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: for competition in a different way than someone like i
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: grew up my sister we didn't fight yeah it's like
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: nobody beat me up at all it's totally different because
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: you're you're accustomed to being around hostile males who are dominating.
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: Yeah was it older or younger though Younger sister.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, because my older sister would still beat me up.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: My sister never got into martial arts. I was the
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: only one in the family who got into it. Oh, okay, okay, okay.
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: But if I did, if I grew up with a
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: bunch of brothers, I'm sure we'd be beating the fuck
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: out of each other. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: Weird enough, we had to do it. There's one thing, again,
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: you'd always say, this is not for out here. This
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: is for in there. If you've got an issue, verbalize it.
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: And if you still have an issue, we can sort
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: it out in there.
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: But yeah. I'd be annoyed. We'd have fights every now
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: and again, but nothing crazy. But it's just the accustomed,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: being accustomed to just constant back and forth. How about
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: fuck you? Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like it's in your house.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: It's in your house. It's where you sleep. I was
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: the wind-up. Oh yeah?
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: But I couldn't fight, so I had to do it
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: some other way.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: So you had to talk some shit. Yeah, talk some shit.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: You also have to be a little tougher because you're
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: the smaller one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's part of the thing,
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: you know? What's crazy about Jon Jones is his brother...
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: He's got two older brothers, no? Well, I think one
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: of them is younger. Isn't Chandler younger? but they're all beasts.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: So you're growing up in a house of beasts. You
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: better be ready for some hostility. You got to be
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: ready for some aggression. There's a giant benefit of that
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: as far as mindset, because the mindset, you're accustomed to hostility.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: All his brothers are super freaks, just giant athletes. And
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: so you know he's in this house with highly competitive
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: males his whole life yeah so you're totally accustomed to
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: competition whereas with some people competition is like super overwhelming
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: and it's this it's a test you don't want to
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: take you almost don't want to find out if you're
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: good enough.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: I think school even the school system has like they
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: slowly over the years they slowly taken out certain things
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: that allows challenges people in a way that gives them
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: that gift of being competitive and especially in the UK,
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: I don't, I'm not sure about in the States, but
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: in the UK, we, they, they changed the rules. This
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: was just after I would have left to, um, not
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: allowed to pick teams because.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: Because then people will feel bad if they got picked last.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: I'm like, if you're shit, I'm not picking you.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: Get better at your... This is real life. That's how
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: it works in real life. That bad feeling of getting
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: picked last. Lionel Richie was talking about that yesterday. Oh, serious? Yes.
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: Lionel Richie, before he was in a band, it was
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: always like, he was the last one to get picked
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: for this. He was the last one. He was talking
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: about that openly. But look, that's what created Lionel Richie. 100%. Yeah.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: And again, I think we... Again, over there, I'm not
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: sure here, but we model... Molly Cuddle, like... Yes. The kids.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: And then they think you surround them in cotton wool.
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: And then the real life hits them and they're just like, what?
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: It's the opposite of Yoel Romero. Yeah, exactly. You become
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: a machine. It's the opposite. It's the opposite of that.
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: I think I was talking to my brother as well
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: earlier about how they say, I forget the saying, it's
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: like tough men create good times, good times, and the
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: whole cycle of that. And it's very true, though. We're
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: creating too much good times for people. And everybody's complaining
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: about everything.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: Exactly. When things are really good, the problem is whatever
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: is bad, even mildly, becomes a giant thing. Then you're
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: dealing with microaggressions at work. People get crazy. They look
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: for all kinds of grievances everywhere they go. When you're...
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: are involved in like hard competition you're not interested in
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: any of that stuff at all because it's just a
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: giant distraction the real thing is so difficult and that's
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: why I think even though it's uncomfortable for kids I
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: think like wrestling in high school any kind of competitive
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: sports in high school martial arts especially 100% I've been
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: an advocate for ages so valuable for you.
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: For ages I've been saying this like just it's okay
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: to lose it's okay to lose it's actually good for
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: you very good for you and you need to learn
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: this kind of stuff like I said as soon as
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: you As soon as they're out of your care, they
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: have to experience that anyway. You can't, you're not, and
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: I used to do this even when I was teaching.
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: We're teaching a jab or something, teaching a jab and
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: we're doing slipping drills. And you're jabbing like this. I
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: was like, you're not helping anybody by jabbing away from
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: their face because now this guy thinks he's amazing at
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: slipping punches.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: And then we make him smart and he's like, doosh, doosh.
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: Move your fucking head I'll do what I usually do.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: So I'm like it's better that you hit him in
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: the gym so then when they go out into the
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: real world or they go into a competition and whatever
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: they can actually they're actually good at these drills that
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: I'm giving you you're not helping by trying to be
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: helpful you don't have to hit hard but be accurate
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: get them used to it and then slowly speed up
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: yeah and bro I say this all the time but
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: it's exactly the same thing people need to go through
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: those actual trials and tribulations in certain areas so that
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: then they can be ready for it later on.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: 100%. And this idea of protecting them and everybody gets
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: a participation trophy. That's so bad for... That feeling of
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: bad from losing is beneficial. It's just like the feeling
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: of being tired after you work out. That's how you
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: get in shape. It's all good for you. Exactly. It's
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: all good for you. You're getting into an emotional shape.
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: But this is why I feel a lot of people...
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: Trying to take shortcuts for everything. Nobody really wants to
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: do the hard work.
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: It's the Olympic world. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Nobody wants to
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: do the hard work.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: And I get it if it's really excessive. You let
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: it get to a certain point. And it's like, okay,
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: you need at least some help to get to a
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: certain point to then work out.
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: But you need to work. You need to work. And
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: it's good for your brain. Your brain is... We have...
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: for whatever reason, a whole series of human reward systems
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: that are built into our brains from the times that
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: we were all living in tribes, thousands and thousands of
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: years ago. This brain, it requires tasks. There's things, it's
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: like enforced in your brain that if you go out
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: and you make arrowheads and you hunt the deer, you
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: have food. Your family's surprised, so you have tasks. So
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: you're whittling the stick and you're into it. And you
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: better be fucking into it. Because if you're not into it,
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: you're not gonna eat. So if you have a life
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: where there's none of those things, And you're sitting there
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: in front of Netflix. Of course you're depressed. Of course
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: you're depressed. Your body's not getting any of the stuff
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: that it needs. Your mind isn't getting any of the
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: tasks that it needs.
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: Someone was telling me it's the reptilian mind that looks
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: for dangers or seeks dangers because we're not in a
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: society that has those dangers.
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: We look at dangers.
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: Our dangers are now this person looked at me funny
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: or this person.
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: Or even worse, your phone.
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's even easier now.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: People are commenting on you. Oh, the haters are getting
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: me today.
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: To be fair it's funny the first time this was
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: still earlier so my comments were from YouTube initially I
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: had an Instagram but I didn't really use it like
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: that so after my first fight I was super pumped
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: I'm like because like I said to you I was
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: so nervous after my first fight and I always say
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: I always say look if you watch all of my
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: walkouts have been like yeah vibes yeah yeah I'm just
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: happy to be here my first fight I.
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: Was like this.
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: I was dying inside joe just like what in my
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: head literally i was like why did i decide to.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: Do this why am i here but what.
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: I was stressed the whole walk was the most the
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: longest walk and you've never seen me so tense and
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: then the second i got in there and the bell
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: rang i was like oh yeah same thing okay Then
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: I started to feel myself and the vibe, my energy started,
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: the MVP that we obviously come to know now came out.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: And that was, for me, that was just like, that
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: was great. But in terms of, I just lost.
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: Raul, go ahead. You lost what you're talking about? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: No worries, it happens all the time. But that was
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: interesting that then the second fight, was the one that
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: really overwhelmed you.
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: That was the second fight in the UFC that overwhelmed me.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: So the first fight you ever had was when you
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: walked out. That's when I walked out. The first fight
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: you ever had.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: So that was me against, no not UFC, me versus Dishman.
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: And I just walked out and seriously, I just had
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: nothing but fear inside me.
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: And what kind of athlete was he? What did he do?
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: I'm not sure he was a kickboxer or something.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: Didn't see my first fight.
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: We had, I had like, I think three pullouts before
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: I got to that fight. Like three weeks before, three
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: different people. And at that level, it happens all the time.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: And I had fights online. So my coach was like,
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: are you able to take these down? I'm like, they're
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: randomly filmed from so many random people.
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: So like, I wouldn't even know how to, where to
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: begin to, find out to try and get them taken down.
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: So I just, if.
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: Anybody did research, they would see that I've got, I
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: had like a 720 kick. So it made sense why
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: people was pulling out.
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: For people that don't understand what that means, that's not
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: a 360 degree kick. This is one of them. This
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: wasn't even the first time I did it. Where is it? Yes.
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: Is it coming up? It'll be after this. Okay, yeah. Okay,
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: it's going to be. Yeah, I said just before this,
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: just before this. That's crazy. That's such a crazy kick.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: That dude is sitting there going, how the fuck did
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: he hit me with that? He put his hands on
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: his knees and everything. Like, how the fuck did he
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: pull that off?
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: So I understand why people would look at that and
- 1:45:21Speaker 2: be like, no, not yet. But this guy stepped in
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: and yeah, like I just, I felt so bad, negative
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: going forward, walking in.
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: But then once I was in there, but.
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: Yeah, if you see the walkout, but even how I'm,
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: even here, I'm super tensed. Like it was only until
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: I started bouncing that it was even a thing.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: What was the thing that was bothering you the most
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: about doing this? Just my decision.
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: Like, why did I do this?
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: I don't know specifically. Oh, but once you got loose.
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: Yeah, once I got in there, I was like, oh, cool.
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: He had an obvious game plan. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: He was trying to take me down.
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: He wasn't strong. So I was like, yeah, I'll just
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: push off. I was feeling good. And I think after
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: he felt my strength, he was like, okay. He kind
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: of stood back.
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: That's such a problem. It's such a problem. I'm watching
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: you move here, and I'm thinking, like, what do you do? Oh,
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: you can't do anything. You can't do anything because he's
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: so far away from you. Like that, when you try
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: to close a distance on him, or rather he tries
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: to close a distance on you, and he just can't.
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: He just can't get close. Like, look at that. That's
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: just nuts. That's a terrible puzzle to try to solve
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: in real life. Wow, look at that dive. That's pretty good, though.
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: You got to hold your ankle. I mean, that shows
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: you how much you wanted that takedown. Yep. Until this happens. Oh, boy.
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: The best part is just the standing there. That's amazing.
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: Look at this. This is amazing. That is amazing. That's
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: the best not walk-off KO ever. Right? That's a standoff KO. Like,
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: you realize. That's crazy. You didn't even look at him.
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: It was funny when people asked me, like, why did
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: you stand there?
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: Like, what if he came back?
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: I was like, I landed the kick and I stood
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: still and I was thinking he might come back so
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: I could spin the other way and land another kick.
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: That was the game.
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: And then when he just, the referee stepped in, I.
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: Was like, perfect.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: This looks good.
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: This looks good. It did look good.
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: It looks slick as fuck. But that's the thing, I went, okay,
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: that's where I remember I was going. I went crazy
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: viral for that. Everyone's like, who's this guy? And I was,
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: I was like, because of the relief that I had
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: because of how tense I was, I was like, Oh
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: my God, like that was for me ticking the box
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: that I can actually do this. I can actually make
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: a career of this. Cause I wasn't sure.
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: And got home. What did you jump online?
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: Like, I want to, I want to see, like, I'm
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: seeing a video of like crazy thousands of like comments
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: and this and that.
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: Like, okay. Yeah.
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: Maybe the next comment, maybe the next one.
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: Nope.
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: Yeah, people don't like me.
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: They didn't like you for that video?
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: I felt like I had murdered someone child.
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: For that video? Yeah. Okay.
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: It just shows you why you shouldn't read comments. No, 100%.
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: Because you're only getting the opinions of the dumbest motherfuckers alive.
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: If you just saw that. So let me tell you
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: my thought when I saw that. Because when that clip
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: went viral, I went, finally. This is proof of what
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: I've been saying for a long time. They have a
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: different thing. The really elite point fighters have a totally
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: different thing. And you can't even get close to hitting them.
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: And we're seeing that now. That was the beginning of it.
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: Because even though... Raymond had really good success in glory. Yeah,
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: he was amazing, yeah. He did a great success in glory,
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: but it was different, right? Because you're in a small ring,
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: it's roped off, and he wasn't accustomed to leg kicks yet.
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: He had that one spectacular jumping side kick, spin back
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: kick to the face.
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: He nearly hit me with one of those. He was
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: very famous for his double back kicks.
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: And then every now and again, he would hook it.
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: He's knocked people out in the points game. And everyone's
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: seen it. And I remember, I think it was the
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: first time I fought him. And I was young, but
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: I had a reputation. He was the guy over in
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: America that had a reputation. And we've collided. I was like,
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: I don't care who this guy is, man. I was
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: feeling myself. I was killing everybody for ages. I remember faking, moving, moving,
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: moving around, moving around, faking, faking, got him in the corner.
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: I was like, oh, perfect. Boom, blitz. Same thing. I
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: was like, something's off. Boom, did this.
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: But both, normally the first kick is light.
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: Both stamps. I was like, shit.
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: Not only was that fast, but that was powerful as well.
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: And that just got into my head. It threw me
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: right off. I didn't want to commit to any of
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: my strikes. And just from the first moment he let
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: that go, I was just like, yeah.
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: It was very dangerous. Dangerous. Very dangerous. Dangerous, dangerous. And
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: he was another guy that, like, you know, proved that
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: point that this is a completely different skill set. And
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: if you don't know how to deal with that, you're
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: in real– It took the elite guys. It took like
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: the Nicky Holskins and the Joseph Valtellinis, those guys, to figure...
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: Nicky was beast. Yeah. Just chop the legs. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: And Nicky was so technical. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He was tight,
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: hands up high, chop the leg, chop the leg. He
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: was a beast. Yeah. Chopping the legs, man, is a
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: totally different ballgame. Yeah, yeah, yeah. As soon as the
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: legs start getting chopped, you're like, oh. You can't bounce anymore.
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: But that's the thing.
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: It's weird because I started to utilize that as a
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: way to.
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: Win fights. Weird.
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: Not obviously taking the leg kicks, but only giving you
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: that option. So everyone's like, yeah, but that's an awkward style.
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, but when I stand in front
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: of you like that, you don't think to do a
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: punch because I feel way too far away. So you're
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: not doing a punch. The only thing you have is
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: what's in front of you is a kick. So it's like,
- 1:51:19Speaker 2: I got used to timing kicks as you're kicking, collision,
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: going in, or just pulling just off and then putting
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: my foot in slightly deeper. And then just pulling off
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: and then putting my foot in slightly deeper. Now I
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: know I can pull this trigger when I'm ready. And
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: you're getting more and more demoralized because you're not landing.
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: You're throwing a kick, you're swinging around. And there's only
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: one thing available.
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: And there's only one thing available. So I have to
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: keep pressing that same button.
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: Right. And the idea of you shooting on... It feels far. Yeah,
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: too far. It feels very far. Well, that's the Hamzat thing.
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: It's like Hamzat shoots from the middle of the fucking octagon.
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: That guy's got a crazy shot. That shot he hit
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: Whitaker with and the one he hit with... Who was it? Oh,
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: the leech. When he picked up the leech, he picked
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: him up, carried him over to Dana White. And it's like,
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: I kill everybody. Like, whoa, this is nuts. He was
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: another guy. They're like, how the fuck are you making 170? Yeah,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: he's a big boy. When I first met him, I
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: was like, what are you talking about? You're not 170. Yeah,
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: big boy. I fucking hate the weight cutting. I hate it.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: I hate it with a passion. I hate it more
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: than anything in the sport. I think it should be eliminated,
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: but it's too late. Yeah. I don't think... I think
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: people should get down to a healthy weight and fight
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: at the healthiest weight, whatever the hell that is. Do
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: you think there would be a way to combat that?
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: Because obviously in boxing, you have to weigh in multiple
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: times now.
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: Well, some fighters make you do that. Like Gervonta Davis,
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: he made Ryan Garcia do that. He wanted to make
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: sure that Ryan Garcia didn't rehydrate. Mayweather did that to Canelo, too.
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: It's just a G move. Yeah, that's smart. That's when
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: you're the A side. You're the smaller, you're the A side. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: I'll fight you, but you've got to weigh 143 when
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: you get in that fucking ring, bitch. Guys will take
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: that fight for that big paycheck, but it's not a
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: good move. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I just think that
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: it's legalized cheating. I just think that it's cheating. Look,
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: if you're a 155 pound champion, but you weigh 190 pounds,
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: that's kind of crazy. I agree.
- 1:53:17Speaker 2: And if I didn't have to wake up, because if
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: you don't join in, you're fighting monsters.
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: That's true. But. they would have to fight monsters too.
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: Everybody would have to fight a person that weighs what
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: they actually weigh.
- 1:53:27Speaker 2: No, I agree with that. But I'm just saying with
- 1:53:29Speaker 2: the fact that people are weight cutting.
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:53:31Speaker 2: When I got to this arena, I'd prefer to just
- 1:53:34Speaker 2: report what I weighed at.
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: But because everyone's weight cutting, I was like, you have to.
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: You have to. You have to do it. Because you'll
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: look like. When you were fighting at 170, for people
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: that understand, I'm short. That's 30 pounds less than me.
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: That's crazy. That's crazy. That's just a giant advantage that
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: you can't give up. And when you're doing that across
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: every single weight class and every single world championship, the
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: last guy that I know that didn't cut weight was
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: Frankie Edgar when he was a 155-pound champ. When Frankie
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: Edgar was a 155-pound champ, he weighed 155, and he
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: moved like a ghost. He was all over the place.
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: He was fast as fuck. He had great endurance. His
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: recovery was incredible because he could take a great shot
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: because he wasn't dehydrated like everybody else was. That's the thing.
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: I actually feel great at middleweight. Yeah. You definitely have
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: the size for it. Yeah.
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: I'm naturally that way. But it's weird, though, because people's
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: body types, because they are cutting, they're still slightly stuck.
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: Not necessarily frame-wise as big as me. But they're just
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: slightly stockier. And obviously, as you say, the guys that
- 1:54:39Speaker 2: want to come in and just go, yeah.
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: They just want to clinch and get you down. It's
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: a giant advantage.
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: It's an advantage if they're going to be that much
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: heavier than me as well. Moving people. Even in my
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: last fight, when I got taken down in that last round,
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: trying to Against Kananir, trying to move him.
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: I was just like, Jesus. Kananir's huge. He's a big boy.
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: And he's one of the only guys that's got KOs
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: in three different weight classes. I know, I know. From heavyweight,
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: light heavyweight, middleweight. Heavyweight, light heavyweight, and middleweight. Yeah, beast.
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: He's huge for 185. But it's another perfect example. And
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: I think, look, there's something to be said for the
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: ritual of doing it for a lot of fighters. It
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: means a lot, and you can choose anything. to cut
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: less so that you're more healthy the day of the fight.
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: But everyone kind of concedes that you have to cut something.
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: And I just don't think that's smart 24 hours before
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: a fight in a cage. Why would you deplete your
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: body purposely? Because it's basically like getting drunk. It really is.
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: You're dehydrating the shit out of your body. Seeing people
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: just look a mess. And you only have three, five,
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: 40 hours to rehydrate between the weigh-ins and the time
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: you're actually going to fight. If you're lucky, you have
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: 40 hours. That's not enough time. Yeah, I can do it.
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: I don't care to do it. I can do it.
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: I agree with you. You have to do it. If
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: everybody was like, okay, let's all just do it at
- 1:56:02Speaker 2: our weights.
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: Well, imagine if people did dehydrate and rehydrate it and
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: we started calling it cheating. You know what I mean?
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: I mean, it would be if people got caught and
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: they looked at it the same way people look at
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: people getting caught with steroids. Fair, fair, fair. Because the
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: reality is right now you can't do it because of
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: the weight class limitations. There's too many weight classes where, like,
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: Where you're at. So 85 to 205, that's nuts. That's
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: 20 pounds. That's so... And for maybe people who've never grappled,
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: they don't know what that means or never been punched,
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: they don't know what that means, but that's a giant
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: amount of fucking horsepower and gravity on top of you.
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: And so if you've got weight classes at a reasonable... space.
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: Like I feel like 10 pounds is good. I feel
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: like every 10 pounds, you can go 45, 55, 65, 75.
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: And if you're in between, you either add muscle or
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: you lose weight and you'd stop lifting as much weights
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: and do more cardio. You'll get down to that, right?
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: But that's what you are, what you actually are. And
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: if we did that, there would have to be some
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: sort of a hydration thing where they just show up
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: and weigh you. Yeah. Like, you know, like people show
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: up and drug test you now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: drug-free sport. They'll just knock on your door. Hey, Venom,
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: what's up? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Can you pee in this? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: Let's talk. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: That makes sense to me.
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: Yeah, just show up. What do you weigh? Get on
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: the scale. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then you get on
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: the scale. 190? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bro, you are a Bantamweight.
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: This is crazy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because there's dudes that
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: are out there doing that. Oh, no, 100%. We always
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: talk about Glace and T-Bowl. When Gleason Tebow was 155 pounders,
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: he looked like a bodybuilder. He looked like he weighed
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: 200 pounds when he got into the cage. It was nuts, man.
- 1:57:43Speaker 2: Yeah, the rehydration. I've seen people cut ridiculous amounts. And then, yeah,
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: like you said, the way they rehydrate.
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: It's terrible. But it's also a lie. You're not 155 pounds.
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: You're 200 pounds. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what you actually weigh.
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: And I understand why you do it. I understand why
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: everybody does it. But there's got to be a better way. Yeah.
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: The worst I ever saw was Travis Luter when he
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: fought Anderson Silva. I don't remember that one. He lost,
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: but he had Anderson down. Travis Luter was an elite
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: black guy. belt. Yeah. And he was in the ultimate fighter. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: Wins the ultimate fighter. I mean, dominates everybody. Dominates people
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: on the ground. Everybody that I talked to trained with him.
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: It was like guys on a whole other level as
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: far as jiu-jitsu.
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: And the day of the weigh-in, he can't make the weight, man.
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: And he's so dehydrated that his lips are cracked. Yeah,
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: I see. And- He's not walking to the scale, he's shuffling.
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: And I'm watching him, and he missed the first time,
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: and then this is like one of the second or
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: third time that he tried to make weight, and he
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: eventually didn't make weight. So even if he beat Anderson,
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: he wouldn't have won the title. But, bro, he had
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: him down, and he was on top of him in
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: the beginning of the round. And for anybody that's ever
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: rolled with Travis... If he was healthy and he has
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: you down on the ground, you're fucksville. That guy's good.
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: He was really good. But it was just the weight
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: was way too much. He was just drained. And then
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: 24 hours later, you're supposed to fight one of the
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: greatest fighters of all time.
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: And it depletes the liquid around your brain as well.
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: So you're taking a shot, so you're not going to
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: take it as well. Exactly. Yeah, it's a lot. Yeah,
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: I agree. You're tired. Your endurance sucks. Everything's all fucked up.
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: Everything's all fucked up.
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: But that's why I get down very close to my
- 1:59:21Speaker 2: weight because on fight week, I'm very low.
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: Like, what do you weigh? If you're fighting 185, what
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: are you weighing fight week?
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: 185 is easier, though, so 190.
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: Oh, that's great. Yeah, yeah. Like, I don't like to
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: cut to it. What about 170, when you're at 170?
- 1:59:36Speaker 2: I get down to probably about 182, 183.
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: Not that bad. Not that bad, and then cut down
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: from there. That's not that bad. Yeah, again, I don't
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: like to overstress myself. Pereira weighed in at 185 and
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: fought at 220. He's massive. Fought at 220. Yeah. Weighed
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: in at 85, fought at 220. Yeah.
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: Like you said, that's a lot.
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: That's insane. That's a lot. That's insane. Yeah. That's so
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: much fucking weight. And what does that do to you? Yeah.
- 2:00:06Speaker 2: I've seen people. I can't even remember what fight it was.
- 2:00:09Speaker 2: It was in Bellator. And he was banging the sauna
- 2:00:13Speaker 2: to get out and his coach was holding the door.
- 2:00:16Speaker 1: Oh, God. You need five more minutes. Oh, my God.
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: And the guy is kicking the door. He's like, I'm
- 2:00:22Speaker 2: never doing that. I don't ever want to.
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: Feel like that. That's so crazy. Yeah, it's too much.
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: So many guys black out. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. I've
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: seen people passing out and stuff. Brian Ortega was just
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: in an interview talking about that. He essentially like almost
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: like– how did he describe it? It was like 30
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: minutes where he was like in real trouble for his
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: last weight cut. Yeah, he's like– It's just, he just
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: got really wrecked. People have blacked out before.
- 2:00:48Speaker 2: There was a lady that fell off the stage, fell
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: off the scales, wasn't it? She stepped back off the
- 2:00:53Speaker 2: scales and then just, her legs just went.
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: Oh, I don't remember. 30 minute coma. Oh, sugar. Due
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: to his weight cut for Aljamain Sterling. Holy shit.
- 2:01:03Speaker 2: But he missed, he keeps, yeah, yeah, yeah. This is
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: too much for him.
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: I don't know why.
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: Why doesn't he just go up?
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: Well, that's the problem is the guys at 55 are jacked.
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: I think he just, he dialed in his diet though.
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: He looks a lot thinner now. Like he showed, pull
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: up some of those photos he's got on his Instagram.
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: He's been taking photos lately. Like he just, he realized
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: like he can never do that again. So he's lost
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: a lot of body fat. Oh, that's good.
- 2:01:24Speaker 2: I think sometimes that is the discipline of it as well. Yeah,
- 2:01:27Speaker 2: look at him now.
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: Look at him now. Way, way leaner. Big difference. That's
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: where he needs to be. He hasn't been like that
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: in ages. Yeah. That's where he needs to be. A
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: hundred percent. You know, he likes to live that good life. Same.
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: Even when you said about, like, having, like, random weight checks,
- 2:01:43Speaker 2: it'd make me consider a certain burger sometime.
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: Yeah, but they would have to give you an out-of-shape clause. No,
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: of course, of course. You know, like, give you, like, 10,
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: 15 pounds in between fights. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But then
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: once you start training, they should be able to randomly
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: show up during those six weeks and go, all right, Michael,
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: get on the scale. Yeah. 174. I agree with that. Okay,
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: good to go. Good to go. We're inside of six pounds.
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: Because what you actually cut, what you're saying at 85
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: is perfect in my opinion. That's nothing. I don't like
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: to be. Five pounds is just a good weight sauna session.
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: It's not that much. You're not losing a ton of weight.
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: You're not killing yourself. Maybe you ride the bike for
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: a half hour. What do you do?
- 2:02:20Speaker 2: I literally do a 30-minute jog. It's like really low
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: with a sauna suit on. Straight away, I take that off,
- 2:02:28Speaker 2: go straight into the sauna, 15 minutes, then wrap, 15 minutes,
- 2:02:32Speaker 2: then wrap, and I'm done.
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: See, that's perfect. That's actually probably therapeutic. It's not bad
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: for you at all. That's probably actually very good for
- 2:02:40Speaker 1: you because you're giving your body all this recovery from
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: the sauna and you're getting a nice little cardiovascular workout
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: but nothing crazy. You're giving yourself a lot of heat
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: shock proteins. You're not killing yourself. But there's guys, man,
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: I've seen them and they look like, okay, here's the
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: worst one. The worst one. Other than Travis. Travis was
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: the worst because I watched him shuffle backstage but The
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: visuals is TJ Dillshaw when he went down to Flyweight.
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: He fought Henry Cejudo at Flyweight, and he looked like
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: a dead man. Yes, I remember this. He looked like
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: a hostage that had just gotten released and had not
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: been fed. Yeah, just fed for ages. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: He looked fucking terrible. Because he gets quite jacked as well. Yeah,
- 2:03:21Speaker 1: he fucked up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He fucked up. Look
- 2:03:23Speaker 1: at what he looked like on the left. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: That's crazy. That picture right there. That's what I mean.
- 2:03:28Speaker 1: He's quite big there. Right, but that picture is fucking crazy.
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: That's a prisoner of war. Yeah. You know what I'm saying?
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: That's not a guy. Look at what he looks like now.
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: That's what I mean. Yeah, well, now he's a fucking tank.
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: Now he's a tank. The one on the right is
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: not fair because that's after he's retired. Yeah, he's finished now.
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: He's probably $ 1. 65 now. He's fucking jacked. He's massive. But
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: he's another guy that doesn't get. the credit that he deserves.
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: When he fought Hannon Burrell. I love this style. Pure
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: flow style. Pure flow.
- 2:03:57Speaker 2: But it's the level changes of the up and down.
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: You don't know where he's attacking. It's not linear.
- 2:04:03Speaker 2: It's not just I'm going here or I'm going here.
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: Switching stances constantly. I used to love watching his style.
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: Have you ever talked to Ludwig? No. Oh, you should
- 2:04:12Speaker 1: meet Dwayne Bang Ludwig. Okay. And talk to him. Because
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: Dwayne is the one who coached him in that style. Dwayne,
- 2:04:18Speaker 1: who was an elite kickboxer himself and fought in the UFC...
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: One point in time, I had the fastest ever knockout
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: in the UFC. I think it was a five or
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: six second knockout in the UFC. It was one of
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: the fastest ever. Just step back, one right hand, blam.
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: But Dwayne was a beast. But maybe even better than
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: he is as a fighter, he is as a coach.
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: And he doesn't have that style. This is what's crazy.
- 2:04:41Speaker 1: He devised that style. So this is Dwayne. Watch this.
- 2:04:47Speaker 1: There it is. Nice. So you could call it six seconds.
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: I don't even think it was six. I don't even
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: think it was six. But the point is, Dwayne's style,
- 2:04:56Speaker 1: like he learned from Bas Rutten and, you know, it
- 2:04:59Speaker 1: was like Dutch kickboxing style. But he realized, like Dwayne
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: is like this consummate studier of fighting. And he realized
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: that the best way to fight is is to overwhelm
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: them with possibilities and options, but have a whole system
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: of how to do that. So his system is all
- 2:05:17Speaker 1: about switching stances and combinations while you're switching, and turning
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: and moving, but he's got it mapped out. The dude
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: came over to my place with like a binder, like
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: this thick binder of techniques, and he's full on egghead
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: with this shit. And TJ and him just locked up.
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: And the fruits of that labor was the Hennen-Barau fight.
- 2:05:37Speaker 1: Go to that fight, Jamie. Because I feel like this
- 2:05:39Speaker 1: was one of the finest championship performances at the time.
- 2:05:42Speaker 1: I thought it was the best I had ever seen.
- 2:05:44Speaker 1: Of a guy who was an underdog going into a fight.
- 2:05:47Speaker 1: Hennenborough at that time, a lot of people thought was
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: the pound for pound best. It was him and Jose Aldo.
- 2:05:51Speaker 1: They were talking about those two guys together. And TJ
- 2:05:54Speaker 1: just went in there and worked them. I mean, it
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: was like a sparring match. He went in there super loose,
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: just moving around and started cracking them. Yeah, it's a
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: fun watch though. Just get me in there. So this
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: is like, Hennenborough was the boogeyman. Everybody was scared of
- 2:06:11Speaker 1: this dude. He was so fucking good.
- 2:06:13Speaker 2: Look how he starts, look how he starts.
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: Ooh, step in with an uppercut. Just movement, constant movement,
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: overwhelming you. And look, always on the tips of his toes,
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: moving around. He didn't back up at all, and never
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: gave Hennenborough the chance to get some momentum going. And
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: at the end, when he eventually stopped him, I mean,
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: it was just a fucking ruthless combination when he took
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: him out of there. But, like, if you knew how
- 2:06:38Speaker 1: difficult it is to be... Look at that right hand,
- 2:06:40Speaker 1: right off the bat, in the first round. At this point,
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: Hennenborough's like, oh, no. Yeah, I'm in problems. Yeah, because
- 2:06:47Speaker 1: nobody had thought that TJ was going to be capable
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: of doing this. TJ, you know... was a really good
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: up-and-coming fighter, a really good contender, but this was his
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: finest performance, and it was in a world championship fight.
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: Against a guy that everybody thought was the man. And
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: TJ just beat that ass. And if you go further,
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: see if you can go to the actual stoppage, Jamie,
- 2:07:10Speaker 1: further in the fight. When he, at this point in time,
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: TJ's just styling on him. Just standing right in front
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: of him and popping him. Look at that. Not getting hit.
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: Staying right in range. Dropping down. Head movement. Yeah. Oh,
- 2:07:25Speaker 1: look at that head kick. Beautiful. Oh, my goodness. Beautiful.
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: Look at this. And it's artistic. It's fucking beautiful, man. Yeah,
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: I love it. It's a beautiful stoppage. Yeah. Like, one
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: of the best championship winning performances in the history of
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: the sport. Yeah, yeah, easy. In the history of the sport. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Beautiful. Woo.
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: But that dude, unfortunately, had two bum shoulders. Oh, is
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: that what it was? Yeah, forever. He had, even when
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: he won the title, his shoulders were fucked. He had
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: torn supraspinatuses in both of his shoulders. It got to
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: the point where, he never got it fixed, It got
- 2:07:57Speaker 1: to the point where they're just popping out. So by
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: the time he fought Aljamain Sterling, he told the referee
- 2:08:03Speaker 1: in the locker room, my shoulder's going to go out
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: of socket. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 2:08:07Speaker 2: That's crazy to go in there knowing that.
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: So now he had to retire and he had multiple
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: operations on his shoulder and he can't even reach over
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: his head. He gets his arm that far. Like, that's
- 2:08:19Speaker 1: how fucked he is now. Three months ago. He's got
- 2:08:21Speaker 1: to get another one. Oh, yeah. You can see.
- 2:08:23Speaker 2: Geez.
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Get another soldiery. They're going to cut
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: off the head of my humerus and turn the head
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: into a plastic plunger. That sounds like a bit too much.
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: I hate doing surgery for anything. He has the worst
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: shoulder injuries I've ever seen. I know there's been a lot.
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: Was that from before? Yeah. It was from wrestling. Oh,
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: it was from wrestling. I think it's just from having
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: torn shoulders and just trying to rehab them and not
- 2:08:47Speaker 1: getting them surgically fixed. Okay, okay. You can have some
- 2:08:50Speaker 1: things loose in there and strengthen everything else up and
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: kind of be functional, but not if you're going to
- 2:08:55Speaker 1: be a world championship fighter. Fair, fair, fair. And the
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: problem with a lot of those things is once it
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: tears and pulls back, you can't get it back in place. Yeah.
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: So then you have really complicated surgeries where they have
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: to take a piece of your hamstring and stick it
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: up there or something. other part of your body and
- 2:09:10Speaker 1: reconstruct what was supposed to be there. And then you
- 2:09:13Speaker 1: have to slowly build range of motion into it. Like
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: he got to the point where he was too tough
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: for the injuries that he had, where he should have
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: probably got them fixed immediately. And maybe he could have
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: prolonged his career.
- 2:09:25Speaker 2: It sounds like he just, he went back in, in
- 2:09:28Speaker 2: terms of getting back into training a bit too quickly.
- 2:09:31Speaker 2: So I feel like the rehab can work.
- 2:09:33Speaker 1: I know you obviously.
- 2:09:33Speaker 2: There's certain things you're going to need surgery for, But
- 2:09:36Speaker 2: there's a lot of my stuff, I've managed to bring
- 2:09:37Speaker 2: it back.
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: I don't think he had surgery until after he was
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: done fighting. Oh, so he didn't even have surgery? No,
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: he had surgery on one of his knees because he
- 2:09:45Speaker 1: blew his knee out in the Sanhagen fight. Or I
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: should say Sanhagen, after talking with Sanhagen about what happens
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: in that 50-50 position, Sanhagen blew his knee out. Oh, okay.
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: So he put him in a position where if TJ
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: didn't give in, he was going to get his knee
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: fucked up. And he chose to get his knee fucked up.
- 2:10:03Speaker 1: But that was Corey putting him in that position. I know.
- 2:10:06Speaker 1: So he had to get an ACL reconstruction. But I
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: don't think he got the shoulder surgeries until after he
- 2:10:10Speaker 1: was done fighting. He might have gotten one and then
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: tried to fight again. But the problem is, like, his
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: shoulders were fucked, man. They were really fucked.
- 2:10:18Speaker 2: But that doesn't look fixed. Like, for you to be
- 2:10:23Speaker 2: having to.
- 2:10:24Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no. It doesn't look fixed. But
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: I think that's all they could do with it. That bad?
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: I think it was that bad. I'm looking at an
- 2:10:30Speaker 1: article from right after that fight. It says his third
- 2:10:32Speaker 1: shoulder surgery since 2019. Okay, so that's when he started
- 2:10:35Speaker 1: getting them. And when was that fight? When was the
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: last fight that he had? That was, like, 2023? The
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: Aljo fight, I think, was 22? UFC 280? Mm-hmm. Is
- 2:10:46Speaker 1: it 2022? That's when this article came out. Okay, so
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: he had those shoulder surgeries, and then I know he's
- 2:10:51Speaker 1: had a ton since. And since, you know, like, you
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: look on his Instagram page, it's, like, every few months,
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: it's him in a sling.
- 2:10:59Speaker 2: Well, here we go, trying again. I know guys that are, like, surgery, surgery, surgery, surgery,
- 2:11:03Speaker 2: and they... It never seems to, I've never, unless I'm
- 2:11:07Speaker 2: forced to, I don't ever really go down a surgery route.
- 2:11:09Speaker 2: I always try and figure it out a different way.
- 2:11:11Speaker 2: Like I've had, weird enough, it was both my shoulders,
- 2:11:13Speaker 2: but one was a supraspinatus, the other one was rotator
- 2:11:16Speaker 2: cuff and kind of like some lat injury as well.
- 2:11:21Speaker 2: But just slowly, to the point where I couldn't do
- 2:11:23Speaker 2: a pushup. When, in my last couple of, was it
- 2:11:28Speaker 2: Bellator fights? Yeah, my last few Bellator fights, I couldn't
- 2:11:30Speaker 2: do a pushup. I could still hit in certain angles,
- 2:11:32Speaker 2: so certain angles I was fine.
- 2:11:34Speaker 1: But I had no strength in that direction. While you
- 2:11:37Speaker 1: were fighting? While I was fighting, yeah, yeah. Oh, no. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:11:40Speaker 2: So literally, trying to get that, my arms would just
- 2:11:43Speaker 2: start shaking.
- 2:11:43Speaker 1: I couldn't... Why didn't you do something about that before
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: you fought? I was doing, like, rehab. I was like,
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: as long as I can hit you, I'm fine. That's
- 2:11:52Speaker 1: so crazy. Going into a fight with that kind of
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: a major handicap. I've had worse, but... What's the worst?
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: I don't want to say it as an excuse, so...
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: But the.
- 2:12:04Speaker 2: The day before my Ian Gary fight, I couldn't stand
- 2:12:09Speaker 2: on my left foot.
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: Why not?
- 2:12:13Speaker 2: Up till today, I don't understand it. I had the
- 2:12:16Speaker 2: UFC PI working everything. They did shock therapy. They did acupuncture.
- 2:12:20Speaker 2: They were doing everything. And I literally had it. I
- 2:12:24Speaker 2: had a, if you see the fight, I literally had
- 2:12:29Speaker 2: ankle supports on. They said you're allowed the ankle support,
- 2:12:32Speaker 2: so you can't really have it taped. But I had
- 2:12:34Speaker 2: it taped under the ankle support. But obviously, I couldn't
- 2:12:37Speaker 2: just do one ankle.
- 2:12:38Speaker 1: So you had to do both of them. So I
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: had to do both of them.
- 2:12:41Speaker 2: And yeah, just the day before the fight, I'm not
- 2:12:45Speaker 2: sure if I did anything when I was cutting weight,
- 2:12:48Speaker 2: like twinged it or something. But I don't remember anything
- 2:12:51Speaker 2: distinct happening. But I couldn't walk on my foot.
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: So it was your ankle? You twisted your ankle?
- 2:12:55Speaker 2: It was my ankle or something. And they were working
- 2:12:58Speaker 2: on it.
- 2:12:58Speaker 1: Literally, I was trying... I was in. You don't have
- 2:13:01Speaker 1: a single instance where it went? I don't remember anything.
- 2:13:04Speaker 1: All of a sudden it just hurt.
- 2:13:05Speaker 2: It hurt the night before. Like when you woke up?
- 2:13:08Speaker 2: It hurt the night before. So on the way in,
- 2:13:10Speaker 2: it hurt. And I was walking around and I was like,
- 2:13:12Speaker 2: it's hurting. But it didn't feel like anything drastic. And
- 2:13:14Speaker 2: overnight it just got worse and worse and worse and worse.
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: Probably exaggerated by the weight cut, right? Maybe, yeah.
- 2:13:20Speaker 2: And then literally the next day in the morning we
- 2:13:24Speaker 2: had to go to the P.I., I was, my coach
- 2:13:28Speaker 2: was like, bro, if you can't bounce here now, I'm
- 2:13:30Speaker 2: going to have to pull you flat. I was like,
- 2:13:31Speaker 2: there's no way I can get pulled from this fight.
- 2:13:33Speaker 2: It's not happening. I was like, it's not happening.
- 2:13:35Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:13:36Speaker 2: And I went out there and he's like, I'm bouncing,
- 2:13:38Speaker 2: I'm trying to adjust myself and bounce. And he had it,
- 2:13:41Speaker 2: they did the tape that he was going to use
- 2:13:44Speaker 2: for the fight and he said he'll come in and
- 2:13:45Speaker 2: do it again just before the fight. And yeah, it was,
- 2:13:48Speaker 2: I was just like, adjusting, adjusting. And obviously I had a,
- 2:13:53Speaker 2: Still had a great performance. Yeah, I had my, so
- 2:13:56Speaker 2: my guy, My videographer, Kishan, he filmed, we're doing a documentary,
- 2:14:04Speaker 2: so he's filmed all of it as well. I was
- 2:14:07Speaker 2: kind of like, I'll wait until it comes out as known,
- 2:14:10Speaker 2: but not even to say as an excuse because I
- 2:14:12Speaker 2: was able to adrenaline just, I'm in it now and fight.
- 2:14:17Speaker 2: But there were certain things I was being cautious of
- 2:14:19Speaker 2: and not wanting to do.
- 2:14:20Speaker 1: But yeah, it was just irritating.
- 2:14:22Speaker 2: But that's probably the worst in terms of how close
- 2:14:25Speaker 2: to the fight it was because it's the day before.
- 2:14:28Speaker 2: I've had injuries in the build-up and I'm like, as
- 2:14:30Speaker 2: long as I can throw a punch and throw a kick,
- 2:14:32Speaker 2: I'll make it happen.
- 2:14:36Speaker 1: That's the thing that people don't understand when they watch fights.
- 2:14:38Speaker 1: Sometimes guys, this is one of the things about the
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: rematch this weekend, Ancalaya versus Pereira, is that Pereira supposedly
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: had a fucked up left hand. and rotavirus before the
- 2:14:48Speaker 1: last fight. I believe it. He looked off. He looked off.
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: He definitely didn't look himself. But Ankhalaev looked really good. 100%.
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: I don't want to take anything away from Ankhalaev. When
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: someone looks off, I'm always like, it's like Roy Jones.
- 2:15:01Speaker 1: People go, Roy Jones didn't fight anybody. No, no, no.
- 2:15:03Speaker 1: Roy Jones fought everybody, but he made them look like
- 2:15:05Speaker 1: they were nobody because they were fighting Roy Jones. Exactly.
- 2:15:08Speaker 1: It's like, so is that what's going on? Like, is
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: Ankulayev that good? And so we don't know. So we
- 2:15:13Speaker 1: got to see him fight again.
- 2:15:14Speaker 2: I'd only say no just because towards the fifth round,
- 2:15:17Speaker 2: it looked like Pereira could do some stuff. Like, it's like, okay,
- 2:15:20Speaker 2: you're actually now landing that calf kick a bit more now.
- 2:15:22Speaker 2: You're actually starting to do, it's like, why didn't you
- 2:15:24Speaker 2: start like that?
- 2:15:25Speaker 1: He didn't have the gas. Yeah, so. If you've got rotavirus,
- 2:15:28Speaker 1: your gas is very low and you probably, your energy
- 2:15:30Speaker 1: level feels very low.
- 2:15:31Speaker 2: So he's trying to be, he's conserving energy. So this
- 2:15:35Speaker 2: is what makes this fight interesting. so much more interesting
- 2:15:38Speaker 2: because hopefully he's had the camp he is. And Kalev
- 2:15:40Speaker 2: hopefully comes in looking exactly the same way he did
- 2:15:43Speaker 2: that last fight.
- 2:15:43Speaker 1: Yeah, or better. Or better. He's going to be better
- 2:15:46Speaker 1: because he's going to be the champion. I think there's
- 2:15:48Speaker 1: a thing that happens and Daniel Cormier has expressed this too.
- 2:15:51Speaker 1: It's like a 30% bump when you become the champion.
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: You know like when you were talking about when you
- 2:15:56Speaker 1: won that tournament and also you were better. I think
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: there's that when you get the championship. Hopefully you're going
- 2:16:02Speaker 1: to get to experience that. Yes. You'll get to experience
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: that bump. But this is I feel like that's just,
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: we're gonna have to see. And it's a very intriguing one.
- 2:16:12Speaker 1: Because Pereira, if you heard his left hand, That's the
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: doom punch. Exactly. That left hook, that's depth. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:16:18Speaker 1: That's the one. That's the one. If you look at
- 2:16:20Speaker 1: his highlight reel, there's so many left hooks. When he
- 2:16:22Speaker 1: catches people with that. Even when he grazed like Jamar Hill. Yeah.
- 2:16:26Speaker 1: I still don't get it now. He grazed him. He's
- 2:16:29Speaker 1: got a hell of a punch on him, man. And
- 2:16:31Speaker 1: he put him out. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The Yuri Prohaska
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: one at the end of the first round. Yuri was like, yo.
- 2:16:35Speaker 1: And then he head kicks him in the beginning of
- 2:16:37Speaker 1: the second. Yeah. He's got ferocious power. Ferocious power. That
- 2:16:42Speaker 1: head kick was fast. Yeah. That head kick was fast
- 2:16:44Speaker 1: as well. Boy, I hope he's healthy. But I heard
- 2:16:46Speaker 1: he's super heavy coming into this week. Oh, is it?
- 2:16:49Speaker 1: I heard he's like 230 going into this week. Yeah.
- 2:16:52Speaker 1: But for him... I guess he's got a lot to cut. Yeah.
- 2:16:56Speaker 1: Some guys can do it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't
- 2:16:58Speaker 1: know what the fuck they're doing.
- 2:16:59Speaker 2: Well, I guess if he was able to get to middleweight.
- 2:17:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, yeah.
- 2:17:02Speaker 2: But also sometimes it makes you lazier as well. Like, oh,
- 2:17:05Speaker 2: I can do that.
- 2:17:06Speaker 1: I can eat this. Yeah. And then you get close
- 2:17:08Speaker 1: to the time. Oh, shit. A bit of work now. Well,
- 2:17:11Speaker 1: he has talked about moving up. Again. Yeah, and so
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: is Ankalayev. Oh, yeah, actually he has, yeah, yeah. Ankalayev
- 2:17:16Speaker 1: just said that recently, that he wants to defend the
- 2:17:18Speaker 1: title a couple of times, then move up to heavyweight.
- 2:17:22Speaker 1: I think it's a bit too small. Maybe, but if
- 2:17:25Speaker 1: he puts size on and he gives himself enough time,
- 2:17:27Speaker 1: he's got the skill set, and Aspinall's going to need
- 2:17:30Speaker 1: some fucking challengers. But then does, yeah, fair, fair, fair.
- 2:17:33Speaker 1: Unless Cyril Ghosn beats him, right?
- 2:17:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but then does he need, you know, I
- 2:17:37Speaker 2: always say that the time that Jon Jones took off
- 2:17:40Speaker 2: to get to heavyweight? Does he need that kind of time?
- 2:17:43Speaker 2: Because it takes a while to put on size like that.
- 2:17:46Speaker 2: It actually takes ages.
- 2:17:48Speaker 1: Not when you're over in Russia. Fair. Enough said. Real
- 2:17:54Speaker 1: difficult to get those fucking drug testing guys on a plane.
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: If they do, everybody knows when they're landing. Fair. Good
- 2:18:05Speaker 1: luck going into the bathroom while those guys pee. You
- 2:18:08Speaker 1: will accept glass of urine. I will hand it to Vitaly.
- 2:18:13Speaker 1: He handles it to you. This is clean urine. I'm
- 2:18:18Speaker 1: not accusing him of doing that, but I know that
- 2:18:22Speaker 1: for sure. Listen, I mean. It was always like the
- 2:18:26Speaker 1: joke about guys going over to Thailand. Like, why are
- 2:18:28Speaker 1: they going over to Thailand? It was good training. And also,
- 2:18:31Speaker 1: really hard to get those USADA guys on a flight. Ah. Yeah.
- 2:18:35Speaker 1: I know that. Yeah.
- 2:18:36Speaker 2: There's a lot of speculation about that. I feel so
- 2:18:37Speaker 2: ignorant to that kind of stuff. Like, I just don't
- 2:18:39Speaker 2: care enough because, like I said, I don't really have
- 2:18:42Speaker 2: a schedule for anything, even the good stuff, like the
- 2:18:46Speaker 2: things you're supposed to be doing.
- 2:18:47Speaker 1: I'm just like, eh, I'll do it. So you're not
- 2:18:50Speaker 1: like a supplement guy?
- 2:18:52Speaker 2: At all. I don't take protein shakes at all.
- 2:18:55Speaker 1: Nothing? Nothing.
- 2:18:56Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 2:18:57Speaker 1: That's crazy. No, no, no. Never. Never been into it. Multivitamins? Vitamins, yeah.
- 2:19:02Speaker 2: But again, I just forget to take them. Seriously, ADHD mind.
- 2:19:06Speaker 2: I'm just like.
- 2:19:07Speaker 1: You should have someone who makes like a little packet
- 2:19:10Speaker 1: for you. Yeah.
- 2:19:10Speaker 2: So I'm going to get my wife to do it
- 2:19:14Speaker 2: soon because she's very into that. She's very into her
- 2:19:16Speaker 2: fitness and stuff. She's a Pilates instructor. She's got her
- 2:19:20Speaker 2: own Pilates app and stuff. And she smartly, well, I
- 2:19:25Speaker 2: don't even know if she even intended it that way,
- 2:19:27Speaker 2: but she kind of blew up over COVID because she
- 2:19:31Speaker 2: set up her app at that time. And now everyone's
- 2:19:33Speaker 2: at home.
- 2:19:34Speaker 1: Oh, perfect timing. You know what I mean? It's just
- 2:19:35Speaker 1: perfect timing.
- 2:19:36Speaker 2: And she just blew up her app called Cloud9 Collective.
- 2:19:39Speaker 2: And she does Pilates for women. Have you ever done
- 2:19:42Speaker 2: Pilates yourself?
- 2:19:43Speaker 1: Yes, I have.
- 2:19:44Speaker 2: Bro, I did a video with her and got her
- 2:19:46Speaker 2: to train some MMA training. And then she's like, okay,
- 2:19:49Speaker 2: you come and do this for lives.
- 2:19:50Speaker 1: She killed me. It's a lot more difficult than I thought.
- 2:19:52Speaker 1: It is so much. But I didn't know. Weird muscles. Yeah.
- 2:19:55Speaker 1: Inside of your leg muscles.
- 2:19:56Speaker 2: But that's what's actually helped with a lot of my,
- 2:19:58Speaker 2: the rehab side. Because it's those muscles that we bypass.
- 2:20:02Speaker 1: We go to the big muscles.
- 2:20:03Speaker 2: Yeah, we want to work these muscles. And it's all
- 2:20:05Speaker 2: those little ones that are not getting worked. And those
- 2:20:07Speaker 2: are the ones that are injured.
- 2:20:08Speaker 1: Stabilizers. Stabilizers. Yeah. And I didn't know that it was....
- 2:20:13Speaker 2: A man, I forget his first name, but called something
- 2:20:15Speaker 2: Pilates who started it for men in war to help
- 2:20:20Speaker 2: recover guys in war to get them back out to war.
- 2:20:24Speaker 2: But it's become such a female-led sport.
- 2:20:29Speaker 1: Well, that goes to speak about what I was talking
- 2:20:30Speaker 1: about with the Russians and being technical. You know who
- 2:20:32Speaker 1: was really into Pilates? Kovalev. Remember when Kovalev was the
- 2:20:36Speaker 1: light heavyweight champion? Yeah, yeah. The crusher. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:20:39Speaker 1: He was fucking everybody up. He was big in the Pilates.
- 2:20:40Speaker 1: Big in the Pilates. He was doing Pilates all the time.
- 2:20:43Speaker 1: And everyone was like, wait a minute, what? That guy?
- 2:20:45Speaker 2: The strength you can get from anywhere because, like I said,
- 2:20:47Speaker 2: those smaller muscles that help facilitate the bigger muscles.
- 2:20:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Like, it's crazy. It's the same people that, like,
- 2:20:55Speaker 1: look down on yoga. Like, bitch, go to a 90-minute
- 2:20:58Speaker 1: hot yoga class. Go do that. Okay, I did that, yeah.
- 2:21:00Speaker 1: It's hard.
- 2:21:01Speaker 2: And I was like, yeah, I'm going to go to
- 2:21:02Speaker 2: a yoga, a hot yoga. You know, I was more
- 2:21:04Speaker 2: thinking just it's nice to kind of get the sweat
- 2:21:06Speaker 2: going and stuff. I remember the lady, she's like, oh, yeah,
- 2:21:08Speaker 2: go to, if you go to that side of the room,
- 2:21:10Speaker 2: it's quite hot. So, you know, if you're new to it,
- 2:21:13Speaker 2: just go to this side of the room. And I
- 2:21:14Speaker 2: was like, this woman, whatever, man.
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: Get over that hot side. Let me go to that
- 2:21:18Speaker 1: hot side.
- 2:21:19Speaker 2: And she's like, oh, you know, if you ever feel
- 2:21:21Speaker 2: faint at all, you don't have to continue. You can
- 2:21:22Speaker 2: kind of just sit down. I'm just like, what is
- 2:21:24Speaker 2: she talking about?
- 2:21:25Speaker 1: It's not that hot in here. Google me, lady. Bro.
- 2:21:30Speaker 1: I think like three.
- 2:21:30Speaker 2: Moves later, I slowly just like moved the mat.
- 2:21:34Speaker 1: I didn't want to go too far.
- 2:21:37Speaker 2: But I moved from the hot side of the room
- 2:21:39Speaker 2: to like the middle-ish, closer to that side. And then
- 2:21:42Speaker 2: there was one move I was just stretching and I
- 2:21:44Speaker 2: literally just got lightheaded.
- 2:21:45Speaker 1: I was like, shit, this is real. It's real. It's real.
- 2:21:49Speaker 1: You see all those little old ladies in there and
- 2:21:51Speaker 1: you think, oh, this is easy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: It's difficult.
- 2:21:54Speaker 2: My wife is strong as hell and I'm just like, yes,
- 2:21:57Speaker 2: it has to be from that. Like she, and when
- 2:22:00Speaker 2: I do this, I did a session with her this
- 2:22:01Speaker 2: morning because she does some great sessions. Like when I
- 2:22:04Speaker 2: do sessions with her, like she kills it. And she's,
- 2:22:06Speaker 2: I have to say, she's smart in how she's done
- 2:22:10Speaker 2: it as well because actually something I didn't know because she's,
- 2:22:13Speaker 2: on her rap, she's done a cycle syncing specifically for women.
- 2:22:17Speaker 2: I didn't realize that women have a, obviously I knew
- 2:22:19Speaker 2: women 28 day cycle and men have a 20, a
- 2:22:23Speaker 2: 24 day cycle, um, 24 hours and they have 28 days.
- 2:22:30Speaker 2: So there's specific times that they should be training, uh,
- 2:22:34Speaker 2: harder than they shouldn't be training or they should be
- 2:22:36Speaker 2: doing this and should be doing that.
- 2:22:37Speaker 1: Based on biometrics? Based on just them as yet. Time
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: of the cycle of the month. Time of the cycle
- 2:22:41Speaker 1: of the month.
- 2:22:42Speaker 2: But again, in my head, I'm like, there's girls that
- 2:22:44Speaker 2: are training our class and they have to train and
- 2:22:46Speaker 2: do everything that we do. But we don't, we forget
- 2:22:51Speaker 2: that we're just doing it based on, men can kind
- 2:22:52Speaker 2: of just keep going.
- 2:22:53Speaker 1: Well, women should think about that when they're scheduling fights. 100%.
- 2:22:55Speaker 2: That should be a thing. And as I said, she
- 2:22:58Speaker 2: did it for Pilates. And I looked into it and
- 2:23:00Speaker 2: I was like, oh, there's actually... This is like even
- 2:23:03Speaker 2: down to ice baths.
- 2:23:05Speaker 1: Great for you. Not for women though. Really? Not all
- 2:23:08Speaker 1: the time.
- 2:23:08Speaker 2: But if you look into it, so there's specific times
- 2:23:10Speaker 2: it's okay for them, but they shouldn't put their body
- 2:23:13Speaker 2: under that kind of stress in the same way that
- 2:23:15Speaker 2: we can.
- 2:23:17Speaker 1: Oh, that's interesting. Yeah.
- 2:23:18Speaker 2: So there's loads of, when I started looking at certain,
- 2:23:20Speaker 2: there's loads of things that we forget that a lot
- 2:23:22Speaker 2: of times it's done from a male point of view.
- 2:23:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:23:26Speaker 2: Forgetting that we're just different.
- 2:23:28Speaker 1: I never would have thought about that in terms of
- 2:23:30Speaker 1: their menstrual cycle and fighting. But of course. Of course.
- 2:23:33Speaker 1: Of course. Of course. Wow.
- 2:23:36Speaker 2: So yeah, she's put it on so individuals can actually
- 2:23:38Speaker 2: be like, it was scheduled and say, look, you're good,
- 2:23:41Speaker 2: specifically for you, are good to train intensely today. Or no,
- 2:23:45Speaker 2: you need a very relaxed session. And these videos, she's
- 2:23:47Speaker 2: got hundreds of videos on her thing that will come
- 2:23:49Speaker 2: up and be like, this is for you.
- 2:23:50Speaker 1: This was for you. This was for you.
- 2:23:52Speaker 2: But again, it just made me think about the women
- 2:23:53Speaker 2: in MMA, like you said.
- 2:23:56Speaker 1: Yeah. It's the same thing scheduling.
- 2:23:57Speaker 2: Even down to, for them, weight cutting, you know, at
- 2:24:01Speaker 2: a certain time, going for their luteal phase, they're holding weight.
- 2:24:03Speaker 1: Right. Like, it's just different. Yeah.
- 2:24:07Speaker 2: We don't have any of those issues to worry about,
- 2:24:09Speaker 2: but we get them to do the same structure as
- 2:24:12Speaker 2: we would do. That's a very good point. You know
- 2:24:15Speaker 2: what I mean? They should be more information about that,
- 2:24:19Speaker 2: even for the female fighters.
- 2:24:20Speaker 1: Yeah, they should actually be... like their coaches should be
- 2:24:23Speaker 1: setting fights up entirely based on i wonder like how
- 2:24:26Speaker 1: many fights they would have won that they there you
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: go couldn't really train right yeah because they're cramping up.
- 2:24:31Speaker 2: Yeah yeah yeah it's just we're just different.
- 2:24:35Speaker 1: When you i've seen some videos of you you do
- 2:24:37Speaker 1: a lot of plyometric stuff as well right and is
- 2:24:39Speaker 1: that something you've always.
- 2:24:40Speaker 2: Done well it kind of comes with just uh this
- 2:24:44Speaker 2: is why i feel like i can bounce on my
- 2:24:45Speaker 2: calves for ages just because of that constant. And it
- 2:24:48Speaker 2: seems to be a thing now. I didn't really understand
- 2:24:50Speaker 2: it well enough. It was just kind of how I trained.
- 2:24:53Speaker 1: And now... Did you train like that from the beginning?
- 2:24:55Speaker 2: Yeah, just because of the points fighting style is a
- 2:24:58Speaker 2: lot of that shifting.
- 2:24:59Speaker 1: Right. But did you, but back then when you were
- 2:25:02Speaker 1: doing that, were you just doing the martial arts training
- 2:25:04Speaker 1: or were you doing specific plyometrics? Martial arts training with plyometrics.
- 2:25:07Speaker 2: The reason why we did plyometrics more so is because
- 2:25:11Speaker 2: we were also doing a lot of our kata's We
- 2:25:13Speaker 2: did martial gymnastics, so the forms. So I had to
- 2:25:17Speaker 2: learn how to do these crazy kicks and stuff in
- 2:25:19Speaker 2: which I would then, this is why I would try 720s.
- 2:25:22Speaker 2: Not because I just randomly decided to just throw it
- 2:25:28Speaker 2: out today. It's because we were drilling them just for
- 2:25:30Speaker 2: kata though. And I was like, well, if I can
- 2:25:33Speaker 2: do it for kata, then surely I can find the
- 2:25:35Speaker 2: time to throw it when I'm fighting. And I would
- 2:25:39Speaker 2: be brave enough to try and attempt these things in
- 2:25:43Speaker 2: the points fighting world. And yeah, there's a couple of kicks.
- 2:25:47Speaker 2: I keep telling people, there's a couple of kicks that
- 2:25:48Speaker 2: even for me, I haven't even shown you what I
- 2:25:50Speaker 2: can actually do yet, but there's a couple of kicks
- 2:25:52Speaker 2: that I know I can land. And usually it's easier
- 2:25:57Speaker 2: on people that are well-trained. So usually the better fighter,
- 2:26:00Speaker 2: it's actually easier to hit them just because they are
- 2:26:03Speaker 2: very traditional. They're very well-trained. They have patterns that I
- 2:26:06Speaker 2: can pick up on. I'm like, ah, you're going to
- 2:26:08Speaker 2: step this way and you're going to do that.
- 2:26:10Speaker 1: Ah. And I always tell people, I.
- 2:26:12Speaker 2: Call it attaching strings. The first minute of the fight,
- 2:26:17Speaker 2: not too much happens for me because I'm faking this, that, that.
- 2:26:20Speaker 2: But every time I'm faking something, you twitch. I'm like, ah,
- 2:26:24Speaker 2: this means this.
- 2:26:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you twitch.
- 2:26:26Speaker 2: This means this, this. And I'm just attaching strings to you.
- 2:26:29Speaker 2: So now I'm moving you. You just became Pinocchio. But that,
- 2:26:39Speaker 2: and that's important. This is why, like you said, all
- 2:26:41Speaker 2: those fakes, but those fakes mean something.
- 2:26:43Speaker 1: Yes. You know what I mean?
- 2:26:44Speaker 2: I'm getting, like you said, I'm getting that information from you.
- 2:26:46Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:26:48Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, he wants that. If I do this, he
- 2:26:49Speaker 2: wants that.
- 2:26:50Speaker 1: Okay, I see it. Okay, perfect. Now I got it. Yeah,
- 2:26:52Speaker 1: that's what's so important for a casual fan to understand. Yeah.
- 2:26:55Speaker 1: That there's a whole game taking place that if you
- 2:26:58Speaker 1: could play it, you would understand what he's doing. Yeah.
- 2:27:00Speaker 1: But you're just seeing movement, random movement. You're like, hit him!
- 2:27:04Speaker 1: Hit him! Why don't you hit him? Meanwhile, if you knew,
- 2:27:07Speaker 1: you'd be watching something beautiful. Yeah, exactly. You're watching, you know,
- 2:27:11Speaker 1: a dance. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Snake charming. That's it. Yeah.
- 2:27:14Speaker 1: It's part of the identity, man.
- 2:27:16Speaker 2: Part of the identity.
- 2:27:19Speaker 1: I try to tell people, though, but yeah. Do you
- 2:27:21Speaker 1: know when you're fighting again? Have they given you any
- 2:27:23Speaker 1: kind of an idea?
- 2:27:24Speaker 2: Like I said, I pushed out information. I keep chasing
- 2:27:26Speaker 2: after to kind of find out. I haven't really heard
- 2:27:28Speaker 2: too much back. They're announcing some fights now, right?
- 2:27:31Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying.
- 2:27:31Speaker 2: It feels like things are slowly starting to happen.
- 2:27:35Speaker 1: Still waiting. So, Protest is going to fight Leon Edwards. Yeah,
- 2:27:39Speaker 1: that's been confirmed. 170, which is what you're looking at
- 2:27:41Speaker 1: the most, right? Yeah. I want to get back. I
- 2:27:43Speaker 1: know I'm big now. You can make it, though. I've
- 2:27:46Speaker 1: seen you make it. I can make it. I want
- 2:27:47Speaker 1: to get back down. And you just giant advantages at 170. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:27:49Speaker 2: I want to get back down to 170. Just because,
- 2:27:52Speaker 2: like I said, I feel like, I think JDM's a great,
- 2:27:55Speaker 2: an amazing fighter.
- 2:27:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:27:57Speaker 2: I just feel stylistically I can beat him.
- 2:28:00Speaker 1: Well, it's a very good style for stand-up for you. Yeah.
- 2:28:03Speaker 1: That's for sure. I mean, he's very complete. Very complete. Yeah,
- 2:28:06Speaker 1: he's very, very good. Yeah, very complete. I really like
- 2:28:09Speaker 1: his style.
- 2:28:09Speaker 2: And very smart. You can tell he's very smart. Like,
- 2:28:11Speaker 2: as in specific to the opponent, he's like, okay, yeah.
- 2:28:14Speaker 2: But like I said, that's one of the advantages. It's
- 2:28:16Speaker 2: like you're not going to have, it's going to be
- 2:28:17Speaker 2: very difficult for you, even as smart as you are,
- 2:28:19Speaker 2: to figure that out.
- 2:28:21Speaker 1: Well, that's why it's exciting for you with any stand-up fighter.
- 2:28:25Speaker 1: As soon as you're fighting a guy who likes to
- 2:28:26Speaker 1: stand up, it's like, are you sure? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:28:28Speaker 1: Are you sure you like to stand up? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:28:30Speaker 1: I tell people this all the time. Welcome to this
- 2:28:32Speaker 1: new thing that you've never experienced before. I make these.
- 2:28:36Speaker 2: Guys wrestlers, man. I make all these stand-up guys wrestlers.
- 2:28:39Speaker 2: And everyone's all going to strike with you.
- 2:28:41Speaker 1: Well, listen, brother, I can't wait to see you in
- 2:28:42Speaker 1: there again. I'm a giant fan. I'm so happy you're
- 2:28:45Speaker 1: at the UFC now. And I know you do a
- 2:28:47Speaker 1: lot of stuff online, so tell people how to find you. Yeah, so....
- 2:28:51Speaker 2: Again, it's all the social media, Michael Venom page, everything, Instagram.
- 2:28:56Speaker 2: I don't really do Twitter as much or X, sorry.
- 2:29:00Speaker 2: My Facebook, YouTube, I'm doing a lot of stuff. ITM, actually,
- 2:29:05Speaker 2: I'm doing a film company. I always try to set
- 2:29:08Speaker 2: myself up for the next stage. My creative mind won't stop.
- 2:29:13Speaker 1: You want to make movies? I'm making movies.
- 2:29:15Speaker 2: I've already made two short movies.
- 2:29:18Speaker 1: Wow. And again, the same. Congratulations. That's awesome. Thank you.
- 2:29:21Speaker 1: Thank you. And I want to get to acting as well.
- 2:29:23Speaker 1: What are they about?
- 2:29:24Speaker 2: So the first one was actually about an athlete's mindset.
- 2:29:28Speaker 2: One thing that I find with films, I think people
- 2:29:29Speaker 2: are lazy watchers nowadays. They find just explosion, explosion, action, action, action,
- 2:29:34Speaker 2: and crap storyline. But I want story telling again. And
- 2:29:39Speaker 2: this one is just more about an athlete's mindset. I
- 2:29:43Speaker 2: did it through the eyes of a runner. just because
- 2:29:46Speaker 2: it's slightly different. I didn't want to just go down
- 2:29:48Speaker 2: the same lane as MMA. Did it for you guys
- 2:29:51Speaker 2: as a runner and just how toxic your want and
- 2:29:54Speaker 2: your need to be the best, how it can look like.
- 2:29:58Speaker 2: And again, I'll go into that one. I'll let people
- 2:30:02Speaker 2: watch that one. That one was just called Runner. The
- 2:30:04Speaker 2: next one's called Wait. And it's kind of about what
- 2:30:08Speaker 2: anxiety can look like from a position of waiting for
- 2:30:13Speaker 2: good news, and a position of waiting for bad news
- 2:30:17Speaker 2: and how the parallels work and look almost identical so
- 2:30:22Speaker 2: you're literally watching two point of views so.
- 2:30:28Speaker 1: These two so this dude's just freaking out waiting for
- 2:30:43Speaker 1: yeah He's, he's, that's fucking cool. Thank you, man. That's
- 2:30:50Speaker 1: very cool.
- 2:30:50Speaker 2: Like I said, I'm a creative mind. I need to
- 2:30:53Speaker 2: express it in some way. And I know when I leave,
- 2:30:55Speaker 2: I'm not going to be one of those guys that
- 2:30:58Speaker 2: retire and want to come back and retire.
- 2:30:59Speaker 1: I want to come back.
- 2:31:00Speaker 2: If I say I'm done, then I'm done.
- 2:31:02Speaker 1: Well, that's great.
- 2:31:03Speaker 2: And I need something else to go into.
- 2:31:05Speaker 1: Nothing better than having something you look forward to that
- 2:31:08Speaker 1: you actually enjoy and love outside of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:31:11Speaker 1: Because it's hard. It's very hard for guys to end.
- 2:31:13Speaker 1: It becomes your identity. 100%. And the thrill, you know
- 2:31:16Speaker 1: more than anybody. The thrill of doing that is above
- 2:31:19Speaker 1: and beyond almost anything else you'll experience in life.
- 2:31:21Speaker 2: My thrill is usually, for me anyway, it comes from
- 2:31:24Speaker 2: expressing art. And we call it martial artist. As much
- 2:31:28Speaker 2: as people see sometimes the blood, the knockouts and stuff,
- 2:31:32Speaker 2: it's art. Like we just watched TJ Dillashaw.
- 2:31:34Speaker 1: That was art. That was pure art. Pure art. Like
- 2:31:38Speaker 1: people don't appreciate that side of it.
- 2:31:40Speaker 2: And I'm, I love to paint pictures and I'm like,
- 2:31:43Speaker 2: how can I continue painting pictures after this stage of
- 2:31:47Speaker 2: my life?
- 2:31:47Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, yeah, cool. Well, listen, man, if you
- 2:31:49Speaker 1: make movies like you can fight, I'm in. Yeah.
- 2:31:53Speaker 2: Trust me.
- 2:31:53Speaker 1: We're doing big things. I believe you. I believe you.
- 2:31:55Speaker 2: Kishan, my camera guy, Kishan Lakhani, he's, it just worked.
- 2:31:59Speaker 1: The synergies just worked.
- 2:32:00Speaker 2: He's, directing films like he's done it for 20 years
- 2:32:03Speaker 2: and he's just unbelievable so that's awesome we're gonna do
- 2:32:05Speaker 2: some uh magical things.
- 2:32:07Speaker 1: I love hearing stuff like that i really do i
- 2:32:09Speaker 1: really do.
- 2:32:11Speaker 2: And i got uh so like i said i got
- 2:32:12Speaker 2: a gift for you anyway what do you like red
- 2:32:16Speaker 2: or red or black you can have both if you
- 2:32:17Speaker 2: want what is it just a t-shirt oh nice and
- 2:32:21Speaker 2: it just it represents uh who we are hands down
- 2:32:24Speaker 2: martial arts there's guys that do this and everyone mocks
- 2:32:27Speaker 2: all the time but it's obviously my brand so extra
- 2:32:32Speaker 2: large large large yeah let me see large here.
- 2:32:36Speaker 1: Thank you very much there you go thank you and
- 2:32:39Speaker 1: then I'm.
- 2:32:40Speaker 2: Also I got again I'm into everything but I got
- 2:32:42Speaker 2: a beef jerky company called snap down snacks for snapping
- 2:32:47Speaker 2: people wrestling snapping them down snap down snacks so snap
- 2:32:50Speaker 2: down or snack down and some snap down beautiful thank
- 2:32:54Speaker 2: you very much there you go man alright fantastic yes
- 2:32:57Speaker 2: enjoy let me know what you think.
- 2:32:58Speaker 1: How do people find that company Is it a website? Yeah,
- 2:33:00Speaker 1: just snap down on... Snap down snacks. Yeah, yeah, snap
- 2:33:03Speaker 1: down snacks. Athlete fuel. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:33:04Speaker 2: And when you're... If you're in the UK next or
- 2:33:08Speaker 2: when you're in the UK next, let me know. I've
- 2:33:10Speaker 2: got a Mexican restaurant as well, Ixchel.
- 2:33:13Speaker 1: Wow, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's great. You're invested in
- 2:33:16Speaker 1: all kinds of things.
- 2:33:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:33:17Speaker 1: Beautiful.
- 2:33:18Speaker 2: We actually had Kendall's... Kendall Jenner's 818 Tequila featuring in there.
- 2:33:24Speaker 2: We're going to have Jason Momoa come in end of
- 2:33:28Speaker 2: this month with his vodka, Miele vodka.
- 2:33:32Speaker 1: Look at you. Moving and shaking. We're everywhere. All right, man.
- 2:33:38Speaker 1: I'll see you this weekend. Thank you for doing this.
- 2:33:39Speaker 1: Thank you, man. My pleasure. I really enjoyed it. I
- 2:33:42Speaker 1: did too. Bye, everybody.
