- 0:07The St. Louis Cardinals faced the Pittsburgh Pirates for a Saturday night game at Three Rivers Stadium on August 14th, 1971.
- 0:15The Cardinals made it to the World Series in 1967 and 68, but their dominance was fading, having lost the division to the Pirates in both 1970 and 71.
- 0:25They entered this game trailing the Pirates by five and a half games and manager Red Shane Deest would send Bob Gibson to the mound to try and help the Cardinals tighten the pennant race in the NL East.
- 0:34Pittsburgh, on the other hand, was on the rise. Having lost the NLCS in 1970 to the Reds, they were flying high in 1971 with a 71-48 record entering this game.
- 0:46They are managed by Danny Myrtog as 11th season as skipper of the Pirates. This audio recording is from the St. Louis Radio broadcast featuring announcers Jack Buck and Jim Woods.

- 3:44Chris Pelikoudis will call the plays at third and here come the Pirates
- 3:55This ballgame is about to start with Matty Alou at the plate
- 3:59Against the right hander Bob Johnson the big guy fire strike call and he is a big guy is from our broadcast
- 4:05territory
- 4:07He's from Aurora, Illinois lives in Lamont, Illinois
- 4:13He delivers and alou on a change-up hits a foul ball which goes out of play for strike two
- 4:20Cash is playing third base chased over there couldn't get it Hernandez. The shortstop was also over there
- 4:27Maseroski's playing second tonight with Bob Robertson at first
- 4:31Stargell and left Oliver in center and D'Avilio on right
- 4:33Milton May giving the sign two strikes to count on alou who has seen a lot of off-speed pitches in this series
- 4:40Here it comes off-speed pitch fouled back onto the screen keeping it strike two
- 4:45It'll be alou's size Warren Cruz here in the Cardinal first
- 4:50Sure, you're aware of the fact that the Cardinals have won both games of this series
- 4:56And are now within six of the Pirates trying to make it five
- 4:59Here it comes Matty swings and drills that foul into the seats look out
- 5:05It's still strike two
- 5:11The early starting time here of
- 5:14705 on a Saturday night a good crowd on hand and a sellout for tomorrow here at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh
- 5:22Cardinals won three to two the night before last and two to nothing last night
- 5:26Johnson looks in gets the sign he's thrown nothing but strikes to alou ball one is outside
- 5:35And another off-speed pitch
- 5:39Harry Wendell step the plate umpire
- 5:42Olsen at first Gorman at second base and Pellicudis third the pitch and it's low inside that makes it two and two
- 5:50Bob Gibson will be the Cardinal pitcher in this ballgame Bob Johnson on the mound for the Pirates
- 5:56His record is seven and seven
- 6:00He fires fastball fouled back and out of play
- 6:04And it's still two and two
- 6:07Johnson has pitched one shutout. He has six complete games
- 6:11An earned run average of four and a half
- 6:132.21 he's been tagged for 14 homers more than anybody else on the pirate staff
- 6:20His two two delivery to Mattie alou
- 6:23Is on the way low for ball three
- 6:28Low inside breaking ball on a full count of three and two
- 6:33Be great if the Cardinals could get out in front again early to
- 6:36Sort of give the Pirates the idea that it could happen again tonight
- 6:42the pitch
- 6:45fastball
- 6:47Low ball four and the catcher may thought they had him struck out
- 6:50He threw the ball down to third
- 6:53And he and the plate umpire get into it and the pitcher Bob Johnson comes down off the mound
- 6:59a
- 7:00highly
- 7:02A highly
- 7:07Debatable ball four call puts alou on and we're talking from a pirate player viewpoint
- 7:14They thought the pitch had the strike zone at the knees the batter is Sizemore with their lou on base
- 7:21That's the way the ballgame starts
- 7:23Sizemore hitting 267 has an eight game hitting streak going
- 7:30The pitch to him is over but low ball one
- 7:35Johnson was way out ahead of alou no balls two strikes ended up losing him
- 7:40And that gives Sizemore hitting room through the right side Robertson is holding against the runner
- 7:45A lead by Matty i'll throw over there and he's back
- 7:54Milton may is doing the catching he's a left-handed batter
- 8:00The backup man for sanguine alou with the lead
- 8:04The pitch to sizemore and a foul trying to go to right field off to the right it goes one ball one strike
- 8:10The on deck batter is jose cruz
- 8:16Some of our left-handed hitters like cruz and haig are due to pop the ball
- 8:23It's been a long time since we've seen the long ball off their bats maybe tonight will be the night
- 8:28They're playing straight away in the pirate outfield the one one pitch
- 8:31Coming to sizemore and it's inside it almost hit him ball two
- 8:35Spun him out of there
- 8:41Johnson is not a real control artist
- 8:44Although his base on balls total is not very high. He's walked 40 now and 126 innings
- 8:52Alou with the lead
- 8:54There he goes and a fly ball into the right field corner chased by the right fielder dolliver leo makes a running catch
- 8:59Throws the first alou gets back. Oh, he made a good play on that ball
- 9:06With the right-handed batter up there sizemore
- 9:11The ball was hit right down the right field line about five feet off the line and double leo on the run
- 9:18Caught up with the ball and made the catch
- 9:21Alou had to scramble to get back and had that the leo missed that ball. It would have been big big trouble for pittsburgh
- 9:27That ball would have gone down into the corner a run would have scored and sizemore probably would have ended up at third
- 9:34But davalio made the catch
- 9:37The hitter is cruz with the runner at first and one out
- 9:41Tossed to first the runner back
- 9:43Sizemore got a bad break on his ball. It just hung up long enough for davalio to get there
- 9:49There cruz has four home runs the pitch
- 9:57Low inside ball one and johnson thought he had a strike again
- 10:01He's uh again at odds with the plate umpire wendell stuc
- 10:08Cruz average is 248 alou at first one out
- 10:12He's a little bit better than the other one
- 10:16Maddie takes his lead the pitch swing and a foul trying to go to left that evens the count one and one
- 10:25Well, the pirates have their big man back in the lineup tonight willy starjewel who sat out last evening's encounter
- 10:33They're not playing clementi and sanguine this evening
- 10:35The
- 10:40Cruz waiting
- 10:43I'll throw the first and alou gets back
- 10:47Johnson doesn't appear to have a
- 10:51Real good motion toward first
- 10:54Looks like they might be able to run on him alou leads away not going cruz takes it outside ball two two and one
- 11:01Johnson is not missing by a very large margin two balls in a strike
- 11:14Cardinals hit and run on this couch with size more at the plate
- 11:20Alou is not going and the pitch is a strike call that the letters outside edge two and two
- 11:25Two down deck batter is tori
- 11:32Gibson will be the cardinal hurler tonight trying for his 11th win
- 11:42Maddie alou leads away
- 11:46He's going a swing and a pop flying in a short left field down the line chased by cash
- 11:51And he dropped the ball. It's fair and both runners are safe. He dropped the ball with his back to the plate and it's a base hit
- 12:00Alou stopped at second. He had no chance to go to third because the ball was smack in cash's glove
- 12:07And then popped out
- 12:09The left fielder starjewel couldn't get there in time to help him out and tori is up with two men on base and one out
- 12:15With a left-handed batter up there star joe was playing off the line somewhat
- 12:22He couldn't get in quickly enough to make the catch
- 12:26And went off cash his glove and it's a base hit now alou's at second
- 12:31Cruz at first and tori the batter. He's leading the league again by one point over glenn beckert batting 355
- 12:40They play him to pull
- 12:42Johnson is set
- 12:44his pitch
- 12:46Steer right call at the knees
- 12:51Tori 17 homers 94 runs batted in
- 12:57Pirate infield a double play depth
- 13:00Mazurowski trying to keep alou close at second base
- 13:03It wouldn't be surprising to see maddie run the pitch sidearm curve low outside one and one
- 13:09We'll have another side armor going tomorrow bruce keason
- 13:18Reggie cleveland will work for the cards
- 13:23Tori up there with two men on base and one man out here in the first inning
- 13:28Alou leads away. There's a ground ball base hitter to right field and alou will score
- 13:32He rounds third heads for the plate. There goes cruz to third. He's safe and the cardinals lead one to nothing
- 13:41Tori slapped it through the right side and the cardinals have jumped out in front in this ballgame
- 13:47Alou scored cruz raced to third
- 13:51Tori gets his 95th run batted in of the year
- 13:54The cardinals lead one to nothing and the batter is ted simons
- 13:58And there goes a pitcher turning down to the pirate bullpen
- 14:05Bob moose gets up and starts to throw
- 14:10Ted simons can add to the lead. He's hitting 306. He has three home runs
- 14:16The infield back with cruz at third and tori at first
- 14:20They lead off
- 14:22The pitch to simons a swing and a shot to right. That's a base hit that makes it two to nothing and tori stops at second
- 14:29An rbi single for simons his 56th run batted in the cardinals and gibson are out in front by two
- 14:38Cruz scored
- 14:41Three hits in a row by cruz tori and simons
- 14:44It's a two to nothing ballgame and the batter is joe hay boy would we like to see joe get a hold of one
- 14:53He had really do joe's average is down to 209 10 home runs most of which he gathered very early in the season
- 15:02And the truth about it is he got those home runs
- 15:06Early before the pitchers were real sharp and started to get that off-speed stuff over to him
- 15:10Oh if he could rip one now there are two men on with one man out
- 15:17Tori at second and simons at first
- 15:20Bob johnson of the pirates is on the ropes
- 15:25A look in by the big right hander
- 15:28The first pitch to joe hay a change up is low ball one and that helps they when the pitcher cannot get that slow stuff over
- 15:35all one
- 15:37One
- 15:42Two to nothing the cardinals lead in the first on a walk in three singles
- 15:49Johnson ready to pitch to haig here it is and it's low for ball to the undecider is kubiak
- 15:57Johnson looks in at the umpire again
- 16:00Pauses out there on the mound
- 16:02The second pitch to joe hay
- 16:06Now steps on and looks in the count is two balls no strikes they play haig to pull the ball
- 16:14Here it comes
- 16:16Oh
- 16:30Well, I tried to talk him into that one
- 16:33And with a count of two balls and no strikes haig homers with two on
- 16:38And mix it a five run cardinal first you forget to worry me when you do things like that. You got est or something
- 16:44I believe might head for vegas
- 16:49Here comes danny murtaugh out of the dugout
- 16:52Hey with a count of two balls and no strikes drilled one a line drive over the fence and right
- 16:58Driving in tori driving in seven
- 17:01Giving joe 11 home runs for the year
- 17:0437 runs batted in
- 17:08And it's five to nothing here in the first
- 17:10The only put out was on the fine play but navali oh
- 17:14Yeah, you look back on that and think how many runs we might have in the bank
- 17:17I'm delighted with the five but uh not devilio come on to make that circus robbery on the ball hit by ted sizemore
- 17:25We might have six or seven in the bank
- 17:27Danny murtaugh made an awfully slow walk to the mound
- 17:31Luz has been warming up very long
- 17:33But it may be that the smiling arishman from chester, pennsylvania has seen enough of big
- 17:38Bob johnson on this evening and that's what harry wendell said has gone out to find out
- 17:43We've got a long way to go on this ball game and against a tough pirate hitting ball club
- 17:47But the cardinals have bob gibson on the mound
- 17:50He's been staked to a five run lead on four hits
- 17:54And as I said if the cardinals can score early the pirates might get the idea that it could happen again
- 17:59Well, they surely do have that idea
- 18:02right now
- 18:04Murtaugh leaves the mound without making a pitching chain
- 18:06And bob moose continues to throw down in the bullpen
- 18:10What's the story on moose?
- 18:12Jim he's out of their rotation isn't he?
- 18:14He was away for two weeks of marine duty as I understand it jack and then he came back and he had one start and he was very ineffective in it
- 18:22And I think uh possibly danny just has him down there to try to get him back in shape and we full well know about all the military duty and how it's affected some of our men
- 18:32Well now we're going to have a pitching change and we might have a little discussion here because
- 18:37Danny murtaugh had left the mound and walked off the playing field that is beyond the foul lines
- 18:46I was under the impression jim that once the manager did that without making a pitching change
- 18:50The pitcher had to work to an additional batter
- 18:53That was my understanding too but
- 18:55It's like the umpires are going to allow this because moose has got his jacket and he's headed on the long walk in here
- 19:02So the pirates are making a pitching change here in the first stunning and they are bringing in the right-hander bob moose
- 19:10Moose has the same record as the gentleman whom he replaces on the mound
- 19:16Johnson leaves with a mark of seven and seven and moose is the same
- 19:21Well this isn't going to help johnson's earned run average any
- 19:25He pitched a third of an inning
- 19:27He allowed five runs four hits he struck out none and he walked one and it worked him for a walk sizemore line to right
- 19:35Cruz got the pop single that went off the glove actually out of the glove of the third baseman cash out in short left field
- 19:45Tori's single homerun simon's single homerun and haig hit a three run homer in the cardinals lead five to nothing
- 19:53And moose comes into the ball game and kubiak will be at the plate against him
- 19:59Murtagh and Wendelstedt the manager and the plate umpire got into a discussion out there in the mound
- 20:07And it started to get heated then the pirates made the pitching change
- 20:11Actually the plate umpire here did not call for the pitcher out of the bullpen nor did it appear that Murtagh called for the pitcher out of the bullpen
- 20:23So I guess I must be mistaken about my interpretation of that rule
- 20:29Just as when a manager makes two trips to the mound in one inning the pitcher has to come out
- 20:35If he visits the mound at any time and then leaves I thought that the pitcher had to work to another batter but I guess I'm wrong
- 20:47How the Giants do today Jim?
- 20:51They're in the 10th inning they're tied up 5-5 with McGraw going against Don Mcmahon now
- 20:57Donno who started the game for New York Brian started for the Giants but it's 5-5 last of the season
- 21:01Donno who started the game for New York Brian started for the Giants but it's 5-5 last of the 10th
- 21:07We continue now with the right-hander Bob Moose on the mound and Ted Kubiak at the plate hitting 2-29 with four homers
- 21:15He takes a ball inside
- 21:19I'll bet the Johnson the pirate starter will blame the umpire for part of his troubles because he didn't agree with about four or five calls
- 21:29And Kubiak swings grounds it to the right of Robertson off his glove he picks it up and he throws too late
- 21:35And that'll be a base hit
- 21:37The ball was hit to the right of Robertson and went off his glove he made one grab at the ball but it had rolled away
- 21:43And Kubiak is safely on with a hit the Cardinals fifth hit of the inning
- 21:48The batter is Maxwell
- 21:52I don't know if last night when we were describing the game the disappointment showed in my voice with regard to Maxville's accomplishments or lack of accomplishments
- 22:03I should point out that Maxi with that sore side is playing with his chest all taped up
- 22:09He injured his ribs in a belly flopper down at second base the other night
- 22:14And he's just having a lot of trouble swinging the bat there's a throw to first and Kubiak gets back
- 22:19So if I was a little harsh on Maxville it was because primarily of our disappointment more than anything else
- 22:27The pitch to Dow and he takes it low for a ball
- 22:35He's the eighth man to bat for the Cardinals in the inning
- 22:38Robertson is holding against Kubiak and the outfield plays Maxville around to the right
- 22:44The runner is on with one man out the pitch is made by Bob Moose Maxville takes it low outside ball two
- 22:54Cardinals trying to move within five you remember they were 14 out at one time
- 23:05Two balls no strikes the count to Maxville he's hitting 220
- 23:10The pitch to him swing and a foul trying to go to right field two and one
- 23:17Gibson kneeling in the on deck circle and he must be feeling pretty good about the situation at the moment
- 23:24He has a five run lead
- 23:32We've been underway here for about 25 minutes and the Pirates haven't swung a bat yet
- 23:36There's a throw to first and Kubiak got back was pretty close
- 23:41Two balls and a strike to Maxville the runner might be going here with one man out
- 23:46The runner is not going and there's a foul out of play two and two the ball down in the right field
- 23:54A walk to Elu Sizemore lined out Cruz a scratch single an RBI single by Torrey
- 24:01An RBI single by Simmons a three run homer by Joe Hague five nothing Cardinals
- 24:10Two and two on Maxville Moose is ready
- 24:16Pitches swing and a miss he struck him out with a high delivery
- 24:20Another second out of the inning
- 24:22A pause for identification with Bob Gibson coming up the ninth man to bat here in the Cardinal first
- 24:27This is the Cardinals baseball network
- 24:44Gibson with two home runs five runs batted in is batting 200
- 24:48There's a wild throw to first base Kubiak will go to second
- 24:52That's all he can advance the ball got stuck underneath the grandstand and a throwing error is charged
- 24:59To the pitcher on the pickoff play Kubiak moves to second as Moose threw badly to first base
- 25:08These are the kind of signs that show up when teams are jittery
- 25:15Plays they don't make not saying the Pirates are jittery but some of the signs are there
- 25:23Gibson could drive home a run now the pitch swings and bounces it to short cut off by cash
- 25:29He throws to first for the out
- 25:37Gibson is out five three to hand the Cardinal first five runs five hits one error one left
- 25:46Gibson goes to the mound and the Cardinals lead five nothing
- 25:52You did it you did it
- 25:56You want action? Senoko's the call to action

- 26:55In the Pittsburgh first Gibson has a record of 10 and 10
- 27:03He has a career mark of 22 and 12 against Pittsburgh with no record against them this season
- 27:11Their leadoff hitter will be Dave Cash Davalio will follow him and Oliver
- 27:16They have some left-handed batters in their lineup Davalio Oliver Stardew Milton May
- 27:22Gibson's wind up in first pitch is high ball one
- 27:32Cash batting 309 playing third base tonight
- 27:36Next pitch low outside ball two
- 27:44You out feel a bit to the right for the young pirate infielder
- 27:47Gibson delivers and pumps one down the middle for a called strike one two and one
- 27:56Two balls and a strike to Dave Cash
- 28:01You know the wind up the cardinal right hander fires and a foul out of play back to the right two and two
- 28:09And our best wishes to the Cardinal Football Club
- 28:14Another new coach Bob Hallways he makes his debut tonight ball three to cash three and two of the pitch was high inside
- 28:27There's a line drive into right field Hague is right there comes in as one of the three to pitch and
- 28:33Gibson working with his usual rapidity brought it home cash fly to right there's one out the batter is Davalio
- 28:43Former Cardinal longtime American Laker Davalio is batting 286 with one home run
- 28:50Clever little hitter this guy moves the ball around they play him to pull
- 28:57Franco Siak coaching a third for Pittsburgh and Don Leppard at first
- 29:04The pitch on the way Davalio takes it low for a ball
- 29:10Simmons the catcher and then field of Torrey Maxville Kubiak and Alou
- 29:19Ball outside ball to Gibson's been behind the first two hitters here he came back and got cash
- 29:26He's two and two and on Davalio with Al Oliver in the on deck circle
- 29:33Stewart called two and one Davalio taking all the way and that's a problem of being behind by five
- 29:43Gibson fires stir right to two and two another called strike two balls two strikes
- 29:57Outfield to the right the pitch is made and a fly ball to center cruises their two out
- 30:07Bob Gibson after being defeated the other evening
- 30:13That was the Monday night game against the Dodgers was really crushed
- 30:17I mean he was crushed he's a fellow doesn't show his feelings much but that defeat really hurt him
- 30:25And when the Cardinals won these first two in Pittsburgh he said I better crank myself up a pretty good ballgame
- 30:30Had not the pitch to Al Oliver inside ball one Oliver usually hits Gibson quite well
- 30:36Remember some game winning blows that the pirate outfielder has delivered against the Cardinal pitcher
- 30:44He has power to left center field Oliver batting 274 with six homers
- 30:49Gibson has retired the first two there's a fly ball to left
- 30:53Each outfielder will handle a ball Sizemore had trouble but made the catch he didn't see that ball right away
- 31:00Hey got one Cruz caught one Sizemore caught one at the end of one the Cardinals lead five to nothing
- 31:09Ice cold Bush, Bush does it like no other beer
- 31:13Hey Barney come here give me one of your ice cold beers
- 31:16Not ice cold beer ice cold Bush
- 31:22Best thing that ever happened with thirst almost sells itself you know I just go along for the walk
- 31:27You're quite a promoter Barney
- 31:29Oh no a promoter is a guy who will furnish the ocean if you'll buy the ships
- 31:34Now me I render my thirsty fans a service
- 31:36Right with the best beer in the ballpark
- 31:39I'm almost a public servant you might say
- 31:41I do say I can't imagine a ballgame without you Barney without beer
- 31:46Without Bush you mean there's as much difference as between lightning and a lightning bug
- 31:51Go get them tiger you got a lot of thirsty people waiting for you
- 31:54Tell the game good Jim I'll see you later
- 31:57Ice cold Bush, Bush does it like no other beer
- 32:02Barney the Bush man say hi next time you see him
- 32:08We go on to the second inning the Cardinals lead five nothing sent nine men to the plate in the first
- 32:13As they routed Bob Johnson and they're hitting against Bob Moose with Manny Allu leading off
- 32:20Manny walked to start the first inning merry-go-round faces Moose for the first time
- 32:26The pitch is made and it's a ball outside Moose pitching for the Bucks
- 32:36The division leading Pirates here's the pitch to Manny and it's a strike call at the letter as he looks back at the umpire
- 32:43It's one and one it'll be a loose Sizemore and Cruz here in the second
- 32:51Next pitch Brown foul rip past first base down into the corner that makes it one and two
- 32:59Benson is coaching at third for the Cardinals with Ken Boyer at first
- 33:04Pirates are playing Hernandez it's short again tonight with Gene Alley limping a bit on a bad knee
- 33:14Allu to just missed with that one two and two Allu acted like he thought he was struck out
- 33:22The Pirates were ready to throw that ball around two and two the count
- 33:26Giants won their ballgame today we'll tell you about it in a moment the pitch now is called out on strikes Moose gets him
- 33:36Moose gets his second strikeout
- 33:39There was a slider that stayed on the inside corner as Allu pulled back one out in the batter's Sizemore
- 33:46Like to see the Cardinals mount another attack because you never have too many runs here's the pitch to Ted
- 33:54Sizemore hits one a diving try by the third baseman he can't get it and Sizemore has another hit
- 34:00Sizemore singles with one man out that ball was in on the third base
- 34:05Moose gets his second strikeout
- 34:07Sizemore hits one a diving try by the third baseman he can't get it and Sizemore has another hit Sizemore singles with one man out that ball was in on him and he got around in the ball
- 34:18He's now hit safely in nine straight ballgames
- 34:25Batters Jose Cruz
- 34:27Cardinals came here with a four game losing streak riding
- 34:36Two against the Dodgers two against the Braves they could have won some of those games everybody on the ball club has agreed but that's history
- 34:45The pitch to Cruz swing and a miss he was going for the long ball
- 34:49Not just because he missed the last ball Jack but somehow Cash doesn't look comfortable at third base to me with these moves and everything
- 34:56He's an outstanding young second baseman but it's not that easy to move from position to position
- 35:02A ball in the dirt to Cruz blocked by Milton May the catcher and it's one and one
- 35:07That ball was hit to his left
- 35:12Talking about the base hit by Sizemore passed Cash went off his glove
- 35:18Throw to first the runner back
- 35:20Some infielders who can cover ground don't have that initial quickness that you need at certain positions
- 35:28Another throw to first and Sizemore is back again Cruz single his first time up on a ball that Cash couldn't handle a pop fly into short left
- 35:39Moose checks the runner
- 35:41Fires to the plate Cruz fouled it back and had his best cut one ball two strikes
- 35:50Jose had a good rip at that one but just couldn't handle it one ball two strikes five to nothing the Cardinals lead here in the second
- 35:57Gibson set the pirates down in order in the first
- 36:02Redbirds batting in the second Sizemore at first one out Cruz at the plate and Torrey up next
- 36:09Throw to first nothing doing
- 36:19Lead by the runner the pitch swing and a high fly ball to deep center field way back on the track Oliver way back he's got it
- 36:28Four hundred and ten feet away
- 36:30Back to first Sizemore and he had to hustle to get back that ball just kept going and going and going and Oliver could have gone no further
- 36:40He was back to the wall alright if Cruz pulls that ball even a little bit little more over toward the power alley instead of straight away
- 36:47This score is seven nothing in a hurry
- 36:49He really hit that ball hard but almost straight away into center field must have gone about four hundred and five feet the batters Torrey single and runners first time
- 37:02Takes a strike call a good fastball from Moose up and in in the strike zone strike one
- 37:10Five to nothing here in the second for the Cardinals Sizemore at first two out
- 37:14Torrey swings and fouls it back and two quick strikes on Joe
- 37:22Then Becker in the Cubs play at Cincinnati tonight Torrey started the day at three fifty five one point ahead of Becker who was over for last night
- 37:33Moose delivers with the runner going in a fly ball base hit in the right field Sizemore around second heads for third and he's got it
- 37:42Sizemore around second heads for third Dabalio comes up with the ball they hold the runners at first and third
- 37:49Torrey gets his second hit a line single into the right field corner and Dabalio did another good job of outfielding
- 37:56Sure does he gets over that corner pretty well but been around a while but he's still got that fine speed and a sense of where the ball is going to go
- 38:04Sizemore I think when he left the bag I think he was surprised when Benson threw the stop sign up at him
- 38:09The relay was perfectly handled however and there was no chance for Sizemore to come home on that long single by Torrey
- 38:18It's up to Simmons with two men out the Cardinals with a chance to score against Bob Moose Torrey is two for two
- 38:28Simmons single his first time up drove in a run and he could hurt the Pirates again
- 38:35The pitch swing and a bouncer to second a big hop to Mazurowski throws close out
- 38:42Mazurowski had to wait for a big hop and then he got Simmons five out of step and the Cardinals lead two
- 38:51No runs two hits there were no errors and two men left the Cardinals have left three
- 38:57The Pirates come to bat in their second the Cardinals lead five to nothing
- 39:01Nice and cold foot, Bush does it like no other man
- 39:06Hiya Barney
- 39:07Hi Jack
- 39:08Give me a bush to sit down for a while
- 39:09Oh here's stay long Jack gotta push the bush
- 39:11Those pretty girls out there make walking a pleasure
- 39:14Better not let Mrs. Barney hear that she's quite pretty herself
- 39:17And that's odd too because she's got a sister who's really ugly
- 39:20A dog huh?
- 39:21We used to figure she put her face up in curlers enough wrinkles to store a three day rain
- 39:27Every time she raised her eyebrows pulled up her stockings
- 39:31I'm sure it did
- 39:32Told a policeman once there's a man following me and I'm afraid he's crazy
- 39:36Cop took one look and said lady he's gotta be
- 39:39Bet you're glad it didn't run in the family
- 39:41Oh my yes I don't know what I'd do if they were like this Bush here
- 39:44Like Bush?
- 39:45Well you know every bottle is same
- 39:47John Tory has raised his batting average a couple of points to 357
- 39:52During the Pirates second Willie Stardew leads off and it's always nice to pitch to this big guy with the bases empty
- 39:58Stardew hitting 304 with 39 home runs
- 40:03Strike called Gibson drilled one across at the knees
- 40:09Stardew has driven in 101 runs
- 40:13There's a foul out of play and that's strike two
- 40:18Stardew didn't play last night
- 40:20Steve Carleton handled him beautifully the other evening
- 40:24Stardew sat it out against Royce
- 40:27Gibson fires and it's up and in
- 40:30Ball in
- 40:31Bob set Pittsburgh down in order in the first
- 40:34On three fly balls he's working rapidly
- 40:38Fire strike called
- 40:41He let it up and he got him
- 40:46First strike out for Gibson
- 40:49The batter is Milton May
- 40:59Gibson working with a five run lead
- 41:01Has retired four in a row
- 41:03May is a left handed batter hitting 243
- 41:06He has power he's hit four home runs
- 41:08He swings and misses chased a bad ball up and in
- 41:12I think his first major league run batted in was against Bob Gibson in the ball game last year
- 41:18It's from Gary Indiana
- 41:21Swings and fouls at back that's strike two
- 41:25Fan made a good play on the ball
- 41:30May is a six footer 175 a fine catching prospect
- 41:36The pitch on the way to him and a change up and he swings and strikes out but he'll go to first as
- 41:42Simmons couldn't handle the ball in the dirt
- 41:46The ball went back to the screen
- 41:49It's a strike out and a wild pitch
- 41:52Gibson is credited with a second strike out but a wild pitch
- 41:57Puts Milton May at first with one out
- 42:04So if Gibby gets a bad break there as Simmons was unable to
- 42:08Prevent the ball from going back to the screen
- 42:14Bob Robertson the batter is hitting 268 right handed hitter takes a ball gets away the runner does not advance
- 42:22In the way Simmons is struggling behind the plate
- 42:26You suspect that Gibson has a good breaking ball he goes out to talk with the pitcher
- 42:36Robertson is the second leading home run hitter on the Pirate Ball Club
- 42:42He's blasted 23
- 42:44The outfield deep to the left for him
- 42:48May at first one out the pitch swing and a foul and he had a home run cut it came back to the screen
- 43:01Two strike outs in the setting for Gibson but there's a runner at first with one out
- 43:08Robertson swinging late missed it one and two
- 43:12Gibson's fastball appears to be a good one
- 43:19Robertson looked over into the Cardinal dugout for some reason
- 43:23One ball two strikes to count
- 43:26The pitch struck him out with a good low breaking ball and that's three strike outs in a row for Gibson
- 43:33Now the runners at first with two out
- 43:36The batter is Mazurowski
- 43:38There was a guy strike out four and one hit
- 43:41It could happen
- 43:43Mazurowski playing second base tonight hitting 262
- 43:52First pitch to him
- 43:54A fly ball behind first foul ball a play for Alou he's got it
- 43:59Mazurowski fouled out the Pirates do nothing in the second they put a runner on and leave him on
- 44:07No runs no hits no errors a wild pitch one left at the end of two the Cardinals five Pittsburgh nothing
- 44:17Sure is warm today
- 44:19Yes ma'am that'll be ten cents total please
- 44:21I got it here somewhere in my purse
- 44:24Oh my the car stalled again
- 44:27Come on car not here please
- 44:30That's ten cents ma'am and you'll have to move your car
- 44:33How can I move it when it won't listen to me
- 44:36Now there's a solution to help prevent summer stalling new STP keep cool radiator treatment
- 44:42STP keep cool helps take the heat off your engine
- 44:45Oh Andy it seems like only yesterday that Billy was just a baby
- 44:49And now he's ready for his driver's test
- 44:51Billy sure you remember the rules
- 44:53Sure Mr. Granatelli I drive to the service station for STP oil treatment
- 44:57I'll tell the driving examiner that STP is especially important in hot summer driving
- 45:02Because it protects and lubricates better than ordinary motor oil alone
- 45:05Did you learn that in driver's education class
- 45:08No ma'am by living next door to the Granatellis
- 45:10STP is the racers' edge
- 45:16We're going to the third inning here the Cardinals lead 5-0
- 45:19And here for the play-by-play of the ball game is Jim Woods
- 45:23Thank you very much Jack and Joe Hague who struck the big blow in the first inning
- 45:27The Cardinals looking at Moose's first pitch
- 45:29It's over the outside corner for a call strike 0-1
- 45:32Hague popped his 11th home run of the year
- 45:36His first in quite a while but he picked a great spot for it I'll tell you that
- 45:40Off-speed pitch by Bob Moose and it's a ball and a strike
- 45:45Moose has not been the big winner that they hoped he would be this year
- 45:52Ball outside two balls and a strike
- 45:56He's pitched a no-hitter in the majors threw it against the Mets
- 46:00Three years ago at Shea Stadium
- 46:042-1 pitch coming from Moose and a swing by Hague and a miss strike too to enter the count
- 46:12Been seven hits in the ball game and the Cardinals have all of them
- 46:18They ride high, wide and handsome here in game three but a long ways to go
- 46:26Ball two is just a little low
- 46:31Scoreboard for ball three rather, three and two
- 46:34Not on and out
- 46:37Kubiak will be next and then Maxwell
- 46:42Pay off pitch from Bob Moose, swing on and miss strike three
- 46:46Moose gets his third strike out
- 46:48Puts one away and brings up Kubiak
- 46:51If you're looking at this game from a pirate viewpoint it might be valuable for them to be able to bring a fellow like Bob Moose through in this game
- 46:58Although he has given up three hits in the time that he has worked
- 47:02The time to get back into the pitching rotation almost seems to be a must for Pittsburgh
- 47:08I would think perhaps if he would work around, here's Kubiak waiting for the first pitch
- 47:13Sends a high fly ball out toward rather deep right but D'Avilio is on the move and he gets to it and he has it to the eye
- 47:21I think maybe he might replace Johnson in the pitching rotation because Johnson has got to be a disappointment
- 47:27He gets to get him from the Kansas City club, gave up Freddy Patek and a good catcher in Jerry May and a pretty fair hurler in Bruce Dalkanton
- 47:36And he's just not lived up to expectations
- 47:39Two men out, here's Maxwell, Maxey strike out victim his first time up
- 47:44Facing Moose
- 47:46Sends the foul back out of play
- 47:49Way, way into the upper deck
- 47:52Cubs have gone out ahead of the Reds now, 3-1 at the end of two and one half innings
- 47:59Houston and Atlanta play later, Montreal and LA later
- 48:04Maxwell takes a ball down low, Phil's in San Diego not scheduled tonight
- 48:10Minnesota drove the Tigers today, 9-4
- 48:14Oakland beat the Yankees 1-0
- 48:17The ball hit down to Mazurowski
- 48:19The Golden Glove is up and on the first, that retires the side
- 48:23No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left
- 48:26We go to the bottom of the third and it's 5-0 St. Louis
- 48:29Music
- 48:58The good times don't come easy
- 49:02Those times when a man can sit down with his fear and get back into things
- 49:07Bush makes the best of times like these because the mellow flavor of Bush
- 49:11Goes along with the good times without getting in the way
- 49:15With a long day behind you and pleasure on your mind
- 49:19Bush does it like no other be
- 49:22Visit our St. Louis brewery and we will prove it
- 49:26Music
- 49:31Jackie Hernandez playing a shortstop tonight in place of the Aileen Jean Alley
- 49:35Leads it off here, he's at 2-12, three home runs, 13 batted in
- 49:39Gibson moves the strike right by him, 0-1 the count
- 49:43Mr. Gibson has the plate pretty well zeroed in as he usually does
- 49:50Swing and a miss by Hernandez and 0-2
- 50:02A ball outside, a moving pitch that was outside, a little low, one ball, two strikes
- 50:08Pirates have had the one baserunner on the strikeout wild pitch
- 50:12And the delivery is ball two outside, 2-2 the count
- 50:18Frank Osiak the coach at third, Don Leppard at first
- 50:26Old Missouri and Bill Burton, Murtagh's first lieutenant
- 50:31Possibly the heir apparent if Danny steps down after this year because of health reasons, there's ball three
- 50:37Has not made any appearance on the field during this entire series
- 50:41Full count three and two, Gibson got ahead of Hernandez and now has got him out to the full count
- 50:47Here's the payoff pitch, he walked him, for Gibson lost Hernandez
- 50:54And Bob Moose will bat for himself
- 50:58Another great hitting pitcher, but he's going to base hit every now and then
- 51:01He's been up 33 times, he's had four hits
- 51:12Moose bounce here in the number nine spot, Alou laying in behind Hernandez and Moose fouls off the first pitch for a strike, 0-1
- 51:22Cardinals with a five run out burst, driving Bob Johnson out in the first inning
- 51:27Lead five nothing, Moose another foul straight back, 0-2 the count
- 51:33Gibby has another 0-2 count on his second hitter in a row
- 51:40He works in a hurry and Moose swings and misses strike three
- 51:44That is Gibson's fourth strikeout
- 51:47Puts one away and the top of the order comes up now, Dave Cash
- 51:50Flied out to Hague in his first effort
- 51:56We won't be back until the 27th of August
- 52:02The Cincinnati Reds will be there
- 52:04We'll be playing the Reds, the Mets, and the Cubs in the homestand coming up
- 52:12Fly ball rather deep right field, drifting back goes Hague, getting a beat on it and he makes the catch
- 52:18Two men out and Hernandez returns to first and we'll pause for station identification on the Cardinals baseball network
- 52:38Vic Devalio bats now, fly ball to Cruz, what happened to him the first time up?
- 52:44Little Vic who did the tremendous pinch hitting job for the Cardinals in the year of 1970
- 52:51Been a fine player for the Pirates, big swing and a miss, 0-1
- 52:56Came over here in the Mattie Alou deal
- 53:01He really chased a bad ball that time, it was way up and in
- 53:06Hernandez long lead, Devalio takes over low, ball one, one and one the count
- 53:15End of three and a half, Cubs three, Reds one, fine Pappas
- 53:22Gibson ready to pitch, jumped off the mound, Hernandez returns to first and Devalio gets out of the batter's box in a hurry
- 53:28Two men out here in the third inning
- 53:30Pirates are still looking for their first hit
- 53:33Foul out of play, one ball two strikes
- 53:41Big day here tomorrow, ball day of Pirate Father and Son game
- 53:48And a sellout crowd expected, there's a tap out to Maxwell, he's up with it, goes on to second just in time for the force out of Hernandez to retire the side
- 53:58No runs, no hits, no errors, one left, the end of three innings, five nothing St. Louis
- 54:03I'm sitting here thinking, trying to decide If I should go back to the town and the things I've left behind
- 54:30You can spend so much time trying to get ahead that you forget where you really are
- 54:39Take time to get back to the good and natural things of life and do it with a cold bush
- 54:45The good flavor of bush comes from the finest natural ingredients brewed the old world way
- 54:51Nothing artificial added, nothing changed, for a beer that does it like no other, naturally
- 54:59Bob Gibson just now striding out of the Cardinal dugout to come up and take his wax
- 55:09Bounced out to third in his first effort
- 55:12Facing Bob Moose who is all in relief for Bob Johnson who gave up all the Cardinal runs in the first inning
- 55:18And Gibson takes the ball, it is just outside, one ball no strikes
- 55:25Moose brings it in, took a little bit off of it and Gibson didn't get it, one ball, one strike
- 55:35Outside of the first inning this ball game has moved right along
- 55:40Usually does when Mr. Gibson goes about his business out there
- 55:47Swings again, he didn't get it, one ball, two strikes
- 55:53Bob's batting just under 200
- 55:58Not been his most productive year with the bat and he's had some good ones
- 56:05He swings, a delayed swing and a delayed call on the part of Wendelstadt and it's a strikeout
- 56:12So that is four strikeouts for Moose
- 56:16One out, top of the order up, Maddie Lou walked and struck out
- 56:27Lou Brock's hand still causing him quite a problem and it's just a day to day thing when Lou is going to be back in left field and leading off
- 56:36Moose throws a curve, it got Lou right down the middle, no balls and a strike
- 56:45Little bit low, one and one to count
- 56:51Fine as this new stadium is, they have problems around there, they have bottlenecks, they have a big crowd or even a small crowd
- 57:00There's only two ways to get in and out of this place
- 57:03And you should see the traffic pile up around here after a ball game
- 57:07No longer a smoke problem in the city as there was many, many years ago but the Mellon family spent I don't know how many millions of dollars to do away with that
- 57:17Moose delivers, fly ball, center field, back goes Oliver, in position, waiting and has it
- 57:25Two men out for the Cardinals in the fourth inning and Sizemore who is lined out and singled as the batter
- 57:36Ted's been doing a good job in left field filling in for Brock
- 57:41He hasn't been the most graceful outfielder going after one or two balls in out there but he's gotten the job done and that's what they pay off on
- 57:50Fast strike for Moose, outside corner, knee high, one and one to count
- 57:59Cash, a deep third base, eight feet off the line, here's Sizemore drilling one down the short, hops up Fernandez, the throw, that's it
- 58:08No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left
- 58:11We move into the last half of the fourth inning, St. Louis five, pirates nothing
- 58:16Andy Granatelli, it's three in the morning, you still writing commercials?
- 58:21It's tough going darling, how can we change the STP approach for summer?
- 58:25Why should we? STP oil treatment still helps cars engines run smoother, cooler, quieter, longer
- 58:31And with all the extra summer driving, people really need the extra protection of STP
- 58:36What are you writing?
- 58:38Just keep talking darling, keep talking
- 58:40STP is a racer's engine
- 58:46Leaning off here in the last half of the fourth inning, Al Oliver stands in
- 58:50He's skied one out in mid left field, it's first time up
- 58:54And he'll see what he can do with Gibson
- 58:57Pirates looking for their first hit, a strike call to the knees, one and one to count
- 59:04In Atlanta, Cook goes for Houston, Pat Jarvis for the Atlanta Braves
- 59:10Ball down low, one and one to count
- 59:15Giants one in extra inning over the melt, six to five, there's a ball bounced in behind Don Leppard at first base foul, one ball, two strikes
- 59:23Oliver, Stargell and Milt May
- 59:33Here's Gibson with rapidity working again, there's a little flipper out behind second base, Maxwell runs back, he's got it
- 59:39Oliver hit that ball on the fifths, and I mean Gibson really sawed him off
- 59:46Oh what a way, here's Stargell, took a call, third strike, and he gets a big hand every time he comes up
- 59:57Willie is so well liked around this town
- 1:00:00Ball down into the dirt, one ball, no strikes
- 1:00:03Does a lot of work with children
- 1:00:06Also has the chicken business here
- 1:00:14Hails from the Compton, California area, where so many fine athletes came from
- 1:00:19Inside to Stargell, two balls, no strikes
- 1:00:27One man out here and nobody on, with the Redbirds in front, five nothing, trying to make it three in a row, there's ball three to Stargell
- 1:00:36Gibson, behind on the count, three and nothing
- 1:00:42Fires in the next, Stargell went after it, he bangs it foul, he had the green light, five runs behind
- 1:00:48Had the green light on a three nothing pitch, Myrtol let him go
- 1:00:55Hoping I guess he could pop one out of here and try to get a little inspiration going on the part of the Pirates who just not hit at all
- 1:01:03Ball four, way up high
- 1:01:09Second walk given up by Gibson, puts the runner at first, brings up Milton May who struck out but reached first base
- 1:01:15When what was ruled a wild pitch got past Simmons
- 1:01:23Pirates have lost 13 out of their last 16
- 1:01:27Gibson getting adjusted and waiting for the young left hand hitting catcher
- 1:01:32To get fixed at the plate, and he jammed him, no foul, tip they say now, strike
- 1:01:38Pitch was way inside and just barely kicked the bat, and it's all in one
- 1:01:50The old Cardinal Nellie Briles is up and throwing in the Pirate bullpen, Milton May takes the ball down low, one and one
- 1:02:02Had one run now in 21 innings since the Cardinals have been in town, high pop up left field
- 1:02:09Sizemore goes drifting over toward left center, weaves around, got it
- 1:02:16Sizemore likes to run to the spot, gets a pretty good beat on the ball, runs to the spot and then he looks for it
- 1:02:23Two men out to Bob Robertson, struck out his first time up
- 1:02:28Starjol the runner at first, two away, and Gibson and the Cardinals leading 5-0 in the fourth
- 1:02:41Fastball, strike call to the letters of the big muscle man from Mount Savage, Maryland
- 1:02:50Talk about some of the strong men of the game, this guy ranks right up there with them
- 1:02:55Check swing, a foul, strike, and it's all in two, he did not get a cut that time
- 1:03:05Briles has warmed up a couple of times, we're hoping that they can get something started here and get down into the bottom end of their batting order
- 1:03:13Where he'd be forced to hit for Moose, but Mr. Gibson is not about to let that happen it would seem
- 1:03:20Two strikes on Robertson, and the pitch foul, back out of play, he had a cut that time
- 1:03:270-2
- 1:03:32Gibson has given up two walks and one runner reached on the wild pitch and that's all the Pirates have had so far tonight
- 1:03:39Through the first three and two-thirds innings
- 1:03:42Gibson brings it in, wide of the mark, one and two the count
- 1:03:54Bob Robertson pounds the plate, Gibson gets quickly ready, sends it in and strikes Robinson out again
- 1:04:01Robertson took a big healthy cut, got nothing, and Gibson has five strikeouts in the book
- 1:04:06No runs, no hits, no errors, one left, the end of four innings, Cardinals five, Pirates nothing
- 1:04:130-2
- 1:04:34Wherever it's going, part of you goes too, heading for open spaces and places you've never seen
- 1:04:48Bush goes there too, travels to the best bobbin hops wherever they're grown, brings them back and brews them slowly into a full mellow beer
- 1:05:03Only the best for Bush, because Bush does it like no other beer
- 1:05:13Fifth inning now, the Cardinals have out hit the Pirates, seven to nothing, lead in the ballgame five to nothing
- 1:05:20with Jose Cruz leading off against Bob Moose who has pitched scoreless baseball over three and two-third innings
- 1:05:28Moose has registered four strikeouts since we're leaving Bob Johnson
- 1:05:33He's a hard-throwing right-hander and he pitches to Cruz who is singled and lined out very deep to center field
- 1:05:39Left-handed batter in the first pitch, strike called, he kept it away, caught the corner, strike one
- 1:05:48Cubs lead Cincinnati three to one in the bottom of the fifth at Cincinnati
- 1:05:53Fly ball fouled out of the left field corner by Cruz, nice catch mister
- 1:06:00Philadelphia and San Diego have the day off because of a San Diego football game, Giants beat the Mets today six to five
- 1:06:09Houston and Atlanta later, Montreal and Los Angeles later, and that's the National League
- 1:06:16With a count of own two, Cruz grounds one hard to second, Maseroski has it, throws him out, Cruz hustling all the way, was up by a step
- 1:06:27As he was retired by Maseroski, one, four, seven, eight in a row retired by Bob Moose
- 1:06:38Cardinals lead five nothing and here's Joe Torre who drove in the first run of the ballgame
- 1:06:44He has two singles and he's batting three fifty eight so he's picked up three points tonight
- 1:06:50Leading the league again, swings and misses the breaking ball, he got a base hit against Johnson, he's singled against Moose
- 1:07:03The right-hander pitches, misses, low outside, one and one
- 1:07:13Outfield playing Torre to pull the ball, he leans back from ball two inside, two and one
- 1:07:20Torre is a fearless hitter at the plate, they move him off the plate, they hit him with pitches, they don't move him away
- 1:07:31Two balls and a strike to count
- 1:07:35And the pitch on the way, low outside, ball three, three and one
- 1:07:43With Ted Simmons the next batter
- 1:07:47We're in the Cardinal fifth and the Cardinals lead five nothing
- 1:07:50We play the Pirates again tomorrow afternoon, Reggie Cleveland against Bruce Keeson
- 1:07:56Torre takes a strike, a breaking ball
- 1:08:00The ballgame here starts at one thirty five local time
- 1:08:05Our dugout broadcast time tomorrow, St. Louis time will be twelve twenty and twelve thirty for the ballgame
- 1:08:13If the Cardinals can win this one they'll be going for the sweep
- 1:08:17Three two pitch to Torre, swing and a foul, rolling back into the Cardinal dugout
- 1:08:25Cardinal scored five in the first, that's all the scoring in this game to this point
- 1:08:39Bob Moose pitching to Joe Torre, swings and a base hit to left and he's three for three
- 1:08:47That ball was up and in and Torre ripped it into left field
- 1:08:51He is three for three in the ballgame tonight
- 1:08:56And all three of his hits have been screamers
- 1:08:59One a hard hit ground ball through the right side
- 1:09:04The other a line drive single into right, this one he pulled into left
- 1:09:08The batter is Simmons, Ted has won for two
- 1:09:17Drove in a run with a first inning single and then against Bob Moose he grounded out, he's up there batting left handed
- 1:09:22The pitch, swing and a line drive into left and the left fielder coming hard, Stardell he fumbled the ball
- 1:09:29Torre rounds second and heads for third, Simmons going for second, they're both safe
- 1:09:35It's a double, Stardell came hard in left field and he's a pretty good outfielder
- 1:09:43He almost caught the ball at shoot-top level, it popped out of his glove, rolled behind him
- 1:09:48And Torre scooted on to third and Simmons went down to second base with his second hit of the night
- 1:09:54The batter is Haig and they might put him on
- 1:10:00They'll walk Haig and load the bases
- 1:10:05An intentional walk is being affected to Joe Haig
- 1:10:10It's the first pass issued by Bob Moose
- 1:10:14Cardinals with a chance to score their first runs off of this fellow will have the bases loaded one out
- 1:10:19And Ted Kubiak up there batting left handed, nothing doing in the pirate bullpen
- 1:10:24Haig hit a three run homer in the first and then struck out in the third
- 1:10:30There's ball four, Joe's three run homer in the first inning
- 1:10:35Made it five to nothing, was his eleventh homerun of the year giving him 37 runs batted in
- 1:10:41Kubiak couldn't help the Redbirds here, he got a base hit in the first
- 1:10:49Was a wasted single as it turned out then hit the ball deep to right, so he's one for two
- 1:10:57Pirates looking for the double play and they have one of the great pivot men ever
- 1:11:03Down at second base and the person of Maserowski
- 1:11:06Robertson is playing in at first even with the bag, that's surprising
- 1:11:11Swing and a smash, pissed him down into the right field corner, one run score, two runs score
- 1:11:16Haig goes out of third base, they bring him around and now they hold him up
- 1:11:20He tries to get back to third and he does and it's seven to nothing
- 1:11:26Why Robertson was playing where he was playing I do not know
- 1:11:32He was playing even with the bag at first and Kubiak doubled to his left
- 1:11:39Robertson's left, down into the corner, driving in two, making it seven to nothing
- 1:11:45Kubiak's second hit of the night, a two run double
- 1:11:50And the runners are on at second and third with one out and Maxfield is up, he's 0 for 2 and the infield is in
- 1:11:58Robertson and the others are playing up and there's a ball to Maxfield, ball one
- 1:12:03Now Max he doesn't have to extend himself to the point of swinging a bad ball
- 1:12:09Because the pitcher is coming up next because the next batter is Gibson and he can help himself
- 1:12:14It's seven to nothing, second and third, one out and a ball a little bit high, ball two
- 1:12:19They walked Haig but they lost Kubiak
- 1:12:23Nelson Brails is warming up in the pirate bullpen
- 1:12:27Now they're going to walk Maxfield and pitch to Gibson with the bases loaded
- 1:12:34When the bases were loaded and Kubiak at the plate, the pirates looking for the double play
- 1:12:40They had Robertson, or he did it on his own, playing exactly parallel with the first base bag
- 1:12:49He had no chance to get the ball, it was hit to his left, had he been deeper he might have flagged it down
- 1:12:54And he's a right handed thrower with a glove on that side and things like that make a difference
- 1:13:01Bases loaded, one out, Gibson at the plate, the Cardinals leading seven to nothing, Gibson is 0 for 2
- 1:13:08Wants a fly ball if he can get it
- 1:13:12Here is the pitch to Bob Gibson, swing and a fly ball to right, that'll get a run home
- 1:13:17Both runners tag up, D'Avilio makes the catch, here comes Haig and he scores
- 1:13:23Maxfield the second, he's safe
- 1:13:26Everybody advanced on the fly ball by Gibson making it 8 to nothing
- 1:13:32And Maxfield had to do that belly flopper again on those sore ribs on his second base
- 1:13:40Gibson's sacrifice fly makes it 8 to nothing
- 1:13:45His fly ball to right field
- 1:13:47Now they're going to walk Helleu
- 1:13:51Will be the third intentional walk of the inning, will load the bases again and they'll pitch to Sizemore
- 1:13:57Helleu is being walked
- 1:14:06The bases will be loaded with two men out
- 1:14:09Helleu is cleaning his fingernails while Moose walks in
- 1:14:16Just standing there
- 1:14:20There's ball four, Sizemore up with the bases loaded, it's been a three run inning and the Cardinals lead 8 to nothing
- 1:14:27They have Kubiak out at third, Maxfield down at second base
- 1:14:33And Sizemore is up, he's 1 for 3
- 1:14:38Gibson and the Cardinals now have an 8 to nothing lead
- 1:14:43Sizemore can add to the lead, he's the ninth man to bat in the inning
- 1:14:51Moose goes into a full windup and delivers to Ted Sizemore and it's high, ball one
- 1:15:01Two run double in this inning by Kubiak, a big blow
- 1:15:05After base hits by Torian Simmons with one man out
- 1:15:09Next pitch to Sizemore with the bases loaded, a fly ball to right, should end the inning
- 1:15:14Everybody running with two men out, Dabali onto the ball
- 1:15:17He has it and the Cardinals score three
- 1:15:20Sizemore flying to right, he's 1 for 4
- 1:15:23The Cardinals score three times on three hits
- 1:15:28No errors, three left, they have stranded six
- 1:15:33They go into the bottom of the fifth inning, Gibby and the Cardinals lead 8 to nothing
- 1:15:38Going to the Pirate fifth inning, Nelson Brials continues to throw in their bullpen
- 1:15:43For the pitcher is due to bat
- 1:15:47Here in the fifth, the batter is Mazarski, he is looking for his 2000th major league hit
- 1:15:54He swings and misses, the first pitch was a strike call, this one's strike two
- 1:16:00Now Bob Veale joins Brials in the bullpen
- 1:16:03There's a ground ball, back to Gibson on one hop, Gibby flips it to Alou, one hop
- 1:16:10Pirates have no hits in the game
- 1:16:16The batter is Jackie Hernandez, the right handed hitting shortstop from Panama
- 1:16:21He walked his first time, was left out
- 1:16:25Pirates have had three baserunners, two on walks and the other on a missed third strike
- 1:16:31Hernandez takes the ball way outside
- 1:16:37The score is 8 to nothing, Cardinals
- 1:16:45Charlie Sands, a catcher, is on deck for Pittsburgh to pinch hit
- 1:16:52Hernandez takes the strike to even the count of one and one
- 1:16:56The Cardinals have made eight runs on ten hits
- 1:17:02Stewart called a Gibson fastball and Hernandez took it, he's in the hole one and two
- 1:17:12Bob started to work again, stopped, pumps once more and fires and it's low
- 1:17:19Two balls, two strikes
- 1:17:24Gibson slows it down a little bit, turns around, checks the outfield, they're around to the right for Hernandez
- 1:17:29This fella has some power
- 1:17:31The pitch to him, high, all three
- 1:17:36Here with one out, Gibson is in danger of walking Hernandez for the second time
- 1:17:43The 3-2 pitch struck him out
- 1:17:47A letter high fastball picks him up, six strikeouts for Gibson
- 1:17:51Two on in the inning and the batter is Charlie Sands
- 1:17:59Sands, a left-handed hitter, used to belong to the Yankees, we saw him in spring training with the Pirates
- 1:18:12He's a big guy, about 6'4
- 1:18:16They're two men out, base is empty, Sands batting for Moose
- 1:18:22Here in the fifth
- 1:18:26First pitch is swinging a miss and he took a home run cut
- 1:18:31Moose pitched four and two thirds, he's charged with three runs and six hits
- 1:18:39Next pitch to Sands and it hits his bat and goes foul, that strike two, he was ducking an inside pitch
- 1:18:45Moose walked three men, they were all intentional walks
- 1:18:50And while he was in there, he had four strikeouts
- 1:18:53Either Veal or Brials will be their new pitcher
- 1:18:57Sands takes the ball low inside, a breaking ball
- 1:19:02He had to do everything in his power to keep from swinging at that one
- 1:19:12Sands is up there with two men out, the pitch to him and a swing and a miss, the breaking ball got him
- 1:19:19Gibson now has seven strikeouts and has not allowed a hit over the first five innings
- 1:19:25And at the end of five, the Cardinals lead Pittsburgh 8-0

- 1:20:21At the sign of the action gasoline, Sunoco
- 1:20:27Sunoco, Sunoco
- 1:20:32The ground crew is out smoothing out the base pass
- 1:20:37We're going into the sixth inning, the Pirates will use a new hurler
- 1:20:44Looks like Bob Veale is going to make the leisurely walk into the ballgame
- 1:20:49We're going to pause for identification here in just a moment
- 1:20:53Want to check and make sure that it is Veale, both he and Braille's were warming up
- 1:20:58Down in the bullpen
- 1:21:05And it's Mr. Beale
- 1:21:07We'll tell you about his pitching statistics when we come back
- 1:21:11This is the Cardinals baseball network
- 1:21:20Can you see that?
- 1:21:23Stand by
- 1:21:29Jim Woods, if I were to tell you that Veale is 6-0 for the year, 6 wins, no losses
- 1:21:35And you were to tell me his earned run average was 7.26
- 1:21:41You'd say that's not right, you're wrong
- 1:21:44It's a misprint on this thing
- 1:21:46He's got the only innings pitch that he's had for 6 wins
- 1:21:50He's pitched a total of 31 innings
- 1:21:53And in that time he's given up 25 earned runs
- 1:21:57He hasn't had, well he's had two saves too
- 1:22:03He was talking the other day about this, he said I know I haven't pitched well
- 1:22:07But he said you've got to go with the record book, I'm 6-0
- 1:22:15Well to score 8-0, Beale takes over here in the 6th
- 1:22:19And Jose Cruz will be the first man up against him
- 1:22:23Cruz is 1-3, delivered a key hit in the first when the Cardinals scored 5 times
- 1:22:28They came back to get 3 more in the 5th
- 1:22:31Cruz had been retired in the 5th inning and Moose had set down 8 in a row
- 1:22:38Then things started to happen
- 1:22:41The Cardinals scored 3 runs off of Moose after getting 5 off of Johnson
- 1:22:48The pitch is on the way and Cruz takes a strike from big Bob Beale
- 1:22:54And I mean this fella's big
- 1:22:576-6, 2-15, pitches, low for a ball
- 1:23:04If Beale were a rent collector, you'd pay in advance
- 1:23:10Big fella brings it home and a swing and a miss by Cruz makes it 1 ball 2 strikes
- 1:23:16Jose will be followed by Torrey who will be up there looking for his 4th hit of the night
- 1:23:26Beale pitches in the dirt, bounces back to the screen, makes the count 2-2
- 1:23:33I've done that in room with Beale all the time, there were teammates over here
- 1:23:37And Dylans told me there's just no way of telling how strong Beale is
- 1:23:41He doesn't know himself, but he tears up phone books and things like that
- 1:23:45And he can throw the ball
- 1:23:47It's 2-2 delivery, swing and a foul out of play
- 1:23:52Beale confesses that he has difficulty regimenting himself with regard to his weight
- 1:23:59And he knows that he has hurt his career
- 1:24:02He said I just can't make myself do it during the off season
- 1:24:052-2 pitch and a bouncer to second and a big hop to Mazurowski
- 1:24:08He'll throw the first and Cruz is out
- 1:24:11Cruz does get down that line
- 1:24:14He's out and he's 1 for 4, here's Torrey trying to make it 4 for 4
- 1:24:25Jim Woods and Torrey have a little something going with regard to a superstition
- 1:24:31When we ride the bus to the ballpark, Torrey wants Jim to sit with him
- 1:24:39Because he's had good success in the ballgame whenever that's occurred and happened tonight
- 1:24:46The pitch to Joe, a ball outside, ball one
- 1:24:53Torrey is 3 for 3, they're all singles, he has scored twice, he's driven in a run
- 1:24:58And he swings and hits it slowly foul down the third base line to even the count 1-1
- 1:25:04Alright Jim, you were seated elsewhere and he said get back here and sit with me
- 1:25:08Started that night in the doubleheader in Montreal and he had the 7 hits
- 1:25:11So when he gets on the bus now he looks around and sees where I am and makes me move
- 1:25:15Swing and a foul, one ball, two strikes
- 1:25:20Not that he's not a pleasant fellow to sit with anyway
- 1:25:24One ball, two strikes to Torrey, one man out, 6th inning, 8-0 Cardinals
- 1:25:29A pitch from Veal and it's a strike call
- 1:25:35And Torrey says nothing but I don't believe he thought much of the call
- 1:25:40He's out on strikes
- 1:25:48That's Veal's first strike out, he's retired the first two and Torrey is 3 for 4
- 1:25:53Here's Simmons who turns around to bat right handed, Ted is 2 for 3 tonight with 2 runs scored
- 1:25:59And a run batted in
- 1:26:03Swing and a miss and Veal can pump that ball
- 1:26:07He kept that one away from Simmons
- 1:26:14Cash at third, deep behind the bag, the pitch is made and a fly ball into right center field
- 1:26:19And that is another hit for Simmons, his third hit of the night
- 1:26:23Ted is on with 2 men out, Simmons is 3 for 4
- 1:26:30Started the night at 3-0-6, he's up around 3-10 now
- 1:26:38As we mentioned before, Lou Brock might be back in the Cardinal lineup tomorrow
- 1:26:43A right hander, Keeson will be pitching against the Redbirds, here's Haig hitting against Veal
- 1:26:49Joe with a 3 run homer in the first, then he struck out and was given a walk
- 1:26:55A strike swinging, breaking ball fooled him
- 1:27:03The Pirates will have the top of their order up in the 6th inning
- 1:27:07Haig missed again, swinging hard, strike 2
- 1:27:17On to the count, in the 0-2 pitch, misses outside
- 1:27:23Veal is the third pitcher, Bob Johnson started it for the Pirates, gave up 5 runs in one third of an inning
- 1:27:31And Bob Moose, allowed 3 runs
- 1:27:35Pitch to Haig, low, we mentioned earlier this could prove to be a profitable night for the Pirates
- 1:27:43Even if they lose, if they brought Bob Moose through, but he wasn't too impressive
- 1:27:512-2 delivery, and Haig takes it way high, ball 3
- 1:27:55This Veal can hit a wild streak, the likes of which you've never seen
- 1:28:05A full count of 3-2 on Haig, and the runners, Simmons at first, will go with 2 men out
- 1:28:11As the Cardinals try to add to their 8-0 lead
- 1:28:15Veal is ready, Simmons is running, and there's a ball drilled foul into the right field corner
- 1:28:22The paid attendance tonight, 30,678
- 1:28:28They had 31,000 last night, and they're going to be sold out tomorrow
- 1:28:33They hold about 47 or so here, I believe
- 1:28:37Ball 4, Haig walks
- 1:28:46For the 3 dates the Cardinals have played here, the Pirates have drawn 83,000
- 1:28:51Now Kubiak turns around and bats right-handed, and comes up with 2-on-2-out
- 1:28:58Ted delivered a 2-run double in the 5th, also had a hit in the 1st, he's 2-for-3
- 1:29:062-on-2-out
- 1:29:09Veal in his first inning of work, brings it home, breaking ball in there, and a called strike
- 1:29:18I don't imagine Kubiak has ever faced Veal before
- 1:29:24That's what they had in the press room tonight
- 1:29:28Veal, not Kubiak, a strike call at the knees, strike 2
- 1:29:35On to the count
- 1:29:402-on-2-out on the Cardinals' 6th inning
- 1:29:44The pitch, high outside, way outside
- 1:29:481-2
- 1:29:51Football, a first-quarter score, Baltimore 7, Chicago Bears 3
- 1:30:00Here's the pitch to Kubiak, swings and fouls it back
- 1:30:061-2
- 1:30:09Cardinals scored 5 in the first, 3 in the 5th, have 2 men out in the 6th
- 1:30:20Veal slows it down, takes the handkerchief out of his pocket to mop his brow
- 1:30:30And then gets back on
- 1:30:34Simmons at second, Hague at first
- 1:30:40The 1-2 delivery coming, swinging a foul on a fastball, trying to go to right
- 1:30:50Ball back up on the screen and then down to the field
- 1:30:55Kubiak hanging in there, looking for his third hit
- 1:31:02Strike call, a fastball, forward in at the knees and Veal gets his second strike out of the inning
- 1:31:08The Cardinals lead 2 and they have stranded 8 while scoring 8
- 1:31:12No runs, one hit, no errors, a walk, two left
- 1:31:16In the Pirate's 6th inning, the top of the order will come up, the Cardinals lead 8 to nothing
- 1:31:21Do do do do do do
- 1:31:25Sit down, rest your mind, you've got lots of time, call a friend, talk about the day you had
- 1:31:31Pull up a chair, keep your shoes off there, get your troubles caused, friend, it ain't that bad
- 1:31:38With a life to lead, friend, there ain't no need to haggle, overnight time, entertainment
- 1:31:45You can sit at home when you're all alone and still have fun with the right arrangement
- 1:31:52That's the way Bush does it, with the right arrangement
- 1:31:566-row barley and virgin hops, the best money can buy
- 1:32:01Lots of time to let the inbrewed carbonation happen naturally
- 1:32:06Rest your mind with a cold Bush, Bush does it like no other beer
- 1:32:12Visit our St. Louis Brewery and we will prove it
- 1:32:15Bush does it like no other beer
- 1:32:23In another baseball game, the Cubs hang on to their lead over Cincinnati 3-1 at the end of 7
- 1:32:31And in football, the Cardinals and Houston scoreless after one period
- 1:32:37Dave Cash leads off against Gibson and has held the Pirates Hitlers through the first five innings
- 1:32:44Ball one high from Bob who has struck out seven
- 1:32:49Walked two, Cardinals lead 8-0
- 1:32:53Next delivery, swing and a foul out of play, 1-1 will be Cash, Dabaliol and Oliver
- 1:32:59A lot of left-handed batters for Gibson to work on tonight
- 1:33:03Crowd whoops it up and Cash swings and a fly ball to right
- 1:33:10Hague is there, he's got it
- 1:33:12Hard hit ball but Hague had him played well, drifted back and made the catch
- 1:33:18Reaching above his head for the out
- 1:33:23Dabaliol is 0-2
- 1:33:26I know sometimes when we talk about a pitcher having a no hitter, people say we put the hex on
- 1:33:31Well, maybe in Salem, Massachusetts but not in 1971
- 1:33:41Dabaliol is 0-2
- 1:33:46He'll glide to center and bounce to short
- 1:33:48His first pitch is made and it is a ball high
- 1:33:52And if something like that were to happen, we'd want you to share all of the excitement and be aware of the fact that
- 1:33:57Such a game was in progress
- 1:33:59The next pitch and a fly ball to the shortstop, he got him on a change up
- 1:34:06A little pop fly to Maxwell, you couldn't really call it a line drive, it was hit so softly and that's the second out of the inning
- 1:34:13Now Oliver is up
- 1:34:15He's flied to left, popped to short, he usually hits the ball the opposite field, he's a left-handed batter
- 1:34:20Gibson's first one to him and it's a ball outside
- 1:34:24Cardinals trying to move within five of Pittsburgh, lead eight to nothing
- 1:34:30Swing and a bouncer to first, Gibson comes over to cover, Alou makes the out himself
- 1:34:35And at the end of six, Gibson still has not allowed a hit
- 1:34:40No runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left
- 1:34:45You can start getting a little bit excited about this situation now
- 1:34:48Gibson has never had a hit before
- 1:34:51At the end of six, the Cardinals lead eight to nothing
- 1:34:55Nice home court, Bush does it like no other beer
- 1:35:00Hiya Barney
- 1:35:01Hi Jack, mind if I sit down, I'm getting to the age it takes me longer to rest than it does to get tired
- 1:35:06Oh you're not old Barney
- 1:35:08Well now that I know my way around I don't feel like going
- 1:35:11Exciting night is just to turn up the electric blanket a bit
- 1:35:14Yeah I'm still better than a ball player we had down home
- 1:35:17So slow he couldn't beat out a walk Now that is slow
- 1:35:21Took him an hour to make minute rice and lazy, nobody ever knew how tall he was
- 1:35:25Never saw him completely standing up
- 1:35:27I guess there are worse things than aging
- 1:35:29Oh aging can be a good thing Jack, like with this Bush here
- 1:35:33It's the extra time we take to smooth it out
- 1:35:35Alive like it is Barney
- 1:35:37That's just one of the things that makes Bush the best beer in the ballpark
- 1:35:40I better get moving
- 1:35:41Got fans waiting in our range
- 1:35:43So soon you just got here
- 1:35:44Yeah but a man stretches his legs according to the length of his blanket
- 1:35:48See ya Jack
- 1:35:49Ice cold Bush, Bush doesn't like no other beer
- 1:35:53Barney the Bush man, say hi next time you see him
- 1:35:58We're into the summer venting here, Maxville is the lead off
- 1:36:01Batter and Veal slams a fastball passing for a strike
- 1:36:04Max he is 0 for 2 on the night
- 1:36:09Big left tender
- 1:36:11Lays another one in and it's a foul ball out of play
- 1:36:15Two quick strikes
- 1:36:18Two weeks from tonight we'll be home with the Reds
- 1:36:20And that's going to be Jerseyville Illinois night
- 1:36:22Hope you'll be there, Menard County Illinois day on Sunday
- 1:36:25And Vandalia Illinois Monday August 30th when the Mets come in
- 1:36:31Pitch down low 1 and 2
- 1:36:33You folks from Vandalia can secure your ticket information from Mr. Lamar Wiss
- 1:36:38At 283-2282 the phone number
- 1:36:42Ball 2 is outside
- 1:36:442 and 2
- 1:36:48None on none out and the Cardinals comfortably in front
- 1:36:518 to nothing in the 7
- 1:36:53Here's the pitch, it's wide, ball 3
- 1:36:58Veal has been plagued with a lot of wildness during his career
- 1:37:02Never was the great winner that they expected him to be off his minor league record
- 1:37:06Another foul out of play
- 1:37:08Full count 3 and 2
- 1:37:17Outfield straight away for Maxville and Veal readies now for the payoff pitch
- 1:37:22Drilling shot out towards center, here comes Oliver on the move, he got there
- 1:37:29Maxville's good for a base hit
- 1:37:31Taken away from him by Al Oliver and Bob Gibson will bat
- 1:37:34Nothing for 2, he's driven in one of the 8 runs with a fly ball
- 1:37:39The Pittsburgh fans are giving him a big hand as he comes up
- 1:37:52He bats against Veal for the first time tonight
- 1:37:55Fast ball right down the middle, 0-1
- 1:37:58Robert Veal from Birmingham, Alabama
- 1:38:01The overpowered Gibson with a fast ball as he swung and missed 2 strikes
- 1:38:09And the next delivery, he just did get a piece of it and nicked it back onto the screen
- 1:38:13And it runs back down, still no balls, 2 strikes
- 1:38:211 out here in the 7
- 1:38:23Veal into the motion, here's the pitch to Gibby and it's a ball
- 1:38:27Didn't miss by much, 1 and 2
- 1:38:36Left hander delivers again and again he's wide
- 1:38:392 balls, 2 strikes
- 1:38:42Johnson on the hook for the ball game, he gave up the first 5 runs after retiring
- 1:38:46Only 1 run left, he's in the 7th
- 1:38:48Johnson on the hook for the ball game, he gave up the first 5 runs after retiring
- 1:38:53Only 1 man in the first inning before Murtaugh removed him
- 1:38:562-2 pitch, fly ball toward right
- 1:38:59Davalillo drifting 2 or 3 steps to his left, grabs it off, 2 outs
- 1:39:062 and out of Manny Allou
- 1:39:08Allou is hitless on the night, although he's walked twice
- 1:39:11And he's going to be taking his time about getting up there with Gibson having run down the first baseline on the high fly ball
- 1:39:21It was obviously going to be caught, Gibby didn't run all out
- 1:39:29Final game of this series tomorrow and then on to the Rhineland, the Riverfront Stadium
- 1:39:35For 3 with the Reds, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights
- 1:39:40Working veal to Allou, bouncing ball up the middle, Mazurowski goes over, short hops and does not come up with it
- 1:39:52It's an error, charge to Bill Mazurowski
- 1:39:57And Allou gets a line, that's the second pirate error of the night
- 1:40:05And Sizemore has a chance, 1 for 4
- 1:40:08Maz got to the ball and couldn't handle the tricky in between hops, he played every hop well except the last one
- 1:40:19Fastball over for a strike, going 1
- 1:40:26Houston and Atlanta are scoreless at the end of 3 in their night game down at Lannaway
- 1:40:31Veal's next pitch, fastball low, relying almost entirely on his fastball, which is still pretty zingy
- 1:40:39Although it does not quite have the velocity as a young Bob Veal did several years ago
- 1:40:45One ball, one strike, a pitch on the corner, 1 and 2
- 1:40:53Cardinals got them in bunches tonight, 5 in the first and 3 in the fifth
- 1:40:57They've had 11 hits overall, Sizemore taps one down to Bob Robertson
- 1:41:03He's up on all over to Veal, safe!
- 1:41:06A good hustling slide by Sizemore, just absolutely out-hustled Veal to the bank, is the only way you can call it
- 1:41:12He went in there sliding, and that slide got him in ahead of Veal, and it'll be a base hit for Sizemore
- 1:41:19And that is hustle all the way, my friends
- 1:41:22On the play, Alou moved into second, and now Cruz will bat with 2 on and 2 out
- 1:41:32Veal was extremely slow coming to cover
- 1:41:38Cruz on the night, singled his first time up, has gone out the next 3 times, 1 for 4
- 1:41:44They're in the ninth inning at Cincinnati, Cubs 3, Reds 1
- 1:41:52The Cubs are hanging right on the coattails of the Cardinals
- 1:41:58Looking at the score and saying they've got a pretty good chance to pick up a full game on the Pirates 2
- 1:42:03Curve ball over, strike call
- 1:42:06Alou leads off second, Sizemore off first
- 1:42:09Real wicked fastball outside, 1 and 1 the count
- 1:42:19This has been the only wide open game of this series, the other two were real tight-knit pitching battles
- 1:42:26High to Cruz, and he's got a good shot
- 1:42:29And Gibson has just been magnificent so far, he has a no-hitter going to the seventh inning
- 1:42:40He gets through the seventh, the tension will be building up around here
- 1:42:43And I'll tell you one reason why, or a lot of reasons, of course
- 1:42:47People get excited about any no-hitter, and they get excited about the fact that they're going to be able to get a good shot
- 1:42:56Of course, people get excited about any no-hitter, whether it's pitched against them or for them
- 1:43:03Little pop foul, down, out of play
- 1:43:07There has never been a no-hit game pitched in the city of Pittsburgh
- 1:43:13In the old ballpark, Forbes Field, which was built in 1909, there was never a no-hitter thrown there
- 1:43:18There's never been one thrown here
- 1:43:21As close as anybody came was this year when Luke Walker took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Dodgers
- 1:43:27And the first man up, Joe Ferguson, hit a home run to ruin it for him
- 1:43:34Two balls, two strikes
- 1:43:36Vio Works strike three called, and Cruz is out of there
- 1:43:40No runs, one hit, one error, two left, and the Cardinals have stranded ten
- 1:43:46But nonetheless, going to the bottom of the seventh, they lead
- 1:44:16Whether you're working, relaxing, or just making friendly conversation, Red Fox Chewing Tobacco makes things go a little smoother
- 1:44:39So keep some handy, it's got flavor with life in it
- 1:44:50So here we go, and looky who's up
- 1:44:53Willie Starjil, struck out and walked
- 1:44:55Gibson has walked a pair in the ballgame
- 1:44:58Big swing by Starjil and a foul ball out of play
- 1:45:01No balls and a strike
- 1:45:04And this big crowd now is starting to roar
- 1:45:1030,000 plus in here
- 1:45:12Gibson brings it in to Willie, it's high
- 1:45:14A blazing fastball from Gibson, one and one they count
- 1:45:22Outfield, deep for Starjil, around toward right
- 1:45:24Check swing, a drive down the left field line, it's foul
- 1:45:29One and two
- 1:45:36Milton A. is next and then Bob Robertson
- 1:45:39Here's the pitch to Starjil, just off the corner, two and two they count
- 1:45:49Gibson ready quickly, brings in the delivery, strike, three, swinging, Starjil goes down on strikes
- 1:45:55That's now eight for Gibson, and there's one away in the seventh
- 1:46:00Milton A. bats now, he's nothing for two
- 1:46:04One of the three base runners that the Pirates have had all night
- 1:46:09He struck out in the second inning and the pitch got away from Simmons
- 1:46:12That was eventually ruled a wild pitch
- 1:46:14And the two walks, the only men that the Pirates have have aboard
- 1:46:19Gibson pops a fastball, just a little high, one ball no strikes
- 1:46:24Works again to the left hand, inning catcher, there's a drilling shot
- 1:46:31Deep left center field, Cruz on the move, way back, way back, and he got there
- 1:46:36Cruz up the wall, saved it
- 1:46:38Jose Cruz had to run a country mile, believe me my friends, and he got there
- 1:46:43Ran out from under his cap and staggered at the base of the wall
- 1:46:46And dragged it down, there are two men out
- 1:46:50And here is Bob Robertson, up twice, struck out twice
- 1:46:56Gibson has eight K's hung up in the book tonight
- 1:47:04And he's had everything going for him
- 1:47:08Robertson checks off the first pitch, he did everything but swing at it, one ball no strikes
- 1:47:15Robbie out of the batter's box right now, I don't know what's the matter with him
- 1:47:26Gibson doesn't wait very long for him, brings it in, strike call
- 1:47:31You can just see the smoke pouring off some of Gibson's deliveries
- 1:47:36Two men out, seven theny, nobody on, one one count
- 1:47:39On the buck, first baseman, the delivery ripped down, he got a cut
- 1:47:42Foul back into the screen, strike two, one ball, two strikes
- 1:47:53Gibson again has to wait as Robertson tries to break his concentration and rhythm
- 1:47:57Here's the delivery, a ball, breaking ball wide, two balls, two strikes
- 1:48:05Mazeroski on deck
- 1:48:08Here's Gibson, into the two-two movement, and a swing and a miss, no foul ball
- 1:48:13The crowd roared but the ball just did roll out of the glove of Ted Simmons and was just barely tipped
- 1:48:18Still two and two
- 1:48:25Get a little apprehensive when you get that close to getting it out, here's the pitch outside
- 1:48:30Full count now, three and two
- 1:48:34And again Robertson backs away
- 1:48:39He squeezes that bat, you can almost see the sawdust come running out of it
- 1:48:43Three balls, two strikes, and the pitch, bouncing ball just foul past Torrey
- 1:48:49Oh man, that was less than a foot, Torrey lunged for it, couldn't get a glove on it
- 1:48:54And it was just outside the line, Gibson has had two close calls in this inning
- 1:49:00The long drive hit by May and that one hit right there by Robertson
- 1:49:04Three balls, two strikes, big right hander into the motion, here's the delivery, foul back and out of play
- 1:49:16Oh Robertson is giving him a battle and staying alive here and Gibson is trying to put him away
- 1:49:23Into the dugout, three-two pitch comes in again, let up delivery, he lost him, ball four
- 1:49:29Third walk given up by Gibby, and now the batter will be Bill Mazurowski
- 1:49:34Who has popped up, grounded out, and will pause for station identification on the Cardinals baseball network
- 1:49:41Man has a drilling line drive and Maxey's got it, Maxville right at his knees
- 1:49:59Took a scorching line drive off the bat of Bill Mazurowski and Gibson is safely through the seven
- 1:50:05No runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left, at the end of seven innings the Cardinals eight runs on twelve hits
- 1:50:12The Pirates no runs and no hits
- 1:50:42In beer, there's only one way to make it, and that's the way Butch does it, with the best ingredients and brewing skills
- 1:51:04Visit our brewery and see why
- 1:51:18Ville fires the first pitch into touring, it's down low, one ball no strikes, Joe has three hits on the night
- 1:51:23Three for four and it's wide, two and 0 the count, struck out his last time up or rather was called out on strikes
- 1:51:30Ville didn't think it was, but Wendelstadt did, two nothing pitch from the king size left hander and a rip by Torrey and a foul
- 1:51:37Two and one, Seidman has kind of died down here with the Cardinals batting, but it will build up and Gibson takes that no hitter to the mound in the eighth inning
- 1:51:45There's a ball high to Torrey, up around the peak of the cap, here's Ville ready to move the delivery in again and a high pop up
- 1:52:01Coming back, let's see, Milt May got it right at the screen, and he had a chance
- 1:52:09Well Torrey has a three for five night as he fouls out to Milt May, Ted Simmons bats now and he's had a double and two singles in four trips to the plate
- 1:52:26One out here in the top of the eighth inning, Cardinals have out hit the Pirates 12 to nothing
- 1:52:32Here's a line drive by Simmons and I do believe he's got another hit, he has, Simmons hangs out his fourth hit of the night, he's four for five
- 1:52:42This could be a night that Mr. Simmons will long remember, one on one out and Joe Hague, one hit and two official trips to the plate
- 1:52:51It left the ballpark to cap off the five run first inning when the Cardinals clobbered Bob Johnson and drove him to an early shower
- 1:53:00A ball outside, one and 0 the count, at Chicago, Cuellar for Baltimore, Bradley for the White Sox
- 1:53:10Cuellar had been going very good, bouncing ball up the middle, center field, Simmons down to second and he's going to stop right there
- 1:53:17As Joe Hague gets his second hit of the night and the Cardinals 14th base ball off pirate pitching
- 1:53:27Kubiak the batter now, he had a big hit back in the fifth inning, a double down into the right field corner that drove in a couple and overall he's two for four
- 1:53:40Cardinals came to play when they arrived in Pittsburgh early Thursday morning, fastball low from Veele, one ball no strikes
- 1:53:51Simmons at second, Hague at first, only one man out and the Redbirds in front, eight nothing, eight inning
- 1:53:58Big cut by Kubiak and he tried to go down that right field corner again, I'll tell you, one and one they count
- 1:54:10Veele brings in his next pitch, it's nowhere near the plate, two balls and a strike
- 1:54:17Johnson, Moose and Veele have been the three hurlers tonight for Danny Martell
- 1:54:27Veele again has his handkerchief out, he has a lot of trouble with his eyeglasses that fog up on him and I can understand why, as smoggy as it is around here tonight
- 1:54:38Here's the 2-1 pitch, foul back out of play, 2-2
- 1:54:51Two balls, two strikes, two on, the Cardinals trying to get some more
- 1:55:00Trying to get even with their frustrations against the Pirates last year and in the early part of this season
- 1:55:07Wide ball three, full count three and two
- 1:55:14Kubiak takes a look at Benson, another three-two count, not much Vern can help him with, we'll see if Red starts the runners here
- 1:55:23He doesn't and the three-two pitch is high, he walked him and the Cardinals have the bases fall
- 1:55:29And Maxey will bat, he's hitless on the night, he's 0-3, hit the ball hard last time up but Oliver made a fine running catch to deprive him of a base hit
- 1:55:41Simmons on at third, Haig the runner at second and now Kubiak is at first with one out
- 1:55:47And the Bucks keep their infield at double play depth
- 1:55:54They are down by eight at this late stage of the ball game
- 1:55:59Up high to Maxville, one ball no strikes, Veale who has a tendency to go wild, may be headed that direction
- 1:56:12Big guy brings it down again, ball two is up high, two balls no strikes
- 1:56:19And it is Veale forever, there's nobody warming up in the Pirate Bowl panel
- 1:56:25You know you really don't like to see Gibson on the bench this long Jim
- 1:56:30That's right, not with the rhythm that he's got going for him, there's ball three outside, three and all the count
- 1:56:36And Veale is on the verge of walking in another Cardinal run
- 1:56:42And this crowd is hooting and hollering even though they got a first place ball club here, they're really letting them have it in this slump
- 1:56:483-0 pitch, strike call, 3-1
- 1:56:55Three runners lead away for the Cardinals, Veale gets ready in a hurry, fires it high, ball four and a run is forced in
- 1:57:01That makes it nine to nothing
- 1:57:05Maxville will receive credit for a run batted in and Veale's ERA may be creeping up a little higher
- 1:57:14The base is still loaded to Bob Gibson, listen to the hands for him
- 1:57:19Bob nothing for three, he drove in a run with a fly ball as the opportunity is the same here
- 1:57:32And Veale is nowhere near the plate, he's gone wild, wild, one ball no strikes
- 1:57:43Cardinal runners at every base, Robertson up a little bit at first, a strike poured right down the middle, one and one
- 1:57:53Now Brials does come up in the parent bullpen
- 1:57:591-1 pitch from Big Bob, a throw down to first and back in plenty of time as Maxville pitch with the ball, two and one they count
- 1:58:08Veale is only one batter away from the top of the batting order, Mattie Allou
- 1:58:16Nine nothing, St. Louis, Veale wiping his glasses once more
- 1:58:29He's a white handkerchief now, he used to always carry a big red bandana out there
- 1:58:34With a trademark of his for a number of years, two balls one strike
- 1:58:43Working to Gibson, swing by Bob and a miss two to the count, came right over the top with a fastball
- 1:59:00Delivery is a shot to left field, the base hit, Hague is in the score
- 1:59:04Here comes Kubiak and Stargell's throw is not in time, he scores, it's 11-0
- 1:59:12Bob Gibson drives in his second and third runs of the night, he's got eight overall
- 1:59:18And the Cardinals now have an 11-0 lead, Maxville stopped at second, still only one man out and Allou will be the batter
- 1:59:26I guess I would see Gibson not run the bases in this spot, Jim, but that's a little additional effort he's going to have to put out this evening
- 1:59:36Bring a jacket down to him, yeah I'm like you, it's a long inning for Gibby not to be on that mound
- 1:59:42With the fasts he likes to pitch and his rhythm, but we'll just have to see how it works out
- 1:59:48Cardinals 11 runs, 15 hits, Pirates no runs, no hits, and they're taking a jacket down to Gibson
- 1:59:55Five runs in the first setting, three more in the fifth, three more in the eighth
- 2:00:02And the Cardinals are giving the Pirates a real old fashioned thrashing
- 2:00:09Pitch to Allou, wide and low, one ball no strikes
- 2:00:16Sizemore will be next, still only one man out in the inning
- 2:00:22Maddie a foul over the screen, one and one
- 2:00:30Tomorrow afternoon, Bruce Keeson and Reggie Cleveland in the windup of this big, big four game set
- 2:00:39And a packed house will be here, one-one delivery, swing by Allou, he got nothing, one and two
- 2:00:51Most of the big crowd sticking around, and you know why, with this thing that Gibson's got going
- 2:00:58There's a pitch foul back out of play, otherwise with an 11-0 score, I think many of them would have departed homeward
- 2:01:06They're going to stick around to see if this, perhaps, is the night that the city of Pittsburgh will see its first no-hitter in baseball history
- 2:01:21Swing and a miss, night three
- 2:01:30Chuck points out, in the olden days, they discount their baseball history here from Forbes Field
- 2:01:36There was one pitched here by somebody in 1907, but they never really counted that as modern-day baseball
- 2:01:43They did everything from Forbes Field, which was built in 1909
- 2:01:46Sizemore bats here with two outs and two on
- 2:01:51Fouls off the first pitch for a strike, 0-1 the count
- 2:01:5911-0, Redbirds, top of the eighth inning
- 2:02:09Neal trying to put Sizemore away, and he almost threw that pitch away, one ball, one strike
- 2:02:15At the end of four innings, Atlanta holds a 1-0 lead over Houston
- 2:02:19Giants lost today, or won today, 6-5, the Dodgers are playing tonight
- 2:02:25With the pressure on them
- 2:02:32Neal works and Sizemore bangs it right down to Cash, who steps on third for the force-out of Maxwell to retire the side
- 2:02:39Three more runs on three hits, no errors, two more left
- 2:02:45Cardinals have left 12-1, but going to the bottom of the eighth, they lead 11-0
- 2:02:50The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence
- 2:02:59That's what he told me, and I haven't seen the guy that I love since
- 2:03:07He told me he was through for greener pastures, he had found
- 2:03:12That he was tired of playing, old man was leaving his hip-hand
- 2:03:16I said, okay, be on your way, someday you'll know
- 2:03:23Without love, green grass won't grow
- 2:03:26Take a good look before you change anything, especially your beer
- 2:03:31Bush is brewed with all the time it takes to let the fine ingredients mellow
- 2:03:35And we wait even longer while our beer builds its own natural bubbles
- 2:03:39Worth the extra time? Well, beer drinkers all over will tell you
- 2:03:44Bush has been like no other beer
- 2:04:14And they're applauding Gibson on every out now
- 2:04:21The batter is going to be Klienz, he'll pinch hit for Bob Veale, Gene Klienz
- 2:04:27A right-hand hitter, batting at 3-0-3, a home run, 18-ban it in
- 2:04:38And he's taking his time about getting up there
- 2:04:42So this is the number 9 hitter coming up, Klienz to bat for Veale
- 2:04:49You know, that walk that Gibson issued in the 7th is going to ensure the fact that Stargill is going to come up again
- 2:04:54Yeah, sure is, you look back on it now, Jack
- 2:04:58Torrey stays in tight, Klienz has got great speed
- 2:05:03And has displayed it in this series so far
- 2:05:08Gibby ready to work, Klienz takes the ball, down low, one ball, no strikes
- 2:05:18Gibson has to wait for him, all these pirate hitters seem to be trying to break Gibson's rhythm and concentration
- 2:05:23Here's the delivery, a swing and a miss, strike one, one and one the count
- 2:05:32One out, nobody on, Gibson has issued three walks, here's the delivery, moved outside, ball two, two and one
- 2:05:42And the strike out and the wild pitch that allowed Milton A. to get on, that's been the only four pirate baserunners tonight
- 2:05:50Two balls and a strike, pitch coming, strike, two, call, right down the middle
- 2:05:56And the count goes to two and two
- 2:06:01And again, Gene Klienz steps out
- 2:06:06Gibson just waits for him, pumps immediately, delivers, high ball three, full count three and two
- 2:06:14Gibson looks around behind him, check the scoreboard, check his outfield, which is a little bit around toward right
- 2:06:21And a big three-two pitch coming up here to the pinch hitter Klienz, here's the delivery and it's a foul out of play
- 2:06:32I think Brooke Lawrence is feeling the pressure over there a little bit, Jack
- 2:06:35I tell you, his hands are just as sweaty as mine, dude
- 2:06:38Three balls, two strikes, Gibson works, got him, strike three, swinging
- 2:06:44Number nine goes into the books for Gibson and now he has two men out in the last half of the eighth inning
- 2:06:50And the top of the batting order, Dave Cash
- 2:06:53I fear this fellow as much as anybody in the pirate lineup, Jim
- 2:06:58Three times tonight, he has gone the right field
- 2:07:01The last time it was a line drive that Hague caught
- 2:07:07Gibson works to him, pops it through, strike call, low and one, the count
- 2:07:14Torrey has deepened about a step, he's still up on the astroturf, here's the delivery
- 2:07:18Ground ball, hit down to Torrey, leaps up high, gets it, throws and turns
- 2:07:22Gibson's got a no-hitter through eight
- 2:07:25At the end of eight, inning to play, 11 to nothing, St. Louis

- 2:08:31In the football game in St. Louis at the half, the Cardinals 7, Houston 7
- 2:08:37Here in the ninth inning, the Cardinals lead 11 to nothing
- 2:08:42And face Nelson Braus in the top of the ninth
- 2:08:52Braus is the fourth, Clarence Hurler
- 2:08:57But the heck with the top of the ninth
- 2:09:00Let's play the bottom of the ninth right now
- 2:09:03I wonder if you can wave your outs
- 2:09:08Braus into the game with a record of 5-2, an earned run average of 3.90
- 2:09:13Cardinals scored 5 off of Johnson, the starter
- 2:09:173 off of Moose, 3 against Veal
- 2:09:22And will send up Cruz to start the ninth inning
- 2:09:25The Cardinals have out hit Pittsburgh 15 to nothing
- 2:09:29And lead 11 to nothing
- 2:09:31And in the pirate ninth, folks, Davalio, Oliver, and Starjol
- 2:09:373 left-handed batters against Gibson who will have a no-hitter going into that ninth inning
- 2:10:01We get the information that Nicholas Medics pitched a no-hitter in 1907
- 2:10:08In the ballpark the pirates used before they were into Forbes Field
- 2:10:15Jose Cruz leads off in the Cardinal ninth inning
- 2:10:21And don't think, folks, that the plate umpire, who in this case is Harry Wendelstedt
- 2:10:26Is not anticipating the bottom of the ninth
- 2:10:29The pitch on the way to Cruz, a swing and a high pop foul
- 2:10:33Coming back near the screen, on the screen, strike one to Cruz
- 2:10:38Jose is 1 for 5 tonight
- 2:10:45He got a base hit in the first inning off the glove of the third baseman
- 2:10:49Which turned out to be a key hit in the first when the Cardinals scored 5
- 2:10:58Torrey will be up next
- 2:11:00Cruz takes a ball in the dirt
- 2:11:03Torrey is 3 for 5 in the ball game tonight
- 2:11:07No matter what he does in the last at bat, his average will increase
- 2:11:15Riles pitches, Cruz a fly ball to center field, Oliver drifts back to make the catch
- 2:11:20He's there and he has it for the out
- 2:11:24Cruz fly to center
- 2:11:28The batter is Joe Torrey
- 2:11:35Joe single his first three times and struck out and fouled up
- 2:11:45Outfield deep around to the left
- 2:11:50Nelson Briles in his first inning of work pitches and Torrey takes a ball outside
- 2:11:54He goes back to the screen
- 2:11:56Reggie Cleveland against Bruce Keeson tomorrow
- 2:12:04Outfield deep to the left is Torrey waits, Briles brings it home
- 2:12:07And there's a ground ball to the left of the third baseman, another hit for Torrey
- 2:12:12Torrey is 4 for 6 on the night
- 2:12:17Torrey gets a single with one out here
- 2:12:23And the batter is Simmons who already has 4 hits in the ball game
- 2:12:28Torrey now has 169 hits for the year
- 2:12:41Simmons at the plate
- 2:12:45Benning left handed against Briles, swings and hits it back to the pitcher
- 2:12:49Great play, throws to second out, throws to first out
- 2:12:52A tremendous play by Briles who grabbed that ball just off his left ear
- 2:12:58Throw to the shortstop, on to first base
- 2:13:02A 1-6-3 double play, no runs, one hit, no errors and nobody left
- 2:13:11And here we go folks, into the bottom of the ninth
- 2:13:17With Bob Gibson owning a no-hitter
- 2:13:21It will be D'Avalio, Oliver and Stardale
- 2:13:26And the Cardinals lead 11-0
- 2:13:31Gibson has struck out 9
- 2:13:35He has walked 3
- 2:13:37One other batter reached as a result of a dropped third strike
- 2:13:414 base runners therefore allowed and 4 men left on base
- 2:13:58Gibson taking his warm-up tosses
- 2:14:01D'Avalio's flying to center, bounce to short and pop to short
- 2:14:04Gibson got him on an off-speed breaking ball the last time
- 2:14:11Last Cardinal no-hitter was by Ray Washburn against San Francisco a couple of years ago
- 2:14:20Oh here's a dangerous hitter in this spot
- 2:14:24Nick D'Avalio, left handed batter
- 2:14:27For whom they play straight away
- 2:14:31Torrey has to play in because D'Avalio likes to bunt
- 2:14:38Kubiak is deep at second
- 2:14:40Gibson on the mound
- 2:14:43The wind-up, his first pitch and a swing and a pop foul out of play
- 2:14:47Strike one
- 2:14:51Well Torrey has picked up 4 points tonight, he's batting 359
- 2:14:59Next pitch to D'Avalio coming
- 2:15:02Strike called on the outside corner
- 2:15:06Gibson really powdered one and he's got some fire left
- 2:15:110-2 to D'Avalio
- 2:15:14Leading off in the ninth
- 2:15:16Gibson pitches, a ground ball to short, Maxwell has it
- 2:15:20The throw to first he's out and Gibson needs 2 more
- 2:15:27Gibson needs 2 more, Oliver and Stargell
- 2:15:31D'Avalio is out 6-3 to start it
- 2:15:34Gibson in the last couple of innings has been helped
- 2:15:38When a couple of line drives were caught and some good fielding plays were made behind him
- 2:15:45Al Oliver is 0-3, left handed hitter, first pitch, inside ball one
- 2:15:52Oliver flied to left, popped to short, grounded out to first
- 2:15:56They play him to hit a little bit to left
- 2:15:59Torrey is even with the bag at third and here's the pitch and a swing and a miss
- 2:16:03And a letter high fastball and Gibson has this pirate crowd rooting for the no hitter
- 2:16:08What will the score, 11 to nothing?
- 2:16:11There's one out in the bottom of the ninth
- 2:16:141-1 the count and the pitch from Gibson is on the way and a swing and a ground ball to second
- 2:16:19He's got it, Kubiak throws him out
- 2:16:22One more to go
- 2:16:25Oliver was jammed with a pitch on the fist and he grounded to Kubiak for the second out
- 2:16:31And here is the biggest power hitter in the National League at the plate, Willie Stargell
- 2:16:37With two men out and the crowd is roaring
- 2:16:41Gibson into the windup, the pitch, a swing and a miss, strike one
- 2:16:46Gibson is two strikes away from a no hitter
- 2:16:49It'll be the first of a tremendously illustrious career
- 2:16:53One strike on Stargell
- 2:16:56The windup, the pitch, inside for a ball to even the count at one and one
- 2:17:02As Gibson, jammed him with a breaking ball, two men out, nobody on, bottom of the ninth
- 2:17:0711 to nothing Cardinals
- 2:17:091-1 on Stargell, the pitch on the way and a swing and a miss, strike two
- 2:17:14A good ball breaking ball
- 2:17:16And Gibson is one strike away from the no hitter
- 2:17:20He takes off his cap, he mops his brow, he looks in and gets the side
- 2:17:26He starts to windup, here's the pitch and it's a strike called
- 2:17:31A no hitter for Gibson
- 2:17:33Simmons roars to the mound
- 2:17:36His race is Gibson losing, Gulp Feist is late
- 2:17:39And the Cardinals win the game 11 to nothing
- 2:17:4325 player pound Bob Gibson
- 2:17:46For a tremendous effort here tonight
- 2:17:50A called third strike
- 2:17:53To Willie Stargell ended it
- 2:17:56And Gibson, who has done everything else in the book
- 2:18:00Except a no hitter
- 2:18:02Got it here tonight
- 2:18:0411 to nothing, the Cardinals win it
- 2:18:07He set them down in order
- 2:18:09He got D'Avalio, he got Oliver
- 2:18:12And he struck out Stargell and a little foot shot coming out there pounding Gibson on the back
- 2:18:17Woods had to jump over the air to get to him
- 2:18:19And jump up he did and Gibson grabbed him
- 2:18:21Everybody just all over him and a tremendous thrill for everybody
- 2:18:24In the history of modern Pittsburgh baseball
- 2:18:27The first no hitter thrown in this town and Jackson earlier
- 2:18:30Won in 1907 and Bob Gibson did it in just magnificent fashion tonight
- 2:18:35If you were here, it would have made you cry
- 2:18:39The Cardinals win 11 to nothing, we'll have the totals and highlights in a minute
- 2:18:43Goodbye woman, goodbye girl
- 2:18:49You've hurt me one too many times
- 2:18:54You gave me nothing but a hard way to go

- 2:19:03Goodbye trouble, goodbye pain
- 2:19:08I don't want no more of what you give
- 2:19:13I'll find myself a bunch of good, good times
- 2:19:17I'll find a brand new way to live
- 2:19:21Goodbye is not the end
- 2:19:23It's the chance to move on up and find something better
- 2:19:26A better life, a beer like Bush

- 2:19:39Visit our St. Louis brewery and we will prove it
- 2:19:43Before we go into any wrap up here, we're going to pause for station identification on the St. Louis Cardinals baseball network
- 2:20:07I think that Jack and this announcer have used up about every adjudy we can think of tonight
- 2:20:13describing what was just a superb, unbeatable pitching performance by Bob Gibson
- 2:20:19and a heartwarming thing for this guy who all throughout his tremendous career, and that's what it has been, has never thrown one
- 2:20:27He came close last year in San Diego, Ivan Morrell broke that one up in the eighth inning
- 2:20:32but tonight he was not to be denied and he had 30,678 bug-eyed Pittsburghers rooting for him on every pitch
- 2:20:41From the eighth inning on, every out recorded by the Cardinals was greeted with a wild roar from the crowd here
- 2:20:47because they've always been pretty fair-minded here
- 2:20:50Jack has already headed downstairs, there's going to be something to get Gibson out of what has got to be a mad scene down in our dressing room
- 2:20:58Not only the no-hitter, but three straight now from the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cardinals closed over five lengths of the Eastern Division leaders
- 2:21:07The Redbirds picked up five runs in the first inning here tonight, highlighted on Joe Haig's 11th home run of the year
- 2:21:14Then they tacked on, three more in the fifth on three base hits and three more in the eighth inning
- 2:21:20Haig drove in three runs, Gibson himself, the top-off his performance, drove in three runs
- 2:21:25Torrey had a great night, he had four for six, Ted Simmons had four hits
- 2:21:30and overall it was a Cardinal victory that just completely crushed the Pirates tonight
- 2:21:36The only man to reach base off Gibson in the second inning, he struck out in May on a very bad ball that got away from Simmons
- 2:21:43that was ruled a wild pitch, he walked Hernandez in the third, he walked Stargell in the fourth
- 2:21:50and in the seventh inning he walked Bob Robertson and those were the only men that the Pirates got on base all night long
- 2:21:59Cardinals 11 runs, 16 hits no errors, Pittsburgh no runs, no hits and two errors
- 2:22:06The winner is Gibson, 11 and 10 and his first no-hitter ever, the loser is Bob Johnson and he is seven and eight
- 2:22:14We're going to get this down, Jack, where's the disclaimer Al?
- 2:22:21So we're going to wrap things up here and see if we can get Mr. Gibson on
- 2:22:26Some of the crowd still sticking around here and just looking out at the field where this momentous thing occurred
- 2:22:35Our producer tonight has been Al Chance, our engineer Bob Tolar, John Tolar rather

- 2:24:20This is the Cardinals Baseball Network
- 2:24:26The 201st win of Bob Gibson's illustrious career was a no-hitter here tonight
- 2:24:32Bob, what a thrilling moment. I know that it had to be for you because I cried up in the booth
- 2:24:38Yeah, it certainly was, Jack. It really did seem like we had won the 7th game of the World Series. I really enjoyed it
- 2:24:46It almost seemed during your career, Bob, that you've accomplished everything there is for a pitcher to accomplish
- 2:24:52but you were never going to get one of these because you came so close a couple of times
- 2:24:56Well, I honestly didn't believe that I ever would basically because I'm a highball pitcher and most hitters are highball hitters
- 2:25:04Usually you make pitches up there and if they don't hit it hard, they usually hit it over the infill or in the holes
- 2:25:10And you had some tough hitters in that 9th inning. They're tough throughout the entire ballgame
- 2:25:14but with the pressure on the line and everybody knew that you had a no-hitter going from the 4th inning on
- 2:25:20to the 7th inning is when I first took note of it and I kept talking about it on the broadcast
- 2:25:24Well, there's no doubt I was aware of it from the first inning on and after I got past the 7th inning
- 2:25:30or at least when I got into the 7th inning is when I really started pitching like I wanted to pitch a no-hitter
- 2:25:38Joe Torrey, you said that you told them before the game you were going to throw one
- 2:25:41Yeah, I did, but we always say that
- 2:25:43Bob, the last game I know I had to crush you knowing you and the way you hate to lose and you did lose that ballgame
- 2:25:51but what a way to bounce back and not only you're a no-hitter Bob, but that makes three in a row from the Pirates
- 2:25:56and moves us closer and that's what it's all about
- 2:25:58That's right. You always say that you got to take them one at a time and of course we were looking forward to this
- 2:26:04four-game series here in Pittsburgh and if we can possibly win that ballgame tomorrow, I think we're on our way
- 2:26:11Bob, I didn't want to see you get that hit the last time you were up and run the bases
- 2:26:16Oh, I don't mind running the bases. I'm in pretty good shape and I don't think that it really takes that much out of you
- 2:26:22unless the weather is pretty hot and say you get two or three hits and you're running doubles and triples
- 2:26:27but just for a pitcher to run down to first or maybe stand on first and run a second or third, I don't think that's going to worry him out
- 2:26:34Bob, any particular ball off the bat that made your heart go pitty patter?
- 2:26:38Well, the only one that really did bother me was a ball that was hit to Cash that bounced and Torrey had to jump to get it
- 2:26:46I thought it was going to bounce over his head
- 2:26:47Had him in the webbing of his glove
- 2:26:49That's right. Just Torrey was in in case he bun it and the ball just about got over his head
- 2:26:54Someone had a line drive at Maxville also
- 2:26:56Yeah, a Mazuraskan, but it wasn't quite the way it looked. It was a slider that was away and he tried to pull it
- 2:27:02When he hit it, I turned around and looked and I could tell pretty well that it was going right to Maxie
- 2:27:07The young catcher hit a ball deep to left center. The crews stayed with all the way
- 2:27:12Yeah, I wasn't worried about that at all. The ball was high enough
- 2:27:15I wasn't worried about a hit. The only thing that I could possibly do is go out of the ballpark and I'm sure he didn't hit it that hard
- 2:27:21The only thing he could do is go out of the ballpark
- 2:27:23Well, that's right. I mean, as far as if the ball comes out, I know it's high enough for him to catch
- 2:27:27Bob, congratulations on the win. We don't want to detain you any longer
- 2:27:31Congratulations to get back on the winning track and you just gave all of us a thrill in the ball club, a big lift along with it
- 2:27:38And now in the record book, it'll say Robert Gibson on this night, August 14th, no hitter against the Pirates. Nice going
- 2:27:44Thank you, Jack
