- 0:16Speaker 1: Plug them in to jag Zam.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm kind of honest Stephen's victory week. We're a little
- 0:19Speaker 2: belated on victory Monday here on jag Zam, but we
- 0:21Speaker 2: are ready to talk about a big win on the
- 0:23Speaker 2: road in San Francisco. Let's start out with our big Things,
- 0:26Speaker 2: brought to you by g e a J Government Employees
- 0:28Speaker 2: Health Association. And took the win because the takeaways continued
- 0:32Speaker 2: to roll in. They had four against the forty nine
- 0:35Speaker 2: ers on Sunday. Devin Lloyd there with two of them
- 0:38Speaker 2: and he had a huge day.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm playing good football, you know, I think as
- 0:42Speaker 3: a team, we're all playing good football. And ultimately, you know,
- 0:46Speaker 3: I'm just focused on playing my best for the team
- 0:48Speaker 3: so we can win. You know, it's a great team win.
- 0:50Speaker 3: This is It was complimentary ball and everybody was playing
- 0:55Speaker 3: together and believe throughout the whole court, throughout the whole game.
- 0:58Speaker 3: So just probably everybody and like I said, we're all
- 1:01Speaker 3: playing off each other.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Brian, I don't know how long the takeaway party is
- 1:06Speaker 2: going to last, but I'm really enjoying it right now
- 1:08Speaker 2: and just to see the change. I know we've talked
- 1:10Speaker 2: about this from last year to this year. The mentality
- 1:12Speaker 2: is completely different, and also to be able to rely
- 1:15Speaker 2: on the defense when being put in tough positions continually
- 1:17Speaker 2: by the offense later in that game.
- 1:19Speaker 4: You know, offensive coaches like to talk about it, it's
- 1:21Speaker 4: all about the ball. Same thing on defense. They are
- 1:24Speaker 4: so aware of the football. You saw the slow mo
- 1:27Speaker 4: I'm sure looking back at the replay of the game
- 1:30Speaker 4: of the punch outs, that Foyer and Dennis Gardak had
- 1:33Speaker 4: the awareness of being able to clench that fist and
- 1:36Speaker 4: punch and get it out before the knees hit the ground.
- 1:39Speaker 4: You know, the ball that was there for Devin Lloyd
- 1:42Speaker 4: almost over his shoulder on the first interception on the
- 1:45Speaker 4: care him to grab it and turn up the field.
- 1:47Speaker 4: You're right, they come in bunches. Eventually the numbers are
- 1:50Speaker 4: going to start to dwindle, but I don't think they'll
- 1:52Speaker 4: ever go away, John, because this football team is so
- 1:56Speaker 4: aware of the football, such a concerted effort to get
- 1:59Speaker 4: that ball out.
- 2:00Speaker 5: Just look at Tyson.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Campbell and what do you thinkgainst the Texans, that's rare.
- 2:03Speaker 4: This team has got that football right on the top
- 2:05Speaker 4: of their mind.
- 2:06Speaker 6: Yeah, and sometimes look, there is a little bit of
- 2:11Speaker 6: a fortune element anytime you have a lot of takeaways
- 2:14Speaker 6: because the ball sort of has to bounce your way
- 2:16Speaker 6: at times. But there's also playing the game in such
- 2:19Speaker 6: a way we perf in positions to get it. Yes,
- 2:22Speaker 6: being all about the ball. Also, remember this team has
- 2:25Speaker 6: led all but I think nine minutes of the season.
- 2:28Speaker 6: They're playing good run defense, which means they are often
- 2:30Speaker 6: in situations to rush the passer, which means getting breakups.
- 2:34Speaker 7: Which means knowing the other team's gonna throw.
- 2:36Speaker 6: So I'm with Brian, I don't it's not going to
- 2:39Speaker 6: continue at a pace of three a game and three
- 2:42Speaker 6: plus a game now, but it's going to continue as
- 2:45Speaker 6: long as they play good defense and as long as
- 2:47Speaker 6: they're a team that is staying ahead because the circumstances
- 2:50Speaker 6: dictate that you can get them.
- 2:52Speaker 2: It's going to a second big thing, which is injury update.
- 2:54Speaker 2: We're gonna hopefully get one entreyvon Walker who had a
- 2:56Speaker 2: wrist injury a little bit later on in the week.
- 2:58Speaker 2: But also when we talk about this defense, offensive line
- 3:00Speaker 2: as well, in a bunch of injuries during the game,
- 3:03Speaker 2: but still able to kind of have that next man
- 3:05Speaker 2: out mentality. Liam Cohen talked about it and.
- 3:08Speaker 8: We got down to Rayon lane in the secondary. He
- 3:12Speaker 8: did a great job of stepping up. Anthony Perkins and
- 3:14Speaker 8: Milo have done a nice job coaching those guys to
- 3:17Speaker 8: know what they're doing. It's hard when you get down
- 3:19Speaker 8: to that, you know, that number in the game in
- 3:20Speaker 8: terms of safety, Jack Kaiser playing, obviously, Monterre Brown, Jarion Jones,
- 3:25Speaker 8: everybody kind of had a hand in this.
- 3:27Speaker 5: But yeah, it was hard.
- 3:28Speaker 8: I mean, we played Sincy down to the wire, right
- 3:30Speaker 8: physical ball game. You play Houston down to the wire,
- 3:33Speaker 8: physical ball game today obviously another physical outing. We got
- 3:37Speaker 8: to look at our schedule, you know, as we go
- 3:39Speaker 8: this week to see how we can take care of
- 3:40Speaker 8: these guys.
- 3:41Speaker 2: John Safety, Eric Murray and Treymon Walker injured on that
- 3:44Speaker 2: same play. Actually, is this kind of you know, the
- 3:46Speaker 2: injuries are stacking up a little bit. We don't know
- 3:48Speaker 2: the severity of all of them just yet, but this
- 3:50Speaker 2: is going to be a more physical football team. Is
- 3:52Speaker 2: this part of the deal somewhat?
- 3:54Speaker 6: I mean, you know, right now, it's it feels like
- 3:58Speaker 6: they've got two guys that are concerned, Trayvon and Eric Murray.
- 4:01Speaker 6: Your four games into the season, that seems sort of
- 4:04Speaker 6: normal pace I don't think either of them are out
- 4:07Speaker 6: for the season at all, according to what I've heard.
- 4:11Speaker 6: But you are going to get more banged up, Brian,
- 4:15Speaker 6: the more physical you play.
- 4:17Speaker 7: This is a physical team. I was really.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Impressed with the way that, you know, good teams generally
- 4:25Speaker 6: you look at the injury report after the game and like, oh,
- 4:27Speaker 6: they got a couple guys hurt. Bad teams, you're writing
- 4:30Speaker 6: about it because that's the reason they lost.
- 4:32Speaker 4: You know, good teams continue to win in situations where
- 4:37Speaker 4: they have to put guys like ryon Lane in. But
- 4:40Speaker 4: if you have to play a long period of time
- 4:42Speaker 4: without players the caliber of Eric Murray and Trayvon Walker,
- 4:46Speaker 4: in other words, difference makers, well then you kind of
- 4:49Speaker 4: become what we've seen in places like Cincinnati and San
- 4:52Speaker 4: Francisco last weekend. You've got to have your frontline players
- 4:55Speaker 4: out there. Kay and John, you and I have talked
- 4:57Speaker 4: about this. Trayvon Walker plays such a Phis style. He
- 5:01Speaker 4: always has, that's nothing new for him. The fact that
- 5:03Speaker 4: he's been so remarkably healthy. I think he had missed
- 5:06Speaker 4: one game in his career at this point, and he's
- 5:09Speaker 4: arguably the most physical player on your football team. To
- 5:13Speaker 4: not have him for an extended period of time is
- 5:15Speaker 4: going to be very difficult to replace because he's such
- 5:18Speaker 4: a game wrecker. And we've been talking about this now,
- 5:20Speaker 4: you know the comparisons between him and Aiden Hutchinson and
- 5:22Speaker 4: who's the better player. This guy is such a good player.
- 5:25Speaker 4: If he's gone for a couple of weeks, they're going.
- 5:27Speaker 5: To feel it.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I think it's at all possible for him to play,
- 5:30Speaker 2: though he will find a way. I know Treyvon will
- 5:31Speaker 2: be out there with a club if he can. So
- 5:33Speaker 2: we'll keep you updated throughout the week as we get
- 5:35Speaker 2: more information about Trayvon's injury. Our final thing today is
- 5:38Speaker 2: going to be talk that talk for big things because
- 5:41Speaker 2: a lot of talking during the week from coach, but
- 5:43Speaker 2: he didn't have a ton to say after the game
- 5:45Speaker 2: about on the field altercation.
- 5:49Speaker 9: Oows, not a big deal, you know, and just keep
- 5:51Speaker 9: that between us.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Now.
- 5:54Speaker 9: We're going to keep that between us. No, they're going
- 5:57Speaker 9: to keep that between us right now. That's it, Liam.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Cohen, Robert Sall going to keep that between them. Brian,
- 6:03Speaker 2: we can talk about it though not a true altercation,
- 6:05Speaker 2: but they were yapping at each other. We heard some
- 6:07Speaker 2: words from Sla earlier in the week saying that complimenting
- 6:11Speaker 2: that Liam Cohen's able to kind of see the signs
- 6:13Speaker 2: of the defense and then adjust at the line of scrimmage,
- 6:16Speaker 2: which I think a lot of teams do, but to
- 6:18Speaker 2: see that out of their coach, I think a lot
- 6:19Speaker 2: of players were excited to see Liam Cohen out there
- 6:21Speaker 2: fighting for his team. Yeah.
- 6:23Speaker 4: I read somewhere that Liam Cohen doesn't back down, and
- 6:25Speaker 4: neither will his team. And for a team that we've
- 6:28Speaker 4: talked about not being very resilient in recent years, Liam
- 6:32Speaker 4: Cohen's the perfect guy to lead them actions not words. Right,
- 6:36Speaker 4: they went out and won. They beat Liam Cohen's defense.
- 6:39Speaker 4: I think it should have been a bigger victory. If
- 6:41Speaker 4: the offense had converted more on third down, it probably
- 6:44Speaker 4: would have been. Liam even said that yesterday the Jaguars
- 6:47Speaker 4: had a commanding victory over the San Francisco forty nine ers,
- 6:50Speaker 4: and so Liam could afford a chirp a little bit
- 6:52Speaker 4: and let his feelings be known to saw. He wouldn't
- 6:55Speaker 4: do it with the media, and I appreciate that. There's
- 6:57Speaker 4: no reason to just keep the thing going. He made
- 6:59Speaker 4: his point to Sola and to the Niners and to
- 7:02Speaker 4: the rest of the league on the field.
- 7:05Speaker 6: Yeah, and I thought he handled it the right way.
- 7:07Speaker 6: I mean, it's if you say something about it publicly.
- 7:10Speaker 6: Now those words sort of attached to it forever. People
- 7:14Speaker 6: go back and they use it. It was one of
- 7:16Speaker 6: the weirder compliments that was maybe a compliment, maybe not,
- 7:20Speaker 6: and maybe it was just really weird and the Jack Howards.
- 7:24Speaker 7: We didn't do anything wrong in this.
- 7:26Speaker 6: Uh, it was clear from listening to Robert Hainsey this
- 7:31Speaker 6: week and uh uh Dennis gardeck uh. The players liked it,
- 7:36Speaker 6: and uh, you know what, what's an NFL season without
- 7:40Speaker 6: some of the This was fun.
- 7:43Speaker 7: The game's supposed to be fun.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Nice to have a little fire. Yeah, I mean John's
- 7:49Speaker 1: rased up.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Let's go all right, say it was on Jag then
- 7:51Speaker 2: we're going to go over all the highlights for you
- 7:52Speaker 2: from a winning week. Four Jags fans you want it's

- 8:05Speaker 2: for fans.
- 8:08Speaker 10: Can't write a better script than that, to be honest,
- 8:12Speaker 10: just woke up today, you know, didn't want to make
- 8:14Speaker 10: it bigger than it was and just live in the
- 8:18Speaker 10: moment and you know see what today had to bring in.
- 8:21Speaker 10: It was a pretty special day, probably one I won't
- 8:23Speaker 10: forget that.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Smile from Eric Armstead says a lot. I don't think
- 8:28Speaker 2: he will forget that game. And getting to go back
- 8:29Speaker 2: to the team that he played for for quite a
- 8:31Speaker 2: long time and let him go.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I think that's a pretty fitting ending.
- 8:34Speaker 5: Do you remember a training camp when the story was
- 8:36Speaker 5: where's Eric Ormstead? Right? Is he going to play this year?
- 8:39Speaker 5: We need him this year?
- 8:40Speaker 4: He went to such extraordinary links and people don't know
- 8:43Speaker 4: and I won't detail it, but he went to extraordinary
- 8:46Speaker 4: links to be able to get back on the field.
- 8:48Speaker 4: And here he is now making the biggest play of
- 8:51Speaker 4: the ball game, in the biggest ball game of the year.
- 8:54Speaker 4: John had a place where they hadn't won. I mean,
- 8:56Speaker 4: he's a good football player and he's playing well right now.
- 8:58Speaker 4: It's really important for the Jaguars that he can team
- 9:00Speaker 4: used to.
- 9:00Speaker 6: Yeah, I smiled when you said that because preseason storylines.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Right sure seemed very important.
- 9:06Speaker 6: Remember preceed and storyline when they couldn't get lined up
- 9:08Speaker 6: and it's gonna be an atrocious defense. Well, you know
- 9:11Speaker 6: in preseason, just relaxed. But yes, credit Derek Armstead made
- 9:16Speaker 6: a huge play. And I said before the game sometimes
- 9:19Speaker 6: pregame storylines about players going back places don't mean much.
- 9:23Speaker 6: But they let him go, and so good for him
- 9:27Speaker 6: that he had that moment. He's been a big reason
- 9:32Speaker 6: why they're a really good run defense this year and
- 9:34Speaker 6: why the defensive front's played so well.
- 9:36Speaker 2: The change of position for him has been huge. It's
- 9:38Speaker 2: like completely different from what we've seen from him from
- 9:40Speaker 2: last season. All right, let's start out with the defense,
- 9:42Speaker 2: because why not. Dennis Gardak another free agent addition to
- 9:45Speaker 2: this team coming in, and we talked about the takeaway parade.
- 9:49Speaker 2: It continued into this game. I don't know how long
- 9:51Speaker 2: it's gonna last. I'm loving it while it is lasting.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Just the relentlessness. And I know we're gonna get to
- 9:57Speaker 2: Devin Lloyd a a little bit later on. But a
- 9:59Speaker 2: lot of the different players and defense talking about playing
- 10:01Speaker 2: free and they can just focus on where the football
- 10:04Speaker 2: is at all times, not getting bogged down too much
- 10:06Speaker 2: in the details.
- 10:06Speaker 1: That seems to be really working for them right now.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Listen, this is the perfect example of what I talked
- 10:10Speaker 4: about off the top of the show thinking and turning
- 10:13Speaker 4: and punching that ball out, not just getting the guy
- 10:15Speaker 4: on the ground. It is what they do, it is
- 10:18Speaker 4: who they are.
- 10:20Speaker 6: And then there's awareness, you know, they make the play
- 10:23Speaker 6: after the balls on the ground. And again I'm not
- 10:26Speaker 6: trying to not get into the takeaway theme because you can't.
- 10:30Speaker 6: But what's gonna last and what's creating some of these
- 10:34Speaker 6: is Dennis Gardik mentioned it the other day, the physicality
- 10:38Speaker 6: with which they play. They're all about getting off blocks
- 10:41Speaker 6: and they're about hitting, and Gardik talked about it being
- 10:43Speaker 6: refreshing to play for a defense that plays the right way.
- 10:48Speaker 6: The hitting and the violence is not gonna go away
- 10:50Speaker 6: even the takeaways.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Do Just look at the way that he turns away
- 10:53Speaker 4: from his guy and runs immediately to punch that out.
- 10:56Speaker 4: I've never seen that in Jacksonville before. It is sensation
- 11:00Speaker 4: to watch these guys go for the ball.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Oh, let's take a look at the offense now.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Travis Etn's had a bit of a renaissance or resurgence
- 11:07Speaker 2: if you will, with the focus on the run that
- 11:10Speaker 2: Liam Cohen has been having. John I know we talked
- 11:12Speaker 2: about it in the press box. Collen can really coach
- 11:14Speaker 2: up the run, and Travis is fully taking advantage of
- 11:17Speaker 2: all the plays coming his way.
- 11:18Speaker 6: This is a mature running back, still at the peak
- 11:22Speaker 6: of his physical powers, who, unlike when he was in
- 11:25Speaker 6: his second year, knows how to run and he's talked
- 11:29Speaker 6: about it a lot. When he first got into the NFL,
- 11:31Speaker 6: he was running like he did in college, which meant
- 11:34Speaker 6: he was better than everybody in college and run away
- 11:36Speaker 6: from people. This run here, if you notice, he got
- 11:38Speaker 6: an unbelievable blocking. But at the end when he makes
- 11:41Speaker 6: the cut in, I don't think he makes this play
- 11:43Speaker 6: as a rookie. I think he runs out of bounds
- 11:45Speaker 6: or gets run out of bounds. And I'm saying this
- 11:47Speaker 6: as a he has turned into a professional. His professionalism
- 11:52Speaker 6: and his work ethic made this touchdown.
- 11:54Speaker 4: This wasn't even my favorite run of the game. I mean,
- 11:56Speaker 4: being slightly facetious. Who doesn't love a forty eight yard
- 11:58Speaker 4: touchdown run. But eleven yard run up the middle for
- 12:01Speaker 4: a first down. We didn't see that from him last
- 12:04Speaker 4: year when they handed him the ball between the tackles
- 12:06Speaker 4: most often he was stuck at the line of scrimmage
- 12:08Speaker 4: for a one yard gain or a one yard loss.
- 12:10Speaker 4: His confidence level is at an all time high. The
- 12:13Speaker 4: coach mentioned it in his press conference on Monday afternoon.
- 12:17Speaker 4: He's playing at a really, really high level, and it's
- 12:20Speaker 4: good for him because he's in the fifth year option,
- 12:22Speaker 4: he's looking for a contract next year. He's delivering. The
- 12:25Speaker 4: team is winning because of it. He's a great story.
- 12:28Speaker 6: And I hope people remember this next off season or
- 12:31Speaker 6: early next season when there's talk of trading a good
- 12:34Speaker 6: player who's in his last year of his contract, everybody
- 12:37Speaker 6: alays wants to trade those guys. The current season counts
- 12:40Speaker 6: and Traves d Tan is exactly why you don't trade
- 12:44Speaker 6: good football.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Players, some of the most motivated people on your squad
- 12:47Speaker 2: as well. Let's look here the crazy catch by Pearsol,
- 12:52Speaker 2: because I just want to take another look at what
- 12:54Speaker 2: he was able to do in this game. That was
- 12:55Speaker 2: probably the only big target they had because of injury availability.
- 12:58Speaker 2: But Tyson ca on the coverage here, just crazy to
- 13:01Speaker 2: come down with this catch here. But then again, the defense,
- 13:04Speaker 2: when we're talking about resiliency, letting up a big play
- 13:06Speaker 2: like that, not letting that spiral on them, not letting
- 13:09Speaker 2: that turn into momentum, and then Devin Lloyd coming back
- 13:13Speaker 2: after that getting his first interception of the game because
- 13:15Speaker 2: he had two attacking It's just amazing. And that's you know,
- 13:19Speaker 2: and look at all the Teal jerseys around and the
- 13:21Speaker 2: coverage is great anyway, but just to come away with
- 13:23Speaker 2: the ball there.
- 13:24Speaker 4: This defense, for lack of a better phrase, they're like
- 13:26Speaker 4: a wrench in a machine, you know. I mean, just
- 13:28Speaker 4: as soon as you think that you've got some sort
- 13:31Speaker 4: of rhythm going with a long past to pure soul, right,
- 13:34Speaker 4: they come back and take the ball away. They just
- 13:38Speaker 4: disrupt and keep you from feeling like you can get
- 13:41Speaker 4: anything going right now. I know the long drive against
- 13:44Speaker 4: the Bengals they didn't. But the rest of the time
- 13:46Speaker 4: this season they've been remarkable at just breaking a team's rhythm.
- 13:50Speaker 7: But they did against the Bengals. They got them off
- 13:52Speaker 7: the field, and that's a bad call.
- 13:54Speaker 6: It This is credit to approach these turnovers NFL these days,
- 14:01Speaker 6: it is designed that you're going to have Ricky Piersoll plays,
- 14:06Speaker 6: So Campanelli's approach and good defensive coordinators these days, look,
- 14:10Speaker 6: you're going to give up plays. The key is effort
- 14:15Speaker 6: in the moment and eventually if you give that effort.
- 14:19Speaker 7: I think it was.
- 14:19Speaker 6: Guardac said yesterday. God rewards those who hustle or who
- 14:25Speaker 6: r under the ball. That's what NFL defense is these days.
- 14:27Speaker 6: You're not going to hold teams to eighty yards. You
- 14:30Speaker 6: need to get turnovers. You can to make plays in
- 14:32Speaker 6: the big moments. And as far as Devin Lloyd look
- 14:34Speaker 6: for four years, getting around the ball at times has
- 14:37Speaker 6: been a problem.
- 14:38Speaker 7: When he's around the ball, he makes plays.
- 14:41Speaker 6: He makes interceptions as a rookie, so seeing him make
- 14:44Speaker 6: plays around the ball isn't surprising. About the only time
- 14:47Speaker 6: he didn't was the year he had a hand injury
- 14:50Speaker 6: and he had his hands on the ball four or
- 14:52Speaker 6: five times and dropped it because he only had one hand.
- 14:55Speaker 7: This kid could make plays.
- 14:58Speaker 6: For a man of his size, to be able to
- 15:00Speaker 6: have hands like this and make plays is really unusual
- 15:03Speaker 6: and good on him for right now in the.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Size being the key issue.
- 15:06Speaker 4: I mean, you see him standing there in front of
- 15:08Speaker 4: that podium, and how big, how long his arms are,
- 15:10Speaker 4: how broad his shoulders are. They just earned a lot
- 15:12Speaker 4: of linebackers. Most linebackers in this league are for a Lukon,
- 15:15Speaker 4: they're Ventrel Miller. They're around six foot one, maybe six
- 15:18Speaker 4: foot two two hundred and twenty five pounds. This guy
- 15:21Speaker 4: is a physical specimen from a throwback era. If you've
- 15:24Speaker 4: got him playing, well, man, do you have something on
- 15:27Speaker 4: this defense?
- 15:28Speaker 2: Let's take a look at the first touchdown from the
- 15:30Speaker 2: play before. We got a big third down catch out
- 15:33Speaker 2: of Travis Hunter. And we know there's always at least
- 15:36Speaker 2: one play we see what he does on defense, but
- 15:38Speaker 2: on offense, there's always one play game where you're like, oh,
- 15:41Speaker 2: and like, that's I think what people want more out
- 15:43Speaker 2: of him. But just for him to go up and
- 15:44Speaker 2: grab that come down with it, I think they looked
- 15:48Speaker 2: at the play. I don't think there's anything to overturn
- 15:49Speaker 2: whether he caught it or not, But just in that moment,
- 15:53Speaker 2: that's what you need from him.
- 15:54Speaker 6: Like I said before the season, I didn't know what
- 15:57Speaker 6: his stats were going to be. Offensively, you could tell,
- 16:01Speaker 6: and you still can tell he's a really good cornerback,
- 16:04Speaker 6: but I thought offensively there was going to be a
- 16:06Speaker 6: chance that people were going there's haters out there in
- 16:09Speaker 6: this world, right you know that haters. Well, that the
- 16:13Speaker 6: haters were not going to like his stats because they
- 16:16Speaker 6: were going to expect twelve hundred yards and twelve touchdowns,
- 16:18Speaker 6: I don't think he's that. But think about the last
- 16:20Speaker 6: two weeks against against Houston, he has the play where
- 16:25Speaker 6: he turns a short pass into a first down. It's
- 16:28Speaker 6: a field goal at the end of that drive, and
- 16:30Speaker 6: they wind up winning about seven points.
- 16:33Speaker 7: I'm not sure they win this game without this play.
- 16:35Speaker 5: No, I don't think they do.
- 16:36Speaker 6: So those are two back to back weeks where if
- 16:39Speaker 6: you're trying to hate on Travis Hunter, okay, the stats,
- 16:42Speaker 6: if you're watching the impact he makes on this team,
- 16:45Speaker 6: big moment plays, which by the way, we didn't have
- 16:47Speaker 6: a lot of last year around here.
- 16:49Speaker 4: He makes big moment plays. Well, you said it all
- 16:51Speaker 4: through the course of training camp. If you get two
- 16:53Speaker 4: or three plays like this from him a game and
- 16:55Speaker 4: they lead to a win, you're happy. The stats don't
- 16:58Speaker 4: matter at all. And the fact is is that they've
- 17:00Speaker 4: been able to deploy him john where they need him
- 17:02Speaker 4: on offense because you don't have Dianmi Brown a couple
- 17:05Speaker 4: of weeks ago. You need him in Cincinnati because they
- 17:08Speaker 4: play so well with those big receivers out there. He
- 17:11Speaker 4: is a very talented player. I think at some point
- 17:13Speaker 4: in his career we're going to see numbers from him
- 17:16Speaker 4: touchdowns and interceptions, but at this point in his career,
- 17:19Speaker 4: number two overall pick under scrutiny because the Jaguars traded
- 17:22Speaker 4: a lot to get him, He's delivered.
- 17:24Speaker 6: It's three straight weeks with the impact play. Because if
- 17:27Speaker 6: you're judging this, he made an impact play against Cincinnati.
- 17:29Speaker 7: Should have won the game, Yes he did.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Let's take a look at the McCaffrey touchdown because obviously
- 17:33Speaker 2: we knew Christian McCaffrey is going to be a main
- 17:35Speaker 2: focus of their offense, and relatively for McCaffrey held in check,
- 17:39Speaker 2: I mean he was going to get his anyway. This
- 17:40Speaker 2: is where some of the injuries kind of come into play.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Don't see if Foyer looking in on this, Jack Heiser's
- 17:45Speaker 2: in I think at this point in the game, he's
- 17:46Speaker 2: dealing with another person dealing with some injuries. He did
- 17:48Speaker 2: finish the game, but it shows you the importance of
- 17:52Speaker 2: some of that linebacker play when they're not in there,
- 17:53Speaker 2: and Trayvon for that matter, when they're not in there well.
- 17:56Speaker 4: And this shows you also that Kyle Shanahan with McCaffrey
- 18:00Speaker 4: uses a lot of trick plays. I don't know what
- 18:02Speaker 4: he called this a trick player, not it's a shovel pass,
- 18:05Speaker 4: but that in the hook and ladder were things that
- 18:07Speaker 4: created misdirection and took advantage of guys who were out
- 18:10Speaker 4: of the football game.
- 18:11Speaker 5: And they found a way.
- 18:12Speaker 4: The NFL is built for plays like this, for players
- 18:16Speaker 4: like this, and for the Jaguars to just kind of
- 18:18Speaker 4: hold their hand out and keep the Niners from coming
- 18:20Speaker 4: back is a testament to that defense and the guys
- 18:23Speaker 4: that were in there on that play.
- 18:24Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm not sure that play happens if Trayvon's in
- 18:26Speaker 6: the game or Foyer, but when Christ McCaffrey's on the
- 18:30Speaker 6: other side of the ball, at some point, the other
- 18:33Speaker 6: team is going to score a couple of touchdowns because
- 18:36Speaker 6: he's elite. So this was a game that I thought
- 18:41Speaker 6: really showed NFL defense, Like we talked about before, you're
- 18:44Speaker 6: going to give up yours.
- 18:45Speaker 7: I mean, you know you're going to give up theirs.
- 18:47Speaker 7: You got to get yours when you have a chance.
- 18:48Speaker 5: That they did.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Let's take a little jump ahead and look at Parker's
- 18:52Speaker 2: kick return, because we know what he's capable of.
- 18:54Speaker 1: We've seen him do this before. We didn't London last year.
- 18:57Speaker 2: But I feel like at times at least from my perspective,
- 19:00Speaker 2: getting a little caught up in trying to jupe people
- 19:03Speaker 2: out in the beginning, sometimes not necessarily taking the lanes,
- 19:05Speaker 2: but he absolutely did it on this one and took
- 19:07Speaker 2: it to the house.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:08Speaker 6: I don't know that he is necessarily going to ever
- 19:13Speaker 6: be the NFL's best punt returner for a season. But
- 19:18Speaker 6: here's what he does that's so good. He catches the
- 19:21Speaker 6: ball back there, he's reliable, and then when.
- 19:25Speaker 7: It opens up like this, he takes it.
- 19:28Speaker 6: He's done this twice so again, there are times that
- 19:32Speaker 6: it feels like he dances, but this time he made
- 19:34Speaker 6: a move and he went. So I think they like
- 19:37Speaker 6: the fact that they can rely on him and every
- 19:40Speaker 6: once in a while he's got a chance to go.
- 19:42Speaker 11: You know.
- 19:43Speaker 4: He reminds me of Maurice Jones, Drew and people who
- 19:45Speaker 4: were around when he was a young player. Remember, because
- 19:48Speaker 4: of Fred Taylor, the drag Wars could afford to put
- 19:50Speaker 4: him out there to return punts and kickoffs, and he
- 19:52Speaker 4: had a couple of touchdowns. Again, just because of his build,
- 19:55Speaker 4: he was never going to be that guy that just
- 19:58Speaker 4: got into a lane and outran people.
- 20:00Speaker 5: But he joked a little bit and got.
- 20:01Speaker 4: His hips moving in one direction and his shoulders in another,
- 20:04Speaker 4: and got to the outside and found ways to get
- 20:06Speaker 4: to the end zone. That's what I was thinking of
- 20:08Speaker 4: watching him return that. The other day, he had a
- 20:11Speaker 4: punt return and a kickoff return against the Colts in
- 20:14Speaker 4: his career, and in both of those he just made
- 20:17Speaker 4: guys miss I think this guy can do the same thing.
- 20:21Speaker 7: And credit this kid.
- 20:22Speaker 6: He came in and he really didn't have a standout
- 20:25Speaker 6: rookie season. It seems like he was trying to figure
- 20:28Speaker 6: things out late round pick. He could have easily disappeared
- 20:33Speaker 6: into the woodwork in the NFL and has is a
- 20:38Speaker 6: huge contributor for this team even this year.
- 20:42Speaker 7: Three wide receivers, he was the fourth guy.
- 20:45Speaker 6: He matters and it's hard from the position he was
- 20:48Speaker 6: in to work yourself into a position where you matter
- 20:51Speaker 6: in the NFL.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Two players that we've talked about in this segment alone
- 20:54Speaker 4: who amplify what you were just talking about, Parker Washington
- 20:57Speaker 4: and Devin Lloyd. Two guys that took a little time
- 21:00Speaker 4: to get their feet underneath them and needed some coaching
- 21:02Speaker 4: and the right system to come along and put them
- 21:04Speaker 4: in a place where their talents could be featured, but
- 21:07Speaker 4: patience is sometimes a lost virtue in professional football.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Young players need time.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Let's go to our final takeaway of the game, because
- 21:16Speaker 2: we had Eric Armstead talking about it off the top
- 21:18Speaker 2: and in a drive where you know, the Jaguars are
- 21:22Speaker 2: leading here, but forty nine ers have the ball. If
- 21:25Speaker 2: they go down to score touchdown, they're going to win
- 21:26Speaker 2: this game. Didn't even give them the chance to get
- 21:28Speaker 2: into it.
- 21:29Speaker 6: Yeah, at this point you're sort of counting time, and
- 21:32Speaker 6: I think everybody was sort of saying, Okay, if they
- 21:35Speaker 6: score with you know, forty seconds left, can they go
- 21:38Speaker 6: down and get cam little. I mean, it's become such
- 21:40Speaker 6: a game of circumstance in the last three minutes like that,
- 21:45Speaker 6: and then all of a sudden you look up and
- 21:46Speaker 6: the balls on the ground and jars. So we've talked
- 21:53Speaker 6: about it the last couple of years. Year and a half,
- 21:55Speaker 6: they didn't make plays at the end of games like this,
- 21:58Speaker 6: and the difference and good teams. I mean, here about
- 22:02Speaker 6: an ugly win, Brian and oh had it. Good seasons
- 22:07Speaker 6: are built on victories like that.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Where's the column for ugly wins as opposed to be
- 22:11Speaker 4: pretty wins? We haven't had enough of those around here
- 22:13Speaker 4: to discern either way. I'll just say this, the man
- 22:15Speaker 4: in the middle to have Eric Armstead there in the
- 22:17Speaker 4: middle being blocked with a long arms to reach out
- 22:21Speaker 4: and take the ball again awareness of the ball.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Winning is winning, fellas, winning is winning. Jags are three
- 22:28Speaker 2: and one. Stay with us after the break. We're gonna
- 22:30Speaker 2: give you our hot takes coming up. Jagsam brought to
- 22:38Speaker 2: you today by Firehouse Subs. Will get your hot takes
- 22:40Speaker 2: as well.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, we're it's a great start for us.
- 22:46Speaker 11: Like I've said the last couple of weeks, I mean
- 22:48Speaker 11: it's early in the year still, but the way we've
- 22:51Speaker 11: won a couple of these games, and I think just
- 22:54Speaker 11: in any game, there's gonna be adversity and ups and downs,
- 22:56Speaker 11: and just the way we've handled them has been it's
- 22:58Speaker 11: been awesome. Teams really coming together, getting behind each other,
- 23:02Speaker 11: playing complimentary football. When something happens, we really take advantage
- 23:05Speaker 11: of the momentum swings. I think that was a big
- 23:06Speaker 11: thing to there, and we just play a full game.
- 23:10Speaker 11: You don't know what the next play is gonna hold.
- 23:12Speaker 11: Just even if something bad happened to play before, just
- 23:15Speaker 11: play the next play. Keep looking forward, and I think
- 23:17Speaker 11: this team's done a good job of that, but we
- 23:19Speaker 11: gotta keep keep doing it.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I keep doing it, keep getting better week by week.
- 23:23Speaker 1: But the team's three and one, so I'm not going
- 23:25Speaker 1: to complain too much at this point. Brian. When you
- 23:28Speaker 1: look at the scene, what is your hot take for
- 23:29Speaker 1: us today?
- 23:30Speaker 5: Enjoy them? Why you got it?
- 23:32Speaker 4: The defensive coordinator and the job that he is doing
- 23:34Speaker 4: is catching people's attention around the league after just a month,
- 23:38Speaker 4: and again, thirteen takeaways is a striking number.
- 23:42Speaker 5: But the Jaguars defense John was so awful last year.
- 23:46Speaker 4: They couldn't stop anybody, and of course we all know
- 23:49Speaker 4: they only created eight of the team's nine takeaways last year.
- 23:53Speaker 5: Keipan Eely is a guy.
- 23:54Speaker 4: He was in Miami, he was in Green Bay, so
- 23:55Speaker 4: he's been exposed around the league as an up and comer.
- 23:59Speaker 4: But what he's able to do in the first month
- 24:01Speaker 4: has a lot of people saying who is this guy?
- 24:04Speaker 5: How good is he?
- 24:06Speaker 4: And we all know how personable he is, how his
- 24:08Speaker 4: players love playing for him. I'm not saying he's gone
- 24:11Speaker 4: after this year, that a job comes open and he
- 24:13Speaker 4: gets it, but his name is going to start making
- 24:15Speaker 4: shortlists of people because of the job that he has done.
- 24:19Speaker 5: He is that good of a young coach.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Yeah, I shook his hand in February, and ten minutes
- 24:24Speaker 6: after I shook his hands, say, this guy's gonna be
- 24:25Speaker 6: a head coach some.
- 24:26Speaker 7: Day because he takes the right approach.
- 24:29Speaker 6: Look, the defense is great, but he's going to be
- 24:32Speaker 6: an outstanding head coach when it comes to his opportunity because
- 24:35Speaker 6: he can connect with players. And again, what the league's
- 24:38Speaker 6: going to see when they look at this defense. The
- 24:41Speaker 6: takeaways are great. That can be short term. The way
- 24:45Speaker 6: they play and the way they hit, the way they come.
- 24:47Speaker 7: Off blocks, that's what's sustainable.
- 24:50Speaker 6: That's what he preaches and that's why he's that will
- 24:54Speaker 6: eventually be.
- 24:54Speaker 7: The calling card.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Well, and I got a call from a guy on
- 24:56Speaker 4: Sunday night that I've known for a long time in
- 24:58Speaker 4: respect and he goes, listen, You're number may never be
- 25:00Speaker 4: great because you kind of play that bend but don't break.
- 25:02Speaker 4: But he goes, look at the numbers against the run,
- 25:04Speaker 4: and the Jaguars are very highly rated against the run.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Look at the takeaways, and look at the points. If
- 25:08Speaker 4: you just look at those three categories and then compare
- 25:11Speaker 4: them to last year. That's why people are all of
- 25:13Speaker 4: a sudden tuning their attention to the Jaguars defense.
- 25:16Speaker 5: They're very good in the most important categories.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 25:18Speaker 2: And when we talk about coach Campinelli, I think one
- 25:20Speaker 2: of the big things is he's very authentic and the
- 25:22Speaker 2: players love that. Why would they not, Because you can
- 25:25Speaker 2: come in with the bravado and a persona, but if
- 25:27Speaker 2: that's not genuinely who you are, the players can tell
- 25:30Speaker 2: that and you're not going to get the buy in.
- 25:31Speaker 1: But he's genuinely who he is.
- 25:32Speaker 4: And one more quick note, that's what Liam Cohen signed
- 25:35Speaker 4: up for. He knew that he was hiring a young
- 25:37Speaker 4: coach that was very highly regarded and very talented. When
- 25:40Speaker 4: you hire a staff, you want guys that draw the
- 25:43Speaker 4: attention of other people. You want to lose them that quickly,
- 25:45Speaker 4: but you understand they're doing such a good job that
- 25:48Speaker 4: their names are going to come up.
- 25:49Speaker 5: If you have that, you're building.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Something the right way and you're doing something right. John,
- 25:53Speaker 2: what's your hot take for us today?
- 25:55Speaker 6: This is as real as it's been a long time
- 25:57Speaker 6: in a long long time around here. I'm talking about
- 26:01Speaker 6: that three and one start. I keep getting emails about
- 26:04Speaker 6: where they're winning ugly. They're not doing this. I thought
- 26:07Speaker 6: Liam Cohen explained this very well when he spoke to
- 26:11Speaker 6: me the Monday after the game. It really struck me.
- 26:14Speaker 6: The deal where they've only trailed for nine minutes is
- 26:18Speaker 6: a real thing, meaning they're in control of these games.
- 26:22Speaker 6: They're playing with the lead, they're getting up a break
- 26:25Speaker 6: to use a tennis term, and then they're holding it out.
- 26:28Speaker 6: That's hard to do in the NFL, even with some
- 26:31Speaker 6: of the flaws, even with not closing.
- 26:32Speaker 7: Out or whatever. You're always playing with the edge so.
- 26:36Speaker 6: You're in control of the game. They've done that four
- 26:39Speaker 6: weeks and they lost one they should have won. To
- 26:45Speaker 6: be in control of four straight games in the NFL,
- 26:48Speaker 6: no matter who the opponent, that's solid, and this foundation
- 26:54Speaker 6: that they're building, Brian feels very very solid moving forward
- 26:58Speaker 6: to me.
- 26:58Speaker 4: I was just telling someone the other day, I don't
- 27:00Speaker 4: know what the end record will be. I mean, you
- 27:02Speaker 4: don't know how healthy you stay. And it's still a
- 27:04Speaker 4: young team in its first year with Liam Cohen, but
- 27:06Speaker 4: the fundamentals, they run the ball, they stop the run,
- 27:08Speaker 4: they take it away. Listen, Ky, they're three and one
- 27:11Speaker 4: and they've won two in a row, and in those
- 27:13Speaker 4: two wins, they've converted nine of twenty nine on third down.
- 27:18Speaker 4: That's an abysmal number. That's not a winning number. And
- 27:21Speaker 4: yet they're three and one because defense and special teams
- 27:23Speaker 4: have stepped up and the offense has made just enough plays.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Imagine when the Jaguars are converting. I always think of
- 27:30Speaker 4: Peyton Manning and those Colts teams because they were always
- 27:32Speaker 4: converting around fifty five percent on third down.
- 27:35Speaker 7: John, you know you got a standard.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Yeah, if you can get to forty seven percent, forty seven.
- 27:40Speaker 5: They're like thirty three right now.
- 27:42Speaker 4: But if you can just convert a couple more of those,
- 27:44Speaker 4: think about how you dominate time of possession, think about
- 27:47Speaker 4: how you score more points. I thought that the Jaguars
- 27:50Speaker 4: should have won that game by a much more impressive number,
- 27:53Speaker 4: and Liam even said it on Monday afternoon in a
- 27:55Speaker 4: Zoom press conference.
- 27:56Speaker 5: It should have been a bigger win.
- 27:58Speaker 4: Why wasn't it a more dominating when they couldn't stay
- 28:01Speaker 4: on the field offensively, When they are staying on the
- 28:03Speaker 4: field and that defense is getting more time to rest,
- 28:06Speaker 4: this thing can look a lot better than it does
- 28:08Speaker 4: right now. And three on one looks pretty good.
- 28:10Speaker 2: It still does with room for improvement. I'm going to
- 28:12Speaker 2: give a little shout out to the coaching staff. My
- 28:14Speaker 2: hot take is players play, but Schemer's scheme. We talk
- 28:17Speaker 2: a lot about the players having to go out there
- 28:19Speaker 2: make the plays, so Jimmys and Joe's not Ex's and O's.
- 28:22Speaker 2: But I'm going to give some credit to the coaching
- 28:23Speaker 2: staff here because we are seeing play out of players
- 28:26Speaker 2: that were here last year and they are completely different levels.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Devin Lloyd, we're talking about Travis Dtn, Eric Arms said
- 28:32Speaker 2: back to his original position. Even Anton Harrison on the
- 28:35Speaker 2: offensive line, we've seen him look more like he did
- 28:37Speaker 2: his rookie season. And so for me, yes, coaches are
- 28:41Speaker 2: not out there on the field, but they can set
- 28:43Speaker 2: their players up for success. And what we've seen from
- 28:45Speaker 2: both Campanie and from coach Cohen is that he's putting
- 28:48Speaker 2: his players in a situation where they can go to
- 28:50Speaker 2: their best ability and play to their own strengths, not
- 28:54Speaker 2: getting bogged down with other things. Devin Lloyd, I know,
- 28:57Speaker 2: has talked about playing freer Travis Etn as well, having
- 28:59Speaker 2: the ability to kind of go out there and be
- 29:02Speaker 2: creative with what they're doing not freelancing, but being themselves again.
- 29:06Speaker 2: And to see the resurgent with players who last year
- 29:08Speaker 2: maybe were liabilities at times on the team.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Now your best players.
- 29:12Speaker 4: Since you mentioned Devin Lloyd, Mark Duffner, the longtime linebackers
- 29:14Speaker 4: coach who was a guest on this show, and I
- 29:16Speaker 4: were standing talking during training camp and I said, what's
- 29:18Speaker 4: it going to take for someone to unlock Devin Lloyd?
- 29:22Speaker 4: And he said, it's going to take a great coach
- 29:24Speaker 4: because the guys obviously got the skill set, the physical abilities,
- 29:27Speaker 4: and Devin is a bright guy. It's on the coaches
- 29:30Speaker 4: to get that guy in a spot, and clearly they've
- 29:33Speaker 4: done that.
- 29:35Speaker 2: I love to see it. So I'm going to give
