Latest / Stugotz and Company / Set 2: Glenn Powell: Overrated (w/ Brock Huard)
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Rock, you are going to join us in just a
- 0:23Speaker 1: minute here, five minutes from now. He has the biggest
- 0:26Speaker 1: show going in Seattle. We'll talk to him about the Seahawks,
- 0:28Speaker 1: the health of Sam Darnold. But after just one football game,
- 0:32Speaker 1: an argument is broken out. I have no idea what
- 0:34Speaker 1: Mikey A. and Taylor are arguing about. I have an
- 0:37Speaker 1: idea that it's not about football because, you know, We've
- 0:39Speaker 1: already had those arguments.
- 0:40Speaker 2: What are you guys discussing? What is going on with
- 0:42Speaker 2: the two of you?
- 0:43Speaker 3: So it's tangentially about football because I was saying I'm
- 0:46Speaker 3: watching TV last night and I see a preview for
- 0:49Speaker 3: a TV show. And the second the preview comes on,
- 0:52Speaker 3: I go, okay, right away I could tell this show's
- 0:54Speaker 3: not for me.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Yep.
- 0:56Speaker 3: It's Hulu's new TV series. chad powers starring glenn powell
- 1:01Speaker 3: a disgraced college quarterback who adopts a fake identity to
- 1:05Speaker 3: play football again and it's basically just the skit of
- 1:07Speaker 3: eli manning where eli manning dressed up as chad powers
- 1:11Speaker 3: and now glenn powell is bringing it to tv.
- 1:13Speaker 2: And you have issues with this yeah.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I don't really have issues per se but i could
- 1:17Speaker 3: just see the previews and see glenn powell as an
- 1:20Speaker 3: actor glenn powell pretty overrated as an actor in my opinion.
- 1:24Speaker 5: At least Okay, see, this is where we got into it.
- 1:28Speaker 5: First off, Taylor introduced the whole thing with Mikey A.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I've seen a.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Preview for a show that I can 100% tell you
- 1:35Speaker 5: is not for me. And then he said it was
- 1:38Speaker 5: Chad Powers. And now I haven't seen the show either.
- 1:41Speaker 5: But if the synopsis, the first thing you're going to
- 1:43Speaker 5: say in the synopsis of the show is college football,
- 1:47Speaker 5: you can't dismiss it that quickly, Taylor. You are college football.
- 1:50Speaker 5: You can't dismiss a show that parodies a little bit
- 1:53Speaker 5: of college football. And what's with all the Glenn Powell hate?
- 1:56Speaker 2: Put it on the poll. He's fine. No, put it
- 1:58Speaker 2: on the poll. Glenn Powell, overrated. Yep, that's it. Just
- 2:01Speaker 2: like that. Overrated. Yes or no.
- 2:03Speaker 3: So Mikey's whole argument with Glenn Powell being a good
- 2:06Speaker 3: actor was he was good in Top Gun Maverick. But
- 2:08Speaker 3: in Top Gun Maverick... He was perfect in Top Gun Maverick. Yeah,
- 2:11Speaker 3: but he's not the star in Top Gun Maverick. He's
- 2:13Speaker 3: not even.
- 2:13Speaker 4: He doesn't have.
- 2:14Speaker 2: It's Tom Cruise, then the airplanes. That's it. And Miles Teller.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Miles Teller is clearly out of Glenn Powell, too. Glenn Powell.
- 2:22Speaker 3: He's a fine actor, but Glenn Powell is not your
- 2:26Speaker 3: starring role actor. If you have seen the movie Anyone
- 2:29Speaker 3: But You starring Glenn Powell and Sidney Sweeney, one of
- 2:33Speaker 3: the worst movies I've ever seen.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Mikey, he's right.
- 2:36Speaker 1: They could have casted just about anybody as Goose's son
- 2:39Speaker 1: in Top Gun Maverick and it would have worked.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I mean, he's in a plane. He's in a fighter.
- 2:44Speaker 2: He's a fighter pilot for crying out loud. Spoilers here.
- 2:48Speaker 5: He doesn't play Goose's son.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Miles Teller plays Goose's son. That's right.
- 2:51Speaker 4: My bad.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 2:52Speaker 5: And I would argue the nuanced layer to it is
- 2:56Speaker 5: that Glenn Powell plays a younger version of what Tom
- 3:01Speaker 5: Cruise was in the original 80s movie. Yes. So it's
- 3:04Speaker 5: him trying to deal with himself as a younger. That's
- 3:07Speaker 5: just reading really into it. And as far as the.
- 3:10Speaker 1: No, you're right, though. He was like Val Kilmer in
- 3:12Speaker 1: the original Top Gun. He was the asshole who didn't
- 3:14Speaker 1: believe in Tom Cruise.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Right. Yes. Yep.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 3:18Speaker 5: And the Glenn Powell-Sidney Sweeney movie, that's a movie you
- 3:21Speaker 5: watch on mute. You don't need to listen to that.
- 3:24Speaker 5: They're just two very good-looking people, and that's all you
- 3:26Speaker 5: need to do is just watch those two on mute.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Okay?
- 3:29Speaker 5: That's your fault for watching it.
- 3:31Speaker 1: What is your exact argument, though, that Taylor needs to
- 3:33Speaker 1: give this a chance because the show is about college
- 3:36Speaker 1: football and he is college football?
- 3:40Speaker 5: I don't like him dismissing a show based on college football,
- 3:44Speaker 5: either tangentially as... a show that is a hundred percent
- 3:48Speaker 5: not for me.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:50Speaker 3: It's such a dumb premise though. Like, Oh, this college quarterback,
- 3:53Speaker 3: all of a sudden he goes to the makeup room
- 3:55Speaker 3: and he puts on a prosthetic nose. Like if Arch
- 3:58Speaker 3: Manning tried to come back next year to play college
- 4:01Speaker 3: football for a different team and he just showed up
- 4:03Speaker 3: with a prosthetic nose and everybody was like, oh my God,
- 4:05Speaker 3: who is that? We know it's Arch Manning because of
- 4:08Speaker 3: the way his arm is slinging the football around. It's
- 4:10Speaker 3: a stupid premise.
- 4:11Speaker 2: For the show. I wouldn't be surprised if kids start
- 4:13Speaker 2: doing that and go to LSU. I was going to say,
- 4:17Speaker 2: apparently they don't have to anymore. They just have to
- 4:19Speaker 2: go to LSU. Or find a judge.
- 4:22Speaker 3: It's just here comes Diego Pavia wearing a wig.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yes. No one notices. Watch the same show with Diego Pavia.
- 4:31Speaker 2: You're hooked. Taylor, maybe, maybe now. Did we talk into it?
- 4:36Speaker 4: Perhaps.
- 4:37Speaker 3: No, it's just, my problem is just going to ultimately
- 4:40Speaker 3: come down to Glenn Powell. Glenn Powell overrated. I don't
- 4:43Speaker 3: need to see.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Anything Glenn Powell's in.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Listen, I'll meet you halfway. He's a good other guy.
- 4:49Speaker 5: He can't be your star. If you tell me it's
- 4:52Speaker 5: this guy and this guy and Glenn Powell, I'm in.
- 4:55Speaker 3: The next time I see Glenn Powell in a movie
- 4:58Speaker 3: as the leading role play a good performance will be
- 5:01Speaker 3: the first time.
- 5:01Speaker 2: How about that?
- 5:02Speaker 6: Fair.
- 5:04Speaker 2: He's not a leading man. He's not.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Running man was okay.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Right. But he's Drew Locke, is what he's saying, essentially.
- 5:14Speaker 3: He's the backup quarterback that comes in a couple times
- 5:16Speaker 3: a season. You're like, man, Glenn Powell, if he ever
- 5:18Speaker 3: got a chance to be the star, would really take over.
- 5:21Speaker 3: And then he gets his chance to be the star,
- 5:23Speaker 3: and you're like, oof.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:24Speaker 3: We saw why he's the backup quarterback.
- 5:25Speaker 2: So he's Matt Flynn. He also picked terrible, terrible, terrible roles.
- 5:32Speaker 2: We will not ask Brock Eward about this. Next.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Very excited to have Brock Eward with us. This man
- 5:49Speaker 1: is a monster in Seattle. Brock and Salk, they have
- 5:52Speaker 1: the biggest radio show going. They just had a conversation
- 5:56Speaker 1: with Seahawks head coach Mike McDonald.
- 5:58Speaker 2: The big show in town, man. Gets the head coach
- 6:01Speaker 2: the day after the game. How was that conversation with
- 6:03Speaker 2: Coach McDonald, Brock?
- 6:05Speaker 4: You know, Stu, it has come a long ways.
- 6:08Speaker 6: So we had had Coach Carroll for like a dozen years.
- 6:12Speaker 4: And, you know, Coach Carroll.
- 6:14Speaker 6: You see him up and he loves to go and
- 6:17Speaker 6: maybe over shares like the president of communications.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Dave Pearson is always in that room with us.
- 6:24Speaker 6: And there'll be many times you look at Pete and like, oh,
- 6:27Speaker 6: And coach McDonald kind of the inverse, everything stays in there.
- 6:35Speaker 6: We've had upwards of 17 second pauses on live radio.
- 6:39Speaker 6: So a very thoughtful, thinks through everything processes. You see
- 6:44Speaker 6: it on their sideline demeanor as well between Pete and Mike.
- 6:47Speaker 6: Couldn't be any more different. But over the years, we've gained,
- 6:51Speaker 6: I think, a little bit equity and trust with Mike.
- 6:55Speaker 4: And you felt him on Hard Knocks, right?
- 6:56Speaker 6: Y'all got to see him behind the scenes and just
- 6:59Speaker 6: the most genuine, vulnerable, like just authentic guy there is
- 7:04Speaker 6: and super comfortable in his skin now communicating.
- 7:07Speaker 4: And he was pretty pumped for finding a way, right?
- 7:10Speaker 6: I mean, last night was finding a way when it
- 7:12Speaker 6: looked a little bleak at times, when it was hard,
- 7:15Speaker 6: when there's backups happening. playing and backups in the secondary
- 7:18Speaker 6: and backup a quarterback.
- 7:19Speaker 4: But, man, they got proof of concept.
- 7:22Speaker 6: They believe in their ready squad mentality, and I think
- 7:25Speaker 6: it came to life last night.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Brock, what did Coach have to say about Sam Darnold,
- 7:31Speaker 1: about that injury, and about how long he's expecting Sam
- 7:33Speaker 1: to be out?
- 7:35Speaker 6: Yeah, so I think on the scale of like most
- 7:38Speaker 6: horrific news, Bo Jackson, broken hip, career-threatening, that's a 0% chance.
- 7:45Speaker 6: On the chance of it's just a hip pointer, a
- 7:48Speaker 6: little tweak muscle, he's back next week, that's probably also
- 7:52Speaker 6: like a 0% chance. But there's nothing structural. There's nothing fractured.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Adam reported that last night, Schefter. And then he's had
- 8:01Speaker 6: the MRI this morning, and Coach just kind of shared
- 8:03Speaker 6: with us that– It is more muscular, kind of ligament muscular,
- 8:07Speaker 6: and you don't really know. But as far as, like,
- 8:10Speaker 6: worst case, they dodged that.
- 8:13Speaker 4: And that's good news for Sam and the team.
- 8:16Speaker 6: Now it's like, okay, how quickly does the swelling, the pain,
- 8:19Speaker 6: the functionality, you know, how quickly does all of that
- 8:23Speaker 6: resolve itself? You just don't, you know, with that joint
- 8:25Speaker 6: in particular, you just don't know. I probably doubtful for
- 8:29Speaker 6: 11 days from now with Arizona, but I don't think
- 8:32Speaker 6: it's going to be something hopefully that stretches into the
- 8:35Speaker 6: month long period.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Brock, I didn't think we were going to see a
- 8:37Speaker 3: repeat from the Super Bowl with Drake May just because
- 8:41Speaker 3: of the moving pieces that Seattle had on defense. What
- 8:44Speaker 3: is it about Mike McDonald's defense where every time Drake
- 8:47Speaker 3: May drops back, it seems like he's second guessing what
- 8:50Speaker 3: he's seeing out there.
- 8:52Speaker 6: Because everything is hard. Everything is hard, unless you're Matthew Stafford.
- 8:58Speaker 6: For every other quarterback, everything is pre-snap, post-snap. What am
- 9:03Speaker 6: I looking at? What am I seeing? We had kind
- 9:06Speaker 6: of a fun exercise this offseason through some relationship with
- 9:10Speaker 6: Phillip Rivers and Kirk Cousins to get them to come
- 9:13Speaker 6: onto our show and try to bring to life how
- 9:17Speaker 6: difficult it is to play Mike's scheme. And Phillip was amazing.
- 9:21Speaker 6: I mean, he was so funny. His little Southern deal, like, man,
- 9:25Speaker 6: they just don't give you anything. Like, you just don't,
- 9:27Speaker 6: you know, there's no tell. There's no, you know, usually
- 9:31Speaker 6: somebody gives you something on defense.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Maybe it's the safety, but they don't.
- 9:36Speaker 6: You know, they're disguised and it's so, so hard on
- 9:40Speaker 6: a quarterback, even ones with decades of experience. And then
- 9:44Speaker 6: you get someone like Dre that is still in this system, right?
- 9:48Speaker 4: One year under his belt and they had answers in
- 9:51Speaker 4: the first half, right?
- 9:52Speaker 6: I thought Collinsworth did an awesome job of like, here,
- 9:55Speaker 6: they're going to throw into the pressure. McDonald talked to
- 9:58Speaker 6: us this morning about it. Like, yeah, they made a
- 10:01Speaker 6: You know, they handled their protections differently. They made some adjustments.
- 10:04Speaker 6: They had answers in that first half. And it forced
- 10:07Speaker 6: Mike and staff to then change. And when they adjusted,
- 10:11Speaker 6: Drake and staff could not adjust because there just were
- 10:14Speaker 6: not answers. And you started to see the same look
- 10:16Speaker 6: in his face, the same demeanor in his body that
- 10:20Speaker 6: you saw in that Super Bowl of holy crap. I
- 10:23Speaker 6: don't know what I'm looking at. And I'm making like
- 10:25Speaker 6: juvenile mistakes. I'm throwing late in a double coverage. I'm
- 10:29Speaker 6: throwing late down the seam. And then the final interception
- 10:32Speaker 6: was just, I mean, inexcusable for any level of football
- 10:35Speaker 6: and quarterback play.
- 10:36Speaker 1: You mentioned any level of football. I'm going to play
- 10:38Speaker 1: some sound for you. I just want you to break
- 10:40Speaker 1: it down after you hear it. This is postgame after
- 10:43Speaker 1: the Patriots-Seahawks game, talking about high school football and Drake
- 10:47Speaker 1: May's play.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Listen to this. This is how you do it locally, okay?
- 10:51Speaker 1: After your team has made it to a Super Bowl,
- 10:53Speaker 1: Drake May has taken you to a Super Bowl, but
- 10:55Speaker 1: you start the season 0-1 and lose a game you
- 10:57Speaker 1: probably should have won.
- 10:59Speaker 2: This is how you do it. Play it.
- 11:01Speaker 7: They tried to hide him all night long with high
- 11:04Speaker 7: school plays, with the Zavarian playbook.
- 11:07Speaker 2: High school.
- 11:08Speaker 7: Swing pass, little runs, roll outs to nowhere. High school football.
- 11:14Speaker 7: The second he had to make NFL plays or throws,
- 11:17Speaker 7: he was screwed.
- 11:18Speaker 2: He couldn't do it.
- 11:19Speaker 7: He made one NFL throw all night. That was to
- 11:21Speaker 7: Hollins on one of the third downs. That was a
- 11:23Speaker 7: little bit deep on an in-cut nice timing.
- 11:26Speaker 2: He made high school plays all night long.
- 11:29Speaker 7: That's what happened. And he could not step up. And
- 11:32Speaker 7: that throw to end the game was disgusting. That was
- 11:35Speaker 7: incomprehensible and disgusting. To even put the ball with that
- 11:40Speaker 7: much air under it in that situation.
- 11:42Speaker 4: It was befuddling.
- 11:43Speaker 2: That was a joke. You cannot do that.
- 11:46Speaker 7: He blew this game, and he was bad all night.
- 11:49Speaker 7: I thought the only thing he produced all night was
- 11:52Speaker 7: high school-level plays.
- 11:53Speaker 4: High school, science class, chemistry.
- 11:56Speaker 2: It was awful. I see you laughing, Brock Eward. Yeah.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Well, a few things, number one, the Hasselbeck brothers who
- 12:05Speaker 6: went to the very end brothers, like they're pissed about that.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Okay.
- 12:08Speaker 6: We didn't do that as it does the very end.
- 12:10Speaker 4: So don't throw us under the bus there, Paul. That's
- 12:12Speaker 4: number one.
- 12:13Speaker 6: Number two, that kind of channels Paul Allen from the
- 12:17Speaker 6: Minnesota radio and far through that interception, the NFC title game.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Remember he lost his ever loving mind.
- 12:26Speaker 6: Couldn't believe that throw of Brett Favre in that moment.
- 12:30Speaker 4: So those two things come to mind.
- 12:32Speaker 6: And I would say this like Drake Mays legs were
- 12:35Speaker 6: a big reason why they controlled the first three quarters.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:38Speaker 6: He ran seven times for 47 yards. He scrambled on
- 12:42Speaker 6: a fourth down. He beat a third down edge. He
- 12:45Speaker 6: made Seattle a little bit uncomfortable with his legs. And
- 12:48Speaker 6: he deserves some credit for that because that slowed the
- 12:51Speaker 6: guys down. But then, as I said, when Seattle adjusted,
- 12:55Speaker 6: when they kept him in the pocket, when those checkdowns
- 12:57Speaker 6: turned into collisions. when there's people now covering the little screens,
- 13:01Speaker 6: which they didn't do in the first half. Well, once
- 13:04Speaker 6: that happens, then the wires got busted. Then the game again,
- 13:07Speaker 6: sped up on him in a way where, Hey man,
- 13:09Speaker 6: if you play the position and I have, there's games
- 13:12Speaker 6: and moments where it just blurs where like, I have
- 13:15Speaker 6: amazing clarity. It's slowed down. And now it's like, Holy crap.
- 13:20Speaker 6: Everything is a blur. It's sped up on me. I
- 13:22Speaker 6: don't know what I'm seeing. And yeah, you lead to
- 13:25Speaker 6: some decisions in that fourth quarter that were incomprehensible.
- 13:28Speaker 1: How much do you love tucked away there in the Northwest,
- 13:31Speaker 1: making the city of Boston that angry?
- 13:34Speaker 4: Well, he did it twice in seven months, right?
- 13:37Speaker 6: You know, a little payback for freaking Malcolm Butler because
- 13:40Speaker 6: he made us a little miserable for about, I don't know,
- 13:43Speaker 6: 10 years. So it took the Super Bowl 60 and
- 13:46Speaker 6: seven months later, this one to kind of wash that
- 13:49Speaker 6: taste out of our mouth.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Brock, with how competitive you would imagine the NFC West
- 13:54Speaker 3: is going to be with the Seahawks, the 49ers, and
- 13:57Speaker 3: the Rams, Where's your level of confidence if Sam Darnold
- 14:01Speaker 3: is to miss an extended period of time that Drew
- 14:03Speaker 3: Locke can keep this team afloat and in playoff contention?
- 14:07Speaker 4: Yeah. You know, it's, it's, it's funny guys.
- 14:09Speaker 6: Cause I actually thought also of my older brother, Damon, Damon,
- 14:15Speaker 6: you know, played 12 years in the league. He backed
- 14:17Speaker 6: up Marino, Marino goes down and I think they went
- 14:19Speaker 6: five and one with Jimmy Johnson and that great defense.
- 14:23Speaker 6: And then Damon later on was in Kansas city when
- 14:26Speaker 6: Trent green, like almost died on the field. If you
- 14:29Speaker 6: remember that hit like the worst, most gruesome, he was
- 14:31Speaker 6: like unconscious on the field. Like it was catastrophic. And
- 14:35Speaker 6: I think missed the rest of the year. And Damon
- 14:38Speaker 6: came in and played unbelievable ball. Like he was a
- 14:40Speaker 6: second rated QB in the league that year. And he
- 14:43Speaker 6: would say to you, you know, it made it nice.
- 14:45Speaker 6: Tony Gonzalez and priest Holmes and Will Shields and Dick Vermeule.
- 14:50Speaker 6: And like, he got to play in some freedom that
- 14:52Speaker 6: he never like experienced. Like, this is really cool. And
- 14:56Speaker 6: I think, you know, for a drew lock, this is
- 14:58Speaker 6: the first time now in his seven years where I
- 15:01Speaker 6: got JSN. Like I can throw him a hitch route
- 15:04Speaker 6: and he takes it 50. I got a defense that
- 15:07Speaker 6: can give me the ball over and over again and
- 15:09Speaker 6: field position. And I just thought you felt Drew's confidence
- 15:13Speaker 6: in that second half is just, you know, now the
- 15:16Speaker 6: play calling the operation, trying to spit it out, trying
- 15:19Speaker 6: to read his wristband that looked like the cheesecake factory menu.
- 15:22Speaker 6: Like he wasn't doing too good on some of that,
- 15:25Speaker 6: but I think there's a confidence level, both both personally
- 15:29Speaker 6: for drew and then collectively for the team, like, man,
- 15:32Speaker 6: this is kind of cool.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Like I don't have to do a million things.
- 15:35Speaker 6: If I make five or six great plays a game
- 15:37Speaker 6: and I don't turn it over, we have a chance
- 15:39Speaker 6: to win.
- 15:39Speaker 4: And so yeah, short-term, I don't think a big deal.
- 15:43Speaker 6: If it was a fractured hip and it was a
- 15:45Speaker 6: long-term conversation, then sure. You're talking about, you know, Matthew
- 15:49Speaker 6: Stafford and Brock Purdy and Shanahan McVay, and we'll all
- 15:52Speaker 6: get to watch them in Australia tonight.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Does it bother Seattle fans, the callers to your show,
- 15:58Speaker 1: the fact that all we're doing this offseason is talking
- 16:01Speaker 1: about the Rams and not talking about the team that
- 16:03Speaker 1: beat the Rams to get to the Super Bowl?
- 16:06Speaker 4: Yes, I think hard knocks helped. But I think hard
- 16:09Speaker 4: knocks helped, right? Like, yes.
- 16:11Speaker 6: I think through March and April and, oh, Miles Garrett. Oh,
- 16:15Speaker 6: Aaron Donald.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Like, great. But then, and I knew this was what happens, Stu.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I knew this.
- 16:22Speaker 6: And I was talking about it. I'm like, you know
- 16:24Speaker 6: what's going to happen. Once the world gets to see
- 16:28Speaker 6: and gets a taste and gets a reminder of Leonard Williams, JSN,
- 16:33Speaker 6: Sam Darnold, Mike McDonald, John Schneider inside the walls, you know,
- 16:38Speaker 6: what's going to happen. And sure enough, it did all
- 16:40Speaker 6: of a sudden Pat McAfee is like, Oh yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 4: See our Superbowl team. Like, yeah, I know. I know.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Like they won it last year. They're really, really good.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 16:49Speaker 4: You know, Nick, Nick, right. Oh yeah. But it takes
- 16:53Speaker 4: that exposure.
- 16:54Speaker 7: It does.
- 16:54Speaker 6: It takes seeing it, feeling it, watching it like, Oh yeah,
- 16:58Speaker 6: those are some bad dudes up in Seattle and man,
- 17:00Speaker 6: are they connected with one another too?
- 17:03Speaker 5: Brock, I was just curious, you know, with all that
- 17:05Speaker 5: good Seattle energy, what would you say to somebody who
- 17:09Speaker 5: maybe picked the Seahawks not only to not repeat a
- 17:11Speaker 5: Super Bowl champion, but to completely miss the playoff?
- 17:15Speaker 1: That was me, Brock. I was doing a sports radio thing.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I was hot takes before the season. You know, you
- 17:20Speaker 1: got to take a team, you know, you know. Not
- 17:22Speaker 1: all the teams that made the playoffs last year are
- 17:24Speaker 1: going to make it this year.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Teams that missed it are going to make it this year.
- 17:27Speaker 2: You know that. It's like six per season.
- 17:29Speaker 1: And I just went out on a limb and I
- 17:30Speaker 1: said the Seahawks not making it.
- 17:32Speaker 2: It actually looks good now with a Darnold injury.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Sure. Yeah, I'm sure. Five plays in, you took a shot.
- 17:37Speaker 4: We're like, yeah, I am smart. Yeah, I got this
- 17:41Speaker 4: one right.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Make sure Mike, you got that audio of me.
- 17:45Speaker 4: I was right on that. I knew it.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Are you saying I was celebrating Darnold's injury?
- 17:52Speaker 6: I mean, I'd say that, but it looked a little
- 17:57Speaker 6: bleak in that moment. I would say, here's the thing.
- 18:00Speaker 6: And this is something that like, It's not great for
- 18:03Speaker 6: sports radio. It's not possible for national television. I understand it. Like,
- 18:08Speaker 6: it's impossible to know the teams nationally as well as
- 18:12Speaker 6: we all do locally, live and breathe in all of it. Like,
- 18:14Speaker 6: we know the 70th man on the roster. Like, who
- 18:17Speaker 6: knows that? Well, we do because the Seahawks preach that. Like,
- 18:21Speaker 6: that's where, you know... When Pete Carroll went to USC,
- 18:26Speaker 6: you guys remember this way back when, the early 2000s,
- 18:29Speaker 6: he changed the college football landscape because he said, you
- 18:32Speaker 6: know what we're going to do?
- 18:33Speaker 4: We're going to play freshmen. And I don't care.
- 18:36Speaker 6: You know, in my era, the 90, we win with
- 18:40Speaker 6: 23-year-olds with hair on their chest, not 18-year-olds out of
- 18:42Speaker 6: high school.
- 18:43Speaker 4: So we redshirt everybody. We develop.
- 18:45Speaker 6: And those are the programs that win national titles. And
- 18:48Speaker 6: Pete was like, heck with that. If this 18-year-old's better
- 18:51Speaker 6: and he's ready to play, we're playing them. And we
- 18:53Speaker 6: may take a few lumps, but we're going to win
- 18:55Speaker 6: and develop. And it changed it, and it really did.
- 18:58Speaker 6: And everybody went, man, that's pretty good, Pete. That's pretty
- 19:00Speaker 6: good genius. And I would say that John Schneider and
- 19:05Speaker 6: the Seahawks and Mike are like, we're going to shift
- 19:07Speaker 6: this practice squad, this taxi squad, these backups.
- 19:11Speaker 4: We don't have that.
- 19:12Speaker 6: We like got the ready squad. If you're one of 70,
- 19:16Speaker 6: you're ready. And you look last year at those 17
- 19:19Speaker 6: wins they had.
- 19:20Speaker 4: It was chock.
- 19:21Speaker 6: Full of players, 53 through 70 who made significant plays
- 19:25Speaker 6: week to week 10 playoff games, George Halani, third string
- 19:30Speaker 6: running back. You're going to be ready last night.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Drew drew.
- 19:33Speaker 6: You're going to be ready last night. Nehemiah Pritchett, Rodney
- 19:36Speaker 6: Thomas starters thrust in there.
- 19:38Speaker 4: You guys are going to be ready. And they believe that.
- 19:41Speaker 4: It's not just talk. They really substantially believe it.
- 19:44Speaker 6: And in an era where it's all about attrition, with
- 19:47Speaker 6: who's left standing, who's not hurting the end of the year,
- 19:51Speaker 6: when you have 70 instead of 53, it gives you
- 19:54Speaker 6: a little bit more margin than the rest.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Brock.
- 19:57Speaker 3: I know one thing that Seattle fans weren't happy with
- 19:59Speaker 3: last night was the, the offsides call on the tush push.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Because when you look back at the replay, it didn't
- 20:05Speaker 3: look like anybody was offside, but Do you think this
- 20:08Speaker 3: is just foreshadowing the NFL trying to legislate the tush
- 20:11Speaker 3: push out of the game? Because if so, I'm kind
- 20:13Speaker 3: of a fan of that and getting it out of
- 20:15Speaker 3: the Eagles' playbook.
- 20:18Speaker 6: You know, Taylor, that's exactly what I tweeted. And I
- 20:20Speaker 6: think my mind went with not just Seahawks, but I
- 20:23Speaker 6: think a lot of folks like, okay, if the competition
- 20:26Speaker 6: committee didn't want to do this, which I get, I
- 20:28Speaker 6: don't really want the competition committee to be voting on
- 20:31Speaker 6: this and coaches, whatever, like that.
- 20:34Speaker 4: This is a.
- 20:34Speaker 6: Way to say, you know what, let's really study every
- 20:37Speaker 6: nitty gritty little blade of grass. And if that player
- 20:42Speaker 6: is in any part in that neutral zone, like we're
- 20:45Speaker 6: going to find a way to flag it and take
- 20:47Speaker 6: them out of it. So, yeah, I think this will
- 20:49Speaker 6: be worth watching with Philly and Seattle and some of
- 20:52Speaker 6: the teams that have started to major in that a
- 20:54Speaker 6: little bit, because that's one way to do it. Like
- 20:56Speaker 6: you ain't running that on fourth and six. If you
- 20:59Speaker 6: want to on the field, hold it to the very
- 21:01Speaker 6: end degree and every last little blade of grass, that
- 21:05Speaker 6: might be a way for them to do it.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Brock, we'll get you out of here in a second.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I love the way the team operates. Schneider has so
- 21:11Speaker 1: much confidence. Kenneth Walker wins a Super Bowl MVP. They're like, hey,
- 21:14Speaker 1: you're good. You're a great player. Thank you for the contributions.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Off to Kansas City. We'll take Jadarian Price. And that's
- 21:21Speaker 1: where I was headed with Mikey A before, before he
- 21:23Speaker 1: embarrassed me. And I'm glad that he did. Mikey really
- 21:27Speaker 1: was impressed with Jadarian Price. I was impressed with Jadarian Price.
- 21:31Speaker 1: He needs to get the ball more, no?
- 21:33Speaker 4: He does.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:34Speaker 6: We asked coach to fill in the blank because we
- 21:37Speaker 6: did it with some listeners and Mike and our producer
- 21:40Speaker 6: like Jadarian Price was fill in the blank. And for me,
- 21:44Speaker 6: it was like powerful. There was not a run. He
- 21:47Speaker 6: was knocked on his butt. There was not a run
- 21:49Speaker 6: that he didn't carry somebody forward. There was not a
- 21:51Speaker 6: run that was a little murky and he made more
- 21:54Speaker 6: out of less. So he was a lot of power.
- 21:56Speaker 6: Our producer, Maura, said the exact thing that Mike McDonald
- 22:00Speaker 6: did when he answered.
- 22:00Speaker 4: He said decisive. He was just decisive.
- 22:03Speaker 6: Like that's the first time getting hit in the NFL
- 22:05Speaker 6: game to the ground, right? That's the first time playing
- 22:08Speaker 6: at that speed on a primetime game with the whole
- 22:11Speaker 6: country watching the NFL. And he was right. They have
- 22:14Speaker 6: landmarks on outside zone, man. You got to hit the
- 22:17Speaker 6: outside butt cheek of the tight end. He was right
- 22:19Speaker 6: on his landmark foot in the ground.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Go.
- 22:22Speaker 6: He's got to catch a ball, you know, on a,
- 22:23Speaker 6: on a hot, he caught it. He's got to run
- 22:25Speaker 6: into darkness and make a two yard gain instead of.
- 22:28Speaker 4: A negative one.
- 22:29Speaker 6: So yeah, 10 for 52. I think it was purposeful
- 22:32Speaker 6: to kind of limit some of that early. They were
- 22:35Speaker 6: not going to put the big burden on him, but yeah,
- 22:37Speaker 6: he did nothing to, to not be worthy of that
- 22:41Speaker 6: 32nd pick in the draft and instill some confidence in
- 22:43Speaker 6: the people around him.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:44Speaker 1: It looked really good. What'd you make quickly on the
- 22:46Speaker 1: way out here? of McCready's National Anthem.
- 22:49Speaker 2: What'd you make of that?
- 22:50Speaker 4: Solid. Oh, solid.
- 22:51Speaker 6: I mean, it wasn't Jimmy, right? It wasn't Jimmy. That
- 22:55Speaker 6: was an ode to Jimmy back in the day. You know,
- 22:57Speaker 6: it wasn't Jimmy, but he, yeah, even up there in
- 23:00Speaker 6: some years, he's pretty good. And so was Soundgarden at halftime,
- 23:03Speaker 6: by the way. They kind of brought it too.
- 23:05Speaker 2: No, they're awesome.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Taylor wants vocals for the national anthem. How do you
- 23:07Speaker 1: feel about that? He doesn't like the electric guitar.
- 23:09Speaker 4: I understand it. I understand it.
- 23:11Speaker 6: And frankly, you know, I thought Stapleton pushed Whitney Houston,
- 23:14Speaker 6: like all-time greats. I thought Stapleton Super Bowl was....
- 23:19Speaker 4: I wouldn't mind hearing that a time or two.
- 23:21Speaker 1: All right, Brock and Salk. Biggest show going in Seattle.
- 23:26Speaker 1: We appreciate the time. Thank you for the info on
- 23:28Speaker 1: your conversation with Mike McDonald. That's supposed to be exclusive
- 23:32Speaker 1: to your audience, man.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:34Speaker 4: You know what? Maybe Stapleton, thank you, Stu.
- 23:36Speaker 6: Maybe Stapleton in Whitney Houston's running outfit.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Do that.
- 23:41Speaker 6: Just put here, remember her? Her little running suit on
- 23:45Speaker 6: Chris Stapleton, and we got the anthem of anthems.
- 23:48Speaker 2: I apologize. You were still on the anthem. I'm so sorry.
- 23:51Speaker 7: Yes.
- 23:52Speaker 4: All good.
- 23:53Speaker 2: You'll be thinking about it all day. Congratulations, you're 1-0,
- 23:57Speaker 2: and you pissed off Boston.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Thank you.
