- 1:53Speaker 5: Good morning? Do I use my radio voice.
- 1:55Speaker 2: In the new studio? You have to want to talk
- 1:57Speaker 2: to Rusty And momentarily Pudndham County School Supert John Hudson
- 2:01Speaker 2: is going to be here. Voters in Putnam County will
- 2:03Speaker 2: be looking at an education referendum when they go to
- 2:05Speaker 2: the polls on election day or early voting, which starts
- 2:08Speaker 2: today in West Virginia. We'll talk about that with Superintendent
- 2:11Speaker 2: Hudson speaking of early voting West Virginia. Secretary of State
- 2:14Speaker 2: make Warner coming up a little bit later on on
- 2:16Speaker 2: this first day of early voting, and Republican candidate for House,
- 2:19Speaker 2: Andrew Anderson is here. We are loaded up this morning,
- 2:22Speaker 2: but I want to bring in now our good friend
- 2:24Speaker 2: Rob Reel from our sister station ninety six one KWS,
- 2:27Speaker 2: who continues to walk from Charleston to Morgantown for WVU
- 2:30Speaker 2: Children's his O October, as he calls it, being sponsored
- 2:34Speaker 2: by the folks that panhandle cleaning and restoration. Rob, good morning.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I also have attorney Rusty Web with me, who will
- 2:41Speaker 2: be in the next segment. I figured it was a
- 2:42Speaker 2: good idea to have an attorney standing by here, even
- 2:44Speaker 2: if it is Rusty Web. So what do you souse?
- 2:47Speaker 6: We all do respect the rusty. I hate all attorneys
- 2:49Speaker 6: except mine.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Well, he could be yours, he could be yours, all right,
- 2:54Speaker 2: So how is it? How is the walk on Tuesday?
- 2:56Speaker 6: Bub I went a little Mother nature has been great.
- 3:02Speaker 6: Let me start there. Let me start with the positive
- 3:03Speaker 6: and I did make it to where I had planned
- 3:06Speaker 6: to end yesterday. The disappointment for me yesterday though, was
- 3:12Speaker 6: I really really would have loved to go one more
- 3:15Speaker 6: mile so that I could say, oh, I've got less
- 3:17Speaker 6: I've got fewer than one hundred miles to go, and
- 3:20Speaker 6: I just I had to listen to my body. My
- 3:22Speaker 6: body went, Nope, you are done for the day. Get
- 3:24Speaker 6: your ice cream and take it easy and live to
- 3:28Speaker 6: walk fight another day. So back at it from Normantown
- 3:33Speaker 6: at the country Store and bound for Baldwin today.
- 3:38Speaker 2: That beautiful downtown Baldwin, West Virginia. Are you familiar Rush,
- 3:43Speaker 2: Are you familiar with Baldwin? You know a bald one?
- 3:45Speaker 7: No, I'm not.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Are you in one nineteen? Is that how you're getting
- 3:48Speaker 5: up there?
- 3:48Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 3:48Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, where one nineteen and thirty three are multiplexed.
- 3:52Speaker 7: I'll be on that.
- 3:53Speaker 6: I was on it all day yesterday. I'll be on
- 3:54Speaker 6: it all day again today and all day tomorrow until
- 3:57Speaker 6: I get to weston so one long road this week.
- 4:01Speaker 6: Baldwin is one of those towns where it says welcome
- 4:03Speaker 6: to hear on both sides of the same sign. And
- 4:05Speaker 6: I say that lovingly because I grew up in a
- 4:08Speaker 6: town like that, a one horse down so small that
- 4:11Speaker 6: one horse is a Shetland pony. So this is my
- 4:15Speaker 6: kind of place.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So and you're also getting to enjoy some of God's
- 4:19Speaker 2: handiwork out there with the fall colors too, right, because
- 4:21Speaker 2: but I've seen that you've been posted. It's absolutely beautiful.
- 4:25Speaker 6: And it's not just red, gold and green the way
- 4:27Speaker 6: you think. I mean the shades. You know, there's rust
- 4:32Speaker 6: and there's bronze, and there's copper, and I gotta get
- 4:35Speaker 6: more pictures. So because it's just it is fantastic out here.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Started talking about leaves and rusty web starts sneezing here
- 4:41Speaker 2: in the studio. Yeah, about how it happens. All right,
- 4:44Speaker 2: rob Man, be safe out there, and again you have.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Robin's done a great job of updating everybody with videos
- 4:49Speaker 2: and pictures on the KWS Facebook page. Of course, he's
- 4:52Speaker 2: doing all this for WVU Children's to walk from Charleston
- 4:56Speaker 2: to Morgantown. He left last week. He's due to arrive
- 4:58Speaker 2: at the hospital in Morgantown Halloween.
- 5:00Speaker 8: Knight.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Be safe out there, enjoy the nice weather and we'll
- 5:04Speaker 2: be following along.
- 5:05Speaker 8: Man.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Thanks a lot, Thank you, sir, talk tomorrow, Rob real,
- 5:09Speaker 2: Rob or Rusty rather. You're quite an athlete. But walking
- 5:13Speaker 2: from Charleston to Morgantown at the rid of about twenty
- 5:15Speaker 2: miles a day, that's a little nuts.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Yeah. And he's going to lose weight, sure, right, and
- 5:21Speaker 5: he's going to the weather couldn't be better?
- 5:22Speaker 2: Oh yeah, hdding me, Yeah, I mean the extended forecast.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Things change, you know, but the extended forecasters just like
- 5:27Speaker 2: a slight chance of a sprinkle. But all the way
- 5:31Speaker 2: through his walk, I mean, man, everything looks good. You're
- 5:34Speaker 2: here to talk about tennis as it pertains to your
- 5:38Speaker 2: love and mind. Marshall University.
- 5:39Speaker 9: Yes, yes, man, Well, this is a tournament that's been
- 5:43Speaker 9: going on actually for about thirty years. Martha Hill and
- 5:46Speaker 9: I started it whatever thirty years ago is, and Martha
- 5:51Speaker 9: stayed with it. I helped her a couple of years,
- 5:54Speaker 9: and she stayed with it.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Now I'm kind of back on the committee, and this.
- 5:59Speaker 9: Year, like previous years, the money raised is going to
- 6:04Speaker 9: go to the Marshall University tennis team. It had previously
- 6:06Speaker 9: gone to the alumni Association. Where's something near and dear
- 6:10Speaker 9: to Martha's heart, is sure?
- 6:11Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 6:11Speaker 9: Alumni and near and dear to my heart, of course
- 6:13Speaker 9: is the tennis team, and of course it makes sense
- 6:17Speaker 9: tennis playing tennis for tennis. So we're going to start.
- 6:22Speaker 9: It's happened every year. We're going to start on Thursday
- 6:24Speaker 9: night and play the local players so nobody.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Has to try.
- 6:27Speaker 9: And again, where does it all happens It the YMCA.
- 6:29Speaker 9: I'm sorry, yeah, YMCA. Friday night is we're not playing,
- 6:36Speaker 9: but we're having some activities. So what we're doing Friday
- 6:38Speaker 9: night is we're having a free kids clinic from five
- 6:42Speaker 9: to six, which will be taught by the Marshall players.
- 6:44Speaker 9: We always do that, you know, Thunder in the Mountains.
- 6:48Speaker 9: Then from five to six and then seven to eight,
- 6:52Speaker 9: locals for a donation of fifty dollars to the team
- 6:56Speaker 9: can play fun doubles with Marshall's team.
- 7:01Speaker 5: In other words, you have a player, I have a player.
- 7:03Speaker 9: We're playing doubles against each other and there are about
- 7:07Speaker 9: four slots available, two in the five to six slot
- 7:11Speaker 9: and two in the seven to eight slot. And then
- 7:17Speaker 9: Saturday all day will be tennis, and then Sunday will
- 7:20Speaker 9: be the finals and the team will come back and
- 7:22Speaker 9: take pictures with the winners and finalists. But We're really
- 7:27Speaker 9: encouraging anyone, everyone, but particularly Marshall alumni, but everyone to
- 7:33Speaker 9: come up on Friday evening and meet and greet the team.
- 7:36Speaker 9: And they're going to be silent auctions, door prizes, you know,
- 7:43Speaker 9: just fun things, fun things for you to do. Buy
- 7:46Speaker 9: Marshall tennis apparel, which is you know, not easy to
- 7:50Speaker 9: find because it's in a box and the coach's office.
- 7:55Speaker 9: So and I have a really cool hoodie. I love
- 7:59Speaker 9: it so and all the money is going to go
- 8:02Speaker 9: to Marshall University Tennis. I will tell you that last
- 8:07Speaker 9: at Thunder the Mountains, the winner was from Marshall and
- 8:13Speaker 9: she won one thousand dollars. And we also donated to
- 8:17Speaker 9: WU Tennis from Thunder the Mountains one thousand dollars. So
- 8:21Speaker 9: I'm a you know, I'm an equal opportunity when it
- 8:23Speaker 9: comes to my tennis players at both universities, but this
- 8:27Speaker 9: one's all about Marshall and really have one hundred over
- 8:33Speaker 9: one hundred players, which is really good, you know, you know,
- 8:37Speaker 9: not to be a pickleball tournament, which is you know,
- 8:40Speaker 9: all the rage. It is all the rage. I mean,
- 8:42Speaker 9: there's no question about its. Matter of fact, I'm thinking
- 8:44Speaker 9: about having a pickleball tournament to raise money for Thundering
- 8:47Speaker 9: the Mountain.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Johnny Rutherford, make it happen, man.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I'll tell yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 9: So anyway, the sponsors, because I like to talk about
- 8:58Speaker 9: the sponsors, and you always let me do that. So
- 9:01Speaker 9: obviously I'm the major sponsor, the Web Law Center, and
- 9:06Speaker 9: we're buying these really cool hoodies. This isn't gonna be
- 9:08Speaker 9: low brow t shirts. These are nice, dry fit hoodies
- 9:12Speaker 9: and they're not gonna be all tacked up. They're gonna
- 9:15Speaker 9: look really neat. Because I'm in charge. The Piro Simmons,
- 9:19Speaker 9: McGinley and Bastards has been a long time supporter of
- 9:23Speaker 9: this tournament, as has Hunter Insurance and Financial. I've gone
- 9:27Speaker 9: in and out, but they've stayed very very consistent. Graphic
- 9:31Speaker 9: Solutions is giving us a discount out of Huntington. They
- 9:36Speaker 9: have the Marshall logo. It's hard to find around here,
- 9:38Speaker 9: you know what I mean. And then Tammy and Casey Robinson,
- 9:41Speaker 9: who are dedicated alumni, and Martha Hill as she always
- 9:45Speaker 9: gives money to this story. In addition to their time
- 9:48Speaker 9: and efforts, they both are giving money and food and
- 9:52Speaker 9: all kinds of good stuff like that. So it's gonna
- 9:56Speaker 9: be big. I'm in it, but I'm gonna with thra
- 9:59Speaker 9: all today because I messed my back up about two
- 10:01Speaker 9: weeks ago in Greenboro County.
- 10:04Speaker 2: I think what happens when you turn what happens when
- 10:06Speaker 2: you turn thirty?
- 10:07Speaker 9: Rusting, I know, I thought I could pull this trailer
- 10:09Speaker 9: to my truck, and I was going downhill and that
- 10:11Speaker 9: trailer didn't want to stop, and I just I messed
- 10:14Speaker 9: my back up.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, the Injured Reserve now man.
- 10:16Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm an IR, but I'll be up there for
- 10:19Speaker 9: most of the festivities. But I'm gonna withdraw all today.
- 10:23Speaker 9: Just my back's killing men.
- 10:24Speaker 2: And I've got information posted about I'll get the flyer
- 10:26Speaker 2: posted on my social media. It's on Dave Island Radio.
- 10:29Speaker 2: You can check it out there on there. We'll get
- 10:31Speaker 2: back to determine in a moment. What else is going
- 10:33Speaker 2: on with Rusting Web. You always got exciting stuff to
- 10:35Speaker 2: tell us about. What else you doing?
- 10:37Speaker 9: I'll tell you what I'm really We're doing a lot

- 16:50Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. So I mentioned early voting
- 16:52Speaker 2: starting today in West Virginia, and if you live in
- 16:55Speaker 2: Putnam County, like a lot of our listeners do, when
- 16:57Speaker 2: you go to the polls, you're going to find an
- 17:00Speaker 2: education bond of sorts on the ballot. Now, stop me,
- 17:02Speaker 2: sir if I get any of this wrong. On the
- 17:04Speaker 2: ballot is a bond that specifically calls for a new
- 17:07Speaker 2: Hurricane Middle School and health and safety improvements for several
- 17:11Speaker 2: outdoor athletic facilities at several different schools in the county.
- 17:15Speaker 2: According to the wording of the School Building Authority, would
- 17:19Speaker 2: that would contribute twenty five million dollars towards the cost
- 17:22Speaker 2: of the middle school. That is half the total cost, contingent,
- 17:25Speaker 2: of course, on Putnam County voters passing the bond on
- 17:29Speaker 2: election day or leading up to election day with early voting.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Did I get that right?
- 17:33Speaker 7: Yes? Just Also, the School Building Authority would have to
- 17:38Speaker 7: approve the project once if the bond is passed.
- 17:43Speaker 2: All right, So I guess the dumb question here, because
- 17:45Speaker 2: I asked dumb questions better than anybody asked is why
- 17:50Speaker 2: is this needed?
- 17:51Speaker 7: Well, this is very much needed. One of the primary
- 17:55Speaker 7: things is a residents of Puttnam County, especially the Hurricane area.
- 18:00Speaker 7: For as far as Hurricane Middle School is, it was
- 18:03Speaker 7: actually built in nineteen fifty. It was it's overdue for replacement.
- 18:07Speaker 7: In two thousand and nine, the Board of Education here
- 18:10Speaker 7: ran a bond and at that time the bond built
- 18:14Speaker 7: new schools Buffalo High School, Winfield Middle School, Poka Elementary,
- 18:20Speaker 7: Pocal Middle and also Competence Elementary. As a result of
- 18:24Speaker 7: that bond. At that time, actually Hurricane Middle needed a
- 18:30Speaker 7: new building, but there just was that you couldn't ask
- 18:33Speaker 7: the taxpayers to take on another huge projects such as that.
- 18:37Speaker 7: So now this is an opportunity for that to get
- 18:40Speaker 7: completed with some of those other safety improvements all of
- 18:44Speaker 7: our other areas. But the big part of it is
- 18:48Speaker 7: is we have the potential to get twenty five million
- 18:51Speaker 7: in school building authority right at almost half the cost
- 18:54Speaker 7: of a new Hurricane Middle. So it is just very
- 18:57Speaker 7: much needed for spacing for our school the students. Also,
- 19:01Speaker 7: the proximity to Route thirty four. Just multiple reasons, but
- 19:05Speaker 7: now is a great opportunity for it to happen.
- 19:08Speaker 2: And Superintendent, how is what the voters are looking at
- 19:11Speaker 2: now different than let's say, and the excess levee because
- 19:16Speaker 2: you don't charged on out levees and bonds and things.
- 19:18Speaker 2: That kind of gets confused.
- 19:19Speaker 7: What's the difference it does? The excess levee was passed
- 19:23Speaker 7: back in May during the primary and those go to
- 19:28Speaker 7: instructional supplies, they go to support extra curricular curricular programs.
- 19:33Speaker 7: But this specifically a bond you kind of think of
- 19:37Speaker 7: B for bond, B for buildings. They are for building
- 19:41Speaker 7: and the facility improvements, and that money and that funding
- 19:44Speaker 7: cannot be used for anything else specifically for what is
- 19:48Speaker 7: in that bond call? And what is amazing with this
- 19:52Speaker 7: bond call because of our Board of Education taking really
- 19:56Speaker 7: a really good look at this, the bond call tax
- 20:00Speaker 7: right will be will not be an increase and as
- 20:03Speaker 7: a matter of fact, it will be a decrease over
- 20:06Speaker 7: the two thousand and nine bond And our board purposely
- 20:09Speaker 7: didn't want to tax the citizens anymore than they did
- 20:12Speaker 7: in two thousand and nine.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Talking again with Putnam County School Superintendent John Hudson, the
- 20:16Speaker 2: day Island showing five Any Life brought to you in
- 20:18Speaker 2: part by Pinnacle Consultants. Their services involved developing a comprehensive
- 20:22Speaker 2: management plans to outline strategies for controlling and minimizing as
- 20:25Speaker 2: business exposure. Perfect for commercial property owners and managers. Visa
- 20:29Speaker 2: Pinnacle Court dot net because what you don't know can
- 20:32Speaker 2: hurt you. The big question, Superintendent, everybody asked, no matter
- 20:35Speaker 2: the county, no matter the school system, is how will
- 20:38Speaker 2: it impact my taxes?
- 20:40Speaker 7: Well, the big part is if there will be no
- 20:46Speaker 7: tax rate increase, and a matter of fact, compared to
- 20:49Speaker 7: the two thousand and nine bond, there will be a
- 20:52Speaker 7: tax rate decrease. So I think that is really important
- 20:56Speaker 7: for the citizens of Puttnham County to know and under stand,
- 21:00Speaker 7: and especially with the other health and safety improvements, all
- 21:04Speaker 7: of our theater school areas and high school areas will
- 21:07Speaker 7: be impacted by this bond.
- 21:09Speaker 2: And let's come back to Hurricane Middle School for a moment.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Someone told me the other day and I don't know,
- 21:14Speaker 2: maybe you would know this. I don't. I didn't realize,
- 21:16Speaker 2: and I live in Hurricane. I didn't realize this is
- 21:18Speaker 2: it the largest middle school in the state or one
- 21:21Speaker 2: of the largest middle schools in the state.
- 21:23Speaker 7: You know, as far as enrollment. I would say it
- 21:27Speaker 7: is in one of the top largest middle schools in
- 21:30Speaker 7: the state. I can't say that is the largest. I
- 21:33Speaker 7: don't know that exactly either, but it is rather large
- 21:37Speaker 7: school in middle school with the three grades grade six
- 21:40Speaker 7: through eight.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And it would and as you said, it was built
- 21:42Speaker 2: in what nineteen fifty, is that what you said, Yes,
- 21:44Speaker 2: the current school.
- 21:45Speaker 7: I think it was Hurricane High at that time, but
- 21:48Speaker 7: it was nineteen fifty the original section.
- 21:51Speaker 2: And you know, schools just don't hold up. We're seeing
- 21:53Speaker 2: this in Kanawa County. I'm sure you've been following it
- 21:55Speaker 2: with the and I'll get if I get time, I'll
- 21:57Speaker 2: touch on a little bit later on. You're seeing in
- 21:59Speaker 2: the Kanaw County with the all these talks of consolidations,
- 22:01Speaker 2: building new schools and whatever. Schools then once they get
- 22:04Speaker 2: some age on them, Superintendent, there's just there's only so
- 22:06Speaker 2: many repairs that you can make to schools.
- 22:09Speaker 7: Well, that's right, and the repairs and we have a
- 22:12Speaker 7: good maintenance staff and we do well with those safety
- 22:15Speaker 7: requirements that are in place. But as you know, as
- 22:19Speaker 7: time changes, we need different spacing and with different type
- 22:22Speaker 7: of learning environments. If you look maybe at a science
- 22:26Speaker 7: lab and our current Hurricane Middle School. I can assure
- 22:28Speaker 7: you it would not be like what a science lab
- 22:31Speaker 7: would look like in a new a middle school. Some
- 22:34Speaker 7: of the spaces for our students as they need to work,
- 22:37Speaker 7: in collaborative teams as they need to work, and some
- 22:41Speaker 7: of those things that even now especially have our students
- 22:44Speaker 7: working a lot outside. And a part of the new
- 22:47Speaker 7: school concept includes an area outside classroom within the confines
- 22:53Speaker 7: of the school building itself.
- 22:55Speaker 2: And if there is, I know, I don't want to
- 22:58Speaker 2: get the car before the horse, because obviously voters would
- 23:00Speaker 2: have to pass this and then the SBA has to
- 23:02Speaker 2: get involved. But have we started talking about where if
- 23:06Speaker 2: a new Hurricane Middle School is built, where it might
- 23:08Speaker 2: be built or is that just a little premature.
- 23:11Speaker 7: No, no, it is not premature at all. Actually, the
- 23:14Speaker 7: board has been very thoughtful in that the land that
- 23:17Speaker 7: was purchased and paid for, I think back in twenty
- 23:21Speaker 7: nineteen the land was paid for. It is the land
- 23:25Speaker 7: directly adjacent to the current Hurricane High School. So it's
- 23:31Speaker 7: about twenty five twenty six acres, just a great spot
- 23:35Speaker 7: for the new Hurricane Middle School and has not has already.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Been paid And I will say this, you know, as
- 23:40Speaker 2: somebody who lives right in smack Dab. As we say,
- 23:43Speaker 2: in southern West Virginia in the middle of tays Valley,
- 23:46Speaker 2: traffic is an issue there. But as I always say, Superintendent,
- 23:49Speaker 2: there's areas of the state that would kill to have
- 23:51Speaker 2: a traffic problem. So I don't really complain about it.
- 23:53Speaker 2: I complained a little bit about sixty four. I don't
- 23:55Speaker 2: necessarily complain about Tayes Valley Road. But Putnam County is
- 23:59Speaker 2: in a unique place because you have a lot of people,
- 24:03Speaker 2: unlike you know, other parts of West Virginia. There's a
- 24:06Speaker 2: lot of people moving into Putnam County, and we saw
- 24:09Speaker 2: it in the nineties and it kind of ebbed a
- 24:11Speaker 2: little bit. Now it's come back again with New Core
- 24:14Speaker 2: and whatever. There's a whole lot of people that are
- 24:15Speaker 2: choosing to live in Putnam County right now.
- 24:18Speaker 7: That is correct, and we're seeing economically in our school
- 24:21Speaker 7: communities supporting our schools. But you mentioned new corps. Many
- 24:25Speaker 7: of the Newcore people that are already moving in have
- 24:28Speaker 7: have already said, hey, we know what school system we
- 24:30Speaker 7: want to attend, we know what area we want to live.
- 24:33Speaker 7: And as you noticed driving on sixty four, the new
- 24:37Speaker 7: Klode and Accent will open up sometime in the next
- 24:40Speaker 7: year or so, but there will be a traffic study
- 24:43Speaker 7: that is conducted with the Hurricane Middle School if the
- 24:46Speaker 7: project is approved, and there are dedicated bus slooping and
- 24:50Speaker 7: parent drop off, and the goal of that is to
- 24:53Speaker 7: reduce the traffic and get it off of Tays Valley Road.
- 24:58Speaker 7: And currently our bus is we have half of our
- 25:00Speaker 7: buses dropping off at Hurricane High and half at Hurricane
- 25:03Speaker 7: Middle and they're about a mile or two apart, as
- 25:05Speaker 7: you know, so then they have to switch, so it's
- 25:08Speaker 7: just double the traffic. So we truly believe it'll make
- 25:12Speaker 7: an impact on getting that traffic off of Tays Valley Road.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Before we let you go, I would do want to
- 25:18Speaker 2: mention there are links to all of what we talked
- 25:20Speaker 2: about on the Putnam Putnam County School's website and also
- 25:23Speaker 2: in the social media. I was doing some research on
- 25:25Speaker 2: this last night. Any final words, Superintendent for the voters
- 25:30Speaker 2: of Putnam County. As I said, early voting began today
- 25:34Speaker 2: Election Day, of course, November the fifth, Any final words
- 25:37Speaker 2: for the folks in Putnam County, just this is.
- 25:40Speaker 7: An opportunity for our citizens with the possibility of getting
- 25:43Speaker 7: half of the tow almost total or free money if
- 25:46Speaker 7: you will, from the school building Authority if this has
- 25:48Speaker 7: passed and the school authority approves, and it also provides
- 25:53Speaker 7: those health and safety improvements where each of our areas
- 25:56Speaker 7: in the Hurricane area, Winfield Area, PoCA Area, and Buffalo
- 25:59Speaker 7: are are getting upgrades as well, but no tax rate increase.
- 26:04Speaker 7: That's important for our people to know and understand.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Putnham County School Superintendent John Hudson, I appreciate you being here.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Good luck with everything. We'll talk again, Sue Man, thanks
- 26:12Speaker 2: a lot, all right, thank you, sir, Putnam County School
- 26:15Speaker 2: Superintendent John Hudson. Yeah, Early voting began today in West Virginia,

- 33:23Speaker 14: I just buy like five pairs at a time and
- 33:25Speaker 14: just up, here's one put and they're always on your
- 33:27Speaker 14: Head's that's the thing. So tell us who Andrew Anderson is.
- 33:30Speaker 14: Andrew Anderson is Knall County born and raised resident. My
- 33:36Speaker 14: wife is from here as well. She's a George Washington graduate.
- 33:39Speaker 14: I grew up in the Cross Lanes area, but lived
- 33:41Speaker 14: in Kennall County the vast majority of my life other
- 33:43Speaker 14: than traveling for work. I'm a father of four. I'm
- 33:46Speaker 14: an engineer by trade. I have been working in energy
- 33:48Speaker 14: and manufacturing for twenty some years now.
- 33:51Speaker 5: I don't even know.
- 33:51Speaker 2: It's gone so quick.
- 33:52Speaker 5: I don't even know how long it's been.
- 33:54Speaker 14: But and I'm a candidate for House fifty six district,
- 33:56Speaker 14: and I'm excited to meet everyone in the district and
- 33:59Speaker 14: get out and work hard. We've been working really hard.
- 34:01Speaker 14: We've been knocking doors, and I.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Mean you and I We're talking to everybody. How many
- 34:04Speaker 2: doors have you knocked?
- 34:05Speaker 14: By sundown tonight, it'll be over fifteen hundred. I don't
- 34:08Speaker 14: know the exact number, but by sundown tonight we'll have
- 34:10Speaker 14: fifteen hundred doors knocked. We've met a lot of people.
- 34:13Speaker 14: The response is absolutely positive for this campaign, and people
- 34:16Speaker 14: are excited. People have a lot of issues that they're
- 34:19Speaker 14: concerned about here in Kanall County. Number one is jobs
- 34:21Speaker 14: for our family. People are sick of our kids leaving
- 34:24Speaker 14: our communities and moving to Charlotte and to Columbus. And
- 34:26Speaker 14: I have I as a father of four, I got
- 34:28Speaker 14: an eight year old, a six year old and twins
- 34:29Speaker 14: that just turned four. I look at it, what do
- 34:32Speaker 14: you have time to knock on doors? Thank God for
- 34:34Speaker 14: my wife and my mother in law and my mom
- 34:38Speaker 14: so we hear about jobs so our kids don't leave.
- 34:41Speaker 14: We want people want safe communities. People want to see
- 34:45Speaker 14: access to childcare for working families. And those are the
- 34:48Speaker 14: key issues that we're talking about with the community. And
- 34:51Speaker 14: I think we can work hard to get things done
- 34:53Speaker 14: on those issues. As the legislator.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Talk at again with Andrew Anderson. Now this is District
- 34:58Speaker 2: fifty six, Okay, after the that's right to get the
- 35:00Speaker 2: number right, rights correct for the But now you'd served before.
- 35:03Speaker 14: I was appointed to the thirty fifth by the governor
- 35:06Speaker 14: in twenty twenty two. I served for ninety days one
- 35:10Speaker 14: hundred days or so when we were appointed, we had
- 35:13Speaker 14: seventy nine days until the election. And when I was appointed,
- 35:17Speaker 14: we had no website, no money, no organization, not even
- 35:20Speaker 14: a current family picture. So we were really behind the
- 35:23Speaker 14: eight ball. And we did our best at the seventy
- 35:25Speaker 14: nine days and lost by fifty eight votes. And we
- 35:29Speaker 14: are ahead of the game this time, way more prepared,
- 35:31Speaker 14: and I feel like we're going to get across the
- 35:32Speaker 14: finish line.
- 35:33Speaker 2: What did you learn when during your first term there? Again,
- 35:36Speaker 2: you were kind of, I don't want to say thrown
- 35:37Speaker 2: into it, but you were appointed to the position and
- 35:39Speaker 2: so you didn't have a whole lot of time to
- 35:40Speaker 2: prepare for it. But what were some of the surprises
- 35:44Speaker 2: that you had there? Were there anything that really surprised
- 35:47Speaker 2: you when you got there?
- 35:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:48Speaker 14: One of the key reasons that I'm running is something
- 35:51Speaker 14: that I learned, and that is to get things done
- 35:53Speaker 14: in the legislature, you have to have relationships with leadership,
- 35:57Speaker 14: and you have to be in the conversations that matter.
- 36:00Speaker 14: Experience matters, and having the relationships matter, And that is
- 36:03Speaker 14: the primary reason I'm running, because having a relationship and
- 36:07Speaker 14: the experience to get things done for families is what
- 36:09Speaker 14: really matters talk and a lot of Facebook posts and
- 36:14Speaker 14: Instagram posts do not accomplish things for voters. We gets
- 36:16Speaker 14: things done are having relationships and experience that can push
- 36:19Speaker 14: things across the finish line.
- 36:21Speaker 2: And you've talked about some of the needs of the
- 36:24Speaker 2: district and number one, keeping people here. You know, at
- 36:27Speaker 2: certain areas of the states seem to be growing others
- 36:29Speaker 2: or stagnant others or not. Obviously, and of course when
- 36:32Speaker 2: you're serving of a legislature, your number one priority is
- 36:35Speaker 2: to your constituents, but you're also making decisions where the
- 36:37Speaker 2: entire state of West Virginia, and I know that's something
- 36:40Speaker 2: that you have to study. What are some of the
- 36:43Speaker 2: things if you are elected that you really really say,
- 36:46Speaker 2: I am going to go after this or I want
- 36:49Speaker 2: to work on this. What would this be?
- 36:50Speaker 14: Creating an environment where capital investment comes to Kanall County
- 36:53Speaker 14: so we have good opportunities for our kids, for everyone.
- 36:57Speaker 2: But I look at it.
- 36:58Speaker 14: It's personal with me because I look at a he's
- 37:00Speaker 14: got fifteen sixteen years before my kids are looking for jobs,
- 37:02Speaker 14: and I want there to be opportunity here for them.
- 37:05Speaker 14: Second is clean, safe communities. That's a huge issue. I
- 37:09Speaker 14: mean to talk about policy that would take us two
- 37:12Speaker 14: hours to what impacts clean and safe communities, but that
- 37:14Speaker 14: is a priority. And then fixing the childcare system. You know,
- 37:18Speaker 14: the Chamber of Commerce's priority says one of their key
- 37:21Speaker 14: priorities is having access to affordable childcare for people to
- 37:25Speaker 14: go to work, for working class families in West Virginia.
- 37:28Speaker 14: And that's something that we absolutely will address and that
- 37:30Speaker 14: I will drive across the finish line.
- 37:33Speaker 5: Again.
- 37:33Speaker 2: We're talking with Andrew Anderson, who's a candidate for a
- 37:35Speaker 2: house in District fifty six on the Republican ticket. The
- 37:37Speaker 2: Dave Allan Show on five any Live brought to you
- 37:39Speaker 2: in part by Meek's Realty Group. Rich Surrealtor always happy
- 37:42Speaker 2: to take your call. He's got a great listing in
- 37:44Speaker 2: Scott Depots seventy five point Zetia Drive in Scott Depot,
- 37:47Speaker 2: fifty six hundred square foot home. It's got six bedrooms,
- 37:51Speaker 2: all kinds of cool amenities and a whole house generator.
- 37:55Speaker 2: More caller, Text my good friend Rich the realtor three
- 37:57Speaker 2: zero four nine three two seventy four eighty eight three
- 38:00Speaker 2: four two nine three two seventy four eighty eight. Let
- 38:02Speaker 2: him tell you more about this property, of course, you
- 38:05Speaker 2: being a Republican. The Republicans have got the super majority
- 38:09Speaker 2: in West Virginia, something that would have been unheard of,
- 38:12Speaker 2: you know, years and years ago, and Democrats controlled it
- 38:14Speaker 2: for a long time. The Republicans are in charge now.
- 38:16Speaker 2: You got a little taste of it when you were
- 38:18Speaker 2: appointed there, and you're hoping to go back again. Any
- 38:21Speaker 2: concerns about splits in the party, because I know it
- 38:24Speaker 2: happened with the Democrats that we've seen, you know, a
- 38:27Speaker 2: couple here. Any concerns about anything like that, Yeah, that's.
- 38:29Speaker 14: Just part of the game when you have a majority
- 38:32Speaker 14: like that. And I think it's important that as Republicans
- 38:35Speaker 14: we look to elect good Republicans with real life experience
- 38:38Speaker 14: that have common sense conservative values. And I think I
- 38:41Speaker 14: represent that part of the party and I think that
- 38:44Speaker 14: is in line with what the values of the fifty
- 38:47Speaker 14: six district here Kandall County. It's just right in the
- 38:49Speaker 14: line with those values. And so that's kind of the
- 38:51Speaker 14: reason I'm running. I mean, at the end of the day,
- 38:53Speaker 14: the Republican parties are going to make the decision on policy,
- 38:56Speaker 14: They're going to make decision on priorities, and I want
- 38:58Speaker 14: to be in that conversation to help Kennall County.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Give me the final thirty. What makes you the better
- 39:02Speaker 2: candidate for this race.
- 39:04Speaker 14: I have decades of experience working in manufacturing, energy, and
- 39:08Speaker 14: real estate, solving big world, big problems, and I want
- 39:13Speaker 14: to take that experience to the legislature to work for
- 39:15Speaker 14: Kannak County families and solve the issues that matter to them,
- 39:19Speaker 14: get things across the finish line in regards to job creation,
- 39:22Speaker 14: in regards to clean and safe communities, and in regards
- 39:25Speaker 14: to fixing the childcare problem that we have with access
- 39:28Speaker 14: to childcare for working families and the and the foster
- 39:31Speaker 14: care system as well. I think those are all proporities,
- 39:33Speaker 14: and I think I've got the experience and the relationships
- 39:35Speaker 14: to get things done for Knall County.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Have a Facebook or website that you'd like to, yeah, Weather.
- 39:40Speaker 14: The website is Anderson for wv dot com and the
- 39:44Speaker 14: Facebook is Andrew Anderson for West Virginia and they're both
- 39:48Speaker 14: accessible easily.
- 39:49Speaker 2: All right, we wish you the best of luck.

- 43:59Speaker 8: Good morning, It's always good to be with you, Dave.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Polls are open for early voting. Let me just say
- 44:04Speaker 2: that here in Kanawha County, you can early vote at
- 44:05Speaker 2: the Voter Registration building on Courrier Street, plus the Sheriff's
- 44:08Speaker 2: Attachment across Lanes, the Belltown Hall, City Hall in Saint Albans,
- 44:12Speaker 2: the Sistaninville Library, the lu Community Center, Marmette Town Hall,

- 44:21Speaker 2: Kanawha County Monday through Friday and the next two Saturdays
- 44:23Speaker 2: nine to five. It's really easy to early vote. Secretary
- 44:27Speaker 2: it Suriots.
- 44:27Speaker 8: I'm glad you're talking about this. As you mentioned, the
- 44:30Speaker 8: voting is going on as we speak. We talked with
- 44:32Speaker 8: both the Canawla and Putnam County. They say the early
- 44:35Speaker 8: voting is brisk, so there's no reason not to vote.
- 44:38Speaker 8: We've made it easier than ever in West Virginia to vote,
- 44:41Speaker 8: so you can vote early in person. As you mentioned,
- 44:43Speaker 8: you can vote absentee if you have that a good reason,
- 44:47Speaker 8: and then of course on election day. That's the most
- 44:49Speaker 8: secure form of voting is on election day, which is
- 44:51Speaker 8: two weeks from yesterday, November fifth, So exercise you're right
- 44:55Speaker 8: to participate in this democracy and it's game time.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Hoppy did it an informal poll on Twitter asking people
- 45:02Speaker 2: about how they vote, whether or not who they vote for,
- 45:06Speaker 2: but to whether they choose to do early voting or
- 45:09Speaker 2: in person voting absentee. The majority of people and I
- 45:11Speaker 2: don't know what your numbers say, Secretary, but in this
- 45:13Speaker 2: informal poll that Hobby did on x you Artist formally
- 45:16Speaker 2: known as Twitter yesterday, it's said that most people plan
- 45:18Speaker 2: on doing early voting.
- 45:21Speaker 8: Well, the past has shown maybe a third of the
- 45:24Speaker 8: people vote early or by absentee. But I can tell
- 45:26Speaker 8: you that the numbers are looking strong. We've had over
- 45:29Speaker 8: eleven thousand absent t ballots already come back in across
- 45:32Speaker 8: the state, and I'd say that's probably higher than usual.
- 45:36Speaker 8: This indication that the early voting is going strong also
- 45:39Speaker 8: shows for potential for a good turnout, So it really
- 45:43Speaker 8: doesn't matter which way you decide to vote. I think
- 45:45Speaker 8: our legislature has done a wonderful job in giving us
- 45:47Speaker 8: the options. But yet with parameters security, you just don't
- 45:51Speaker 8: mail out ballots and you just don't have no excuse
- 45:53Speaker 8: early voting or no excuse have some ty ballots. You
- 45:57Speaker 8: have to have a reason. So they've struck that good
- 46:00Speaker 8: balance between security and integrity in the process, yet making
- 46:04Speaker 8: it easy for people to vote.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and I will point out that was just a
- 46:07Speaker 2: very informal poll that Hoppy dead on Twitter on acts.
- 46:09Speaker 2: It was just something he just you know, sort of
- 46:11Speaker 2: a very It's not scientific at all, but a lot
- 46:13Speaker 2: of people do choose to do the early voting. How's
- 46:17Speaker 2: how's the search for poll workers going?
- 46:21Speaker 8: Things went great all across the state. There was one
- 46:24Speaker 8: county up until here a couple of days ago. I
- 46:25Speaker 8: think it was Wetzel that still was looking for some
- 46:28Speaker 8: poll workers. But as the clerks always do and the parties,
- 46:32Speaker 8: they pull it out at the last minute get the
- 46:35Speaker 8: numbers there that we need. I haven't heard of any
- 46:37Speaker 8: complaints yet around the state, but not having enough, so
- 46:41Speaker 8: things went well. I appreciate you all getting the word
- 46:43Speaker 8: out to help us encourage people to participate as poll workers.
- 46:46Speaker 2: And always remember in West Virginia, voter ID is the law,
- 46:49Speaker 2: So take your ID with you. There are what sixteen
- 46:51Speaker 2: different forms of IDA you can use.
- 46:54Speaker 8: Yeah, as you mentioned it, two things one people think
- 46:56Speaker 8: about as they head the polls is one, don't wear
- 46:58Speaker 8: campaign material. Don't wear or something it's pro one candidate
- 47:02Speaker 8: or party versus another. And then the others have that
- 47:05Speaker 8: ide ready. And that's never been a problem here in
- 47:07Speaker 8: West Virginia. I think people expect to show their ID,
- 47:09Speaker 8: but if you just have that ready, then it keeps
- 47:11Speaker 8: the lines moving along, keeps people flowing through the precincts
- 47:16Speaker 8: or the early voting stations easily. So those two things,
- 47:20Speaker 8: don't wear campaign material, have your idea ready.
- 47:22Speaker 2: And yeah, that's very that's a very important point. I mean,
- 47:25Speaker 2: you know, everybody supports their candidates local or on the
- 47:28Speaker 2: national level, but it's not a free speech issue. It's
- 47:30Speaker 2: it's considered electioneering. And you walk into the polling place,
- 47:34Speaker 2: whether Trump or Biden or Harris or whatever, you're going
- 47:37Speaker 2: to be asked to at least turn it inside out,
- 47:39Speaker 2: to put a jacket on or something, because you simply
- 47:42Speaker 2: can't do that. I do want to. I did get
- 47:43Speaker 2: a text here about early voting in Putnam County, as
- 47:47Speaker 2: is generally the case there, you can do early voting
- 47:49Speaker 2: and Putnam County at the Valley Park Conference Center and
- 47:52Speaker 2: also at the Putnam County Courthouse. What if people are
- 47:56Speaker 2: out either doing early voting, Secretary, or they're out on
- 47:59Speaker 2: election day and they see something that just doesn't look right.
- 48:02Speaker 2: You know, this person is violating the one hundred foot rule,
- 48:06Speaker 2: or this person is doing this, or they're in trying
- 48:07Speaker 2: to intimidate voters. What do people need to do?
- 48:11Speaker 8: The thing that we've instituted here in West Virginia is
- 48:14Speaker 8: called see Something Text Something, And so everybody that has
- 48:17Speaker 8: a cell phone can take a picture or a video
- 48:20Speaker 8: and send that to our chief investigator, that's Kim Mason,
- 48:23Speaker 8: and she will send that out to one of our
- 48:25Speaker 8: investigators right away. If we can have somebody at any
- 48:27Speaker 8: precinct in in West Virginia pretty much within about an
- 48:30Speaker 8: hour and either stop the wrongdoing or investigate the wrongdoing.
- 48:36Speaker 8: So please make use of that. It's called see something,
- 48:39Speaker 8: Text Something. Just get on our website, go vote wv
- 48:43Speaker 8: dot com. You'll have the information there. It's a very
- 48:45Speaker 8: easy form to fill out. And what the purpose of
- 48:48Speaker 8: that is is really to deter things from happening. If
- 48:51Speaker 8: everyone knows that anyone with a cell phone can report
- 48:55Speaker 8: an infraction, we're less like to have the shenanigans going
- 48:59Speaker 8: on that we used to see in West Virginia. But
- 49:01Speaker 8: really a lot of that has cleaned up dates. I
- 49:03Speaker 8: think West Virginia has gotten a national reputation for clean
- 49:06Speaker 8: elections now integrity, and we shall be proud of that.
- 49:10Speaker 8: The voters themselves for turning up and participating, the clerks
- 49:13Speaker 8: for doing their job, the poll workers. I think we're
- 49:15Speaker 8: firing on all cylinders here in West Virginia. Everybody should
- 49:18Speaker 8: be proud of that.
- 49:19Speaker 2: All right, Secretary of State, make Warner, I appreciate you
- 49:21Speaker 2: being here. Have a great election ten day, ten days
- 49:25Speaker 2: of early voting, and of course on election day, I

- 50:00Speaker 2: I will say this about the folks at Generations. You've
- 50:04Speaker 2: heard heard me talking about them. In June, I started,
- 50:08Speaker 2: you know, I'm a guy that's hardly ever sick and
- 50:11Speaker 2: very very rarely luckily have any health issues of any
- 50:13Speaker 2: cat never broken any bones. You have to get off
- 50:16Speaker 2: the couch, I guess to break bones, right. And in
- 50:19Speaker 2: June I started feeling a numbness completely from my elbow down.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Couldn't diagnose it. A couple of different tests run, they
- 50:25Speaker 2: couldn't figure out exactly what the problem is. I made
- 50:28Speaker 2: an appointment on my own with the folks in Generations
- 50:31Speaker 2: to PT. They got locations throughout the tri state. I
- 50:34Speaker 2: chose to go to the one in Winfield. I started
- 50:35Speaker 2: physical therapy. I'm doing it three times a week now
- 50:39Speaker 2: and it's it's been miraculous. I mean, it really really happens.
- 50:43Speaker 2: Still not there yet, if you somebody pointed out the
- 50:45Speaker 2: other day they said, saw a picture of you online
- 50:47Speaker 2: and you were leaning sideways. Yeah, that's that's part of it.
- 50:51Speaker 2: It's it's called it's like a form of spinal stenosis.
- 50:53Speaker 2: It's not life threatening. Unfortunately I can't get a check
- 50:56Speaker 2: for it or anything like that. Uh, but just kind
- 50:59Speaker 2: of happens over the years, you know, carrying around probably
- 51:03Speaker 2: too much weight around the middle and slumping and having
- 51:05Speaker 2: poor posture and driving too much and typing too much
- 51:08Speaker 2: and things of that nature. But I'm on the road
- 51:11Speaker 2: to recovery. And that's a lot of that is because
- 51:13Speaker 2: of the folks and generations. So I want to give
- 51:15Speaker 2: them a big shout out. This morning. Text says easy
- 51:18Speaker 2: in and out at the Girl Scouts voting location on
- 51:21Speaker 2: the West Side. About eight voters there just now. That
- 51:24Speaker 2: came in about ten minutes or so ago. So that's
- 51:27Speaker 2: one of the locations in Kanawah County over on the
- 51:29Speaker 2: west side. It's the Girl Scouts Center. You can early
- 51:31Speaker 2: vote there, and I mentioned all of the others places
- 51:33Speaker 2: that you can early vote. I've got information posted about
- 51:36Speaker 2: on my social media. If you're in Kanawah County, get
- 51:38Speaker 2: out there and vote. Some people choose to do early voting.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Some people like it an election day regardless, get out
- 51:44Speaker 2: there and vote Texas. What happens if the SBA doesn't
- 51:48Speaker 2: supply funding. Can the communities fight to save their schools?
- 51:51Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know. I can get into that.
- 51:53Speaker 2: I can probably try to have somebody from the board
- 51:56Speaker 2: or the superintendent's office, Canawh County on the show. I'm
- 51:59Speaker 2: going to say it's not gonna happen. I mean, I
- 52:01Speaker 2: think pretty much a done deal at this point, but
- 52:03Speaker 2: I could be wrong. I'll look into that. My producer
- 52:06Speaker 2: was Mac Guitar Murph you thank you so much. Coming up,
- 52:09Speaker 2: tomorrow's tricker Beats Day, Woody Woods from The Beat will

- 52:16Speaker 2: check in with Rob Reel live on the road from
- 52:19Speaker 2: my sister station KWS raising money Charleston Morgantown for WVU
