- 0:20It was an honor.
- 0:21I had so much fun.

- 0:23for the Revolution of Purpose solo show
- 0:25and every Thursday for Revolution of Purpose Conversations.
- 0:30Welcome back to the Revolution of Purpose podcast.
- 0:33I'm Jon Street, mindset coach, speaker,
- 0:35author of Revolution of Purpose,
- 0:37and someone who is passionate
- 0:38about helping people identify their purpose,
- 0:41ignite their transformation, and implement their vision.
- 0:45Today, I want to share with you something
- 0:47that I think is very exciting.
- 0:49It is a new principle that I've discovered
- 0:51that will help you get unstuck
- 0:53and move forward with consistency.
- 0:57And I'm calling this the momentum spiral,
- 1:00the missing piece of be, do, have.
- 1:04I talked about this a little bit on the last solo show,
- 1:06but I've really been digging down deep into this
- 1:09over this last week.
- 1:10And I've realized, even though I've taught the concepts
- 1:14of be, do, have for years,
- 1:16there are so many people that I know that get stuck in this
- 1:20and they get stuck in that becoming.
- 1:22They get stuck in the initial part of be, do, have.
- 1:26So if you're not familiar with the concept,
- 1:28it's very, very famous in personal development work.
- 1:32But be, do, have says that first you become the person
- 1:37that is your goal-achieved self,
- 1:38and then you will naturally start to do the things
- 1:40that that person does,
- 1:41and then you'll have the things that that person has.
- 1:45It's taught on like a linear be, then do, then have.
- 1:51And in fact, if you've listened to this podcast
- 1:53for any length of time,
- 1:54you've heard me say that who you are determines what you do
- 1:59and what you do determines what you have.
- 2:02And that is absolutely true.
- 2:03I absolutely believe that.
- 2:05But the more I study this, the more I'm learning
- 2:08that there are a lot of different teachers out there.
- 2:10Some who are identifying identity as the major key
- 2:15to change.
- 2:16Some identify mindset, thinking your way there.
- 2:20Some emphasize action and how important action is.
- 2:25Some teachers are out there emphasizing self-image
- 2:27and how that self-image is the thing
- 2:29that's gonna change your life.
- 2:30There are other teachers out there emphasizing faith
- 2:33and some emphasizing habits.
- 2:34Some are out there saying,
- 2:36just think your way to a new self.
- 2:38And some are out there saying, no, just do it.
- 2:39You've got to start doing the things.
- 2:42And what I'm realizing is all of these different voices
- 2:46are not actually disagreeing with one another.
- 2:49They're just describing different parts
- 2:52of the same process.
- 2:54What if be, do, have is not some straight line?
- 2:59What if it is not some linear time thing
- 3:01that we're looking at?
- 3:02What if be, do, have is part of a spiral?
- 3:07What if identity, action, and results
- 3:11are constantly creating identity, action, and results?
- 3:16And what if understanding that could explain
- 3:18why some people transform their lives
- 3:22while others stay stuck for years?
- 3:25Today, I wanna share with you what I am calling
- 3:28the principle of directional momentum.
- 3:31And the model that illustrates it is the momentum spiral.
- 3:35Let's dive in.
- 3:37One of the biggest traps that we see
- 3:40in personal development is waiting.
- 3:42People want to wait until we feel ready.
- 3:46Wait until we're thinking like we're ready.
- 3:50Wait until we feel confident.
- 3:52Wait until we think confident.
- 3:54Wait until we feel like the person that is doing the thing.
- 3:58And we've all done that.
- 3:59We do this in different areas of our life,
- 4:01whether we realize it or not.
- 4:02I'll start the business when I feel like an entrepreneur.
- 4:05I'll write the book when I feel like a writer.
- 4:08I'll get healthy when I feel like a healthy person.
- 4:12The problem is that many identities
- 4:15are formed through action.
- 4:18Not before action, but after action.
- 4:22Let me break this down with a pretty simple example.
- 4:24Let's talk about learning to swim.
- 4:27You don't become a swimmer by reading books
- 4:29about learning to swim.
- 4:31You don't become a swimmer
- 4:32by watching YouTube videos about swimming.
- 4:35You don't even become a swimmer
- 4:37by saying affirmations that you are a swimmer.
- 4:40Now, at some point, you get in the water.
- 4:44At some point, either someone teaches you lessons
- 4:46or you start getting in there
- 4:49and moving your arms and moving your legs.
- 4:51And when you get in the water,
- 4:53you start to gather evidence.
- 4:55You start to float.
- 4:57You start to kick.
- 4:59You start to move forward.
- 5:01And eventually, your mind says,
- 5:04okay, okay, maybe I'm becoming a swimmer.
- 5:08The identity of becoming a swimmer
- 5:10is following the evidence of your action.
- 5:14We cannot just think our way to our new identity.
- 5:17We can't just feel our way to our new identity.
- 5:20As I said in the last solo show,
- 5:23being of be, do, have is an action verb.
- 5:26And there's even more to that.
- 5:27There has to be a do before you get to the be.
- 5:30There has to be action
- 5:32that helps you get to that new becoming,
- 5:35to that new identity.
- 5:37This reminds me of something
- 5:39that James Clear teaches in Atomic Habits.
- 5:41Really wonderful book.
- 5:43And in that book, he says,
- 5:44every action you take is a vote
- 5:46for the type of person you wish to become.
- 5:49Think about that.
- 5:51He's not saying every thought,
- 5:53but every action is a vote.
- 5:57One action does not create identity,
- 6:00but repeated actions create evidence.
- 6:04And that evidence creates belief,
- 6:06and that belief creates identity.
- 6:09James Clear is describing a key component
- 6:13of this momentum spiral,
- 6:15that action influences your identity.
- 6:19You can't just think about becoming a swimmer.
- 6:23You can't just meditate about becoming a swimmer.
- 6:26I love meditation.
- 6:27I love visualization.
- 6:28It is absolutely huge,
- 6:30but it is just an additional component to that becoming.
- 6:34If you don't take any action along with it,
- 6:38then all you're gonna be is someone
- 6:39that wishes they could be a swimmer.
- 6:42You have to get in the water.
- 6:44Now let's talk about a different group
- 6:46of teachers out there.
- 6:47These are the action-oriented crowd.
- 6:50These are the athletes, the coaches,
- 6:52the Navy SEALs, the just do it people.
- 6:56These are the people like Mel Robbins,
- 6:59or people like many of the elite athletic coaches,
- 7:02people who say, take that first step.
- 7:06Just do it.
- 7:07Just start before you're ready.
- 7:10Action creates clarity.
- 7:13And for years, I thought that this sounded different
- 7:15from the identity-based teachings,
- 7:17but now I think they're describing another part
- 7:20of the same spiral.
- 7:22The Jim Rohns of the world who are out there saying,
- 7:24get up every morning at 5 a.m. and win your day.
- 7:28These are important teachings.
- 7:29These are teachings that absolutely, you know,
- 7:32inspire me to want to get up early and win my day.
- 7:36But they're not different than the mindset teachings
- 7:39of Bob Proctors and others who say,
- 7:40well, no, first you've got to envision your day.
- 7:43They're just saying a different part of the same spiral
- 7:46because action really does create clarity.
- 7:49Action creates evidence.
- 7:52Action creates feedback.
- 7:54Action creates learning.
- 7:56Action creates confidence.
- 7:58It's not the other way around.
- 8:00You don't become confident and then act.
- 8:03Often you act and then you get the confidence.
- 8:08The confidence follows your action.
- 8:11Think about leadership for that matter.
- 8:13John Maxwell often says that leadership
- 8:16is something that's developed, that's not granted.
- 8:19Nobody wakes up one day and they feel like a leader,
- 8:23but they begin leading.
- 8:25They make mistakes.
- 8:27They learn from their mistakes.
- 8:29They influence people and eventually
- 8:32they develop that leadership identity.
- 8:35Action precedes identity.
- 8:38The identity strengthens future action
- 8:41and the spiral just continues and continues and continues.
- 8:44And you may say, well, John,
- 8:46when we're talking about action,
- 8:47what about the times that things don't go well?
- 8:50Or what about the times when things mess up?
- 8:53That's all part of the spiral.
- 8:55That's all part of the universe
- 8:57making you become the person you want to be.
- 9:00By taking action and then failing miserably,
- 9:04you're learning and then you get up
- 9:06and realize I never failed because you never fail.
- 9:09Everything is happening for you.
- 9:11Nothing's happening to you.
- 9:13And so you're going through this spiral of momentum again
- 9:16and you get to control which way the spiral goes.
- 9:20You're always in this momentum spiral.
- 9:22So if you take an action and it doesn't go well,
- 9:25and then all of a sudden you start saying,
- 9:27well, then I'm not that person.
- 9:28I'm not the person that can do this.
- 9:30I can't do this.
- 9:31What was I thinking?
- 9:32And you get into fear,
- 9:33then you're still in a momentum spiral.
- 9:35It's just, you're spiraling out of control.
- 9:37You're spiraling into depression.
- 9:38You're spiraling to guilt and into shame.
- 9:40But if you take that setback and you say,
- 9:43yeah, it knocked me down and that was horrible,
- 9:46but it's like that Chamba Wamba song.
- 9:48I get knocked down, but I get up again.
- 9:50You're never gonna keep me down.
- 9:52Then that momentum continues to build.
- 9:54What can I learn from this and how can I move forward?
- 9:57And that's how this momentum spiral continues
- 10:00to work for you and getting you to your goal achieved life
- 10:04instead of working against you.
- 10:06And so here's where Maxwell Maltz enters the conversation.
- 10:11Because I wanna talk to you a little bit
- 10:12about image and the feedback loop.
- 10:15In Psycho-Cybernetics, Maltz taught
- 10:18that people act in accordance with their self-image.
- 10:21And I believe he was absolutely right too.
- 10:24Because where does self-image come from?
- 10:27It comes from our experience.
- 10:28It comes from our evidence.
- 10:30It comes from our perception, our interpretation,
- 10:34our action, our results.
- 10:37A person who repeatedly experiences success
- 10:41begins seeing themselves differently.
- 10:43A person who repeatedly experiences failure often does too.
- 10:48A self-image that influences future behavior
- 10:52is based on how you're seeing yourself.
- 10:54It's the behavior that creates more results.
- 10:57The results reinforce that self-image.
- 11:00And this really brings me to the principle
- 11:03of directional momentum itself.
- 11:05Every thought, every action, every identity,
- 11:10and every result contributes momentum
- 11:13toward a future outcome.
- 11:15The key word here is direction
- 11:18because the spiral is always running, always.
- 11:23The question is never, am I in a momentum spiral?
- 11:27The question is what direction
- 11:29is this momentum spiral moving?
- 11:32Is this moving toward abundance
- 11:34or is it moving toward scarcity?
- 11:37Is it moving toward purpose or is it moving toward apathy?
- 11:42Is it moving toward physical health
- 11:44or is it moving toward physical disease?
- 11:47Is it moving toward connection or toward isolation?
- 11:50Toward your dream life or is it moving away from it?
- 11:55The spiral doesn't care.
- 11:57It simply amplifies the direction
- 12:00that you're pointing it in.
- 12:02And you know, this really explains something
- 12:03that I've noticed for years.
- 12:05Please pardon me while I interrupt your podcast
- 12:07with a word from your sponsor, me.

- 13:13And now let's get back to this podcast.
- 13:16Success compounds, but so does discouragement.
- 13:21One small healthy choice leads to another.
- 13:24One workout leads to another.
- 13:27One pound loss leads to another.
- 13:31One encouraging result creates another action.
- 13:35And suddenly someone is living a completely different life.
- 13:39One small step toward a business
- 13:42you've always wanted to do leads to a success.
- 13:45One small step toward repairing a relationship.
- 13:50Seeing a counselor, helping your marriage
- 13:52leads to one other thing, one other thing.
- 13:55And before you know it,
- 13:56you're leading a different life of encouragement
- 14:00that's taking you toward the area
- 14:02that you want to go in life.
- 14:04But then the opposite can happen too.
- 14:07One disappointment becomes a story.
- 14:10One story becomes a belief.
- 14:12And then that belief becomes your identity.
- 14:15And then that identity creates more disappointing actions.
- 14:20And then the spiral begins moving downward.
- 14:24It's the same principle.
- 14:27It's the same momentum spiral.
- 14:29It's just going in a different direction.
- 14:31We get to harness the direction this is moving in.
- 14:35You know, one teacher who has influenced me deeply
- 14:38is Neville Goddard.
- 14:40Neville taught that we must occupy the state
- 14:42of the wish fulfilled.
- 14:44Many people interpret this as merely thinking differently,
- 14:48but the deeper invitation is to begin living
- 14:51from that state.
- 14:53Act from it.
- 14:54Choose from it.
- 14:56Move from it.
- 14:58And every action taken from that state
- 15:00strengthens the state.
- 15:03And here again, we see this spiral.
- 15:06Identity influencing action.
- 15:09Action reinforcing identity.
- 15:13And so it continues.
- 15:15So after years of teaching Be, Do, Have,
- 15:19here's what I've come to believe.
- 15:22The Be, Do, Have principle is not wrong.
- 15:25And those who teach it are spot on.
- 15:28The action-oriented speakers of the world are not wrong.
- 15:32They are absolutely spot on.
- 15:35The self-image teachers in the world are not wrong.
- 15:38The leadership teachers in the world are not wrong.
- 15:40The habit experts are not wrong.
- 15:43They are all correct.
- 15:45But they are all describing a different aspect
- 15:47of a larger process.
- 15:49And that process that I call the momentum spiral.
- 15:53You don't think your way into a new identity.
- 15:58You act your way into a new identity.
- 16:01And then that identity begins acting through you.
- 16:04For me personally, this certainly happened
- 16:06in my weight loss journey.
- 16:08When I was 350 pounds, I didn't just sit there
- 16:12and meditate about how I would look at 230 pounds.
- 16:16I first had to believe that I could do it.
- 16:19So I took a walk and then I took another walk
- 16:22and then I took another walk
- 16:23and then I started going to a gym
- 16:24and then I hired a trainer.
- 16:26And each result that I saw, each pound that I lost,
- 16:30each time I showed up for myself,
- 16:32I created more evidence that I could be
- 16:35the person I wanted to be.
- 16:37And that caused me to do more aligned actions.
- 16:41And then I started to have the results,
- 16:43which led me back into the spiral to do more things
- 16:46that made me feel like the person I was going to be.
- 16:49Instead of be, do, have, I was in the cycle
- 16:53of doing the things that led to the identity.
- 16:56And the identity caused me to do aligned actions,
- 16:59which led to the results,
- 17:00which caused me to do more things
- 17:01that reinforced the identity.
- 17:03And before you knew it, I'd lost 120 pounds.
- 17:07The first action creates the direction.
- 17:11And then the repeated action creates the momentum.
- 17:14And the momentum determines where the spiral leads.
- 17:18The question is not whether you're in the spiral.
- 17:21You are always in a momentum spiral.
- 17:23The question is, what direction is it moving?
- 17:27Is it getting you toward your goal achieved life?
- 17:30Or is it taking you back into old patterns,
- 17:32old loops, old paradigms and ways of thinking?
- 17:36What action will you take today
- 17:38to begin creating momentum toward the life you truly desire?
- 17:45I'm Jon Street,
- 17:46and I'm so glad that you watched this episode today.
- 17:49If it resonated with you, please like, share,
- 17:51please subscribe, help me get this word out there
- 17:54to help everybody know that they have a momentum spiral
- 17:58that they can put in action towards their goals.
- 18:01Thanks so much, and I'll see you next time.
