Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: We're still waiting for answers on the ferries
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So did you hear the disappointment oozing out of that
- 0:02Speaker 1: maritime union guy I just spoke to when we find out,
- 0:05Speaker 1: of course, the break fee for the inter island ferries
- 0:07Speaker 1: will be around three hundred million hurricanes, it's more like
- 0:09Speaker 1: a billion. But that recon felt like a reckon, if
- 0:12Speaker 1: you know what I mean. The fairies, by the way,
- 0:14Speaker 1: only cost five hundred and fifty one million dollars, so
- 0:16Speaker 1: three hundred mil that's sixty percent of the cost of
- 0:19Speaker 1: the ferries just to break the contract. So if we
- 0:22Speaker 1: do accept that a billion dollars has been spent on
- 0:24Speaker 1: nothing at all, it's making labours light rail fiasco look trivial.
- 0:29Speaker 1: The union guy caught all the situation Nikola Willis's mistake,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and I have to say I agree. She is hoping
- 0:36Speaker 1: to be remembered as the savior of the economy, but
- 0:38Speaker 1: she will never escape this billion dollar boat botch up,
- 0:42Speaker 1: a botch up she jumped into because I think she
- 0:44Speaker 1: just wanted to strike a blow against labor and they're spending.
- 0:47Speaker 1: And also Kiwi Rail, who seemed to think the government
- 0:49Speaker 1: is an open bank. Winston Peters is rushing to patch
- 0:52Speaker 1: things up. We always seem to forget what the real
- 0:55Speaker 1: cost of the project is. Yeah, five hundred and fifty
- 0:57Speaker 1: mil on some boats, but it's the wharves and more
- 1:01Speaker 1: particularly the Wellington Wolves. They need to be renovated. They
- 1:05Speaker 1: need to be earthquake strengthened, they need to be future proofed.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We need to decide if they need real infrastructure at
- 1:10Speaker 1: all so we can roll a train on a ship
- 1:12Speaker 1: or do we have a terminal where we swap off
- 1:14Speaker 1: over the cargo. We need to decide the capacity of
- 1:17Speaker 1: the terminals. And these are all questions that never make
- 1:21Speaker 1: the public decision. It was a three to four billion
- 1:24Speaker 1: dollar project. The boats are only five hundred and fifty
- 1:27Speaker 1: millli of that, So where's the debate on all the rest?
- 1:30Speaker 1: And as we wait for Winston's grand answer to this
- 1:33Speaker 1: three billion dollar question, I hope he will cover those
- 1:35Speaker 1: issues as much as the floating stock. For more from
