- 0:00Speaker 1: Friday night, the Yukon women will collide with North Carolina's
- 0:04Speaker 1: Tar Heels. They'll be in Greensboro, Husky's first game against
- 0:08Speaker 1: the ranked opponent, Bob Joyce. Deb Fisk will be there
- 0:12Speaker 1: for all the action, beginning at five thirty here along
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network, Appenavarsited Network dot Com.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We're back with Dan Hurley. Ukon off to a two
- 0:21Speaker 1: and oh start. They get Lemoine this week. A little
- 0:25Speaker 1: bit later on, it's gonna be Memphis to start Maui
- 0:28Speaker 1: and that championship out.
- 0:31Speaker 2: There in Hawaii.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Let's just finish up here. Dan with Aiden Mahine, a
- 0:36Speaker 1: guy that's had success right Saint Mary's on teams that
- 0:40Speaker 1: were seeded fifth in the NCAA tournament. He's seen it,
- 0:43Speaker 1: he's done it. How's he faring so far? I mean
- 0:47Speaker 1: we saw him against u ur i am Mohican Son.
- 0:49Speaker 1: He looked really ready and then you know, every game's different.
- 0:54Speaker 1: So what's your takes so far and what you've seen
- 0:56Speaker 1: from Aiden?
- 0:59Speaker 2: Yeah? I think we see in spurts of uh, you know,
- 1:02Speaker 2: visibility offensively, you know, like in the exhibition game versus
- 1:07Speaker 2: versus Rhode Island. And you know in that moments during
- 1:10Speaker 2: the UH the New Hampshire game, I think you short
- 1:15Speaker 2: spurts of his impact offensively. You know, it's it's it's
- 1:20Speaker 2: you know, we need him to play on the ball,
- 1:25Speaker 2: probably a lot more than UH than he's used to.
- 1:30Speaker 2: And you know that's something we talk about when we
- 1:33Speaker 2: recruited him, because it's UH, for what we're trying to
- 1:37Speaker 2: do from a from a side standpoint, playing UH, playing
- 1:43Speaker 2: Hassan and and Aiden together for long stretches UH would
- 1:47Speaker 2: not be a great recipe for us to have a
- 1:49Speaker 2: high ceiling and to have, you know, a great season.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So you know, we got to split those guards up
- 1:56Speaker 2: and UH as much as possible. And I just think
- 2:00Speaker 2: transitioning to being on the ball a lot more, you know,
- 2:05Speaker 2: transitioning to the way that we do things. Our style
- 2:08Speaker 2: of play is a lot different than I think what
- 2:11Speaker 2: he's used to. And and you know, he's got to UH,
- 2:16Speaker 2: you know, I think he's got to he's got to keep,
- 2:18Speaker 2: you know, keep showing up every day with a mindset
- 2:21Speaker 2: that I'm gonna keep pushing myself to get better. And
- 2:25Speaker 2: and I think he's a guy that that that's definitely
- 2:28Speaker 2: gonna be able to help us this year. You know.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Right now we're still searching, you know, for you know,
- 2:34Speaker 2: who's going to start and who's going to come off
- 2:36Speaker 2: the bench. And I think, uh, you know, there's some
- 2:38Speaker 2: competition here, uh at a lot of spots.
- 2:43Speaker 1: You know, you were a history teacher at one point
- 2:46Speaker 1: in your career, Saint Benedict's uh, not a chemistry teacher
- 2:50Speaker 1: that I know of. But you got to teach chemistry here,
- 2:53Speaker 1: don't you. Because you've got guys coming from a lot
- 2:56Speaker 1: of different spots. You got freshmen trying to work their
- 2:59Speaker 1: way in. How do you teach chemistry? Is there a
- 3:02Speaker 1: way to do that or is it just sort of
- 3:04Speaker 1: happen over the course of time with repetition and understanding
- 3:08Speaker 1: what your teammates.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Are all about. Yeah, I mean we just start spend
- 3:11Speaker 2: a lot of time with each other starting in June, Mike,
- 3:15Speaker 2: when these guys get here, you know, we we uh,
- 3:19Speaker 2: you know, we see each other every day. You know,
- 3:21Speaker 2: we work we work hard together, so that that that
- 3:25Speaker 2: builds a bond of forges. Uh, you know, a relationship
- 3:29Speaker 2: when you when you work hard with other people, that's
- 3:31Speaker 2: something that you love that there's a there's a connection
- 3:35Speaker 2: that you developed there, and you know it's it's what
- 3:37Speaker 2: we preach. I think you know in the end, you know, Mike,
- 3:41Speaker 2: no one's there's no no one here is gonna not
- 3:45Speaker 2: get to their best level of basketball. You know, like
- 3:48Speaker 2: there's no more surprises these days. I think you know,
- 3:53Speaker 2: it's like, just go out and do what you can
- 3:56Speaker 2: do to make us better on a daily basis. The
- 3:58Speaker 2: guys that are legitimate NBA level draft picks prospects, you
- 4:04Speaker 2: know they'll get there. You know. The guys that are
- 4:08Speaker 2: you know that maybe we'll have overseas careers or guys
- 4:11Speaker 2: that will get right into coaching or another line of work.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I mean, you know that no one is going to
- 4:16Speaker 2: get cheated out of opportunities here. It's very clear. You
- 4:20Speaker 2: know who the best players are. And we're very honest,
- 4:24Speaker 2: you know, with the roster that way. So I think
- 4:27Speaker 2: when you work hard together and spend a lot of
- 4:29Speaker 2: time together, and when you're authentic and honest with people,
- 4:33Speaker 2: I think that tends to get them to trust you. Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 1: One other thing about Aiden Mahine, I was wondering, obviously
- 4:39Speaker 1: you experienced as you were a guard in your in
- 4:42Speaker 1: your career He's a guy that has been playing off
- 4:45Speaker 1: the ball a little bit. Now you want him on
- 4:47Speaker 1: the ball more. What's that like for a guard? Is
- 4:50Speaker 1: that get in the way a little bit or is
- 4:51Speaker 1: it easy to figure it out or is it just
- 4:54Speaker 1: take time? What's he going through right now?
- 4:57Speaker 2: I mean basketball has gone real positionless, so you know,
- 4:59Speaker 2: I you're not looking for, you know, an old school
- 5:02Speaker 2: point guard. I don't eat Bob Coozy out there, you know,
- 5:07Speaker 2: you know, the game has evolved a lot.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Take them. What's that you could take Coozy if you
- 5:11Speaker 1: could get them.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not in the camp of like, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 2: historical players you know couldn't play in today's NBA. That's
- 5:20Speaker 2: like that, that's a that's a joke. You know those guys,
- 5:25Speaker 2: you know, all time greats would be all time greats
- 5:28Speaker 2: no matter when they played, doesn't matter the eraror so.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Uh yeah, but I don't know how we're getting down
- 5:34Speaker 2: that road. But uh, basketball is positionless. Everyone's pretty much
- 5:38Speaker 2: playing for really skilled guys around the center, and the
- 5:41Speaker 2: centers have gotten skilled, so you know, the need to
- 5:44Speaker 2: have that pure old school point guard is not as
- 5:48Speaker 2: important now as we've gone away from shooting guards and
- 5:51Speaker 2: small forwards and power forwards at the one through four.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's certainly a skill as as your guys
- 5:58Speaker 1: go to the NBA here and there. Uh, it's great
- 6:01Speaker 1: to have that ability to be a little bit of everything,
- 6:04Speaker 1: to handle, be able to shoot, be able to rebound.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Uh.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Let's talk about the forwards, because you've been talking about
- 6:10Speaker 1: the wings and the length of your team, and I
- 6:14Speaker 1: know that that really helps on defense for sure, and
- 6:18Speaker 1: I think it helps on running the break and getting
- 6:20Speaker 1: out on the wings and getting down the court.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Uh.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Is that something you look at now when you recruit,
- 6:25Speaker 1: getting wings that have length and can run and get
- 6:29Speaker 1: up and down the court like that.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yeah. I think a big point of emphasis in recruiting,
- 6:35Speaker 2: which I think has been a little bit of a
- 6:37Speaker 2: challenge this year and so far, and where we get
- 6:42Speaker 2: thrived the last couple of years it's just you know,
- 6:45Speaker 2: bigger guards having you know, Tristan who is six y
- 6:49Speaker 2: five and Cam who is you know six three, six
- 6:52Speaker 2: ' four and physically strong, and Steph who is six six,
- 6:55Speaker 2: and Andre Jackson who is six six and Jordan Hawkins who
- 6:58Speaker 2: was six ' five and just having bigger gotten ahem
- 7:01Speaker 2: aline with six four and very physical. So you know,
- 7:05Speaker 2: I would say for us, uh, you know, getting that
- 7:08Speaker 2: emphasis in in Uh just the bigger, bigger guards, bigger
- 7:13Speaker 2: wings that can do multiple things. Uh just it creates
- 7:19Speaker 2: uh advantages all over the court, driving the ball, seeing lobs,
- 7:24Speaker 2: seeing the three point line, rebounding the ball, guarding multiple positions.
- 7:29Speaker 2: You know, it's certainly a big plus.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Guys like Jalen Stewart and Isaiah Abraham and Jade
- 7:35Speaker 1: and Ross certainly fit in that category. Dan Hooley's with us,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and we'll be back with more of the Yukon Men's
- 7:40Speaker 1: Basketball Coaches Show. In a moment on lair Field,
