Speaker 6: Captain David Hodges of the Charleston Fire Department.
• 2:44
Speaker 4: Hey doing, my friend?
• 2:45
  Speaker 2: Good?
• 2:45
  Speaker 7: Dave?
• 2:46
Speaker 6: Are you I'm going to find Thank you for being here.
• 2:48
Speaker 6: And it's part of the regatta festivities on Sunday, I think.
• 2:52
  Speaker 7: It is Sunday.
• 2:53
Speaker 4: That's when the fire parade will be. Tell us about
• 2:55
  Speaker 4: the fire parade.
• 2:55
Speaker 8: Yes, Sunday one o'clock we start lining up fire trucks.
• 2:58
  Speaker 8: It's a great time. It's it's a great competition amongst
• 3:03
Speaker 8: regional firefighters. Used to be locally for years, you know,
• 3:07
Speaker 8: and it's continued to grow. Now we've had registrants from
• 3:10
Speaker 8: as far as Wyoming County that are coming to town
• 3:13
Speaker 8: to showcase their fire apparatus and to interact with the children.
• 3:18
Speaker 4: It is, you know, it's it's always a big part
• 3:20
  Speaker 4: of the ground.
• 3:21
Speaker 6: How how many years this been going on as far
• 3:23
Speaker 6: as you know, I mean, do you have any idea how?
• 3:26
  Speaker 8: I don't have that, but I remember as a kid
• 3:28
Speaker 8: being okay, so you know, there's there's forty six years.
• 3:31
Speaker 7: I'll be forty six Saturday. So so at least that yeah,
• 3:35
  Speaker 7: at least that's a kid.
• 3:36
Speaker 6: And you said they're coming from all over like Wyoming County,
• 3:38
Speaker 6: as far away as Wyoming County.
• 3:39
Speaker 8: Used to showcase their apparatus and the interact with other
• 3:42
Speaker 8: firefighters and just to spend time in the city. It's
• 3:44
Speaker 8: in it's an exciting time for the city. So many
• 3:47
  Speaker 8: events going on.
• 3:48
Speaker 6: Give us the layout of way that things are going
• 3:50
Speaker 6: to work, as far as the line up and things
• 3:52
Speaker 6: of that nature, where everybody lines up.
• 3:53
Speaker 8: So we'll be lining up at the Canal Boulevard West
• 3:56
Speaker 8: and Ohio Avenue, and they line up westward.
• 4:00
Speaker 7: It's wards Patrick Street and then we pull out.
• 4:02
Speaker 8: We go down Ohio and hit Virginia Street and take
• 4:04
Speaker 8: Virginia Street all through downtown all the way down to
• 4:07
  Speaker 8: Leon Sullivan Way.
• 4:08
  Speaker 7: For our parade.
• 4:09
Speaker 8: The street tree typically lined the weather looks great. It's
• 4:13
Speaker 8: gonna be hot, as Brian says, It's gonna be hideous hot,
• 4:16
Speaker 8: hideous hot, as Brian says. Uh so, it's it's gonna
• 4:20
Speaker 8: be a great parade.
• 4:22
Speaker 6: Now, go back to when you were a kid and
• 4:24
Speaker 6: you talked about coming to the fire parade. What was
• 4:26
Speaker 6: it as that that that that kid that made you.
• 4:29
Speaker 4: Want to do this for a living.
• 4:31
Speaker 8: So I was raised around fire departments. My dad was
• 4:33
Speaker 8: longtime fire chief in my hometown of Whitesville down in
• 4:36
Speaker 8: Boone County, So, uh you know, I was always I
• 4:40
Speaker 8: grew up in a fire station, grew up around fire trucks,
• 4:42
Speaker 8: and I'm still like a kid when at heart when
• 4:44
Speaker 8: it comes to fire trucks, I love looking at other
• 4:46
Speaker 8: people's equipment, their ideas, their concepts. It's just we're all
• 4:50
Speaker 8: children like fire trucks, And I guess I'm still a
• 4:53
  Speaker 8: childhood heart.
• 4:54
  Speaker 4: Don't you.
• 4:54
Speaker 6: I think this is very interesting, and I guess maybe
• 4:58
Speaker 6: this is true some other professions as well, but it's
• 5:00
Speaker 6: it seems to me. I talk to a lot of
• 5:01
Speaker 6: folks that are in law enforcement, whether they're police officers,
• 5:04
Speaker 6: maybe they're in magistrates, whatever, and they say, well, my
• 5:07
Speaker 6: dad was or my grandfather was me a police and
• 5:10
Speaker 6: fire is it just something that you think is.
• 5:11
Speaker 4: In the blood of first responders in general?
• 5:13
Speaker 8: It's generational? Yeah, yeah, we have some generations here. It's
• 5:17
Speaker 8: the Charleston Fire Department. You know, once you get hooked
• 5:20
Speaker 8: on it, it's just a trap. You can't get away
• 5:22
Speaker 8: from it. You know, I'm nearing that retirement age, the
• 5:25
Speaker 8: magic age of fifty that we all talk about and
• 5:27
Speaker 8: look forward to, and you sort of get hard feelings
• 5:30
Speaker 8: about that. You start worrying about that and like, oh man,
• 5:33
Speaker 8: what else do I know besides fire service?
• 5:35
Speaker 6: Well, and you know, we've have we seen and this
• 5:38
Speaker 6: is not necessarily an issue for you, but we've seen
• 5:40
Speaker 6: issues around the state where a lot of our volunteer
• 5:43
Speaker 6: fire departments are either closing or losing members because they're
• 5:47
Speaker 6: just not a lot of young people. That seemingly, and
• 5:50
Speaker 6: I could be wrong, that seemingly want to go into this.
• 5:53
  Speaker 7: Yeah it is.
• 5:54
Speaker 8: It's and you know, and a lot of other career
• 5:55
Speaker 8: fire departments are seeing at decrease in recruitments and the
• 5:59
  Speaker 8: public's verse, agency's law enforcement wading oft, they're seeing a
• 6:02
Speaker 8: decrease in recruitment of the younger generations just not want
• 6:05
Speaker 8: to enter the public safety field. But it's a great field.
• 6:08
Speaker 8: It's got great benefits. It's very rewarding. But fortunately here
• 6:12
  Speaker 8: at Charleston.
• 6:13
  Speaker 7: We're doing well.
• 6:14
Speaker 8: We have great We still have an active hiring list.
• 6:16
Speaker 8: We just hired twelve firefighters correction eleven. So you know,
• 6:22
Speaker 8: we're we're doing what great. I think that the testament
• 6:25
Speaker 8: goes out to all the crews, you know, the personnel
• 6:27
Speaker 8: we have, the spreading the great word of what a
• 6:29
Speaker 8: great organization we have here in the city.
• 6:31
Speaker 6: So when David Hodges again from the Charleston Fire Department
• 6:34
Speaker 6: about the fire parade and it'll happen on Sunday, it's
• 6:39
Speaker 6: part of the regarded in downtown Charleston.
• 6:41
Speaker 4: Of course, you can go to.
• 6:42
Speaker 6: The regattas social media or our websites we get information.
• 6:45
Speaker 6: City of Charleston has got it all there as well.
• 6:47
Speaker 6: And again with so many things going on the Regatta.
• 6:49
Speaker 6: I've got a guest coming on every week to talk
• 6:51
Speaker 6: about the different don't leave it my man Adam Harris
• 6:53
Speaker 6: at because he's gonna come and talk wrestling tomorrow about
• 6:57
Speaker 6: that about the Regatta pro wrestling event of course I
• 6:59
Speaker 6: may it's going to be on Thursday as well. But
• 7:01
Speaker 6: this is just one big part of so many different
• 7:03
Speaker 6: things go into making Regard a huge. Now, you said
• 7:06
Speaker 6: you're a Boom County guy. Yes, did you come to
• 7:09
Speaker 6: the regatta though as a kid?
• 7:10
  Speaker 1: Oh?
• 7:10
  Speaker 7: Absolutely absolutely.
• 7:11
Speaker 8: That's some of my best memories is as a as
• 7:14
Speaker 8: a child is coming down to Regatta and seeing you know,
• 7:17
Speaker 8: some of the larger bands and back then Alabama things
• 7:20
Speaker 8: like that, and they're coming back. But yeah, so it's
• 7:25
Speaker 8: gonna be a busy evening that day. I'll try to
• 7:26
Speaker 8: make appearance at Alabama and I'll try to come on
• 7:29
Speaker 8: down the street and see Montel Jordan and Bobby Brown.
• 7:32
Speaker 6: Now I know that you know, with with both of
• 7:35
Speaker 6: these festivities going on, and we've talked about it. Uh
• 7:39
Speaker 6: uh that city services, whether it's you guys, whether it's police,
• 7:42
Speaker 6: whether it's for you know, any kind of first responder
• 7:45
Speaker 6: or whatever. Street department. Everybody is going to be a
• 7:47
Speaker 6: little bit stretched for this, and of course you're going
• 7:49
Speaker 6: to be adding the heat into it as well. Temperatures
• 7:52
Speaker 6: not the heat, and actual temperatures are gonna be up
• 7:55
Speaker 6: around one hundred, maybe a little bit warmer as we
• 7:57
Speaker 6: headed into the fourth h line weekend. You guys prepared
• 7:59
  Speaker 6: for all this?
• 7:59
Speaker 7: We are? We like to think we are.
• 8:02
Speaker 8: You know, the operations Chief's been working very busily trying
• 8:06
Speaker 8: to feel all the walk teams that we need.
• 8:09
Speaker 7: We know it's a very busy time for us.
• 8:10
Speaker 8: We got to have so many divers on the water,
• 8:12
Speaker 8: water rescue teams out on the river, and and our
• 8:16
Speaker 8: walk teams. I can't say enough about how import they're
• 8:18
  Speaker 8: going to be.
• 8:19
Speaker 4: And when you say walk teams, to find.
• 8:20
Speaker 7: This, paramedics and e mts. It's going to be out
• 8:22
  Speaker 7: on the street.
• 8:23
Speaker 4: Literally just what the name implies, walking around.
• 8:25
Speaker 7: Walking on the around, checking well being.
• 8:27
Speaker 8: Yeah, they have a beat like a police officer would
• 8:29
Speaker 8: be old school, So they're going to be out walking
• 8:32
Speaker 8: around just trying, you know, checking the well being of people.
• 8:34
Speaker 8: They're gonna be in the quadrants that way, if someone
• 8:36
Speaker 8: does collapse, they're quickly to respond to them, you know,
• 8:41
Speaker 8: checking the chill zones, referring people to them. If somebody's
• 8:43
Speaker 8: getting overheat, there's gonna be so many chill zone set
• 8:45
Speaker 8: up that they can go and cool off at. So yeah,
• 8:48
Speaker 8: it's gonna be a very busy time, but I think
• 8:50
  Speaker 8: we're prepared.
• 8:51
Speaker 6: What is it that people need to know when they
• 8:53
Speaker 6: come out to regatta? As far as that, I mean,
• 8:55
Speaker 6: the temperatures are going to be extremely hot. You put
• 8:58
Speaker 6: a lot of bodies in there together. What is it
• 9:00
Speaker 6: that the average person needs to know when they come
• 9:03
Speaker 6: out here? Because sometimes you know, when people have heat
• 9:05
Speaker 6: strokes or they get overcome by the heat or whatever,
• 9:08
  Speaker 6: they'll they'll say, well, I thought I was okay and
• 9:10
  Speaker 6: I wasn't.
• 9:10
Speaker 4: What if people need to.
• 9:11
Speaker 7: Know know your limitations.
• 9:13
Speaker 8: You know, if you're not accustomed to being out in
• 9:16
Speaker 8: the heat, be prepared. You know, hydrations great, You know
• 9:22
  Speaker 8: that it's it's a it's a it's a drinking holiday,
• 9:25
Speaker 8: so pace yourselves. You know, you definitely need to substitute
• 9:29
Speaker 8: some water in with that if you're drinking consuming alcohol.
• 9:33
Speaker 8: Just be prepared for the situation. Identify you know, if
• 9:36
Speaker 8: you start feeling bad, get the cool where you seek
• 9:38
Speaker 8: some shades, seek some shelter, seek some assistance from someone, And.
• 9:41
Speaker 4: There's nothing like water.
• 9:42
Speaker 6: I mean, we all might like to have an adult
• 9:44
Speaker 6: beverage or a coke or Pepsi or Gator ray, even
• 9:46
Speaker 6: Gator even the sports drinks.
• 9:48
Speaker 4: There's nothing like water.
• 9:49
Speaker 8: There's nothing like water. You know that that's the key
• 9:51
  Speaker 8: to hydration.
• 9:52
Speaker 6: And you talked about being on the water as far
• 9:55
Speaker 6: as the river goes. This entire festival is built on
• 9:57
Speaker 6: the river, you know. So what people need to know
• 10:01
Speaker 6: about I saw actually saw you a couple doing a
• 10:03
Speaker 6: couple of TV interviews about this yesterday. What do people
• 10:05
Speaker 6: need to know about water safety? And how are you
• 10:08
Speaker 6: guys involved in that.
• 10:09
Speaker 8: Be familiar with your boaters regulations, Make sure your vessels prepared.
• 10:13
Speaker 8: Make sure you have adequate PFDs, fire extinguishers, all those
• 10:16
Speaker 8: require things. Make sure your vessels in good running condition.
• 10:20
Speaker 8: You know, you see a lot of everything from the
• 10:23
Speaker 8: largest stern wheelers the smaller boats that people bring out
• 10:26
Speaker 8: to enjoy the events. So just make sure your vessel's prepared.
• 10:30
Speaker 8: And the PFDs is the biggest thing, you know, we
• 10:32
Speaker 8: can't emphasize that enough. If you've got someone that can't
• 10:34
Speaker 8: swim put a PFD on them. You know, that's unfortunate
• 10:38
Speaker 8: when we do have someone to fall overboard and we
• 10:39
Speaker 8: have to make a rescue or whatever. But you know,
• 10:42
Speaker 8: just be prepared and know those voters regulations and.
• 10:46
Speaker 4: We say PFD that's personal flotation.
• 10:48
Speaker 8: Personal floatation a botom Sorry, yeah, no, I just want
• 10:50
Speaker 8: to make sure, buddy, Yeah, yeah, we want to clarify that.
• 10:52
Speaker 6: And look, you know, if you do have a couple
• 10:55
Speaker 6: of beers, you know, your swimming skills probably aren't what
• 10:58
Speaker 6: they should be. Sure, your skills in general aren't what
• 11:01
  Speaker 6: they should.
• 11:02
Speaker 8: Be at the right in your swimming, and you're gonna
• 11:04
Speaker 8: be dehydrating anyway from the heat, excessive heat.
• 11:06
Speaker 7: So those a couple of beers. Yeah, so yeah, absolutely.
• 11:09
Speaker 4: All right, give us all the details again.
• 11:12
Speaker 6: Let's kind of reiterate the times into places and everything
• 11:14
Speaker 6: for the fire parade.
• 11:15
Speaker 8: Lineup for the fire parade, it's going to be at
• 11:17
Speaker 8: one pm at Ohio and Canall Boulevard West. Parade's gonna
• 11:20
Speaker 8: step off at three o'clock sharp, and we're going to
• 11:23
Speaker 8: travel down Ohigh Avenue, through Virginia Street, through downtown to
• 11:26

Speaker 6: Ribbon cuts last week on a new manufacturing facility in Poke.
• 14:49
Speaker 7: Tell us about it.
• 14:50
Speaker 13: Oh, thanks for having me to talk about that. I
• 14:52
Speaker 13: can talk about new jobs and new investment all day long.
• 14:55
Speaker 13: That's my favorite thing to talk about. Yeah, last Friday
• 14:59
Speaker 13: we cut the ribbon on the Waterways Industrial Park, which
• 15:03
Speaker 13: is a facility that we purchased. Advantage Valley purchased a
• 15:07
Speaker 13: couple of years ago in Poke, outside of PoCA. It
• 15:11
Speaker 13: was one hundred thousand square foot manufacturing facility that had
• 15:14
Speaker 13: been vacant and abandoned for several years. It was in
• 15:17
Speaker 13: really bad shape. Sits right on the river with barge
• 15:20
Speaker 13: facility served by rail. We bought the building because we
• 15:25
Speaker 13: have such a shortage of industrial sites in the region
• 15:29
Speaker 13: quite frankly throughout the state of West Virginia. So the
• 15:32
Speaker 13: property had been sitting there, no one was investing in it.
• 15:35
Speaker 13: We stepped up. We bought it with the hopes that
• 15:38
Speaker 13: we would have a site for new manufacturing or an
• 15:42
Speaker 13: expansion of an existing business here, and we were fortunate
• 15:47
Speaker 13: enough thirteen months after construction started and was complete, we
• 15:52
Speaker 13: were able to attract Centauri Ground Support, which is a
• 15:56
Speaker 13: new manufacturing business entering into our market. It's a joint
• 16:00
Speaker 13: venture between a Swedish firm sand Vic, which does mining
• 16:05
Speaker 13: manufacturing producers mining manufacturing equipment, and Alpha Metallurgical. We all
• 16:10
Speaker 13: know about Alpha, so it's a joint venture between those
• 16:13
Speaker 13: two firms to manufacture roof bolts for the mining industry.
• 16:19
Speaker 4: And how did this whole thing come about, Well.
• 16:22
Speaker 13: The manufacturing concern, well, I think they had been looking
• 16:27
Speaker 13: for some time in the state. We were approached by
• 16:30
Speaker 13: their broker who approached us about whether or not our
• 16:34
Speaker 13: facility might be attractive to them, and they came and
• 16:37
Speaker 13: visited and right away they were very interested. They were
• 16:41
Speaker 13: faced with either having to build a new manufacturing facility
• 16:46
Speaker 13: in this of about one hundred thousand square feet, which
• 16:49
Speaker 13: is a very expensive proposition, very expensive, or they could
• 16:55
Speaker 13: kind of take a look at our facility and they
• 16:57
Speaker 13: really liked what they saw. Our facility is it's a big,
• 17:01
Speaker 13: old industrial property. It's great for heavy manufacturing with cranes,
• 17:07
Speaker 13: barge facilities served by rail it sits on seven and
• 17:10
Speaker 13: a half acres, so it was really what they need.
• 17:12
Speaker 4: Already made for this position almost was it was.
• 17:14
Speaker 3: Ready made for them.
• 17:15
Speaker 13: And I think the message here, and I speak for
• 17:19
Speaker 13: the academic development community in West Virginia, we need more
• 17:22
Speaker 13: ready sites for businesses here, whether it be raw land
• 17:26
Speaker 13: that has utilities serving it and fully graded, all permitting done,
• 17:32
Speaker 13: or whether it be buildings that are sitting there ready
• 17:35
Speaker 13: to be occupied. We have a really hard time competing
• 17:39
Speaker 13: with other states that have ready site programs and they're
• 17:43
Speaker 13: investing in their sites in their communities, and we just
• 17:46
Speaker 13: need more of that. The state of West Virginia is investing.
• 17:50
Speaker 13: They're starting to invest in a ready sites program, so
• 17:53
Speaker 13: we're getting more progress on that. We just need a
• 17:58
Speaker 13: bigger injection of funds in order to help our communities
• 18:01
Speaker 13: get those sites ready.
• 18:02
Speaker 4: And what's our timeline here as far as.
• 18:05
Speaker 13: It's for the new manufacturing facility anywhere from nine to
• 18:08
  Speaker 13: twelve months.
• 18:09
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 18:09
Speaker 13: So they came to the ribbon cutting. They had people
• 18:13
Speaker 13: from all over the world, which was really interesting. They
• 18:16
Speaker 13: had folks from Sweden, Austria, Australia and Germany who came
• 18:22
Speaker 13: that are part of this new manufacturing concern, and they
• 18:27
Speaker 13: were here for the first time, and they were walking
• 18:29
Speaker 13: through the facility and starting to talk about how they
• 18:32
Speaker 13: were going to lay out their equipment and what equipment
• 18:34
Speaker 13: needed to be ordered. So by the time they order
• 18:37
Speaker 13: their equipment and get it installed, it's going to be
• 18:39
Speaker 13: about nine months at a minimum.
• 18:42
Speaker 6: All those people from all over the world coming to PoCA,
• 18:45
Speaker 6: Yeah and saying, wait a minute, your team is really
• 18:47
  Speaker 6: called the Dots.
• 18:48
Speaker 4: Yes, yes it is, Yes it is. We love it is.
• 18:51
  Speaker 2: We love that.
• 18:52

• 19:11
Speaker 6: you don't know can hurt you. And you talked about
• 19:13
Speaker 6: those sites that are ready manufacturers in these companies.
• 19:18
Speaker 4: They'd love to hear that that these are.
• 19:20
Speaker 6: And obviously there's got to be as you said, there'll
• 19:21
Speaker 6: be some things that have to be adapted a little bit.
• 19:24
Speaker 6: But boy, if you've got a facility and you can
• 19:26
Speaker 6: go out there and market it to the country, into
• 19:28
Speaker 6: the rest of the world, it says, hey, we're ready,
• 19:30
  Speaker 6: come see us.
• 19:31
Speaker 4: It certainly helps out a lot.
• 19:32
Speaker 13: Yeah, because businesses need us to move at the speed
• 19:35
Speaker 13: of business. We cannot say to them, oh, you need
• 19:39
Speaker 13: a fifty thousand square foot building or one hundred thousand
• 19:42
Speaker 13: square foot building. Hold on a minute, let me go
• 19:44
Speaker 13: out and get some money together and find a site
• 19:47
Speaker 13: and we'll build that for you, and then please come.
• 19:49
Speaker 13: Because we all know that that's going to take two
• 19:52
Speaker 13: in three years sometimes to be able to pull that together.
• 19:55
Speaker 13: We've got to be able to move in a much
• 19:56
Speaker 13: more timely manner. So that's why it's really important for
• 19:59
Speaker 13: us to be able to invest in those sites now
• 20:02
Speaker 13: and for communities to do that. It is a bit
• 20:05
Speaker 13: of a risk. This was a heavy lift for us.
• 20:07
Speaker 13: We're a small organization. We stepped out on a limb
• 20:10
Speaker 13: to do this because we didn't get this all grant funded.
• 20:14
Speaker 13: We actually have a mortgage on this building now, so
• 20:18
Speaker 13: it's really critical that we do get some support in
• 20:21
Speaker 13: the state's support that they're starting to bring to the
• 20:23
Speaker 13: table is really going to be helpful. I didn't mention
• 20:26
Speaker 13: that this new manufacturing concern. They themselves are investing twenty
• 20:30
Speaker 13: five million dollars in this operation and they will be
• 20:34
Speaker 13: creating anywhere from one hundred and twenty to one hundred
• 20:37
Speaker 13: and fifty new manufacturing jobs.
• 20:39
Speaker 4: I'd love to hear them.
• 20:40
Speaker 3: That's a home run. It really is.
• 20:42
Speaker 6: Anytime you can get that, and that means that they're
• 20:45
Speaker 6: going to be looking for local people to fill these jobs.
• 20:48
Speaker 4: There's always a possibility of people, you know.
• 20:50
  Speaker 6: And when you're talking, I mean, I don't know exactly
• 20:52
Speaker 6: if you're at liberty to say, like what to pay
• 20:54
Speaker 6: for these jobs is or I mean, well mid to
• 20:57
Speaker 6: upper level. You can just use terms like that if
• 20:59
Speaker 6: you want to. But people will drive too. I mean,
• 21:03
Speaker 6: you know, if you pay them enough, that helps out
• 21:06
Speaker 6: the entire region because people are willing to drive too.
• 21:08
Speaker 13: Yeah, they have kind of arranged for different various jobs
• 21:13
Speaker 13: that they have, but they are good paying manufacturing jobs.
• 21:16
Speaker 13: And to your point, people will drive. And that's why
• 21:19
Speaker 13: we market regionally because we know that the labor force
• 21:22
Speaker 13: is coming. It's not going to come just from Putnam County.
• 21:25
Speaker 13: It's going to come from Kennaugh County, Cable County, could
• 21:28
Speaker 13: come from Boone County, Lincoln County, wherever. So it's really
• 21:32
Speaker 13: important for us to present ourselves as a region to
• 21:36
Speaker 13: these companies so that they understand that we do have
• 21:38
Speaker 13: a workforce that will travel anywhere from fifty to sixty
• 21:42
Speaker 13: miles for a good paying job.
• 21:44
Speaker 6: Now, when they start doing the hiring, I know that's
• 21:47
Speaker 6: all up to the company, and that's really not your
• 21:48
Speaker 6: alls think, but you have to come back and you'll
• 21:50
Speaker 6: have to let us know what people need to do
• 21:52
Speaker 6: to apply for some of these jobs.
• 21:53
Speaker 13: I will definitely do that, and we certainly want to
• 21:56
Speaker 13: link them to some of our job training programs that
• 21:59
Speaker 13: are out there, some of the apprenticeship programs that are
• 22:01
Speaker 13: out there, because there will be jobs actually that are
• 22:04
Speaker 13: maybe on a more entry level that some people can
• 22:07
Speaker 13: get who maybe aren't skilled, who don't have all of
• 22:11
Speaker 13: the skills for maybe a sophisticated manufacturing position, advanced manufacturing position,
• 22:16
Speaker 13: all the way up to those that do work in
• 22:18
Speaker 13: the advanced manufacturing sector. So I think there's going to
• 22:21
Speaker 13: be something for everybody in the employement.
• 22:23
Speaker 6: But that's not to say that they can't get them,
• 22:25
Speaker 6: you know, no, they can because you start. I mean,
• 22:27
Speaker 6: you know, the history is filled with people that started
• 22:30
Speaker 6: at the lowest possible positions and before we know what,
• 22:32
Speaker 6: they're president of the company.
• 22:33
  Speaker 4: It can happen.
• 22:34
  Speaker 3: Absolutely.
• 22:35
Speaker 13: We've already talked about that, linking them to some of
• 22:37
Speaker 13: the employment training opportunities for folks that have entry level skills,
• 22:42
Speaker 13: and they were very excited about that because they do
• 22:44
Speaker 13: have some positions that would match up with that, all
• 22:47
Speaker 13: the way up to people who are in more of
• 22:49
Speaker 13: the advanced manufacturing sector.
• 22:51
Speaker 6: Talking to Teryl Ellis again of Advantage Valley, but they
• 22:54
Speaker 6: have allan show on five eighty line Bronche imparted by
• 22:55
Speaker 6: the All New Generations Board of Hurricane Visit Generations for
• 22:58
Speaker 6: dot Com. But when we talk about till having a
• 23:01
Speaker 6: facility like this, it doesnt just affect that facility. Those
• 23:03
Speaker 6: people are going to go to the local grocery store,
• 23:06
Speaker 6: those people are going to get gas at the local places,
• 23:08
Speaker 6: they are going to go to the flower shop.
• 23:10
Speaker 4: They're going to do all.
• 23:11
Speaker 6: These things, and so it spreads throughout the community and
• 23:14
  Speaker 6: throughout the valley.
• 23:15
Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, actually there's studies that show that one
• 23:18
Speaker 13: manufacturing job will generate you know, anywhere from four to
• 23:22
Speaker 13: five to six indirect new jobs created in the economy.
• 23:27
Speaker 13: So we we feel very fortunate that we were able
• 23:29
Speaker 13: to get this company. And think about it, it's one
• 23:33
Speaker 13: hundred and twenty to one hundred and fifty families that
• 23:37
Speaker 13: are positively impacted by the They're.
• 23:39
Speaker 6: Going to be just one guy or one one lady
• 23:41
Speaker 6: coming into work. There's going to be kids, there's going
• 23:43
Speaker 6: to be you know, spouses, there are going to be
• 23:46
Speaker 6: all the things that come along with that. So they're
• 23:48
Speaker 6: going to be and then in turn involved in the community.
• 23:51
Speaker 6: So it's the one one for everybody.
• 23:52
  Speaker 3: There, that's right.
• 23:53
Speaker 13: So we're really excited to be able to have that
• 23:55
Speaker 13: kind of impact, and you know, this is just part
• 23:58
Speaker 13: of a larger trend for our region. Recently sat down
• 24:01
Speaker 13: and started thinking back over the past four years about
• 24:04
Speaker 13: the investments that have been announced in our region and
• 24:09
Speaker 13: for the larger investments that are in the manufacturing sector.
• 24:14
Speaker 13: This is just manufacturing only. Over the past four years,
• 24:18
Speaker 13: we've been able to enumerate about fifty two hundred new
• 24:21
Speaker 13: manufacturing jobs that are coming into our region. Now that
• 24:25
Speaker 13: obviously that includes new core that We've talked about a
• 24:28
Speaker 13: lot time at up in Jackson County, service Wire expanding
• 24:34
Speaker 13: in Cable County. You know, there are a number of
• 24:37
Speaker 13: these new projects coming in that are either new or
• 24:40
Speaker 13: expansions of existing businesses. So when you think about that
• 24:43
Speaker 13: multiplier effect in our region, it does go back to
• 24:47
Speaker 13: I know, I was on here maybe two years ago
• 24:50
Speaker 13: or three years ago talking about our housing study that
• 24:52
Speaker 13: we did, and we started looking at all the new
• 24:55
Speaker 13: jobs that were coming in and then the indirect jobs,
• 24:58
Speaker 13: and it's a huge each number of new jobs that
• 25:02
Speaker 13: are being created in the region, and so that presents
• 25:05
Speaker 13: all kinds of opportunities for other kinds of investment in
• 25:08
Speaker 13: spinoff businesses housing. So we continue to work very hard
• 25:13
Speaker 13: on trying to get new housing developed in the region
• 25:15
Speaker 13: and that's been pretty exciting well.
• 25:18
Speaker 6: And as somebody to speak to that point, as somebody
• 25:20
Speaker 6: who comes from a coal mining background my family in
• 25:22
Speaker 6: southern West Virginia, I can tell you that you may
• 25:24
Speaker 6: have a coal mine here, but down the road you've
• 25:26
Speaker 6: got six machine shops that are supporting that. You get
• 25:28
Speaker 6: people that are supplying the fuel and supplying the oil,
• 25:30
Speaker 6: and everything goes along with it. I'm not saying it's
• 25:32
Speaker 6: going to have all that, but again you're going to
• 25:34
Speaker 6: have mean if something breaks, they got to have somebody
• 25:37
Speaker 6: local that they can depend on to help us out.
• 25:39
Speaker 6: The necessarily have to be something from that field, just
• 25:41
Speaker 6: somebody who can help get us back and running again.
• 25:44
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 25:44
Speaker 13: Well, we see that with the really the much larger
• 25:47
Speaker 13: investments like newcre We're already seeing smaller companies that are
• 25:51
Speaker 13: starting to inquire about locating here or who have already
• 25:54
Speaker 13: made decisions to locate here in order to be a
• 25:57
Speaker 13: vendor with New Core. So you do see that with
• 26:02
Speaker 13: some of those much larger investments. But to your point,
• 26:07
Speaker 13: there are also the non manufacturing jobs that get created
• 26:12
Speaker 13: to support all those new employees that are coming in.
• 26:15
  Speaker 6: You talked about housing, and that's a that's a very
• 26:17
Speaker 6: good point because you were on this show in the
• 26:19
Speaker 6: last year or two talking about the housing study that
• 26:22
  Speaker 6: you did.
• 26:22
Speaker 4: Any updates on that and what you learn.
• 26:25
Speaker 13: We are actually updating the housing study because we've had
• 26:29
Speaker 13: so much interest on the part of builders and they're
• 26:32
Speaker 13: wondering if our numbers have changed any and their lenders
• 26:35
Speaker 13: are wondering if our numbers have changed any So we're
• 26:38
Speaker 13: updating the study and that should be done in July
• 26:44
Speaker 13: mid by mid July, so maybe I can come back
• 26:46
Speaker 13: on and talk about the results of that. We continue
• 26:50
Speaker 13: to work with builders out of state and in state
• 26:54
Speaker 13: who use that study quite a bit. I mean, we
• 26:56
Speaker 13: all we all intuitively know that we have a housing problem,
• 27:01
Speaker 13: a housing shortage, and it's not just West Virginia or
• 27:04
Speaker 13: not just this region. It really is across the country.
• 27:07
Speaker 13: But being able to quantify that has really been helpful
• 27:10
Speaker 13: to our to the people we're talking to about building.
• 27:13
Speaker 13: So we are talking to some builders about some projects
• 27:18
Speaker 13: in Cable County and Connaugh County specifically those two areas.
• 27:22
Speaker 13: Of course, we all know about the project that got
• 27:24
Speaker 13: announced in Putnam County, that the Woodworth Farms project, so
• 27:29
Speaker 13: we're anxiously awaiting that and just sort of organically on
• 27:36
Speaker 13: on our own within with our own capacity in the area.
• 27:41
Speaker 13: We've got about I think last year we calculated about
• 27:46
Speaker 13: seven hundred and fifty units of new housing that were
• 27:50
Speaker 13: built in the region. That was just last year, in
• 27:52
Speaker 13: twenty twenty five, and there were about four hundred the
• 27:56
Speaker 13: previous year. So we're seeing a study increase in the
• 27:59
Speaker 13: supply of new inventory and hope to really increase that
• 28:04
Speaker 13: number significantly in the next year to two.
• 28:06
Speaker 4: And the bottom line is we still need housing though,
• 28:08
Speaker 4: and we still need it.
• 28:09
Speaker 13: We still need it because we had projected about ten
• 28:12
Speaker 13: thousand new rental units that were needed, and I forget
• 28:17
Speaker 13: the number now of the single family homes that were needed,
• 28:20
Speaker 13: but it's a very large number of units now that
• 28:23
Speaker 13: was across a ten county region over a five year period,
• 28:26
Speaker 13: and so even making a dent in fifty percent of
• 28:30
Speaker 13: that is going to go a long way to helping
• 28:32
Speaker 13: us with the problem.
• 28:33
Speaker 6: I don't want to talk about the footprint of Advantage
• 28:35
Speaker 6: Valley because I mean, we hear that name thrown out
• 28:38
  Speaker 6: there a lot.
• 28:38
Speaker 4: You've been on the show several times since I've been
• 28:40
  Speaker 4: doing the show.
• 28:41
Speaker 6: Explain the whole concept behind it, Advantage Valley maybe for
• 28:43
Speaker 6: people that haven't heard it.
• 28:44
Speaker 13: Yeah, So, the Advantage Valley footprint includes the Charleston and
• 28:48
Speaker 13: Huntington metro areas combined, and we also include Mason and
• 28:52
Speaker 13: Jackson County in that. And really the concept when the
• 28:56
Speaker 13: organization was formed, and it was formed back in the
• 28:59
Speaker 13: late nineties around the year two thousand, was to market
• 29:02
Speaker 13: those two msas or metropolitan statistical areas as one market.
• 29:10
Speaker 13: And because quite frankly, when we go out talk to
• 29:14
Speaker 13: the rest of the world about coming to West Virginia,
• 29:17
Speaker 13: number one, if they know anything about West Virginia, many
• 29:21
Speaker 13: times they don't, So we're that's right. Your cousin in
• 29:25
Speaker 13: Roanoke is not is not near us if they know anything,
• 29:30
Speaker 13: what they what they think is that it's a very
• 29:33
Speaker 13: rural and it is.
• 29:34
Speaker 3: It's a very rural small state.
• 29:37
Speaker 13: So their immediate impression is, well, there's not enough mass there,
• 29:41
Speaker 13: there's not enough of a market there, there's not enough
• 29:44
Speaker 13: of a workforce there for us to do anything. So
• 29:48
Speaker 13: when we can go out and market those two metro
• 29:51
Speaker 13: areas as one because it is one market, I mean,
• 29:54
Speaker 13: think about it. You commute from Putnam County into Charleston.
• 29:58
Speaker 13: There are Charleston people that commute up Jackson County to work,
• 30:01
Speaker 13: or people or go to Mason County. Now we truly
• 30:05
Speaker 13: are a commuter region and businesses do business with each
• 30:09
Speaker 13: other within this region regularly and have multiple locations. So
• 30:13
Speaker 13: we need to start talking about ourselves as one regional economy.
• 30:18
Speaker 13: And when we do that, and I go out and
• 30:20
Speaker 13: talk to people and I say, oh, we have a
• 30:22
Speaker 13: population of six hundred thousand in our region, about a
• 30:26
Speaker 13: third of the state's population. Oh and we have a
• 30:29
Speaker 13: workforce of about three hundred and fifty thousand. Did you
• 30:32
Speaker 13: know We've got two airports. We've got you know, four
• 30:37
Speaker 13: well three interstates, and several other four lane highways intersecting
• 30:42
Speaker 13: two Class two railroads. We've got three universities. I mean,
• 30:46
Speaker 13: you go on and on, and you start listing the assets,
• 30:48
Speaker 13: and then you start talking about the targeted industrial clusters
• 30:52
Speaker 13: that we have here in metals, fabrication, and chemicals and
• 30:56
Speaker 13: polymers and autoparts manufacturing, and start talking about the big
• 31:01
Speaker 13: names of companies that are here. Well, all of a sudden,
• 31:03
Speaker 13: people really start to sit up and take notice. Oh,
• 31:06
Speaker 13: you're not that small rural place anymore. You're a place
• 31:11
Speaker 13: that has a workforce with some pretty heavy hitters doing
• 31:15
Speaker 13: business there. So the concept was that we need to
• 31:20
Speaker 13: be promoting ourselves in that fashion as opposed to individual
• 31:24
Speaker 13: communities going out there and trying to compete in a
• 31:28
Speaker 13: global economy and not being able to get the recognition
• 31:31
Speaker 13: that we really need.
• 31:32
Speaker 6: And I think that's something maybe that's more common in
• 31:35
Speaker 6: Appalachi or maybe southern states or whatever. Is the fact
• 31:38
Speaker 6: that we think everything there's maybe some people have this
• 31:41
Speaker 6: idea that things stop at the county line. We say,
• 31:44
Speaker 6: what a friend of mine who used to work for
• 31:45
Speaker 6: the Small Business Administration that said, West Virginia is the
• 31:48
Speaker 6: only state that I know that really puts out the
• 31:51
Speaker 6: county that often. He said, she said, most of the
• 31:53
Speaker 6: people where I live don't even know what county they
• 31:56
Speaker 6: live in. You know, it's just because and you think
• 31:58
Speaker 6: about DC. How many and I know we're not DC
• 32:01
Speaker 6: or New York when he stretch in the United Nation,
• 32:02
Speaker 6: but how many people that work in d C live
• 32:05
Speaker 6: in other areas, live in Maryland, live in West Virginia,
• 32:08
Speaker 6: whatever in New York is the same way.
• 32:09
Speaker 4: How many take the trains? And you know, so on
• 32:11
  Speaker 4: and so forth.
• 32:12
Speaker 6: And I love Harrell the idea of the of the
• 32:15
Speaker 6: regional economy. And they're and and thinking, as she said,
• 32:18
Speaker 6: we got the universities and and and and and you
• 32:21
Speaker 6: look at the things we've done in in the Charleston area.
• 32:24
Speaker 6: Think about like the Shawnee Sports Complex, Uh, the things
• 32:27
Speaker 6: that are going on with regatta now and so on
• 32:29
Speaker 6: and so forth that impact that's what's good for Winfield
• 32:33
Speaker 6: is good for Saint Albans and what's good for Charleston
• 32:36
Speaker 6: is also good for South Charleston. And we have people
• 32:39
Speaker 6: in these positions, the mayors and the city councils and
• 32:42
Speaker 6: county commissions. I think that recognize that and and they're
• 32:46
Speaker 6: then they're they're all trying to work together and not
• 32:48
  Speaker 6: against each other.
• 32:49
Speaker 13: You're absolutely right. A good example of that was Commissioner Tenant.
• 32:53
Speaker 13: Natalie Tenant from Kodak County came to the ribbon cutting
• 32:57
Speaker 13: last Friday, and she and Commissioners skid More from Putnam
• 33:01
Speaker 13: County had a really good conversation about how, yes, this
• 33:04
Speaker 13: project is located in Putnam County, but there could potentially
• 33:07
Speaker 13: be many people from Knnac County who live in Connac
• 33:10
Speaker 13: County that are going to be working at that facility,
• 33:13
Speaker 13: and so they recognize the cooperative nature of what we're
• 33:16
  Speaker 13: trying to do.
• 33:17
Speaker 3: The other thing I'm really.
• 33:18
Speaker 13: Proud of, you know, we have nine counties in our footprint,
• 33:22
Speaker 13: and each county has their own economic development authority or
• 33:26
Speaker 13: organization and we partner with them. They are they are
• 33:31
Speaker 13: our best partners that we could possibly have, and when
• 33:35
Speaker 13: we generate leads, we bring the leads to them and
• 33:38
Speaker 13: you know, help. Hopefully they have facilities that they can
• 33:41
Speaker 13: show to companies, or when they have a small business
• 33:43
Speaker 13: person or an entrepreneur who's wanting to get started, they
• 33:48
Speaker 13: refer them to us, to our entrepreneurship program, and we
• 33:51
Speaker 13: actually have a business retention program where we help fund
• 33:55
Speaker 13: their staff to work with existing businesses. So we have
• 33:58
Speaker 13: this wonderful, symbiotic kind of relationship with those counties, and
• 34:03
Speaker 13: what I'm seeing over time is that they are working
• 34:07
Speaker 13: together so much. They are sharing ideas with each other.
• 34:11
Speaker 13: When they have a business that needs to expand or
• 34:14
Speaker 13: needs has a need, if they can't fulfill it in
• 34:17
Speaker 13: their county, they will certainly talk to the counties in
• 34:20
Speaker 13: the region and saying, hey, we want to make sure
• 34:22
Speaker 13: this business stays here. What can we do to help them?
• 34:24
Speaker 13: Do you guys have any resources to help? So I
• 34:28
Speaker 13: see that relationship has grown and grown, and that's probably
• 34:31
Speaker 13: one of the things that I am most proud of
• 34:34
Speaker 13: is that collaboration that we've been able to foster in
• 34:37
Speaker 13: the region to where we're all working sort of in
• 34:40
Speaker 13: lockstep towards the same goals.
• 34:41
Speaker 4: And I will put in a little plug here.
• 34:43
Speaker 6: I know that several organizations will be coming together for
• 34:46
Speaker 6: the State of the Valley at Valley Park in August.
• 34:51
Speaker 6: They couldn't get anybody else to moderate that, so they
• 34:53
Speaker 6: got me to do it.
• 34:54
Speaker 3: So moderating, Yeah, that's a good choice.
• 34:56
Speaker 6: I'll be moderating that event and we'll be giving you
• 34:58
Speaker 6: more information about that. But this is an opportunity for
• 35:00
Speaker 6: businesses to come together. And you've got organizations like yours,
• 35:04
Speaker 6: You've got organizations like the in Charlestonair Alliance, and you
• 35:07
Speaker 6: got the as you said, the different counties are coming together,
• 35:09
Speaker 6: the regional chambers of commerce are coming together for the
• 35:11
Speaker 6: savent at Valley Park in Hurricane and I'm excited to
• 35:14
Speaker 6: be asked to moderate this and I'm looking forward to it.
• 35:17
Speaker 6: And we'll give you more informations a week a little bit closer.
• 35:20

Speaker 6: and so we thought some prayers go out to his
• 42:19
Speaker 6: family and his loved ones. But if there was anything
• 42:22
Speaker 6: good that came out of the story, I'm talking about
• 42:24
Speaker 6: the dog named Hennessy. And you know again, this traffic
• 42:28
Speaker 6: accident on I sixty four, the driver of the truck
• 42:31
Speaker 6: tragically was killed. He had his dog with him, his
• 42:33
Speaker 6: traveling companion. The truck was on fire, but some good
• 42:38
Speaker 6: Samaritans couldn't do anything to help the driver, but they
• 42:41
Speaker 6: were able to save the dog. Dog was scared and panic,
• 42:45
Speaker 6: there was fire, his owner was deceased. You can imagine
• 42:49
Speaker 6: that the truck driver was from Iowa, and thanks to
• 42:52
Speaker 6: social media actually doing something good for once, the truck
• 42:57
Speaker 6: driver's family were able to come to West Virginia to
• 42:59
Speaker 6: pick up the dog yesterday. Now it does bring his
• 43:02
Speaker 6: owner back, I get that, but Hennessy did get returned
• 43:05
Speaker 6: with the family of the driver. I've got the video

• 43:22
Speaker 6: one part of it was very good to see and
• 43:24
Speaker 6: just as an animal person, just seeing that dog reunited
• 43:29
Speaker 6: with his family, I mean it was and it's all.
