- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo territory.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I am Mike D. Giovanni, former Elli Times Baseball writer
- 0:14Speaker 1: and host of the show, joined by Mark Trumbo, the
- 0:17Speaker 1: former Angel slugger my regular co host. Well, today we're
- 0:21Speaker 1: gonna do the midseason report cards. The Angels played their
- 0:24Speaker 1: eighty first game the other day and we're at eighty
- 0:28Speaker 1: two games total, so right at the halfway point. But
- 0:31Speaker 1: before we get to the grades, we couldn't let Wednesday's
- 0:35Speaker 1: game pass by without a little comment. Boy, that was
- 0:39Speaker 1: as wild as game as we've seen in a while.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I know a lot of Angel fans lament some of
- 0:44Speaker 1: the blown leads, the games that have slipped away this season, rightfully,
- 0:48Speaker 1: so I don't know that those things even out over
- 0:51Speaker 1: the course of one sixty two. But they were definitely
- 0:55Speaker 1: on the receiving end of a gift wrap victory on Wednesday,
- 0:59Speaker 1: when they scored the tying and winning runs on two
- 1:01Speaker 1: Fluke plays in the bottom of the tenth for a
- 1:05Speaker 1: seven to six win over the Orioles. The angel are
- 1:08Speaker 1: trailing six to five, two outs, automatic automatic runner on
- 1:11Speaker 1: third and the tenth, Nolan Shanawell hits This looks to
- 1:15Speaker 1: be a routine ground or a second base, but Baltimore
- 1:18Speaker 1: first baseman Pete Alonso took several pretty big steps toward
- 1:23Speaker 1: the toward his right, preventing him from getting back to
- 1:26Speaker 1: the bag. The pitcher goes to cover that, throws a
- 1:29Speaker 1: little low, the balls a little wide. It kicks off
- 1:32Speaker 1: Noan and into right field, tying run scores. Nolan goes
- 1:35Speaker 1: to third and then Logan o'hoappi with a check swing
- 1:39Speaker 1: tapper toward third base and the Orioles rock. Rookie catcher
- 1:45Speaker 1: Samuel Bisseio grabbed it and instead of going to first base,
- 1:49Speaker 1: he tries to tag Shanwell on his way home, misses
- 1:52Speaker 1: him completely, and the Angels walk it off. Mark, was
- 1:56Speaker 1: your head spinning a little bit as you were watching
- 1:59Speaker 1: this game.
- 2:02Speaker 2: It still is, To be honest with you, I think
- 2:08Speaker 2: I'm not sure what to make of that banana Baal.
- 2:12Speaker 2: To be honest, the Angels played a cleaner game despite
- 2:17Speaker 2: striking out seventeen times. The Orioles, I don't know what
- 2:23Speaker 2: their plan is. I was on their show the other day.
- 2:27Speaker 2: They're doing the best to cover kind of what's going on.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Rookie manager he felt like his bullpen needed to get work,
- 2:34Speaker 2: so he had eight pitchers up here in that game.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The minute any of them, you know, the first sign
- 2:41Speaker 2: of trouble, they were out of there. But ultimately it
- 2:43Speaker 2: was their sloppy defense. A big article the other day
- 2:46Speaker 2: in the Athletic cal Ripken's going to become more involved,
- 2:50Speaker 2: trying to help out and get things going. Some of
- 2:52Speaker 2: their players had very candid comments, saying Chris Bassett, I know,
- 2:57Speaker 2: said that they make way too many silly mistakes for
- 2:59Speaker 2: a big team and they need to clean that up.
- 3:02Speaker 2: So this is not an Orioles show, but thank you
- 3:04Speaker 2: to them for that victory for the Angels.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah, you played first base for many years. Pete Alonso's
- 3:11Speaker 1: played it for many years. What do you think he
- 3:13Speaker 1: was thinking on that play? Did he just over commit
- 3:16Speaker 1: way too soon?
- 3:19Speaker 2: The fault was his? He's experienced enough. I don't They
- 3:23Speaker 2: didn't see any comment from him after. I know Bisio
- 3:26Speaker 2: had some comments which I think he was honest and
- 3:29Speaker 2: did a good job with him. Said it was a
- 3:31Speaker 2: physical mistake and maybe there was a play at first,
- 3:35Speaker 2: but very young guy out there doing the best he
- 3:38Speaker 2: can should have never came to that. If they got
- 3:41Speaker 2: the routine out on a below average runner going down
- 3:44Speaker 2: the line. Credit to Shana Wall for the hustle. You know,
- 3:48Speaker 2: I got goofy after that, I know, embracing with the well,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you know they're having fun, but you know it's a
- 3:58Speaker 2: win against a team that they If the Angels are
- 4:01Speaker 2: going places, they got to beat a team that looks
- 4:03Speaker 2: like that because the Oriols didn't deserve to win that
- 4:07Speaker 2: ballgame in particular.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and I know the Angels have had their struggles defensively,
- 4:11Speaker 1: but how about that play by Silseth in the top
- 4:13Speaker 1: of the tent to prevent a second run from scoring.
- 4:16Speaker 1: He feels a tapper from I guess it's Gunnar Henderson,
- 4:19Speaker 1: hit it between the mound and the plate, and with
- 4:24Speaker 1: his glove flips the ball. I mean, he's not a
- 4:26Speaker 1: middle infielder, he's a pitcher, flips it to a HOPI
- 4:30Speaker 1: And it was weird how his glove kind of turned
- 4:32Speaker 1: from left to right as he's flipping it and ended
- 4:35Speaker 1: up allowing it. Ended up making that ball go right
- 4:38Speaker 1: to the spot where Logan could catch it and put
- 4:41Speaker 1: the tag on Blaize Alexander who's diving headfirst into the plate.
- 4:45Speaker 1: That was as good a play as I've seen any
- 4:47Speaker 1: Angels defender make in a long time. What do you
- 4:49Speaker 1: think of that?
- 4:51Speaker 2: It was a very nice play. We've seen some good
- 4:53Speaker 2: ones this year, so I think that it was up
- 4:56Speaker 2: there for sure. I guess they practice. They practiced it
- 5:00Speaker 2: a lot. I know the pitchers do practice that the
- 5:02Speaker 2: glove flip because sometimes it is the only play at
- 5:06Speaker 2: your disposal to get the job done, and it was.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Fortunately they pulled it off. And the Angels are a
- 5:12Speaker 2: team that the momentum shifts are pretty huge. Sometimes nothing's
- 5:18Speaker 2: going their way and sometimes everything is going their way.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I think it seemed like every replay, replay challenge or
- 5:25Speaker 2: ABS challenge went the Angel's way most of the weekend.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I know that they some sort of bias that gets
- 5:31Speaker 2: mentioned West Coast bias. I'm not seeing that currently. I
- 5:36Speaker 2: think the momentum definitely on the side of the Angels.
- 5:39Speaker 2: The Orioles Saturday, for example, you know, they didn't hit
- 5:43Speaker 2: any batting practice and come out I don't know why
- 5:46Speaker 2: they didn't. Rest in recovery look very flat, and the momentum,
- 5:50Speaker 2: you know, from there on out was on the Angel's side.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Before we get to some of these grades, what do
- 5:56Speaker 2: you think of Jose Sorianom.
- 5:58Speaker 1: You know, it's been a grind for him for a
- 6:02Speaker 1: solid month now, and I'm not sure what's going on
- 6:06Speaker 1: with him. He's throwing a lot more pitches. He doesn't
- 6:10Speaker 1: seem to have the put away pitch with his knuckle curve,
- 6:14Speaker 1: with his you know, his sinker is not as crisp,
- 6:16Speaker 1: his location is not the greatest. He just seems to
- 6:20Speaker 1: be laboring out there. And with him, it's hard to
- 6:23Speaker 1: tell if it's physical or not, because his velocity seems Okay,
- 6:27Speaker 1: I didn't look to see what the stuff graded out.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I was last start, but what are the last three innings?
- 6:32Speaker 1: I mean, that's just C minus.
- 6:36Speaker 2: That's actually they were C minus or Yeah, nothing great
- 6:41Speaker 2: at out high. It was soggy. It was a soggy start.
- 6:45Speaker 2: And okay, you want the real one of the real reasons.
- 6:49Speaker 2: You can't have an eight degree separation between arm angles
- 6:53Speaker 2: on your four seemer and your knuckle curve, so he's
- 6:58Speaker 2: tipping it. Essentially, it's too big a separation. Big league hitters,
- 7:05Speaker 2: they'll catch on to that. So the arm angle I
- 7:08Speaker 2: think on is both fastballs around thirty one and then
- 7:10Speaker 2: he gets way up on top of the knuckle curve
- 7:13Speaker 2: for him relatively and on a split finger. So pretty
- 7:16Speaker 2: sure that the hitters are Even if you don't know
- 7:20Speaker 2: exactly what you're looking at, you can perceive that and
- 7:23Speaker 2: something looks different. Maybe the hands stay back just a
- 7:26Speaker 2: little bit longer, and it's it's just not going his
- 7:30Speaker 2: way right now. So he's going to need to find
- 7:32Speaker 2: a way to kind of get this back on track.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I don't know if it's you know, with that's split
- 7:37Speaker 1: you obviously want to start it out relatively in the
- 7:40Speaker 1: zone and have a drop down, you know, for a
- 7:43Speaker 1: chase pitch. But he left a couple up, especially that
- 7:46Speaker 1: rookie catcher put one in the middle of the right
- 7:49Speaker 1: field pavilion. My goodness, that kid has some power. I
- 7:52Speaker 1: can see why they gave him that contract, but I
- 7:54Speaker 1: don't want to let this also another huge hit from
- 7:58Speaker 1: Wade Meckler. How about this kid two out bases, loaded,
- 8:03Speaker 1: two runs single in the eighth inning to tie at
- 8:06Speaker 1: five to five. This kid just, you know, his numbers
- 8:10Speaker 1: are solid. He seems to have a knack for coming
- 8:13Speaker 1: up big in the clutch. Not I mean, we haven't
- 8:16Speaker 1: seen much of this guy in the big leagues, and
- 8:18Speaker 1: he just does not seem to shy away from these situations.
- 8:21Speaker 2: And boy, he.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Made some loud contact on that hit too. It was
- 8:25Speaker 1: not a cheap hit, and he played right field, showing
- 8:29Speaker 1: he's pretty you know, has some versatility in the outfield.
- 8:33Speaker 1: This kid is quite the asset for this team right now.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Would you agree totally?
- 8:39Speaker 2: Totally? I know that he had a challenge that didn't
- 8:41Speaker 2: go his way early in the game. They're pounding him
- 8:43Speaker 2: inside right now with the fastball. He took a couple
- 8:47Speaker 2: strike three lookings earlier in the series, and then yesterday.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I think he felt like it is the fact I
- 8:55Speaker 2: think beside o reach ended up reaching for the ball probably.
- 9:00Speaker 2: You know, as a hitter you can kind of sometimes
- 9:03Speaker 2: you can see that jabb emotion by the catcher and
- 9:05Speaker 2: immediately just looks like it had to be a ball,
- 9:08Speaker 2: especially if you kind of thought it was to begin with. Anyway,
- 9:10Speaker 2: ends up challenging early, didn't go his way, but you
- 9:13Speaker 2: can see the determination. Another thing, he didn't get hits
- 9:16Speaker 2: on him. He put tremendous pressure on Gunner Henderson down
- 9:20Speaker 2: the line. I think he botched at least one, if
- 9:22Speaker 2: not two throws. Not a good series. He did get
- 9:25Speaker 2: three hits the first day. But Henderson didn't impress me
- 9:28Speaker 2: at all out in the field his sense of the timing.
- 9:32Speaker 2: He seemed like either he wasn't clued into the fact
- 9:34Speaker 2: that Meckler has above average or well above average speed,
- 9:38Speaker 2: and that's something you got to know as a defender.
- 9:41Speaker 2: A great play by Parraza. In the whole Guzman has
- 9:44Speaker 2: looked very good at third base two a couple other highlights.
- 9:49Speaker 2: But I wanted to get the good out because I think.
- 9:51Speaker 1: That Meckler beat out that grounder to Henderson and right
- 9:56Speaker 1: ahead of Solaar's home run. I believe he's in the
- 9:58Speaker 1: first inning, so you know that was a you out,
- 10:00Speaker 1: you know, hustle hit.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I'm not sure if they get him hit on the play,
- 10:04Speaker 1: but either way, I mean put a lot, put a
- 10:08Speaker 1: lot of pressure on the short stop who sat back
- 10:10Speaker 1: on a little too much, and then Solar hits a
- 10:12Speaker 1: home run. So good, uh, good play by Meckler. And
- 10:15Speaker 1: we're gonna take a quick break for a word from
- 10:17Speaker 1: our sponsors, and when we get back, we'll get right
- 10:18Speaker 1: to the report card on Halo territory.
- 10:21Speaker 3: You know why you are enjoying this minute because we're happy. Krats,
- 10:24Speaker 3: We're happy because we're wearing mac Weldon.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Yes, I'm six foot five and nobody can give me
- 10:30Speaker 4: tall clothing, but mack Weldon allows me to have it,
- 10:33Speaker 4: so I don't really have to care about how I look,
- 10:37Speaker 4: and I still look good. Because I don't put a
- 10:39Speaker 4: lot of time into what I do to pick out
- 10:41Speaker 4: my clothes, mack Weldon takes care of.
- 10:43Speaker 2: It for me.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Classic always in style made from the world's most comfortable

- 11:17Speaker 3: m A C K W E L d O N
- 11:19Speaker 3: dot com code foul.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 11:26Speaker 1: Mike d Giovanna. Well, the Angels are thirty four and
- 11:29Speaker 1: forty eight at the midway point, but there are only
- 11:33Speaker 1: seven games back in a really awful American League. West
- 11:36Speaker 1: is here, a division that features one five hundred team
- 11:41Speaker 1: Seattle Mariners at forty one and forty one, that puts
- 11:45Speaker 1: the Angels on a pace for a sixty seven and
- 11:47Speaker 1: ninety five record, not far from Pakoda's sixty five win projection.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Mark just general thoughts on the season so far.
- 11:56Speaker 2: It's going in the right direction. Recently say, I don't
- 12:02Speaker 2: think anyone can say that this is not a more
- 12:05Speaker 2: enjoyable brand of baseball. It's more competitive. I think the
- 12:10Speaker 2: energy has been better. It's much different than what we saw,
- 12:15Speaker 2: you know, coming out in spring training. The rotation has
- 12:19Speaker 2: had some real bright spots. There's been a couple of
- 12:22Speaker 2: guys that have scuffled, a couple of injuries. The overall
- 12:25Speaker 2: health has been fairly good. Trout should be back here
- 12:28Speaker 2: pretty quickly. You know, some guys like Joyce haven't been
- 12:31Speaker 2: able to get back, but I think they're making every
- 12:34Speaker 2: effort to and you know, you can look under the
- 12:38Speaker 2: hood a bit more, which is what we're going to
- 12:40Speaker 2: do with, you know, Baseball savant, neutral source. You know
- 12:45Speaker 2: some of the grades that they don't assign grades, they
- 12:47Speaker 2: just you know, we can go off the statistics and
- 12:49Speaker 2: where the Angels rank as a team in some various aspects,
- 12:52Speaker 2: and then I guess we can give our individual critiques,
- 12:56Speaker 2: or maybe you can give yours and I can agree, or.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Well, let's go right into it. Rotation we're gonna start.
- 13:03Speaker 1: We're gonna break it down a rotation, bullpen, offense, defense,
- 13:06Speaker 1: base running and abs challenges. I gave you the rotation
- 13:10Speaker 1: a C plus. I debated whether I should just give
- 13:13Speaker 1: it a C. I mean, overall, they're four to sixty
- 13:16Speaker 1: nine er and the rotation is twenty six in the league.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Not great.
- 13:20Speaker 1: They lead the MLB and Walks for starting pitchers with
- 13:24Speaker 1: two hundred and one. But to me, they have three
- 13:28Speaker 1: pitchers and that's the half year rotation who are performing
- 13:31Speaker 1: at a relatively high level. Reid Detmers three and five
- 13:34Speaker 1: with a three nine to three and Soriano eight and
- 13:37Speaker 1: four with a three four one. Overall, granted he has
- 13:40Speaker 1: not been that good lately. Detmars has one hundred and
- 13:43Speaker 1: four strikeouts and sorry has one hundred and two. That's
- 13:46Speaker 1: twelfth and thirteenth in the major leagues. And of course
- 13:49Speaker 1: the big star in my mind, the breakout pitcher is
- 13:51Speaker 1: Walbert Urania five and four two point four seven, twenty
- 13:56Speaker 1: two years old. This kid has not been phased by
- 13:58Speaker 1: anything in the big leagues. Very impressive. Now, the reason
- 14:02Speaker 1: I give them a C is they those three really
- 14:05Speaker 1: get dragged down by the guys who have really scuffled
- 14:08Speaker 1: in the rotation. Jack Kahanowitz had a let's see, it
- 14:13Speaker 1: was a I forget it was seven or eight something
- 14:16Speaker 1: e RA before he got hurt, Kakuchi oning three five
- 14:20Speaker 1: eight one before he got hurt. Gras and Rodriguez a
- 14:23Speaker 1: bit of a disappointment to me. I know he's coming back,
- 14:26Speaker 1: he's missed a lot of time, but he's got an
- 14:28Speaker 1: eight point six e.
- 14:29Speaker 2: R A right now.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And you know, those guys have really put a drag
- 14:34Speaker 1: on the overall performance of the rotation.
- 14:37Speaker 2: In my mind, Ryan Johnson almost threw a no hitter
- 14:41Speaker 2: the other day.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I watched he's got like two starts. You know, Hey,
- 14:47Speaker 1: good on him. You know, if he can be a
- 14:49Speaker 1: little you know, if he could be a factor, and
- 14:51Speaker 1: you know, that you need a fourth and fifth guy
- 14:53Speaker 1: to keep you in games and to be to have
- 14:56Speaker 1: any hopes of winning series, and you know, at least
- 14:59Speaker 1: trying to ench you way back five hundred.
- 15:02Speaker 2: You're correct in that regard. I would say grade it's
- 15:07Speaker 2: better than than what was yours. Did you say C
- 15:09Speaker 2: plus or A plus? All? Right, A C plus this
- 15:15Speaker 2: one we might have a bigger divide or the biggest
- 15:18Speaker 2: I think a B plus. There you go, well, coming
- 15:22Speaker 2: into camp, this is probably based on what I thought
- 15:26Speaker 2: coming into the season and what is materialized. Did I
- 15:29Speaker 2: think that all five starters, whoever they were, let's say,
- 15:33Speaker 2: the guys that broke camp out of spring, would all
- 15:35Speaker 2: you don't be crushing it. No, not at all. But
- 15:39Speaker 2: I've seen enough to think that they have three guys
- 15:41Speaker 2: Soriano right now, it's it's a coin flip. But for
- 15:46Speaker 2: the most part, they've had three starters that you can
- 15:48Speaker 2: count on to win games and usually look better matchup
- 15:52Speaker 2: wise than the guys they are going up against. So overall,
- 15:57Speaker 2: I think that the rotation has impressed me. Probably, you know,
- 16:02Speaker 2: booied big time by Walbert and Reed Detmer's just being
- 16:07Speaker 2: outstanding so far.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Yeah, for the bullpen. I gave the bullpen as a
- 16:13Speaker 1: whole a D plus four point six to era is
- 16:16Speaker 1: twenty fourth in the league, the Big one eight for
- 16:20Speaker 1: twenty four and save opportunities. And they've walked one hundred
- 16:24Speaker 1: and seventy two that's the third most for bullpens. Actually,
- 16:28Speaker 1: they've struck out three hundred and thirteen, ninth in the
- 16:31Speaker 1: league for bullpens. Not terrible once that I found kind
- 16:35Speaker 1: of odd. For relief pitching, twenty three hit by pitches,
- 16:39Speaker 1: third most in baseball. I think you look at the
- 16:42Speaker 1: good to me, you know, Ryan Zephyr John really struggled
- 16:45Speaker 1: in the first couple of weeks, but his last eight
- 16:48Speaker 1: games he's gone nine innings, allowed zero hits, seventeen strikeouts,
- 16:52Speaker 1: nine walks. Still a little high, but his average average
- 16:56Speaker 1: fastball is ticked up to like ninety nine miles an hour.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Right now, talked about Bachman Silseat. Oh not impressed, is
- 17:04Speaker 1: Mark Trump. But we'll get to you'll have your say.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Bachman Silsea to me have been the anchors of the bullpen.
- 17:10Speaker 1: You know, both have VRA's under three and a half
- 17:14Speaker 1: and one surprise in the group to me has been
- 17:16Speaker 1: the lefty Brent Souter. You know, he's he's given him
- 17:19Speaker 1: quality innings. He's got a three point eighty six ERA
- 17:22Speaker 1: in twenty eight games. Granted not in the highest of
- 17:25Speaker 1: leverage situation, but he's cleaned up a lot of innings.
- 17:28Speaker 1: He's given him some length when they've needed it. So
- 17:31Speaker 1: to me, he's been a bit of an asset out there.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Now once again the drags on the bullpen. Still not
- 17:36Speaker 1: sure what we're going to get out of Kirby Gates, Pomerantz, Romano,
- 17:42Speaker 1: Nick Sandlin, Alec Manoa. Early in the season, these guys
- 17:45Speaker 1: provided very little quality of relief, and that's why I
- 17:50Speaker 1: gave them a D. What do you got Mark.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Palmerans just signed with the Cubs, I believe today.
- 17:56Speaker 1: By the way, Oh, he's back in back in Chicago.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Good for him in Chicago. Will be improving recently. It's
- 18:06Speaker 2: not a strength and it hasn't been a strength all year.
- 18:09Speaker 2: The saves can tell you pretty much. All you need
- 18:12Speaker 2: to know now is that a product of maybe the
- 18:16Speaker 2: wrong guy's being out there. I think that that somewhat
- 18:22Speaker 2: the usage and the roles would be where I would
- 18:26Speaker 2: and that might actually not be so much the players
- 18:28Speaker 2: as the ones dictating who's going out there. I think
- 18:31Speaker 2: for me as a guy that has impressed at times
- 18:34Speaker 2: still needs to refine the command. As Ephyr John with
- 18:38Speaker 2: that huge fastball you mentioned, you want to talk about
- 18:41Speaker 2: where those hit batters come from. He's had a lot,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I think, a lot more than his fair share, which
- 18:46Speaker 2: is strange because to me is more of a cutter guy.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Although some people hate his cutter but I don't see
- 18:54Speaker 2: him as a guy that should be hitting a lot
- 18:56Speaker 2: of batters, but just maybe one of those fluke things
- 18:59Speaker 2: Kirby Yates. For all that everyone said he is death
- 19:03Speaker 2: on right handed hitters, and that is not joking. Right
- 19:06Speaker 2: handed hitters against him are having an extremely tough time.
- 19:09Speaker 2: He's punched out a lot of bats now the opposite
- 19:11Speaker 2: with lefties, so he's got to find a way to
- 19:13Speaker 2: neutralize those. But he has improved a lot. I think
- 19:18Speaker 2: my earlier comments, dating back to when I first was
- 19:21Speaker 2: watching him pitch, he's looking is the arm is looking
- 19:24Speaker 2: more lively. He's kind of probably with the success, no kidding,
- 19:30Speaker 2: but he's trending in the right direction. Some of the
- 19:34Speaker 2: other guys I think are coming around. Sam Bachman unfortunately
- 19:38Speaker 2: had a real blow up recently. Busy area is north
- 19:41Speaker 2: of three and sil Seth a lot of inherited runners scoring,
- 19:44Speaker 2: but he's also been brought in at an unbelievable rate.
- 19:48Speaker 2: He's the guy that gets brought in all the time
- 19:50Speaker 2: against your Don Alvarez, for example, the basis loaded, they're
- 19:53Speaker 2: going to him. So yes, he's given up a lot
- 19:56Speaker 2: of runs, but he's had the most opportunities too. So
- 19:59Speaker 2: if you don't want, who do you want?
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, we're gonna take one more quick break
- 20:03Speaker 1: for a word from our sponsors, and when we come back,
- 20:05Speaker 1: we'll get to the overall offense and team defense.

- 21:10Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumblin Mike D. Givanna. Well,
- 21:13Speaker 1: let's turn to the offense. I actually gave the offense
- 21:16Speaker 1: a B minus. They've you know, since May twenty second,
- 21:22Speaker 1: the Angels lead the Major leagues with one hundred and
- 21:25Speaker 1: seventy three runs scored. It's in thirty one games. That's
- 21:28Speaker 1: not a pretty that's not a small sample sky size,
- 21:30Speaker 1: And I don't think it's any coincidence that this uptick
- 21:36Speaker 1: concurred with the arrival of Donovan Walton, Wade Meckler and
- 21:40Speaker 1: then eventually Guzman over the last few weeks. So overall
- 21:47Speaker 1: the strikeouts, they still lead the major leagues with seven
- 21:49Speaker 1: hundred and eighty two. But they're you know, their tenth
- 21:52Speaker 1: in runs, twelfth in doubles, eleventh and homers, twelfth in walks,
- 21:56Speaker 1: which is good for them. And they're right in the
- 21:59Speaker 1: middle of the with on base slugging and ops. You know,
- 22:04Speaker 1: some of the individual performances, Mike Trout we talked about
- 22:07Speaker 1: a lot has really shined Wade Meckler and Donovan Walton
- 22:11Speaker 1: since they've been here. I mean, Donovan Walton three point
- 22:13Speaker 1: thirty eight with a nine oh four ops, three homes
- 22:16Speaker 1: and eleven RBIs in how many games is that? Twenty
- 22:22Speaker 1: five games, So once again, not a tiny sample size.
- 22:25Speaker 1: The guys who have kind of dragged the offense in
- 22:27Speaker 1: my in my eyes, Logan Ohapi has been better of late,
- 22:31Speaker 1: but he really was scuffling for the first two months
- 22:34Speaker 1: of the season. Yoann Mancata and Josh Lowen they were here,
- 22:39Speaker 1: really dragged the offense down. So I'd say overall, once again,
- 22:44Speaker 1: the Angels are trending in a better direction offensively. It's
- 22:48Speaker 1: interesting that solaiers back and they got him right back
- 22:52Speaker 1: in that four hole. We kind of speculated before he
- 22:54Speaker 1: came back whether he would be a good fit with
- 22:57Speaker 1: the way the offense was, you know, scoring and and
- 23:01Speaker 1: and putting pressure on teams and manufacturing and doing a
- 23:05Speaker 1: lot of the things that we feel brought some versatility
- 23:08Speaker 1: to this offense. Bud, he's hit a couple of homers
- 23:10Speaker 1: since he's been back. Is so there going to be
- 23:13Speaker 1: a good fit with this team right now?
- 23:15Speaker 2: Mark?
- 23:16Speaker 1: And what's your overall great for the offense?
- 23:19Speaker 2: Great fit, big power, big power bat cranking them out
- 23:24Speaker 2: of the park, sometimes when they count, sometimes when the
- 23:29Speaker 2: game's a little bit out of reach, but nevertheless, he's
- 23:32Speaker 2: given it a mighty lash up there. He's up there
- 23:35Speaker 2: to do some damage and just some of those balls
- 23:38Speaker 2: that are down and a way, maybe take a few
- 23:41Speaker 2: of them. But maybe he'll hit him at some point too.
- 23:46Speaker 2: The offense is a mixed bag. Mike Trout one of
- 23:49Speaker 2: the unluckiest hitters in baseball so far this year. His
- 23:53Speaker 2: numbers are still very respectable, but when you some of
- 23:56Speaker 2: the statistical stuff has has said that he has got
- 23:59Speaker 2: no luck at all. He's made a lot of heart
- 24:01Speaker 2: outs to me, and his numbers could be actually better
- 24:05Speaker 2: than they are. I've seen improvements, so I think the
- 24:08Speaker 2: the I'll agree with whatever it was a typo, I
- 24:12Speaker 2: think what was your grade again? A B minus?
- 24:15Speaker 1: I'd change it to a B minus. I had C
- 24:17Speaker 1: going in, but I don't know. Last month, they've been
- 24:19Speaker 1: pretty impressive, trying to keep it positive.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Man. Yeah, no, I know you'd fit right in, uh,
- 24:26Speaker 2: you know elsewhere. But I think that they've Yeah, I
- 24:29Speaker 2: got okay, be B minus B. How about a bee.
- 24:32Speaker 2: I'll get them a B. They're improving. I like that. Well.
- 24:35Speaker 2: I like that they pivoted off of the all or
- 24:37Speaker 2: nothing approach. If you don't commend effort and uh, I
- 24:44Speaker 2: think that that buying largely the whole team. They've they've
- 24:47Speaker 2: gone to a different approach and it's worked out better
- 24:49Speaker 2: for them. They've had more success. Guys seem to be
- 24:51Speaker 2: more engaged. Guys are running harder personnel changes. Yes, we're
- 24:55Speaker 2: involved in that, but trending in the right direction, and
- 24:59Speaker 2: it's going a lot of runs. Since what may second,
- 25:01Speaker 2: where'd you get that stat?
- 25:03Speaker 1: I saw it in a newspaper maybe? Actually no, I
- 25:08Speaker 1: got out of the Angels notes. Actually yeah, I actually
- 25:11Speaker 1: lead those things, one of the rare reporters who reads
- 25:13Speaker 1: the notes. Let's get to defense, and I give them
- 25:18Speaker 1: a D on defense. No pun intended there. You know,
- 25:23Speaker 1: we talked a lot about Zach k Nettle this year.
- 25:25Speaker 1: He's got thirteen errors. I'm pretty sure he still leads
- 25:28Speaker 1: major league shortstops. And then you throw in I think
- 25:32Speaker 1: when Moncado was playing third base, I mean, when those
- 25:38Speaker 1: two were together on that left side of the infield,
- 25:40Speaker 1: it was not very good. So let's go to the
- 25:43Speaker 1: Baseball Savant outs above average and this is for team.
- 25:47Speaker 1: The Angels are twenty eighth with minus twenty outs above average,
- 25:54Speaker 1: which is not good. And the crazy thing is almost
- 25:58Speaker 1: all of that negative number comes in the infield. The
- 26:03Speaker 1: Angels infield minus twenty one outs above average according to
- 26:10Speaker 1: Baseball Savant. Mark, what did you would you grade the
- 26:14Speaker 1: defense out? And why the numbers say a lot?
- 26:21Speaker 2: Right there? It's been some bright spots. Nolan Shawnawall has
- 26:26Speaker 2: played a really nice first base. He had some great
- 26:30Speaker 2: He's picked up his infield. There's a ton digging balls
- 26:34Speaker 2: out of the dirt, which is something that I think
- 26:36Speaker 2: it is getting computed more. It wasn't a thing I
- 26:39Speaker 2: took a lot of pride trying to do it when
- 26:42Speaker 2: I played first, but it was something that other than
- 26:46Speaker 2: the guys that you were saving errors from being it
- 26:50Speaker 2: wasn't value, you know, I never saw anything. And arbitration
- 26:54Speaker 2: and the you know actually went. I did go to
- 26:56Speaker 2: arbitration one year. It was not something it's not something
- 26:59Speaker 2: that gets brought up. You can't nobody uses it there.
- 27:03Speaker 2: There's been pros has been outstanding. He made a play
- 27:05Speaker 2: in the hole that was Jeter esque and they talked
- 27:09Speaker 2: about that. I think Denser Guzman has has looked very
- 27:13Speaker 2: very good at third base, very comfortable. He had one
- 27:15Speaker 2: the bunt play picked up. That's a learning experience, very
- 27:18Speaker 2: young guy. Overall, the play at second base, I think
- 27:21Speaker 2: has been it's been solid. They've mixed and matched quite
- 27:25Speaker 2: a few different guys over there, but it's kind of
- 27:28Speaker 2: come together. So for the most part, it's it's been adequate.
- 27:32Speaker 2: The numbers, though, are pretty glaring. It's it's I guess
- 27:37Speaker 2: you got to look and see where those you know,
- 27:40Speaker 2: where they're losing some of those outs.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I was surprised. Joe Adell had five errors this year.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Obviously had the one bounce office his hat, which was
- 27:50Speaker 1: not good. But all right, let's turn the base running now.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I was trying to wrack my brain on first of all,
- 27:56Speaker 1: I gave him a D. And this is why when
- 27:58Speaker 1: you look at Baseball's a vaunt once again, they kind
- 28:01Speaker 1: of rate it ranked them by base running runs above
- 28:05Speaker 1: average and the Angels twenty ninth at minus five. Uh,
- 28:11Speaker 1: And I was I was a little surprised by this
- 28:16Speaker 1: in terms of why they rated so low. I know,
- 28:19Speaker 1: they don't have a lot of burners. I know, you know,
- 28:23Speaker 1: guys like Solaire on the bases are not very strong.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Then you have Mike Trout, who is zach Netto has
- 28:29Speaker 1: a good speed. Why do you any idea why they
- 28:33Speaker 1: graded so low? Base running Moore, lack of hustle early on. Yeah,
- 28:38Speaker 1: that's true.
- 28:38Speaker 2: No, that's not how the that's not that's not how
- 28:40Speaker 2: they created. Maybe it's a slight part of it. It
- 28:44Speaker 2: could be. I think a number of caught stealings would
- 28:48Speaker 2: probably factor in. You can those that want to look
- 28:52Speaker 2: at that up, they can do that. A couple guys
- 28:54Speaker 2: haven't had the highest success rates there and compare to
- 29:00Speaker 2: some of these other teams. What's coming to especially last
- 29:02Speaker 2: year it exploded with the stolen bases overall around the league,
- 29:07Speaker 2: with the new rules and you know, the bigger bases,
- 29:13Speaker 2: all these things and other teams that are built more
- 29:16Speaker 2: for speed are probably lapping them in that regard. I
- 29:20Speaker 2: think the Angel has done a decent job taking the
- 29:23Speaker 2: extra base, playing the style of baseball that I experienced.
- 29:28Speaker 2: You want to call it social ball or whatever, but
- 29:31Speaker 2: people I think that that follow the Angels know what
- 29:34Speaker 2: that means. But I think they've been at tad cautious
- 29:37Speaker 2: at times sending guys on base hits to the outfield.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Sometimes that is for the better. I think third base
- 29:44Speaker 2: coaches can come under huge fire. The Giants had to
- 29:48Speaker 2: make a move because of the over aggressiveness, and I
- 29:52Speaker 2: think the Angels gotting picked off maybe a few times.
- 29:54Speaker 2: I think that's happened.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I could think of a few on top of my head,
- 29:57Speaker 1: and yet I didn't look to see.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't think that they'd be rated as low
- 30:01Speaker 2: as they are, but that's these are not subjective. They're
- 30:04Speaker 2: numerical or twenty ninth in baseball, and you know, on
- 30:07Speaker 2: the basis so it's an area that could use some improvement.
- 30:11Speaker 1: All right, We're our last category is abs Challenges Park
- 30:15Speaker 1: consistently included this, and you know, it's become a pretty
- 30:19Speaker 1: integral and interesting part of this game. How did you
- 30:22Speaker 1: sort of break down the Angels for ABS challenges.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Well, you can do replay challenges and ABS. I think
- 30:29Speaker 2: replay challenges the Angels are second or third in baseball
- 30:33Speaker 2: in the amount of replay challenges they do. I think
- 30:35Speaker 2: the Dodgers are our last. Maybe they have a dozen,
- 30:38Speaker 2: the Angels have over thirty. Kurt likes to see, you know,
- 30:45Speaker 2: going for the headphones a lot. Hey take a look,
- 30:48Speaker 2: and lately it's been working. But they do challenge a lot.
- 30:51Speaker 2: I think, just not really in regards to this, but
- 30:54Speaker 2: the overall some of the stoppage with the some of
- 30:58Speaker 2: the flow of the game using eight pictures obviously still
- 31:02Speaker 2: haven't recovered from the previous ball game. But I don't
- 31:06Speaker 2: know how I feel about ABS yet. I think that
- 31:10Speaker 2: Nolan sawn Nowell for some reason you wouldn't think he
- 31:13Speaker 2: would struggle with it. I think he did get the
- 31:15Speaker 2: last one he did correct that might have been yesterday,
- 31:18Speaker 2: but he hasn't had a ton of success. Some guys
- 31:21Speaker 2: seem very tentative. I know Joeydell on a podcast maybe
- 31:24Speaker 2: Mookie's podcast, said he had forbid himself from doing it.
- 31:29Speaker 2: I know Troudy hasn't done it all that much. Some
- 31:32Speaker 2: guys do it and seem very convinced that they're right,
- 31:36Speaker 2: they end up not being right. I think Logano Hoppy
- 31:39Speaker 2: has improved a lot, at least behind the plate. And
- 31:43Speaker 2: I don't know if any of our pictures. Maybe one
- 31:46Speaker 2: time a pitcher did it. But how do you feel
- 31:48Speaker 2: about ABS overall? And then you can give a grade?
- 31:51Speaker 1: Well, yeah, let's first of all, we'll get to those numbers.
- 31:53Speaker 1: The Angels thirty nine point eight percent success rate as
- 31:58Speaker 1: a team, that's twenty seventh in the league. And here's
- 32:02Speaker 1: some of the individual breakdowns. And yeah, the number at
- 32:04Speaker 1: the bottom of your scream the name and the number
- 32:07Speaker 1: at the bottom of your screen Noan shan Well uh
- 32:11Speaker 1: challenge seventeen one sixth loss eleven. And now you know,
- 32:16Speaker 1: I thought going in has a reputation of great plate discipline,
- 32:20Speaker 1: good eye, and I still think he does have a
- 32:22Speaker 1: good eye, but it's surprising that it hasn't hasn't translated
- 32:26Speaker 1: to more success in the ABS. Challenging zach Neno is
- 32:31Speaker 1: only at fifteen percent, seven for fourteen, not that great.
- 32:36Speaker 1: And some of the other oswell, Perrazza three for ten
- 32:39Speaker 1: and thirty percent is definitely not great. And those are
- 32:43Speaker 1: the guys who have done it most. That horny up
- 32:47Speaker 1: top Jorges Solaire has won two and challenge five. But yeah,
- 32:52Speaker 1: it's forty percent. They're not. Oh, these are once again
- 32:57Speaker 1: Baseball Savant is ranking these and I didn't even know
- 33:01Speaker 1: what the column on the left stands for, but they
- 33:05Speaker 1: you know, they will. It's like above average or below average.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Some of the numbers they put on. Some of these
- 33:13Speaker 1: are really difficult to try to figure out, but the
- 33:16Speaker 1: hard numbers certainly speak for themselves. As far as overall,
- 33:22Speaker 1: I like it because I don't think it's stopped the game.
- 33:27Speaker 1: It hasn't been a big, you know, hindrance to the
- 33:31Speaker 1: actual pace of the game. They've been able to do
- 33:34Speaker 1: it relatively quickly. I think it's kind of I think
- 33:36Speaker 1: the fans dig it. It's kind of funny seeing some
- 33:39Speaker 1: of the reaction of the players who like, damn that
- 33:42Speaker 1: the whole balls and the strikes them.
- 33:43Speaker 2: I challenge that.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I thought it was pretty fun of the other day,
- 33:47Speaker 1: or I think it was last where Wednesday night when
- 33:50Speaker 1: show Hey o Tani challenge one on the mound. I'd
- 33:54Speaker 1: love to see more pitchers do it, and he was right,
- 33:57Speaker 1: so I think overall it's been good. I think the
- 34:01Speaker 1: strategy that it is forced teams to sort of make
- 34:05Speaker 1: is interesting. I still don't understand there's so many players
- 34:09Speaker 1: using some of these challenges in the first inning, and
- 34:11Speaker 1: we have seen a handful, if not more than a
- 34:14Speaker 1: handful of games where you get to that eighth or
- 34:16Speaker 1: ninth inning and well, the Angels are out of challenges. Boy,
- 34:18Speaker 1: they could have used one there. So it's become really strategic.
- 34:24Speaker 1: I hope they don't fiddle with it too much and
- 34:26Speaker 1: go to like three or four challenges a game. I
- 34:29Speaker 1: like the fact they give them one extra one per
- 34:32Speaker 1: inning and extra innings. I think that's smart. But overall
- 34:35Speaker 1: I'm okay with it. Are you okay with it? I
- 34:39Speaker 1: don't know yet.
- 34:41Speaker 2: I'm leaning towards yeah, kind of it Just there's no
- 34:49Speaker 2: when you get used to I think that that's the
- 34:51Speaker 2: hard thing for somebody who didn't play with this system.
- 34:53Speaker 2: You got used to having to deal with different umpires
- 34:56Speaker 2: and either were umpires a favorite the hit or there
- 34:59Speaker 2: were umpires were picture favorites. You knew that going in.
- 35:01Speaker 2: You knew sometimes you had to expand a little bit.
- 35:04Speaker 2: But pictures, I think no longer get rewarded, and there's
- 35:08Speaker 2: an argument that they should never be rewarded for having
- 35:11Speaker 2: better command and earning a little bit off the plate.
- 35:13Speaker 2: You might recall some uh, you know pictures that did Yeah,
- 35:19Speaker 2: some of that was egregious and you know, comical how
- 35:23Speaker 2: far they'd get off. But it was kind of a
- 35:25Speaker 2: merit system where pictures that you know, the umpire was
- 35:28Speaker 2: impressed enough. Hey, this guy's got it and he's making
- 35:30Speaker 2: it easy on me. Probably back there too. I think
- 35:34Speaker 2: part of the deal too is the catcher framing. These
- 35:36Speaker 2: guys are yanking everything to try and deceive the Empire
- 35:39Speaker 2: and make used to If you were doing that back
- 35:42Speaker 2: to the Empire would tighten you up pretty quick. When
- 35:45Speaker 2: I was a younger player in the game, hey knock
- 35:47Speaker 2: that off. What are you doing? Like, just catch it
- 35:50Speaker 2: as it is and you know, don't don't disrupt me.
- 35:53Speaker 2: But now they got to do a much better job.
- 35:56Speaker 2: I'm almost certain the Empire grading this year is going
- 35:59Speaker 2: to be worse than it ever has. I see some
- 36:01Speaker 2: of the scorecards that are coming in, and they are
- 36:05Speaker 2: where it looked like previous year's maybe ninety four, ninety five,
- 36:08Speaker 2: ninety six percent was about average it's gone much lower,
- 36:12Speaker 2: and I don't know if that's a byproduct of just
- 36:15Speaker 2: having the option to, hey, we'll just you know, they'll
- 36:17Speaker 2: challenge it and we'll get it right eventually. But maybe
- 36:20Speaker 2: it's added a lot of pressure too. It's different.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Definitely, going in with this new system, I thought it
- 36:28Speaker 1: would sort of decrease the importance of pitch framing. But
- 36:34Speaker 1: do you still think pitch framing is as big a
- 36:36Speaker 1: part of the game as it was before.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Absolutely. I think the other night Markotza getting thrown out
- 36:42Speaker 2: early on, and you can say why and laugh and stuff,
- 36:45Speaker 2: but he knew that the umpire that game was going
- 36:48Speaker 2: to continue calling that pitch that was probably going to
- 36:51Speaker 2: hurt his team a lot more than it was going
- 36:53Speaker 2: to hurt the Angels that low strike, knee high or otherwise.
- 36:58Speaker 2: And credit to a hop he was getting underneath them
- 37:01Speaker 2: and making them look good. But those two challenges, your
- 37:04Speaker 2: hitters are going to have a tough time if they
- 37:05Speaker 2: just keep peppering. I don't know if who had started
- 37:08Speaker 2: that game, assuming it was either you ran your story
- 37:10Speaker 2: on all, but it seemed like that was going to
- 37:14Speaker 2: be a strike and it was a tough pitch. You're
- 37:17Speaker 2: not going to do anything with it. But that's why
- 37:20Speaker 2: he did it, because that framing is still going to
- 37:22Speaker 2: be a big thing. We didn't intentionally skip over all
- 37:25Speaker 2: the outfield defense, but your early impressions of Christian Moore
- 37:28Speaker 2: in the outfield and left field before we wrap.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Up, well, if they continue to play Christian Moore in
- 37:34Speaker 1: left field, those outs above average numbers are going to
- 37:38Speaker 1: go down even more. I mean, it's been rough. I'm
- 37:41Speaker 1: not gonna lie. It's been obvious for everyone to see
- 37:44Speaker 1: at this point. I just wonder, can you continue to
- 37:48Speaker 1: run him out there and this is so impactful that
- 37:52Speaker 1: you want to as opposed to having I guess it
- 37:56Speaker 1: depends lefty and righty pitcher, with Meckler and even Donovan
- 38:00Speaker 1: wanting to some degree in terms of your platoons. But
- 38:03Speaker 1: I don't know. To me, I don't know how much
- 38:06Speaker 1: he played left field and triple A. If they're really
- 38:08Speaker 1: serious about moving in the left field, they need to
- 38:11Speaker 1: send them back down play left field every day. I
- 38:14Speaker 1: just think that is not an easy transition by any means.
- 38:17Speaker 1: It's probably way harder, and we any of us who
- 38:20Speaker 1: didn't play the game at a high level, think it is.
- 38:22Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 38:23Speaker 1: He just doesn't look real comfortable out there, and that's
- 38:25Speaker 1: a big concern for me moving forward.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Eighth overall pick.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Yeah, as a second base.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Well, they got to find a place for me. Isn't
- 38:35Speaker 2: that where you put the kid in the little league
- 38:36Speaker 2: that has the bad love check him out in left field?
- 38:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess, so, uh, why not play him at
- 38:42Speaker 1: second base?
- 38:43Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, a logjam is why I
- 38:47Speaker 2: out and these guys are contributing, and that's uh something
- 38:51Speaker 2: they're going to have to figure out. Who do we prioritize,
- 38:54Speaker 2: you know, third base? I think, who's my young player promising?
- 38:58Speaker 2: You know, the bat has looked pretty good. He's gonna lately,
- 39:01Speaker 2: you know, last couple of games not as good, but
- 39:03Speaker 2: his defense very impressive. So Kurt's gonna have to find
- 39:06Speaker 2: playing time for all these guys or trade some trade
- 39:09Speaker 2: partners for uh, some of the extra depth, maybe get
- 39:12Speaker 2: something in return if they do trade the open Piazza
- 39:17Speaker 2: might be a good candidate for that. You know, he
- 39:19Speaker 2: has not a good Yeah, so yeah, we'll see.
- 39:23Speaker 1: We'll see where the Angels are at the deadline. All right,
- 39:25Speaker 1: we're gonna close the show with that. Hey, thanks, for watching,
- 39:28Speaker 1: Thanks for listening. We appreciate it. Uh. Please like and
- 39:32Speaker 1: subscribe and we'll see you next time on Halo Territory.
