Carved into Thunderhead Mountain in South Dakota, the Crazy Horse Memorial is a monumental tribute to the Lakota warrior, taking shape since the late 1940s with artist Korczak Ziolkowski’s vision. Despite early struggles with funding and infrastructure, his family carried on the project after his death in 1982. The sculpture’s face was completed in 1998 at 87 feet tall—big enough that all four Mount Rushmore presidents could fit on its head.
