- 0:09Speaker 1: All right, Matt Strom got traded from the Phillies to
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Royals. You just heard Ken Rosenthal talk about it,
- 0:14Speaker 1: and Kratz is our Philly expert. He knows this team. Well,
- 0:17Speaker 1: so what happened here? Kratz? I mean, the Royals get
- 0:20Speaker 1: a great, very durable, reliable reliever, not a closer, but
- 0:25Speaker 1: a guy who can set up or pitch and high
- 0:27Speaker 1: leverage situations. Royals have been very active. The part that
- 0:32Speaker 1: I think we should start with is why are the
- 0:34Speaker 1: Phillies trading away a guy who's making seven and a
- 0:37Speaker 1: half million dollars this year and could be a very
- 0:40Speaker 1: valuable part of what three headed monster in terms of
- 0:43Speaker 1: left handed pitching that they have in that bullpen, which
- 0:46Speaker 1: is a nice luxury to have. The answer appears to
- 0:48Speaker 1: be a little money saving, but also some issues between
- 0:53Speaker 1: him and the team. We didn't get further details yet.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I'm sure we will, but mackelb reported on how they're
- 1:00Speaker 1: is a growing rift between him and the team.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Who knows, I mean, obviously Matt gil wrote it, so
- 1:07Speaker 2: you know there's definitely some where there's smoke, there's fire.
- 1:11Speaker 2: But without talking to Strom, which I have a hard
- 1:14Speaker 2: time believing he's not gonna come on the show at
- 1:16Speaker 2: some point to talk about it, because he's very open
- 1:18Speaker 2: about things. When you're open and you're opinionated about things
- 1:21Speaker 2: and also you're good, sometimes that rubs people the wrong way.
- 1:26Speaker 2: And sometimes as a player you do need to check
- 1:28Speaker 2: yourself in the things that you say, But as coaches
- 1:32Speaker 2: sometimes you need to check yourself too and understand that, Hey,
- 1:36Speaker 2: you know what, players are going to say things in
- 1:37Speaker 2: the heat of the battle, in the heat of emotional
- 1:41Speaker 2: ups and downs of the season, and you know when
- 1:44Speaker 2: you hear there's like rifts from the front office or
- 1:47Speaker 2: coaching staff. Come on, man, Like you're talking about a
- 1:51Speaker 2: guy who was an All Star in twenty four. Yes,
- 1:56Speaker 2: he kind of had a down year compared to twenty
- 1:58Speaker 2: four All Star season, but I mean his twenty four
- 2:02Speaker 2: season didn't look that much different than his twenty five season.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Except in his twenty four season he had like almost
- 2:10Speaker 2: it was a little over two months where he didn't
- 2:12Speaker 2: give up a run. Like this is a guy that's
- 2:14Speaker 2: not just a lefty lefty specialist. This is a guy
- 2:17Speaker 2: that gets strikeouts. This is a guy that can can
- 2:21Speaker 2: throw significant innings for you. And to me, it's it's
- 2:25Speaker 2: a prime case of what happened to the Phillies bullpen
- 2:28Speaker 2: last year. Yes, they added Johann Duran, but they had
- 2:32Speaker 2: already lost Jose Avlado.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Anytime you have to push all.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Your relievers up a little bit, you put them in
- 2:39Speaker 2: situations that maybe they would have been more successful had
- 2:42Speaker 2: they been able to.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Hit this part of the lineup.
- 2:45Speaker 2: And I think this trade pretty much was gonna happen
- 2:48Speaker 2: once they signed Brad Keller. Ironically, Brad Keller comes in,
- 2:56Speaker 2: used to be with the Royals, then Strom it used
- 2:59Speaker 2: to be of the Royals, is out. So you it's
- 3:03Speaker 2: funny how you know. It's a cyclical world in baseball.
- 3:07Speaker 2: But the strong trade and what Matt Gelb said is
- 3:11Speaker 2: interesting to me that they're willing to because we heard
- 3:13Speaker 2: some riffs about Costianos too, and we'll get to that
- 3:16Speaker 2: a little later. But they feel like those things need
- 3:19Speaker 2: to be cleaned up. And if that's the case, good
- 3:22Speaker 2: for the Phillies for trading a really good player. If
- 3:25Speaker 2: they truly felt like it was going to be an issue.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I like strong Man. I've always liked him, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 4: I like hitting lefties. I remember facing him a bunch
- 3:35Speaker 4: of times and He was very hard to figure out.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Man.
- 3:37Speaker 4: It was like, oh, it looks so good and then whoop.
- 3:40Speaker 4: I mean, if I'm any other team finding a way,
- 3:42Speaker 4: if I know about a guy like this, god, I
- 3:44Speaker 4: would you know, trade him for who womever? But another
- 3:48Speaker 4: great left handed pitcher. Ye know, what's what's going on
- 3:52Speaker 4: there in Philly town? Man, There's there's a lot of
- 3:54Speaker 4: little rifts going on, whether it's with coaching staff or
- 3:56Speaker 4: brass or whatever. You know, I don't know, there's got
- 4:01Speaker 4: to be more to this story, like you said, because
- 4:03Speaker 4: there's always there's always something else. And you know, if
- 4:06Speaker 4: Strom's happy, okay. But you know, he was a nice
- 4:09Speaker 4: little fit in there in Philly, and I think a
- 4:11Speaker 4: lot of people liked him when he came in. And
- 4:13Speaker 4: you know, it wasn't gonna overpower you. But the dude
- 4:15Speaker 4: that found a way to get outs in my opinion.
- 4:20Speaker 1: And I know Strom can get out lefties and righty's
- 4:22Speaker 1: and he is one of the what was it, it's
- 4:26Speaker 1: him Alvarado and who am I missing from the left side?
- 4:30Speaker 3: Tanner Banks?
- 4:31Speaker 1: Tanner Banks. Yeah, so that those are the three. So
- 4:33Speaker 1: you still got two there. And remember they just replaced him.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I mean in terms of important arms, high leverage arms
- 4:42Speaker 1: in the bullpen. They just signed Brad Keller. Brad Keller
- 4:45Speaker 1: had a sick year with the Cups or if you're
- 4:48Speaker 1: buying that, you know, two years, twenty two million. It's
- 4:51Speaker 1: not like they're losing a guy in the bullpen that
- 4:53Speaker 1: they feel like, you know, they can trust and not
- 4:56Speaker 1: replacing him. They are bringing in a guy who is
- 4:59Speaker 1: supposed to be e a very solid, high leverage reliever.
- 5:02Speaker 1: When you're paying eleven million dollars per season for a
- 5:04Speaker 1: reliever like that, So Kratz, I know they're not the
- 5:07Speaker 1: same guy, but one probably led to the next, right, Okay,
- 5:12Speaker 1: we just spent eleven million bucks on brad Keller. We've
- 5:15Speaker 1: been thinking about trade and Strom. We've got another guy
- 5:17Speaker 1: here that we feel comfortable with our circle of trust,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and now boom, we trade Strom.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's one of those things that
- 5:25Speaker 2: probably had the trade kind of in the works, and
- 5:28Speaker 2: then you sit there and go, we can't trade a
- 5:31Speaker 2: legit reliever like this until we know we have somebody
- 5:34Speaker 2: replace them. And ultimately, at the end of a season
- 5:37Speaker 2: where you lose in the NLDS to the eventual World
- 5:40Speaker 2: Series winners, you probably figure out, Okay, well, what exactly
- 5:45Speaker 2: did we need to do more of to be successful?
- 5:48Speaker 2: And maybe they felt like they needed more to be
- 5:52Speaker 2: more right handed in the bullpen. That's what I heard
- 5:54Speaker 2: from different people with the Phillies that maybe a little
- 5:57Speaker 2: bit more right handedness in the bullpen. Not saying that
- 6:01Speaker 2: just because ta Oskar hit the home run and that's
- 6:03Speaker 2: why they traded Strom, but it's it's a case where
- 6:08Speaker 2: I don't think I don't think topper Rob Thompson, the
- 6:11Speaker 2: manager of the Phillies, deploys his bullpen as a matchup
- 6:17Speaker 2: only base like this guy kills righty's. He you know,
- 6:20Speaker 2: he loves to have and that's what they have down there,
- 6:22Speaker 2: guys who have success against righty's and lefties, And it's
- 6:26Speaker 2: more of who do you fit against in the lineup
- 6:30Speaker 2: and maybe being a little bit more right handed heavy
- 6:33Speaker 2: is where they wanted to be because they went into
- 6:34Speaker 2: the playoffs last year with two lefties and Strom and
- 6:37Speaker 2: Tanner Banks and now this year, all health being the same,
- 6:42Speaker 2: they will go into the playoffs if they make the
- 6:45Speaker 2: playoffs with two lefties and Alvarado and taaror Banks.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Yep, and Kansas City has gotten a lot better the
- 6:52Speaker 1: last couple of weeks too, so credit to them get
- 6:55Speaker 1: a nice piece for the bullpen. Also, they locked up
- 6:58Speaker 1: mikel Garcia long term and bought out a couple of
- 7:01Speaker 1: years of free agency. Why you don't love what they've
- 7:03Speaker 1: done so far?
- 7:05Speaker 3: Is it enough?
- 7:06Speaker 2: And everyone's gonna say the Ale Central is winnable. These
- 7:09Speaker 2: are little pieces that will be cool if nothing else happens.
- 7:14Speaker 2: They will be great if they get if they're able
- 7:17Speaker 2: to take care of that slug and they need the slug.
- 7:22Speaker 2: And it's tough to find slug in Kaufman. Like you
- 7:25Speaker 2: can find dudes that hit dingers, but if you find
- 7:28Speaker 2: dudes that hit dingers in Kaufman, now we're talking a
- 7:30Speaker 2: different level. Even more so that doubles hitter, the doubles
- 7:35Speaker 2: hitter that fits into the Royals lineup without punching out
- 7:40Speaker 2: because you can't. You can't sacrifice and be like, okay,
- 7:43Speaker 2: everybody hit dingers now and they become, you know, even
- 7:45Speaker 2: middle of the pack strikeout their team. That was first
- 7:49Speaker 2: or second with the Blue Jays the whole year in strikeouts.
- 7:52Speaker 2: The issue was they weren't driving the ball. They got
- 7:55Speaker 2: to figure out how to drive the ball, and they
- 7:56Speaker 2: got to put somebody in that lineup that enables other
- 7:59Speaker 2: hitters like Bob with Vinnie Pasquentino, mikel Garcia to be
- 8:04Speaker 2: able to drive the ball. They have to have somebody
- 8:06Speaker 2: that looks afret, looks scary in that lineup so that
- 8:10Speaker 2: those other guys who do have power get pitches to
- 8:13Speaker 2: drive or else it's just corners. You got to take
- 8:16Speaker 2: your singles from all those from all those elite, all
- 8:20Speaker 2: star level hitters, because you're never you never need to
- 8:24Speaker 2: really throw to them because the bottom part of your
- 8:26Speaker 2: order or even like five six seven part of your
- 8:29Speaker 2: order doesn't do enough damage.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And maybe one more big boy bat I mean Mike
- 8:37Speaker 1: g in the chests like Donovan or can tell Marte
- 8:40Speaker 1: to case next book at Scott Now that now we're
- 8:42Speaker 1: talking right, Because then you add Isaac Collins, Lane Thomas.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You've got some of the superstars in place in Wit
- 8:49Speaker 1: and Michael Garcia, butting Star Salvi's there, Vinnie p Jackkags.
- 8:54Speaker 1: You get one more, you start to feel really really good.
- 8:57Speaker 1: In my opinion, one more like that. Either of those
- 9:00Speaker 1: two guys are are huge. Cantello is a superstar. Brendan
- 9:04Speaker 1: Donovan is an All Star level play player. I don't
- 9:06Speaker 1: know if he's made a team yet, but he's that
- 9:08Speaker 1: level player. So either way, Todd fother that would be
- 9:11Speaker 1: a massive pickup for Case if they're wieling and dealing
- 9:14Speaker 1: right now, and it's easier to do that for them
- 9:16Speaker 1: generally than hit free agency.
- 9:19Speaker 3: One hundred percent.
- 9:20Speaker 4: I think the ongoing theme, as you've said one hundred
- 9:23Speaker 4: different ways, one hundred different times, is if they can
- 9:25Speaker 4: get one more big bat, and I think that's for
- 9:27Speaker 4: every single team. But yes, Marte, I've seen one of
- 9:32Speaker 4: the furthest policy's ever hit. When I played against him
- 9:35Speaker 4: the one year right handed.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I was like, whoa, this guy's for real.
- 9:38Speaker 4: So yeah, as long as you're doing something, teams are
- 9:41Speaker 4: doing stuff and everybody's like, oh well, oh okay, well
- 9:44Speaker 4: this and that what they're they're thinking, They're trying to
- 9:47Speaker 4: do some other things. Yeah, there's some bad trades, of course,
- 9:49Speaker 4: but ultimately it seems like the same team's over and
- 9:52Speaker 4: over are trying to get things done, that's all, And
- 9:55Speaker 4: you come, I'm happy with that.
- 9:57Speaker 3: What are the Royals okay? Trading?
- 9:59Speaker 2: Obviously, we have Rex Huddler on the other day and
- 10:01Speaker 2: he was talking about No, you can't have Cole Reagan's
- 10:03Speaker 2: like Cole Reagan's just throwing game on of a playoff series.
- 10:07Speaker 2: You can't have him. What do the Diamondbacks want? They
- 10:10Speaker 2: want pitching. The Royals have been willing to trade some
- 10:13Speaker 2: of their pitchers. JJ Piccolo said there's one guy who's
- 10:18Speaker 2: untouchable and he didn't name it, but you can pretty
- 10:21Speaker 2: much figure out who it is for the Royals rotation.
- 10:23Speaker 2: But if you are able to help the Diamondbacks out
- 10:26Speaker 2: with their pitching need, and you're able to add at
- 10:29Speaker 2: Katel Marte, people will be like, oh, you know, there's
- 10:32Speaker 2: a little we're worried about his you know, his makeup,
- 10:35Speaker 2: the things that happened. This is why you kept Salvador
- 10:40Speaker 2: Perez on this roster. His value is getting the most
- 10:44Speaker 2: out of every player, Latin players, American players, pitchers, position players,
- 10:50Speaker 2: because he sets an example of I don't care what's
- 10:53Speaker 2: going on around you. I'm going to be out on
- 10:56Speaker 2: the field. I might not catch one hundred and fifty
- 10:58Speaker 2: games anymore like when crats my backup, but I'm gonna
- 11:02Speaker 2: be out there one hundred and sixty games because that's
- 11:05Speaker 2: what you do when a team pays you. His His
- 11:07Speaker 2: focus is I'm a Kansas City royal, You're a Kansas
- 11:10Speaker 2: City Royal. We're gonna go out there and play. Bobby
- 11:14Speaker 2: Wit can be a great example to that. But Bobby Wits,
- 11:16Speaker 2: you know, would be much younger than a could tell
- 11:18Speaker 2: Marte he's a budding superstar. But Salvi has that like
- 11:23Speaker 2: the Don the Godfather type of focus for a lot
- 11:28Speaker 2: of Latin players that I think could tell Marte would
- 11:32Speaker 2: fall into that. He would enjoy that. He would definitely
- 11:35Speaker 2: he would feed off of that. And you're automatically getting
- 11:38Speaker 2: you know, a guy who can be in the MVP
- 11:41Speaker 2: consideration year in and year out.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Who is the untouchable for k C. Is it Reagan's
- 11:48Speaker 1: because he's their best arm? Okay, just make it?
- 11:51Speaker 3: I think yeah.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I mean it sounds like, you know, Waka is gonna
- 11:57Speaker 1: be there. Chris Boubage could get down. I mean he
- 12:01Speaker 1: was kind of a bust for them for a bit
- 12:02Speaker 1: and then he broke out last year. But maybe they
- 12:04Speaker 1: sell high on Boo bitch. I would seth Lugo didn't
- 12:08Speaker 1: have as good as a year last year. Noah Cameron
- 12:11Speaker 1: had a breakout rookie season, A little old or was
- 12:13Speaker 1: he twenty six, which you could look at as a
- 12:15Speaker 1: good or a bad thing. You should get some prime
- 12:17Speaker 1: years of him at a really cheap rate. I don't
- 12:19Speaker 1: think they're going to be shopping someone like that. It
- 12:21Speaker 1: would be shopping someone that's got a little cash to
- 12:23Speaker 1: them and then that can offset. Say if it was Arizona,
- 12:27Speaker 1: and it doesn't sound like they're necessarily the front runners,
- 12:29Speaker 1: but that would be a deal. If they could figure out.
- 12:32Speaker 3: A can tell, they would be the AL set.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I love when we talk about this kind of stuff
- 12:36Speaker 2: because it's like, well, what does that make that team?
- 12:39Speaker 2: It makes that team the favorite in the American League
- 12:42Speaker 2: if they keep Cole Reagan's in the American League Central,
- 12:46Speaker 2: I'm sorry, in the American League Central. To me, it
- 12:48Speaker 2: makes them the favorite when it happens. Obviously, Detroit has
- 12:52Speaker 2: to do some stuff. Obviously Detroit still has Scooball, but
- 12:56Speaker 2: the Central. That's why the Royals started pushing. Yes, they
- 12:59Speaker 2: started pushing some of these contracts because one they signed
- 13:03Speaker 2: Bobby Witt. They want a new stadium. I get that,
- 13:07Speaker 2: but they know that look at what the AL Central
- 13:10Speaker 2: is right now. The White Sox are down, the Tigers,
- 13:14Speaker 2: are you know they've had a good resurgence, but are
- 13:17Speaker 2: they willing to push all in?
- 13:18Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 13:19Speaker 2: The Guardians are never looking to push in, So it's
- 13:23Speaker 2: an opportunity for them to possibly take this division with
- 13:28Speaker 2: one move. That move will be expensive, but it's not
- 13:30Speaker 2: like you're getting a one year rental, which the Royals
- 13:32Speaker 2: hate one year rentals. They beginning to tell Martez think
- 13:36Speaker 2: for five more seasons, either four or five more seasons.
- 13:39Speaker 2: I'm not sure what his contract at a great price too.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm with you. Hey, last thing on the Royals
- 13:47Speaker 1: Phillies situation, back to what Todd father was talking about,
- 13:52Speaker 1: because it seems like you guys are on opposite ends here.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Todd Fithers like, hey, there's a little bit of beef
- 13:55Speaker 1: here with some players in Philly, and Crats is like, man,
- 13:58Speaker 1: it's not that much, right, Well, let's up the other
- 14:00Speaker 1: part of this. Nick Castianos is probably going to get
- 14:03Speaker 1: traded or he'll definitely get released. If not, right, he's
- 14:06Speaker 1: not going to be with the Phillies next year. And
- 14:09Speaker 1: you know, we keep getting little bits and pieces. So
- 14:14Speaker 1: the Philly Show, our show talked about it and Jess,
- 14:17Speaker 1: who's his wife, right, has been commenting on some things
- 14:21Speaker 1: on socials. Just just chime in on a little bit
- 14:24Speaker 1: of action here and there, So I mean, gabble it.
- 14:27Speaker 1: You kind of run point here and throw stuff up
- 14:30Speaker 1: on the screen and we'll react to it, and then
- 14:31Speaker 1: we can show a clip too. But I'll follow your lead.
- 14:34Speaker 1: So I can read some tweets here. My computer is
- 14:37Speaker 1: a little tiny today for me to read them, so
- 14:39Speaker 1: if you want to bring them up, I can rack
- 14:42Speaker 1: them for you. We can start, I think with the
- 14:44Speaker 1: Philly Show where Todd Zelecki said the Castianos trade is
- 14:49Speaker 1: more likely to come later in the off season despite
- 14:51Speaker 1: the Phillies seemingly having his replacement in place, and that
- 14:55Speaker 1: is dolely scarcia. By the way, I've heard people say
- 14:58Speaker 1: I'm not interested in Nick Stianos at any price, mentioning
- 15:01Speaker 1: the defense is a big reason why. So we saw
- 15:04Speaker 1: that from the Phillies Show, and I believe there was
- 15:08Speaker 1: a comment there from Jess after that, but also will
- 15:11Speaker 1: show John Stoleness only one player had an issue with
- 15:13Speaker 1: Rob Thompson the last four years. You'll have to forgive
- 15:15Speaker 1: me if I don't buy the spin that the Castianos
- 15:18Speaker 1: camp will put on all of this. He's not a
- 15:19Speaker 1: good player. He talked his way out of town? Is
- 15:23Speaker 1: that a Philly guy, Kratz.
- 15:25Speaker 2: I didn't see the name of who it was Stonemas,
- 15:29Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 15:32Speaker 1: I don't know prout right now. Finally, Oh, a news
- 15:37Speaker 1: producer and reporter who as a Phillies He covers Phillies, Eagles,
- 15:42Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. He's a writer. Jess Castianos
- 15:45Speaker 1: replied to Lol. And then there's one more here, I
- 15:50Speaker 1: think from a fan who said, I hope that once
- 15:53Speaker 1: where Nick is playing is settled, he can go on
- 15:55Speaker 1: a podcast or something and tell his side of things,
- 15:57Speaker 1: because a lot of what is being said about him
- 15:59Speaker 1: and had this being handled doesn't pass the sniff test.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Jess Nick's wife posted, Oh, you guys would love it.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Lol.
- 16:08Speaker 1: It sounds like a future Nick Castiano's appearance on Foul
- 16:12Speaker 1: Territory to go over what happens. That is what the
- 16:15Speaker 1: show is for when needed.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Look, Nick Castianos is outs above average, all the range
- 16:24Speaker 2: stuff everything. It's not very nice to Nick. You also
- 16:29Speaker 2: want to look up on Baseball Reference how many airs
- 16:31Speaker 2: Nick has in the outfield.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Zero.
- 16:35Speaker 2: You also want to look up the last two seasons.
- 16:37Speaker 2: When Scott Braun says the Phillies are a regular season team,
- 16:43Speaker 2: one of two guys that shows up in the playoffs
- 16:45Speaker 2: for the Phillies on a year in and year out basis,
- 16:49Speaker 2: it's Nick Costiano. So just be careful everybody. When you're like,
- 16:53Speaker 2: I want to run this guy out of town. You
- 16:55Speaker 2: know his defense and baseball is gonna be like, oh
- 16:57Speaker 2: his defense is this. Go to a Philly game. Look
- 17:02Speaker 2: where he plays. Look where they have him played. Is
- 17:05Speaker 2: that because they don't think his range is good?
- 17:08Speaker 3: Maybe?
- 17:09Speaker 2: But understand that the range and the outs above average
- 17:12Speaker 2: is only a math equation that is set up based
- 17:16Speaker 2: on where the defender starts and where the ball ends up.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Is he winning a goal? Glove and right field? That's
- 17:24Speaker 2: not what I'm saying. But do the eye test. Do
- 17:27Speaker 2: the eye test to knicks defense and understand what he's bringing.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Maybe right field might not be the place, but I
- 17:35Speaker 2: guarantee you I can name a lot of players that
- 17:38Speaker 2: played left field before all this outs above average and
- 17:41Speaker 2: range factor and everything were really as as public and
- 17:46Speaker 2: as you know, mainstream as it is now. Because everybody
- 17:49Speaker 2: leans right onto it. They're like, oh yeah, yeah, look
- 17:52Speaker 2: look at this terrible, terrible, terrible. Go watch him play,
- 17:56Speaker 2: Go watch him play, see where he starts for every play.
- 17:59Speaker 2: And then I went you to make your own evaluation.
- 18:01Speaker 2: If you think he's as quote everybody wants to jump
- 18:04Speaker 2: on board as terrible as he is because I don't
- 18:08Speaker 2: believe it.
- 18:08Speaker 4: I agree, I agree totally. You you are spot on
- 18:13Speaker 4: with everything. And they you know, they always talk about
- 18:15Speaker 4: defense and this and that. You know about someone's highlight reels.
- 18:19Speaker 4: He gets to these balls and he's a great player.
- 18:22Speaker 4: He can hit the ball, and you know, he's like
- 18:24Speaker 4: anybody else. They'll go through spurts where they're struggling. That's
- 18:27Speaker 4: baseball in the nutshell. As you get older, that's going
- 18:28Speaker 4: to happen. I think he's a phenomenal player. You know,
- 18:32Speaker 4: people are going to say something about him speaking up.
- 18:34Speaker 4: That's been him. He speaks up about things, and there's
- 18:36Speaker 4: nothing wrong with that. You know that that's just part
- 18:40Speaker 4: of his mo He's going to tell you how he feels.
- 18:42Speaker 4: And if there's a problem, if it's not going to
- 18:44Speaker 4: get solved, he's going to tell you, so so be it.
- 18:46Speaker 4: If he can't handle that, then move on. But he
- 18:49Speaker 4: is he's a great player. You know, he came up
- 18:51Speaker 4: as a third baseman. He was good there too as well.
- 18:54Speaker 4: Put him in right field. I there's two types of
- 18:57Speaker 4: players there. There's I call him those five o'clock hitter,
- 19:00Speaker 4: the seven o'clock hitters. Five o'clock hitters. You don't want.
- 19:02Speaker 4: You want those guys when the lights come on and
- 19:04Speaker 4: they shine bright. He's been doing that for a long
- 19:06Speaker 4: time now.
- 19:07Speaker 2: And he also they're gonna we're gonna get We're gonna
- 19:11Speaker 2: get roasted. You're gonna get roasted from from Philly fans.
- 19:13Speaker 2: They're like, well, did you watch every game when he
- 19:16Speaker 2: would swing at the very first pitch and everything?
- 19:18Speaker 3: I did it too. We all like that.
- 19:21Speaker 2: That is the that's the beauty of playing in a
- 19:23Speaker 2: major market. That in my opinion, I think Philly fans
- 19:27Speaker 2: still look at the batting average and when it's on
- 19:29Speaker 2: the board, they're like, what look at his batting average?
- 19:33Speaker 2: This guy stinks, Yo, this guy's go we gotta get
- 19:36Speaker 2: Nick out of here. I don't think you were saying
- 19:38Speaker 2: that in the twenty four playoffs when he was coming
- 19:41Speaker 2: up clutch, clutch, clutch in the playoffs and people would
- 19:44Speaker 2: be like, yo, well, I remember what about display in
- 19:47Speaker 2: the World Series when he popped out on a slider
- 19:49Speaker 2: down and a way against Ryan Presley to lose the
- 19:52Speaker 2: World Series for US. Obviously, you can you can pick
- 19:56Speaker 2: you can pick a million different videos of a guy
- 19:58Speaker 2: chasing out of his own. The reality is Nick is
- 20:01Speaker 2: somewhere in between a twenty million dollar player and somebody
- 20:05Speaker 2: who should be released. And I think when you play
- 20:09Speaker 2: in a city and you speak your mind, sometimes everybody
- 20:13Speaker 2: thinks you better be hitting three hundred or you're not
- 20:18Speaker 2: a good player anymore because you opened your mouth. And
- 20:20Speaker 2: that's why I think sometimes players don't want to say things.
- 20:24Speaker 2: They don't want to you know, they don't want to
- 20:26Speaker 2: buck the system, they don't want to rock the boat.
- 20:30Speaker 2: The reality is, the best teams have people that are
- 20:33Speaker 2: willing to say things and step up, not just for
- 20:36Speaker 2: your own selfish ambition, but for the betterment of the team.
- 20:40Speaker 2: And I think Nick truly believed he should have been
- 20:43Speaker 2: a guy that was out there every single day, and
- 20:45Speaker 2: he strapped it up, he strapped it out. He came
- 20:47Speaker 2: up with like Manny Machado play. You know, they all
- 20:50Speaker 2: learned young. And we even had Nick on here talking
- 20:52Speaker 2: about well what does that mean? What does that mean
- 20:54Speaker 2: to play every day? He's like, it means everything, Like
- 20:56Speaker 2: sometimes you play at eighty percent because you should be
- 20:59Speaker 2: out there every single day. And when he got taken
- 21:01Speaker 2: out of the lineup, that was that was definitely something
- 21:04Speaker 2: that he you know, I think he didn't take it
- 21:08Speaker 2: like it hurt his feelings and he voiced his opinion.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Now he might leave, but I still think he's got
- 21:14Speaker 2: a lot of talk about meat on the bone. Somebody's
- 21:16Speaker 2: gonna get a guy who's gonna go out there every
- 21:18Speaker 2: single day. Might not play right field for you, but
- 21:21Speaker 2: he's gonna hit and he's gonna get some clutch hits.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Yeah, he's still a big league ballplayer for me. If
- 21:27Speaker 1: you're obsessed with defense and you want to leave him
- 21:29Speaker 1: out of there pretty frequently, that's fine. But I still
- 21:33Speaker 1: think he's got the chops. And just two quick comments
- 21:37Speaker 1: on this one. Which guy would you rather have in
- 21:41Speaker 1: the outfields? Tay Oscar Hernandez or Nick Castianos. Right, Castianos
- 21:45Speaker 1: doesn't cover as much ground, but he doesn't make the
- 21:47Speaker 1: mistakes that Taeo does.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Yeah, it'd say Nick Castianos.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Yes, Okay, So those guys are just working in two
- 21:55Speaker 1: different worlds right now in terms of how can I
- 21:58Speaker 1: look at that.
- 21:59Speaker 4: If you can hit, I'm taking you over, you know,
- 22:01Speaker 4: an they've both.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Had no tail over. Yeah, but they're I'm just saying
- 22:05Speaker 1: those two guys like there's a difference, but I just
- 22:08Speaker 1: don't think it's as much bit of a difference as
- 22:11Speaker 1: most of the public views.
- 22:12Speaker 2: There's also a difference in playing left field and right field.
- 22:15Speaker 2: I was crying for tay Oscar to play left field
- 22:19Speaker 2: last year. I thought they were doing him a disservice
- 22:22Speaker 2: because they had Confordo, who they just kept putting out there,
- 22:25Speaker 2: and they could have possibly upgraded in right field and
- 22:30Speaker 2: pushed Tayo where I think left field. Not to get
- 22:33Speaker 2: into the intricacies of it, but left field you can
- 22:36Speaker 2: mitigate a lot of the issues that right fielders are
- 22:39Speaker 2: getting dinged on the range and outs above average.
- 22:46Speaker 1: And then one more thing to comment on your batting
- 22:49Speaker 1: average situation. Do you guys know how many players hit
- 22:52Speaker 1: thrown three hundred or better this year internationally? No total
- 22:59Speaker 1: that hit three hundred better than When you say like,
- 23:01Speaker 1: because I agree, I still talk to plenty of fans
- 23:03Speaker 1: that watch the sport regularly and bring up batting average
- 23:06Speaker 1: so frequently like, oh, it isn't even it close to
- 23:08Speaker 1: three hundred. I'm like, bro, do you know how many
- 23:09Speaker 1: people hit three hundred in the big leagues this past season?
- 23:12Speaker 1: Give me a guest.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Guys this past season, I'm the National League was one.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I know that Trey Turner was less than.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Five seven total three hundred or better. Like Yondi Diaz
- 23:23Speaker 1: hit three hundred on the dot, Trey Turner three oh four,
- 23:27Speaker 1: Jeremy Paniea three oh four, George Springer three oh nine,
- 23:30Speaker 1: and we had three to eleven for Boba Schett and
- 23:32Speaker 1: Jacob Wilson and Judgy at three thirty one. That's it.
- 23:35Speaker 4: We had. Those guys had injuries too, so they missed
- 23:38Speaker 4: some time as well.
- 23:39Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean they were still hitters. But my
- 23:42Speaker 1: point is qualified, that's fucking how many people hit three
- 23:46Speaker 1: hundred anymore? Like relax when people are oh, it isn't
- 23:49Speaker 1: it you know even to eighty right the league average?
- 23:53Speaker 1: I think right now, what is it? Krats two forty
- 23:55Speaker 1: five or something like that, I'd still be part of
- 23:58Speaker 1: average most teams it was, Yeah, it.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Would be a trickle lower and it definitely is in
- 24:03Speaker 2: on base percentage. And Nick had it down year this year,
- 24:06Speaker 2: there's no doubt. But you're also talking about a guy
- 24:09Speaker 2: who can contribute at a higher level than what he
- 24:13Speaker 2: has in the last two years.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Nobody's gonna deny that.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Nobody's and you know, my Philly Twitter account is going
- 24:19Speaker 2: to get get you know, roasted for saying that. But
- 24:24Speaker 2: the reality is you do want the best player out there.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Just be careful when you ask for an upgrade because
- 24:31Speaker 2: the grass isn't always greener. That's all I'm gonna say.
- 24:34Speaker 2: With getting rid of Nick Costianos.
- 24:43Speaker 1: The news is fast and furious today, let's get to
- 24:46Speaker 1: a manual class popping back up in the news. And
- 24:49Speaker 1: this story came out right before the show started, so
- 24:52Speaker 1: I did not read the full article yet, but we
- 24:54Speaker 1: like to bring it as soon as we can, and
- 24:55Speaker 1: I'll give you bits and pieces. The article from Evan
- 24:58Speaker 1: Drelik and Zach Maizel and The Athletic is titled before
- 25:02Speaker 1: Betting Probe MLB caught a manual Class A breaking cell
- 25:08Speaker 1: phone rules built for the sign stealing era, and it
- 25:12Speaker 1: talks about how Evan and Zach learned that MLB had
- 25:16Speaker 1: reprimanded Class A for impermissible cell phone use at least
- 25:20Speaker 1: once before knowledge of the entire betting scandal that came out.
- 25:26Speaker 1: And we know all about that story. We've done plenty
- 25:30Speaker 1: of videos on that, so you can look back. I mean,
- 25:32Speaker 1: he was involved allegedly, right, there's court case coming up
- 25:36Speaker 1: in helping betters on certain pitches that he was manipulating
- 25:42Speaker 1: to win bets. So the indictment here does cite an
- 25:48Speaker 1: instance of Luis Ortiz using his cell phone. He's the
- 25:52Speaker 1: other guy in that case, right or Te's and Class
- 25:54Speaker 1: A both will be in front of a court at
- 25:58Speaker 1: some point soon. But it was a Class A who
- 26:02Speaker 1: I guess apparently was using his cell phone. I'm kind
- 26:04Speaker 1: of learning this stuff as we go, But thoughts on
- 26:06Speaker 1: this one, guys, and could we show the other Evandralic
- 26:09Speaker 1: tweet or I can read it because I think that's
- 26:11Speaker 1: important context here, I.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Mean, while we bring that up, Scott, Like I, when
- 26:19Speaker 2: I read the court case or when I read the indictment,
- 26:23Speaker 2: it said Class A minutes before going on to the
- 26:27Speaker 2: field made a phone call too. And I forget the
- 26:31Speaker 2: person's name, but made a phone call. I don't and
- 26:35Speaker 2: I didn't look more into it when I first read that,
- 26:37Speaker 2: I was like you mean minutes before he went out
- 26:41Speaker 2: to be on the field in like the sixth inning,
- 26:44Speaker 2: or did we mean like he had his cell phone
- 26:48Speaker 2: in the bullpen? Like I feel like we kind of
- 26:52Speaker 2: heard this, but then it kind of got glossed over.
- 26:55Speaker 2: So for this to come out to japers days, come.
- 26:59Speaker 1: On, I'll give you a little more here before Todd
- 27:01Speaker 1: Father time in so Evan Drelik said, MLB kept hearing
- 27:04Speaker 1: player complaints about the restrictions on cell phone usage that
- 27:08Speaker 1: was put in for sign stealing, so the league agreed
- 27:11Speaker 1: with the union before this past season to a change.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Cell phones were now allowed in clubhouses during games for
- 27:18Speaker 1: personal use. That wasn't the case because we had sign
- 27:22Speaker 1: stealing happening illegally within the game itself. We had issues
- 27:28Speaker 1: with phones being used in the past. So they were like, hey,
- 27:32Speaker 1: you can't use your phone during games, Todd Father. Here's
- 27:34Speaker 1: the problem. Players are like, yo, I might need to
- 27:37Speaker 1: use my phone for personal use during a game. There's
- 27:39Speaker 1: a lot of shit going on during life, and sometimes
- 27:41Speaker 1: the game can take three four hours. I mean, I
- 27:44Speaker 1: know they're shorter now so we're on an average too
- 27:46Speaker 1: and change, but you know what I'm saying, it could
- 27:48Speaker 1: be that day or somebody sick or whatever it is,
- 27:50Speaker 1: and you're not in the game and you need it,
- 27:52Speaker 1: so it starts to get dicey. Real life interferes with
- 27:55Speaker 1: what's going on with them trying to police sign stealing,
- 27:58Speaker 1: so they pushed that back. But then I guess class
- 28:01Speaker 1: they got caught before the betting probe doing other things
- 28:05Speaker 1: that were not following the league.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Rules the proto call, and and he got caught for
- 28:11Speaker 2: peds earlier in his career. So if we're talking about
- 28:13Speaker 2: all the things he got caught for, that's just a
- 28:16Speaker 2: lot that to it.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Thought.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Listen, I remember coming out of a game when they
- 28:19Speaker 4: first started doing that. You know, I got subbed in sixth,
- 28:22Speaker 4: seventh inning for a pinch hit or whatever. Going back
- 28:24Speaker 4: and trying to get changed, there was a guy in
- 28:26Speaker 4: there looking every little movie you did, and it was
- 28:28Speaker 4: it was kind of like you're like, come home, man,
- 28:30Speaker 4: I can't just take a peek at myself home, but
- 28:33Speaker 4: you don't.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Want to do it.
- 28:34Speaker 4: But yeah, if if he was doing this before games
- 28:37Speaker 4: and checking his phone and talking to people before even
- 28:42Speaker 4: before he went out there, man, it's tough because you know,
- 28:45Speaker 4: this just shows you about what was really happening, and
- 28:48Speaker 4: how big of this was and how problematic this was
- 28:52Speaker 4: for him. So oh man, it just seems there's more
- 28:55Speaker 4: turns and twists as we move forward here into close
- 29:00Speaker 4: to the baseball season.
- 29:03Speaker 1: How do you handle this krats in general, the cell
- 29:06Speaker 1: phone situation during games, because you know, I know some
- 29:09Speaker 1: fans are going to be watching this and go put
- 29:11Speaker 1: your fucking phone down for three hours. It's not like
- 29:14Speaker 1: they're sitting in the dugout with this. But can you
- 29:17Speaker 1: take us through the everyday nois of a major league
- 29:20Speaker 1: game and how sometimes you know, yeah, ship hops up,
- 29:24Speaker 1: that gets real. Your kid's got a one oh two
- 29:26Speaker 1: fevers in the hospital and you're out of the game
- 29:29Speaker 1: now and you want to get an update from your wife.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Like stuff like that happens pretty frequently. There's a lot
- 29:35Speaker 1: of players in the big leagues tell me I'm wrong.
- 29:38Speaker 3: No, that happens, one hundred percent. No, that happens.
- 29:41Speaker 2: I got called out of a spring training game one
- 29:43Speaker 2: time and somebody called the club, or my wife had
- 29:46Speaker 2: called the clubby and the club he came and got
- 29:48Speaker 2: me off the field, and you know, my son was
- 29:51Speaker 2: going into the hospital. This is back in like two
- 29:53Speaker 2: thousand and nine or ten, I forget.
- 29:55Speaker 3: But.
- 29:56Speaker 2: I would also be on the camp, the side of
- 29:59Speaker 2: the camp of get off your phone, like I don't
- 30:02Speaker 2: need you to be on your phone at work. Like
- 30:04Speaker 2: people who say, well, I need to be on my
- 30:06Speaker 2: cell phone are probably not that productive at work. Like
- 30:10Speaker 2: if you're always on your cell phone, I think there's
- 30:15Speaker 2: issues with that. But I also think in the middle
- 30:17Speaker 2: of a game, I don't think there's a lot that
- 30:19Speaker 2: you need to be on your phone. For the cases
- 30:20Speaker 2: you're talking about. Yes, I'll remember the late Jeremy Gonzalez
- 30:25Speaker 2: with an I. He was a pitcher. He was in
- 30:27Speaker 2: Triple A. He was trying to we were playing in Syracuse.
- 30:31Speaker 2: He was trying to get over. I think he went
- 30:33Speaker 2: to Korea or Japan. I'm not sure, but part way
- 30:35Speaker 2: through the season he was pitching. He would start. He
- 30:39Speaker 2: would come in after every single inning he pulled his
- 30:42Speaker 2: cell phone out, and I remember it because I'm like, man,
- 30:44Speaker 2: that's a big cell phone. All I had was a
- 30:46Speaker 2: flip phone at the time, and he's.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Like, I got to back it, yelling at it. I'm
- 30:51Speaker 3: yelling at something. Put it down. He'd go back out
- 30:55Speaker 3: and I was like, is he is he gonna do
- 30:58Speaker 3: that again? They go, Bro, you gotta come up here.
- 31:00Speaker 3: He's gonna yell it again next.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Inning, between innings, yell, yelled, yelling, whoever. He was yelling
- 31:05Speaker 2: at every single start. It was like ritual for him.
- 31:09Speaker 2: He was on his phone. I was like, it's maybe
- 31:11Speaker 2: a little bit too much. I like, I don't think
- 31:14Speaker 2: guys need to be on their cell phones. I have
- 31:16Speaker 2: a hard time, besides those emergencies, thinking you need to
- 31:20Speaker 2: be on your phone during a game. That's even if
- 31:23Speaker 2: it's a four hour game. Sorry, Like that's you, that's
- 31:26Speaker 2: your workday.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Right, So basically, you know you have the monitors, right,
- 31:31Speaker 1: I think they The article says there's three of them
- 31:33Speaker 1: now that are at games that are making sure that
- 31:36Speaker 1: there's no sign stealing.
- 31:38Speaker 2: There's one in the there's one in the video room.
- 31:40Speaker 2: There's one usually in the batting cages, which kind of
- 31:43Speaker 2: like connect the clubhouse, dugout video room, and then there's
- 31:47Speaker 2: one up in the clubhouse.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Okay, so with all of that, I mean, this might
- 31:52Speaker 1: already be happening. It's Hey, I've got an emergency situation
- 31:56Speaker 1: I'm dealing with. Can I grab my phone and go
- 31:59Speaker 1: off to the side and make or something's okay. Yeah,
- 32:01Speaker 1: that's like, let's just have the human element here. This
- 32:05Speaker 1: is the human element.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Yeah, totally that we have.
- 32:08Speaker 1: I agree. I don't know enough about it, honestly, I'm
- 32:11Speaker 1: kind of learning as we go. It just sounds like,
- 32:13Speaker 1: you know, they were already on Class a's case, and
- 32:16Speaker 1: I mean the article it's long, so I just didn't
- 32:18Speaker 1: get to all of it. But you've got people in
- 32:20Speaker 1: there like, yeah, I think if someone's violating federal law
- 32:23Speaker 1: on facing jail time, they're not too concerned about MLB's
- 32:27Speaker 1: little rules about cell phones. So this is just an
- 32:30Speaker 1: outlier case. This guy is a rule breaker in the
- 32:34Speaker 1: past with certain things, and now an alleged law breaker
- 32:38Speaker 1: on a very big case that I'm sure is not
- 32:40Speaker 1: the last time I'm worried to cover
