- 0:05Millary Condon, that's who. Welcome.
- 0:06It's Millary Condon on a Tuesday.
- 0:09The Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent Condon and Ken Miller for
- 0:13the next couple of hours to talk sports with you.
- 0:15Thanks for tuning in here. Start your afternoon.
- 0:17Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:20I want to talk some baseball. Look forward to doing so.
- 0:22Cubs making some news, the Cardinals make him some news.
- 0:26Arnotto on his way out of Saint Louis State in the National
- 0:29League. But off to Arizona.
- 0:30Matt Snyder is a Hall of Fame voter.
- 0:32We'll do a little baseball as we creep our way to spring training
- 0:35and to the beginning of the MLB season.
- 0:38But to thought, what the heck? Why not Matt Snyder coming up
- 0:41here at the bottom of. The and in Indiana grad too.
- 0:44Well, which doesn't hurt The conversation is we'll preview
- 0:47his team. Have you seen what it cost to
- 0:49get into that building? Absolutely not.
- 0:51Surprised fans waited for this their entire lives and I hope
- 0:55they've been saving their money if indeed they're going to go
- 0:58anyways. So we will talk to Matt Snyder
- 1:01at the bottom of the hour then Elliott Clef on Iowa, Ben
- 1:04McCullum met the media this morning.
- 1:06We'll do that. We'll do transfer portal as it
- 1:08gets set to close. I think by by all accounts, I
- 1:12don't follow it as close to some do, but the people that do seem
- 1:15to think that the Kirk Ference and his team did pretty well in
- 1:18the in the board. We'll see.
- 1:20So we'll talk to Elliot Clough coming up at 1:00 and then we're
- 1:23going to head down to Lawrence. We'll catch up with Michael
- 1:26Swain, who is Swain Osen Bussey sounds right.
- 1:30I think it is right there's. One other in there, I think
- 1:33maybe before Dylan months. Yeah, good.
- 1:37Pull Dylan Months, Dylan Months, Michael Swain, Nick Olsen, Alec
- 1:42Bussey. Can he go before months though?
- 1:44I don't. Know if I could?
- 1:46I don't think so. Either could can you?
- 1:47No, I can't either. Anyways, these are the guys that
- 1:5024/7 sports running cyclonealert.com and we will.
- 1:54And now of course Michael Swain covering the Kansas side of
- 1:57things. So we'll get that as we look
- 2:00forward to 8:00 tonight. Maybe not the buzz of a regular
- 2:05season Kansas Iowa State game. Well, I think 2 components.
- 2:09I don't know. For whatever reason, in my mind
- 2:11it sticks that it feels like this first game is usually in
- 2:14Hilton. And it's usually 1000% first
- 2:16week in January. First week in January, it's in
- 2:18Hilton, and more times than not, it was also a big Monday game.
- 2:21That's true. So it had a spotlight kind of
- 2:23event to it. You're coming off the weekend,
- 2:25you're leading into that, you're going to have the nation
- 2:27watching, you're going to have kind of all these different
- 2:29components. And I know it's not true that it
- 2:32was always in Hilton, but it just had it does.
- 2:34It seemed like that, yes. You're.
- 2:35Right, that there was a lot of it and because I had the same
- 2:37thought as you, just not the same.
- 2:39Plus, Kansas is a Kansas I. Think that's the whole reason
- 2:42why, yes, you know, it's not the same.
- 2:44It's Kansas used to be a, you know, scalp you wanted to take
- 2:47every year. And sure, you still want to, but
- 2:50seemingly at this point, the way this team has been going over
- 2:53the last couple years and seems to be destined again this year,
- 2:56maybe it doesn't come with the cashier.
- 2:57It's still going to be tough. I mean, still a phenomenal place
- 2:59to play. Obviously a great environment.
- 3:02It'll be banged out tonight. It'll be loud, but Jayhawks fans
- 3:05want to beat Iowa State and knocked them off that unbeaten
- 3:07perch. They'd love to do that.
- 3:09We'll see if they're able to do that when we TuneIn at 8:00.
- 3:11And if you can't, and if you're in car, you can hear the game on
- 3:15the Iowa State Radio Network flagship tier 100.3, the bus
- 3:20down the hall from us. All right, so the wild card
- 3:23weekend is come and gone and wrapped up last night, despite
- 3:26CJ Stroud, who did everything he did to hand that game the
- 3:29Steelers. My God, is he bad.
- 3:30Holy mackerel is he awful. Fumble in the.
- 3:33Holy mackerel. Is he throwing the ball away?
- 3:37Fumble in it twice. I don't know what is going.
- 3:39It's almost I'm not saying he's throwing the game.
- 3:42He's not doing that. It's just it just looked like a
- 3:45fish out of water. Trent, of the 8 quarterbacks
- 3:47that are left, where's he rank? The right, the 8 quarterbacks
- 3:54that are left, number one is Josh Allen.
- 3:56Yes. Unequivocally.
- 3:58Yes. Stafford 2.
- 4:00Yes. #3 is Purdy OK, I'll go there #4.
- 4:10Williams, Caleb. Williams All right, I like the
- 4:14sounds of that. Do we put the two young guys
- 4:16together? Do we put we still got two young
- 4:19guys on the board 'cause they're both in the same draft?
- 4:21Do we put Knicks together with Drake Bay May ahead of them?
- 4:26No May ahead of them, may ahead of them.
- 4:28Then Knicks, then Stroud, then Darnold.
- 4:32No. No, no, see if I can see that,
- 4:35Nadia. Nope, not going.
- 4:37You're not going to put Dartald 8.
- 4:38No, I'm going to put him 7th. OK.
- 4:40But but not 8th see just drums awful.
- 4:43That defence is so good. Marx is a phenomenal running the
- 4:46football now obviously the Nico Collins news.
- 4:49We'll see how this goes. Short week and trying to get
- 4:51ready through not ready trying to get cleared for the
- 4:54concussion protocol because they're going to need him going
- 4:57into New England. Do you like the Texans in this
- 5:00spot with that defence and knowing that, yeah, New England
- 5:04looked really good last week, but I'm not sure Drake May
- 5:07looked great. I like the under.
- 5:09Doesn't this thing seem destined for 16/13?
- 5:12And what is the number? 40 1/2 New England favored by
- 5:15three. This thing has old school bare
- 5:18knuckle brawl type of feeling to it. 2 good defenses, an
- 5:22offensive line on both sides that have struggled.
- 5:25Yeah. The left tackle issues with the
- 5:27injuries that the Patriots have had this year and a couple other
- 5:28spots as well. Although what's his name Will?
- 5:30The kid from LSU, the 6th overall pick Will.
- 5:35Oh gosh, it's not Will McDonald. It's Will.
- 5:38It's Will Campbell. Will Campbell?
- 5:40Yes, but he's not banged up. Yeah, in and out of the line up.
- 5:42You're right. So he's dating.
- 5:46You've lost me already, OK? A college Who is this college
- 5:50quarterback who's this color back quarterback at LSU last
- 5:53year. He's dating his sister anyways,
- 5:57you know. You got the you, Mr. TMZ over
- 5:59there. Well, I'm on Twitter all the.
- 6:01Time. Yeah, that's.
- 6:01These things pop up. 2 bad off, 2 below average offensive.
- 6:07Lines, yes. Two young.
- 6:08Quarterbacks that, although I like New England's offensive
- 6:11line better. Drake Bay had a great season,
- 6:15tremendous. But you're also talking about
- 6:17now two really important pieces possibly out Gonzalez for the
- 6:22Patriots. Another one in concussion
- 6:23protocol, yes. And then Nico Collins, this
- 6:26thing has ugly written all over it.
- 6:29Way too early to take a look at the weather, but anticipate cold
- 6:31weather there. This is going to be who's going
- 6:33to make a play. It's going to probably look like
- 6:35the first 3/4 did last night. That was bad football.
- 6:38That was not as enjoyable as the first.
- 6:41What four games were of the NFL playoffs?
- 6:45The last two have stunk. It was not just enjoyable
- 6:48football to watch. It was bad.
- 6:49No, I'm with you. I'm with you.
- 6:52But you're right. At least we got off on the right
- 6:54foot and we had the. We've got that to kind of fall
- 6:56back on 'cause it was really good.
- 6:58But these last two, what did? Did you think you're watching
- 7:01Aaron Rodgers for the last time? I think so, yeah, I think so
- 7:04too. Yeah, I think so too.
- 7:06I think that that's probably, you know what it, you know what
- 7:09it dawned on me watching him last night when they would show
- 7:11close up his face, you know, understand or whatever.
- 7:14He's old. He's old, yes.
- 7:16Yeah. Doesn't matter how much
- 7:18different creams and different topical things that you're
- 7:21putting out yet you're you're stole, right?
- 7:23And Aaron Rodgers is old. He's old.
- 7:25He's really old. Look inside that helmet and look
- 7:27at Now he can go off and spend the rest of his life with his
- 7:30wife, who have yet to meet or see or.
- 7:33He's weird, yeah, that aside. He's not married.
- 7:37The weirdest? Yeah.
- 7:38Mr. TMZ again. I want to go first.
- 7:43This stretch at the end, Did you click it off right away?
- 7:46I know you do that. Yes, I did.
- 7:48I I went to, I went and found a hockey game.
- 7:50So they stuck around cameras on it the whole time as he's.
- 7:53Leaving. Oh, you know what?
- 7:54I did see some of that, yes. Really, nobody's coming up to
- 7:58talk to him. A few, a few, but yeah, yeah.
- 8:03If that was, if we had the same circumstance with so many other
- 8:06quarterbacks, has he burned so many bridges?
- 8:09Do people just across the NFL not like him?
- 8:12It, it was the thought that went through my mind last night
- 8:14because I thought that was incredibly odd.
- 8:16It wasn't a bunch of teammates coming over.
- 8:18It wasn't a bunch of guys from the there were a couple of
- 8:20Texans players. I, I saw a couple of them come
- 8:22over and give him a handshake. But for the most part, it was
- 8:25all right. Is that the way he wants it?
- 8:27Is that the persona that he has? No, leave me alone.
- 8:32Maybe that's a part of it too. I just found that incredibly
- 8:35interesting. I think still paints the picture
- 8:37of Heron Rodgers. We can think of him whatever
- 8:39way, it doesn't matter. Although his teammates love him.
- 8:41I mean, they said during the broadcast last night apparently,
- 8:44or I think it was last night was one of the, it was one of the
- 8:47Steelers games that his house is always open, you know, come over
- 8:50and play ping pong. I think they were.
- 8:52Talking. Does anybody actually take him
- 8:53up? I don't know.
- 8:53It's. True.
- 8:55Maybe his wife's cooking dinner, busy in the kitchen, doing
- 8:58whatever, making food for everybody.
- 9:00He's not married. Yeah, he says.
- 9:03He's a weird duck, right? I mean, who in their right mind
- 9:08locks themselves in a dark room right for days at a time?
- 9:14I mean, that would, I don't know.
- 9:15Anyway, he's a health player and the next time we hear his name
- 9:18when it comes to football related will be when he's
- 9:21inducted into the Hall of Fame as a first ballot.
- 9:23No doubt about it. Slam dunk Hall of Famer, because
- 9:26he is a phenomenal player, really is.
- 9:28This final chapter of his career though got the Steelers the play
- 9:34offs. Talk about Michael Jordan
- 9:36thinking that Wizards team of 40 wins, which was unthinkable, as
- 9:39awful as they were, coupled with the injury with The Jets.
- 9:43How much does it take to I I know once we get more further
- 9:48removed, yes, it it will it'll pale in comparison for the most
- 9:51part. I remember the highlights.
- 9:53I remember the great moments you bring up more often.
- 9:57Well, is he gonna ruin you know what we think about him and I
- 10:00rarely think that. But this, it does seem odd, and
- 10:03maybe it's just it's because it encapsulates all of it, the
- 10:07weirdness. Do we know he was a weird dude
- 10:09like this level a decade ago? No, we did.
- 10:12They ran him out of New York. We thought he was incredibly
- 10:16thoughtful person, aloof, right, different type of personality.
- 10:20But the way that he handled the Far situation I think elevated
- 10:23him in many people's mind. Far was made out to be the bad
- 10:26guy. Rogers was the good guy.
- 10:28There was a lot that I think not just the football playing here
- 10:31over the last three years, but just in general has tainted the
- 10:34image of Aaron Rodgers. Unlike many guys that we've seen
- 10:37before, he stayed too. Long, Trent.
- 10:39I think that's maybe how I'll kind of think about him.
- 10:42Is he? I mean, I would, I get it,
- 10:47sports aren't perfect, but wouldn't have been better if he
- 10:50would have ended as a Packer, right?
- 10:54Yeah. He was a Green Bay Packer.
- 10:55He wasn't either Jet. He wasn't a Steeler.
- 10:59He was a Packer, but he didn't have that opportunity.
- 11:03They wanted to move on, I guess, and they didn't like to draw.
- 11:05I think that what, what's the expression about the, the, the
- 11:09juice isn't worth the squeeze or whatever, because at the end of
- 11:12his days in Green Bay, is he or isn't he, you know, is he coming
- 11:16back? Is he going to play?
- 11:17It was turning into the far thing and they.
- 11:19Didn't want to deal, right? Absolutely.
- 11:21His final season in Green Bay, 26 touchdowns, 12 interceptions.
- 11:24They went 8 and 9 missed the play offs that season.
- 11:27And that was one of the first years that he threw double digit
- 11:31interceptions. Well, he was coming off of
- 11:33back-to-back MVP years, right? And then took that step back and
- 11:36he thought, well, this guy's just a you're removed from being
- 11:40the MVP. And how old was he then?
- 11:4140, He was 40 when he got to the Jetsons for his playing season.
- 11:45Well, the couple snaps that he got with The Jets before the
- 11:47Achilles, yeah, he was 40 in that season.
- 11:50I think there's more to it than just a guy that didn't play at
- 11:53his prior levels. There's a whole lot more to the
- 11:55conversation than just what we saw in the field.
- 11:58And that I think is why this is going to be a remembered more.
- 12:02We talked Michael Jordan. We don't talk about the Wizards
- 12:04very often. That's true.
- 12:05We don't. We talk about the great now.
- 12:07Brinson does. Well, of course, because he's
- 12:09weird. He's mine because he's a wilt
- 12:11guy. Wilt Chamberlain, Not even the
- 12:13best guy of his generation. That aside, that's a
- 12:15conversation. Maybe the summer time with Jimmy
- 12:17B, when we get him on before your retirement, we'll make that
- 12:19happen. And one more conversation with
- 12:21Bris, probably during the NBA playoffs.
- 12:23That's what we like to talk to. Jimmy B.
- 12:25The Jets got the Steelers to the playoffs.
- 12:29There's a little something. Do you remember the buzz around
- 12:31the 2023 season when he first got there?
- 12:35Was it a Monday night? Was it?
- 12:36Was it a? Prime time game came out with
- 12:38the American flag. Came out with the flag and boom,
- 12:414 snaps in three snaps in. There goes the Achilles and
- 12:44there goes The Jets season and he came back last year and then
- 12:48a new coach comes and they run him out of town.
- 12:49Right I. Mean they're sick of the McAfee
- 12:54doing the McAfee show every week and you can understand why teams
- 12:58would, you know, get fed up with that.
- 12:59But anyway, regardless what you think of him different, a lot of
- 13:04different ways you can go about him.
- 13:05When you're thinking about Aaron Rodgers, one of the things he's
- 13:07indisputable, he's a hell of a player.
- 13:09He was an elbow player, absolutely How?
- 13:11About his head coach. One thing that is confounding to
- 13:16be Do you think Mike Tomlin's going to be good on TV?
- 13:20I'm. Kind of with you, Trenton.
- 13:22And apparently they're falling over each other trying to Fox
- 13:25wants him in the worst way. Now look, Bill Cower's had a job
- 13:28now for 25 years, and I don't think he's very good at it.
- 13:30I don't. Either so and he survived a
- 13:32couple of purges. Yes, absolutely.
- 13:34Out of changing faces and he's been there a cower had something
- 13:37over the weekend. I was just.
- 13:39Yes, we know it's you got to play for everything here.
- 13:43It's the playoffs. Thanks, Bill.
- 13:44Yeah, really. But he's been doing it for 25
- 13:46years and cashing some nice checks.
- 13:47So. All right, so be it.
- 13:50I guess there's a market for him.
- 13:52If I was ATV executive, I don't. I don't think Mike Tomlin,
- 13:55football coach, translates. I don't see it.
- 13:59Jason Garrett's up there doing this thing.
- 14:01I guess there's a market for it. I don't get it now.
- 14:04I also don't watch a ton of pre game post game shows anymore.
- 14:07Right. So I don't have the same depth I
- 14:10guess, of knowledge that I once did.
- 14:11I've never seen him without a hat.
- 14:13Like Tommy? Yeah.
- 14:15You could be able to wear a ball cap.
- 14:17Maybe you can. Maybe you can.
- 14:19Maybe you can, yes. Anyways, good, good stuff.
- 14:22All right, so that's the football.
- 14:24Let's take a quick look ahead to what we have coming up this
- 14:27weekend. And I and I love a lot of these
- 14:29games. You know, I'm down on the
- 14:31Broncos. You are Broncos will beat the
- 14:33Bills. They'll beat the Bills.
- 14:34I believe they'll beat the Bills.
- 14:35They'll run the football. Not not to the extent that you
- 14:39would think that they will. I just think that it's asking an
- 14:42awful lot of Buffalo. Broncos still have a good
- 14:44offensive. Line.
- 14:45They do a really good offensive line, although they look really
- 14:47bad against the Chargers in Week 18.
- 14:50Yeah, RJ Harvey is going to have a good game.
- 14:53He could. He sets up for it.
- 14:55Yeah, it sets up for him. Because they're not good.
- 14:57Again. Look, if you and I still seize
- 14:59your said and done, Kenneth, if you stop 17, you've got a
- 15:02chance. He doesn't have the greatest
- 15:03cast of receivers. Denver's defense is really good.
- 15:07I love the fact that Buffalo is coming to Denver.
- 15:10I think that's the best case scenario for this team.
- 15:13I think Houston gives them fits. I I think this look, I said that
- 15:19Denver would be a one and done and I felt that way.
- 15:22But now you take a look at the match up, I think it's pretty,
- 15:25it's a pretty good, it's a pretty good draw for Denver.
- 15:27So I want to ask you about the middle, because we know whoever
- 15:31and the Bills don't have great white outs.
- 15:33I mean, Kian Coleman, where did he come from?
- 15:35Yeah. Thought he was retired.
- 15:36Yeah, I was. I think he was.
- 15:37He makes the play up the sideline well, he's still on the
- 15:39roster. No, they tried to retire him.
- 15:41Shakur, it's fine. Yeah.
- 15:43It's kind of like, well, not even the Broncos have better
- 15:45wide receivers than the Bills. That's not saying.
- 15:47That's not saying very much. Courtland Sun is fine.
- 15:50Fine. You got maybe some upside.
- 15:52Mims is fine. I did just a bunch of those and
- 15:55the Bills are a step back from that.
- 15:57But what the Bills do have when they're throwing the ball?
- 15:59I like Pat Bryant, the kid from Illinois.
- 16:01I know you do. Kinkaid and Knox.
- 16:04Both really good tight ends. So against tight ends, how would
- 16:07you measure your Broncos with? #2 #2 Sir Tan has taken one of
- 16:13them. What?
- 16:15Sir Tan takes whoever. I would put Sir Tan on the best
- 16:18player on Buffalo, take him totally out of the.
- 16:19Game, so you're going to play like inside slot kind of thing.
- 16:22Yeah, the, the, the whiteouts do not worry me.
- 16:24It's the tight ends that I think you have to worry.
- 16:26About So you're having Sir Tan garden those guys.
- 16:29One of them. OK.
- 16:30Yeah. All right, Riley Moss, you get
- 16:32whatever wide receiver you get here and you go that.
- 16:34Direction and you and you know that you'll get called for a
- 16:36couple of pass interferences because he does every game,
- 16:39whether it's his fault or not, they're going to throw a flag on
- 16:42Moss. You Ankeny guys are tight.
- 16:45You love your AKD guys. That would be the question that
- 16:47I'd have. It's just the tight that would
- 16:49be probably the biggest concern that I'd have.
- 16:52Josh Allen, Josh Allen's health, that has to be a component, has
- 16:55to be he's shaking his hand for how long?
- 16:57During that game he got back, he hurt his knee.
- 17:00There's a lot that is starting to stack up against him.
- 17:03I'm with you. I like Denver in this spot.
- 17:04I think this is a very winnable opportunity.
- 17:07I was, I think the fandom started to show a little bit
- 17:10with you and how frustrated you were.
- 17:11But I didn't love Denver coming in the playoffs.
- 17:14I like I. Still don't like Denver.
- 17:16I mean, I love Denver, but I don't like, I don't think
- 17:19they're a Super Bowl winner. I just don't.
- 17:22I mean, it sets up well. They're at home, Buff.
- 17:25Somebody's going to represent the AFC.
- 17:28Yes, somebody has to get that. Somebody is going to represent
- 17:31the AFC and, and the and you look at the teams that are left,
- 17:34I mean, you can, you can pick holes I think in all of them,
- 17:37can't you? Yes.
- 17:38Oh, absolutely. CJ Stroud for the Texans.
- 17:40Drake May. I just don't know enough about
- 17:43this, this patriot. How have they done this?
- 17:46Other than the fact that the schedule has been incredibly
- 17:50fortuitous to them, How have they done this?
- 17:53I. They have a competent coach and
- 17:55Frabel. I think they're, I think that's
- 17:57fair. That goes a long way.
- 17:58The defence has played at a very good level throughout the course
- 18:01of the. 1-2 punch at running back.
- 18:02Stevenson's been really good and Trevion on Henderson's got a
- 18:05great future good. Tight end with Hunter Henry,
- 18:08yeah, mentioned the offensive line drafted first of all.
- 18:11Hunter Henry, was he? A charger.
- 18:14I don't think he was a patriot. Yes, he was.
- 18:16He was a charger. He was a charger, right?
- 18:18Yes, only 31. Feels like he's been part of our
- 18:21life. Arkansas.
- 18:21Yep. Yep. 31 years old receiving
- 18:26Overall though Stefan Diggs not the same guy he was he's OK
- 18:30pretty good still at this point the booty kid he can get down
- 18:33the. Wheel.
- 18:33I like him. Yeah, I like him.
- 18:34I mean, he's got some wheels to him.
- 18:36Another LSU guy. But who are these guys on
- 18:39defense other than Gonzalez? And and that's the guy you know,
- 18:42right? It's the guy it is.
- 18:44And Ellis the kid, he's got 2 s s Ellis with two s s.
- 18:48Christian Ellis. Yes, he's a good player.
- 18:49Right. But overall, it's it's kind of
- 18:52the no name defense right back in the 70s.
- 18:54That's what this is. It's not household names.
- 18:57It's not people that, you know, Spillane, OK.
- 19:01It just looks weird out there. We're #14 like, is that guy's
- 19:04safety? No, he's a linebacker.
- 19:06What what's he doing out there? It is it, but it's the same
- 19:11thing we've talked about when the Patriots have come up a
- 19:13bunch of times. Just don't feel like we know
- 19:16them. For a team that has won, what
- 19:18did they win this year? 14 games.
- 19:19Not 15. 15 games, I can't remember A-Team quite like this.
- 19:24Even some of those Titans teams and things like that, they still
- 19:27had names that you knew, guys that you know.
- 19:29And that is not the case certainly nationally and and
- 19:31here locally, unless you're Lucas Strain with the Patriots.
- 19:34Yeah, I like your bears. You know why I like your bears?
- 19:38It's going to be 14°. Love it, right?
- 19:41It's going to be windy, it's going to be miserable, and here
- 19:44comes a California team. And that Matthew Stafford is not
- 19:47good in the cold weather. He has not been.
- 19:49He's not been. Historically, he has struggled
- 19:52in these types of games. Now there's going to be
- 19:55opportunities, no doubt. One thing we didn't mention
- 19:58yesterday when we talked about the epic Bears Packers game,
- 20:01what's the crowd? That crowd once again, I don't
- 20:08latest always greatest. I get it, Yeah.
- 20:10Oh, boy, is there an NFL stadium that rocks like that?
- 20:15That I mean, you can feel the pent up frustration that you can
- 20:19hear on these radio Airways from noon to two every day too, when
- 20:22the Bears come up. But just that euphoric feeling
- 20:25that you could, you could get that.
- 20:27And when they're coming back and the belief inside that stadium
- 20:30that down to scores down 11. Yeah, we're fine.
- 20:34We got this. We got.
- 20:35This. You don't get that.
- 20:36Like it's like they said, tell the way right before the drive.
- 20:38We got them right where we want them.
- 20:40Right. True.
- 20:40Absolutely. Yeah.
- 20:42It's that cool demeanor. There was a lot about that part
- 20:47of it that just felt like something special is happening.
- 20:50And I know I'm a fan and I know you believe that a lot as a fan,
- 20:53that it's special for your team compared to other, but I'm with
- 20:57you. I love it.
- 20:58I love that they got the night game.
- 20:59You know, I love that we'll be landed by the time that night.
- 21:01Game can be it's 5:30. 530 yes, Hello.
- 21:06We're in good shape. Get to the hotel, be ready to
- 21:08go. I love the spot here.
- 21:11Thanks for a better. Football team they are.
- 21:13But here's the here's that stat I was telling you about Matthew
- 21:15Stafford. In cold weather, he's one in
- 21:17nine. Under 40° with snow and rain.
- 21:21One in nine. Remember last year in the the
- 21:24Eagles game there was snow and rain and it was cold. 1:00 and
- 21:289:00 when the temperature is under 40°.
- 21:30Now, some of those games were with bad Detroit teams, I'll
- 21:33give you that. He played well against the
- 21:40Eagles last year, but. For for most of it, he did the
- 21:43the play play at the end of the game.
- 21:46We'll see. We'll see what goes.
- 21:47I like your bears. All right, let's get a quick
- 21:49call in here. I look forward to doing this and
- 21:52we will talk to Matt Snyder on the other side.
- 21:55He's in Indiana grad talk a little baseball with Snyder as
- 21:59well as he covers baseball for CBSSports.com.
- 22:02Hello, Jeff. Hey, guys.
- 22:04How's it going today? Good.
- 22:06I wanted to give you a couple quick stats before I get to my
- 22:08point on the Iowa State game. In the Bill Self era, Iowa State
- 22:12has walked into Alan Fieldhouse ranked seven times.
- 22:16They are O and seven leading Alan Fieldhouse ranked against
- 22:20Bill Self. There's #1 #2 Kansas will host
- 22:24Iowa State, who's ranked second tonight.
- 22:27Kansas not being ranked. The last time that has happened
- 22:30was 1989. There's another fun fact for it.
- 22:36Now you would say to me, well, what's the point?
- 22:38What I was they going to do tonight?
- 22:40I've said this to you guys numerous times.
- 22:43It's about their bench. Now, when I say that I look
- 22:47back. It's last game against Oklahoma
- 22:50State. Nelson had 6 minutes, Bateman 2
- 22:54minutes. First half.
- 22:56Nelson had seven points in the first half.
- 22:58Now, I get it. You can say Chef Nelson can't
- 23:02shoot the ball. I get it.
- 23:04But they have other guys that can do that.
- 23:05The way he can create and get downhill and get to the foul
- 23:08line maybe, which they struggle without the team to get to the
- 23:10foul line, they need some kind of offense.
- 23:13Now, you may say, well, yeah, Heisey played 28 minutes.
- 23:16Yeah, and 0 points. They need points off the bench.
- 23:20They don't need defense. They're defense.
- 23:22They're good. They're going to be just fine.
- 23:24They need points off the bench, especially on the road in a
- 23:28hostile environment. This is a must win.
- 23:31I don't want to say must win. This is a very big game for
- 23:34Kansas. They're struggling.
- 23:35They're limping in. This is a game at home that they
- 23:38absolutely need. Does Iowa State need this game
- 23:41tonight? No.
- 23:42Can they still win the conference?
- 23:44And, and again, as an Iowa State fan, it's what you do in March.
- 23:48I can care less what they do tonight.
- 23:50Yes, I do want to win. And yes, as an Iowa State fan, I
- 23:53think if you had a poll, I think if you're going to win a game in
- 23:56conference, it's absolutely Kansas.
- 23:58I did all that. But again, if you look at Iowa
- 24:02State, you guys watch the games. I watch the game.
- 24:04I feel like they're playing with their food lately they haven't
- 24:07had. A.
- 24:07At the beginning of the game, they are.
- 24:09The beginning of the game now when you go back to Purdue, they
- 24:12came out there and they absolutely laid it on.
- 24:14They haven't done that since that game.
- 24:17And if you're going into Kansas, you need to absolutely, from
- 24:20start to finish, 40 minutes, play your best basketball.
- 24:24I can't wait to talk to you tomorrow.
- 24:25Have a good day. Thank you, Jeff.
- 24:26Appreciate the call. Yeah, Big spot for Kansas.
- 24:30Jeff's 1000% right this big spot for Kansas tonight.
- 24:33And you're not just playing against The Jayhawks.
- 24:35And we'll see about Peterson you're playing against.
- 24:38They get a good whistle in that building, You know, playing
- 24:41against the ghosts. I think it's some of the
- 24:43comeback wins that they've had, just inexplicable victories that
- 24:47Kansas has well. Think of some of the whistles
- 24:49they got to help them, right? Go hand in hand, it's true.
- 24:53Got to be ready. So you know when Iowa State fans
- 24:56heads will explode tonight and I don't think it's going to
- 24:58happen, but I guess that's a kick out of it.
- 25:01I like the guy. You, I think you like the guy.
- 25:04But if King Booker recalls the game tonight, Oh yeah, they are
- 25:07so fed up with this guy. Why?
- 25:09Why don't they? Like him?
- 25:10I don't get it. This.
- 25:10Is his voice, I I think he's OK yeah, he's fine Speaking of
- 25:14broadcasters, we're going to do this real quick.
- 25:17It's not not a basketball broadcaster.
- 25:18Are you seeing the Tony Romo hate out there?
- 25:22That it's the end that CBS has a has a huge problem on their hand
- 25:25'cause you got so many more years left at 15,000,000 a year
- 25:29and the team of Nance and Romo have fallen from the top all the
- 25:33way down to they're below everybody nationally.
- 25:37They should. He's not very good.
- 25:39I was never. I was a Romo guy right at the
- 25:42beginning because. He was predicting everything and
- 25:44people are falling in love. I just, I never did it.
- 25:46Don't have to worry about King tonight on the broadcast.
- 25:49It's got to be for Schuler, right?
- 25:50We're. No, it's not.
- 25:51We're getting Dan Schulman and Jay Bellis.
- 25:55That works. Absolutely.
- 25:56Yeah, that's a bigger, better thing.
- 25:58I I agree with you wholeheartedly.
- 25:59That's a great team. That's a really good team.
- 26:02All right, we'll take your time out.
- 26:03We'll talk to Matt Snyder a little baseball conversation
- 26:06next. Speaking of baseball, the voice
- 26:08of the Blue Jays has the game tonight.
- 26:10Dan Schulman on the on the play by play Snyder next.
- 26:14Miller and condom. We're glad you're with us.
- 26:15We're talking sports with you on Des Moines sports Station One O
- 26:196.3 KXNO. Hi, Millory Congdon, welcome
- 26:26back. Iowa Sports Radio Network coming
- 26:29up on 135 here on a Tuesday. Let's talk to our friend Matt
- 26:34Snyder's Indiana grad. His squad will play for a
- 26:38national championship in football.
- 26:41Matt Snyder, you never thought you'd see that as long as you
- 26:44live, don't you? Be honest.
- 26:46No, never. Absolutely not.
- 26:47I think it, I think I told you guys earlier like when we hired
- 26:51Signetti, if you would have said what's your best case scenario
- 26:55for in the second year, I think I would have said like 84 is the
- 26:58absolute pie in the sky best case scenario and said 15 and O,
- 27:02are you kidding me? Like I last night during the the
- 27:07Steelers Ravens game a few times when they would show promos, it
- 27:12still is like thinking in and seems weird like the national
- 27:16championship Indiana heavily favored.
- 27:19Like, man, I'm still kind of like, what world is this?
- 27:23I told you, Matt, I went to a Bloomington game one time, Iowa,
- 27:27Indiana, back when we were both in college back in 1999.
- 27:30It was Antoine Randall L on one side, Scott Mullen on the other
- 27:34for the Hawkeyes, through for 426 yards on that one.
- 27:37And the losing effort for the Hawkeyes is IU got it done 3831.
- 27:41The crazy thing is just seeing this fan base the way that they
- 27:44how starved they are. We saw it here in Des Moines
- 27:47when they came here for the NCAA tournament.
- 27:49A ton of Hoosier fans for basketball, but the football
- 27:52side of it, the number people that are going to make their way
- 27:54down to Miami, the number of people that were in Atlanta,
- 27:56what we obviously saw at the Rose Bowl.
- 27:58This is a star fan base. And I think one thing people
- 28:00didn't realize. And a broke fan base.
- 28:02A huge, huge. Fan base though, a lot of money,
- 28:05a lot of people that have been saving for 60 years.
- 28:08I think it's been there's a misconception that we never
- 28:13cared about football or we didn't know anything about
- 28:15football. No, we knew plenty.
- 28:16We just knew. We stuck and we're, it's frankly
- 28:20an embarrassing program for a long, long, long time.
- 28:23And people, oh, you guys are bandwagon fans.
- 28:26Where were you when they weren't good?
- 28:27Well. All right, it takes me an hour
- 28:30and a half to drive down there. Am I going to do that every
- 28:32single Saturday to watch us get our teeth kicked in?
- 28:34That's a lot different. I always watched.
- 28:37I always watched. But no, I didn't always go.
- 28:40But I mean, I went to the Gator Bowl after the 2019 season.
- 28:45It was January 2nd, 2020, when we played Tennessee because my
- 28:50friend and I, who I went with, who was the same one I went to
- 28:52every game with in college, we thought this is the pinnacle,
- 28:55this is the best we're ever going to be, so let's go to the
- 28:57bowl game this year. So yeah, it's it's been
- 29:01something else, I tell you what. Have you looked at how much it
- 29:05cost to get in? I mean, did you even kick the
- 29:07tires on going? It ain't happening.
- 29:09It's not happening. So I I probably, I am kind of
- 29:14kicking myself about the Rose Bowl because I didn't even think
- 29:18about going. And then the, the, the day
- 29:21before I started looking and like the ticket prices for the
- 29:25upper bowl were not that bad. And I was like, man, maybe I
- 29:29should have gone to that. I don't know if we're ever going
- 29:31to be back, but anyway, I'm perfectly fine to hopefully root
- 29:36for a national champion, which again, I thought would never
- 29:38ever, ever happen. And yet here we are.
- 29:41Absolutely incredible story and going to be fun one there.
- 29:44See. Feel confident against Miami, I
- 29:46take it. I actually do.
- 29:48Like I've been, it's funny, like during the Ohio State and then
- 29:53Alabama and then Oregon games, I've been getting texts from
- 29:55people who knew that I was a die hard IU football fan, but I
- 29:59don't really talk to that much. And for the first couple times I
- 30:03kept saying this is surreal, this is surreal.
- 30:06But during the Oregon game, I was like, I don't think it's
- 30:09surreal anymore. I think I've moved into like
- 30:11extreme confidence now and like, I definitely jumped up on the
- 30:16Pick 6, but it wasn't like yelling and screaming out.
- 30:19More like just had my hand up and was smiling like, Yep, here
- 30:22we go. You know, it's like once you
- 30:24finally get over that point, now I'm like, I'm just excited for
- 30:28the game. I'm not even that nervous now.
- 30:30Maybe those are famous last words, but hey, I've never been
- 30:33here before, so let me be, you know?
- 30:35Let's switch to let's switch to baseball.
- 30:37Let's talk about another of your teams.
- 30:39You cover Major League Baseball, but you do so in part because
- 30:41you became a fan of Major League Baseball and that drew you to
- 30:44the sport. Obviously the Alex Bregman news
- 30:47which broke Bears game, which itself was odd, but I get it.
- 30:51Another one of my themes too. That was a great weekend.
- 30:54Heck yeah, it's good to be you. So Michael Bush batting lead
- 30:57off, then Bregman, Hap Suzuki, PCA, Carson Kelly, Dansby
- 31:01Swanson, Moises by esteros and Nico Horner batting 9th.
- 31:05That's a pretty formidable lineup, if indeed that's what
- 31:07they break spring training looking like.
- 31:10It is I I might want to put Nico at the top, but I can see it
- 31:14both ways. And it seems like Bush really,
- 31:16really got comfortable in the lead off spot.
- 31:20And and in this day and age with the evolution of the lead off
- 31:23man, putting the power hitter in the top spot so he can sneak
- 31:25attack you, which Bush had two lead off homers in the in the
- 31:28playoffs. So they might stick with it that
- 31:32way. Very fired up about the Bregman
- 31:34deal. Not so fired up about the Nico
- 31:37Horner trade. Rumor.
- 31:37Yeah, me neither. Now we're hearing more and more,
- 31:40I tell you what, coming off the heels of signing Bregman, I
- 31:45will, I would figuratively, figuratively, not literally want
- 31:48to burn the house down if they turned around and traded Nico.
- 31:51I thought he was one of the most valuable players in baseball
- 31:53last year. He's a, he's a glue guy on that
- 31:57team. But when I asked Craig counsel
- 31:58about glue guy, he's he kind of and he's right.
- 32:01He said the perception behind the glue guy is he's not that
- 32:05great of a player. And I don't think that does Nico
- 32:07Douglas, because he is a great player and a glue guy both.
- 32:12I I know he's one year away from free agency.
- 32:14I know that people think you have too many infielders.
- 32:18You could just play Shaw at 2nd, but I don't think Shaw did
- 32:21enough for his entire rookie year.
- 32:23I know he was better in the second-half, but he was not
- 32:25great in September or the playoffs.
- 32:28I, I I don't. Think that having an extra
- 32:31infielder is too many, especially when it's Shaw.
- 32:33He can be a super utility guy and if you feel like you need to
- 32:36trade somebody, just trade Shaw. He's really young.
- 32:39He's pre arbitration. There are a lot of teams that
- 32:41would throw their head in the ring there.
- 32:43I know Nico is only one year away from free agency, but I do
- 32:45not think he's the type of player that's going to break the
- 32:48bank. I think the Cubs would do a lot
- 32:51more for the organization if they extended Nico right now.
- 32:55Now that they've already, I think they're probably done with
- 32:58all the outside the organization moves for the offseason.
- 33:01So now you can work on that extension.
- 33:04By the way, the 2015 MLB Draft, I'm sure you guys have seen
- 33:07this. Dansby Swanson went one, Alex
- 33:09Bregman went two, and Ian Hap nine.
- 33:14The first, the 2nd, and the 9th picks in the 2015 draft are all
- 33:18in the Cubs starting lineup. One name that we.
- 33:20Heard. Did you see?
- 33:21Did you see that Bregman, he, he wore #2 his, his jersey number
- 33:26because he hit second pick, not the first.
- 33:28And now he's on the team with the same guy and Dansley's
- 33:31number 2 so. Love that.
- 33:34Hey, there was a guy that we talked about quite a bit leading
- 33:38into it when we had David Kaplan on, and that is the Japanese
- 33:41pitcher, pitcher Tatsioma I'mi. He ends up with the Astros.
- 33:46What happened there? I know the Cubs were involved
- 33:48with a kick in the tires. Was it just the ticket price was
- 33:50too high? What can you tell us on that
- 33:52front? I from the get go it always felt
- 33:55like the Cubs prefer to spend free agency money on position
- 34:00players and try to find pitchers on the cheap, whether it's the
- 34:04Matthew Boyd signing last year or whether it's trading for them
- 34:07with Edward Cabrera. I don't think that they wanted
- 34:10to do a break the bank type deal on a pitcher or not that he
- 34:13necessarily got one because it wasn't gigantic or anything.
- 34:16It was a lot less than people were expecting.
- 34:19I was surprised from the Astros point of view because they don't
- 34:23have any lefties in the rotation.
- 34:25I know that's not really necessarily a non starter, but
- 34:28Pomper Valdez has been so good for them for so long that they
- 34:31looked like they had no interest in him whatsoever.
- 34:33So I thought it was a money thing and maybe it is.
- 34:37Valdez is probably going to make a lot more.
- 34:38Maybe he's the replacement for Valdez.
- 34:40And maybe this was, you know, part of some of the fallout from
- 34:43when he crossed up his catcher on purpose when he had that
- 34:46little temper tantrum last August.
- 34:48So maybe it's all related, but I was surprised just because I
- 34:52thought it didn't look like they wanted to spend much money and
- 34:54then they jumped in right there. One of the things I've been
- 34:56looking forward to asking you since you obviously a lot more
- 35:00connected to it than Trent and I are, we follow baseball, we love
- 35:03baseball, but you write about baseball.
- 35:05Is there anything going on behind the scenes?
- 35:08I mean, we're now in 2026 and once we get to the 1st of
- 35:12December, right, the lockdown is upon us.
- 35:14Is there anything going on and when will the two sides at least
- 35:18try to hammer something out? Or I mean, is this going to be a
- 35:21last minute thing? If indeed it does get done, or
- 35:24does it? Is that where you think we're
- 35:25going? The hunch that I get is, first
- 35:29of all, no, I don't think anything's happening at all
- 35:32behind the scenes other than what we already saw last year,
- 35:35which was Manfred visiting some some clubhouses.
- 35:38And there was the much ballyhooed Bryce Harper stood up
- 35:41and said don't you dare talk about a salary cap.
- 35:44And they got into it for a second trying to lay some
- 35:48groundwork there. But other than that, not really.
- 35:51I think it once the World Series ends, the two sides will start
- 35:54to meet. And then I don't know if Manfred
- 35:57wants to go the route of another defensive lockout when it was
- 36:00totally unnecessary like last time.
- 36:02Maybe that he learned his lesson a little bit and will be more
- 36:05open and amenable to talking to the players and listen to their
- 36:07side. But it's the same as it ever
- 36:10was. The commissioner can claim to be
- 36:12a neutral party, but he's hired by the owners, he's paid by the
- 36:15owners. So he's the owner's boy and the
- 36:18players know that. So we'll see.
- 36:21I think it's going to get pretty contentious.
- 36:23I think there are 10 to 12 ownership groups that really,
- 36:26really, really want a salary cap.
- 36:28At least that may be more. And the players for years and
- 36:32years and years have said that is an absolute non starter.
- 36:34And I know that they have it and and the other major professional
- 36:37sports. But the system in baseball with
- 36:39three pre arbitration years and then three arbitration years.
- 36:43And we just saw a scoop ball where the Tigers only offer like
- 36:47$20 million when he's worth like 40 or 50.
- 36:51The system in place where you have six years before a guy gets
- 36:55the free agency, I think the players can argue small market
- 36:59teams can still compete. Now, the timing probably isn't
- 37:02great with the Dodgers having won back-to-back titles or first
- 37:05back-to-back champs, the Yankees 198 to 2000.
- 37:10And maybe that's where the owners will jump in and say,
- 37:12hey, what about this? But man, the Brewers had the
- 37:15best record in the National League last year.
- 37:17They just didn't get it done in the playoffs against the
- 37:19Dodgers. So to say that the small market
- 37:22teams cannot compete isn't really true.
- 37:25Want to go this direction as we see the news of Nolan Arenado
- 37:29moving on, obviously dimension diminished from what he once
- 37:32was. Cash considerations going with
- 37:34Arizona along with him to help pay some of that salary.
- 37:37But is this a sign that the Cardinals are finally doing
- 37:40maybe what they should have done a couple years back?
- 37:42It's time to tear this thing down, tear it down to the studs,
- 37:45and the rebuild is happening. Yes, 100%.
- 37:48And it already started because the sunny Gray trade to the Red
- 37:51Sox, the Wilson Contreras trade to the Red Sox.
- 37:53Now Aaron Otto finally accepted one.
- 37:55Remember, last offseason, he rejected the trade.
- 37:58He towed it to the Astros. So I don't know if it's like now
- 38:02he just saw the writing on the wall or he's like Arizona that
- 38:05much more than Houston. Whatever it was, he's OK with
- 38:08that. Brendan Donovan looks like he's
- 38:11going to go. I know it seems like he hasn't
- 38:14been around that long. And why would they get rid of
- 38:16that guy? He's a good player, which is a
- 38:18really good utility player. Giants want him, apparently.
- 38:21He's 29 years old, so it's when you're looking at a rebuild
- 38:26that's going to take multiple years by the time they turn it
- 38:28around. Dot, you talk about Donovan
- 38:30being 3233 and makes sense to deal him right now, especially
- 38:34once Bregman signed and now could tell Marte looks like he's
- 38:39not going to be on the market. Maybe wait until Bichette signs
- 38:43and see where he goes and see who missed out on Bichette.
- 38:45And now you've got some people look looking for Donovan
- 38:48especially. Hopefully what for my sake, when
- 38:52the Cubs say we're not trading to go harder, my expectation is
- 38:56let's say Bichette signs with the Phillies.
- 38:59You've got at least the Red Sox and Giants saying, hey, please
- 39:02give us Brendan Donovan. Now you have a bidding war.
- 39:04So I think that's where the Cardinals will wait out the
- 39:07Bichette market and then probably hope that the Cubs pull
- 39:10Nico back and then that's when they can really strike with the
- 39:13Donovan trade. We got to go to break, brother.
- 39:16We will talk to you on the When is the Hall of Fame
- 39:18announcement? Tuesday, Tuesday, we will.
