Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: One of the most interesting characters in literature is called the Unreliable Narrator.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: This character might be delusional, they might be a liar, or they might simply be prone to exaggeration, or they simply might not have a firm grasp on reality because of their personality or their mental state.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Now, the unreliable narrator is so effective as a storytelling device because you don't know what to believe as a reader, and therefore it keeps you guessing the whole time.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Some examples of the unreliable narrator in literature include the character Alex in A Clockwork Orange, the unnamed narrator in the short story The Telltale Heart, or Pai Patal in The Life of Pi.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: You can also see the unreliable narrator character in movies like Fight Club, Gone Girl, or the Usual Suspects.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Each of us has an unreliable narrator in our heads.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: This is the voice telling you that you're not good enough, you're not gifted, and nobody's going to like your writing.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: The unreliable narrator is telling you lies and therefore is trying to give you false information.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Now, at the same time, you have a reliable narrator in your head.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: This one tells you the truth, such as you can make a difference.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Habits are the gateway to success, and you can achieve much more than you ever thought possible.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Your task today is to drown out the unreliable narrator and listen to the other voice that's telling you the truth.
