- 0:01Dave Hamilton: Business brain episode 786 for wednesday september 9th international box wine
- 0:08Dave Hamilton: day 2026 the box wine experiment it's an interesting like.
- 0:15Shannon Jean: Yeah we tried it
- 0:17Dave Hamilton: Well yeah but you're californians you don't count i know i really like i think
- 0:21Dave Hamilton: the box wine thing like it's it's it's a huge success everywhere that people aren't wine snobs like.
- 0:28Shannon Jean: I don't know anything about wine i just know what i like sure and so uh we tried
- 0:32Shannon Jean: it we were going on a cruise and we're like oh we'll take these with us it'll
- 0:35Shannon Jean: be great yeah didn't really work didn't work because part of drinking for us is
- 0:38Dave Hamilton: Social sure oh we want to.
- 0:40Shannon Jean: Be at the
- 0:40Dave Hamilton: Bar yeah yeah we want to be.
- 0:42Shannon Jean: At the in that case but
- 0:43Dave Hamilton: That i know that part i get for sure alcohol is a very social thing i don't
- 0:47Dave Hamilton: think it belongs to concerts but that's a whole other thing uh it's i saw.
- 0:51Shannon Jean: Them that's the only way they make money
- 0:53Dave Hamilton: I know but it's terrible for live music and i say this as a musician that you
- 0:57Dave Hamilton: know who is like a beer salesman, therefore.
- 1:00Dave Hamilton: But, you know, the problem is alcohol is a very social thing.
- 1:04Dave Hamilton: Drug and it makes people it inspires people to tell,
- 1:09Dave Hamilton: a story that's very important to them in the moment that it comes during the
- 1:14Dave Hamilton: concert and it happens to be during the con dude i gotta tell you
- 1:18Dave Hamilton: you know and then it's like hey you know there's a thing going on over there
- 1:21Dave Hamilton: that you spent a lot of money on and guess what so did i you know but yeah,
- 1:25Dave Hamilton: um but i can see that no the The boxed wine thing is really interesting because it deals with,
- 1:32Dave Hamilton: the oxidation problem, right?
- 1:35Dave Hamilton: Where wine ages and, you know, because it's essentially a vacuum sealed thing
- 1:39Dave Hamilton: and the bag just gets smaller. It was a good business move. I can see we're bringing it on cruise.
- 1:45Shannon Jean: I think so.
- 1:45Dave Hamilton: You're not supposed to bring alcohol on cruises. I know that.
- 1:48Shannon Jean: I was trying to beat the system.
- 1:49Dave Hamilton: Story of life. I get that. I understand beating the system.
- 1:53Dave Hamilton: That's that's like you know we talk about living the charmed life um,
- 1:58Dave Hamilton: beating the system was my my grandfather's favorite phrase and his way of life
- 2:04Dave Hamilton: but it really is the same thing he led a very charmed life because he figured
- 2:09Dave Hamilton: out ways to beat the system like that's yeah yeah.
- 2:12Shannon Jean: It's the best way to go
- 2:13Dave Hamilton: It's the only way to go it's like hey my chair just fell down i think the system i was.
- 2:19Shannon Jean: Trying to make it go higher okay there we go i think i might have got a little
- 2:22Dave Hamilton: All right so So I have, I came across this week a way to beat the system,
- 2:28Dave Hamilton: and I wanted to share it with all of you. Okay.
- 2:30Dave Hamilton: I signed up for this company, superpower.com.
- 2:35Dave Hamilton: They're like Function Health or any of these that'll give you like,
- 2:40Dave Hamilton: you know, they'll test all kinds of things that generally your doctor,
- 2:43Dave Hamilton: you know, doesn't test for. Yeah. And if you're a hypochondriac,
- 2:46Dave Hamilton: it's terrible for you because you're going to find out information that's bad.
- 2:50Dave Hamilton: But if you're but if you're a data person like me, OK, I wound up using Function
- 2:55Dave Hamilton: Health last year and it was really helpful to have a baseline from before I got Lyme disease.
- 3:01Dave Hamilton: Right. And all of that stuff like it's really helpful for that.
- 3:04Dave Hamilton: And these people at Superpower actually reached out for my GitGab podcast and
- 3:07Dave Hamilton: said, we think this would be good. And we, you know, so they sent me a thing,
- 3:10Dave Hamilton: and I finally signed up for it.
- 3:12Dave Hamilton: And, you know, you go through the process and it's just a series of blood tests
- 3:15Dave Hamilton: and then data and other things, too. They offer other tests,
- 3:19Dave Hamilton: too. I don't want to simplify it.
- 3:20Dave Hamilton: But the story is about their implementation because going through it,
- 3:26Dave Hamilton: you know, you give them your email address.
- 3:27Dave Hamilton: They ask you, do you want to get text reminders of your appointments and things
- 3:30Dave Hamilton: like that? Sure, that's fine.
- 3:32Dave Hamilton: So I signed up for it and I get a text, of course, from a random number that,
- 3:38Dave Hamilton: is superpower, right? And it, you know, it explains we're a superpower.
- 3:42Dave Hamilton: You just signed up for us. Yada, yada, yada.
- 3:45Dave Hamilton: And then it includes a link, Shannon. They explain, you know,
- 3:49Dave Hamilton: they do their whole thing.
- 3:51Dave Hamilton: And just above the link, it says, add the contact card below and text this line,
- 3:58Dave Hamilton: you know, message this line back.
- 4:00Dave Hamilton: If you have any questions, your real human health concierge team is always available.
- 4:05Dave Hamilton: And the file that they sent is a VCF file.
- 4:09Dave Hamilton: Now, you would think as a podcaster, I would have prepared to tell you what
- 4:13Dave Hamilton: VCF stands for. I think it's something contact file.
- 4:19Dave Hamilton: VCF files are imported into the address book app on your phone.
- 4:23Dave Hamilton: If you're on an Apple device, it's contacts is the name of the app.
- 4:26Dave Hamilton: But your phone will know what to do with this file.
- 4:30Dave Hamilton: And it adds their record.
- 4:35Dave Hamilton: To your contacts. And what that means is now in your text messaging app,
- 4:41Dave Hamilton: instead of it saying the number is 4723 or whatever, It says superpower.
- 4:47Dave Hamilton: It has their logo.
- 4:49Dave Hamilton: It has their email and their website, of course, in the contacts.
- 4:52Dave Hamilton: I like it. It's so freaking smart.
- 4:55Dave Hamilton: If you are sending text messages from your business, you absolutely want to
- 5:01Dave Hamilton: do this. And the best time to do it is first. The first message.
- 5:06Dave Hamilton: The second best time, if you're already texting people, is right freaking now.
- 5:10Dave Hamilton: Give it to them because now they're going to get your logo and your name right there and that way a,
- 5:17Dave Hamilton: it bypasses all of the their spam filters but it also just looks nicer when
- 5:22Dave Hamilton: your message appears it comes from you not four seven two three one or whatever
- 5:26Dave Hamilton: the number that's a big deal texting from it's a huge deal yeah yeah yeah so.
- 5:32Shannon Jean: Plus it adds a ton of credibility right
- 5:34Dave Hamilton: Because instantly Yes.
- 5:36Shannon Jean: We're all getting these spam calls. They're saying, I'm with this,
- 5:40Shannon Jean: I'm with that. I don't know. Or spam texts now too. That too, sure.
- 5:44Shannon Jean: You know, you adding that to your, to getting them into that contact, I think it's great.
- 5:48Dave Hamilton: It's super important. It's, it's the way to go. Yeah. It's.
- 5:54Shannon Jean: But I've never seen anybody doing it.
- 5:55Dave Hamilton: I know. It was a first for me. Yeah. Yeah. It's weird. It is a,
- 5:59Dave Hamilton: it is a V card file is what VCF stands for.
- 6:03Dave Hamilton: V card file. V card is the, the, the,
- 6:07Dave Hamilton: structure of a contact record that, that is portable to, you know,
- 6:11Dave Hamilton: to any app that supports contacts like a like a ics for a calendar file this
- 6:16Dave Hamilton: is a vcf it's for it's for contacts.
- 6:19Shannon Jean: Makes sense yep yeah even my bank doesn't do it they're texting me this kind
- 6:23Shannon Jean: of stuff and they don't put that in there
- 6:24Dave Hamilton: I should totally do like i said it's weird to me it's not that weird but but it
- 6:29Dave Hamilton: i i was pleasantly surprised that the first company to do this is essentially
- 6:33Dave Hamilton: a startup you know i mean they're much newer than my bank is you know and they're
- 6:36Dave Hamilton: but they're they know what to do and they know they're going to text me and
- 6:39Dave Hamilton: they've been texting me all weekend because I had my first blood test in the morning.
- 6:42Dave Hamilton: So they're like, you know, on Saturday, they're like, you got to make sure you
- 6:44Dave Hamilton: stop these supplements if you happen to be taking them and, you know,
- 6:47Dave Hamilton: yada, yada, yada, which is great. Like I, it's awesome.
- 6:50Dave Hamilton: Yeah. So really, really smart and they deserve credit for it,
- 6:54Dave Hamilton: which is why I wanted to mention their name in the, in the show.
- 6:57Dave Hamilton: So if you're not doing this with your business,
- 7:01Dave Hamilton: And if you are texting people, do this right away. You'll be one of the first.
- 7:05Dave Hamilton: You might be there first, too. Right?
- 7:08Shannon Jean: Makes sense.
- 7:09Dave Hamilton: I love it. Yeah. At some point, we're all going to get tired of these VCFs arriving,
- 7:15Dave Hamilton: and we're not going to be adding them anymore. But right now, it's novel.
- 7:19Dave Hamilton: I was eager. I was like, oh, this is amazing. I want to add this.
- 7:21Dave Hamilton: And I probably would add it for other things down the road.
- 7:24Shannon Jean: Sure. Well, if you knew, you're going to have repeat contact with them.
- 7:27Dave Hamilton: That's it.
- 7:28Shannon Jean: Totally makes sense.
- 7:29Dave Hamilton: Totally makes sense. In fact, I have gone out of my way for like the companies
- 7:34Dave Hamilton: that that text me that I know I'm going to have repeat contact with.
- 7:37Dave Hamilton: I create a contact record for them so I know who they are when I'm driving my car.
- 7:42Dave Hamilton: I don't want to see that I got a text from 47231. I want to see that it came
- 7:48Dave Hamilton: from, you know, American Express or whoever, you know, like, do I care?
- 7:53Dave Hamilton: You know, is it is it Target telling me about the deals of the week or is it
- 7:57Dave Hamilton: like Amex trying to tell me that somebody is, you know, using my car?
- 8:00Dave Hamilton: Yeah, these things matter.
- 8:04Dave Hamilton: Absolutely uh make sure you do that yep we have more to talk about uh and the
- 8:08Dave Hamilton: next thing that we are going to talk about is our sponsors,
- 8:12Dave Hamilton: and that brings up the subject of sleep because for anybody running a business
- 8:18Dave Hamilton: that's the part of the day that gets sacrificed first i know that's true for
- 8:21Dave Hamilton: me and it's probably true for many of you too our sponsor fitnexa
- 8:26Dave Hamilton: sent me their somnipods 3 they actually sent them to both me and shannon
- 8:30Dave Hamilton: and these are earbuds built specifically for sleeping The whole design is flat
- 8:35Dave Hamilton: and low profile built so that when you're on your side with your head on the
- 8:38Dave Hamilton: pillow, you're not getting that pressure that you get from like regular earbuds.
- 8:42Dave Hamilton: And that was my first question going in, right?
- 8:45Dave Hamilton: Will these actually work for me lying down? And the answer is yes.
- 8:49Dave Hamilton: They're comfortable and I can side sleep my ear on the pillow without thinking
- 8:54Dave Hamilton: about it even when they're in.
- 8:56Dave Hamilton: The noise reduction is the other thing that I was really like eager to test out.
- 9:02Dave Hamilton: And these seal really well. So they take the edge off the noise around me.
- 9:07Dave Hamilton: These have earned a spot in my travel kit for sure, right?
- 9:11Dave Hamilton: You got to check these out and you can do that. You can check out Somnipods3
- 9:16Dave Hamilton: at go.fitnexa.com slash brain.
- 9:20Dave Hamilton: The link will automatically apply $10 off.
- 9:23Dave Hamilton: That's go.fitnexa.com slash brain.
- 9:27Dave Hamilton: And you can also just use code brain for $10 off. We'll put the link in the
- 9:31Dave Hamilton: show notes. Check them out. I think you're going to like them as much as we do.
- 9:34Dave Hamilton: And our thanks to FitNexa and Somnipods3 for sponsoring this episode.
- 9:40Dave Hamilton: And I know I've told this story before, but I want to tell it again.
- 9:42Dave Hamilton: We had a morning team meeting once where somebody said, we need to sell merch for the business.
- 9:48Dave Hamilton: Normal outcome, right? That idea dies in a Slack thread somewhere.
- 9:53Dave Hamilton: Instead, and because of our sponsor Shopify, by the close of business that same
- 9:58Dave Hamilton: day, we had the store up and we'd already made our first sale.
- 10:03Dave Hamilton: Same day, thanks to our sponsor Shopify.
- 10:07Dave Hamilton: That's the part I wish I'd understood earlier, right? Shopify is where you go
- 10:11Dave Hamilton: to start your business and everything you need is already there on day one.
- 10:16Dave Hamilton: You don't have to know how to do it all yourself. The design templates and the
- 10:21Dave Hamilton: AI site builder they have do the heavy lifting on the storefront.
- 10:24Dave Hamilton: So you're not staring at a blank page wondering what a homepage is supposed
- 10:28Dave Hamilton: to look like in 2026. They have it covered.
- 10:31Dave Hamilton: And ShopPay is the easiest checkout out there, which matters because the fastest
- 10:37Dave Hamilton: way to lose a first sale is clunky checkout.
- 10:40Dave Hamilton: We use it for merch on another one of my podcasts, and I love it.
- 10:44Dave Hamilton: We really didn't have it all together when we launched, right?
- 10:48Dave Hamilton: We just started, and Shopify makes that easy.
- 10:51Dave Hamilton: So if you're ready to hear the ka-ching of your first sale today,
- 10:56Dave Hamilton: head over to Shopify.com slash BusinessBrain to start your free trial today.
- 11:02Dave Hamilton: That's right. Start your free trial at Shopify.com slash BusinessBrain.
- 11:07Dave Hamilton: One more time, that's Shopify.com slash BusinessBrain. Go check it out.
- 11:11Dave Hamilton: I think you're going to like it as much as we do.
- 11:13Dave Hamilton: And our thanks to Shopify for sponsoring this episode.
- 11:16Dave Hamilton: And speaking of stories that we've told before, we're going to revisit something.
- 11:22Dave Hamilton: Back in December, you shared your two-year experiment idea, which,
- 11:28Dave Hamilton: correct me if I'm wrong, but if I remember, was the first year to learn, the second to execute.
- 11:33Dave Hamilton: And you recently did a post on X about this and got a lot of great feedback
- 11:38Dave Hamilton: and comments, and so it's time to re-dig.
- 11:41Shannon Jean: Yeah, definitely go into it a little bit more.
- 11:45Shannon Jean: It's, we talk about experiments all the time. And I think one of the things
- 11:49Shannon Jean: we don't do is give ourselves enough time.
- 11:54Shannon Jean: We, you know, that first eight to 12 months to learn whatever you need to learn.
- 11:59Shannon Jean: And then that second year to start executing on it or building on it,
- 12:03Shannon Jean: whatever you want to call it.
- 12:05Shannon Jean: It's, it's really powerful. When I look back on businesses that I've started,
- 12:11Shannon Jean: it's a very common framework.
- 12:13Shannon Jean: It's like, okay, we're going to dig into this, going to dig into this.
- 12:15Shannon Jean: And one of the comments I heard recently that stuck out to me, excuse me, is that,
- 12:24Shannon Jean: Everybody know who Stripe is, right? They're a massive credit card payment processor. We use them.
- 12:32Shannon Jean: After two years, Stripe had 50 customers.
- 12:36Dave Hamilton: Wow.
- 12:37Shannon Jean: I'll say it again. 24 months, two years into it, Stripe only had 50 customers.
- 12:43Shannon Jean: And now they're talking about buying PayPal and they do the zillions of dollars of transactions.
- 12:49Shannon Jean: So you gotta give yourself the time to to do it and a lot of times that means
- 12:57Shannon Jean: compromising because you don't
- 12:58Shannon Jean: make maybe you're not going to make any money so you have to like okay
- 13:02Shannon Jean: maybe you have to do something else like get a job or keep your job let's say
- 13:06Shannon Jean: like i want to leave if you don't have a job or keep doing a business like in
- 13:10Shannon Jean: my case it was well i'm bored at this business i don't want to do it anymore,
- 13:14Shannon Jean: but I need to keep that business going while I do this two-year experiment to do the next thing.
- 13:22Shannon Jean: And it's just proven to me over and over that that 24 months,
- 13:29Shannon Jean: it can set the tone for a decade,
- 13:33Dave Hamilton: Right?
- 13:33Shannon Jean: And I did it with just one thing after another, right now, my two-year experiment
- 13:39Shannon Jean: is with my social business and my reseller mastermind.
- 13:43Shannon Jean: And I really feel that after two years, seeing everything that's come,
- 13:47Shannon Jean: come out of it, that we have just set this or built this incredible foundation for the next decade.
- 13:55Shannon Jean: Yes. Because it was a year to learn. I didn't know anything about it.
- 13:58Shannon Jean: You know, you're the one that pushed me to get onto X.
- 14:01Shannon Jean: It took me a year to really get it figured out.
- 14:03Dave Hamilton: Yeah, it takes time. Right, yeah.
- 14:05Shannon Jean: And it takes time. And they're like, well, why am I here? What am I doing?
- 14:07Shannon Jean: What is your offer? How does it work?
- 14:11Shannon Jean: Give yourself that two years and maybe you just don't have to talk about it
- 14:16Shannon Jean: a lot because everybody's impatient.
- 14:19Shannon Jean: And a lot of times you'll get, are you still working on that?
- 14:22Shannon Jean: Are you still trying to do that thing?
- 14:24Dave Hamilton: People that don't do what we do don't understand that. I mean,
- 14:30Dave Hamilton: you know, don't understand how long it takes and often don't understand what it takes.
- 14:36Dave Hamilton: Not that they couldn't do it, but they haven't done it. They won't.
- 14:39Dave Hamilton: They don't. Well, a lot of them
- 14:40Dave Hamilton: won't. Some of them will, but they haven't whether they will or won't.
- 14:44Dave Hamilton: They haven't yet. They don't understand.
- 14:47Dave Hamilton: And and it's that, you know, it's been said a million different ways.
- 14:50Dave Hamilton: My favorite way of saying it is, you know, overnight success takes about 20
- 14:54Dave Hamilton: years, you know, and it can come faster than that. But but not that much faster,
- 15:00Dave Hamilton: maybe 10 years, like if you're lucky. Right.
- 15:02Dave Hamilton: But, you know, the thing that other people consider overnight success rarely
- 15:07Dave Hamilton: happens overnight. And it takes time.
- 15:12Dave Hamilton: No, but they don't know about it. And so they see, oh, Shannon was like doing this other thing.
- 15:17Dave Hamilton: And then suddenly overnight, like he had this huge social following and everything.
- 15:21Dave Hamilton: It's like, well, if you've been listening to this show, you know,
- 15:23Dave Hamilton: that's patently false, right? Like you built this thing. You built this at least
- 15:27Dave Hamilton: somewhat in public, right? Like, you know.
- 15:29Shannon Jean: You talk about it all the time. We talk about here all the time,
- 15:32Shannon Jean: everything. But it just, whether it was, you know, my technology business or
- 15:37Shannon Jean: the fashion business or whatever, It just really takes, it takes a couple of years.
- 15:41Shannon Jean: And I think that's the runway you should build.
- 15:45Shannon Jean: Yeah. Is don't go into it. And especially like when I read that Stripe,
- 15:49Shannon Jean: you know, comment, I was like, oh my gosh, it's so true.
- 15:54Shannon Jean: Don't sell yourself short. A lot of people like, well, I'm gonna do it if I
- 15:56Shannon Jean: don't make it in the first six months. Yeah. In the first one, first year,
- 16:02Shannon Jean: It's not worth it. No. And I think it's okay to have a- Go ahead.
- 16:07Shannon Jean: Well, I was going to say, I think it's okay to have that plan B to help you
- 16:13Shannon Jean: buy the two years, right? Yes. Especially if you have like a spouse or kids
- 16:18Shannon Jean: and you have family, you got to support, you got to figure out something to do.
- 16:21Shannon Jean: And I have a lot of people like, yeah, I just can't leave my job yet.
- 16:24Shannon Jean: I'm like, don't, don't leave your job then.
- 16:26Shannon Jean: Right. But just, you know, work at night. let's carve out time in your day that
- 16:31Shannon Jean: you can build this thing for two years and then, or a year or two,
- 16:35Shannon Jean: whatever it is, and then leave your job if that's what you want,
- 16:37Shannon Jean: if that's what part of your system that you're building.
- 16:41Dave Hamilton: Yeah, no, what I was going to say is...
- 16:44Dave Hamilton: Yes give yourself the time and i think two years is a good amount of time uh
- 16:49Dave Hamilton: the correct amount of time um,
- 16:52Dave Hamilton: but don't just wait for it like don't don't assume that oh all i need to do
- 16:57Dave Hamilton: is put in the time there's some of that's actually true like
- 17:01Dave Hamilton: for some things you all you really all you need to do is just but you got to
- 17:05Dave Hamilton: keep doing it during that time and and learn,
- 17:09Dave Hamilton: And be willing to accept that you are going to do things wrong or miss out on
- 17:17Dave Hamilton: doing the right things, some combination of that, right?
- 17:21Dave Hamilton: And adjust and tweak, but don't give up. Just keep tweaking and also just keep doing.
- 17:29Dave Hamilton: If you don't have any indication that what you're doing is wrong and it seems
- 17:33Dave Hamilton: like a well-thought-out idea, then just keep doing it.
- 17:36Dave Hamilton: That's the part that's the hardest. Yeah. is you know you're not getting feedback
- 17:41Dave Hamilton: and knowing nope i'm i'm this,
- 17:43Dave Hamilton: i believe this is right when you get feedback listen to it you know and whatever
- 17:48Dave Hamilton: form that feedback comes in it might be cash flow it might be,
- 17:51Dave Hamilton: you know losing a sale it might be getting a sale i don't you know all of those
- 17:56Dave Hamilton: look at all the data that you can gather about this thing all the signals,
- 18:01Dave Hamilton: but and tweak but then just don't stop that's the other important part just keep going.
- 18:07Shannon Jean: It builds up It brings up such a good point, and we're going to talk about this
- 18:11Shannon Jean: next week, about building in reverse. And I'm adding it to our list because
- 18:17Shannon Jean: building in reverse is such a hack
- 18:22Shannon Jean: for not building in that vacuum and for figuring out, short-cutting a lot of
- 18:28Shannon Jean: the stuff. So we'll talk more about that next week. All right.
- 18:32Dave Hamilton: Yeah. I have a question for you, Shannon. Yes. What's this episode's big takeaway? Thank you.
- 18:40Shannon Jean: To me, you've got to buy yourself the time, the two years to one year.
- 18:46Shannon Jean: I like the way you said it. One year to experiment, one year to execute.
- 18:50Dave Hamilton: I think you said that back in December.
- 18:51Shannon Jean: I'm not sure. I'll take credit for it.
- 18:54Dave Hamilton: I mean, it's what's in the notes.
- 18:57Shannon Jean: Okay, then that's perfect.
- 18:58Dave Hamilton: It came out of the episode. I don't know if it was you or me, but yeah, it was there.
- 19:05Dave Hamilton: That's it for me. I'll agree with that. Don't forget about your downloadable
- 19:08Dave Hamilton: VCF. That's just such an easy hack to get right into people's people's contacts.
- 19:13Dave Hamilton: I mean, what a thing that's going to help your email get past spam filters, too, by the way.
- 19:17Dave Hamilton: So that's true. Right. Like that. There's that that sidecar that comes along
- 19:22Dave Hamilton: with it. If you put an email address in those contacts, that one's now whitelisted
- 19:26Dave Hamilton: on people's machines. So, yeah.
- 19:29Dave Hamilton: But yeah, I agree. You know, give yourself two years. I think that that,
- 19:34Dave Hamilton: you know, two years to get started. I like it. Yeah, sure.
