- 0:04Speaker 1: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 0:07Speaker 1: the best youth football coverage.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Here's OC from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of.
- 0:13Speaker 1: ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hour three of the Sean O'Connell Show on a Tuesday
- 0:19Speaker 2: that feels like a Monday because we had Labor Day weekend.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We welcome in, as the NFL comes back in earnest
- 0:26Speaker 2: this week, former NFL offensive lineman, former Oregon Duck, longtime co-host.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Of mine, Jeff Schwartz. Hey, Jeff.
- 0:34Speaker 1: How you doing, buddy? Doing good.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Doing great.
- 0:37Speaker 1: You'd said nice big win the other day. There we go.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Starting off with a bang.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Yeah. How come Oregon didn't do the same thing?
- 0:46Speaker 1: So I was, uh, at the game with my kids,
- 0:48Speaker 1: which was great. Um, and I was sitting and I,
- 0:50Speaker 1: they gave me nice seats and I was in the
- 0:52Speaker 1: box and, um, it was in the box with some important, uh, people.
- 0:56Speaker 1: And it was, there was a little bit of a,
- 0:59Speaker 1: it was, the box was a little bit quiet for
- 1:01Speaker 1: a couple of quarters. Um, But eventually, obviously, I never
- 1:05Speaker 1: felt like we'd lose. It was just kind of annoying.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Bill Conley gave us SP +, for those who don't know.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I'll talk about Bill a lot throughout the season. He
- 1:15Speaker 1: gave us a 98% chance to win after the game.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You double up someone in yardage, you get a good
- 1:23Speaker 1: chance to win the game. I think a theme of
- 1:26Speaker 1: the weekend, and it definitely played out in that game,
- 1:28Speaker 1: was just the officiating was atrocious this weekend, and they
- 1:33Speaker 1: didn't call kick-catch interference, and that led to Boise State
- 1:35Speaker 1: scoring immediately. They call that, and, you know, 7-7 game,
- 1:39Speaker 1: we have the ball, and we just scored a touchdown.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I think we had forced three straight three outs. It
- 1:44Speaker 1: was a lot different. You can't, to me, look, you
- 1:47Speaker 1: call holding, you don't call holding, look, whatever. You can't
- 1:50Speaker 1: miss procedural stuff. You can't miss stuff like that, Sean.
- 1:54Speaker 1: It's always been my thing about fishing. You know I've
- 1:55Speaker 1: been very firm on this. You just can't mess up, like,
- 1:58Speaker 1: procedural stuff. And stuff that's really black and white. If
- 2:02Speaker 1: you don't want to call holding or pass interference, fine. Whatever.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But you just can't mess up stuff that's pretty black
- 2:07Speaker 1: and white.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Okay, let me ask you. You played a lot more
- 2:11Speaker 2: years of football than most people do.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:15Speaker 2: There's a difference between starting a game with a stiff test.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And look, I think Boise qualifies. I know that there's
- 2:21Speaker 2: a lot of people who want to say like, oh yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 2: you're not in the power conference anymore.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Oregon's supposed to be way better.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Fine.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Right?
- 2:28Speaker 2: To me, there's a big difference between starting with a
- 2:30Speaker 2: real game versus having a practice game. I don't know
- 2:33Speaker 2: if there's any NFL opponents that count as practice games.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Really?
- 2:37Speaker 2: You do get actual preseason games there, but like going
- 2:41Speaker 2: back through your heart, your whole career, can you characterize
- 2:43Speaker 2: for me the difference? If you had notable differences between
- 2:47Speaker 2: like when you get the FCS opponent in week one
- 2:49Speaker 2: versus when you have to kick off against you know
- 2:52Speaker 2: a program at least as good as boise state or
- 2:55Speaker 2: like some of these other teams that in recent years
- 2:57Speaker 2: have played ohio state week one or whatever i don't think.
- 3:00Speaker 1: We ever played so we played uh i'm gonna play
- 3:04Speaker 1: montana once in week one otherwise we went to houston
- 3:07Speaker 1: one year um we played stanford one year oddly enough
- 3:11Speaker 1: and we played indiana and we lost oh ford indiana
- 3:13Speaker 1: so we never played like a real pasty i think
- 3:15Speaker 1: except played montana maybe one year i think You just
- 3:19Speaker 1: prepare for the game the same way. You can't prepare
- 3:22Speaker 1: for it a different way. Now, obviously, the result is
- 3:24Speaker 1: you get to play young guys. I know Oregon was
- 3:25Speaker 1: looking forward to playing some young guys on the offensive
- 3:28Speaker 1: line and some other positions. They just didn't get a
- 3:29Speaker 1: chance to do that because week one was a tougher
- 3:32Speaker 1: game than they imagined. I don't know if there's any
- 3:36Speaker 1: right or wrong way to do this. I mean, would
- 3:38Speaker 1: you say Louisville or Ole Miss felt like they started
- 3:41Speaker 1: the season off too tough? I don't think so. So
- 3:43Speaker 1: I don't think there's a right or wrong way to
- 3:46Speaker 1: start the season. I think that you prepare the same way.
- 3:49Speaker 1: There's a little less stress when you're playing Idaho than
- 3:52Speaker 1: when you're playing someone who's better, but I don't think
- 3:55Speaker 1: that you prepare differently as a player.
- 3:59Speaker 3: I'm glad you brought up the Idaho thing.
- 4:02Speaker 2: We're talking about a Utah offensive line that, look, ultimately
- 4:07Speaker 2: you demolished Idaho, but we're still saying, hold on a minute,
- 4:11Speaker 2: our offensive line should have been pushing them around at will.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Our defensive line Should have had four sacks and eight
- 4:17Speaker 2: tackles for loss against an Idaho team that just doesn't
- 4:20Speaker 2: have the same level of player. That oversimplifies the whole
- 4:24Speaker 2: thing that's disrespectful to the guys that, yes, it's a
- 4:28Speaker 2: slightly lower level of football, but, I mean, they're playing
- 4:30Speaker 2: their best, especially now that the transfer portal is a
- 4:33Speaker 2: reality and things like that. when you did play the
- 4:36Speaker 2: guys from a lower-level school or even in conference school
- 4:40Speaker 2: that didn't have the same level of guy, what is
- 4:44Speaker 2: the difference? You're an Oregon starting offensive lineman, you're Jeff Schwartz,
- 4:49Speaker 2: you're NFL-bound, and that Montana defensive lineman is 70%.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Of what you're used to seeing? Is he 85% of
- 4:58Speaker 3: what you're used to seeing? Give me a number.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know what the number is, but I'll
- 5:01Speaker 1: just tell you that's much easier. I think you're able
- 5:04Speaker 1: to just play with a little bit of ease knowing
- 5:09Speaker 1: that you're playing against an opponent that just can't really
- 5:11Speaker 1: do anything against you right and and you know the
- 5:14Speaker 1: toughest obviously is when you're playing and you have you
- 5:16Speaker 1: can do multiple things what do you what do you
- 5:18Speaker 1: prepare for a lot of times you prepare for these
- 5:20Speaker 1: lower you just can't there's nothing they can do really
- 5:23Speaker 1: that gets you into trouble and then you can physically
- 5:26Speaker 1: wear them out right and so we know that when
- 5:28Speaker 1: you're tired you just don't play football is really anything
- 5:31Speaker 1: as well when you're tired so I think that all
- 5:33Speaker 1: plays a role in it, right? It's just easier when
- 5:36Speaker 1: you play teams that aren't as good. This is why–
- 5:38Speaker 1: I'm glad you mentioned the stats, right? Because I think
- 5:42Speaker 1: week one and week two and some of these earlier games,
- 5:44Speaker 1: it's not about the score. It's about how the game went, right?
- 5:48Speaker 1: So I did not watch Utah play very much, so
- 5:51Speaker 1: I can't really give you a great idea about what
- 5:54Speaker 1: Utah did. So Oregon obviously won by seven. But the
- 5:57Speaker 1: average eight yards of play on offense– Their offensive line
- 6:00Speaker 1: was great. I think Dalton was hit just once the
- 6:03Speaker 1: entire game. They ran the ball for five or six
- 6:06Speaker 1: yards to carry. Defensively, they allowed less than five yards
- 6:08Speaker 1: to play. They had three sacks. They had something like
- 6:10Speaker 1: 20 pressures. They had a couple of really bad plays, right?
- 6:14Speaker 1: The boys, they sit on a screen that was just
- 6:16Speaker 1: kind of, I thought, unacceptable defense by Oregon. Like, there
- 6:20Speaker 1: were some bad plays, certainly, but all the numbers, Sean,
- 6:25Speaker 1: pointed to Oregon playing probably pretty well. And so that's
- 6:29Speaker 1: why I'm not really like concerned. I'm like, oh, okay, well,
- 6:31Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, they didn't win by a lot, but
- 6:34Speaker 1: the numbers sort of told you that game was a
- 6:36Speaker 1: lot better. I mean, when you, you know, when Boise State,
- 6:39Speaker 1: it's time to throw the ball at the end of
- 6:41Speaker 1: the game and you hit the quarterback like four straight
- 6:43Speaker 1: plays in a row, that's pretty good. Like, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 1: so I think this is what these early games are.
- 6:49Speaker 1: They're just sort of, I think, just an idea of
- 6:51Speaker 1: where you are as a team, what to work on.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Final score to me is not really as important than
- 6:57Speaker 1: what I see as sort of the things I look
- 6:59Speaker 1: at as far as important numbers of the game.
- 7:04Speaker 3: The leap from week one to week two.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Especially for an offensive line that played several combinations. We saw,
- 7:14Speaker 2: we've talked, you and I've talked a lot about Kelvin Obot,
- 7:16Speaker 2: by the way.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Yeah. Left guard in the game. Played well.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Was that a surprise left guard?
- 7:22Speaker 3: No, not for me.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Oregon came out with an entirely different offensive line than
- 7:26Speaker 1: anyone thought would be week one, so it was kind
- 7:28Speaker 1: of a shock.
- 7:30Speaker 3: That's interesting.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Utah, it was kind of what people expected it would be,
- 7:35Speaker 2: and then they inserted Obot at left guard pretty quickly,
- 7:40Speaker 2: and they had two guys that didn't play at all
- 7:43Speaker 2: that were considered kind of in the mix, and one
- 7:47Speaker 2: of them, I think it's because of an injury, I
- 7:49Speaker 2: don't know about the other one, so Obat's best competition
- 7:54Speaker 2: for that left guard spot is a guy who didn't
- 7:56Speaker 2: play in week one, in my opinion.
- 7:58Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens moving forward.
- 8:00Speaker 2: But that unit has to look a lot better against
- 8:03Speaker 2: Arkansas than they did. Arkansas has got a defensive end
- 8:07Speaker 2: who's a projected first-round pick. So you're going to, especially
- 8:10Speaker 2: your tackles, probably going to have to be a heck
- 8:11Speaker 2: of a lot better.
- 8:12Speaker 3: What kind of leap should we expect in one week?
- 8:17Speaker 1: You always say week one to week two is a
- 8:20Speaker 1: big leap in production, right? And part of that is
- 8:22Speaker 1: you just understand game speed now. You understand what it
- 8:26Speaker 1: takes to play the entire 60 minutes. It takes to
- 8:29Speaker 1: play 70 plays, what it feels like when things aren't
- 8:32Speaker 1: going as well as you want them to go. I mean,
- 8:35Speaker 1: all those things you don't really know until you actually
- 8:36Speaker 1: get an opportunity to feel those things on a Saturday.
- 8:40Speaker 1: And so you understand them a lot better. especially when
- 8:42Speaker 1: you're young, heading into week two, and you also get
- 8:44Speaker 1: an idea as a coach. I mean, there's a lot
- 8:45Speaker 1: of things you think are going to happen in a game, right? Okay,
- 8:47Speaker 1: this guy's done this in practice, and you get to
- 8:50Speaker 1: a game, and they're better or they're worse. They can
- 8:53Speaker 1: be worse, too. Absolutely can be worse. And so you
- 8:56Speaker 1: can make changes between week one and week two. Okay,
- 8:58Speaker 1: this worked. This didn't work. I thought he'd be good
- 9:00Speaker 1: at this, and he wasn't good at this. Let's do this.
- 9:02Speaker 1: And there's a lot of things you can change between
- 9:04Speaker 1: week one and night. You can change sometimes is getting
- 9:06Speaker 1: your butt kicked. That's something you just can't do sometimes.
- 9:10Speaker 1: There are times when you're just– You got your butt whooped, man.
- 9:13Speaker 1: That's just football. But schematics, confidence is huge, right? Just confidence,
- 9:19Speaker 1: getting a chance to play and know what it feels
- 9:22Speaker 1: like to play in a college football game and get
- 9:23Speaker 1: your legs back underneath you. So you see a lot
- 9:26Speaker 1: of improvement between week one and week two. And for Utah,
- 9:29Speaker 1: of course, you're playing a much– Arkansas is going to
- 9:32Speaker 1: be better. They're not great. They'll be better all over
- 9:35Speaker 1: the place. So the first couple of drives, it'll be
- 9:38Speaker 1: interesting to see sort of how they start out.
- 9:43Speaker 2: All right, let's talk about the biggest game of the weekend.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Didn't think it was going to be the biggest game
- 9:47Speaker 2: of the weekend, but conversationally, the Kyle Whittingham debut at
- 9:52Speaker 2: Michigan ended up being the most controversial thing we've seen
- 9:55Speaker 2: in recent years.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I don't want to lead the witness at all. What
- 9:59Speaker 3: is your take?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Okay. So my take, I think, is quite about the controversy,
- 10:05Speaker 1: just Michigan in general.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Well, give me all of it, but especially the ending.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I mean, Bryce Underwood is not long for the job.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I think that's very clear, right? I mean, Kyle Whittingham
- 10:13Speaker 1: basically said that in a press conference. And I was
- 10:15Speaker 1: thinking about this the other day when it came to
- 10:19Speaker 1: this topic. So how many coaches that got new jobs
- 10:25Speaker 1: didn't get to decide the quarterback that they got to keep?
- 10:30Speaker 1: No one?
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, no one, basically.
- 10:33Speaker 1: It feels like Kyle Whittingham was given, Bryson was like,
- 10:38Speaker 1: you have to make this work because they paid him
- 10:39Speaker 1: so much money.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Okay, so I think you're right.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I also, because the Utah lens on this is they took.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Who they thought was the best wide receiver. They took
- 10:51Speaker 2: who they thought was the best corner. They took the
- 10:53Speaker 2: best pass rusher. And we all felt like, oh, for
- 10:57Speaker 2: sure they're going to take either Devin Dampier or Bird Ficklin.
- 11:02Speaker 2: And it sounds like both of those guys got talked to,
- 11:05Speaker 2: but that the pursuit of neither was... There wasn't real
- 11:09Speaker 2: hardcore overtures for Michigan to get either of those guys.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And I'm curious as to why, especially in the case
- 11:16Speaker 2: of Bird Ficklin, who... By the way, I think probably
- 11:19Speaker 2: got a call on Sunday morning, like, you're going to
- 11:21Speaker 2: be a Wolverine next year.
- 11:24Speaker 1: But whatever.
- 11:26Speaker 3: I'm really curious as to why.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And I think it falls into what you're saying, that
- 11:31Speaker 2: Michigan had already decided, we paid for this kid. He's
- 11:34Speaker 2: your guy. Succeed with him as the starting quarterback. But
- 11:38Speaker 2: you would still want to add depth.
- 11:40Speaker 3: And I don't know. I'm just curious.
- 11:43Speaker 1: But my point is, like, there's no– Kyle Whitton has
- 11:46Speaker 1: no attachment to him.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Correct.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Right? He's not... So that's why I think he's just like, well,
- 11:51Speaker 1: he's not good. Like, you're just done. Like, we're just
- 11:54Speaker 1: not going to... Why would I keep you as my quarterback?
- 11:56Speaker 3: Right?
- 11:57Speaker 1: So I think he's done. Look, Michigan scored in the
- 11:59Speaker 1: first half of the game and then did not get
- 12:02Speaker 1: inside Western Michigan territory to the final snap of the game,
- 12:05Speaker 1: which was the Hail Mary and the second Hail Mary.
- 12:08Speaker 1: So the Hail Mary.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Okay.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Do I think the Big Ten... basically cheated. The answer
- 12:17Speaker 1: is no. I think that obviously it was this footage,
- 12:22Speaker 1: this clock they used, that showed there was one second
- 12:25Speaker 1: left on the clock. I believe it. I don't think
- 12:26Speaker 1: that they made it up, Sean, right? There's no conspiracy
- 12:29Speaker 1: to help Michigan here. The thing that I think is
- 12:33Speaker 1: that would they have done the same thing for Western Michigan?
- 12:36Speaker 3: No. No.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I don't think. Oh, no, no, no. The clock is right.
- 12:43Speaker 1: The NBC clock, or whatever clock it was going to be, right?
- 12:47Speaker 1: They just would have made it that way. That would
- 12:49Speaker 1: have been the right feed. So that's the question I
- 12:53Speaker 1: have on that angle, right? Would they have done this
- 12:55Speaker 1: for Western? But then, I'm sure, have you seen today
- 13:01Speaker 1: what the Mac put out?
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so we just read that, their statement, that the
- 13:06Speaker 2: Mac is seeking to have this win vacated.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Right, so this is, like, totally fascinating. So the Mac
- 13:14Speaker 1: has announced that they did not follow the protocols that
- 13:21Speaker 1: were put in place for replay review, and they would
- 13:23Speaker 1: like the win essentially vacated. Sean, super fascinating, because what
- 13:29Speaker 1: if they're right? Like, do they vacate the win?
- 13:34Speaker 3: Uh.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I mean, I guess if they didn't follow the protocols,
- 13:39Speaker 1: they probably would have to, right? I mean, like, I don't,
- 13:43Speaker 1: I'm so fascinated by this because it's a very black
- 13:48Speaker 1: and white thing, right? You either follow the rules or
- 13:50Speaker 1: you do not. If you didn't, there was no time
- 13:52Speaker 1: left on the clock. So you have lost the game.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Would they do that? Or would they just say, I'm sorry, like,
- 14:00Speaker 1: we screwed up. We're not changing the result of the game.
- 14:01Speaker 3: It's not one of those things.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Where it's like, a question of whether or not there's
- 14:07Speaker 1: a black and gray area, right? It's like black and white.
- 14:10Speaker 1: It's like they either screwed up and there was a
- 14:12Speaker 1: second left to be not second left or it was
- 14:14Speaker 1: done right. There's a second left. I'm very curious what
- 14:17Speaker 1: happens here.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Well, I don't think that Michigan is going to be
- 14:20Speaker 2: asked to vacate the wind. I think that, well, there'll
- 14:23Speaker 2: be asked us to do it. Well, I don't, I
- 14:25Speaker 2: don't think that the NCAA is going to come up
- 14:26Speaker 2: with that decision. Nothing that has happened in the last
- 14:31Speaker 2: several decades, but especially these last few years, uh, indicate
- 14:35Speaker 2: to me that Western Michigan is going to be treated
- 14:38Speaker 2: the same way as Michigan or Notre Dame or Ohio
- 14:41Speaker 2: state or Oregon or Utah or BYU, right? There's, there's
- 14:46Speaker 2: clearly a hierarchy to whose needs the NCAA feels like
- 14:49Speaker 2: they want to serve first. And Western Michigan is not
- 14:52Speaker 2: near the top of that hierarchy.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I agree with you there. Sorry about that. My daughter
- 14:57Speaker 1: walked in. Um, I agree with you there. Um, So
- 15:02Speaker 1: you think they might just say, like, oops, we messed up,
- 15:04Speaker 1: we're not changing the result of the game?
- 15:05Speaker 2: I don't know what they're going to say, because it's
- 15:08Speaker 2: one of these things, right, where you've got a significant
- 15:11Speaker 2: portion of the public that says, there was no time left,
- 15:15Speaker 2: we all watched it on our television. And then I
- 15:18Speaker 2: think the Big Ten did a pretty darn good job
- 15:20Speaker 2: of being like, well, here's transparency in our replay review.
- 15:24Speaker 2: And you can see in this, in their view, in
- 15:26Speaker 2: their angle, there is time left on the clock. So...
- 15:31Speaker 2: It's like one of these things where you're like, all right, well, intellectually,
- 15:35Speaker 2: I acknowledge that there was time on the clock, according
- 15:39Speaker 2: to this particular view. Emotionally, I'm like, nobody even knew
- 15:45Speaker 2: that that clock existed two days ago. We only know
- 15:48Speaker 2: about that because of this controversy. I legitimately had no
- 15:51Speaker 2: idea that those two clocks were anything different from one another.
- 15:56Speaker 2: And so now I'm like, all right, well, if I
- 15:59Speaker 2: believe what I saw from the Big Ten's angle in
- 16:01Speaker 2: the replay review, I'm like, yeah, there was a little
- 16:05Speaker 2: time left.
- 16:05Speaker 3: So I guess they deserve to have that next play,
- 16:10Speaker 3: that mulligan.
- 16:12Speaker 2: But also I'm like, well, hold on a minute, because
- 16:14Speaker 2: Western Michigan would not have been given the same flexibility.
- 16:18Speaker 2: And Utah would not have been given the same flexibility.
- 16:21Speaker 2: And it's only because it's this bad. mega brand yeah
- 16:24Speaker 2: that we're having this conversation so i don't know how
- 16:26Speaker 2: people will come out on it but i just can't
- 16:29Speaker 2: imagine doing something so unprecedented over what ultimately like they'll
- 16:33Speaker 2: probably say uh the officials handled it wrong so they're
- 16:36Speaker 2: suspended because they're the ones who were supposed to adjudicate
- 16:39Speaker 2: it i don't.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Know yeah um i i do also you'll think that
- 16:45Speaker 1: um that it's I know conferences have moved for more transparency.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I think the big 12 has done this as well.
- 16:53Speaker 1: The ACC, like this would have been great to hear
- 16:55Speaker 1: this in real time. Like that would have been a great,
- 16:58Speaker 1: I think a great thing for all of us. And
- 17:00Speaker 1: I do wonder if this, if this sort of helps
- 17:04Speaker 1: move all conferences to do this.
- 17:07Speaker 3: I think that's right. NFL season begins. Oh wait, no, no, no.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Before I move on from this, you go back in
- 17:14Speaker 2: your own career, you get, one more, you get one
- 17:17Speaker 2: more Mulligan play like Michigan got game decider last second,
- 17:23Speaker 2: whatever a play that somebody either did or did not
- 17:26Speaker 2: get a penalty on. What is one play that if
- 17:29Speaker 2: you could go back and replay it and get the
- 17:32Speaker 2: opposite result, you think you would have won something important?
- 17:35Speaker 1: Uh, I think if, if I can, if I could
- 17:38Speaker 1: take back the play genetics and hurt his neon.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Okay.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I would take back. I think in, in my, in actuality. So,
- 17:46Speaker 1: In college, what play did I take back? We fumbled
- 17:50Speaker 1: the ball out of the end zone to lose to Cal.
- 17:52Speaker 1: We were 8-1 that year. That would have made us 9-0.
- 17:55Speaker 1: But then Dennis got hurt, so it didn't really matter
- 17:57Speaker 1: in the end. That was obviously a pretty important play
- 18:03Speaker 1: because we could have been undefeated, which would have been
- 18:04Speaker 1: a lot of fun. Michael... Dyer's knee being down or
- 18:09Speaker 1: whatever his ankle not being down. Can we redo that
- 18:11Speaker 1: play and give us actually him being down? I don't
- 18:14Speaker 1: know how many plays in my career I'd want to
- 18:16Speaker 1: redo on.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Is the SEC going to vote LSU out? The vote
- 18:23Speaker 3: about the island.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Ah, geez. I think this is just, and the SEC
- 18:31Speaker 1: just wants, doesn't want a little bit of control, right?
- 18:35Speaker 1: This is basically what it is. Like, can we just
- 18:37Speaker 1: enforce our own rules, please? They're not throwing LSU out,
- 18:42Speaker 1: but I think they just want the ability to say,
- 18:44Speaker 1: we run our own league and the court system can
- 18:46Speaker 1: knock it in the way here.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's a pretty reasonable request.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Do you think that every state, do you think Utah
- 18:55Speaker 1: could find a judge in Utah that would give them
- 18:57Speaker 1: the rulings they want? Or do you think it's just
- 18:58Speaker 1: a thing that just happens in the South?
- 19:01Speaker 3: Ooh, that's a good question.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I think that the schools here could find a judge
- 19:07Speaker 2: to give them the ruling they wanted.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Could BYU do it?
- 19:11Speaker 3: Well, I think especially BYU could do it.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I think that, but also because if it were anything
- 19:16Speaker 2: that opposed, you know, put those two against one another,
- 19:20Speaker 2: if it were like, hey, BYU wants this and Utah doesn't,
- 19:24Speaker 2: you will find a judge on either side that's going
- 19:26Speaker 2: to grant the injunction or forward the motion just to
- 19:30Speaker 2: spite the other.
- 19:32Speaker 1: What about Weber State?
- 19:34Speaker 3: Probably not quite as successful.
- 19:36Speaker 1: How are the Wildcats doing this year?
- 19:38Speaker 3: They're 1-0. They've got a game against Colorado coming up. Oh.
- 19:44Speaker 1: The Buffs off of bye week?
- 19:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:47Speaker 1: No, the Buffs are off. They played Thursday.
- 19:49Speaker 3: They played Thursday.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Such a long time ago.
- 19:54Speaker 2: So, yeah, our former high school coach that actually, my
- 19:59Speaker 2: sophomore year, he was our wide receivers coach. And Eric
- 20:03Speaker 2: Kerr is now the head man at Weber State. Oh,
- 20:05Speaker 2: they're 1-1.
- 20:06Speaker 3: I lied. They're 1-1.
- 20:07Speaker 2: They lost to Southern Utah, which is not a good
- 20:10Speaker 2: loss for Weber State.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Oh, no?
- 20:12Speaker 3: No.
- 20:13Speaker 2: They beat Northern Colorado, then they lost a close one
- 20:15Speaker 2: to Southern Utah. And now they've got Colorado and then,
- 20:19Speaker 2: of course, Northwestern State.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Ooh, yikes.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Are they good or bad?
- 20:23Speaker 3: I have no idea. The NFL starts tomorrow night.
- 20:28Speaker 1: That's weird. That's weird.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Um.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Let's start with that first game, Patriots-Seahawks.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Are the Seahawks going to be a Super Bowl contender
- 20:37Speaker 2: this year, or are they going to have that hangover
- 20:39Speaker 2: that most Super Bowl teams do?
- 20:40Speaker 1: Either they're definitely a contender or they're winning again, but
- 20:44Speaker 1: I think that coaching staff is really, really good. I
- 20:47Speaker 1: think the team only lost two starters from the Super Bowl,
- 20:49Speaker 1: and that's one of them, the running back, and I
- 20:51Speaker 1: think they lost Durant, right, the cornerback or safety. So
- 20:55Speaker 1: they returned most of the team. Now I think it's
- 20:57Speaker 1: fair to question, without Clint Kubiak there, what does the
- 21:00Speaker 1: offense look like? We saw that with Ben Johnson leaving
- 21:04Speaker 1: Detroit last year. It was just a little bit worse.
- 21:07Speaker 1: But I think they're still an absolute contender because they
- 21:09Speaker 1: have a good quarterback, a really good defense, a great
- 21:12Speaker 1: young head coach. To me, it's really just what does
- 21:16Speaker 1: the offense look like without their superstar play caller as
- 21:21Speaker 1: their man anymore. So I think that they'll just be good.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I don't think they'll win the Super Bowl this year,
- 21:27Speaker 1: but they're going to be a playoff team.
- 21:30Speaker 2: There's this viral video going around of the rugby coach
- 21:33Speaker 2: teaching Miles Garrett how to hit.
- 21:35Speaker 1: I saw that.
- 21:36Speaker 2: And this guy, I've seen him doing stuff with a
- 21:38Speaker 2: bunch of, the algorithm feeds me this dude way too much.
- 21:41Speaker 1: I'm sure.
- 21:44Speaker 2: If you had, I guess it's tougher for offensive linemen,
- 21:47Speaker 2: but how would you respond to Billy Coffey coming in
- 21:52Speaker 2: and being like, he's supposed to do it.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I've thought about this, about the algorithm, like, If Meredith
- 21:59Speaker 1: went onto my phone and looked at my algorithm, what
- 22:01Speaker 1: would she think about it versus what would I think
- 22:03Speaker 1: about her algorithm?
- 22:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Would she just look at like, oh, there's a bunch
- 22:06Speaker 1: of videos of steak being cooked.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Yes.
- 22:10Speaker 1: And maybe there's some women in bikinis. Those are sort
- 22:14Speaker 1: of probably the two options that are there. There's some
- 22:18Speaker 1: softball season. There's softball, like how to snap the ball
- 22:22Speaker 1: better and stuff like that on my feed. Or there's
- 22:25Speaker 1: NFL highlights or anything. Like, hers is probably just a
- 22:27Speaker 1: disaster feed. I want no part of it. Have you
- 22:30Speaker 1: thought about that ever? Do you ever think about that?
- 22:31Speaker 1: Just me.
- 22:33Speaker 2: No, I've had that, actually, where my wife is like,
- 22:35Speaker 2: let me see your phone. And she's, like, looking, doing something,
- 22:39Speaker 2: usually trying to find her phone because she can never
- 22:41Speaker 2: find it.
- 22:42Speaker 3: So she's like, let me see your phone. And I've
- 22:43Speaker 3: got whatever Instagram pulled up. And she's like, oh, really?
- 22:46Speaker 3: This is what you're looking at?
- 22:47Speaker 1: I'm like, it's the algorithm. The algorithm. I just don't care.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I'm like, yes, I'm looking at her. Yes, she looks good.
- 22:53Speaker 3: It's dogs.
- 22:55Speaker 2: It's like animal attack videos from people on safari.
- 23:00Speaker 3: It's food stuff.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I have a lot of German Shepherd videos, and I've
- 23:05Speaker 1: realized that every German Shepherd is the same. I paid
- 23:07Speaker 1: a lot of money for mine. It's the exact same
- 23:08Speaker 1: as every other German Shepherd. Genius. My wife doesn't have
- 23:16Speaker 1: a phone problem, but I have a question for you.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Let me end with this. I know we're running long here.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Do you have, like, a phone tracker on your wife?
- 23:24Speaker 1: Because I don't track my wife's phone, and I feel
- 23:26Speaker 1: like I'm in the extreme. She doesn't have one on me.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I don't have one on her. We have them for
- 23:31Speaker 1: our kids and their Apple Watches and, like, their backpacks
- 23:34Speaker 1: and stuff. But I don't track my wife's location. I
- 23:36Speaker 1: have no idea where she is at any given point
- 23:38Speaker 1: of the day.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Yeah, no.
- 23:39Speaker 2: So we do this specifically because my wife can never
- 23:44Speaker 2: find her phone. Okay. she will be like, where's my phone?
- 23:49Speaker 2: And she'll take my phone and find out where her
- 23:51Speaker 2: phone is.
- 23:51Speaker 1: But if it's in the house, it doesn't say what
- 23:54Speaker 1: room it's in.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but you can play the little alert. If you've
- 24:01Speaker 2: got the find my.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Sure, yeah. I think Meredith likes a little secrecy. And
- 24:06Speaker 1: that's just because she doesn't want me to know she's
- 24:08Speaker 1: at work or something. I mean, not that I would
- 24:09Speaker 1: ever check it, but people think it's the oddest thing ever.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I have no idea. I don't have any find my
- 24:15Speaker 1: phone or whatever service that is on her phone. I
- 24:16Speaker 1: have no idea at any time where she is. I mean,
- 24:18Speaker 1: I assume she's at work, but like, I don't know.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I've got, uh, I know where, I know where my
- 24:24Speaker 2: wife's phone is at least whether she's with it or
- 24:27Speaker 2: not is another question.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I think she's probably with it. I would imagine.
- 24:31Speaker 3: It just depends.
- 24:34Speaker 1: If she got her, her, uh, bar mitzvah outfit yet ready.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Not yet. Not yet. We've got plenty of time. We've
- 24:40Speaker 3: got to save the date though. All right, buddy.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Any last words? No. Is your game early this week?
- 24:48Speaker 3: No, it's a night game. Oh, they're going to watch it.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Sweet.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Arkansas is crying about it because it's 9-15 Central.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Their coach is like, we don't know how to get
- 24:57Speaker 3: our bodies ready because we're going to be coming out
- 24:59Speaker 3: of halftime at midnight.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Don't talk bad about Ryan Silverfield. He's my guy.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I'm talking bad about him. He's crying.
- 25:05Speaker 1: My daughter's softball game is at noon on Saturday, and
- 25:08Speaker 1: Oregon plays at noon as well. Is it okay to
- 25:10Speaker 1: have my iPad on? Like on the game in the dugout?
- 25:13Speaker 1: 100% yes. Okay, that's what I thought. I'm not even
- 25:16Speaker 1: going to stand.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Pay close attention when she's batting.
- 25:20Speaker 1: To her or to Oregon?
- 25:22Speaker 3: To her.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Okay, sounds good.
- 25:31Speaker 3: You're the man. Thanks, Jeff. All right, that's Jeff Schwartz.
