Transcript
- 0:00Aloha. Sunday morning. Trade winds are ramping up, and a Small Craft Advisory is in effect through Monday evening.
- 1:42Today, expect moderate to strong, gusty winds and scattered showers on windward slopes and inland areas. Leeward sides stay mostly dry — good news if you're beach-bound on the protected side. Watch for minor coastal flooding during afternoon high tides in low-lying areas, especially tomorrow and Tuesday.
- 1:57Ocean conditions are rough. Oʻahu's north and south shores are running 4.4 feet — moderate surf with strong shore break and rip currents. Kauaʻi's at 6.1 feet and best left to experienced swimmers and surfers. Maui and the Big Island are calmer — Kāʻanapali is 3 feet, Hapuna is 1.5 feet.
- 2:12Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is at advisory level due to Kīlauea activity — stay alert for volcanic ash in downwind areas. Three trails and roads are closed: Kahuku Unit roads, Kīpukapuaulu Trail due to hazardous trees, and the Lava Tube Bridge is under replacement. The park itself is open; check the site for specifics before you head up.
- 2:29If you're planning a lei-making workshop while you're here, our new piece breaks down where visitors can drop in for a hands-on class, what you'll actually make, and how to fit a quiet cultural hour into a busy trip. It's a nice counterweight to a packed itinerary — you walk away with something you made yourself, not something you bought.
- 2:46By late this week, winds ease and showers should drop off, with drier conditions possible by weekend. Forecasters are watching tropical activity in the distant Pacific, but it's too early to know if it affects Hawaii.
- 2:57If you're beach-bound today, stick to leeward and protected shores. Full piece on lei-making workshops is on the site. Catch you tomorrow.
