Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All Star Toyota presents Off the Bench with Jacob Hester
- 0:04Speaker 1: and Matt Flynn.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Okay, here we go where.
- 0:07Speaker 1: The players get broken down and Science gets denied to
- 0:10Speaker 1: come off the bench. Hour two of Off the Bench
- 0:13Speaker 1: Live from the Mercedes Benz Baton Rouge Studio starts now.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Walk back in, Oh tb Alburt number two. I got
- 0:34Speaker 3: a feeling. I know how this conversation is going to go.
- 0:37Speaker 4: But it was in the news yesterday that apparently LSU
- 0:41Speaker 4: and LU Football are toying with the idea of adding
- 0:46Speaker 4: a logo to their jersey, and it would be a
- 0:49Speaker 4: company logo like you see in the NBA, like you
- 0:53Speaker 4: see in professional soccer.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Now soccer obviously is different.
- 0:57Speaker 4: I mean they've pay millions upon millions to have basically
- 1:01Speaker 4: their logo is the team logo on the jersey. You
- 1:04Speaker 4: got a small badge. This would be I'm sure a
- 1:08Speaker 4: jersey patch. It'd be somewhere on the shoulder. It would
- 1:11Speaker 4: be small, probably be the same size as the Nike
- 1:15Speaker 4: check on the jersey. And the report said it would
- 1:19Speaker 4: be to help LSU raise money to pay their athletes.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Because we all know what the settlement, it's going to
- 1:26Speaker 4: be a little bit over twenty million dollars per year
- 1:29Speaker 4: for the athletic department. How do we feel about the
- 1:33Speaker 4: potential of LSU football throwing a company's logo on their
- 1:39Speaker 4: historic jerseys.
- 1:40Speaker 2: You better watch out because old man take incoming. So
- 1:49Speaker 2: I know, I feel like I'm driving really slow. It
- 1:52Speaker 2: is coming. Let me start with this. So I think
- 1:57Speaker 2: we're all for staying ahead of the curve when it
- 2:00Speaker 2: comes to nil, making sure that we secure good players. Uh,
- 2:05Speaker 2: in every other sport, not every other sport, but a
- 2:09Speaker 2: lot of other sports do it? Jacob skewed because he
- 2:12Speaker 2: watches European sports a lot, they certainly do it.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Uh.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Nascar cars have logos and sponsors all over that. Golf, yes,
- 2:23Speaker 2: but it's golf. Yes, but they have to wear a
- 2:27Speaker 2: shirt and a hat.
- 2:30Speaker 3: It's a spot.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I mean, it's a it's different. It's not like a
- 2:34Speaker 2: I believe it's different.
- 2:35Speaker 3: The bag's got seventy two logos on it.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The bag, Okay, the bag? Maybe? Yeah? All right?
- 2:41Speaker 4: Every sport so except football Baseball big advertisements now Major
- 2:48Speaker 4: League Baseball on their sleeves.
- 2:50Speaker 2: He didn't realize that I don't watch Major League Baseball.
- 2:54Speaker 4: But isn't the aschos on of it is anymore a
- 2:57Speaker 4: landre like oxy clean, Like wasn't it for a while?
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah it was.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a mattress bag now is it really? I
- 3:04Speaker 2: don't know. Probably yeah.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Basically football is different to me because like the NFL's
- 3:11Speaker 4: practice jerseys even that's what I was gonna say, was
- 3:14Speaker 4: our practice jerseys in in Green Bay, and that gets
- 3:18Speaker 4: as much viewership eyeballs on it, especially like training camp times,
- 3:22Speaker 4: Like every picture you get is what it's like.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I'd be all for that Bellen Healthcare, which is like
- 3:29Speaker 2: the big healthcare.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Provider up in We were Buick for the Broncos.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Just classic Classic should have been Toyota.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Baiting that he had a Buick deal.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Hey, coach, we're gonna go ahead and put these Buick
- 3:43Speaker 2: logos on all of our jerseys. They're giving me a
- 3:45Speaker 2: pretty good deal in a car. Okay, So, uh, I
- 3:50Speaker 2: guess first opinion is I hate it. I hate the
- 3:53Speaker 2: thought of it. Uh. Our classic jersey, we're just looking
- 3:56Speaker 2: at nuts here, just being a baller. Our classic jersey
- 4:00Speaker 2: has the LSU, which is nice, small not it's classy.
- 4:05Speaker 3: We didn't wouldn't have that LSU when we play so.
- 4:07Speaker 2: The logo whatever it is, whatever it ends up being,
- 4:12Speaker 2: is going to be bigger than the LSU on the jersey.
- 4:15Speaker 2: The font's going to be bigger. So you're going to
- 4:17Speaker 2: read that, you know, more than you're going to read
- 4:19Speaker 2: the lsue. I just hate that it has got to
- 4:23Speaker 2: this point now. I'm sure after a couple of years
- 4:26Speaker 2: of doing it, if it passes a couple years doing
- 4:28Speaker 2: we wanted the.
- 4:28Speaker 3: N Cuba, that is a caveat to the n Cuba
- 4:31Speaker 3: has to approve this first.
- 4:32Speaker 2: They have power in something.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Sort of Wow, it's first time I've heard them.
- 4:36Speaker 2: But like if they deny it, could we do it anyway? Then,
- 4:38Speaker 2: just sue at the stay low probably yeah, yeah, so
- 4:41Speaker 2: we can do it. So yeah, I think it's Uh,
- 4:45Speaker 2: I don't. I don't like it at all. Uh one
- 4:48Speaker 2: of those things if it happened a couple of years later,
- 4:51Speaker 2: we wouldn't really notice it, but like this is it's
- 4:54Speaker 2: I think college football fans are getting so much changed
- 4:57Speaker 2: so fast, Like it changed from amateur to professional. Know
- 5:00Speaker 2: now it's like we got revenue sharing like it was
- 5:02Speaker 2: the wild Wild West. It's still kind of is, but
- 5:04Speaker 2: at least there's like some sort of rules coming into
- 5:06Speaker 2: play now with the REV share and like in a
- 5:09Speaker 2: maximum amount of expenditures that you can use. And I
- 5:12Speaker 2: know people are you know, tightening their belts on budgets
- 5:16Speaker 2: on different aspects of athletics so they can afford to
- 5:22Speaker 2: go out and pay players and attract good But there's
- 5:25Speaker 2: other ways to do it. You know, they do have
- 5:29Speaker 2: to go spend more on players and to allow you know,
- 5:33Speaker 2: the people, the higher ups to still make their same
- 5:35Speaker 2: amount of money, I guess. But yeah, I think the
- 5:38Speaker 2: practice jersey would have been, let's just dip our toe
- 5:41Speaker 2: in it a little bit instead of putting it on
- 5:43Speaker 2: our classic uniforms, our classic college football. So like college
- 5:47Speaker 2: fans were dealing with so much change, let's not slap
- 5:49Speaker 2: us in the face this.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Fast A Landra Tata, how do we feel about this?
- 5:54Speaker 2: I hate it?
- 5:55Speaker 6: Well, on football Saturdays, I'm not watching a NASCAR race,
- 5:58Speaker 6: I'm watching a football team. So nope, I'm out all right.
- 6:01Speaker 6: And I know what you're saying, Well, that gives more
- 6:03Speaker 6: money to LSU. I don't get any money out of it.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I don't care, Laudre.
- 6:09Speaker 7: I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't like it from
- 6:12Speaker 7: like a just general standpoint. It has nothing to do
- 6:16Speaker 7: with like football, Like, I'm just kind of sick of
- 6:19Speaker 7: ads being in my face twenty four to seven, Like
- 6:22Speaker 7: someone is always trying to sell you something. Your phone
- 6:25Speaker 7: listens to what you're saying because it's trying to push
- 6:29Speaker 7: stuff to get you to buy it. Like I'm just
- 6:31Speaker 7: sick of that kind of stuff. But I do get
- 6:36Speaker 7: raising money for a better program or whatever, but like
- 6:41Speaker 7: I'm just so sick of all the consumerism stuff.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, there's there's ways to raise money.
- 6:46Speaker 6: I mean games are already four hours because of all
- 6:48Speaker 6: the commercials. To her point, like ads are thrown in
- 6:51Speaker 6: our face constantly.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Good have like drink drink my High.
- 6:54Speaker 7: Yeah, drink my High.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I put that okay, I was about saying you're good
- 6:58Speaker 2: with my High. Like, let's replace the numbers with just
- 7:01Speaker 2: the behigh logo. What about the just the LSU logo?
- 7:04Speaker 2: Take that off on the helmet, take the right side
- 7:06Speaker 2: off smart.
- 7:09Speaker 4: So our boy Devin Snow aka hold the Mayo put
- 7:13Speaker 4: out some odds to who the company would be to
- 7:18Speaker 4: be on LSU's jersey.
- 7:20Speaker 7: Gordon has the best ones.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Second best, oh really second pains canes. So he goes
- 7:26Speaker 4: raising Canes minus two fifty Gordon McKernon minus one point
- 7:31Speaker 4: fifteen walk Ons plus one hundred, Labar's plus two hundred,
- 7:37Speaker 4: Fred's plus two fifty Community Coffee plus four hundred, Mike
- 7:42Speaker 4: Anderson's plus five hundred, Benny's car Wash plus six hundred
- 7:48Speaker 4: Zippies plus eight hundred and the long shot Hungry Howie's
- 7:53Speaker 4: plus twelve hundred Benny's.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Is your best odds there? For sure. They got they
- 7:59Speaker 2: got some.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Think if you're like, if you're a bet and you
- 8:01Speaker 4: want to get some actual juice, I think Community Coffee
- 8:04Speaker 4: plus four hundred.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah, because Creut Coffee got that money.
- 8:07Speaker 7: Yeah, Like that's what I was thinking. That is like
- 8:11Speaker 7: some of those places don't really advertise, like Fred's doesn't advertise.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I don't really see them exactly. Yeah, that's what Freds
- 8:17Speaker 2: would be like the coolest one that I think. There's
- 8:20Speaker 2: probably another company that's probably like minus.
- 8:24Speaker 7: Like some industrial steel company or something.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And familiar. I'm very familiar with their you know, their
- 8:34Speaker 2: with their game, their their game, but their company, their
- 8:38Speaker 2: relationship with you know, l SU. It's it would be power.
- 8:44Speaker 3: That's yeah, we can't stand for that.
- 8:49Speaker 2: We can't say no, we got to get my high.
- 8:51Speaker 3: We can't stand for that. That can't happen.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Howard, AD's better than Gatorade because gators in the title
- 8:57Speaker 4: of Gatorade.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Well yeah yeah, but you know, because you're better than
- 9:04Speaker 2: that doesn't really meant you.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, I know, I know, I know. Whyt
- 9:08Speaker 3: you just do my high on New Jersey.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, I'm sure that I would pass compliance.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I like buying the helmet, Yeah, just take the whole helmet.
- 9:16Speaker 4: If fate they start putting decals on helmets, well I
- 9:23Speaker 4: my stand is I'm okay with it for practice. If
- 9:27Speaker 4: you want to do it during practice again, you go back.
- 9:29Speaker 4: And we've been doing this in the NFL for thirteen
- 9:34Speaker 4: seasons now, so this has been a thing. NFL jerseys
- 9:39Speaker 4: don't have logos. The NBA does, MLB does MLS does,
- 9:43Speaker 4: every NHL does not.
- 9:45Speaker 3: I don't believe so.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Like, but you've got a lot of the major sports
- 9:49Speaker 4: that that have done this, and so unfortunately, I think
- 9:54Speaker 4: it is inevitable that at some point it is going
- 9:57Speaker 4: to happen. Now NFL maybe it doesn't because NFL is
- 9:59Speaker 4: the biggest sport that we have.
- 10:01Speaker 2: They protect the shield too pretty hard, right, I.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Don't be the first either. No, I don't want to
- 10:10Speaker 3: be the first that does this.
- 10:12Speaker 6: One about practice, Like out of Colorado did it last
- 10:15Speaker 6: year a couple of teams that it was like three
- 10:16Speaker 6: or four they did like the players social media to
- 10:18Speaker 6: like pump them up in practice, but like you're wearing
- 10:20Speaker 6: that during a game.
- 10:22Speaker 2: That's that's why I started started this off by saying,
- 10:25Speaker 2: like we always know that we want to be on
- 10:27Speaker 2: the front line the cutting edge of like staying ahead
- 10:30Speaker 2: in this in ever changing in il world and paying
- 10:33Speaker 2: players world like this one is so such a sensitive
- 10:40Speaker 2: topic because you're dealing with something that's so traditional and
- 10:42Speaker 2: like we like we don't do a lot of crazy
- 10:45Speaker 2: uniforms because the traditionalism that is the LSU standard uniform.
- 10:50Speaker 2: We love it. It's beloved. So my hope is just
- 10:52Speaker 2: like you, I'm absolutely practice jerseys all day. Do it.
- 10:56Speaker 2: You want to put shirts on, you want to put
- 10:58Speaker 2: patches on everything. The players where in a press conference
- 11:01Speaker 2: after the a you know what, put them on. The
- 11:03Speaker 2: coaches put it on Brian Kelly. Yah. They already saw
- 11:06Speaker 2: that he gets shown as much as you know a
- 11:08Speaker 2: player does on the sideline where you can actually zoom
- 11:11Speaker 2: in and see a patch, right, So Brian Kelly gets
- 11:13Speaker 2: shown like and it benefits the coach to have more
- 11:15Speaker 2: money to pay for players. If that's what it's really for,
- 11:18Speaker 2: put it on them, but don't bastardize the college traditional uniform.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Someone was asking, what if you put a small sticker
- 11:27Speaker 4: on the back of your helmet.
- 11:29Speaker 3: The problem is with LSU.
- 11:30Speaker 4: One of the iconic things about the LSU helmet is
- 11:34Speaker 4: you have the State of Louisiana flag and the American flag.
- 11:38Speaker 3: On the back too.
- 11:39Speaker 4: So even if you put it on the back of
- 11:41Speaker 4: the helmet, then you're taking away from, in my opinion,
- 11:45Speaker 4: the state flag and the American flag, right.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and there's always real estate back there too, like
- 11:52Speaker 2: if something happens in your program that there's always space
- 11:56Speaker 2: for a sticker for like a remembrance or something like that.
- 11:59Speaker 2: To me, the back of the helmet's kind of a
- 12:00Speaker 2: special special real estate there. Anyway, it's the world we
- 12:06Speaker 2: live in.
- 12:09Speaker 4: I wish they would just put the American flag patch
- 12:11Speaker 4: like they had against was it on? Yeah, Well it's
- 12:16Speaker 4: a little bit better than that one from Burlington.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Hey, that one looks like it's been through a lot.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Old Glory went through a lot of meth. Francis Scott
- 12:24Speaker 2: Key was sitting there in his prison cell, looking at
- 12:28Speaker 2: his prison window, the bombs bursting in the air. It's
- 12:33Speaker 2: old glory flying, tattered, beating up. Never even thought the
- 12:38Speaker 2: college football teams two hundred and fifty years later would
- 12:40Speaker 2: be thinking about putting Dillard's logo on their jersey.
- 12:48Speaker 3: I feel like dealers just caught a stray.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Love.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it was great.
- 12:53Speaker 6: Just don't be the Lakers, like the Lakers are, like,
- 12:56Speaker 6: you know, what make our jersey look better?
- 12:57Speaker 2: Wish dot com.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I just wish dot com.
- 13:00Speaker 2: It's like a It's kind of like Tu.
- 13:03Speaker 7: Right, It's like it's like the t is like tu
- 13:06Speaker 7: wish dot com.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Like is the original te.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Where you can get stuff for dirt cheap and it's
- 13:15Speaker 4: dirt cheap made when you get it.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I've never I have, and I just.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Tiger.
- 13:22Speaker 2: I just never cared enough to go. Well. China.
- 13:28Speaker 7: Yeah, American really really cheap, and it's pretty American to
- 13:33Speaker 7: get cheap stuff from China.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I feel like, yeah, I'm in to her point.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Matt Flinn looking like Sea Bass from Dumb and Dumber. Absolutely,
- 13:43Speaker 4: you guys have Sea Bass.
- 13:46Speaker 2: A couple of boiler makers.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Not bad good see.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you, thank you because I look big, tough, strong, Yeah,
- 13:56Speaker 2: like I'm gonna whip your ass.
- 13:58Speaker 3: All right, we'll step away when we I'm back.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Well, Joe dirt well, Joe dirted one of the most
- 14:04Speaker 4: iconic scenes in the history of film. Then we've got
- 14:07Speaker 4: Jay Johnson joining us in fifteen minutes from now. Say
- 14:10Speaker 4: locked in OTB Doster Dens. All right, go to Central
- 14:15Speaker 4: Plumbing dot org. Central Plumbing dot Org is the website
- 14:19Speaker 4: for you. Guess it's Central Plumbing, but not only in
- 14:21Speaker 4: Central of course they can help you out in that area,
- 14:23Speaker 4: but we're talking to the entire greater Baton Rouge area.

- 14:30Speaker 4: five eighty five fifty two is the twenty four seven
- 14:32Speaker 4: three sixty five weekend holiday game day tomorrow, pretty important day,
- 14:38Speaker 4: fourth of July. A lot of people, most everybody, I
- 14:41Speaker 4: would say ninety nine point nine percent of people are off.
- 14:45Speaker 4: But if you've got an emergency, guess we'll be there.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Uh, Central Plumbing.
- 14:48Speaker 4: That's right, because three sixty five twenty four seven means
- 14:51Speaker 4: exactly that.

- 14:54Speaker 2: can be an ice cream banana puddy. You're gonna beat
- 14:56Speaker 2: so many things mixed together. It could create some sort
- 14:59Speaker 2: of plumbing issue in your house, in your friend's house,

- 15:14Speaker 8: Shoe Halm.
- 15:15Speaker 1: We traveled back two thousand and seven. Shamps Purple and
- 15:19Speaker 1: Gold to the core. This is off the bench with
- 15:22Speaker 1: Hester and Flynn, Matt and Rougees go to for all
- 15:25Speaker 1: things Louisiana sports.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Come off on this.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Are you scared.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Travel without a car?
- 15:34Speaker 6: Been out back with the Beaver Pass and be Davis Slash,
- 15:37Speaker 6: Dirty Back, Stroll, Dirty Back, No Rocaine and the pro
- 15:42Speaker 6: paint ball.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Got it heard this song since Moby Dick was a meno.
- 15:48Speaker 3: It's a nice pull. Well, I mean, speaking of kid.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Rock, Well, hold on where you get to that? You
- 15:56Speaker 2: know every day every year?
- 15:57Speaker 3: Take a great album, by the way, take egg.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Kentucky Derby Trip A couple of years ago. Yeah, I
- 16:02Speaker 2: went shoe I think it's two years ago. Or three
- 16:05Speaker 2: years ago. Our table was right next to kid Rock. Yeah,
- 16:08Speaker 2: and so we're sitting there, we're kind of hanging out
- 16:12Speaker 2: with him a little bit throughout the day and uh,
- 16:15Speaker 2: you know, comes the Cole Pops. He comes over and
- 16:18Speaker 2: he comes out to me. It's like, hey, look over there,
- 16:23Speaker 2: and I'm like, where he said these nuts? I don't
- 16:29Speaker 2: think that worked. That is the delivery there, So I
- 16:32Speaker 2: got these nuts wrongly.
- 16:34Speaker 7: So good story, kid Rock best concert I've ever been
- 16:38Speaker 7: to kid Rock.
- 16:41Speaker 2: So I I don't know if it's the best I've
- 16:45Speaker 2: ever been to. But he played. He played at our
- 16:49Speaker 2: victory super Bowl victory party at the Marriotte Hotel in Dallas, Texas,
- 16:56Speaker 2: and it was just like the packer, like our player
- 17:00Speaker 2: and family and close friends whoever was like on the list. So,
- 17:03Speaker 2: I mean you're probably talking three hundred people. The dude
- 17:07Speaker 2: rocked his face off. Yeah, worked his ass off.
- 17:10Speaker 7: I was exaggerating when I said back, but definitely like
- 17:12Speaker 7: top five concerts.
- 17:14Speaker 2: It was actually kind of shocked a like how good
- 17:16Speaker 2: it was? So good?
- 17:17Speaker 7: It was electric.
- 17:18Speaker 3: So you were at the Kentucky Derby when so Virginity won, Yeah, yep.
- 17:26Speaker 7: It was what Kentucky Derby first Saturday.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why.
- 17:33Speaker 4: That's why the video resurface is when Sovereignty one, I'm like,
- 17:37Speaker 4: so Virginity Mario and I had to play it. Yeah,
- 17:41Speaker 4: and now my phone continues to blow up.
- 17:43Speaker 7: Tell you it was on a random three million views
- 17:47Speaker 7: right now, dude, I'm in that video for a total
- 17:49Speaker 7: of two seconds.
- 17:50Speaker 6: Just when we panned to I'm in a wedding a
- 17:53Speaker 6: year and a half ago and we're lining up doing
- 17:55Speaker 6: a little sendof thing at the end of the wedding. Well,
- 17:57Speaker 6: like you line up on either side. Some girls sent
- 17:59Speaker 6: a cross from me go, hey, I know you. I
- 18:02Speaker 6: was like me, she was, yeah, the guy in that
- 18:05Speaker 6: Sovereignty video. I was like, I don't even think I
- 18:07Speaker 6: said anything in that video.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Wait, what is I don't know the video?
- 18:12Speaker 3: Okay, get that ready.
- 18:14Speaker 4: But first, but first, speaking of kid Rock, he starred
- 18:18Speaker 4: in one of the greatest films of our lifetime, They
- 18:22Speaker 4: the World Joe Dirt and here is because tomorrow is
- 18:26Speaker 4: the fourth of July, a scene that everybody needs to see.
- 18:31Speaker 9: As my head cleared, I realized I needed a different approach.
- 18:35Speaker 9: Then I got a brainstorm, hired Indian tracker to help me.
- 18:39Speaker 9: Man that's a great idea. They can find anything. It's
- 18:41Speaker 9: like in the movies. So I headed for a reservation.
- 18:51Speaker 9: You want me to put my ear to the ground,
- 18:53Speaker 9: Listen for hoof beats, check for footprints.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Look for broken twist.
- 19:00Speaker 2: But this is the modern age.
- 19:02Speaker 8: That stuff doesn't work anymore, which is why I have
- 19:06Speaker 8: to open this fireworks.
- 19:07Speaker 9: Then I wasn't getting buy them when tracking wagers come on,
- 19:12Speaker 9: you're supposed to be good at tracking stuff. Man, I
- 19:15Speaker 9: gotta find my parents and I've got to figure out
- 19:18Speaker 9: a way to sell more fireworks.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I'm going broke with this spencer.
- 19:21Speaker 9: Also, well, I see you got them snakes and sparklers.
- 19:24Speaker 9: But there's good stuff, man.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Good stuff.
- 19:28Speaker 3: This is the good stuff.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Snakes and sparklers.
- 19:31Speaker 8: Are you nuts, dude? You need stuff to explode?
- 19:33Speaker 2: Go boom?
- 19:34Speaker 9: Why is that good?
- 19:40Speaker 2: Mostreet good? A lot of sunset good?
- 19:42Speaker 3: Why Boom's good?
- 19:44Speaker 9: Man?
- 19:45Speaker 8: Firecrackers you stick them in mailboxes, you drop me toilets,
- 19:49Speaker 8: you shove them up bullfrogs.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Ass, I would never do.
- 19:52Speaker 2: That because I'm gonna be a veterinarian.
- 19:55Speaker 8: Well there you go. Someone shoves THEMTI up of bullfrogs,
- 19:58Speaker 8: but blows him to piece. He comes back to you
- 20:01Speaker 8: to fix it. You win twice.
- 20:02Speaker 9: Brother, it's good bitz.
- 20:05Speaker 8: So you're gonna tell me that you don't have no
- 20:07Speaker 8: black cats, no roman candles or screaming mimis. No, Oh,
- 20:11Speaker 8: come on, man, you don't got no lady fingers, buzz butterles,
- 20:13Speaker 8: snicker bombs, church burners, finger blasters, gut busters, zippity do
- 20:17Speaker 8: dies or craft flappers.
- 20:18Speaker 6: No, I don't.
- 20:19Speaker 8: You're gonna stand there owning a fireworks stand and tell
- 20:24Speaker 8: me you don't have no whistling bungholes, no spleen splitters,
- 20:27Speaker 8: whisker biscuits, honkey riders, hooskerdoos hoosker, don'ts cherry bombs, nipsy
- 20:32Speaker 8: dazers with it without the scooter stick or one single
- 20:35Speaker 8: whistling kiddy chaser.
- 20:38Speaker 2: No, because snakes and sparklers are the only ones. I like.
- 20:44Speaker 9: What that might be wrong, it's not what you like.
- 20:48Speaker 2: It's the consumer spleen splitters.
- 20:55Speaker 4: But he's doing that scene, like is he just like randomly?
- 20:59Speaker 4: Like whatever's there's no way you can remember all of that.
- 21:02Speaker 3: There's no way that.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Took a couple of takes. He was too too good.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Yeah, he's way too good and.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Chaser.
- 21:12Speaker 4: God, my gosh, that was good.
- 21:17Speaker 2: I guess said. We used to watch that in high school.
- 21:19Speaker 2: My junior year, we would watch it. I mean, the
- 21:22Speaker 2: lineman would get together. We'd go to Ryan's Steakhouse. Oh heck, yeah,
- 21:28Speaker 2: because Thursday was all you can eat steak, so we
- 21:31Speaker 2: go there, fill up.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Great cut of meat.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I'm sure that was absolutely the finest end of the cirlin.
- 21:38Speaker 2: And then we would go to somebody's house and we'd
- 21:41Speaker 2: watch Joe Dirt. That was our tradition every Thursday, every
- 21:45Speaker 2: Thursday for the Tyler Lee Red Raiders. Every Thursday, every Thursday.
- 21:49Speaker 2: All right, how else do you think we made an
- 21:54Speaker 2: incredible run to the second round of the playoffs?
- 21:58Speaker 4: Y'all only made it to the I can't round of
- 22:00Speaker 4: the playoffs junior year, that's it.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Yeah, who'd y'all lose to mesquite Le'skeete Skeeters.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Wait, you lost to a team with the mascot the Mosquitoes.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Uh no, the Skeeters of Skeeters. Yeah, that's short for
- 22:15Speaker 2: Mosquito mosquit Skeeters. They had a I think one of
- 22:18Speaker 2: the top defensive tackles in the whole country went to
- 22:24Speaker 2: ut I can't remember his.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Name, I must have been dynamic if you can't remember, they.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Put him that running back too. I don't remember anybody's name.
- 22:32Speaker 2: So at that time, my high school had never been
- 22:34Speaker 2: past the second round.
- 22:35Speaker 4: This is my junior year, and you you think that
- 22:39Speaker 4: that school could come over to Shreveport evangel and get
- 22:42Speaker 4: a victory.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Uh, my senior year, we could have how far y'all go?
- 22:49Speaker 2: Then we gotta be in the semifinals.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Okay, it's better.
- 22:53Speaker 2: We should have won obviously. Would you lose to then Midland?
- 22:57Speaker 3: What's your Midland?
- 22:58Speaker 2: Midland High? They hadn't been playoff since nineteen fifty eight.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Maybeat us? Not Midland, Lee, not the second not.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Cedric Benson went to Midland.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Cedric Benson went to Midlandyuh.
- 23:11Speaker 4: You lost to a school that had been to the
- 23:12Speaker 4: playoffs since Elvis dropped his first album.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and then they got beaten by Converse Judson in
- 23:19Speaker 2: the state championship Taylor. Yeah.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Did you at least get to go play like in
- 23:25Speaker 4: Cowboys Stadium in the semis?
- 23:27Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, we played there after the first round. We
- 23:29Speaker 2: every year you play your first round at something like
- 23:32Speaker 2: the better team's home field, or maybe it was a
- 23:35Speaker 2: coin flip. But second round on, you were always playing
- 23:38Speaker 2: at Texas Stadium. Oh okay, all right, that's at least
- 23:41Speaker 2: that's cool. Nineteen fifty eight stats is probably something you
- 23:44Speaker 2: should forget. Don't tell people that again. I don't know
- 23:48Speaker 2: if anybody knows this, but that year LS won its
- 23:51Speaker 2: first national title? Did they? Oh?
- 23:57Speaker 3: I thought I was so confused.
- 23:59Speaker 2: I thought you were talking about I got it wrong.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Your face.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I thought you were talking about two thousand and three,
- 24:04Speaker 3: your senior. I'm like, no, they didn't like you were
- 24:06Speaker 3: you were there. I was so confused. All right, somebody
- 24:09Speaker 3: that's never confused. He's always got a plan.
- 24:11Speaker 4: The head baseball coach for the national champion LSU Tigers,
- 24:15Speaker 4: Jay Johnson, joins us when we come back here on
- 24:19Speaker 4: OTB off the bench, Hey, Matt, tell the people about
- 24:24Speaker 4: their sekies. Why I remind Jay that he's coming on
- 24:26Speaker 4: the show.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Oh, you gotta send it a little reminder. All right.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Fourth of July America's birthday. We better way to celebrate
- 24:33Speaker 2: it than with a Mexican longer. Go stock up today.
- 24:37Speaker 2: You're gonna everybody's gonna go to their Fourth of July. Well,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you're gonna get together with family you're gonna get together
- 24:41Speaker 2: with friends. There's no nothing better to do than to
- 24:45Speaker 2: go for days. Go to your wherever it is, your
- 24:47Speaker 2: grocery store, your liquor store, the convenience store, they everywhere,
- 24:50Speaker 2: we know it. They got it, cool it down, get
- 24:53Speaker 2: yourself some ice cold lines, cut them up into slices.
- 24:56Speaker 2: There's nothing nothing better. Golden Mexican logger. And then they got
- 25:02Speaker 2: the amber. Whatever your choice is, go for dose. I'm
- 25:05Speaker 2: gonna delete some beers tomorrow, and I hope you delete
- 25:09Speaker 2: some beers.
- 25:11Speaker 4: I've already got him in the fridge. They will already
- 25:14Speaker 4: be accounted for. You should already stock up as well,
- 25:17Speaker 4: be prepared for a party tomorrow, and go for dose.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Time ago. I can still remember how that music used
- 25:28Speaker 2: to make me smile.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Two thousand and seven Champs Purple and Gold to the core.
- 25:37Speaker 1: This is Off the Bench with Hester and Flynn, Baton
- 25:40Speaker 1: Rougees go to for all things Louisiana sports.
- 25:45Speaker 4: All right, welcome back in OTB one oh four to
- 25:48Speaker 4: five ESPN, Betton Rouge and very excited for our next conversation.
- 25:52Speaker 4: Someone we caught up with every single week during the
- 25:56Speaker 4: baseball season, and now we get to talk to him
- 25:59Speaker 4: as a two time I'M national champion. It is the
- 26:02Speaker 4: head baseball coach for the LSU Fighting Tigers. Jay Johnson, coach,
- 26:06Speaker 4: We appreciate it. Thanks for hopping on with us. I
- 26:08Speaker 4: know it has been a whirlwin for you.
- 26:12Speaker 5: Been a little busy, but the best kind of busy.
- 26:14Speaker 5: So how you guys doing.
- 26:16Speaker 3: We are doing great.
- 26:17Speaker 4: And you had look you have been because you know,
- 26:20Speaker 4: we were talking about it. After a national championship. You
- 26:24Speaker 4: see a lot of people Okay, let me go ahead,
- 26:26Speaker 4: take a rest, take a load off, let me you know,
- 26:29Speaker 4: reflect on what just happened. But that is not the
- 26:32Speaker 4: approach of Jay Johnson.
- 26:34Speaker 3: It never has been.
- 26:35Speaker 4: I mean, you have been working towards next year's team already.
- 26:39Speaker 4: It feels like coach since the moment that the final
- 26:41Speaker 4: out was recorded.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I definitely took a Sunday night to celebrate and
- 26:50Speaker 5: be with be with this team. It's just a crazy
- 26:54Speaker 5: dynamic that it's not avoidable. It's not anybody's fault. It's
- 26:58Speaker 5: just the way things all kind of matriculated and transpired,
- 27:02Speaker 5: particularly for baseball and the baseball schedule. It is what
- 27:06Speaker 5: it is, and you know that going in, you know
- 27:09Speaker 5: it was actually, when we beat Arkansas to not have
- 27:12Speaker 5: to play again on Thursday, I felt like that almost
- 27:16Speaker 5: saved us a little bit. It just gave us an
- 27:18Speaker 5: extra day not just to get ready for Coastal, which
- 27:20Speaker 5: was huge to have that extra day to prepare, but
- 27:23Speaker 5: to try to just hold serve in recruiting while we
- 27:26Speaker 5: were playing. And so that was good and set the
- 27:30Speaker 5: table for some things we're able to do when we won.
- 27:33Speaker 5: And yeah, the celebration was awesome. Definitely taking pockets at time,
- 27:38Speaker 5: like when I'm on a plane or something to watch
- 27:40Speaker 5: highlights of the series. But other than that, you gotta go.
- 27:44Speaker 5: We got some catching up to do. So it's been
- 27:47Speaker 5: pretty busy.
- 27:48Speaker 4: Yeah, and really, like you said, there's nothing you can
- 27:50Speaker 4: really do. It's not that you don't want to enjoy
- 27:52Speaker 4: and celebrate with the team, it's because of the calendar.
- 27:55Speaker 4: And with the calendar, as we talked about the last
- 27:57Speaker 4: time we had you on, like the portal was open
- 28:00Speaker 4: and there was players that were making decisions. There was
- 28:03Speaker 4: you know, players that had already been in the portal,
- 28:05Speaker 4: out of the portal and gotten to their new school
- 28:07Speaker 4: and you're still playing baseball, and so like during that
- 28:10Speaker 4: entire process, coach, how do you make sure that you
- 28:13Speaker 4: your staff, everybody you're focused on the main thing, which
- 28:16Speaker 4: is to go win a national championship, but also knowing
- 28:19Speaker 4: that you probably have to start some of these conversations
- 28:22Speaker 4: just to make sure that when it does end, you
- 28:24Speaker 4: actually have an opportunity to get whichever players that you're
- 28:27Speaker 4: trying to get to LSU.
- 28:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a tough balance. I think we did a
- 28:31Speaker 5: good job prior to Omaha. We picked up a couple
- 28:36Speaker 5: veteran hitters that kind of have a dynamic that we
- 28:39Speaker 5: need for next year's team, so that that was helpful.
- 28:43Speaker 5: Then the Omaha thing, you'd really try to sell, like
- 28:48Speaker 5: turn on the TV man like this is like this
- 28:52Speaker 5: is this is what this is about, and you know
- 28:56Speaker 5: you want to be a part of that and just
- 28:57Speaker 5: hang tight for another week or so. And some guys
- 29:01Speaker 5: did and some guys didn't. Then that's okay, And yeah,
- 29:04Speaker 5: I mean I wouldn't trade Omaha for the world, and
- 29:08Speaker 5: I'm proud of our team. I think one of the
- 29:11Speaker 5: positives maybe this time around is we have a few
- 29:15Speaker 5: more guys that contributed to that that we'll be returning
- 29:19Speaker 5: than the last time, and so it's not quite as
- 29:23Speaker 5: much of an overhaul, if you will, Like I think
- 29:26Speaker 5: in twenty three, if I'm not mistaken, like maybe two
- 29:30Speaker 5: of the nine starters were coming back, and and this
- 29:32Speaker 5: year it might be might be four, might be five,
- 29:35Speaker 5: but it might only be three. But the young pitching
- 29:38Speaker 5: we have in the program with Case Evans, William Schmidt, Maverick,
- 29:42Speaker 5: Rizzy Cooper Williams, potentially a couple of guys coming back,
- 29:45Speaker 5: you know, hopefully Zach Kallen Jaden new like, there's there's
- 29:48Speaker 5: a really good foundation of a really good pitching staff there.
- 29:51Speaker 5: And just as our team proved this year, the game
- 29:53Speaker 5: is about pitching. So we'll find the right guys and
- 29:57Speaker 5: keep keep moving to the finish line hero the next
- 30:00Speaker 5: couple of weeks.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Coach, I just want to start by telling you thank
- 30:03Speaker 2: you for a couple of things. One, you've made my
- 30:06Speaker 2: entire family like huge baseball fans. We all own proud
- 30:09Speaker 2: Runners of LSU baseball jerseys. Now we watched and had
- 30:12Speaker 2: such a good time throughout the entire run as a family.
- 30:15Speaker 2: But then at the celebration, somehow my little boy snuck
- 30:19Speaker 2: onto the field and was getting autographs after the celebration,
- 30:22Speaker 2: and you were very kind to him. You spent time
- 30:24Speaker 2: and said hi to him, and you signed his ball
- 30:25Speaker 2: and he's got a little glass case. I want to
- 30:27Speaker 2: start by saying thank you for that, thank you for
- 30:29Speaker 2: being kind to him. And I wanted to say, in
- 30:34Speaker 2: ten years from now, when somebody asks you reflect back
- 30:38Speaker 2: on the twenty twenty five LSU baseball team, how are
- 30:42Speaker 2: you going to how would you describe this team in
- 30:44Speaker 2: the season as a whole.
- 30:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I think two things come to mind. First off,
- 30:50Speaker 5: our motto for the season was tough and together, and
- 30:53Speaker 5: that was from day one of August. And I kind
- 30:56Speaker 5: of came up with that of you know where, I
- 30:58Speaker 5: felt like we needed to elevate the program and the
- 31:01Speaker 5: team from last year, and that's what they were I
- 31:05Speaker 5: mean through this entire deal. But the hallmark of the
- 31:08Speaker 5: team was consistency. And there was just so many points
- 31:13Speaker 5: along the way where you pointed to it and go like, man,
- 31:17Speaker 5: this is pretty good. Like I don't know if we're
- 31:20Speaker 5: the most talented team, even though we had exceptional talent,
- 31:22Speaker 5: especially on the mound, but we're doing this the right way.
- 31:26Speaker 5: These guys are doing this the right way. They're responded
- 31:29Speaker 5: to success. Well, they responded a failure. Well, they're motivated.
- 31:33Speaker 5: There was very few lapses in anything concentration, intent, and
- 31:40Speaker 5: that's why I'm just I'm really proud. There's a quote
- 31:43Speaker 5: from John Wooden that great teams play near their capability often,
- 31:48Speaker 5: and I really believe that's what this team did. And
- 31:50Speaker 5: you know, we're not just the national champions. I feel
- 31:53Speaker 5: like we played the best of anybody in the country
- 31:55Speaker 5: in twenty twenty five.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Because you know, with LSU had baseball coach Jay Johnson
- 32:00Speaker 4: here on OTB coach, one of the things you and
- 32:03Speaker 4: I often talk about is, Okay, you have this high
- 32:05Speaker 4: school recruiting class and you've put in so many hours,
- 32:08Speaker 4: so many days, weeks and months and really years into
- 32:11Speaker 4: trying to get this player on campus. Outside of actually
- 32:16Speaker 4: winning a national championship, is it the best feeling when
- 32:19Speaker 4: you get them through the MLB Draft or when they
- 32:22Speaker 4: call you and say, hey, coach, I know you probably
- 32:25Speaker 4: thought I was going to enter the draft. I'm actually
- 32:27Speaker 4: taking my name out all that hard work that you
- 32:29Speaker 4: and the staff did, I'm going to come play baseball
- 32:31Speaker 4: for you.
- 32:33Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a pretty good one, because the first thing
- 32:36Speaker 5: you mentioned doesn't happen without decisions. Like that, Like we're
- 32:42Speaker 5: not the national champions without Case and Evans, Derek Curiel,
- 32:46Speaker 5: William Schmidt, those guys that just did it last year
- 32:49Speaker 5: or Jared Jones returning, you know from last year's draft.
- 32:52Speaker 5: And you know, we just had one with with Omar
- 32:55Speaker 5: cerna freshman catcher who's a great player. Which man, you
- 33:00Speaker 5: put cater Embadie and him together. Not only are they
- 33:03Speaker 5: both great catchers, but they both have power and play
- 33:07Speaker 5: first base, DH maybe place third. That that's a really
- 33:10Speaker 5: big lift because there's a lot of questions right now
- 33:13Speaker 5: with how things are gonna shake out, Like we're gonna
- 33:16Speaker 5: wear it on the chin a little bit with our
- 33:17Speaker 5: high school recruiting class. There's just there's too much money
- 33:20Speaker 5: in this draft. Like I don't know if MLB got
- 33:23Speaker 5: tired of players choosing to go to college R L,
- 33:26Speaker 5: s U or what, But yeah, getting Omar through, you know,
- 33:31Speaker 5: to pair with Cad was a big deal and feel
- 33:34Speaker 5: great about that. And it's like, you know, thinking back
- 33:37Speaker 5: on it, like when you know Cason told me he's coming,
- 33:40Speaker 5: like that, that's how these championships and those things happen.
- 33:43Speaker 5: And same with same with a lot of these guys.
- 33:46Speaker 5: So yeah, It is a good feeling because you can't
- 33:48Speaker 5: get to that championship unless decisions like that are made.
- 33:51Speaker 5: And and hopefully we'll be fortunate, you know, with with
- 33:54Speaker 5: a few of them, and we're trying to prepare for
- 33:56Speaker 5: all scenarios. But yeah, I don't know what maybe League
- 34:00Speaker 5: Baseball did, but they're pumping a lot of money into
- 34:02Speaker 5: this this amateur draft this year.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and to kind of piggyback on that too, I mean,
- 34:08Speaker 2: laying in a big recruit or getting someone to stay.
- 34:10Speaker 2: It's all validation, right, It's all validation of hard work
- 34:13Speaker 2: that jump put into it, the scouting reports, and then
- 34:16Speaker 2: what you put on the field, just like you said,
- 34:17Speaker 2: And another validation is when a recruit like that signs
- 34:22Speaker 2: with you, comes and has a lot of success. And
- 34:23Speaker 2: to that point, Derek Curie I named National Freshman of
- 34:27Speaker 2: the Year. What did this freshman class and specifically Derek
- 34:31Speaker 2: really mean to this team all year?
- 34:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm really happy for him. He's had an outstanding
- 34:37Speaker 5: year and playing at LSU, you get a lot of attention,
- 34:40Speaker 5: and so he's gotten a lot of attention, but he's
- 34:42Speaker 5: deserved it. And then you know, kind of maybe narrowly
- 34:45Speaker 5: missed out on some of these awards, but that's the
- 34:48Speaker 5: one that counts because those the guys that know the
- 34:50Speaker 5: best and are most in tune with college baseball. So
- 34:53Speaker 5: to be the d one baseball dot com National Freshman
- 34:57Speaker 5: of the Year, that's the one that counts in my opinion,
- 35:00Speaker 5: and very proud of him for that. Just love how
- 35:04Speaker 5: he goes about baseball, like he builds his life around baseball,
- 35:07Speaker 5: and I thought that was well to serve. Now. I
- 35:10Speaker 5: liked your question too about this group. I think on
- 35:14Speaker 5: the twenty seven man roster in Omaha we had seven freshmen,
- 35:18Speaker 5: which was by far the most and very thankful for
- 35:22Speaker 5: that group because you know, we're going to really lean
- 35:25Speaker 5: into them and lean on to them next year and
- 35:27Speaker 5: then the year after that and expect some of those
- 35:30Speaker 5: guys to get better. And they a lot of them
- 35:32Speaker 5: contributed to a national championship team. I mean, like I said,
- 35:35Speaker 5: I mean Evan's freshman All American now pitched fifty plus
- 35:40Speaker 5: high leverage innings. William Schmidt was seven and zero. Maverick
- 35:43Speaker 5: Rizzy led our team in appearances. John Pearson kind of
- 35:47Speaker 5: became the right handed hitter we went to off the bench.
- 35:51Speaker 5: Derek obviously Kate Aaron Beattie. You know, we won several
- 35:53Speaker 5: SEC games with him behind the plate, and I feel
- 35:57Speaker 5: like he's poised and ready to take that deal over.
- 35:59Speaker 5: So really, uh, really excited, just really excited about that.
- 36:04Speaker 5: And you know we'll get another good class of probably
- 36:08Speaker 5: less of them to be honest with you, you know,
- 36:10Speaker 5: just the way that it is, but that's okay, And
- 36:13Speaker 5: try to blend it in with the you know, return
- 36:16Speaker 5: a few guys that maybe are on the cusp of
- 36:18Speaker 5: the draft or returning from our team, and then a
- 36:21Speaker 5: few guys in the portal and strap it on and
- 36:24Speaker 5: do it again and excited for that challenge.
- 36:28Speaker 4: So coach, you mentioned William Schmidt there and has me wondering,
- 36:33Speaker 4: like you look at what Kate Anderson went from his
- 36:35Speaker 4: first year to his second year on campus, right, I
- 36:39Speaker 4: mean first year obviously he did some good things, but
- 36:41Speaker 4: the second year he explodes one of the best you know.
- 36:44Speaker 3: Pitchers out there.
- 36:45Speaker 4: Like so for William Schmidt with like when you see
- 36:47Speaker 4: the town you mentioned, he's seven to zero, right, but
- 36:49Speaker 4: he's gonna have a bigger role on this team. Do
- 36:52Speaker 4: you go about it in the same way as far
- 36:54Speaker 4: as developing the player, like Hey, here's what we did
- 36:56Speaker 4: with Cade, We're gonna do a lot of the similar
- 36:57Speaker 4: things with you. Or is like every player a little
- 36:59Speaker 4: bit different and you've kind of got your own plan
- 37:01Speaker 4: for William Schmidt.
- 37:03Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a good question, and I feel like we
- 37:05Speaker 5: have a few pictures in that boat, so like, I
- 37:08Speaker 5: think there's a lot of learning that can be done
- 37:11Speaker 5: for you know, William Schmid or a Cooper Williams, who
- 37:13Speaker 5: was awesome for us down the stretch. I mean, the
- 37:15Speaker 5: appearance in the Super Regional was huge, and I think
- 37:19Speaker 5: with both those guys you can take some similarities because
- 37:21Speaker 5: there are actually similar body types and good athletes, kind
- 37:25Speaker 5: of like Kate was. I've told everybody like if I
- 37:28Speaker 5: let Kate hit, I bet he would be a starting
- 37:29Speaker 5: outfielder for us. You know, he's a terrific athlete, and
- 37:33Speaker 5: if he wants to come back next year, I'll let
- 37:35Speaker 5: him hit two. So on the record, that's kidding, that's
- 37:40Speaker 5: the Nationals. Your ear up. You know, Kochesky is excellent,
- 37:46Speaker 5: and we have some really good plans you know for
- 37:50Speaker 5: for like I said, Cooper Williams, William Schmidt, Maverick, Rizzy
- 37:53Speaker 5: Maverick's going to throw up in the Cape Cod League
- 37:55Speaker 5: about four times over three weeks and get get on
- 37:58Speaker 5: the mound. We're going to send Cooper out to Arizona
- 38:02Speaker 5: to do some training stuff and then we have a
- 38:05Speaker 5: very specific plan for William that we're working through and
- 38:09Speaker 5: I'm really excited about that, Like I want to you know,
- 38:12Speaker 5: the portal is part of this thing, but I've always
- 38:16Speaker 5: been a program developer, program builder, and those guys are
- 38:19Speaker 5: at the heart of that. So really excited to dig
- 38:22Speaker 5: into that with them.
- 38:24Speaker 2: So Coach Jacob and I we were both fortunate to
- 38:27Speaker 2: be a part of national championships and our respective sport.
- 38:30Speaker 2: And I was here in two thousand and three when
- 38:33Speaker 2: we won a national championship, and I remember the off
- 38:36Speaker 2: season for the two thousand and four season, so right
- 38:39Speaker 2: off that Coach Saban made it a point that we
- 38:41Speaker 2: all felt to let that new team understand that we're
- 38:46Speaker 2: not the old team. And it was the hardest physically
- 38:49Speaker 2: and mentally off season we had ever been through because
- 38:51Speaker 2: they wanted to reset everything, and he wanted to make
- 38:54Speaker 2: a point that like, we're not going to be complacent,
- 38:57Speaker 2: we are not gonna We're not gonna read our press
- 38:59Speaker 2: clippings We're going to work your tails off. And this
- 39:01Speaker 2: is a whole new team. So your strategy, you've already
- 39:05Speaker 2: done it once, but your strategy going into a brand
- 39:07Speaker 2: new team, a new offseason, and what kind of message
- 39:10Speaker 2: do you need to send it? And is that a
- 39:12Speaker 2: challenge coming off of a national championship?
- 39:16Speaker 5: Yeah, it is, and I think we John Gordon, the
- 39:22Speaker 5: speaker writer ye become a friend of mine and I
- 39:26Speaker 5: actually had him help me with this last time, and
- 39:30Speaker 5: he talked about really clearly delineating this is not repeating
- 39:36Speaker 5: defending anything. This is attacking a new opportunity. And we'll
- 39:42Speaker 5: bring in a group of players that have not won
- 39:44Speaker 5: a national championship. So like, wouldn't be fair to them
- 39:49Speaker 5: for the staff the returning players to not give everything
- 39:53Speaker 5: they can so that those guys can be a part
- 39:56Speaker 5: of that. Also, I think, I know how hard this
- 40:01Speaker 5: is to do, and don't take it for granted. And
- 40:05Speaker 5: I said this somewhere like this just didn't happen overnight.
- 40:09Speaker 5: So you have to, you know, recommit, reinvest to what
- 40:13Speaker 5: we call our process of winning, and that starts the
- 40:16Speaker 5: first day of school. Like we start lifting the first
- 40:19Speaker 5: day of school, we start skill instruction the first week
- 40:22Speaker 5: of school to max out the days and opportunities to develop,
- 40:27Speaker 5: you know, because Date Anderson developing strength, developing a slider
- 40:30Speaker 5: like that just didn't show up in you know, April,
- 40:33Speaker 5: like he was in on that as soon as the
- 40:35Speaker 5: season was over. You know, the improvements that you know,
- 40:39Speaker 5: Jared Jones made with you know, contact with pitches in
- 40:42Speaker 5: the zone, like that was a lot of work over time.
- 40:45Speaker 5: And he's a talented player and because of that work,
- 40:48Speaker 5: being really deliberate, you get to those things. And I
- 40:52Speaker 5: understand that probably probably go overboard on it. I don't
- 40:57Speaker 5: think you can manufacture it artificially. I think the players
- 41:00Speaker 5: see right through it. So kind of what I do is,
- 41:03Speaker 5: you know, we'll have a ring ceremony for this team
- 41:06Speaker 5: that won the championship, and I think you have to
- 41:09Speaker 5: let those guys enjoy that or and be a part
- 41:12Speaker 5: of that and some of it otherwise like kind of
- 41:15Speaker 5: like what the hell are we doing it for in
- 41:16Speaker 5: the first place, So you have to like respect that
- 41:20Speaker 5: and at the same time, like when it's October twentieth
- 41:25Speaker 5: and we're in the fourth inner squad, like I'm not
- 41:28Speaker 5: thinking about last year's national championship, so it's just maturity
- 41:33Speaker 5: and actually feel like we have guys that were a
- 41:37Speaker 5: part of this thing that we're a part of. Maybe
- 41:39Speaker 5: the season before, which was still a successful season. We
- 41:41Speaker 5: won forty four games, and they know the difference and
- 41:45Speaker 5: we'll work accordingly. And there are so many positive things
- 41:49Speaker 5: that we can take from this team that are actually
- 41:52Speaker 5: transferable and translatable. But we won't take that for granted
- 41:56Speaker 5: because culture doesn't transfer from team to team. I believe
- 41:59Speaker 5: that's a big myth. You know, you have to reset
- 42:02Speaker 5: and re establish that every year.
- 42:04Speaker 4: All right, there, he is head baseball coach for the
- 42:06Speaker 4: LSU Tigers, Jay Johnson. Good enough to join us all
- 42:09Speaker 4: season long? Coach, We can't thank enough for your time.
- 42:12Speaker 4: We appreciate it every single Thursday. When you join us,
- 42:15Speaker 4: I would say, like, enjoy the all season, but we
- 42:17Speaker 4: know the grind never stop, so we appreciate even today
- 42:20Speaker 4: giving us a couple of minutes.
- 42:22Speaker 5: No problem. It's from the football experts. How many football
- 42:25Speaker 5: games are we going to win this year? What do
- 42:26Speaker 5: we got?
- 42:26Speaker 4: Hey, we're going We're going double digit, coach, We're going
- 42:30Speaker 4: double Hey, we just got to get that opener.
- 42:32Speaker 3: We got to get that opener. You got to start
- 42:33Speaker 3: out on the right foot.
- 42:35Speaker 5: That's right, Absolutely Clemson, right, that's right, all right, let's
- 42:39Speaker 5: get it done.
- 42:40Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 42:40Speaker 4: There is coach Jay Johnson every single Thursday here during
- 42:44Speaker 4: baseball season, was good enough to join us.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Good? Let Jay Johnson go give give the boys a
- 42:51Speaker 3: little speech over there in ponder Rosa. I bet he
- 42:54Speaker 3: could fire a football team up.
- 42:56Speaker 2: There's no doubt I may can fire anybody up.
- 42:59Speaker 4: Because if you're a champion, I don't care what sport
- 43:01Speaker 4: it is, you got something to you.
- 43:02Speaker 2: I just write this down quote, I love it. Culture
- 43:06Speaker 2: does not transfer from team to team.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Does not talk about that when we come back here
- 43:11Speaker 3: on O TV.
- 43:13Speaker 4: Off the bench, all right, you good to all Star

- 44:41Speaker 3: Yalla Doll school Bus, Kick it up, Ran. What was
- 44:44Speaker 3: that quote you said you really liked it from Jay Johnson.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Culture does not transfer from team to team. It does
- 44:51Speaker 2: not By Jay Johnson on Off the Bitch.
- 44:53Speaker 4: A coach can create the culture and you can mimic
- 44:57Speaker 4: the the style, the way he goes about his business
- 45:03Speaker 4: of a coach. But I love that because every group
- 45:06Speaker 4: of people you put together, different things organically are going
- 45:10Speaker 4: to come out.
- 45:11Speaker 3: They're going to happen.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Yep.
- 45:12Speaker 4: Like two thousand and six, LSU had a different culture
- 45:15Speaker 4: than two thousand and seven. A lot of the pieces
- 45:18Speaker 4: were the same, we just had a different mindset.
- 45:21Speaker 3: The two thousand and seven football team that.
- 45:22Speaker 4: We were a part of, I think for me had
- 45:26Speaker 4: the best culture of any team that I've ever been on.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Like nothing fazed us.
- 45:31Speaker 4: Now we were talented in two thousand and six, but
- 45:33Speaker 4: I just feel like we had a different mindset.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Th Almost every championship team you can go back and
- 45:37Speaker 2: say it was just a little bit different for whatever reason,
- 45:40Speaker 2: and it's hard to even put your finger on, like
- 45:42Speaker 2: how was it different? Why was it different? What made
- 45:44Speaker 2: it different? It's just it's just the combination and a
- 45:49Speaker 2: group of people that do something special and it's hard
- 45:51Speaker 2: to put your finger on why. But culture doesn't transfer,
- 45:55Speaker 2: but expectations do.
- 45:58Speaker 3: And W hit that as well when we come back
- 46:00Speaker 3: after bench.

- 46:19Speaker 4: is the last time we started that old school generator.
- 46:22Speaker 4: When's the last time we pulled the handle, got that
- 46:24Speaker 4: puppy started at a.
