Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / SCREAMFEEDER: Still Keeping At It After A Million Years
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So welcome. How have you guys been pretty good?
- 0:04Speaker 2: You know, we've been around for a million years, so
- 0:07Speaker 2: nothing super different with us, but we're.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Still you know, Yeah, it feels like you guys have
- 0:12Speaker 3: just been there forever. It's definitely certainly been on my
- 0:15Speaker 3: agenda since my wee teen days back in the nineties.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Nice.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I last caught up with you guys at I
- 0:22Speaker 1: said fifty. I think it was.
- 0:23Speaker 2: It was awesome.
- 0:24Speaker 1: That was such a good Yeah, it was. It was,
- 0:26Speaker 1: except you guys were on that lean to playing on
- 0:28Speaker 1: the stage. It was weird.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Yeah, but well maybe for us, but you guys probably
- 0:32Speaker 3: will level.
- 0:32Speaker 1: But yeah, it was.
- 0:34Speaker 3: It was a good day, good day for sure, Yeah,
- 0:37Speaker 3: because it was great to see so many familiar faces
- 0:39Speaker 3: back again and it was such a lovely day. And yeah,
- 0:43Speaker 3: so it's what's been happening for you guys. But since
- 0:45Speaker 3: then and now you had a couple of shows here
- 0:46Speaker 3: and there that you've done. I think around and about.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Well, we've been going to practice trying to run a
- 0:51Speaker 2: new album, and it's sort of like going, Okay, it's
- 0:54Speaker 2: not going super fast, but you know, we're trying to
- 0:57Speaker 2: when you when you know, like we've put out a hour.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So it's like when we do an album now it's
- 1:03Speaker 2: super easy to fall into the old patterns and write
- 1:06Speaker 2: songs that could have appeared on previous albums. But now
- 1:09Speaker 2: it's like, I'm at this point where it's like, no,
- 1:12Speaker 2: if we're going to do something, it's got to be different,
- 1:14Speaker 2: and we've got to just shock people slash pissed people
- 1:17Speaker 2: off that very different, you know what I mean?
- 1:20Speaker 3: For sure? Number eight it's always a good one to us. Yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 3: do something differently. So it's the creative possibilities are endless,
- 1:27Speaker 3: especially when you've been veteraned like yourselves, you've got all
- 1:30Speaker 3: their talent and skills under your belt.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yes, we did it a few times, sort of less intentionally,
- 1:36Speaker 2: back saying the nineties for example, where we do an
- 1:39Speaker 2: album that was really successful and then we followed up
- 1:41Speaker 2: with one which we approached totally differently and kind of
- 1:44Speaker 2: a lot of our fans were, ah, I was hoping for, like,
- 1:47Speaker 2: you know, another one like the previous one. We're like, sorry,
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, and that's.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Good that you can change it up like that.
- 1:54Speaker 3: You've got the the a band that doesn't stick to
- 1:56Speaker 3: you know, the same style and sound and put a
- 2:00Speaker 3: edge on it.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It's always a job well done, I say, thank you. Yeah.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Yeah, So you guys have got a gig coming up
- 2:05Speaker 3: on the weekend at Emma's which I'm going to be
- 2:08Speaker 3: there for, and awesome you guys doing your thing, which
- 2:11Speaker 3: is it's actually a really good venue, Like surprisingly enough,
- 2:14Speaker 3: I grew up in the small little country town back
- 2:17Speaker 3: in the day and I don't live too far from
- 2:19Speaker 3: there now, but.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it was. It's a bizarre building.
- 2:22Speaker 3: It's had many a history and for it to be
- 2:24Speaker 3: bing used what it is now it's really quite refreshing
- 2:27Speaker 3: and so good choice.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I love it. I actually ended up there doing a
- 2:32Speaker 2: solo gig supporting a friend of mine a few months ago,
- 2:35Speaker 2: and I kind of walked inside of me, oh hang on,
- 2:38Speaker 2: we should play it. It's just a perfect size, lovely
- 2:42Speaker 2: blood you know, great absolutely for so long.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, yeah, wow.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I think the last one I seen you guys, which
- 2:50Speaker 3: was at the Line in Residence shortly after that fifty
- 2:53Speaker 3: last year, which is always it's such a tiny little
- 2:56Speaker 3: venue and it's a bit strange. I think you guys
- 2:58Speaker 3: brought a bit of a crowd there.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It's actually kind of bigger than if it feels like
- 3:03Speaker 2: because you've got a lot of space, it kind of
- 3:05Speaker 2: spreads it out a little, like it was actually pretty
- 3:07Speaker 2: great down there.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, so we're in the back part where all
- 3:10Speaker 3: the motorbikes and there tables are. But yeah, they're good
- 3:14Speaker 3: little venues, aren't they When you get to do shows like.
- 3:16Speaker 2: That, I on the whole and someone who will lean
- 3:20Speaker 2: towards a smaller venue just for that sort of intimacy
- 3:23Speaker 2: close to the crowd, you know, like, yeah, I rely
- 3:26Speaker 2: on that visual sort of communication where I can see
- 3:30Speaker 2: people and they can see me kind of thing.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, true.
- 3:32Speaker 3: It's always it hits where you know where it's all started,
- 3:35Speaker 3: isn't it the Sweaty Pub?
- 3:36Speaker 1: Somewhere in that back room? Actually it was Ben.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Ben Ley did a gig at the Citadel, I know
- 3:43Speaker 3: that venue that's been repurposed, which is amazing acoustics in there,
- 3:48Speaker 3: and that went really well from.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Too so awesome.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:50Speaker 3: There's a few little pockets around the place that are
- 3:53Speaker 3: hidden some good bye yeah yeah.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:55Speaker 3: So we've got the new album happening, and so what
- 3:58Speaker 3: can what can we expect to see from that? When
- 4:01Speaker 3: is that thinking about coming out?
- 4:03Speaker 2: It's early days honestly, like really got any sort of
- 4:06Speaker 2: like firm plans on what it'll be like and when
- 4:10Speaker 2: it'll when it'll happen, but it's something we've kind of
- 4:12Speaker 2: had in our minds for a while. So yeah, it
- 4:15Speaker 2: was really funny. Actually, we're practiced a couple of months
- 4:17Speaker 2: ago and we were rehearsing this office, which is three
- 4:21Speaker 2: floors above a pub, and it was like, I think, like,
- 4:26Speaker 2: I don't know, we practice Monday nights. But it was
- 4:29Speaker 2: weird because it's people in the pub and there was
- 4:30Speaker 2: all this party action going on, and suddenly there's this
- 4:34Speaker 2: knock on the door and there's this young chick out
- 4:37Speaker 2: there who's got to be twenty maybe yeah, and she's like, oh,
- 4:40Speaker 2: I just heard any music. You gott to sound sick,
- 4:42Speaker 2: and she kind of like looked in the room and
- 4:45Speaker 2: we were like going, you know, hi and waiting to
- 4:49Speaker 2: get back to it, and she's going, you know, keep
- 4:52Speaker 2: out it, guys, don't give up. You've got a really good.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Thanks, we'll get there one day. So funny.
- 5:02Speaker 1: That is so funny.
- 5:02Speaker 3: You know the approval of the young uns, it's yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 3: I always say, you know, it's funny when they discover
- 5:07Speaker 3: new music on their Spotify playlist, and it's like babes,
- 5:10Speaker 3: it's been around forever. It's I've got my I've got
- 5:15Speaker 3: twenty something year older two daughters, which often make me
- 5:18Speaker 3: giggle with that sort of stuff.
- 5:21Speaker 2: It's cool these days because no one in that age
- 5:25Speaker 2: gives a shit about genre anymore. Like back when I
- 5:27Speaker 2: was a kid, Like, if you liked music, you liked
- 5:29Speaker 2: your genre, and if you hard around something outside your
- 5:33Speaker 2: genre it was a bit weird. You're like, actually liked
- 5:35Speaker 2: this as well, you know, yeah, like person or a
- 5:40Speaker 2: punk person or whatever it might have been.
- 5:41Speaker 3: You know, yeah, yeah, yeah, and I know it, particularly
- 5:44Speaker 3: for myself when we were at teenageers, it was the
- 5:47Speaker 3: more you know, obscure, it was the more cooler when
- 5:51Speaker 3: accepted by your peers.
- 5:52Speaker 1: You were you know, anything was like no, it wasn't cool.
- 5:55Speaker 3: You I remember not liking Silver Chair in the day
- 5:57Speaker 3: because it was too mainstream.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I mean, you go back to these bands years later
- 6:02Speaker 2: and you go, Okay, I know why everyone loved this.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely brilliant. You know do you guys have had
- 6:09Speaker 3: a few lineup changes in your time. Obviously, easself and
- 6:11Speaker 3: Kelly have been the two four fronts that square it
- 6:15Speaker 3: all started, wasn't it with you too? Me give us
- 6:17Speaker 3: the good listeners of having Meg a bit of a
- 6:19Speaker 3: history of screen Theeeder and where you started and how
- 6:22Speaker 3: you've come to be where you're at now.
- 6:25Speaker 2: So it's going back a long time. But back in
- 6:28Speaker 2: like nineteen ninety, my friend Tony who was our original
- 6:33Speaker 2: drummer and I moved down from Townsville where we had
- 6:35Speaker 2: a band Wow, and we met Kelly through the music
- 6:39Speaker 2: scene back then because it was already networking back then,
- 6:41Speaker 2: and he saw each other gigs and stuff, and she
- 6:45Speaker 2: offered us her house. She had a rehearsal room just
- 6:48Speaker 2: in her lounge room where bands would come and practice
- 6:50Speaker 2: every day, and so we ended up rehearsing at her house.
- 6:54Speaker 2: We kicked out our bass play one afternoon because he
- 6:56Speaker 2: was being a bit of jerk and Kelly kind of like.
- 7:01Speaker 2: We turned around to Kell and went, you know the
- 7:03Speaker 2: songs right, because she'd been basically at our band practices
- 7:06Speaker 2: for a few months, and she stepped in and started
- 7:08Speaker 2: playing bass. Shortly after that, we recorded some demos and
- 7:11Speaker 2: sent them to some record companies in Sydney and they
- 7:15Speaker 2: won Company Survival took us on and said you guys
- 7:18Speaker 2: should change the name because our old name was the Madman,
- 7:21Speaker 2: and it was I guess at the time in that era,
- 7:24Speaker 2: it kind of sounded a bit old hat, yeah, And
- 7:27Speaker 2: so we did, and then everything started accelerating for us.
- 7:31Speaker 2: We released a couple of albums, three albums really fast
- 7:34Speaker 2: in the early nineties, started touring heaps. Then we lost
- 7:37Speaker 2: our drummer Tony in ninety I think it was like
- 7:40Speaker 2: ninety five ninety six, and a new drummer, Dean, stepped
- 7:44Speaker 2: in and he kind of gave the band a whole
- 7:46Speaker 2: lise of life and we had another great seven or
- 7:49Speaker 2: eight years touring off that, and then we had a
- 7:52Speaker 2: slide period kind of in the mid noughties where we
- 7:55Speaker 2: sort of broke up for a while and we didn't
- 7:58Speaker 2: had like our last gig ever, which is a sure
- 8:01Speaker 2: fire away that you're never actually going to slit it up.
- 8:03Speaker 1: That's so funny.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And then we started putting it together again. About ten
- 8:06Speaker 2: years ago. A label in Melbourne started reishing our albums
- 8:09Speaker 2: on vinyl and we saw tour again and all the
- 8:12Speaker 2: old punners are out there. They're like, yeah, you're back.
- 8:14Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, we're fucking back, dude. Everyone's loving it.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And absolutely, you know, like we sort of had this
- 8:22Speaker 2: renaissance maybe I guess you'd.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Call it extended renaissance.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Yeah, we put out a couple of new albums in
- 8:28Speaker 2: the interim and gone on tour again, did all the stuff.
- 8:31Speaker 2: So it's like, you know, it's amazing that when I
- 8:36Speaker 2: think back that we have been going so long, we
- 8:38Speaker 2: can still go out on tour and play to people
- 8:40Speaker 2: who know the songs and they smile and they dance
- 8:42Speaker 2: and they yell at us and they have a great
- 8:43Speaker 2: time and whatever. It's amazing.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Absolutely. I remember when I seen it.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I'd been there sometime since seeing you lasted, probably a
- 8:50Speaker 3: big day out somewhere around the place when as a
- 8:53Speaker 3: diffy and just there and think, I remember now why
- 8:56Speaker 3: I love scream for you so much. It was just
- 8:58Speaker 3: such a nice moment. And yeah, your old songs, they
- 9:01Speaker 3: just they hit. They can't not love good stuff. So
- 9:04Speaker 3: if it makes you grow and you're like I'm just
- 9:06Speaker 3: remembering the words, I'm like, wow, this stuff is like
- 9:08Speaker 3: implanted into my psyche conscience.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Right, it was very cool.
- 9:11Speaker 3: But yeah, it's always nice to see when bands do
- 9:14Speaker 3: that and come back and and exciting too, that you're
- 9:17Speaker 3: making some new stuff.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I'm really cute looking forward to hearing that.
- 9:20Speaker 2: These shows. We've got four shows this month, and yeah,
- 9:23Speaker 2: we're doing something different with concentrating on Kelly songs.
- 9:26Speaker 1: So like, yeah, I've.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Never really gone out and done an entirely Kelly set before,
- 9:31Speaker 2: so with these sets, we're doing almost entirely Kelly. There's
- 9:36Speaker 2: one or two which I'm the lead vocalist song, but yeah,
- 9:39Speaker 2: all the others are Kelly songs. So it's really different because.
- 9:42Speaker 3: The two things hardest than the world is just sing
- 9:44Speaker 3: and play bass. I know, I'm a bass player too,
- 9:46Speaker 3: and she does it.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you're right because on the guitar loose and doesn't matter.
- 9:52Speaker 2: You know, on a basis you got a hold it stating.
- 9:54Speaker 3: You do and it's like what you're singing is not
- 9:55Speaker 3: what you're playing, and it's like it's unless you're sort
- 9:59Speaker 3: of like good, get you down part your base and
- 10:01Speaker 3: then get the vocals for me. Anyway, it's it's not
- 10:04Speaker 3: a it doesn't come naturally, and some song's obviously easier
- 10:08Speaker 3: than others.
- 10:08Speaker 2: You're just gonna move because some other humans have come
- 10:11Speaker 2: to going to my little office room here.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Nice I've got the green screen on the back, which
- 10:17Speaker 3: behind that is my window, but usually it's my wall
- 10:19Speaker 3: of base, my living room slash home. It looks very
- 10:23Speaker 3: much like yours, my normal wall that I usually do
- 10:26Speaker 3: it in front of. It's always nice when you get
- 10:28Speaker 3: to have everything collected on the wall, isn't it. I
- 10:31Speaker 3: just need a bigger wall. I've got chimney vases. I'm like,
- 10:33Speaker 3: she ha, I gotta move stuff around. Yeah, so well
- 10:37Speaker 3: that's exciting. So Cal's going to be taking the stage
- 10:40Speaker 3: and doing her thing. Girl power, more girls and more
- 10:43Speaker 3: girls in her for sure. Yeah, no, that's awesome. So
- 10:47Speaker 3: she's it's so good to see, Like, you know, she's
- 10:50Speaker 3: so un assuming, like when you see Cal, she definitely
- 10:53Speaker 3: doesn't look like she's the front woman of a you know,
- 10:55Speaker 3: an old indie band, which is really cool. And then
- 10:58Speaker 3: you see her on stage and she just lights it
- 10:59Speaker 3: up and brings it. She's amazing.
- 11:02Speaker 2: So you guys, I said to her the other day,
- 11:03Speaker 2: I said, Cal, if you're doing the set, you've got
- 11:05Speaker 2: to be in charge of the bands room between songs.
- 11:07Speaker 2: She's like, you're fine, and you're fine.
- 11:11Speaker 1: She's the rose between some thorns.
- 11:14Speaker 3: He Actually, you guys have got a good relationship has
- 11:17Speaker 3: I said, you and Kell been working together for so long.
- 11:19Speaker 3: It's almost like a music marriage as they call them.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And yeah, I guess so you could.
- 11:25Speaker 3: And when you bounce off each other and you know
- 11:26Speaker 3: each other so well, it kind of makes so you know,
- 11:28Speaker 3: the fun stuff extra good. You know you can add
- 11:31Speaker 3: live and can trust someone another to like step up
- 11:33Speaker 3: and like bring it up on it.
- 11:35Speaker 1: There might be some technical.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Differities or you know, whatever it may be, which is
- 11:38Speaker 3: always really nice to see that on stage two. And
- 11:41Speaker 3: I think you guys do that part really well. Definitely.
- 11:44Speaker 3: It's one big fan. So you've got show coming up
- 11:47Speaker 3: on Saturday. Is a Saturday night, I think it is.
- 11:50Speaker 1: It's Friday, Friday, Friday Night. And who what are the
- 11:53Speaker 1: supports that you've got happening.
- 11:55Speaker 2: So there's a local couple of local bands. One is
- 11:57Speaker 2: for Loon to the Moon and the other band and
- 12:00Speaker 2: it's called John O's Mate Sheep, which is there amongst
- 12:03Speaker 2: some of the weirder band names I've heard, But yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 1: They are.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I've seen those guys play it before and I know
- 12:09Speaker 3: a couple of them and their their quality.
- 12:11Speaker 1: They're quite awesome.
- 12:12Speaker 3: They're on the up and coming. So that's that's a
- 12:14Speaker 3: nice little fit for you guys. And so where the
- 12:17Speaker 3: is the next what's happening for yourselves?
- 12:19Speaker 1: Around after Friday?
- 12:21Speaker 2: The following night we're playing in Ipswich. Had a place
- 12:23Speaker 2: for the studio one eight eight, that's right, Yeah, following Friday,
- 12:26Speaker 2: following Saturday, we're playing at the Precinct in Nambour, Okay. Yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 2: then like one and a half weeks after there, on
- 12:33Speaker 2: Thursday the thirtieth, we're playing the Princess Theater and Brizzie
- 12:37Speaker 2: Bleak Squad at a Leader's band.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Oh oh excellent. Yeah, is she a gem?
- 12:42Speaker 3: Seen her play a few times, you know, on her
- 12:44Speaker 3: own and obviously with the Magic Dirt, but now she's
- 12:47Speaker 3: a true, true jem. She's a Yeah, she's good. She's
- 12:50Speaker 3: good at stage, she's great on her own.
- 12:52Speaker 1: So have you seen God?
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yes, it's awesome.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Yeah, she's a powerhouse, little powerhouse. It's exciting. So look,
- 12:59Speaker 3: thank you coming and having a chat with us today.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Have you
