- 0:41Yeah.
- 0:42Jon: eighties.
- 0:43Kearns: It's riding The, uh, short circuit fandom wave came out the same year.
- 0:50Yeah, yeah.
- 0:52They didn't have to deal with promo
- 0:53Jon: year for robots.
- 0:55Kearns: robot.
- 0:55Yes, it was, wasn't When did, um, Rocky, Rocky four come out?
- 1:00Ryan: Oh
- 1:01Kearns: 'cause there was a big robot in that too.
- 1:03That was like the robot Renaissance era.
- 1:04Ryan: 87.
- 1:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:07I mean, happy birthday Pauly.
- 1:10Jon: I just wanted Rocky to fight it.
- 1:12Ryan: beat up
- 1:13Kearns: That would've been cool.
- 1:14Rocky five should have been.
- 1:17Mad versus machine, and then you find out it's like the new Terminator
- 1:20movie T three, well actually it would've been T two if they, if
- 1:25they got it out before T two.
- 1:27But anyway, chopping mall.
- 1:29Yeah, it's, it's something, it, it is what it is and it's good at what it does.
- 1:35Ryan: Yes,
- 1:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:37Ryan: and it has,
- 1:38Kearns: it has,
- 1:38Ryan: I'll say it right
- 1:39Kearns: I would say, right outright, it has
- 1:41Ryan: from one of our
- 1:41Kearns: from
- 1:42Ryan: um, villains in our film series, Angus Grimm.
- 1:48Jon: Yep.
- 1:49Ryan: He
- 1:49Kearns: and what does he play?
- 1:51Ryan: in a small cameo asking about those robots.
- 1:54Kearns: Robot?
- 1:55That damn robots,
- 1:57Ryan: Those damn robots over
- 1:58Kearns: robot.
- 1:59He says, boy, go find those robots
- 2:02Ryan: but he's credited
- 2:03Kearns: discredited
- 2:04Ryan: Lawrence
- 2:04Kearns: as
- 2:06Ryan: not
- 2:07Jon: Yep.
- 2:07His, his
- 2:08Kearns: real name.
- 2:09Interesting.
- 2:11Jon: Yep.
- 2:11Ryan: Because we were watching
- 2:12Kearns: We were watching it.
- 2:13Ryan: and I, and I was like, wait a minute,
- 2:15Kearns: Wait a minute.
- 2:16Ryan: man?
- 2:16Kearns: tall man,
- 2:17Ryan: yeah.
- 2:17Kearns: like, yeah.
- 2:18Ryan: it's
- 2:18Kearns: I'm like,
- 2:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:19Kearns: weird.
- 2:20Like,
- 2:21Ryan: he's
- 2:21Kearns: no, he's not talking to Mike.
- 2:23He's not talking to Reggie.
- 2:24Ryan: just in the mall,
- 2:25Kearns: He says in the mall,
- 2:26Ryan: no.
- 2:26Kearns: we
- 2:27Jon: we
- 2:27Kearns: have a very
- 2:29Jon: cast in here with a lot of like eighties horror bonafides.
- 2:35A lot of you get Kelly Marone
- 2:38Fast
- 2:39Kearns: Concert high
- 2:41Jon: Night
- 2:41Kearns: of the,
- 2:43Ryan: Ryan's
- 2:44Kearns: get Brian Hope.
- 2:45Tony O'Dell, who's in karate too.
- 2:47Ryan: Yep.
- 2:48Kearns: Yep.
- 2:49Jon: You
- 2:49Kearns: get Russell Todd,
- 2:51Jon: from
- 2:51Kearns: Friday the 13th too.
- 2:53Yeah.
- 2:53And that.
- 2:54Jon: course Barbara Crampton who's in everything.
- 2:57Ryan: Especially my favorite
- 2:58Kearns: My favorite puppet master.
- 3:00Yeah.
- 3:02The ever looming puppet master.
- 3:04Jon: animate her.
- 3:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 3:07Jon: Mary in a small role, she's in Night of the Comet and like tons and tons of
- 3:13Kearns: Who
- 3:14Jon: movies.
- 3:14Kearns: they just went through the Rolodex.
- 3:15They're like, all right, get everybody.
- 3:18Jon: Okay, so
- 3:19Kearns: This is,
- 3:20Jon: this is,
- 3:21Kearns: uh, Roger Corman, introduction of a Jim Winky.
- 3:25Jon: movie.
- 3:26Kearns: okay.
- 3:27If you go through Jim Winkys, directorial
- 3:30Jon: IMDV,
- 3:33Kearns: you get a sense that the boobs in this movie are not
- 3:36Jon: an
- 3:36Kearns: isolated introduction
- 3:39Jon: his
- 3:39Kearns: career.
- 3:40In fact,
- 3:40Jon: that's
- 3:41Kearns: mostly what he does.
- 3:43He knows how to get butts in seats.
- 3:45Jon: For example,
- 3:46Kearns: For example.
- 3:47I just
- 3:47Jon: took down one of his other
- 3:50Kearns: director efforts
- 3:51Jon: the
- 3:52Kearns: Bear Wedge project
- 3:53Jon: two.
- 3:54Scared topless.
- 3:56Kearns: He's like a USA up all night connoisseur.
- 3:59That's what it sounds like.
- 4:00Jon: Yeah.
- 4:00Kearns: made movies for right there,
- 4:02Jon: I
- 4:02Kearns: think a lot of his movies were even.
- 4:05Jon: beyond that.
- 4:05I
- 4:05Kearns: I think he had a lot of
- 4:07Jon: Max
- 4:07Kearns: movies.
- 4:08Yeah.
- 4:08Yeah.
- 4:09Ryan: research
- 4:09Kearns: my research he did.
- 4:11Yeah.
- 4:11Ryan: A lot of skin.
- 4:12Kearns: A lot of skin.
- 4:13Jon: The
- 4:14Kearns: King of
- 4:15Jon: X.
- 4:16Ryan: the king of
- 4:16Kearns: I bet he's made Mint off it too.
- 4:19Like he's, he's driving around in a brand newish Corvette
- 4:22Jon: he's also the voice
- 4:23Kearns: robot.
- 4:24Ryan: Yep.
- 4:25Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 4:25That's pretty cool.
- 4:27That's so the robots have voices to the listeners, Johnny Five is alive.
- 4:33Jon: yes.
- 4:35sinister than Johnny Five.
- 4:37Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 4:38Oscar, I am really pissed off.
- 4:42Ryan: the best scene.
- 4:44Jon: And we have another celebrity location too.
- 4:47Kearns: Oh really?
- 4:48Ryan: Yep.
- 4:49Kearns: yeah.
- 4:49Where's that?
- 4:50Jon: mall as Commando.
- 4:52Kearns: Oh, sweet.
- 4:53That's pretty cool.
- 4:54I wish that they ended up in the same reeds outside of the airport as
- 4:58commando when he jumps out of the plane.
- 5:00But this movie got a good deal of action.
- 5:03Uh, for a horror flick.
- 5:05Ryan: Do you
- 5:07or
- 5:07Kearns: Protectors are Kill Bot.
- 5:10Ryan: That's the question.
- 5:11Kearns: I like protectors more because it's
- 5:14Ryan: Okay.
- 5:14Jon: less
- 5:15Kearns: than a.
- 5:16Ryan: Fair.
- 5:17Fair.
- 5:18Kearns: I like when things like that have like non-threatening.
- 5:21Jon: names and then they're super dangerous.
- 5:25Kearns: That's a great idea.
- 5:25Actually,
- 5:27Ryan: but that was the original
- 5:28Kearns: that was the original title and that
- 5:31Ryan: tanked.
- 5:31Jon: Yeah, kill bots wasn't fun.
- 5:34Kearns: topping mall.
- 5:34It's such a better title.
- 5:36Ryan: the poster severed
- 5:39Kearns: mean,
- 5:39Jon: there's not a lot of chopping,
- 5:41Kearns: yeah, it just, it just goes,
- 5:44Ryan: There's a little
- 5:45Kearns: um,
- 5:45Ryan: They go right for the jugular.
- 5:47Jon: a little, but it's
- 5:48Kearns: it.
- 5:48Jon: mostly lasers.
- 5:49Ryan: True freaking laser beans.
- 5:52Kearns: When you think chopping mall though, you think slasher,
- 5:54some dude is going in the dressing rooms and then you watch the trailer
- 5:58and you're like, what is this?
- 6:00Is that a garbage can?
- 6:02And then it's just like, and it rolls off to massacre people.
- 6:06It's a good trailer, by the way.
- 6:08Jon: Yeah.
- 6:08Ryan: good.
- 6:09The whole movie is, it's a hidden gem rotten tomatoes.
- 6:13It's 57% like rotten.
- 6:16I don't, I, I think that's a lie.
- 6:19It's a lie.
- 6:19Kearns: I don't know.
- 6:20I, I put a lot of stock and rotten tomatoes, but it's because
- 6:23of, of the campy boominess, I think, more than anything.
- 6:26Ryan: It's true.
- 6:27Jon: Yeah, because they, it,
- 6:28Kearns: A lot of those eighties movies,
- 6:30Jon: do well on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 6:34Kearns: the porkies, clones and stuff like that.
- 6:36Jon: Yeah.
- 6:37Kearns: Yeah,
- 6:37Jon: Yeah.
- 6:39Kearns: like the, even the ski movies and stuff, they don't go into full topless.
- 6:43I think maybe a couple of 'em do, but it's mostly just the eighties.
- 6:48They lean further into the eighties action and that the montagey nature
- 6:52of it all, which made eighties movies great, eighties movies.
- 6:56This one, it doesn't commit to either side.
- 6:58It just kind of does both parallel.
- 7:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:01Kearns: It's a good hang.
- 7:02It is.
- 7:03'cause it does 'em both well, but it doesn't like, you know what I mean?
- 7:07It's not trying to be a great movie.
- 7:09That's another example of one that's not trying to be a great movie.
- 7:12Jon: knows what it is.
- 7:13Kearns: Yep.
- 7:13And there's the, there's no, well there, Paul Blart.
- 7:17The robots are Paul Blart, but
- 7:20Jon: Yeah.
- 7:20Kearns: yeah.
- 7:21Yeah,
- 7:21Ryan: And they
- 7:22Kearns: some super good acting in it too.
- 7:23Like it's waiting, it's gonna pick us off in beer, one by one
- 7:27man, and the people are, hold up.
- 7:29So let's go through the briefly, like what sets the robots off.
- 7:32These are robots that are made to protect, for God's sakes.
- 7:35Jon: Yeah, so, so these are,
- 7:38Kearns: Yeah, they're, the robots are a multi security initiative.
- 7:42It's kind of excessive.
- 7:44Jon: I
- 7:44Kearns: mean,
- 7:45Jon: to
- 7:45Kearns: begin with, they have the ability to incapacitate
- 7:49Jon: uh, a
- 7:50Kearns: seat.
- 7:51Jon: like,
- 7:51Kearns: not let, but they
- 7:54Jon: start
- 7:54Kearns: out with the capacity to stop it, and then there's a lightning storm that
- 8:00Jon: strikes
- 8:01Kearns: them all and fries the circuit and they become
- 8:04Jon: independent.
- 8:05Ryan: Very independent.
- 8:07Kearns: Now, are they full-blown AI or are they just malfunctioning
- 8:11thinking everybody's a thief?
- 8:13Like do they want to kill or is it just like a glitch?
- 8:16Wanna kill
- 8:17Jon: and they do not
- 8:18Kearns: and thief?
- 8:18Not
- 8:19Jon: or
- 8:19Kearns: like when in the demonstration, you know, they
- 8:23Jon: show, oh, you
- 8:24Kearns: just need your ID card.
- 8:25So it doesn't mistake you for a criminal if you're in the mall after hours.
- 8:30They, once the, the lightning has struck, there is
- 8:33Jon: no
- 8:34Kearns: recognition of an ID card.
- 8:36It just wants you dead and it doesn't want you to wear pants while it kills you.
- 8:39Let's do a few of like your favorite kills.
- 8:42There's been, there's a couple of good ones.
- 8:45Ryan: Well, mine is, uh, I'm trying to think of her name.
- 8:49Um, uh, Leslie.
- 8:52Kearns: Nobody's.
- 8:53Yeah, I was gonna say, just for the listeners, nobody's memorable.
- 8:56Just so you know.
- 8:57The fact that he got her name to come up in his mind is, is remarkable to me.
- 9:01Ryan: I
- 9:02Kearns: Leslie,
- 9:02Ryan: Leslie's
- 9:03Kearns: is she one of the blondes?
- 9:05Ryan: yes.
- 9:06Kearns: One of the five?
- 9:07Jon: the more endowed
- 9:08Kearns: Yeah.
- 9:09Ryan: And the bitchy one,
- 9:10Kearns: And the bitchy one, I would say.
- 9:12Mm-hmm.
- 9:12Ryan: one.
- 9:12But she goes to
- 9:13Kearns: But she goes to find her boyfriend Mike, because Mike had
- 9:16to go get her Virginia Slims.
- 9:18Ryan: And
- 9:19Kearns: Yeah, I mean it's what you do for your lady.
- 9:21Ryan: well, he did and he got killed
- 9:22Kearns: He got killed for it.
- 9:23Ryan: Id
- 9:24Kearns: It's also what you do for your lady.
- 9:26Oh yeah, exactly.
- 9:28Ryan: but
- 9:28Kearns: Are you 21?
- 9:30Ryan: well, you work at the
- 9:32Kearns: You work at Point?
- 9:33Yeah.
- 9:33True
- 9:34Ryan: Just karate chop.
- 9:35Kearns: karate job.
- 9:35But um,
- 9:36Ryan: It's funny
- 9:37Kearns: it's funny 'cause she's running and you see a laser shoot at her and
- 9:41you see him like, you hear the pew p
- 9:43Ryan: and then she turns
- 9:44Kearns: and then she turns around and you see this big glass.
- 9:46Ryan: and it's like a watermelon
- 9:47Kearns: like a watermelon
- 9:49Ryan: And everyone's
- 9:50Kearns: and everyone's watching it.
- 9:51They're like
- 9:52Ryan: Leslie, what?
- 9:54What happened?
- 9:56Kearns: exploded, Leslie.
- 9:58Ryan: Very
- 9:58Jon: Leslie's definitely my favorite.
- 10:00Kearns: That's your favorite one.
- 10:01It's,
- 10:02Jon: Definitely.
- 10:03Kearns: right?
- 10:04Jon: Uh.
- 10:04Kearns: Uh, yeah.
- 10:05So that's the best part about it.
- 10:07I liked the trying them, trying to make it somewhat creepy.
- 10:11'cause robots in this sense, the way they were doing it are not creepy.
- 10:15When they knocked over all the aquariums or terrariums and all the
- 10:19creepy crawleys were getting everybody.
- 10:21I enjoyed that.
- 10:21That was stupid.
- 10:22Ryan: That was a good
- 10:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:24Mm-hmm.
- 10:25Kearns: The whole movie's stupid.
- 10:26Ryan: I felt bad for Dick.
- 10:27Jon: Like I, I mean,
- 10:30oh, I love
- 10:31Kearns: Dick Miller, I love Dick Miller.
- 10:33Dick Miller's gonna become very prominent in this episode.
- 10:36Mm.
- 10:38Jon: I.
- 10:38Ryan: Dick Miller's such a
- 10:39Kearns: Dick Miller's such a good actor and I knew he was gonna die.
- 10:42And
- 10:45Ryan: Dick Miller, poor Dick
- 10:46Kearns: I mean, you see Dick Miller
- 10:48Jon: a
- 10:48Kearns: in movies and
- 10:49Jon: it's a
- 10:50Kearns: a pretty good chance he's gonna die.
- 10:53Ryan: true, he does
- 10:54Kearns: Now we have to do a deep dive.
- 10:56Dick Miller movie's in the Top five where he makes it to the end of the movie.
- 11:00Ryan: That's like
- 11:01Kearns: That'll be good.
- 11:02Ryan: that that might not
- 11:03Kearns: That might not happen.
- 11:04Yeah.
- 11:06Oh, John's got it working.
- 11:08I, I
- 11:10Jon: well, I mean,
- 11:10Kearns: Spoiler Dick Miller figures vary prominently in my top box.
- 11:16Okay.
- 11:17Got it.
- 11:18I'm getting good at kissing these, but, um, all right.
- 11:21So I mean, they, I mean, we gotta give the people something to chew on here.
- 11:25This, this is not a very deep movie.
- 11:28We're not talking a psychological film here.
- 11:30No, no, not,
- 11:31Jon: all.
- 11:32It's
- 11:32Kearns: it's very, I mean,
- 11:34Jon: even
- 11:34Kearns: before you get to, to the killing, you have
- 11:37Jon: so
- 11:38Kearns: much
- 11:38Jon: eighties,
- 11:39Kearns: like
- 11:40Jon: Susie
- 11:41Kearns: Pulling the, patrons at the d the mall diner
- 11:45Jon: orcas while
- 11:46Kearns: they're wearing, you know, the little crocodile eyes odds.
- 11:49Jon: and
- 11:50Kearns: You know, the big goofed up cowin hair and aqua
- 11:55probably smelling like aqua veva.
- 11:58Let's throw some of that out there too.
- 12:00For fun, man.
- 12:02Jon: Yep.
- 12:02Ryan: Well, there is a film
- 12:03Kearns: There is a film scholar Craig, Ian, man.
- 12:06Ryan: and he did analysis
- 12:07Kearns: he did analysis of the film
- 12:09and he compares the film Paperlessly
- 12:11Ryan: George a
- 12:12Kearns: to George Romero's, Dawn of the Dead,
- 12:14Ryan: Which is,
- 12:15Kearns: which is,
- 12:16Ryan: also
- 12:16Kearns: know
- 12:17Ryan: mall
- 12:18Kearns: they talk about his drug problem.
- 12:20Ryan: well,
- 12:21Kearns: made the joke.
- 12:22I said Short Circuit meets Dawn of the Dead because of their hold up in a mall.
- 12:26So I guess I made the comparison too, but he wasn't like actually saying that
- 12:30they're equal movies or anything, right?
- 12:32Ryan: no, no.
- 12:32He
- 12:32Kearns: No.
- 12:32Okay.
- 12:33More detail where he
- 12:35Ryan: anti-capitalism parable
- 12:37Kearns: terrible
- 12:38Ryan: Carter
- 12:38Kearns: the Jimmy Carter years.
- 12:40Ryan: that
- 12:40Kearns: Suggesting that chopping wall functions in a similar way as a comment
- 12:43on consumption during This is very deep.
- 12:46Jon: could, I can see that
- 12:47Kearns: This is very deep for rogue scanner robots that
- 12:50were struck by lightning.
- 12:53Jon: Listen, if, if I were going to, to, I would go into this sort of police state
- 12:59sense that you got in that era also where
- 13:02Kearns: That's more believable.
- 13:03Jon: hard on crime
- 13:05Ryan: Yep.
- 13:06Jon: and
- 13:07Kearns: aren't
- 13:07Jon: be
- 13:08Kearns: hard enough on their own,
- 13:09Jon: So
- 13:09Kearns: we need robots to do it.
- 13:11Yeah, that's, that's I Dawn of the dead.
- 13:15I buy that.
- 13:16Rogue consumerism, the hoard of people trying to store the mall.
- 13:19Like I buy that for this movie.
- 13:21I, I just can't give them the credit that that would come with
- 13:25like, nobody was in the back.
- 13:26Like, you know what we should do with expanded metaphor about
- 13:30the, I'm like, uh, I don't know.
- 13:33I
- 13:33Ryan: Good
- 13:34Kearns: think you found some boxes and Yeah, you spray painted some
- 13:37boxes, the color of aluminum and put some dude in it and here we go.
- 13:41We're off to the races.
- 13:43Got Jugs McGee and he and Jug McGee's little sister.
- 13:47Oh.
- 13:49But it's a good watch.
- 13:50It's just, I don't know.
- 13:51I'm being pretty critical.
- 13:52I shouldn't be you.
- 13:54Jon: you, you go from like working
- 13:58Kearns: In a mall to having an after hours mall party in the furniture
- 14:03store that the guys work at.
- 14:04Jon: and just
- 14:06Kearns: A random married couple that shows up to hang with them.
- 14:10Yeah.
- 14:10They don't work in, I was like an, it's like a mall orgy.
- 14:14When we were talking about the, the least horny place in
- 14:16the world is a bowling alley.
- 14:18The most horny place in the world might be, might be a mall.
- 14:23I mean, not the, I don't know about the Sears in the mall, but.
- 14:26It's definitely on the other side of that I, a orgy in a mall is way more
- 14:32believable than an orgy in a bowling alley is basically what I'm getting at.
- 14:37Ryan: and there's definitely an orgy
- 14:38Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:39Orgy going not.
- 14:39Yeah.
- 14:40Which might be, who got the robots so mad?
- 14:43Jon: They were jealous.
- 14:44Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:44Wow.
- 14:45Don't worry, you'll get in on the game.
- 14:46Just wait till 2020.
- 14:49You'll have a Renaissance.
- 14:51these robots are really,
- 14:52Jon: efficient killers.
- 14:54They
- 14:54Kearns: learn steal almost immediately, like sneaking up on
- 14:57the tech and killing him while he's.
- 14:59Jon: is, you know, not
- 15:01Kearns: When he on the phone because he can't die while he's on the
- 15:04phone because someone will know.
- 15:06Mm-hmm.
- 15:07You're talking about like eight bit processing technology in 1986.
- 15:11So we're talking floppy A drives here, guys.
- 15:14These things are thinking quick.
- 15:17This is back what guys?
- 15:18When it took a computer, minutes to load a photograph and not, not a very,
- 15:25well, not a very large one at that.
- 15:27Jon: Yeah, and it, that computer
- 15:29Kearns: Took up your entire desk.
- 15:30Yep.
- 15:32It got hot as hell too.
- 15:34Ryan: Yes it did.
- 15:35Kearns: Our first desktop, I wouldn't have to have a heated room 'cause my
- 15:39desktop PC was so hot in 1995, so,
- 15:45Ryan: God, windows 95.
- 15:48Kearns: yep.
- 15:49God, now we're really getting there.
- 15:51Ryan: you
- 15:51Kearns: But yeah.
- 15:52Ryan: you
- 15:53Kearns: You
- 15:53Ryan: robots are
- 15:53Kearns: mentioned the robots are smart.
- 15:55Ryan: The teenagers
- 15:56Kearns: teenagers trapped in
- 15:57Ryan: even call them
- 15:58Kearns: can even call them.
- 15:59Ryan: in their early twenties.
- 16:00They're, they're somewhere
- 16:02Kearns: somewhere
- 16:03Ryan: there.
- 16:03Kearns: around there.
- 16:04Ryan: don't even
- 16:05Kearns: you're definitely not making them as teenagers, but they're like 40.
- 16:09Jon: the age vague.
- 16:10Kearns: They're like 40.
- 16:11It's like the quintessential, like 9 0 2 1.
- 16:13Oh, it was Luke, um, what was his name?
- 16:15The guy who played Dylan was like 39 years old.
- 16:18Yeah.
- 16:18He is like,
- 16:19Jon: Ian Ziering was older than all of 'em.
- 16:21Kearns: wow.
- 16:22interesting.
- 16:23Ryan: as much as it shows how smart
- 16:25Kearns: Shows how smart they are.
- 16:26Ryan: they're
- 16:27Kearns: The, they're
- 16:27Ryan: their own
- 16:28Kearns: kind of smart in their own way.
- 16:29Like think the
- 16:30Ryan: They put
- 16:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:31Kearns: They put the propane tanks on top,
- 16:33Ryan: they get the protector in
- 16:34Kearns: get the protector in there, guy gets out.
- 16:37And um,
- 16:38Ryan: Allison, right?
- 16:39Kearns: Allison, right?
- 16:40Is that the main charact?
- 16:41Ryan: the
- 16:41Kearns: You know, now that
- 16:42Ryan: go.
- 16:43Kearns: there we go.
- 16:43Ryan: Parks.
- 16:44Kearns: by Allison Parks.
- 16:45There we go.
- 16:46Ryan: Getting that all Confu.
- 16:48No, it's Allison
- 16:49Kearns: No, it's Allison Parks Mar.
- 16:50Jon: Maroney.
- 16:51Ryan: is Kelly Maroney.
- 16:52The
- 16:52Kearns: Kelly Marone.
- 16:53The character is Allison Parks.
- 16:54Ryan: That's where
- 16:55Jon: Yes.
- 16:56Kearns: where I'm getting the confusion right there.
- 16:57Ryan: Allison though,
- 16:58Kearns: where Allison though, she shoots the gun, she shoots the gun
- 17:01Ryan: and hits the propane
- 17:02Kearns: and hits the propane tanks exploding via, uh, elevator,
- 17:04Ryan: a pretty cool
- 17:05Kearns: which is a pretty cool scene.
- 17:06Mm-hmm.
- 17:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:08Kearns: But they're also.
- 17:09The robots outsmart them before that they, when they're trying to
- 17:12escape the furniture store, they go into the, air conditioner dump
- 17:16Ryan: True.
- 17:17Kearns: and the robots turn the heat on.
- 17:19Ryan: Yep.
- 17:19Kearns: Oh, that's cool.
- 17:21Yeah.
- 17:23So, all right, so you got like the clever girl stuff from
- 17:27Jurassic Park going on here.
- 17:29Like they can use door handles now, that kind of thing.
- 17:33That kind of thing's going on.
- 17:34All right.
- 17:35so how do they, how do they outsmart the bots?
- 17:37How do they take these?
- 17:38Actually, I don't even know.
- 17:39We're pretty early in the episode to get to how they win.
- 17:42is there any other trivia about the movie?
- 17:44It's pretty bare bones.
- 17:46Sort of movie
- 17:47Ryan: Kelly Maroney
- 17:48Kearns: Kelly Maroney reports.
- 17:50Dana Kimmel,
- 17:51Ryan: the, uh, main
- 17:52Kearns: the, uh, main actress in Friday, the 13th, part three,
- 17:55Ryan: a little
- 17:56Kearns: and a little movie called
- 17:58Ryan: Sweet 16,
- 17:59Kearns: 16, which is on my radar now.
- 18:02Uh, the slasher film from 1983.
- 18:05Ryan: but
- 18:05Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 18:06Ryan: wanna do
- 18:06Kearns: But she didn't wanna do anything sexual,
- 18:08Ryan: so
- 18:09Kearns: so
- 18:10Ryan: we're just
- 18:11Kearns: they were like, alright, we're.
- 18:12Ryan: get Kelly Maroney and when.
- 18:16Kearns: When
- 18:17Ryan: Casted her
- 18:18Kearns: casted her
- 18:19Ryan: at John's smiling
- 18:20Kearns: at John Smiley, because I think he knows where I'm headed with this,
- 18:22Ryan: wanted to
- 18:22Kearns: because he wanted to date her,
- 18:24Ryan: her
- 18:24Kearns: because he liked her act or Weinstein of him.
- 18:27Ryan: a very, very,
- 18:28Jon: Yeah.
- 18:29Kearns: very, very, yeah.
- 18:30Jon: What, what, what's, what's funny about that is.
- 18:34Kearns: That character is one of the few that don't take
- 18:37clothes off or really have.
- 18:40Actual sex.
- 18:41Jon: scene,
- 18:42Kearns: Interesting
- 18:43Ryan: it's true.
- 18:45Kearns: that that part got completely removed.
- 18:48Ryan: 19 minutes
- 18:49Kearns: 19 minutes.
- 18:50Exactly.
- 18:51Hmm.
- 18:51Ryan: this film.
- 18:52Jon: I,
- 18:52Ryan: Is it lost?
- 18:53Do you
- 18:53Kearns: Is it lost, do you think that footage
- 18:55Ryan: it's
- 18:55Kearns: do you think it's not on the disc?
- 18:57Ryan: okay,
- 18:58Kearns: God.
- 18:58Somebody's gotta call vinegar.
- 19:00the
- 19:01They'll find it.
- 19:03Ryan: vinegar syndrome,
- 19:04Jon: sure it's out there.
- 19:05Kearns: Yeah.
- 19:05That's gotta be somewhere.
- 19:07Ryan: chopping mall, I'll buy it.
- 19:10Kearns: Uncut.
- 19:11Uncut.
- 19:12More orgy.
- 19:14But so lightning brings 'em to life.
- 19:16How do they take 'em out
- 19:17Ryan: I mean, they take him out by the
- 19:19Kearns: individually?
- 19:20Yeah.
- 19:21Elevator trap was one.
- 19:22Jon: Explosion fire,
- 19:24Ryan: yep.
- 19:24Jon: I.
- 19:25Kearns: The mirror.
- 19:26Ryan: was
- 19:26Kearns: mirror drink was cool.
- 19:28Uhhuh,
- 19:28Jon: huh.
- 19:29Ryan: shot,
- 19:29Kearns: when they shot, um, they had like mannequins set up.
- 19:32Ryan: and then
- 19:33Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 19:33And they revealed behind the curtain in the mirror and the
- 19:36laser shoots it back lining
- 19:38Ryan: The protector.
- 19:39I think
- 19:39Kearns: protector.
- 19:40I think three.
- 19:40Ryan: But that kills
- 19:41Kearns: But that kills Linda, which
- 19:44Ryan: feel
- 19:44Kearns: I feel Rick's.
- 19:46Ryan: This is where Rick
- 19:47Kearns: This is where Rick kills himself.
- 19:48He sacrifices himself.
- 19:50Ryan: go-kart
- 19:51Kearns: a go-kart into one of the protector three,
- 19:54Ryan: killing it in himself.
- 19:55Kearns: it and himself
- 19:56Ryan: I,
- 19:56Kearns: and I, I just
- 19:58Ryan: waste.
- 19:58Kearns: think it was a waste.
- 19:59Ryan: He should have jumped
- 20:00Kearns: He should have jumped it out of the go-kart.
- 20:02I mean, I don't know if I'm being like, but
- 20:04Ryan: but I.
- 20:07Kearns: Well, that's one of those predictable things in horror movies
- 20:12in particular, if you have a.
- 20:14Jon: a couple and
- 20:15Kearns: One of the two dies.
- 20:17You know, the other one says
- 20:19Ryan: Fair.
- 20:20Kearns: there's almost never, unless it's the final girl, there's almost never that
- 20:26Jon: extra
- 20:27Kearns: person from a couple that,
- 20:28Jon: lives.
- 20:29Kearns: Hmm.
- 20:29Ryan: Okay.
- 20:30Kearns: I never thought about that.
- 20:31Ryan: How he does it
- 20:32Kearns: How he does it though, it's just like.
- 20:36Ryan: and it's like
- 20:37Kearns: I, I,
- 20:38Jon: I, I,
- 20:39Kearns: I will say that's my least
- 20:41Jon: favorite
- 20:41Kearns: desk too,
- 20:42Jon: two
- 20:42Kearns: probably.
- 20:43Yeah.
- 20:44Jon: because it's the one that looks the worst.
- 20:46Kearns: Okay.
- 20:47Ryan: definitely.
- 20:48Kearns: I mean, if they're moving a cart in a mall to a proper robot, that's gotta
- 20:53be pretty rough with the camera work.
- 20:55In 1986,
- 20:56Ryan: Susie's burning
- 20:58Kearns: burning
- 20:59Ryan: 10 times
- 20:59Kearns: has been
- 21:00Ryan: and that, and that
- 21:01Kearns: and that, and that stunt person was on fire.
- 21:04Ryan: it
- 21:04Jon: Oh yeah.
- 21:05Kearns: Well, that was something they had down by then.
- 21:07Lighting people on fire was something we were good at.
- 21:10Jon: Yeah.
- 21:10Kearns: Yeah,
- 21:11Ryan: the person's just stood, they're just like laid
- 21:13Kearns: just like laid out and just
- 21:14Ryan: I'm like, are they gonna put'em
- 21:15Kearns: like, are
- 21:17Ryan: Like, I wanna make sure
- 21:19Kearns: I wanna make sure they're okay
- 21:22Jon: Stop, drop and roll.
- 21:24Ryan: Oh, they, they dropped.
- 21:25Kearns: if they.
- 21:26Ryan: rolling.
- 21:28Jon: Yeah,
- 21:28Kearns: There's just so much.
- 21:2980.
- 21:30Jon: in this.
- 21:30Like I was, I was just looking back through,
- 21:33Kearns: Did you notice the price of the cigarettes?
- 21:35Ryan: Yes.
- 21:36Kearns: God.
- 21:36What is that?
- 21:37Under a dollar
- 21:38Ryan: Yeah.
- 21:39Kearns: buck?
- 21:39Jon: 25
- 21:39Ryan: Yeah.
- 21:40Kearns: that's about right.
- 21:41They were buck 35 when I started smoking, which wasn't, which was later,
- 21:46Ryan: How
- 21:46Kearns: but not much.
- 21:47I buck 35.
- 21:49A gallon of gas was a buck 35 when I started driving a pack
- 21:51of cigarettes was a buck 35.
- 21:54Ryan: 8 99.
- 21:55Jon: I did a little bit
- 21:56Kearns: A time,
- 21:56Jon: little
- 21:57Kearns: a time in Virginia when I, for college, you could get generics 69 cents.
- 22:03Jon: pack.
- 22:04Kearns: Wow.
- 22:06Jon: Bro,
- 22:06Ryan: okay.
- 22:08Jon: this is bad for my lungs.
- 22:11Kearns: Uh, yeah.
- 22:11Ryan: For
- 22:12Kearns: Yeah.
- 22:13No limiting factor.
- 22:15No.
- 22:15Just as much as you can handle.
- 22:17Um, hot damn man.
- 22:19Ryan: That's a good deal
- 22:20Kearns: That's.
- 22:21Ryan: I quit, but that's a good deal.
- 22:24Jon: And
- 22:24Kearns: a paid phone next to the cigarette machine.
- 22:27That's pretty cool too.
- 22:28So you can just talk to mom the whole time.
- 22:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:30Kearns: I'm just gonna grab another pack of po mals.
- 22:32Well, like mall pulse.
- 22:36Ryan: Get those
- 22:37Kearns: Um,
- 22:37Ryan: right here for you.
- 22:39Kearns: yeah, that, that wasn't one of the nice parts about the eighties.
- 22:42The slice of pizza was like 50 cents and.
- 22:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:46Kearns: You could leave the house with a dollar and actually do something with it.
- 22:50Ryan: Yep.
- 22:50Kearns: Um, I don't wanna make, this is gonna take this
- 22:52episode to a negative place.
- 22:53We're not gonna go there.
- 22:55One of the cool things about the eighties the movie captures is how like
- 22:57ne it is and stuff and the camera work.
- 23:01Uh, the, the lighting in the film is dark.
- 23:03The film runs darker than I'd like it to, but that you can still see
- 23:06the eighties aesthetic, right?
- 23:08Ryan: Yeah, got
- 23:10Jon: Definitely.
- 23:10Ryan: got in the mall
- 23:11Kearns: Lasers.
- 23:13Even just the lasers.
- 23:13Yeah.
- 23:14There's nothing like a mall in the eighties.
- 23:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:16Kearns: Nothing like it did.
- 23:17Jon: Did,
- 23:18Kearns: Did you catch the name of the sporting
- 23:20Jon: goods store?
- 23:22Ryan: I, No, it
- 23:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 23:24Ryan: it wasn't Dick's.
- 23:26Kearns: Dick's.
- 23:26Ryan: God,
- 23:27Kearns: God,
- 23:27Ryan: trying to think.
- 23:28Kearns: I'm trying to think.
- 23:29You're gonna have to spoil it.
- 23:31You have to.
- 23:31Jon: I.
- 23:32Kearns: Peck can pause.
- 23:32Ryan: Yes.
- 23:33Kearns: Yes.
- 23:35Why would it be pecking?
- 23:36Pause the director.
- 23:39Ryan: Yeah,
- 23:40Kearns: Oh,
- 23:40Jon: they shoot 'em up, westerns and
- 23:42Kearns: that's cool.
- 23:43And.
- 23:44Jon: it's got that sporting goods store
- 23:47Kearns: Has a better arsenal than
- 23:49Jon: some
- 23:49Kearns: militant,
- 23:50I mean, was that a common thing?
- 23:53Because I, I remember, I know that there's none around this area, but that's
- 23:57'cause where we live, where we live.
- 23:59But I've been, I've been around the country.
- 24:01I've been to bass pro shops and stuff, and you see, you
- 24:03see rifles and stuff in there.
- 24:05But I've never been to like a sporting goods store where I was walking
- 24:09around, like golf clubs AR 15.
- 24:11Cool.
- 24:13Like that.
- 24:14And the movie showcases it.
- 24:15Not especially, not one attached to a mall, but 86 was 86.
- 24:20Yeah.
- 24:21Jon: Yeah.
- 24:21Kearns: Different time to
- 24:22Jon: to
- 24:23Kearns: one of my favorite lines
- 24:24Jon: in the movie,
- 24:25Kearns: in the movie too.
- 24:25Jon: Let's
- 24:26Kearns: go send those suckers a
- 24:27Jon: a
- 24:27Kearns: Rambo.
- 24:28Jon: Graham?
- 24:28Kearns: Yeah, it's from, that's some quality bad writing right there.
- 24:34Jon: Yeah.
- 24:35Kearns: That's good stuff.
- 24:36Jon: Rambo Graham,
- 24:38Ryan: It is the eighties.
- 24:39Kearns: See
- 24:39Ryan: it in the
- 24:40Kearns: you're filming in the whole
- 24:41Ryan: from
- 24:41Kearns: film
- 24:42Jon: huh?
- 24:42Kearns: from Commando and Rambo had just come out.
- 24:45Ryan: yeah.
- 24:46There was
- 24:46Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:46Ryan: lines about movies where I
- 24:48Kearns: movies where I was like, oh, I don't know if you noticed, this might be
- 24:53the most eighties part of this movie when they pass the movie theater in the mall.
- 24:58Do you notice what's playing?
- 25:00Ryan: I didn't even see it.
- 25:02Kearns: Oh.
- 25:04Jon: crush
- 25:05Kearns: Groove Crush.
- 25:07Groove
- 25:08Crush.
- 25:08Jon: Groove man.
- 25:09Like he
- 25:11Kearns: It was sort of like the, break in copycat.
- 25:14Ryan: Okay.
- 25:15Kearns: Never, I'd never heard a crush groove.
- 25:17It sounds eighties, that's for sure.
- 25:19The fact that there's a theater in the mall makes me happy too.
- 25:22And not many of those around anymore either.
- 25:24Shopping mall theaters.
- 25:26Ryan: Arcade.
- 25:27There was a, it was
- 25:28Kearns: Oh, that's the worst one.
- 25:29Our local one, not having the big arcade anymore kills me.
- 25:34Ryan: like
- 25:34Kearns: That one made me sad.
- 25:36Yeah.
- 25:37Ryan: Actual good
- 25:38Kearns: like pre DDR era when it was X-Men, um, Simpsons and all that stuff.
- 25:44Um, what was the major?
- 25:45Shoot something Crisis time Crisis was the shoot 'em up.
- 25:51There was really golden era days of arcades.
- 25:54A street fighter.
- 25:56Jon: great arcade.
- 25:57Kearns: Yeah.
- 25:59Jon: That was a,
- 26:00Kearns: Ip.
- 26:00I go back further.
- 26:01Jon: you guys and like Gauntlet and
- 26:04Kearns: Golden acts.
- 26:05Jon: and
- 26:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 26:06Jon: Gold Max,
- 26:07Kearns: are all,
- 26:08Ryan: that's
- 26:08Kearns: those are the ones that made, they paved the way for
- 26:10the ones I was talking about.
- 26:12That's a good point.
- 26:13Ryan: Yep.
- 26:14Kearns: Uh, what's the racing game?
- 26:15The original racing game, it was xenophobe.
- 26:17Jon: position.
- 26:19Xenophobe
- 26:20Kearns: was like, like an alien type of ripoff game.
- 26:24Nice.
- 26:24Good.
- 26:24Good.
- 26:25Name for a game.
- 26:26Great name for a podcast.
- 26:28Jon: I'm
- 26:29Kearns: Pretty sure that
- 26:29Jon: xenophobe.
- 26:31Kearns: Xenophobe.
- 26:33I mean, that's a good name.
- 26:33Xenophobia is a thing.
- 26:36Ryan: Yes, it
- 26:36Kearns: Where's Xenomania though?
- 26:38We're maniacs about our Xenos.
- 26:41We don't phobe away from 'em, we embrace 'em.
- 26:44so yeah, guys, that's, that's chopping mall.
- 26:47Um, go to the Mall of America and when you see the little robot, Marty
- 26:50come out and start scanning things, just know that it could definitely
- 26:53cut your throat at any moment.
- 26:56Jon: Yep.
- 26:57Kearns: And they,
- 26:58Jon: like, they thought of everything
- 26:59Kearns: with you
- 26:59Jon: robots
- 27:00Kearns: except one thing,
- 27:02Jon: four
- 27:03Kearns: drive.
- 27:03Oh, fair, fair.
- 27:05Ryan: They
- 27:06Kearns: What was the eighties?
- 27:07Jon: stuck in, that one gets stuck in paint and that's it.
- 27:11Ryan: And then it's a
- 27:11Kearns: And then it's a flare and
- 27:14Jon: Yep.
- 27:15Ryan: bye bye.
- 27:16Kearns: bye bye.
- 27:17Well, the thing about it too is I don't think there were a lot of cars
- 27:19that had four wheel drive in 1986.
- 27:22Ryan: Everything
- 27:22Kearns: Everything
- 27:23Ryan: for
- 27:23Kearns: wheel drive or rear wheel drive.
- 27:25Right.
- 27:25A lot of, a lot were rear back then, ev everything that was a sports car was rear.
- 27:30the front wheel was like.
- 27:32I think more sedan and stuff, right?
- 27:36'cause the you, but the front wheel, you were set 'cause you had
- 27:38the weight of the engine on it.
- 27:40Ryan: Okay.
- 27:40Kearns: That was the way it worked.
- 27:41You had traction, the uh, rear wheel, you were screwed.
- 27:44Ryan: God,
- 27:45Kearns: Robot screwed as well.
- 27:47Ryan: Oh, definitely
- 27:48Kearns: Definitely stuck
- 27:49Ryan: in that pain and
- 27:50Kearns: in that pain and center
- 27:51Ryan: And he's blown up,
- 27:53Kearns: blown up,
- 27:54Ryan: which,
- 27:56I,
- 27:57Kearns: I.
- 27:58Ryan: I really thought
- 27:59Kearns: I really thought Birdie was dead.
- 28:01Ryan: That was a lot of
- 28:02Kearns: That was a
- 28:03Jon: you?
- 28:03Kearns: lot of blood loss,
- 28:04Ryan: from his head.
- 28:06it just pours
- 28:07Kearns: it just poured out.
- 28:08Ryan: like, I'm, I'm
- 28:09Kearns: He's like,
- 28:09Ryan: It's like, are you a robot?
- 28:12Are you
- 28:12Jon: So
- 28:12Ryan: for.
- 28:15Kearns: one of the things that sort of bothered me is naming a character Furie
- 28:20Ryan: Hmm.
- 28:21Jon: and then
- 28:21Kearns: hearing a hundred percent at times people calling him Freddy.
- 28:26Ryan: Yep.
- 28:27Kearns: Oh,
- 28:28Ryan: What
- 28:29Kearns: what
- 28:29Ryan: talk
- 28:30Kearns: if you wanna talk about that?
- 28:31What about Leslie?
- 28:34In the beginning,
- 28:35Ryan: she, or when
- 28:35Kearns: she, or when she's trying to find Mike,
- 28:38Ryan: like, Mike, where
- 28:39Kearns: she's like, Mike, where are you?
- 28:40And then it's
- 28:41Ryan: Brandon.
- 28:41Kearns: Brandon.
- 28:42Ryan: where,
- 28:43Kearns: Brandon, where, where are you?
- 28:44She got the name wrong
- 28:45Ryan: And they put
- 28:46Jon: Uh.
- 28:47Kearns: put it still,
- 28:48Ryan: crazy.
- 28:48It's like
- 28:48Kearns: which is crazy.
- 28:49It's like brandeds.
- 28:50Ryan: Mike,
- 28:50Kearns: They couldn't afford more shoots.
- 28:52Like, ah, nobody will notice.
- 28:53It's fine.
- 28:54That's what I mean though.
- 28:54There's not many memorable characters in the movie, so
- 28:57nobody was gonna pick up on it,
- 28:59Jon: we can just roll along with that scene too.
- 29:01When she gets to where the cigarette machine is and his
- 29:03dead body is, if you look,
- 29:07Kearns: twitching his big toes to that whole speed while he
- 29:11Jon: dead.
- 29:11Kearns: Oh, great.
- 29:12He's just like flexing it like that.
- 29:14Jon: the whole time.
- 29:16Kearns: Why?
- 29:16Just to be a jerk.
- 29:19I don't,
- 29:20Jon: I,
- 29:20Kearns: I dunno.
- 29:22Oh man.
- 29:23Ryan: a
- 29:23Kearns: Definitely a Roger.
- 29:24Ryan: A Corman production.
- 29:26Overall, just the cheesiness, the campiness.
- 29:32Kearns: campiness.
- 29:33Mm-hmm.
- 29:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:34Kearns: It just is what it is.
- 29:35Like we were saying earlier, it's a good watch.
- 29:38If you like the robot movies in the eighties, definitely tune into it.
- 29:41Jon: Yeah,
- 29:42Kearns: think we got anything else on it, to be honest with you.
- 29:45Jon: it, it's a
- 29:46Kearns: It's a fun,
- 29:48Jon: under
- 29:48Kearns: an hour and a half
- 29:51Jon: Little
- 29:51Kearns: movie, there's,
- 29:52Jon: there's,
- 29:53Kearns: it's not gonna,
- 29:54Jon: it's
- 29:54Kearns: not something that's gonna stick with you forever, but it
- 29:57Jon: you.
- 29:57If, if
- 29:58Kearns: you.
- 29:59Jon: in
- 30:00Kearns: With the mindset that you're gonna have fun watching
- 30:02a movie, you're gonna have
- 30:03Jon: fun watching this
- 30:04Kearns: great B horror night flick kind of deal.
- 30:08Um, and yeah, may, you know, maybe watch it between short circuit one and two.
- 30:13Have a good time.
- 30:14Ryan: And it's
- 30:15Kearns: Have a good time with it.
- 30:16Jon: it's the short circuit prequel.
- 30:18Kearns: Ooh, well, short circuit one did have militarized
- 30:21evil robots being developed.
- 30:23That was the original purpose or like side purpose of them.
- 30:26So don't forget Johnny Five's.
- 30:29Brothers not good, bad.
- 30:30Jon: And
- 30:31Kearns: Listen, these robots
- 30:33Jon: have like one little goofy
- 30:35Kearns: great too.
- 30:36I don't know if you guys caught onto it, but like there's a bunch of times
- 30:39where they're just sort of like.
- 30:42Moving around a little chaotically
- 30:44Jon: with
- 30:44Kearns: their little robots.
- 30:45Yeah.
- 30:45Jon: like up in the
- 30:46Kearns: Flailing la la Like lost in space.
- 30:50Jon: yeah, it's pretty funny.
- 30:51Kearns: Yeah, that's good.
- 30:53Um, but yeah, that's, that's chopping mall then, then they kill Will Robinson.
- 31:00Um, I guess we're gonna roll in the top fives, guys.
- 31:03Ryan: So
- 31:04Kearns: you think about all that, Ryan?
- 31:05Ryan: I'm
- 31:05Jon: Let's do it.
- 31:06Ryan: Um, I went with killer Robots this
- 31:09Kearns: Killer robots this time.
- 31:11It's rock.
- 31:12Ryan: there's
- 31:12Kearns: That's a, that's a big twist.
- 31:13Like
- 31:14Ryan: I know, I, I
- 31:15Kearns: I know, I, I,
- 31:15Ryan: was like the most
- 31:16Kearns: that was like the most creative I can, I was trying to be funny.
- 31:19It came out mean I was trying to be funny.
- 31:20No, I like staying with the robots,
- 31:23Ryan: But, um,
- 31:24Kearns: but um,
- 31:25Ryan: for these
- 31:26Kearns: for these movies are on my list to watch.
- 31:29Yeah.
- 31:29Ryan: wanna
- 31:30Kearns: I do wanna see.
- 31:31Um, and I'm recommending because
- 31:33Ryan: they're fun
- 31:34Kearns: I think they're fun and they
- 31:35Ryan: we're
- 31:35Kearns: relate to what we're interested to.
- 31:37Ryan: And one I did see,
- 31:38Kearns: One I did.
- 31:39Ryan: so I'm gonna
- 31:40Kearns: So I'm gonna start off with five.
- 31:43Ryan: Christmas.
- 31:43Bloody
- 31:44Kearns: Christmas, bloody Christmas,
- 31:45Ryan: Christmas
- 31:46Jon: Yes.
- 31:47Kearns: four.
- 31:48Ryan: a
- 31:48Kearns: It follows the robotics.
- 31:50Jon: Yes.
- 31:50Kearns: Santa Claus
- 31:51Ryan: a
- 31:51Kearns: who goes on Spree on
- 31:54Ryan: released in December
- 31:55Kearns: a good one.
- 31:56Ryan: It's been on my
- 31:57Kearns: It's been on my list.
- 31:58I have to watch it.
- 32:00Ryan: Um, yes,
- 32:03Jon: If
- 32:03Kearns: I'm not mistaken, it's on our list for Christmas
- 32:06Jon: time.
- 32:06Kearns: time.
- 32:06Nice.
- 32:07Ryan: then I'll be watching
- 32:08Kearns: Then I'll be watching Jeremy Gardner.
- 32:10You'll be watching it this year.
- 32:11Oh, nice dude.
- 32:14Ryan: All
- 32:14Jon: And the
- 32:16Kearns: killer row at the Killer Robot at
- 32:18Jon: is
- 32:18Kearns: Abraham Ben Ruby.
- 32:20Mm.
- 32:20Ryan: he looks
- 32:21Kearns: Who you'll, that's awesome.
- 32:23Jon: Yeah, He's so good.
- 32:25That movie is so good.
- 32:27Kearns: Nice.
- 32:28Ryan: So I'm checking
- 32:30Kearns: So I'm checking that off the list this year.
- 32:32Ryan: this movie
- 32:32Kearns: But this movie number four
- 32:34Ryan: already seen
- 32:35Kearns: I've already seen already.
- 32:36Um, it's Megan.
- 32:38Ryan: I.
- 32:39Kearns: Oh
- 32:40Ryan: I, I do enjoy
- 32:41Kearns: I,
- 32:41Ryan: Um, I thought it was the
- 32:43Kearns: I thought it was
- 32:45Ryan: was refused to watch it.
- 32:46Kearns: watch.
- 32:47Ryan: different
- 32:47Kearns: a whole different type of
- 32:49Ryan: comedy,
- 32:50Kearns: horror, comedy, film, whatever, how you want to vibe with it.
- 32:53Ryan: and it's a pretty
- 32:54Kearns: a pretty creative process with creating AI and
- 32:58the dangers of ai, I would say.
- 33:00Ryan: adaptation
- 33:01Kearns: adaptation.
- 33:02Ryan: or adapting.
- 33:03Kearns: Yeah,
- 33:04Ryan: thought I was creating a new word there.
- 33:06I got scared there.
- 33:07Kearns: I got scared.
- 33:08No, you made it.
- 33:09We got through it together.
- 33:12Ryan: number, number three,
- 33:13Kearns: number three,
- 33:15Ryan: Westworld
- 33:16Kearns: Westworld.
- 33:171973 with, uh, U Brenner.
- 33:19That's the man in black.
- 33:20Good call.
- 33:21Good choice.
- 33:22Ryan: It's, I've seen clips.
- 33:23Um, caught it
- 33:26Kearns: I've always quoted from like the middle to the end,
- 33:28Ryan: it in
- 33:29Kearns: never seen it in full.
- 33:31Um,
- 33:31Ryan: it's
- 33:31Kearns: it's just, it's a good watch from what I've seen from the middle to end.
- 33:36Ryan: Uh, I don't know how
- 33:37Kearns: Uh, I don't know how it starts, but I presume they get
- 33:39there and all hell breaks through.
- 33:41Ryan: That's the only part I
- 33:41Kearns: That's the only part I always miss.
- 33:43Okay.
- 33:45I don't wanna ruin it.
- 33:46You don't wanna ruin any minute of that film.
- 33:48You don't wanna ruin any minute of the uh, series either for that matter.
- 33:52'cause there's the 18 twists in the series.
- 33:54But yeah.
- 33:55Cool.
- 33:56Ryan: Well, I hope
- 33:57Kearns: Very cool.
- 33:57Ryan: two.
- 33:58'cause number two is it's been a while I
- 34:01Kearns: It's been a while.
- 34:02I have watch it.
- 34:03Um,
- 34:04Ryan: 2018.
- 34:05Kearns: great.
- 34:06Okay.
- 34:07Ryan: I know I'm going
- 34:08Kearns: I know I'm going everywhere with sci-fi more, but I feel like
- 34:11it's a good pretty mix and upgrade.
- 34:12Ryan: the whole
- 34:13Kearns: With the whole implant and a chip that allows us to
- 34:16control his whole body after
- 34:17Ryan: paralyzed.
- 34:18Kearns: being paralyzed.
- 34:19It's an interesting concept and it's
- 34:21Ryan: 'cause it
- 34:22Kearns: scary because it can go orry.
- 34:24Ryan: I'm kind of in the
- 34:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:25I'm kind of in the dark with this one and I have been,
- 34:27Ryan: I'm proud
- 34:28Kearns: and I'm proud because it intrigues me, the concept
- 34:31Ryan: and I
- 34:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:32Kearns: and I
- 34:32Ryan: wanna be spoiled
- 34:33Kearns: don't wanna be spoiled by it.
- 34:35Jon: It's
- 34:35Kearns: not bad.
- 34:37Ryan: Okay.
- 34:38Jon: it's, it's fine.
- 34:40Ryan: Okay.
- 34:41I mean, I love the actor
- 34:42Kearns: It's a glowing endorsement.
- 34:44Ryan: This
- 34:45Kearns: All right.
- 34:46It's fine.
- 34:48Jon: It
- 34:48Kearns: All right.
- 34:49All right.
- 34:50What's number one R guy?
- 34:54Oh, okay.
- 34:55Did he, did he have to say it like that?
- 34:57I think you gave the listeners cancer.
- 34:59Oh,
- 35:00Ryan: Macina.
- 35:01Mcna,
- 35:02Kearns: XM now man,
- 35:03Ryan: ah
- 35:04Kearns: xm, now
- 35:05Ryan: go.
- 35:05Jon: Text Macina.
- 35:06Ryan: X
- 35:06Kearns: he's messing with you guys.
- 35:07Just so you know.
- 35:09Just so you know, the original intended name for that movie was X McKinna.
- 35:13Just so you guys, it's Lafe Nikita,
- 35:16Ryan: Nikita.
- 35:17But, um,
- 35:18Kearns: but um.
- 35:19Ryan: a film I've actually afforded.
- 35:21Not in a bad
- 35:22Kearns: Not in a bad way, but like, I haven't seen it, so I've avoided spoilers.
- 35:26Ryan: I've
- 35:26Kearns: Oh good.
- 35:27I will be quiet.
- 35:27Then
- 35:28Ryan: I've always caught it, again,
- 35:30Kearns: again,
- 35:30Ryan: pieces
- 35:31Kearns: pieces,
- 35:32Ryan: watch
- 35:32Kearns: you can't watch it at different pieces.
- 35:34You have to watch it thing.
- 35:36Mm-hmm.
- 35:36Ryan: it's
- 35:37Kearns: And it's been the luck of the draw of,
- 35:39Ryan: on Netflix
- 35:40Kearns: on Netflix and then it's removed when I wanna watch it
- 35:43Ryan: anywhere
- 35:44Kearns: or anywhere I try.
- 35:45So,
- 35:46Ryan: this is the year I'm gonna try to
- 35:47Kearns: see, I'm gonna try to watch it, but it, uh, follows a programmer.
- 35:50Ryan: Who was invited by a
- 35:51Kearns: Who was invited by a CEO to administer the, uh, during
- 35:54test to an intelligent Good watch.
- 35:57Enjoy it.
- 35:58Ryan: Yes,
- 35:59Kearns: It's one of those watches where I'm kind of envious of you 'cause you
- 36:01get to watch it for the first time.
- 36:04Ryan: I know
- 36:04Kearns: It's a good movie.
- 36:05Ryan: Jada was very shocked.
- 36:06I never seen it.
- 36:07She's like, you've never seen that yet?
- 36:08And I was like, it's on the
- 36:09Kearns: Like
- 36:10Ryan: I haven't had the chance
- 36:11Kearns: I haven't had the chance yet.
- 36:12Ryan: watch
- 36:12Kearns: name Fiander.
- 36:14Different.
- 36:15Yeah,
- 36:18you'll enjoy it.
- 36:19Ryan: but yeah, no Alicia
- 36:20Kearns: yeah, no, at least
- 36:21Ryan: it.
- 36:21Kearns: benders in it.
- 36:22Um, Oscar Ice.
- 36:23Oh, you mean Magneto's wife Fast bender, slow Bender vi ender.
- 36:31Yeah.
- 36:32She crushes it.
- 36:34She is a phenomenal actor.
- 36:36people always get after Pretty Girls.
- 36:40With rolls and stuff like that, and she should put all that to bed.
- 36:44She, she carries that movie.
- 36:47It's a very good job
- 36:49Ryan: From the trailers.
- 36:50Kearns: the trailer,
- 36:51Ryan: the main purpose,
- 36:52Kearns: the main purpose, right?
- 36:53She's like the main focus.
- 36:54Yeah, she's the robot, but it's the, it's the performance that makes it believable.
- 37:00Ryan: yeah.
- 37:00Kearns: she's not, she's a robot with sentience.
- 37:02So there has to be something there that's a gray area.
- 37:06You know what I mean?
- 37:07You can't be a robot and a hu or a human.
- 37:09You have to be an amalgamation of both.
- 37:12Plus, she has to play a part.
- 37:15With the other humans in the movie and the other robots, she has to play differently
- 37:20in different situations and she just does.
- 37:22She is the reason the movie works.
- 37:25It's a brilliantly written movie that would not have stood at all without the
- 37:28right actress and they, I think they tried to cast Anna Day Armas in it.
- 37:31I might be wrong about that, and I don't know if she would've done it.
- 37:35She's good too, and she's been in great movies and done great jobs, but
- 37:38I don't think she could have done this.
- 37:40Based on her other, like her work is Joy and Blade Runner and stuff.
- 37:43I'm not sure she could have hacked it.
- 37:44What do you think, John?
- 37:46Jon: Yeah, I don't think so.
- 37:47Kearns: I could be wrong about her being cast though, but I feel like I read
- 37:50that somewhere back when I read things
- 37:53Ryan: You still read.
- 37:55Got it
- 37:56Kearns: sometimes.
- 37:58Yeah, I got about, I got about five of these I gotta get into soon.
- 38:02But anyway, let's say going into John's so I can start them.
- 38:07Jon: All right.
- 38:08Speaking of phenomenal actors,
- 38:12Kearns: Oh, look at that.
- 38:13Jon: five Dick Miller movies,
- 38:16Ryan: Yes.
- 38:18Kearns: I hope his Google searches go up a lot after this episode drops.
- 38:23Jon: I hope everything about him goes up after this.
- 38:26He was amazing.
- 38:28Ryan: He, he, he's, he's passed away.
- 38:29Don't worry.
- 38:31Kearns: Oh, well, rigor mortis setting in.
- 38:34Get after a Dick
- 38:36Jon: So sort of have this list a little different 'cause I want
- 38:40to, you know, give a little bit of
- 38:44Kearns: Dick Miller story
- 38:45Jon: instead of
- 38:46Kearns: just describing movies.
- 38:47What are we even doing here?
- 38:49Jon: is
- 38:49Kearns: five pretty
- 38:50Jon: movies.
- 38:51So.
- 38:51Kearns: Okay.
- 38:53Dick Miller 242 Acting.
- 38:56Ryan: Yep.
- 38:56Jon: in
- 38:57Kearns: Yep.
- 38:57Jon: kinds of stuff.
- 39:00TV
- 39:00Kearns: shows action
- 39:01Jon: horror.
- 39:03Um, some of
- 39:04Kearns: His non horror, he was in term,
- 39:07Jon: he
- 39:07Kearns: was in interface.
- 39:09Jon: The burbs,
- 39:10Kearns: I would argue, by the way, the original Terminator was closer
- 39:14to horror than it was action.
- 39:16I would make that argument for the original.
- 39:19Jon: I thought about making that argument and putting
- 39:21Terminator on my list, but I have
- 39:24Kearns: Yeah,
- 39:24Jon: that
- 39:25Kearns: I'm sure there are plenty.
- 39:26Yeah.
- 39:26Ryan: I was contemplating, put Terminator on my
- 39:28Kearns: Terminator on my list and I was like more sci-fi for it for some reason.
- 39:32But it's for, I mean, no, it is definitely sci-fi, but it's, it's a scary movie.
- 39:36It's a, it's a walk down.
- 39:38I'll, uh, Halloween and Friday the 13th, but I'm gonna shut
- 39:41up now so we can get into it.
- 39:41I wanna hear the list.
- 39:43Jon: So did Dick Miller Navy Vet. Uh,
- 39:47Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 39:48Jon: PhD
- 39:49Kearns: Uhhuh.
- 39:49Jon: writer, He
- 39:52Kearns: worked as a psychologist at Bellview.
- 39:55Wow.
- 39:56Ryan: That's.
- 39:57Kearns: Wow.
- 39:58Explains the PhD.
- 40:00Jon: while
- 40:00Kearns: He was acting on Broadway.
- 40:02He's a psychologist in
- 40:03Jon: in
- 40:03Kearns: the day, during the day.
- 40:05Jon: on Broadway at
- 40:05Kearns: Did he have kids too?
- 40:07'cause this doesn't jive.
- 40:08How?
- 40:08Where are the minutes in the day coming from to do all this?
- 40:13Jon: it, it's a different time.
- 40:14It's the fifties.
- 40:15The, the
- 40:16Kearns: Um,
- 40:17Jon: kids.
- 40:17Kearns: that's true.
- 40:18I mean, we're not condoning that, by the way, we're not condoning it.
- 40:21We're just explaining that it was a circumstance.
- 40:23Jon: Yeah.
- 40:24Kearns: And that allowed for Dick Miller to live the best life
- 40:26he could have possibly lived,
- 40:28Jon: I, I,
- 40:29Kearns: but his poor wife suffered immeasurably.
- 40:32Jon: Oh, absolutely.
- 40:34Absolutely.
- 40:35But they, they stayed together.
- 40:36I
- 40:37Kearns: Oh, I'm sure she was fine with it.
- 40:38Jon: when he died.
- 40:39Kearns: She was.
- 40:40She was wealthy.
- 40:41I mean, he was bringing in some money.
- 40:43Yeah,
- 40:43Jon: Yeah.
- 40:44Kearns: I'm sure she was happy.
- 40:45Jon: if you, if you want to go more into Dick Miller on your own,
- 40:48Kearns: I mean, I, I was hoping Dick Miller would get more into me.
- 40:53You know what I mean?
- 40:53The innuendo, you haven't even picked up on 10 of 'em.
- 40:56There's been a lot of them tonight.
- 40:57They get the wink.
- 40:58Uh, I will never recover from that.
- 41:00Wink, John.
- 41:02Yeah, there it is.
- 41:05Jon: Um,
- 41:06Kearns: There's.
- 41:07Jon: a documentary called That Guy Dick Miller.
- 41:10Uh, I cannot recommend that highly enough.
- 41:13Kearns: not part of the list though.
- 41:14It's just a wreck.
- 41:15Jon: No,
- 41:15Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:16Jon: just, that's just a, a, a recommendation.
- 41:19So into the list.
- 41:21Number five, tales
- 41:23Kearns: From the,
- 41:24Jon: Demon Night
- 41:25Kearns: okay.
- 41:26Yeah,
- 41:26Jon: as
- 41:27Kearns: uncle Will.
- 41:28Uncle Willie.
- 41:29Ryan: Played
- 41:29Kearns: I'm
- 41:30Jon: Uncle
- 41:30Kearns: Dick Miller.
- 41:32Is it rude to look it up now?
- 41:34Jon: Willie and Dick.
- 41:35number
- 41:36Kearns: four.
- 41:37While you're looking that up.
- 41:38Oh yeah.
- 41:38There he is.
- 41:40Ryan: Yep.
- 41:41Kearns: Is this the second time piranha's Come on the list.
- 41:44Jon: Oh yeah.
- 41:44Piranha.
- 41:45Kearns: Yep.
- 41:46I think Brian put Piha on
- 41:48Ryan: yep.
- 41:49Kearns: weeks ago.
- 41:49Yep.
- 41:50Ryan: I did.
- 41:50Kearns: Got it.
- 41:51Dick Miller.
- 41:52Jon: So Dick Miller
- 41:54Kearns: Dick Miller is.
- 41:55Jon: Piranha is the greedy developer.
- 41:58Kearns: Okay.
- 41:59Yep.
- 42:00That's cool.
- 42:02He looks like he's the dude from Gremlins too.
- 42:05Is that him?
- 42:06Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 42:07Kearns: my first connection?
- 42:08Yeah.
- 42:08We'll get there.
- 42:08We'll get there.
- 42:09Jon: get there.
- 42:11Kearns: Anyw who?
- 42:13Jon: my number three is the howling.
- 42:15Kearns: Nice choice.
- 42:17I remember him in that too, actually, now that you mention it.
- 42:19Jon: Walter Paisley.
- 42:21And so this, here's a a Dick Miller curiosity.
- 42:25Kearns: Dick Miller played a character named
- 42:27Jon: Paisley at least
- 42:29Kearns: five different.
- 42:31Ryan: Is it the
- 42:31Kearns: That's amazing.
- 42:34Ryan: connection?
- 42:35Kearns: they got outta paying him.
- 42:36Sag was like holding up his insurance 'cause they said it was the same part.
- 42:42Jon: The janitor and chopping mall is Walter.
- 42:45Ryan: Yep.
- 42:46Kearns: That's cool.
- 42:48Jon: he's Walt in Night of the Creeps.
- 42:51Uh, it
- 42:52Kearns: It goes back, apparently.
- 42:53The first one was Buckets of Blood, which is another Roger Corman movie.
- 42:58Mm-hmm.
- 42:59Jon: but
- 43:00Kearns: There's at least five times he plays a character named Walter Paisley
- 43:03Jon: and
- 43:03Kearns: they don't seem to be,
- 43:05Jon: same
- 43:05Kearns: well, his death, Walter, the janitor's death is one of the most
- 43:09spectacularly bad instances of CGI in this movie, but it's, it's when it goes Right.
- 43:14It's, it's so bad.
- 43:15It's good.
- 43:16Jon: Yeah.
- 43:17Kearns: Yeah.
- 43:18so my number two,
- 43:19Jon: Dick
- 43:20Kearns: Miller movie is Knight of the Creek.
- 43:23Okay.
- 43:24Where he's also Walt,
- 43:26Ryan: Yeah.
- 43:27Yeah.
- 43:27Kearns: another Walt.
- 43:28There must have been a brother or cousin or somebody that he was honoring.
- 43:31Maybe it was the guy, a guy that he lost in the, in the service.
- 43:35Jon: Maybe
- 43:35Kearns: was like, you're gonna be in every movie.
- 43:36I remember.
- 43:37I'm gonna be in Walt.
- 43:38I'm taking you with me, Walt.
- 43:42Jon: And number one, gremlins And
- 43:45Kearns: Gremlins too.
- 43:46Jon: as Mr. Terin.
- 43:47Kearns: He, he's holds it up in gremlins too as well.
- 43:50By the way, Gremlin's one legitimately scary movie.
- 43:52Like dark, scary movie.
- 43:54Well, for a kid, for a kid that, I think I mentioned it on another episode, but
- 43:59the pool scene when they're, that scene in the pool freaks me out to this day.
- 44:04It's like, no, don't get them wet.
- 44:07No.
- 44:08Jon: I, I saw that in theaters on its initial run.
- 44:14It had,
- 44:15Kearns: It had trading cards.
- 44:17Oh, sweet.
- 44:18Jon: I had all the trading cards.
- 44:20I loved gremlins.
- 44:21Kearns: was cool.
- 44:23Jon: but.
- 44:23Ryan: is a good
- 44:24Kearns: Gremlins you could watch.
- 44:25Yeah, man.
- 44:27On release.
- 44:27They had a ton.
- 44:28Didn't they have like a McDonald's craze too?
- 44:30Like didn't Mickey Ds promote the hell outta gremlins?
- 44:34You get all the cups.
- 44:36Ryan: oh.
- 44:37Jon: Grem Gremlins was huge.
- 44:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:40Made Dick Miller some cash.
- 44:43Ryan: Well, do
- 44:43Jon: They made all of 'em some cash.
- 44:46Ryan: don't you think he dies in the
- 44:47Jon: People
- 44:47Kearns: Guys The first film though.
- 44:49Ryan: 'cause he
- 44:50Kearns: Yeah,
- 44:50Jon: Oh yeah.
- 44:51You definitely think he's dead in the
- 44:52Kearns: the first one.
- 44:53Yeah.
- 44:54It's, it's implied.
- 44:55And then he's, that's like one of the feel good moments is when he realized he's not,
- 44:58Ryan: It comes
- 44:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:59Ryan: one.
- 45:00All right.
- 45:01Kearns: that's one of the, it's one of the music is blaring and he's like,
- 45:04isn't it like in the loader or something?
- 45:06Ryan: yeah.
- 45:07Kearns: like trying to run 'em over.
- 45:08Ryan: There's gremlins in the tractor.
- 45:10Kearns: There's the tractor.
- 45:11Yeah.
- 45:11The loader, whatever it is.
- 45:13Yeah.
- 45:13That's a scene.
- 45:15That's another movie that's super dark.
- 45:18Uh, is that a Christmas movie?
- 45:19If Die Hard's?
- 45:20A Christmas movie is Gremlins.
- 45:21Yes.
- 45:22Absolute
- 45:22Jon: is absolutely a Christmas movie.
- 45:24Kearns: Hell yes.
- 45:25Jon: Gizmos
- 45:26Kearns: a Christmas.
- 45:26Jon: gift.
- 45:27Kearns: Oh, fair enough.
- 45:28It's a Christmas movie.
- 45:29Indeed.
- 45:31Ryan: diehard, um, get, uh, gremlins, uh, Batman returns.
- 45:35There's a lot of films that are having that like
- 45:38Kearns: Having that like Christmas theme
- 45:40Ryan: Are considered a Christmas
- 45:41Kearns: are considered a Christmas film now.
- 45:42Ryan: mean even
- 45:43Jon: Die Heard too is a Christmas movie also.
- 45:46Ryan: it is Black
- 45:46Kearns: Yes.
- 45:47It's Black Christmas.
- 45:50Black Christmas is black.
- 45:51Christmas though.
- 45:53Ryan: Exactly.
- 45:54Kearns: Super.
- 45:55Jon: There's,
- 45:56Kearns: There's only one Black.
- 45:58Black.
- 45:59Jon: though
- 46:00Kearns: Which one?
- 46:01Jon: the original,
- 46:02Kearns: Oh, got it.
- 46:04Jon: there's two remakes they,
- 46:07Kearns: The first remake is
- 46:09Jon: generic.
- 46:10Kearns: The most recent re
- 46:11Jon: is.
- 46:12Ryan: Trash.
- 46:13Kearns: trash.
- 46:14Ryan: say
- 46:14Jon: I
- 46:14Kearns: understand what they're trying to do.
- 46:16Mm. It's like a,
- 46:18Jon: you
- 46:18Kearns: know, home
- 46:19Jon: too parable and whatever, but it's not good.
- 46:24Kearns: But if you're trying to chew horn that into something
- 46:26that's already something else, that's the thing that has its place.
- 46:29And there's ways you can do that correctly.
- 46:31Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 46:32Kearns: But if you can't, you can't.
- 46:34Put a, an agenda, I refuse to use the word because it's being weaponized
- 46:38right now, so I'm not gonna use the word, but it's, you can't put another
- 46:41agenda into a movie that wasn't built for it, that doesn't fit the vessel.
- 46:44That's all I'm gonna say.
- 46:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:46Kearns: gotta be made with intention for it to work.
- 46:49Um, but that's a, that's a crappy low note to leave the episode on.
- 46:53So somebody say something funny.
- 46:55Ryan: Um,
- 46:55Jon: Dick
- 46:56Kearns: Um.
- 46:58Dick
- 46:58Ryan: Miller as
- 46:59Kearns: Miller.
- 47:00As Willie.
- 47:01As Willie Miller.
- 47:02As Willie Dick,
- 47:04Jon: Uncle Willie.
- 47:05Ryan: Uncle
- 47:05Kearns: uncle Dick.
- 47:08Alright, well that was our episode on Chopping Ball everybody.
- 47:13We're gonna see you later.
- 47:13All right,
- 47:14Ryan: Have a good one,
- 47:15Kearns: have a good one, guys.
- 47:16See ya.
