the Week picture now posted as always Dave Allen Radio on Facebook and The Dave
3:39
Allen Show on ex Hannah, good Morning, Welcome to the show. How
3:43
are you, good morning, I'm good. How are you? I'm fine,
3:46
And I understand that we have a little audience there in the background.
3:49
It's right on, que one of your dogs started barking right now. Which
3:53
one is that that is a little, a little bit overweight dog. Her
4:00
name's Tricksy, little overweight Tricksy, got it? Got it. Atlas is
4:06
the name of our pet this week. Get the pictures, I said,
4:10
posted on my social media as always, tell us about Atlas. All right,
4:15
Well, Atlas he's a very very sweet boy. He's around nine months
4:20
old and he is a male. He is not neutered yet, but he
4:26
will be. We've gone to get him on the schedule for it. He
4:30
shows to be kid friendly. And the reason why I say shows or seems
4:33
to be or something like that each time I say that each week is because
4:38
it doesn't always mean that they that we know one hundred percent sure but they
4:42
are kids friendly. It just means that we have noticed while they have been
4:46
with us, when people have been visiting, or kids have been walking by
4:49
or something that they do show to be like just fine with the kids,
4:54
or maybe that they are just passing by and it seems like they have no
4:58
reaction towards them or anything like that, and we always always always advout caution
5:02
and supervision and everything like that whenever you are taking an animal home with kids,
5:09
but he does seem to be kid friendly. He is really good with
5:14
other dogs in our care as well. When we've had him out in play
5:16
groups. He is very loose and wiggly and playful with all the other dogs.
5:21
He seems to be pretty submissive to other dogs as well, so he
5:27
isn't really the alpha. I would say he likes to play. If another
5:31
dog corrects him, he seems to do well with that. He doesn't really
5:35
he doesn't not listen. He's a very good listener with other dogs. He
5:41
is a foster candidate, so if anybody wanted to foster him, to adopt
5:45
him, or if they just wanted to foster him for a couple of days
5:47
and give him a chance outside of the shelter life, then that would be
5:53
amazing and I'm sure he would absolutely love that. He does pull a little
5:57
bit on the leash, so of course, he is nine months, so
6:00
he's still technically a younger adult, a younger puppy if you will. He
6:04
is under a year. Still so he definitely could use a little bit of
6:09
training with that, but other than that, he is an all around good
6:13
dog. I actually had him out in the playyard I think it was last
6:16
week, and was taking some pictures of In that picture that I think you
6:21
was actually taken by one of our one of my coworkers with her camera.
6:25
We sometimes will go out there and take pictures of them to kind of help
6:29
with their profiles and people to see them a little bit clearer, a little
6:31
bit better. But he is looking for a forever home, and he is
6:36
absolutely adorable and very very sweet. He is a little bit shy at first
6:41
with you going like over his head and stuff like that, so you always
6:45
want to just be patient with them and let them come to you and stuff
6:47
like that. But he's very very sweet once he warms up to you.
6:50
But Dave Alan Chow and five Anue and Line brought to you apart by fresh

7:09

7:13
word foster there. I understand now you have a desperate need for fosters and
7:17
adopters because you got a lot of animals there at the shelter. Hannah.
7:21
Yes, I believe yesterday we had. I'm pretty sure it's a little bit
7:27
more today, but we had three hundred and twenty animals in our care now.
7:30
That includes the ones that are at the shelter as well as the ones
7:33
that are in foster homes, because we do still provide care for those ones.
7:36
We still give out food to them, blankets, beds, treats,
7:41
toys, anything like that. We still provide care for all of those out
7:44
in foster care. The foster parents, if you will, they usually don't
7:47
have to do anything like buying anything like that unless they wish to do so
7:51
themselves. But yes, three hundred and twenty I believe is what we had
7:56
yesterday. I believe we have a little bit more today. And of course,
8:01
with the adoptions that we've been having, we have not been having much
8:03
luck. No matter how many adoptions that we have been doing, it still
8:07
seems that we are just kind of replacing those animals that are going out and
8:13
then some Why do you think that is? I mean? Is I mean
8:16
because there's a you know, there's an entire the whole mindset that goes into
8:20
adopting an animal from the shelter, and maybe certain sometimes maybe people hand to
8:26
come in with maybe too high of expectations and they don't realize what a stressful
8:30
situation it is going well, first of all being in the shelter to begin
8:33
with, and then going to a home and maybe you know, it takes
8:37
time to get acclimated. And do you think sometimes that that uh, and
8:41
look, we've all been there, including myself, do you think that sometimes
8:45
maybe the people that do the adoptions that maybe they they just come in with
8:50
unreal expectations on the on the pets. Sometimes I think it could be a
8:54
factor of that as well. As I also know that it is currently kitten
9:00
season, so we do have a lot of kittens coming in, cats coming
9:03
in, pregnant moms coming in. We also have a lot of puppies coming
9:07
in. It feels like it's puppy season as well, so our puppy room
9:11
stays pretty full. But yeah, I would say that, you know,
9:16
coming in. I think everybody should be pretty open minded when they come in.
9:20
I mean, have your set expectations of course, you know, you
9:22
know, your lifestyle and things like that. But I always, always always
9:26
recommend to anyone and everyone to foster before you are of adopting, because that
9:33
kind of lets you see like a trial and error basically of how they're going
9:37
to be. Because yes, we can tell you what we know about them
9:39
while they've been in the shelter, but their house life could be completely different
9:43
than the shelter life. We've got them on a routine and we know what
9:48
they like, we know what they don't like. But in a home with
9:50
other animals that they haven't seen before, with cats, with kids, with
9:54
anything like that, it's it's stressful to them. First of all, it
9:58
takes at least three weeks for them to kind of get out of their shell
10:01
a little bit. So I definitely think you know, being patient with the
10:05
animals, taking your time, not coming in and just adopting one. Just
10:09
to adopt one. As a good audio and read the descriptions. I mean,
10:11
you guys do a great job on the descriptions. This dog is cat
10:16
friendly, This dog is not cat friendly. This one tends to, you
10:20
know, like to be an escape artist. You guys are very honest in
10:22
your descriptions. You know, this dog is going to need a place to
10:26
run. This is not your your lap dog. This this dog is full
10:28
of energy. This dog has shown and it's probably not good with other dogs.
10:33
This dog's great with other dog. I mean, you guys do a
10:35
great job with the descriptions. To do your homework, you know, as
10:37
you said, Hannah, just just don't go in and say, well,
10:39
I want to go get a dog or I want to get a cat.
10:41
Read the descriptions and get one that the best. The best suit's not necessarily
10:46
your personality, but your lifestyle. You know, if you're somebody that's gone
10:50
all day and you don't have time to take care of that pet, well
10:52
you may not want to get that particular one, you know, And and
10:56
for God's sakes, don't keep them chained up. And that's another story for
11:00
another time. Got a text? Actually have two texts here for you,
11:01
Hannah. One says, is the shelter still the need of another humane officer?
11:07
And if so, besides being an animal lover, what are the position
11:11
requirements? Thank you? Now I know you're not in the HR department up
11:13
there, but can you give us any insight on that? Well, you
11:18
definitely got to be an animal lover, that's for sure. You definitely gotta
11:20
have patience. But the humane officer position, I'm not one hundred percent sure
11:26
if they've feeled it yet or not. I haven't heard any updates on that.
11:28
I know that they were hiring, they were doing interviews. I think
11:31
they did some open interviews, so I think that if they have not picked
11:35
one yet, that they are going through and filtering all those out. If
11:41
you haven't had an interview, or if you are interested in the scision,
11:43
what I recommend doing is coming up to the shelter and feeling out on application
11:50
or we also have a spot on our website where you can join our team
11:54
and you can fill out an application on there and then you can call and
11:58
follow us on it, and that way we can It's just to the correct
12:00
person, because I don't want to give you any wrong information. Okay,
12:03
somebody else, UH answer my question? I said, why why have have
12:07
there been issues with the success rate? And somebody said, many people refuse
12:09
to take care of their animals and get them fixed. Uh, And Uh,
12:13
it is kitten season now, says a texture. Another one says,
12:16
can I suggest if you plan to specifically adopt a kitten, please adopt them
12:20
by the twos Like people, They're afraid, lonely and suffer oppression, says
12:24
a texture. You guys out and about anywhere this weekend, Hannah getting events.
12:30
We are going to the I believe it is the Candle's Creek Summer Fest.
12:35
I believe it is going on tomorrow, so definitely come out to that.
12:41
I think we'll be there at twelve. I'll have to double check and
12:45
let you know on that, but the information to be available on your on
12:46
the on your Facebook page. I'm sure so well. I mean, because
12:50
I know this time of year you guys are out and you stay really really
12:52
busy. Hannah. It's always a pleasure to talk to you, and we
12:56
will talk soon. Thanks a lot, all right, Thank you gardener again.

13:03
Let's review. Atlas is our dog this week. Rian. He's a nine
13:07
month old male, micro chip vaccinated, not fixed yet, but will be
13:11
came in as a stray. Loves other playful dogs. Seems to be kid
13:16
friendly. He's around twenty six pounds right now, probably won't get a heck
13:20
of a lot bigger, maybe up to around forty pounds or so. And
13:22
again he is nine months old, so he's still a younger dog. He
13:24
does pull slightly in the leash, but that certainly can be corrected with the
13:28
right beautiful dog. I've got his picture posted on Dave Allen Radio on Facebook

17:21
still can't there? It is all right? Good morning now we can hear
17:25
me now when I'm talked about this band it's doing Live on the Levee night
17:26
Black Joe Louis and the Honey Bears. You just kind of popped up here.
17:30
I know, what can you tell me about it? We were excited
17:33
about this one when we were looking at booking Live on the Levee this year.
17:36
We were excited about them. Lots of good like soul, funk,
17:40
like very danceable music. So I think it'll be a good time tonight.
17:45
And so you said it's just good time party music basically, right, I
17:48
think so. Yeah. And the Spurgey Hankins band, Yeah, they're local.
17:52
Spurgey You would never know it. Spurgee is seventy four years old.
17:55
Wow, and still rocking. I mean he is still everywhere. Actually was
18:00
with somebody in his band yesterday and they're they're working on new music right now.
18:03
Actually, So and Weather it's going to be fantastic. Yes again,
18:08
thankfully I did it. I was talking to a Straw and we were texting
18:11
back and forth yesterday and he was telling me what a great night it was
18:15
last last week for Live on the Levee. I don't know that I've ever
18:18
seen the leves packed as I did last week. It was I don't know
18:22
if they had the exactly obviously you can't have the exact number, but he
18:26
said it may have been one of the best nights in the history of the
18:27
Levite. I would agree with that. I mean, everywhere you looked,
18:30
there wasn't even a place to stand. I mean, was such a part
18:34
of it is if it's not too hot, then it's not too cold and
18:38
raining, storyy and whatever, then you know the people will come out.
18:41
Yeah, and I mean even on the river. I mean we counted ninety
18:45
some boats out on the river right behind us. Couldn't find even standing room.
18:49
In front of us. The boulevard was packed even so, I mean
18:52
it was a huge night our good friends at the Trojan Landing Marine. I
18:56
had to I had Heather on from the show earlier talking about their new food
19:03
truck they've got set up down there, and I hear it awesome. I
19:06
hear it's it's pretty good. Yes, I've heard that too. I've heard
19:07
it is awesome, and go check that out. So you're going to talk
19:11
about festival, I am, yes, absolutely, talk to me. Yeah,
19:15
So festival officially kicks off June fourteenth and goes ten days through the twenty
19:19
third. We have about ninety events that are going to be happening over the
19:23
course of ten days all over at Charleston, so South Hill's, West Side,
19:26
downtown, everywhere. You'll be able to find things to do. But
19:30
we actually have some events tomorrow as well. We are partnering on Foam at
19:37
the Dome that's going to be going on in front of the Capitol Complex starting
19:40
at three o'clock tomorrow, and then our dance Gala Dance Festival is tomorrow night
19:45
at seven thirty at the Culture Center, So you can like walk right over,
19:48
okay, And so what will you be doing in because I'll be at
19:52
foone with the dough Domar. I'm going to be down there with with our
19:53
sister Station ninety eight seven of the Mouth wonderful class of Dark mister Animal and
19:57
get to I get to take care of Steve Animal a fone with the dome.
20:00
What could possibly lose them? Okay? Possibly go right right, don't
20:03
lose them. I'm going to be hanging out with Animal down there tomorrow.
20:07
But what are you going to be doing there? We're going to have a
20:07
tent set up down there. We're gonna have festival schedules and things so you
20:11
can find out all the information about everything going on for Fest of All again
20:15
June fourteenth through the twenty third, and I guess, being a second pair
20:18
of odds to make sure animal doesn't get lost, I guess well, I
20:21
think I think pretty much all of our stations is going to be down at
20:22
one point or another through out there. Any crash is going to be there,
20:25
and several others from yeah, ninety six one KWS and B one hundred
20:29
I think is going to be there. I think pretty much all of this
20:30
is got to be there at at some point or another. So so Fest
20:33
of All I mean officially kicks off. Officially kicks off the fourteenth and yeah,
20:37
and so we have ten days. Truly, there's something for everyone.
20:41
We really focus on music theater, aren't in dance, but we've expanded that
20:45
throughout the years to include the literary arts, culinary arts. We'll have different
20:51
things going on and including you know a lot of collaborations, a lot of
20:55
partnerships, because that's what festival is really all about. And you know,
20:57
one of the things about Fest of All is and so many great events go
21:00
on in Charleston, you know from Regatta and you know all these other things,
21:03
but it's one of the rare events that really takes up the entire city
21:08
because there's not an area of the city that I could see and look in
21:12
at your information that doesn't have something going on. Yeah, and that's and
21:17
that's by design. We want to make sure that it's accessible, Like we
21:21
want people to be able to come out, you know, walk from your
21:23
house, come over and do stuff. And that's why the majority of our
21:26
programming is free too, because we want it to be accessible. We want
21:30
people to be able to just come over. It's free, hang out,
21:33
learn something new, take part in something and and we you know, thankfully
21:37
are able to do that. But Dave Alan showing five Any Line brought to

22:07
I had you on. You know, ever since I've been doing this
22:08
year, we talk about festival. That's part of it too. Give us
22:11
the history of festival. Sure, absolutely so. In two thousand and four,
22:15
it kind of was an idea that was spurred from the question why can't
22:21
we have this here? People were traveling, they were going to other festivals
22:25
around the country, around the world and seeing all these really really cool,
22:27
unique things, and people would say, you know, well, why can't
22:30
West Virginia have that? Why can't Charleston have that? And so in two
22:33
thousand and four, a group of folks met with then former mayor Danny Jones
22:38
to you know, explore the idea of could we talk about this, is
22:42
this something we could do? And since then it's just grown and grown and
22:45
grown exponentially. So this is twenty years for us and it is now a
22:51
ten day festival in June, a ten day festival in October, year round
22:55
programming within the school system and after school programs that give more education to students,
23:00
a speaker series that runs from February to October monthly, the Holiday Market
23:07
now at the Capital Market that we do in December, and so we just
23:11
keep kind of growing the programming. And there's something that we think about festival
23:17
being in June, as you said, in festive fall, but this really
23:21
is as you just said, it's a year round thing. It is,
23:22
yeah, I mean, And a lot of stuff, you know, takes
23:25
place a little bit behind the scenes. Some of the things that are in
23:27
the schools and the after school, after school programs. You know, we'll
23:32
send paid artists in there. We pay for all the supplies for everything that
23:36
the kids do. They work with the kids for eight weeks in the spring
23:40
to be able to come up with artwork but also learn about art and things
23:44
like that, and so that that's kind of going on behind the scenes.
23:47
And we also have a program called ticket Town that gives free tickets to students,
23:52
primarily on the West side of Charleston, to attend cultural events for free.
23:56
So like the Charleston Led Opera, gild Children, Seed of Charleston,
24:00
things at the Clay Center, things like that. And not only do we
24:04
arrange those tickets, we can arrange transportation meals because you know, federally mandated
24:11
meal times within the after school programs for them to get their funding, and
24:14
so we work with them on that year round as well. And it takes
24:18
a lot of people to pull this off. I mean a lot of people
24:21
to pull off year long programming, but specifically when you get into the month
24:23
of June. Definitely not just pay. I mean you can't do it with
24:26
just your staff, right, because we're a staff of three. Yeah,
24:30
and so yeah, year round we have three people that are running all of
24:33
this program. Or do you get your volunteers? I mean just people that
24:36
say, hey, I want to help out or yeah, So thankfully we
24:37
have got Thankfully, we have an intern program which we bring in young people
24:42
primarily juniors in high school through college aged kids that will come in and learn
24:48
about different facets of what we do throughout June, and so we have four
24:53
of those. We do have some contract employees that we bring on specifically for
24:59
the month of June for this because it's so big, But we do really
25:03
rely on volunteers and you know, we have people sign up throughout throughout May
25:08
and June to volunteer for us in the month of June. Uh. And
25:11
you know, we have a lot of folks that come back year after year,
25:15
but we also work with some groups like Recovery Point h and some folks
25:18
like that that will bring in a whole group that want to volunteer. I
25:22
was going to ask about that because that when I ask where you got your
25:26
volunteers. So obviously you have a lot of because you know, high school
25:29
kids have to do community service. But I've seen that other organizations and I'm
25:33
happy to hear that you do that do reach out to groups like with Every
25:36
Point and are different halfway houses, whatever, say hey, we need some
25:41
we need some help with this. Yeah. Absolutely, And you know Recovery
25:44
Point especially, I'll just give them a shout out because they have been so
25:47
consistent in their volunteering with us. They usually will come down and help us
25:52
set up on bigger days with a lot of heavy lifting and moving, and
25:56
that they're always more than happy to be there, more than happy to help.
26:00
And so we really appreciate partnerships like that. But I mean there are
26:03
also corporations around here, Dave that need that, you know, give their
26:07
employees maybe a day a month that they need to volunteer or so many hours
26:11
that they need to volunteer. And so those folks as well are some that
26:15
we reach out to to say, you know, would that be something that
26:18
aligns with what your corporation wants. I'm going to have you on several times
26:22
once first of all, really gets up enrolling. But give us the website
26:27
or the social media work can people learn because it's it would be impossible to
26:30
say, okay, we got this going on, because I mean where can
26:33
people go. Yeah, the little book that we have is thirty seven pages
26:34
long, and so I don't want that book as s right, Yeah,
26:37
yeah, little I don't want to take the rest of the time today just
26:40
to read it to you. But if you go to Festival Charleston dot com,
26:44
you can find all of the information for every event that we're putting on
26:47
over those ten days. And also we're on Facebook, we're on x We're
26:52
on Instagram under Festival Charleston. I got a text here it says Recovery Point
26:56
is always bringing thirty to forty people to help Reggie Jones CEO make sure that
27:00
happens throughout the year. Yes, I mean it is truly. They they
27:04
bring so many people, and they're so excited to be there and so appreciative,
27:08
and we we love working with them. It is always such a great
27:11
process. Let me ask you a question, how well do you know Reggie
27:14
Jones? I don't actually let me tell you know what makes Reggie Jones,
27:18
Let's say superstar. He's from Logan. All superstars are from Logan. That's
27:22
what I That is what I've learned from this show. I've been on so
27:26
many times, and every single time I find out how much better Logan is
27:30
than the time for It's I'm just kidding og. Reggie Now went to the
27:33
high school together. He graduated with my wife. He's a Clint. I've
27:36
known Reggie literally since like nineteen eighty two. He is a fantastic individual,
27:40
fantastic family. Yeah, and he's a he's a class actor. I'm friends
27:45
with their director of development, Leah Cook, and they actually have taken over
27:48
ice Cream in the Arts this year. They're the people that are running that
27:52
program. So that'll be going on on the West Side when June twenty third.
27:56
All right, we'll have you on, as I said several times,
27:59
doing you to talk about everything going on for fest of All Mackenzie. I
28:03
appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot, do you think for me?

32:05
Chef Paul, Welcome to the show Man, Thanks for having me, Thank
32:07
you for being here, Thank you for being here. Excitument's building again for
32:09
you. Right, I am excited exciting this year, I'm going to actually
32:13
try to have a good time. So this James Beard a ward. Okay,
32:15
you were nominated last year. I think we had gotten the show to
32:19
talk about it. What was the whole experience like going Was it go to
32:22
Chicago gain this year? Yeah, Chicago Theater. After party is in the
32:28
in the train station. Uh. It was a surreal experience. It was
32:32
a lot, I would say, something I've never experienced before. You know,
32:37
you you watched the Oscars on you know TV Oscar night. It was
32:43
very very similar to that. You know, we our hotel was close enough
32:45
that we walked, we walked around the corner and lights, paparazzi, cameras,
32:52
flashing, red carpet, you know, everything. But them asking me
32:54
what fashion I was They probably tonight, Yeah, who am I wearing?
32:59
And he said, a little chef boyardy, Yes, a little stain on
33:02
my shirt. That's exactly what I'm wearing. But I wondered about that because
33:07
you know, you go out and you probably I mean, I know you've
33:08
read about it, you've probably seen it, but you really don't know what
33:10
to expect till you're actually there. And so you went there last year,
33:15
and now this year, you know, you go back and you're thinking,
33:16
Okay, well I'm gonna do this a little differently this year, do that
33:20
a little differently. I think that I'm gonna try to actually relax and have
33:24
a good time and have fun. You're exactly right, you know. I
33:29
think first time anywhere, you know, you're you're nervous, you don't know
33:32
what to expect. You're kind of a fish out of water. I'm like,
33:35
oh my gosh, these are all the best chefs from around the country.
33:37
And then meause, how did I get here? A little bit of
33:42
that imposter syndrome? Right, But you know, then you realize how much
33:45
work has gone into this, not only over the last twenty five years of
33:49
my career, but also with our teams, everybody at ten ten, and
33:52
you know the support that we received not only from our wonderful city but our
33:58
awesome state. I mean, I really had to buy a mobile phone charger
34:01
because my phone was ringing and beeping and messaging off the hook. And this
34:07
is what West Virginians do. It's one of our own I was part of
34:12
years ago, going back to twenty eleven, I was part of the still
34:15
I am a part of the team with the Worst Lot with Lando Murphy and
34:17
when Landau was doing America's Got Talent, and I was living in Logan at
34:21
the time, his hometown, and I was there and I helped with the
34:25
management team with a lot of that stuff that we did with Landale back then,
34:30
and how people rallied around him, how they did, you know,
34:34
with mister Bowen not long ago, and how we just do how we do
34:37
so for those of us who can't go to Chicago. Evan from Capitol Market,
34:43
Ryan and I were hoping that you could maybe hook us up to go
34:45
to it, but apparently we're not going to Chicago. We can go to
34:49
Capital Market though, right if you can't be in Chicago, it's the next
34:52
best thing. It's the next best thing. What are you doing over there?
34:53
So, in the context of wanting to support someone that does so much,
35:00
not just for our community but specifically the market, last year, we
35:06
had the opportunity to honor and celebrate a guy that is always, you know,
35:12
the man behind the scenes making someone's wedding perfect, making sure an event
35:15
and a dinner or an engagement. The emotional connection I think that people have
35:22
with Paul sort of is linked to those core memories, and this was an
35:27
opportunity for our community specifically to celebrate just one of the best people that we
35:34
all know. And we're hoping to recreate some of that magic that that we
35:38
captured last year. So we've last year we kind of we kind of did
35:44
it under the gun, and this year we've put some ducks in a row,
35:46
we've retoold some things, and I think we've got a really unique evening
35:51
lined up. Chef curated seven of his favorite local chefs to come round out
35:59
a fantastic menu and spread. We're working with Ted and Venue to to do
36:05
some some nicely paired drinks or monitors set up throughout the market to stream the
36:13
awards so as as it gets time to announce Best Chefs Southeast, Yeah,
36:19
that's and that's that's your category Best Chefs Chef. So it's Georgia, North
36:23
Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia. So you know,
36:29
you think about the other Charleston, right, you think about Atlanta,
36:32
you think about Nashville, Nashville, you think about Charlotte. I mean,
36:37
these are major cities that little Charleston Weston, West Virginia. But you know,
36:40
I think you know, I work with Chelsea Ruby at the Department of
36:45
Tourism all the time, and you know one of our things that we say
36:49
all the time is now the secret's out. Now we are dining destination.
36:52
And it's not just me. Obviously. The reason why we wanted to include
36:58
other chefs is because that one of my pillars is supporting the rising tide,
37:04
you know, supporting everybody, supporting everybody in town, supporting everybody in our
37:07
state. Offering help if I can, offering advice, taking advice, learning
37:14
every day from others and really trying to be a little bit of that water
37:17
that's raising all of our boats in West Virginia. One again, we're talking
37:22
with with Chif, Paul Smith, and Evan Osborne from Capitol Market. So
37:24
what time the things started? Capital Market on Sunday. The party itself will
37:30
run from six to nine pm. It's sort of a fluid evening in that
37:36
well, this is a live event where we've got we've got some boots on
37:39
the ground in Chicago. Our board president of the Food Guy, Stephen Keith,
37:43
will be there providing us text updates throughout the evening. All right,
37:46
everyone, time to shut up and let's gather around around the big screen and
37:52
we'll come together and hopefully have a toast right after. Well, and you
38:00
you know we another one of our pillars is supporting community and community. The
38:05
reason why I moved home wasn't because of the accolades. It wasn't because,
38:08
you know, I thought, James Beard, I never would have thought this
38:10
before. But to be able to be nominated in Charleston, West Virginia versus
38:15
Ashville, Napa Valley, New York City, the other wonderful places that I've
38:21
lived just being so much more, you know, and it literally takes a
38:24
village. People like Evan, people like yourself, people that are supporting us.
38:30
You know, Chad Raither and Marissa over over at Huntington Bank. I
38:34
mean, they're the title sponsor. They said it wasn't even a question.
38:37
They said, absolutely what we say. And then you know, there's so
38:40
many other sponsors. I mean Nel Chilton, who you know passed away her
38:45
foundation sponsored Jason Adams, who's going to go and film this for us,
38:50
and he really has done so much. I don't know if you've seen the
38:53
videos he's done in the past, but it literally gets me choked up every
38:58
time I watch it. He is a master his craft, just like we
39:00
all are at ours, and he captured everything, and hopefully this year he'll
39:07
he'll capture, you know, a victory for us and the and the story
39:09
will right itself, you know, a little old guy from Charles and West
39:13
Virginia against you know, these other chefs from these big cities. I could,
39:16
for some reason, I think that you should include Tony Kari in this,
39:19
and you should have after you. I think I could hear I could
39:22
just hear Kariti saying after hopefully after he wins. You know, it's a
39:25
great day to be a mountaineer wherever you may be. And this is a
39:29
Marshall guy, but's saying that. But I know, but but I know
39:30
what that means, you know. And I was lucky enough to meet the
39:34
three guys and Tony and I were talking and he's a big foodie and oh
39:37
yes, it has been to the restaurant and we just literally sat and people
39:43
we talked about food for I don't even know if we talked about anything else
39:46
other than food, right, you know, that's it is. This is
39:51
awesome. It's awesome for everybody, and it's something that everybody can get behind,
39:54
and it's you knowfully, if we win, we win, and it's
39:58
absolutely fantastic. But we've really already won. Well you put that light on
40:01
West Virginia, and you know, you hear the old cliche, Well,
40:05
it's an honor just to be nominated whatever. But this is a totally different
40:07
thing because if you look at the Oscars or whatever, people know that those
40:10
people that are on stage or the Grammys, they know that they're the best
40:14
of what they do. With a situation like this, I don't know that.
40:17
And this again goes goes back to Chelsea Ruby and Evan you can wait.
40:22
I don't know that people thought about Charleston, West Virginia is in there
40:25
with Charlotte and Nashville and Atlanta. I mean, I like to look at
40:30
it and at risk of aciding too much importance to it, I don't think
40:35
you because we're now starting to see, you know, with the kids cooking
40:38
classes that we do during regatta. We have a kid's cooking competition, and
40:44
now I think we have one of the participants that participated the first year that
40:47
is now working with Paul. It's it's so much more than just the culinary
40:57
scene. I think it's building a culture and a community, and it's giving
41:00
our next generation a vibrant and thriving area in which to hopefully remain and call
41:07
home. And I think that you can't undersell this moment, and it's it's
41:16
one. It's just incredible for me to be to play a small part in
41:22
it. But we're seeing payoff and in ways that I don't think we anticipated
41:28
as the city of Charleston. Yeah, I mean, we have one hundred
41:30
people that show up to our you know, let's get cooking on the first
41:35
you know, the first class was last month. People are excited about it,
41:38
and you look at why people travel. Culinary food is now top three
41:45
and now not only myself, but you have Appalachian Kitchen and Snowshoe that was
41:50
nominated this year. You have obviously Lowriries who was nominated last year with me.
41:55
Lowry's has been at the top of their game for you know, since
41:59
Otis had it. But you look at the consistency and the quality of that
42:04
kind of restaurant and if I can help make all of our restaurants bigger,
42:08
make all of our restaurants busier, if they come because they're going to the
42:13
capital market and come to ten ten or go to sohos or vice versa.
42:16
I mean, that's the name of the game, is getting more people here
42:20
to West Virginia. I think people have a preconceived notion of what they're going
42:24
to get or what they think West Virginia is, and a lot of times
42:29
that's not always the positive side. The road kick in the dancing outlaw,
42:35
right you know, we're not that. We are a force to be reckoned
42:37
with in tourism right now, we have natural beauty. I think you know,
42:42
Anthony Bourdain said it when he came here. West Virginia was always the
42:45
place that somebody came and took something and left with it our natural resources.
42:52
Now, I hope they come and what they take is a memory, what
42:55
they take is a little piece of you know, oh my gosh, we
43:00
want to come back because West Virginia has this innate sense of hospitality that is
43:05
second to none. Yep, you're absolutely right about that. All right,
43:07
Uh, give us the time, give us all the stats for your event
43:10

43:37
a couple. If I lose, you know, and again it's not a
43:39
lose. You know, last year we came in second, and we came
43:43
in second to a chef that got hey, uh you know this year they
43:47
got a one star Michelin rating, you know, in in Atlanta. So
43:51
I don't feel like we lost now work in the conversation and that's that's awesome.
43:55
But like you said, it's no longer just an honor to be here.
44:00
We want to win this thing this year. Yeah, absolutely, And
44:01
so some things start about six o'clock over there. You got all these chefs
44:05

47:42
kid fishing Day. It's free fishing day in West Virginia. Mister outdoors,
47:45
the Hall of Famer Chris Lawrence is here. Hey man, what up?
47:49
How you doing? Buddy? I'm good, there are you? I'm doing
47:51
good? And Rob exactly mister Hall of Famer and Robrial Yeah, I actually
47:58
that's Rob fishing. Yes, I love that Rob fishing reel a host of
48:04
up real early ninety six to one kws. You guys are going to be
48:07
doing some fishing. Mark, Chris, I'm gonna start with you. How
48:08
do this whole thing start? It was an idea that Rob's predecessor, a
48:14
Wolf Bowers. He loved to fish and I love to fish, and he
48:17
said, why don't we do something? And I think Dale Cooper was in
48:21
on the brainstorming session too. They said, why don't we just do something
48:24
to get people to get their kids together and just do something. And since
48:30
this weekend is free fishing weekend, we've always centered it on that, and
48:35
we just said, let's us have people come out on the free fishing day
48:37
and bring their kids and go fishing, and we can we can't really provide
48:40
the rod and reel to them, but most people can get that for a
48:45
reasonable price. I mean, you know, twenty bucks. You're outfitted and
48:47
ready to go with everything you need and we'll provide the bait. And if
48:52
you want to come to Coonskin Park tomorrow from ten to noon. Even if
48:55
you don't know how to fish, I know how, Rob knows how we
49:00
can. We can bait your hook and take fish off and that will be
49:02
uh you know. That way you don't have to worry about doing something wrong
49:06
or you can just focus on having a good time with your little ones.
49:07
And the weather's going to be great. That's what they tell me. What
49:10
they tell me, Rob, I love that we have an in house expert,
49:15
so it isn't the biggest fear of trying anything new for somebody just not
49:20
knowing what you're doing and looking silly. Well, we couldn't find anybody better
49:23
to looking silly. We're on the radio for a reason. But you know,
49:30
we couldn't find any better to give you the tips and tricks to get
49:32
started. So if you've never fished before, this this is great for you
49:37
know, kids of all ages two to ninety two and get the kids outside,
49:40
you know. Yeah, And that's the thing. And actually Chris is
49:44
going to be there with a net and when they come they have to put
49:45
their devices inside the net. Is that right? Yeah? And then we're
49:49
gonnaiate that into the water. No, Notiva, But I meant atte is
49:53
she anyway? In all seriousness, in all seriousness. So we have a
49:59
really problem, a big problem, maybe less or so in West Virginia getting
50:02
kids out of the dang house and wanting to do something. Yeah, And
50:07
it's and I can't. I guess it's just because I'm showing my age.
50:12
I don't recall. I mean when I was a kid, I would have
50:15
never dreamed on a pretty day of being inside. Oh now no, Well,
50:17
first of all, my dad would have thrown us out, locked the
50:21
door. But it's happened to me and my grandfather. Literally on a nice
50:24
day. If I was hanging out with my grandfather, which I did sometimes
50:27
in the summer, my grandfather would come in and turn off the TV and
50:30
say get outside, yeah, and don't come back in until dark. Yeah.
50:34
And then if you and if you said I'm bored there's nothing to do,
50:37
my dad could find you something to do. You never you never said
50:39
that around my dad. But I spent my entire childhood on a creek,
50:44
whether it was fishing or just wading in the water, turned over rocks,
50:47
looking for crawdads, trapsing through the woods looking for helgrimites, looking for worms,
50:54
all the things that I did as a kid. It just doesn't I
50:59
had so much fun and have such great memories that I can't imagine a kid
51:02
not doing that. I think you've been deprived of your jiltimes. They just
51:06
need a little push to show it exactly. Yeah, And especially those that
51:09
are under maybe the age of eight, seven six, If you if you
51:14
take them out and start pointing things out to them, they're fascinating and they
51:17
pick up on stuff quickly and they want to learn. And once they get
51:21
interested and they want to learn more and more and more. And that's the
51:22
whole idea of why they have free Fishing weekend is to give you an excuse
51:28
to get out there with your kids and let them get part of the pun
51:30
hooked on it. Because there's nothing like that tug on the end of the
51:35
line that'll make you want to come back and do it and do it even
51:37
more. And the one thing is, Dave, like you said, a
51:39
lot of us grew up fishing, but as we got older and suddenly we
51:45
had kids, life, life, happens, and unfortunately, the first casualty
51:49
of that is people stop going fishing. Well, now this weekend, you
51:52
don't have to buy a fishing license. You can simply go fishing, take
51:57
your kids and without having to buy a license. You realize that you probably
52:00
shouldn't have given this up. You should have given something else. Yeah,
52:04
and it starts at what time? It's ten to noon? Ten to noon
52:07
and Rob, low impact, low cost, sunlight and fresh air are good
52:12
for your mental health. You brought up helger mites. I don't think we
52:15
need to bring anybody's religion into this. Maybe the first time the word helga
52:17
mites has ever been on this show. Guys, appreciate you and we will.
52:22
We'll be out there tomorrow looking forward to Chris Lawrence, Rob Reel uh
52:27
So. I appreciate everybody who had a loaded up. Should they appreciate everybody
52:30

52:31
