- 0:25Oh you, I love how you're just sitting there smiling like a
- 0:29gremlin because you know what you've done.
- 0:32Hi everyone, Welcome back to Anime Club, the show where every
- 0:37week we get together and we talk about our anime, sometimes from
- 0:41a dusty old classroom, sometimes from a forest filled with
- 0:45spirits of the past. This week we are doing a film
- 0:49and I have with me my wonderful Co host Christopher Need.
- 0:53All right, Yeah, All right. Yeah.
- 0:59And we're doing origin spirits of the past.
- 1:02How do you feel coming into this episode?
- 1:06I've genuinely gone into a blind because I said I'd recognize the
- 1:09cover, but that's about as much as I knew about this going into
- 1:13it. I think I'd saw the cover in
- 1:16HMV. That was about it.
- 1:19I hadn't had anyone talking about it.
- 1:20I still haven't seen anyone talking about it, and I'm sure
- 1:24there will be. But yeah, it was different.
- 1:28It was different, wasn't it? So, and this is one of the
- 1:31reasons I got excited and wanted to recommend it to you because I
- 1:34think despite the fact that we're clearly worlds apart,
- 1:36after all, you are a lead and I am but a humble peasant.
- 1:42And we both grew up in different parts of the country and had
- 1:46like not hugely dissimilar childhoods.
- 1:48But we one thing that we do share is the experience of going
- 1:51into HMV, into the world cinema section, going past or just past
- 1:55the world similar section to the anime, and looking at covers as
- 2:00part of our like, formative memories.
- 2:02And I had the same thing where I was like, you'll have seen this
- 2:05cover because I saw this cover 100 times and for some reason
- 2:09never quite reached for it. So yeah, when it was suggested
- 2:15that I watch it, I was like, Oh yeah, I would actually like to
- 2:18see this. Who?
- 2:20Who suggested it? My boyfriend suggested it to me.
- 2:27He actually did a really cute thing when he was like, Munson,
- 2:31would you? Because he calls me by my
- 2:33surname like I'm some fancy lady.
- 2:36Would you like to go on an anime date with me?
- 2:38That was the request. And so I would have said yes to
- 2:40pretty much anything because I thought that was really cute.
- 2:44Aw, I think that's that's nice because I mean, the first anime
- 2:48I made, well, I got Molly to watch with this was obviously
- 2:53Grave of the Fireflies. Which is a classic, but is under
- 2:57no circumstances should that end be ever be anyone's first anime.
- 3:01It's deeply traumatic and it changes people.
- 3:05And I got a message half halfway through, I think you guys had
- 3:08paused for a tab and a Wii break.
- 3:11And there's I got a video of Molly in tears being like, why
- 3:16have you done this to me? Yeah, she wasn't happy with
- 3:20this. Yeah.
- 3:21She still watched it though. Yeah, she did.
- 3:24She made it all the way through. Yeah, which I'm surprised at.
- 3:28And what did you watch it on? What device did you guys watch
- 3:31it on? So we watched it in bed and, and
- 3:36I've got a projector in the bedroom and projected onto the
- 3:39ceiling. So it was quite, quite wide
- 3:41screen as well. No matter where you looked, no
- 3:45matter where you looked, you actually you were like his mom
- 3:47in it. The haunting The haunting image
- 3:51of more orphans. Yeah.
- 3:54But yeah, so that was that was Origin Spirits of the past.
- 4:00And then the wonderful boyfriend reached behind him into the
- 4:08cupboard and whipped out the actual DVD of this.
- 4:10And I was like, Oh my God, I remember.
- 4:12So I was like, the whole thing was incredibly cute and
- 4:15nostalgic. And then after I'd watched it, I
- 4:18really wanted to see what you thought as well because there
- 4:20were some bits of it that I thought, oh, Chris will really
- 4:22like this. So, yeah.
- 4:26So that's why we're watching this week.
- 4:29Origins. Spirits of the Past.
- 4:31How would you describe this film?
- 4:32What's this? What's the story?
- 4:34I. Am so quite like a post
- 4:38apocalyptic film and this is in a post apocalyptic feature where
- 4:46a plant has destroyed the world and there's a very delicate
- 4:51imbalance between the survivors of the plants right in the world
- 4:55and the forest and the our main character Agito, he is kind of
- 5:03in the in between because there is like a bunch of humans that
- 5:07are like a bit more militaristic and technology driven.
- 5:11They're in one camp and then there's a forest in the other
- 5:14camp, which is this druids on that side, but you don't see
- 5:16much of them. And it's kind of like it's
- 5:21talked about the imbalance between that and how there's a
- 5:25relationship between them, all that kind of stuff.
- 5:27And then there was a girl from the past who was being woken
- 5:32from cry or sleep in a weird device and she, Yep, Tula, she
- 5:38just wants to go home again because she's just woke up in
- 5:40this post public world, realized there's no TV, there's there's
- 5:45no hot chocolate or anything, you know, that kind of thing.
- 5:48She doesn't, but I just. I would think that anyway.
- 5:51No monster. I was going to say, what in this
- 5:54world where you wake up and there's a forest and scrap,
- 6:00basically, yeah. What's the thing that you miss
- 6:03the most that isn't incident? Because obviously that would be
- 6:06the immediate concern. No, no, even before insulin I
- 6:10would say cigarettes and white monster.
- 6:16Would you miss White Monster over Greg's?
- 6:20Yeah, yeah, I would. Yeah, I don't have Greggs for
- 6:26breakfast. You do sometimes, actually.
- 6:32It's just you have it with a kind of monster.
- 6:34Yeah, it's not complete without a kind of white monster.
- 6:37Speaking of which. I think if you cut you, you
- 6:41would bleed that horrible luminescent colour that monster
- 6:44is inside the can. I see White white monster is
- 6:47different. It's pure.
- 6:49It's it's, it's like a, it's like a lemonade color.
- 6:57Oh, is it? Yeah, it's not like the weird we
- 7:00color that the green monster is. Yeah.
- 7:02Yeah, yeah. Because I always thought that
- 7:04that's why they put it in a can of bottle, no?
- 7:08Just is it you that shared that picture of the the rat in the
- 7:11can of Monster the other day was that?
- 7:13Too. No, that was that was too many
- 7:15in our Discord. Yeah, and it was truly
- 7:18horrifying. That pitch has been going around
- 7:20for a long time. They did the same with Coke as
- 7:23well. And see, I don't drink Coke
- 7:26Cola, I drink Pepsi Max. And I've I've drank lumps from
- 7:31the bottom of a Pepsi Max car by accident.
- 7:33No, you haven't. I have because Molly.
- 7:36Molly messaged them as well-being.
- 7:38Like can you explain why my boyfriend just drank a lumpy
- 7:41Pepsi Max They never got back to her.
- 7:44Can you explain why my boyfriend just drank lamps?
- 7:49My lamps. My lamps.
- 7:54Oh, sorry, yeah, origins. So yeah, post pocket world's.
- 7:58Balance. And this last called Tula is not
- 8:04the first person that's been woken woken up by cryo from cryo
- 8:09sleep. There's also another past person
- 8:12called. What's he called?
- 8:16Kane. Kane, Right?
- 8:18Kane, Yeah, fair enough. And he is.
- 8:22Woke up previously, been in the same in between the village and
- 8:25thought actually I've got more of a chance of making the world
- 8:30like it was in the past if I go with the military side as
- 8:32opposed to the forest who just want everyone to be green and
- 8:36harmonious for nature so. You have like 2 tribes of people
- 8:40in this film. There's the like the the the
- 8:45people who are right live right on the edge or like in the kind
- 8:48of like sort of mountain top town right beside the forest who
- 8:54act as a kind of buffer zone between humanity and the forest
- 8:58and have a kind of alliance with the druids.
- 9:02And then you have the military based nation who are very much
- 9:07at war with the forest. And then you get the people that
- 9:11are different as well, which are the silver haired people who
- 9:15have been granted the power of the forest where they've got
- 9:18superhuman strength, loads of stamina, but in if they go too
- 9:23far with that power, they become one with the forest and tenant
- 9:28with tree. Yeah, or a big.
- 9:31And how and how cool is the old guy?
- 9:34So there's lots of different characters.
- 9:35You have like the leader of the kind of people on the edge of
- 9:38the forest who's this like old lady who has white hair.
- 9:42So everyone with white hair has this like forest power.
- 9:46You have Agito's father, who is in the like at the beginning of
- 9:54the film, you, you, he's like very ill.
- 9:57And you get the sense that Agito is looking after him and making
- 10:00sure that he's OK. And then you also have like
- 10:04another guy who just seems to be like roaming around in a long
- 10:07black trench coat. And then at one point he rips it
- 10:09off. He's like really buff old guy
- 10:12who just then becomes like, he's like punching missiles out of
- 10:15the sky and shit. He's so cool.
- 10:18He's by far the coolest character, but I can't remember
- 10:23if his name, if he's a Gashi, or if he's Doctor Sackle.
- 10:31No, Doctor Sackle's the guy. The two.
- 10:34The father isn't him. Yeah, yeah, he he is the one
- 10:37who? Oh, is it Beirut?
- 10:38No, I remember the name of the old guy.
- 10:44Was it a gashi? Yeah, it's a gashi.
- 10:48Yeah, yeah, he's so cool. He's by father, called his
- 10:50character. I wanted to see more of him.
- 10:53Yeah, I'll just put the and what was I saying again?
- 10:59Oh yeah. And the doctor like hackers.
- 11:03No, what's he called him? Yeah.
- 11:08And yeah, he, he created that plant and it got to got a bit
- 11:15mental, so they took it to the moon.
- 11:18He created the plant in a lab on the moon.
- 11:22And then what you find out is that it's OK who's trying to
- 11:24destroy the forest. And basically you discover he's
- 11:28like trying to destroy the forest by essentially destroying
- 11:31all life. So it's very much a nuclear,
- 11:34nuclear option. And what you discover is that he
- 11:40actually messed with the safety protocols of the experiment that
- 11:43was growing this plant to and made it like uncontrollable
- 11:48essentially. And at the beginning it has some
- 11:51crazy beautiful shots and scenes in this like so the background
- 11:56arts gorgeous. It's got some really cool stuff
- 12:00in like the towns where you've got like all this like it's like
- 12:04old broken down city that's then been repurposed into like a new
- 12:09city but like which is kind of but like all it's all hobbled
- 12:13together and like scrappers junkyard of a town.
- 12:16Yeah, yeah. You see like, like blocks of
- 12:18flats that have half collapsed and people have turned them into
- 12:23like a, like a well for bringing buckets up because it's got the
- 12:27heights. So they have like a like a
- 12:28pulley system bringing buckets up all the time because that's
- 12:31their currency, because what's scarce and opposed to pocket
- 12:33world water. So it's the most fun.
- 12:38The forest also controls the water as well, so it's absorbed
- 12:42a lot of the water and the only. And that's why they're kind of
- 12:45like at odds with the forest. So there's only so much water
- 12:49that gets released to the people.
- 12:51So they have to like, bring water from the edge of the
- 12:53forest up. Yeah.
- 12:57And it's guarded by those weird druid people, isn't?
- 13:01It. Yeah, I would say so, yeah.
- 13:03Yeah, but then you also have it right at the beginning, I think
- 13:06one of the coolest opening sequences, secondary maybe only
- 13:10to ghost in the shell, which is the plant in the form of a
- 13:18mighty dragon hatching or it always looks like it's hatching
- 13:21from inside the moon. But you did, you know, you later
- 13:24discover that because it's this experiment gone wrong, it breaks
- 13:27apart the moon and flying down to Earth while trying to be
- 13:35destroyed by like all of the military on.
- 13:40Earth. Before it lands and creates this
- 13:43this ecological crisis for humanity.
- 13:47So cool. And it's got a very, very cool
- 13:49opening soundtrack, I think. Yes.
- 13:52So that song is, it's got Japanese name, which I don't
- 13:57know what it is, but it means harmony.
- 13:58Anyway, that's what the song is called and I don't know the way
- 14:04I watch this and I watch it on YouTube.
- 14:06I don't have the actual DVD copy and I think I sent you the link
- 14:10as well. And it's had the Toon Army
- 14:13Cartoon Network intro on it, so it showed you all of it.
- 14:16It was amazing, like proper understanding.
- 14:18Like Ed, Eddie and Eddie. And yeah, and afterwards, after
- 14:23the credits as well, but it had the subtitles with it as well.
- 14:27And it had them in English. And but I had the English words
- 14:31in English and it was saying numbers.
- 14:33And apparently I tried looking this up just before and I think
- 14:37I was half right, but it's got, it says a bunch of numbers like
- 14:413/15/25 and all this sort of stuff.
- 14:45And they correspond to letters. And if you put them the letters
- 14:48together in the Western alphabet, it spells the Japanese
- 14:52word for harmony or something like that.
- 14:55I might be wrong on that and I went kind of like 1/2 rabbit
- 15:00hole thing and oh is that true and a half googled it and half
- 15:04like tried it but as far as I know it's true.
- 15:08Still quotes on everything. I like it.
- 15:11I'll take that. I want that to be true, yeah.
- 15:13Me too be a cool factor. It was.
- 15:16It is a cool. Let's say it's.
- 15:18Let's figure it out, and then if it's not true, I'm sure you'll
- 15:21put a correction in. Yeah, I would.
- 15:25If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. It's only my facts that you're
- 15:27correct. Your own fact should keep as is.
- 15:30Yep, on Fact Check yourself. I have confidence.
- 15:36I don't want to undermine confidence.
- 15:38Yeah, yeah. But no, it is.
- 15:43So it's got like quite a good, I think it's got quite a good
- 15:45soundtrack all the way through and.
- 15:47It's amazing. The animation itself is really
- 15:50good, kind of a bit reminiscent of like some some Studio Ghibli
- 15:56kind of energy, a little bit Manga Studios Y.
- 16:03So like. But I think like it was released
- 16:06what in the 2000? 2006, yeah. 2006, yeah.
- 16:11So I thought the background design, the difference between
- 16:17the the military place, which is I've found it before Ragnar is
- 16:24the city of the technology war people difference between that
- 16:29and the forest in the backgrounds in the design and
- 16:33the ruined cities and everything looks absolutely amazing.
- 16:36The chase scenes, the even the fight in it brilliant.
- 16:41The animated. I just think the story let's it
- 16:44down. So you said one of the things.
- 16:48So I looked up the kind of opening reviews that this got at
- 16:53the time, and you're pretty much, you've nailed the
- 16:57criticism, the common criticism that a lot of the kind of
- 17:01Japanese anime reviewers had at the time, which is that it's
- 17:06really beautiful. The soundtrack's amazing, the
- 17:08animation quality is really good, and it's the characters
- 17:13that lack something. They also really praise the
- 17:16world building, which I think is true.
- 17:19And one of the things that we were saying before is like,
- 17:21wouldn't it be great if they've just done more with it?
- 17:24Like, wouldn't it be great if they've just got a bit more in
- 17:26depth, if they're just kind of dug into the world a bit more
- 17:29and it hadn't felt like quite so rushed?
- 17:35Well, yeah, that's what I was thinking.
- 17:37I mean, I'm not expecting a three hour film out with this,
- 17:40but it I think it could be longer and it could have been.
- 17:43So me watching it, I wanted more of a connection to the the
- 17:49forest and to understand the true people and why this world
- 17:53is functioning as it is at the minute.
- 17:56And I wanted to see the other perspective as opposed to Kane,
- 18:01who just said I want it back to the way it was before.
- 18:04I want him to say why his life at the minute in Ragnar is crap
- 18:12is why he feels so hard. Don't do that.
- 18:14He has to go back. I know in that he kind of
- 18:16mentions on the guilt that he feels for unleashing this
- 18:20experiment onto the world. But like, people are happy here
- 18:25and is the dad said the tree dad, he was just like, look, I
- 18:30know your view. This world is it's probably
- 18:33really primitive to you, but it's all we know.
- 18:36And we're happy. We've got a happy existence.
- 18:38We're surviving with. We're not thriving just yet, but
- 18:41we're getting there. And so bear that in mind when
- 18:44you when you look upon the village.
- 18:46And I think, yeah, I get that. But I wanted a bit more of it,
- 18:51bit more development in the the characters that even the main
- 18:57the main character Agito I could.
- 19:00Do. I don't like what's what besides
- 19:04stopping the end of the world. What's his stake in this like?
- 19:10I mean, that's a pretty good stake I think for.
- 19:14Like I know, but. But I think his other stake is
- 19:16that he wants to rescue the girl that he's decided he's in love
- 19:19with after seeing her once but seeing her naked.
- 19:24Once for what's 2 minutes you busy spends the night at his
- 19:28family's house and then she she goes off because she realizes
- 19:32that someone else like him. She doesn't stay the night at
- 19:36his family's house because she only goes to his family house
- 19:39later when she meets his father. So that like this is a big
- 19:42spoiler bit because I think one of the best bits of this film is
- 19:46when they go, they do kind of dive more into the world itself
- 19:50and the relationship between man and forest and the kind of the
- 19:55push and pull of it. And what you find out is that
- 19:58the people with the white hair, there's a price that comes with
- 20:01the power that they borrow from the forest.
- 20:04And that price is that they over time become the forest.
- 20:07So like Agito's father, like the disease that you find out he's
- 20:12got is that he's actually becoming a.
- 20:14Like a just a full blown tree and Aggie toes like guarding him
- 20:19from the sun so that he doesn't grow quickly and like making
- 20:22sure he stays watered and all sorts of things.
- 20:26But I think it's tough for me that that was one of the moments
- 20:29where I was like, oh, this film's this film's really good.
- 20:33Like I love an old tree man. Like, that feels like something
- 20:36that does feel like there's something that matters there.
- 20:40Like, you know, Agito's relationship to his dad, the
- 20:43fact that he ends up following his father's footsteps.
- 20:46Even though he witnesses his father's end, he still like
- 20:51takes up the mantle of like this forest power, knowing the price
- 20:57that he's going to have to pay in order to save save the girl,
- 21:04save the world and like, and I think those bits are really
- 21:09cool. But I think you're right.
- 21:10There's like a once they get to Ragnar.
- 21:12So she Tudor decides that she's going to go to Ragnar, which I
- 21:16can't really blame her. If you if you woke up, if you
- 21:19went to bed this evening and woke up in a world with no
- 21:25indoor plumbing, no electricity, going to the place with the most
- 21:31technology would be incredibly tempting.
- 21:34Like, it feels like a sensible decision for her to make.
- 21:37It feels natural. Yeah.
- 21:40I mean, all the warships and stuff would probably make me
- 21:42think twice, but, you know, it is what it is.
- 21:49And then from that point, the film, I think the pacing gets a
- 21:52bit wonky and it starts to feel quite rushed because then you
- 21:56stop learning more about the characters and it just becomes
- 21:59about what the characters are doing.
- 22:01Whereas up until then, it's quite, you have these kind of
- 22:03slower more bits. And I do wonder if maybe this is
- 22:06a film ripe for ATV series where you could like, get to know,
- 22:12like, I want to know. Yeah.
- 22:13Like you mentioned the druids. The druids are cool as hell,
- 22:16like hat like, and at the beginning the boys get in
- 22:19trouble for like going down to where the water is and like
- 22:22stealing water basically. But the, you know, the druids
- 22:26don't seem like they're going to punish the boys.
- 22:29It just seems like a kind of like slap on the wrist kind of
- 22:31approach to it. So there's like, what's the
- 22:34relationship between the druids and everyone else?
- 22:36And. Yeah, I mean, I mean, even I
- 22:40noticed with Kane as well. Have you noticed what all of the
- 22:44the bracelets he's got in his arm?
- 22:46Yeah, they're all the necklace, the control necklaces from.
- 22:48So like, where are those people? He's been collecting them.
- 22:52Like that's another great question.
- 22:54Also, he's got this badass like right hand woman Lieutenant
- 22:59who's like this hench muscle Mama who's super badass and you
- 23:04see her hardly at all. Like wouldn't it have been cool
- 23:07to get a really great fight scene with her for like, I think
- 23:10you see her briefly fight Agito or someone and then you see her
- 23:15commanding troops at the end. Yeah, and that's it, like.
- 23:19Not enough. That's like it.
- 23:21It's not enough. So there are some characters in
- 23:23this that aren't served well. I think also, he's very quick
- 23:28to, like, discard his friend and hang out with a New Girl.
- 23:31I mean, we've all got a buddy like that who's like, oh, I'm in
- 23:34love now. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:36I'm so distracted. I've got myself an anime date.
- 23:42I don't have time to do this live anymore anyway.
- 23:47That is not fair. The reason we can't do it live
- 23:50because we don't have enough subscribers.
- 23:52Which reminds me, please hit that button down below.
- 23:54Give us a follow, give us a like.
- 23:56It all helps get us into like we're trying to rebuild anime
- 24:00club as its own entity, its own thing.
- 24:02And at the moment we can't even go live.
- 24:04So we are having to pre record, which obviously puts a huge
- 24:07burden on Chris. Father of a small child.
- 24:09Father of a small child LED of his own island.
- 24:13I do. I do kind of like edit and now
- 24:15I'm getting at the swing of it and I think we can go live now.
- 24:20Did we hit a milestone? I think it's 100 Subs you can.
- 24:25Yeah, we've hit 100 Subs. Thank you so much to everyone
- 24:27who has subscribed. That's very exciting.
- 24:31We should try to. I think made Chris's Chris's and
- 24:34I is weak that when we saw that follower count took over.
- 24:37So please, like, you know, help us more channel out.
- 24:41We're just out here enjoying anime.
- 24:43If you enjoy anime too, stick around and we can enjoy anime
- 24:47together. High points, low points for you.
- 24:52So we've got like animation, great story, not so much.
- 24:55Did you have any favorite characters?
- 24:59So I think Agateur, Agateur, he's very bland.
- 25:06The the the main, the main villain.
- 25:09And Kane, I think he's very blonde.
- 25:13OK, Tula, I think she's very blonde.
- 25:16So quite bland. Do you know genuinely who my
- 25:19favorite guy is? Tree Man?
- 25:23Because I'm like, he had something interesting about.
- 25:28I do think it was funny. I also, as everyone knows, Chris
- 25:31and I send each other messages when we are watching these
- 25:33things together through the week.
- 25:35Do you think I was going to see the stone?
- 25:39For a minute I thought you were going to say this thing and I
- 25:42got 3 messages from Chris during this film.
- 25:45The 1st is did I just see a guy have a like a stone shoved up
- 25:50his butt? I like didn't couldn't remember
- 25:52so he clipped it and sent it to me.
- 25:54And there is a bit where he like falls on a stone and there's
- 25:57like a very comical like chase at the beginning of the film.
- 26:01Right up the hoop. This and the second video I got
- 26:06was your dad's a tree, your dad's a tree.
- 26:12Yeah. And then the third one is
- 26:14towards the end where for some reason the translation is we're
- 26:17shutting down Islam. Slightly weird.
- 26:20We're not sure. I'm not sure what that's about.
- 26:24I think I can't remember what it's called, but do you know
- 26:27what the emergency program is that's that's meant to destroy
- 26:31the world to bring it in you? It's an it's a it's a bunch of
- 26:34letters put together S scam or something like that.
- 26:37So. It's to herd the.
- 26:40And it was YouTube automatic subtitles.
- 26:43So I've I've knew I've I always watch YouTube with subtitles on
- 26:50because it I don't know what helps us here better.
- 26:54Which is fine, but it never gets it right, especially if
- 26:57someone's got an accent. Yeah, also, have you noticed how
- 27:01it never gets our names right? And no, I don't think I've
- 27:10really watched these back on YouTube.
- 27:13Probably because you're editing them.
- 27:15I watch them back. Yeah.
- 27:16Because I don't get to. It's our because I want to see
- 27:18what you've edited and how you've done me dirty.
- 27:21Yeah, I might just put a random like fart noise in it somewhere,
- 27:26no? Why not?
- 27:27Funsie. Why not funsies?
- 27:29Just for fun find the fart new game.
- 27:33So yeah. So would you recommend how many?
- 27:36How many drops of water out of a tree would you give this 5 is.
- 27:41A kind of scale is that. 5 is a full tree, 1 is a teeny tiny
- 27:46sapling. M just below mid, I would say
- 27:51two 2 1/2. Oh really?
- 27:54That low? Yeah, because I think.
- 27:57That's. So fair.
- 27:59So I'm I'm thinking if, if I'm recommending this, I could
- 28:02recommend so many better things than this, but I'm not saying
- 28:07this is bad. I think it's good.
- 28:09I was entertained. I do genuinely love the
- 28:11animation, the the music, the score of it as well.
- 28:16Not even just the yeah and in at the start of it, the AMV thing
- 28:21that was on and the world as well is amazing.
- 28:26And on paper I think the story could be amazing, but it kind of
- 28:30just it needs that little bit more to be amazing for me.
- 28:36Want to be above a three? You want a character that you
- 28:39can match into that isn't a tree.
- 28:42That has a bit of personality, as I was saying, I know I'm
- 28:45going to. He's trying to stop the end of
- 28:47the world, but he didn't know the world was ended until the
- 28:49other end. He's not just trying to stop the
- 28:53end of the world, he's also trying to help Tula.
- 28:56He said 3 words to her like. Naked Chris.
- 29:02He didn't. She was wearing a hospital girl.
- 29:06There was. There was barely a nip.
- 29:10I think they just didn't draw the nipples, but I think she's
- 29:12full blown naked, isn't she? Is she?
- 29:15I think so. We'll have to watch it back.
- 29:18The weird little druid people like the weird little tree
- 29:21people who appear in the. Forest as well, yeah.
- 29:24We didn't even talk about that weirdness, but I also love that
- 29:28as well when they like when he goes into the forest to get his
- 29:31power. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:33Which was? The creepy tree twins.
- 29:36That was very sudden as well and the way you would talk about the
- 29:39power as well, where it eventually turns you into a tree
- 29:42because it overcomes you. I did.
- 29:44I thought, I didn't think it was that.
- 29:46I thought while I was watching this it was if you overuse the
- 29:50power then it takes over here because the old woman was just
- 29:54like talking about Oh yes, you need to learn to calm yourself
- 29:58and pitch your hand as a normal hand and then you can return
- 30:03back to normal. So it destroys.
- 30:06So if you don't stay calm, it destroys you like it kills you.
- 30:11So that that's the emotional thing.
- 30:13But eventually what they're saying, and because it's because
- 30:16his dad used it more than anyone else who used their tree power,
- 30:19the more you use it, the more of a tree you become.
- 30:22Because he used the power to collect build the town,
- 30:26essentially. Yeah.
- 30:30I thought it was. I thought it was cool.
- 30:31I would give this a solid 4. Like I don't think it's like the
- 30:36perfect film by any stretch of the means what it is, but I
- 30:40think it's like it's high quality enough that I think it
- 30:43deserves A4. I'd like to see different
- 30:45characters. I'd like to see a bit more of
- 30:48the characters, but that's because I'm enjoying the film
- 30:51while I'm watching it. And also, how did Tula end up in
- 30:54that cryopod and how did Kane end up in there?
- 30:58Well, Tula gets put in there by her father and Kane goes in
- 31:03there because he's one of the scientists who works so on the
- 31:07moon, on the moon. So he's the he is the scientist
- 31:11who who released the tree. So, and what the scientist say,
- 31:17what Doctor Sackler decides is that he's going to put P like so
- 31:25all like all of the people who go into the stasis pods are but
- 31:32the people who might be able to save the earth and, and, and his
- 31:38daughter because he loves his daughter, but that's why.
- 31:40And his daughter is the only one who can access the controls
- 31:44because she's got the same DNA as him.
- 31:48Right. So he and because when she
- 31:54because when she first wakes up, she's like, no, don't put like
- 31:57she's like don't leave me. And it's because her father has
- 32:00put her in the stasis pod and left her.
- 32:03To go and genuinely can't remember that part.
- 32:07Yeah. Can't remember because that was
- 32:11a question I had Afterwards I was like so how does he get from
- 32:15the moon to the earth? So I'm guessing that you went up
- 32:17the escape pod and just crashed there?
- 32:21Yeah, and I think he sees like ships coming down to like racing
- 32:26the the the forest down or trying to like shoot them down
- 32:29and stuff. So I miss always assumed he was
- 32:31in one of those. And also that because the the
- 32:36big, the big final plan to reset the world and kill everything so
- 32:41it can start on you is basically a moving might mountain with
- 32:45spider legs or moving volcano with spider spider legs.
- 32:49And did he make that before or after the plant got loose?
- 32:54I assume he made it before because it feels like a control
- 32:57tower or like a villain base for all of his experiments.
- 33:04But also my lovely and very logical boyfriend did point out
- 33:12how is that volcano moving? That's not how volcanoes work.
- 33:16Like the fact that it's got lava in it, but it's also walking.
- 33:20Although it did make us both want to watch the Wild Wild West
- 33:23film again. That's what I thought, yeah.
- 33:26The Spider. Because it does have it does
- 33:28have elements of like cyberpunky steam punky energy in it this
- 33:32film and that's also quite fun. Although the giant robots that
- 33:36are fighting at the end, they could be better.
- 33:38It doesn't have the best giant robot battles that I've ever
- 33:41seen, and this is what I think stops it from being a 5.
- 33:45It's a really good film. I can think of three other films
- 33:49that do stuff that this film does slightly better.
- 33:53So if you like one of them is Norsica Valley of the Wind.
- 33:56If you want like a humans at war with a forest and trying to like
- 34:00find peace only to discover that the forest is on the human side
- 34:04and trying to correct a mistake the humans have made, that's
- 34:07Norsica Valley of the Wind. If you want giant robots, Gundam
- 34:11Wing. Endless Waltz and if you want
- 34:16weird nature druidy stuff with and people with magic powers and
- 34:22white hair, Mushishi. See, I was going to say
- 34:28Mononoke. Also Princess Mononoke.
- 34:32Yeah, talk about two 2 tribes, one living at peace with the
- 34:35world, one at war with nature. So like, it's a really solid
- 34:41film. There are other anime films that
- 34:43maybe do what it does better, but I don't think that detracts
- 34:46from the fact that I would definitely and have recommended
- 34:48this film since I watched it to other people.
- 34:51Yeah, to me. Yeah, to you and to a bunch of
- 34:56other people who I'm hoping also enjoy it.
- 35:01Sure, it reminded me of when I was watching it as well.
- 35:04What Steamboy? There is a touch of the Steam
- 35:09Boy to it. I think it's the, the really
- 35:12detailed background and it's, I don't know, I don't know what it
- 35:17is about it. It just feels like a kind of
- 35:22Sunday afternoon kind of watch. Do you know what other films
- 35:28came out? So this is this is not films but
- 35:30series, other animes that came out around this time. 2000 and
- 35:37six, 2006. Let's play a little game before
- 35:41we pick next week's anime. Shippuden no.
- 35:48Full Metal Alchemist? No.
- 35:55OK, you get after you have to tell us, I think.
- 35:59So code geese. Right.
- 36:02Absolution of the rebellion definite it came out 2006 Black
- 36:09Lagoon Talk about giant robots fighting fate stay night Helsing
- 36:14ultimate. Right.
- 36:17The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which is a weirdly good film.
- 36:21That's a good film. Second King Crete Paprika done
- 36:27both of those on Anime Club Crayon Shinchan, right?
- 36:33I didn't know there was a Shin Chan film until right now.
- 36:36That's going on our list for future, yeah.
- 36:39I mean, Shin Chan's been around for longer than me.
- 36:43Do you know what, Shin Chan? It's not always the the.
- 36:47I mean, sometimes it's a bit weird because the grandpa's so
- 36:50pervy and Shin Chan's kind of weirdly pervy.
- 36:53But yeah, if putting that aside, Shin Chan, what a shout.
- 36:58We had squiggly line animation. Yeah, Digimon Savers and Naruto
- 37:04the movie Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom.
- 37:07Can we do? Digimon at some point.
- 37:09Yeah, we can do Digimon at some point.
- 37:12I've also been recommended a Korean anime that looks good
- 37:15called 7 Scissors or something so we can watch that too.
- 37:22Right. We'll add stuff to the list, but
- 37:27with that, with that being said, what do you want to do next
- 37:30week? Because it's it's my choice,
- 37:32isn't it? It's your choice.
- 37:35It's my choice. My choice.
- 37:36Well, I've obviously I've already told you what it is
- 37:39before this. Yeah, of course, but.
- 37:40I'm just lining you up and I'm really excited.
- 37:44So I decided on bleach next next week that that was the reason.
- 37:55Why no One of the best. ITunes.
- 38:01Of all anime time. The other day and one of the
- 38:06other episodes, we'll talk about the golden age of of openings.
- 38:09And you said that and I said, Oh yeah, Bleach.
- 38:12I haven't, I haven't seen or thought about that in so long.
- 38:18Because then it wasn't 1000 Blood War or something came out
- 38:22the other year. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it did.
- 38:26Because I just, I just remember loads of people buzzing about
- 38:29Kenpachi and he's bankai. I'm like, oh, that dude, I love
- 38:37him. He's the he's the best
- 38:39character. He's But then I love the weird
- 38:42like lone wolf hard nut. But he's also a weird lone wolf
- 38:47hard nut who somehow has acquired a tiny pink psychopath
- 38:50sidekick because she's quiet. Yeah, she's acquired him.
- 38:56You're right. The the thing I love about
- 38:59Bleach is that it's like, it's got so many good characters in
- 39:03it. It's a proper ensemble anime.
- 39:06And every single one of the like, what are they called?
- 39:12The different teams in the Soul Society like have like a very
- 39:18unique captain and Lieutenant and there's like a story behind
- 39:22how they came to like be in charge and.
- 39:24Yes, yes. And I can't wait and I will
- 39:27also. Are we allowed to reveal sunny
- 39:30con choice like choices or are we keeping those secret for
- 39:33close to the time? You can see whatever you want
- 39:35and just just know this. I'm never going to tell you what
- 39:38Lee's cosplaying us. This is unfair because usually
- 39:45Chris is super loose lip sync ships like you can't trust him
- 39:50with a secret, but for some reason this is just the hill
- 39:53that you've decided to die on. Because I know it's going to be
- 39:56better that you don't know. Yeah, OK.
- 40:01When he comes to stepping out the crowd.
- 40:03Sorry, I didn't mean to say that.
- 40:05No, it's not. Hitler, Hitler from Dragon, the
- 40:10Dragon Ball film. So I will be picking a
- 40:16character. I'm, I'll tell you this, I will
- 40:18be picking a character from Bleach to cosplayers at
- 40:21Sunnycon. Bleach being one of my all time
- 40:24favorite animes. And go and check out our
- 40:30Instagram closer to the time for pictures of both Chris and I.
- 40:34You can find out in June and we might be dropping hints in the
- 40:38lead up to it as well. Just post it back.
- 40:43Oh have you full on just go check out Anime Club.
- 40:46Not on that I've posted on the discord.
- 40:48Oh, have you? Yeah.
- 40:49Fair. Yeah, because Chris is.
- 40:51Chris's cosplay, I can safely say is going to be one of the
- 40:54best things I've ever seen. It looks so far, when you've
- 40:58done like little tests of it, it looks amazing.
- 41:02Hopefully, fingers crossed. Sonicons always a very high St.
- 41:07James's Park, which is a place where I tell it's always like a
- 41:09greenhouse because it's glass walled.
- 41:11Yeah. So the less clothes the better.
- 41:13And I'm wearing many clothes, yeah.
- 41:16You're wearing many clothes and like stuff on your face.
- 41:20I've also got a potentially 2 wigs, like 2-1 wig stacked on
- 41:25top of another wig. It's going to, we're going to be
- 41:29sweating our asses off. And it's also in June, in like
- 41:32the middle of the summer, which for some reason, like last year
- 41:37was so hot and I was walking around in like shorts and a vest
- 41:40top. It it is every silly con.
- 41:43It's horrible. Oh yeah.
- 41:45I've just realized for us, we can, we can talk about the, the
- 41:49music of bleach wets, the the rock opera thing.
- 41:52Do you know what I mean? Like.
- 41:53Whoa, whoa, whoa. Ah, that.
- 41:58Yeah. And every time they, every time.
- 42:00They level up. There's and there's one where
- 42:04they're like literally translate it and do it in English and
- 42:07they're like fine. A chicken or something like that
- 42:10is so funny. Yeah, I thought it was weird
- 42:15when I first heard it and it's grown on is like mad.
- 42:19Oh, it's like, it is weird and it's really jarring the first
- 42:23time you hear it because you're like, this is terrible.
- 42:25Oh, that's it. You kind of find the big
- 42:28attraction. Yeah.
- 42:30The action. It's so good.
- 42:35Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I can't wait.
- 42:39I'm excited. It'll be good.
- 42:40So TuneIn next week and then the week after, we're going to be
- 42:43digging into the archives and pulling out.
- 42:46And we're allowed to talk about that now because, I mean, we've
- 42:48kind of already planned it. The week after, we're going to
- 42:51be digging into the archives and pulling out the vending machine
- 42:55anime. That surprised both Chris and I
- 42:57because after that we're going to be watching Season 2 because
- 43:02you revealed last week that it is out and I'm very excited and
- 43:08it's been out for like a year. And they've also got Season 3
- 43:11has just started as well. So we've got some catching up to
- 43:13do, Buddies. Yeah, I mean, I mean, it gives
- 43:15us a chance to watch the full series and not do and not just
- 43:19do the three episodes because we're like it.
- 43:21Exactly. We should do that with Kaiju #8
- 43:24as well at some point because I still haven't seen that season
- 43:262. Have you not?
- 43:29And it starts with, you know, you're Hashino, the guy with the
- 43:32double swords. Yeah.
- 43:33You really like, it starts with like a Hashino's Day Out where
- 43:38they're like like honestly Chris, you're going to love the
- 43:40first episode of Season 2. It's really fun.
- 43:43See, I really want to watch it, right?
- 43:45But at the minute I've, I've just watched like six, nearly
- 43:50600 episodes of One Piece. And I'm like, that's all I can
- 43:54watch at the minute because I'm doing a series of well behind
- 43:57and recording it, but while still doing it.
- 43:59And it's just like, I'm up to like the Fishman Island one at
- 44:03the minute. And I'm like, Oh yeah, I've
- 44:05watched Lords how far my way through.
- 44:07And they say, oh, nearly 1/3 of the way there.
- 44:09Don't worry. 1/3 of the way through the whole anime, or the
- 44:14third of the way through this particular arc?
- 44:16Because it could. No, no, the whole, a whole lot
- 44:19of way. I mean, I'm still loving it, but
- 44:22it's it's a commitment. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:29I mean, I'm surprised you're still sticking with it to be
- 44:31honest, because I would have thought that you guys would have
- 44:37your attention spans and all that.
- 44:38The will will of the day in it. Oh, want to rephrase that?
- 44:51Fair enough. And on that note, thank you so
- 44:53much for joining us. We'll catch you next week when
- 44:56we will be doing bleach. Bye bye.
