- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's the 23rd of February, it's
- 0:16Monday and so good to have your company.
- 0:19You are listening to Tasmania's very newest, along with a couple
- 0:24of others priests in the Anglican Church.
- 0:27Yep, it was a pretty fantastic weekend.
- 0:30We got ourselves ordained as priests and yeah, it has been
- 0:34absolutely amazing. You know how when you've been on
- 0:36a journey and it's been quite a personal journey, and then all
- 0:40of a sudden it becomes very public and everyone comes out in
- 0:43support of you and affirmation and blessing and sending forth?
- 0:48Yeah, it was one of those moments and pretty darn special.
- 0:52So I am feeling all loved up and so excited that you and I get to
- 0:57keep going on our little journey here.
- 0:58And this week we will do what we do and we will be continuing to
- 1:02read through the book of Hosea. And last week was interesting as
- 1:08a kind of set up the scene with Hosea marrying this prostitute
- 1:12and having these children. And they are kind of named about
- 1:16these these parallels that are happening with God's people.
- 1:20Well, unfortunately, the four chapters that we're going to
- 1:22tackle this week are part of the book that theological scholars
- 1:26call judgement destruction and exile.
- 1:31Yeah, it's pretty dire. And if you know anything about
- 1:34the history of Israel, you know that the northern Kingdom of
- 1:37Israel does not listen to what Hosea asks and does not repent
- 1:41and turn away from their their Baal worship.
- 1:45And so God does exact this judgement through the Assyrian
- 1:49Empire and they are decimated as a people.
- 1:52So we get front row seats watching that all unfold.
- 1:57So I think it's time we are going to continue on this
- 2:01journey as we read together Hosea chapter 5.
- 2:14Hear this, you priests, pay attention.
- 2:17You leaders of Israel, listen, you members of the royal family.
- 2:21Judgement has been handed down against you, for you have led
- 2:25the people into a snare by worshipping the idols at Mizpah
- 2:29and Table. You have dug a deep pit to trap
- 2:33them at Acacia Grove. But I will settle with you for
- 2:36what you have done. I know what you are like, O
- 2:39Ephraim. You cannot hide yourself from
- 2:41me. O Israel, You have left me as a
- 2:44prostitute leaves her husband. You are utterly defiled.
- 2:49Your deeds won't let you return to your God.
- 2:52You're a prostitute through and through, and you do not know the
- 2:56Lord. The arrogance of Israel
- 2:58testifies against her. Israel and Ephraim will stumble
- 3:02under their load of guilt. Judah 2 will fall with them when
- 3:07they come with their flocks and herds to offer sacrifices to the
- 3:10Lord. They will not find him because
- 3:13He has withdrawn from them. They have betrayed the honour of
- 3:17the Lord, bearing children that are not His.
- 3:20Now their false religion will devour them along with their
- 3:23wealth. Sound the alarms in Gibeah, blow
- 3:27the trumpets and Rama, Raise the battle cry in Beth Avon.
- 3:31Lead on into battle. O warriors of Benjamin, one
- 3:35thing is certain. Israel, on your day of
- 3:37punishment you will become a heap of rubble.
- 3:42The leaders of Judah have become like thieves, so I will pour my
- 3:46anger on them like a waterfall. The people of Israel will be
- 3:51crushed and broken by my judgement because they are
- 3:54determined to worship idols. I will destroy Israel as a moth
- 3:59consumes wool. I will make Judah as weak as
- 4:03rotten wood. When Israel and Judah saw how
- 4:07sick they were, Israel turned to Assyria, to the great king
- 4:11there, but he could neither help nor cure them.
- 4:15I will be like a lion to Israel, like a strong young lion to
- 4:20Judah. I will tear them to pieces.
- 4:22I will carry them off, and no one will be left to rescue them.
- 4:27Then I will return to my place until they admit their guilt and
- 4:31turn to me, for as soon as trouble comes, they will
- 4:35earnestly search for me. Our Lord, as we read this, it
- 4:50does sound dire and it does sound hopeless.
- 4:54And Lord, we know that much of our human condition is dire and
- 4:58hopeless. And Lord, at the end you say
- 5:02that as soon as trouble comes, you know that your people will
- 5:05search for you. Lord, I pray that our hearts
- 5:09would not wait for trouble to come, but that each day in the
- 5:13good, in the dull, and in the bad, that we would search for
- 5:17You. That it would be you that we
- 5:19lean on when our days begin. That would be you that we lean
- 5:24on when our days are going just fine.
- 5:27And that would indeed be you that we lean on when we find
- 5:30ourselves in strife. Because You are our loving God
- 5:34and You stand poised, ready to help, ready to rescue, ready to
- 5:39support, and ready to journey beside us.
- 5:44Our Lord, thank you for your faithfulness to us.
- 5:47Thank you for your unending love, Your gracious mercy, your
- 5:52patience, and most of all for your Son.
- 5:58Thank you that you give us Jesus and that through him you give us
- 6:03a way to come before you, holy and perfect in your eyes, able
- 6:09to be in your perfect company. Ah, so we praised you and we
- 6:13thank you for all that you've done for us and all that you
- 6:15are. We pray this in Jesus loving
- 6:18name, Amen.
