Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Pamoja Ministry. There comes a moment
- 0:06when you begin looking backward over your life
- 0:08differently. You remember people. Some loved
- 0:12you. Some believed in you. Some opened doors
- 0:16for you. Some carried you through difficult seasons.
- 0:20Some taught you. Some corrected you. Some disappointed
- 0:23you. Some betrayed you. Some made you cry. Some
- 0:28made you pray. Some walked beside you for years.
- 0:32Others appeared for only a moment. And sometimes,
- 0:36years later, you begin to recognize something
- 0:39you could not see while you were living through
- 0:43it. God was working through relationships too.
- 0:46Not because everything people did was God's will.
- 0:50Not because everyone who hurt you was sent by
- 0:54God. Not because betrayal suddenly becomes good.
- 0:58because something good eventually came from it,
- 1:02but because when your life belongs to God, no
- 1:05human encounter is beyond his ability to redeem
- 1:09and use, and perhaps some of the people you remember
- 1:13only by what they did to you need to be reconsidered
- 1:17through the larger story of what God was doing
- 1:20in you. Today we are talking about the people
- 1:24God uses in your process. Joseph's story is filled
- 1:30with people. When we think about Joseph, we often
- 1:34think about Joseph and God. Joseph received the
- 1:38dream. Joseph entered the pit. Joseph became
- 1:41a slave. Joseph entered prison. Joseph eventually
- 1:45reached Pharaoh's palace. But look more carefully.
- 1:49Joseph's journey was filled with people. Jacob
- 1:53loved him. His brothers hated him. The Midianite
- 1:56traders transported him. Potiphar purchased him.
- 2:00Potiphar's wife falsely accused him. The prison
- 2:04keeper trusted him. The cup bearer forgot him.
- 2:08Pharaoh eventually promoted him. Different people.
- 2:12Different motives. Different seasons. Different
- 2:16effects. But one story. And this is where Providence
- 2:21becomes mysterious. because some people were
- 2:24helping Joseph intentionally. Others were hurting
- 2:28him intentionally. Yet God remained sovereign
- 2:31over where the story was going. Joseph's brothers
- 2:35never said, let us help Joseph fulfill his dream.
- 2:40They wanted the opposite. They saw him coming
- 2:43and said, essentially, let's see what becomes
- 2:47of his dreams. They believed removing Joseph
- 2:52would remove the dream, but their actions eventually
- 2:55moved Joseph toward the geographical location
- 2:59where the dream would unfold. Think about that.
- 3:03They were fighting what they did not realize
- 3:06they were helping position. That does not make
- 3:09their betrayal righteous. Their intentions were
- 3:13evil. Joseph himself eventually tells them, you
- 3:17meant evil against me. but God meant it for good.
- 3:22Human intention and divine providence were operating
- 3:25in the same story, but they were not morally
- 3:28the same thing. They meant evil. God produced
- 3:32good. Some people will bless you. There are people
- 3:38God allows to enter our lives whose role is obvious.
- 3:42They encourage us. They believe in us. They pray
- 3:46for us. They support us. They correct us with
- 3:49love. They stand beside us when everybody else
- 3:53disappears. Paul had Barnabas. David had Jonathan.
- 3:57Moses had Aaron and Her. Ruth had Naomi. Timothy
- 4:02had Paul. There are seasons when God answers
- 4:05prayers through people. You pray, God, help me.
- 4:10And God sends someone who says, how can I help?
- 4:13You pray, God, encourage me. and someone's phone
- 4:17call arrives at exactly the right moment. You
- 4:21pray for direction and someone says something
- 4:23they may not even realize God will use. You are
- 4:27exhausted and someone helps carry the weight.
- 4:30Never become so spiritual that you fail to recognize
- 4:35when God's provision arrives wearing a human
- 4:38face. Sometimes the miracle is a person. Some
- 4:44people will correct you. Then there are people
- 4:47whose role is less comfortable. They tell you
- 4:50something you do not want to hear. Nathan stood
- 4:54before David. David was king. Nathan could have
- 4:58remained silent. But Nathan said, you are the
- 5:01man. Correction became part of David's refining
- 5:05process. We often pray, God, show me what is
- 5:10wrong. Then God uses someone to show us. and
- 5:14we become angry with the person. Sometimes the
- 5:18answer to your prayer for growth arrives as correction.
- 5:22That does not mean every criticism is from God.
- 5:25People can criticize from jealousy, misunderstanding,
- 5:30insecurity, or their own wounds. That is why
- 5:34discernment matters. But neither should we reject
- 5:38every uncomfortable voice simply because it makes
- 5:41us uncomfortable. Sometimes God places someone
- 5:45close enough to us to see what applause has prevented
- 5:49us from seeing. A wise person learns to ask,
- 5:54God, even if I dislike how this was said, is
- 5:58there something here you want me to examine?
- 6:01That is maturity. Some people will make you pray.
- 6:07then there are people you probably would never
- 6:09have selected for your story. Difficult people.
- 6:13Opposition. People who misunderstand you. People
- 6:16who challenge your patience. People whose behavior
- 6:19drives you back into the presence of God. And
- 6:23again, we need theological maturity. Do not automatically
- 6:27say, God sent this person to torment me. We do
- 6:32not know that. But we can say, God. Since this
- 6:36person is in this chapter of my life, do not
- 6:39allow this experience to be wasted. Maybe their
- 6:43behavior exposes your anger. Maybe their criticism
- 6:47exposes your insecurity. Maybe their opposition
- 6:51strengthens your prayer life. Maybe dealing with
- 6:54them teaches you boundaries. Maybe their dishonesty
- 6:57teaches you discernment. Maybe their rejection
- 7:01teaches you that your identity cannot depend
- 7:04upon human approval. Maybe their pressure teaches
- 7:08you how to remain peaceful without controlling
- 7:11everybody around you. You may never thank God
- 7:15for what somebody did wrong, but one day you
- 7:18may thank Him for what He developed in you while
- 7:22you were dealing with it. Some people teach you
- 7:27what not to become. Not every teacher teaches
- 7:31by example. Some people teach by warning you
- 7:35encounter a leader who humiliates people and
- 7:38you learn if God ever gives me authority I don't
- 7:42want to lead like that You experience someone's
- 7:45dishonesty and you decide I want integrity to
- 7:50define me You experience abandonment and it makes
- 7:54you more sensitive to people who feel forgotten
- 7:57You experience harshness and it develops compassion
- 8:02You experience betrayal. And after healing, you
- 8:06understand why loyalty matters. Sometimes somebody
- 8:11else's character becomes a mirror showing you
- 8:13the kind of person you refuse to become. Even
- 8:18that can become part of refinement. Some people
- 8:22are for a season. This may be difficult for some
- 8:26of us. We sometimes assume that because someone
- 8:30was important in one chapter, they must remain
- 8:33equally important in every chapter. But scripture
- 8:37shows relationships changing across seasons.
- 8:41There are people who help you in one place, but
- 8:43cannot accompany you everywhere. That does not
- 8:47always mean somebody did something wrong. Sometimes
- 8:51assignments change, geography changes, responsibilities
- 8:55change, capacity changes, life changes. Paul
- 9:00and Barnabas ministered together powerfully,
- 9:03yet later separated after serious disagreement.
- 9:07Their separation was painful enough that scripture
- 9:10records it, yet ministry continued. Barnabas
- 9:14went with Mark. Paul went with Silas. And later,
- 9:18Paul himself would speak positively about Mark.
- 9:22The story continued. Sometimes a relationship
- 9:26changes without requiring us to rewrite the entire
- 9:30relationship as a mistake. Something can have
- 9:33been meaningful and still have been seasonal.
- 9:37That is important. You do not have to demonize
- 9:40someone simply because the season changed. You
- 9:44can honor what was good without forcing what
- 9:47has ended. Don't force people to remain in a
- 9:52chapter God has closed. Sometimes we spend enormous
- 9:57emotional energy trying to keep people in positions
- 10:00they no longer occupy. We keep reopening conversations,
- 10:05revisiting old relationships, trying to recreate
- 10:08old seasons, trying to force yesterday's connection
- 10:12into today's assignment. But refinement sometimes
- 10:16includes learning to release, not in anger, not
- 10:20in bitterness. Not through public humiliation,
- 10:24but with maturity. Thank God for what was good.
- 10:28Learn from what was painful. Forgive what needs
- 10:31forgiveness. Take responsibility for what was
- 10:35yours. And continue walking. Because sometimes
- 10:39the problem is not that somebody left. The problem
- 10:42is that emotionally, you never allowed them to
- 10:45leave. Some people introduce you to the next
- 10:50room. Then there are relationships that appear
- 10:54small when they begin but become significant
- 10:57later Joseph met the cup bearer in prison at
- 11:01the time. He was simply another prisoner Joseph
- 11:05interpreted his dream the cup bearer was restored
- 11:09Then he forgot Joseph two more years passed Imagine
- 11:14Joseph's disappointment the person who could
- 11:17have helped him forgot him But when Pharaoh dreamed
- 11:21and nobody could interpret it, the cup bearer
- 11:23remembered. One relationship, one conversation,
- 11:28one interpretation. Years later, a door opened.
- 11:33You don't always know which encounter will matter
- 11:36later. That is why we should treat people with
- 11:39dignity, even when we cannot see what role they
- 11:43may have in our future. Not because we manipulate
- 11:47relationships for advancement. but because God
- 11:50connects stories in ways we cannot predict. And
- 11:55some people will forget you. This deserves attention.
- 12:00The cup bearer forgot Joseph, and perhaps Joseph
- 12:04thought, this was my opportunity. But Joseph's
- 12:08promotion did not depend ultimately upon the
- 12:11cup bearer's memory. When the appointed moment
- 12:14came, the memory returned. Sometimes we become
- 12:18frustrated because somebody who could help us
- 12:21does not help us. They forgot. They moved on.
- 12:25They didn't make the call. They didn't recommend
- 12:29us. They didn't open the door. But if God has
- 12:33attached purpose to your life, your future is
- 12:36not imprisoned inside another person's willingness
- 12:40to remember you. People can forget you. God does
- 12:44not. And when the right moment arrives, God knows
- 12:48how to bring your name into rooms you cannot
- 12:51enter by yourself. Remember this principle. Don't
- 12:56build your purpose around people. This is where
- 12:59balance becomes necessary. People matter. Relationships
- 13:04matter. Community matters. Mentorship matters.
- 13:08Family matters. Friendship matters. But people
- 13:12are not God. Do not make somebody so important
- 13:15to your future that their departure convinces
- 13:18you your purpose departed with them. Joseph's
- 13:22brothers could not cancel his dream. Potiphar's
- 13:26wife could not cancel his dream. The prison could
- 13:29not cancel his dream. The cup bearer's forgetfulness
- 13:34could not cancel his dream. Because the dream
- 13:38did not originate with them. What people did
- 13:41not give you People do not have ultimate authority
- 13:45to take away from you. If God entrusted the purpose,
- 13:50remain faithful to God. But there is another
- 13:54side. Be careful who you give access to. Not
- 13:58everybody should have equal access to your life.
- 14:01We learned in conversation five. Bad company
- 14:05can water bad seeds. First, Corinthians 1533.
- 14:09warns that bad company corrupts good character.
- 14:14Jesus loved everybody. But Jesus did not give
- 14:18everybody the same level of access. There were
- 14:22crowds. There were disciples. There were the
- 14:25twelve. And there were moments when Peter, James,
- 14:28and John were brought even closer. Love can be
- 14:33universal. Access should be discerning. You can
- 14:38forgive someone without restoring the same level
- 14:41of access. You can love someone without allowing
- 14:45them to influence your decisions. You can pray
- 14:48for someone without making them your counselor.
- 14:52You can wish someone well without bringing them
- 14:55back into a place where they repeatedly weakened
- 14:58your boundaries. Refinement includes learning
- 15:02who can speak into your life. Maybe instead of
- 15:07asking only, do I like this person? Ask, what
- 15:11does this relationship produce in me? Does it
- 15:14strengthen my faith? Does it encourage integrity?
- 15:18Does it respect my marriage? Does it strengthen
- 15:22my discipline? Does it challenge me toward purpose?
- 15:26Can this person correct me? Can I tell them the
- 15:30truth? Can they tell me the truth? Or does this
- 15:34relationship continually normalize compromise,
- 15:38feed resentment, encourage gossip, weaken boundaries,
- 15:42increase secrecy, pull me away from prayer, make
- 15:46disobedience easier, relationships are seeds
- 15:49too, and relationships produce harvests. God
- 15:54may use people without allowing them to stay.
- 15:58Here is something else we need to understand.
- 16:01Someone can be important to your process without
- 16:04being permanent in your life. The person who
- 16:08helped you through one valley may not be assigned
- 16:11to your next mountain. The person who introduced
- 16:14you to something may not be the person who helps
- 16:17you build it. The person who taught you one lesson
- 16:21may not remain for the entire journey. And sometimes
- 16:26we dishonor a season because we demand permanence
- 16:29from something God used temporarily. Instead,
- 16:34learn to say, Thank you, God, for what this relationship
- 16:38produced during its season. And when appropriate,
- 16:42release it peacefully. A question remains. What
- 16:46about the people who hurt you? Now we arrive
- 16:51at the hardest category. What about betrayal?
- 16:54What about false accusation? What about rejection?
- 16:59What about somebody who intentionally tried to
- 17:02harm you? Joseph eventually stood before the
- 17:05brothers who sold him. He now possessed authority.
- 17:09He could retaliate. He could imprison them. He
- 17:13could humiliate them. Instead, Joseph had developed
- 17:17enough perspective to say, you meant evil against
- 17:21me, but God meant it for good. Notice what Joseph
- 17:25did not say. He did not say, what you did was
- 17:30good. He called it evil. But he also understood
- 17:34something greater. Their intention did not determine
- 17:37his ending. That is freedom. When you can acknowledge
- 17:41what happened without allowing what happened
- 17:44to become the final interpretation of your life.
- 17:48They may have meant harm, but they do not own
- 17:52the conclusion. Don't give your enemies too much
- 17:56credit. Sometimes we talk more about what enemies
- 18:00are doing than what God is doing. The enemy blocked
- 18:03me. The enemy attacked me. The enemy delayed
- 18:07me. The enemy sent this person. The enemy closed
- 18:11this door. And eventually our theology makes
- 18:14the enemy sound almost sovereign. He isn't. Joseph's
- 18:20brothers had intentions. Potiphar's wife had
- 18:23intentions. The cup bearer had failures. But
- 18:27above all of those human decisions stood the
- 18:30providence of God. This doesn't mean God approved
- 18:33their actions. It means their actions were incapable
- 18:37of overthrowing his redemptive purpose. That
- 18:41is a very different kind of confidence. Maybe
- 18:46you don't understand their role yet. Some relationships
- 18:50only make sense later. Joseph could not fully
- 18:54interpret his brother from inside the pit. He
- 18:57could not fully interpret Potiphar's house from
- 19:00inside the prison. He could not fully interpret
- 19:04the cupbearer's forgetfulness during those additional
- 19:07years of waiting. But eventually, perspective
- 19:11changed, and maybe there are people in your story
- 19:15you cannot interpret yet. Don't rush. Don't make
- 19:19permanent theological conclusions from temporary
- 19:22pain. You may not know yet what God is producing.
- 19:27You may not know what this relationship is teaching
- 19:30you. You may not know what boundary is being
- 19:34developed. You may not know what prayer life
- 19:37is being born. You may not know what discernment
- 19:41is being sharpened. You may not know what future
- 19:45person will benefit from what you are learning
- 19:48today. You are still inside the chapter. This
- 19:54principle remains true. God uses people, but
- 19:58God remains the source. So appreciate the people
- 20:02who bless you. Honor the people who support you.
- 20:06Listen to wise correction. Forgive those who
- 20:09hurt you. establish boundaries where necessary,
- 20:13release relationships whose seasons have ended,
- 20:17learn from difficult people, and remain open
- 20:20to the new people God may bring into your life.
- 20:24But never confuse the instrument with the source.
- 20:28People can help you. God is your source. People
- 20:32can encourage you. God is your source. People
- 20:35can open doors. God is your source. People can
- 20:39recommend you God is your source People can forget
- 20:43you God is still your source People can walk
- 20:47away God is still your source People can misunderstand
- 20:51you God is still your source People can even
- 20:55intentionally oppose you God remains your source
- 21:01You have been refined through relationships Maybe
- 21:06some of the greatest refining fires of your life
- 21:08came through people. They exposed your impatience.
- 21:13They exposed your need for approval. They exposed
- 21:17your anger. They exposed your fear of rejection.
- 21:22They exposed your inability to establish boundaries.
- 21:25They exposed your tendency to retaliate. But
- 21:29perhaps God is using those experiences to produce
- 21:33something different now. wisdom, discernment,
- 21:37boundaries, forgiveness, patience, humility,
- 21:41compassion, dependence upon Him. You cannot always
- 21:45choose who enters the story. But by the grace
- 21:49of God, you can choose what the experience produces
- 21:53in you. So don't waste the relationship. Don't
- 21:56waste the disappointment. Don't waste the correction.
- 22:00Don't waste the encouragement. Don't waste the
- 22:03betrayal. Don't waste the support. Don't waste
- 22:07the lesson. Bring all of it before God and ask,
- 22:11God, what are you teaching me through this? Because
- 22:15some people will bless you. Some will correct
- 22:17you. Some will challenge you. Some will make
- 22:21you pray. Some will teach you boundaries. Some
- 22:25will introduce you to another room. Some will
- 22:29stay. Some will leave. but none of them possess
- 22:33final authority over your purpose. God does.
- 22:37And when your life is surrendered to Him, He
- 22:40is able to take even the relationships you did
- 22:44not understand and weave their lessons into the
- 22:47person you are becoming. You are learning. You
- 22:51are discerning. You are forgiving. You are establishing
- 22:55boundaries. You are becoming wiser about access.
- 22:59You are becoming less dependent upon human approval.
- 23:03You are becoming more dependent upon God. You
- 23:07are being refined for a purpose. This is Pomoja
- 23:11Ministry. And in our next conversation, we will
- 23:14discover that sometimes God does not only use
- 23:17people to move us. Sometimes he uses discomfort.
- 23:22Because there are places we would remain forever
- 23:25if staying there continued to feel comfortable.
