- 3:08Valentine. George Valantine esquire Now you, sir, I would do it a
- 3:23great favorish can fatigue this afternoon? It's insiety. I've been read to believe
- 3:27that you were the kind of man who would interest himself who's about your studing,
- 3:30of course, in the problems such as night id which is not even
- 3:37considered as such. I made which has long since been forgotten by everyone except
- 3:42hers. Very truly, Misspelicity Graham. M that's quite a line. He
- 3:46got points of gentility and murder had made that once you used to write letters,
- 3:50it sounded like this, hen she was only asking the milkman's leave an
- 3:53extra bottle of cream. Honesty, M forty fine Burlington Terrace. I know
- 3:58that neighborhood ancestral stones, with every room like a set out of ice,
- 4:01and I can always in every closet with a family skeleton and know what to
- 4:04me obously. I don't know about you, but I find myself rather impatient
- 4:08to have tea with anyone named Felicity any more tea for anyone. I'm actually
- 4:26the leaves. Excuse us, Paul, I'd like to speak to this books
- 4:29and mister Valentine in private. Well, I thought you trusted me completely,
- 4:31Felicity, but everything, Please, Paul, You've been so sweet and patient
- 4:35all these years. They're with me a little longer what I'd always think.
- 4:40I oh, whatever you say, whatever you wish, my best friend,
- 4:46my only faithful suitor. H. You are later referred to a murder of
- 4:50mis Graham I'm ready, which took place from fifteen years ago. Until it's
- 4:56solved, I'm afraid I can't find any deacon happiness in my own life.
- 5:00Miss Graham, I think you'd better give mister Valentine all the facts from the
- 5:03beginning. Well, there was only one person who was close to me in
- 5:08the whole world, my cousin Laura. We became Robin's about the same time.
- 5:13For years we were inseparable, and then she got at it, and
- 5:17it's kind mounted her and he's off somewhere grinning. Bought it right now.
- 5:23I was grim. If what you say is through this sounds like a case
- 5:26for the police. Was the police They considered me their person will cross to
- 5:30bear. We've been listening to my story for the past fifteen years, the
- 5:34kind the one simply say I'm hitched in. They but if they feel there's
- 5:40nothing can be done, I don't know how much help I can give you.
- 5:43I tell you Laura was mooted. I refuse to believe that she and
- 5:46her husband entered into a suicide pack. Suicide pack, but I thought her
- 5:53husband was the murderer if he said too well. According to the police files,
- 5:57Laura and her husband, James Carthwright, and we did suicide together.
- 6:01Drove their car off a lonely pier into the ocean. How awful bodies were
- 6:05never found on account of the tides. The only things that will found along
- 6:10the shore one of Laura's shoes and her hand bag. Was there a suicide
- 6:14order? Yes, it was sound on Laura's night table. It said that
- 6:16she and Cartwright ran through all the money her parents had left her. They
- 6:21couldn't stand the prospect of just rubbing along. Well, frankly, miss Graham,
- 6:28I don't see her. I fell into alas. Yes, look there,
- 6:31I'm fine. I'm so paid this yesterday's journals. She one Fellows South
- 6:41American millionaire, and this is supposed to be one Fallows, executive vice president
- 6:45of the Los Alto's gold Mine. He's here in the States for a director's
- 6:48Meeteam, Well, what about it? Was, Graham? I believe this
- 6:53man to be James Cartwright. I met Laura's husband once in my life,
- 6:58and that was quite enough. But I still say this could be caught by
- 7:02I wasn't it taking amy for grantedmous scream. It's been fifteen years, so
- 7:06many mental goals. You named those altos that caught my attention, mister Valentine.
- 7:13All during those teen months they were married, Cockwright somehow arranged to send
- 7:16most of Laura's money out of the country to a town named those Altos in
- 7:20South America. Some legal hocus pocus with a shy silo yard. How do
- 7:27you know, dus why chicked with the private detective. That's where the trail
- 7:31ended fifteen years ago. As I get it, you feel James Cartwright married
- 7:36your cousin for her money, then somehow, very skillfully, he stripped her
- 7:42of it. Oh, it was all very neat. Laura's Sidney childre was
- 7:46on every withdrawal, no doubt about that. And then you feel he killed
- 7:48her on what was supposed to be a suicide. Cartwright loved himself too much
- 7:51to commit suicide. He was too handsome, too arrogant, and he knew
- 7:58they didn't run out of money. He just had it planned when you could
- 8:01pick it up. Well, right, I just can't go up to this
- 8:05mister Pallos and ask him to bear his life to meat. I know,
- 8:07and that's why I'm willing to tell you. I don't even have a picture
- 8:11of card Tride, and there isn't a set of his fingerprints anywhere. We
- 8:16thought that. I just want you to meet this mister pallos. See if
- 8:20he doesn't make the one little slip that'll prove I'm right about it. What
- 8:24do you mean if this man is James card Guide, he won't be able
- 8:28to resist anything that has to do with cards, sir. It Not only
- 8:33was he a gandler, but he prided himself on the trip he could do
- 8:37with cards, all sorts of slight of haird charming fellow to play cards with.
- 8:41Oh, I know what You'll go about it, right, mister Pillantine.
- 8:45You'll be able to make him give himself away. I'll pull to the
- 8:48card sharp and I'm well, we could give it a try. I must
- 8:52be sure there's one last time. I can't find any peace in my heart.
- 8:58You can't pick my own life, and this I'm sure I haven't failed
- 9:03Laura. I loved her very much. Of course, Cartwright with a beast
- 9:11made life a nightmare for Laura, deliberately cruel. God do you mean you
- 9:16got up a booth pleasure out of hurting her? She was the highest strung
- 9:20give girls. She was afraid of the dark. For instance, we were
- 9:22little girls. If we were left in the dark, she'd gorn out of
- 9:26the wall screen. Cartwright would pull cute little tricks like putting all the lights
- 9:31out, all sorts of things like that. Well, almost, Graham,
- 9:37it's a long shot, but if it'll make you feel any better, I'll
- 9:41see what I can do. I don't put much stock in all those things,
- 9:56but if it will put her mind, it wasst It's sure you're worth
- 9:58to try. I guess Valentine away from now. Oh, Paul henriche isn't
- 10:03it? Yes, I want you to stop checking into this business with mister
- 10:07Pollos. Well, now, I was of the impressions. Gillham wanted that
- 10:09to be a private manner. I was. He was dropping. I'm not
- 10:13ashamed to admit it to you, thought said dear say, Valentine, take
- 10:16this check. That's a pretty check. What am I supposed to do to
- 10:22earn it? Tell a Felicity that Pollos isn't card fight? Well, I
- 10:26look, he probably isn't friend, but at least I'm going to try and
- 10:28make sure Valentine I want to marry Felicity. If she's convinced Laura and her
- 10:33husband did commit suicide, I think she'll finally say yes to me. I
- 10:37don't want to take even the smallest chance of Pollos being Cartwright. I understand
- 10:41how you feel, Henrich, but I do, and I have an obligation
- 10:43of my client. You will be a sorry man, Valentine if you don't
- 10:46listen to me. I guess it's just a chance I'll have to take.
- 10:58Yeah, yeah, I hear it. En. She's been bothering you before,
- 11:01year after year, and the answer still suicide. No doubt about the
- 11:07handwriting on the suicide note. Okay, thanks a lot, George. The
- 11:18cablegram from that detect agency in Brandon's Harris is here. Oh good reading.
- 11:26Those palaces are respectable members of South American society. And you are palace struck
- 11:31it Rich at the Los Altos school mine about fifteen years ago. Married a
- 11:37lady from the stakes struck it Rich about fifteen years ago. Uh oh bod,
- 11:50it's such a shame. We are friends of Senora and Senora Palace.
- 11:54Now we missed them. Ay that's right, sir, they checked out this
- 11:58morning. I give nice young man ten dollars for being so helpful. I'm
- 12:01telling us where the palace. That's wink, madam. I didn't have women,
- 12:05and my young friend, yes, women. They went up to the
- 12:09mountain top ski lodge to rest up from doing nothing. They get cardbooks.
- 12:26Stop with that accent. Take a carda No, not again again. It's
- 12:31bad enough I have to do all the drive. I have to do a
- 12:33little practicing on card tricks. Yeah, go on, go on, go,
- 12:37go and go take a cart. Okay, three of diamonds close,
- 12:43Queen of Spade. Well, it's still a few miles to the ski lodge.
- 12:48I'll probably learn its Send missus Pallas at the table by the window.
- 13:05Thanks. Waitning, hey, buy yourself an annuity than people looking. Oh,
- 13:13I gotta get into the role of Georgie Valentine boy live for the party.
- 13:16Come on, okay, Georgie. Well, well, howney. Look
- 13:22at these two people sitting here by themselves. I bet they're as lonely as
- 13:26we are. I bet they'd like company too. Really, just an into
- 13:30my here, let's see what the gentleman wants. So when me and the
- 13:33wife here walk in, we said, right off, I'll fetch you.
- 13:35These two people are just like us, hate to eat along. That's just
- 13:37what my husband said. So we decided to come over and rescue. You
- 13:41said, now, Claire, Oh yeah, I want you to meet my
- 13:43wife. Mister fuddles, fun puddles and missus puddles. Oh, Valentine is
- 13:50the name I traveling women's dresses. You always gets a salesman. I sell
- 13:58women's dresses. Yeah, what's your line? Gold? Just go gold?
- 14:03How nice for you? It's it's really getting quite late. Oh I've done,
- 14:07mister Pallace. I'm glad to meet another businessman and knows how to take
- 14:11things easy, how to relax. I've bet anything. You have a hobby
- 14:13too, Yes, skiing, of course, Marlon Clemming. Oh yeah,
- 14:18well fine, but I have a hobby I carry around with me, makes
- 14:22me live with the party wherever I go. I'm sure you don't need a
- 14:26hobby like to do that. Mister Valentini. You're right there, he over
- 14:30the hobby's your house. Here? You see these cards? Go one off,
- 14:33take a card headline one? All right, all right, don't show
- 14:39me now five a hearts. I'm afraid not king of clubs, but looking
- 14:45here, I take a whole degg of cards, and by flipping them up
- 14:48in the air like that, I shovel a whole deg Your all fail here.
- 14:54Let's meet. Oh sure, go ahead, mister Pallace, if you
- 14:56want to show me how it should be done. I show are you say
- 15:01when it comes to things like this, I am, I say all thumbs.
- 15:05I would be no help at all. I merely wanted to help you
- 15:09pick up the cards? Who were Georgie and his card trick? I don't
- 15:13know about you one, but I've had enough of this. I'm going upstairs.
- 15:18Very well, Dorris. It had been very nice meeting. You must
- 15:20have valat and it's too bad about your trick. So sorry I couldn help
- 15:24you to make it come out right. That's okay, you know, perhaps
- 15:28you tried too hard. Let's sa a common failing with so many amateurs.
- 15:35Good night, not even a little noble scene. Yeah, and I was
- 15:41certainly bad enough. Oh he's either the wrong man or he's very clever.
- 15:43That isn't a question of brains, Brooksy. I counted on instinct if he
- 15:48were James Card right, demon card trickster, I was sure couldn't resist showing
- 15:50me how the tricks should have been done well. But now I don't know.
- 15:56Hey, wait, Broxy, suppose I tell Palace who I am and
- 15:58what I here for. I'm fine, you'll face up just like that.
- 16:02It isn't as silly as it sounds, it may turn into a very neat
- 16:04little trap. But if it is cards right, that'll live them all the
- 16:07wine you need, you know, Brooks see, they haven't been at a
- 16:08trap yet. That'll work without bit. And I'm sure one thing, I'll
- 16:11make a better piece of cheese than I am a card sharp. We'll return
- 16:30to tonight's adventure of George Valentine in just a moment. Maybe you've noticed,
- 16:34when you drive into a standard station or independent Chevron gas station that your car
- 16:38saver had a brand new tire set up in front of the station or in
- 16:41the window. It's the safer, longer mile age Atlas tire. Atlas tires
- 16:48have wide flat treads, treads that put more rubber on the road and give
- 16:52you better traction. They're thick treads with good deep grooves and hundreds of tough
- 16:56anti skid edges and might is the written warranty that you get when you buy
- 17:02an Atlas tire twelve months protection against tire damage from any road hazard, a
- 17:07warranty that's honored by more than thirty eight thousand Atlas dealers from coast to coast,
- 17:11and in Canada, you can buy Atlas tires on convenient budget terms.
- 17:17Charge them if you have a Chevern National credit card and get a liberal trade
- 17:21in on your present tires too. An inspection will show whether or not your
- 17:25present tires are safe. Drive in soon and ask your car saver to give
- 17:29you all the facts on the many safety features of the Atlas tire. Then
- 17:33you'll know why he's proud to put such a tire out front in his station.
- 17:37And you'll know why Atlas tires are out front with motorists all over the
- 17:41West. Remember the men to see for safe sure Atlas tires are the car
- 17:45savers at independent Chevern gas stations and Standard stations where they say and mean we
- 17:52take better care of your car. You're hired by a determined little spinster lady,
- 18:14Miss Felicity Graham, to try and solve a murder mystery more than fifteen
- 18:18years old. Your specific assignment is to prove to your own satisfaction whether a
- 18:22South American millionaire Je Polos is or is not James Cartwright as the same James
- 18:30Cartwright who presumably died in a suicide pact with Felicity's cousin Laura. Up to
- 18:34now, you've gotten nowhere. So if your name is George Valentine, you
- 18:38decide on the most direct approach possible. You're going to walk right up and
- 18:42tell signor Palace your suspicions before we going to see the palaces. George,
- 18:48You've got to tell me what you want when I come. I just wanted
- 18:51to make a nice noticeable bulge in the pocket of my jacket. You could
- 18:53tell me, ha hud. Yeah. Oh, suppose you're Valentine, the
- 19:03card tricks man. Yeah, well that's what I came over to explain,
- 19:07mister Pallace, that is, if we may come in. Oh, of
- 19:08course, of course, has your husband been practicing, mister Valentine, Well
- 19:14he's been cooking up something. Whose at the door? Oh one, darling,
- 19:19we must be dressed, put dinner, and I'm sure that please missus
- 19:22Pallace, this one take long. The truth is, I'm not a traveling
- 19:26salesman. This is my secretary, Miss Brooks, and the reason I'm up
- 19:30here at the lodge is to find out if you're a murderer. Mister Pallas,
- 19:33what one call the manager at once? This man is a rating Unitic
- 19:37think past or mighty brother of Victoria. Well he suspected murderer. Mister Pallace
- 19:41was supposed to have practically had an obsession about card tricks, so if he
- 19:45had been you, he would have given himself away when I did that card
- 19:48tricks so badly. Must we didn't do any more of this fantastic story.
- 19:52Oh no, no, but I find this rather intriguing, my dear,
- 19:56Just why did you suspect me? Mister Valentine. The trailer of the murderer
- 19:59led this out America, the Los Altos, to be exact, it was
- 20:02lost there. Oh, my dear fellow. There are more than a thousand
- 20:04people in Los Altos. Fully more than half of them work for my company
- 20:08as a matter of fact, or I came to apologize it was a bad
- 20:11hunch, fully played. You should apologize forcing yourself on this in the Dino
- 20:15lying to us. Yeah, I know, especially when it was also unnecessary.
- 20:18I'm glad to see I have been exonerated. That's not exactly what I
- 20:22meant, What is it? I mean? I now have a concrete way
- 20:26to solve this case. In my pocket, I have the lovely heart shaped
- 20:30compact that was found in the dead lady's handbag. Really, yeah, strange,
- 20:34how everybody overlooks such a glaring piece of evidence at the time, but
- 20:37sometimes it happens. What in the world are you talking about? As soon
- 20:41as I get back to town, I'm going to have an expert check on
- 20:42this compact and I think I can prove it was murder. Good luck,
- 20:47Valentine, and be sure to let me know about this solution when you find
- 20:51it. I shall be most interested. Yeah, Yea'll do that. Good
- 20:56Night, good night, good night, good night, Georgia. I having
- 21:00the slidest died a word mushing train. Hey, hey, you get me
- 21:03in yo, Henry Twat. Come to know it's impolite not to answer when
- 21:11somebody's talking to you, and tell you answer a couple of questions. I
- 21:14warned you not to interfere. Well, Henry's welcome to Mountain Top Live.
- 21:18You have been eavesdropping again, ain't friends? Yes, and again. I
- 21:19don't apologize for it. I'll kill you if you don't stop. Middle Each's
- 21:23not fair, Buss you didn't say it. Put him up and fight like
- 21:26a man. I'm not going to let Felicity find out. I don't care
- 21:30if this one Pellos didn't kill me. Okay, if you must play rough.
- 21:36Come on, Angel, let's get out of here. Now, go
- 21:47on up to your room, Brooks and get dealed up for dinner. The
- 21:48polos is cut right, He'll move having on earth to get this silly come
- 21:52Oh, it's just a long shot, but at least I'll feel we did
- 21:53what we could from miss Graham. I'll go on, scoot scoot, okay,
- 21:56darling, I'll see you lady be here. Yeah, I'll keep my
- 21:59back the wall and the lights on. Is there any fireworks? And I
- 22:03want to see who sets him off? Any? I might as well shake.
- 22:11No, no, no, I didn't. I didn't get a chance
- 22:34to put the light on in the wall. It was the fallen run of
- 22:37my head, this dew and I don't have an anime in the world.
- 22:42Maybe it was a dear friend who did this. All I know is it
- 22:45was a he. I heard his footsteps and the way he hit me.
- 22:48I know it was Oh sure, I see the compact is gone. We
- 22:52found out what we wanted. He was Cartwright, Yeah, a long lost
- 22:56Cartwright. Why don't you go to tell the police so they can really dig
- 22:59in this in your palaces? Yeah? Yeah, But first we're going down
- 23:02to the dining room an intrude on the Palace's privacy once more. We're gonna
- 23:07make believe this little accident up here never happened. I'm certainly not going to
- 23:11break bread with a man who nearly broke your head. I know it doesn't
- 23:14make much sense saying jel, but that's what we have to do. Hid
- 23:29the appetide. Folks ahead, mister lannontonomous broke. I thought you said you
- 23:33were leaving well, Missus Palace. I was out for a little while,
- 23:37but I'm back again, biggest life. Mister Hender'd you get at that table?
- 23:41Hi, everybody's here, Maybe join you? Folks, really, don't
- 23:42you? Thank you Missus Pallas. We will sit down, please do.
- 23:47And since this is our last meeting, I insist on trying one more card
- 23:51trick. Oh waiting. You'll be ready to help out, won't you?
- 23:55Good God Ah, thanks ladies and gentlemen for your kind applause, and thank
- 24:03you very much gentlemen of talk Styr timing was superb. One people are staring
- 24:10at us. Well, no, mister Vanton, I really must agree with
- 24:12thank you. It's about please and gentlemen, I'd like to show you a
- 24:17very spectacular car track, which will have special meaning to one particular person in
- 24:22here, since it depends entirely on the element of surprise, I will now
- 24:27ask that the room be plunged into total darkness. Okay, wait there,
- 24:33that's fine, Dosage, Everything is going right. Want me to do a
- 24:40joint? That was hard? Come on, proceed, Let's get up to
- 24:41the palace of suite Norris Dorris, please please let me in, Darling.
- 24:55There is nothing to be frightened the ball. Look, perhaps she'd let me
- 24:56come in and help her. What are you doing here? You're done enough.
- 25:00I know how you feel, but why did you have to do that?
- 25:02Well, that's what I must explain. I don't care about your explanation.
- 25:04I don't want to hear them. Just please please help me. We
- 25:07must get in there, help me, Valente. Okay, Doris, Doris
- 25:17Naki? Where are you? Please? Doris? Oh, Dorris, No,
- 25:25she's gone. The back door is open and she's gone. Well I
- 25:29can find this is not really lie I've been leaving is over and the new
- 25:37way I am glad. I don't know how you guessed my secret, Valentine,
- 25:41But this to you, Valentine, what does this mean? You'd better
- 25:45faction. I am Laura Cartwright and I killed my husband fifteen years ago.
- 25:55What is that, George. He drove me to it and I planned stock
- 26:00carefully, sending the money out of the country, planting the evidence, and
- 26:03then going to Lasltos. Believe I found real happiness there with you, Je.
- 26:11But this would have been the end for us anyway, So goodbye.
- 26:18Davis. Boris killed the man, the man you were looking for. No,
- 26:26this is also mixed up. I know it's the Valentine here, I
- 26:30see a minute place. Oh yeah, yeah, sure, I excuse me,
- 26:37missus Paliso. It's terrible. I saw in the danning room. I
- 26:40not no, no, outside she was trying to drive away in her husband's
- 26:42car in such a hurry. Yeah. Yeah, she lost control and when
- 26:45over the side of the mountain. It's horrible. Yeah, it is horrible
- 26:49for the manager. You wanted to know, if you, if you would
- 26:52break the news to mister pause. Yeah, I guess saw. And then
- 26:56there's still something to be done to help the living. To ensure the best
- 27:11performance of modern automobile engines, our scientists subjected hundreds of motor oils to grueling
- 27:18laboratory and road tests. Even atomic energy was used atomically treated piston rings and
- 27:23test car showed enginewaar as it occurred. The result was heavy duty RPM,
- 27:30a motor oil that, compared to premium type oils as designated by the American
- 27:34Petroleum Institute, doubles engine life between major overhauls due to lubrication. So if
- 27:40you're not already using this oil, switch over now to heavy duty RPM and
- 27:45get top protection for your car. Ask for heavy duty RPM motor oil at
- 27:49independent Chevron gas stations and standard stations where they say and mean we take better
- 27:56care of your car. Well, Lieutenant Johnson say it always a nice guy,
- 28:10Brooks. If there's a way of keeping the truth about Laura from Pelissa
- 28:12Graham, he'll find it. Oh, yes, it's much better that way.
- 28:15She can now find some happiness with Paul Henry. Yeah. I should
- 28:18be sorre at Paul for slugging me and taking away that worthless compact, But
- 28:22one I guess people in love deserve some consideration. George, how did you
- 28:27ever suspect missus Pallace at all? We were so definitely looking for a man
- 28:32because it was a man who knocked me out. Yeah, not a woman,
- 28:34and only the murderer knew for sure that the compact didn't mean anything,
- 28:38so why do anything about getting it for me? But that's when you are
- 28:41smooth thing. I started to think working at it objectively, it was much
- 28:45easier for Doris than her husband to send that money out of the country.
- 28:48And it was her shoe and handbag that were fond and the note about suicide
- 28:52pact that wasn't her handwriting. Remember when she was an American who came to
- 28:56Los Altos and Mary Polloce some fifteen years I hand to a shore and I
- 29:00remembered what Felicity said about Doris Spear at the turn, Like I always said,
- 29:04girg, you don't miss anything. See what song is it? Anyway?
- 29:11I wonder quits that great big ground object overhere? Our head might help
- 29:15h No, police headquarters is complete without well, at least you can't say
- 29:21the clock was right on the line. No, no, n who is
- 29:23just over your head? To Night's transcribed Adventure of George Valentine has been brought
- 29:37to you by Standard Oil Company of California, on behalf of independent Chevron Gas
- 29:41Stations and Standard Stations throughout the West. Robert Bailey has starred as George,

- 30:47Let George do It? As heard overseas through the worldwide facilities of the
- 30:49Armed Forces Radio Service. This is the mutual Don Lee Broadcasting System. Welcome
- 31:10back. I'm not certain this was one of his better plans for solving the
- 31:15crime. Given the result, now you know, it just seems that there
- 31:22may have been another way, or if he was going to go the same
- 31:25way, he could have called Lieutenant Johnson and said, hey, I'm going
- 31:30to I think I may be about to solve that murder in some other ways
- 31:33made sure that she was unable to bolt from the scene from the scene of
- 31:42the action. Sometimes it does seem the fictional detectives made to go it's a
- 31:48little bit too far in their desire for a dramatic conclusion when perhaps it's not
- 31:52necessary, where in this case helpful with what happened to the killer. But
- 31:57I guess worked out for happy ending for the client. The more happen sence,
- 32:04because I certainly don't think George planned on her throwing herself to her death.
- 32:08All right, well that'll do it, or in the car accident,
- 32:13I should say parison in the car accident, But that'll actually do it for
- 32:16today. Join us back here next week for another episode of Let George Do
- 32:20It, and then tomorrow I'll be sure and listening for listening for Sherlock Holmes
