Transcript
- 0:01So welcome back to episode 2 for September and
- 0:04welcome back to fostering faith. My name is Tracy
- 0:06I will be your host today and so in this episode
- 0:09the Bible was never meant to be skimmed over
- 0:11for inspirational lines or just used for an Argument
- 0:16it was God's Word given to reveal his character
- 0:19tell a story of redemption For his people and
- 0:23today we're going to be reading and looking at
- 0:25scripture context move from information to transformation
- 0:29and develop what is the sustaining practice of
- 0:31receiving and reflecting on it and responding
- 0:33to the Word. And so if you're new here, welcome
- 0:36to Fostering Faith. If you are a return guest,
- 0:38thank you so much for tuning in. I am your host
- 0:40Tracy and we're going to be in week two in our
- 0:43series Rooted. A faith that holds. Last week
- 0:45we talked about abiding in Christ and we said
- 0:48that fruit cannot do the job of roots and spiritual
- 0:51maturity grows through connection and not performance.
- 0:54And today we're going to be talking about the
- 0:56primary ways that God roots us. And I want to
- 0:59begin with a question that may be a little uncomfortable.
- 1:03Do you read the Bible to hear God or do you read
- 1:06it to confirm what you already believe? And so
- 1:10the question is that matters because it is possible
- 1:14to open up scripture and never truly submit to
- 1:17it. We can search for a verse that supports our
- 1:20opinion, skim over something that makes us feel
- 1:22better, avoid passages that challenge us. But
- 1:25scripture is not a mirror designed to reflect
- 1:28our preferences. It is a window that reveals
- 1:30God. And by His Spirit and light, it exposes
- 1:35us truthfully. And so a lot of times we just,
- 1:37again, we want itchy ears. We want to have pastors.
- 1:39We want to have sermons that make us feel better
- 1:41about what we're doing. And so we got to go to
- 1:44what truth says. We got to go with what the context
- 1:46says. We have to go by what scripture says, not
- 1:48how we feel or want to feel. Are we want to be
- 1:50okay with the sin that we're doing? And oh, Jesus
- 1:52will like all the things that we can pull out
- 1:54of context. And so it's so important. And so
- 1:56Hebrews 412 that says the word of God is living
- 2:00and effective, sharper than any two double -edged
- 2:03sword, able to judge the thoughts and intentions
- 2:05of our heart. The Bible is not simply just sitting
- 2:07here waiting for us to evaluate it. Under the
- 2:10work of the Holy Spirit, it's there to evaluate
- 2:12us. And so let's pray before we get into this
- 2:15message. And so Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 2:16speaking. Thank you. that you are not just leaving
- 2:19us out. Thank you that you have not left us to
- 2:22invent who you are or to guess what is true.
- 2:25Give us a humble heart today, correct what is
- 2:28crooked, comfort what is wounded, and awaken
- 2:30what is growing sleepily. Holy Spirit, help us
- 2:34understand to obey the word that you've inspired.
- 2:37We may pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. And so
- 2:41scripture is a story before it is a slogan. And
- 2:44so I just did a big report for school with my
- 2:46dad and we had to walk through scripture front
- 2:49to end from Genesis to Revelation. We had to
- 2:51have it done within 45 minutes. And it was harder
- 2:55than what you would imagine. And so we had to
- 2:57do take after take because I would get through
- 2:59the Old Testament, it would be 40 minutes long.
- 3:02And so we had to trim it down and we had to revise
- 3:04it. And so what is the Bible? And so the Bible
- 3:07is a library, a collection of 66 books. written
- 3:11across centuries by different genres, historical
- 3:14settings. And yet it tells one unified story
- 3:17that God creates, humanity rebels, God punishes
- 3:21and promises redemption, Jesus's fills that promise
- 3:24and the spirit forms a people and Christ will
- 3:28return to make all things new. And so the big
- 3:31story projects us, protects us from turning from
- 3:35isolating verses into slogans. And so Jeremiah
- 3:3720, line 11 was first spoken. to the exiles facing
- 3:41a long season in Babylon, not someone deciding
- 3:44whether every personal plan will succeed immediately.
- 3:48Philippians 4 .13 is not a promise that we can
- 3:51accomplish any dream we imagine. Paul is explaining
- 3:54that Christ strengthens him to remain faithful
- 3:57in plenty and in hunger and obedience and in
- 4:01need. Context does not weaken a verse. Context
- 4:04reveals its actual strength. When we remove a
- 4:07verse from its setting, We can make the Bible
- 4:09say something pumperning that God is not promising.
- 4:12And when life does not follow that promise, we
- 4:15think that God failed, but God did not fail.
- 4:18We asked his word to carry a meaning and we place
- 4:21it in there. And so whenever we read and ask,
- 4:24who wrote this? To whom? What's happening? What
- 4:28kind of writing is this? Is it history? Is it
- 4:30poetry? Is it prophecy? Is it wisdom? Is it gospel?
- 4:33Is it a leather? And what comes before it after?
- 4:36How does this passage fit the whole story that
- 4:39finds its center in Jesus? And so we do not need
- 4:44a seminary degree to read faithfully. We need
- 4:47humility, patience, good questions, and willingness
- 4:52to let the text lead. And so information is not
- 4:57yet transformation. And so James 1 compares a
- 5:00person who hears a word but does not. who does
- 5:03not do someone who looks in a mirror and immediately
- 5:06forgets what they saw. The problem is not the
- 5:08lack of exposure. The problem is a lack of response.
- 5:12And so you can know Bible facts and still be
- 5:15harsh. You can memorize verses and refuse to
- 5:18forgive. You can win a theological argument and
- 5:21lose the heart of Christ in the way that you
- 5:23treat people that you come across. Truth that
- 5:28never reaches obedience can inflate pride. instead
- 5:32of forming love. That is why biblical knowledge
- 5:34must always move through the heart and into the
- 5:38life. And so when Jesus tells the story of the
- 5:42wise, foolish builders in Matthew 7, both hear
- 5:46his words. And so the difference is that one
- 5:49puts it into practice. The storm reveals that
- 5:52hearing alone could not weather the words that
- 5:56become foundation. And so the goal was not to
- 5:58finish the reading plan or to check mark the
- 6:00box. The goal is to let that word sit in you
- 6:04and finish the work in you. And so just like
- 6:07these podcasts, this is not meant to change you.
- 6:09I'm never going to change your heart. That's
- 6:10God's job. We're out here just planting seeds.
- 6:13And so this is, again, what we said before, is
- 6:15that these are just like little supplements.
- 6:17And so the majority of your time with Him, it
- 6:21needs to be you, Him, and the Bible, just sitting
- 6:23with Him. And so we have to read slow enough
- 6:27to be seen. Whenever we're used to consuming
- 6:30everything quickly, we scroll, we scan, we move
- 6:33on, we hold the side button, and so it's all
- 6:35double time. But scripture often requires a different
- 6:38pace. Take a short passage and read it more than
- 6:41once. On the first reading, notice what it says.
- 6:44On the second, notice what it shows you about
- 6:46God. And third, notice where it confronts and
- 6:50conforms you or calls you. And then sit with
- 6:52that one sentence. And so we talked about that
- 6:55in the beginning. And so we had to sit with one
- 6:57verse. And whenever I started school, we'd just
- 7:00sit with that one verse, nothing else, no commentaries,
- 7:03no looking it up. And I believe it was Acts 1
- 7:05-8 that we had to sit with for three weeks. Just
- 7:09sit with that one sentence. Not because the rest
- 7:11doesn't matter, because the intention is part
- 7:14of the love. And Psalm 1 uses language meditating
- 7:17on a day and night. Biblical meditation is not
- 7:20emptying my mind. And it's dealing with our intention
- 7:22of God's truth until it begins to shape you and
- 7:25to shape your reflexes. And so think about worry.
- 7:29If you are intellectually know that God cares
- 7:32about you, but then anxiety rises and your reflex
- 7:35may still say, everything depends on me. Meditation
- 7:39takes the truths of first Peter five, seven,
- 7:42cast all your cares on him because he cares about
- 7:45you and rehearse it until your heart begins to
- 7:47respond differently. The word gets in you whenever
- 7:51you no longer say, only a sentence and you can
- 7:55quote it, but the truth that you can stand on.
- 7:57And so you can sit there with 1 Peter 1 5 7 for
- 8:01a full year. There is no need to move on to the
- 8:04next thing if you've not like really got that
- 8:06in there. And so you just practice that obedience
- 8:09daily and daily until that reflex of fear and
- 8:12anxiety go away. And so the word will get into
- 8:16you and it will shape you. It will transform
- 8:19you. And the Holy Spirit does the hard work,
- 8:24and so the Holy Spirit and the Word work together.
- 8:26We do not have the choice between the Spirit
- 8:29and Scripture. Spirit inspired the Word, and
- 8:32it illuminates the Word. It uses the Word to
- 8:34form Christ in us. The Holy Spirit will not lead
- 8:37us in a direction that contradicts the character
- 8:39and commands that are revealed in Scripture.
- 8:42Sometimes people say, God told me. What they
- 8:45mean is, I strongly want this. Desire can be
- 8:49loud. Fear can be loud. Impulse can be loud.
- 8:51That is why impressions must stay tested. Does
- 8:55this align with Scripture? Does it look like
- 8:58character of Jesus? Does this produce a fruit
- 9:01of the Spirit? Can I withstand wise counsel?
- 9:05Does this invite humble obedience? Or does this
- 9:08flatter my ego and excuse my sin? And that is
- 9:11so huge. You don't have to pray, hey, God, can
- 9:15I lie about this? Or hey, God, can I do this?
- 9:17If it is not in Scripture, the answer is no.
- 9:21The Word gives boundaries to discernment, and
- 9:24the Spirit makes the Word living in your present
- 9:27obedience. And so you know how I like to have
- 9:31just steps and practical tips. And I hope that
- 9:34these messages are inspiring and allowing you
- 9:37just to sit with His Word. And so here are some
- 9:40four steps about practicing. And so receive,
- 9:44reflect, respond, and remember. And so, four
- 9:49R's. And so here are some simple practices for
- 9:52this week. Receive. Read a short passage without
- 9:56rushing. Begin with the gospel paragraph or work
- 10:00from one New Testament letter. Ask God for understanding.
- 10:04And maybe not a whole letter, maybe just a verse.
- 10:07And write it down. Reflect. Write the passage
- 10:10with what it reveals about God. Humanity, sin,
- 10:14grace, a faithful life, and your observations
- 10:19tied to what the passage actually says. Go verse
- 10:23by verse, word by word, and just sit with it
- 10:26and reflect. And it's okay to sit in silence.
- 10:29And as society, we don't do that often. And just
- 10:32sit with it. Hey, God, what does this mean? What
- 10:34does this mean to me? What are you teaching me
- 10:37about this verse? And that's why this book is
- 10:39alive. You could read the same sentence and depending
- 10:42on what season that you're in, it could just
- 10:45speak volumes to you. and then respond. Name
- 10:49one concrete act of obedience. If the text calls
- 10:54you to forgive, identify whom you need to release
- 10:59it to. If it calls you to be generous, decide
- 11:01what you want to give. If it confronts gossip,
- 11:04choose a conversation that you will not join
- 11:06in. And so the scripture is there to refine us
- 11:12and correct us. And it's not always going to
- 11:15be comfortable. And that's the great thing. is
- 11:17that he can use words that were written over
- 11:201 ,500 years on three different continents in
- 11:22three different languages to correct his 2 ,000
- 11:25years later. That's why this book is so relevant.
- 11:30And four, remember, carry one sentence into the
- 11:34day, put it to where you see it, repeat it when
- 11:37the pressure comes, and let it interrupt the
- 11:40old script in your mind. And so you're replacing
- 11:43that truth. that lie with the truth. And so whatever
- 11:46negative thought that you're thinking, whatever
- 11:48reminiscing and whatever God has just wiggled
- 11:50his way in there, we have to replace that lie
- 11:53with a truth. And so please hear me. Consistency
- 11:56matters more than volume. Reading three chapters
- 11:59while distracted and not automatically is gonna
- 12:02make anything better. And so just sitting with
- 12:04one verse, six verses, the attention and obedience
- 12:07that it takes just to let that simmer. And so,
- 12:10yeah, that's great that you checkmarked your
- 12:12boxes on your plans, but if you've not set with
- 12:14that verse and it's not transforming you, so
- 12:16what's it longer? Who cares? Who cares that it
- 12:19took you a year to get through John? Who cares
- 12:22that it took you three years to get through Matthew?
- 12:24Who cares? No one. No one. Except for we're in
- 12:27a society where it's busy and rush and I've heard
- 12:29the babble in a year. Okay, great. You're the
- 12:32same that you were three years ago. I can do
- 12:34a lot of things, but it not change me. And so
- 12:37it's time under tension. It's time that's just
- 12:39sitting with the Word. And so even just working
- 12:42out, so it's time under tension. It's those small
- 12:44little reps every day that that tension that
- 12:46just weighs on you. And so it's just that time
- 12:49and obedience just sitting with Him. And so if
- 12:51you're not reading, if you're reading scripture
- 12:52in chishtuck marking boxes, and no one can see
- 12:55the fruits of the root that was spent with your
- 13:00time with God, then it's not changing you. And
- 13:03so once scripture feels dry or difficult, that's
- 13:06okay. And so there's going to be days that the
- 13:08Bible feels alive and the days that feel just
- 13:11so quiet. That does not measure its authority
- 13:15by your emotional response. A meal still nourishes
- 13:17you, whatever it is, still is not the most exciting
- 13:19meal that you have ever eaten. And Derek and
- 13:22I talk about this all the time because I eat
- 13:24almost the same thing every day. And he's just,
- 13:26and my labs are great and it's fine. And it's
- 13:29just, it's not the most exciting meal. It's hamburger,
- 13:32a sweet potato, and some blueberries. Every day.
- 13:35It's the same thing. It's not exciting, but it's
- 13:37delicious, and I like it, and it gives me what
- 13:39I need. And just like that. So some patches are
- 13:41difficult. Some raises questions. Faithful reading
- 13:44does not pretend those questions are not there.
- 13:47Write them down. Study them. Ask a trusted pastor
- 13:51or a teacher. Use a reliable source. Let difficulty
- 13:55make you a deeper student, not a quicker skeptic
- 13:59or careless interpreter. And if you use scripture
- 14:04to shame yourself, remember that the Bible is
- 14:06not merely a list of demands. It is a story of
- 14:09grace. God commands exposure to our needs and
- 14:13shows us what love looks like and drives us towards
- 14:16independence on Christ. We do not read to earn
- 14:20God's welcome. In Christ, we read from the inside
- 14:24of His welcome. And so I hope that this encouraged
- 14:27you. And so this week, ask, where have I been
- 14:32reading selectively. What truth do I resist obeying?
- 14:37What passage do I need to receive slowly? And
- 14:41what is my next response? And so I would like
- 14:45to close out in prayer. And so, Father, give
- 14:48us a hunger for your word. Protect us from twisting
- 14:50it, skimming it, and using it against others
- 14:53while refusing it work in us. Help us read in
- 14:57context. Jesus sees clearly and respond with
- 15:01obedience. When our minds are confused, bring
- 15:03us light. When our hearts are hardened, make
- 15:06them tender. When our lives are unsustainable,
- 15:09establish us in truth and let your word dwell
- 15:12richly in us. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
- 15:17And if this episode helped you, share with a
- 15:19friend or a small group. Choose a passage to
- 15:21practice together this week. Follow us, Fostering
- 15:24Faith, and visit Fostering Faith Media for our
- 15:27companion resources. And next week, we're going
- 15:29to be talking about prayer beyond polished words
- 15:32and what it means to meet Jesus honestly when
- 15:36we are grateful, angry, disappointed, confused,
- 15:42and simply tired. Have a great week. We love
- 15:45you.
