- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:08preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:11learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:15Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas.
- 0:19The end. Really extensive background
- 0:23Christmas music to fill in a woman.
- 0:28He's already got a book open, which means we're in trouble.
- 0:31No, no, no. I mean, I was just looking
- 0:32through this as I was starting to think, but I was hoping, I
- 0:37was hoping that, you know, after having Carol's cookies and cocoa
- 0:41last night, which a couple nights ago now for those
- 0:45listening to the podcast, that it would feel more like
- 0:47Christmas. This here doesn't feel like
- 0:49Christmas to me. I don't know if you're feeling
- 0:52that we're feeling in our house though.
- 0:55Well, you already had Christmas, so you're.
- 0:58We did have our first, we did have our first Christmas with
- 1:01our with Meg's side of the family while they were here for
- 1:03Thanksgiving. That is true.
- 1:05You're already. In the, I would say outside of
- 1:08the home, it doesn't feel like Christmas.
- 1:11Inside the home since Saturday, whenever we got the tree
- 1:17definitely feels like Christmas because that's all Theo wants to
- 1:23talk about is the Christmas tree and playing with the train
- 1:26underneath. Yeah.
- 1:27So it's just like that's our thing right now is Christmas
- 1:32tree and and also so many packages are coming in.
- 1:35Yeah, yeah, yeah. For other people, that is like,
- 1:40I'm gay because I'm like normally stuff comes in for
- 1:43Rebecca. I'm not usually waiting on
- 1:46things to come in for people or for the kids or whatever.
- 1:48And so, yeah, the influx of packages and the big tree and
- 1:54train set make it feel like Christmas.
- 1:57Yeah, well, and, and, and your guys are at such a great age for
- 2:01Christmas and all the all the fun that comes with that.
- 2:06They, they really are at a good age.
- 2:09Our guys are like, like they're they're all in various stages.
- 2:13I mean, Eli a little less so, but all in various stages of
- 2:18teenage apathy. What I want?
- 2:20All right. He's like.
- 2:21Next, pulling teeth like, hey, put some things on your wish
- 2:24list for grandma and you know, and there's like, all right, do
- 2:27we have to? I wish I didn't have to make a
- 2:29wish list. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:32Why do I have to do that? Oh wow.
- 2:34Well, they're just going to get me underwear anyway.
- 2:37I mean, they did get some clothes.
- 2:38They did get some clothes that were not on their wish list.
- 2:40That's just part of it. Same boys.
- 2:42Rebecca's determined to do the whole matching pajamas.
- 2:46Thing every year, yeah. Last year's fit?
- 2:50Just get the newest big size for Theo.
- 2:54We still got them. Yeah.
- 2:55Oh, no, no. Old Navy had a sail in October
- 2:58and we had to get them before everyone got them.
- 3:01Yeah, yeah, OK. There were there were six kids
- 3:05in matching oh gosh in matching Christmas pyjamas Thanksgiving
- 3:12night and then the next morning when they woke up for are our
- 3:15first Christmas. Yeah, yeah, no.
- 3:19So anyway, in in in an attempt to maybe get me a little more in
- 3:28the Christmas mindset, which. Consumerism.
- 3:32That's the word I want. That's what you're looking for.
- 3:34But yeah, Christmas often includes some gift giving, and I
- 3:39wondered if if we could come up with any, any recommendations,
- 3:46any gift recommendations for people who might still be trying
- 3:50to find something for somebody? Well, before we get to
- 3:54recommendations to think of the impact that gifts have had on
- 3:59us. What's the best Christmas gift
- 4:01you ever got? Oh best Christmas gift I ever
- 4:05got. I don't know if it was the best
- 4:08but it definitely ranks up there and one that I will always
- 4:11remember. It was the Christmas I was 8
- 4:13years old and. You can remember that.
- 4:18I can remember that, yeah, yeah, Still can remember that.
- 4:21It was, you know, in the last century, but.
- 4:24I can still remember last Millennium, actually.
- 4:26Yeah, it was before you were born.
- 4:28Yeah. So I walked downstairs on
- 4:31Christmas morning and set up in the living room was a brand new
- 4:38set of bunk beds, which was like, I don't know why, but that
- 4:43was like really cool to me. You can only sleep on one
- 4:47though. Yeah, that's for me and my
- 4:48brother. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:51Like I get choices every night. No, no, no, no, we, we shared a
- 4:54room from the time, from the time he moved, you know, out of
- 4:58my parents room as an infant. It wasn't there.
- 5:01Like it's just the magic of Christmas.
- 5:02Like it wasn't there the night before and there it was all set
- 5:07up. You know, this big wooden bunk
- 5:10bed set. Yeah, no, I like, I like the the
- 5:13concept of the the magic of Christmas.
- 5:16I was like around that same age and I was determined to catch
- 5:19sand in the act. And so I was going to sleep in
- 5:23this cardboard box hiding next to the Christmas tree, or I was
- 5:28going to stay up all night right in the box.
- 5:32How'd that work out? Passed out by like 10:00.
- 5:34Mom just went and said everything happened.
- 5:37I just woke up to everything oh so close.
- 5:41So close. I would say most.
- 5:44There's a couple like as a kid, memorable ones of so mad one
- 5:51year because my mom was a teacher and educator so
- 5:55education was super important and I wanted to she wanted me to
- 5:59learn Spanish and I should have dedicated more time to that
- 6:03retrospect. One year I got Rosetta Stone.
- 6:06Oh yeah. Which is a big digital learning
- 6:10tool for learning different languages.
- 6:13Like Duolingo before Duolingo existed.
- 6:15And a lot more expensive, yeah, sure.
- 6:17Than Duolingo. And I was like this is it this?
- 6:23Because I know expensive it was right?
- 6:24Right, right, right, right. I was like, great, I got more
- 6:29school work for Christmas and then I went back, went to the
- 6:35back porch and I think it was also the same year that I got my
- 6:38first bike. And so and like they they had to
- 6:43really let me know how much work went into it because apparently
- 6:47Kmart blue light sales, if anyone remember that was out of
- 6:52the bike with like tanks that I wanted, but they had one that
- 6:57was disassembled that they could do.
- 6:59So my grandfather and my mom had to completely put together this
- 7:03bike. And so it was one of those like
- 7:08get you low. So then the highs, even high,
- 7:12the Rosetta is better than the bike, but that was definitely a
- 7:15more memorable Christmas gift for sure.
- 7:19I remember one of the one of the fun gifts we got somewhere along
- 7:22the way me and my brother both got funk bad.
- 7:27But these popper guns that like you push the two pieces together
- 7:33in the air forces the ball out and had like probably 15 ping
- 7:37pong ball size balls out. We had fun with those for years.
- 7:46So my my, my Christmas gift recommendations are not nearly
- 7:49that fun. I don't.
- 7:52Know you think I'm going to let you go back to that Nope no.
- 7:57So my follow up at youth group was what was the best gift
- 8:03someone gave you that money couldn't buy?
- 8:08Could be a kind word, could be time together, could be an
- 8:11experience, whatever. Specifically at Christmas.
- 8:14No, it doesn't have to because it just wasn't the best gift
- 8:17someone gave you that money couldn't buy.
- 8:21That's a tougher 1, so I'll go 1st to buy you time.
- 8:23All right. Go for it.
- 8:25Obviously, if Rebecca's listening, it's the children
- 8:30that's the answer. The family that I've gotten
- 8:33through marriage, that's it. Now, Rebecca, you can stop
- 8:37listening. More recently, the standout one.
- 8:40When I was in Mexico this past summer, I got to catch up with a
- 8:45near and dear friend, Salomon, who maybe known as the doctor
- 8:52that helped some of our mission team during the mission trip.
- 8:56But we got together after the mission trip and we hadn't seen
- 8:59each other for maybe like nine years or something like that
- 9:03because he was off at doctor school and then doing
- 9:06internships and clinical, like all that kind of stuff.
- 9:09And he finally moved back into the area and towards the end of
- 9:13our conversation, he was just like flabbergasted, like
- 9:18surprised, but in a good pleasantly surprised at how much
- 9:23I had changed and grown as a person and how God had been
- 9:27working in my life. And and for me, that was one of
- 9:31the more one of the best gifts he could have provided was just
- 9:36a confirmation of what God had been doing in my life all these
- 9:39years where some people are like, well, I like you.
- 9:43So like, yeah, God's done good things or I don't know.
- 9:47I feel like in ministry, people can't imagine how I was before.
- 9:52So to have someone that knew me really, really well before and
- 9:58see me now and see the transformation that God has done
- 10:01in my life slowly but surely over the past however many years
- 10:06was just an incredible gift. That what I've acknowledged and
- 10:10recognized isn't just my imagination, and that someone
- 10:14that would be able to tell it was able to see that.
- 10:19And so that was a beautiful gift.
- 10:25Yeah, so if we're not, if we're not saying, you know, Christmas
- 10:28wives and family and all that kind of stuff, but.
- 10:32If you're listening, it's. Definitely that, definitely her.
- 10:37I think it might be invitation back into ministry when we came
- 10:45after we came back from Uganda and it kind of resettled here in
- 10:49New Jersey. You know, we aren't really sure
- 10:52what the future held. I wasn't sure that I was going
- 10:56to go back into ministry or if just enter the the workforce, so
- 11:02to speak, and just find a job to do.
- 11:06And, you know, clearly if if that offer, if that invitation,
- 11:11that gift hadn't been given, I wouldn't be here today having
- 11:16this conversation with you. He wouldn't be here either.
- 11:22And so I think that's what I would say, yeah.
- 11:25Thanks, Ronnie. Yeah.
- 11:26No, for sure. And so with those two things in
- 11:30mind, what are some gift recommendations that we can
- 11:34provide people? Yeah, well, you were trying to
- 11:38be all sensitive and say, you know, Scott, not everybody wants
- 11:42to read a book, but I don't really care.
- 11:45That's that's I'm sure there are other good gift recommendations.
- 11:49But you know, when I was thinking about it, specifically
- 11:53books, some specific books came to my mind because people ask me
- 11:59sometime, like, how do you Like, how have you gotten to where you
- 12:03are? Like you, you, you think about
- 12:04things in Scripture like so differently than I ever.
- 12:08Well, mostly it's because I read and other people think about
- 12:10things differently than I do. And so that makes me think about
- 12:13things differently. And so if, if I only ever
- 12:18thought about scripture because I was the one reading scripture
- 12:21and thinking about it, yes, the Holy Spirit speaks, but I don't
- 12:26think that I would get to where I've gotten in some of my
- 12:30thinking without the role of some other people who have
- 12:35spoken into my life, my life through their writings.
- 12:40And so, you know, I'm always, people are always asking it like
- 12:45I'm dealing with this and there's a, there's always a book
- 12:48coming to my, Oh, they, you should read this or Oh, you're,
- 12:52you're thinking, here's something that might help you
- 12:54think through. And so if you've got some ideas
- 12:57that that aren't book based, that's that's great.
- 13:01But my recommendations are all going to be books.
- 13:02That's okay. What books?
- 13:04Top ones. But one that I was thinking
- 13:06about this year, if you are, if you're thinking about trying to
- 13:10get a gift for somebody who is maybe trying to figure out like
- 13:15what's going on in the world, what is really happening, kind
- 13:20of trying to figure out the bigger story.
- 13:23The tagline of this book is the story you live in is the story
- 13:27you live out. And so it's called All Things
- 13:31New. It's by Pete Hughes and he's a
- 13:36Anglican pastor in the UK, Spoke at New Room a few years ago.
- 13:43But he just kind of works through the story of scripture,
- 13:50drawing out some different things, trying to run some
- 13:53threads through the whole like chase down some threads through
- 13:56the whole story of scripture and just super helpful in reframing
- 14:04kind of the the whole story of scripture and then helping us
- 14:08find our place in that story, right?
- 14:11Because story of scripture ends in what is still for us in the
- 14:16future, right? It's still happening.
- 14:18We're somewhere in between Acts 28 and somewhere in Revelation,
- 14:24depending on how you interpret all that.
- 14:27So that, that would be my first one.
- 14:29What do you, what do you got? What's your number one
- 14:31recommendation? Right now one.
- 14:33Yeah. I'm going to have two, OK?
- 14:37Because I don't follow your rules, Scott.
- 14:39Yeah, I'm going to have one for super Bible nerds and then for
- 14:44people just trying to carve out some time with God.
- 14:48So super Bible nerds, the most helpful tool I've had for
- 14:54figuring out background about Bible and history and context
- 14:59and all the stuff like, OK, I didn't go to seminary.
- 15:02Well, I'm in seminary now, but like when I read this, I didn't
- 15:04go to seminary. I didn't take Greek, I didn't
- 15:06take Hebrew. I don't know all the history and
- 15:09stuff like that. I want to know that, but I also
- 15:12don't want someone to shove their opinions down my throat
- 15:15and point me in their direction instead of like, just give me
- 15:20the additional information and I'll go with it as like as I see
- 15:24fit. And so the IVP Bible Background
- 15:29Commentary, New Testament by Craig S Keener has been that
- 15:35tool for me. He's just a nerd that provided
- 15:40all of his wisdom, not even wisdom like findings into a book
- 15:46verse by verse. And we'll lay things out like
- 15:50this is how Jews would have understood it.
- 15:52This is how people, Jesus's time may have understood it.
- 15:55Since then, people have thought these three main things.
- 15:59This is the most popular. This is why some people think
- 16:02this like it's not a this is one way the highway.
- 16:05This is how it's interpreted and the only way it's interpreted.
- 16:08And then you go to a different commentary and you're like,
- 16:10wait, this is very different than what that person just said.
- 16:13And so, yeah, he just very good at laying it out and in plain
- 16:18enough language that I can understand it yeah, as well.
- 16:23So that's my Bible nerd recommendation.
- 16:25There's also a study Bible version of that, right?
- 16:28The NIV Bible background study Bible.
- 16:32Keener did the New Testament and John Walton did the Old
- 16:36Testament and it's. Just like my Christmas.
- 16:40List study Bible format where it's got like different notes
- 16:43and stuff related to things as it's as you're working through
- 16:45scripture. Yeah.
- 16:47An all in one it probably won't have nearly as in text.
- 16:50It wouldn't be as in depth for sure.
- 16:52This one is bigger than some Bibles, and it just covers New
- 16:57Testament, Right. And it doesn't even include the
- 16:59bibliography because it would double the size of the book.
- 17:02Like all the references it's referencing.
- 17:05Yeah. To resources to make the claims.
- 17:07And then one that helped me with that sermon I recently did with
- 17:13the Philadelphia Zacchaeus kind of story.
- 17:17That's part of my my current class, which it's finals week.
- 17:21So be praying even though it's Thursday.
- 17:23If you're if you hear this on Thursday, keep praying, but it's
- 17:26called meeting God in Scripture by Jan Johnson, a hands on guide
- 17:32to Electio Davina 40 guided meditations.
- 17:36It is just an incredible step by step walking through a
- 17:41scripture, praying, guiding you through some questions.
- 17:45And so for me, it's OK, I'm having trouble carving out time
- 17:49with God and when I do, I don't know what to do.
- 17:53If you're that person or if you know someone that feels like
- 17:57they don't have time for God to be able to provide them this
- 18:00tool and even just shoot them the goal of once a week.
- 18:03It doesn't have to be a daily thing.
- 18:04Once a week, carve out 1015 minutes with God and just go
- 18:09through the table of contents. You don't have to go and order
- 18:12what theme sticks out to you. Pick that one and just work your
- 18:15way through it. It's been very fruitful for
- 18:17those that I've gifted it to and it's been fruitful for myself.
- 18:21And it's just really helpful to help you lock in and very
- 18:25intentional about that time with God.
- 18:28And so those would be my two book recommendations.
- 18:31Yeah. This holiday season.
- 18:33This holiday. We have 0 coupon codes.
- 18:34We do apologize. Yeah, sorry for that.
- 18:37You can go buy them for full price wherever you buy books.
- 18:40Do you have? Another book recommendation.
- 18:42Couple others, 2 that we've been, I've been working through
- 18:46with the group that's together in the cohort we're calling the
- 18:50Forge. One is called Waking the Dead,
- 18:53it's by John Eldridge. The other is How to Hear God by
- 18:56Pete Craig. And both of those have just been
- 19:01so helpful. I, I chose them for that group
- 19:03because they've been formative for me in the way I think about
- 19:08things, think about the world, think about what it means to
- 19:10follow Jesus. So I would recommend those
- 19:13unreservedly. And then I was thinking, if
- 19:17you're buying for kids and you're looking for a book or, or
- 19:20you want to buy a book that you can read to some kids, couple
- 19:26ideas. One is called so the Green Ember
- 19:30by SD Smith. Great story.
- 19:32It's the first in the series. The whole series is good, just
- 19:36kind of bringing some real truths down to some very
- 19:40approachable levels by some 4 kids.
- 19:45And the other would be the Wing Feather Saga by Andrew Peterson,
- 19:51another series. I think that that one's four
- 19:54books that our family has just loved.
- 19:58Just great stories, great stories.
- 20:02And a show coming out, I think. That they are working on an
- 20:05animated version yeah I think it's in season 3 now.
- 20:08Oh wow yeah. But the books are way better way
- 20:12better always because there's you just can't compress it down
- 20:15enough for a show anyway. So those are my recommended any
- 20:20any kid or youth recommendations or.
- 20:23My youth already know all my work, I mean, but if you have,
- 20:26if you have youth that maybe aren't in our youth group, fix
- 20:30that. Problem solved.
- 20:34Kids stuff, kids stuff. The one that I've come back to
- 20:40and I even showed it earlier I think this year.
- 20:42And one of my sermons is the biggest story Bible storybook.
- 20:47It's a definitely a thicker one, but it essentially like story by
- 20:52story goes through the Bible and tells it in a really for the
- 20:55most part, very understandable child level way.
- 21:00And each story ends with a prayer.
- 21:02And so there may be like 2 to 4 pages, excuse me, each story.
- 21:07And I've enjoyed it. I was worried like, you know,
- 21:10when you're compressing or altering scripture to make it
- 21:14easier and more digestible for kids, Like sometimes they can go
- 21:20awry, I would say. Yeah, you're always bringing in
- 21:24interpretation at that level. Writing it, they might try and
- 21:27really push you in a certain theological direction.
- 21:31And this one has been like solid but neutral.
- 21:34You're not going in a specific way.
- 21:37And, and it's funny, like I'm reading it and it'll, you know,
- 21:42just bring it down to a level that I'm not good at doing on my
- 21:44own. And beautiful artwork, every
- 21:47single page, incredible artwork. And so my boys love it, even
- 21:51even younger than Theo, after we read every single stories, like
- 21:54I want to see the animals. And then he opens up to the back
- 21:57and there's a lion and the whale and, you know, all that kind of
- 22:01stuff. And so, yeah, that's the the
- 22:04biggest story Bible storybook, I would say for youth, if they're
- 22:11not going to go to our youth group, that the best Bible that
- 22:14I've found for youth is called the NLT Teen Bible.
- 22:20And when you look it up, it's like a white, blue, black cover.
- 22:25And we'll, I'm sure Add all these books to the show notes so
- 22:28you can just click on links. And when I say we Scott will do
- 22:31that and that Bible, I think the hard covers, I think out of
- 22:38print, it's now soft cover or fake leather one.
- 22:42But the translation seems to be the easiest for our kids to
- 22:47read. Very close with the ESV if you
- 22:49find another ESV. But the supplemental information
- 22:53on the sides was just really useful and helpful for them to
- 22:57better understand what's going on in the Scriptures.
- 23:01And so I did thorough research with my own youth a while ago to
- 23:06be like, OK, which of these Bibles?
- 23:07We bought like over a dozen some Bibles and they weren't all teen
- 23:11specific because I hate it when it says teen or kids and all it
- 23:15is is it says it on the outside, maybe some colorful pictures on
- 23:18the inside, but it doesn't actually help them better
- 23:20understand it. And so we went through a whole
- 23:23plethora of Bibles and this was the most youth useful tool.
- 23:26So would that be the the Teen life Application study Bible
- 23:30NLT? Yes, yeah, that's the one.
- 23:34And so every time I have a kid that's like, can you get me a
- 23:36Bible? That's the one I grabbed for
- 23:38because it's it's the most helpful on their own time,
- 23:40right. You can get any Bible that they
- 23:42can read along with during church, during whatever.
- 23:45But if they're going to be navigating it alone and maybe
- 23:48not have the confidence or a person to reach out to with
- 23:52questions that that's available to them in their Bible for sure
- 23:56is a great tool. I'm going to push you because I
- 24:00hate books. Push me.
- 24:02What's something people can do, what's a gift they can provide
- 24:08to have potential profound life giving, meaningful experience,
- 24:16or yeah, those types of gift like Ron gave you that people
- 24:22can try and be intentional about this holiday season.
- 24:25Not everybody has a ministry job to offer someone.
- 24:28Sure. But if we strip it back, what
- 24:30are some of the more generalized opportunities that we can look
- 24:33for? I think the biggest gift you can
- 24:37ever give someone is yourself, right?
- 24:43It's, it's your time, it's your energy, it's your willingness to
- 24:51walk through life with them and through that to then have an
- 24:58opportunity to share some of the experiences you've had and, and
- 25:03the opportunities you've had. And so I think if you're, if
- 25:08you're trying to think of how to give someone an opportunity like
- 25:13that, it starts with walking closely with them and and giving
- 25:18them yourself. It might not always be
- 25:22convenient. It might not always seem
- 25:26beneficial to you in the moment. There might be some sacrifice
- 25:32involved with that. There's some vulnerability that
- 25:34has to be there. But I think the best gift you
- 25:38can give someone is yourself. As I as I posed a similar
- 25:41question to our youth, it was time.
- 25:47Just intentional time, being with someone, kind words.
- 25:52It's that time spent with people that lets you then understand
- 25:58where you can more come alongside them, right?
- 26:01It's you know you can say a nice word to a stranger walking down
- 26:05the street. It doesn't really matter though,
- 26:08because you don't know that person.
- 26:10Like it might make a difference in their day for sure.
- 26:12But when you really take the time to know someone and to let
- 26:16them know you, then when you offer an encouragement in the
- 26:21midst of a hard day or a hard season or whatever, it means so
- 26:25much more because you've walked with them through that.
- 26:28Yeah. And.
- 26:30And in the chaos of the holiday season and all the things going
- 26:35on, sometimes it's harder to be intentional about giving of our
- 26:40time. Yeah.
- 26:40And that kind of stuff, you know?
- 26:42And so to think back of the most meaningful things that someone's
- 26:46given you and making sure that maybe that shouldn't maybe gain
- 26:50a little more attention and focus this holiday season
- 26:53compared to books. Although don't skip on the
- 27:00books, don't. Skip on the books.
- 27:04Well, that's our conversation for today, but that doesn't mean
- 27:06the conversation is over. We'd love to hear your thoughts
- 27:09on these topics as well. To ask a question about anything
- 27:13we've discussed in this episode or to join the conversation, you
- 27:16can head over to fumccollingswood.org/podcast.
- 27:21Thanks for being part of this conversation.
