- 1:15All right, we will get these flawless.
- 1:20We will get them cleaned up, boys.
- 1:23I'm very stoked because today we get to talk about a movie that I
- 1:28don't know if people think that we like or don't like.
- 1:32What? What do you think would give it
- 1:35away? I just, I don't, I think the
- 1:38kids call it glazing. I think I am glazing the movie I
- 1:46think, but it was my. Glazing on this podcast.
- 1:49We do a good amount of glazing. That's because we love arts.
- 1:52We love when people create awesome things, and we love to
- 1:55champion awesome things. If that's glazing, I'm sorry,
- 1:59I'm glazing but I can't help it. I'm not sorry.
- 2:02I'm not sorry, we're nerds. We're nerds at the end of the
- 2:04day, like what the fuck? Everybody, if you have Toxic
- 2:07Avenger stuff, let's see it if the mask didn't give it away for
- 2:11the YouTube look at all of this Toxie stuff.
- 2:14And boys, I'm going to the we're going to the premiere and I'm
- 2:18going to go smell good. That is Toxic Avenger Cologne.
- 2:23Toxie is not someone I look at and I go, I want to smell like
- 2:25that guy. You know what, dude?
- 2:28Smells fantastic. What does it smell like?
- 2:32Oh man, I don't even know. My wife says it's not really
- 2:34good though. You know, I can't, I can't
- 2:37describe it. Just you can't.
- 2:37Describe it. It's like we're all going to,
- 2:39we're all going to gather around Nick when we go to the movie,
- 2:42we're all going to smell him and we'll report back about how the
- 2:45smell was. Be on his neck and just.
- 2:48Oh my God, just getting a good width.
- 2:51But it smells good though. But everybody, we are talking
- 2:53about the 1984 cult classic The Toxic Avenger, created by Troma,
- 3:00made by Lloyd Kaufman, the very beautiful man that he is.
- 3:04And this movie is one of the movies that kicked it off for
- 3:07me. The Toxic Avenger is a classic
- 3:09age-old bullying story, right? Like Melvin is bullied, he's
- 3:14picked on, he's the mop boy. It's bullying that ends up in
- 3:19tragedy that ends up in superhero dumb New Jersey's
- 3:23first superhero, which is the Toxic Avenger.
- 3:26This movie is Melvin's journey through becoming the toxic
- 3:29Avenger, through becoming a superhero, a cult icon, a cult
- 3:34classic. And this movie paved the way for
- 3:38a lot of zany action gore hero flicks.
- 3:43Almost like without Toxic Avenger, you don't get a lot of
- 3:48like the gonzo crazy style films that we have Toxic Avenger.
- 3:53I mean, James Gunn without, maybe without Toxic Avenger we
- 3:56don't get James Gunn. Who does Superman?
- 3:59No Guardians of the Galaxy. There you go.
- 4:01Toxic, I mean. James Gunn, whatever, whatever
- 4:05stuff that he did. Just anything, James, you know,
- 4:08people like James Gunn and fucking like everybody loves
- 4:13Stroma. You have to love Troma.
- 4:17OK, I'm talking about actors. Actors.
- 4:21Actors love. I mean, there, there are so many
- 4:26actors who and actors and movie creators and producers and
- 4:31directors who got their start with Troma.
- 4:35South Park. Yeah, that's Stone and Trey
- 4:38Parker. That's right.
- 4:39Cannibal the musical man like that is a huge thing for those
- 4:42guys. So but we're not here to talk
- 4:45strictly about trauma. We're here to talk about the
- 4:46movie. We're we can do it whole episode
- 4:48on trauma though, because of all like their their practices when
- 4:52filming how safe and just like on like how important it is for
- 4:57the movie to be shot and done right by Uncle Lloyd and
- 5:00everybody a part of the team like trauma is just above and
- 5:04beyond amazing. But we are here to talk about
- 5:06the toxic avenger again. This is Melvin's story.
- 5:09Everybody is getting the new Toxic Avenger on August 29th
- 5:12though, and that's a whole new story, whole new hero, and I
- 5:17don't think anybody is ready for that.
- 5:18And it has been so hard to bottle that up with Alex for me
- 5:22and Noah not to talk, discuss it, especially during this film.
- 5:24But. Yeah.
- 5:27Before we get into the actual movie, I want to hear your
- 5:29guys's first experience with The Toxic Avenger because we all
- 5:34love the monster. We, we, we love this franchise.
- 5:37We love this character. So where did you guys first see
- 5:40The Toxic Avenger? Who wants to start that?
- 5:44You go, Alex. OK, I I don't know how old I was
- 5:48when I first seen this movie. Well, I really don't know.
- 5:53It's been a very, very long time.
- 5:58Probably shoot, dude. I really don't know, like I
- 6:03really don't know, but like this is this is a comfort movie for
- 6:08me. I've like seen this flick.
- 6:12I can't tell you more than 100 times easily, easily.
- 6:21Just it's, I don't know what, like why I'm like tied up with
- 6:24my tongue right now on what to say about this movie.
- 6:27It's. Well, how did you see it the
- 6:29first time? I think I rented it.
- 6:34Blockbuster. More than likely.
- 6:35No mom and pop video stores. Oh hell yeah, that's the way to
- 6:39go back in the day. Block Blockbuster wanted to do
- 6:41your Social Security number back in the day and my pops was like,
- 6:43no, I haven't. Did they actually?
- 6:46Yeah, yeah, they did. Oh yeah.
- 6:48Fuck you, blockbuster. What are you going to do?
- 6:50What are you? Going to do.
- 6:51It's fucking weird. Just in case you don't return
- 6:54something we're going to fucking go after.
- 6:55You. Yeah.
- 6:56You better bring back Flubber or we're going to steal your
- 6:58identity. That's it.
- 7:00Oh, probably rented it around the same time I started watching
- 7:05Guyver. So like that makes that makes.
- 7:07Sense So like what, 1011? Yeah, that makes sense.
- 7:14So tracks. Yeah, Yeah.
- 7:16Lot more nudity that I should have been watching at that age.
- 7:19But the nudity is where we have the problem here, yeah.
- 7:25My my dad really didn't care about violence.
- 7:27It was more. The new America, See, growing up
- 7:30in America is so weird because overseas it's the violence.
- 7:33Here is the boobs. Yep, I think.
- 7:36America's just somewhat of a naturally violent place To kind
- 7:41of celebrate that over here, you know, some of the biggest like
- 7:44sports in America is like, like WWE and MMA.
- 7:49Yeah, it's true. And like, even like, football is
- 7:53like an overtly violent sport. Dude, this, this movie is just,
- 8:04I don't have like, there's no words for it.
- 8:06It's, it's the Toxic Avenger. Dude.
- 8:08It's one of the best movies ever fucking made.
- 8:10The hell as. As Cornball Y as it is, it's a
- 8:14great superhero flick. Did did like your friends ever
- 8:18talk about this movie? Did you ever, like, show it to
- 8:21anybody? No.
- 8:25At all straight up like Nope my my friends like.
- 8:29My friends. My friends were weird growing
- 8:31up. We didn't care about anything
- 8:33besides skateboarding and biking.
- 8:35See, I feel like, I feel like that kind of crowd would have
- 8:38liked this. Probably 1 of the dudes was
- 8:42super super Christian. He was an altar boy, so probably
- 8:44not. But he was skating and and
- 8:46riding bikes. I.
- 8:48Mean. Yeah, that's different.
- 8:49Was he smoking cigarettes too? No, he was smoking catnip.
- 8:55What? Where you're at, wherever you're
- 8:58at, Jory. There you go, dude.
- 9:02What? I didn't say anything about
- 9:03that. No, All right, Noah, take the
- 9:07mic. Alex, you're fucking grounded,
- 9:09bro. What?
- 9:10The fuck dude, He's so happy with it.
- 9:13So OK. I don't remember when it
- 9:16happened, but I was definitely probably in high school when
- 9:20Achievement Hunter started their theater mode show, which was
- 9:23sort of their mystery science theater type thing and they
- 9:25started watching trauma movies. They started watching Thanks
- 9:30Killing, I think was the first one they did.
- 9:33They I don't think they ever watched Toxic Avenger.
- 9:35But I remember when I noticed like all these movies were from
- 9:39trauma and I looked it up and then I went back in the catalog
- 9:42a little bit and I went through it and then I watched this.
- 9:45But at when I was doing that I was like going through all of
- 9:48them. So I was watching like Kabuki
- 9:50Man and thanks killing and Newcomb high and blood orgy at
- 9:54Beaver Lake. And.
- 9:56All the stuff. So it kind of all blurred
- 9:58together. But then over the years, we've
- 9:59watched Toxic Avenger a couple times.
- 10:03And I remember when we were gearing up to go to the
- 10:05premiere, I was like talking to some people about it 'cause they
- 10:08were like, what are you going to San Diego for?
- 10:10And I was a little bit surprised at how many people knew what the
- 10:13Toxic Avenger was. That's cool.
- 10:17Just people who you wouldn't expect.
- 10:18And they were like, Oh yeah, I know that thing.
- 10:21It's it's always shocking when you run into somebody's like,
- 10:24yeah, trauma. And it's like, I thought that
- 10:25was like my thing. It feels like it should be like,
- 10:31I want everybody to see these movies, right?
- 10:33But like, when you talk to people about it, it's almost
- 10:35like, well, this is this is my thing.
- 10:37I'm the weird guy. You're not the weird guy.
- 10:39Like that's how that's how I felt for so long with trauma
- 10:42films. You know what I mean?
- 10:43Like I, it was like something I kept close to my chest or like
- 10:46the Toxic Avenger, like I probably displayed all my Toxie
- 10:49stuff. I have toxic action figures,
- 10:51posters, the mask. Toxie Tattoos.
- 10:54I have a toxic Avenger tattoo. Yeah.
- 10:57Yeah, same. Yeah, Alex is.
- 10:58Toxic Avenger tattoo. You're the only one that doesn't
- 11:00have a Toxic Avenger tattoo. What are you doing, Noah?
- 11:03I need to get more in general and then maybe once I have a few
- 11:07more we could talk about a a toxic.
- 11:09One or or or a Sergeant Kabuki man tattoo.
- 11:12Or Sergeant Kabuki. Man, I don't know how well that
- 11:15would go over that. 'D be pretty fucking sweet,
- 11:17dude, Can I? Get I can get like the kabuki
- 11:19mask with the NYPD hat. That'd be sick.
- 11:22Dude that. 'D be something.
- 11:23It would I might have that. That's so sweet you got.
- 11:26Hijacked your shit. No.
- 11:28SO when you first saw the film, what was your initial reaction
- 11:32for for Toxic Avenger? For me, I was just like, Oh
- 11:35yeah, it's like more of more of the same because of the movies
- 11:39that I was watching, like back-to-back to back drama
- 11:42movies. Yeah.
- 11:44But like when you go back and you sort of look at it in the
- 11:47context, like of itself, it's a little bit different because it
- 11:51was really the first of these, like these big ones.
- 11:54Yeah. But the ones that have like any
- 11:55sort of staying power. Yeah, Toxic Avenger.
- 11:59Yeah. Yeah, it was just like the
- 12:01first, like classic of the series.
- 12:04Oh yeah, dude, this was the domino of this was like the
- 12:07first domino for a lot of people.
- 12:09When you think of trauma, when you're really diving in, a lot
- 12:12of people start with Toxic Avenger.
- 12:14I think that's where I started. I think I was like 9 years old
- 12:19when I first saw this movie. I was at my grandma's house.
- 12:23My Uncle Keith was living there for a long time because he was
- 12:26on tour constantly. So it's another instance of my
- 12:29cool uncle. Like I got all the video game
- 12:32love from where I got all my movies and comic love from.
- 12:35This was another thing that I definitely took from him where I
- 12:41was just snooping around, you know, I saw his bowl and his
- 12:44little dresser. I didn't know what the fuck it
- 12:46was. You know, I saw shit I probably
- 12:48shouldn't have seen or touched, but there this movie was.
- 12:52It was just this fucking crazy silhouette.
- 12:56And it's just that the Toxic Avenger in my grandma.
- 12:59VHS, yeah. Yeah, it was VHS, pretty much
- 13:02that right there. I think it was all white though
- 13:06with that in the center. I don't think it had the
- 13:08bordering on it. Yeah, this is the collector's
- 13:10edition. Yeah, but I remember my grandma
- 13:13just be like, oh, what are you watching today, honey?
- 13:15I'm like, I don't know. I found this upstairs.
- 13:17She was all right, cool. And she just like, have fun.
- 13:19She walked away and I just watched it front to back and I
- 13:23was just blown the fuck away as a child.
- 13:25Like I was like, whoa, this is literally the craziest shit I've
- 13:28ever seen. Because not only this movie,
- 13:30like at times hypersexual in like funny ways, not like
- 13:35demeaning ways. It's funny.
- 13:37I think it's always, it's always pretty tasteful.
- 13:40It is. It's trauma like they don't
- 13:42like. There's lines they will cross.
- 13:44This movie has certain language that hasn't aged well.
- 13:47This movie has certain jokes that hasn't aged well.
- 13:50But I will openly still laugh through this entire film because
- 13:56I know that the intentions are right.
- 14:00It's a movie at the end of. The day it's a movie and these
- 14:02are characters but. Well, it is very much a product
- 14:04of its time as well. It's an 80s flick, dude.
- 14:06Like this is just shit that was happening.
- 14:08So I just remember seeing all that blood, the transformation
- 14:14scene and going I didn't know because I, you know, I hadn't
- 14:18seen The Thing just yet, like John Carpenter's The Thing.
- 14:22And I was like, I didn't know you could do shit like this in a
- 14:25movie. Like, this is crazy to me and I
- 14:29just remember talking about it at school and that's one of the
- 14:31films that got me in big trouble at school talking about because
- 14:34then other kids started asking their parents if they can watch
- 14:37The Toxic Avenger and I just. Remember, parents like look into
- 14:40it. They were not happy.
- 14:42About that, they're not happy about that.
- 14:44And then or like I remember I stole the VHS from my uncle as
- 14:48well at one point and I brought it to a friend's house for like
- 14:52a sleepover. We watched The Toxic Avenger and
- 14:55his parents were like, what the fuck, Nick?
- 14:58And I'm like, I don't know, because look, my, my house is
- 15:01very open. I could watch that in the open.
- 15:03My mom would be like, you OK? I'm like, yeah, it's just a
- 15:06movie. She'd be like, that's good
- 15:08enough for me. Like you got it.
- 15:10Yeah, all right, cool, you know, But I just, I love this film.
- 15:14I it, this opened many doors for me in the sense of movie
- 15:18watching. It made me respect high budget
- 15:22filmmaking, but it made me respects the like the low budget
- 15:27end of films too because it shows what can be accomplished
- 15:30if you just make something you love.
- 15:34And that's why I love The Toxic Avenger.
- 15:36Like nothing but blood, sweat, mops and tears went into this
- 15:40film like it is so fucking well done.
- 15:45So fucking well done. Hey, dude, it's it's it's it's
- 15:51just amazing. I I can't like I I'm going to
- 15:54tell you straight up. This is a perfect movie for me
- 15:56rating wise, just Melvin and Melvin's toxic avenger and me
- 16:01and Noah will lightly talk. No spoilers, Alex, but we will.
- 16:05Lightly. I'm not.
- 16:06Going to say anything? Not nothing about the new one.
- 16:09No, I don't think we can. Oh.
- 16:11Fuck. All right, Alex in here going.
- 16:12Do you want to know the budget of this toxic Avenger?
- 16:15Yes, I do. $500,000. That's it.
- 16:20There's a lot of stuff going on, man.
- 16:21They got. Like that's a lot for 86 dude.
- 16:25Kind of is. 84. Yeah, 84. 80. 4.
- 16:29Let's take another movie that came out in 1984.
- 16:32I. Mean it's still like kind of a
- 16:33small budget that if you think about it, whatever it would
- 16:36equate to nowadays. I don't know, it's 1986.
- 16:39I, you know, I just take a random movie like Doom 1984.
- 16:42That was at a budget of $45 million.
- 16:46Oh fuck. Yeah.
- 16:49It's this is still like a micro. Budget and we saw how that.
- 16:52Went yeah, no, this is this is filmmaking done right by a team
- 16:56who wanted to make something sweet and they made something
- 17:00sweet again. It's the classic bullying story.
- 17:03It is it's the underdog story. It's a bullying story.
- 17:07It's overcoming that in a obviously in the most violent of
- 17:11ways, right. Like, And Toxie is not a perfect
- 17:14hero. That is the beauty of it all.
- 17:16He is a hero, but he also has a revenge plot where he's going to
- 17:22kill the bullies. And he does in the most
- 17:25fantastical ways, even if we don't get to see one of the
- 17:29deaths, which is Bozo's girlfriend.
- 17:33I never understood Julie. Yeah, Julie, I never understood
- 17:36why you stressed me out. You stressed me out.
- 17:41You know, I kind of sympathize with Bozo.
- 17:43I don't want to be stressed out either.
- 17:45I don't. Want to be stressed out either,
- 17:46but bozo's a bad fella. Dude, I'm stressed out all the
- 17:48time and I'm not sitting over here crushing kids skulls with a
- 17:52fucking Pontiac like it. Was a Camaro actually?
- 17:56Whatever. Shall we say this movie shy's
- 18:00not away from showing anything dying?
- 18:04No. And Noah pointed out during the
- 18:07diner season, because that's arguably one of the dopest
- 18:10action sequences, which obviously, Alex, you've seen the
- 18:13trailer for the new Toxic Avenger, yes.
- 18:15So you know that there's a homage to it.
- 18:18There's a There's a diner scene in the new.
- 18:20One we won't we which we won't get into.
- 18:22But that scene is so fucking good and at one point no one
- 18:28goes. I forgot how like just mean this
- 18:30feels. Yeah, the action in this is
- 18:33really good, like better than it has any right to be.
- 18:35You can definitely like when somebody does, they do like a
- 18:39flying kick. You're like, well, that guy
- 18:40actually knows how to do that. That's for real.
- 18:42It's not just some, It's not just some guy.
- 18:45No, dude, it's all fucking just so done so well.
- 18:49I love this fucking movie. I love this fucking movie, dude.
- 18:53Yeah, like it not. Damn that.
- 18:58I should say that it's like you're not kitchen scene, but
- 19:02that restaurant scene is probably like one of the best
- 19:04action fighting scenes in any movie out there.
- 19:09Pick that Kingsman church scene, no.
- 19:14I would. It's good for for.
- 19:15What it is, yes, Like it is definitely one of those scenes
- 19:20where it's it's it's a very important and very influential
- 19:25scene because it just paves the way for so much cool shit in
- 19:30films. Like that's what this movie does
- 19:32though. It, it paves the way like you
- 19:34could do what you want in the film if it's a cool fucking idea
- 19:38and you put it to the screen and it's done right.
- 19:41Like this is what you get. Just something cool.
- 19:45And I just, I just, yeah, the kids would say this is glazing.
- 19:49Yeah, I'm glazing. This film.
- 19:51It's just, it's fucking good. Like if you have not seen the
- 19:54Toxic Avenger, you need to go see the Toxic Avenger.
- 19:57Definitely worth if you're into any of the stuff we talked
- 20:01about, this is going to be like, I feel like trauma kind of is a
- 20:06gateway because they are sort of they're like more mainstream
- 20:11than some of the movies like that we've watched.
- 20:15Yeah. I feel like that the Toxic
- 20:17Avenger and then you kind of getting into these lower budget
- 20:21independent movies is a good way to sort of get into that space
- 20:24if you're trying to get somebody in.
- 20:27You think so? Yeah, well, and I also think
- 20:30this is good for one like would be film makers to see shit like
- 20:33this. Like I, I absolutely, I mean, I,
- 20:37I think what better way than to see how did Troma do it?
- 20:40OK, they just did it right. They got a budget, I understand
- 20:45that. But there was ways in which they
- 20:46went about it. I mean, and Troma takes people
- 20:50in. That's another thing, like if
- 20:52you are an aspiring filmmaker, people have had their starts at
- 20:56trauma James gone, like we said earlier, like it's it's it's
- 21:02incredible what they do. And I think, yeah, this is
- 21:04definitely a way to get into movies and just have learned
- 21:09that love and respect for the films.
- 21:11But also it's a way for, again, would be film makers to get into
- 21:15filmmaking. A lot of the low budget corny
- 21:19flicks that we love probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for
- 21:24Trauma and Toxic Avenger. Exactly.
- 21:28I think definitely of the trauma movies, Toxic Avenger is the one
- 21:31that people know the most or the most likely to know.
- 21:38But the but the movie is like aside from itself, the think the
- 21:42legacy of in the the long lasting effects of the movie are
- 21:48like they're it's just a really interesting thing to explore and
- 21:53look into. I would love a deeper
- 21:56documentary on like what it was right like there are there are
- 22:02documentaries about it, but I would love like an actual like
- 22:05big time document and I could be wrong.
- 22:07If there's anybody in the tromosphere who can correct me
- 22:12on that, please let us know at our e-mail wasdbeyond@gmail.com.
- 22:17Reach out to us, let us know they, hey, this is a movie you
- 22:19should check out that is all about this.
- 22:23But man, oh man, I just, I'd love learning more and more and
- 22:27more about this film. Noah, are we going to Noah's
- 22:31fact Corner today? No, I don't have any facts.
- 22:36Really. Fucking damn it we.
- 22:38Didn't. We didn't have time.
- 22:39We didn't have time. That was a good segue too.
- 22:41I was, I was so into it. You know, that health, all the
- 22:46health club stuff is, is shot in Brooklyn.
- 22:48I don't know if there's a fact for you.
- 22:50The all the outside stuff. I I like, I like that they have
- 22:53it. It's outside and it's clearly
- 22:55like a retail with apartments on top.
- 22:57Yeah. And the scene where like Melvin
- 23:00runs out of the pool and then he, he gets out a second story
- 23:04window. So does that mean that the pool
- 23:05is on the second floor? That's stressful.
- 23:10You know, but, but stuff like that, there's a shot where that,
- 23:14Alex pointed out. You can see a crew member's
- 23:15foot. That's fun.
- 23:17It is fun and. Never noticed that, Adam.
- 23:20Yeah, I never noticed that before.
- 23:21Dozens of times watching this flick.
- 23:23The green on screen box for the goo toxic waste.
- 23:28It looked so green. I was like damn it.
- 23:30Things like a 4K version. Like it?
- 23:32I think it's probably so. Fucked good.
- 23:34I mean, I don't know if they did any digital upscaling to it, It
- 23:37didn't really look like it. It just was very toxic.
- 23:41Yeah, you should see this movie. This is a great gateway into
- 23:48horror. A great gateway into not even
- 23:51horror or like, really, it's not it's not a.
- 23:54Horror, it's just, I would just, it's just like low budget
- 23:57movies. Yeah, it's campy, it's fun, it's
- 24:00gory, it's got boobs. You like boobs.
- 24:04You know, boobs like you like. Go look at that. 1980s Music.
- 24:10Yeah, 19 days is your body rocks.
- 24:13You know, you hear that song. Couple of good times, but yeah,
- 24:16this, I'm giving this movie like a 5 out of five.
- 24:19It's a perfect rating. It's perfect.
- 24:21Yeah, well, we're we're pretty sure we're all at the same.
- 24:24Are we all this this, this, this gets like the Golden Mop award,
- 24:29You know, this movie. Is just 5 golden mop.
- 24:32Yeah, 5 out of five. Golden Mop.
- 24:35Yeah, dude, it's so good, man. And check it out before.
- 24:40I would suggest watching this before you go see the new Toxie.
- 24:45I'd say watch this now or watch it, you know, get if you're
- 24:48going with a group, get the group together beforehand and
- 24:50watch this. I mean you have to man, it's
- 24:53it's such A and if not, watch it after see the new one and see
- 24:57where it came from. Either way, as long as you watch
- 24:59this one, you will have a blast. And there's three more toxies
- 25:03that we can watch. I will say that there were some
- 25:07things that happened up on this rewatch that I remembered some
- 25:11things that happened in the new one and I went, oh.
- 25:15Yep. We won't say it, Alex.
- 25:18Not gonna. Say more, not gonna say.
- 25:20Listen more, I said nothing, so go see. 9 days.

- 25:50we're going that what are you talking about?
- 25:53Maybe we'll go to Applebee's. Yeah.
- 25:58There's a Texas Roadhouse right there.
- 26:00There is basement, there is basement burger bar.
- 26:02I would never. That's a.
- 26:05That's a, not that one. Oh, is it bad?
- 26:09I don't know, I've never been to it.
- 26:11Then what? But I only go to the one in OH.

- 26:17reference for you. You guys are telling me I
