- 0:01Practitioners of spiritual and religious disciplines.
- 0:05Inevitably are confronted with the habits and expectations of
- 0:10the physical mind in day-to-day life.
- 0:14There is a constant pressure to provide regular meals.
- 0:17That suit. The tastes of the individual
- 0:19comfortable surroundings to support the day-to-day life and
- 0:23provide a safe and secure shelter.
- 0:27There is the inevitable pressure for regularity in the regiment.
- 0:30Owen and the physical demands for acquisition of the food
- 0:34clothing, shelter, sexual satisfaction Etc.
- 0:39That come with life in the world.
- 0:42This does not speak to the added demands of the vital nature that
- 0:46can lead to Greed lust, excessive hunger, Etc, but to
- 0:51the basic needs and habits of the physical nature
- 0:56practitioners have tried through the centuries.
- 1:00Many strategies to address these needs.
- 1:03Some try to suppress them forcefully and even use self
- 1:07torture or extreme fasting or privation in the desert as ways
- 1:12to school, the physical nature, to not put attention on these
- 1:16things and to thereby allow the focus on the spiritual or
- 1:21religious Quest. These methods, however,
- 1:24frequently tend to accentuate the focus and difficulty and
- 1:29rather than solving the problem they tend to actually Embed them
- 1:34deeply in the day-to-day undertakings of the Seeker.
- 1:38Suppression has been compared to coiling a spring.
- 1:41Putting it under extreme pressure.
- 1:43Such that when it finds an outlet, it explodes with an
- 1:48increased force of action. Others try to solve these issues
- 1:53by simplifying the life in some cases, by adopting the begging
- 1:58bowl and relying on what is received from one day to the
- 2:02next as the sustenance for the body again, much time and effort
- 2:07tends. To be devoted to this activity.
- 2:11SRI aurobindo acknowledges that suppression tends not to work.
- 2:16And he does counsels that the impulses and habitual thoughts,
- 2:20be observed, but not focused on or accentuated.
- 2:26Rather to keep the focus and aspiration fixed on the
- 2:29spiritual dedication and bring a state of quiet and peaceful
- 2:34acceptance that does not get bothered by the actions of the
- 2:39physical nature. Eventually, with the Advent of
- 2:43the higher super, mental Force into the physical mind, and
- 2:47physical body, the power to modify, or remove, these
- 2:52habitual patterns, will come. But in the interim, it is best
- 2:57to focus on the path forward and minimize the attention, given to
- 3:02the habits of the physical mind and nature.
- 3:06SRI aurobindo writes, quote. What you have now seen and
- 3:11described in your letter is the ordinary activity of the
- 3:14physical mind, which is full of ordinary habitual and constantly
- 3:19recurrent thoughts. And is always busy with external
- 3:23objects and activities. What used to trouble you before?
- 3:28Was the vital mind, which is different for that is always
- 3:31occupied with emotions, passions desires, reactions of all kinds
- 3:38to the context of Life and the behavior of others.
- 3:43The physical mind also can be responsive with these things,
- 3:47but in a different way, its nature is less that of Desire
- 3:51than of Habitual activity, small common interests, pains and
- 3:56Pleasures. If one tries to control or
- 3:59suppress it, it becomes more active to deal.
- 4:05With this mind. Two things are necessary.
- 4:07One not so, So much to try to control or fight with, or
- 4:11suppress it as to stand back from it.
- 4:15One looks at it and sees what it is but refuses to follow, its
- 4:20thoughts or run about among the objects.
- 4:23It pursues remaining at the back of the Mind, quiet and separate
- 4:29into two, practice quietude and concentration in this.
- 4:33Separateness until the habit of quiet takes, hold of the
- 4:38physical mind. And and replaces the habit of
- 4:41these small activities. This of course, takes time and
- 4:46can only come by practice. It is the nature of the physical
- 4:51mind, not to believe, or accept anything that is super physical
- 4:56unless it is enlightened and compelled by the Light to do it.
- 5:00Do not identify yourself with this mind.
- 5:03Do not consider it as yourself but only as an obscure
- 5:08functioning of nature, call down the light into it until it is
- 5:13compelled to believe. And quote, reference, SRI
