- 0:22Speaker 1: Welcome to jack zam Ka, Nannie Stevens here, Brian Sexton,
- 0:25Speaker 1: John Oser coming to you live from Hertfordshire, England. Good
- 0:29Speaker 1: morning to those in Jacksonville. Afternoon here in the UK.
- 0:32Speaker 1: But we're getting ready for another London matchup at Wembley,
- 0:35Speaker 1: so we're going to get into our big things for
- 0:37Speaker 1: you today, brought to you by GEAJ Government Employees Health Association.
- 0:41Speaker 1: The first big thing is away we go, because the
- 0:45Speaker 1: way we go. We left early this week to get
- 0:47Speaker 1: out here practice early. It's a little bit different than
- 0:50Speaker 1: traditionally maybe the team has done at certain points. We've
- 0:52Speaker 1: been playing two games here in London the past couple
- 0:54Speaker 1: of years. But Liam Cohen talked a little bit about
- 0:56Speaker 1: what went into the decision making.
- 1:02Speaker 2: It was just something that when we talked about in
- 1:04Speaker 2: the off season that this could be a possible opportunity
- 1:08Speaker 2: for a new everything to maybe be together for an
- 1:12Speaker 2: extended period of time. It just so happens. I told
- 1:16Speaker 2: the team that what a perfect time for this to
- 1:18Speaker 2: come up, that we're coming off of a tough loss
- 1:22Speaker 2: and we've got to face a little adversity as a team. Well,
- 1:27Speaker 2: now we're together for an extended period of time in
- 1:31Speaker 2: a new setting, in a different place. Obviously, this organization
- 1:35Speaker 2: has had a lot of familiarity with making this trip
- 1:38Speaker 2: and I think our ops travel, everybody that is involved
- 1:42Speaker 2: in it is you know, really gets it.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So obviously the location isn't new. We stay at the
- 1:56Speaker 1: Grove every year, but coming early, I know the team
- 1:59Speaker 1: has done both throughout the years. Brian but Lia Cohen said,
- 2:02Speaker 1: you know that when they went through all the logistics,
- 2:04Speaker 1: they wanted to kind of get out here early, get established,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and take the time delay out of it.
- 2:08Speaker 3: But two things stand out.
- 2:09Speaker 4: When they would go on Thursday night, land on Friday
- 2:11Speaker 4: practice and practice Saturday, they talked about getting you know
- 2:15Speaker 4: that feeling back, feeling.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Good on Sunday.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Obviously, coming early gives you a chance to feel good
- 2:20Speaker 4: by the time you get to the practice field a
- 2:23Speaker 4: little bit later today. And the other thing is, and
- 2:25Speaker 4: you guys probably notice this too. You know, we get
- 2:27Speaker 4: going through training camp in the preseason and there's people
- 2:30Speaker 4: that we don't know all that well that we haven't
- 2:32Speaker 4: met on a new staff, players and support staff, and
- 2:35Speaker 4: you know, at breakfast this morning, I was talking to
- 2:37Speaker 4: somebody that I had really never.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Talked to or met didn't know what they did.
- 2:41Speaker 4: So there's something to that waking up and walking down
- 2:45Speaker 4: to breakfast and saying good morning where you normally wouldn't
- 2:47Speaker 4: and being around people and getting to know them a
- 2:49Speaker 4: little bit better. And when you consider we're in week
- 2:52Speaker 4: seven of this brand new program, there's some value to that.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Yeah, nobody will tell you that it's not a good
- 2:57Speaker 5: camaraderie experience for the team. The only way it wouldn't
- 3:01Speaker 5: be is that they didn't like each other, and you
- 3:03Speaker 5: don't get this idea from this team at all. I
- 3:06Speaker 5: think Liam also this week, really wants to take some
- 3:09Speaker 5: time in practice and really work on the penalties, really
- 3:12Speaker 5: emphasize that. I don't know how much it's gonna be
- 3:15Speaker 5: emphasized when you're sitting around the rooms talking to each other,
- 3:17Speaker 5: but having everybody in one place, one focus, maybe a
- 3:23Speaker 5: touch of a training camp feel, maybe the message will
- 3:29Speaker 5: be a little more received on that front as well.
- 3:32Speaker 1: It's like a big thing today is staying put because
- 3:34Speaker 1: while the team traveled on an overnight flight on Monday,
- 3:38Speaker 1: Devin Lloyd, who was dealing with a calf injury, didn't
- 3:40Speaker 1: make the trip out here, which obviously has been having
- 3:43Speaker 1: a tremendous beginning to this season. John, when you're looking
- 3:46Speaker 1: at you know, even when he wasn't able to play
- 3:48Speaker 1: against the Seahawks, it was noted when he wasn't out
- 3:51Speaker 1: there is this concern long term.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Well, I don't think it's a concern long term. I
- 3:55Speaker 5: think what you're looking at. And Brian, you and I
- 3:58Speaker 5: thank you talking about earlier in the week. Now you're
- 4:01Speaker 5: Devin Lloyd down, Written Strange down, Quinton Morris, who's the
- 4:05Speaker 5: backup tight end. You're sort of maybe still down tra
- 4:10Speaker 5: Trayvon Walker full effectiveness, you were down Robert Hainsey the
- 4:13Speaker 5: other night. And I know it's questions ago about Devin. Sorry,
- 4:20Speaker 5: but you're in a situation where that's four or five
- 4:23Speaker 5: key guys that aren't going one hundred percent. Uh, this
- 4:27Speaker 5: is next men up and they've really got a play
- 4:29Speaker 5: well to get to the buy somehow get through this one,
- 4:33Speaker 5: get some of these guys back. But they're down some
- 4:35Speaker 5: core guys right now.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yeah, let me in just to see where Hainesy is.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Obviously we heard good things about what Jodan Bnheim did
- 4:41Speaker 4: last week, but Hainsey, you just get the sense he
- 4:44Speaker 4: would have been an addition because of his knowledge of
- 4:47Speaker 4: the offense. Again, especially against a team like Seattle that
- 4:51Speaker 4: plit so much. In the case of Devin Lloyd, you
- 4:53Speaker 4: talked about your playmaker on defense and five takeaways. Ventro
- 4:56Speaker 4: Miller comes in and he's very good against the run.
- 4:59Speaker 4: There's no drop off, But he's not going to be
- 5:01Speaker 4: the guy who gets your sacks in interceptions and forced
- 5:04Speaker 4: fumbles and things like that. I mean, maybe he grabs
- 5:06Speaker 4: one or two, he's not the same way. You know,
- 5:09Speaker 4: you look at a team like San Francisco and they
- 5:12Speaker 4: lose Nick Bosa early, and they lost Fred Warner this week,
- 5:15Speaker 4: do you have any doubt that they'll find a way
- 5:18Speaker 4: to stay relevant or to play well.
- 5:20Speaker 3: That's what this team has to do.
- 5:21Speaker 4: They've got to play well and execute their assignment and
- 5:25Speaker 4: find a way, as John mentioned, just to get to
- 5:29Speaker 4: the bye week.
- 5:30Speaker 5: And except for Lloyd, really talking about some guys who
- 5:32Speaker 5: are sort of subtly very you know, I think Trayvon's
- 5:35Speaker 5: the best player on defense, and I think Brent Strange
- 5:38Speaker 5: is the best player on offense. But nationally people don't
- 5:41Speaker 5: look at them and say, oh, the Jaguars are really
- 5:43Speaker 5: injured because having those two guys down, plus your playmaker
- 5:46Speaker 5: Devin plus Hainsey, this is the attrition time and after
- 5:52Speaker 5: this week if they win, what's ever being to say, Oh,
- 5:55Speaker 5: the buy is coming in a good time, right, so
- 5:56Speaker 5: you can get healthy. But they got to get through
- 5:58Speaker 5: this one.
- 5:58Speaker 4: The other side, what Trayvon is is, you know what,
- 6:00Speaker 4: from what I've been told, that club is going to
- 6:01Speaker 4: be on for a month, which means that by the
- 6:03Speaker 4: time you get to Las Vegas, you know, either side
- 6:05Speaker 4: of the bi week, perhaps he can be working from
- 6:07Speaker 4: a splint, you know, from a brace and get back
- 6:09Speaker 4: to himself. So one more game where it would seem
- 6:12Speaker 4: that he would be limited.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Our final big thing today is going to be making moves.
- 6:16Speaker 1: So that's with a question mark. We don't know if
- 6:17Speaker 1: yet for sure. Obviously James Gladstone not afraid to make
- 6:21Speaker 1: any sort of trade or move in the season. We've
- 6:23Speaker 1: already seen a couple. But Brian, I'm sure you're keeping
- 6:25Speaker 1: track of this. They're making cap space. They're converting a
- 6:28Speaker 1: lot of things into bonuses, restructuring contracts, most recently Greg Newsom.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But they're giving themselves some space to make a move
- 6:36Speaker 1: by the deadline if they have the ability to get
- 6:38Speaker 1: someone they.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Want newsom Walker, Little Deanmi Brown, three guys that they
- 6:43Speaker 4: massage the contracts to create room because they were up
- 6:45Speaker 4: against it. And I think we've all heard that we
- 6:48Speaker 4: can expect more from Baselli, Gladstone and Colin when it
- 6:52Speaker 4: comes to moves. They're not going to be shy about
- 6:54Speaker 4: going and finding players. And the question everyone has is Okay,
- 6:57Speaker 4: who right? I think for our per it's more what
- 7:01Speaker 4: what position? Where do they need help? And you'd say
- 7:03Speaker 4: somewhere on the defensive line. I guess you could say
- 7:05Speaker 4: edge as long as Trayvon is out, but you're expecting
- 7:08Speaker 4: to get him back, and tight end you're expecting Brenton
- 7:09Speaker 4: Strange back. But I think you could use it help
- 7:11Speaker 4: at safety and we saw that last week. And I
- 7:14Speaker 4: think you could use help against the run. They're pretty
- 7:17Speaker 4: solid against the run, but you could use someone that
- 7:19Speaker 4: can push the pocket a bit more than we've seen.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Yeah, you'd really like to get more push stouter up front.
- 7:26Speaker 5: I think we're back to a little bit where the
- 7:29Speaker 5: edge rushers Trayvon being out hurts, and then really nobody
- 7:33Speaker 5: to take any double team pressure off Josh. Somebody on
- 7:37Speaker 5: the front needs to get more push and I'm always
- 7:41Speaker 5: a little hesitant to say you can go get it.
- 7:44Speaker 5: You know, they went and got it with Newsome because
- 7:48Speaker 5: they gave up something. How much can you go get
- 7:51Speaker 5: right for the trade line? A trade deadline, I'm always
- 7:55Speaker 5: a little skeptical, but we'll see.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Yeah, two weeks until the trade but a little more
- 7:58Speaker 4: than two weeks. Two weeks from Tuesday is the tradeline.
- 8:00Speaker 4: So if there's something that you really feel like you
- 8:02Speaker 4: need coming out of the bye week, now's the time
- 8:04Speaker 4: to go get it.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Absolutely, stay with us here on Jagszam. Coming up after
- 8:08Speaker 1: the break, we'll do a little this so that as
- 8:09Speaker 1: we look ahead to the matchup with the Rams on Sunday.
- 8:26Speaker 1: For twelve years, dream Binders Homes have been proud to
- 8:28Speaker 1: call themselves the official home builders of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Visit dreambinders homes dot com for all of the available
- 8:33Speaker 1: inventory and go Jacks.
- 8:38Speaker 6: I think he's a great player, and he's a young
- 8:40Speaker 6: young kid, but when you talk to him, he doesn't
- 8:41Speaker 6: really seem like a rookie, doesn't talk like a rookie.
- 8:44Speaker 6: He knows the offense really well. Place hard, place stuff
- 8:48Speaker 6: and first start, I mean, hell, he's gonna get He's
- 8:50Speaker 6: gonna get a lot of opportunities in the NFL and
- 8:52Speaker 6: keep rolling, keep getting better. But he's nothing but great
- 8:55Speaker 6: things to say about him. He's awesome.
- 9:03Speaker 1: SPATR McCarey weighing in on Jonah Manheim, who got his
- 9:06Speaker 1: first NFL start at center last week, as Robert Hainsey's
- 9:11Speaker 1: dealing with an injury right now, when we look back
- 9:14Speaker 1: at the offensive line, obviously not a great performance as
- 9:16Speaker 1: a group. Most sacks we've seen more than we've seen
- 9:18Speaker 1: the first several weeks before that. But Monheim himself, I
- 9:23Speaker 1: don't know if this is getting help from those around him.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Didn't have a terrible day. It's just as a group
- 9:30Speaker 1: they really regressed. It Is it just the injuries brand
- 9:34Speaker 1: that's a tough one, or didn't they face a very
- 9:35Speaker 1: good team in Seattle.
- 9:36Speaker 4: There's a very good team in Seattle. And other than injuries, Kay,
- 9:40Speaker 4: I think we've seen inconsistencies. Right Walker Little has had
- 9:43Speaker 4: a good game and then had a game where you thought,
- 9:46Speaker 4: come on, I mean, why can't we play the same
- 9:49Speaker 4: level every single Sunday? And he's not the only player
- 9:52Speaker 4: that does that. We've seen Ezra Cleveland look strong and
- 9:54Speaker 4: then he had injury, and then he's had some issues
- 9:58Speaker 4: as well. The change at at center obviously doesn't help.
- 10:02Speaker 4: McCary had the knee, so it kind of plays into it.
- 10:05Speaker 4: You know, the best offensive lineman you've had is Anton Harrison,
- 10:09Speaker 4: and so yeah, I think inconsistency has been the first thing,
- 10:13Speaker 4: and then injuries the second.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Well, I don't think Brenton being out helped. Now obviously
- 10:18Speaker 5: he's not contributing or his absence isn't hurting you with sacks,
- 10:23Speaker 5: but it does hurt you with an option, you know,
- 10:25Speaker 5: to avoid sacks. Anton's been dealing.
- 10:29Speaker 7: With stuff.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Elbow, ezra is you know, not but McCary, So I
- 10:37Speaker 5: think a little bit of the dealing with things. I
- 10:40Speaker 5: also think if you recall, the Seattle game was the
- 10:44Speaker 5: first time that they were trailing second half, so all
- 10:48Speaker 5: of a sudden, it's the first time they're playing a
- 10:49Speaker 5: really good defensive front and in a situation where that
- 10:52Speaker 5: really really good defensive front knows you're going to throw.
- 10:54Speaker 5: They got back into the Kansas City game before halftime,
- 10:57Speaker 5: so they never got out of running when they wanted
- 11:01Speaker 5: to run. I think they had a lot to do
- 11:03Speaker 5: with the two and look Trevor held into a couple
- 11:08Speaker 5: of sacks I thought a little bit, So I think
- 11:10Speaker 5: a lot of circumstances. I think they'll be able to
- 11:12Speaker 5: get the offensive line. I don't think you're gonna have
- 11:13Speaker 5: another seven SAT game, No, but I think it's gonna
- 11:17Speaker 5: have to manufacture good pat I'm not sure it's naturally
- 11:22Speaker 5: a great offensive line. I think it's a good offensive line.
- 11:27Speaker 5: It's gonna have to play well to be good.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Well.
- 11:28Speaker 4: You have your hands full this week because Jared verse
- 11:30Speaker 4: Ann Young have been coming off the edge. They're better
- 11:34Speaker 4: edge rushers than we saw last week, and they're pretty
- 11:36Speaker 4: darn could on the inside as well. So you need
- 11:39Speaker 4: a consistent performance. I think you'll get it from Antony Harrison.
- 11:42Speaker 4: You hope that this is a week where you get
- 11:44Speaker 4: it from Walker Little and you you know, you've got
- 11:47Speaker 4: to just keep working those combinations and try to figure.
- 11:49Speaker 5: It out sometimes two in that kind of a game.
- 11:53Speaker 5: When they do get you time, you got to hit
- 11:55Speaker 5: it when it's there. We've seen that before and they
- 11:57Speaker 5: didn't take advantage of the times where you did have
- 11:59Speaker 5: a clean pocket, didn't take advantage of with big plays.
- 12:03Speaker 5: So I think it's going to be incumbent on the
- 12:05Speaker 5: offense to get some point, to get into a rhythm,
- 12:08Speaker 5: get up so that you're not playing against the chains
- 12:11Speaker 5: the whole. That's the other thing too, right, We didn't
- 12:13Speaker 5: be mentioned seven offensive penalties. Every one of those puts
- 12:17Speaker 5: you in bad down and distance. That's terrible for an
- 12:19Speaker 5: offensive line trying to block for the past.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Still little this or that. I'd love to get your
- 12:23Speaker 1: guys opinions on this. We mentioned both of these guys already.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Robert Hainsey and Brenton Stranger are both dealing with injuries
- 12:28Speaker 1: right now. Brenton we know we'll be out at least
- 12:30Speaker 1: a couple of weeks. Robert Hainsey working on coming back.
- 12:33Speaker 1: But who's the bigger loss right now? Because I feel
- 12:35Speaker 1: like they both play such a crucial role. We've talked
- 12:37Speaker 1: a lot about Brenton's pass catching and blocking is a
- 12:40Speaker 1: huge both of it feels like almost two people have
- 12:43Speaker 1: to replace him with. But also Hainesy's calming president in
- 12:46Speaker 1: the center position obviously or in the center of the line.
- 12:49Speaker 1: But I feel like the consistency and I think maybe
- 12:52Speaker 1: just mentality is something that was missing as well. Like
- 12:55Speaker 1: I don't think no knock on Manheim whatsoever, but just
- 12:57Speaker 1: the experience and having that in there, which one is
- 13:00Speaker 1: a bigger loss to you? And I guess in terms
- 13:03Speaker 1: of getting this team back on track on offense.
- 13:06Speaker 4: I think it's strange nothing you know, against a Hainsey.
- 13:10Speaker 4: I don't know that the drop off is as big
- 13:12Speaker 4: between Hainsey and Bnheim, who's a talented guy who the
- 13:15Speaker 4: jag Wars really liked coming out of the draft, as
- 13:18Speaker 4: it is between Brenton Strange and Hunter Long. I mean,
- 13:21Speaker 4: Hunter Long has a role on this team, no doubt.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Johnny Munt has some things he can do as well.
- 13:26Speaker 4: But without Breton Strange, it's tight end by committee, Whereas
- 13:29Speaker 4: with Brenton Strange you've got perhaps the second best tight
- 13:32Speaker 4: end in the league. You know, when you look at
- 13:34Speaker 4: the best all around tight ends in the league, the
- 13:36Speaker 4: first one is Greg Kittle.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I'm sorry, George Kittle. The next one is Brent Strange.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Yeah, and I agree. I think you miss Hainsey a
- 13:47Speaker 5: lot because of the veteran and I'm being able to
- 13:50Speaker 5: get you in the right calls, and he communicates very
- 13:54Speaker 5: well with Trevor, So I think there are some there's
- 13:56Speaker 5: a lot of intangible things physically they don't miss Hainesy
- 14:03Speaker 5: as much because of Monheim, but Britain Strange is really
- 14:08Speaker 5: good and really high level, and there's nobody on the
- 14:11Speaker 5: roster who can.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Do what he does.
- 14:12Speaker 3: What could he get him both back?
- 14:13Speaker 7: I like them both, John, I was gonna say as well.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I feel like we've talked a little bit about it,
- 14:17Speaker 1: but the run game was so successful right out of
- 14:19Speaker 1: the gate, and then without Strange in the game, I've
- 14:22Speaker 1: noticed a drop off. And I feel like he played
- 14:24Speaker 1: such a big role in that that maybe you think, oh,
- 14:27Speaker 1: it's mostly the offensive line, but Brent Strange's role in
- 14:30Speaker 1: that was so huge it's been hard to replicate without him.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Well.
- 14:33Speaker 5: For probably since early last year, anybody around here is
- 14:38Speaker 5: told you he's their best run blocker, regardless of position,
- 14:41Speaker 5: and maybe that's changed with some people this year. That
- 14:45Speaker 5: also contributes to the pass protection problems because they're not
- 14:51Speaker 5: as good and reliable a running team without Britain Strange.
- 14:54Speaker 5: And when you don't run as well and you've got
- 14:57Speaker 5: penalties flying up, then all of a sudden you're in
- 15:00Speaker 5: third and thirteen. Breton Strange creates a lot more The
- 15:04Speaker 5: loss of Breton Strange creates a lot more long down
- 15:07Speaker 5: and distance.
- 15:09Speaker 7: It all goes together.
- 15:10Speaker 3: When you lose.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Mayb would tell you Hainsey and Strange or maybe two
- 15:16Speaker 5: of their best three or four offensive players, and when
- 15:19Speaker 5: you lose both of them, you're down a lot.
- 15:21Speaker 4: You go back to the Texans game and Travis's seventy
- 15:25Speaker 4: yard run, I mean it was it was Strange who
- 15:27Speaker 4: came in with the wham block and sealed that. It
- 15:30Speaker 4: feels like in every game that he played, there was
- 15:33Speaker 4: a block or two that got Travis beyond the line
- 15:37Speaker 4: of scrimmage and got him, you know, one on one
- 15:39Speaker 4: where he could make a move in game, you know,
- 15:41Speaker 4: thirteen yards or twenty two yards, whatever it was. And
- 15:44Speaker 4: that's been missing without him, because he's that guy who
- 15:47Speaker 4: gets to the second level and makes a key block.
- 15:50Speaker 4: And that's that's what long in month don't necessarily give you.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Yeah, think about what the lack of footing, if you will,
- 15:58Speaker 5: you feel like you're on surefoot going out there defensively
- 16:01Speaker 5: when Trayvon's on the field and offensively when Breton's on
- 16:04Speaker 5: the field. When you don't have that, you lose part
- 16:07Speaker 5: of your foundation and really part of your stoutness and toughness.
- 16:11Speaker 5: This wants to be a physical team. Without those two guys,
- 16:13Speaker 5: they're not as physical a team.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Absolutely, Let's talk.
- 16:16Speaker 1: A little bit about the Rams of the opponent coming
- 16:18Speaker 1: up obviously very familiar to our new head coach and
- 16:21Speaker 1: our new GM James Gladstone, coming from that organization. Liam
- 16:25Speaker 1: Cohen obviously was there twice two different stints with McVeigh.
- 16:28Speaker 1: When you're playing against a coach or an organization that
- 16:32Speaker 1: you previously worked with and are kind of of the
- 16:34Speaker 1: same tree, do you feel like this is a personal
- 16:37Speaker 1: I'm curious what you guys think. Do you feel like
- 16:39Speaker 1: it's a pro where it's a con because they almost
- 16:41Speaker 1: know everything, y'all. You know everybody's little secret tricks, what
- 16:45Speaker 1: you're kind of getting into. And then do you try
- 16:47Speaker 1: to outsmart yourself to the point where you're undoing what
- 16:49Speaker 1: you would normally do on game prep?
- 16:51Speaker 3: You know.
- 16:52Speaker 4: My favorite story about this goes all the way back
- 16:54Speaker 4: to Super Bowl fourteen. Bud Carson, who had been the
- 16:57Speaker 4: defensive coordinator for the Steelers for years now, the coach
- 17:00Speaker 4: of the Rams and Terry Bradshaw got to the line
- 17:02Speaker 4: of scrimmage and barked out the first audible, and the
- 17:05Speaker 4: Rams adjusted and Terry called time out and went Chuck
- 17:07Speaker 4: Nolan said, they got him, they got the signals, and
- 17:11Speaker 4: so there is some of that, right, There's that idea
- 17:14Speaker 4: that Liam understands what the talent looks like and what
- 17:17Speaker 4: they like to do, and that McVeigh can understand what
- 17:21Speaker 4: Liam wants to do based on what they do on Sunday. Personally,
- 17:27Speaker 4: I think it's a pro to have a coach from
- 17:30Speaker 4: the Sean McVay tree. I went and looked between two
- 17:33Speaker 4: thousand and four and twenty sixteen, the Rams had four coaches,
- 17:37Speaker 4: three interim coaches, and one five hundred season.
- 17:40Speaker 3: That's it. Then McVeigh comes in.
- 17:41Speaker 4: He's in his eighth year and in the previous seven seasons,
- 17:44Speaker 4: John six playoff appearances, two super Bowl appearances, and a
- 17:48Speaker 4: super Bowl championship. Liam was there when they won, and
- 17:51Speaker 4: more importantly, they had one losing season after the super Bowl.
- 17:54Speaker 3: He was there for that as well.
- 17:56Speaker 4: So he's seen how McVeigh operates, how he puts the
- 17:59Speaker 4: team together, or how the game plan comes together, how
- 18:01Speaker 4: he adjusted through difficulty. I just think the overall advantage
- 18:05Speaker 4: for the Jaguars is to have a coach from that
- 18:09Speaker 4: Sean McVeagh tree.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Well, there are coaches who shaped the league. Joe Gibbs
- 18:13Speaker 5: and Bill Walsh did it for a long time, and
- 18:16Speaker 5: everything followed for a long time. Off that Sean McVay
- 18:20Speaker 5: is shaping the league. When you listen to Liam talk offense,
- 18:27Speaker 5: I'm learning things about offensive football that you know, I'm
- 18:31Speaker 5: not gonna say I thought I knew, but I've never
- 18:34Speaker 5: covered anything from this tree. So a lot of what
- 18:38Speaker 5: I knew before is anticated. What we saw last year
- 18:42Speaker 5: is sort of leaving the league a little bit Andy
- 18:44Speaker 5: Reid's tree, that West Coast tree. It's changed over time,
- 18:48Speaker 5: but it's a Sean McVeigh driven league. Now what does
- 18:53Speaker 5: that mean for this game? I think it's a little
- 18:55Speaker 5: bit if there's a motivation edge, you know, a score
- 18:59Speaker 5: that for the Jags, And I think it does help
- 19:02Speaker 5: for Liam Cohen to be able to defensively. If they're asking, hey,
- 19:07Speaker 5: why are they doing this, he can tell them necessarily
- 19:12Speaker 5: rams tendencies, but things that that offense does in that situation,
- 19:17Speaker 5: how Sean thinks. Now, Sean's going to know that. So
- 19:21Speaker 5: that's where the chess game begins. So I think it's
- 19:24Speaker 5: a cool game for that reason. You almost wish it
- 19:27Speaker 5: was in the States, So you've been concentrating on that
- 19:29Speaker 5: more because they called it the North Star. I mean,
- 19:32Speaker 5: this is the first measuring stick against the North Star
- 19:35Speaker 5: for the Jaguars.
- 19:36Speaker 1: It feels like, I don't know, if you guys know
- 19:37Speaker 1: the Spider Man meme where they all are pointing at
- 19:39Speaker 1: each other, because it's like I know what you know,
- 19:41Speaker 1: but you know what I know, and I'm excited to
- 19:43Speaker 1: see how it plays out. We'll talk a little bit
- 19:45Speaker 1: more exactly about the Rams matchup on tomorrow's show, but
- 19:48Speaker 1: just some food for thought.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Well, listen, you covered a distinctly different culture than either
- 19:52Speaker 4: one of us have when you were covering the New
- 19:54Speaker 4: England Patriots, and obviously you were with Tony Dungee, so
- 19:57Speaker 4: we all kind of seen different things. This one stands alone,
- 20:01Speaker 4: and if Sean McVay is responsible for the culture that
- 20:04Speaker 4: we're seeing in the building, I mean it feels like
- 20:07Speaker 4: football Heaven.
- 20:08Speaker 3: I mean, these.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Guys are all about the ball and I just like
- 20:12Speaker 4: the way that they do things. And I know they've
- 20:14Speaker 4: got to improve the roster a bit there. There's some
- 20:17Speaker 4: areas they've got to show up. But it just feels
- 20:19Speaker 4: going into this matchup against the North Stars you said,
- 20:21Speaker 4: John like, Liam is really dialed in and really excited
- 20:27Speaker 4: about this.
- 20:27Speaker 7: Absolutely, motivation will be there.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Stay with us on jag Zam after the break, we'll
- 20:31Speaker 1: talk a little bit about what's going on in the
- 20:32Speaker 1: AFC South. Jack Zam brought to you by Field Atta
- 20:41Speaker 1: Groups he Fields First, Jacksonville's premiere luxury auto group. You
- 20:43Speaker 1: can head over to Fields Auto dot com. Welcome back
- 20:48Speaker 1: into jag Zam this morning as we are enjoying our
- 20:52Speaker 1: annual trip to London. We're here at the Grove and
- 20:55Speaker 1: we are going to talk a little bit about what's
- 20:56Speaker 1: been going on in the AFC South. The Texans were off,
- 20:59Speaker 1: so we're skipping them this but the Titans are being
- 21:01Speaker 1: dramatic enough for everybody in the division right now, firing
- 21:04Speaker 1: their head coach Brian Callahan six weeks into this season.
- 21:08Speaker 1: And before we even get into that, I just want
- 21:10Speaker 1: to say when you make changes, obviously Jacksonville's seen a
- 21:13Speaker 1: ton of changes happen before, but when they make it
- 21:15Speaker 1: kind of piecemeal, I feel like that's what makes it difficult.
- 21:18Speaker 7: At times.
- 21:19Speaker 1: In Tennessee, we're seeing just that where you're getting a
- 21:21Speaker 1: new gym, but keeping a coach and then getting rid
- 21:24Speaker 1: of a coach who just drafted a quarterback, and then
- 21:26Speaker 1: you're gonna get a coach in here with a quarterback
- 21:28Speaker 1: that didn't draft. So it's just interesting to watch it
- 21:31Speaker 1: go down in a different way.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Well, so it's Callahan's second season, right, so, and obviously
- 21:35Speaker 4: the Titans said to Burgonzi, Mike Borgnzi, who is the
- 21:38Speaker 4: new general manager, he we'd like to see what he's got.
- 21:41Speaker 4: But Burgunzie came from the Andy Reid Tree, he came
- 21:44Speaker 4: from Kansas City, where he had been for most of
- 21:47Speaker 4: his career, and Brian Callahan came from Zach Taylor, who
- 21:50Speaker 4: came from Sean McVeigh. And sometimes it just it doesn't
- 21:54Speaker 4: match up. Callahan's a guy who said to be terrific
- 21:57Speaker 4: with quarterbacks. So how much progress did you really expect
- 22:00Speaker 4: in the first six weeks with a roster that wasn't
- 22:02Speaker 4: that good? To your point, Kai, they if they were
- 22:05Speaker 4: going to make the move in week six, they should
- 22:08Speaker 4: have just swept it clean at the beginning of the
- 22:09Speaker 4: year and given Bergonzi a chance to bring in a
- 22:11Speaker 4: guy that fits his persona the team that he wants
- 22:15Speaker 4: to build with. Chad Brinker, who vice president of football
- 22:18Speaker 4: operations for them, it just started to clean because we
- 22:21Speaker 4: like Mike McCoy. I mean, I think Mike McCoy is
- 22:23Speaker 4: a good coach. He's worked with good quarterbacks Peyton Manning
- 22:26Speaker 4: and Philip Rivers. But now you're putting him in a
- 22:29Speaker 4: position of having to show a lot of progress, and
- 22:32Speaker 4: you're six weeks in and you kind of know what
- 22:34Speaker 4: y'all are at this point.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it doesn't have to be in lockstep. If
- 22:42Speaker 5: if if the people make it work, if your people,
- 22:47Speaker 5: but if it if it's not, it makes it very
- 22:51Speaker 5: tough to get the timing right, especially with the quarterback
- 22:56Speaker 5: dynamic in the league right now. Meaning now you're five
- 22:59Speaker 5: games in on On not cam Ward, uh, and you're
- 23:03Speaker 5: gonna have an interim coach with cam Ward, and then
- 23:06Speaker 5: next year the storylines up there will be well it's
- 23:10Speaker 5: really his rookie year, you know, and so the time
- 23:13Speaker 5: frame can get away from me. They'll be judging cam
- 23:16Speaker 5: Ward now next year, well is he a second year quarterback?
- 23:20Speaker 5: Is he a first How much progress? So it has
- 23:24Speaker 5: become a timing league where you almost think you got
- 23:26Speaker 5: to hit reset and hope that you that you get
- 23:30Speaker 5: GM and head coach in a year we had the
- 23:32Speaker 5: right quarterback at the top of the draft. So it'll
- 23:34Speaker 5: be interesting to watch because that's sort of we've seen
- 23:38Speaker 5: that with Trevor coming up. When they can get in lockst.
- 23:41Speaker 5: It feels like lockstep now, but it took a while.
- 23:43Speaker 3: You know.
- 23:44Speaker 4: I asked Liam before the Kansas City game about my
- 23:47Speaker 4: homes and and and the standard for you know, having
- 23:51Speaker 4: that knowledge of the system to be able to make
- 23:53Speaker 4: all the change and how long it takes. And he
- 23:55Speaker 4: went right to Trevor and said, you know this, Trevor's
- 23:57Speaker 4: on his third head coach. He's on his third offensive system.
- 23:59Speaker 4: You got to have consistency. So I guess it depends
- 24:02Speaker 4: on how you look at it. Burgonzi may have known
- 24:04Speaker 4: that he was going to blow this thing up and
- 24:05Speaker 4: he didn't want too many systems and too much time
- 24:07Speaker 4: to pass. Or you've created a Trevor Lawrence short of
- 24:11Speaker 4: situation here for them now, and we've seen firsthand how
- 24:14Speaker 4: it's taken him through some ups and downs and still
- 24:18Speaker 4: working to get this offense down. So I think they've
- 24:21Speaker 4: lengthened their their timeline with cam Ward, but that may
- 24:25Speaker 4: not matter because the timeline is so long with a quarterback.
- 24:28Speaker 1: We'll see what it looks like, as this will be
- 24:29Speaker 1: their first week with a different interim coach. Elsewhere, the
- 24:33Speaker 1: Colts are sitting atop the division, and I know we
- 24:36Speaker 1: have talked about this every single week, but they continue
- 24:39Speaker 1: to see success battle back. Got to win over the
- 24:42Speaker 1: Cardinals this week and we don't play them until later
- 24:46Speaker 1: in the season. So a lot of this is just
- 24:47Speaker 1: kind of watching from afar. But John, they're the real deal.
- 24:50Speaker 1: They're getting their wins up there. It's gonna be hard
- 24:52Speaker 1: to get at if they continue on this pace.
- 24:55Speaker 5: I mean, never want to let a team get too
- 24:57Speaker 5: far away there. The positive for the Jags with the
- 25:00Speaker 5: Colts in first place is if you stay within two,
- 25:05Speaker 5: you're gonna have a chance to reel them back in
- 25:06Speaker 5: really fast. So the division should not get away. The
- 25:11Speaker 5: Colts have not played a great schedule. The counter to
- 25:15Speaker 5: that is they are running the ball very well, and
- 25:19Speaker 5: Daniel Jones in his first year there is looking consistent
- 25:23Speaker 5: enough that they're five and one, So you start doing math,
- 25:26Speaker 5: it's hard to see them the way they're playing. With
- 25:30Speaker 5: Daniel Jones giving them consisting at quarterback, you would think
- 25:34Speaker 5: they're at least five hundred down the stretch, which puts
- 25:36Speaker 5: you at eleven and seven or eleven and six whatever.
- 25:42Speaker 5: My math is not great, but somewhere in there. So
- 25:45Speaker 5: it means you've got to win more than that to
- 25:51Speaker 5: catch them. So you don't want to let them get
- 25:54Speaker 5: two or three games up, because then all of a sudden,
- 25:56Speaker 5: every win for you is a holding breath.
- 25:58Speaker 4: I don't think they're a great team, but I think
- 26:00Speaker 4: playing really good football. Shansteichen has a nose for He
- 26:05Speaker 4: came from Philadelphia for the running game, and I mean,
- 26:07Speaker 4: I've been open about my admiration for Jonathan Taylor, who
- 26:11Speaker 4: I think is just sensational, and now that he has
- 26:13Speaker 4: a legitimate quarterback under center, you have got to be
- 26:18Speaker 4: worried about.
- 26:18Speaker 3: What he can do.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Their defense has not been as good, however, they do
- 26:24Speaker 4: have some talented players. DeForest Butner still can play at
- 26:27Speaker 4: a high level. Latou Latou is a young pass rusher
- 26:29Speaker 4: they drafted last year that they like very much. They're
- 26:31Speaker 4: susceptible at corner, where they had a veteran Xavian Howard
- 26:35Speaker 4: retire suddenly on them. But if Jonathan Taylor's controlling the tempo,
- 26:40Speaker 4: the Colts defense can play with the lead, which they
- 26:43Speaker 4: have a lot in the first six weeks, and they've
- 26:45Speaker 4: been good. It's a fun dynamic and I think if
- 26:47Speaker 4: the Jaguars can keep within a couple of games, like
- 26:50Speaker 4: John just mentioned, the AFC Souths can have a little
- 26:52Speaker 4: respect running into the month of December and people aren't
- 26:55Speaker 4: just gonna be able to get buy the worst division
- 26:56Speaker 4: than football. Well, what if you've got an honest to
- 26:58Speaker 4: goodness race between a a Colts team and a Jaguars
- 27:01Speaker 4: team and one of them is gonna end up as
- 27:03Speaker 4: a wildcard if not the division winner, That'll be fun.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Good for us.
- 27:06Speaker 1: It's gonna be fun down the stretch with all the
- 27:08Speaker 1: divisional games the Jaguars have towards back half of the season,
- 27:11Speaker 1: that's for certain.
- 27:12Speaker 7: That's what's up with the AFC South.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Stay with us, we will tell you what's coming up
- 27:15Speaker 1: the rest of the week for the Jaguars here in London,
- 27:28Speaker 1: Jags fan, If you want customized Jaguars furniture for your home,
- 27:31Speaker 1: checkout zipchare dot com to browse all the customizable options.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Zip Chair is furniture for fans. Stepping up our Wednesday,
- 27:38Speaker 1: Jags Am here, we're getting ready to Liam Cohen is
- 27:41Speaker 1: going to have a press availability I believe before practice
- 27:44Speaker 1: today and probably the fanciest press conference area in sports.
- 27:48Speaker 3: It's one of the fun things about coming here. There
- 27:50Speaker 3: is in a.
- 27:50Speaker 4: Greenhouse over by the practice field. It's just it's different.
- 27:55Speaker 4: I mean everything here is walk through.
- 27:57Speaker 7: The gardens on the way to the practice field. It's nice.
- 27:59Speaker 1: We get a little fall out of it. John, This
- 28:02Speaker 1: is like kind of old hat for them at this point.
- 28:04Speaker 1: I know the coaching is new, but just the organizational
- 28:06Speaker 1: how things run over here. Imagine is there a difference
- 28:10Speaker 1: to you with coming early versus coming on a Thursday.
- 28:14Speaker 5: You're here earlier. I mean, it's I've done a lot
- 28:19Speaker 5: of different ways. I do think the players will be
- 28:24Speaker 5: better adjusted, and I think the positive of the camaraderie thing,
- 28:29Speaker 5: I do think is real. I think people think of
- 28:32Speaker 5: teams as always getting to know each other, and really
- 28:39Speaker 5: they don't get that chance outside of training camp, because
- 28:41Speaker 5: you come to the facility, Brian, and you're in your
- 28:43Speaker 5: position groups, and you're in your routine, and every day
- 28:46Speaker 5: is sort of the same from the time training camp
- 28:48Speaker 5: in is the very season. So the fact that they're
- 28:51Speaker 5: here and they see each other in the hallway and
- 28:53Speaker 5: it's like, you know, it's like going to basketball camp
- 28:56Speaker 5: when you're.
- 28:56Speaker 7: A kid, which I used to do.
- 28:57Speaker 5: So there is an element of that that I think
- 28:59Speaker 5: is upon Well, you.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Have that extra time. I mean in the evening when
- 29:02Speaker 4: they're done, they you know, they can go down. I
- 29:04Speaker 4: saw a bunch of guys the other night, you know,
- 29:06Speaker 4: playing cards, right, so they're getting that time together. There
- 29:09Speaker 4: really is something to it, and I do think coming
- 29:11Speaker 4: off the loss, Liam mentioned that in his news conference
- 29:14Speaker 4: on Monday before the team left to come over here
- 29:16Speaker 4: that because of the circumstances of a loss that's stung,
- 29:20Speaker 4: it gives them some time to work through it, and
- 29:22Speaker 4: I think that's a net positive, not a bad.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Time to get back on track. We will be back
- 29:25Speaker 1: here on JAGXAM tomorrow's we look more into the matchup
- 29:28Speaker 1: against the Rams at Wembley on Sunday.
- 29:30Speaker 7: We'll see then
