- 0:00Speaker 1: Back here at Caffe Era with Gene Oreema, Mike Cavanaugh.
- 0:03Speaker 1: CALVS teams in action tomorrow night at Descano six forty
- 0:06Speaker 1: five on the radio against New Hampshire Gino's Cruise of
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Big Eiest Tournament this weekend noon on Saturday eleven
- 0:12Speaker 1: thirty on the network. And we'll just leave it there
- 0:14Speaker 1: because you know, you never take anything for granted, but
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Husky should be at Mohican Sun all weekend. By
- 0:19Speaker 1: the way, this go tee mustache thing I talked about
- 0:22Speaker 1: in the pregame, No, you did on Sunday. We talked
- 0:25Speaker 1: about it in our pregame interview. Is this is this
- 0:28Speaker 1: your playoff Beard? Is this your just mentioned? Is your
- 0:30Speaker 1: game face?
- 0:30Speaker 2: But now you know, when I was a kid, there
- 0:32Speaker 2: was a guy that pitched for the Cleveland Indians. Nobody
- 0:38Speaker 2: in this well, there are probably maybe some people in
- 0:40Speaker 2: this room that might remember this guy to pitch for
- 0:42Speaker 2: the Cleveland Indians. His name was Sam McDowell. It was
- 0:46Speaker 2: a great pitcher and I was what thirteen, fourteen, fifteen,
- 0:52Speaker 2: I don't know. So I've read someplace where he never
- 0:55Speaker 2: shaved like on game days leading up to his next start.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I thought, yeah, he must well, it didn't matter to
- 1:03Speaker 2: me at that age. I didn't shave it before any games,
- 1:05Speaker 2: you know, so it didn't really matter. So maybe I'm
- 1:08Speaker 2: channeling my Sam McDowell putting on my game face here.
- 1:12Speaker 3: There you go.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Did you ever have a beard though?
- 1:14Speaker 2: As I started losing hair on my head? Not like
- 1:17Speaker 2: I'm not like where Mike is.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Because you win.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So you had a lot more hair before that when
- 1:23Speaker 2: he was, when you were an assistant at BC, you
- 1:24Speaker 2: had a lot more hair.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Than I do now. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we want
- 1:29Speaker 3: a lot more there.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll get to that dynamic a little later. That's
- 1:32Speaker 1: a good one to talk about.
- 1:34Speaker 2: You men.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Look at like, look around our penders, Paul Caddy, David Benedict.
- 1:40Speaker 2: But those I know, we have no we have the
- 1:43Speaker 2: only one who wins all the time. And Hurley has
- 1:45Speaker 2: no hair right.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Well, he's just he's a different Caddy.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he's a different guy. He's a different guy. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:53Speaker 2: that thing. He's so ornery a lot of times. Hair
- 1:55Speaker 2: don't want to be on set, whether he wants it
- 1:57Speaker 2: there or not. Hair don't want to be on his set.
- 2:00Speaker 2: He's such a such a high strong guy, you know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: I mean you watch him, and the man it's great
- 2:05Speaker 2: to be young though.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Well, yeah, he's younger than us.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Oh for sure.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I mean, can you imagine me and you being like
- 2:12Speaker 2: that now? At our age? I couldn't do it, no chance, No.
- 2:18Speaker 1: No, I don't.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I don't see that.
- 2:20Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 2:21Speaker 1: You mentioned the five on five dynamic, Gino, Mike and
- 2:25Speaker 1: you both answer this?
- 2:26Speaker 2: You can.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I'm sure you've I mean, obviously you've seen each other's
- 2:29Speaker 1: teams play. But if you have ever seen a practice,
- 2:32Speaker 1: do you guys ever take anything away from the teams
- 2:37Speaker 1: that you like if you watch him in practice? Some
- 2:39Speaker 1: of the drills that Mike does that might fit from
- 2:41Speaker 1: a basketball since and vice versa. Do you guys ever
- 2:45Speaker 1: have you guys ever done that?
- 2:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I've gone and watched Gino's practices. My my dad,
- 2:51Speaker 3: you know, he grew up in Queens and Forest Hills,
- 2:54Speaker 3: and he played football, basketball, and baseball. He never played hockey.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And when we moved I was born in Queens myself,
- 3:02Speaker 3: and then we moved to just north of Boston. When
- 3:05Speaker 3: I was a young kid, there was a pond across
- 3:08Speaker 3: the street, so I just skated because that's what all
- 3:09Speaker 3: the kids did. I didn't play organized hockey till I
- 3:12Speaker 3: was probably ten years old, and my dad used to
- 3:15Speaker 3: tell me all the time, the games are very similar.
- 3:17Speaker 3: It's you know, you're trying to get a two on one.
- 3:20Speaker 3: You're trying to like we set picks in the offensive zone.
- 3:25Speaker 3: You know you're trying to in the fast break. You
- 3:27Speaker 3: want the puck in the middle of the ice, you
- 3:29Speaker 3: want the ball right in the middle of the court,
- 3:31Speaker 3: and you give guys flying on the wings. And it's
- 3:34Speaker 3: a very there's a lot of similarities between the two games.
- 3:39Speaker 3: And to your point, Bob, I know when we're playing
- 3:43Speaker 3: well when you can see five guys, if we're in
- 3:46Speaker 3: the defensive zone, all five guys are in the defensive
- 3:48Speaker 3: zone and we're connected. I call it connected, and we
- 3:51Speaker 3: get through the neutral zone and then the offensive zone,
- 3:53Speaker 3: we're connected. If we're in the offensive zone and we're
- 3:56Speaker 3: trying to four check or like a fast break, I'm
- 3:58Speaker 3: not start fast break press. If you were trying to press.
- 4:02Speaker 3: You can't press with two guys and have three guys
- 4:05Speaker 3: in the back court. Like we can't four check with
- 4:08Speaker 3: three guys and have two guys in the neutral zone.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Like we have to be connected. As a group, and
- 4:13Speaker 3: when we're playing really well, five guys move together throughout
- 4:17Speaker 3: the ice.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And I think if you look at whether it's basketball, hockey, football,
- 4:25Speaker 2: even and someday you can actually you know, in basketball,
- 4:31Speaker 2: you can actually set a screen for somebody right you know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you can stand and a guy runs into you. You know,
- 4:38Speaker 2: in hockey and football, it may be just cut. You know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: I just cut in front of Mic and then Mike
- 4:44Speaker 2: cuts behind me with the puck or without the whatever
- 4:47Speaker 2: the case may be, and right away you've created, like
- 4:51Speaker 2: you know, a path to go forward and get an
- 4:53Speaker 2: advantage somehow somewhere. You see that in football all the time.
- 4:56Speaker 2: You know, they line up three wide receivers on one side.
- 4:58Speaker 2: You know, one guy goes this way, one guy goes
- 5:00Speaker 2: that way, just to kind of get in the way,
- 5:03Speaker 2: you know. So there's a lot of similarities. And I
- 5:06Speaker 2: think if you watch a lot of sports like we do,
- 5:09Speaker 2: you know, you get to see a lot of those
- 5:11Speaker 2: things and you take a lot of that. I always
- 5:15Speaker 2: thought years and years ago, somebody asked me, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 2: my two favorite teams to watch ever were the Knicks,
- 5:24Speaker 2: you know, in seventy one, seventy seventy one, seventy two.
- 5:28Speaker 2: You know, the Bill Bradley, David de Busher, Willis Reed,
- 5:32Speaker 2: Wall Fraser teams. They just Phil Jackson, Phil Jackson. They
- 5:35Speaker 2: just played incredible basketball, you know, just the way they
- 5:38Speaker 2: played together, the way they move without the ball, how
- 5:40Speaker 2: everybody could dribble, everybody could pass, everybody could shoot. And
- 5:45Speaker 2: then my next favorite team you know, to watch was
- 5:48Speaker 2: the Edmonton Oilers because they had like, oh yeah, a
- 5:51Speaker 2: really good player at most positions, pretty much every position.
- 5:55Speaker 2: But then they had like one superstar for the ages
- 5:59Speaker 2: that kind of controlled the whole thing. And it was
- 6:02Speaker 2: like poetry in motion the way they played, you know.
- 6:05Speaker 2: And that's the key is to try to build a
- 6:09Speaker 2: team around a bunch of good players where they don't
- 6:12Speaker 2: all getting each other's way and kind of let let
- 6:16Speaker 2: it kind of you know, and and when we're playing, well,
- 6:20Speaker 2: that's what we look like. And when we're not, it
- 6:23Speaker 2: looks so disjointed, and it looks like, you know, guys
- 6:28Speaker 2: you know, shooting it at the wrong time, the guys
- 6:31Speaker 2: dribbling at the wrong time, the guys you know, cut
- 6:34Speaker 2: the wrong way instead of you know, I want the
- 6:37Speaker 2: guy to cut that way, I throw the ball the
- 6:38Speaker 2: guy goes the other way. You know, when I'm watch
- 6:41Speaker 2: enough hockey and watch enough that there's so much anticipation
- 6:45Speaker 2: in the game because it's moving so fast that you know,
- 6:48Speaker 2: you have to do things quickly, and it's hard to
- 6:50Speaker 2: get five people to think as one. And people say, well, well
- 6:55Speaker 2: you put five all stars out there together. Yeah, well worse,
- 6:58Speaker 2: that's sometimes that's worse. Yeah, because every guy thinks, you know,
- 7:02Speaker 2: they're the guy and that's why. But at the same time,
- 7:06Speaker 2: you know, it's not like this in basketball, like you know,
- 7:10Speaker 2: when they have stuff in basketball, it's not really this.
- 7:14Speaker 2: But when they play, when hockey plays like let's say Canada.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Versus US, that's the only time you see it.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Like men's or women's or like World Cup hockey, the
- 7:25Speaker 2: dream team or you get the USA Men's dream team, right,
- 7:29Speaker 2: the women's the two Olympic teams I coached. You know,
- 7:33Speaker 2: when you have five great players that everybody who touches
- 7:37Speaker 2: the ball can do special things with it, and they're unselfish.
- 7:42Speaker 2: They're just there to win, not to show you know, hey,
- 7:45Speaker 2: I'm the best player on the team. It is the
- 7:48Speaker 2: most incredible thing. I mean basketball, yeah, but I've never
- 7:52Speaker 2: seen anything like I forget maybe it was Four Nations.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Maybe it was the World Cup a few years ago
- 7:59Speaker 2: and it was Annada versus the US, and every guy
- 8:02Speaker 2: that touched the puck was a Hall of Famer and
- 8:06Speaker 2: you just like shake your head, your mouth is open
- 8:08Speaker 2: the whole time watching and and you know he coached
- 8:13Speaker 2: at BC. You probably had teams that were an amateur
- 8:18Speaker 2: version of that. Yeah, what was the best time.
- 8:22Speaker 3: My favorite time of the year was when the Hockey
- 8:26Speaker 3: East Awards were over because it was like, Okay, you
- 8:29Speaker 3: didn't get your award. You did, now let's just go
- 8:32Speaker 3: and you know, and they would you know, because you
- 8:37Speaker 3: started with the US Olympic team. This year you're talking
- 8:40Speaker 3: about you know, Jack Echel, Austin Austin Matthews, who's one
- 8:43Speaker 3: of the best players in the world, taking a back seat,
- 8:47Speaker 3: you know, to kill a penalty or to take a
- 8:50Speaker 3: short shift, which he wouldn't do with the Toronto Maple
- 8:53Speaker 3: Leaves probably, But when it comes down to a gold medal,
- 8:57Speaker 3: you see the superstars sacrifice to win a hockey game. Uh,
- 9:02Speaker 3: that's that, that's when it gets fun.
- 9:03Speaker 1: All Right, we'll take a break. We'll get to calv
- 9:07Speaker 1: because he has a unique perspective maybe on what Gino
- 9:10Speaker 1: has done, because he worked for a guy who's his
- 9:12Speaker 1: legendary in college hockey as this man is in basketball.
- 9:15Speaker 1: We're live at Cafe al Right's the Yukon Women's Basketball
- 9:18Speaker 1: Coaches Show with Gino and Mike Kavanaugh. We're back in
- 9:20Speaker 1: a minute.
