Transcript
- 0:00Hi, everyone. This is Erica Spicer Mason with
- 0:02Becker's Healthcare. Thank you so much for tuning
- 0:04into the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:07So today, we're going to discuss how payers
- 0:09can unlock new growth opportunities by prioritizing
- 0:12compliance in their digital marketing efforts.
- 0:15And joining me for this conversation is David
- 0:18Chai, senior manager of product marketing at Freshpaint.
- 0:21David, welcome to the podcast. Thank you so
- 0:23much for being here today.
- 0:25Thanks for having me, Erica.
- 0:27We're really thrilled to have you here, and
- 0:29I know this topic is top of mind
- 0:32for a lot of payer organizations. So excited
- 0:34to dig in some more. But before we
- 0:36do, I wanted to give you the chance
- 0:37just to share a little bit more about
- 0:39yourself, your role, your organization,
- 0:41whatever feels important for our listeners to know.
- 0:44Yeah. Absolutely. So as, you mentioned, I I
- 0:46lead product marketing at at Fresh Paint. Now
- 0:49exactly what does that mean? It means a
- 0:50lot of things. But I'm focused on really,
- 0:54the go to market strategy and execution, helping,
- 0:56you know, FreshPaint maximize its effort in bringing,
- 1:00privacy compliance to health care at scale.
- 1:03More about FreshPaint, you know, it's a health
- 1:05care privacy platform built specifically for health care
- 1:09marketers,
- 1:09you know, built by privacy and data experts.
- 1:12We make it easy to collect,
- 1:15activate, and optimize data, without any, headaches, from
- 1:19compliance.
- 1:20Unlike others who plan the space, you know,
- 1:23like your typical CDPs,
- 1:24we're 100%
- 1:25focused on health care, serving,
- 1:28payers, providers, pharmacies, and health tech companies.
- 1:32Our our platform is built so marketers can
- 1:34get, up and running quickly without needing an
- 1:37army of engineers or or technical expertise.
- 1:40And we, you know, don't just help you
- 1:42stay HIPAA compliant. We help you grow.
- 1:45With Fresh Paint, health care marketers can unlock
- 1:47full funnel marketing strategies,
- 1:50accurately,
- 1:50measure acquisition costs, and maximize their results.
- 1:54Oh, great. David, it's so great to learn
- 1:56more about Freshpaint, and you hit on a
- 1:58lot of things that I think probably perked
- 2:00up the ears of many of our listeners,
- 2:02including,
- 2:03I think you called it a compliance headache.
- 2:05So we'll get into some of those details
- 2:08around compliance and privacy.
- 2:10But before we do that, I wanted to
- 2:11just kind of start high level and get
- 2:13your take on the key shifts or trends
- 2:16that you're paying really close attention to right
- 2:18now when it comes to digital marketing. And
- 2:20what challenges or opportunity opportunities are you seeing
- 2:23for payers?
- 2:24Yeah. So the first,
- 2:26you know, trend I'm really, paying close attention
- 2:29to is a a bigger focus on outcomes.
- 2:32Health care, you know, marketing budgets are under
- 2:35much more scrutiny,
- 2:36than they ever were before.
- 2:38Most organizations
- 2:39are operating with flat or declining budgets,
- 2:43forcing marketers to really prove, ROI on every
- 2:46dollar that they spend.
- 2:47As a result, you know, marketing strategies are
- 2:50shifting away from,
- 2:52traditional tactics like, you know, using billboards, radio,
- 2:56and even sports sponsorships,
- 2:58towards more digital channels.
- 3:00And and that's really because, you know, they're
- 3:02they offer better tracking, faster insights,
- 3:05and more flexibility
- 3:07to adjust,
- 3:08you know, your campaigns in real time.
- 3:10But this poses a problem, or a challenge,
- 3:14as privacy regulations tighten,
- 3:16and platforms like Google and may Meta enforce
- 3:19stricter privacy policies.
- 3:21Payer marketers are losing access to key targeting
- 3:24and measurement tools that they once relied on.
- 3:27HIPAA compliance adds, yet another layer of complexity,
- 3:31making it even harder to reach the right
- 3:33audience,
- 3:34track campaign performance, and optimize spend effectively.
- 3:38And without a a clear strategy to navigate
- 3:40these changes, you know, marketing teams are forced
- 3:42to make decisions with limited data,
- 3:44leading to less precise audience engagement, higher acquisition
- 3:48costs, and, you know, uncertainty around what's actually
- 3:51driving enrollment.
- 3:53Another trend is, a shift to,
- 3:56privacy first marketing.
- 3:58Privacy, you know, remains a bipartisan issue.
- 4:01And while the regulatory landscape is still evolving,
- 4:05consumer expectations for data protection have never been
- 4:08higher.
- 4:08As I mentioned, even platforms like Google and
- 4:11Meta are tightening restrictions on how health care,
- 4:14marketers can target and track users,
- 4:17you know, making it harder for payer marketers
- 4:19to reach and engage members effectively. But this,
- 4:22you know, presents an opportunity,
- 4:24to use a health care specific privacy platform
- 4:27like Freshpaint,
- 4:28to ensure that, you know, you're staying compliant,
- 4:31adapting to evolving regulations, and really to help
- 4:34you scale your digital marketing confidently,
- 4:37without the risk of compliance issues and brand
- 4:39damage slowing you down.
- 4:41Right.
- 4:42Yeah. That shift to privacy first marketing, that
- 4:45that makes a lot of sense. You know,
- 4:46we're seeing in the mainstream media
- 4:49cyber threats, not only are they growing, but
- 4:52they're being covered much more regularly, and I
- 4:54feel like they're in the public eye,
- 4:56quite a bit more compared to past years.
- 4:58So Yeah. Of course, consumers' expectations
- 5:01for their own data privacy and transparency, that's
- 5:05really growing as well. So kind of in
- 5:07this environment, how can payers position compliance
- 5:11really as a competitive advantage rather than a
- 5:13constraint?
- 5:14Yeah. As you mentioned, you know, consumers are
- 5:17increasingly choosing brands that they trust with their
- 5:19data,
- 5:20especially in health care since health data is
- 5:22so innately personal.
- 5:24By proactively
- 5:25communicating,
- 5:26privacy commitments, you know, payers can really strengthen
- 5:29the relationships with members,
- 5:31differentiate from competitors,
- 5:33who who often treat privacy as an afterthought.
- 5:36This, you know, in turn builds long term
- 5:39loyalty, which pays dividends every a AEP.
- 5:43I mean, I personally pick a payer who's
- 5:45doing the absolute most to protect my health
- 5:47data versus a payer who's,
- 5:49just doing the bare minimum ten ten out
- 5:51of 10 times. Compliance is also not just
- 5:53a a box to check. It's a strategic
- 5:55investment,
- 5:56for the long term.
- 5:58By adopting privacy first marketing now,
- 6:01payers can avoid disruption when regulations tighten,
- 6:04and maintain continuity as the industry evolves.
- 6:07This is super critical for payers since the
- 6:09majority of their business happens during AEP.
- 6:12Imagine a compliance issue arising during the enrollment
- 6:15period and having to pause campaigns and and
- 6:18what that would do to your results.
- 6:20I'd like everyone to remember that, you know,
- 6:22stronger compliance doesn't mean weaker performance.
- 6:25With the right privacy first approach, payers can
- 6:28still reach the right members, optimize campaigns,
- 6:31and measure success without comp compromising sensitive data.
- 6:35Platforms like Fresh Paint,
- 6:37empowers payers to run full funnel privacy compliant
- 6:39marketing from,
- 6:41the top of funnel DSPs to build awareness
- 6:43and brand preference to bottom of funnel,
- 6:46direct response ads on Google and Meta that
- 6:48drive conversions.
- 6:50When it's done right, compliance isn't a limitation.
- 6:53It's a a growth engine.
- 6:55Yeah. That's really fascinating, David. And I know
- 6:58earlier in our conversation, you mentioned how so
- 7:00many payer organizations are really focused on ROI
- 7:03and driving outcomes.
- 7:05So with taking this compliance,
- 7:07you know, forward approach, do you have any,
- 7:09specific examples of maybe KPIs that are really
- 7:12important to organizations that this kind of approach
- 7:15is helping to achieve?
- 7:17Yeah. Absolutely.
- 7:18One of our customers had to stop sharing
- 7:20conversion data with their ad platforms due to
- 7:23HIPAA restrictions.
- 7:24And without this critical information, their cost per
- 7:27lead skyrocketed to $300.
- 7:30And this really put their entire marketing strategy
- 7:32and their ROI,
- 7:34at serious risk.
- 7:35That's when they turned to Freshpaint.
- 7:37And and using our privacy first approach, they
- 7:40were able to securely send,
- 7:42conversion data back to platforms like Google Ads
- 7:44while ensuring that, you know, pace patient privacy,
- 7:47member privacy,
- 7:48remained intact.
- 7:50With Freshpaint, they were able to optimize their
- 7:52campaigns and and reduce their cost per lead
- 7:55by 96%,
- 7:56bringing it down from $300 to just 12.
- 7:59Another example,
- 8:01was one of our customers based a major
- 8:03roadblock,
- 8:04when their compliance team came and shut down
- 8:06all of their analytics tracking due to HIPAA.
- 8:09Without that ability to track journeys or optimize
- 8:12digital campaigns, their their marketing cost increased,
- 8:16and the campaign effectiveness declined.
- 8:18To stay compliant without sacrificing performance, they turned
- 8:21to us,
- 8:22with our healthcare privacy platform, they were able
- 8:25to continue using, you know, the tools that
- 8:27they're used to using Google Analytics, Google Ads,
- 8:29and Meta ads, in a compliant way.
- 8:32As a result, you know, their cost per
- 8:34acquisition dropped by 30%,
- 8:37going from $13 to to just 9.
- 8:40Their Google Ads campaign saw higher conversion rates
- 8:42despite, you know, a reduction in ad spend,
- 8:45and their meta campaigns improved with custom conversions,
- 8:49increasing click through rates and impressions.
- 8:52So, you know, FreshPaper helped them stay compliant,
- 8:55cut costs and improve results, you know. And
- 8:57this really proves that,
- 8:58privacy and performance can go hand in hand.
- 9:02Yeah. Really helpful examples. Thank you so much,
- 9:05David.
- 9:06And I know we're we're coming toward the
- 9:08end of our time together. But before we
- 9:10close, I wanted to just kind of get
- 9:13your your stance on or I I should
- 9:15say your view on what's ahead. So as
- 9:17technology
- 9:18is quickly
- 9:19evolving and advancing and you mentioned
- 9:22standards and regulations like HIPAA,
- 9:24all of these will continue to evolve alongside
- 9:26technology. So
- 9:28what emerging tools or maybe strategies do you
- 9:30think payers should explore now and in the
- 9:33near future to really ensure that their digital
- 9:35marketing strategies are resilient?
- 9:38Yeah.
- 9:39In my opinion, you know, everything starts with
- 9:41a solid privacy foundation.
- 9:43Without that, payer marketers are are really stuck.
- 9:46You know, they're no matter how great a
- 9:48tool or or a strategy sounds, it won't
- 9:50matter, if it doesn't meet compliance standards.
- 9:53But, you know, it's important to remember that
- 9:56not all privacy solutions are created equal. You
- 9:59need to, you know, look for a platform
- 10:01built specifically for health care, you know, one
- 10:03that not only supports your needs today but
- 10:05also scales with you, as the regulations and
- 10:07strategies evolve.
- 10:09Switching costs are high, so the last thing
- 10:11you you want to, do is outgrow your
- 10:13privacy solution and have to start all over
- 10:15again. Once you have that foundation in place,
- 10:17full funnel marketing becomes key.
- 10:20Focusing only on bottom of funnel conversions can
- 10:23work in the short term. But eventually, you
- 10:25know, you're gonna hit a ceiling. There are
- 10:27only so many,
- 10:28people actively shopping for a health plan at
- 10:30any given moment.
- 10:32And to keep growing, you need to educate,
- 10:34consumers early, highlight plan benefits, and stay top
- 10:37of mind. So, when they are ready to
- 10:39enroll, you're you're the first choice in their
- 10:42head.
- 10:43As you navigate, you know, on your privacy
- 10:45journey, there are a few, things I wanna
- 10:47highlight, you know, for you. One is to,
- 10:50avoid the privacy patchwork trap.
- 10:52What this means is, you know, you know,
- 10:54a lot of payer marketers today,
- 10:57layer different,
- 10:58different tools together to meet privacy requirements,
- 11:01but a fragmented approach creates inefficiencies
- 11:04and and, you know, risk compliance gaps.
- 11:07A single health care specific privacy solution eliminates
- 11:10the need for,
- 11:11workarounds,
- 11:12and assures your data remains protected across all
- 11:15your marketing channels.
- 11:17The next thing is, you know, scale scalability
- 11:19really matters.
- 11:20You need to, you know, think beyond AEP.
- 11:23Many payers focus on short term privacy fixes
- 11:26to get through AEP, but,
- 11:28compliance is just, isn't just an enrollment season
- 11:31concern. It impacts your year round marketing strategies.
- 11:34A future proof privacy foundation allows you to
- 11:36scale your,
- 11:38marketing efforts smoothly,
- 11:40rather than having to to scramble and adjust
- 11:42to new regulations every year.
- 11:44And the last thing, you know, I'll leave
- 11:46you with is, you know, the cost of
- 11:48waiting is very high. You know, waiting to
- 11:49fix privacy gaps until they become a problem
- 11:52can lead to campaign disruptions, lost audience insights,
- 11:56and and wasted ad spend, you know, things
- 11:58that are nightmares for marketers.
- 12:00The smartest peer marketers are proactive, not reactive,
- 12:03so investing in a compliant, scalable privacy solution
- 12:06now
- 12:07ensures you're prepared for the future, and not
- 12:10just today.
- 12:11Yeah. Really appreciate the sound advice, David, and
- 12:15having you outline all of those steps so
- 12:17clearly, I think, is going to help our
- 12:18listeners so much.
- 12:20Before we end our time, is there anything
- 12:23else that we missed or anything else that
- 12:25you wanted to highlight for listeners?
- 12:27Yeah. You know, we we have a team
- 12:29of, experts around privacy compliance, you know, within
- 12:33health care. So definitely, if there's additional questions,
