- 0:00Speaker 1: Training camp cover John Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five
- 0:02Speaker 1: powered by Ramos Law Car Accident You need Ramos Law,
- 0:05Speaker 1: Medical doctor and attorney Ramoslaw dot com. Jeff Legwald of
- 0:09Speaker 1: ESPN covering practice today. Uh, Jeff, some interesting revelations from
- 0:14Speaker 1: practice today. But more than anything, the soft tissue injuries
- 0:19Speaker 1: continue to not just be a story, but maybe the
- 0:23Speaker 1: story of this training camp.
- 0:24Speaker 2: JK. Dobbins, Uh leaving the field today.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Uh.
- 0:28Speaker 1: What is Sean Payton and what are the Broncos trying
- 0:31Speaker 1: to do to uh stem this soft tissue injury tide?
- 0:36Speaker 3: Well, I mean, uh, in some ways, you know, maybe
- 0:39Speaker 3: they tempted the universe. Uh, and at all after the
- 0:43Speaker 3: last two years, they Sean especially has been very vocal
- 0:47Speaker 3: about you know, how they he know, you know, and
- 0:49Speaker 3: you you would expect a guy to stick up for
- 0:54Speaker 3: his staff, certainly, but they He's spent very vocal the
- 0:57Speaker 3: last couple of years that they he thought that you know,
- 1:00Speaker 3: they had found a nice rhythm and a calendar and
- 1:03Speaker 3: a schedule of doing things that enabled them to avoid
- 1:09Speaker 3: a lot of injuries that other people had. And uh,
- 1:13Speaker 3: you know, this year a little bit feels like the
- 1:15Speaker 3: pendulum has swung back certainly. You know, they've had including
- 1:20Speaker 3: players they've already released. You know, they've had five or
- 1:23Speaker 3: six already, including you know, Jalen Wattle, Marvin Mims, and
- 1:27Speaker 3: now today JK. Dobbins, uh with what he characterized is
- 1:32Speaker 3: handstring growing and other strains. So, h you know, today
- 1:40Speaker 3: he added a little more of a formal cool down
- 1:46Speaker 3: work at the end of practice. And it was one
- 1:48Speaker 3: of the longest practices of training camp today, so you
- 1:52Speaker 3: had that as well. But he said they're going to
- 1:55Speaker 3: keep this cool down you know, and in effect, you know,
- 2:02Speaker 3: for certainly while they're doing this part of training camp.
- 2:06Speaker 3: And I think he you know, he also he studied
- 2:10Speaker 3: kind of what are is there a common theme to
- 2:13Speaker 3: the time of practice, what what kind of practice period
- 2:18Speaker 3: are they in right before these injuries are happening, So
- 2:21Speaker 3: they are looking at it all and I you know,
- 2:23Speaker 3: he gets frustrated when these kinds of things sort of
- 2:28Speaker 3: you know, not the train off the tracks a little
- 2:30Speaker 3: bit so, but today overall had the feel of Okay,
- 2:36Speaker 3: the principle was gone for a couple of days, well,
- 2:39Speaker 3: today's back, and you know, it was a very long practice.
- 2:43Speaker 3: They had moments in practice where they were really working
- 2:48Speaker 3: through some of the you know, commentary with the players
- 2:52Speaker 3: and coaches and all of it. You could tell he
- 2:54Speaker 3: was very active today and that I think he wanted
- 2:58Speaker 3: to reassure everyone that he is indeed back on the
- 3:02Speaker 3: practice field.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yes, he certainly reasserted himself, I would say, out there today.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And then he also did talk about the plan for
- 3:09Speaker 1: Friday night in the preseason game, and Leggy, even with
- 3:13Speaker 1: this spate of injuries that they're dealing with, he wants
- 3:17Speaker 1: his guys out there and if you're a starter and
- 3:19Speaker 1: you're healthy, you will probably get at least a few
- 3:22Speaker 1: snaps on Friday Night.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I've expected that all along. Nate. That's his nature,
- 3:29Speaker 3: It's in his DNA, how he was raised. As a coach,
- 3:33Speaker 3: he firmly believes if you're gonna play football in the
- 3:36Speaker 3: regular season, you at least have to play a little bit,
- 3:40Speaker 3: you know, if you're a starter in the preseason. Now,
- 3:44Speaker 3: he's not endorsing guys, you know, playing whole games or
- 3:47Speaker 3: even whole halves, but if you're a starter on the Broncos,
- 3:52Speaker 3: he is not gonna let you believe that you are
- 3:55Speaker 3: going to get baseball caps and T shirts for preseason games,
- 4:00Speaker 3: you are you're gonna play some snaps, and even in
- 4:03Speaker 3: the third preseason game, if you're a veteran player, a starter,
- 4:08Speaker 3: and you don't play in the game, you are still
- 4:11Speaker 3: gonna put all your gear on and warm up like
- 4:14Speaker 3: you're gonna play, and then maybe at halftime you get
- 4:17Speaker 3: to take the shoulder pads off and and enjoy the
- 4:21Speaker 3: rest of the game even though you didn't play at all.
- 4:24Speaker 4: How do you think this preseason is gonna look play
- 4:26Speaker 4: calling wise, Jeff?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Are they gonna let him?
- 4:28Speaker 4: Are they gonna let you know, Davis web experiment a
- 4:31Speaker 4: little bit? I mean, I know what you want to
- 4:33Speaker 4: keep it vanilla. You don't want to put too much
- 4:35Speaker 4: on tape for the first game of the season and
- 4:37Speaker 4: all that stuff, because you want to have that element surprise.
- 4:39Speaker 4: But how much do you think they let him kind
- 4:42Speaker 4: of mess around with this? Please preseason play calling? Will
- 4:45Speaker 4: it be much at all? Or will it be like
- 4:47Speaker 4: years past?
- 4:49Speaker 3: And I think the guardrails will be off it just
- 4:51Speaker 3: simply because again this is a Sean Payton thing and
- 4:54Speaker 3: actually a George Peyton thing too. They want to make
- 4:59Speaker 3: evaluate decisions, so Sewan has talked in the past. I
- 5:03Speaker 3: think even today he talked about it a little bit.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Is you don't want to stray from the things the
- 5:09Speaker 3: players can handle, because especially the young guys, because they
- 5:14Speaker 3: want a real evaluation on them as players. So give
- 5:18Speaker 3: them things they're comfortable with so you can see them
- 5:21Speaker 3: at their best and then you make a decision about
- 5:25Speaker 3: practice squad, roster whatever. So I think the evaluation component
- 5:31Speaker 3: will keep things, you know, simple and regular because they
- 5:36Speaker 3: want to see the young guys, especially especially this year.
- 5:42Speaker 3: I mean, they don't have a lot of roster spots
- 5:44Speaker 3: to squeeze in the young prospects you know, all over
- 5:48Speaker 3: the place, so their practice squad, those are going to
- 5:51Speaker 3: be really important decisions and they don't want to goof
- 5:55Speaker 3: those up. So I think to your question, I think
- 5:58Speaker 3: it will. It won't be like simple and regular because
- 6:02Speaker 3: they don't think Davis web is ready for that, or
- 6:05Speaker 3: you know, don't want to let him stretch his legs
- 6:08Speaker 3: a little bit. It's more that when they get in
- 6:12Speaker 3: the back end of the second quarter and into the
- 6:16Speaker 3: third and fourth quarters of the preseason games, they want
- 6:19Speaker 3: a real look at those players, so they're going to
- 6:22Speaker 3: give them the you know, the parts of the play
- 6:26Speaker 3: sheets on both sides of the ball that they're most
- 6:28Speaker 3: comfortable with.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And it sounds like Davis Webb is going to be
- 6:32Speaker 1: trying to get everybody comfortable from the sidelines. That whatever
- 6:37Speaker 1: question there was, leg he had always made most sense
- 6:40Speaker 1: that Davis Webb would be on the sidelines. But it
- 6:42Speaker 1: sounds like he wants it. John Payton wants it, Bo
- 6:45Speaker 1: Nicks wants it. That's going to be the plan.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and I you know, usually an ex player wants
- 6:52Speaker 3: to be on the sideline who becomes a coordinator on
- 6:55Speaker 3: either side of the ball. You know, it was funny.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Mis Fangio is one of the few really veteran coaches
- 7:02Speaker 3: I've heard say out loud he prefers up in the box,
- 7:07Speaker 3: you know, because of the view and the perspective you
- 7:10Speaker 3: can get from up there, even though they don't think
- 7:13Speaker 3: it works for us, but they like the perspective from
- 7:17Speaker 3: the box sometimes. But Vic's really the only guy publicly
- 7:22Speaker 3: that you know, has been so adamant even as a
- 7:25Speaker 3: head coach. He was trying to think away where he
- 7:27Speaker 3: could be up there. But yeah, that Davis Webb wants
- 7:32Speaker 3: to be on the sidelines, Bo wants him down there,
- 7:35Speaker 3: And to me, that's all the votes you need. And
- 7:38Speaker 3: I think since that's the way Sean came up too.
- 7:40Speaker 3: As a play caller, you know, he likes being on
- 7:43Speaker 3: this and as a head coach play caller, that's been
- 7:47Speaker 3: his view for you know, sixteen seventeen years now, so
- 7:52Speaker 3: he he really likes the view from there. So it
- 7:56Speaker 3: was gonna shock me if Davis Webb was in the
- 8:00Speaker 3: oats box. So it does sort of actually make that
- 8:04Speaker 3: public what was kind of bubbling behind the scenes.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Anyway, all right, I probably should have followed up after
- 8:09Speaker 4: we were talking about the injuries, but I was curious
- 8:11Speaker 4: about the play Caunk, so asking out. I know you
- 8:14Speaker 4: told Nate that you know they are looking to do it,
- 8:15Speaker 4: they're frustrated the a's element of dad coming home and
- 8:18Speaker 4: all that, But is there any injury that we're really
- 8:20Speaker 4: concerned about to this point or is this all just
- 8:22Speaker 4: sort of nagging stuff of camp.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Well, Andy, you and I have talked over the years
- 8:28Speaker 3: here the Lotto one. You could have predicted a guy
- 8:32Speaker 3: who played it essentially sea level and practiced at sea
- 8:36Speaker 3: level comes up to altitude and players through the years
- 8:41Speaker 3: I've seen in a million times. It affects how you
- 8:45Speaker 3: have to hydrate living up here. We know it living here,
- 8:50Speaker 3: but on the elite athlete level, it really becomes an
- 8:55Speaker 3: issue you have to address in a different way. You
- 8:58Speaker 3: can't simply maybe like drink the same amount of water
- 9:03Speaker 3: and sports drink or whatever as you have in the past.
- 9:07Speaker 3: You've got to You've got to do more, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: living here. It's just a fact. And so that one
- 9:16Speaker 3: didn't surprise me at all because that I've seen it
- 9:19Speaker 3: happen in every camp I've covered for the Broncos. It's
- 9:24Speaker 3: it's happened so and I don't know that that was
- 9:27Speaker 3: the because of Jalen Wattell specifically, but I do know
- 9:32Speaker 3: every time they have one of these injuries, Sean Payton
- 9:35Speaker 3: mentions hydration. So it's on his mind. And today, if
- 9:40Speaker 3: you listen closely, he has a moment where he says
- 9:44Speaker 3: it's incumbent on the player, and then he stops himself
- 9:48Speaker 3: and he moves on to the to the next thought.
- 9:52Speaker 3: So I think in his mind there's at least an
- 9:54Speaker 3: element of the team and the players have to do
- 9:58Speaker 3: better right now to make sure they're hydrating, they're you know,
- 10:03Speaker 3: eating the way they want them to eat, you know,
- 10:05Speaker 3: getting there all the stuff you talk about. I think
- 10:08Speaker 3: he's re emphasizing that to them and the concern level.
- 10:12Speaker 3: You know, Nim's was back today a little bit. Wattle
- 10:16Speaker 3: certainly is moving much better than he was even just
- 10:20Speaker 3: a few days ago when he he had a very
- 10:22Speaker 3: noticeable limp, and today he was He didn't practice, but
- 10:26Speaker 3: he was catching passes from the quarterbacks early and in
- 10:30Speaker 3: practice before they they got things going. Uh. And he
- 10:34Speaker 3: had the gloves on like he was gonna practice even
- 10:37Speaker 3: though he wasn't gonna. So I think he's progressing. The
- 10:40Speaker 3: Dobbins run, I don't think we know much yet. Uh.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I don't think he was happy running off the field.
- 10:46Speaker 3: And he did run off the field right next to me,
- 10:49Speaker 3: so uh he was moving at least a little bit. Uh,
- 10:55Speaker 3: you know, not badly, but uh, he did not look
- 10:58Speaker 3: very happy when he when he went into the locker room.
- 11:01Speaker 1: That's our buddy, Jeff Legwold with all the latest on
- 11:03Speaker 1: the soft tissue injuries for the Broncos. Jeff Legwald brought
- 11:06Speaker 1: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW
- 11:09Speaker 1: Local sixty eight. Start with a job and with a career, Jeff,
- 11:14Speaker 1: your colleague Kevin Seffert of ESPN reporting today that the
- 11:19Speaker 1: NFL will allow head coaches to designate a member of
- 11:23Speaker 1: their sideline staff to initiate replay challenges, according to a
- 11:29Speaker 1: league official, as we know, head coaches previously had only
- 11:33Speaker 1: been the holders of the red flag and throwing it.
- 11:38Speaker 1: This was not announced at the annual meeting, but apparently
- 11:41Speaker 1: the head coach or the head coach's pregame challenge designee
- 11:45Speaker 1: can initiate a challenge by throwing a red flag onto
- 11:48Speaker 1: the field, which naturally leads to the question, Jeff Sehn
- 11:51Speaker 1: Payton already gave up play calling duties, is there a
- 11:54Speaker 1: world where he gives up red flag duties as well?
- 11:57Speaker 3: Now he has more time concentrate on red flag.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I was gonna say, I don't know if that's a
- 12:04Speaker 2: good thing.
- 12:04Speaker 4: I was about to say, he doesn't have that high
- 12:07Speaker 4: success rate.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Well, it's hard for me to believe though, that any
- 12:12Speaker 3: challenge would not have gone through his headset before anybody
- 12:15Speaker 3: else to throw the flag. So, but uh, I can
- 12:20Speaker 3: see why. I mean, you know, some coaches have play callers,
- 12:24Speaker 3: and you know, are the play callers on either side
- 12:27Speaker 3: of the ball, and you know, you can get wrapped
- 12:29Speaker 3: up and all that. So I think in a game situation,
- 12:33Speaker 3: but usually there's already somebody designated, you know, either in
- 12:38Speaker 3: the coach's box or on the sideline, you may want
- 12:42Speaker 3: to take a look at that, you know, type of
- 12:44Speaker 3: thing to get us attention. So I think it just
- 12:48Speaker 3: formalizes that a little bit uh and gives the head coach.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I think the coaches have said, just give us the
- 12:54Speaker 3: option too. You know, one person still gets to throw
- 12:58Speaker 3: the flag, but just give us the option to figure
- 13:00Speaker 3: that out in the in the way we want to.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 1: See, I I gotta be honest with you, guys, I
- 13:05Speaker 1: hate this rule change. Like like Kevin Seffert wrote it
- 13:09Speaker 1: right in his piece, some coaches have acknowledged challenging calls
- 13:12Speaker 1: for emotional rather than strategic reasons, and a designated staff
- 13:16Speaker 1: member could provide a fire wall for such decisions.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Why do we want a firewall? I do want some coach.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Flying off the handle and fire in a red flag
- 13:25Speaker 1: just because he's pissed off at a ref like that,
- 13:27Speaker 1: to me is yet another game day challenge. Coaches are
- 13:31Speaker 1: always talking about keep your emotions in check. Well, this
- 13:34Speaker 1: is this is the test on them of whether or
- 13:36Speaker 1: not they can.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Actually, this is.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Like hockey too, right, where Hockey's got the person. You know,
- 13:41Speaker 4: they're always praising the AVS guy on the broadcast if
- 13:44Speaker 4: he's always perfect when telling the coach when the challenge right, like.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Like, you still don't want that guy, but I don't
- 13:49Speaker 1: want to stare a lot. I want I want to
- 13:51Speaker 1: fiery football coach, and especially like when they get really
- 13:54Speaker 1: mad and then they throw the red flag halfway out
- 13:56Speaker 1: onto the field.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good.
- 13:58Speaker 4: I don't want to do away with Do you like
- 14:00Speaker 4: the Billichick angry just the just the drop.
- 14:03Speaker 1: See, it's just, Jeff, It's just it's just another example
- 14:07Speaker 1: of them trying to do everything they can to sanitize
- 14:10Speaker 1: pro football.
- 14:12Speaker 3: I do like the I'm so off better. Yeah, that
- 14:17Speaker 3: one's just like the ultimate I'm so done with all
- 14:21Speaker 3: of you. I'm just gonna drop this red flag right here.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I'm gonna throw it right at the rest of the shit.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, but I do.
- 14:27Speaker 4: You're right though, you get the good one like Harball
- 14:30Speaker 4: back in the old.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Oh yeah, looking to throw that thing.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Yeah all right, Jeff, the concrete company caved and now
- 14:38Speaker 4: they've got the concrete company property. What's left before they
- 14:41Speaker 4: secure the whole desired site. Is it just the water
- 14:44Speaker 4: building or what's left to this?
- 14:47Speaker 3: Oh, it's yeah, there's there's Denver water. Uh, you know
- 14:52Speaker 3: how they're gonna divvy up that relocation and then just
- 14:55Speaker 3: the whole community document. None of that is done, so
- 15:00Speaker 3: that there's still a lot of that to do. You
- 15:03Speaker 3: know what the neighborhood benefit document. They haven't even agreed
- 15:08Speaker 3: with the you know, the neighborhood groups as to what
- 15:11Speaker 3: would be on that you know document right now. So
- 15:16Speaker 3: still a ways to go. I mean the actual footprint
- 15:19Speaker 3: of the side, that's it's a they've got most of
- 15:21Speaker 3: it now so uh and they had the stadium itself
- 15:26Speaker 3: footprint before was ready. This is just more of the
- 15:31Speaker 3: sort of the campus big project, big picture project.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Mixed use entertainment district right now.
- 15:39Speaker 3: But all of the all of the community stuff is
- 15:43Speaker 3: still ongoing and and I you know, you won't until
- 15:48Speaker 3: all of that stuff goes to the city council for
- 15:52Speaker 3: approvals that there won't be any shovels in the ground.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Yeah, we can't have pro sports without mixed use entertainment.
- 15:59Speaker 1: That's Jeff Legwald of ESPN. Everybody, we'll take a quick
- 16:02Speaker 1: break when we come back. Let's talk a little bit
- 16:05Speaker 1: about this Broncos defense, who is standing out so far
- 16:09Speaker 1: in this camp and what we're looking for coming up
- 16:12Speaker 1: on Friday night against the Falcons. Jeff Legwald of ESPN
- 16:15Speaker 1: with the Creikman and Lindahl Show breaking down training camp
- 16:18Speaker 1: as our coverage is brought to you by Ramos Law
- 16:20Speaker 1: car Accident. You need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney
- 16:23Speaker 1: ramos Law dot com. All right, let's get back into
- 16:25Speaker 1: it with Jeff Legwald right now. Brought to you by
- 16:27Speaker 1: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Start with a job and with a career. Jeff, let's
- 16:34Speaker 1: talk about this Broncos defense. We had a good conversation
- 16:36Speaker 1: with Malcolm Roach earlier today. Have you been able to
- 16:41Speaker 1: identify an area where this Broncos defense might be even better?
- 16:46Speaker 1: If that's possible, then they were last season.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Well, if they add the turnovers and knockdown passes they've
- 16:56Speaker 3: had in camp so far to the mix. Uh, you know,
- 17:00Speaker 3: that's really the only frontier they have. Uh. You know,
- 17:05Speaker 3: when you look at last year's metrics, whatever whatever lens
- 17:09Speaker 3: you want to look at last year's defense through even
- 17:13Speaker 3: then you know, with some bobbles down the stretch, the
- 17:17Speaker 3: overall picture was, you know, one of the best in
- 17:20Speaker 3: the league, top three or four in the the advanced
- 17:25Speaker 3: metrics people care about and the regular metrics we we
- 17:30Speaker 3: care about. But the turnovers were lacking. And if if
- 17:33Speaker 3: they find those, then uh, they've really they've really added something.
- 17:40Speaker 3: What has stuck out to me every day at practice
- 17:43Speaker 3: is a how much they've absolutely destroyed run periods. And
- 17:49Speaker 3: in some ways you expect in camp it's you know,
- 17:52Speaker 3: the the old lineman can't put anybody on the ground
- 17:55Speaker 3: in camp. I mean it's all built against you know,
- 18:00Speaker 3: it's like one on one kings are really built against
- 18:04Speaker 3: the old lignement in a lot of ways because so
- 18:08Speaker 3: much of that job is collaborative. But uh, you know,
- 18:12Speaker 3: I think the run periods are stuck out. And just
- 18:15Speaker 3: how much team speed they have all the way through
- 18:18Speaker 3: the depth chart, they have more team speed and the
- 18:22Speaker 3: twos and the threes than some people have, you know,
- 18:26Speaker 3: across their top you know, fifteen sixteen players on defense,
- 18:32Speaker 3: and when I look at it from an evaluation, Leeds,
- 18:36Speaker 3: that's that's really you know, something they've tried to do.
- 18:41Speaker 3: You can't assemble this much team speed if it's not
- 18:44Speaker 3: on your agenda?
- 18:46Speaker 4: Jeff, what what one? Is there been a defensive player
- 18:52Speaker 4: that surprised you in camp so far?
- 18:54Speaker 2: How about that we're about a week?
- 18:56Speaker 4: What are we?
- 18:56Speaker 3: Man?
- 18:56Speaker 4: We're more of the week.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Now what ten.
- 18:58Speaker 4: Days in you've had a really good it? Is there
- 19:00Speaker 4: a guy there that surprised you? Now I know you've
- 19:04Speaker 4: talked to need him?
- 19:05Speaker 2: Is he? Is he still?
- 19:06Speaker 4: I guess the biggest surprise or is there somebody else lurking?
- 19:10Speaker 3: Well? I mean it's hard. Surprise isn't where I'd go.
- 19:15Speaker 3: I go with guys who are having camps that would
- 19:19Speaker 3: have been good enough to make it, and you're okay,
- 19:23Speaker 3: then they're gonna have a hard time this year, you know.
- 19:26Speaker 3: And they're they're having great camps. But you know, the
- 19:30Speaker 3: the young rookie safety, you know, Miles Scott, I'm not
- 19:33Speaker 3: sure there's uh, you know, there is roommate for that
- 19:37Speaker 3: fourth safety, but it's competitive. You know that Tyson Anderson
- 19:42Speaker 3: was one of the few guys they signed in free agency,
- 19:45Speaker 3: the only guy for a while from somewhere else. Now
- 19:48Speaker 3: he's special teams mostly, but you can't just be a
- 19:53Speaker 3: special teamer, you know, in safety. So I think Miles
- 19:57Speaker 3: Scott's had a good camp quietly, you know Coleman obviously,
- 20:03Speaker 3: but you know he's making it. It will take a
- 20:07Speaker 3: you know, some kind of crazy circumstance that that Jonah
- 20:11Speaker 3: Coleman doesn't make the roster. I think Drew Sanders has
- 20:15Speaker 3: looked good, but you know, where where does he fit?
- 20:19Speaker 3: You know, he's worked at edge most of the time.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Are they going to keep more than four there? You
- 20:24Speaker 3: know that there's just all these guys that are having
- 20:27Speaker 3: good enough camps that there's there's sort of not room
- 20:31Speaker 3: for along the way.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's just there's a major lack of jobs
- 20:37Speaker 1: available with this team. It just goes to show you
- 20:39Speaker 1: how good that they are. And yet, Jeff, is there
- 20:43Speaker 1: is there a guy or two on the defensive side
- 20:45Speaker 1: of the ball that you think like the preseason games,
- 20:48Speaker 1: and I guess I'll even say offensive side of the
- 20:50Speaker 1: ball as well, I think, you know, a tight end job.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I think there's a position battle for like the fourth
- 20:54Speaker 1: tight end right now. But is there a guy or
- 20:57Speaker 1: two that you think is you know, a couple of
- 21:00Speaker 1: good showings in the preseason away from solidifying their spot
- 21:03Speaker 1: on the fifty three.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Yeah, probably an inside linebacker. Yeah, you know, I think
- 21:07Speaker 3: I think Red Murdock, I think.
- 21:08Speaker 2: He's Yeah, would have been my first. Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker 3: If he has moments in the games like he's had
- 21:16Speaker 3: in practice, you know that the thing is in in
- 21:19Speaker 3: Djay's defense. Uh, you know, that guy's making the calls
- 21:24Speaker 3: that position. And for him to be a rookie and
- 21:29Speaker 3: to pretty seamlessly making calls and practice is is really telling.
- 21:35Speaker 3: And then you add in that he is starting to show,
- 21:39Speaker 3: uh you know what else he does. You know, he's
- 21:42Speaker 3: not overthinking and playing slow. He's making all the calls,
- 21:47Speaker 3: moving to the ball, playing with anticipation. And the other
- 21:50Speaker 3: day he knocked the ball out, which is his absolute,
- 21:54Speaker 3: uh trademark. You know, I've I've done the draft a
- 21:57Speaker 3: little while, and I'm I've seen very few guys have
- 22:01Speaker 3: that kind of knack for getting the ball on the ground,
- 22:05Speaker 3: you know, and all that time. And if you even
- 22:07Speaker 3: have an inkling of that at the NFL level, people
- 22:11Speaker 3: are gonna want you around. And I you know, the
- 22:15Speaker 3: other guy, he's gonna get playing time. But Hugh Robinson
- 22:18Speaker 3: looks like a different player from last year. He last
- 22:22Speaker 3: year he had flashes and like today, in the one
- 22:25Speaker 3: on ones, just really showed a lot of quick I mean,
- 22:30Speaker 3: that's if you're a good drafting team. Hugh Robinson is
- 22:34Speaker 3: the kind of player you find. He selects snaps at
- 22:38Speaker 3: a big time program, you know, coached well in college,
- 22:44Speaker 3: comes to you with all kinds of traits that you
- 22:47Speaker 3: like in a player. He just didn't play much, but
- 22:50Speaker 3: you see, you know the potential what he could be.
- 22:55Speaker 3: And he has made that proverbial jump between rookie and
- 23:00Speaker 3: and second year and case casey. I don't know if
- 23:03Speaker 3: there's room for him on the roster. I don't know
- 23:05Speaker 3: if he'd make it through waivers, but that guy might
- 23:08Speaker 3: be a four position player before he's done playing NFL football.
- 23:14Speaker 3: And he's really stood out as a young lineman. He
- 23:18Speaker 3: looks a lot more refined than just a rookie rookie lineman.
- 23:25Speaker 4: All Right, Jeff, I gotta ask if Jonah Coleman he
- 23:29Speaker 4: keeps getting talked about.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Now, I'm not going to tell you.
- 23:32Speaker 4: I was telling me. You know what's been weird about
- 23:33Speaker 4: this camp that we've not dealt with in the last
- 23:35Speaker 4: few years is I feel like I'm actually walking you know,
- 23:37Speaker 4: you just talked about it. There they haven't had a
- 23:39Speaker 4: lot of injuries, and I feel like I'm spending as
- 23:41Speaker 4: much time trying to figure out does a guy feel okay?
- 23:43Speaker 4: Is that something to worry about? And maybe I'm missing
- 23:46Speaker 4: the reps it as Jonah Coleman pop. I guess I
- 23:48Speaker 4: haven't really completely noticed, but a number of people are
- 23:51Speaker 4: talking about him. What have you liked about the young
- 23:54Speaker 4: rookie that you think puts him on track to be
- 23:55Speaker 4: a contributor to the team.
- 23:58Speaker 3: But you're not gonna notice, you know, per se a
- 24:01Speaker 3: runner like that, and because he's physical, his game is physicality.
- 24:06Speaker 3: But when whenever I looked at runners in a situation
- 24:11Speaker 3: where you're not tackling to the ground and you know,
- 24:14Speaker 3: second effort tackles or breaking tackles are not going to
- 24:18Speaker 3: be part of the equation and they're not in practice anymore.
- 24:21Speaker 3: You can't practice that way anymore. Guys are too big,
- 24:24Speaker 3: too strong, too fast. You can't go Monday through Friday,
- 24:28Speaker 3: you know, like they used to. But his decisiveness is
- 24:32Speaker 3: what you're looking at when he sees the you know,
- 24:35Speaker 3: I always liken it to the the the doors at
- 24:40Speaker 3: the grocery store, they're only going to stay open, you know,
- 24:43Speaker 3: and then they're going to close. That's that's what the
- 24:45Speaker 3: run game is in the NFL, and it's a lot
- 24:48Speaker 3: quicker than college college. You get a little more time
- 24:53Speaker 3: to decide what do I want to do? You know,
- 24:55Speaker 3: where do I want to cut it up?
- 24:58Speaker 2: Uh?
- 24:58Speaker 3: You just have more time and with with In the NFL,
- 25:02Speaker 3: defenders are all fast for their size. The three hundred
- 25:06Speaker 3: pounders are fast, the inside linebackers are fast, and the
- 25:10Speaker 3: dbs are really really fast. So your decisiveness determines how
- 25:16Speaker 3: well it's going to go. And I think that's where R. J.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Harvey has gotten when when he doesn't get all there
- 25:24Speaker 3: is blocked on a run, it's because of that. Uh.
- 25:27Speaker 3: You know he's just a tick late uh to the party,
- 25:31Speaker 3: as it were, whereas Coleman is right into the correct track.
- 25:36Speaker 3: You know, most run plays, especially in the zone run game. UH. Coaches,
- 25:41Speaker 3: you know, Mike Shanahan, Kubiak, Mike Heimerdinger have always told
- 25:45Speaker 3: me a zone run game, especially at its best, you're
- 25:49Speaker 3: going to have uh. The their optimum is that you
- 25:52Speaker 3: have three choices as a runner. You know, when when
- 25:56Speaker 3: it's time to cut it up the field, if they've
- 25:58Speaker 3: done it right, So making the best of those the
- 26:03Speaker 3: most quickly. Uh, that's when you're really gonna get everything
- 26:07Speaker 3: there is blocked in the run. And last year, that's
- 26:11Speaker 3: what the metrics showed for the Broncos. They they scored
- 26:15Speaker 3: very well in advanced metrics and how they blocked the
- 26:19Speaker 3: run game, but they didn't get the expected yards out
- 26:24Speaker 3: of those plays. And that tells you there's a disconnect
- 26:27Speaker 3: between how it's getting blocked in the backs, especially after Dobbins, Yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 3: was out of the lineup.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I think Dobbins was a full yard over expectation, but
- 26:37Speaker 1: everybody else was like, well below.
- 26:39Speaker 3: And that's that's you know, a lot of advanced metrics
- 26:42Speaker 3: you can kind of pick away at. Yeah, I don't
- 26:44Speaker 3: know what about this. That's a actual that's a really
- 26:47Speaker 3: good one. And Coleman addresses that. That tells you the
- 26:53Speaker 3: team felt that way too, because his you know, he
- 26:57Speaker 3: isn't gonna run away from defenders in the open field.
- 27:02Speaker 3: And that's why some running back coaches were like, you know,
- 27:06Speaker 3: I want to move on to other guys, but to me,
- 27:09Speaker 3: that's a pro runner. He's gonna get what's there and
- 27:13Speaker 3: he's gonna break tackles, and he's hellacious and pass protection
- 27:18Speaker 3: and that is hard to find in a young back.
- 27:20Speaker 3: So that that's why I think, you know, from a
- 27:24Speaker 3: football perspective, he's he's advancing so quickly and he's taking
- 27:28Speaker 3: snaps with the twos now. So uh, this isn't some
- 27:32Speaker 3: phony discussion we're having. This is a guy who's really rising,
- 27:36Speaker 3: you know daily.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald, everybody ESPN dot com. The question is who's
- 27:41Speaker 1: going to be that number two quarterback? That will be
- 27:43Speaker 1: determined one of the things we're looking for on Friday night.
- 27:46Speaker 1: You read Jeff's latest training camp intell and updates at
- 27:50Speaker 1: ESPN dot com. Click on that Broncos team page. Legie
- 27:54Speaker 1: has got it all covered man, and uh, Jeff Lakewald,
- 27:57Speaker 1: he's got a good eye for for editing and getting
- 28:01Speaker 1: you the most important information that you need to know
- 28:04Speaker 1: what's going on with the Broncos.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Leggy awesome as always, man, Thank you, Thank smellings.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I appreciate you.
