- 0:07Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. My name is Craig
- 0:09Speaker 1: wya do. Thank you very much for joining us. Glad
- 0:11Speaker 1: to have you with us on this Thursday afternoon. We're
- 0:14Speaker 1: with you up until five o'clock. Hey, a reminder, we
- 0:17Speaker 1: have a special edition, a basketball preview edition of Longhorn
- 0:22Speaker 1: Weekly with Longhorn's head basketball coach Rodney Terry, coming your
- 0:27Speaker 1: way at six o'clock tonight live from Pluckers the West.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Campus location in Austin. And I hope you can.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Join us for that one as we'll be out there
- 0:41Speaker 1: with Coach Terry at six o'clock. We'll look forward to that,
- 0:44Speaker 1: but up till then two to five here on the program.
- 0:48Speaker 1: A lot to get to on the program today, and
- 0:52Speaker 1: we're happy to bring it to you. We of course
- 0:53Speaker 1: includes the producer for this program. It's Cameron D.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Parker.
- 0:59Speaker 1: The on the burst tipiggest stands for Dallas, as in
- 1:02Speaker 1: the team that he roots for but refuses to watch
- 1:06Speaker 1: on television. Would it be too presumptuous of me to
- 1:10Speaker 1: suggest to you that just today today only Cameron.
- 1:14Speaker 2: The D can stand for Dodgers.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yes, congratulations to you, Craig Way and the Los Angeles
- 1:20Speaker 3: Dodgers for winning the World Series yesterday. H fantastic end
- 1:25Speaker 3: to what they called a crazy year and it certainly was.
- 1:28Speaker 3: And I mean down five nothing in that game, down
- 1:32Speaker 3: two to one to the Padres before the World Series.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Did they come back down five to nothing in that game?
- 1:38Speaker 3: The Bronx is going crazy. You're thinking, uh, oh, first
- 1:41Speaker 3: ever team to go be down three to zero the
- 1:43Speaker 3: fours of game six, you're going back to Los Angeles
- 1:46Speaker 3: and then the fifth that he happened and the rest
- 1:48Speaker 3: is history. So congrats to Craig. Why who who's dotting
- 1:51Speaker 3: is Los Angeles Dodgers uniform?
- 1:53Speaker 1: I got the I got the Dodger row jersey, the
- 1:55Speaker 1: authentic road jersey on the day to Payterriot. Yes, And
- 1:59Speaker 1: for folks, I know there's probably a few of you
- 2:02Speaker 1: out there going, why in the world's he a Dodger fan?
- 2:04Speaker 1: What is the deal with that? He didn't grown in California,
- 2:07Speaker 1: never the lived in California. You know what, what's the
- 2:10Speaker 1: situation with that? I did just very quickly in a
- 2:14Speaker 1: nutshell For those who didn't know, when I grew up
- 2:15Speaker 1: in North Carolina, there was no major League baseball team.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Still isn't no major League baseball team. The other closest
- 2:21Speaker 1: ones were Atlanta, which is three hundred and thirty miles away,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and Washington when the Senators were there, so a little
- 2:26Speaker 1: long way off.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Neither were good at the time.
- 2:29Speaker 1: My dad, when I was a little kid, used to
- 2:31Speaker 1: tell used to tell me stories and my other younger
- 2:35Speaker 1: brother coming at night.
- 2:36Speaker 2: We were talking baseball and stuff.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And he had grown up a Yankee fan, and in fact,
- 2:40Speaker 1: he went to two World Series games in the early
- 2:42Speaker 1: fifties fifty two and fifty three when the Yankees played
- 2:45Speaker 1: the Dodgers, and saw two World Series games when he
- 2:48Speaker 1: got to sit in the center field bleachers on his
- 2:51Speaker 1: army id, his GIID for one dollar, got to sit
- 2:55Speaker 1: in the World Series game, to watch a game in
- 2:58Speaker 1: fifty two, in a game in fifty three, to see
- 3:00Speaker 1: the Dodgers and the Yankees. So he used to tell
- 3:01Speaker 1: me these stories as a Yankee fan, and I like
- 3:04Speaker 1: the team named Dodgers. My favorite color was blue. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: then the you know it is with kids, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 1: easily impression and all that. In the first package of
- 3:11Speaker 1: baseball cards I opened up. There was Bill Russell, the
- 3:13Speaker 1: Dodger shortstop. So I was hooked then and have been
- 3:16Speaker 1: ever since. Long suffering, been through the lean times and
- 3:19Speaker 1: the good times as well.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And for folks, what's suffering? Listen last night?
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it was their second World title in the last
- 3:27Speaker 1: five years, but folks had always been wanting to put
- 3:30Speaker 1: an asterisk around that one. In twenty twenty because of
- 3:32Speaker 1: the shortened season due to the pandemic, they played sixty
- 3:35Speaker 1: games and they were far and away the best team
- 3:37Speaker 1: that won forty three of the sixty in the regular
- 3:39Speaker 1: season and went on through the playoffs and won it.
- 3:41Speaker 2: But still in the minds of some they didn't consider that,
- 3:44Speaker 2: you know, a full tile.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Even Alex Vdugo kind of said as much, but he
- 3:49Speaker 1: was just kind of feeling salty because he was involved
- 3:51Speaker 1: in the Mookie.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Bets trade and made him mad. He didn't want to
- 3:53Speaker 2: leave La and.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Went to Boston and then of course down with the Yankees,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and he turned out to be the final out of
- 3:59Speaker 1: the ballgame last night, And so there was that Prior
- 4:04Speaker 1: to that. The last time they won a World Series
- 4:05Speaker 1: was nineteen eighty eight. The Kurt Gibson home run'd been
- 4:08Speaker 1: thirty six years since they'd won a World Series in
- 4:10Speaker 1: a full season, so yeah, there was some long suffering
- 4:13Speaker 1: years in there, but I was obviously thrilled and excited.
- 4:16Speaker 1: My wife Lindon I watched it and we were pretty
- 4:18Speaker 1: we were on pins and needles. And I watch seriously
- 4:23Speaker 1: conservative estimate somewhere between one hundred and one hundred and
- 4:29Speaker 1: twenty games a year of the Dodgers because having the
- 4:32Speaker 1: baseball package and they play a lot of late night
- 4:34Speaker 1: West Coast games, so I'd say probably in the neighborhood
- 4:37Speaker 1: of one hundred and ten of their one hundred and
- 4:38Speaker 1: sixty two I watched this year, So yeah, fully invested
- 4:41Speaker 1: as a fan in the gear and I saw him
- 4:44Speaker 1: in Houston play this year, and I've been to two
- 4:45Speaker 1: of their World Series games, won in Boston when Mooie
- 4:48Speaker 1: Betts was playing for the Red Sox when they won
- 4:50Speaker 1: in twenty eighteen, and then in the pandemic here in
- 4:52Speaker 1: twenty twenty, got the seem in Arlington and Globe Life
- 4:56Speaker 1: Game one was right down close to the field, seeing
- 4:58Speaker 1: Clayton Kershaw pitch against the race.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm fully into it.
- 5:01Speaker 1: That's why I'm a Dodger fan, but I'm also a
- 5:04Speaker 1: big baseball fan, and it was quite quite a night
- 5:09Speaker 1: in a number of ways. Well, we're talk more about
- 5:11Speaker 1: that coming up. Also, just to let you know what
- 5:14Speaker 1: else is coming up on the program. In the three
- 5:17Speaker 1: o'clock hour, Gene Watson, our MLB insider works with the
- 5:21Speaker 1: Chicago White Sox, will join us one final time this
- 5:24Speaker 1: season to recap the season and the World Series. That'll
- 5:27Speaker 1: be in the three o'clock hour. In the four o'clock hour,
- 5:30Speaker 1: we told you about this yesterday, we'll talk get into
- 5:33Speaker 1: some in depth on the College Football Playoff with Rich Clark,
- 5:38Speaker 1: the executive director of the College Football Playoff. He'll join
- 5:41Speaker 1: us on the program. He did a webinar yesterday that
- 5:44Speaker 1: I was linked into and watched, and he'll join us
- 5:49Speaker 1: on the program in the four o'clock hour to talk
- 5:52Speaker 1: about that. So we've got inconceivable. A little bit later
- 5:55Speaker 1: on this hour, we'll talk some NBA, also some NFL.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Is an NFL game to night. The Texans are playing
- 6:02Speaker 1: the night playing the New York Jets. We'll get into
- 6:04Speaker 1: all of it. I promise we'll get to all of
- 6:06Speaker 1: those things. Now. As far as the series goes, there
- 6:13Speaker 1: was a lot of you know, it was a great
- 6:14Speaker 1: deal of excitement about it being Yankees, Dodgers, and two
- 6:18Speaker 1: of the Hallmark franchises, and the two were meeting for
- 6:21Speaker 1: the twelve time, more than any other pairing of teams
- 6:25Speaker 1: in World Series history, and so there was all kinds
- 6:28Speaker 1: of history that was spilled out in this Freddie Freeman
- 6:32Speaker 1: becoming the first guy to homer in four consecutive games
- 6:35Speaker 1: of a World Series, and it made it six in
- 6:37Speaker 1: a row, going back to two games with Atlanta against
- 6:40Speaker 1: Houston three years ago in twenty twenty one. So he
- 6:43Speaker 1: holds the Major League record for most consecutive games with
- 6:46Speaker 1: a home run hit in World Series play at six,
- 6:49Speaker 1: two with Atlanta and then four in a row with
- 6:51Speaker 1: the Dodgers.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And he would come up with a gigantic hit last night.
- 6:55Speaker 2: It wasn't a homer, but a big hit.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So there was that bit of history you pointed out camera,
- 7:00Speaker 1: and the Yankees were trying to become the first team
- 7:02Speaker 1: not only to achieve what was pretty much looked as
- 7:05Speaker 1: being impossible, overcoming a three to nothing deficit to win
- 7:09Speaker 1: a World Series, but in the history of the World Series,
- 7:14Speaker 1: no team had ever been able to move it beyond
- 7:16Speaker 1: game five, and in fact, twenty four times a team
- 7:21Speaker 1: had been up three games to none, twenty one of
- 7:25Speaker 1: the twenty four it ended in the next game a sweep.
- 7:29Speaker 1: There had not been a World Series where a team
- 7:33Speaker 1: was up three games to none that even got extended
- 7:36Speaker 1: to a fifth game since nineteen seventy. The Reds were
- 7:40Speaker 1: down three games to none to Baltimore, they won Game four,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and then the Orioles clinched it in Game five, so
- 7:45Speaker 1: no team had ever even gotten into Game six. The
- 7:49Speaker 1: Yankees appeared to be in prime position to do that
- 7:51Speaker 1: for two reasons. One, they jumped all over Jack Flarerty,
- 7:54Speaker 1: the Dodger starter who did not have it last night.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Aaron Judge hit a home run, John Carlo Stanton hit
- 8:01Speaker 1: a home run. Jass chisholmhit a home run. They're up
- 8:03Speaker 1: five to nothing and they're rolling. Not only that, Garrett
- 8:08Speaker 1: Cole was looking unhittable on the mouth, in fact, he
- 8:11Speaker 1: was unhittable for the first four innings. Also, in the
- 8:14Speaker 1: fourth inning, Aaron Judge made a great leaping catch against
- 8:18Speaker 1: the fence to take away extra basis from Freddie Freeman.
- 8:22Speaker 2: So you're thinking Judge is back.
- 8:26Speaker 1: All rise, he hit the home run, he made the
- 8:28Speaker 1: great catch, Aaron Judge was in was he was back.
- 8:33Speaker 1: This Yankee team looked completely different than you know, the
- 8:37Speaker 1: first three ball games, even different in the Game four.
- 8:39Speaker 2: They looked aggressive.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It looked like for sure this thing was going to
- 8:43Speaker 1: head back to Los Angeles for Game five. And then
- 8:46Speaker 1: in this point was raised and I'm in complete agreement
- 8:49Speaker 1: with it. If this thing gets to game six in LA,
- 8:54Speaker 1: I think all the pressure would have shifted to the
- 8:57Speaker 1: Dodgers because they're up three to nothing. An no team
- 8:59Speaker 1: that ever even let get the game six. Now, what's
- 9:02Speaker 1: going back to game six? And you had Rodin ready
- 9:05Speaker 1: to go for the Yankees? Heel could go in game seven. Yes,
- 9:08Speaker 1: the Dodgers would have Yama Mota ready for Game six
- 9:10Speaker 1: and if necessary, Walker Buler.
- 9:12Speaker 2: For Game seven.
- 9:13Speaker 1: But it just it all the momentum riding in the
- 9:17Speaker 1: way the Yankees were swinging the bats and all this,
- 9:20Speaker 1: and even when they weren't scoring, they were keeping the
- 9:21Speaker 1: Dodgers pitching on the ropes. Dave Roberts was having his
- 9:25Speaker 1: pitcher after pitcher. All of a sudden it became a
- 9:27Speaker 1: bullpen game because Flairdy lasted just an inning and a third.
- 9:31Speaker 1: So now he's just he's burning up pitchers, going through
- 9:33Speaker 1: just trying to keep the Dodgers on the fringe of contention.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Then we get to the fifth inning, Garrett Cole was
- 9:40Speaker 1: not allowed to hit, he'd walked a baut Her, not
- 9:42Speaker 1: allowed to hit. Key k Hernandez comes to the plate.
- 9:48Speaker 1: He's batting I believe, sixth, and he lines a single
- 9:52Speaker 1: the left. Okay, so Garrett Cole showed a little bit
- 9:57Speaker 1: of the human touch.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Hey, he's human. He gave up a base hit. In fact,
- 9:59Speaker 2: in maybe even think of Rocky for he's.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Got you know or whatever, you know, the drago that.
- 10:05Speaker 2: That he bleeds like everybody else.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Well, so then it looked like with the next man
- 10:14Speaker 1: coming to the plate, Tommy Edmund that it was going
- 10:18Speaker 1: to be a routine fly ball to center and it
- 10:19Speaker 1: was going to be out number one with a runner
- 10:21Speaker 1: at first base. Aaron Judge comes running in and the
- 10:25Speaker 1: Fox camera showed this on replay. You couldn't see it
- 10:27Speaker 1: in real time, but John Smalllt, who I think is
- 10:29Speaker 1: an outstanding analyst, pointed it out. He said Judge took
- 10:32Speaker 1: his eyes off the ball, just for a moment to
- 10:35Speaker 1: see if Hernandez was straying too far from first base,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and in that moment he lost. The ball went right
- 10:42Speaker 1: off his glove, he dropped it and then he scrambled,
- 10:45Speaker 1: picked up, fired to second. Hernandez was able to hustle
- 10:48Speaker 1: and slide in the second. So now you have runners
- 10:50Speaker 1: at first and second with no out. Okay, you know,
- 10:55Speaker 1: but we you know, we've we've seen cold work through
- 10:58Speaker 1: issues in the past, and he probably able to do it.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Then comes Will Smith. He hits a ground ball in
- 11:05Speaker 1: the hole at short and then Volpi Anthony Boltby picks
- 11:10Speaker 1: it up. He really only has one play and that's
- 11:13Speaker 1: to go to third, and so he did. The problem
- 11:17Speaker 1: was the throw bounced in. So now that's a second
- 11:19Speaker 1: error in the inning on the feeler's choice, and now
- 11:22Speaker 1: the bases are loaded with nobody out. Well, then Cole
- 11:26Speaker 1: seems to settle back in. He then strikes out Gavin
- 11:30Speaker 1: Lucks for out number one. He strikes out Shoeo Tani
- 11:33Speaker 1: for out number two. It looks like he's got it
- 11:36Speaker 1: recovered and he's going to get out of the inning,
- 11:38Speaker 1: and it really looks like it when he gets Mookie
- 11:41Speaker 1: Betts to have a hit. A top spin ground ball
- 11:44Speaker 1: spinning toward first, it looks like it's going to be
- 11:46Speaker 1: a routine three to one play to the bag, and
- 11:48Speaker 1: the inning's going to be over or maybe even three unassisted.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Problem was Anthony Rizzo. When the ball was spinning with
- 11:55Speaker 1: all that top spin, it kind of curved towards second,
- 11:58Speaker 1: and so when he went and scooped it up, that
- 12:02Speaker 1: stopped any four momentum he might have had gone to the.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Bag at first.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Meanwhile, Garrett Cole, who started to run the bag, said
- 12:09Speaker 1: he took the wrong angle and then he just froze.
- 12:11Speaker 1: He stopped, and so Betts was easily able to beat
- 12:18Speaker 1: Rizzo to the bag. So the inning's still going. It's
- 12:20Speaker 1: still two outs. A run has scored, but it's still
- 12:23Speaker 1: five to one. It's still two outs. All Garrett coll
- 12:27Speaker 1: has to do is get one more out. Freddie Freeman
- 12:31Speaker 1: rips a line drive single the center to run score
- 12:33Speaker 1: five to three. Still, he only needs one more out
- 12:37Speaker 1: to get out of the inning. Taey Oscar Andiz rips
- 12:40Speaker 1: a double to the gap in the left center. Now
- 12:41Speaker 1: the game is tied at five. And then he got
- 12:44Speaker 1: out of the inning. And even though the Yankees went
- 12:46Speaker 1: back up on the sack pine six. The Dodgers came
- 12:48Speaker 1: back with a pair of sack flies, one in the eighth,
- 12:51Speaker 1: one in the ninth, and so they get the win.
- 12:54Speaker 1: So it was stunning to a lot of people to
- 12:58Speaker 1: see the way that that kind of melt down.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And we'll recap a little bit.
- 13:03Speaker 1: We need to break there's a couple of quotes I
- 13:05Speaker 1: want to get to and get your thoughts on it
- 13:07Speaker 1: cam about how this wound up, and then we're going
- 13:10Speaker 1: to get into some football as well. So in an
- 13:13Speaker 1: amazing end to the World Series and quite unexpected and
- 13:17Speaker 1: yet maybe not. We'll get to that coming up when
- 13:19Speaker 1: we continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
- 13:21Speaker 1: in the irt Radio app.
