- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Let's Talk is proudly presented by attorney Frank Walker. Real talk,
- 0:29Speaker 2: real experience, real results. FrankWalkerLaw.com. Let the conversation begin on
- 0:35Speaker 2: Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
- 0:39Speaker 3: And I have the queen in the building, Lisa Odie. Hello.
- 0:45Speaker 4: And Hollis Lewis. What's up, what's up?
- 0:47Speaker 3: And today, we're going to try to cover like a
- 0:51Speaker 3: whole host of different things today.
- 0:55Speaker 5: A mini version of First Take.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Yes.
- 0:58Speaker 5: A mini version.
- 0:59Speaker 4: And led by The queen, Ms.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Odie.
- 1:04Speaker 3: And me and Hollis are her co-hosts for the show today,
- 1:07Speaker 3: and we'll just go from here.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Let's go.
- 1:09Speaker 5: Yes, all right.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Let's do that.
- 1:11Speaker 5: So Carl approached me about trying this new format, and
- 1:15Speaker 5: I was open to it. You know, I'm open to
- 1:17Speaker 5: new things.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Well, you're in charge. Well, I like.
- 1:22Speaker 5: That even better. Not only am I open to new things,
- 1:24Speaker 5: but when I'm in charge in that new thing, it
- 1:26Speaker 5: really appeals to me. But anyway... So we've got an
- 1:29Speaker 5: overall theme tonight, and I know coaching was one of
- 1:32Speaker 5: the things that Carl had mentioned in our thread this week,
- 1:35Speaker 5: but we also want to talk about collegiate football. I
- 1:38Speaker 5: know there were a few games this past weekend, but
- 1:41Speaker 5: the traditional opening of most of college football conference play
- 1:46Speaker 5: or out of conference and conference play will be starting
- 1:49Speaker 5: Labor Day weekend, which is coming up this weekend. So
- 1:52Speaker 5: we're going to talk about our two home state teams
- 1:55Speaker 5: first to open, WVU and Marshall. And this question I'm
- 1:59Speaker 5: going to ask both of you. I'll start with you, Carl.
- 2:01Speaker 5: But how important is the outcome of the opening game
- 2:06Speaker 5: for setting the mental tone and confidence for the rest
- 2:08Speaker 5: of the season for a team?
- 2:10Speaker 3: I think it's critical, and I'll say I think it's
- 2:14Speaker 3: critical from the coach's point of view because it takes
- 2:20Speaker 3: the team into some kind of a place of confidence.
- 2:24Speaker 3: But what happens in that is, let's say you're a
- 2:32Speaker 3: struggling team. Likely you're going to end up being a
- 2:37Speaker 3: team that you're going to play a team that's going
- 2:38Speaker 3: to use you to make money, you know? And so
- 2:43Speaker 3: that game is a game that you're not likely going
- 2:46Speaker 3: to win, but what you want, that coach wants to
- 2:48Speaker 3: see is how good you will play, how hard you'll play,
- 2:51Speaker 3: that type of thing.
- 2:52Speaker 4: If that answers... Yeah.
- 2:54Speaker 5: It depends on what side of the coin you're on. Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 5: Whether you're the one traveling or you're the host.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 3:01Speaker 5: What do you think?
- 3:02Speaker 4: I think it depends on your level.
- 3:04Speaker 6: So if you're like, obviously, if you're LSU, Alabama, you're
- 3:06Speaker 6: a power for a program that knows out of conference
- 3:09Speaker 6: games are going to be critical for us.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Playoff positions.
- 3:11Speaker 6: Now, the good thing about what's happening now is like
- 3:14Speaker 6: playoff at every division is that that's not necessarily going
- 3:18Speaker 6: to determine whether you go to the playoffs. So, you know,
- 3:22Speaker 6: so it's not necessarily a win or loss. And I
- 3:24Speaker 6: think to me, you know, and we'll talk about this
- 3:27Speaker 6: later doing color commentating for state. What I kind of
- 3:31Speaker 6: saw from that point of view was that it's very
- 3:34Speaker 6: important to get your guys reps. So, for example, you know,
- 3:38Speaker 6: if you get up big, then you can get your
- 3:40Speaker 6: twos and threes in the game and get them some
- 3:42Speaker 6: game time action. Because unfortunately, in college, you don't have
- 3:44Speaker 6: the luxury of getting, you know, having like inner squad
- 3:48Speaker 6: scrimmages and, you know, against different teams and gridaramas and
- 3:52Speaker 6: different things of that nature. Or even if you get down,
- 3:55Speaker 6: you can either get those inexperienced starters, more and more reps,
- 3:58Speaker 6: you can kind of experiment, or you can get those
- 4:00Speaker 6: other twos and threes in. So I think it's a
- 4:02Speaker 6: good opportunity to set the tone, not only, you know,
- 4:05Speaker 6: whether you win or lose, but it's also a good
- 4:07Speaker 6: opportunity to get your players reps.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, Hollis, with that, because I
- 4:12Speaker 3: think that's a good analogy and.
- 4:18Speaker 3: But what happens– okay, so let's go back to, like,
- 4:23Speaker 3: let's say West Virginia State when I was there.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Okay, so.
- 4:27Speaker 3: With the fan base not necessarily having any great expectation
- 4:32Speaker 3: and let's say we are not winning– let's just say
- 4:38Speaker 3: we're midway through the season and we're not really winning
- 4:40Speaker 3: and you have– you're playing a team that is really
- 4:45Speaker 3: good and we're just not able to– Keep up.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Keep up with them.
- 4:52Speaker 3: What is your thought process now as the head coach?
- 4:56Speaker 4: What are you doing?
- 4:57Speaker 3: Are you keeping your players in, or are you trying
- 5:01Speaker 3: to get some experience from the younger players to get
- 5:06Speaker 3: them into it?
- 5:07Speaker 6: Again, I think it depends on where you're at at
- 5:09Speaker 6: that midway season. So, again, opening day is a little different.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:12Speaker 6: But if you're midway through the season and you still
- 5:14Speaker 6: got a legitimate shot to either get a playoff run– or,
- 5:18Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying, or, you know, win a
- 5:22Speaker 6: conference maybe, then you want to, you know, keep those
- 5:25Speaker 6: guys in. Or maybe you want to get some of
- 5:27Speaker 6: those twos and threes some experience. And again, it also
- 5:30Speaker 6: depends on kind of who you got coming up. So
- 5:32Speaker 6: you got to sort of play it by ear. And
- 5:33Speaker 6: I think that's sort of a team by team thing. Yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 6: But you want to make sure No matter what. And
- 5:38Speaker 6: I guess I could kind of sum it up as this.
- 5:40Speaker 6: No matter where you're at, whether you got a big
- 5:42Speaker 6: win or your big loss, you have to coach through
- 5:44Speaker 6: the game.
- 5:45Speaker 1: OK.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:46Speaker 4: So those you got to you got to call this.
- 5:48Speaker 6: And again, sometimes I think people think like you're, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 6: running up the score. But now I got to coach
- 5:53Speaker 6: these twos and threes like I'm coaching the ones because
- 5:55Speaker 6: I'm going to need some of those guys to play.
- 5:57Speaker 6: And I need my ones and twos to actually be
- 5:59Speaker 6: able to like finish out games as well.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 5: So I'm going to move on, and you both kind
- 6:04Speaker 5: of touched on this, but I'm going to kind of
- 6:06Speaker 5: take this question a little bit further because it's going
- 6:08Speaker 5: to be related to our home teams and what they're
- 6:10Speaker 5: facing this weekend. So you have WVU in Morgantown. They're
- 6:14Speaker 5: the hosts. They're hosting Coastal Carolina in Morgantown, of course.
- 6:17Speaker 5: And then you've got Marshall who's visiting the Nittany Lions
- 6:21Speaker 5: at Penn State. So, you know, there's got to be
- 6:24Speaker 5: some different strategies those coaches are going to use when
- 6:26Speaker 5: they take their guys out on the field. What do
- 6:28Speaker 5: you think the different coaching strategies would be in those
- 6:32Speaker 5: two different situations with WVU facing, you know, being the host,
- 6:36Speaker 5: and then you've got Marshall going to Penn State?
- 6:40Speaker 3: I would say Marshall going to Penn State, I think
- 6:45Speaker 3: they're going to come out. You're going to obviously play
- 6:47Speaker 3: your starters. You're going to go out and try to compete.
- 6:52Speaker 3: And if I think this is the situation that I
- 6:55Speaker 3: think in my head of what happens, let's say it's,
- 7:00Speaker 3: 30 to nothing, you know, at the end of the
- 7:03Speaker 3: first quarter or something like that. What are you doing?
- 7:07Speaker 3: Are you– hopefully they're going to– they'll sub. If they sub,
- 7:12Speaker 3: then we need to sub so that we can get
- 7:14Speaker 3: some of that experience.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Some of our kids can get that experience.
- 7:17Speaker 5: You don't keep your starters in.
- 7:17Speaker 4: I'm not going to keep them in if I can
- 7:20Speaker 4: do that.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:20Speaker 4: And that's going to depend on what they do. Okay.
- 7:23Speaker 3: You know, if they start to sub to their second teams,
- 7:27Speaker 3: third teams, I'm going to try to get to my
- 7:29Speaker 3: second team or third team immediately. And there'll be some
- 7:31Speaker 3: people who would say, no, I'm keeping my starters in
- 7:33Speaker 3: because I want them to play.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 3: And to be able to play against a quality team.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Okay.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 4: That works.
- 7:42Speaker 5: What do you think, Hollis?
- 7:43Speaker 4: I think, so let's take Marshall first.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:46Speaker 4: So you're going to a step up in competition.
- 7:48Speaker 6: Yes.
- 7:49Speaker 4: So you want to go in healthy. You want to
- 7:51Speaker 4: come out healthy. There you go. Number one.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Right, right.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Number one.
- 7:54Speaker 6: But also, we've seen Marshall in the past beat Virginia Tech.
- 7:58Speaker 6: We've seen him beat Notre Dame. So it's a precedent
- 8:01Speaker 6: to say, hey, they can win this game.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:03Speaker 6: Now, the danger in that is you have such a
- 8:07Speaker 6: big game, big program, huge win. Sometimes I think what
- 8:11Speaker 6: can happen in those situations, that's the Super Bowl.
- 8:14Speaker 4: We did it.
- 8:14Speaker 6: And the rest of the season can be like a letdown.
- 8:17Speaker 6: So it can be a good thing or bad thing.
- 8:19Speaker 6: But I think, number one, you want to go in
- 8:20Speaker 6: healthy and you want to exit healthy. When you're talking
- 8:24Speaker 6: about WVU, and shout out to our WVU president. You know,
- 8:27Speaker 6: he was the president of Coastal Carolina, so it's kind
- 8:29Speaker 6: of a, you know, thing. But for WVU kind of
- 8:34Speaker 6: playing down, quote unquote down, you want to assert dominance.
- 8:38Speaker 4: So you want to start fast, and you want to
- 8:41Speaker 4: end that game.
- 8:42Speaker 6: You want that game to be 35-none, 42-none. You want
- 8:46Speaker 6: to go in. You want to hit them hard. You
- 8:48Speaker 6: want to be able to about a third, late third,
- 8:50Speaker 6: fourth quarter, you want to get your twos and threes in.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:53Speaker 6: And you want to even them get some touches and
- 8:55Speaker 6: maybe a touchdown or two. So for WVU, you want
- 8:58Speaker 6: to assert dominance early and you want to finish that
- 9:00Speaker 6: game out with little to no quote-unquote competition or resistance
- 9:05Speaker 6: from the other side.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 9:06Speaker 5: And I think the theme, excuse me, for both of
- 9:08Speaker 5: you is to come out of those games injury-free.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:11Speaker 5: First game, try to keep everybody healthy.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Particularly for Marshall.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Yeah, particularly for Marshall. Okay, so we're going to move
- 9:16Speaker 5: on to the next question. So we've got the coaches
- 9:19Speaker 5: at WU, Coach Rich Rod, he's in his second year
- 9:23Speaker 5: there in Morgantown, and so is Coach Tony Gibson at Marshall.
- 9:28Speaker 5: So what do you think the difference is in fan
- 9:32Speaker 5: base expectations are at those two schools? What do you
- 9:36Speaker 5: think the expectations are for the fans in Morgantown compared
- 9:39Speaker 5: to the ones in Huntington?
- 9:41Speaker 3: I think they both are going to be high. Just
- 9:47Speaker 3: because it's Marshall, just because it's WVU, the understanding of
- 9:53Speaker 3: what the expectation is for the team, it's always high
- 9:57Speaker 3: no matter who you're playing.
- 9:59Speaker 4: I don't know if the fans.
- 10:00Speaker 3: base is always caring about who the team is that
- 10:07Speaker 3: you're playing. They want to see you win. And I
- 10:10Speaker 3: think that's the most important thing. And then you'll get
- 10:13Speaker 3: some folks coming out of there saying, well, you know what?
- 10:15Speaker 3: We did play well. You know, we did play well
- 10:17Speaker 3: against them. And you're okay. Because I don't know if
- 10:20Speaker 3: this is the kind of game that you could say.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Oh, we need a new coach. You know, I don't
- 10:25Speaker 4: think this is that kind of game. And it's so
- 10:27Speaker 4: early anyway.
- 10:28Speaker 6: Right.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Now, the question was about the season.
- 10:31Speaker 5: About the season. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not just the game.
- 10:33Speaker 4: The whole season.
- 10:34Speaker 6: Again, and I know these are two very different fan bases.
- 10:38Speaker 6: And I think probably more Marshall where if you're rooting
- 10:41Speaker 6: for Marshall, you probably kind of root for WVU a
- 10:43Speaker 6: little bit. I think just in general, and I take
- 10:45Speaker 6: it as a state perspective, they want to see a winner, right?
- 10:49Speaker 6: I think it's been a long time because you got
- 10:51Speaker 6: to understand where we were 20, 30 years ago, right?
- 10:54Speaker 6: We had two programs that were rolling. And if you
- 10:57Speaker 6: count Shepard in that, we had two– Three programs within
- 11:00Speaker 6: the state that were actually competing for national championships, big-time
- 11:04Speaker 6: bowl games, had big-time players, and at Division II level
- 11:08Speaker 6: were in and out of the playoffs and championships every
- 11:10Speaker 6: single year. And it's been down for about the last
- 11:13Speaker 6: five to ten years. So I think now what the
- 11:16Speaker 6: fan base on either side wants to see, and I
- 11:20Speaker 6: think they will root for one another, they want to
- 11:22Speaker 6: see Marshall win that. conference and dominate. They want to
- 11:26Speaker 6: see a big-time player emerge, right? You want to see
- 11:29Speaker 6: a player emerge from Marshall. I think Marshall's always been player-dominant,
- 11:34Speaker 6: at least on a West Virginia level, and West Virginia's
- 11:36Speaker 6: been team-dominant, right? So I think if we can see
- 11:39Speaker 6: a player emerge where it's just a big-time, first-round draft
- 11:42Speaker 6: pick type of guy, I think that would serve the
- 11:44Speaker 6: fan base.
- 11:45Speaker 4: If we see WVU.
- 11:47Speaker 6: compete in the Big 12 to come down to where
- 11:50Speaker 6: we're competing for the conference title and possibly creep into
- 11:54Speaker 6: the playoffs. Maybe we're the 12th seed. Maybe we're just
- 11:57Speaker 6: outside the cups of that. So I think, to me,
- 12:00Speaker 6: if we could achieve one or two or maybe both
- 12:03Speaker 6: of those things, to me, that's a successful season.
- 12:06Speaker 4: I agree.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I agree with that, and I think that's a great point.
- 12:09Speaker 3: And especially with the the love of Marshall and the
- 12:16Speaker 3: love of WVU.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Dedicated fans.
- 12:19Speaker 3: The dedicated fans. I don't know if they always cross.
- 12:24Speaker 3: They don't always cross paths.
- 12:27Speaker 5: They don't always hold hands.
- 12:28Speaker 4: They don't always hold.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Hands, but I do think they are proud of both
- 12:33Speaker 3: of them if they're winning in a big game.
- 12:35Speaker 6: And I think, like, if you look back, like, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 6: a Byron Leftwich, a Randy Moss, a Chad Pennington, in
- 12:40Speaker 6: the state, we take ownership of that.
- 12:42Speaker 4: That's true. You know, whether you're WVU or Marshall. So
- 12:43Speaker 4: I think.
- 12:44Speaker 6: That's what I would like to see. I would like
- 12:46Speaker 6: to see us get back to sort of that.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Yeah. Do you think that there's– well, let me ask
- 12:55Speaker 4: this question.
- 12:56Speaker 3: How long does it take for the fan base to
- 12:59Speaker 3: see that star? This is one season. No, but do
- 13:03Speaker 3: you think– I'm talking about in that season. Let's say
- 13:07Speaker 3: I do well in the first game.
- 13:09Speaker 4: I see what you're saying.
- 13:09Speaker 6: I think once you get to conference play, I think,
- 13:11Speaker 6: you know– If you're out of conference, maybe you're out
- 13:14Speaker 6: of a game or two, woo, woo, woo. But I
- 13:16Speaker 6: think once you get heavy in a conference player, excuse me,
- 13:18Speaker 6: play games and that player is still dominant, that's when
- 13:22Speaker 6: you start to be like, okay, he's the guy.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Makes sense.
- 13:24Speaker 1: All right.
- 13:25Speaker 5: So here we go. So we've talked about how Marshall
- 13:27Speaker 5: and WU, sometimes the fans support each other. Sometimes they don't,
- 13:31Speaker 5: especially when they're in the Cold Bowl. So here's the
- 13:33Speaker 5: question for you guys. Do you think that playing that
- 13:36Speaker 5: regular game between WVU and Marshall in football is Do
- 13:40Speaker 5: you think that would be something that would hurt or
- 13:42Speaker 5: help the state overall? Are you in favor of the
- 13:45Speaker 5: Cold Bowl returning?
- 13:47Speaker 4: I'm in favor of it.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I think it's something that I think the state would love,
- 13:53Speaker 3: even if WVU is dominant in the game. And if
- 13:57Speaker 3: they're dominant in the game, then I can understand, too,
- 14:00Speaker 3: why Marshall, as an organization, as a team— are saying, like, no,
- 14:06Speaker 3: we don't want to do that every year. But I
- 14:09Speaker 3: think for the state, I think it's a great game
- 14:13Speaker 3: to play.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Do you?
- 14:14Speaker 4: I do.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:15Speaker 4: I really do.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Just because they're the two top college sports organizations in
- 14:21Speaker 3: the state.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Two flagships.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Yes. I think it's ridiculous that they don't play. It's silly.
- 14:28Speaker 6: And I think if you look at it from the
- 14:29Speaker 6: past five years, Marshall would have beat WVU. Past five seasons,
- 14:35Speaker 6: Marshall had.
- 14:36Speaker 4: A better football team.
- 14:38Speaker 6: I'm not saying forever, but I'm saying about the past
- 14:41Speaker 6: five seasons, Marshall's had a better football season, better football team.
- 14:45Speaker 4: They have.
- 14:47Speaker 6: So I think it's ridiculous that they don't play. I
- 14:49Speaker 6: think it's, you know, it's one of them things when
- 14:51Speaker 6: we talk about kind of the. where college sports is going,
- 14:55Speaker 6: we have to get back to this. We got to
- 14:57Speaker 6: get back to Robbins. We can have all.
- 14:59Speaker 4: These walking conferences and do all this stuff.
- 15:02Speaker 5: You've said that before.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Yeah, we can do all this other stuff, but let's
- 15:04Speaker 6: get back to a foundational piece where we can still
- 15:06Speaker 6: hold on a piece of that tradition. I mean, the state,
- 15:09Speaker 6: can you imagine what would be the price of that ticket, right?
- 15:13Speaker 4: Right now?
- 15:14Speaker 5: The last time they played, was it in Morgantown, their
- 15:16Speaker 5: very last meeting? It was in Morgantown, I think. Yeah,
- 15:18Speaker 5: and I don't think they... Yeah, exactly, Randy. I don't think...
- 15:23Speaker 5: I don't think they really, like, increased the prices, did they?
- 15:26Speaker 4: But you know how it is now, though.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It would be, yeah.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Like resellers. We didn't have, like, internet like we do now.
- 15:33Speaker 5: Yeah, you're right. That was back in the old days.
- 15:35Speaker 5: All right, so this question is going to wrap up
- 15:37Speaker 5: our WVU and Marshall football talk for tonight. And this
- 15:41Speaker 5: is just kind of a fun question for you guys.
- 15:44Speaker 5: So if either of you were offered a position to
- 15:47Speaker 5: coach at WVU or Marshall at one of the state schools,
- 15:53Speaker 5: Which one would you choose?
- 15:56Speaker 4: I would take Marshall.
- 15:58Speaker 5: Of course you would.
- 16:00Speaker 6: I mean, it depends. Like, if I'm just going off, like,
- 16:03Speaker 6: fandom and loyalty, like, I'm Marshall. Like, I would take Marshall.
- 16:07Speaker 6: But if I'm, like, trying to get somewhere, I'm trying to, like.
- 16:09Speaker 6: You know, I'm trying to get to that next big
- 16:12Speaker 6: paying job that I'm going WVU.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Yeah, that's exactly. And I think the pressure in Morgantown
- 16:17Speaker 5: is a little more intense because they have, they're in
- 16:20Speaker 5: the Big 12. And, you know, to me, they're both tough.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Coaching jobs.
- 16:26Speaker 4: I think so too, 100%.
- 16:28Speaker 5: But Huntington to me would be the path I would
- 16:30Speaker 5: take first and then go from there.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Well, let me ask this.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Is it possible to go from Marshall to WVU?
- 16:42Speaker 5: Doc Holliday went from WVU to Marshall, right?
- 16:45Speaker 4: See, I can see that. I'm just asking, could you
- 16:50Speaker 4: go the other way?
- 16:52Speaker 5: I think they could.
- 16:52Speaker 4: I think you could. If you're good enough, you're going
- 16:54Speaker 4: to go.
- 16:55Speaker 5: I think that's a possibility. I don't think it's ever happened.
- 16:58Speaker 4: I don't think a head coach, but I think we've
- 17:00Speaker 4: seen a bunch of assistants.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Yeah, assistant coaches.
- 17:03Speaker 6: The school, Charwon played state this weekend. Their coach, he
- 17:08Speaker 6: coached both WVU and Marshall.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Okay, makes sense. All right. Well, speaking of your debut
- 17:13Speaker 5: this past, you just mentioned at Hollis. So we're going
- 17:15Speaker 5: to move on to the next subject for tonight, and
- 17:17Speaker 5: that is, Both of the gentlemen that I'm sitting here
- 17:20Speaker 5: with tonight have experience calling live games. Hollis is currently
- 17:25Speaker 5: at West Virginia State University as the caller announcer, correct?
- 17:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:29Speaker 5: And then Carl was also, you were play-by-play, right, at
- 17:33Speaker 5: Marshall in Huntington for a period of time. It was, what,
- 17:36Speaker 5: a year or two ago? Yeah, just a couple years ago.
- 17:38Speaker 4: A couple years ago.
- 17:39Speaker 5: So I'm going to talk to you guys about those
- 17:40Speaker 5: experiences in the booth beyond the field. Sure. I'll start
- 17:44Speaker 5: with you, Carl. How do you train yourself to match
- 17:47Speaker 5: the speed of a fast-moving game when you're announcing it?
- 17:51Speaker 3: I think as a player, I think it's not as complicated.
- 17:58Speaker 4: As it may seem. And I'll even, I'll say this.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Did you do play-by-play or color? You were color. I
- 18:05Speaker 4: was color. Oh, okay, you were color. Yeah, I was color.
- 18:09Speaker 3: And so I think just depending on where you are
- 18:13Speaker 3: and what role that you're playing, I think that, like
- 18:17Speaker 3: I would say this about Hollis, like I wouldn't have
- 18:19Speaker 3: any problem with him no matter where he was just
- 18:22Speaker 3: because of, you know, who he is. And I think
- 18:25Speaker 3: he can handle both of those kind of jobs and
- 18:27Speaker 3: do a great job with them. For me, I'm more
- 18:32Speaker 3: of freely, you know, I got to talk freely. Like
- 18:35Speaker 3: I don't really have an opportunity. You don't follow a script. No,
- 18:38Speaker 3: I can't do a script and I don't.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Even want to be tied down to one. No, you
- 18:41Speaker 4: do not.
- 18:41Speaker 5: I agree.
- 18:43Speaker 3: So I'll give Hollis the key point as he's the
- 18:48Speaker 3: man in either one.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Of those spots.
- 18:49Speaker 5: How did you do it, Hollis?
- 18:50Speaker 6: Well, the first thing I realized is that like the
- 18:53Speaker 6: play-by-play is such a skill set.
- 18:55Speaker 4: It really is.
- 18:56Speaker 6: Like once you're there and you're seeing everything that he's
- 18:58Speaker 6: looking at. I had the opportunity to go with Daniel
- 19:02Speaker 6: Woods this past weekend and he has like four or
- 19:05Speaker 6: five papers he's looking at. He's rapidly calling the game.
- 19:07Speaker 6: He's You got to have good eye discipline because you
- 19:10Speaker 6: can't necessarily get caught up in like watching the game
- 19:13Speaker 6: as a spectator. He's really keying in, giving players tips
- 19:16Speaker 6: and everything like that. And the thing that I had to,
- 19:19Speaker 6: you know, learn quickly, I'm trying to get my spot in,
- 19:24Speaker 6: in between him doing the play by play. But at
- 19:26Speaker 6: the same time, I'm trying to have some cohesion because
- 19:29Speaker 6: I'm actually trying to not just like insert random things
- 19:33Speaker 6: as he's calling game, but trying to work off of
- 19:35Speaker 6: him a little bit. So it took me probably to
- 19:37Speaker 6: like the third or fourth quarter to get like a
- 19:39Speaker 6: little rhythm going with him.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:41Speaker 6: Because I kind of got to catch up because the
- 19:42Speaker 6: thing where you're doing this type of job, you're really
- 19:45Speaker 6: working off the play-by-play guy because he can't work off
- 19:49Speaker 6: of you.
- 19:49Speaker 5: Right.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Have to work off of him. So, you know, and
- 19:53Speaker 6: like I said, he's moving fast and different things of
- 19:55Speaker 6: that nature. So I try to just really catch up.
- 19:57Speaker 6: I was a little nervous. This was my first time
- 20:00Speaker 6: doing it. So, but I think towards the end of
- 20:02Speaker 6: the game, we started to get a little rhythm.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Good. So, so let me ask you this. So, If
- 20:07Speaker 3: I'm color, so I call, I say, this is what happened.
- 20:12Speaker 3: And then from your seat to your point of, like,
- 20:16Speaker 3: you're playing off of me, now you have to dissect
- 20:19Speaker 3: that and make it into, quote, a fight to where
- 20:23Speaker 3: everybody understands. Is that.
- 20:25Speaker 6: Yeah, it's one of them things, like I said, he's
- 20:27Speaker 6: calling the handoff, da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da. He's doing his play-by-play thing,
- 20:31Speaker 6: and you have to get in there and just give
- 20:33Speaker 6: a quick analysis so you can say, hey, uh... you know,
- 20:37Speaker 6: they threw that interception because, you know, he threw in
- 20:40Speaker 6: the cover too. Or, you know, or you can sneak
- 20:43Speaker 6: it in. Watch the play action here. You know what
- 20:45Speaker 6: I'm saying? You kind of got to sneak it in.
- 20:47Speaker 6: And just from me doing it, and I came back
- 20:49Speaker 6: home after the game, and I watched some other games,
- 20:53Speaker 6: and you could really see the high-level guys who, because
- 20:56Speaker 6: the play-by-play, not to say it's standard, but it's more standardized,
- 20:59Speaker 6: but the high-level guys who do the color, like the
- 21:01Speaker 6: Troy Eggmans and those guys, like, you really see it's
- 21:04Speaker 6: a dip. Like, it's a skillset too. So again, it's
- 21:07Speaker 6: just trying to pick up that rhythm with whoever you're
- 21:10Speaker 6: working with. Cause everybody's style is a little different.
- 21:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Oh, that's, that's good.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 21:14Speaker 5: So, all right. So, um, okay, here's the next question
- 21:17Speaker 5: I have for both of you. And, um, since you
- 21:20Speaker 5: were both doing the, the color announcing for your alma maters, right.
- 21:25Speaker 5: Because you went to Marshall and you, you, you graduated
- 21:28Speaker 5: from W West Virginia state university. How hard is it
- 21:31Speaker 5: when you're doing the game or announcing the game and
- 21:34Speaker 5: to hide your, your kind of your bias for your
- 21:37Speaker 5: former team. Is that, does that ever kind of like
- 21:41Speaker 5: play a factor in, in what you're saying?
- 21:43Speaker 3: And I remember someone telling me that, um, that you
- 21:47Speaker 3: have to be careful with the, with the bias of
- 21:50Speaker 3: your team.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Like, like you can't say like, Oh, man, you know.
- 21:55Speaker 4: They scored a touchdown. Go Hurd. Yeah.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Or go Yellow Jackets or whatever.
- 22:00Speaker 3: You still got to go back and say, okay, such
- 22:03Speaker 3: and such on the other team did this.
- 22:04Speaker 4: He missed this. They did that. That's how we got
- 22:07Speaker 4: the touchdown. Or, see, I said we.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:11Speaker 4: They got the touchdown. Right.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Because you get caught up in the we and it's
- 22:17Speaker 3: us and all those kind of things.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Which you can't really do that.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Right.
- 22:21Speaker 3: It's not you. It's not you. It's not us.
- 22:26Speaker 5: It's the game.
- 22:27Speaker 3: And I think that's the hardest part. I think that
- 22:30Speaker 3: was the hardest part for me is to separate myself
- 22:33Speaker 3: from it.
- 22:34Speaker 6: Well, the way I understood it, I'm calling the Yellow
- 22:38Speaker 6: Jackets game from a Yellow Jackets podcast. So I'm a fan.
- 22:42Speaker 6: I don't, I mean, I'm not hiding it at all. Again,
- 22:44Speaker 6: I think it would be different if you're like an
- 22:46Speaker 6: MBS or CNN or something like that. So I was
- 22:49Speaker 6: not objective at all. But I think the thing that
- 22:52Speaker 6: I had a problem with is not getting caught up
- 22:55Speaker 6: in the game. There was a couple of times where
- 22:56Speaker 6: it was bad play and I like, I took my
- 22:58Speaker 6: headset off and I'm like, what.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Are we doing? You missed a tackle.
- 23:03Speaker 6: So you gotta be careful on those little points. As
- 23:06Speaker 6: far as where I'm at currently, I'm just, hey, I'm
- 23:09Speaker 6: a fan, so I'm not hiding at all. So you're
- 23:12Speaker 6: free to say whatever you want. Now, again, just because
- 23:15Speaker 6: you have listeners at home, you don't want to start saying,
- 23:18Speaker 6: I had to catch myself several times saying, like, we, us.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 23:21Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying? That's the hardest part. Like,
- 23:25Speaker 6: Yellow Jackets, West Virginia State University, WVSU. So I had to, like,
- 23:28Speaker 6: make sure I said that instead of saying, like, us
- 23:32Speaker 6: and we.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Right.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Cause that is, and that's the hardest, that is the
- 23:35Speaker 3: hardest thing is because again, you know that that's your
- 23:38Speaker 3: school and, and you're thinking and you're watching it and
- 23:42Speaker 3: you're like, Oh man, we just messed up or we
- 23:46Speaker 3: just scored. And, and there's just, there's just no place
- 23:49Speaker 3: for that. Unfortunately, you just can't do it.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Okay.
- 23:53Speaker 5: So I'm going to wrap up this segment guys. I'm
- 23:55Speaker 5: going to ask you, and I know the answer to it,
- 23:57Speaker 5: but I want to hear how, how your brain reacts
- 24:00Speaker 5: to this, but, So when you see– of course, you
- 24:03Speaker 5: were a defensive player. You were a quarterback on offense, Hollis.
- 24:06Speaker 5: When you see the other side of the line lining
- 24:09Speaker 5: up against the offense or the defense, and you can
- 24:12Speaker 5: read it, can you just look at– right before the
- 24:16Speaker 5: play takes off, can you pretty much tell what call
- 24:19Speaker 5: is going to be made, what play is going to
- 24:22Speaker 5: be happening just by looking at a lineup from your
- 24:25Speaker 5: past experiences?
- 24:26Speaker 4: Sure. You want to? I would say not necessarily, but
- 24:31Speaker 4: I think there is a rhythm.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 24:33Speaker 6: So like one time during the game, I'd like accurately
- 24:37Speaker 6: like watch the play action here because I knew it
- 24:38Speaker 6: was going to be a play action.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Right.
- 24:40Speaker 6: So like I knew it was coming in. It was
- 24:42Speaker 6: a play action. So there's a couple of times in
- 24:44Speaker 6: which I was able to pick up on the rhythm. Now, again,
- 24:47Speaker 6: you can like assess scheme and I can sometimes tell
- 24:50Speaker 6: what's going on. And again, I think that's one of
- 24:52Speaker 6: the things as you do it more and as you
- 24:54Speaker 6: like interview the team and spend more time with the team,
- 24:57Speaker 6: you'll probably be able to pick up on the calls.
- 24:59Speaker 4: Everything, yeah.
- 24:59Speaker 6: But, you know, particularly with kind of at this level
- 25:03Speaker 6: where you don't necessarily have the tape and the information
- 25:06Speaker 6: about the opposing team, particularly if they're out of conference,
- 25:09Speaker 6: you may not know, but there is a rhythm that you,
- 25:12Speaker 6: being around football your whole life, that you can, you know,
- 25:15Speaker 6: pick up on.
- 25:15Speaker 3: And to that, I'll pick up and kind of describe
- 25:19Speaker 3: the rhythms It's knowing what– like for him as an
- 25:24Speaker 3: offensive player, as a quarterback especially, he's looking at it
- 25:27Speaker 3: and now he's thinking, oh, it's third down and it's three.
- 25:31Speaker 4: Oh, watch this. Right.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Because he can kind of– he's kind of seen it,
- 25:37Speaker 3: understands it, like this might be what it is. For
- 25:39Speaker 3: me as a defensive player, it's exactly the same thing,
- 25:42Speaker 3: just the opposite side of it. And I'm not going
- 25:45Speaker 3: to say you're right all the time, but– it is
- 25:49Speaker 3: just something that you just can't help. It's like sitting there,
- 25:52Speaker 3: like you're looking at it, you're like, and there's a
- 25:54Speaker 3: feel that you get, like.
- 25:56Speaker 5: Because you remember it from when you were on the
- 25:58Speaker 5: field playing.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Oh, they're going to throw a deep ball right here. Hey, guys,
- 26:01Speaker 3: back up, back up. Be looking for the deep ball.
- 26:03Speaker 3: You know, it's just, and it just comes to you.
- 26:06Speaker 3: And I hate to say it, but most of the
- 26:09Speaker 3: time you're accurate on that call.
- 26:12Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know situational football, too. So you know situations.
- 26:15Speaker 5: Right.
- 26:16Speaker 6: You know, third and long, we have an idea about
- 26:17Speaker 6: what they're going to do. And also, you know, once
- 26:19Speaker 6: you get down to where you can start to identify, like,
- 26:22Speaker 6: their personnel, who's the guy who's not, da-da-da-da. So you
- 26:25Speaker 6: can start to, at the very least, you may not
- 26:28Speaker 6: know the play, but you know, like, they're probably going
- 26:30Speaker 6: to be looking for, you know, this receiver or this
- 26:32Speaker 6: running back or whatever.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Because you'll know who the best receiver, the best running back.
- 26:36Speaker 3: You'll know those kinds of things already.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 26:41Speaker 5: So we're going to take a little break from the
- 26:43Speaker 5: coaching theme, and we're going to go into what happened
- 26:46Speaker 5: in the Mountain East Conference this past weekend, Hollis. There
- 26:52Speaker 5: were some things, there were some pretty monumental things that
- 26:56Speaker 5: happened in that conference. I think Concord beat a D1 team.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Is that correct?
- 27:00Speaker 5: Yes, that is correct. And West Virginia Wesleyan broke the
- 27:05Speaker 5: nation's longest losing streak with 35 games. They finally beat,
- 27:09Speaker 5: I think it was post-university. Yeah, yeah. So do you
- 27:14Speaker 5: have anything to add to that?
- 27:16Speaker 6: I mean, this is so good for the conference, right?
- 27:19Speaker 6: I think, you know, like when you can show– because, again,
- 27:22Speaker 6: what we talk about when we talk about NIA on transfer,
- 27:25Speaker 6: we always talk about sort of the pillaging of like
- 27:28Speaker 6: particularly like schools like Concord State and Division II programs.
- 27:32Speaker 6: But I think that when you can have a situation
- 27:35Speaker 6: like this where you can have those players come together
- 27:38Speaker 6: and actually beat, you know, a Division I, II, and
- 27:41Speaker 6: they have Dom Collins.
- 27:42Speaker 4: He played at Princeton. He was a West Virginia Kennedy
- 27:45Speaker 4: Award Player of the Year. He was at WVU.
- 27:47Speaker 6: He was at Concord, then WVU, then transferred back to WVU.
- 27:51Speaker 6: It's letting those kids know that who may not fit
- 27:54Speaker 6: a metric to be at a Division I school, hey,
- 27:56Speaker 6: you can still go to this school and you can
- 27:58Speaker 6: still be just as dominant. You can still have a
- 28:00Speaker 6: place here. You can be an all-time great here. And
- 28:03Speaker 6: if you're that good and if you're that together, then
- 28:05Speaker 6: you can beat those teams. And in addition, like I said,
- 28:08Speaker 6: it sounded like we beat a Division I team, then
- 28:10Speaker 6: we got out of the hole with Wesley. So it
- 28:12Speaker 6: really like shored up the conference. And I hope like
- 28:14Speaker 6: this can just bring an energy to the conference and
- 28:16Speaker 6: we can really– you know, put a bunch of teams
- 28:19Speaker 6: in the playoffs for this year.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:21Speaker 5: I mean, I think referring to the Concord game, you know,
- 28:25Speaker 5: they were previously against D1 schools 0-10. So this was,
- 28:29Speaker 5: you know, I mean, they played.
- 28:30Speaker 4: And that's typical. That's typical.
- 28:33Speaker 5: But they don't shy away from the big games. So
- 28:37Speaker 5: this was a monumental win for them.
- 28:38Speaker 3: And I don't want to– when I say this, I
- 28:40Speaker 3: don't mean to take– take away from the win. But
- 28:44Speaker 3: in most cases, usually those are games that you make money.
- 28:47Speaker 3: The team will pay you to play them.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Yeah, oh, sure.
- 28:49Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a money game.
- 28:51Speaker 3: And now, so think about that. I'm going to pay
- 28:54Speaker 3: you to play, and you then turn around and beat me?
- 28:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, right? That's kind of what Marshall did
- 29:02Speaker 5: at Notre Dame that year. That was embarrassing. I'm sure
- 29:05Speaker 5: some heads rolled on that one.
- 29:07Speaker 4: No question.
- 29:08Speaker 3: And then, so now the question you have is– Do
- 29:11Speaker 3: I want to even do that? And the question becomes,
- 29:15Speaker 3: was this a player issue? Were the players just overconfident,
- 29:18Speaker 3: not playing, thinking that, oh, this is going to be
- 29:22Speaker 3: an easy win? And all of a sudden now, and
- 29:25Speaker 3: you know as well as I do, Hollis, if you
- 29:28Speaker 3: think it's an easy game and you're just out there,
- 29:31Speaker 3: it's hard to turn it like.
- 29:33Speaker 4: You're just going to turn on the greatness all of
- 29:35Speaker 4: a sudden. And I think it's an incentive, right?
- 29:37Speaker 6: So if I'm playing at a Concord or a II team,
- 29:40Speaker 6: I'm playing that Division I because Louisiana Christian beat Northwestern.
- 29:45Speaker 6: So there's like four smaller schools that beat schools in
- 29:49Speaker 6: higher divisions. That's the NIA in whatever it is.
- 29:52Speaker 4: In AIA.
- 29:53Speaker 5: In AIA, yeah.
- 29:54Speaker 4: That beat a Division I team.
- 29:56Speaker 6: So now it's incentive to say, hey, I could get
- 29:59Speaker 6: some tape and I may be able to go to
- 30:00Speaker 6: the next level and get some NIL money. So it's
- 30:03Speaker 6: a real big incentive for those lower level schools playing
- 30:06Speaker 6: those Division I schools now.
- 30:08Speaker 3: So you said about the NIL, are you saying that
- 30:12Speaker 3: if I'm one of those players that had a lot
- 30:14Speaker 3: to do with us winning– All of a sudden, somebody
- 30:17Speaker 3: could see me.
- 30:18Speaker 4: That's some tape against the school.
- 30:20Speaker 6: So if I dominated or played really well, then that
- 30:24Speaker 6: is a justification point to say, hey, if I enter
- 30:27Speaker 6: the transfer portal, then maybe I can go to a
- 30:30Speaker 6: bigger school next year or whatever.
- 30:31Speaker 3: See, and that's the toughest part for the schools in
- 30:38Speaker 3: a situation like that. we're celebrating winning this game and
- 30:42Speaker 3: Hollis was key to us winning it. So now the
- 30:46Speaker 3: question is, can we keep him?
- 30:49Speaker 5: Right, right.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Because now somebody's going to see that. Somebody's going to
- 30:53Speaker 3: be like, who was that dude? Who was that quarterback?
- 30:55Speaker 3: Let's see if we can get him here.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 30:57Speaker 4: And all of a sudden they drop the money. He's gone.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Which has been a longstanding theme for NIL, for us,
- 31:03Speaker 5: for these smaller schools.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 31:05Speaker 5: They can't keep the good players.
- 31:06Speaker 4: They just can't. They cannot keep the great players. They
- 31:07Speaker 4: just cannot.
- 31:08Speaker 6: But I say this, too. At State, we had one
- 31:11Speaker 6: of our top receivers. He tried to transfer out twice.
- 31:16Speaker 6: So he went to like Iowa or Idaho somewhere.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Then he came back.
- 31:19Speaker 6: Then he went to another division to spend like maybe
- 31:22Speaker 6: a summer camp there or something and ended up coming back.
- 31:25Speaker 6: And the thing is, you got to ask yourself, too,
- 31:28Speaker 6: is that you may spend a year or two at
- 31:30Speaker 6: maybe one of these programs. But are you going to
- 31:32Speaker 6: be remembered like, you.
- 31:34Speaker 4: Know, a legacy?
- 31:34Speaker 6: Yeah. Are you going to have a legacy there where
- 31:37Speaker 6: if you're a Dom Collins right now at Concord? where
- 31:40Speaker 6: you're having great games and you're part of the reason
- 31:44Speaker 6: why they can have these big wins, you're going to
- 31:46Speaker 6: have a legacy. You're going to go Hall of Fame.
- 31:49Speaker 6: You may always have a job. You may always be
- 31:51Speaker 6: part of that community in some capacity.
- 31:53Speaker 5: They will erect a statue with your name on it.
- 31:56Speaker 6: And what we see, legacy is important because it may
- 31:58Speaker 6: be a couple of dollars now, which, again, these guys
- 32:00Speaker 6: ain't going to get millions, but it may be a
- 32:02Speaker 6: couple of dollars now. But, you know, if you're able
- 32:04Speaker 6: to stay somewhere three or four years, that legacy is
- 32:07Speaker 6: going to last forever.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:09Speaker 3: I mean, you think about, you know, when you start
- 32:11Speaker 3: thinking about that and you let's just use a Randy
- 32:13Speaker 3: Moss as an example. Not that he wouldn't have been
- 32:18Speaker 3: a standout anywhere, but, you know, for Marshall to be
- 32:21Speaker 3: able to say.
- 32:23Speaker 4: Randy Moss, you know. played here and here's what he
- 32:27Speaker 4: did and all those kind of things.
- 32:30Speaker 3: I still say that that has to be a pat
- 32:34Speaker 3: on his back.
- 32:34Speaker 4: That has to be a little bit of confidence for
- 32:37Speaker 4: him inside somewhere. Like, how do you not want that?
- 32:41Speaker 5: Right, right.
- 32:42Speaker 3: You know, so your hometown– From high school to college,
- 32:46Speaker 3: you played in your hometown, and.
- 32:48Speaker 4: You were unbelievably great. You know, worldwide great. Right, right.
- 32:54Speaker 5: And it just made the fans love him even more.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Absolutely. His whole story.
- 32:58Speaker 5: Just made people love him. And then, of course, I
- 33:00Speaker 5: just want to say, you know, we kind of highlighted
- 33:03Speaker 5: on the Concord game, but, you know, what a great
- 33:05Speaker 5: feeling for West Virginia Wesleyan to get that monkey off
- 33:08Speaker 5: their back. I mean, come on, you know. They had
- 33:11Speaker 5: not won a game since October of 2022. That's three
- 33:14Speaker 5: and a half seasons. That's a long time.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Three and a half seasons.
- 33:17Speaker 5: That's a long time. So those boys, they also have
- 33:19Speaker 5: a new, do they have a new head coach? Mike,
- 33:21Speaker 5: is it Mike Keller? I don't know how long he's
- 33:23Speaker 5: been there.
- 33:24Speaker 4: I know a local guy, T.R. Dues, he's up there.
- 33:26Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:26Speaker 4: Conditioning coordinator.
- 33:28Speaker 5: So shout out to them. I just wanted to mention that,
- 33:30Speaker 5: you know, that's a, And how do you think, you know,
- 33:33Speaker 5: how does the team feel after a win like that?
- 33:36Speaker 5: Is it just a relief?
- 33:37Speaker 3: I think it's great. I think that they– I can't
- 33:39Speaker 3: even imagine how they were feeling. But it sets them
- 33:45Speaker 3: up for positive thought processes every week.
- 33:51Speaker 4: We can win this game now. You know, we don't
- 33:54Speaker 4: have to go into that game.
- 33:55Speaker 3: Because what happens, and Hollis can agree to this, teams
- 34:00Speaker 3: that lose– and have a history of losing, the moment
- 34:04Speaker 3: you go, all of a sudden the score is 7-0, 14-0,
- 34:09Speaker 3: the first thing you're thinking about, okay.
- 34:11Speaker 4: Here we go again. We're going to lose.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Now.
- 34:15Speaker 5: It's a mindset, isn't it?
- 34:17Speaker 4: It is a mindset.
- 34:19Speaker 3: It is a mindset that some players can't get over it.
- 34:24Speaker 3: And then there are some players who are just going
- 34:27Speaker 3: to keep playing. Yeah, and then Post beat them bad
- 34:30Speaker 3: last year. Post beat them, like, about 40 or 50
- 34:33Speaker 3: points last year.
- 34:33Speaker 5: Wow.
- 34:34Speaker 4: And to come out and, like I said, they had
- 34:36Speaker 4: a pretty dominant win.
- 34:37Speaker 5: Yeah, they won 31 to 13. 31 to 13.
- 34:39Speaker 4: That's a pretty dominant win.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's big.
- 34:41Speaker 4: That's dominant.
- 34:42Speaker 6: And again, you just want to start the season off right.
- 34:44Speaker 6: You want to get things on the right foot. And now,
- 34:47Speaker 6: it's one of them things, now you know you can win, right?
- 34:49Speaker 6: So now you have, like, a a script to say, okay,
- 34:53Speaker 6: we can do this after three and a half seasons,
- 34:55Speaker 6: which that is a long time not to win.
- 34:57Speaker 3: A ball game.
- 34:57Speaker 5: Yeah, oh my gosh.
- 34:58Speaker 3: And let me ask this question because I know this
- 35:02Speaker 3: always seems to happen. To your point, Hollis, about how
- 35:06Speaker 3: important it is to win, and I would even say
- 35:10Speaker 3: that it's.
- 35:12Speaker 4: Equally as important to win early. Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:17Speaker 3: But most teams that have a losing record have tough
- 35:22Speaker 3: seasons behind them, they always.
- 35:26Speaker 4: Seem to schedule a team because they're going to make money.
- 35:30Speaker 3: You know, so, you know, we went and played Marshall,
- 35:35Speaker 3: you know, with no real chance of possibly winning. But
- 35:42Speaker 3: that loss... For me as the coach, okay, Sam, we've
- 35:45Speaker 3: got some money to get help with some scholarship stuff
- 35:48Speaker 3: and all this kind of stuff.
- 35:49Speaker 4: But for the team, for the players, what is that?
- 35:53Speaker 3: I mean, that doesn't do anything for them. Right. You know,
- 35:57Speaker 3: we're not really helping them in that situation. Am I
- 36:01Speaker 3: wrong thinking that way? Because I know that's how it happens,
- 36:05Speaker 3: and I know that people are going to continue to–
- 36:07Speaker 3: coaches and teams are going to continue to do that.
- 36:10Speaker 4: But is that not a reality?
- 36:12Speaker 5: No.
- 36:12Speaker 6: I think it certainly is a reality. And I hate
- 36:15Speaker 6: the system that we have. Like, to me, it should
- 36:17Speaker 6: be revenue sharing. But, you know, that's another conversation. Because
- 36:20Speaker 6: you shouldn't be forced to play these teams just for
- 36:23Speaker 6: a check. You should play these teams when you're ready
- 36:26Speaker 6: to play these teams.
- 36:28Speaker 4: Right.
- 36:28Speaker 6: You know, you see they played Grand Valley State, which
- 36:30Speaker 6: is a perennial Division II powerhouse. We played West Florida,
- 36:34Speaker 6: which is now a Division I team. State played West
- 36:37Speaker 6: Florida last year, which is now a Division I team.
- 36:39Speaker 6: So you want to, like, play those teams when you think, okay,
- 36:42Speaker 6: I got some guys. We're ready to test those waters. So,
- 36:48Speaker 6: you know, I would like to see sort of an
- 36:50Speaker 6: all college football revenue sharing system where we can, you know,
- 36:53Speaker 6: divvy out some of those funds so we don't have
- 36:55Speaker 6: to do this.
- 36:55Speaker 5: But hasn't that been going on for years, though? I mean, really,
- 36:58Speaker 5: even before NIL. I mean, that was just, that's the
- 37:00Speaker 5: way it usually happens. The bigger schools.
- 37:02Speaker 4: Contract the smaller.
- 37:04Speaker 5: It's almost like a scrimmage for them.
- 37:07Speaker 4: Yes. And you're 100% right that.
- 37:10Speaker 3: But I think what's new is the reality of how
- 37:15Speaker 3: much money is in college football or college sports as
- 37:19Speaker 3: a whole. All of a sudden now people understand when
- 37:23Speaker 3: you're paying a player, you know, $ 300, 000 or $ 400, 000 to play,
- 37:25Speaker 3: what could you– like what could you do– financially, you know,
- 37:36Speaker 3: to make your team more notable or whatever the situation is.
- 37:42Speaker 6: I mean, it just doesn't make any sense to me.
- 37:44Speaker 6: And you want to have Division II teams play each other.
- 37:47Speaker 6: So you want to have the, you know, because it's
- 37:49Speaker 6: a bunch of parity even within that. So they can
- 37:51Speaker 6: play each other and, you know, you don't have to
- 37:52Speaker 6: do all this stuff.
- 37:54Speaker 5: Well, all right. Let's move on. We'll get back to
- 37:56Speaker 5: coaching styles. How's that? Really quick. And then if we
- 37:59Speaker 5: have time, we'll hit on some things. I know Hollis
- 38:02Speaker 5: has a subject he wants to talk about in NFL.
- 38:05Speaker 5: So let's just talk about coaching. Which sport, I'm going
- 38:09Speaker 5: to ask you guys this question to open, which sport
- 38:11Speaker 5: would you pick as the most challenging to be a
- 38:14Speaker 5: head coach and why?
- 38:17Speaker 4: I'm going to say football. I'm going to say football.
- 38:20Speaker 5: Wait a minute. You threw me a curveball here.
- 38:24Speaker 3: I'm going to say football because one, you got 11
- 38:26Speaker 3: guys out there and you've got you got you got kickoff, kickoff, return, punt, punt, return.
- 38:32Speaker 3: You got all these different places where you got to
- 38:35Speaker 3: put the quote the best players out there. But, okay,
- 38:39Speaker 3: so on punt team, I don't want all my really, like,
- 38:42Speaker 3: I can't put my best players out there, but I
- 38:45Speaker 3: want to be able to at least get down and
- 38:47Speaker 3: make the tackle.
- 38:48Speaker 4: So you say.
- 38:50Speaker 3: I'm going to say football just because of all the
- 38:52Speaker 3: different scenarios that come up.
- 38:55Speaker 6: I say at the college level. I'm going to say
- 38:57Speaker 6: football before a different reason. But just to mention basketball,
- 39:00Speaker 6: I think what's increasingly difficult about basketball now is that
- 39:04Speaker 6: everybody's– your top players are one and done, so you're
- 39:06Speaker 6: not keeping those kids more than maybe two years. And basketball,
- 39:10Speaker 6: you have to recruit internationally now. So now you've got to, like, globetrot,
- 39:14Speaker 6: go all over the world to find talent. So that
- 39:17Speaker 6: becomes difficult because you're not just looking in your backyard.
- 39:19Speaker 6: You just can't go to this tournament. You may have
- 39:21Speaker 6: to send coaches to Europe, Africa, Asia, Canada, wherever, right?
- 39:25Speaker 6: But I think the thing with football, particularly at a
- 39:27Speaker 6: collegiate level, is that it's immense pressure because you are...
- 39:33Speaker 6: The pressure's on the head football coach to carry the
- 39:36Speaker 6: athletic department.
- 39:37Speaker 4: Yeah. You know what I mean?
- 39:39Speaker 6: So, like, in normal situations, if you don't... Like, if
- 39:43Speaker 6: you were at Michigan and you fumble, you know, you
- 39:46Speaker 6: make a bunch of coaching mistakes... and you drop revenue
- 39:50Speaker 6: over a course of years, then that can affect the
- 39:52Speaker 6: whole athletic department. They were talking about, I heard something
- 39:55Speaker 6: with the Wisconsin coach. Wisconsin, you know, football has always
- 39:59Speaker 6: kind of been middle of the road. They kind of
- 40:01Speaker 6: always been teetering 10 wins. They always getting big bowl games,
- 40:04Speaker 6: known for having big athletic, you know, offense alignment and
- 40:07Speaker 6: running backs, right? Well, you had the Cincinnati coach. He
- 40:10Speaker 6: gets the job. Now he wants to change to an
- 40:11Speaker 6: air raid offense where he's You don't have the personnel.
- 40:14Speaker 6: That's not the personnel in your backyard. So now he
- 40:17Speaker 6: just messed it all up. They're three and four wins.
- 40:21Speaker 6: So now that affects the economy of the university. You
- 40:25Speaker 6: know what I'm saying? If you're not having the ticket sales,
- 40:27Speaker 6: people are not coming to the game. So you don't
- 40:28Speaker 6: even hear about Wisconsin football where they would have Heisman
- 40:31Speaker 6: Trophy winners or at least be in a conversation, running
- 40:33Speaker 6: backs every year, first-round offensive linemen every year. It's not
- 40:37Speaker 6: been that way over the past four or five seasons.
- 40:39Speaker 6: So I would say because you have that pressure on,
- 40:41Speaker 6: particularly at the college football level, that's the hardest job.
- 40:45Speaker 4: Basketball. Football. Football. Football.
- 40:48Speaker 5: And then basketball second, right?
- 40:49Speaker 6: Basketball just because you have to recruit internationally now. And
- 40:52Speaker 6: you don't have stabilization within the program to keep guys
- 40:55Speaker 6: more than a year or two.
- 40:57Speaker 5: I say all of them. I can't pick one. I
- 41:00Speaker 5: think now in the day and age of the transfer
- 41:02Speaker 5: portal and the NIL– the things that those head coaches
- 41:06Speaker 5: have to deal with compared to what they dealt with
- 41:08Speaker 5: even 10, 15 years ago is phenomenal change.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Imagine, just imagine, to your point, Lisa, just imagine like, okay,
- 41:17Speaker 3: so I've got Hollis, and I already know he's a
- 41:21Speaker 3: great player.
- 41:22Speaker 4: Let's say he's a freshman.
- 41:24Speaker 3: Maybe I didn't start him right out of the beginning
- 41:26Speaker 3: of the season, but I'm going to get him in, say,
- 41:29Speaker 3: after three or four games. He gets in, does exactly
- 41:32Speaker 3: what I thought he could do. Now, the problem I
- 41:35Speaker 3: have is I got two issues. Can I get the
- 41:40Speaker 3: money to pay him?
- 41:41Speaker 4: Because he's going to be asking.
- 41:42Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 41:44Speaker 3: Because if I can't, what's my chances of keeping him?
- 41:48Speaker 3: And so now I recruit him, he comes in, he
- 41:52Speaker 3: likes everything about what came with it. And then the
- 41:56Speaker 3: moment that he becomes this notable person.
- 41:59Speaker 5: He hits the road.
- 42:01Speaker 3: He's got to hit the road. And I'd like to
- 42:04Speaker 3: be able to say that's not right for him to
- 42:06Speaker 3: do that. He should be more loyal than that. That's
- 42:09Speaker 3: not the way it is. That's not the way.
- 42:10Speaker 5: It's just not the mentality.
- 42:12Speaker 4: No, it's not. And I can't control what his background is,
- 42:15Speaker 4: why he wants the money. You just can't– you can't
- 42:20Speaker 4: do that.
- 42:20Speaker 5: And the deeper we go into this and the further
- 42:22Speaker 5: we go, we get away from the old days of,
- 42:25Speaker 5: you know, players staying their full eligibility at a school,
- 42:30Speaker 5: the more normalized it is. So, you know, it's not
- 42:33Speaker 5: going to be a thing that people expect legacies or
- 42:37Speaker 5: players to stay. I mean, it's not– People won't look
- 42:41Speaker 5: at it disrespectful. Right. They'll say that's just part of it.
- 42:43Speaker 5: That's just, you know, in fact, we're almost there now.
- 42:46Speaker 4: Are we not there? I was going to say, are
- 42:48Speaker 4: we not there?
- 42:49Speaker 5: I think some of the old school, like college, like
- 42:51Speaker 5: Hollis has mentioned on here before that, you know, he's
- 42:53Speaker 5: not as big of a fan of college football because
- 42:56Speaker 5: of those reasons. Because we can't, we don't have continuity.
- 42:59Speaker 5: You know, there's not the rivalries playing anymore. It's all
- 43:02Speaker 5: about the money. And, you know, you don't know the
- 43:05Speaker 5: names of the players on the field half the time,
- 43:08Speaker 5: you know, even at your alma mater. So I think
- 43:11Speaker 5: this is kind of the last of the generations that
- 43:14Speaker 5: understood the old ways of college football. And the further
- 43:18Speaker 5: we get away from us and the more this generation
- 43:21Speaker 5: comes up, it just won't be a thing that people
- 43:24Speaker 5: think about twice.
- 43:25Speaker 3: So let me ask this question. To your point, if
- 43:30Speaker 3: this is not taking or changing thoughts or not about
- 43:36Speaker 3: changing how this is going– let's say in the next
- 43:40Speaker 3: three to four years, if it's not corrected, not capped,
- 43:46Speaker 3: is it over? I mean, is it over really for
- 43:49Speaker 3: the reality of sports?
- 43:52Speaker 6: Nah, they're changing it. So it's like this is not
- 43:54Speaker 6: going to be sustainable. So I think with what Nick
- 43:58Speaker 6: Samp is trying to do at the federal level, they
- 44:01Speaker 6: already got like the five-year implementation in. So I think
- 44:05Speaker 6: slowly but surely, They're going to right this ship. It's
- 44:08Speaker 6: never going to go back to what it was. But
- 44:10Speaker 6: I think after they get the players stable as far
- 44:12Speaker 6: as just saying, like, oh, you got five years now.
- 44:15Speaker 6: You can only transfer maybe twice now. So I think
- 44:18Speaker 6: they're going to correct it. And then I think the
- 44:20Speaker 6: next thing they're going to work on is conference just
- 44:22Speaker 6: to make it. Because I think at this point, you
- 44:24Speaker 6: probably just get rid of conferences and just make it regional.
- 44:27Speaker 6: and they'll expand it to 24 playoff teams. So I
- 44:30Speaker 6: think they're going to figure out a way to correct
- 44:32Speaker 6: it because it's just, frankly, too much money at stake.
- 44:34Speaker 4: I mean, when you.
- 44:35Speaker 5: Have– Some of those conferences, though, they'll hang on, right?
- 44:38Speaker 5: Like SEC, that's their identity. They will not let that go.
- 44:41Speaker 6: Again, SEC's kind of done it right because they are regional.
- 44:44Speaker 6: So it's not really outside of their region. So I
- 44:47Speaker 6: think they'll have semblance of that. But it's like when
- 44:49Speaker 6: you look at what happened to, like, USC this weekend,
- 44:52Speaker 6: they're at the Rose Bowl, and they had, like, 5,000
- 44:55Speaker 6: people there. Opening weekend at USC. 5,000 people at USC.
- 45:02Speaker 6: I mean, if you watch the game, the stands were empty.
- 45:05Speaker 6: They tried to say it was a quote-unquote sellout, but
- 45:08Speaker 6: we all know that was a big old fib. So
- 45:10Speaker 6: it's like you can't have that because now if you
- 45:12Speaker 6: take a market like that where I'm not vested as
- 45:15Speaker 6: a fan, you may not play UCLA or you may
- 45:19Speaker 6: not play those teams within the region. That hurts everything.
- 45:23Speaker 6: So I think it's going to get corrected. In my opinion.
- 45:26Speaker 5: So the last question I have for you guys with
- 45:29Speaker 5: our coaching theme tonight is, and Hollis, you better be
- 45:33Speaker 5: careful how you answer this question. Who was the most
- 45:36Speaker 5: challenging coach you played for and why?
- 45:39Speaker 6: I mean, I would say probably, I would say my
- 45:43Speaker 6: high school coach, he wasn't like the head coach, he
- 45:45Speaker 6: was old man Edwards. So it was Steve Edwards Sr.
- 45:49Speaker 6: But just because he was gruff. I mean, this was
- 45:53Speaker 6: in the 90s and he was, like from the 70s.
- 45:56Speaker 6: So you can imagine sort of how he would talk
- 46:00Speaker 6: and phrase things to you.
- 46:02Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
- 46:02Speaker 6: So it was like one of those things where you
- 46:04Speaker 6: had to really, really like be in control of your
- 46:07Speaker 6: emotions because the way he would express himself to you,
- 46:10Speaker 6: it was not nice. But it was ultimately good because
- 46:13Speaker 6: you learned to take that criticism.
- 46:16Speaker 5: I hope he's not listening.
- 46:17Speaker 4: No, he's since passed on.
- 46:19Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:20Speaker 5: Okay.
- 46:21Speaker 6: His son, Steve Edward Jr., is the current coach of GW.
- 46:24Speaker 6: He was the head coach, and his dad was the
- 46:25Speaker 6: offensive coordinator.
- 46:26Speaker 5: So it was his dad you played for.
- 46:27Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:27Speaker 6: So his dad was the offensive coordinator. Steve Edward Jr.
- 46:30Speaker 6: was the head coach at the time.
- 46:32Speaker 4: Okay.
- 46:33Speaker 6: He was just, I mean, he was gruff, but he
- 46:34Speaker 6: was kind of one of those typical, stereotypical gruff on
- 46:39Speaker 6: one hand, but, like, love you hard on the other hand.
- 46:41Speaker 4: So it was like that. And to that, I can
- 46:46Speaker 4: totally respect that because....
- 46:48Speaker 3: Because the dad was back in the day when it was,
- 46:55Speaker 3: you know, I mean, you could say anything. I mean, like,
- 46:58Speaker 3: you know, anything could come out of your mouth as
- 47:01Speaker 3: a coach talking to a player back in the day.
- 47:04Speaker 3: The whole grabbing you by the face mask, all those
- 47:06Speaker 3: kinds of things, those were norms.
- 47:12Speaker 4: And so hearing the words that you would hear from
- 47:16Speaker 4: a coach saying, The hands-on with the coach, them putting
- 47:22Speaker 4: their hands on you, it was an acceptable thing.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 47:25Speaker 4: As a player, as a parent, you were okay with it.
- 47:28Speaker 5: As a technique?
- 47:29Speaker 3: Yeah. It's just, it was, I'm trying to get Hollis
- 47:31Speaker 3: to be the best player that he can be, so
- 47:34Speaker 3: I need to get him as close to me when
- 47:36Speaker 3: I'm talking to him.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 47:38Speaker 4: And telling him what he did wrong. And I think.
- 47:42Speaker 3: Do I think that that was okay? I don't, but
- 47:47Speaker 3: I will say this. I think it.
- 47:49Speaker 4: Built some amazing, it built amazing men.
- 47:53Speaker 5: It wouldn't fly today, that's for sure.
- 47:54Speaker 3: No, it would not fly today, but I think it
- 47:56Speaker 3: really had a lot to do with a lot of
- 47:59Speaker 3: young men.
- 48:01Speaker 4: Becoming great men. I really do.
- 48:04Speaker 3: I think when I look back at Sonny Randall and,
- 48:07Speaker 3: you know, grabbing your face mask, cussing you out, all
- 48:10Speaker 3: of those kinds of things, like, I can't even imagine
- 48:13Speaker 3: myself even accepting that in my mind right now.
- 48:17Speaker 4: Right, right. But if I had to do that all
- 48:20Speaker 4: over again, I would absolutely do it.
- 48:23Speaker 3: And I would take every cuss out, every grab face mask,
- 48:26Speaker 3: every morning run because you didn't do something. I would
- 48:30Speaker 3: take it all because it made me who I was,
- 48:33Speaker 3: who I am. Right.
- 48:35Speaker 5: Those coaches were the challenging ones are the ones that
- 48:38Speaker 5: make you who you are.
- 48:40Speaker 3: I definitely think so. I think that that's how you change.
- 48:43Speaker 3: That's how you become the person that you are now.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Not taking anything away from the coaches today and what
- 48:51Speaker 3: they're trying to do because they're trying to do this
- 48:53Speaker 3: exact same thing. I just don't know if some of
- 48:57Speaker 3: the kids sometimes– if they don't have that pressure, they
- 49:02Speaker 3: don't have that push, they don't have that hard-nosed coach,
- 49:08Speaker 3: you just don't know, you know, the discipline, where it
- 49:12Speaker 3: may go.
- 49:12Speaker 6: And I also think, like, from just a practical standpoint,
- 49:16Speaker 6: I mean, obviously, like, if you got issues at home,
- 49:19Speaker 6: that's complicated. kind of like a village raising a child, right?
- 49:23Speaker 4: Takes a village. Yeah, you have that.
- 49:25Speaker 6: Sort of manhood that is sort of, because I think
- 49:29Speaker 6: what happens is, is that you learn how to take
- 49:31Speaker 6: constructive criticism in a direct manner. Forget the cussing and
- 49:35Speaker 6: the yelling, but you learn how to take the criticism directly. Like,
- 49:39Speaker 6: you don't have to, like, somebody doesn't have to talk
- 49:41Speaker 6: to you in third person or talk to you around
- 49:43Speaker 6: the situation. You really learn how to take it. And
- 49:46Speaker 6: I think, to me, unfortunately, that's kind of been a
- 49:49Speaker 6: lost art because, you know, a lot of kids are
- 49:53Speaker 6: emotional and they just can't take a direct criticism, whether
- 49:55Speaker 6: it's yell, cuss, or not. And I think what's happened
- 49:58Speaker 6: kind of has been inverted. I think women in sports
- 50:01Speaker 6: now get that more than the boys.
- 50:03Speaker 5: You're right.
- 50:03Speaker 6: I think women can take it a lot more because
- 50:05Speaker 6: if you look at, like, you know, the past some
- 50:07Speaker 6: of the Geno's and the Don Staley's and those coaches
- 50:10Speaker 6: who we know now, those aren't, those are kind people,
- 50:13Speaker 6: but they aren't nice people.
- 50:14Speaker 5: They're not touchy-feely.
- 50:14Speaker 4: They aren't touchy-feely.
- 50:15Speaker 6: So, you know, a lot of women, women athletes are
- 50:18Speaker 6: getting that. And I think that's, you know, so I
- 50:20Speaker 6: think it's important that we, you know, we got to
- 50:22Speaker 6: figure out a way back to that.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Do you think we can, do you think we can
- 50:26Speaker 3: get back? Do you think there's a way back? that
- 50:29Speaker 3: you can get to a parent or parents or a
- 50:32Speaker 3: community that.
- 50:33Speaker 6: Not in this culture, unfortunately. I mean, I've seen like
- 50:37Speaker 6: several incidents where coaches and parents fighting. I don't know
- 50:40Speaker 6: if you've seen some of those things on social media
- 50:42Speaker 6: this weekend. This happened this weekend. So I think it's
- 50:45Speaker 6: going to be hard to get back to that, you know,
- 50:47Speaker 6: with the culture.
- 50:49Speaker 4: And I see it in you sports, you know.
- 50:52Speaker 3: If I get on, not me necessarily, but a coach
- 50:54Speaker 3: gets on one of the kids, parents are not.
- 50:57Speaker 4: They're touchy.
- 50:58Speaker 6: They're really, yeah, they're really like. And I think the
- 51:01Speaker 6: thing is our parents dropped us off. Like our parents
- 51:03Speaker 6: didn't stay.
- 51:04Speaker 4: No, no. They got dropped. Like we got dropped off
- 51:06Speaker 4: and we got maybe picked up.
- 51:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 51:08Speaker 4: Maybe he walked off. You could come home and tell
- 51:11Speaker 4: what happened in practice.
- 51:12Speaker 5: Right home with your buddy. Yeah.
- 51:13Speaker 4: And they ain't want to hear that. No. What did you,
- 51:16Speaker 4: my dad's first question is, what did you do? Yeah.
- 51:20Speaker 4: For sure. That was the famous question.
- 51:23Speaker 3: And I just– I really do believe that we need
- 51:25Speaker 3: to get back to that because I think that's the
- 51:29Speaker 3: way– that's coaching. And not– I don't mean all the
- 51:33Speaker 3: cussing and all that kind of stuff, but you got
- 51:35Speaker 3: to be able to be hard because you are the parent.
- 51:38Speaker 3: You know, in that situation, you are the parent. But
- 51:42Speaker 3: anything else, anybody, before we get out of here?
- 51:45Speaker 5: I think we'll have to touch on the NFL next show.
- 51:49Speaker 4: Well, just quickly, I mean, you got Aaron Donald. He
- 51:52Speaker 4: came out of retirement. Right?
- 51:54Speaker 2: Yep.
- 51:54Speaker 6: He came out of retirement. He's with Miles Garrett on
- 51:57Speaker 6: the defensive line and the Rams.
- 51:59Speaker 4: I don't know. They might go undefeated. I might be
- 52:01Speaker 4: shaking in my boots. Like, are you kidding me?
- 52:05Speaker 2: Scary.
- 52:06Speaker 4: Are you kidding me?
- 52:06Speaker 5: They're scary.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Scary.
- 52:07Speaker 6: And then, you know, your Browns, they kept all four quarterbacks.
- 52:12Speaker 6: They literally kept all four quarterbacks on the active roster.
- 52:15Speaker 5: Keep on browning.
- 52:16Speaker 3: So let me just touch on that one. So if
- 52:20Speaker 3: I'm four, Well, I might be getting a paycheck. But
- 52:26Speaker 3: the paycheck only lasts for a while because sooner or
- 52:29Speaker 3: later you actually do.
- 52:30Speaker 4: Want to play. I don't know.
- 52:32Speaker 3: Maybe you don't. Well, I shouldn't say that for today's game.
- 52:35Speaker 3: I shouldn't say that for today's game. But there's no way.
- 52:38Speaker 3: I'm going to be third, and we got four corners,
- 52:42Speaker 3: and I'm third, and I'm not getting a shot in
- 52:44Speaker 3: the game.
- 52:44Speaker 4: That's like having eight corners.
- 52:45Speaker 2: I mean– That might apply for all the other teams
- 52:49Speaker 2: in the NFL, but this is Cleveland.
- 52:51Speaker 4: Just a friendly reminder. Number four is not bad in Cleveland.
- 52:57Speaker 4: You got a chance to play. You got a chance.
- 52:59Speaker 4: You got a chance. You're right about that.
- 53:01Speaker 5: So you're saying there's a chance.
- 53:02Speaker 4: That is the fact. By week six, you're in, buddy.
- 53:05Speaker 6: And if I'm like the DB coach or I'm the
- 53:08Speaker 6: linebacker coach, I'm like, dang, I could have had maybe
- 53:10Speaker 6: another spot.
- 53:10Speaker 4: Exactly. You just going to keep off for these guys?
- 53:13Speaker 3: There's no way. Because somebody took a hit. Some positions
- 53:18Speaker 3: took a hit.
- 53:20Speaker 5: And the Dolphins better be worried. I'm telling you what.
- 53:22Speaker 5: The Rams are scary loaded, and they might go undefeated.
- 53:27Speaker 5: I am telling you right now. Look at their schedule.
- 53:29Speaker 5: Look at what's on their team. That roster is putting
- 53:34Speaker 5: everybody on notice. I'm telling you.
- 53:36Speaker 4: I never want a team to go undefeated.
- 53:38Speaker 5: I don't either. I'm just saying the Dolphins better watch.
- 53:40Speaker 6: I just don't know how you're going to, like, because
- 53:42Speaker 6: you're going to have to double one of those guys
- 53:44Speaker 6: on every single play. I'm going four deep on all
- 53:47Speaker 6: defensive line. I mean, they might have 50, 60 sacks
- 53:51Speaker 6: this season. Yeah.
- 53:52Speaker 3: All right.
- 53:53Speaker 4: Well, we got to get out of here, ladies and gentlemen.
- 53:55Speaker 4: We thank you, and we will be back again next week.
- 54:22Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 55:17Speaker 5: Thank you. Thank you.
