Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Ascent of the Consciousness Beyond the Preoccupation With Material Existence

- 0:00It is difficult to both understand and appreciate the
- 0:04apparent regression from spiritual heights to a world in
- 0:08which the physical being and material focus reigns supreme
- 0:13and predominates in the entire world to an overwhelming degree.
- 0:18It is likely that the intellectual and then the
- 0:21spiritual development reached a point where it was too rarefied
- 0:26and the generality of mankind was unable to adopt it,
- 0:30particularly as they struggled to survive and thrive in
- 0:33difficult external circumstances.
- 0:37We can thus accept that a period of focus on the external, the
- 0:41physical, the material, was needed to provide a foundation
- 0:45or basis upon which the next ascent of consciousness could
- 0:50develop, hopefully in a way that ensured that the physical and
- 0:54vital being of man would be able to both participate and
- 0:59appreciate the next stage of development.
- 1:04In the Titiria Upanishad, the seeker first establishes the
- 1:08foundation of the physical level before eventually moving on to
- 1:12appreciate the priority and primacy of the vital, the
- 1:17mental, the supermental, and the bliss planes of existence that
- 1:22make up the various levels of the creation.
- 1:26In the modern day, we see scientists delving deep into
- 1:30matter and discovering that it is really energy, and then
- 1:34proceeding to discover that energy is a form of
- 1:38consciousness. So we see a preparation for the
- 1:42renewal of the upward ascent of the evolution of consciousness.
- 1:46Now with an understanding of the roots of matter and the oneness
- 1:51of the entire creation, Shrioro Bindo provides a note of
- 1:57confidence that the material focus of the current age will
- 2:00eventually recede as a new spiritual aspiration and urge
- 2:05awakens and takes up the challenge of the ever evolving
- 2:10conscious existence that is manifesting in the world in the
- 2:16life Divine, he writes. Quote the earliest preoccupation
- 2:22of man in his awakened thoughts, and, as it seems, his inevitable
- 2:28and ultimate preoccupation, for it survives the longest periods
- 2:33of scepticism and returns after every banishment, is also the
- 2:38highest which his thought can envisage.
- 2:42It manifests itself in the divination of Godhead, the
- 2:46impulse towards perfection, the search after pure truth and
- 2:50unmixed bliss, the sense of a secret immortality.
- 2:56The ancient dawns of human knowledge have left us their
- 2:59witness to this constant aspiration.
- 3:03Today we see a humanity satiated but not satisfied by victorious
- 3:09analysis of the externalities of nature, preparing to return to
- 3:14its primeval longings. The earliest formula of wisdom
- 3:19promised us to be its last God. Light, freedom, immortality.
- 3:28End Quote. The Mother notes quote.
- 3:33When I read these ancient texts, I really have the impression
- 3:37that from the inner point of view, from the point of view of
- 3:40the true life, we have fallen back terribly.
- 3:45And that for the acquisition of a few ingenious mechanisms, a
- 3:49few encouragements to physical laziness, the acquisition of
- 3:54instruments and gadgets that lessen the effort of living, we
- 3:58have renounced the reality of the inner life.
- 4:02It is that sense which has been lost, and it needs an effort for
- 4:06you to think of learning the meaning of life, the purpose of
- 4:10existence, the goal towards which we must advance, towards
- 4:15which all life advances, whether you want it or not.
- 4:19One step towards the goal. Oh, it needs so much effort to
- 4:23do that. And generally one thinks of it
- 4:26only when the outer circumstances are not pleasant.
- 4:31How far we are from the times when the shepherd who did not go
- 4:35to school and kept watch over his flock at night under the
- 4:39stars, could read in the stars what was going to happen.
- 4:44Commune with something which expressed itself through nature
- 4:48and had the sense of the profound beauty and that peace
- 4:52which a simple life gives. It is very unfortunate that one
- 4:58has to give up something in order to gain another.
- 5:01When I speak of the inner life, I am far from opposing any
- 5:05modern inventions. Far from it.
- 5:08But how much these inventions have made us artificial and
- 5:12stupid, how much we have lost the sense of true beauty, how
- 5:17much we burden ourselves with useless needs?
- 5:21Perhaps the time has come to continue the ascent in the curve
- 5:25of the spiral. And now, with all that this
- 5:28knowledge of matter has brought us, we shall be able to give to
- 5:32our spiritual progress a more solid basis, strong with what we
- 5:37have learnt of the secrets of material nature.
- 5:40We shall be able to join the two extremes and rediscover the
- 5:45Supreme Reality in the very heart of the atom.
