- 0:04Speaker 1: Weary way losing a kid. You can hit me with
- 0:47Speaker 1: a vance right, put your wind. This is the haunt.
- 0:53Speaker 2: What are you gonna do? Tackle in the desert? Spider
- 0:57Speaker 2: Man Brand New Day, Red thirteen July thirty first Well,
- 1:00Speaker 2: welcome to the Projection Booth. Time your host Mike White
- 1:01Speaker 2: joined me for a special crossover episode with the culture
- 1:05Speaker 2: cast is mister Chris Statue.
- 1:07Speaker 1: The letter of the day is M for Mutagia.
- 1:12Speaker 2: We are digging into Spider Man Brand New Day, the
- 1:16Speaker 2: new Tom Holland MCU film that just came out and
- 1:19Speaker 2: borrows its title and a chunk of its DNA from
- 1:22Speaker 2: the classic Peter Parker Mary Jane Reset comic era, along
- 1:26Speaker 2: with the elements of the other storyline, Chris. Before we
- 1:30Speaker 2: get into what this movie is and into some spoiler territory,
- 1:34Speaker 2: I want to know, is this movie worth the bucks?
- 1:38Speaker 1: So? I feel like you and I, according to some
- 1:42Speaker 1: people in your reviews, tend to drag new movie, which
- 1:46Speaker 1: I find to be amusing because I don't think that
- 1:50Speaker 1: big budget, one hundred million dollar movies need fans defending them.
- 1:54Speaker 1: If they're not good, they're not good. They don't need
- 1:57Speaker 1: your defense. If you like the movie, cool just because
- 2:00Speaker 1: I didn't enjoy the movie doesn't devalue your ability to
- 2:03Speaker 1: enjoy the movie. Just want to put this out there
- 2:05Speaker 1: because again, like it doesn't seem to be anything with
- 2:07Speaker 1: the older movies we watch or the non modern films especially,
- 2:12Speaker 1: but new things, people tend to get bent out of shape.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And it was funny because we were getting taken a
- 2:16Speaker 1: task what Supergirl and Deadpool and Wolverine. And I would
- 2:20Speaker 1: wager someone coming into this podcast, Michael, well, they're going
- 2:23Speaker 1: to have disliked the Spider Man movie, except not. I
- 2:26Speaker 1: actually don't dislike every new movie I go see. I
- 2:28Speaker 1: enjoyed this movie a fair amount. Is it worth going
- 2:31Speaker 1: to see in theaters? I would think so. I think
- 2:33Speaker 1: it is a worthy entry into a Spider Man franchise
- 2:39Speaker 1: that is on its fourth film now as opposed to
- 2:43Speaker 1: its third. And this feels like a fourth film in
- 2:46Speaker 1: that it kind of resets some things, branches out in
- 2:49Speaker 1: some new directions, does some things that Spider Man movies
- 2:52Speaker 1: have never done before, and I think for me, in
- 2:56Speaker 1: a lot of ways, it's Look, I don't know how
- 2:59Speaker 1: you feel about last Spider Man movie because we didn't
- 3:02Speaker 1: talk about it together. I don't think but I was
- 3:05Speaker 1: not the biggest fan of the last Spider Man movie
- 3:07Speaker 1: for the same reason I wasn't the biggest fan of
- 3:09Speaker 1: Deadpool Wolverine. It was just a bunch of cameos, like
- 3:12Speaker 1: it was a bunch of fan service, which is fine
- 3:14Speaker 1: for the first time you watch it, But has anyone
- 3:17Speaker 1: gone back and rewatched those movies like more than maybe once?
- 3:20Speaker 1: Deadpool Wolverine doesn't hold up. And the best part of
- 3:23Speaker 1: that Spider Man movie is Willem Dafoe genuinely, which is
- 3:27Speaker 1: not surprising given that he was the best part of
- 3:29Speaker 1: the original Spider Man movies he was in. So the
- 3:31Speaker 1: fact that this movie doesn't rely on any of that,
- 3:33Speaker 1: doesn't rely on any multiverse nonsense, it doesn't have any
- 3:36Speaker 1: of that. This is a and I've seen this this
- 3:39Speaker 1: kind of review mentioned, or this kind of point mentioned
- 3:41Speaker 1: several times in other reviews. It's a more grounded Spider Man,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and I think it is. This is this is the
- 3:47Speaker 1: Spider Man that I grew up with in the comics
- 3:49Speaker 1: in a lot of ways, like he's just out of
- 3:52Speaker 1: high school. He's a young adult ish still kind of
- 3:56Speaker 1: doing ground level Spider Man work. And then there's more
- 3:59Speaker 1: inrigue beyond that, so I enjoyed it a fair amount.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I would say it was worth it. I don't know
- 4:06Speaker 1: if Marvel is going to be two for two this
- 4:08Speaker 1: year with films, because obviously we have Doomsday coming out
- 4:11Speaker 1: at the end of the year, which you and I
- 4:12Speaker 1: will cover. But I think so far this year they're
- 4:14Speaker 1: one for two or one for one, I guess, because
- 4:17Speaker 1: again I can't speak to the other one yet. But
- 4:19Speaker 1: one for one, this movie's great. I've seen some reviewers
- 4:22Speaker 1: say it's as good as Spider Man two. I don't
- 4:25Speaker 1: hold Spider Man two in as high regard as everybody else.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I think, for me, this might be the best Tom
- 4:30Speaker 1: Holland Spider Man movie. I definitely think it's better than
- 4:33Speaker 1: the last one. The Jake Jillenhall one is pretty good.
- 4:37Speaker 1: The first one, I think is predicated on some things
- 4:40Speaker 1: like not knowing that Michael Keaton is her dad throughout
- 4:43Speaker 1: most of the movie is kind of like part and
- 4:45Speaker 1: parcel to what really makes that movie work. So for me,
- 4:49Speaker 1: I think this is the first Tom Holland Spider Man
- 4:51Speaker 1: movie that I'm like, Okay, we have escaped the old
- 4:55Speaker 1: Spider Man storytelling. We've escaped the Spider Man of two thousand,
- 5:00Speaker 1: twenty tens, and this Spider Man is firmly now his
- 5:04Speaker 1: own thing. And there are moments in this movie that
- 5:08Speaker 1: we have not seen with Spider Man before. There are
- 5:10Speaker 1: things in this movie that again are so unique and
- 5:13Speaker 1: novel and fun and interesting that for me, I would say,
- 5:16Speaker 1: not only is it a worthy film to watch in theaters,
- 5:20Speaker 1: but I think that this is the now the best
- 5:23Speaker 1: Spider Man movie that we have gotten in the cinematic
- 5:26Speaker 1: spider Man era, which would have started with Raymie spider Man.
- 5:29Speaker 2: So what about you, Mike, Well, I'm curious you said
- 5:32Speaker 2: that this film does some things that no other Spider
- 5:34Speaker 2: Man movie has done, and I'm curious what you were
- 5:36Speaker 2: thinking of for that.
- 5:37Speaker 1: All of the mutant stuff, like actual mutant stuff anything
- 5:41Speaker 1: with I mean, again, I don't want to spoil that
- 5:43Speaker 1: stuff because I think that's like the main spoiler of
- 5:46Speaker 1: the movie. Uh, But I mean, we've seen the We've
- 5:49Speaker 1: seen Spider Man as a organic spider in the movies,
- 5:54Speaker 1: but we've never seen it where he doesn't start out
- 5:57Speaker 1: that way as Spider Man, but he's still Spider Man
- 5:59Speaker 1: and he becomes that we've never seen. That's a comic
- 6:03Speaker 1: book thing. We've never seen that in the movie, and
- 6:04Speaker 1: so I guess I was more speaking to having not
- 6:07Speaker 1: seen it in the movies, not so much the comics,
- 6:09Speaker 1: because most of this is just a millunge of things
- 6:12Speaker 1: from the comics kind of worked into a script that
- 6:14Speaker 1: works better than I would have expected, because again, to
- 6:17Speaker 1: go back to forcing a bunch of villains into a
- 6:19Speaker 1: movie Spider Man three, both the Toby Maguire one and
- 6:24Speaker 1: the Tom Holland one both had a lot of villains,
- 6:27Speaker 1: like replete, an abundance, a plethora, even a villain, and
- 6:32Speaker 1: this one has a lot of villains as well, but
- 6:35Speaker 1: I think it definitely kind of manages them in a
- 6:38Speaker 1: way that makes sense, and the through line I think
- 6:40Speaker 1: with Jean Gray also makes sense.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I feel that he has more friends than enemies in this.
- 6:46Speaker 1: One, right, which is weird. Yes, Yeah, we really manned
- 6:50Speaker 1: Spider Man situation almost where he's interacting with the cops,
- 6:53Speaker 1: which we have not really seen. We saw that sort
- 6:56Speaker 1: of with Dennis Leary's character sort of. But the less
- 6:59Speaker 1: I think about those Andrew Garfield Spider Man movies, the better. Personally.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to think of what his relationship with
- 7:04Speaker 2: the Cops was in the previous films. It feels like
- 7:06Speaker 2: it was more dealing with high school than anything else,
- 7:10Speaker 2: and you know, the school trip and all that, and
- 7:13Speaker 2: the second film, the trip down to Washington, d C.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I think that was in the first film, and then
- 7:19Speaker 2: with the last one, I really don't remember any cops.
- 7:22Speaker 2: It was so much about the whole let's reset the
- 7:25Speaker 2: universe type of thing, and I feel like the Spider
- 7:28Speaker 2: Man films have not necessarily suffered because of the rest
- 7:32Speaker 2: of the MCU. I mean, we've got our introduction to
- 7:35Speaker 2: Tom Holland via one of the bigger MCU via one
- 7:40Speaker 2: of the Avengers films, that Civil War that we got was.
- 7:44Speaker 1: That was Captain America Civil War, which is technically not
- 7:46Speaker 1: an Avengers movie, but it's half of an Avengers movie.
- 7:50Speaker 2: It so feels like a Reorders.
- 7:51Speaker 1: An Avengers movie. I mean, in a lot of ways.
- 7:54Speaker 1: For me, it's as much an Avengers movie as Ultron is.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I guess it's just like the Stakes. I guess it's
- 7:59Speaker 1: the they're not world ending steaks in Civil War in Asia,
- 8:03Speaker 1: Ultron their world ending steaks. So I guess that's kind
- 8:05Speaker 1: of the line of demarcation. I would agree the Spider
- 8:09Speaker 1: Man movies have suffered because he's had to be part
- 8:12Speaker 1: of the grander MCU framework. The picture work that is,
- 8:16Speaker 1: the MCU relies a lot on Spider Man, which, again,
- 8:19Speaker 1: Spider Man was a singular entity up until this point.
- 8:22Speaker 1: He was in his own movies, doing his own thing.
- 8:24Speaker 1: There was no crossovers, there was no you know, the
- 8:26Speaker 1: most we ever saw was Venom. That was it. Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 2: But in the comics, I mean, he was very interactive
- 8:31Speaker 2: with other people. That was the thing I always enjoyed
- 8:34Speaker 2: was that he had his little area of New York,
- 8:38Speaker 2: mostly queens that he would deal with. You had, you know,
- 8:41Speaker 2: Daredevil over in Hell's Kitchens. Like everybody had their own turf, right,
- 8:45Speaker 2: you know, like fantastical for yeah, exactly. So you had
- 8:49Speaker 2: all of these people that had their own area, and
- 8:53Speaker 2: he would team up with them occasionally. I mean, I remember,
- 8:56Speaker 2: especially when he got the Symbiote suit that he broken
- 9:00Speaker 2: to the Baxter building, which was great that he could
- 9:03Speaker 2: just bypass their securities pretty easily in order to have
- 9:07Speaker 2: read Richards help him with this whole problem that he
- 9:10Speaker 2: was having with the you know, waking up and he'd
- 9:13Speaker 2: still be tired. He didn't know that the symbiote was
- 9:16Speaker 2: controlling him, taking him out for a ride at night,
- 9:18Speaker 2: those kind of things. So I always enjoyed when he
- 9:21Speaker 2: would do team ups, especially with the Human Torch. I
- 9:25Speaker 2: like that he he doesn't team up with anybody really
- 9:28Speaker 2: other than the Punisher, which I haven't watched any of
- 9:32Speaker 2: these Punisher TV shows, the mini series whatever they're doing,
- 9:36Speaker 2: that weirdo movie thing that they did last time with
- 9:39Speaker 2: that yeah one shot with that really bad special effect
- 9:42Speaker 2: that was making the rounds out on Weddit.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And Marvel's glad that that's all we know about that
- 9:47Speaker 1: Punisher thing if you haven't watched it is John Burnhal
- 9:50Speaker 1: falling backwards off of a roof and it looking like
- 9:52Speaker 1: a video game.
- 9:54Speaker 2: But I thought that the relationship between him and Frank
- 9:58Speaker 2: was fantastic, and especially I love the parallel now that
- 10:03Speaker 2: Spider Man is forcing himself to be alone. He doesn't
- 10:06Speaker 2: want to be alone, but he has to be alone,
- 10:08Speaker 2: and there's that whole thing. I think it was at
- 10:11Speaker 2: the end of the first Spider Man movie, the Raimy one.
- 10:14Speaker 2: I can't remember if it was the first or second,
- 10:15Speaker 2: where he's basically like, I'm putting all my loved ones
- 10:18Speaker 2: in jeopardy, I have to stop this here. In that
- 10:21Speaker 2: third movie, he really was like, no, no, I have
- 10:24Speaker 2: to make sure that nobody knows who the hell that
- 10:26Speaker 2: I am, and thus wiped everything. But yet he's so
- 10:30Speaker 2: desperate for any sort of friendship that he's now friends
- 10:35Speaker 2: with Punisher. I love that moment at the beginning where
- 10:38Speaker 2: there's the girl who recognized him, Oh, we live on
- 10:41Speaker 2: the same floor. He's like, well, not anymore, and he
- 10:43Speaker 2: moves up to the basically like the attic and creates
- 10:47Speaker 2: his own lab up there. There's no mention of iron
- 10:49Speaker 2: Man in this film, which I kind of like because
- 10:53Speaker 2: there were moments, especially in the first Spider Man film,
- 10:56Speaker 2: where it was in danger of becoming an Ironman film
- 10:59Speaker 2: because Robert Downey Junior's personality is so big and the
- 11:03Speaker 2: Ironman character was so big. It's like Spider Man doesn't
- 11:07Speaker 2: need him, but he did need that tech. I like
- 11:09Speaker 2: that he's got the tech in this one, that he's
- 11:11Speaker 2: kind of proven himself that he can do all of
- 11:14Speaker 2: these things on his own. He's got ev instead of
- 11:17Speaker 2: you know, needing Friday or anything like that. I really
- 11:20Speaker 2: like that he's in this position now of you know
- 11:24Speaker 2: you're talking about how this is the Spider Man that
- 11:26Speaker 2: you're familiar with. This is also the Spider Man I'm
- 11:28Speaker 2: familiar with. The Only thing that's missing from this is
- 11:31Speaker 2: taking photos for the Daily Planet, right, And I kind
- 11:33Speaker 2: of appreciate that that's not in this. It was actually
- 11:36Speaker 2: better that he doesn't need to worry about that job
- 11:40Speaker 2: at this moment. Like I don't know how he's making
- 11:42Speaker 2: his money. It's not pizza time, but you know, he
- 11:45Speaker 2: seems to be doing okay right now.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I think for me, you know, they and this was
- 11:50Speaker 1: kind of the thing right with the end of that
- 11:52Speaker 1: second movie where they're like, my god, look it's JK.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Simmons again, which by the way, never has come back
- 12:00Speaker 1: like since I guess.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I thought it was the third one.
- 12:03Speaker 1: No, No, I'm not talking about I'm talking about in this.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Film, oh right, which I was kind of glad for.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Right, which which I think to my point, like I
- 12:11Speaker 1: think now it would be a little unbelievable to have
- 12:14Speaker 1: Spider Man Oregon Peter Parker going and taking pictures of
- 12:18Speaker 1: Spider Man people bele like you're Spider Man, like knock
- 12:20Speaker 1: it off, like it's it would be hard, I guess
- 12:22Speaker 1: in this version of the MCU, because everyone in the
- 12:25Speaker 1: MCU and genuinely a lot of moments in this movie.
- 12:28Speaker 1: There's a lot of moments in this movie that have
- 12:29Speaker 1: to do with Spider Man's secret identity being found out
- 12:33Speaker 1: or Spider Man's secret identity being in danger. And I
- 12:37Speaker 1: like that, Like you said, we don't have something that's
- 12:39Speaker 1: forcing us to suspend disbelief every time we deal with it,
- 12:43Speaker 1: which is I work for He's my friend. Like, okay,
- 12:46Speaker 1: why is in every villain in the city just going
- 12:48Speaker 1: after Peter Parker? Then, like again, that's to go back
- 12:51Speaker 1: to this. You know why the stories of Spider Man
- 12:54Speaker 1: have been the way that they are. They've had to
- 12:56Speaker 1: ret con everybody knowing that Peter Parker was Spider Man
- 13:00Speaker 1: multiple times. And I mean here the movie is doing
- 13:03Speaker 1: that as well, because they kind of backed themselves into
- 13:05Speaker 1: a corner with that second movie, and then in the
- 13:08Speaker 1: third movie they did this, you know, complete forget with
- 13:11Speaker 1: Doctor Strange. I think they actually nailed it in the
- 13:14Speaker 1: landing here because this is kind of the landing as
- 13:17Speaker 1: it were from that third movie, from the fallout of
- 13:18Speaker 1: the third movie. I think it works. I like that,
- 13:21Speaker 1: like you said, we have Spider Man as is as
- 13:24Speaker 1: he has ever been his own agent with nobody else
- 13:27Speaker 1: other than maybe the Punisher and the Woman from the Bear,
- 13:31Speaker 1: which I loved by the way. I was just like, oh, so,
- 13:34Speaker 1: now we have Spider Man kind of interfacing with the
- 13:37Speaker 1: cops in kind of an interesting novel way. It's not
- 13:40Speaker 1: like a Jim Gordon Batman. It's more of a it's
- 13:42Speaker 1: more like some of the things I've seen in other
- 13:44Speaker 1: Spider Man entertainment, like Spider Man video games or stuff
- 13:48Speaker 1: where he's kind of working no pun intended symbiotically with
- 13:51Speaker 1: the cops to you know, help them out where you know,
- 13:54Speaker 1: they can't really deal with a giant tank parading through
- 13:58Speaker 1: New York City, but Spider Man might be.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Right right, which is a great way again to introduce
- 14:03Speaker 2: the Punisher into this. And I really was very happy
- 14:06Speaker 2: when it came to I don't really want to call
- 14:09Speaker 2: her Black Widow, even though they're calling her black Widow
- 14:12Speaker 2: in this Yelena now of the Thunderbolt slash New Avengers,
- 14:18Speaker 2: and I was so afraid it was going to turn
- 14:20Speaker 2: into Thunderbolts too for a minute, but I like that
- 14:24Speaker 2: she just is there to help with a little bit
- 14:26Speaker 2: of information. You know, this movie feels very much like
- 14:30Speaker 2: a detective story, which I think I really appreciate this
- 14:33Speaker 2: whole idea of what is going on. We introduced that
- 14:36Speaker 2: mystery of this tank being driven by this old lady
- 14:41Speaker 2: very early on in this I mean we've got the
- 14:43Speaker 2: opening montage. Yeah, like I think we first see the
- 14:47Speaker 2: tank at like eight thirty something like that. I don't know,
- 14:50Speaker 2: but it depends on if you include the Marvel logo
- 14:54Speaker 2: at the beginning. By the way, I came late to
- 14:57Speaker 2: this movie. I for whatever reason, thought that this started
- 15:00Speaker 2: at one thirty, but it started at one. But thank goodness,
- 15:03Speaker 2: my theater, which didn't used to have a long pre show,
- 15:06Speaker 2: now has a very long pre show.
- 15:08Speaker 1: You have about to say, it's double the length.
- 15:11Speaker 2: So I missed the first five minutes, but thank goodness,
- 15:14Speaker 2: there's already a right, yes, yes, so twenty five minutes
- 15:18Speaker 2: a pre show. So I didn't see any trailers, none
- 15:22Speaker 2: of the commercials, nothing, So I'm kind of happy about that.
- 15:27Speaker 2: So I walked in when the tank was already rolling
- 15:30Speaker 2: down the street.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So so what you're saying is you missed the nonsensical
- 15:35Speaker 1: preview for doomsday that has no bearing on anything and
- 15:39Speaker 1: has not gotten me excited for it. Okay, cool, well good,
- 15:42Speaker 1: because I think that was the best. That's the best
- 15:44Speaker 1: way to go into this movie is not being reminded
- 15:46Speaker 1: that there are other Marvel things that are possibly not
- 15:50Speaker 1: going to be good, because I for all of the
- 15:52Speaker 1: success of the MCU, can we take a step back
- 15:55Speaker 1: here and just have a conversation about what these movies
- 15:59Speaker 1: would have looked like Without that, they would have looked
- 16:02Speaker 1: like this. They would have looked like this movie where
- 16:04Speaker 1: it's just we get to see the characters because Marvel
- 16:06Speaker 1: owns them, but not everything has to be dialed into
- 16:11Speaker 1: the grand mythology that is the MCU. Part of me, now,
- 16:15Speaker 1: with the success that Marvel has not been having, wishes
- 16:18Speaker 1: that they maybe hadn't gotten so far so quickly with
- 16:21Speaker 1: the MCU and flamed out as much as they had,
- 16:24Speaker 1: because this Spider Man movie is really a like return
- 16:28Speaker 1: to form of a kind of superhero movie that we
- 16:30Speaker 1: haven't had in a while. I mean, you think about
- 16:32Speaker 1: the last MCU movies we've had, They've all been like
- 16:35Speaker 1: directly dialed into the main mythos of this kind of
- 16:39Speaker 1: multiverse story arc. This movie has none of that like
- 16:41Speaker 1: you said, with Black Widow and Punisher, like they're there,
- 16:45Speaker 1: but they're not there to the point where it distracts
- 16:47Speaker 1: from Spider Man. This is a Spider Man movie, and
- 16:51Speaker 1: I you know, I know the last one had like
- 16:52Speaker 1: four Spider Man it or three, but this one is
- 16:55Speaker 1: so much more a Spider Man movie because I feel like,
- 16:57Speaker 1: for the first time, it captures the tone of just
- 17:00Speaker 1: he's just a kid. He has these powers, and he
- 17:03Speaker 1: doesn't even necessarily understand the powers, especially in this movie
- 17:06Speaker 1: because we're getting the Man Spider story, but we get
- 17:09Speaker 1: to actually see Spider Man just kind of dealing with
- 17:11Speaker 1: what it's like to be a superhero in a world
- 17:14Speaker 1: where the superheroes don't just have a meeting place to
- 17:17Speaker 1: go hang out at. Yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I mean, we don't even see Avenger's Tower in this
- 17:22Speaker 2: which I was pretty grateful for.
- 17:25Speaker 1: It's so contained. Like you, if you hadn't seen some
- 17:28Speaker 1: of the other MCU movies, you would not know other
- 17:31Speaker 1: than like certain lines that they drop in this movie
- 17:33Speaker 1: that there was a bigger world out there, like Hulk
- 17:37Speaker 1: and Black Widow and Punisher, like we understand that they've
- 17:41Speaker 1: existed within this framework. This is not the first time
- 17:43Speaker 1: they're being introduced, and I think even if you're just
- 17:46Speaker 1: coming to this movie as someone who's never seen an
- 17:48Speaker 1: MCU movie, I think you'd be able to understand what
- 17:51Speaker 1: had happened to this point in some of their relations.
- 17:53Speaker 1: But at the same time, because Spider Man is an
- 17:55Speaker 1: unknown quantity as Peter Parker but only known as Spider Man,
- 17:59Speaker 1: they have an interesting kind of concede that they can
- 18:01Speaker 1: play with here to get away with that they wouldn't otherwise.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Like if we didn't have that, we'd have to be oh,
- 18:07Speaker 1: doctor Banner once again from like the eight million times.
- 18:09Speaker 1: It's like, I don't need any of that. Like genuinely,
- 18:13Speaker 1: I'm I'm so glad that this is such a singular
- 18:16Speaker 1: Spider Man movie. In the way that they've presented.
- 18:18Speaker 2: It feels like this movie is comfortable in its own skin.
- 18:21Speaker 2: It doesn't feel beholden to so many things. I mean,
- 18:25Speaker 2: even with cam Urberfi was the last movie or the
- 18:27Speaker 2: movie before. I think it was the second one where
- 18:31Speaker 2: they were talking about the blip a lot. That was
- 18:33Speaker 2: the last one, okay, and but they also they had
- 18:37Speaker 2: like I think it was either the first or second
- 18:39Speaker 2: one with the Captain America stuff or it was second one. Okay, Yeah,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I didn't go back and rewatch all of these. Instead,
- 18:45Speaker 2: for whatever reason, I ended up rewatching The Fantastic four
- 18:49Speaker 2: First Steps Yesterday.
- 18:50Speaker 1: It's a good movie.
- 18:51Speaker 2: It is a good movie and better than I remembered
- 18:53Speaker 2: it actually, so, And I think it was just the
- 18:56Speaker 2: idea of setting us up for them coming into the
- 19:00Speaker 2: rest of the MCU, which was you know that also
- 19:05Speaker 2: ties into Thunderbolts with them watching the footage at the end.
- 19:08Speaker 2: So I was trying to refresh my wife a little
- 19:10Speaker 2: bit about that stuff and just like, Okay, this is
- 19:12Speaker 2: where we're at with things. And once I started to
- 19:15Speaker 2: get into the j Jonah Jamison stuff, she was just like, Okay,
- 19:18Speaker 2: enough enough. I was like, well, and I was. I
- 19:20Speaker 2: was glad because he didn't show up in here, and.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I was just like, I don't even know how they
- 19:24Speaker 1: would explain that anymore, Like I guess they could. I mean, honestly,
- 19:28Speaker 1: now would have been the way to do it, because
- 19:30Speaker 1: Ja Jonah Jamison wouldn't know who he is, so he
- 19:32Speaker 1: just be like that that pesky spider man whatever. Yeah,
- 19:37Speaker 1: But honestly, I, you know, doctor Pearlmutter and I on
- 19:40Speaker 1: my show Who You have not had the pleasure working
- 19:43Speaker 1: with yet. We often talk about choices that you make
- 19:45Speaker 1: when you're when you're making a film, but also the
- 19:47Speaker 1: choices that they don't make and the fact that they
- 19:49Speaker 1: don't lean on j Jonah Jamison, I think is impressive,
- 19:53Speaker 1: Like we don't need it. It's again, there's just like
- 19:56Speaker 1: I don't need Uncle Ben, Like I don't need Uncle
- 19:58Speaker 1: Ben at all. Like an May I think has been instrumental.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Marissa Tomey has been instrumental at really helping ground Peter
- 20:07Speaker 1: Parker and Spider Man in a like emotionally resonant way
- 20:11Speaker 1: that the other Spider Man movies kind of never I
- 20:14Speaker 1: mean that Andrew Garfield movies really never hit it. The
- 20:17Speaker 1: Toy Maguire ones a little bit. I mean, Cliff Robertson
- 20:19Speaker 1: was a pretty good Uncle Ben. But we get to
- 20:21Speaker 1: genuinely feel like this Spider Man is a human being,
- 20:24Speaker 1: and a lot of that comes from just them not
- 20:26Speaker 1: doing the things you would expect, like no Uncle Ben,
- 20:29Speaker 1: Marissa to May instead aunt May, like no j Jonah Jamison,
- 20:32Speaker 1: just the city being appreciative of Spider Man and they're
- 20:36Speaker 1: not being any kind of like wiggle Room. I mean,
- 20:39Speaker 1: I know in our day and age, if a person
- 20:41Speaker 1: like Spider Man existed, there would be all kinds of
- 20:43Speaker 1: insane conspiracy theory shit. But I like that in this movie,
- 20:47Speaker 1: it's just like the city is pulling for Spider Man collectively.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Like I like that, Like I genuinely think that for me,
- 20:53Speaker 1: that gives me an idea in a sense that the
- 20:55Speaker 1: people that are making these movies don't feel super tied
- 20:59Speaker 1: to having to do constant MCU future proofing setup bullshit.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Like this movie is just like, you know what, who
- 21:06Speaker 1: knows if in the next movie they'll just love Spider
- 21:08Speaker 1: Man as much as they do now. But in this
- 21:10Speaker 1: movie it works, I think tonally where they're coming from,
- 21:13Speaker 1: it worked absolutely.
- 21:14Speaker 2: And that was one of the things I liked about
- 21:15Speaker 2: the Ramie Spider Man was when it was Spider Man
- 21:19Speaker 2: Day and they had the woman like playing the violin
- 21:22Speaker 2: and doing the Spider Man theme and stuff. And I
- 21:25Speaker 2: always like how they will work in the Spider Man theme,
- 21:27Speaker 2: like here for ned with his app and everything, having
- 21:31Speaker 2: that as the little notification tone. I thought that was good.
- 21:34Speaker 2: But yeah, it was very nice to see the whole
- 21:36Speaker 2: city pulling for Spider Man rather than he's an outlaw.
- 21:40Speaker 2: You know, We've we got that a little bit with
- 21:43Speaker 2: the Dark Knight, you know, that that whole thing at
- 21:46Speaker 2: the end where it's like, oh no, I'll take all
- 21:48Speaker 2: the blame for everything, and he runs off into the
- 21:50Speaker 2: shadows with his big ears flapping back and forth, and
- 21:53Speaker 2: then they just fucks off. There is no outlaw Batman
- 21:56Speaker 2: that we get to see in the third movie. He
- 21:58Speaker 2: just disappears into you know, Wayne Manor and never comes
- 22:02Speaker 2: out again. He becomes I think he even makes a
- 22:05Speaker 2: joke about how Hugh Hefner right now Howard Hughes so it. Yeah,
- 22:13Speaker 2: and I think there's even a talk about keeping his
- 22:15Speaker 2: urine and jars. But here, I like that everybody knows
- 22:18Speaker 2: who he is and everybody's okay with it. Like that
- 22:21Speaker 2: he is able to, you know, walk into Yolena's apartment building.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Nobody freaks out because it's Spider Man. They just know
- 22:28Speaker 2: who he is and he's just part of the city,
- 22:31Speaker 2: you know. And I do like that relationship he has
- 22:34Speaker 2: with the cop. I think that's pretty nice. She's kind
- 22:36Speaker 2: of a surrogate mom a little bit to him. But yeah,
- 22:39Speaker 2: Aunt May is so crucial, and that that is his
- 22:44Speaker 2: core memory when are we going to get to the
- 22:46Speaker 2: spoilers with this one?
- 22:48Speaker 1: I think so yeah. I mean I think we have to. Okay,
- 22:50Speaker 1: when I think we both agree, go see this movie
- 22:52Speaker 1: in theaters. Yeah, like this is this might be if
- 22:55Speaker 1: you see, if you see only one MCU movie this
- 22:57Speaker 1: year in theaters, it's probably I would. I would lean
- 23:00Speaker 1: into it being this one. You're not going to have
- 23:02Speaker 1: a bad time.
- 23:02Speaker 2: When Jean Gray first tries to enter into his mind.
- 23:07Speaker 1: The worst kept secret in the MCU since Toby MacGuire
- 23:10Speaker 1: and Andrew Garfield being in another Spider fan movie.
- 23:13Speaker 2: I'm very glad because I had no idea. I honestly
- 23:16Speaker 2: had no idea what was happening in this movie. I
- 23:19Speaker 2: didn't watch any of the previews and none of the pershials.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Hus they spoiled it by accident. On the red carpet
- 23:26Speaker 1: last week, one of the people was like, my favorite
- 23:29Speaker 1: part of the movie is Gene, and it's like that
- 23:31Speaker 1: was the first time anyone had said anything publicly about
- 23:33Speaker 1: it up until a week ago.
- 23:35Speaker 2: So yeah, I loved that. I didn't know who the
- 23:37Speaker 2: bad guy was walking into this. I saw the hand,
- 23:40Speaker 2: the red hand or whatever, for like a brief second.
- 23:43Speaker 2: I thought I saw a Scorpion, and I really thought
- 23:45Speaker 2: Scorpion was going to be our main villain in this
- 23:48Speaker 2: movie with the way that he was introduced, which was
- 23:50Speaker 2: just bizarre. But I liked when he shows up and
- 23:54Speaker 2: I thought it was a really good suit and it's
- 23:56Speaker 2: just nice to see a classic villain like that. So
- 23:59Speaker 2: I yeah, when Gene tries to enter into his head
- 24:03Speaker 2: the first time, that's the memory that comes up, and
- 24:06Speaker 2: that's the memory that keeps going back to. And that
- 24:08Speaker 2: for me is basically the with great power comes great responsibility.
- 24:12Speaker 2: But we don't hear that in this movie. And I
- 24:15Speaker 2: was kind of glad for it. It's like we're breaking
- 24:17Speaker 2: with tradition in all the right ways.
- 24:19Speaker 1: For me, they're hinting at it, they're remixing it. I mean,
- 24:22Speaker 1: we have the Keith David kind of commentary that goes
- 24:25Speaker 1: on during that Spider documentary that Peter's watching, which, by
- 24:28Speaker 1: the way, I know, did you watch any of the
- 24:31Speaker 1: previews for this movie. You didn't watch any of the previews.
- 24:33Speaker 1: You should go back and watch some of the previews
- 24:35Speaker 1: because the way that they use the Keith David narration
- 24:38Speaker 1: is really good, Like it's really well done. It really
- 24:42Speaker 1: makes you feel like the people that are making this
- 24:44Speaker 1: movie are telling a Spider Man story like it in
- 24:47Speaker 1: the Vein of Like in the Vein of Like the
- 24:49Speaker 1: last great Spider Man story I think anyone told was
- 24:51Speaker 1: the video games, like those Spider Man video games that
- 24:53Speaker 1: have come out in PlayStation. Are the people who make
- 24:57Speaker 1: those games get it. They're able to really like you
- 24:59Speaker 1: had the whole You have a whole cadre of villains
- 25:02Speaker 1: and heroes to mess around with, but they really get
- 25:05Speaker 1: to the idea of what Spider Man, this version of
- 25:08Speaker 1: Spider Man is and what his story in this movie is,
- 25:11Speaker 1: which is finding himself again and who he is? Is
- 25:15Speaker 1: he Peter Parker? Is he Spider Man? By the end
- 25:19Speaker 1: of the movie, I love that it's I'm both and
- 25:21Speaker 1: I can be both, and I like that it's that
- 25:25Speaker 1: moment and you know what, it feels like. It feels
- 25:27Speaker 1: like the reverse I am Iron Man moment, and it
- 25:29Speaker 1: feels like this is a like brand New Day feels
- 25:32Speaker 1: more like a I would say for me, brand New
- 25:36Speaker 1: Day seems more about the MCU as a whole and
- 25:39Speaker 1: less just Spider Man, because for me, that feels like
- 25:42Speaker 1: this movie's big, like I am spider Man moment, right,
- 25:46Speaker 1: he could literally echo the I Am iron Man moment,
- 25:49Speaker 1: but instead it's I am both. And that is so
- 25:51Speaker 1: important because Tony Stark he was either Iron Man or
- 25:55Speaker 1: Tony Stark. He had a hard time being both. And
- 25:57Speaker 1: I think we kind of saw maybe by the end,
- 26:00Speaker 1: in an endgame, I mean even an endgame, he says
- 26:03Speaker 1: I am iron Man. Like that ends up being like
- 26:05Speaker 1: the whole you know, kind of ego, says Armantra, right,
- 26:08Speaker 1: Like that's who Tony Stark is, right, Like he kind
- 26:11Speaker 1: of he could have been Tony Stark at the end
- 26:12Speaker 1: of that movie, and instead it was about being iron
- 26:14Speaker 1: Man that one last time, and in him being iron
- 26:17Speaker 1: Man that one last time, he sacrifices everything. I don't
- 26:20Speaker 1: think Peter Parker wants to sacrifice everything to be Spider Man.
- 26:24Speaker 1: He wants to be both. And I like that this
- 26:26Speaker 1: movie again, it's more emotionally in tune with what I
- 26:30Speaker 1: was hoping a Spider Man movie could be than any
- 26:33Speaker 1: Spider Man movie before, genuinely, like, this is an emotionally
- 26:38Speaker 1: engaging Spider Man movie. Tell me the last time an
- 26:41Speaker 1: MCU movie was emotionally engaging. Genuinely, I don't even think
- 26:45Speaker 1: there has been maybe the Eternals, which I know will
- 26:49Speaker 1: piss a shitload of people off, but it is the truth.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I don't know for me, it's endgame. I mean I
- 26:55Speaker 2: really teared up when you hear Sam say on your
- 27:00Speaker 2: left that whole and battle. There's a lot of great
- 27:02Speaker 2: moments in there, so I was I was really into
- 27:05Speaker 2: that one, and I would have to say the previous
- 27:07Speaker 2: one with Infinity War when Thor shows up, I mean
- 27:11Speaker 2: the whole audience, including me, was cheering ourselves out, and
- 27:17Speaker 2: when Black Panther bit it, I was pretty emotional as well,
- 27:21Speaker 2: not as emotional as some of the people in the audience,
- 27:23Speaker 2: but it was really sad to see him go because
- 27:26Speaker 2: he was becoming a favorite character, you know, rip Chedwick Boseman,
- 27:30Speaker 2: But it was there were a lot of moments for
- 27:33Speaker 2: me in that in this world. I think when Aunt
- 27:37Speaker 2: may bid it in the last one, I was pretty
- 27:40Speaker 2: upset and really could hoped that that wouldn't happen. But yeah,
- 27:44Speaker 2: there are a lot of moments in this where I
- 27:46Speaker 2: was just like, oh wow, I could really feel the
- 27:48Speaker 2: heartstrings being tugged, you know, especially with all the stuff
- 27:52Speaker 2: with both Ned and MJ which was really it's I
- 27:57Speaker 2: like those characters so much, and I liked the actress
- 28:00Speaker 2: that played him so much, especially the guy that plays Ned.
- 28:03Speaker 2: He does such a great job. I don't know if
- 28:05Speaker 2: you've ever seen Reginald the Vampire, but he's the star
- 28:08Speaker 2: of that show, really good show based on a book
- 28:12Speaker 2: series called Fat Vampire. I think he plays the perfect
- 28:15Speaker 2: fat vampire. And I just love what a fan of
- 28:19Speaker 2: Spider Man he is without being a creep in this
- 28:22Speaker 2: and I love his theories on who Spider Man actually is.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I think that's the only time we see Flash. I
- 28:28Speaker 2: was afraid that Flash was her boyfriend when he showed up,
- 28:31Speaker 2: but I was quickly dissuaded. I was like, oh wait, wait, no,
- 28:34Speaker 2: that's just another guy with like longer black hair, an.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Indian, another like Indian looking actor. It was very funny
- 28:41Speaker 1: because I thought the same thing when he came on screen. No,
- 28:43Speaker 1: we only see Tony Revelori in the one like shot
- 28:46Speaker 1: with him, and I think it's like Martin Starr because
- 28:49Speaker 1: they were both from the last three movies. I mean again, like,
- 28:51Speaker 1: there's not a lot from the first three movies. There's
- 28:54Speaker 1: there's a lot from the the there's a lot of
- 28:57Speaker 1: EMCU stuff. If there's EMCU stuff, but there's not a
- 29:00Speaker 1: lot from the previous movies other than MJ and Ned,
- 29:02Speaker 1: which I liked. I genuinely thought, like good reject the
- 29:06Speaker 1: other spot. I guess there's Scorpion, but again, like Scorpion
- 29:09Speaker 1: was barely a part of those other movies anyways. Like
- 29:12Speaker 1: it's not like Scorpion was a main villain. He was
- 29:14Speaker 1: about as much of a villain in those movies as
- 29:16Speaker 1: he is in this, which is to say, like he's
- 29:18Speaker 1: being piloted by somebody else or has kind of a
- 29:21Speaker 1: different engagement with Spider Man. That's not just a direct villain,
- 29:25Speaker 1: because wasn't it in the first movie he was stealing
- 29:28Speaker 1: the control like the equipment from damage control or whatever
- 29:33Speaker 1: damage control was, or the cleanup. I thought that was Vulture,
- 29:36Speaker 1: but he was part of like vultures gear.
- 29:37Speaker 2: See oh okay, all right, right, that's.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Vulture's gear because they're all like so like it's all like,
- 29:44Speaker 1: you know, kind of chatari tech. I'm pretty sure is
- 29:47Speaker 1: what this all was originally. Yeah, And that's the thing,
- 29:50Speaker 1: like there there are things that have fed into this
- 29:53Speaker 1: movie that are deep MCU stuff. I guess when I
- 29:56Speaker 1: meant emotional things like not characters dying or like big
- 29:59Speaker 1: stand end up moments, but actually like engaging with the
- 30:02Speaker 1: character as what it means to be a superhero. And
- 30:06Speaker 1: that's not something that these MCU movies have been interested
- 30:10Speaker 1: in doing. The only time we've really seen that in
- 30:12Speaker 1: a big budget movie is those Chris Nolan Batman, and
- 30:15Speaker 1: I think this movie is in a lot of ways
- 30:18Speaker 1: what those movies could have been, which is what does
- 30:20Speaker 1: it mean for a person to give up their life
- 30:23Speaker 1: to do this? Because it's kind of hard to have
- 30:25Speaker 1: a normal life if you're doing this, And Spider Man
- 30:28Speaker 1: is now taking upon himself to see what it is
- 30:30Speaker 1: that he could do to balance those things out, because
- 30:33Speaker 1: standing on your own by yourself is clearly not a
- 30:36Speaker 1: viable option in the MCU. So I'm excited to see
- 30:40Speaker 1: where they go with it, because they seem to be
- 30:42Speaker 1: kind of getting at the fact that, like Spider Man,
- 30:45Speaker 1: any future Spider Man movie will have more of this
- 30:49Speaker 1: kind of stuff, more him engaging and interacting with other people.
- 30:52Speaker 1: It won't It'll be a Spider Man movie with other people,
- 30:56Speaker 1: not so much like Spider Man in someone else's movie. Allah,
- 30:58Speaker 1: you know, Captain America's a war because that was not
- 31:00Speaker 1: a Spider Man movie. He just you know, happened to
- 31:03Speaker 1: be in it, which still one of the smartest things
- 31:05Speaker 1: they've done was introducing him in a movie that wasn't
- 31:08Speaker 1: his own movie.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Absolutely, him jumping onto the screen after the under rus
- 31:13Speaker 2: thing was just that was.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Still pay off. It's still dang off to this day.
- 31:17Speaker 2: The audience went fucking crazy for that man. Yeah, and
- 31:22Speaker 2: I again, this is very much a detective story, him
- 31:26Speaker 2: trying to find out what's going on at damage control.
- 31:29Speaker 2: I mean he even gives a Colombo line as he's
- 31:32Speaker 2: leaving the office of the guy who's running damage control.
- 31:35Speaker 2: He literally does a one more thing and he's talking
- 31:38Speaker 2: about the whole Vmax thing, And you know, ask me
- 31:42Speaker 2: about that big vault. You know what could be behind
- 31:44Speaker 2: the door of that big vault.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I like that.
- 31:47Speaker 2: It's kind of a maguffin. I don't think there's anything
- 31:49Speaker 2: inside that vault because they get in there, but she
- 31:52Speaker 2: doesn't get what she wants. You know, there is nothing
- 31:55Speaker 2: waiting in there. When they kept talking about Vmax, I
- 31:57Speaker 2: kept thinking, oh, venom Max or something like that. I
- 32:02Speaker 2: was just like, oh God, I hope it's not the symbiote.
- 32:04Speaker 2: I really hope we're not going that way. The other
- 32:06Speaker 2: thing I was very surprised about is just the limits
- 32:09Speaker 2: of the mutation that Spider Man is undergoing. I really
- 32:14Speaker 2: thought we were going to see full fledged man Spider
- 32:17Speaker 2: by the end of this movie.
- 32:19Speaker 1: I was hoping for it. As someone who enjoyed the
- 32:22Speaker 1: cartoon in the ninety I always think of that Spider
- 32:25Speaker 1: Man toy with the spider face and the six arms,
- 32:28Speaker 1: you know, like I knew they were not gonna do it.
- 32:31Speaker 1: They did. I guess they did as close as they
- 32:33Speaker 1: were ever gonna do, right, Like, this is more like
- 32:35Speaker 1: that story. And again, this was when I was reading
- 32:38Speaker 1: the comics. I've kind of lapsed on reading comics, but
- 32:41Speaker 1: when I was well fifteen or sixteen, I guess is
- 32:44Speaker 1: when the other came out. And that's that's more what
- 32:47Speaker 1: this is is like, he doesn't turn into a man Spider,
- 32:51Speaker 1: he just becomes more like a spider. The Spider DNA
- 32:55Speaker 1: is becoming more reactive for whatever. Again mcguffin reason, let's
- 33:00Speaker 1: add Bruce Banner to this movie of it all, which
- 33:03Speaker 1: I think works. I mean, again, if if we're leaning
- 33:05Speaker 1: into now, because then again I joked about it when
- 33:08Speaker 1: we open the episode, like Emma's for Mutation, they say
- 33:10Speaker 1: it a lot. And if you didn't know X Men
- 33:13Speaker 1: were gonna be in this movie, they gave it away
- 33:15Speaker 1: like before gen Gray ever shows up, like he's like,
- 33:17Speaker 1: mutant this and mutant that, and it's my RNA and
- 33:20Speaker 1: it's my DNA and the mutation and it's like, okay.
- 33:23Speaker 1: So they're trying to can we talk about how they've
- 33:26Speaker 1: done this before, because they already did this right with
- 33:28Speaker 1: Scarlet Wit. Right, the X Men have been in the
- 33:31Speaker 1: MCU for like a decade now, but.
- 33:34Speaker 2: They had to explain it all away.
- 33:35Speaker 1: They couldn't use explaining it all the way here too,
- 33:38Speaker 1: is my point, Like they're doing the same thing that
- 33:41Speaker 1: they did with Scarlet Witch, where it's like we have
- 33:43Speaker 1: them and we're trying to figure out their powers, and
- 33:46Speaker 1: in us figuring out their powers, they are able to
- 33:49Speaker 1: better understand and then have an amplified version of their
- 33:52Speaker 1: powers afterward, which is literally what happens in this movie.
- 33:55Speaker 1: By the end of it. I don't know if Jean
- 33:57Speaker 1: Gray could do that stuff ahead of time, but by
- 33:59Speaker 1: the end to the movie, she's able to literally create
- 34:01Speaker 1: a bubble like fifty miles or something. It's like a
- 34:04Speaker 1: huge like one hundred and ten kilometers or something around her.
- 34:08Speaker 1: What she hasn't been able to do open to that point.
- 34:10Speaker 1: So it makes me think what they were doing in
- 34:12Speaker 1: this movie exacerbated that, just like with Scarlet, which being
- 34:15Speaker 1: who is she being? Was it Baron Morto not Morto?
- 34:19Speaker 3: No?
- 34:20Speaker 1: Who the hell was it? Doctor? Not doctor Claw? Right?
- 34:25Speaker 2: Yeah, but that whole thing was because of the Infinity Stones,
- 34:28Speaker 2: which didn't really make a lot of sense. I kept
- 34:30Speaker 2: wondering if they if they destroy the Infinity Stones, or
- 34:34Speaker 2: once the know skits his glove on the Infinity Stones,
- 34:38Speaker 2: wouldn't all of their powers just go away? Like wouldn't
- 34:42Speaker 2: even Captain Marvel's because you got to remember Captain Marvel
- 34:45Speaker 2: quicksilver vision, Like all these guys are being powered by
- 34:49Speaker 2: these for a time. Yeah, powered by the Infinity Stones,
- 34:53Speaker 2: which is wild that that was the way we could
- 34:55Speaker 2: explain all this stuff. Weg we couldn't even use the
- 34:57Speaker 2: word mutant. We had to use what over that stuff?
- 35:01Speaker 2: The oh gosh that it was all over well, it
- 35:05Speaker 2: was all over Agents of Shield, which tied into the
- 35:12Speaker 2: not the Eternals, the that short lived TV show that
- 35:15Speaker 2: was so bad, The Immortals.
- 35:16Speaker 1: The Immortals, the one with black Bull.
- 35:18Speaker 2: And right right, and the one with the CTGI hair.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so all in the project Kevin Feigy wishes
- 35:27Speaker 1: we didn't mention in this book.
- 35:30Speaker 2: So all that stuff was, you know, we we need
- 35:33Speaker 2: to get around mutations somehow, We need another way to
- 35:36Speaker 2: explain how people have powers. You know, it's a radioactive spider,
- 35:40Speaker 2: it's gamma radiation. That was one way of doing it
- 35:43Speaker 2: before we had the mutants. And yeah, I kind of
- 35:46Speaker 2: appreciate that we have mutations here. I appreciate too. Once
- 35:50Speaker 2: she forms that bubble around herself, it really reminded me
- 35:54Speaker 2: of the moment when Professor Rex has a freak out
- 35:56Speaker 2: and Logan and everyone is paused, you know, can't move
- 36:01Speaker 2: only like Logan, can you get through it because of
- 36:04Speaker 2: his healing mutation. I like that a lot, And.
- 36:07Speaker 1: It feels like this movie was made with that in
- 36:10Speaker 1: that future proofing in mind, because we already have how
- 36:14Speaker 1: they're going to have some of the mutants in the
- 36:17Speaker 1: MCUB because they're just gonna be reformed versions of the
- 36:22Speaker 1: X Men from the Fox Ones. Because that's how Battle
- 36:25Speaker 1: World is, right, It's just like everything gets mashed together
- 36:29Speaker 1: and then we have new versions. So there's gonna be
- 36:31Speaker 1: a new Tony Stark, is what I mean, like all
- 36:33Speaker 1: sorts of new stuff. And the new X Men are
- 36:36Speaker 1: going to be predicated on the old x Men. So
- 36:39Speaker 1: anything in this movie is already more or less we've
- 36:41Speaker 1: seen it. Like you said, in the other X Men movie,
- 36:43Speaker 1: they literally have cannon to draw from. And I'm so
- 36:47Speaker 1: glad that we are finally at this point. I'm I'm
- 36:51Speaker 1: sure everybody at Marvel is disappointed. It took fucking fourteen
- 36:55Speaker 1: years or whatever it is to this point. Eighteen years.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I guess it's eighteen.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Yeah, two thousand and eight was Iron Man, and we
- 37:02Speaker 2: had stuff before him. Obviously, we had the Spider Men films,
- 37:07Speaker 2: and I mean you go all the way, yeah, you
- 37:09Speaker 2: can go all the way back to you know, the
- 37:12Speaker 2: ground zero of like the Incredible Hulk, those kind of things.
- 37:15Speaker 2: But and I know we had crossovers with that. I mean,
- 37:19Speaker 2: Matt Murdoch was his lawyer in The Hulk and not
- 37:23Speaker 2: Hulk thor was in the Old Hulk TV show, which
- 37:28Speaker 2: was pretty embarrassing.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Well, and that's and you know again, like I don't
- 37:32Speaker 1: we don't know with Doomsday how far their net goes back,
- 37:36Speaker 1: but I hope whenever we do see more of the Mutants,
- 37:40Speaker 1: it's in this same vein that they've done with Geene
- 37:42Speaker 1: Gray in this movie, which is giving us something we've
- 37:45Speaker 1: seen before in some respects, but in a lot of
- 37:47Speaker 1: other ways, mining things that have not been mined before
- 37:51Speaker 1: in the comic books, because we've already seen certain things
- 37:54Speaker 1: in the comics represented in the movies. Like a lot
- 37:56Speaker 1: of the things that work for me in this movie
- 37:58Speaker 1: are things we've never seen in the movie before that
- 38:00Speaker 1: has never been represented in Spider Man before. Now. You
- 38:04Speaker 1: know a close friend of mine who I podcast with
- 38:07Speaker 1: from time to time, Dustin, he's a huge Spider Man
- 38:09Speaker 1: fan like you are, and you guys are about the
- 38:11Speaker 1: same age, and he was one of his complaints about
- 38:14Speaker 1: this movie was like, it's a lot of things mashed
- 38:16Speaker 1: in that are not necessarily related in the comic books.
- 38:19Speaker 1: And I know you would agree because that is the case,
- 38:22Speaker 1: like these are not necessarily all going on at the
- 38:24Speaker 1: same time in the comics. I think they make it work.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I could see, though, how one might take a little
- 38:30Speaker 1: bit of umbrage with it, because they are kind of
- 38:33Speaker 1: and they've done this with a lot of other things,
- 38:34Speaker 1: Like this is maybe the one mcuie thing that this
- 38:37Speaker 1: movie does. They're kind of clipping certain parts of the
- 38:40Speaker 1: story off to make this story smaller to fit together.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Fel good and bad. But if you like some if
- 38:47Speaker 1: certain stories resonate with you more than others, I can
- 38:50Speaker 1: see why you might be a little bit miffed that
- 38:52Speaker 1: they're cutting parts of the story out to make way
- 38:54Speaker 1: for another thing that isn't necessarily representative of the story
- 38:58Speaker 1: in the comic books. But you know, we've had this
- 39:00Speaker 1: conversation before. I think that the movies are allowed to
- 39:04Speaker 1: do whatever the hell they want, like remix and remaster
- 39:06Speaker 1: and do whatever, Like you're not beholden to anything, really,
- 39:09Speaker 1: Like I think there are some things you're beholden And
- 39:11Speaker 1: I think that's why those Snyder movies fail so horribly,
- 39:14Speaker 1: as like they don't understand the base idea of the characters.
- 39:17Speaker 1: These characters, regardless of the setting, always feel like the
- 39:21Speaker 1: characters off the page, which is the thing that the
- 39:23Speaker 1: MCU has always succeeded at, which is making a character
- 39:26Speaker 1: who is at least representative of the character from the
- 39:28Speaker 1: comic books. Maybe it's not a wonder one, but it's
- 39:31Speaker 1: it's a close amalgamation.
- 39:33Speaker 2: I one hundred percent agree. I really, the comics are
- 39:37Speaker 2: the comics and the movies are the movies, and I'm
- 39:39Speaker 2: really okay with them being completely different entities. I mean,
- 39:43Speaker 2: if I got bent out of shape when it came
- 39:46Speaker 2: to differences between the comics and the movies, I would
- 39:49Speaker 2: never be able to sleep at night. And I just
- 39:51Speaker 2: my time is more valuable than they're.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Like that though, that's true, but I need to say unfortunately,
- 39:56Speaker 1: like if you love something that much, I get it,
- 39:58Speaker 1: like I I would be hard pressed to tell you don't.
- 40:01Speaker 1: But at the same time, like you can like both separately,
- 40:05Speaker 1: like they can be loved on equal footing without their
- 40:09Speaker 1: being the overlap is the character and that's all you
- 40:11Speaker 1: need to like really say, and that's it.
- 40:13Speaker 2: I mean, just the comics themselves have been rebooted and
- 40:16Speaker 2: reset and reinterpreted so many times in the comic books
- 40:21Speaker 2: that if a movie wants to do it, as long
- 40:23Speaker 2: as you're doing it, well, I'm okay with that. I
- 40:25Speaker 2: don't care about some of the changes because you have
- 40:29Speaker 2: to make some of these changes. I mean, if I
- 40:31Speaker 2: was so bent out of shape about stuff. I mean venom,
- 40:35Speaker 2: like I already mentioned the symbio coming in from the
- 40:37Speaker 2: Secret Wars, like that was changed so quickly. I think
- 40:42Speaker 2: the first time was in the cartoon. And again the
- 40:45Speaker 2: cartoon has its own you know, history and all that stuff.
- 40:48Speaker 2: And they mentioned of the cartoon too, right, so it's like, yeah, okay,
- 40:53Speaker 2: rather than it being something from you know this uh
- 40:57Speaker 2: like a battle world with the Beyonder, No, it's j
- 41:01Speaker 2: Jonah Jamison's son is an astronaut and he brings back
- 41:04Speaker 2: this thing with him. Okay, same diff you know, and
- 41:08Speaker 2: like I've seen that in some of the movies. You know,
- 41:11Speaker 2: just it comes in different ways. I really don't care,
- 41:14Speaker 2: you know, it's it's yeah, okay, this is a different
- 41:16Speaker 2: Geen Gray, and we're seeing her sister alive and all
- 41:22Speaker 2: these kind of things, which is okay, book thing. Yeah, yeah,
- 41:25Speaker 2: I'm really okay with the way that they're doing this.
- 41:27Speaker 2: I was just so grateful that we see her at
- 41:30Speaker 2: the end on a bus and we don't see her
- 41:32Speaker 2: pulling up to Xavier's School for Gifted Children.
- 41:36Speaker 1: I was saying, there is a ranger in the north,
- 41:38Speaker 1: fight him. That's always what I think of is that
- 41:42Speaker 1: fucking scene from the end of the Hobbit. That's always
- 41:46Speaker 1: what I think of because it's just so like unnecessary.
- 41:49Speaker 1: We know where she's going now approximately possibly who knows, Frank.
- 41:55Speaker 2: We didn't need Wolverine on a motorcycle pulling up next
- 41:59Speaker 2: door or something. You know, it's it's really okay.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I will say, you know, as someone who did
- 42:05Speaker 1: know the Sadie sink of it all, uh, pretty poorly
- 42:08Speaker 1: kept secret, given that she's a redhead in the comics,
- 42:12Speaker 1: Like I don't if she's not Mary Jane. There are
- 42:15Speaker 1: a several handful of famous Marvel redheads. And if you
- 42:20Speaker 1: don't just disclose, I don't know. I feel like this
- 42:22Speaker 1: is one of these things we're just disclosed who the
- 42:24Speaker 1: fuck it was? Don't do this like back and forth bullshit,
- 42:27Speaker 1: Like I'm sick of this, Like just you know, what,
- 42:30Speaker 1: what does it have to do with the quality of
- 42:31Speaker 1: the movie? Nothing? And what you benefit from like one
- 42:34Speaker 1: day's worth of people not knowing. I don't get it.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Let's like just stop, just stop with this secret casting nonsense.
- 42:40Speaker 1: You get a lot more benefit out of surprising people
- 42:43Speaker 1: at a con than you do when they're sitting down
- 42:46Speaker 1: in the seats at the movie, like, oh my god,
- 42:48Speaker 1: a movie that's gonna have Jeene Gray and Spider Man.
- 42:50Speaker 1: And if that sounds crazy, you could have gotten a
- 42:52Speaker 1: lot out of that too. There's there's nothing to be
- 42:54Speaker 1: said that people wouldn't be as excited, if not more
- 42:57Speaker 1: excited to go see this movie knowing that Dean Gray,
- 43:00Speaker 1: an X Men character that we haven't seen in what
- 43:03Speaker 1: ten plus years, is gonna be in another Marvel movie,
- 43:07Speaker 1: which means we're gonna get more X Men. Now we
- 43:09Speaker 1: have to hide it, like stop doing the con Noonian
- 43:12Speaker 1: sing stuff. Just stop. It's just it. We're in the
- 43:15Speaker 1: Internet era. It doesn't work in professional wrestling. It doesn't
- 43:19Speaker 1: work here.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Like I'm sorry, I'm I'm so glad that I knew
- 43:23Speaker 2: nothing about it, right.
- 43:23Speaker 1: So I'm just fucking annoying at this point. Like unless
- 43:26Speaker 1: you're intentionally avoiding it, which is what you do, it's
- 43:29Speaker 1: almost damn near improp possible to not like have it ruined.
- 43:33Speaker 1: And so it's just like, well, just assume that it's
- 43:35Speaker 1: gonna be ruined. Don't assume that everybody's gonna be able
- 43:37Speaker 1: to like shut themselves out to the world. Was it
- 43:40Speaker 1: Like there's an episode of like King of Queen's where
- 43:42Speaker 1: they're all trying to watch the super Bowl and not
- 43:44Speaker 1: have it spoiled for them ahead of time or something
- 43:46Speaker 1: like that. Like it's like that, Like it's you know,
- 43:48Speaker 1: if you don't watch the movie after the first weekend,
- 43:50Speaker 1: you can't complain if it's spoiled for you if there's
- 43:52Speaker 1: something like this in it. So just don't have it
- 43:54Speaker 1: be a spoiler. Just have it be part of the movie.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Because again, like I think unlike and you know, I
- 43:59Speaker 1: think that this goes into my criticism of a dead
- 44:02Speaker 1: Pool Wolverine style movie where the whole movie is predicated
- 44:05Speaker 1: on the fucking twist and there's no substance between any
- 44:08Speaker 1: of it. This movie actually does a lot with the
- 44:11Speaker 1: fact that Jean Gray is in the movie and Sadie
- 44:14Speaker 1: Sink is really good in this movie. She's a great actress.
- 44:18Speaker 1: You know. Again, as someone who's watched a lot of
- 44:19Speaker 1: Stranger Things, I can tell you that that was like
- 44:22Speaker 1: the thing most people know her from, and towards the
- 44:25Speaker 1: latter half of the show she's not really given much
- 44:27Speaker 1: to do. But as someone who's seen her grow up
- 44:30Speaker 1: as an actress from a like preteen to now, I
- 44:34Speaker 1: guess in her twenties. Like she's a great actress, She's
- 44:36Speaker 1: a great dramatic actress. She gives the character of Jean
- 44:39Speaker 1: Gray a lot of intensity that a character like that needs,
- 44:43Speaker 1: because if we're going in the direction that I think
- 44:45Speaker 1: we are going with that character, which is a Dark
- 44:48Speaker 1: Phoenix story or a Phoenix story, you need to have
- 44:50Speaker 1: a character that can have a level of aggression that
- 44:54Speaker 1: the MCU has not seen before. It's like Scarlet Witch
- 44:57Speaker 1: on steroid.
- 44:58Speaker 2: I hope to god they don't do another Dark Phoenix
- 45:00Speaker 2: story because we've seen it so many times. I mean
- 45:02Speaker 2: I remember, right though, No, No, I mean, well the
- 45:06Speaker 2: whole thing of the alien tech and all that stuff.
- 45:09Speaker 2: I mean, we've seen the Dark Phoenix story told so
- 45:13Speaker 2: many times. I remember, like, I don't go to comic
- 45:17Speaker 2: book conventions very much at all. I think I've been
- 45:20Speaker 2: to a couple in Toronto because I was invited to
- 45:24Speaker 2: host some Q and a's Mike, Yeah exactly. And I
- 45:27Speaker 2: went to a Motor City comic con down here, maybe
- 45:33Speaker 2: maybe just the one time. And I remember hanging out
- 45:35Speaker 2: with my friend Mitch and we're going through comics and
- 45:38Speaker 2: I'm just like, oh, look, it's a Dark Phoenix story.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Oh look, it's another Dark Phoenix story. And I had
- 45:43Speaker 2: some nerdling kind of go off on me, like, you know,
- 45:46Speaker 2: they've only done that storyline twice, and I was like, no,
- 45:49Speaker 2: I think you're very wrong. And I went out to
- 45:52Speaker 2: a website that had a lot of different comic book
- 45:56Speaker 2: covers and I just found over and over and over
- 46:00Speaker 2: again all of the Dark Phoenix storylines. There were probably
- 46:03Speaker 2: twenty at least, and I'm like, kid, they've done this
- 46:06Speaker 2: to death. And so even seeing it in the movies,
- 46:09Speaker 2: I mean, that was such a major part of one
- 46:11Speaker 2: of those first X Men, and I think it was
- 46:13Speaker 2: even part of one of that whole James McAvoy world
- 46:18Speaker 2: X Men. Well yeah, I think.
- 46:20Speaker 1: God go back talk okay, talk about things I'm not
- 46:23Speaker 1: gonna rewatch in preparation for doomsday. Those movies, well, you
- 46:28Speaker 1: know what, I might just to remind myself how bad
- 46:30Speaker 1: they are, because I will say, as someone who is
- 46:33Speaker 1: a Michael Fossbender fan, he is really good as mag
- 46:36Speaker 1: He is good movies, which is I mean, to be fair,
- 46:39Speaker 1: He's like, can I just call him white Idris Elba?
- 46:42Speaker 1: He seems to be in bad movies, but he's always
- 46:44Speaker 1: good in them, which is like Idris Elba's thing as well,
- 46:46Speaker 1: like he's in bad movies all the time. He's not
- 46:49Speaker 1: the bad part. But I saw a dark tower in theater,
- 46:52Speaker 1: I have a right.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Plane Assassin's Creed, my friend.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah, there you go. Like it's It's interesting though,
- 46:59Speaker 1: because again, like the X Men, we've heard about for
- 47:02Speaker 1: years now that they're going to come into the MCU,
- 47:05Speaker 1: And what's funny is in a lot of ways, they're
- 47:07Speaker 1: just like Spider Man used to be. We heard over
- 47:10Speaker 1: and over and over again that Spider Man was going
- 47:12Speaker 1: to be in the MCU, because Spider Man didn't get
- 47:14Speaker 1: introduced into the MCU until like twenty sixteen, which is
- 47:17Speaker 1: eight years into the MCU. So the X Men are
- 47:20Speaker 1: like the next you know, it was the Fantastic Four. Again,
- 47:23Speaker 1: the Fantastic Four, I feel like, are less of a
- 47:25Speaker 1: big deal than the X Men, only because those Fantastic
- 47:28Speaker 1: Four movies didn't have the legs that X Men did.
- 47:30Speaker 1: I think those X Men movies were successful enough. They
- 47:33Speaker 1: kept making the X Men movies because those movies were successful,
- 47:36Speaker 1: not because just because they had the license like they
- 47:38Speaker 1: did with Fantastic Four. X Men. I think are so
- 47:41Speaker 1: evergreen that they knew they were going to be able
- 47:45Speaker 1: to get a lot of mileage out of a Spider
- 47:48Speaker 1: Man movie. So it was smart to put an X
- 47:50Speaker 1: Men character in here. And I think it's also smart
- 47:52Speaker 1: to put an X Men character that's not one of
- 47:54Speaker 1: the ones that you would expect. It's not a Cyclops
- 47:57Speaker 1: or a Wolverine like you said, or a Professor X
- 47:59Speaker 1: like Jean Gray, a character that, like you already said,
- 48:02Speaker 1: Dark Phoenix is a story that they have done before.
- 48:04Speaker 1: My contention is they haven't done it well. I don't
- 48:07Speaker 1: need to see them do it again. But it does
- 48:09Speaker 1: seem like we're trending in a aggression as being output
- 48:12Speaker 1: by Jean Gray. We kind of see the way it
- 48:14Speaker 1: affects Spider Man because Spider Man starts going Symbiote, which
- 48:17Speaker 1: I think is I mean, obviously there's a setup there
- 48:20Speaker 1: in that as well. There's a setup for both of
- 48:21Speaker 1: these characters as it were, to become these darker versions
- 48:24Speaker 1: of themselves. I don't need a Dark Phoenix thing, but
- 48:27Speaker 1: I do think it's smart that we have a character
- 48:29Speaker 1: that doesn't have a massive, built in iconic fan base
- 48:33Speaker 1: the way a Cyclops or a Wolverine or a Magneto
- 48:36Speaker 1: or Professor X. And I think beyond those four any
- 48:39Speaker 1: character would have been fair game. I mean, that's why
- 48:42Speaker 1: Deadpool used Colossus. That's the way I look at it,
- 48:44Speaker 1: Like you can get mileage out of lesser X Men
- 48:47Speaker 1: characters by it have them interacting with characters that are
- 48:51Speaker 1: tonally very different from themselves.
- 48:53Speaker 2: And what have we had so far? We've had Professor
- 48:55Speaker 2: X show up in the Doctor Strange movie I always
- 49:00Speaker 2: forget about. And then we had Beasts show up in
- 49:03Speaker 2: the Marvels.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Yeah, which may or may not ever have anything to
- 49:08Speaker 1: do in the field. That's the one that they've never
- 49:10Speaker 1: readdressed and I guess technically they never readdressed the Professor
- 49:13Speaker 1: X one I.
- 49:13Speaker 2: And that was nice too because we had black Bull
- 49:15Speaker 2: show up, which I think is probably gonna be one
- 49:17Speaker 2: of the few times we ever see those guys.
- 49:20Speaker 1: I mean, who knows the battle world, Uh you know,
- 49:23Speaker 1: I I don't know. I would assume so. But at
- 49:25Speaker 1: the same time, maybe they recast that character and have
- 49:28Speaker 1: somebody else play them. And it's actually a critical part
- 49:31Speaker 1: of the next part of the MCU. Who knows, Like
- 49:33Speaker 1: I would personally like to see the next part of
- 49:35Speaker 1: the MCU have nothing to do with a lot of
- 49:37Speaker 1: the characters we've already seen, Like have some characters that
- 49:40Speaker 1: allow us to be grounded in that world, but don't
- 49:42Speaker 1: give us like, oh new tone, he's dark, like I
- 49:45Speaker 1: don't cares like no no good like, but give us
- 49:48Speaker 1: a new Black Bult or a new you know somebody else.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Like I know they're gonna give us Iron Man, because
- 49:53Speaker 1: like that's I'm sure, but like there's there's a lot
- 49:55Speaker 1: of interesting room and places to go, and like having
- 49:58Speaker 1: a Geen Gray in this movie. If you had told
- 50:00Speaker 1: me they're gonna have an X Men character in a
- 50:02Speaker 1: Spider Man movie, obviously I know where my brain goes
- 50:05Speaker 1: immediately it's Wolverine, because Wolverine was a big part of
- 50:08Speaker 1: Ultimate Spider Man in the comic books. But if you're
- 50:11Speaker 1: gonna have a character that can like interact with a
- 50:14Speaker 1: Spider Man who is searching for himself and at odds
- 50:17Speaker 1: with himself, that's Geene Gray already as a character. So
- 50:20Speaker 1: to have them on this parallel course in this movie
- 50:23Speaker 1: where they intersect at the end with him and her
- 50:26Speaker 1: in his mind and her interacting with Marissa tome like
- 50:29Speaker 1: that seems really good. That's what I mean by the
- 50:32Speaker 1: emotional core of this movie is unlike any other MCU
- 50:37Speaker 1: movie I've seen that, Like, it's like it's not just
- 50:40Speaker 1: a character dying, it's a character having an internal conversation
- 50:43Speaker 1: with themselves about their place in the world and what
- 50:46Speaker 1: that means for them as a person and as a superhero.
- 50:49Speaker 1: And none of these movies have really had enough time
- 50:52Speaker 1: or slowed down enough to do that, like genuinely, And
- 50:55Speaker 1: that's kind of a shame, because if you do it,
- 50:58Speaker 1: you can actually do it pretty well. Like, there is
- 51:00Speaker 1: a lot of emotionality behind these characters in the comic books.
- 51:03Speaker 1: The people are invested in these characters not just because
- 51:06Speaker 1: they beat the shit out of villains. It's because Spider
- 51:08Speaker 1: Man is a teenager, and we were all a freak
- 51:11Speaker 1: teenager at one point. You know, Jean Gray is at
- 51:13Speaker 1: odds with herself because we all have an internal struggle
- 51:16Speaker 1: sometimes with the person we want to be in the
- 51:18Speaker 1: person we are. Like, those are things that they understand
- 51:21Speaker 1: in the comics that the MCU has always had a
- 51:24Speaker 1: joke for. There's not a cutaway to a fucking joke
- 51:27Speaker 1: in this movie, man, Like it's wild.
- 51:30Speaker 2: I was so surprised that Hal Sparks was not the
- 51:35Speaker 2: person in the elevator when he's wearing the girl's T
- 51:38Speaker 2: shirt and dants. I kind of was hoping that he
- 51:41Speaker 2: would say nice outfit.
- 51:43Speaker 1: I I wish that's the crossover we needed, Right.
- 51:48Speaker 2: Where's how Sparks when you need this guy? I'm amazed
- 51:51Speaker 2: that I can remember how Sparks's name. But I was
- 51:52Speaker 2: a big queer as folk fan.
- 51:54Speaker 1: I thought you were gonna say, you're a big fan
- 51:55Speaker 1: of I love the seventies, I love the eighties.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Oh my god, he was making money out of that.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Do you know who I feel the worst for in
- 52:05Speaker 2: this entire movie is poor Bruce banner Man's the way
- 52:09Speaker 2: they're carting him off to the hospital and they're just like, yeah,
- 52:12Speaker 2: he's gonna be in Belleville, sorry, Bellevue now, And I'm like, who.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Is sorry, folks, He'll get the help he needs. Like
- 52:19Speaker 1: that episode of The Simpsons where they're carting Homer off
- 52:22Speaker 1: and he's having the shit beating out of him. It's like,
- 52:24Speaker 1: ye know, he's gonna go somewhere that will help him. Yeah,
- 52:27Speaker 1: fucking right, the looney bin.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Like, oh boy, I felt so bad and well, that's
- 52:32Speaker 2: that's one of the things that I think they bring
- 52:35Speaker 2: up slightly and they don't necessarily mine it, maybe as
- 52:39Speaker 2: much as they can. But I'm I'm I'm both. I'm
- 52:42Speaker 2: ambivalent about it. This whole idea of the power suppression,
- 52:45Speaker 2: you know, the stuff that is wearing it.
- 52:48Speaker 1: At all, Right, this is the mutant of it all,
- 52:50Speaker 1: because now Bruce Banner is a mutant too. Technically I
- 52:53Speaker 1: guess he always was, but ish.
- 52:55Speaker 2: Yeah, ish, But this whole thing of being able to
- 52:58Speaker 2: repress somebody's powers, I mean, we saw that in Deadpool
- 53:01Speaker 2: two with those collars and the way that Deadpool was,
- 53:05Speaker 2: you know, back to being riddled with cancer because his
- 53:09Speaker 2: powers were turned off. We get a little bit of
- 53:13Speaker 2: that there, but here, I yeah, I'm glad the ball
- 53:16Speaker 2: of our trask is in this one. I have to say.
- 53:19Speaker 2: One of the scenes that really worked the best for
- 53:21Speaker 2: me was when Spider Man is having his problems and
- 53:26Speaker 2: he's trying to use that power inhibitor on himself and
- 53:30Speaker 2: he falls and there's this big explosion of webs. The
- 53:33Speaker 2: one guy comes up to him and starts talking to him,
- 53:35Speaker 2: and I'm just like, who the hell is this? And
- 53:37Speaker 2: then I realized, oh he's possessed. That scene, that guy
- 53:41Speaker 2: who plays that possessed person, I thought he did a
- 53:44Speaker 2: wonderful job. And then I really like how Jeane is
- 53:48Speaker 2: bouncing from person to person not necessarily where they you know,
- 53:52Speaker 2: fly forward and they have her spirit entering them. I'm
- 53:56Speaker 2: talking about when the people on the street start all
- 53:58Speaker 2: using her voice. I thought that was really good.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's very Elias Cotias of her very is it
- 54:05Speaker 1: that movie at the Fallen?
- 54:06Speaker 2: The Fallen? Yeah, time is on my side.
- 54:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I was waiting for her to start saying it. Man,
- 54:13Speaker 1: I mean that's what it felt like, because it's just
- 54:15Speaker 1: like that like reaction thing and they're like low Spider
- 54:18Speaker 1: Man like, it's it works really well, and I think
- 54:21Speaker 1: it's a fun power that we have not seen in
- 54:23Speaker 1: the MCU. And how do you counter that power? Like,
- 54:25Speaker 1: oh you don't like, I guess if you're Spider Man,
- 54:29Speaker 1: it's like a solidarity of the mind, like the strong
- 54:33Speaker 1: minded or able to keep Jean Gray at bay. But
- 54:37Speaker 1: if you are weak mind and of weak will like
- 54:40Speaker 1: and look you see the hand right like they are
- 54:42Speaker 1: supposed to be these like Japanese assassins that are of
- 54:45Speaker 1: you know, steely, steely mind and steel willed, and like
- 54:49Speaker 1: here they are being taken over by Jean Gray. Her
- 54:51Speaker 1: powers are I mean again, she took over the Hulk,
- 54:53Speaker 1: so you know, it's one person at the beginning, and
- 54:56Speaker 1: then it becomes like whole groups of people by the
- 54:58Speaker 1: end of the movie. So her power is just amplified
- 55:00Speaker 1: more and more. Like she she is a terrifying character.
- 55:03Speaker 2: Well and literally at this point in the movie when
- 55:06Speaker 2: she's you know, using that guy, and when Spider Man
- 55:09Speaker 2: starts to look at his own apartment and see her
- 55:13Speaker 2: and see this guy using her voice, I still don't
- 55:16Speaker 2: know who it is. So I mean, I wish that
- 55:19Speaker 2: you had had that experience that I had where I
- 55:22Speaker 2: did not know that Jean Gray was in this movie,
- 55:24Speaker 2: so I just kept wondering, who is this person who
- 55:27Speaker 2: is controlling all of this stuff?
- 55:29Speaker 1: And so that twist worked.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Oh it worked for me so well, it worked wonderfully.
- 55:34Speaker 2: And yeah, when even when he sees her in the
- 55:37Speaker 2: car and takes that picture of her, I still don't
- 55:40Speaker 2: know who that is. I'm just like, who is this girl?
- 55:42Speaker 2: Who could this be? I honestly did not know for
- 55:45Speaker 2: quite a while afterwards who that was. So I thought
- 55:49Speaker 2: that It's one of those where, like I always go
- 55:52Speaker 2: back to because I'm old, I always go back to,
- 55:55Speaker 2: what if people didn't know that Arnold Schwarzenegger was a
- 55:58Speaker 2: good guy in Termina or two? And Arnold Schwarzenegger shows
- 56:02Speaker 2: up in this movie with that box of roses and
- 56:05Speaker 2: that shotgun inside of it, and you think he's there
- 56:08Speaker 2: to kill Sarah Connor. Maybe this cop is here to
- 56:11Speaker 2: protect Sarah Connor because we don't know anything. And when
- 56:16Speaker 2: he pulls out that shotgun and turns to Eddie Furlong
- 56:20Speaker 2: and says, come with me, if you want to live,
- 56:22Speaker 2: that would have been a bring the house down reveal.
- 56:26Speaker 2: But every fucking body that saw that movie knew what
- 56:29Speaker 2: was gonna happen.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Were you seemingly the only person who win the reveal
- 56:33Speaker 1: in this movie happened? Did you react? Did anyone else
- 56:35Speaker 1: in the theater react?
- 56:37Speaker 2: Andrew reacted because she also didn't know because she doesn't
- 56:39Speaker 2: give a shit, So.
- 56:41Speaker 1: Hell yeah, what's that? Like? I wish I could be
- 56:44Speaker 1: that person? Yeah? Does me fucking matter? You're fucking right,
- 56:49Speaker 1: I mean, more or less broadly, it doesn't fucking matter,
- 56:51Speaker 1: But I care, God damn it.
- 56:52Speaker 2: I don't even know, to be honest, if she knows
- 56:54Speaker 2: who Jene Gray is, like if I said, like, oh,
- 56:57Speaker 2: that's that was the one that Famka Janssen played, and
- 57:00Speaker 2: whoever that chick from a Game of Thrones that what
- 57:04Speaker 2: played the second Jean.
- 57:05Speaker 1: Gray Sansa Stark Jesus Christ Sophie Turner had I said that,
- 57:10Speaker 1: Oh boy, I can't wait to rewatch those movies.
- 57:13Speaker 2: Mike had I said that she might have been like, oh, okay,
- 57:18Speaker 2: that's the same character. That's the one who you know
- 57:21Speaker 2: died in the first Avengers or Second Avengers, whatever that
- 57:25Speaker 2: one was. I think it was the first. Wasn't that
- 57:28Speaker 2: Jean Gray died in the first one?
- 57:30Speaker 1: She died in the second?
- 57:31Speaker 2: Does she die in the second one?
- 57:32Speaker 1: Oh? Yeah, she's the one that she's the one that's
- 57:35Speaker 1: the flood that's great from the damn yeah, that's the
- 57:38Speaker 1: second one, because the third one is she like she
- 57:41Speaker 1: to use your parlance where she gangs Professor X. Oh
- 57:44Speaker 1: yeah's exciting that movie was Oh I sure do, Yeah, Christy,
- 57:48Speaker 1: I'm the X Men movies. Man, are just you know,
- 57:51Speaker 1: we're we're on the precipice here, right and and you
- 57:54Speaker 1: you mentioned already like the hulk of it all, and
- 57:57Speaker 1: I hope to god the whole gets like a better
- 57:59Speaker 1: movie after, like after battle World happened, because they essentially said,
- 58:03Speaker 1: like there's no more Marvel movies until like battle World,
- 58:06Speaker 1: Like we get like this and like Doomsday and then
- 58:09Speaker 1: there's like scanned Marvel movies and battle World happens. Then
- 58:13Speaker 1: I think other things are happening, like the four or
- 58:15Speaker 1: fives or whatever, if there are any.
- 58:17Speaker 2: But why do you keep saying battle World?
- 58:19Speaker 1: By the way, that's the sequel to that'soomste to Avengers Doomsday.
- 58:24Speaker 1: It's not gonna be called battle World, but it's I'm
- 58:26Speaker 1: gonna be called Secret Wars. I guess like battle World
- 58:29Speaker 1: is like the thing that is going to happen at
- 58:32Speaker 1: the end of Doomsday, where like all the planets are
- 58:34Speaker 1: mashed together into one big planet. Like they've again like
- 58:38Speaker 1: they've ruined so much of this ahead of time because
- 58:40Speaker 1: they're doing these stories because they have to reboot everything,
- 58:43Speaker 1: even though they don't have to reboot everything. This is
- 58:45Speaker 1: how you don't reboot everything. Imagine if Doomsday wasn't happening
- 58:49Speaker 1: and this was just the next thing is they're introducing
- 58:51Speaker 1: X Men and that's it. Like I would have been
- 58:53Speaker 1: so much more excited because I just I have such
- 58:56Speaker 1: a real aversion to the Avenger movies after Endgame, because
- 59:00Speaker 1: like Endgame was like maybe the last good thing that
- 59:03Speaker 1: they've really done in an Avengers context. Like everything else,
- 59:06Speaker 1: all these sideways Avengers movies are halfway of Ngrews movies
- 59:09Speaker 1: have not been great.
- 59:10Speaker 2: No, no, I can agree. There's been so many. And
- 59:13Speaker 2: it was kind of surprising to see that some of
- 59:15Speaker 2: the screenwriters on this also worked on Quantumania, but I
- 59:18Speaker 2: think more importantly they worked on all of these other
- 59:21Speaker 2: Spider Man films, which it's amazing when you have you know,
- 59:27Speaker 2: I almost said Mary Jane, when you have MJ on
- 59:30Speaker 2: the roof and she's recounting like, oh yeah, night Monkey
- 59:33Speaker 2: and the thing at the Washington Monument and all this
- 59:36Speaker 2: kind of stuff, which is interesting that later on you
- 59:39Speaker 2: think about and you're like, oh, that's Geen Gray mining
- 59:41Speaker 2: all of those memories. Because I didn't realize that that
- 59:44Speaker 2: was Geen Gray for the longest time, so like later
- 59:47Speaker 2: on I was like, oh shit, she was. She got
- 59:49Speaker 2: there before Spider Man even got to MJ's apartment, right,
- 59:54Speaker 2: Like that whole thing I thought she was trapped in
- 59:57Speaker 2: the helicopter with the helicopter pilot, and I was like, oh, okay, yeah,
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: she can't jump anywhere, and not realizing that she can
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: do that whenever she wants and to whoever it is,
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: as long as they're within thirty three feet and then
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: she could just make all those jumps. I really like
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: that they make these references. I really like that Ned
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: and MJ are such a massive part of this movie.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: The moment for me that touched me the most is
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: when they It was two scenes one of Ned and
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Spider hanging out and just being friends again, and just
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: the way that Spider Man is so happy to have
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: friends one more times.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Just the way to use it right, like he made
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: the Spider Man app so if Spider Man shows up,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: he will just lose his mind and there's your end,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Spider Lace. Yeah.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: But then the handshake at the end, I fucking love that.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Oh I got chills during that.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Same It's such a it's such an earned moment, and
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: that Peter like Jesus, no, I'm with you, Like that's
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: what I mean. Like this movie. The best part of
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: the best parts of this movie are the emotional moments
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: between the characters. It's not the big action scenes. The
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: action scenes are great, but it's an MCU movie in
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: twenty twenty six. Like, I don't expect the action scenes
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: to be bad. They kind of have always been pretty
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: up to par. The thing that's nice about this movie
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: is there's an eye for the comic books. We get
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: those panel shots essentially where Spider Man is, you know,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: like recreating panels from the comic or covers from the comic.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: Oh yeah, the famous first cover with that criminal that
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: he's holding. That was so good.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: They do they do all of these things that make
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: me understand that the people that are writing these Spider
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Man movies are fans of Spider Man, not just in
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: a surface level way, they actually understand the character, because
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: this feels like a Spider Man comic book in movie form.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: And that's because Spider Man is an emotionally driven character.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: It is about his relationships with MJ and Aunt May
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: and obviously, I mean, we've never seen it in these movies,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: but you know, Harry Osborne, though we get ned as
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: his best friend in this movie, or you know, again,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: we saw him with Tony Stark in the other movies
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: as kind of the I guess the stand in for
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Uncle Ben in a lot of ways, but this is
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: the first one where I genuinely feel like Spider Man
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: is an emotionally grounded and real character. And it took
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: three movies to get to this point, and they've kind
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: of snowballed to this point because he's Tom Holland is
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: so good. I think like he's the best Spider Man
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: like at this point, and I think that this movie
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: cements it, like he went four for four. None of
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: the movies struggle because of him at all, Like he's
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: and ends and Da also fantastic. Not an actress I've
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: seen in a lot of things up to this point.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: I've seen her in several things, but I saw her
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: in the drama earlier this year. She was also great
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: in that. But Tom Holland and her and Jacob Battelon,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: the guy who plays Ned, are so good, just that
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: the chemistry that they have. They feel like friends because
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: I think they are friends in real life. And obviously
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Tom Holland and Is and Die are marriage, so you
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: know also that. But Tom Holland is able to really
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: be charismatic with anybody he's on screen with, and that
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Spider Man like Spider Man is PG Deadpool in a
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: lot of ways. He's not as meta as Deadpool, but
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: he is cracking jokes and like, you know, he is stretching.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: At one point, he's like, I'm not a teenager anymore,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: Like great, Like this is what I want from Spider Man.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: They're nailing it, Like yeah, Toby Theguire got that, Andrew
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Garfield got that too, but this just this feels so
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: much more earned because I really empathize with the character
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: underneath the mask more than I ever have before.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: I completely agree. Yeah when he I can't even remember
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: what the one liner is, when he pulls the piano
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: at Scorpions.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Hits us out on a high note.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, there are so many good things and yeah,
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: the whole stretching thing, I was like, this is really good.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: I like this, this is great. And that's what I
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: loved about Spider Man was what a smart ass he
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: was when he put on the suit. You know, when
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: he's Peter Parker's endearing, nice, endearing, endearing, he's kind of quiet,
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: kind of shop but then when he puts on that mask,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: he just it's balls out and he's been that way,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: you know, for forever you know. And that's the thing
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: when you get good writing and you get him being
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: able to make those quips, you know, even just the
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: stuff of him arguing with Frank Castle and and that
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: whole thing of like yo, I say.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Queens, yes anything, I'm not so good at all.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: For the most part, I really liked him in this,
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: and like I said, it almost makes me want to
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: go back and watch The Punisher. Not quite, but.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: You got made two thirds of the way there, maybe,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Like I don't even think you're half this. This movie
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: I think is the best he's been The Punisher.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: I liked him in the account movies, both of them,
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: and I'm trying to remember. I think he was in
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: that one with Oh gosh, who's the guy that played
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Freddi or Mercury Rammy Malik The Amateur He I think
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: he was in that as well, and he was really
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: good in The Amateur. So yeah, I like him as
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: a supporting character. I don't know if I like him
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: as the main lead of stuff, but maybe when the
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: days I'll give it a shot.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Well, and you know, we have the issue with a
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Punisher style character where he is an R rated character,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: so they can also, I think make that work we've
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: seen now that you can have Deadpool in these movies
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: you could. I think Punisher shows that that's a thing
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: that you could get away with if you have the
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: right people writing it and the right people directing it.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: I mean, again, like those are big ifs, but I
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: think they can be done because that was again a
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: thing that we know, Like there's a possibility that Deadpool
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: is part of the MCU. Know, I think he obviously
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: will be. But the Punisher, I think is a good
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: test case to see, like you can have a character
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: that uses guns and kills people and the things that
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: he is doing being a rejected by the superhero broad
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: because Spider Man's like, you can't just go around killing people.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: It's like, I'm gonna do whatever the hell I want. Like, Okay,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: they can be at odds with each other, put work together.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: And I like that this movie shows that because I
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: think the MCU has been too narrow in a lot
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: of what it's been doing, and I think that this
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: movie shows like you can actually tell a smaller story
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: that has bigger implications on the Grand or MCU without
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: the entire city of New York or the world being
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: under threat. Yes, the entire world is technically under threat,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: but not really like I don't know, like yes and
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: no and yes. I think that's what's interesting. This movie
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: threads that needle very very well, because it does feel
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: like a grand threat, but it feels like much smaller scale,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: even even in the climax of the movie with Jean Gray, like,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: it doesn't. It's not a giant blue light pointing to
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: the sky, you know what I mean?
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: No, thank goodness.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: At the same time, though, like it does have the
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: implication of that being the cave, it's.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Going to be a lot easier to clean up. I
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: think we're not going to need damage to control to
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: come in, even though there were some car wrecks, but
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: it's not going to be as big of a deal
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: as the big blue skylazer and the Chitari showing up again.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: I was glad that we have that little joke of
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: the partners sure about to swear and Spidey shoots the
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: web over his mouth. That's very comic book to me.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: I also like that it's the punisher that is the
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: one that ends up kind of breaking the spell but
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: also fucking it up and shooting Spider Man at the end,
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: Like It's like guns aren't always the answer, but they are,
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: but they aren't, you know, just the way that he
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: manages to have Jean stop with that moment, the way
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: that Spider Man saves her and sacrifices himself. And I
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: really like that stupid moment where the Punisher puts on
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Spidey's mask and is dancing around like an idiot up
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: in the hospital room and Spider Man gets to go
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: out amongst the people as Peter Parker and see the
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: love that he gets, which up until this point in
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: all of these Spider Man movies, I don't I know,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: we had like Spider Man Day and like one of
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: the I think it was the first Spider Man film.
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: I don't think it was in the third one. But
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: like you know, we've seen some celebrations, but this to
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: see all of those people pulling for him, and him
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: amongst the crowd, that little kid that makes eye contact
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: with him and does the web shooter fingers, it all
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: just hit perfect for me.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: I agree. I think that getting a genuine, like emotional
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: moment out of the Punisher, one of the more gruff
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: characters in the MCU, is really smart because you pair
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: him opposite Tom Holland as Spider Man. And you know what,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: I think there's always been this question like who is
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: the analogue in Marvel for Superman in the DC universe.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: I would make the argument at Spider Man, we have
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: a character who when he's not superpowered, is just trying
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: to live a normal life, which both Clark Kent and
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Peter Parker are trying to do. And then when they
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: are their superpowered versions of themselves, they are adored by
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: the city that they live in. And you know, obviously
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: Superman the whole world in a lot of those comics
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: where he's saving the world, but you know, in the
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: comic book of Spider Man like he's you know, friendly
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: neighborhood spider Man, like he's adored by the city he is.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: You know, they give him the key to the city.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: I love that, And you know, I think that this
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: movie cements Spider Man as that character in terms of
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: like the ability to bridge the gap between what the
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: MCU was and what the MCU I hope is moving forward,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: which is character stories about characters that actually have some
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: emotional resonance to him. We saw it with Thunderbolts. There
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: was a whole the whole climax of that movie took
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: place inside of a character's mind. We saw it a
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: little bit in The Fantastic Four. The whole movie is
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: kind of about four people learning to be a family together,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: and what does that mean? Like, I think we might
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: actually be trending in a direction with the MCU that
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: is hopeful in terms of maybe not just being Joss
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: Whedon quip equips like you know, like let's make a
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: joke and then the quip afterwards, like we watched Supergirl.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: I watched Superman last year, Like Superman was good. I
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: don't know if James Gunn can do another movie like
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: that anymore, where it's like emotional moment and then equip
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: like people are actually ready to have an emotional moment
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: with these characters, stop undercutting them. And this movie doesn't
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: undercut them. Like you said at the end of the movie,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: there's not some quip when Spider Man looks at that
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: kid in the audience. It is an earned moment, like
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: the MCU has not gotten in a really long time.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: And I want them to continue that because with Doomsday,
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: they have an opportunity with Doomsday as a character to
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: pull the fanos and give us a villain to actually
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: maybe not root for, but understand his motivations in a
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: way that don't just make him be a mustache twirling villain.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: And my hope is with Doomsday is they are able
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: to do that because Robert Downey Junior is that good
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: of an actor. He's been able to do that before.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: And all of the actors in these movies are great
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: actors in their own right. Tom Holland is a great actor.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: You can't bring this level of emotionality and charisma and
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: I think vulnerability to a character if you're not a
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: great actor, and he is.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting with that third Guardians of the Galaxy movie,
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: so much of that is the whole idea of the
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: Gomora in that not being the Gomora that Peter knew
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: and trying to re spark that whole thing. It's a
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: little similar here with this Mary Jane, even though she
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: is the same Mary Jane. But what I wanted to
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: say was when Peter sees Doctor Doom without his mask,
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: He's going to lose his fucking mind.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: They all are, they.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: But especially Peter, especially Peter, he's the one.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: So I oh my god, I mean I think that's
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: why I mean essentially the they I don't think they
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: said tom Alin is going to be in so.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: And that's that's the thing that I almost said to
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: my wife yesterday. But again, she's so far out of
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: the loop that she doesn't know about Robert Downey Junior
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: coming back. So that's going to be her surprise when
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: we go to see Doomsday. She's not going to know
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: until the mask comes off, and then she's going to
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: be like, what the fuck she doesn't?
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Oh, okay, So she doesn't know that Robert Okay, No,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: And I wonder how many people don't at this point
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: because I know some people okay, which is I get.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: It's really weird to me that people don't know. But yeah,
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: I was talking with I was talking with one of
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: my coworkers and they were surprised that doctor Doom showed
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: up at the end of the Fantastic Four. And then
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: when I said, oh, yeah, Robert Downey Junior, They're just like,
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: what what are you talking about? And I was like,
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: oh shit, I just ruined it for somebody. But I
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: was like, this was after the press conference, this was
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: after the empty chairs, this is you know, all of
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: the stuff that was leading up to this. I was like, okay,
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: I mean I was really surprised, and I think we
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: talked about this on the Fantastic four episode. I was
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: surprised that there wasn't a one quarter face turn. So
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: we've got to see a little bit of our DJ's
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: face that could have been anybody and that cloak, you know.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: But I'm kind of glad now that there might be
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: people that don't know who that is, and maybe they
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: will be surprised though. I mean, we've got, however, many
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: months before the the movie comes out, and they're gonna
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: be just touting that like fucking crazy, it's going to
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: be our DJ all over the place from now on.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: I don't know if that will be the case, because
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: I get that it's seal that they are not gonna
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: do that because the moment in the movie where that happens,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: I think, like you've already alluded to, is going to
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: be a moment that needs to be seen in the
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: movie and they won't spoil it in the trailers. I
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: think that that's going to be like the Jean Gray thing.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: They're just not like and you know, I joked about
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: like the Doomsday trailer already, like it kind of looks
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: the Doomsday trailer has no substance to it. It is
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: all just it's really just a bunch of shots with
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: no context. My assumption is that's intentional. I mean, I
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: know it's intentional obviously, but I'm assuming that the intentionality
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: behind it is because so much of the movie is
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: going to be things that you have to see in
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: the movie, because otherwise it's a massive goddamn spoiler, absolutely,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: like and things that I'm not even going to talk
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: about here because I know you don't watch any of
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: that stuff or keep up with any of that stuff,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: so I don't even want to possibly ruin it for
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: you or anybody else, but to say that the things
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: that have been talked about that have been confirmed just
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: by the comic con of it all, with like certain
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: actors being on stage, but other actors haven't been on stage,
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: and like who knows who? Who knows who is going
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: to be in that movie that they haven't said, And
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: I think that that's why so much of the movie
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: has not really been shown in the trailers. And my
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: hope is they don't show RDJ as Doomsday or as
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: doom until the movie. I hope that we don't get
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: that until maybe the week after, because they always do
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: like a spoiler trailer right before the movie comes out.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: I hope that they we don't see a single shot
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: of him sans mask until a week before the movie
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: comes out, or if not, after the movie's come out, genuinely,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: because there's no point. No.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: I really hope that as well, because yeah, they just
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: bound and determined to ruin all of this stuff for everybody.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: I'm like, no, just let things be surprises, please.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: Your pearl Mutter says it best, like it's it's a study.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: It's faction known that American audiences don't want to feel dumb,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: which is why movie trailer houses do that. They don't
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: want to feel like they don't know what's going to
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: happen in the movie, so the trailers are just spoiling
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: things ahead of time. And for the rest of us
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: that don't care about feeling dumb when you go into
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: a movie, it then forces us to not watch trailers
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: for things, because the trailer will show the entire movie.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: And if you're a discerning moviegoer i e. Someone who
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: goes to a couple movies a year, you can pick
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: up on the entire plot of a movie just by
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: watching trailers at this point, genuine absolutely, like entire acts
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: of the movie are kind of segmented in the trailer
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: at this point, and it's just it it ruins things,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: it really does it? So does?
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: I mean? I just saw an article or listical the
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: other day where I was talking about the biggest reveals
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: in movies over the last I don't know, however many
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: twenty years or whatever, and one of those was shutter Eyland,
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: and I was just like, bitch, I know from the
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: trailer what was going on with that thing? I didn't
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: need to see that movie at all. Dream may yeah,
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: that it was all him going crazy.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: And I like the idea that it wasn't all a dream.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: But that makes the movie somewhat more tolerable than it
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: actually is. Oh, I wonder if anyone's gonna have a
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: hot take on that one. Listen, Like shutter Island, where's
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: all your shutter Island fans going to bad for that movie?
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: People doing that for Supergirl?
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: Is it shutterheads?
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: Well? Yeah, yeah, the Supergirl fans. That's a different word
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: with an S on it. Talk about a distinction between
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: two movies starting with an S released within a month
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: of each other. My god, this movie has made almost
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: a billion dollars already. People will show up for your movie.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: It has nothing to do with the fact that a
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: woman is in it. I promise, I promise. It's not
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: a well made movie. People showed up for Superman last year.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: That movie made a boatload. This movie's made like nine
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: hundred million dollars. This Spider Man movie is. If you
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: put a good movie on screen, the audiences will show up.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: And this movie probably won't have a thirty to forty
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: or fifty percent drop off next weekend either. It will
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: probably have maybe a surge even There might be people
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: who want to go see this again. I don't know.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: This is a really good movie that I think will
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: resonate with a lot of people, especially people that are
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: big fans of Spider Man, which is most everybody who's
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: into these kinds of movies. Spider Man really is kind
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: of the character that crosses all boundaries. He's very bipartisan.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: I think people that like DC like Spider Man like
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: how could you not?
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: Yeah? Well, and I'll tell you. Racially, it was very
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: even in the theater yesterday, if not more black people
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: than white people, which I was just like, oh, that's cool,
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: you know that. I'm just very glad. I was surprised
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: at how many kids were in the theater. I don't
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: really think that this was a kid's movie.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: Spider Man is a kid's character, though, I mean he's like, yeah,
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: super he is, he is, but it was their little kid, like,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: who's your very superhero? They're probably gonna say Spider Man.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: I was surprised at how many people were wearing their
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: spider gear, like not costumes, but like all the T
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: shirts and stuff. It was really nice to see that,
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: And it was nice that it was a really respectful audience,
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: like everybody seemed to be into it. There's a one
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: time I had to yell at somebody for use in
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: their phone, but yeah, it was It was a good
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: theatrical experience. I think it was made even better by
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: me coming in late and missing all the pre show,
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: missing the MJR.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: Theme.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: That's our theater around here that we go to is MJR.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: And they play this trailer up front. It's not as
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: bad as the Nicole Kidman trailer, but it it's been
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: going since the pandemic, and so that's that's like six
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: years I've been seeing them. Well, take Away a year
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: for the pandemic, but that's five years. I've been seeing
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: this little trailer before the movie. Every time they send
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: me a survey after a movie plays, I just go
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: on and on and on about how they need a
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: new pre show, but they have it to listen to me.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: Would you prefer to have one that's changed every couple
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: weeks with a movie that's coming out so you get
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: to see yet another ad for the movie with Greg
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: Marcus of Marcus Theaters because that's what I get to see.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: And as someone who lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, that only
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: has to go to Marcus Theaters because the law of
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: the land here in Lincoln is that you can't put
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: a multiplex outside of downtown. So no movie theaters will
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: come and put a multiplex outside of downtown because they
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: literally can't. So the only movie theaters we can go
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: to in Lincoln are Marcus because Greg Marcus showed up
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: when they were gonna vote on it and asked them
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: to make sure it kept going. So the only place
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: you can go see anything other than maybe the most
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: popular for movies is downtown. I would rather see the
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: same thing for the last six years than him doing
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: his little like minstrel song in dance show of like
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: here are the super Trooper guys, and let me talk
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: about horror movies, like you don't give a shit about
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: any of this. Don't even poose you're pretending so hard
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: at showing.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: Who's whereas him? Or murraya manunas him?
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: Okay, because he directly affects my ability to go to
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: a movie theater that isn't Marcus in town and see something.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Not that I would go to Alamo Drafthouse if they
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: were in town. That place blows chunks. But I would
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: go to a cinemak or whatever goal or AMC. I
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: would go. AMC has pretty good deals on the movie theater,
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: like twenty bucks a month, see as many movies as
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: you want, or something like Marcus is one of those
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: bullshit ones where it's like, for twelve dollars a month,
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: you get one movie ticket, twenty five percent off concessions.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: Like so you're giving me like a a percentage off
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: of the concessions and that's it, Like cool, So they're
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: not twenty dollars for a bucket of popcorn. They they're
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: such a small chain they can't even offer a good
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: movie pass esque thing because they just don't care like
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: it's I I would much rather have the same thing
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: for the last six years than Greg Marcus's ugly mug
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: chuckin' and jiving for whomever's new movie's coming out. There
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: was a super Troopers one, and I was just like, oh,
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: oh my god, this made me not want to go
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: see the movie, knowing that they were doing exclusive ad
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: real with Greg market Wow. I oh yeah, I'm glad
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: I missed the pre show for that. I will miss
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: the pre show for that intention.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: I went through and purposefully tried to find bad reviews
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: of this film, just to see what people are critiquing
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: criticizing about this. Seems like people don't like how angsty
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: Spider Man is. I find it to be a actually
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: a good thing, especially that he's having a real crisis
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: of faith and having the you know, being alone in
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: this new world. I figure, if there's any time for
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: him to be angsty, it's right now. The other thing
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: was something that we've talked about is a good thing,
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: which is the whole idea of him interacting with other superheroes.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: I don't feel that they do it too much.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: No, I don't, but I guess the consensus among some
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: of the online cognitive sentai is that there's too much
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: of other characters in this movie. But to what extent
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: you've ever read the comics and it's all self contained
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: and he doesn't interact with other people or other superheroes
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: in the comics. As long as the character can be
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: drawn and is within the scope and license of the publisher,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: they can put Hulk in Spider Man comics advice versa.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: That's the only reason it's hard to do it in
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: the movie is for a whole host of reasons, scheduling
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: getting the actor there, Like unless you're just doing a abomination,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: and I don't mean like the look of it, but
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: like a tim Roth thing where it's just like, oh, look,
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: it's just abomination. Remember when tim Roth played that character,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: like and then obviously they did it again because he
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: wasn't in Shang Chi. Tim Roth wasn't abomination was but
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: tim Roth ended up being in that Sheehole show. So
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: you can do that in the movies of a certain kind,
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: but it's so much harder than it is in the comics.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: So whenever people have said anything about that, my response,
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: especially with the character like Spider man is have you
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: ever read a Spider Man comic before? Other characters show
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: up all the time, all exactly.
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: And that's kind of what got me into a lot
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: of different comics, was going back to Secret War the
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: very first one. And I didn't even know for a
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: long time that they had done other Secret War storylines,
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: because for me, it was a one and done. It
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: was a bringing together of all of these different heroes
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: and villains because there were all the villains there, and
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: it was a way for me to experience other characters
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: that it wasn't that familiar with. But the thing that
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: really got me was reading the panels and seeing the
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: little asterisk next to something and then down below it
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: says see Daredevil twenty five or see Fantastic four, two
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: fifty two, any of those type of things where you're like, oh, baby, exactly,
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: and this is before. Like at that point when I
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: was reading comics, I think there were three Spider Man comics.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: There was Amazing, Spectacular, and then maybe Web of and
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: I think one of those was just all repeat of
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: his old issues that they were re releasing. Basically, I
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: think that might have been web But then you would
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: get spectacular and amazing and those stories would go back
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: and forth, which I wasn't actually a fan of. I
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: was kind of like, no, I just want to twice
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: as much Spider Man. I don't need the same story
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: just kind of stretched out a little bit more. I
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: mean that changed when it was like the Hobgoblin and
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: everybody's trying to figure out who the hob Goblin was.
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: But now it's impossible because you've got so many things,
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: and they're constantly going across so many comic books, and
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: it's just like I can't afford to buy every single
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: one of these books. Especially I was buying comic books
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: when there were sixty cents, seventy five cents. Once I
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: got up to a dollar, which I know is cheap
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: now for a comic book.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: I was out. I don't even know where you can
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: get a comic book for a dollar, maybe other than
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: it like half rice books right, like the bargain bin,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: or like a garage sale. New comic books are like
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: five to six bucks. I will tell you. If you
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: want to read comic books the way I do it,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: get the Marvel app on your phone or iPad or
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: I guess maybe it's on browser, and you could just
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: it's like Netflix for comic books. You just read as
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: much as you like and there's not any cap on it.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: It's like ten fifteen dollars a months, probably more expensive
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: than it used to be, like most things. But I
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: you know, I don't think this movie leans too heavily
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: on the crossover of it all. I think, for me,
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: look like X Men is like the ultimate crossover movie
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: in a lot of ways. Like X Men, the characters
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: are all their own characters in their own right, and
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: anytime they come together for an X Men movie, I'm like, oh,
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: this is a massive team up movie because a lot
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: of these characters could be their own thing. This is
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: the first time Jean Gray has been in a movie
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: without the other X Men. Yeah, like this is it's
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: it's such a wild way to use Geen Gray because
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: she feels so novel and interesting, and I think that
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: that's hopefully, hopefully that's one of the like the like
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: like just from top down expectations from Kevin Figy with
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: the new X Men is this needs to feel different.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: It can't just be Professor X and Magneto at the
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: school together, like nobody wants to see that again. Give
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: us something else, do something else with it, and I
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: think this is a step in that right direction. I
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: don't if you want to complain about that Jean Gray
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: being in this movie, cool, but it just seems like
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: a non issue. Maybe take Black Widow out of this movie.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: But I like that we get to see Florence Pugh
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: and Tom holland Cheriscene together. So shut up, Jesus. I'm
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: the critical one here, Jesus. Fuck fuck me the people
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: being I don't like the fucking c If you read
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: a spider Man comic, the Ultimate Spider Man video game,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: there were levels where you fought Hulk and Venom and
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: Wolverine and like all these other characters are showing up, like,
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: chill the fuck out. If you've never read a spider
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: Man comic, go read a spider Man comic, because he
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: does not exist in a vacuum, none of these characters. Do.
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: You Know what the best thing about a crossover is, Chris,
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: is that you of the culture cast get to join
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: me on the projection Booth, or me of the Projection
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: Booth gets to join you on the culture Cast, and
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: you don't know which one you're listening.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: To, right, exactly right, it's technically both are you good.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I don't have a lot of
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: issues with this movie. I actually don't think a lot
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: of other people do. This is probably going to be
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: one of the best MCU movies that has ever come out,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: and I think you might agree, though it is a
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: little recency bias. I think it's the best movie that's
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: come out since Endgame.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: Well, I still like the last Spider Man movie. I
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: think I like it more than you, which I feel
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: kind of tied up Endgame a little bit more than
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: Endgame allowed. You know, it was like that phase, whatever
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: fucking phase we were in, it felt.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: Like it ended under the second one, the one I'm talking.
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: About, the one with all the Spider Man. It felt
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: like that with Doctor Strange, like that came out right
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: after Endgame? No, and did two come out right after Endgame?
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Yeah? Because two has Spider Man dealing with the death
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: of Tony Start.
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: Oh shit, you're right.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: I was like, are you talking about the second one?
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that was no, It's okay, Like That's why I
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: was like, I want to make sure like you remember
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: correctly because it seems like that. But the third movie
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: is actually the first multiverse that's right, because it's just
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: fucking crazy given how much multiverse stuff they like ramped up.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: Oh I got it first stuff obviously, like Loki really
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: was the first thing. But Loki was a TV show,
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: so I as in terms of movies, it was Doctor
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: Strange and Spider Man and it was I guess that
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: was what like the same summer.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: Well and then and we got all geared up for
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: Kane with that one. So I can't wait for him
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: to come back, because I mean, he he was so
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: great in that that last ant Man movie.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: Should we tell him or do I need to tell Mike? Mike?
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: I Mike, Now I have to tell you something. The
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: dog is not coming back. We're taking the farm. He
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: has to go out to the farm. We're just going
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: down the road a couple. We can go visit him
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: on the weekends. But Jonathan, that's where he's gonna be
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: and there's nothing wrong with him. What a fucking what
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: a mess. I do wonder what this all would have
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: been like if we had just been doing Doctor Doom,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: and now we don't have because again think back to
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: post Endgame, they still didn't have fucking X men. We're
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: still we still they were like We're gonna do Kang
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: and then we'll do Doctor Doom. That's what they were saying.
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: I still remember you can go back and change history
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: and whatever, but that was the thing. So maybe this
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: is the best thing that could happen to the MCUs
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: that they're gonna reboot everything. Maybe that'll get rid of
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: the bloat. Maybe that'll get rid of all the issues
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: that we've seen and all the quippy, you know, moments
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: that just seem unnecessary at this point. Like people are good,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: we these movies can change and get better. And I
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: think if the next MCU movie is three quarters as
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: good as this movie is, just seventy five percent of
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: the way there, I think it will be one of
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: the top ten MCU movies that's come out, because this
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: movie really, I think sets the standard and the bar
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: very high moving forward. And I also think Destin Daniel
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: Cretin should be given a lot of credit here for
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: how good this movie is. He is a great director.
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: I think he is going to have an opportunity now
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: to go do whatever the fuck he wants, given that
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: this movie has made a boatload of money. But and
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: guess what, he's not just another white director hired by
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: the MCU. He is a Hawaiian who has made his
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: name doing other things and then did Shang Chi and
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: then five years later did this and Wonder Man, which
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: is canceled unfortunately. But I genuinely like I know people
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: like to say we drag a lot of movies, but
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: maybe drag us for being too effusive this time. See
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: how that fus.
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: Well, Chris, thank you so much for joining me on
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: this very special crossover. Do you want to tell the
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: folks where they can hear us all the time?
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: Yeah, they can hear us over at Weirdingwaymedia dot com,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: where our audio empire continues to expand with such great
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: shows as the upcoming Harrison Ford show that's a crossover
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: with my show, The Culture Cast, Mike Show, The Projection Booth,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: and Richard Adam's show The Paranormal Bookshelf Richard Adam, which
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: is not the name of the show, It's Richard Adams's
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Paranormal Bookshelf. Boy. I guess I lost fifty cents and
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: then made a dollar in that in that phrasing right there,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: I lost the money that he normally gives me. But
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: that crossover show is found a Weirdingway Media, along with
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: Susan Lambert, Adam's Eighties TV Ladies, Jamie Bennings Filmentaries, Emily Intraravia's.
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: Oh God, what the Fuck's the name of her show,
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: Feminine Critique, Feminine Critique Boy almost made it to the
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: end without another note, Emily Intraravia is the Feminine Critique,
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: and so many more, along with new shows coming out
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: towards the end of this year.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: And yes, Mike and I will be covering Doomsday when
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: that comes out, obviously, and that's the next MCU thing.
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: So yeah, that's where you can hear us. As for
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: other things, mypatreon at patreon dot com, slash culture cast
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: and Mike's Patreon patreon dot com slash Projection booth where
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: you can go to kick a couple dollars our way

- 1:31:09Speaker 1: launches here in a couple of weeks. That's where you'll
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: be able to hear it a month early ad free,
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: So go do that if you're interested in that. And
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: Richard Adams Patreon as well, So Richard Adam, I guess
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: patreon dot com slash Richard Adam, So yeah, that's where
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: you can go to find the three of us and yeah,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: make sure to come back for the next episode of
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: either of our shows, and definitely in December we talk
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: about doomsday, about
