Latest / The Daily Writer / Same Ingredients, Different Presentation
Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Rider, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: What's the difference between an expensive steakhouse and a fast food burger place?
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: They both use the same ingredients for their main product, which is of course beef, yet the experience between the two places can be vastly different.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: When you have a dinner at a great steakhouse, it's not just about the food.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Although the food might be great, it's also the experience that counts.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: The decor, the table settings, and the exceptional service makes a huge difference in your overall dining experience.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: On the other hand, the experience can be totally different when you go through a cheap fast food burger place.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: There's a good chance your burger will be sloppily put together and the person at the drive-thru window will be kind of halfway paying attention.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And there's also a decent chance that something about your order is just going to be messed up.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: So this is not really about the ingredients.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: It's really more about taking the raw ingredients, preparing them the right way, then serving those to people with care and attention so they have a great experience.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Well, the same thing is true for our words.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: You can write a first draft and then publish it, or you can take great care to make sure that it's edited and that it's presented in a way that people enjoy.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: It's like the difference between a fast food burger and a high quality steak.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The same ingredients, different presentation.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: When you edit your writing, you are taking care to make sure your grammar, your punctuation, your spelling, and your overall content is as good as you can possibly make it.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: It doesn't necessarily mean that you have to hire an editor for everything that you write, but it does mean that you should take the baseline steps to ensure that whatever you publish is excellent.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: I recommend at the very least rereading your material a few times before publishing it, but also running it through grammarly as well as doing a spell check.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Those are free and very simple ways to improve your writing.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I get it, we're all in a hurry, we all have lots of things to do.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: But if you call yourself a writer, you owe it to your readers to give them a great experience by making sure your writing is as excellent as you can make it.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: If you've been listening to this show for any length of time, you know that one of the four practices of a great writer is creativity.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And in order to stay creative, you've got to have great input.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And that's where writing prompts come in.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: A writing prompt is a sentence or two that helps you break through creative blocks, brainstorm new ideas, and get back into a state of flow.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Writing prompts are an awesome creative tool for journaling, storytelling, creative writing, stress relief, social media posts, and so much more.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: But the great news is that you don't have to create these yourself.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: We've put together an amazing package of 365 daily writing prompts.
