- 0:53our listeners, and among them is Keith. Thank you so much for your
- 0:57support. Well, now it's time for days a case of Frank Rice,
- 1:03The Adventure of the Lovable Characters. The Adventures of Frank Race starring Paul Dubo
- 1:10with Tony Barrett as Mark Donovan. The War changed many things, the face
- 1:22of the earth and the people on it. Before the war, Frank Race
- 1:26worked as an attorney, but he traded his law books for the Cloak and
- 1:30Dagger of the Oss and when it was over, his former life was over.
- 1:34Two adventure had become his business, The Adventures of Frank Race. And
- 1:53now we joined Frank Race for the Adventure of the Lovable Characters. There's something
- 2:02about San Francisco that makes you feel alive. Perhaps it's the climate, but
- 2:07whatever it is, it calls for physical activity. Mark and I had been
- 2:12through a rough day, and yet night found us engaged in a healthful exercise
- 2:15at a bowling alley near our hotel. How's that for nicking a split spear?
- 2:23Very need, Marcus, that's the frame and you win again? Yes,
- 2:27and want a pice? Take it for a Finnish time. Give me
- 2:30a chance to get even. Let's have a cup of coffee with the counter
- 2:32first. Okay, I'm Actel Javis. Hey, Hey, look what's that
- 2:42name again? The girl Mark referred to had been on hand for an hour
- 2:46or more watching our game. She was lovely in an offbeat sort of way,
- 2:50not at all like an American girl. She came up to the corner
- 2:53and at first she hesitated, as though she were going to take a seat.
- 2:55Then she changed her mind suddenly and walked towards us. Frank Race,
- 3:00that's my name, and this is mister Donovan. You've been tagging us for
- 3:05about an hour, and I'm curious. I have been deliberating whether or not
- 3:09to trust you with a matter of great importance. It's not an easy decision
- 3:14to make when one is in a strange country. For somebody who is in
- 3:17a strange country. You found us all right in a rather strange place.
- 3:21Yeah, yeah, whatever you're equipped for assisted ain't Poland. I know of
- 3:28you by reputation, mister Race. The clerk at the hotel said that I
- 3:31might find you here. I need your help. My name is Suzette.
- 3:37I am the wife of Prince Muitbe. Wait a minute, I need the
- 3:39guy who got that big spread in the papers last week. Yes, just
- 3:43a rape from India. He's the ruler of the province of Kaijan. That's
- 3:46right, mister Race. He came to America for medical health. Medicine is
- 3:50not one of my accomplishments, I know, But he needs you in another
- 3:53capacity. Please come to our suite at the Fair Hills. We are telling
- 3:59about an hour. You must be near my husband because well, I am
- 4:04certain that somebody intends to kill him. Prince mohoud based suite at the Fair
- 4:15Hills Hotel turned out to be more than a sweet. The prince and his
- 4:18retinue, including all twelve of his wives, occupied the entire fourth floor of
- 4:24the hostelry and all the wives and servants wore Native guard making it difficult to
- 4:28distinguish one from another. But we were finally steered to the apartment of Suzette.
- 4:31Were we not well, Grice? Tell me some? Of course,
- 4:35when these people get ready to leave here, how will the hotel know whether
- 4:40they are aware on their clothes or steel in a sheet? That is a
- 4:43question mark. Oh, mister Race, mister Donovan, come in please,
- 4:50I have prepared my mother in law for your coming. Your mother in law,
- 4:55yes, the Prince's mother, the Maharani of Kajan. She is in
- 4:59the next room through those drapes. She may be very difficult. Show me
- 5:02a modern lawd than ain't quired. Mark, Let's go, gentlemen, the
- 5:13Maharani of Kajan. The Maharani of Kajan was quite a surprise. She was
- 5:19dressed in tweeds, her hair was close cropped, and it took only one
- 5:24look at her florid face to tell me she was not a native of Indian.
- 5:28She was as British as a cup of tea. My daughter in law's
- 5:30overstepped her authority in calling you here. Gentlemen. However, since you are
- 5:34here, you may as well put an end to her foolish fears. Your
- 5:38son's wife doesn't seem to think they are foolish my son has twelve wives.
- 5:42They've all got some sort of complaint. Suzette happens to be French and much
- 5:46too emotional. But Mamma, don't call me mama. I don't like to
- 5:50interfere in a family matter. But perhaps you can tell me why you think
- 5:54Suzette's fears are not grounded, because she's as neurotic as my son. If
- 5:58he had one English girl in the he's married, he'd have more backbone.
- 6:00Providence knows. I've tried to buck him up. Brother one battles. Why
- 6:05does your son the prince require medical attention? Not medical, mister Race psychiatric.
- 6:11We came to America to a consult a psychiatrist. There's nothing wrong with
- 6:15him physically, but there is. He's been having no since Sits all in
- 6:17his mind. And find that out for yourself, mister Race. Doctor Kerner's
- 6:20his psychiatrist. Ask him in the Grayson building and see him tomorrow. Thank
- 6:25you, I will very well. Then you're dismissed. That's what, Mama,
- 6:27You're dismissed. We left the Maharani and stepped into the corridor and did
- 6:32a little broken field, running through the other eleven wives who were wandering around
- 6:36like a football team between halves, and then Susette led us into a small
- 6:41room. He's so strong, so overbearing. Please you must help me.
- 6:46I should like to see your husband. This is the anteroom to his quarters.
- 6:53I would rather not go in with you. Shoot yourself. Look,
- 6:56Mark, there's something you can do. Meanwhile, see if you can locate
- 6:58the home of doctor Kerner, and if you do, call him and ask
- 7:00him if I may drop in on him tonight, corner, okay, ceiling,
- 7:03and don't get detoured by a bed sheet on your way out. And
- 7:09now the prince, right through that door. I will try to see you
- 7:13again before you leave. I opened the door and went into the next room.
- 7:18It was a large room equipped like a gymnasium. Seated in a chair,
- 7:21wearing an undershirt and shorts was a burly figure reminiscent of Tony Galletto.
- 7:26It was puffing on a cigar, and he greeted me through clenched teeth and
- 7:29a tobacco haze. Hi fella, Well hello, so what are you staring
- 7:35at me? For? Mac You're not prince Mohud Bay made a prince.
- 7:42Hey, you got a real sense of human mac na. I ain't the
- 7:45Prince. I'm Buttsy Reagan. I'm a physical culture ex boy. Oh for
- 7:50a minute, I thought I'd be eating doctor Kerner myself. Nothing. I
- 7:56came in to see the Prince. I thought he was here. He is,
- 7:59he's exercise, at least that's what he calls it. But where is
- 8:03he? Over there in the corner at a room, Seeing it was believing
- 8:07it. The Prince, clad in his bed sheet, was in the corner,
- 8:11standing on his head. His two feet were up in the air,
- 8:13and he looked like some kind of a modernistic lamp. I've been trying to
- 8:16get him to work out on the rowing machine, but it's no dice.
- 8:20I come up here twice a day, and all he wants to do a
- 8:22stand on his head. He learned it from some guy named yike Yogi.
- 8:26Yeah, must be a jerk. That could drive him nuts. You know,
- 8:31is he in a trance or can I talk to him? You could
- 8:33try grab a pillar and sit down in front of him. Thanks, Prince
- 8:43mohoud Bay go away. I am concentrating. You can concentrate later. I
- 8:48need some information. Do you have any enemies? I have many enemies,
- 8:50Like who everybody? I'm surrounded by enemies, except for my mother. She
- 8:56protects me. I see, but is there any particular enemy who sent you
- 9:03here? Your wife? Don't be invasive? Answer me. Oh, oh,
- 9:07the one named Suzepp's just as I thought, another enemy. Get out
- 9:13of here, Get out before I quote for him. All right, all
- 9:16right, I'll go take it easy. Thanks. Oh that's okay. Is
- 9:22is he always like this? Yeah? Happy, ain't it? Oh?
- 9:26Delightful, just delightful. Find our doctor, Colonel lives Mark. Sure did
- 9:43gotta join a knob Hill. I tell him that you was coming to see
- 9:48good. Let's drive over. I'm I'm sorry I kept you waiting so long.
- 9:52Yeah, I didn't mind. I had the radio. One gave me
- 9:56a chance to hear Spade, Sam Spade, Sam Spade, Corley the King
- 10:01in a Weston Swing. We think I am a trader. Doctor Kerner's home
- 10:11was what you might expect of knob Hill, luxurious and exclusive. As the
- 10:16butler admitted me, I noticed an imposing portrait of a very striking woman dominating
- 10:20the central hall. I was led into the library and there was another portrait
- 10:24of the same woman over the fireplace. There were also several photographs of her
- 10:28expensively framed and prominently displayed in all parts of the room. About five minutes
- 10:33passed before doctor Kerner came in. I was told that your visit is urgent,
- 10:39mister Race. What is your problem. Well, I'm not a patient,
- 10:43doctor Kerner, I'm an investigator. I want some information about Prince Mohud
- 10:48Bay. I've been informed that you are treating him. The prince. Oh,
- 10:52yes, very interesting case. His wife, one of his wife seems
- 10:56to think that somebody is trying to eliminate the prince. Where if the prince
- 11:01seems to share the same view, he's been a problem, mister Race.
- 11:05I don't know how a man can be so childish, so muddled. Then
- 11:09you don't think there's anything to the suspicions, but it takes a long time
- 11:13to be sure. The Prince does have a very definite persecution complex, but
- 11:16that's only part of it. The roots are deep in another problem. Mind
- 11:20telling me about it, since you're an authorized investigator. Not at all.
- 11:24Prince Mohood Bay has an Oedipus complex that is staggering. A mother fixation of
- 11:30the worst kind. She dominates his every thought. When she's near, she
- 11:33makes him afraid. But how come he has so many wives. She doesn't
- 11:39seem to favor the idea, as I understand it. Every time his mother
- 11:43left the province or permitted him to go on a vacation by himself, he
- 11:46married a new girl. Understandable anything else, No, I'm certain the mother
- 11:52fixation is the root of it. I know it must be difficult for you
- 11:54to understand as a layman, but it's a common psychiatric problem. Some grow
- 12:00men can be handled like children by their mothers. Well, thank you,
- 12:03I'll go now, I'll show you out. Oh I noticed that you've been
- 12:07eyeing my portraits and photographs. Lovely? Oh, yes, yes, the
- 12:13subject is a very attractive woman, quite commending. Ah, yes, she
- 12:16is the most wonderful woman in the world. Your wife, Oh great Jupiter.
- 12:22No, mister Race, I'm not married my mother. Oh, thank
- 12:26you, and good night, Doctor Kernel. I don't know, yes,
- 12:39me, Race, It all sounds pretty screwing. Maybe yes, Mark,
- 12:43maybe no. But Suzette strikes me as being a sensible girl, even though
- 12:46she is snowed under by the Maharani. You mean you're gonna keep working on
- 12:50it just for kicks, even if there's nothing to it. We've been meeting
- 12:54a crop of lovable characters. Yeah, I'll buy part of that. We
- 12:58have been meeting characters. Listen to that guy blowing his haunt to pass,
- 13:03and he's a half a block behind. I don't think he wants to pass.
- 13:07He wants us to wait until he catches up to us. Pull over.
- 13:09You're the boss, that's your mister Race. It's busy, the physical
- 13:20culture expert. Yeah, busy. I try to catch it the ducks,
- 13:24but he was driving off when I got there. You gotta get back to
- 13:26the Fair Hills Hotel right away. Why what's wrong? I don't know for
- 13:30sure. The dame was hysterical, but somebody's been shot. We'll return to
- 13:43the adventures of Frank Race in just about one minute. And now back to
- 13:56the Adventures of Frank Race. Police car surrounded the block near the Fair Hills
- 14:05Hotel. By the time we arrived. I flashed my credentials and was admitted
- 14:09to Prince mohood based fourth floor domain. I passed the Prince's apartment and immediately
- 14:15discovered that he was not the victim. He was in the corner standing on
- 14:18his head, ignoring the pleas of a police sergeant who wanted him right side
- 14:22up for questioning. I found Suzette's room under the police guard. The body
- 14:26of a woman was stretched out near the window. An ambulance attendant was fixing
- 14:30her shoulder. Suzette was in the quarters of the Maharami. This is no
- 14:33time for hysterics. She's had quite a shock. I imagine you might try
- 14:37being kind, young men. I am the Mara Harami of Kajan, and
- 14:41no common you will happen to be in the United States. Dear lady,
- 14:45we're all commoners here and we obey nobody but the traffic cop on the corner.
- 14:48So you can stop that line of chatter. Now, come on,
- 14:50honey, sit up or race. It was horrible. I saw it.
- 14:56Grabble, now tell me what happened. I was getting ready to retire,
- 15:01and the shot came through the window. And then one thing I don't know
- 15:05who was the victim, by certain an entirely unimportant person. I told you
- 15:13to get off that line. Shootings are very important here, whether the victim
- 15:16is a maid or a queen, poor girl, Why would anybody want to
- 15:20shoot her? I don't think anybody did. It was accidental. That bullet
- 15:24was meant for you, baby, For me. Nonsense, is it?
- 15:28We'll see now, you said the bullet came through the window. Yes,
- 15:33but I didn't even hear it. We didn't know it was a bullet until
- 15:37later. Is there a balcony outside the window? No? Nothing. You
- 15:41better call the ambulance doctor when he's finished and hadn't give you a sedative.
- 15:45I'm going to find the officer in charge. I found the officer in charge
- 15:56and stuck with him until he got a ballistic report. The bullet had come
- 15:58from a high powered rifle. With that bit of information, I picked Mark
- 16:03up and headed for the streets. All right, so what are you looking
- 16:07at? The building for Suzette's room is located on the front of the hotel,
- 16:11and the shot came from the outside. Yet there's nothing across the street
- 16:15for the small public park. Wait a minute, you mean a shot was
- 16:18fired from the park up to a fourth floor window. No, the bullet
- 16:22took almost a straight course, so maybe the guy with the gun climbed a
- 16:26train. None of the trees of that tall. The shot must have been
- 16:30fired from one of the buildings on the other side of the park. Are
- 16:32great, But by who then, I dick, it's a good six hundred
- 16:36yards over there, I'm building. That's not too far for an expert marksman
- 16:38with the telescopic site. And that's why Suzette didn't hear a shot. Yeah,
- 16:42but somebody over there would avoid it. That isn't two choice of neighborhood
- 16:47over there, mark, the park is the dividing line. Wait, wait
- 16:49a minute, that's right, Joe pass the other side and the way down
- 16:52before and it is a penny arcade and the shooting gallery. Yeah, so
- 16:56a shot over there could get lost. Look, I want you to check
- 17:00those buildings, fourth and fifth floor levels, see if you can find where
- 17:03the shot may have come from. Will do? Oh what are you going
- 17:06to? I'm going to see if I can bake an upside down cake.
- 17:15I'm telling you, Mac, the cops couldn't flip them over, So I
- 17:18don't see how you expected, though it talked on the way you did before,
- 17:21all right, But he's turning my whole world topsy turvy. I feel
- 17:25silly talking to a man who's standing on his head. So I gotta be
- 17:27here a couple of hours a day, and I feel silly too, But
- 17:30after all, Mac a box a buck for what I get on his job
- 17:34I'll blow a bubble pipe if he wants. You've got logic on your side,
- 17:38buttsy, well, I guess it's the only way. Nice to see
- 17:45you again, Prince, Let's be friends. You mind if I shake your
- 17:49foot? Go away? You disturb my meditation? Ever do any big game
- 17:55hunting? Prince? Why do you want to know? Are you gathering information
- 17:59from my inner No, I'm planning to visit your country. I thought we
- 18:02might get together and bag a few tigers. I won't go with you.
- 18:06I don't like you. I won't let you use my elephants. My mother
- 18:08won't even let you get into the province. You mean you're going to keep
- 18:11all those nice tigers for yourself. Yes, all right, then I won't
- 18:15let you play with my part cheese. He set see you later. See
- 18:23he's as cracked as a glass pitcher after a brewer's convention. He's not as
- 18:26cracked as he seems to be. Buddy, what do you mean come into
- 18:30the andy room for a minute. Sure all comes to Zette called you to
- 18:37go after me when I was out at the doctors. She didn't have to
- 18:41call me. I was right here. I guess she picked me because I
- 18:44know the town. Somebody could have telephoned. The doc's number ain't listed.
- 18:47Where was nature Boy when the shooting took place? In this standing on his
- 18:52nagging? Where else? You're sure of that? Sure, I'm sure I
- 18:56was with him. All I ever seemed to do is sit there and count
- 18:59this just the same. Keep your eye on him. He may be all
- 19:02right when he's standing on his head, but things may start to happen if
- 19:04he gets on his feet. It was a cinch. Nothing else would happen
- 19:15at the Fairy Hills Hotel. While the Boys in Blue were parading the halls,
- 19:18Mark hadn't returned yet, so I left a message at the desk telling
- 19:22him I'd gone back to our hotel to turn in for the night. I
- 19:26was drifting off to dreamland when Mark, as usual, slipped in on tip
- 19:30toe. He rates up, because where did you learn to be so gentee?
- 19:37I can't come in without open the door? Can I come on?
- 19:37Come on? Pile out of a kip. I got bangs to show you.
- 19:41Let's like what like where the shot could have come from? It hit
- 19:42dead maid? Is it a place that ties in like a couple of boy
- 19:47scout and not s? Look? Do you know what's on the fourth floor
- 19:49in a building smack across the park. I'll know if you'll ever get around
- 19:53and telling me. I am there a gymnasium, a physical culture studio owned
- 19:57by one putsy Re. And unless I am very much mistaken, he is
- 20:02the same guy which you said was I had to keep the prince in trim.
- 20:04That is a chunk of information. Mark tost me my clothes. Oh,
- 20:10anyway, there is more, and this could also fit. What is
- 20:11it? What's the name of that sick you know, the sick guy doctor,
- 20:18you mean the psychiatrist. Yeah, yeah, that's him, the sick
- 20:19chiatrist. Yeah, colonel, that's what I thought. Yeah. Well,
- 20:22on the fifth floor of the next build. And see there's an office by
- 20:26James Koiner rings a bell the last name I mean, So I checked.
- 20:30The guy runs a salvage business, and he happens to be the doc's brother.
- 20:34How do you like that? You like my information? Oh, Marcus,
- 20:37I love it. Let's have a look at both those places right now.
- 20:45The office of James Kinder turned out to be innocent enough. From all
- 20:48appearances, it was a legitimate business. We locked the place carefully and moved
- 20:52to the next building and gained access to the fourth floor gymnasium operated by Buzzy
- 20:56Reagan. Well looks Bob Belts a drunk laying around. Don't go trip on
- 21:02me, I won't m three windows facing across the park. Suzette's room is
- 21:07the sixth from the corner of the hotel on the fourth floor. Perfect view
- 21:12from here, all right, and the maid could have been blasted from me
- 21:15here. Yes, turn the lights lights you want to give us await that
- 21:18coton. Nobody will notice. It's only a gym. There isn't even a
- 21:21watchman in the building. Okay, you want lights, you get lights.
- 21:25Yeah, what are you looking for? This? For one thing on the
- 21:30window? Still here, It's just a mark and a dust, it's all,
- 21:33Yes, the same kind of a mark a gun barrel would make if
- 21:37it were arrested. There to steady the aim, that's right. And there
- 21:40may be an empty cartridge on the floor side. What was that? Any
- 21:45bullet came through the window, but no gunshot. That means it came from
- 21:48the hotel across the park. Crawl over and dust the lights. Then we
- 21:51can get out of here. I mean a weather picked off the maid from
- 21:53over here is now trying to blast us over there. That's right, Mark,
- 21:56because we're too close to winding this up. We're going back to the
- 22:00Ferry Hills Hotel for our final visit. Going back into the hotel this time
- 22:08was a bit more nerve racking than other visits. The would beat killer now
- 22:11knew that somebody was closing in, and we were logical suspects, even though
- 22:15it might have been impossible to recognize as fully through a telescopic site, which
- 22:19also accounted for the maid being victim of the bullet intended for Suzette. I
- 22:22posted Mark near the elevators where he could stop anybody who try to leave.
- 22:26I had it for the Prince's chamber, but just then the door opened and
- 22:29outstepped doctor Kerner. Well, mister Race, how nice to see you again.
- 22:33You're abroad rather late, doctor. If the Prince needed some attention,
- 22:37mostly a medical in this case, he's been injured, Oh no, just
- 22:41a severe headache from standing on his head. It's really very amusing. I
- 22:45think he's doing all this simply because his mother told him to do it for
- 22:48some unfathomable reason. I thought it was an act. Is he's sleeping now?
- 22:52Oh yes, very soundly. He won't come round until morning. A
- 22:56man at the elevator may try to prevent your leaving. Just tell him I
- 23:00said it was all right. Oh, thank you, mister Race. And
- 23:03I'm especially glad I saw you because I have a gift i'd like you to
- 23:07accept. Oh it's this picture of my mother, since you admire the other
- 23:11so much, Well, thank you, doctor, just what I've always wanted.
- 23:18I stuffed mother Colonel's picture into my pocket next to my heart, and
- 23:22head it for Suseette's apartment. I opened the door and the room was empty,
- 23:26and I caught the sound of voices from behind the drapes that separated the
- 23:29Maharani's quarters from Suzette's. I moved over and listened. I tell him why
- 23:36because I have ordered you to say nothing. I know how to handle these
- 23:38things, and I shall tell him when the time is right. In case
- 23:41my husbands, he has a right to know immediately. I'd listened to you
- 23:44long enough. Well, girls, we seem to be having a disagreement.
- 23:48Oh dare you and you keep quiet now, Susette, what is it?
- 23:52She doesn't want you to tell your husband. I'm going to have a baby,
- 23:57a new little prince, which the Maharani couldn't keep quiet forever unless you
- 24:03happen to be dead. Insinuate. I'm insinuating that you were trying to kill
- 24:07this girl so that she and her child wouldn't be able to take top spot
- 24:10in your son's affections. You don't like the back seat old girl, but
- 24:14you shot a maid by accident, and that's still the stuff that jails are
- 24:18made up here. No, you won't. You hired busy Regan to keep
- 24:22him here evenings and give you the run of his gym, and a sportswoman
- 24:25like you can handle a rifle very well. I'm sure, Mamma, you
- 24:30don't call me mama. Come on, Suzette, I'll take you to another
- 24:33room until the police come here to pick up mama. Police stick me up
- 24:37for shooting a servant. Ridiculous and kaijan Mama, perhaps, but not here,
- 24:42Mama, not here. The police arrived finally and took Mama away to
- 24:53a place where you can't get very bossy unless you happen to own the keys,
- 24:57so she said, dashed off to tell her husband the new was both
- 25:00good and bad, but she had to save it until the next morning.
- 25:03Anyhow, and until the headache treatment wore off. Mamma wound up with a
- 25:07sentence that promised to keep her out of circulation until the expected junior Prince would
- 25:11be past the diaper's stage. As a matter of fact, there didn't seem
- 25:15to be any point in the happy little family hanging around until Mamma got out,
- 25:18so Mark drove me down to the docks to say goodbye to Susette and
- 25:22her prince as they set sail for dear old kaijan Ah. You know Race,
- 25:27this fine boy. You stuff always gets me Ba, I want a
- 25:32time, want to cry when I start waving good bye, even if I
- 25:34don't want the people on the ball right, they better get here sooner they'll
- 25:37miss the boat. Yeah. He who comes from said, nah, what's
- 25:41the guide on? I don't know? All right? Race? Oh,
- 25:45I'm so glad we could see you before we go. Yes, thank you
- 25:49for your assistance. Well why do you look at me so strangely? I
- 25:55didn't recognize you for a minute, Prince? We must score of board now,
- 26:02goodbye, mister Race. I have a pleasure? Was my pleasure?
- 26:07By say? Hey, that was kind of dopey? What Mark not recognizing
- 26:12the prince you've seen him before, yes, Marcus, but you're forgetting something
- 26:17All the other times he was upside down. The Adventures of Frank Race starring
- 26:37Paul Dubov with Tony Barrett as Mark Donovan comes to you from Hollywood. Others
- 26:41heard in tonight's cast were Monty Marquets, Michael Anne Barrett, Stanley Prager,
- 26:47and Byron Kane. This series is written and directed by Joel Murcott and Buckley
- 26:52Angel. The music is composed and played by Ivan Ditmars. Be sure to
- 26:56me win us again this time next week for another dramatic chapter in the Adventures
- 27:00of Frank Race. O Gilmore speaking. This is a BPS production. Welcome
- 27:41back when. One of the more light episodes of Frank Race. My favorite
- 27:45pardon there was when he said he was listening to Spade on the radio,
- 27:53and Race said, Sam Spade, and he explained it with some other badens
- 28:00and Donovan said, what do you think I am a trader? That part
- 28:03was just really a funny and a nice little reference to another program. All
