- 0:13Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:15It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, South Africa's
- 0:19multi-award winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:21With me from Brenthurst Wealth this week is Andre Besson,
- 0:23and we're going to talk about something that I've spoken about many times in
- 0:28recent weeks and even months.
- 0:30but continues to fascinate and that is gold.
- 0:33Andre, you couldn't resist, could you?
- 0:35You couldn't resist, I can't resist, we had to talk about gold.
- 0:40Yeah, no, it's like the gold rush, everybody wants to get in.
- 0:43It's a fascinating topic and especially if you dig a bit under the bonnet and
- 0:50understand why things happening
- 0:52in the way they are.
- 0:54Okay, let's examine that first of all because it's my contention.
- 0:55that a couple of years ago, maybe even further back,
- 0:59central banks and smart money started buying gold because of various reasons.
- 1:04I'd like to hear your opinion first, please.
- 1:07Yes, Janne, 100% correct.
- 1:09If you look at the Russians, they knew if they would do something naughty, then it
- 1:16will be with sanctions,
- 1:18because it's not the first rodeo.
- 1:20they in the Crimea
- 1:24annexation the u.s government has hit them with sanctions so the first
- 1:31thing they did after that was they started to sell their u.s treasuries and then buy
- 1:38gold with that so by the time they
- 1:40invaded ukraine there
- 1:40was no u.s treasuries on their forex balance sheet and a lot of gold so yeah
- 1:46it's not something that's
- 1:48happened only the last week or month no and the other thing is in my opinion,
- 1:52and you can shoot me down if you want to, that certain governments,
- 1:57certain regions are in such bad debt, the only way they can get out of debt is to
- 2:03reflate.
- 2:05And it's Japan, it's Europe, it's the United States of America.
- 2:07And if inflation starts to pick up, then people go for gold.
- 2:11So that's why they started this amazing run.
- 2:15And I think it was early 2022 that gold went through 2000.
- 2:21And here we are, late 2025,
- 2:24briefly went to 4,390 last week.
- 2:29It's come back a bit now, but it's been an astonishing movement.
- 2:35Yeah, so it's quite crazy, you know, just from 3,000 to 4,000, that's been very
- 2:40quick.
- 2:41So if you look back, so I'm not shooting you down on that.
- 2:44If you look at the U.S.
- 2:45debt, you know, and...
- 2:47Just the income and money that comes in through taxes and goes out through
- 2:51expenditure.
- 2:53They, one commentator say,
- 2:54it's been like more than 20 years that they are in a deficit.
- 2:59They haven't made more money than they've given away,
- 3:03like through just to people or in expenses.
- 3:08So, and the COVID crisis has just, or pandemic has just exaggerated that.
- 3:13So there's a lot of debt and that plays into three themes.
- 3:17Currently, gold is running because central banks buying, the debasement trade,
- 3:22people trading away from the US or de-dollarization.
- 3:27And then the third one is basically gold as a neutral foreign reserve currency to
- 3:34trade with
- 3:34other partners.
- 3:35So, yeah, it's basically those three as a mainstream.
- 3:40Yes, of course.
- 3:40Now we've got to look at the way that people have been investing in gold.
- 3:45I mean, you can buy an ingot of gold and use it as a paperweight or just look at it
- 3:49and rub
- 3:49it and just generally enjoy the beauty of it.
- 3:53But that's very old school.
- 3:55What we have to look at now is things like ETFs, for example.
- 3:59But you're going to go through the ways to invest in gold and how you're advising
- 4:04your clients, please, Andre.
- 4:06Yeah, so the way we invest, I think you can look at one.
- 4:08One of two ways, either you buy in gold as an age or insurance premium,
- 4:15and then you can either buy physical gold, Krugerrands, or
- 4:20ETF that you get exposure to the gold price.
- 4:23The other more aggressive option is to buy gold companies or companies that produce
- 4:30gold,
- 4:32which earn a dividend from,
- 4:32but the reason why that is more aggressive is because the costs are fixed.
- 4:38and they leverage up so they will loan money from the bank and then do more
- 4:45operations to get more money
- 4:47or more gold from the ground.
- 4:47So if the gold price goes up with 5%, typically the share price will go up 10 or
- 4:5315%.
- 4:55But the other way around is also true, gold price drops, the share price drop
- 4:59dramatically.
- 5:01So gold shares on average are three times
- 5:02more volatile than just the general equity fund or shares or the JSE
- 5:09for that matter.
- 5:11So it's really an aggressive play if you go that route.
- 5:14And then even within gold companies, you really need to know what you're doing.
- 5:17Anglo gold is more the old school one.
- 5:20And if you look at a conservatively run and if you, and that's not highly priced,
- 5:27you look at some left field option,
- 5:29DRD gold, they take money.
- 5:30sorry, gold from dumps and recycle that and clean it up and take lower grade gold
- 5:36from that.
- 5:38So it's very different.
- 5:40And then how many gold has been, you've got the gold play, but they're also taking
- 5:44money and reinvesting it in copper mines.
- 5:46So not all gold are pure gold, so pure gold play.
- 5:48So you really need to know what you're doing.
- 5:49What about Sibania?
- 5:50You didn't mention Sibania.
- 5:51Is that something that you wouldn't recommend?
- 5:55Is that something that you've looked at?
- 5:57So, yeah, most of our clients...
- 6:00funds are invested in unit trust funds that that manager decides which to buy and
- 6:06with not um but i i like to track the
- 6:08the companies just for interest sake also so sibania have been intriguing me for a
- 6:14very long time because i really like neil ferneman which
- 6:16they used to run the company for a long while but sebanya basically has a big
- 6:20platinum play
- 6:22also and platinum is very interesting because platinum prices have gone up a lot
- 6:27and sebanya has a lot of
- 6:29exposure to platinum The tricky thing with platinum though is before the recent run
- 6:34in the platinum price,
- 6:36which was not driven by the same drivers that has driven the gold price.
- 6:39Platinum was really a recovery from an all fall down scenario where people thought
- 6:45the industrial
- 6:47or internal combustion engine will just completely disappear over time and be
- 6:52replaced by
- 6:52electric cars.
- 6:53That has not been really the case.
- 6:55There's a demand for a hybrid.
- 6:57kind of car which uses both and for that you also still need platinum in the car,
- 7:04in the engine,
- 7:06while a full electric car doesn't need platinum at all.
- 7:08So almost 60% of platinum mines was running at a loss and now at today's price
- 7:14around 50%
- 7:16of platinum prices are running at a loss.
- 7:18So it was really just a recovery and there might be still legs in that,
- 7:21but it's not the same kind of strategy or reasons that you would buy gold.
- 7:27No, just to finish our gold share discussion, gold shares are very,
- 7:32very highly geared to the gold price when it goes up and when it goes down.
- 7:37And I've always thought that if you see the gold shares not performing as well as
- 7:42the gold prices,
- 7:44that the gold shares, the gold miners tend to know what's going on.
- 7:47That's just sort of an old school theory.
- 7:50So time to get out of gold if the gold shares don't confirm.
- 7:54the rise in the gold price.
- 7:55That's just an aside.
- 7:56And that is not a recommendation for your clients, Andre.
- 8:00The other thing is very finally, is that somebody said to me, the South African
- 8:06gold miners, for example,
- 8:08are making so much money, and they're not going out and buying other gold mines.
- 8:11They're not expanding like they used to and spend all the money recklessly.
- 8:17So there may be some dividends or even special dividends coming up.
- 8:21But again, Again that's pure speculation.
- 8:23ETFs and funds versus general equity funds.
- 8:25What would you do in the publicly traded funds that are available?
- 8:31And there are so many of them.
- 8:33So I would just stick to a very well run general equity fund manager that has
- 8:39proven to outperform the JSC over time.
- 8:41Because if you buy the top 40 or just the JSC as a whole now, you're almost getting
- 8:4825% in gold,
- 8:50the weighting that the gold shares as.
- 8:51But Getting in and out of that, I can't do that.
- 8:53I don't have the expertise to get in and out of gold.
- 8:56If you buy a pure gold fund, limit that to a certain percentage, but don't try to get
- 9:03in and out and you're in for the long run.
- 9:05If you use a couple of general equity funds, they will provide you with, let's
- 9:08say,
- 9:0810 or more percent gold in that NL, and they will know which ones to buy and which
- 9:15ones,
- 9:15as fiscal prudence, will reinvest or pay out the money they make in dividends.
- 9:21But yeah, so for the midway kind of run of the mill portfolio,
- 9:27I would recommend a general equity fund manager.
- 9:30And if you're a bit more concerned about World War III or some other things, then
- 9:36add a bit extra.
- 9:38Yeah, one mustn't get caught up in it too much.
- 9:39If you're not in gold now, don't get into it simply because of the fear of missing
- 9:44out.
- 9:45Go with your financial advisor's advice.
- 9:47Do some research yourself and see what's happened.
- 9:50Consider that this thing has quadrupled in a decade,
- 9:54and it's doubled since early March 2022, I think it was, whatever.
- 9:59You can look at the graphs yourself.
- 10:01But the other thing is, it's not just an inflation hedge or a geopolitical hedge
- 10:07anymore.
- 10:09It's actually a serious asset class that people are taking seriously and using as a
- 10:14valid part of their
- 10:16portfolio construction.
- 10:18Yes, so I think the tide has shifted really, if you understand global
- 10:22economics.
- 10:24So I used to think about gold just as an insurance or, you know, a hedge.
- 10:27But if you look at China, was the biggest buyer of gold the past, let's say, year.
- 10:33The economics was weaponized after Russia invaded Ukraine.
- 10:38Russia was sanctioned and they couldn't access the foreign assets, which included
- 10:43specifically U.S.
- 10:45assets.
- 10:47So now they're sitting and saying, all right, we have U.S.
- 10:47treasuries or bonds on our balance sheet, but what if we can't access that?
- 10:51That's a problem.
- 10:53It's not risk-free anymore.
- 10:54So let's buy gold that we can trade with other partners that has been a currency in
- 11:01previous world
- 11:03wars and crises.
- 11:05So now China, if you look at it, the data I got is they only have 8%
- 11:08of the foreign reserves in gold, while a country like Germany or other developed
- 11:13market countries...
- 11:15countries as a up to 70%.
- 11:17So they've got a long way still to sell down some of the US assets, US bonds, and
- 11:22buy gold.
- 11:24And we don't really know what we know from China.
- 11:26Their data is sometimes vague, but I think they still have a lot of buying to do.
- 11:33And the way the US debt is still very high and interest rates won't come down to 0%
- 11:39or 1%
- 11:41like we used to, that creates a scenario where the globe is also shifting a little
- 11:46bit away from U.S.
- 11:48And that creates a demand for other currencies.
- 11:50But what are you going to buy now?
- 11:52Are you going to buy euros, yen?
- 11:54The world is not going to buy renminbi, you know, on a whole.
- 12:00So that creates a demand for gold.
- 12:01So I think gold has a long-term play in your portfolio.
- 12:05But again, don't buy because you're greedy or FOMO. Yeah,
- 12:09just see it as a part of your diversified portfolio.
- 12:12Good advice, Andre.
- 12:13Now, the headline of your article that you kindly sent me and what this podcast has
- 12:20been based on is, will gold continue to shine?
- 12:22So I've got to pin you down now.
- 12:24It went to nearly 4,400 last week.
- 12:25It came down to 4,250 after that.
- 12:29It's around about 4,300 as we pre-record.
- 12:33Is it going to continue to shine?
- 12:36Yeah, I think long term, yes.
- 12:39Within a week, you might go down 10%.
- 12:42I don't know.
- 12:43Okay, Andre, very conservatively finished.
- 12:46Well done.
