- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:23Hello everyone, welcome to the show.
- 0:25In this episode today I want to talk about an idea that I've
- 0:28been putting into action a lot since the beginning of the year.
- 0:31And it's very connected to my mantra for 2026, which is finish
- 0:36line. It's all about getting projects
- 0:39across the finish line, about not procrastinating on things,
- 0:43about the sort of just do it energy.
- 0:47And today the topic is about making the first move.
- 0:52I've been having this conversation with a lot of my
- 0:55one-on-one coaching clients. Many of these folks are people
- 0:58who are managing other people. They either have a team or
- 1:02they're a founder of their company or they're at a level of
- 1:05leadership where they have a lot of responsibility on their
- 1:07shoulders. And it's something that can
- 1:09happen in those situations. A little bit of analysis
- 1:13paralysis as we could call it. There's just so much to consider
- 1:17when you have a lot going on. And this is true for anybody who
- 1:20has a lot on their plate, no matter what their role is, what
- 1:23their work is. But this analysis paralysis can
- 1:26keep us out of action. It creates inaction.
- 1:32We're in our heads. It can also have us making
- 1:35assumptions or getting stuck in beliefs about things that might
- 1:38not even be true. So this idea of making the first
- 1:43move, it's really about assertiveness.
- 1:47It's about getting out of your head and getting into motion.
- 1:50And the more that I've been thinking about this, the more I
- 1:53find areas in life to apply this idea.
- 1:56You can apply this idea to telling somebody how you feel.
- 2:00Maybe it's in a platonic relationship where you want to
- 2:03set the record straight or you want to create an agreement of
- 2:06some kind. Maybe it's in a romantic
- 2:08situation and you're waiting for somebody to make the first move.
- 2:11Why wouldn't you just make it? You know we all create these
- 2:14rules for a situation when it could really just be simple.
- 2:19Say how you feel and take the initiative.
- 2:22You can also apply this rule to a work setting.
- 2:25How many times do we hold back when we know we have something
- 2:27valuable to offer in a work setting?
- 2:29It happens all the time. And why not just make the first
- 2:32move? For example, give your input in
- 2:35a meeting. Say what you want to say to a
- 2:38colleague in a productive, compassionate way.
- 2:40Of course, make it known that you want your name thrown into
- 2:45the ring for a promotion. This could apply to a marriage.
- 2:50You could make the first move more often.
- 2:52You could apologize first. You could take ownership of
- 2:55something first. You could step up and do the
- 2:57work first, whether it's taking out the trash or doing the
- 2:59dishes or just making an appointment that you both been
- 3:02meaning to make. There's so many areas of our
- 3:05life where we could be more assertive, we could be more
- 3:08direct, and we could make that first move.
- 3:12And the reason I think this is important is because
- 3:15assertiveness is a key skill to not only being a great leader,
- 3:21but also creating life you want. Assertiveness leads to action
- 3:26and action beats anxiety. Ultimately, this kind of level
- 3:31headed assertiveness can cut out a lot of the drama or problem
- 3:34energy in our lives. It also helps us get a lot more
- 3:38done in a shorter amount of time.
- 3:41And as one of my mentors says, success loves speed.
- 3:46There's so many areas where we could stop dragging our feet.
- 3:49We could stop putting things off and remove some of the drag on.
- 3:53What we could create for ourselves.
- 3:56And what so many people do, oftentimes just habitually, is
- 4:00instead of taking action and making the first move, they'll
- 4:03do other things instead. They'll do other things instead.
- 4:09They'll do things like complaining or bitching or
- 4:13making excuses or blaming other people for why they can't make
- 4:16stuff happen in their life. They'll choose other projects.
- 4:20They'll do menial tasks instead of important tasks.
- 4:24They'll scroll. They'll choose to think about
- 4:29something that is a little bit easier instead of doing the
- 4:32heavier lift. It's really common.
- 4:34There are so many ways that we avoid making the first move and
- 4:39another thing that gets in the way of us making the first move
- 4:43is our own expectations. We have so many expectations of
- 4:48things in our life and especially of other people.
- 4:50We expect other people to step up and do the work first.
- 4:54We expect somebody else to say how they feel first.
- 4:57In a relationship, we have expectations of our partner and
- 5:01what they should be doing in the House.
- 5:03We have expectations of our colleagues and the amount of
- 5:06work that they should be doing on a project or on your team.
- 5:09Our own expectations of so many different things get in the way
- 5:13of us creating momentum in our lives.
- 5:16Do you see how important this is?
- 5:19Our own expectations are standing in the way of us
- 5:22creating momentum in our life. Damn, when I really started to
- 5:26get that, it made me very eager to start making the first move.
- 5:31And it really does create a change.
- 5:34Do you want to get healthier? Make the first move don't wait
- 5:38for somebody to tell you what to do.
- 5:40Go out and find the information you need or go out and hire the
- 5:43person that you feel like you need to help you.
- 5:46Do you want to have more experiences in your life?
- 5:49Then book the travel don't wait for someone else to inspire you
- 5:53to go travel. Pick a place on the map and go
- 5:56there. You want a new job, start
- 5:59finding ways for you to create opportunity in your life,
- 6:03whether it's getting a promotion, maybe it's working in
- 6:07a different industry, it's interviewing, it's pumping up
- 6:11your CV, whatever it might be. But it all comes down to that
- 6:14idea of making the first move, being assertive.
- 6:18Now, I'm not saying there's not a time and place for being
- 6:21thoughtful and taking time with decisions or the action that you
- 6:26think you should take. Of course there's a time and
- 6:28place for that, but it's way less time than you think you
- 6:32need. Most often we tell ourselves
- 6:35that we aren't making a move because we just need to think
- 6:37about it, or we just need to figure it out a little bit, or
- 6:40we need to wait for the right time.
- 6:42But the reality is we already know what we need to do, we just
- 6:45aren't doing it. So this episode is a bit of a
- 6:50call to action. And the call is to get out into
- 6:54your life and start making those first moves.
- 6:57Give the compliments. Tell people they're doing a
- 7:00great job. Be direct with your boss, take
- 7:03initiative in your home, step up and take some of the load off of
- 7:06your partner. Call the people who need to be
- 7:08called. Make the decisions that you've
- 7:11been putting off. Make the first move and see what
- 7:15unfolds for you. I bet that you're going to feel
- 7:19a lot more momentum in the next couple of weeks if you put this
- 7:22practice into place. I know that this is true for
- 7:26myself. I've certainly been in
- 7:28situations where I haven't been making the first move, where
- 7:31I've been procrastinating or making excuses.
- 7:34I've been there myself. It's a human thing that we do.
- 7:38But when you have this awareness that assertiveness can be an
- 7:42asset, it's really hard to ignore it.
- 7:44And when you have the knowledge and you're not moving on it, at
- 7:48that point, it's kind of on you. So today is Monday.
- 7:52And for the rest of this week, my challenge to you is to start
- 7:55looking at different areas where you could start to make the
- 7:58first move and see what kind of momentum you can create for
- 8:01yourself. I guarantee it's going to start
- 8:03getting really exciting for you. So thank you for being here and
