- 0:06Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:10Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Blazarre from Lazarre. Everybody nailed it joined as always buy
- 0:16Speaker 2: our bar Gap. Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bar
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's a classic tune up game, and we're gonna win
- 0:25Speaker 2: by one hundred. We're gonna feel good about ourselves doing it.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Maybe the Jets press some buttons or pull some levers
- 0:32Speaker 2: that have given the Patriots some issues, and so you
- 0:34Speaker 2: get practice, live in game practice against these things. They
- 0:39Speaker 2: played two division games at the end of the year
- 0:40Speaker 2: in twenty eighteen. They got right, They got their stuff
- 0:43Speaker 2: figured out. It completely flipped the season from the Miami
- 0:46Speaker 2: miracle in the Pittsburgh lost to a super Bowl team.
- 0:52Speaker 2: They did win by one hundred, so I was right
- 0:55Speaker 2: about that, and it was I don't know if I
- 0:58Speaker 2: can call that a tuneup game, though, Alex. I don't
- 1:01Speaker 2: know if the Jets offered enough resistance to truly call
- 1:04Speaker 2: that a tune up game, like a tune up game
- 1:07Speaker 2: against Miami. I think they might get that. They might
- 1:10Speaker 2: get that.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I think in some sense it was like you get
- 1:13Speaker 1: to rep the live two minute drill I'd consider that
- 1:15Speaker 1: like a tune up moment kind of thing.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, I thought, you know, we'll get
- 1:20Speaker 2: into it. But the the Efton Chishm catch against the
- 1:24Speaker 2: Cover zero bullets. Cover zero has been giving the Patriots
- 1:27Speaker 2: a little bit of problems offensively. It's the only coverage
- 1:31Speaker 2: that Drake May has a negative EPA against this season
- 1:35Speaker 2: is Cover zero. So to see them come up with
- 1:37Speaker 2: an answer to that, even though it was not necessarily
- 1:40Speaker 2: a great defense that they were answering against, but those
- 1:44Speaker 2: types of things were what we were looking for.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So I still think it's a tune up game. Maybe
- 1:48Speaker 1: a different kind of tune up game, but I still
- 1:49Speaker 1: think it's a tune up.
- 1:50Speaker 2: All right, I'm for it. We are gonna get a
- 1:52Speaker 2: little bit into this Jets game. I'm not gonna sit
- 1:55Speaker 2: here and pretend that there's a million things to talk
- 1:57Speaker 2: about coming off to win over the Jets, but we're
- 2:00Speaker 2: going to talk a little bit about it. We'll do
- 2:02Speaker 2: some good and bads don't really have much that got
- 2:05Speaker 2: them beat in this game, so we'll talk about that.
- 2:08Speaker 2: We'll talk about playoff scenarios. Drake May's MVP case a
- 2:13Speaker 2: little bit of a Dolphins preview as well in the
- 2:16Speaker 2: second hour, because I do think the Dolphins are kind
- 2:19Speaker 2: of frisky, Like the Dolphins to me are exactly what
- 2:24Speaker 2: when you think about playing spoiler, Like the Dolphins are
- 2:27Speaker 2: kind of one of those types of teams right now
- 2:29Speaker 2: that is playing spoiler. I mean, they just beat Tampa
- 2:31Speaker 2: Bay in a game Tampa Bay needed, so they can't
- 2:35Speaker 2: play spoiler really quickly. Before we get rolling on this
- 2:38Speaker 2: Jets recap, I know we are probably gonna get some
- 2:42Speaker 2: questions about the Stefon Digg situation, where we're not going
- 2:45Speaker 2: to touch that. The team has issued a statement. We're
- 2:48Speaker 2: going to leave it at that for now. But I
- 2:51Speaker 2: wanted to get that out of way because I don't
- 2:52Speaker 2: want people to sit here and listen for two hours
- 2:55Speaker 2: and expect to hear about it. So that's all I
- 2:58Speaker 2: can say about that right now. But to the Jets,
- 3:01Speaker 2: I understand that there's I don't want to overanalyze a
- 3:07Speaker 2: game like that. The Patriots I think do deserve credit though,
- 3:11Speaker 2: Alex for having their eye on the ball, for being
- 3:16Speaker 2: you know, locked in for a game that was against
- 3:19Speaker 2: a much weaker opponent that has also taken a lot
- 3:23Speaker 2: of the guys that they even have on the roster
- 3:25Speaker 2: that are talented off the field. You know, Garrett Wilson
- 3:28Speaker 2: did not play in this game. Of course, sass Gardner
- 3:30Speaker 2: and Quentin Williams are playing for other teams, so they
- 3:33Speaker 2: didn't play for this in this game either for the Jets.
- 3:35Speaker 2: But I've seen this happen over the last couple of
- 3:39Speaker 2: weeks across the league that you know, Cleveland beats Pittsburgh,
- 3:42Speaker 2: the Broncos get pushed to the brink by Ola Duncan
- 3:47Speaker 2: in the third string quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs,
- 3:50Speaker 2: And you know, there are games against bad teams where
- 3:53Speaker 2: good teams have left the door open and kind of
- 3:57Speaker 2: allowed them to themselves to be pushed to the limit.
- 4:00Speaker 2: There the Falcons beating the Rams on Monday Night. It happens.
- 4:05Speaker 2: It happens. Now. This Jets team, I don't think is
- 4:07Speaker 2: as good as those teams were in terms of opponents.
- 4:11Speaker 2: But this is what you wanted to see. You wanted
- 4:14Speaker 2: to see the Patriots leave, no doubt. You wanted to
- 4:17Speaker 2: see them get up to a big lead and coast
- 4:20Speaker 2: in the second half, and they were able to do that.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So I do think they deserve a little bit of credit,
- 4:24Speaker 2: not trying to make too much out of it, but
- 4:26Speaker 2: a little bit of credit for the fact that they dominated.
- 4:31Speaker 2: They dominated a bad team. And you can't say that
- 4:33Speaker 2: about everybody across the league this week.
- 4:35Speaker 1: No, not everybody beat the Jets forty two to ten
- 4:37Speaker 1: this year, right, Falcons lost to him, beat the Rams.
- 4:40Speaker 3: So no, I.
- 4:43Speaker 1: It felt like the good old days, right when the
- 4:45Speaker 1: Patriots were on their role. That's what it looked like
- 4:47Speaker 1: when they beat the Jets. That's what it should look
- 4:49Speaker 1: like when a good team beats a bad team. And
- 4:51Speaker 1: they made the gap look like it should look you
- 4:55Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, Like, yep, you don't want them
- 4:57Speaker 1: to have to struggle through and win that game. And
- 5:00Speaker 1: you know, going into it, there were some people talking
- 5:01Speaker 1: about that and you know, all right, well, they have
- 5:04Speaker 1: all these injuries. Are they going to maybe have to
- 5:06Speaker 1: really eke this one out? Nope, win in blue doors
- 5:09Speaker 1: and that that's the sign of a good team.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Yeah. And the other element of this just big picture
- 5:13Speaker 2: that I think is relevant. It seems to me now
- 5:18Speaker 2: with Drake May and with Mike Rabel, they have a
- 5:22Speaker 2: foundation or an infrastructure to take advantage of bad football
- 5:26Speaker 2: for a long time like potentially you know, a very
- 5:29Speaker 2: long time here, you know, in terms of NFL years.
- 5:32Speaker 2: So they are going to clean up on this type
- 5:35Speaker 2: of competition with these two people, you know, as long
- 5:37Speaker 2: as Drake may is upright and Mike Rabel's on the sideline.
- 5:40Speaker 2: And that has a very Brady Belichick feel to it
- 5:43Speaker 2: as well, right where every year they're not going to get,
- 5:47Speaker 2: you know, a schedule that maybe sets up as well
- 5:49Speaker 2: as this one did, but they're still going to have
- 5:52Speaker 2: a handful of games that they really should take care
- 5:56Speaker 2: of business in. And it just feels like that they
- 5:59Speaker 2: are more than and you know, shown that they've checked
- 6:02Speaker 2: that box and that's the league, like you could win
- 6:06Speaker 2: maybe not ten games or eleven games like they have
- 6:09Speaker 2: this year like that, but at least half a dozen,
- 6:12Speaker 2: right and once you get to that point, now you're
- 6:14Speaker 2: only going five hundred and the rest of them to
- 6:17Speaker 2: make the playoffs, you know. So I think that there's
- 6:20Speaker 2: a big part of that as well, that they've really
- 6:22Speaker 2: shown all year long, other than you know, the opener
- 6:25Speaker 2: against the Raiders, that they are fully equipped now to
- 6:28Speaker 2: take advantage of bad football and kind of clean up
- 6:30Speaker 2: on the jets of their schedules and things like that.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's I mean, Mike, We're able talked about
- 6:36Speaker 1: it in that opening press conference. Take advantage of bad football,
- 6:39Speaker 1: which which they've done. And he also mentioned winning the
- 6:42Speaker 1: division we should mention, which they did a year one
- 6:44Speaker 1: after he said that, which is crazy.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely all right, So a couple of just things
- 6:50Speaker 2: I wanted to go over in this game. More of
- 6:51Speaker 2: this stuff is I try to keep it more big
- 6:54Speaker 2: picture in terms of looking ahead to the playoffs and
- 6:57Speaker 2: not necessarily comparing it to the Jets, but comparing to
- 7:00Speaker 2: the level of competition that the Patriots might face in
- 7:03Speaker 2: a couple of weeks here. So we'll just start with Drake.
- 7:07Speaker 2: May you know, obviously individually in this game, one of
- 7:10Speaker 2: the better games in terms of quarterback efficiency that we've
- 7:14Speaker 2: seen in the league in the last like ten years,
- 7:17Speaker 2: which is kind of crazy. You know, highest single game
- 7:20Speaker 2: QBR since they started tracking the stats back in two
- 7:23Speaker 2: thousand and six, so that's twenty years, twenty seasons highest
- 7:28Speaker 2: or second highest excuse me, epa game in the last
- 7:31Speaker 2: ten seasons. I think what stands out to me though
- 7:34Speaker 2: the most about it. And you can go through all
- 7:36Speaker 2: the stats and how good he was in this game
- 7:39Speaker 2: is just how in control he is at this point.
- 7:42Speaker 2: He doesn't seem rattled by anything, he doesn't seem confused
- 7:46Speaker 2: by anything, his pre snap process and his ability to
- 7:50Speaker 2: reacting's post snap as well. I thought that the most
- 7:53Speaker 2: one of the most telling plays was actually not a throw.
- 7:56Speaker 2: It was one of his scrambles, the fourth down scramble.
- 7:59Speaker 2: The Jets ran a trap coverage where they tried to
- 8:02Speaker 2: trap him into throwing a little stick or hook route
- 8:05Speaker 2: to Stefan Diggs in the slot, and nine out of
- 8:08Speaker 2: ten quarterbacks throw like a pick six in that situation,
- 8:11Speaker 2: like the corner carries Kyle Williams initially, then he falls
- 8:15Speaker 2: off the Kyle Williams vertical route and jumps the underneath route,
- 8:19Speaker 2: and Drake May goes to throw it to Stefon Diggs
- 8:22Speaker 2: kind of pumps and then pulls it down and then
- 8:25Speaker 2: is like, nope, you know, can't throw it there, and
- 8:27Speaker 2: then scrambles for a first down. That's the type of
- 8:30Speaker 2: things that you see when the quarterback is really seeing
- 8:33Speaker 2: it well and really processing information well and just kind
- 8:36Speaker 2: of in complete control, and then you have the element
- 8:39Speaker 2: of the now. He has the ability to scramble when
- 8:42Speaker 2: things aren't there. Of course, you know, the extended play
- 8:45Speaker 2: or the scrambled drill play to Stefan Diggs earlier in
- 8:48Speaker 2: the game was also fantastic in that regard. But Drake
- 8:51Speaker 2: May just looking like a cool customer back there, just unfazed,
- 8:56Speaker 2: you know, sees the field extremely well, has a full
- 9:01Speaker 2: grasp of this Josh McDaniel's offense, which I think is
- 9:05Speaker 2: incredible for a twenty three year old, a guy that's
- 9:08Speaker 2: in the second season in the league to be making
- 9:10Speaker 2: checks and making mike calls, and protection schemes and checking
- 9:15Speaker 2: in and out of plays, reading coverage, like all these
- 9:18Speaker 2: different things that Josh McDaniels puts on the quarterback. Drake
- 9:22Speaker 2: May is excelling in all those areas. I don't think
- 9:25Speaker 2: a lot of twenty three year old quarterbacks are doing
- 9:27Speaker 2: that across the league.
- 9:28Speaker 1: No, and he did it in a game where you know,
- 9:29Speaker 1: he's down some starting offensive line and he's working with
- 9:31Speaker 1: some receivers he's a little less familiar with, like the
- 9:34Speaker 1: first catch Byfton Chisholm, where they bring the blitz, he
- 9:37Speaker 1: resets the protection, throws hot to a guy. I think
- 9:39Speaker 1: that was his first career in game pass defton Chisholm.
- 9:43Speaker 2: First career catch by Chisholm for sure, and so.
- 9:46Speaker 1: To kind of have that wherewithal and have that trust, yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 1: was impressive.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah. So I think that you know, that's to me
- 9:52Speaker 2: where this is going to go for Drake May and
- 9:55Speaker 2: the playoffs is if he continues to show this kind
- 9:59Speaker 2: of grasp of the system that he's in, he's going
- 10:03Speaker 2: to be tough to beat. And that's the biggest difference
- 10:07Speaker 2: to me. You get a lot of people that are
- 10:10Speaker 2: kind of talking about the MVP and why Drake Mays
- 10:13Speaker 2: taking such a major leap in the second season compared
- 10:17Speaker 2: to his rookie season. I think the biggest reason why
- 10:19Speaker 2: is he's gotten so much better at operating with instructure
- 10:23Speaker 2: of the system, which takes out a lot of the
- 10:26Speaker 2: volatility of his play because when you're trying to just
- 10:29Speaker 2: kind of play in playground mode and make things happen,
- 10:33Speaker 2: like he was forced to do a lot his rookie season,
- 10:36Speaker 2: that's when the turnovers happened because you're pressing and you're
- 10:38Speaker 2: trying to do too much. So when you allow sort
- 10:41Speaker 2: of the system and allow the scheme to give you
- 10:46Speaker 2: easy answers to the test or clear concise answers to
- 10:50Speaker 2: the test. That is why he's now down near the
- 10:55Speaker 2: middle of the pack in turnover worthy play rate instead
- 10:58Speaker 2: of top of the league and turnover where they play rate,
- 11:00Speaker 2: despite the fact that he's you know, third in the
- 11:02Speaker 2: league in air yards per target. So he's throwing the
- 11:05Speaker 2: ball down the field and he's pressing tight windows and
- 11:08Speaker 2: things like that, and the turnovers have come way down,
- 11:11Speaker 2: but the big time plays are still there. And I think,
- 11:14Speaker 2: to me, is is all about how he operates in
- 11:17Speaker 2: the system. So if they keep him in this sort
- 11:20Speaker 2: of groove that he's in, then I think that they're
- 11:23Speaker 2: going to be a tough out in the playoffs, and
- 11:25Speaker 2: that's the hope. And you see that. You know, we
- 11:28Speaker 2: can talk a little bit more about sort of the
- 11:29Speaker 2: rest of the league and a little bit, but you
- 11:31Speaker 2: see that. I think what's going on in Buffalo right
- 11:34Speaker 2: now that Josh Allen is a little bit of that.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Like it's too much Allen with the Superman cape on right,
- 11:39Speaker 2: Like it's not enough easy layups, you know, schemed open
- 11:43Speaker 2: receivers or things like that. He's he's pressing and he's
- 11:47Speaker 2: trying to do a little bit too much and his
- 11:49Speaker 2: play is going up and down as a result. So
- 11:52Speaker 2: that's Drake May. The other thing that I thought was
- 11:55Speaker 2: really good to see in this game and has been
- 11:58Speaker 2: for the last couple of weeks, is just the play
- 12:00Speaker 2: of Ramondre Stevenson. I just think that he's kind of
- 12:03Speaker 2: on kind of like a three game heater at this point.
- 12:06Speaker 2: It's not volume necessarily all the time with him at
- 12:09Speaker 2: the moment, but he's doing it all, you know, pat
- 12:12Speaker 2: catching the ball out of the backfield, running the ball, blocking.
- 12:16Speaker 2: They're using him now as sort of like a chess
- 12:18Speaker 2: piece with all the motions and things like that they
- 12:20Speaker 2: were doing last week against the Jets. You're now really
- 12:24Speaker 2: starting to see the combination of Stevenson and Henderson and
- 12:28Speaker 2: what these two guys can be together. Yeah.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I just think like this is as good as Ramondre's looked.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And can you say two years I think going back
- 12:35Speaker 1: really just started the twenty twenty four season. I even
- 12:37Speaker 1: think at the start of this year obviously had the
- 12:39Speaker 1: fumble issues, right, Yeah, but this is the player he
- 12:42Speaker 1: can be. And I know I've gotten some heat. People
- 12:44Speaker 1: have been annoyed how much I've kind of been like, no,
- 12:46Speaker 1: he needs to be a part of the offense. Well,
- 12:48Speaker 1: this is why, because when he's on, this is the
- 12:50Speaker 1: guy he can be. And we've talked to you don't
- 12:53Speaker 1: want Trayvon Henderson to be that workhorse back that twenty
- 12:56Speaker 1: five touch a game players. So getting this version for
- 13:00Speaker 1: Mondrix sevens and as Trevion Henderson continues to figure things
- 13:02Speaker 1: out and as he continues to play better is so
- 13:05Speaker 1: so important because it just allows it adds another dimension
- 13:08Speaker 1: on offense. And the biggest thing, I think one of
- 13:11Speaker 1: the biggest things you can say about the Patriots offense
- 13:13Speaker 1: right now. As good as Drake May has been, and
- 13:15Speaker 1: to your point about Josh Allen, a lot of these teams,
- 13:19Speaker 1: you know, a lot of teams in the NFL, they'll
- 13:21Speaker 1: find something that works offensively and they'll just lean all
- 13:23Speaker 1: the way into it. And sometimes that work, but sometimes,
- 13:26Speaker 1: especially late in the year, like you get a little predictable,
- 13:30Speaker 1: the Patriots offense is stayed very multiple even with all
- 13:33Speaker 1: the success that Drake May has had, which is a
- 13:35Speaker 1: lot of credit to Josh McDaniels. Having romondre Stevenson play
- 13:38Speaker 1: the way he is only adds another element. The defenses
- 13:41Speaker 1: have to worry about especially now, I don't know. You
- 13:43Speaker 1: probably have the exact number. I don't. The last couple
- 13:46Speaker 1: of weeks, I feel like we start to see a
- 13:47Speaker 1: lot more to running back sets yep, which which really
- 13:51Speaker 1: strains the defense.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, they're definitely doing that more and it's going
- 13:55Speaker 2: to continue now, I think more and more in terms
- 13:57Speaker 2: of we'll get to the personnel groupings in this game
- 14:00Speaker 2: in a second. It's going to continue more and more
- 14:03Speaker 2: now than Matt Collins is not available that they're going
- 14:06Speaker 2: to start to You're going to see some unique formations,
- 14:09Speaker 2: unique personnel groupings as a way to sort of recreate
- 14:13Speaker 2: what they're losing with Matt Collins because I don't think
- 14:15Speaker 2: they have an exact match with his size, and then
- 14:18Speaker 2: also the.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Ability to stretch the field as a receiver they don't.
- 14:22Speaker 1: It's going to be multiple players that are going to happen,
- 14:26Speaker 1: which is what.
- 14:26Speaker 2: You saw in this game. One more point on the
- 14:28Speaker 2: remondra thing, and then we can unpack that a little
- 14:30Speaker 2: bit in terms of the personnel groupings, the stuff that
- 14:34Speaker 2: they were doing with Remondrae in this game by putting
- 14:37Speaker 2: him in motion before the snap, whether it was starting
- 14:40Speaker 2: him out wide, and then motioning him into the backfield.
- 14:43Speaker 2: They created two explosive plays with doing that, and that
- 14:46Speaker 2: was like a chess versus Checkers moment for me where
- 14:49Speaker 2: Remondre first time they motion him into the backfield and
- 14:54Speaker 2: they run him on that deep corner route out of
- 14:56Speaker 2: the backfield, and the Jets checked to a blitz up
- 14:59Speaker 2: the middle with their linebacker and they had their end
- 15:01Speaker 2: dropout on Ramondre Stevenson. So now you have a three
- 15:04Speaker 2: hundred pound defensive end trying to cover Ramandra Stevenson down
- 15:09Speaker 2: the field on a vertical route. And you know how
- 15:11Speaker 2: that went for the Jets. That was just not going
- 15:13Speaker 2: to be a foot race he was going to win.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Then later on in the game, they motioned Remondre back
- 15:18Speaker 2: in the backfield again from out wide, you know, split
- 15:20Speaker 2: them out, motioned them back inside. And when they motioned
- 15:23Speaker 2: them back inside this time, the Jets said, well, we're
- 15:25Speaker 2: not going to get stuck with our defensive end on
- 15:27Speaker 2: him again, so we're going to keep the linebacker on him.
- 15:30Speaker 2: So what the Patriots do is they have the linebacker
- 15:32Speaker 2: in the box. He's on Ramandre Stevenson. They just have
- 15:35Speaker 2: run a little pick play. They have fton Chisholm picked
- 15:38Speaker 2: the linebacker and Ramondre Stevenson's wide opening the flat for
- 15:41Speaker 2: a seventeen yard gain on third down. So you just
- 15:43Speaker 2: see some of those things that they're just a step ahead.
- 15:46Speaker 2: They're just a step ahead of a team like the Jets,
- 15:48Speaker 2: and Remandre was a big reason why. Yeah, his flexibility
- 15:52Speaker 2: though to you know, is he a blocker, is the receiver?
- 15:55Speaker 2: You know, all those different types of things that he
- 15:57Speaker 2: can do in the passing game are really valued to
- 16:00Speaker 2: the team. You mentioned the personnel groupings. They had eight
- 16:03Speaker 2: different unique personnel groupings in this game, which is a
- 16:07Speaker 2: lot like some teams play the whole game and like
- 16:09Speaker 2: two personnel groupings, and the Patriots ran eight personnel groupings
- 16:14Speaker 2: in this game. It was a combination of things. They
- 16:17Speaker 2: had multiple tight ends. They had multiple backs, whether it's
- 16:20Speaker 2: two back pony with Stevenson and Henderson or Westover as
- 16:24Speaker 2: the full back in the backfield. They had the jumbo
- 16:27Speaker 2: package with their Munford as the sixth offensive lineman. They
- 16:30Speaker 2: had a bunch of packages on the goal line where
- 16:34Speaker 2: they were basically no wide receivers on the field and
- 16:37Speaker 2: it was just two tight ends, two backs, and they
- 16:41Speaker 2: or Munford I think our guy John Critis calls that
- 16:44Speaker 2: twenty two rhino. Yeah, I think that's what he likes
- 16:46Speaker 2: to call it. So there's all sorts of different combinations
- 16:50Speaker 2: that they had in this game. But I do think
- 16:52Speaker 2: that without Hollins, they're put into a position where they
- 16:57Speaker 2: don't really have another six foot four, two twenty pounds
- 17:01Speaker 2: wide receiver that can sort of do a lot of
- 17:04Speaker 2: things that like a flex or moved tight end can
- 17:07Speaker 2: do in the run game. So they're going to be bigger,
- 17:10Speaker 2: Like they're gonna put two tight ends on the field
- 17:12Speaker 2: more often with Henry and Hooper, they're going to put
- 17:15Speaker 2: six offensive linemen on the field more often. And that's
- 17:19Speaker 2: how they're going to try to do this moving forward.
- 17:22Speaker 2: You know, you obviously take a little bit of that
- 17:25Speaker 2: downfield explosive element off the field with Hollins compared to
- 17:29Speaker 2: those types of packages, but you still should be able
- 17:32Speaker 2: to get to some of the run in play action
- 17:34Speaker 2: stuff that they want to get to out of those looks.
- 17:37Speaker 2: But McDaniel's is, like, you know, some of this was
- 17:39Speaker 2: like hockey lines right where they're just running three four
- 17:43Speaker 2: guys off the field, you know at a time, and
- 17:45Speaker 2: going through these personnel groupings. I charted them on their
- 17:49Speaker 2: opening drive. They ran six plays. They ran six different
- 17:52Speaker 2: personnel groupings out of the six.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels in his bag.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean just spinning the dial, So you know
- 17:59Speaker 2: that that is going to be fun to track and
- 18:02Speaker 2: fun to watch moving forward. That does bring me though
- 18:05Speaker 2: to one little thing that I think is worth mentioning,
- 18:08Speaker 2: and that's Chisholm and just how he was used in
- 18:10Speaker 2: this game. You know, his first catch was just a
- 18:13Speaker 2: pure slot route, like that's not a Mac Collins recreation,
- 18:17Speaker 2: but he did do some of the Hollands dirty work
- 18:19Speaker 2: in this game. And then the touchdown catch that he had.
- 18:22Speaker 2: We've seen Mac Collins running that exact route since training camp.
- 18:25Speaker 2: You know that that used to be a Mac Collins route.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So I would say maybe forty five fifty percent of
- 18:31Speaker 2: what Efton Chishm did was trying to fill in for
- 18:33Speaker 2: Mac Collins. The other fifty percent was more pure slot
- 18:36Speaker 2: stuff like we've seen in the past with Patriots slot receivers.
- 18:39Speaker 2: But what did you make of Chisholm, Because I thought
- 18:42Speaker 2: he was pretty good with the opportunities he had.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Yeah, he was solid, and again everybody's gonna need to
- 18:47Speaker 1: step up a little bit. I thought he blocked well too.
- 18:49Speaker 1: That's a big thing when you talk about replacing Mac Collins,
- 18:52Speaker 1: and if he's going to have a little role in
- 18:54Speaker 1: the playoffs, I don't think that would be the worst thing.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Like it.
- 18:57Speaker 1: It's clear we kind of talked about this. I think
- 19:01Speaker 1: was when Booty was hurt or something like a few
- 19:03Speaker 1: weeks ago, when when he might have had a bigger
- 19:06Speaker 1: role about We don't know because he really wasn't with
- 19:09Speaker 1: Drake May in the summer, and where's his chemistry at
- 19:12Speaker 1: with the starting offense, and there's there's no way to know.
- 19:14Speaker 1: That's not saying he hasn't done it, there's no way,
- 19:16Speaker 1: no until we see it. Well, now we've seen it
- 19:18Speaker 1: for relatively you know, decent sample size over the course
- 19:21Speaker 1: in one game, and he looks like he's made significance stride,
- 19:24Speaker 1: So that's a that's a good sign.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Yeah. I thought the the catch that he made, and
- 19:28Speaker 2: I know he got eaten up by the turf monster,
- 19:30Speaker 2: which was unfortunate, but that turf stinks, so I'm not
- 19:33Speaker 2: going to hold that too much against him at midlife.
- 19:36Speaker 2: But the I thought the sort of just awareness of
- 19:40Speaker 2: the blitz and the route that he ran. You know,
- 19:44Speaker 2: on that situation, when he sees the backer coming on
- 19:47Speaker 2: that side, he knows that that's where the ball is going,
- 19:51Speaker 2: like the ball is coming to him, and he knows
- 19:53Speaker 2: that that drake may is hot at that point and
- 19:55Speaker 2: that he's got to get open quickly. So it's kind
- 19:58Speaker 2: of just that you know that awareness that at IQ,
- 20:00Speaker 2: that headiness to understand the blitz is coming on your
- 20:04Speaker 2: side of the field, the ball is coming to you.
- 20:06Speaker 2: And then the corner is sitting inside of him, inside
- 20:09Speaker 2: leverage and covered zero and he's able to beat him
- 20:12Speaker 2: on the slant going across his face, which is hard
- 20:14Speaker 2: to do because he's trying to take away the inside.
- 20:16Speaker 2: So you got to kind of give him a little
- 20:17Speaker 2: something to get him off his spot and then open
- 20:20Speaker 2: up to the inside. And I thought it was a
- 20:22Speaker 2: good route. I thought he uncovered well. I thought he
- 20:24Speaker 2: uncovered quickly, which in the situation was needed, Like you
- 20:27Speaker 2: can't take your time running that kind of route. And
- 20:31Speaker 2: I don't know, he doesn't have the greatest straight line speed,
- 20:34Speaker 2: but he definitely hits a bigger play if he doesn't
- 20:37Speaker 2: get tripped up by the turf. So you know, that
- 20:39Speaker 2: was a really good all around play and I thought
- 20:43Speaker 2: that that was a good step forward for Afton Chisholm.
- 20:45Speaker 2: So we'll see how that continues. A couple more things
- 20:49Speaker 2: on the goods and a couple things I want to
- 20:50Speaker 2: talk about big picture slash little picture about where they
- 20:54Speaker 2: go moving forward. I was tough on Gonzil last week,
- 20:59Speaker 2: so I'll give him some flat hours this week. Now.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Brady Cook didn't throw a lot of catchable balls in
- 21:04Speaker 2: this game.
- 21:04Speaker 1: No, but you go back and look, I mean he
- 21:06Speaker 1: we talked about it. He had some trouble with Ady
- 21:08Speaker 1: Mitchell in the first matchup, bounced back at him, walk down,
- 21:11Speaker 1: tight coverage leads that interception. I thought he was much better.
- 21:14Speaker 2: The interception coverage was classic Gonzalez. You know, if you
- 21:18Speaker 2: run verticals against Christian Gonzalez when he's in man coverage,
- 21:22Speaker 2: especially press man, you're gonna have a tough time getting
- 21:24Speaker 2: open on him on those routes. And he just absolutely
- 21:28Speaker 2: wore Adie Mitchell like a coat on that one. I
- 21:32Speaker 2: mean that was a that was blanket coverage and Jalen
- 21:34Speaker 2: Hawkins made a nice play to come over. Cook was
- 21:37Speaker 2: zero for five with an interception, targeting Gonzalez. I thought
- 21:41Speaker 2: one or two of them weren't really catchable, to be
- 21:43Speaker 2: honest with you, but it wasn't. That's not Gonzales knock,
- 21:46Speaker 2: that's just fact. You know. He threw one to Mitchell
- 21:49Speaker 2: on and out where it hit the dirt and skipped
- 21:51Speaker 2: to him like Tim Tebow style. So you know, it
- 21:54Speaker 2: is what it is. But I dot Gonzalez was much
- 21:57Speaker 2: better in this game. Stuck his nose in there times
- 22:00Speaker 2: against the run too, So hopefully that was signs of
- 22:03Speaker 2: things to come. I would imagine that the film review
- 22:08Speaker 2: for him last week probably wasn't too great, and so
- 22:11Speaker 2: hopefully that is signs of things to come for him
- 22:14Speaker 2: in the playoffs. Last thing here, we talked a lot
- 22:18Speaker 2: last week when we were talking about this game, Alex
- 22:20Speaker 2: about special teams, the kickoff coverage, decent thirty five yard return,
- 22:27Speaker 2: thirty one yard return, twenty seven yard return in a
- 22:30Speaker 2: twenty one yard return for the Jets, so along a
- 22:33Speaker 2: thirty five average right around twenty seven to twenty eight yards.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I think he'll take it. I think it'll.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Tays that team, and that's the one thing that Jets
- 22:40Speaker 1: have done well. I think it was you who asked
- 22:42Speaker 1: Verable that last week. Good job asking a special team's question, Evan.
- 22:45Speaker 2: It was to cover the whole team. It was literally
- 22:49Speaker 2: one things that they could have done in the game
- 22:52Speaker 2: to try to make it competitive.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but even when it is important, you tend to
- 22:56Speaker 1: act like a tea.
- 22:56Speaker 2: It was in this game you was, you know me.
- 22:59Speaker 2: I tried to take the pad on the back. I
- 23:02Speaker 2: try to finish it. I try to hype up the
- 23:05Speaker 2: opponent as best I can. And I'm going to talk
- 23:07Speaker 2: about the Dolphins pretty positively, and.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I think you're gonna be more honest about that.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I try what the Jets. The only angle I could
- 23:14Speaker 2: find is that if they flip field position on kickoff
- 23:18Speaker 2: and punt return, So like that was it? Now? The
- 23:20Speaker 2: Patriots barely punted in this game, so that that punting
- 23:23Speaker 2: what right?
- 23:23Speaker 1: But they the Jets were the number one kickoff return
- 23:26Speaker 1: team in the league and turns on average yards per
- 23:28Speaker 1: re turn and those numbers like you read, I would
- 23:32Speaker 1: say that they did well against that team.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they covered the kicks pretty well. And I talked
- 23:37Speaker 2: to Brennan Schooler about it in New York after the game,
- 23:40Speaker 2: and he was really He brought up and prompted the
- 23:45Speaker 2: Buffalo game, and he was like, that was that wasn't us,
- 23:48Speaker 2: That was unacceptable. He said, you know, we can't put
- 23:51Speaker 2: our defense in those types of positions in the playoffs.
- 23:53Speaker 2: We're not going to win games in the playoffs if
- 23:57Speaker 2: we're giving the offense short fields consistently. And that was
- 24:01Speaker 2: on us. Kind of took the blame in a lot
- 24:04Speaker 2: of ways for them losing that game, and I think
- 24:07Speaker 2: that they are really serious about getting this right and
- 24:10Speaker 2: making sure that they're not hurting them. He talked a
- 24:13Speaker 2: little bit, and I'm sure this is the Patriots analytics
- 24:17Speaker 2: team putting these numbers in front of them, about the
- 24:20Speaker 2: percentages of scoring drives increase by field position on kickoff returns,
- 24:25Speaker 2: Like if you hit the thirty, it's this, if you
- 24:28Speaker 2: hit the forty, it's that. If you hit the fifty,
- 24:29Speaker 2: it's that. And like he said that, it just increases
- 24:32Speaker 2: exponentially as you go up the field, and you know,
- 24:35Speaker 2: you can see it in these games like now that
- 24:38Speaker 2: the touchbacks to thirty five, you really only need a
- 24:41Speaker 2: couple of first downs to kick a field goal, right,
- 24:43Speaker 2: and you see that across the league. Now that these
- 24:46Speaker 2: field goal drives, it's like it feels like it's like
- 24:48Speaker 2: one big play in a drive after a touchback, and
- 24:51Speaker 2: all of a sudden they're in field goal range. So
- 24:54Speaker 2: that can be a big difference, especially if you're late
- 24:56Speaker 2: in a playoff game and it's close and it's tied
- 24:59Speaker 2: and they're trying to put together a game winning drive. Well,
- 25:01Speaker 2: if you let him out to the forty yard line
- 25:03Speaker 2: on the kickoff return, now they got twenty yards ago,
- 25:06Speaker 2: and now they're kicking the game winning field goal. So
- 25:09Speaker 2: better not all the way back, but I think better
- 25:13Speaker 2: name dominated by any means, but good enough. All right.
- 25:17Speaker 2: A couple of things on the bad slash, you know,
- 25:19Speaker 2: I kind of put the things that could get you
- 25:22Speaker 2: beat in the postseason, so the Jets are not going
- 25:24Speaker 2: to be able to take advantage of these types of things.
- 25:27Speaker 2: But one of them is sort of a question that
- 25:29Speaker 2: I wanted to pose to you and the listeners can
- 25:32Speaker 2: chime in. I'm very curious what the Patriots do about
- 25:36Speaker 2: the left side of the offensive line. This was the
- 25:39Speaker 2: one game in a while where I thought Ben Brown
- 25:41Speaker 2: didn't play great, especially early. Yeah, the first couple drives
- 25:45Speaker 2: of the game, I were kind of weirdly. He was
- 25:47Speaker 2: off his game in a weird way. Vederian Loo has
- 25:51Speaker 2: been okay. I thought that he gave up a couple
- 25:53Speaker 2: pressures in this game, but nothing too crazy. It's very
- 25:56Speaker 2: clear that Will Campbell is a much better player than
- 25:58Speaker 2: Vederian low I don't think having that discussion. I think
- 26:01Speaker 2: it's a little bit closer. With Jared Wilson and Ben Brown.
- 26:05Speaker 2: I just wonder how you look at that. And you know,
- 26:09Speaker 2: I thought this game they weren't as good as they
- 26:12Speaker 2: have been on the left side, especially Brown, but he's
- 26:16Speaker 2: been solid. Darian low hasn't been has been much better
- 26:20Speaker 2: than he was last year. It's an it's an interesting problem,
- 26:23Speaker 2: not problem, but an interesting question I guess to have.
- 26:26Speaker 2: I think with Campbell it's automatic. If he's one hundred
- 26:28Speaker 2: percent or close to it, I think he plays. But
- 26:31Speaker 2: I do wonder, you know, how they look at that
- 26:33Speaker 2: if he's seventy five percent and not ninety five percent.
- 26:38Speaker 2: You know, where is that line of you know, he's
- 26:41Speaker 2: healthy enough to be better than Vaderian Lowe at this point?
- 26:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think once he can go, he goes.
- 26:46Speaker 1: I just think that's you know, when you get to
- 26:48Speaker 1: the playoffs, and I'd like to see him play at
- 26:49Speaker 1: least a little bit this excuse me this week, Yeah,
- 26:52Speaker 1: just to you know, you don't want and in Milton
- 26:54Speaker 1: Williams and Roberts playing, I'm sure we'll get to this,
- 26:56Speaker 1: like don't want their first contact coming in the playoffs,
- 26:59Speaker 1: first contact and was to be like over a month
- 27:00Speaker 1: for most of them. The Jared Wilson wants a little
- 27:03Speaker 1: more interesting. I do feel like they've run the ball
- 27:07Speaker 1: better with Ben Brown. I don't know if you'd agree
- 27:08Speaker 1: with that, but I feel like the run game has
- 27:10Speaker 1: been better with Ben Brown in the lineup, and when
- 27:12Speaker 1: you get into these cold, nasty playoff games up here
- 27:15Speaker 1: in the Northeast, you might want to lean on that
- 27:18Speaker 1: a little bit more. And I don't think the GAP's
- 27:20Speaker 1: been that different in past protection. So I think there
- 27:22Speaker 1: is a conversation we had about starting left guard and
- 27:25Speaker 1: could take a step further. We did this with Greg
- 27:27Speaker 1: Badard yesterday on Felgern Maz. You know, do you use
- 27:30Speaker 1: it as maybe an opportunity to see and look, you're
- 27:32Speaker 1: not gonna sit down Garrett Bradbury here. He's been great
- 27:35Speaker 1: this year, but he's on a pseudo one year contract.
- 27:39Speaker 1: He's under contract next year, but there's no guaranteed money.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And if they really view Jared Wilson as the center
- 27:44Speaker 1: of the future, which I still think his future is
- 27:45Speaker 1: at center. He was fine filling in a left guard
- 27:48Speaker 1: this year, but he should be a center long term.
- 27:51Speaker 1: So we've talked about them maybe needing a left guard.
- 27:54Speaker 1: How would you feel next year if it's Ben Brown
- 27:56Speaker 1: Jared Wilson R. I guess Ben Brown Garrett Bradbury. Either way,
- 28:00Speaker 1: Ben Brown a little more of a look to see
- 28:01Speaker 1: if you need to go find a new starting left guard.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I would feel better about Ben Brown in the super
- 28:07Speaker 2: sub role. I just think that's a really valuable role
- 28:10Speaker 2: yea to have where you have a even though I
- 28:12Speaker 2: thought he didn't grade out particularly well in this game,
- 28:16Speaker 2: you still have a guy that can play three different
- 28:19Speaker 2: positions on the interior offensive line at a starting caliber
- 28:23Speaker 2: level that when guys get hurt, which is inevitable, I
- 28:26Speaker 2: think it's a really valuable role to have, and I
- 28:29Speaker 2: don't I don't think a lot of teams have that
- 28:31Speaker 2: kind of depth. Now, if you want to tell me
- 28:33Speaker 2: that they're going to draft somebody or sign somebody to
- 28:36Speaker 2: fill that role and then they're going to let Ben
- 28:38Speaker 2: Brown see if he can start and not do that,
- 28:41Speaker 2: then I guess you could make the argument or say
- 28:44Speaker 2: that you know, they're kind of doing both, they're filling
- 28:46Speaker 2: both holes. But ideally I think Ben Brown stays as
- 28:50Speaker 2: like that fourth super sub fourth interior offensive lineman, and
- 28:55Speaker 2: then you go out and you get a starting caliber
- 28:58Speaker 2: left guard. But I'm not saying that Ben Brown couldn't
- 29:02Speaker 2: do it, just that's just how I feel about it,
- 29:04Speaker 2: because I've seen him in this role and he's really
- 29:06Speaker 2: good in it, and I don't know if you know
- 29:09Speaker 2: they they necessarily need to push it in any other way. Now,
- 29:11Speaker 2: maybe he's Ted Carris, that's exactly Yeah.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Literally, look I was googling Ted Carris.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe he's Ted Carris, who has been an awesome starter,
- 29:21Speaker 2: uh since really, you know, the Patriots second stint, he
- 29:26Speaker 2: leaves the Patriots goes to Cincinnati. He's been like a
- 29:28Speaker 2: captain there. He's been a starter ever since. So maybe
- 29:31Speaker 2: maybe that's Ben Brown's trajectory too, and maybe he's good
- 29:34Speaker 2: enough to do that. But then you got to fill
- 29:37Speaker 2: that role because I think that there's not a lot
- 29:38Speaker 2: of teams and I don't know what would happen if
- 29:41Speaker 2: Morgan Moses got hurt at right tackle. So this might
- 29:44Speaker 2: not apply completely to the tackles position, but they've gotten
- 29:49Speaker 2: competent play from Ben Brown and Vederian Lowe as their
- 29:52Speaker 2: sixth and seventh offensive lineman I left tackle and left guard.
- 29:57Speaker 2: There are not a lot of teams that can go
- 29:59Speaker 2: to that depth and rely on it. You know, we
- 30:01Speaker 2: might see one in the playoffs with the Chargers, who
- 30:03Speaker 2: have had all sorts of problems with their offensive line
- 30:06Speaker 2: because of injuries. So that's valuable to have. Now, would
- 30:10Speaker 2: Vederian low and Ben Brown be as good in a
- 30:12Speaker 2: sixteen to seventeen game sample size versus a four or
- 30:15Speaker 2: five game game sample size that that's a fair question too.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Well, that's that's whether spot that's like some guys are
- 30:21Speaker 1: spots starters as what that role.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Is, right, maybe he's a spot starter. The other thing
- 30:26Speaker 2: just defensively, if I had to put my finger on
- 30:29Speaker 2: what my biggest area of concern with the team right
- 30:32Speaker 2: now alex is going into the postseason, it's the lack
- 30:37Speaker 2: of disruption or whatever you want to call it upfront
- 30:40Speaker 2: on the defensive side of the ball, whether it's getting
- 30:43Speaker 2: off blocks in the run game, pressuring quarterbacks in this game.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Even though they dominated, they only got to Brady Cook
- 30:52Speaker 2: twenty eight percent of the time in the first three
- 30:55Speaker 2: quarters of the game. And what they weren't dominating because
- 30:57Speaker 2: they were getting a lot of pressure on the quarterback.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Let me put you that. And I did think that
- 31:01Speaker 2: Breis Hall, even though the big one came against the
- 31:03Speaker 2: backup defense in the fourth quarter, I did think that
- 31:06Speaker 2: he chipped away a little bit at the beginning. It
- 31:08Speaker 2: just the game got away from the Jets and it
- 31:11Speaker 2: didn't matter. So I think there's a lot riding on Splaine, Tongo, Williams,
- 31:18Speaker 2: and Landry all coming back, all being healthy and all
- 31:21Speaker 2: being the same players that they were before their injuries,
- 31:24Speaker 2: and just kind of dropping those guys into this defense
- 31:27Speaker 2: and then getting back to the way they were playing
- 31:28Speaker 2: defense in the first eight or nine weeks of the season.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Because this defense, now, with the guys that they have
- 31:34Speaker 2: that they've been playing the last couple of weeks, that defense,
- 31:38Speaker 2: I think is vulnerable in the playoffs. Now, if you're
- 31:40Speaker 2: going to tell me that Splaine and Williams and Tonga
- 31:43Speaker 2: and Lander are going to come back and they're going
- 31:45Speaker 2: to look like they did in the first half of
- 31:46Speaker 2: the season. Well, now I feel a whole lot better,
- 31:48Speaker 2: But that's a lot riding on those four guys all
- 31:51Speaker 2: doing that. Like, I don't know if that's going to happen.
- 31:53Speaker 2: I think Millon Williams will get back to it, but
- 31:56Speaker 2: I don't know about Splaine, who has had a weird ankle,
- 32:00Speaker 2: foot whatever you want to call it, injury it. Landry's clearly,
- 32:06Speaker 2: you know, compromise in some sort of way that goes
- 32:09Speaker 2: back to that Saint's injury scare, and I don't know
- 32:12Speaker 2: if that thing's gonna get better this season. He might
- 32:14Speaker 2: need to have and I don't know this for a fact,
- 32:17Speaker 2: but he might need to have some sort of off
- 32:19Speaker 2: season procedure or something like that on his knee. So
- 32:23Speaker 2: that's my biggest question is are they just simply going
- 32:26Speaker 2: to bring all four of those guys back and then
- 32:28Speaker 2: it's just gonna snap back right into place up front,
- 32:31Speaker 2: especially against the run, or is this going to be
- 32:33Speaker 2: their undoing because they kind of got banged up in
- 32:36Speaker 2: those spots.
- 32:36Speaker 1: I mean, look, when those guys come back, it'll be better.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I don't know how it couldn't be, you know, is
- 32:41Speaker 1: it going to be what they go ten weeks without
- 32:44Speaker 1: allowing a fifty yard rusher or something like that. So,
- 32:47Speaker 1: you know, are they going to go back to being
- 32:48Speaker 1: that is Milton Williams or Milton Williams Roberts playing going
- 32:52Speaker 1: to come back like that, you know, being one hundred percent,
- 32:54Speaker 1: or they gonna come back like seventy or eighty percent.
- 32:56Speaker 1: And I still think Milton Williams at eighty percent is
- 32:58Speaker 1: better than what they've had. And you know Kiro's tonga
- 33:01Speaker 1: is part of that too, So I don't think it'll
- 33:04Speaker 1: be the same as it was before they got hurt.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I think it will be better than this. The question
- 33:07Speaker 1: is just like what is it closer to?
- 33:10Speaker 5: Right?
- 33:10Speaker 1: Is it closer to what they were to start the
- 33:12Speaker 1: year before the injuries start piling up or will it
- 33:14Speaker 1: be closer to what it is now?
- 33:15Speaker 2: They just don't create enough havoc up front. They don't
- 33:18Speaker 2: there's not enough, like they don't get off enough blocks,
- 33:21Speaker 2: they don't.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Get to the quarterback wick in mind seeing them blitz more,
- 33:24Speaker 1: I feel like they've done well when they've blitzed this year, it's.
- 33:27Speaker 2: A good it's a good conversation, especially with the corners
- 33:30Speaker 2: that they have.
- 33:30Speaker 1: You know, yeah, if you look at outside of Josh Allen,
- 33:34Speaker 1: you look at the quarterbacks they're going to play by
- 33:35Speaker 1: the way Paul did his h AFC quarterback. Okay, we've
- 33:39Speaker 1: been doing a felbrin mass. We might need to check
- 33:40Speaker 1: in on that one.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Okay, But yeah, it's a good question about blitzing more.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I wonder how much of their lack of blitzing and
- 33:48Speaker 2: lack of aggressiveness in terms of man coverage stems from
- 33:52Speaker 2: like the fourth and fifth guy that they're going to
- 33:54Speaker 2: have to trust to play man coverage. Because you feel
- 33:58Speaker 2: pretty good about Gonzo David and Marcus Jones and man coverage.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Likely blitz Marcus Jones, Yes.
- 34:04Speaker 2: But who's covering the tight end? Who's covering the running back?
- 34:08Speaker 6: Right?
- 34:08Speaker 2: You know, it's not just about the top three. You
- 34:10Speaker 2: have to have five guys that can play man to
- 34:12Speaker 2: man in order to play man to man at a
- 34:14Speaker 2: high level. So do they have the fourth and fifth
- 34:17Speaker 2: guy to play man to man at a high level
- 34:21Speaker 2: is a question mark. And then if they get into
- 34:23Speaker 2: the playoffs against some of these teams like a like
- 34:27Speaker 2: a Buffalo potentially of Pittsburgh, potentially of Baltimore that do
- 34:31Speaker 2: play multiple tight ends, now maybe you have to take
- 34:34Speaker 2: Marcus Jones off the field because you don't want to
- 34:36Speaker 2: be in small nickel against bigger personnel groupings. So now
- 34:40Speaker 2: you have two guys that are you know, linebackers that
- 34:43Speaker 2: are covered, and I think that that stems from a
- 34:46Speaker 2: lot of the reason why they're not. I know a
- 34:48Speaker 2: lot of people ask why don't they play more in
- 34:50Speaker 2: man coverage with the with the corners that they have
- 34:53Speaker 2: so certain matchups. I definitely think you could see that
- 34:57Speaker 2: in the playoffs, you know, certainly a situation. You still
- 35:00Speaker 2: see it every week now. Maybe if they do play
- 35:04Speaker 2: the Chargers. The Chargers do play a lot of heavy
- 35:06Speaker 2: personnel groupings, and they will load up and try to
- 35:09Speaker 2: run the ball, and they have you know, guys that
- 35:11Speaker 2: are like converted defensive linemen playing full back and like
- 35:14Speaker 2: things like that. But I don't think that their tight
- 35:18Speaker 2: ends and backs are as dangerous as pass catchers as
- 35:20Speaker 2: some of the other teams. Like when you play Buffalo
- 35:23Speaker 2: and you have Kincaid and Knox and Cook, like, that's
- 35:25Speaker 2: a tough group to cover. I don't know if the
- 35:27Speaker 2: Chargers have that kind of talent at those positions. One
- 35:31Speaker 2: of my guys in the draft, what he marks with
- 35:32Speaker 2: the Texans is a really good receiving back out of
- 35:35Speaker 2: the backfield. Dalton Schultz is a good tight end, you know.
- 35:38Speaker 2: So maybe that matchup is not as favorable. So we'll
- 35:40Speaker 2: see what happens. But I just think that, like I said,
- 35:44Speaker 2: there's a lot riding on Milton Williams, especially in Spalain, especially,
- 35:48Speaker 2: I would say, coming back to four and being healthy
- 35:52Speaker 2: and playing at the level that they were playing at
- 35:55Speaker 2: before and sort of fixing some of the things that
- 35:57Speaker 2: are wrong with what's going on up front for this defense.
- 36:01Speaker 2: So thirty ish minutes on the on the Jets game,
- 36:04Speaker 2: I wanted to keep it under thirty. I think I
- 36:06Speaker 2: did pretty good.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd say that we pretty much kind of covered I.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Don't think we need to do, you know, one of
- 36:12Speaker 2: our hour long autopsies of this game. The other topic
- 36:16Speaker 2: I want to talk about a little bit before we
- 36:20Speaker 2: open it up to the calls and the emails and
- 36:21Speaker 2: talk some playoff scenarios as well. I do want to
- 36:24Speaker 2: discuss the Drake May MVP thing a little bit. I've
- 36:28Speaker 2: been sort of researching and getting my argument for Drake
- 36:34Speaker 2: May for MVP ready for you when the season's officially
- 36:38Speaker 2: over because it is a regular season award, so after
- 36:41Speaker 2: Sunday it's over. I don't know how strong of a
- 36:43Speaker 2: take you have on this, Alex. I feel pretty strongly
- 36:47Speaker 2: about it, just going into the numbers. Really, the only
- 36:51Speaker 2: argument that I can come up with for Matthew Stafford
- 36:54Speaker 2: over Drake may for MVP is just kind of put
- 36:59Speaker 2: in a cap or a great career for Matthew Stafford.
- 37:02Speaker 2: And I don't want to call it a lifetime achievement
- 37:04Speaker 2: work because he's been so good and that's not fair
- 37:06Speaker 2: to him. But in a lot of ways, it's kind
- 37:08Speaker 2: of like a proof of concept for him of like
- 37:10Speaker 2: he's been playing at this level for a really really
- 37:13Speaker 2: long time and the one thing he's kind of missing
- 37:16Speaker 2: is like an individual accolade like an MVP. And I
- 37:20Speaker 2: look at you know, I hear the strength of schedule
- 37:22Speaker 2: argument a lot, but then you look at common opponents,
- 37:25Speaker 2: and Drake Mayo played him in the six games they
- 37:27Speaker 2: played against common.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Appintance, and I mean, supporting cast, we can factor in
- 37:32Speaker 1: and this and that. Again, the voters broke I'm sorry
- 37:35Speaker 1: I have to do this to you.
- 37:36Speaker 2: No, that's okay.
- 37:37Speaker 1: The voters broke the system last year Yeah, because Lamar
- 37:39Speaker 1: Jackson was a better player.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Yeah, but we got to get Josh his.
- 37:43Speaker 1: And we don't know an I guess one thing that
- 37:44Speaker 1: got it for him because he ain't winning it this year.
- 37:46Speaker 2: But that's the fear that I have with Stafford, is
- 37:49Speaker 2: that it's kind of his turn. But here's the thing.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Once you open that door, because the NBA did this too, Yeah,
- 37:54Speaker 1: once you open that door, that is what it is.
- 37:57Speaker 1: I would love to see the voters get it right
- 37:59Speaker 1: and just be like, we screwed up last year. Dani
- 38:01Speaker 1: Orlosky won't admit it, but like we messed up last
- 38:04Speaker 1: year Lamar.
- 38:06Speaker 2: He's voting for Stafford based off of what he said
- 38:08Speaker 2: on TV, doubling down on it today. Yeah.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Now, there is no voter fatigue element to it this time,
- 38:13Speaker 1: because I think last time it was do we really
- 38:14Speaker 1: want to give this guy three in a row? Because
- 38:16Speaker 1: when you give a guy three MVPs in a row,
- 38:18Speaker 1: that signals something significant. I think Lamar earned him, so
- 38:21Speaker 1: you don't have to worry about this this year. I
- 38:23Speaker 1: don't think there's any voter fatigue with Matthew Stafford, but
- 38:25Speaker 1: I do think there's this element of we got to
- 38:28Speaker 1: make sure, this one guy gets his and this is
- 38:30Speaker 1: the year to give it to him, and maybe it
- 38:32Speaker 1: comes back around in a year, and however many years
- 38:34Speaker 1: like Drake Mays having a great year but maybe not
- 38:37Speaker 1: an MVP year.
- 38:38Speaker 2: But you know it's hey.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Screwed him ten years ago, or you could just you know,
- 38:42Speaker 1: fix it now. And I know Matthew Stafford gets burned
- 38:44Speaker 1: in that, which is unfortunate, but again, Lamar Jackson shouldn't
- 38:47Speaker 1: have gotten burned last year. It is crazy to think
- 38:50Speaker 1: about the stakes of it.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Though.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I don't remember if I text you this during the
- 38:52Speaker 1: game or not. I forget who it was. There was
- 38:54Speaker 1: one national writer somebody tweeted at him at the end
- 38:57Speaker 1: of that game, like does Stafford Is Stafford a Hall
- 39:01Speaker 1: of Famer?
- 39:01Speaker 3: Now?
- 39:01Speaker 2: I just think he is.
- 39:02Speaker 1: I think he will stop, but I don't want to
- 39:05Speaker 1: put the guy on blast. I don't even remember his name,
- 39:06Speaker 1: but it was like, well, you know, I think he
- 39:08Speaker 1: really needs the MVP to like lock it up. Maybe
- 39:10Speaker 1: the question was first ballot, Hall of Fame or something.
- 39:13Speaker 1: It's crazy to think about. So if you go off
- 39:17Speaker 1: the odds, which Vegas's job is to make money, it's
- 39:19Speaker 1: not their job to predict it correctly, but if you
- 39:21Speaker 1: go off the odds. So Stafford's odds kind of bottomed
- 39:25Speaker 1: out when he threw that third pick and May was
- 39:27Speaker 1: a heavy favorite, and then they started to uptick again,
- 39:30Speaker 1: and I think the idea was, like, hey, a twenty
- 39:33Speaker 1: one point comeback probably.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Clinches the MVP.
- 39:36Speaker 1: We won't talk about why they were down twenty one,
- 39:38Speaker 1: but a twenty one point comeback right clinches the MVP.
- 39:42Speaker 1: And then he throws that incomplete pass to you know,
- 39:44Speaker 1: the guy who was opened down the field. And so
- 39:46Speaker 1: it's crazy think about it. If this is going to
- 39:47Speaker 1: determine his Hall of Fame standing, and that game is
- 39:51Speaker 1: going to determine whether or not he wins the MVP,
- 39:53Speaker 1: and that pass determines that game. Like does that one
- 39:55Speaker 1: pass keep Matthew Stafford out of the Hall of Fame?
- 39:58Speaker 1: Prevent him from being a first ballot Hall of Famer?
- 40:00Speaker 1: That's what I hate about all this. I do think
- 40:01Speaker 1: there should be some recency buias to it, because I
- 40:03Speaker 1: think there is more value in playing well late in
- 40:06Speaker 1: the year than there is at the beginning. But like
- 40:08Speaker 1: I think everybody needs to take a step back, right,
- 40:11Speaker 1: just who is the better quarterback? This year, I test
- 40:14Speaker 1: evan eye test who is the better quarterbacks here? Don't
- 40:17Speaker 1: cite me EP eight, don't even cite me pass yards.
- 40:19Speaker 1: I test who's the better quarterback this year.
- 40:22Speaker 2: I gotta admit I haven't watched Matthew Stafford as closely
- 40:26Speaker 2: as I have lost Drake may So from what you've
- 40:28Speaker 2: biased and probably way more educated on the side.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Idea, we're probably the wrong people ask. But this is
- 40:34Speaker 1: what I would encourage the voters. I test who is
- 40:37Speaker 1: the better quarterback.
- 40:39Speaker 2: It's such a hard it's hard to answer that because.
- 40:44Speaker 1: But that's what it should be. And we'll get to
- 40:45Speaker 1: I have more iescribes, so we'll get to the Hall
- 40:47Speaker 1: of Fame voting in a little bit.
- 40:48Speaker 2: But like, yeah, so, I just think that the try
- 40:52Speaker 2: to whittle this down to like three or four main
- 40:55Speaker 2: categories of what people are talking about with this whole thing.
- 40:59Speaker 2: I think the biggest feather in Matthew Stafford's cap in
- 41:03Speaker 2: terms of this Hall of Fame thing is that he
- 41:06Speaker 2: objectively did it against a harder schedule. There's just no
- 41:09Speaker 2: arguing that he did it against a harder slate of games.
- 41:12Speaker 2: He's in a tougher division, he played better defenses than
- 41:15Speaker 2: Drake May. It wasn't as lopsided as some people like
- 41:18Speaker 2: to make you think, but it was what it was.
- 41:21Speaker 2: You know, Matthew Stafford played eight games against top fifteen
- 41:26Speaker 2: pass defenses by EPA, Drake May only played six. Now,
- 41:30Speaker 2: a big part of that is because he played the
- 41:32Speaker 2: Seahawks twice, but Drake May played the Bills twice, and
- 41:34Speaker 2: the Bills are top fifteen, so they both kind of
- 41:37Speaker 2: washed out. Stafford played the Texans was a big one.
- 41:41Speaker 2: He played them week one of the season, so it
- 41:43Speaker 2: was a long time ago. Now most people probably forget
- 41:46Speaker 2: that game is like fourteen to nine or something like that.
- 41:48Speaker 2: It was a rock fight of a game. So that's
- 41:53Speaker 2: that's the big knock on Drake May is that by
- 41:57Speaker 2: DVA or whatever stat you want to use use, he
- 42:00Speaker 2: pretty much has the easiest schedule in the league that
- 42:04Speaker 2: he went up against. The issue that, I is the
- 42:06Speaker 2: whole point of EPA though, that it factors in strength
- 42:09Speaker 2: to schedule notes and who is very DVA Stafford or
- 42:13Speaker 2: Stafford because of the schedule. So that that's the argument,
- 42:16Speaker 2: And you know, I'm not trying to knock him, but
- 42:20Speaker 2: Aaron Shotts is probably going to vote for Stafford because
- 42:23Speaker 2: his formula with which factors in strength to schedule is
- 42:27Speaker 2: saying that Stafford was the more valuable player.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Well, he's also wasn't he the one when Lamar should
- 42:32Speaker 1: have won it unanimously two years ago? Wasn't he the
- 42:34Speaker 1: one guy?
- 42:34Speaker 2: That sounds familiar. I'm not trying to make this about Aaron,
- 42:37Speaker 2: but I'm just saying that that's the DVOA side of it, right.
- 42:41Speaker 2: The issue is that with the with to me with
- 42:43Speaker 2: the strength the schedule thing is I did some digging
- 42:46Speaker 2: into Drake May and Matthew Stafford against top fifteen pass defenses,
- 42:51Speaker 2: Drake May versus Matthew Stafford against common opponents which they
- 42:55Speaker 2: faced six common opponents, and Drake May outperformed him and
- 42:59Speaker 2: both categories.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Right, I think that means more than a week schedule.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Frankly, so, he was much better in the six common
- 43:06Speaker 2: games that they played, you know, against common opponents. It
- 43:10Speaker 2: was the off the I have it in the second
- 43:14Speaker 2: I can't remember it off the top of my head,
- 43:16Speaker 2: six common opponents, Drake May was much better. I posted
- 43:18Speaker 2: that on Twitter last night, the graphic of the two
- 43:21Speaker 2: stats in top fifteen pass defenses again Drake May played
- 43:26Speaker 2: six games against top fifteen pass defenses. Matthew Stafford played eight.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Drake May again better.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Here somebody just retweeted it, which which number did you need?
- 43:34Speaker 2: Again? The six teams that they both played.
- 43:37Speaker 1: I put it at Ravens, Saints, Bucks, Panthers, Falcons.
- 43:40Speaker 2: So those are not all scrub defenses. The Ravens are Ravens.
- 43:46Speaker 2: The Falcons have been a good defense this year for
- 43:48Speaker 2: the most part. So we've seen this and it's not close.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Like if you look at the numbers I put up
- 43:53Speaker 2: on Twitter between these two guys and those six common games,
- 43:56Speaker 2: it's not close. Like Drake May was a much better
- 43:59Speaker 2: quarterback than those games. So you have that, you have
- 44:02Speaker 2: the common games thing, and then you have the top
- 44:05Speaker 2: fifteen pass defense thing that both you know, the fifteen
- 44:09Speaker 2: pass defenses only slightly, but they both favored Drake May
- 44:12Speaker 2: in both instances. Then you look at the fact that
- 44:17Speaker 2: you have supporting casts, right, you start to grade the
- 44:19Speaker 2: supporting casts, and I also you know, kind of looked
- 44:23Speaker 2: at not only what they ended up being in the season,
- 44:26Speaker 2: but also what the preseason expectations were for their supporting
- 44:31Speaker 2: casts and coming into the season, Bill Barnwell every year
- 44:35Speaker 2: he does that ranking of the skill groups wide receivers,
- 44:41Speaker 2: running backs, tight ends, right, just the pass catcher, skill
- 44:44Speaker 2: group positions, whatever you want to call it. He does it.
- 44:47Speaker 2: One through thirty two. He had the Patriots coming into
- 44:50Speaker 2: the season with the thirtieth ranked skill group in the NFL,
- 44:55Speaker 2: thirtieth out of thirty two. The Rams were fifth, So
- 45:00Speaker 2: Drake may has taken a group that well, they.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Also shouldn't have been ranked thirty second. Okay, I mean
- 45:05Speaker 1: that's a part of it.
- 45:06Speaker 2: But you can you can say that, but anybody by
- 45:11Speaker 2: Eddie Metric was saying that they were a middling.
- 45:15Speaker 1: I'll just go back to Bill Barnwell's preseason rankings. If
- 45:19Speaker 1: you have to go to that to justify it, you've
- 45:22Speaker 1: already lost the plot who is the better player? Like
- 45:27Speaker 1: this is this is what this is about, and this
- 45:28Speaker 1: is where it gets.
- 45:29Speaker 2: So we have to do this, like this is I guess,
- 45:31Speaker 2: and well this is a whole. Like you you can
- 45:34Speaker 2: like I think that, Like you you can sit here
- 45:37Speaker 2: and say eye test, but like if you just go
- 45:39Speaker 2: base off your eye test, then that's super subjective and
- 45:41Speaker 2: like you're not gonna like that's not a good voter. No, no,
- 45:44Speaker 2: I mean you have to look at like what's going.
- 45:47Speaker 1: On, But we're really splitting hairs here.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Now I'm going to get to it, like I'm going
- 45:51Speaker 2: to close the book on this.
- 45:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 45:52Speaker 2: So he's thirty thirtieth in the league in terms of
- 45:57Speaker 2: skill groups coming into the season. He took a group that,
- 46:00Speaker 2: by every all accounts, whichever lists you want to look at,
- 46:03Speaker 2: whichever analysts you want to read or listen to, was
- 46:07Speaker 2: at best middleingue. Yeah, and they are fifth in the
- 46:10Speaker 2: league and scoring on offense with the middling group of
- 46:12Speaker 2: pass catchers. And yeah, we underrated the Patriots pass catchers.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Even though we underrated the Patriots pass catchers, they are
- 46:20Speaker 2: still not better than the Rams. No, they're not. So
- 46:22Speaker 2: that to me, that's all you need to say. So
- 46:23Speaker 2: the Rams in season, the Rams have the number one
- 46:27Speaker 2: receiving grade in football according to Pro Football Focus, number
- 46:31Speaker 2: one in the league. The Patriots were at four, which
- 46:34Speaker 2: is really really good. But it's not number one, right,
- 46:36Speaker 2: It's it's still a little bit worse. Yeah, you know,
- 46:38Speaker 2: same thing kind of with the offensive line. Everybody thought
- 46:40Speaker 2: the Patriots offensive line was going to.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Say, the Patriots offensive line is actually grated out higher
- 46:44Speaker 1: in the RAMS.
- 46:45Speaker 2: So the Patriots offensive line is fourteenth and pass block
- 46:47Speaker 2: win rate right now, the.
- 46:48Speaker 1: RAMS are fifth, so one of those composite rankings. But
- 46:53Speaker 1: this is why using the rank its.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Yeah, this is why I didn't use the composite rankings
- 46:57Speaker 2: because not because he's supported my argument, but because now
- 47:01Speaker 2: it is pulling in information from all different places and
- 47:04Speaker 2: it just kind of gets cloudy. So I wanted to
- 47:06Speaker 2: stick with ESPN. I think that's That's where I'm sticking
- 47:10Speaker 2: with across the board on all of this. So that's
- 47:13Speaker 2: the supporting cast argument that I think heavily favors Drake May.
- 47:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I forget if I said this with you on
- 47:18Speaker 1: another show. You can make a really good argument.
- 47:21Speaker 3: You just did.
- 47:22Speaker 1: I think you've made more of the argument that you
- 47:24Speaker 1: needed to. You make a really good argument. That Drake
- 47:26Speaker 1: May has lists of supporting casts doesn't mean it's bad
- 47:29Speaker 1: because I don't want to turn this into let's bash
- 47:31Speaker 1: Kaishan Booty and Stefan Diggs Hunter henrycause they've actually been
- 47:34Speaker 1: really good this year.
- 47:35Speaker 2: No, I just said they are fourth in the league
- 47:36Speaker 2: and receiving grade.
- 47:37Speaker 1: I think you make a strong argument. Matthew Stafford is
- 47:39Speaker 1: a better supporting cast. I think you make a strong
- 47:41Speaker 1: argument Drake may have had an easier schedule. Those cancel out, Yeah,
- 47:44Speaker 1: those just cancel and they.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Clearly has Matthew Stafford too. I got to mention clearly
- 47:49Speaker 2: has a better traditional running game.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Yes, that's as part of the supporting cast. Yeah, like
- 47:53Speaker 1: hugely different.
- 47:54Speaker 2: You know, twenty fifth in the league and EPA for
- 47:57Speaker 2: the Patriots, fifth in the league for the Rams.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Row for respecting Vrabel and McDaniels and not pulling the
- 48:04Speaker 1: will use Sean McVay card, because I don't think that
- 48:06Speaker 1: one's as lopsided as some people are maybe now, and
- 48:09Speaker 1: I know that that's a check against Drake May, but like,
- 48:11Speaker 1: I don't think that that's lopsided, and that's nothing against
- 48:13Speaker 1: Sean McVay. This also gets the bigger problem of like
- 48:16Speaker 1: I don't want to I am somebody who said for
- 48:18Speaker 1: a long time that it's the most valuable player and
- 48:22Speaker 1: it should be awarded as such. I this was pre
- 48:25Speaker 1: when we were on the air. I think we were
- 48:26Speaker 1: in like high school. Well you're did Peyton miss nine
- 48:29Speaker 1: ten and the Colts just bottomed out essentially the same roster.
- 48:33Speaker 1: I was one of those people that was like, hey,
- 48:34Speaker 1: Peyton should win most Valuable Player even though he didn't play.
- 48:37Speaker 1: I was, of course, you were dumb ass fourteen year
- 48:40Speaker 1: old and me had that take, But like, is it
- 48:43Speaker 1: is it best player most valuable player? Because for years
- 48:45Speaker 1: and years and years it was best player and it
- 48:47Speaker 1: said valuable, but it was really best best at a
- 48:49Speaker 1: premium position, and we all knew what it was. And
- 48:52Speaker 1: then last year all of a said, well no, like
- 48:54Speaker 1: you take Lamar off the Ravens and you take Josh
- 48:56Speaker 1: Allen off the Bills with how different it is. So again,
- 48:58Speaker 1: if you know, is it is it that's are valuable?
- 49:00Speaker 1: Shout out to the Canadian Football League. Do you know
- 49:02Speaker 1: what they call their award? What most Outstanding Player?
- 49:05Speaker 4: Oh?
- 49:06Speaker 2: I actually like that because.
- 49:07Speaker 1: It's two different things. So that's where you get into
- 49:09Speaker 1: this too. Like a lot of the defense switch the quarterbacks,
- 49:13Speaker 1: put Drake may on the rams.
- 49:16Speaker 2: The stuff that you're trying to argue though, is not tangible.
- 49:19Speaker 2: I can't tell you what it would look like if
- 49:21Speaker 2: you switch the quarterback. I look at you, who wants tangibility? Yeah,
- 49:24Speaker 2: I've always wanted tangibility. You just don't believe in the tangible.
- 49:27Speaker 1: No, I'm expected it's not tangible. It's the by definition,
- 49:30Speaker 1: it's not because you don't understand the status.
- 49:31Speaker 2: And I'll explain the definition. It's not. I explained the
- 49:34Speaker 2: stat to you. Every single do that right now.
- 49:36Speaker 1: You know who's who's more valuable to their team, Matt
- 49:39Speaker 1: Stafford or Trake.
- 49:40Speaker 2: Well, that's why I brought up the preseason ranking, right
- 49:43Speaker 2: because that to me speaks to how much he has
- 49:45Speaker 2: elevated the supporting cast around him. So that's not to
- 49:48Speaker 2: knock the Kaishan Boudi and Stefan Diggs and Hunter Henry
- 49:52Speaker 2: and Matt Collins and those guys have all played great
- 49:54Speaker 2: football for the Patriots this year. But we have to
- 49:57Speaker 2: at some point recognize, you know, what we thought of
- 50:01Speaker 2: that group and what they have become a lot of
- 50:04Speaker 2: that as we saw, you know, with a other quarterback
- 50:07Speaker 2: here for twenty years, a lot of that ends up
- 50:09Speaker 2: being about how great the quarterback is. See I would
- 50:12Speaker 2: I won't.
- 50:12Speaker 1: I will push back on that a little bit in
- 50:14Speaker 1: terms of like, well, this is what we thought they
- 50:16Speaker 1: were in the preseason and so and look, has Drake
- 50:18Speaker 1: may elevated this group? Absolutely, But just if we're gonna
- 50:20Speaker 1: be fair. We're a fair fair conversation. Yeah, rams are great. Example,
- 50:23Speaker 1: Pooka was a fourth round pick, fifth round pick. Yeah,
- 50:26Speaker 1: so you look at his first year and this guy
- 50:28Speaker 1: was a fourth threat And obviously this isn't the case,
- 50:30Speaker 1: but like you could say, well, this guy was a
- 50:31Speaker 1: fourth round pick and look what Stafford turned him into. Well, no,
- 50:34Speaker 1: he just ended up being a really good player that
- 50:36Speaker 1: a lot of people mis evaluated. And I think in
- 50:38Speaker 1: the case of the Patriots, because I don't want to
- 50:41Speaker 1: do the thing that gets done with Josh Allen where
- 50:44Speaker 1: it's all the quarterback and nobody else gets credit even
- 50:46Speaker 1: when they deserve credit. Was the Patriots skill group not
- 50:50Speaker 1: that good and Drake May elevated them? Or did a
- 50:53Speaker 1: lot of people misevaluate the Patriots skill group? I think
- 50:56Speaker 1: I think it's both. I think it's both, but let's
- 50:58Speaker 1: not just make it. Hey, this is the thirty second
- 51:01Speaker 1: word supporting cast in the NFL, and Drake May elevate them.
- 51:03Speaker 1: I think a lot of people were wrong about what
- 51:06Speaker 1: Drake May was working with going into the season. So
- 51:08Speaker 1: I don't I don't want to go too much in
- 51:10Speaker 1: that direction with the conversation because I think it does
- 51:13Speaker 1: a disservice and it takes away from the job that
- 51:15Speaker 1: guys like Kayshawn Booty and Hunter Henry and Ramonterey Stevenson,
- 51:19Speaker 1: and you know, you want to extend it to the
- 51:20Speaker 1: coaching staff and and the job that Doug Marone has
- 51:23Speaker 1: done and guys like that. So I still think Drake
- 51:26Speaker 1: may should win it. I don't feel like I need
- 51:29Speaker 1: that talking point to make my case.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Well, I think you need it because everybody else is
- 51:35Speaker 2: using these talking points.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Well, Stafford is gonna win it.
- 51:38Speaker 2: And so but the only way to make like, to
- 51:40Speaker 2: make the pro Drake argument here is to hit them
- 51:45Speaker 2: with facts about the arguments that they're making against Drake.
- 51:48Speaker 2: Or here's like, Kylas, do you want to do it?
- 51:50Speaker 2: I understand you want to, like the numbers, yeah, and
- 51:53Speaker 2: then and I was going to get that to that
- 51:55Speaker 2: as the last thing. Okay, there's a literally I would
- 51:57Speaker 2: lead with this. There's no to me, this is the
- 51:59Speaker 2: last thing. This is how the MVP discussion works, and
- 52:03Speaker 2: the numbers last year heavily favored Lamar Jackson and he
- 52:06Speaker 2: didn't win the award. So like I can't sit here, okay,
- 52:10Speaker 2: but it is what it is. He didn't win the award.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Okay, but so here's and this is we're doing the
- 52:14Speaker 1: catch twenty two things who should win it and who
- 52:16Speaker 1: will win it or two different conversations.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Okay, but I didn't want the Patriots guy to win it,
- 52:20Speaker 2: so I am going to make the argument for him
- 52:22Speaker 2: to win it. Yes, and I'm going to poke holes
- 52:24Speaker 2: in the arguments that people use against him. But that's
- 52:26Speaker 2: how it works.
- 52:27Speaker 1: So and my point is I would open with it's
- 52:31Speaker 1: good touchdowns, wins all that.
- 52:34Speaker 2: People didn't think tomorrow. I was building a take.
- 52:39Speaker 1: I'm approaching this as like a lawyer, like you're approaching
- 52:42Speaker 1: this as like you don't have time for this. Then
- 52:45Speaker 1: I want to win the debate. I'm starting with my
- 52:47Speaker 1: strongest argument off the time.
- 52:48Speaker 2: I don't believe. I don't know if that's the strongest argument,
- 52:52Speaker 2: because we're talking about what other people. We have to
- 52:55Speaker 2: figure out ways to poke holes in these stupid arguments
- 52:58Speaker 2: that other people are using. Because if it was just
- 53:00Speaker 2: as simple as look at the at the box score,
- 53:03Speaker 2: and that's how we're going to decide it, this would
- 53:04Speaker 2: be Drake May and a landslide, So it wouldn't matter.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Shout out Bill Belichick talking to Derek Mason sometimes pointing
- 53:10Speaker 1: up there and saying, scoreboard is a hell of an argument.
- 53:12Speaker 1: That was Derek Mason, right, you know clip I'm.
- 53:14Speaker 2: Talking about uh maybe, but I'm just trying to help
- 53:17Speaker 2: people in this email or nailed it that That's exactly
- 53:20Speaker 2: what I was trying to say. I'm just trying to
- 53:24Speaker 2: help people understand, Derek Mason, what the voters consider and
- 53:28Speaker 2: what they look at, the criteria they look at. And
- 53:31Speaker 2: I'm trying to tell the voters that are telling me
- 53:34Speaker 2: that it's Matthew Stafford that they're crazy. Okay, So that's
- 53:37Speaker 2: what I'm trying to do. You're over here just like
- 53:39Speaker 2: trying to like play mad and then just switch them
- 53:41Speaker 2: on to.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Different as efficiently as possible.
- 53:44Speaker 2: So efficiency I'm getting to your your your point, Okay.
- 53:49Speaker 2: The last thing here, of course, is just the overall numbers,
- 53:53Speaker 2: taking all of the noise out of it, of strength,
- 53:55Speaker 2: the schedule and supporting casts and all that, just what
- 53:59Speaker 2: are the number is telling you? And the only number
- 54:03Speaker 2: that favors Matthew Stafford is touchdown passes. It's the only
- 54:07Speaker 2: one total touch he even have total touchdowns? Rushing does
- 54:11Speaker 2: he does? But it's less of a gap.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Obviously, it's like one or two, right, No, it's like eight.
- 54:15Speaker 2: It's like he has a dozen more touchdown passes. Drake
- 54:17Speaker 2: May's rush for four touchdowns, so it's eight if you
- 54:20Speaker 2: include his total touchdowns.
- 54:22Speaker 1: But it's not nothing.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Drake May has more total yards if you include rushing.
- 54:27Speaker 2: He has a better completion percentage, he has a better
- 54:30Speaker 2: passer rating, he has better EPA per dropback and total EPA.
- 54:35Speaker 2: He has a higher QBR. Like you just go right
- 54:38Speaker 2: down the list all these graphics that you look at
- 54:40Speaker 2: where it's like the green or the check goes to
- 54:42Speaker 2: the guy who it favors. It's like ten checks for
- 54:45Speaker 2: Drake May and then one check for Matthew Stafford.
- 54:48Speaker 1: Just like last year was the rushing touchdowns for Josh Allen.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Everybody sat on that.
- 54:51Speaker 2: Also.
- 54:52Speaker 1: I was typing a pull up the player comparison on
- 54:54Speaker 1: Pro Football Reference. Yeah, and I did Stafford first, and
- 54:56Speaker 1: it recommended me. Do you want to compare Matthew Stafford
- 54:59Speaker 1: and Jimmy Garoppolo.
- 55:00Speaker 2: No, I do not. So you're you're looking at the
- 55:03Speaker 2: overall stats.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Now, Stafford is, to be fair, Stafford is passing yards.
- 55:06Speaker 1: He has passed two yards, but not totally yards.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Right if you add the rushing yards I think, which
- 55:10Speaker 2: I think is only fair to do because Stafford does
- 55:13Speaker 2: not run and Drake does that, then Jack puts Drake
- 55:16Speaker 2: May over the top. In turn, it's a total offense.
- 55:19Speaker 1: He need a hell of a game against Miami, and
- 55:20Speaker 1: frankly he has this game, they're probably gonna pull him sooner.
- 55:23Speaker 1: He could be a five thousand yard player this year.
- 55:25Speaker 2: A total k yards. Yeah, you need like four hundred
- 55:29Speaker 2: yards in the game against Miami. I think he's at
- 55:31Speaker 2: like forty six something.
- 55:33Speaker 4: He is at.
- 55:35Speaker 1: No, there we go, you're doing math forty six twelve,
- 55:38Speaker 1: So he would need high three hundreds, which again, if
- 55:41Speaker 1: he's playing that well, they're probably pulled in the start.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Is like, he could be a five thousand, It's not impossible.
- 55:45Speaker 1: So yes, I was doing math. I was doing tangible math.
- 55:48Speaker 2: In summary, because you're you're you're mad at me. In summary,
- 55:53Speaker 2: the better overall statistics are Drake May. The better statistics
- 55:58Speaker 2: in common games are Drake May. The better statistics against
- 56:03Speaker 2: top fifteen pass defenses belonged to Drake May, and Drake
- 56:07Speaker 2: May did it with the worst supporting cast. So if
- 56:10Speaker 2: your arguments are Matthew Stafford had a harder schedule, well, true,
- 56:18Speaker 2: but if you whittle it down and sort of look
- 56:21Speaker 2: into the numbers a little bit deeper than just easy schedule,
- 56:24Speaker 2: hard schedule, it tells you that Drake May was damn
- 56:26Speaker 2: good against the good teams that he played too. And
- 56:29Speaker 2: then the last thing that I would just say is
- 56:32Speaker 2: that if you're going to give the award to Matthew
- 56:34Speaker 2: Stafford because he's been a great Hall of Fame caliber
- 56:37Speaker 2: quarterback for a long time and it's kind of his turn,
- 56:40Speaker 2: then that's like kind of lazy in my opinion. I
- 56:42Speaker 2: just don't really understand how you do that. You can't
- 56:45Speaker 2: just assume that Drake May is going to play for
- 56:48Speaker 2: another twenty years and have another twenty bites at the
- 56:51Speaker 2: apple of MVP. That's probably going to happen. But you
- 56:54Speaker 2: can't just assume that that's going to happen, that every
- 56:57Speaker 2: single year he's going to be in the running, and oh,
- 56:59Speaker 2: he'll get it eventually, we'll give it to him eventually.
- 57:01Speaker 2: I think that that's a weak argument. So there you go.
- 57:04Speaker 2: You can read this all on Patriots dot Com over
- 57:06Speaker 2: the next couple of days. When I publish it if
- 57:08Speaker 2: you want to actually look at the numbers, and I'll
- 57:10Speaker 2: make boards and I'll make it fancy for all you
- 57:12Speaker 2: and you can actually see what it looks like tangibly,
- 57:15Speaker 2: because it's kind of hard to articulate numbers on a
- 57:18Speaker 2: radio show, so I didn't want to get into like
- 57:21Speaker 2: all of the statistics and confuse everybody. So you can
- 57:24Speaker 2: see it visually here in a couple of minutes. Alex
- 57:26Speaker 2: just wants to do it based off the eye test,
- 57:29Speaker 2: so we'll end it there. You know who's the eye
- 57:32Speaker 2: test quarterback? Best part? That's Drake May.
- 57:34Speaker 1: But I think Stafford's gonna win it.
- 57:36Speaker 2: I think Stafford's gonna win it too. But I think
- 57:37Speaker 2: he's gonna win it because they want to give him
- 57:39Speaker 2: a lifetime achievement.
- 57:40Speaker 1: Because they broke the thing. They broke the thing last year.
- 57:44Speaker 1: You know who's fault it is?
- 57:45Speaker 2: Who's faulted? Who's fault it is?
- 57:46Speaker 1: That Drake May is not going to win the MVP.
- 57:48Speaker 1: It's Josh Allen's faults. Well, it's his, it's his PR
- 57:51Speaker 1: machine's fault. Stafford, I don't blame if he wants to
- 57:53Speaker 1: have a good PR machine, I don't blame him. We
- 57:55Speaker 1: all do, but it's his PR machine's fault.
- 57:57Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, all right, So we're going to take a
- 57:59Speaker 2: quick break and then we'll open up the show to
- 58:01Speaker 2: your calls and your emails. We'll talk a little playoff

- 1:01:17Speaker 2: super easy.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I have to I don't know the bront Ones, but
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: they look very comfortable, but I just slip on. Boots
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: are excellent.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: Maybe we can get you some bront Ones post snow
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: on Monday. Can we bump that up a little bit,
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: especially like when I have to go walk the dog
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: and all I have to do is kind of just
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: slide my foot Intorees perfect. So a little shout out
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: to Brunt as well, thank you for the boots. Let's
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: take these calls and we'll get to some emails, and
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: I also want to play a little game with the
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: playoff machine here in a second. But I know you
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: guys have been waiting. Max is in California. What's up, Max?
- 1:01:49Speaker 6: Can you guys hear me?
- 1:01:50Speaker 7: Yes?
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: Cool? Hi, longtime listener, first time caller, blah blah blah.
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: You know how it is, love the show, keep it,
- 1:01:58Speaker 6: thank you, thank you. Three question for you two and
- 1:02:04Speaker 6: I'll try to make it quick.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: Number one.
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: All the whole overarching things I want to talk about.
- 1:02:10Speaker 6: We're talking about past catchers, We're talking about wide receivers,
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: talking about tight ends, we're talking about supporting cast, blah
- 1:02:15Speaker 6: blah blah going into the off season. I think the
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: general gist. I know you guys talked on PU yesterday
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: about even though it's no longer like the big one,
- 1:02:27Speaker 6: big glaring need the team needs is a wide receiver
- 1:02:30Speaker 6: one or a major pass catcher, it's still a big need,
- 1:02:34Speaker 6: and I wanted to know. I think the first part
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: of this question is more for bars. Let's say off
- 1:02:41Speaker 6: season started today. Is there a particular pass catcher, wide
- 1:02:46Speaker 6: receiver in the draft that you've got your eyes on already?
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: And I'm not talking about like a Jordan Tyson who's
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: gonna go way before we're gonna be able to pick,
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: but like, you know, like a Chris Bell, someone who
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: you reasonably at this point are like, I think this
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: is a guy that would work on the Patriots and
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: we actually might have a chance to pick him up
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: in the draft. Part two, just talk about free agents,
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: Just talk about trade targets. Is there someone that you
- 1:03:11Speaker 6: already have your eyes on, conceivably for free agency next year.
- 1:03:15Speaker 6: I've heard Evan talk about Isaiah likely, Massachusetts native. We
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: need someone to pick up sort of the mantle for
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: the tight ends on the team because we only got
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: hunt a hemmy on contract. So first part, draft, second
- 1:03:27Speaker 6: part free agent, third part.
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: Let's say we pick.
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: Up a wide receiver in either of these two scenarios.
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: Right now we're carrying seven. Who do you guys think
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: is the odd man out? Because right now I think
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: all of them are under contract next year. There's not
- 1:03:42Speaker 6: really one guy who's clearly like we can tack them
- 1:03:44Speaker 6: to the curb because they're all kind of contributing in
- 1:03:46Speaker 6: one way or the other. So I'm curious who you
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: guys would maybe consider, like maybe letting go of to
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: make room for a new guy, and I'll take it
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: off there.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: Thanks, guys, there's a lot of unpacked yeah, really quickly
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: my opinion, I know you probably have more names than
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: I do. I guess I could ask you this too,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: is a question, uh, in terms of receivers. You know
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: where I'm going with this, kayle. I don't know that
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: they're gonna have a shot at him, So if they,
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: I don't want this to happen. But let's just say
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: they losing on wild card weekend and they're picking, you know,
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: they pick like twenty first, twentieth.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Something you need to trade up.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: So you still think he's gonna go too high? Yeah,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: I think so because sometimes like though, like the the
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Zay Flowers is the JSNS, like Jordan Addison, like those
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: guys all kind of fell to that like late teams early, and.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Those guys are really good, and I think the league's
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: starting to catch on.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: Maybe one justin Jefferson, but that one was a mistake,
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: but justin jer Yeah.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: So I mean it's like what to the last part
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: question that was about receivers, Right, who's the guy out?
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I mean that kind of informs the first question, right,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: what role are you looking to fill?
- 1:04:53Speaker 7: Is?
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: Is mac Hollins back?
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: He's going to be on one you I don't think
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: he has any guaranteed money on his contract next year.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: What's to do with Da Giggs? Those are probably the two.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Maybe they look at it and say, you know, we're
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: gonna trade Kesehan BOUTI get a good pick for him
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: and kind of reset the timing there, you know, instead
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: of paying. I'm not saying they would do that, but
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: just like who do they want? If it is that
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: that z Ole that Digs, I'm just going with it
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: says nothing to do with what happened Noway, I'm just
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: going with him because he's the oldest player and we
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: knew and they sign him at the time, like he
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: was here for a good time, not a long time. Right,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: it's a he's a bridge guy I really like. Uh
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: So he used to go by Casey. I've seen this
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: year he goes by Kevin. I don't know, so I
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: apologize if I get it wrong, but Casey conception out
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: of text A and M. Since i've seen, you're gonna
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: like him. You're kind of guy. So he was at
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: NC State, was unbelievable, unbelievable as a true freshman, and
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: then NC State last year just had a whole mess
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: at quarterback and it killed him and so he kind
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: of fell off the map. Transfers to text A and M.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: He's been their number one receiver this year. Obviously they
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: get to the playoff. He puts some weight on this
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: last year, he puts some eyes on, which he needed
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: to do because he was kind of drifting towards that.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: He wasn't quite as small as Tess Johnson, but like that,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: can he be a three down player at his size
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: six eleven one ninety not six eleven that'd be great.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Five eleven, one ninety, really good speed, excellent route runner
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: for his size, is terrific at the catch point. That's
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: kind of the biggest thing that stood out to me
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: about him this year is I knew he was a
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: guy that could get open, make guys miss after the catch,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: you know, make plays over the middle of the field.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: His ability to win and contested catches has really approved.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: He's also a really good punt returner, and obviously they
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: have Marcus Jones, but you know, kicks punts whatever. Couldn't
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: hurt to have another guy that can do that. So
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: he's projected to be a late first round pick early
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: right now, late first round pick right now, probably within
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: the Patriots range. I think the color mentioned Chris Bell
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: two from Louisville, who's the opposite.
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: He's the big outside guy.
- 1:06:52Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: I've seen some really two early mock drafts, like putting
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: him on the Patriots.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: We're trying to see because he's gonna test really well
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: and he looks the part, you know, does he kind
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: of shoot up if one of these other guys like
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Denzel Boston moves down. But I for where I think
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: they're gonna be at again, the legal stuff with Digs aside,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: he's not here for that much longer conception conception own
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: in that role I think would be an awesome fit.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: And the fact that there aren't that many guys that
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: play that role that are good contested catch guys. Having
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: that guy with Drake may that kind of puts it
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: over the top for me. So the Jordan Tyson dream
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: is dead. Like you mentioned, I still think Jordan Tyson
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: is the best receiver in the draft. We might have
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: some fun Jordan Tyson Carnell Tate debates this spring.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: I know you do.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: But Cant is another He's gonna go to high He's
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: gonna be a top time.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: Yeah. But he's another like strong hands, you know down
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: he's so that's the guy if.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: They move on from Hollands or Booty, he would make
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: more sense if they could realistically get him. I'm just
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: gonna call him KCC because again I don't know exactly
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: what he's going by now we'll find out. But casec
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: Ad text A and m that's my guy. I'm a
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: big fan.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: I am going to hold out hope that mkayle Lemon
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: is within their range. You mentioned the Diggs thing with
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: you one hundred percent. Nothing to do with was recent news,
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: but we knew when they signed him that he was
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: a bridge wide receiver one and especially in this Josh
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: McDaniels offense, they are going to need a volume Z,
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: a volume you know, move piece slot receiver, outside receiver,
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: just like the exact role that Diggs is playing right now. Yeah,
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: that role he is not going to be a long
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: term answer at his age and that role nothing to
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: do again with what's going on off the field. So
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: to me, mkayle lemon just fits that to a t.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Like McKayle lemon is going to be a high volume,
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: flirt with one hundred catches type guy in the NFL.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: So again, I think conception own is also that guy.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: Just you're gonna be able to get him.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: So you're like saying that he's like maybe early day two,
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: late round one version and McKayle lemon's probably like the
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: top twenty version.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Yeah, basically, Well, and it's going to be interesting because
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: there's that you know how I love to talk about
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: these guys like Jordan Addison was one of these guys.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: I think that's the first thing we talked about. It's
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: all going to be what's real. He had a really
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: good true freshman year in a down ACC was not
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: as good the next year. I personally believe that was
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: because of the quarterback. The other people are gonna say otherwise,
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: And then he went to the ACC or the SEC
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: and was much better. But like, which is the real?
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: You're gonna have to watch all three years to get
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: the full picture of who he is on tape. You
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: can't just watch last year.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: Uh, Lemon reminds me and maybe it's just the USC
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: thing and then we can move on from this point.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: He does remind me a little bit of Amon Ras
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: Sain Brown like he I think he. I don't know
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: if he's quite as physical, because no one is really
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: as physical as amine Ral Saint Brown, but there are
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: similar players and similar play styles. I would just he
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: would absolutely eat in Josh mcdaniels's offense.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: And I don't disagree with that.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: I just don't know that.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: Or it could be the Christian of the Alles thing again,
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: where we sit here for four months and say, don't
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: talk about him and he's not going to be there.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Yeah and that, but if he's there, you run the
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: and then he's there. I h freegency too. Yeah, Kyle Pitts, Kyle.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Cop is gonna be expensive. He's gonna be expensive.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Is he like it's one year.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Yeah, He's going to be expensive.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: I just I love that man.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: So I think Kyle Pitts is a great fit from
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: a passing game perspective, and Drake May would love throwing
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: seams and things like that to Kyle Pitts down the field.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: Kyle Bizz doesn't really block though, And like, the one
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: kind of down side to what they have at right
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: now at tight end is that they're not really a
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: great running team out of two tight end sets. And
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: if you can't run the ball out of two tight end,
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: then you can't get the defense to react to the
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: fact that you're in two tight end. So now you're
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: still facing nickel defenses because you're not running the ball
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: too well. So the whole idea of playing two tight
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: ends is to get base defense on the field, so
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: that way there you can get the tight ends on
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: linebackers and hunt matchups like that. If you if you
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: don't run the ball effectively out of two tight end,
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: then it kind of and it hurts that Now if
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: you have a really good inline blocker paired with Kyle Pitts.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Now you can use Kyle Pitts as kind of like
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: a joker move tight end, and he's sort of in
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: a different role. I just don't know. That's not Hunter
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: Henry's game. Like Austin Hooper is a little bit better
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: of an inline blocker, but he's not a dynamic receiver.
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: Get a blocking tight end in the draft, So.
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: Do you do that?
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: You do something like that impair him differently. Now you're
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: kind of blowing up the room as much point.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: So let me ask you about I know, and a
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: lot of people mentioned Isaiah Likely, who I think we
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: both like, Charlie Kohler. We give you two more names,
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Kate Aughton, Penning Curagent.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe like kind of desert Austin Hooper replacement to me,
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: if you're going to go that route.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: Well, but I think he's young.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: He's like twenty six years, like resetting the clock on it.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: Well, but I think that is like and maybe you know,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: if he gets in a rhythm with May, he becomes
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: the guy that takes over for Henry eventually. Uh and
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: then Foster mo.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Row better blocker, but not not the receiver that the
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: guys he was.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: With McDaniels in Vegas.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: He was I do wonder, you know, the one other
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: tight end name. I do wonder what Vegas wants with
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: Michael Mayer.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: You know, do they feel Yeah, did he have some
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: quote though about like he didn't love playing for Josh They.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: All said that, so did Demante Adams. I don't know,
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: but Mayor to me, is is one guy that I
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: in terms of trade market at that position. You know,
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: they already have Bowers, Like, do they need both guys?
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: And do they feel like that's how they want to
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: build their offense? Just a thought, but I really do.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: I'm a I'm a likely guy. I think that would
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: be a great fit. I just love his explosiveness. Uh,
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: in the passing game pits, I think is going to
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: be an expensive get. And I'm not saying that they
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: shouldn't be in that market.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: But I think if you're gonna make one or two splashes,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: yeah right, yeah, say, I know we just talked about
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: with the wide receivers, but I think more realistically they're
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: going defense top. Let's say you get your edge in
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: the draft. Yeah, like that might free up to spend
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: some money on a tight end.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: Yeah, fair enough. All right, Patty is an aguan. What's up, Patty?
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: Are you.
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: Doing all right? Got just a couple points. The second one,
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: I'm really excited about Alex for you because this might
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: blow your mind. But the first thing I want to
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: say is about the Drake may MVP talk. Just eyeball test.
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: Like you, Evan, I haven't watched a lot of Stafford games,
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: but just the eyeball test, the way that me has
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: been able to push the ball downfield this year, and
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: just the command that he's shown, and only his second
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: year after going four straight, four straight seasons in a
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: row with different offensive coordinators going back to college. I
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: think the kids the complete package. I don't care about
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: the Lifetime Achievement award. Just give the kids a freaking award,
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: but I don't care if he gets it. The only
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: MVP I care about the Super Bowl MVP. And just
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: one more quick point on the whole MVP thing. Back
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: in ninety nine, they flashed this stat. I think it
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: was a past Ravens game, the only team and like
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: the last thirty years, i'd had a worst opponent winning percentage,
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: just based on winning percentage, and I don't know if
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: this is true or not. Was the ninety nine rams.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: Does anybody talk about how that team was played a
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: soft schedule or do they talk about are they revered
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: as like the greatest show on turf and they're known
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: as the Super Bowl champions now on forever? You know.
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: So that's all I gotta that's my take on the
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: MVP thing. Now it's this is this is an off
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: season discussion. There was three guys realistically that I thought
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: the Patriots could possibly trade for this is coming off season,
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: and in no particular order. I said, the two wide
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: receivers for the Vikings, Addison Jefferson or Max Crosby.
- 1:14:43Speaker 6: I love all of them.
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: After I watched the Monday Night game and Alex you
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: said there's never going to be another Derrick Henry. You're
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: not a dishonest person. In my opinion. I don't really
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: know you, but like just just your takes, so I
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: don't think you you throw dishonest tapes out there. I
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: think Bjhon Robinson is going to be the next Derrick Henry.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: And I would be willing to give up my first
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: round pick this year, this come in year, my twenty
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: twenty seven first round pick, our second round pick this year,
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: and our second round pick in twenty twenty eight to
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: trade for him. We don't give up any of our players.
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: We have a backfield of Bjon Robinson, Traveon Henderson, and
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: our quarterback who's stopping.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: Us Evan reaching to hang up as quick as possible
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: to running back.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: Bjhon's a tremendous so bad it's not necessarily the draft captains.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: He's also not I stand by, there's only one Derrick Henry.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: Like the way Bijon wins is different. A guy that's
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: six four, a guy of a guy that's six four
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: two point fifty that plays, should play, should play Harbaugh
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: every single snap. Like, don't get me wrong, Bjon's great
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: tyler Aljeer carries some of the load in that offense.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: And now Jeers, by the way, like a decent player,
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: but a guy being a And McCaffrey is a three
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: hundred touchier guy too, But a lot of those are
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: catches and they're different, Like Derek Henry's just gronk at
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: running back always.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: There's uh, you know, you know my take that there's
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: like a handful of running back step matter. Bjon definitely matters, Yeah,
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: McCaffrey matters. Derrick Henry matters. I would say that Jamior
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: Gibbs might be in that club.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: There's some games they do pretty well without them, you're
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: gonna put anybody else?
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: I'd yeah, not this year, but I hear you like
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: Saquon last year certainly well.
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: I thought he was gonna more different action than that.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: So let me ask you this, like I don't. I'm
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: just gonna say this real quickly, just to answer to
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: the call you can take Justin Jefferson and Jon Robinson off.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Anything that's not happening. Neither one of those guys is happening.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: I will say that evidence maybe Addison could happen.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: I thought he was gonna take that another direction because
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: there's been some talk, especially if they lose on Sunday,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: do the Ravens kind of hit the reset button blow
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: it up? I think there's been some reporting about Lamar
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Jackson's future. What's that going to look like?
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: There?
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Trading for Dereck Henry, trading for Derick Henry.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean maybe.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: I mean if it's a second round pick for Derrick Henry,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: I have a really tough time, uh.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: Coming up with what the value for Derrick Henry would be.
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: I literally just pulled up because he's old running back trades.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: He's obviously a first ballot Hall of Famer and still
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: playing at a very high level. But he's over thirty. Yeah,
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: you know so, I mean I I those are the
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: types of trades that I wonder if he doesn't get
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: traded for quite as much as we are expecting.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: So that's what I'm saying. So, for instance McCaffrey, Now
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: McCaffrey was much much younger. Yeah, second, there was a second, third, fourth,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: and fifth.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Yeah, so says probably still too.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: Let's say it's half of that for Derek Henry at
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: this point. Let's say it's a second of fourth for
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: Derrick Henry.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: I think that's a lot.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: I might do it.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: I'm not saying I wouldn't do it. I am saying
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: I don't think you need to.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: Let's say it's the third. I think it's going to
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: be a top one hundred pick. He's not going for
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: less than top one hundred.
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: Maybe a second on its own second on Would you
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: do that?
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: Maybe it would take a lot of the pressure off
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Drake May. Yeah, i'd probably he can still play. I
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: said to somebody jokingly watching those games.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: You know, it kills me to.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Say that if you could add Derrick Henry, Max Crosby,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: draft the linebacker, draft to guard, and everybody else stays put,
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: how would you feel about that offseason? He got to
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: ad depth here.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: Oh yeah, but I mean that's that's Max, the Max Crosby.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I'm usually the guy that sits here when everybody's throwing
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: out the all pro names, saying no, it's not realistic.
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: No they're not ready for it. No it's too soon,
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: No it's too much.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: This might be the off season where we.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: Entertain some of those, not all of them, not every
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: single one at once, but like I would call Max
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: Crosby realistic target for the Patriots the soft season. He's available,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: that's the kind of guy that should be on I
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: might even trade a first round pick for Max Crosby.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: I agree that. I that I think that those types
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: of guys, especially at edge rusher, wide receiver, positions of need.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: I don't know if running back is truly a position
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: of need. I mean, you have two good ones, but
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: ed rusher and like playmaker, pass catcher, whatever you want
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: to call it. On offense, I think is is definitely
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: in play I think right now, and I just.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: Think Henry thing because he's so good. He has the
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: relationship with Rape.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: No, I hear you, I just it, just I don't
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: that's a cherry on top type of piece. Whereas, like
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: I think ed rusher is the biggest need on the team.
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: They need, they need an impact.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: Realistically, they could add Derek Henry and an edge rusher.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: May not Max Crosby, but I could add Derek Henry
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: and an EDGECS.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: I don't know. I think we're getting a little pie
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: in this guy. All right, patrick'son PA. What's up? Patrick?
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: Hey, guys, quick question my questions about the Jets build
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: game that happening this week. Evan, Since you said you're
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: you know, affiliated with the mafia, have you heard what
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: the plan is for the Jets week? Because I do
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: have tickets to the divisional round game in Julette, and
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: I really sweat a lot less for the next few weeks.
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: If we get the Chargers in a wildcard round instead
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: of the Bills, that they intentionally goog to the Jets
- 1:20:19Speaker 5: and become the seventh. So I'll take it off the air.
- 1:20:22Speaker 5: Hope you guys and your families have a happy New year.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: Thanks Patrick, Thanks for the call. So I've heard a
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: couple of things about the Bills. One is that I
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: do know that they really kind of care about it
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: being the last game at high Mark Stadium. They're not
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: going to have a home playoff game most likely, so
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: this is probably going to be the last game they
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: play ever at high Mark Stadium. I think it was
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: like a fifty year run of that stadium sixties. I think, yeah,
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: So that that's like, what can I say something nice
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: about the Bills in a second? Let me finish my point,
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: not gonna let me that that stadium no offense at
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: all men dead stadium is kind of a.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: Nineteen that I was gonna say, nice, that's a great Wait,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: that's what football stadium.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: Should that places that places. I'm not saying that I
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: like the cookie cutter news stadiums all the time and either.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: But like that place is logistically, I think it should
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: be closer to that than the new ones.
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: So that that place is closing now, is that is
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: showing out and winning in front of your home fans
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: in the last game at high Mark Stadium worth risking
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: playing Josh Allen for four quarters against the Jets. No,
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: but do you need to play him four quarters against
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: the Jets to ensure that you win the game. We
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: just watched the Patriots pull Drake May in the third
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: quarter against the Jets a week ago. I would say
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: it's a weird sort of situation where the Jets might
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: be so bad that the Bills aren't really capable of
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: like fully tanking that game unless they truly like go
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: out there and like miss a field goal on purpose,
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: you know, like I'm saying, tank within reason.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Is there a chance they get emotional about they want
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: Josh Allen to take the final snap at high Mark
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: always put him back in the game.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: For a Neil down or something. Yeah, I think so.
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: I think that there's some there's some emotion there tied
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: to the fact that it's the last game in that
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: stadium and they want to go out with a win.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: I think I honestly, I respect that. I respect that.
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: I'm glad they're wearing the red helmets. You like one
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: of the guys who liked the Bloods of Arab Bill's uniforms.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: New ones are very big of you. Imp well complicates though,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: like he's hurt. He's not right, Yes, Alan, that's why
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: he doesn't about that.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: If you're a Bills fan, there's no way that you
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: can as the leader about being good.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: Josh Allen fan Club, do you want to answer for
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: him not diving on that fumble and missing the throw
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: on the two point play?
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: That's what I thought, Rhode Island.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: Hey, how's it going on? So? I was calling in
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: thinking about the off season coming up, partially about the
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: draft and partially about players that could potentially be on
- 1:22:54Speaker 4: their way out of town. I was going back to
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: I actually think there was a report by you, Evan
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: or you were talking about it last week about Barmore
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: having a lot of complaints about holding that the Patriots
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: weren't necessarily seeing as well. Is that accurate?
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: I mean, I think every player does that, Randy, But
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: I keep going.
- 1:23:21Speaker 4: I just think that he hasn't been quite as productive
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: as we would like this year. The key stat that
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: I look at is two point one percent miss tackles
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: is way off the board for like his normal amount.
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: Like normally he was a three four percent miss tackles guy.
- 1:23:39Speaker 4: This year, he's been really bad in that situation. He
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: hasn't really produced from a pass rushing standpoint in terms
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: of like finishing it off. He's created pressures. But I
- 1:23:51Speaker 4: just don't think he's produced like what you would expect
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: a twenty one million a year detackled to produce. And
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: then I think Milton Williams being down like Barmore, should
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: be anchoring that lot. They shouldn't have fallen apart like
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: it has. Most teams don't have two superstar defensive tackles,
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: you know, most a lot of teams one superstar and
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: then you build around that. And I just he seems
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: like a candidate to me that could be on his
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: way out of town. Rabling Company kind of tried to
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: rid themselves of a lot of old contracts last summer,
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: but obviously he wasn't a guy you could now you
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: have a fully healthy season out of him, playing his
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: second most snaps in his career, and I just think
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: that maybe you could get some value out of them.
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: And then to the draft. I had heard the earlier
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: caller talking about wide receivers, and you guys were talking
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: about wide receivers. You were talking about a lot of
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: the smaller, like five to eleven cycle wide receivers. I
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: been looking at this draft and looking at a couple
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: of the bigger guys myself. You guys have mentioned Denzel Boston,
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: and he's the good first round target, great ideal player
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: for this team to match with Drake may on deep throws.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: And he's a great run blocker. But I think a
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: date late day two, early day three target, maybe Malachi
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: Fields out of Notre Dame. Another big body, makes contested
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: catches and most importantly he run blocks. And with mac
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: hollins being down on injured reserve, it's like, we need
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: a guy that has that body type, so we're not
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: solely reliant on Mac maccollins being, you know, playing that roley.
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: What do you guys think about that? In one more team,
- 1:25:40Speaker 4: one more gut to throw at you for the drafts
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: car Dylan de enemu ra Abile built that Tennessee defense
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: around not just Jeffery Simmons on the line, but around
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: Kevin Byard of the safety position. And I think that
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: we've already got, you know, Milton Williams, go get your
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: Kevin Byard, Go get your back back end guy. You know,
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: he still upset the great leader, obsessed with personal growth,
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: team and growth, just all the innschansibles, but the on
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: field stuff. Day one starter from true as a true freshman, I.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: Purdue, all right, Rennie, I gotta let you go. Sorry,
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: thanks for the call, and I do appreciate all the
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: research and the information that you had. I'm not trying
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: to particularly, I don't like king him up on people.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: But the biggest thing I would say, you know, with
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: Barmore at that point, I guess maybe I just I
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: don't know, maybe I'm biased with Barmore. He's one of
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: the guys that I really like in that locker room.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: But I mean, I think he's been pretty productive. You know, Yeah, he.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: Doesn't have the stats, but if you go watch the tape,
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: like he's made an impact.
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: I just don't really feel like that position organically. I
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: don't unless you're like Aaron Donald or Chris Jones, Like
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: the sacks don't really come. I mean, I'm looking at
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: it here. He's seventh among defensive tackles and win Rady's
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: top ten total pressures. He was up there near the
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: top of the league when Bilton Williams was playing next
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: to him in total pressures, and now he's still in
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: the top tennis. You know, he's got four hands on
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: him all the time. He's getting doubled on pretty much
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: every play, and we talk a lot of the time
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: about like Tuesday players and things like that, that he
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: has become the Tuesday player of that front. So I'm
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: gonna defend him a little bit. I'm not saying that
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: it's a totally off base take that. You know, maybe
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: they could look to move some players like that. You
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: know that maybe they think are are not great fits
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: or whatever the case may be. But I'm gonna have
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: Barmore's back a little bit. I think he's been better
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: than what the caller was saying.
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: I think this defense is he said a lot of
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: teams don't have to two star defensive tackles, but I
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: think that's kind of what this defense is predicator around. Yeah,
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: you look at I think it was Vrabels last year
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: in Tennessee or was he gone? But you look at
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: what they've tried to build in a similar defensive system.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: It's not just.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: Jeffrey Simmons' Devandre Sweat, who's been a good player like I.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Do you need two guys like that? No, probably not.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: But if you have a guy like I wouldn't rush
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: one of them out there.
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: Defensive tackles or standouts or stars or whatever you want
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: to call them. But Barmore has been getting a lot
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: of double teams, and I don't think the other guys
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: are really forcing the offense's hand to stop doubling Barmore,
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: which is what you need.
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: Right It's not a coincidence the defense, Like let's say
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: it Ben Barber who went down instead of Milton Williams.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I still think they'd be having a lot of the
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: similar problems right now.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I agree. Okay, So the other point that
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: he made about the receivers, I think is kind of
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: a fair one, Like this is probably another area where
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: I'm kind of biased. I just don't love the big
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: body guys. This is not my type. It's not my
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: flavor of wide receiver. I like the separators. I like
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: the guys that bring speed to the table. But there's
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: no doubt that Drake may likes throwing to bigger receivers.
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: He clearly liked throwing to Matt Collins, especially over the
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: middle of the field. He likes throwing to the tight ends.
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: I would probably favor just adding a more explosive, dynamic
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: pass catching tight end over adding like a big body X.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: But I hear the point of you know, maybe doing
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: uh the other route instead. I just I like Booty.
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: I think he's you know, a good enough player in
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: that role that they have him in. Now, you know,
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: Matt Collins will probably stick around for one more season.
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: Uh so maybe you know eventually they kind of look
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: for that big outside guy. It's just not my type.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: I go back to if they want to get a
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: guy later in the draft as a project for that
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: spot and build it up from there, you know, we
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: can have another conversation. We certainly, Wow, why am I
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: blanking on his name? The guy from South Carolina that
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: I've been like obsessed with. Oh Harbor, Yeah, thank you, nick.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: I almost said to Clay Harbor and listen he say
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: he's going back to school. He's not on the big
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: board whatever. Like we can talk about a project eye
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: late on day three if we're talking about the guys
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: in the first two rounds, like, that's a guy that's
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: got to play. And so if you're bringing back mac
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: Hollins and you're bringing back Keisha on Booty, that guy
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: is just not going to play.
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: So it's kind of how it becomes really hard to jump. Okay,
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: and by the way they bring back everybody, then you
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: don't take a wide receiver high.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: So I know we have a couple more calls.
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: Carber is going back to school.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: Oh, there you go.
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: All right, so we'll have to wait. Know that you're
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: under Carver.
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: So I want to but I wanted to get some
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: of these other things before we take these last couple
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: of calls. Just playoff scenarios Dolphins, A little on the Dolphins,
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: which I do think is kind of a classic spoiler
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: frisky game. Not the Jets. The Jets. I laughed fred
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: Off off the show last week when he tried to
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: hype up the Jets a little bit. I was like,
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: that's not happening. Jet. The Jets have no chance in
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: this game. I do think I do give the Dolphins
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: a chance if the Dolphins want to play, Like if
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: they come to play and they won't take the game seriously,
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: I do give them a puncher's chance. But I want
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: to do this first, and then we'll do a little
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: bit on the Dolphins. There are five different playoff scenarios, Alex.
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: For the Patriots, I'll just read them off and then
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: I want you to rank them in order of All right,
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: we're doing more ranking. So do you want to who
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: you want to face to, who you don't want to
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: face right, So one would be the best possible scenario.
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: Five would be the worst possible scenario. So here are
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: the five. And granted there's a lot of different you know,
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: odds of these happening, you know, are higher and lower
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: in different places. Obviously the first round by you could
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: play the Bills, you could play the Jaguars, you could
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: play the Chargers, or you could play the Texans.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: Now the jack is pretty easy.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: The Jaguars can lose the division if they lose and
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: the Texans win this week, so that is still in
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: play in the in the AFC South, the most likely,
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: just based off the percentages which take it for weight,
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: will is the Chargers, you know, but ranked those.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: Five buys obviously number one, yep, you want to buy
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: like not having going to play a game is the
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: best possible outcome. As much as we all love watching
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Patriots football, when you get to this time of year
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: of the playoffs, even if you think there's an easy
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: opponent out there, your risk injuries or this or that
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: or whatever, no buys Number one by a wide margin.
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: Number two is Chargers, yep. And they're bending up Herbert
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: and the cold. I know he was good in the
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: game here last year that was the late Patriots. People are, yeah,
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: it doesn't count. I don't love him in the cold
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: coming in that Jets game. They are good on the
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: line of scrimmage, and so you know with the offensive line, Well,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: all right, they're good, they're they're correct.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: Sorry, but.
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: They're not an easy opponent. I do think people are
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: under selling them a little bit.
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: But I do put them in two. I mean, whenever
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: you go up against the Harbaugh and Herbert in the playoffs,
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: that's not an easy uh.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: Next is the Jaguars. I think they're similar to the Chargers.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: The only reason I put them ahead is they're coming
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: in hot. The Chargers aren't.
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: I guess if the Chargers backups beat the Broncos maybe
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: that changes that. But like the Jaguars are playing and
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: the Patriots to buy that's right, assuming the Patriots win.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: The Jaguars are playing really good football right now. So
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: I just I give them the edge because they're a
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: little bit more on a heater.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: My Jaguars thing is the reason why I I'd feel
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: comfortable with the Jaguars because I'm with you on this
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: list so far. I Liam Cohen coaching his first ever
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: playoff game. He's had a great season. He's definitely a
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: candidate for Coach of the Year. But I'm just taking
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: Rabel and McDaniels with their you know, playoff experience, and
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: we you know, Trevor Lawrence in the playoffs, I think
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: has been a little bit dice. He had that one
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: thirty point comeback, he had the one comeback, but he
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: also put himself down thirty point true.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: So you know, seeing this Patriots team.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, but I'm with you. So if I Chargers, if.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: I had a tier them by his Tier one ideal
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: Tier two's, yeah, I feel good as good as you
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: can feel about it. Chargers and Jaguars. Then there's the
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: Texans is four, which is the tier Like, I don't
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: want to see them because it's.
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: A matchup nightmare.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not saying the Patriots can't beat them, but
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: that front man, the defense, there's more to c J.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: Stroud than what he's done in the regular season. Don't
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: sleep on CJ. Stroud.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: I don't sleep on CJ. Stroud. I do sleep on
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: that offense as a whole. And I I don't think
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: it's been a great year for a guy that I
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: like the pieces Nick Kele could click.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: Nick Cayley's might be the weaker link of that offense,
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: but they got talent. Number five is the Bills, yep,
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: which I feel like I shouldn't be scared of them,
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: but I am. I Josh Allen's banged up. You want
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: to talk about coaching in the playoffs? Sean McDermott just
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: pukes all over himself every year, That's true. Every year
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: he will do something stupid in that game. But and
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: and Josh Allen's hurt, So, like, where's josh Allen's foot at?
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: Is part of this? If Josh Allen's trying to play
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: on a broken foot, I doubt that's what it is.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: But like, right, yeah, okay, I'd probably rather play the
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: Bills in Texans. But there's something about playing a team
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: a third time that just bugs me. I don't want
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: to deal with it.
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: Uh, that's it for me, That's exactly. I have the
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: exact same list. I think the biggest thing with the
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: Bills is not necessarily did I fear that the Patriots,
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: you know, we get blown off the field or anything
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the thing that you just mentioned. It's just
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: weird when you play a team I love weird football.
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: It's I don't like my team having a weird thing
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: in the playoffs.
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: It's just weird.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: It's a weird thing, like give me Bears packs. In
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: the NFC, I'll watch the hell out of that.
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: Right And when they've also played two games that were
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: decided within one score, that are both kind of toss
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: up games in the regular season, it's just it's bound
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: to be one of those kind of weird third time
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: through division things I just want no part of. I'm
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: with you on the Chargers. I think that this year,
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: unfortunately for the Patriots, There's been years, you know, really
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: recent years where the two to seven matchup is a
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: cupcake for the two seed. It's like, yeah, an eight
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: and nine or nine and eight I should say Steelers team,
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: or you know, a Colts team that doesn't have its
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: quarterback or you know whatever. You know, there's other permutations
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: of that happening, Sam, in the NFC, this isn't one
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: of those years. This is this is a deep playoff
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: field this year. In the AFC.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: I do want to add one thing to all of this.
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: There is a scenario that I've kind of been looking
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: at which goes beyond the first round. I'm trying to
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: remember exactly what it was.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: I think this is it, so.
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: No one thing has to flip here there it is okay,
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: so you can get to a spot. I think the
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: ideal if I were to give you the ideal for
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: the Patriots, outside of getting the buy seating two to
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: seven Patriots, Jaguar, Steelers, Bills, Texans, Chargers, for that to happen,
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: it's every favorite winning but the Texans. And the reason
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: that's important is if the Patriots take their business against
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: the Chargers. Yes, the Jags can beat the Texans, I think,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: and the Bills are gonna beat the Steelers obviously. Yeah,
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: you now get there's actually another version of this anyway,
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: there's some path I was trying to figure it out
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: where the Texans, Bills, and Broncos all have to play
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: each other before they get to the Patriots, and the
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Patriots basically, oh, Jags Chargers to the AFC Championship.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: So I think that that's the path of that. I
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: was also going to bring up it's Chargers Jaguars, right,
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: because I think the big thing is is that everybody
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: has to remember because it's been a little bit since
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: we've had this these types of conversations, it recedes in
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: the NFL. So the lowest remaining seed is going to
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: go to Denver. So if the Patriots take care of
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: business against the let's say call it the Chargers just
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: for this argument or this conversation, and either the five
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: or the six win their matchup, Denver is gonna draw
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: either Houston or Buffalo in the divisional round, which means
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: the Patriots would then get the Jaguars in that scenario, right,
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: And so if that happens, and you could go Jaguars, Chargers, Jaguars,
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: and then potentially you could be like hosting the Bills
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: in the AFC Championship game, you might not even need
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: to go on the road, because you know how I
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: feel about Denver. I'm not trying to make this Denver thing,
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: but Broncos Bills or Broncos Texans is not a guarantee
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: that Denver wins that game. So, and that's the case,
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: the Patriots all of a sudden could be in a
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: position where they're hosting the AFC Championship game, which is
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: easily three straight home games is easily.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: So trying to remember exactly what the permutation of it.
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: Was, but this is also just sorry not to cut
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: you off, but this is all also why I think
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: it's it's kind of important to play for the number
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: two seed because if you win the number two seed,
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: the only place you can play on the road is Denver.
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: And if Denver gets tripped up by one of those
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: wildcard teams that we're talking about the Texans are the Bills. Well,
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: now you don't have to go on the road at all.
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: And I know the Patriots are eight and zero on
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: the road and their road Warriors and all that stuff.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: It's the playoffs it's different, and the regular season it
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: actually bears out. You know, if you look at the
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: last like three to five years, the regular season win
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: percentage for home road is pretty even. Yeah, but it's not.
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: In the playoffs. It goes back to the home team heavily.
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: And I think here's what it was. I think it
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: was Patriots, two Jags, three Ravens, four Texans, five, Bill six,
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: Chargers seven, because the Bills should beat the Jags in Jacksonville, right,
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: the Ravens can knock off the I thought there was
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: some way where you got Bills.
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: No, you can't.
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: If the Bills and Texans both went in the first round.
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: One of them would have to play the Patriots. So
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: you need the Jacks to be playing one of those teams.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: You want the Jaguars to hold serve against their team,
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: whether it's the Texans or the Bills. You rot the Texans,
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: are the Bills to go to Denver, and you want
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: the Jaguars to come here. It's that. It's really that sense,
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: right yeah, all right, let's uh the point. There's a
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: way you don't get.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: We're giving you one of those teams just in the chance.
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: Everybody trying to follow. I'm working on the playoff machine
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: right now. I'm working on I'm trying to figure it out,
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: all right.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: But that's our ranking because everybody, all the emails are
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: who would you play? Who would you play? So buy
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: by the way, Chargers, Jaguars, Texans, Bills, that's our that's
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: our from least scary to most scary.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: The the NFC playoff picture rules.
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: I haven't even looked at it. I'm not gonna lie
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: so I I know what it is, but it's not
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: You could have Packers, Bears, y awesome, Eagles, Niners always
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: a fun game, and then even the four or five
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: could be Bucks Rams and I feel like those teams
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: have met in the playoffs kind of regularly recently, so
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: he gets some bad blood there. That's a fun that's
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: a fun field.
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: So can we talk a little bit about the Dolphins
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: if you want, Yeah, let's do ten minutes on the
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: Dolphins to wrap this thing up. I am laying down
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: my sword. I am not gonna argue about Mike McDaniel,
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: the head coach with you any longer you won this one,
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: you were right. That's right, Okay, you've won this one.
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: I don't know if they're gonna move on from Mike McDaniel.
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: He's gonna go at worst seven and ten, at best
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: eight and nine. If they beat the Patriots on Sunday,
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: it might be a situation where he gets like this
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: to start next year, and if they start, they're one
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: and sick to start. I think this year, if they
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: start like that again, then he gets fired midseason. I
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: don't know what they're gonna do. The one thing I
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: do know about Mike McDaniel, though, and I think we
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: are in agreement on this piece of it. Mike McDaniel
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: knows how to scheme an offense, he's a very good
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. And I have watched both games that they
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: played with quinn Eewers, I've been a little impressed.
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: The reasons why quinn Ewers has not been terrible, especially
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: in the first half of games. He kind of falls
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: apart a little bit in the second half is because
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: they are just driving efficiency and spamming play action. Like
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: they are calling runs in play actions at a league
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: high rate since quinn Ewers went in there, it's a
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: twenty percent play action rate to lead the league. In
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: the last two weeks is over seventy percent run action
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: run or play action pass to lead the league. So
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: they are just running the ball at eight chan and
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: play action pass that That is what they are doing
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: over and over and over again. But to yours' credit,
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: to Mike mc daniel's credit, it's worked for the most part.
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: Now the second half is it falls apart. So this
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: is a big opening script versus out of the script split.
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: Right when they get those first twenty plays or so,
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: they're absolutely humming. They're averaging seven almost eight yards of
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: play in the first half over the last two weeks
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: against the Bengals and the Bucks. It falls apart for
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: them in the second half. So I think the biggest
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: thing about this game that worries me a tad is
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: that this is a Dolphins team that can run the
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: football and run it well. They are top ten in
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: the league in EPA. Ighthn leads the league in explosive runs.
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: He has forty runs over ten plus yards. This Yeri's
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: having the fantastic season. So they can run the ball.
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: They can run it out of heavy personnel. They're gonna
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: put the full back and gold he's gonna play, They're
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: gonna put the tight ends out there. They're gonna run
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: it heavy, and then they're gonna run play action off
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: the run heavy looks and they start fast and what
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: has the one thing that the Patriots defense has had
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: trouble with not started fast, not starting fast. So I
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: don't think that this is a game that is going
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: to totally get away from the Patriot it's by any means,
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: But it wouldn't shock me if it's a little dicey early,
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: because I think the Dolphins have played pretty well, especially
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: over the last like eight or nine games. Defensively, they're
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: thirteenth in DVA during this little resurgence. If you want
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: to call it that. They've been six and three over
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: their last nine games. And I am not a you
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: ers guy, you know that. I don't think you were
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: too high on him either. He looks pretty poised to me,
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: like he doesn't look too big for him. He can't
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: throw the ball down the field. He's got a little
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: bit of that like Mac Jones thing in him right
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: where it's like when he's in rhythm to the first
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: and second level. He's accurate, he's decisive, he's poised. If
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: you ask him to push the ball down the field
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: into tighter windows, he has problems. So I do think
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: there's some things matchup wise that I'm looking forward to
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: watching in this game. With one big caveat ye, does
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: Miami care and does Miami show up? And does Miami
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: want to play in twenty five degree Foxborough weather on
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: Sunday and not down in South Beach like they did
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: last week when they upset Tampa Bay, Like do they
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: give a craps.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: Supposed to be thirty degrees a little onto thirty degrees
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: a kickoff?
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: So if they are already one, two three Cancun, then
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: this game might look a little bit different than what
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: I think it could if the Dolphins care. But the Dolphins,
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: if they care, if they play this string out and
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. I like this matchup from
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: a standpoint of Unlike the Jets, who are just kind
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: of in a bad way, the Dolphins have some things
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: they could do that could hurt the Patriots, and it
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: might be good to see the Patriots try to combat
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: those things. Whether it's like the Sky's coverage on defense
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: with Cover two, whether it's the run game offensively of
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: Miami attacking linebackers in coverage, right, like these types of
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: things that we have some concerns with with the Patriots.
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: I think the Dolphins can pull some of those levers.
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: I think this is like kind of a game in
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: my opinion. Now it's not Bills in Baltimore, right, Like,
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: it's not that, But I think this is like a
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: sneaky kind of could be an interesting game from that standpoint, Like,
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: I feel like I'm gonna have more to chew on
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: from this one than I did the Jets.
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: Yeah, like you said earlier, a little more of a
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: tune up game, yeah than maybe the Jets are and
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: you know they've had trouble with the speed.
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: Obviously good special teams.
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: Teams still have to balance that too, But is it
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: are the Dolphins showing up to play spoiler like they
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: did in twenty nineteen or is kankun on three?
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: Yeah? So they do have speed. The explosive players are
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: still definitely there, even without Tyreek Hill. You know Wattle
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: ah Chan Malik Washington is a fast guy. Greg Doltic
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: to the tight end has kind of emerged. You have
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: you watched yours at all yet, because I he's kind
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: of got a little something something going on in the
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: last couple of weeks. Who is that quin yours? Yeah?
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: I mean, I so, I have liked him and then
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: he kind of had that rough year at Texas. I
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: think he's maybe banged up, which didn't help. But I
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: mean I think he's, like, I think he's a serviceable
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: NFL backups, starter kind of quarterbacks. So to see him
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: having this kind of success is not surprising. But how
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: sustained is it? Usually with these guys, the wheels kind
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: of fall off the wagon. You just sort of hope
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: that's this week.
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: Well, it certainly has fallen off the wagon for them
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: in second half. The second half against Cincinnati was like
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: fumble interception fumble, turnover on downs and the Bengals just
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: went touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown. Yeah, and all of a
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: sudden they were up by twenty points. So it's falling
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: apart from him in the second halves of these games.
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: And they're driving up that Like I said earlier, they're
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: driving up that efficiency with play action, which is always
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: like it's kind of like a cheat code, you know,
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: and you have good play action passing. It's easy to
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: play quarterback like that when you have the run game going,
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: you have the play actions going. It's it's not a
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: lot of heavy lifting on the quarterback. But I thought
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: that he's made some good decisions too, just you know,
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: seeing the field pretty well. I don't know about the
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: physical tools, you know, that's going to be the question
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: with him. He's a little bit undersized. I don't know
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: if he has a big enough arm to push the
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: ball down the field, by the way you have to
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: do at this level. But I can see what they
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: see in him because he's got that.
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: Like kind of discount brock party thing going on. Yeah, right,
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: I think you compared him to Bo Nicks at one point.
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: Ur you know, I don't threak drafts like discount. Brock
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: Party is not too disrespectful, right, Like, I feel like
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: that's a that's a fair.
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: Comp Rock Party is usually the one that gets discount
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: put in front of his name. So it depends and
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: people feel very different ways on Rock Party.
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: I don't think that that Yours creates as well out
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: of structure as brock Party. Rock Party is kind of
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: a little bit frisky with that. You know, he can
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: run around a little bit and extend plays. I don't
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: think yours has that in him, but the I do
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: think the the element of it though, is you know
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: that offense when you run and you press the buttons
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: that you need to press and all that kind of
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: stuff like that, that offense can click just based off
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: the scheme. It's a good scheme, it's a good system.
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: Uh So you have that quarterback that can just kind
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: of push buttons, whether it's pretty or Jimmy gar Apollo
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: or maybe that's when yours, Like I could see why
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: McDaniel would like him, Yeah, because that's all he's going
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: to do. That neutral quarterback just make decisions that make
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: the right decision, Like it's buttons on the on the
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: PlayStation controller and when you.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: Need to get a little frisky. You can get a
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: little frisky who run the ball around a little bit?
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: Yep, all right, we can take these last two calls,
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: but we got to be quick. Shawn is in Vancouver.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: What's up, Sean?
- 1:48:23Speaker 10: Happy New the year you guys?
- 1:48:25Speaker 4: Do you have a great one today?
- 1:48:27Speaker 10: You know, I want to give you both props. You know,
- 1:48:31Speaker 10: back in twenty twenty four, you had really great analysis
- 1:48:36Speaker 10: of which quarterback the Patriots should take, whether it be
- 1:48:40Speaker 10: Daniels or You're welcome. And at the time, you know,
- 1:48:44Speaker 10: I was probably even leading more than Daniels before I
- 1:48:48Speaker 10: heard it. But what you said made so much sense
- 1:48:50Speaker 10: in terms of like the likelihood that Daniels would his
- 1:48:54Speaker 10: frame was not quite what would work in terms of
- 1:48:58Speaker 10: the NFL for injury. He's likely to get injured. It
- 1:49:01Speaker 10: be scrambling around and taking hits. So you know, I
- 1:49:05Speaker 10: think it's it's worked out even better for the Patriots. Yeah,
- 1:49:08Speaker 10: I love you know, I love the Drake. So that's uh,
- 1:49:12Speaker 10: that's all I got to say. And and uh go pots.
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: Thanks n Yeah, we talked about that a little bit yesterday.
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: I'm PU and I brought back my like criteria for
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: the number three overall pick and what I was looking for?
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: Uh Tim, wrap us up? Tim, what's up?
- 1:49:30Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:49:30Speaker 11: Can you hear me? Okay?
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: Yes?
- 1:49:33Speaker 11: Uh so, first time calling, a long time listening. I
- 1:49:36Speaker 11: remember in PU at the beginning of the season, there
- 1:49:39Speaker 11: was a conversation about thinking up if you could take
- 1:49:43Speaker 11: a quarter quarterback over Greg May?
- 1:49:44Speaker 3: Who was his take?
- 1:49:45Speaker 11: And there was about four or five quarterbacks that was said.
- 1:49:49Speaker 11: I was gonna see what you can all agree. Drakes
- 1:49:51Speaker 11: was playing out of his mind. Is there five or
- 1:49:54Speaker 11: four quarterbacks that you can name that you still take over?
- 1:49:57Speaker 11: Drag May?
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: Drake, thanks for the call to him. I think I
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: think as of right now, I've always put like the
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: elite tier, the s tier of Mahomes, Burrow, Lamar and
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: Josh Allen. I think it is a gap, and I
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: think that Drake May is knocking on the club door
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: of that group. But until he wins in the playoffs,
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: I think it's hard to hit him out at it.
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: He's I mean, you know, if we want to say
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: starting a franchise, I might take him over some of
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: those guys because he's younger, right, there's more time ahead.
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: But like you got to win a game today again,
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: He's still that that. That's the next tier is winning
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: that winning more than one playoff game, not just one,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: winning more than one playoff game.
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely, all right, we got to wrap it up.
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: Patriots Unfiltered will be up in ten minutes here here
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: from Mike Rabol around one ten one fifteen today as well.
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: I'm sure we'll carry that live on PU so you
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: can see that there and we'll be back next week.
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: Can you believe it, Barth? We're going to talk about
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: a playoff game?
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: How about that?
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: First time? First? That's true. Last time we talked about
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: a play off game it was in our former podcast,
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: So this is pretty cool. We'll talk about a Patriots
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: playoff game or maybe they're going to be on the
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: buye who knows, we'll be talking to play Yeah, we'll
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: do that next Wednesday, so we'll see you guys. Then. Hey,
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: this is Alex. Thanks for tuning into the show. If
